U.S. Nears Record Poultry Deaths From Bird Flu; Virus Type Complicates Fight – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-nears-record-poultry-deaths-from-bird-flu-virus-type-complicates-fight-reuters/ CHICAGO, Oct 18 (Reuters) – A near-record number of U.S. chickens and turkeys have died in this year’s outbreak of avian flu, as a different form of the virus than farmers battled before has infected more wild birds that then transmit the disease, officials said. More than 47 million birds have died due to infections and cullings. This has spurred export bans, lowered egg and turkey production, and contributed to record prices of the staples ahead of the U.S. holiday season. The outbreak exacerbates economic pain for consumers grappling with soaring inflation. In 2015, 50.5 million birds died in the deadliest U.S. outbreak, the nation’s worst animal-health event to date. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Farmers are fighting a subtype of the H5N1 strain of the virus that survived over the summer, when rising temperatures typically reduce avian flu, said Rosemary Sifford, chief veterinary officer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The same subtype, known as the goose/Guangdong lineage, is spreading in Europe, she said in an interview. Europe is already suffering its worst avian flu crisis, with nearly 50 million poultry culled. Officials are finding the subtype in a broader range of wild birds, such as ducks, than in the past and it seems to live in the birds longer, Sifford said. An elevated threat for infections may persist until summer 2023 as they migrate, she said. The United States is monitoring wild birds for avian flu in four migration paths known as flyways, up from two previously, and plans to do the same next year. “This virus could be present in wild birds for the foreseeable future,” Sifford said. “This one is certainly different.” The outbreak has infected flocks in 42 states since February, twice as many as in 2015, USDA records show. Infections slowed over the summer this year but did not stop as they did in 2015. The tenacity of the virus surprised some producers, who have boosted cleaning and security in barns since the 2015 outbreak. “Unfortunately what we’ve done probably hasn’t been enough to protect us from this high load of virus in the wild bird population,” Sifford said. RECORD TURKEY PRICES Minnesota, the nation’s top turkey-producing state, suffered infections in two commercial flocks in late August after going three months without cases, USDA data show. The state then saw more cases in September. “Seeing a spike in August was not something that was expected,” said Ashley Kohls, executive director of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association. After infections, it takes about six months to decontaminate farms and resume turkey production, Kohls said. Minnesota-based Hormel Foods Corp (HRL.N), owner of the Jennie-O Turkey Store brand, said it expects avian flu to reduce its turkey production at least through March 2023. “We’ve worked really hard but clearly this is still an issue,” Hormel CEO James Snee said on a conference call last month. Retail prices for fresh boneless, skinless turkey breast reached a record $6.70 per pound last month, up 112% from a year earlier and 14% above the previous record from 2015, the American Farm Bureau said. Turkey meat production this year is set to drop 6% from 2021 to 5.2 billion pounds, according to the USDA. U.S. farmers, who face high costs for feed and labor, were already cutting production before the outbreak due to declining profits. Inventories of turkey breasts in cold storage facilities reached a record low this year, USDA data show. Indiana turkey farmer Greg Gunthorp said grocers, online retailers and other buyers have called searching for whole turkeys and breasts. Antibiotic-free turkey breasts are selling for $7-$9 per pound wholesale, compared to about $3 before the COVID-19 pandemic, he said. “The turkey market right now is the craziest I’ve ever seen it,” Gunthorp said. Infections in flocks have triggered export restrictions on U.S. poultry, further hurting producers. China, a major buyer, has blocked poultry from entire states with confirmed cases and is taking longer than it should to lift the bans, the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council said. China this month suspended poultry imports from Arkansas, the third-biggest producer of chickens raised for meat, after the state reported its first infection of the year, USDA records show. The state’s agriculture secretary, Wes Ward, said he had hoped Arkansas could avoid the disease. “The virus has changed,” Ward said. “Hopefully it’s one of those where the virus will burn itself out after a year or so and maybe things will calm down again.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Tom Polansek in Chicago; Editing by Caroline Stauffer and David Gregorio Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Mouseplanet Walt Disney World Resort Update For October 18-24 2022 By Alan S. Dalinka MousePlanet
Mouseplanet Walt Disney World Resort Update For October 18-24 2022 By Alan S. Dalinka MousePlanet
Mouseplanet – Walt Disney World Resort Update For October 18-24, 2022 By Alan S. Dalinka – MousePlanet https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/mouseplanet-walt-disney-world-resort-update-for-october-18-24-2022-by-alan-s-dalinka-mouseplanet/ Walt Disney World Resort Update for October 18-24, 2022 You can view a larger version of the photos included in the Update by clicking on the photo. Each photo will open in a separate tab without a caption.  Writer’s Note, News & Views Following last week’s change to Genie+ pricing (it’s now set dynamically by date rather than a fixed amount), it has been another quiet week for news around Walt Disney World Resort. Disney did share the less-than-specific news that the revised version of Fantasmic! will open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in November (following the announcement earlier this year that the show would return before the end of 2022). The good news for those cast members (and us locals) that approach the Resort from the northeast via Reams Road this week is that the flooding between Bay Court and Magic Kingdom cast parking subsided sufficiently for Orange County to finally reopen the road this week for the first time since September 28 and the approach of Hurricane Ian. On the whole now, the Resort has fully returned to pre-Hurricane Ian operations. Of course, the tropical storm season continues through the end of November and storms do not know how to read calendars, so it remains important to keep tuned in for weather events as we head into Florida’s typically dry winter season. Views Around the World With the summer heat and humidity further fading now that fall is underway, I again made it over to three of the parks this past weekend and even took the long walk from Magic Kingdom to main parking via Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort (and the new detour around the DVC construction that is underway). All of the parks were busy during my visits, so whatever lull in attendance that fall brought in the past was not evident when I was there. Magic Kingdom and Vicinity With Halloween about two weeks away, I noticed that the entrance to Magic Kingdom has already begun a slight transformation to Christmas: the Mickey head floral bed seems to consist of the winter holidays’ traditional red poinsettias. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. With the TRON Lightcycle Run attraction expected to open in the Spring, pavement installation is now evident in this new expansion of Tomorrowland beyond the Speedway. Railroad tracks have been reinstalled around Tomorrowland and through a new tunnel under the TRON Lightcycle Run canopy. Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. is closed for refurbishment and its exterior look continues to evolve. This “exit through the gift shop” for Space Mountain likely will also serve as a merchandise location for TRON Lightcycle Run when it opens. The Walt Disney World Railroad remains closed because of the on-going construction of TRON Lightcycle Run. Next to the Fantasyland station, the railroad track re-installation remains incomplete. Photos by Alan S. Dalinka. At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, the culinary team has created a Halloween display that pays tribute to The Haunted Mansion. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. The walkway from Disney’s Grand Floridian to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort now detours away from Seven Seas Lagoon due to the construction of the new Disney Vacation Club tower on the former site of the Spirit of Aloha luau dinner theater. Detour signs lead guests walking between the two resorts through Disney’s Wedding Pavilion’s parking lot. To walk between Disney’s Grand Floridian and Polynesian Resorts, guest must now cross Floridian Way twice. A new crosswalk has been painted across Floridian Way at the exit to the Wedding Pavilion’s parking lot. Guests walking between the two resorts now share the path with the golf cart path along the Floridian Way side of the Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course. The Magnolia Golf Course itself is undergoing a major reimagination right now as well. Guests cross Floridian Way near Disney’s Polynesian Resort where the golf cart path crosses the road. The detour between the resorts ends where the existing Polynesian longhouses stand. Photos by Alan S. Dalinka. Further south along Floridian Way where it approaches the Speedway Auto Center and World Drive, construction has finally resumed on the flyover ramps that began long-before the pandemic and its temporary shutdown of the resort. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. The flyover on the west side of Magic Kingdom’s main parking lot will change the flow of traffic around the parking lot. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. EPCOT EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival continues for another month, through November 19. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. The Disney Vacation Club Member lounge (on the upper level of Imagination! pavilion), has some new graphics on the walls surrounding the space. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. The graphics on the DVC Member Lounge now also include a “permanent” photo spot. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. Back downstairs in the Imagination! pavilion, I noticed Bing Bong appearing on the walls from time to time for the first time. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka. Steel framing for the future CommuniCore Hall (festival center) is visible from all over the west side of the park. From the monorail around the former Future World section of the park, guests can see quite a bit of ongoing construction now. The area where the Fountain of Nations formerly stood remains an active construction area. The future CommuniCore Hall (festival center) construction can be seen from the monorail as it heads to the station. The future Journey of Water inspired by Moana walk-through attraction continues to take shape ahead of its expected debut sometime next year. Some of the rock work for Journey of Water already shows some finer details. Photos by Alan S. Dalinka. Disney’s Hollywood Studios Since our last Update, Disney got slightly more specific as to when the updated version of Fantasmic! will open: November. Socially distanced Donald was again appearing near the park’s entrance this weekend. Although about a third of the Cairo set was not on stage during a performance of Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular on Sunday (along with about a third of the usual show), Indy and Marion stunt doubles still took a major leap off one of the towers. Exterior construction at the Roundup Rodeo BBQ table service restaurant continues. I hope that the “backyard” theme of Toy Story Land is restored to this area and the administration building beyond the restaurant is once again hidden when construction is complete. Disney has not shared an opening date for this restaurant that was originally announced for a 2020 debut. When browsing the stores of the park, it is never surprising that even some of the newest characters of Disney subsidiaries are available to help celebrate Halloween. Photos by Alan S. Dalinka. This & That & Reminders… …An okapi calf was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, the twelfth okapi born at Walt Disney World Resort and the fifth at the lodge. Named Beni, the baby okapi is the first calf to be born at Walt Disney World Resort since 2018, and at a little over three feet tall from hoof to shoulder, he weighs just under 100 pounds. He could eventually grow to between five and six feet tall and up to 650 pounds! BOO! Isn’t this the cutest “ghost of the forest” you’ve ever seen? Meet Beni, an okapi calf born this summer at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. He’s currently backstage where he’s perfecting his wobbly walk & following in mom Olivia’s “hoof”steps: https://t.co/wrazEjYyW9 pic.twitter.com/KenADpz0AE — Disney Parks (@DisneyParks) October 15, 2022 …Disney Parks Blog saluted Miguel Arribas this week as part of honoring of all the talented Hispanic cast members and beyond. Arribas has devoted more than 50 years of his life to creating Disney-themed collectibles as a glass artist at Arribas Brothers stores across Walt Disney World Resort since opening year. Originally from Montevideo, Uruguay, Arribas is one of the longest-serving team members at the Walt Disney World Arribas Brothers locations. Walt Disney World Resort, and especially Disney Springs, is now celebrating Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month. …Looking ahead to Thanksgiving, Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant at Disney Springs will be serving up its special Thanksgiving dinner all day—11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Guests who prefer to order lunch or dinner from the restaurant’s all-day menu are also welcome to do so; Raglan’s plant-based Shepherd’s Pie (This Shepherd Went Vegan) is a popular vegan option too. Live Irish music and dance begins at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and continues through pub close. Considering Thanksgiving dining at Raglan Road? Reservations recommended: RaglanRoad.com. …REMINDER: Give Kids The World’S popular “Night of a Million Lights,” will be back for its third year—but at the Island H2O Water Park in Kissimmee, Florida, rather than at the not-for-profit Village’s resort as it had been since its debut. From November 11, 2022, through January 1, 2023, the Island H2O Water Park, 3230 Inspiration Drive, Kissimmee, FL 34747, will be “transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland featuring millions of lights, luminous displays, festive family activities and live entertainment for a one-of-a-kind, fully immersive holiday experience.” Nightly entertainment will include performances by Dueling Pianos Jingle and Jangle and the strolling a cappella group Santa’s Dancing Reindeer, with DJ Jack Frost Ice Block Party leading an interactive holiday hits dance party. Tickets are on sale now at gktw.org/lights/. Night of a Million Lights was hosted at Give Kids the World Village in late 2020 and 2021. Commercial traction continues to increase in Europe, USA and APAC regions. “Looking ahead to the rest of the current financial year, we aim to continue delivering strong revenue growth and we expect to sign new contracts across all business units. ‘Bad Situation’: Soaring U.S. Dollar Spreads Pain Worldwide – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/bad-situation-soaring-u-s-dollar-spreads-pain-worldwide-the-washington-post/ The cost of living in Cairo has soared so much that security guard Mustafa Gamal had to send his wife and year-old daughter to live with his parents in a village 70 miles south of the Egyptian capital to save money. Gamal, 28, stayed behind, working two jobs, sharing an apartment with other young people and eliminating meat from his diet. “The prices of everything have been doubled,” he said. “There was no alternative.’’ Around the world, people are sharing Gamal’s pain and frustration. An auto parts dealer in Nairobi, a seller of baby clothes in Istanbul and a wine importer in Manchester, England have the same complaint: A surging U.S. dollar makes their local currencies weaker, contributing to skyrocketing prices for everyday goods and services. This is compounding financial distress at a time when families are already facing food and energy crunches tied to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “A strong dollar makes a bad situation worse in the rest of the world,’’ says Eswar Prasad, a professor of trade policy at Cornell University. Many economists worry that the sharp rise of the dollar is increasing the likelihood of a global recession sometime next year. The dollar is up 18% this year and last month hit a 20-year high, according to the benchmark ICE U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the dollar against a basket of key currencies. The reasons for the dollar’s rise are no mystery. To combat soaring U.S. inflation, the Federal Reserve has raised its benchmark short-term interest rate five times this year, and is signaling more hikes are likely. That has led to higher rates on a wide range of U.S. government and corporate bonds, luring investors and driving up the U.S. currency. Most other currencies are much weaker by comparison, especially in poor countries. The Indian rupee has dropped nearly 10% this year against the dollar, the Egyptian pound 20%, the Turkish lira an astounding 28%. Celal Kaleli, 60, sells infant clothing and diaper bags in Istanbul. Because he needs more lira to buy imported zippers and liners priced in dollars, he has to raise prices for the Turkish customers who struggle to pay him in the much-diminished local currency. “We’re waiting for the new year,” he said. “We’ll look into our finances, and we’ll downsize accordingly. There’s nothing else we can do.’’ Rich countries aren’t immune. In Europe, which was already teetering toward recession amid soaring energy prices, one euro is worth less than a $1 for the first time in 20 years, and the British pound has plunged 18% from a year ago. The pound recently flirted with dollar parity after Britain’s new prime minister, Liz Truss, announced huge tax cuts that roiled financial markets and led to the ouster of her Treasury secretary. Ordinarily, countries could get some benefit from falling currencies because it makes their products cheaper and more competitive overseas. But at the moment, any gain from higher exports is muted because economic growth is sputtering almost everywhere. A rising dollar is causing pain overseas in a number of ways: — It makes other countries’ imports more expensive, adding to existing inflationary pressures. — It squeezes companies, consumers and governments that borrowed in dollars. That’s because more local currency is needed to convert into dollars when making loan payments. — It forces central banks in other countries to raise interest rates to try and prop up their currencies and keep money from fleeing their borders. But those higher rates also weaken economic growth and drive up unemployment. Put simply: “The dollar’s appreciation is bad news for the global economy,’’ says Capital Economics’ Ariane Curtis. “It is another reason why we expect the global economy to fall into recession next year.’’ In a gritty neighborhood of Nairobi known for fixing cars and selling auto parts, businesses are struggling and customers unhappy. With the Kenyan shilling down 6% this year, the cost of fuel and imported spare parts is soaring so much that some people are choosing to ditch their cars and take public transportation. “This has been the worst,” said Michael Gachie, purchasing manager with Shamas Auto Parts. “Customers are complaining a lot.’’ Gyrating currencies have caused economic pain around the world many times before. During the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s, for instance, Indonesian companies borrowed heavily in dollars during boom times — then were wiped out when the Indonesian rupiah crashed against the dollar. A few years earlier, a plunging peso delivered similar pain to Mexican businesses and consumers. The soaring dollar in 2022 is uniquely painful, however. It is adding to global inflationary pressures at a time when prices were already soaring. Disruptions to energy and agriculture markets caused by the Ukraine war magnified supply constraints stemming from the COVID-19 recession and recovery. In Manila, Raymond Manaog, 29, who drives the colorful Philippine mini-bus known as a jeepney, complains that inflation — and especially the rising price of diesel — is forcing him to work more to get by. “What we have to do to earn enough for our daily expenses,″ he said. “If before we traveled our routes 5 times, now we do it 6 times.” In the Indian capital New Delhi, Ravindra Mehta has thrived for decades as a broker for American almond and pistachio exporters. But a record drop in the rupee — on top of higher raw material and shipping costs — has made the nuts much costlier for Indian consumers. In August, India imported 400 containers of almonds, down from 1,250 containers a year earlier, Mehta said. “If the consumer is not buying, it affects the entire supply chain, including people like me,’’ he said. Kingsland Drinks, one of the United Kingdom’s biggest wine bottlers, was already getting squeezed by higher costs for shipping containers, bottles, caps and energy. Now the rocketing dollar is driving up the price of the wine it buys from vineyards in the United States — and even from Chile and Argentina, which like many countries rely on the dollar for global trade. Kingsland has offset some of its currency costs by taking out contracts to buy dollars at a fixed price. But at some point “those hedges run out and you have to reflect the reality of a weaker sterling against the U.S. dollar,” said Ed Baker, the company’s managing director. Translation: Soon customers will just have to pay more for their wine. ____ Wiseman reported from Washington, Chan from London, Magdy from Cairo and Wieting from Istanbul. Cara Anna and Desmond Tiro in Nairobi; Mehmet Guzel in Istanbul; Krutika Pathi in New Delhi; and Joeal Calupitan in Manila contributed to this story.

Redmi Pad Review: A Budget Tablet That Works Well The Indian Express
Redmi Pad Review: A Budget Tablet That Works Well – The Indian Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/redmi-pad-review-a-budget-tablet-that-works-well-the-indian-express/ When it comes to ‘budget’ tablets, the Indian market can sometimes be very limiting in terms of options. Very often, you will find that most brands are offering the same specifications at more or less the same price. In the budget category—Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000—finding a tablet that stands out can be a challenge. And this is what Redmi is hoping to change with its Redmi Pad. The latest tablet from Xiaomi’s sub-brand packs the promise of good performance with a stylish design. But is that enough? Here’s our review. Redmi Pad specifications: 10.2-inch 2000×1200 display with 90Hz refresh rate | MediaTek Helio G99 chipset | 3GB + 64GB , 4GB +128GB and 6GB RAM+128GB| 8MP rear camera + 8MP front camera | 8000 mAh battery with 18W fast charging | Android 12 with MIUI 13 | Dolby Atmos and quad speakers Redmi Pad price in India: Rs 14,999 for the 3GB+64GB model, Rs 17,999 for the 4GB+128GB model and Rs 19,999 for the 6GB+128GB model Redmi Pad: What’s good? The Redmi Pad might be an affordable tablet, but the device does not look like a ‘budget’ offering. It comes with an all-metal body, the camera module at the back looks stylish and Redmi has even introduced this in a mint green colour option. I had the grey-coloured option with me, which looks stylish, though the lack of a cover means the back is quickly covered in smudges but the screen itself should keep most users happy. But the best part about this Redmi tablet is just how lightweight it is, weighing around 465 gram—that’s less than the iPad (9th gen). That second aspect might appeal to a lot of folks looking for a 10-inch affordable tablet that is not bulky. The Redmi Pad gets a 10.2-inches display with 2000×1200 pixels resolution and a 90 Hz refresh rate. The display itself is excellent, especially if you are buying this tablet from an entertainment perspective. I used this mostly to watch shows on Netflix such as Derry Girls and Rick and Morty on this. I also used the Kindle app to finish a book title and found the experience quite good. But the big screen might not be suited for some games as Genshin Impact just looked terrible on this resolution. The Redmi Pad also comes with quad speakers and Dolby Atmos certification, which means the audio quality was quite good. The audio is not jarring as such which can be an issue on some budget tablets. The Redmi Pad comes with a 10.2-inch display.(Image Source: Shruti Dhpola/ The Indian Express) The Redmi Pad runs MIUI 13 with Android 12 and will get two years of software updates, which means Android 13 and 14. It will come with three years of security updates as well. The Redmi Pad gets a similar software experience as the more expensive Xiaomi Pad 5 which is good to see. Thankfully, there is no bloatware either. Features such as floating windows, split view, etc work well on the Redmi Pad without any hiccups, and multi-tasking should not be a problem for users. The Redmi Pad is not compatible with Xiaomi Pen that launched with the Xiaomi Pad 5, though it will support any capacitive stylus. I don’t have one, so I could not see how the device would respond to this. The Redmi Pad comes with the Helio G99 processor and I have the 6GB RAM option for review. The tablet works fine with basic daily tasks and some gaming. But the performance is not all perfect. With the Helio G99 4G chip, the Redmi Pad works fine with basic daily tasks and some gaming (Image Source: Shruti Dhpola/ The Indian Express) The device also comes with an 8MP front and rear camera. The rear camera continues with a document mode which users will appreciate. This was seen on the Xiaomi Pad 5 as well. I’m not someone who relies on the tablet for their photos, but the camera is good enough for taking pictures in bright light. The document mode remains very useful when taking pictures of notes, etc. The tablet has an 8000 mAh battery with 18W charging support. It will take around four hours to get this to 100 per cent—presuming you are totally out of charge. In my experience, with a 20 per cent charge left, the tablet was fully charged to 100 per cent in around two and a half hours. But the battery will easily last more than two days even with the most heavy-duty usage, including a lot of gaming, binge-watching shows, etc. The battery life of this tablet is its strong suit. Redmi Pad review: What’s not good? The Redmi Pad’s big distinction is supposed to be around the performance. And while I liked the daily performance, you can see that once you push it too far, the tablet has its limitations. There are moments when you see a slight lag or stutter as you open the multitasking window or even when switching between apps. I played Asphalt 9 on the tablet, which worked fine, but then more resource-intensive games like Genshin Impact just don’t look so great and can be a struggle. But to be fair, it’s not something I expect a tablet like this to run smoothly as the experience is not designed for the bigger screen. This is not to say the Redmi Pad has terrible performance, it’s just that at times, I could see a hint of sluggishness.  The Redmi Pad comes with a 10.2-inch display.(Image Source: Shruti Dhpola/ The Indian Express) Redmi Pad review: Should you consider it?  When it comes to picking a tablet, software and hardware both play a critical role. With the Redmi Pad, both work well in sync, though the performance is perhaps not all that it is hyped up to be. Where I think the Redmi Pad enjoys an advantage compared to some others I have reviewed with a similar price tag is with the battery and the display. If you are looking for a budget tablet, the Redmi Pad delivers well for the price.

Representatives from the National Labor Relations Board will be counting ballots from a union election at an Amazon warehouse near Albany, New York. Amazon says roughly 800 people are employed at the warehouse. Amazon Labor Union is leading the organizing effort. It has faced several roadblocks since its win on Staten Island this April. Amazon also hasn’t acknowledged the union. Experts note racking up more wins could offer the union more leverage to drag the company to the negotiating table. Stocks rally on Wall Street in latest volatile move Stocks closed sharply higher on Wall Street, marking the latest about-face for a market that has been unsteadily lurching between gains and losses in recent weeks. The S&P 500 jumped 2.6% Monday, more than recovering the ground it lost in a sell-off on Friday. The Dow added 1.9% and the Nasdaq climbed 3.4%. Bank of America rallied after reporting earnings that beat forecasts. U.K. government bonds rallied following news that the country’s new Treasury chief was abandoning nearly all of a series of unfunded tax cuts that had upset markets. Key witness in Holmes trial affirms testimony against her SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A key witness in a trial that led to the conviction of disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes adamantly stood by his testimony during an unusual court appearance Monday. The prosecution witness, former Theranos lab director Adam Rosendorff, made a remorseful appearance at Holmes’ Silicon Valley home after the trial, raising questions about potential misconduct. The hearing focused on Rosendorff, who according to Holmes’ partner William Evans had expressed regrets about his testimony during an Aug. 8 visit. But Rosendorff on Monday repeatedly affirmed that his testimony was truthful and Holmes’ conviction was justified. A judge’s ruling is expected by the end of the month. UK leader in peril after Treasury chief axes ‘Trussonomics’ LONDON (AP) — New U.K. Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt has reversed most of an economic package announced by the government just weeks ago, including a planned cut in income taxes. Hunt said Monday he was scrapping “almost all” the tax cuts announced last month by the Conservative government of Prime Minister Liz Truss, and also signaled that public spending cuts are on the way. It was a bid to soothe turbulent financial markets spooked by fears of excessive government borrowing. The move raises questions about how long the beleaguered prime minister can stay in office, though Truss insisted she has no plans to quit. She vowed to lead the Conservatives into the next general election, but many in the party want her gone. UK Treasury chief in position of power as PM Truss struggles LONDON (AP) — As British Prime Minister Liz Truss struggles to retain her authority, one man is seen to be in the real position of power to restore order and credibility to the Conservative government and limit the damage caused by Truss’ economic plans. Jeremy Hunt, Britain’s new Treasury chief, on Monday sought to calm jittery markets and angry Conservative lawmakers as he announced he was reversing the bulk of Truss’ tax-cutting economic stimulus package. Hunt, 55, on Friday became the U.K.’s fourth Treasury chief this year. It’s a return to power for a man who twice ran unsuccessfully to lead the Conservative Party. Hunt, a centrist, has served in top government posts before, including foreign secretary and health secretary. Scholz overrides allies, keeps 3 German nuke plants running BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Olaf Scholz has ordered his ministers to prepare to keep all of Germany’s three remaining nuclear plants running until mid-April to fend off a possible energy crunch over the winter. Scholz’s office said the German leader announced the decision Monday in a letter to the Cabinet. The move overrides the views of two coalition partners who had been locked in a bitter debate over the issue. Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the environmentalist Greens had argued that only two should continue operating beyond the scheduled shutdown on Dec. 31. Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the pro-business Free Democrats had suggested all three nuclear plants could continue operating even beyond April. Kanye West to buy conservative social media platform Parler The rapper formerly known as Kanye West is offering to buy right-wing friendly social network Parler. The announcement comes shortly after West was blocked from posting on Twitter and Instagram for antisemitic posts. West, who is legally known as Ye, was locked out of Twitter and Instagram a week ago over antisemitic posts that the social networks said violated their policies. In one post on Twitter, Ye said he would soon go “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE,” according to internet archive records, making an apparent reference to the U.S. defense readiness condition scale known as DEFCON. The potential purchase of Parler would give Ye control of a social media platform and a new outlet for his opinions with no gatekeeper. US businesses propose hiding trade data used to trace abuse A group of major U.S. businesses wants the government to hide key import data — a move trade experts say would make it more difficult for Americans to link the products they buy to labor abuse overseas. The proposal obtained by The Associated Press was made by an advisory panel comprised of executives from 20 companies, including Walmart, General Motors and Intel. If adopted, it would shroud in secrecy customs data on ocean-going freight responsible for about half of the $2.7 trillion in goods entering the U.S. every year.  Human rights activists say it flies in the face of government commitments to be more transparent on trade. Breast Cancer Awareness Month: How Breastfeeding Protects Mother And Child The Indian Express
Breast Cancer Awareness Month: How Breastfeeding Protects Mother And Child – The Indian Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/breast-cancer-awareness-month-how-breastfeeding-protects-mother-and-child-the-indian-express/ Breast cancer is said to be one of the most aggressive forms of cancer that affects many women around the world. Owing to little awareness about its signs and symptoms, treatment options, etc., its progress is rapid. But, conversations surrounding breast cancer and its prevention happens in tandem with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is understood to be extremely healthy for the newborn baby, who is exclusively fed mother’s milk for a few months after the birth so as to build immunity. The milk keeps the baby fed and hydrated and protects them from various diseases. Doctors, however, have often suggested that breastfeeding can help prevent breast cancer, too. According to Dr Tushar Parikh, consultant neonatologist and pediatrician, Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, Pune — who cites a research done on this — breastfeeding reduces a mother’s chance of developing pre- and post-menopausal breast cancer. “Additionally, continuing to breastfeed past the advised six months might offer added security. During lactation, the majority of breastfeeding mothers have hormonal changes that postpone their menstrual cycles. In the long run, this lessens a woman’s exposure to hormones like oestrogen, which can encourage the formation of breast cancer cells,” says the doctor. How is breastfeeding for at least six months beneficial? Dr Parikh explains that there are no additional liquids, foods, or beverages given to your infant, save breast milk. “Evidence suggests that after six months and beyond, the health advantages and your reduced chance of developing cancer become meaningful. Additionally, breast milk gives your baby all the nutrition and energy they require at this stage of development.” Breastfeeding protects your child from cancer, too, since “there are no other liquids, foods, or consumables given to your infant”; the milk gives your baby all the nutrition they need. (Photo: Getty/Thinkstock) The doctor adds that breast milk meets at least half of your child’s nutritional needs after six months, and one may gradually introduce things like fruits, veggies, and baby cereal after that. “You should keep breastfeeding, though. In addition to being good for your child’s health, continuing to breastfeed above the age of six months increases your protection against breast and ovarian cancer.” Dr Parikh adds that breastfeeding protects your child from cancer, too, since “there are no other liquids, foods, or consumables given to your infant”; the milk gives your baby all the nutrition they need to grow strong and stay healthy. But, what if someone cannot breast-feed? “Never worry about it; don’t forget, adopting healthy living choices is probably the single most effective approach to reducing your chance of developing cancer. It includes things like smoking, eating a lot of fried food and red meat, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, and not exercising. Exercise and a balanced diet are just as effective at lowering breast cancer risk as breastfeeding. If you can, breastfeed; if not, don’t worry too much,” he says. The doctor concludes by saying that while breastfeeding is “highly advantageous”, there are other considerations as well. After menopause, for instance, having excess body fat and being overweight may increase chances of breast cancer. “It is crucial to be aware that alcohol use increases the risk of pre- and post-menopausal breast cancer whereas strenuous exercise significantly lowers that risk.” For more lifestyle news, follow us on Instagram | Twitter | Facebook and don’t miss out on the latest updates!

Lenovo Legion 5i Pro Review: i Stands For Impressive Gadgets Now

Lenovo Legion 5i Pro Review: ‘i’ Stands For Impressive – Gadgets Now https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/lenovo-legion-5i-pro-review-i-stands-for-impressive-gadgets-now/ Powering this model of the Legion 5i Pro is Intel’s Core i9-12900H processor, which comes paired with RTX 3070Ti GPU from Nvidia for handling graphic-intensive tasks. Complementing the brain and brawn is 32GB of DDR5 RAM and a terabyte of PCIe Gen 4 NVMe M.2 SSD. It is possibly the best hardware you can get for its price, and we also have some numbers to solidify this further. In Cinebench R23, the Legion 5i Pro scores 1,928 and 15,767 in single and multi-core tests, perfect numbers for this hardware. In PCMark 10, the laptop got 7,950 points on productivity and 2,310 on storage tests. We also ran 3DMark, and we got a score of 11,686. Do note that we ran these tests in the performance mode. No points for guessing; the Legion 5i Pro did not break a sweat in day-to-day tasks. For context, we used to have around 20 tabs opened in Chrome, having YouTube, Google Docs, Twitter, and a few more apps running in the background. The Legion manages to deliver in the range of 80 to 90 fps while playing intense titles as the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers at high graphics settings. (Yes, we have a soft spot for Marvel games). In contrast, the less demanding titles, such as Apex Legends or Valorant, ran in the range of 150-180 fps. So, to conclude, the laptop is very much capable of running whatever game you want. Though, remember to turn on the performance mode and do not forget to plug it into the wall socket. Lenovo has a new cooling mechanism — CoolFront 4.0 — which promises to keep the temperatures down and works as said. We did not see the temperature going over 85 degrees, and the chassis remained cool even during the extended period of gameplay. Though, the sound of fans blaring can be irritating whenever the laptop gets a little hot. Lenovo’s Vantage app gives deep insight into the machine. You can get the current status of the CPU and GPU and even overclock them. Not just that, you can play a lot more with the hardware using the Vantage. Battery life has never been a strong suit of Windows laptops, and it has been the one major weakness of almost every gaming laptop out there. With 4 hours of life, the Legion 5i Pro is not different. And the 300W charger is so bulky that it gets hard to carry it everywhere with you, so it is a “portable work laptop.”

Walmart CTO Says Crypto Will Become A ‘major’ Payments Disruptor – Cointelegraph https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/walmart-cto-says-crypto-will-become-a-major-payments-disruptor-cointelegraph/ Suresh Kumar suggested that crypto will become an important payment tool across the Metaverse and social media, as these areas will be a major way customers discover new products. 1416 Total views 9 Total shares Walmart’s global chief technology officer (CTO) Suresh Kumar has tipped cryptocurrency to become a “major” area of disruption, particularly in how customers pay for virtual and physical goods in the future.  Speaking at the Yahoo Finance All Markets Summit on Oct. 17, Kumar outlined Walmart’s positive stance on digital assets, noting that “crypto will become an important part of how customers transact” for both physical and virtual goods. “I think that there are three major areas of disruption. Crypto falls in sort of the middle of it,” he said, explaining that “the way in which customers are getting inspired and discovering products” is changing. Kumar also suggested that a significant amount of customers will be marketed to through the Metaverse and live streams on social media apps, and that crypto could be an important payment option in these kinds of areas. “When you specifically talk about crypto, it is going to be about discovery of products, whether it is physical or virtual inside, either the Metaverse or upfront, and then how people transact.” Such may explain Walmart’s recent foray into the Roblox Metaverse, launching Walmart Land in late September. The company is hosting a range of virtual experiences there such as games, a DJ booth and Ferris wheel, while also offering virtual merchandise products called “verch” for users’ avatars. NFTs and crypto are not integrated with the Roblox metaverse at this stage, however Walmart has previously indicated in patent filings from January that it could look to create digital currencies, tokens and NFTs in the Metaverse space sometime in the future. “We want to make sure that we make it as friction free for customers to be able to transact, and to be able to buy, and how they are able to derive value out of it. And that is where– I think a lot of the disruption is going to start happening in terms of different payment methods, different payment options,” he said. Related: Facebook is on a quest to destroy the Metaverse and Web3 The multinational retail giant has been rumored to have been working on rolling out crypto payment support for a while, but so far only false alarms have arisen such as the fake deal with Litecoin (LTC) that was announced via a dubious press release from September last year. As it stands, there were around 200 Bitcoin (BTC) ATMs installed at Walmart stores across the U.S. in October 2021, with plans at the time to expand that number to 8,000 at an unspecified time in the future.

U.S. Could Sell Oil From Emergency Reserve This Week -Sources – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-could-sell-oil-from-emergency-reserve-this-week-sources-reuters/ Crude tankers are shown at the port of Long Beach, California, U.S., March 8, 2022. REUTERS/Mike Blake WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) – The Biden administration plans to sell oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in a bid to dampen fuel prices before next month’s congressional elections, three sources familiar with the matter said on Monday. President Joe Biden’s announcement is expected this week as part of the response to Russia’s war on Ukraine, one of the sources said. The sale would market the remaining 14 million barrels from Biden’s previously announced, and largest ever, release from the reserve of 180 million barrels that started in May. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The administration has also spoken with oil companies about selling an additional 26 million barrels from a congressionally mandated sale in fiscal year 2023, which began Oct. 1, a fourth source said. The Department of Energy will also release further details on eventually buying the oil back, reflecting the White House’s desire to combat rising pump prices while supporting domestic drillers. Rising retail gasoline prices have helped boost inflation to the highest in decades, posing a risk to Biden and his fellow Democrats ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections, in which they are seeking to keep control of Congress. Biden said last week gasoline prices are too high and that he would have more to say about lowering costs this week. David Turk, his deputy energy secretary, also said last week the administration can tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, or SPR, in coming weeks and months as necessary to stabilize oil. The administration has spoken with energy companies about buying back oil through 2025 to replenish the SPR, the sources said, after Biden in March announced the biggest sale ever, 180 million barrels, from May to October. The Energy Department still has about 14 million barrels of SPR oil left to sell from the historic release, because selling was slowed in July and August by holidays and hot weather. Additionally, the administration is mandated by a law Congress years ago to sell another 26 million barrels of SPR oil in fiscal year 2023, which started Oct. 1, a sale likely to come soon, one of the sources said. “The administration has a small window ahead of midterms to try to lower fuel prices, or at least demonstrate that they are trying,” said a source familiar with the White House deliberations. “The White House did not like $4 a gallon gas and it has signaled that it will take action to prevent that again.” Average U.S. gasoline prices hit about $3.89 a gallon on Monday, up about 20 cents from a month ago and 56 cents higher than last year at this time, according to the AAA motor group. Gasoline prices hit a record average above $5.00 in June. The DOE and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the sales. In May, the DOE said it would launch bids late this year for a buy-back of about one third of the 180 million barrel sale. It suggested then that deliveries would be linked to lower oil prices and lower demand, likely after fiscal year 2023, which ends Sept. 30 next year. Two sources said the buy-backs could continue through 2025. Biden officials in recent months also urged oil refiners including Exxon Mobil (XOM.N), Chevron (CVX.N) and Valero (VLO.N) to not increase exports of fuel and warned them it could take action if plants do not build inventories. The administration has not taken a potential ban of gasoline and diesel exports off the table although opponents of such a move say it could exacerbate Europe’s energy crisis and raise fuel prices at home. Ye Says He Bought Parler Because Instagram, Twitter Penalized Him – The Indian Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/ye-says-he-bought-parler-because-instagram-twitter-penalized-him-the-indian-express/ Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, said he was motivated to acquire the conservative social media service Parler by his belief that existing platforms like Instagram and Twitter are too restrictive when it comes to user speech. “When I got kicked off of Instagram and Twitter at the time, I knew it was time to acquire my own platform,” Ye said in an interview with Bloomberg News on Monday. “People had talked about it and mentioned this idea for years, but enough was enough.” The rapper and designer was recently restricted from posting on some major social media platforms for violating their content policies. Twitter Inc. removed an anti-Semitic post from Ye last week and locked his account just a day after he had returned to the platform for the first time in nearly two years. Meta Platforms Inc.’s Instagram also deleted posts over anti-Semitic language. Ye said Parler is for people like him, who have been penalized by much bigger platforms. “We’re using this as a net for the people who have been bullied by the thought police to come and speak their mind,” he said. “Express how you feel. Express what’s tied up inside of you. Express what’s been haunting you. I use social media as my therapist.” Billionaire Elon Musk, who has an agreement to buy Twitter for $44 billion, says he spoke with Ye last week after Twitter froze his account. Ye said Musk didn’t advise him on buying Parler in that conversation, and he came to the decision on his own. Ye said he is planning to have dinner with former US President Donald Trump this week, and will invite him onto Parler. Ye said he’ll join Trump’s own alternative network, Truth Social, too. He has not yet decided if owning Parler means he will fully abandon other social networks, like Instagram and Twitter, saying he plans to speak with his advisors about that. “The most important resource that our species has is knowledge,” Ye added. “This is the reason why the compression of thought and free thought has to be overcome to save the human race. It’s literally that serious. And that’s the reason why I am willing to put everything at risk because they’ve already taken enough from me for differences of opinion.” Ye has been at odds with corporate America, scorning his business partners in order to branch out on his own. His apparel deal with Gap Inc. is winding down after disagreements between the two parties and his sneaker arrangement with Adidas AG has been placed under review by the German athletic-wear maker. He also had a dust-up with bank executives at JPMorgan Chase & Co. Ye declined to share the terms of the agreement. An unaudited balance sheet of his finances reviewed by Bloomberg last year showed that he had $122 million in cash and stock at the time, with billions more in other assets including his lucrative Yeezy business. His company made nearly $191 million in royalties from the Adidas deal in 2020, Bloomberg previously reported.

One-On-One With Avalon Waterways President Pam Hoffee – TravelPulse https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/one-on-one-with-avalon-waterways-president-pam-hoffee-travelpulse/ In an interview with AGENTatHOME, Avalon Waterways President Pam Hoffee discusses a new ship debut, the line’s ongoing commitment to travel advisors and what distinguishes it from the competition. What are Avalon’s Plans to Expand its Fleet? In September, Avalon Waterways announced that it will make its debut on Portugal’s Douro River with a new itinerary and Suite Ship – the Avalon Alegria – in 2024. We’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to add Portugal to our robust vacation portfolio and that day has finally arrived. With the debut of Avalon View in April 2022, our total fleet in Europe has grown to 14 Suite Ships with two additional Suite Ships on the Mekong in Southeast Asia. We also provide our guests the opportunity to cruise the Nile, Ganges, Amazon and the Galapagos Islands. How has Business Fared this Year and What’s Your Outlook for 2023? As cruisers look for a big-ship alternative, river cruising is continuing to garner more interest and more bookings. Sales have been solid for 2022. We’re at 90 percent of the bookings we had in 2019 from the U.S. market and growing. In fact, in August we saw more bookings for 2022 than we received for August 2019. Early bookings for 2023 have us back at pre-pandemic sales with more opportunities for growth. What are the Key Selling Points for Avalon Waterways in Terms of its Ships, Itineraries and Excursions? Offering travelers “Classic,” “Discovery” and “Active” options on every river cruise itinerary, Avalon Choice presents guests with a variety of excursions and onboard activities each day – all engaging in their own way. We’ve put together as many as 28 included excursion choices on our Active and Discovery itineraries, placing the compass firmly in the hands of our guests to choose any direction – and any experience – they desire. Avalon’s ships feature two full decks of 200-square-foot Panorama Suites, each featuring an 11-foot-wide wall of floor-toceiling windows that open seven feet wide, the widest-opening windows in cruising. This wall of glass converts the room into an Open-Air Balcony. How Important are Travel Advisors to Your Business? Travel advisors are at the heart of what we do and every decision that we make. The majority of our bookings come from travel advisors, so we’re committed in every way to supporting them. One recent example of that commitment happened during COVID when we changed our policy to pay commission at the time of payment rather than the time of travel. It was our way to help advisors get much-needed funds flowing back into business. We have no non-commissionable fares, and pay full cruise commission on land extensions, which no other line does. Our team of business development managers are deployed around the country and ready to work with advisors to grow their business. What Advice Would you Give Agents on How to Sell Avalon Waterways? Become an Avalon Waterways Specialist and let your clients and potential clients know that you are a specialist in river cruising. We’re a platinum partner to ASTA and we will, once again, take part in the River Cruise Expo in Budapest in March 2023. Go and learn about all the river lines and see what makes each company unique. You will benefit from seeing our ships side-by-side. Qualify for and travel on one of our Suite Rewards fam cruises. Once you’ve booked your trip, build a group around your planned sailing. That way, you’re guaranteed to be there with your clients, regardless of how many you book. If you do earn enough to quality for a tour conductor [TC] credit, you get to keep the TC as extra commission.

$275M Verdict For Toxic Exposures At Washington School – Kentucky Today https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/275m-verdict-for-toxic-exposures-at-washington-school-kentucky-today/ MONROE, Wash. (AP) — A jury in King County has awarded $275 million to ten students and parents who say they suffered serious neurological injuries from chemical exposure at a school northeast of Seattle. The lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals is the fourth to result in a multimillion-dollar verdict, The Seattle Times reported. The company owns chemical giant Monsanto, the manufacturer of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. The first three lawsuits resulted in jury verdicts of $268 million distributed to 14 plaintiffs. One lawsuit is ongoing and 16 more await trial. More than 200 students, parents and teachers from the Sky Valley Education Center, an alternative school in Snohomish County, have sued Monsanto over environmental contamination. They say Monroe School District knew PCBs were found on the campus, but, despite cleanup efforts, toxins were still being found into 2019. Exposure to the PCBs led to health effects including neurological problems, skin lesions, cancer, hormonal diseases and other illnesses, plaintiffs said. PCBs were banned by the EPA in 1979 but still remain in some structures including in lighting ballasts at Sky Valley before they were replaced. Bayer Pharmaceuticals said in a statement that it disagrees with the verdict and plans to appeal, as it has with prior verdicts. Bayer also claims failures on the part of the Monroe School District. Redhill Beefs Up Metaverse Offering With Pixel Canvas Tie-Up – Marketing Interactive https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/redhill-beefs-up-metaverse-offering-with-pixel-canvas-tie-up-marketing-interactive/ Redhill is expanding into the metaverse scene by collaborating with US-based enterprise metaverse platform Pixel Canvas for interactive and immersive brand experiences. The agency will leverage Pixel Canvas’s platform and technologies in brand campaigns and communications strategies, adding a new dimension to omnichannel storytelling for clients. Redhill hopes to transform customer experience and deliver real business outcomes through the partnership. Jacob Puthenparambil, founder and CEO of Redhill, said its metaverse offering is designed to help its clients understand and capitalise on this next massive wave of disrupting businesses and industries and arm them with the strategies and technologies they need to fully capitalise on these new virtual worlds. Through using programming, connected animation, and gamification, Redhill will enable its clients to create immersive brand experiences by organising experiential conferences, events, client presentations, and product launches to drive enhanced user engagement. Formerly a VR game company, Pixel Canvas began designing and delivering 3D virtual event prototypes to Fortune 500 companies such as Verizon and WarnerMedia. As interest in the metaverse rose and demand grew for immersive and visually appealing virtual experiences, Pixel Canvas pivoted to developing a full platform capable of delivering enterprise-grade metaverse experiences that were highly customisable, scalable, interactive, and accessible. One of Pixel Canvas’ projects to date is “Unlockverse” 3, a virtual mall experience built for Unlock Venture Partners. Users could visit each of the venture capital firm’s portfolio companies in their own virtual space and view product images and company information, as well as watch real-time discussions and, have live chats with staff. Pixel Canvas’s platform is powered by Unreal Engine 5 – touted as an advanced real-time 3D creation tool for photorealistic visuals and immersive experiences – resulting in lifelike experiences that invite better immersion and engagement than existing metaverses. To date, Pixel Canvas’s library contains over 25 templated environments, 30 minigames and five escape rooms that can all be fully reskinned to meet a brand’s needs, complemented by a full set of networking features such as video and text chat, live streaming and more. Additionally, these experiences are cloud-rendered for scalability and browser-based to be accessible by any connected device. “Through our partnership with Redhill, our companies will be able to deliver immersive experiences to transform how brands connect, collaborate, and communicate in a fully realised metaverse,” Joey Lee, founder and CEO of Pixel Canvas, said. The company also looks forward to working with Redhill to explore creative opportunities in the fast-growing Asia Pacific region. This latest news builds on the other offerings that Redhill has launched in the past year. Most recently, Redhill acquired Singapore-based Vision Strategy Storytelling as part of the agency’s efforts to further strengthen its sustainability offerings, providing creative visual storytelling solutions centred around social impact and sustainability for the agency and its clients. Earlier this year, the agency established a new creative technology and design unit – Redhill Studio – that offers creative design, video and podcast production, and website and web application development. This is in addition to Redhill providing the entire suite of end-to-end integrated communications solutions, including strategic counsel for public relations, digital narratives, crisis management, marketing, internal communications, and branding across industries and sectors.
