The teaser showcases Venue N Line being driven in Hyundai Mobility Adventure, at Hyundai’s owned space on Roblox. This space consists of multiple attractions developed specially for the launch, such as the Event Square, N Line Zone, Racetrack & India Zone. The Hyundai head of sales, marketing and service greets all the visitors entering the metaverse.
The entire interactive module built on the Roblox platform was conceptualised by Innocean Worldwide India along with expert inputs from the specialist Metaverse team at their Seoul HQ.

Fuu is a different kind of cool from the typical anime brawler. Fuu is pretty darn cool because she carries herself and her spirit boldly throughout Samurai Champloo. She isn’t afraid to get emotional, nor is she afraid of a good fight.
She thinks on her toes and is always helping others, not to mention she can eat more food than humanly possible. When all is said and done, Fuu’s strongest skill is inspiring others, which she exemplifies throughout the entirety of the show.
5 Kibagami Jubei
Dark and brooding, Jubei is one of the originators of the cool, but disturbed, action hero in anime having starred in the 1992 anime film, Ninja Scroll. As a mercenary and an ex-ninja, Jubei is well-versed in battle, but his quick-thinking and even quicker movements are what give him an edge over the demons he battles.
Jubei might be a typical anti-hero, but given the edgy nature of the film and its dark subject matter, Jubei is still pretty cool.
4 Motoko Kusanagi
As a cyborg, Kusanagi is well-equipped to deal with just about any threat, but her human intellect and reliance on gut feeling is what gives her character the coolness personified element. Her gadgets and wicked cool uniform only help her in the coolness department, especially her hacking abilities.
Kusanagi has a dedicated personality that shines when she is assisting her team or tackling terrorist threats in both the Ghost in the Shellfilms and the anime series.
3 Twilight
Twilight, AKA Loid Forger, is a masterclass spy who is loyal to his mission objective until the end. But, he’s also an amazing Dad for a made-up family that is integral to him successfully completing his mission in the hilarious new anime series, SpyXFamily. Twilight is cool beyond cool, having both the fighting chops and mental fortitude to be dangerous and covert at the same time.
A man of mystery, Twilight makes everything he does seem cool; even his analytical thought process is unbelievably cool to his adopted psychic daughter.
2 Jotaro Kujo
The strong silent type, Jotaro is usually five steps ahead from his foes. Fans of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure adore Jotaro for his snarky commentary, insane fighting abilities, and resilience in the face of evil. The man does not mess around and anyone that screws with him gets a fistful of Platinum Star.
Jotaro is also a man of few words, and for this, his coolness levels shoot through the roof. Not to mention his various outfits are astoundingly cool each season of the show he is in.
1 Ryuko Matoi
One of the roughest and toughest, and of course, coolest, anime characters to exist – Ryuko is the personification of badass. Like many cool anime characters, Ryuko trusts herself, but she also isn’t afraid to rely on others when the going gets tough, even for her.

President Joe Biden approved another $600 million transfer of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine Thursday night.
Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said the security assistance brings the total given to Ukraine to $15.1 billion since Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
This tranche of military systems, equipment and gear includes cold weather gear for Ukrainian service members, Ryder said.
The Ukrainian military has scored a notable military success near Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city, with thousands of Russian soldiers driven across the border back into Russia. Ukrainian officials said they’ve taken many Russian prisoners and are continuing to drive Russian soldiers from their country.
The latest tranche of gear includes mobility artillery rocket system ammunition; precision-guided, 155-mm rounds; 105-mm, artillery rounds; systems to counter unmanned aerial, mine-clearing equipment; and night vision devices.
Ryder said this transfer still allows the U.S. military to do what needs to be done. He noted that the United States, while the largest donor to Ukraine, is not the only donor. The United Kingdom has transferred more than $2.3 billion to Ukraine. Other nations — many members of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group — have also donated equipment, training or money, he said.
Ryder said U.S. military leaders will continue to keep an eye on the situation and ensure that U.S. stocks are replenished. “The bottom line is that U.S. military readiness is not in jeopardy or close to being in jeopardy,” he said. “We’re confident that we can continue to support Ukraine in their fight going ahead.”
Addressing Ukraine’s supply needs will be front and center as U.S. officials — in coordination with NATO — will host a special session under the auspices of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group with senior national armaments directors on Sept. 28, in Brussels. William LaPlante, DOD’s undersecretary for acquisition and sustainment, will represent the United States at the meeting.

BEIRUT – The President of the American University of Technology (AUT), Dr. Ghada Hinain, has declared the University’s decision to award an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters (Doctorate Honoris Causa) to HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, founder and chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG.Global) for his lifetime achievements in the service of humanity in the fields of knowledge and innovation.
The awarding occurred during the commencement ceremony of 250 graduates in the presence of MP Simon Abi Ramia, representative of Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister-designate, Najib Mikati.
Dr. Hinain addressed the attendees at the ceremony saying: “We, at the University, have successfully turned crises into points of strength, determination and solid will for a bright life. Today, despite the current crisis in Lebanon, and the repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic, political and economic clashes, regionally and internationally, we have our youth who managed to combine science and technology with national values and ethics.”
She added that the youth of Lebanon are the real fortune, identity, civilization and legacy, noting that Lebanon is different from other countries, and the world is in dire need of our country, Lebanon.
For his turn Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the honoring of the Doctorate Degree. He addressed the graduates and briefed them on his life story since his displacement from Palestine and his refuge in Lebanon, and the suffering he passed through which constituted the main motive for excellence and success in building the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global, the global organization for professional services, education and tech product, operating in more than 100 offices around the world.
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh, further, called on graduates to embrace innovation and inventions in the field of knowledge which is considered the key to overcoming all crises, noting that innovation is not restricted to anyone, and a single inventor could be the savior of a whole nation.
In this context, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh cited the examples of Google, Amazon and Facebook, saying that the budget of each one of them equals the budgets of all Arab countries combined, explaining that these corporations are purely knowledge inventions and computer programming software.
“My deep belief in the importance of invention and innovation guided me to establish the first of its kind university in the world, the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh University College for Innovation (TAGUCI), which graduates students based on presenting an invention, not just passing examinations.”
At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh presented technological devices, manufactured by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh for Technology, a member firm of TAG.Global, to outstanding graduates.

Britain’s top financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has issued a warning about cryptocurrency exchange FTX operating in the U.K. without authorization. “Almost all firms and individuals offering, promoting or selling financial services or products in the U.K. have to be authorized or registered by us,” said the regulator.
FCA Warns About FTX Operating Without Authorization
The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) published a warning on its website Friday regarding crypto exchange FTX. The regulator detailed:
We believe this firm may be providing financial services or products in the U.K. without our authorization.
The FCA explained that FTX is not authorized but is targeting investors in the U.K. Firms carrying out specific crypto asset activities in the U.K. must comply with the amended “Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations,” and register with the FCA.
“You will not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), so you are unlikely to get your money back if things go wrong,” the financial regulator warned, elaborating:
Almost all firms and individuals offering, promoting or selling financial services or products in the U.K. have to be authorized or registered by us.
FTX has been trying to expand its operations in Europe. The company established FTX Europe in March and said it had secured approval from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC).
In May, the U.K. government outlined its plans to support crypto adoption and affirmed its commitment to regulate stablecoins.
Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said in April: “It’s my ambition to make the U.K. a global hub for crypto asset technology, and the measures we’ve outlined today will help to ensure firms can invest, innovate, and scale up in this country.” His former colleague, Glen, similarly said: “We want this country to be a global hub — the very best place in the world to start and scale crypto-companies.” However, the government’s crypto plans may change under the new prime minister, Liz Truss.

(NEXSTAR) – Home buyers open to embracing a new state will get a lot more house for their money, a new study shows.
An analysis by The Ascent, which rates and reviews personal finance products, found that the average median home price in the first quarter of 2022 was $428,700.
In the 10th least expensive state, Louisiana, the average price is less than half that, at $214,522. If Mardi Gras, mouth-watering culinary options and a fascinating history are not enough to draw you to the Pelican State, don’t worry, there are cheaper options.
In Kentucky, home to the iconic Derby and Mammoth Cave National Park, the average price dips below $200,000, to $197,644.

There’s also good news for home buyers in all states. An analysis of home sales data by Redfin shows that, on average, U.S. homes purchased during a four-week period in August sold for less than what sellers were asking. That hasn’t happened since at least March 2021, according to the real estate brokerage.
“The only times you get homes going above list price is when there’s a bidding war, and those used to not be a regular occurrence,” said Daryl Fairweather, Redfin’s chief economist. “And we’re back to a place where bidding wars are unusual, not the norm.”
On average, 7.5% of homes for sale in the four weeks in August that Redfin tracked had a price drop each week, a record high, the company said.
That the typical home is now selling for below the asking price is a sign that the housing market is becoming a bit more balanced, or less skewed, toward sellers.
“It’s significant that now buyers know that when they’re bidding on a home chances are they can get it for less than the asking price and without a competing offer, which was not the case earlier this year,” Fairweather said.
That doesn’t mean some homes aren’t still drawing multiple offers. Some 37% of homes purchased in the four-week stretch of August analyzed by Redfin sold for more than their list price. That was down from 50% a year earlier, Redfin said.

Deals in the software space are likely to increase next year as companies valuation expectations come down and as private equity looks to use its immense cash hoard, according to a Bank of America banker.
“I do think we are going to see an increasingly active M&A market and that’s something that we are very active in,” Bofa tech banker Rick Sherlund said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday. “I think the strategics, the companies with all the cash, would like to see more capitulation in valuation thinking by the private companies.”
“As you go into next year I would expect that you will see more capitulation on valuation expectations and the premiums that are required to make these deals happen,” Sherlund, a former sell-side software analyst added who ranked No. 1 analyst 17 times in a row on Institutional Investor’s all-star analyst.
He also expects that private equity firms with a “boatload of cash” are looking to deploy their funds.
“They are very eager and actively looking at the sector,” Sherlund explained. “I think it suggests that M&A. in the absence of an IPO market, we’re just going to be see a lot more consolidation coming in the sector.”
Sherlund’s comments come after Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) on Thursday agreed to pay $20 billion for design plaform Firgma, double the $10 billion valuation that the firm was valued at in a fundraising round last year. The acquisition news sent Adobe’s shares plummeting, crashing 17% on Thursday.
Sherlund added that the debt markets appears to be working better than they have earlier this year, which could help with financing for deals.
“We are starting to see signs that the debt markets are becoming more functional,” Sherlund said. “We are starting to see more block trades so we are kind of encouraged by increasing financing activity. But I think that’s been a constraint on private equity’s ability to do all the deals that they would like to do. But also, like the strategics, you needed to see greater capitulation and I think as more time goes by companies will have their valuation expectations softened and that combined with a more fully functional financial markets I think will accelerate the pace of M&A.”
Sherlund’s comments come after an Apollo Global (APO) executive on Wednesday said that he doesn’t expect banks to to start financing debt for leveraged buyouts anytime soon.
Banks aren’t likely to fund large transactions until at least the fourth quarter due to the current economic uncertainty, David Sambur, co-head of private equity at Apollo told Bloomberg TV in an interview at the SuperReturn North America conference.
Sambur explained that debt commitments from banks appear to the most problematic issue, but should improve as banks have to make money.

That can mean anything from trying to steal as many wheels of cheese as possible in an Elder Scrolls game to completely ignoring John Marston’s plight in favor of playing poker in Red Dead Redemption. A fairly recent addition to console games that’s almost a game unto itself is photo mode, which can turn open-world games into a form of virtual tourism.
The ability to take screenshots was once the province of PC gamers. It became a default part of console gaming during the eighth generation, when the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One delivered the ability to capture screenshots, with the PS4 controller having a dedicated share button. Photo modes started to become more prevalent as the eighth generation wore on, with games like Batman: Arkham Knight and Marvel’s Spider-Man either launching with the mode or having one added in a post-launch update.
The apex of the photo mode came in Sony’s last high-profile PS4 release, Ghost of Tsushima. The game’s photo mode allowed players to embrace the game’s cinematic influences and create screenshots and clips that emulate classic samurai movies. While not every photo mode is as elaborate as Ghost of Tsushima’s, all of them allow players to capture images in a more precise way than simply hitting a console’s share button.
The obvious utility of photo modes comes in sharing well-composed screenshots on social media. There’s a simple pleasure in using the mechanic beyond showing off a favorite part of a game to friends and followers. Using a photo mode helps players appreciate the work that goes into the massive environments of open-world games, which may have been overlooked otherwise. The artistry of the environment in a game like Horizon Forbidden West is surprisingly easy to ignore when you’re caught up in playing it.
Whether you’re using fast travel to bypass Forbidden West‘s scenic mountain ranges and get to the location of your next quest or mining resources for crafting, it can be easy to trivialize how beautiful the game is. Using photo mode requires taking in scenery that can become wallpaper after prolonged exposure to a game as lengthy as Forbidden West. Creating the best images requires players to engage with a game’s world in a way they wouldn’t otherwise, giving them a chance to explore it the same way they might a city they’re visiting as a tourist. It’s as valid a way to experience open-world games, even one of the best of the year, as actually playing them.

While the U.S. and Dubai have been on good terms, dealings between the two countries are better than ever. The United Arab Emirates is now a top spot for American tourism.
The UAE never shut down during the pandemic, but now that people are getting back to international travel, demand is higher than ever.
United Airlines responded to this demand by creating a direct flight between Newark (EWR) and Dubai International (DXB). A U.S. carrier hasn’t been in the UAE since 2016 due to a feud between U.S. and Persian Gulf Carriers.
The service will begin on March 25, 2023. Emirates Airlines has even agreed to sign a codeshare agreement with the U.S. carrier.
Travelers are excited to have more easy access to a favorite vacation spot. Visitors can now enjoy taking a ride on the Ain Dubai, marveling at the Burj Khalifa and luxury shopping at the Dubai Mall.
To make the deal even sweeter, people flying from both United Airlines and Dubai International can use their frequent flyer miles. Guests will also get any other perks associated with their frequent flyer memberships, like upgrades to Business Class and access to private lounges.
Travelers will be delighted at how much easier it is to get to Dubai. Perhaps other carriers will follow suit.

While the pandemic and lockdowns were wholeheartedly hated by the vast majority, I would be the first to admit that there were also some positive moments that came out of our enforced confinement of 2020 and 2021.
As a self-employed mother with two small children, I felt included in a way that I hadn’t in a long time. There were Zoom pub quizzes, online panel discussions, and a whole heap of new WhatsApp group chats that allowed me to get my social fix in those dark days.
I felt part of society for the first time in many years. We all agreed that public sector workers and shop staff had a rough deal; we compared sourdough starters, clapped on our doorsteps every Thursday, and started to appreciate the simple pleasures of being healthy, together, and having a new horde of Monstera plants to tend to.
No sooner, it seemed, had Covid-19 become less of a “thing”, the war in Ukraine broke out. Again, we clubbed together to do our bit. We raided our wardrobes for warm clothes, people travelled to the borders to take what supplies they could, and a great many opened their homes, inviting in refugees in their time of need.
Many of us are still clinging to the last vestiges of those silver linings, but I feel like that camaraderie, that unity, that “in this together” spirit has now faded into a distant memory.
Even the sense of “togetherness” seen in the queue to walk past the Queen’s coffin as she lies in state, with stories of sandwich-sharing and budding romances, is bittersweet, coloured by a wider sense that dissenting voices are unwelcome. Think of the increase in racist abuse of Black and Asian people on social media, and the heavy-handed policing of protesters who criticise the monarchy.
I really believed that Covid was a turning point. That we would start to care more about each other, take care of our planet, and support each other’s mental health and boundaries. But I’ve noticed that, as we’ve moved forward, this has started to be replaced with a new sense of selfishness.
At first, I thought it was just not being exposed to people for a long time. That people had always been like that, and I’d just forgotten. But as time has worn on, as strangers have cut me up at junctions and the infighting among once-close groups of friends has escalated, I’ve realised that we are now in a state of collective social burnout.
As society reopened, we saw stories about what others had been up to while the rest of us were determinedly doing the “right thing”. Partygate, dodgy deals, the admitted sexism of the government’s SEISS scheme, and, as ever, the small proportion of people profiteering from a crisis.
And now the rot has really set in, and we are still frightened – locked in a third year of fight or flight mode. We have replaced one life-threatening event, the pandemic, with another – the terrifying reality of a cost of living crisis.
A crisis in which, although we live in one of the richest countries in the world, many of us are now in a position where we don’t know how we’re going to manage. Will we be able to feed our children? Heat our homes? Can we just scrape by? Even with the new prime minister Liz Truss’s plan to cap household energy bills at £2,500, it’s still unclear how the average family – or those who are more vulnerable – will cope.
People are going on strike to argue for a pay increase so that they can just about afford to keep the lights on. People are being forced into debt, are worried about losing their jobs, and are having to take drastic action to try to survive.
We’re all tired, and we just want to go back to how things were. We expected Covid to end, and that we – as a society – would continue on our merry way. But there’s no going back.

Like other key events in recent history, including 9/11 and the financial crash of 2008, Covid has left us with a different world. We have to work out if we want to continue to be selfless, to think of others – or join the mob mentality and just look after our own. While many would automatically say the former, hardship and fear may influence us to take a more self-serving route. It’s coded into our primal brains to survive, and when it comes to the crunch, the vast majority will save themselves.
Even the Don’t Pay movement that is encouraging people to refuse to pay their energy bills has divided us. There are the people who are doing it on principle, the people who are considering it as their only option, and those who are ignoring it because they don’t want to damage their credit, as who knows what tomorrow holds.
I remember thinking about how terrifying a global pandemic was in March 2020. This unknown, unseen virus threatened to destroy everything that we held dear. But that faceless virus, in hindsight, was a more palatable threat. The selfishness of people across the spectrum of class, wealth and social status now feels starker and more visible than ever.
As a society, we have become more selfish in a post-Covid world, but really, looking at the state of things, who could blame us?

Novelist Neal Stephenson is considered the inventor of the term “metaverse”. Now he wants to make his fictional vision a reality.
In his 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash, author Neal Stephenson describes a digital world called the “metaverse.” Thirty years later, the term is the buzzword for the future of the Internet. Countless companies aim to be part of it.
The main driver is the former Facebook group, which is currently transforming itself from a social media company to a metaverse company and is focusing almost entirely on building its own metaverse – including changing its name to Meta.
No one really knows yet what the metaverse (definitions) will look like one day. In any case, the spiritual father of this vision of the future does not want to leave his baby exclusively in the hands of strangers. Together with Magic Leap founder Rony Abovitz and blockchain entrepreneur Peter Vessenes, Stephenson is working on a free metaverse.
Lamina1: Stephenson wants open metaverse
Lamina1 is the name of the metaverse company Stephenson founded with Peter Vessenes. Together, they want to create a framework for an open metaverse and prevent large tech companies from splitting the digital future.
If Stephenson and Vessenes have their way, there should only be one metaverse that enables different experiences and virtual realities.
“If there’s going to be an open-source blockchain alternative for people who want to build metaverse stuff, what would that look like?” asks Stephenson. “What characteristics would it have as a technology and a social organization?” Lamina1 hopes to address these questions.
Vessenes admits that many people are skeptical at first because of Stephenson’s involvement in the company, “That’s potentially the first question: Is Neal selling his brand out to some fucking metaverse company? But when people talk to us, they conclude this is a principled effort. So, then they ask, ‘Is this real? Are you actually going to try to do this?’”
The question of funding
According to Vessenes, Lamina1 currently employs three engineers. However, between twenty and 200 specialists in immersive and spatial technologies are involved in building the necessary blockchain.
Lamina1 is working more on the metaverse foundation. Later, external developers will be able to add further layers, such as platforms for applications or games.

Since Lamina1 is financed with venture capital, it must refinance itself. But as with many metaverse startups, Lumina1 does not yet have a concrete business model: “The economics are tied to adoption—the more people use it, the more valuable it is,” says Vessenes. He believes the revenue will be similar to that of gas fees on the Ethereum blockchain.
Rony Abovitz: Stephenson is like Gandalf from the mountains
Lamina1 investor Rony Abovitz is enthusiastic about Stephenson’s involvement: “It’s like Neal is coming down out of the mountains like Gandalf, to restore the metaverse to an open, decentralized, and creative order.”
Abovitz founded Magic Leap and once failed in an attempt to make mass-market AR headsets for everyone. With his new startup, Sun and Thunder, he’s working on AI characters that will one day drive their stories independently.
Late last year, the Magic Leap founder showed his first short film. At Lamina1, Abovitz serves as a strategic advisor. He believes Stephenson can lend a moral and philosophical force to the story around a real-life metaverse that money can’t buy.
“Is the world cynical? Or is the world idealistic? Are people wanting to be open and democratic and creative and working in peer-to-peer ways, or do they want everything fed to them? I’m like, let’s grab our lightsabers and give it a shot!”
This isn’t the first collaboration for Abovitz and the sci-fi author. In 2016, Stephenson ran a Magic Leap creative studio in Seattle.
Stephenson’s activities at Lamina1 will not last long. His main occupation remains writing. Starting next year, he will return to it.
“My publisher will send a hit man after me if I don’t fulfill my obligations,” he says, “So when the calendar turns over to 2023, it’s going to be back to the usual.”

The videos were released a series of short clips, explaining why each of the apps was worth downloading.
One of those on her list was Get Your Guide, an app that helps people find the best things to do when arriving in a new destination.
She said: “This app helps you find fun activities to do like tours and excursions in the country you’re visiting.
“The other cool thing is they have a best price guarantee meaning if you can find a better price they will essentially match it.
“So if they’re offering a tour for $160 (£140) and you find the same tour for $150 (£130), they will essentially pay the difference.”
Another she recommended was TripIt – an app that helps create itineraries, including by putting all your different bookings in one place.
Kristina said: “The way it works automatically is it scans your inbox for confirmation emails, so it’s an effortless itinerary.
“All you need to do is forward your emails to Tripit and it detects all the info it needs and creates your itinerary.”
One user was really impressed with the recommendation and commented: “Actually this seems really convenient…every time I book a flight I’m always searching my inbox for the confirmation email weeks later.”
Also on her list of recommendations was Timeshifter, an app that helps combat jetlag and Soar, an app for people who are afraid of flying.

A Web3 technology company, Virtual Nation Builders, recently said it acquired FHM, the firm that created safcoin, South Africa’s touted first proof-of-work cryptocurrency to list on a global exchange. As a result of the Web3 firm’s acquisition of FHM, the cryptocurrency will now “list and merge all its digital use-cases and platforms into the new VNB-built Cowrie exchange and partnerships.”
Supporting Clients’ Digital Needs
Virtual Nation Builders (VNB), a Web3 technology firm, recently revealed it had acquired FHM (Pty) Ltd., the South Africa-based creator of what is dubbed Africa’s first cryptocurrency — safcoin.
In a statement, VNB, which is 30% owned by the blockchain law firm Schindlers Attorneys, described the combination of the two businesses as an important step that will support their respective “clients’ digital needs in the Web3 revolution.”
As a result of FHM’s acquisition by VNB, the safcoin cryptocurrency, which was launched in 2018, “will list and merge all its digital use-cases and platforms into the new VNB-built Cowrie exchange and partnerships.”
Commenting on the plans to list on more exchanges, Neil Ferreira, the co-founder and CEO at FHM, said:
Together with VNB, we plan to extend our global reach with more international exchange partner listings. We had good support from the international crypto market with our first listing, and we are proud to be flying the SA [South African] flag into the global crypto sphere.
Described as South Africa’s first proof-of-work cryptocurrency to list on a global exchange platform, safcoin is reportedly traded on Hotbit and Chainex.
Blockchain Enabled Opportunities
Meanwhile, Maurice Crespi, a partner at Schindlers Attorneys and the CEO of VNB, is quoted in the statement touting the two’s companies’ involvement in the successful auction of the non-fungible token (NFT) of former South African president Nelson Mandela’s arrest warrant.
“The sale gave a glimpse of the possibilities offered by the digital realm through virtualisation. The opportunities that blockchain enables and its applications are no longer limited to finance. The use of blockchain—and specifically smart contracts—can be applied in various industries, including community upliftment and business efficiency,” Crespi explained.

Sept 18 (Reuters) – A group of bank regulators appointed by U.S President Joe Biden is considering new rules which will require big regional banks to add financial cushions that can be used in times of crisis, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
The new steps include the regional banks raising long-term debt that will help absorb losses in cases of insolvency, the WSJ reported adding three people familiar with the matter.
The WSJ report comes over a week after U.S. Federal Reserve chief Michael Barr said that there soon may be tougher rules on large regional lenders after a ‘holistic’ review of bank capital requirements is concluded. read more

Last week, we were reminded that spaceflight is still hard when Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin’s rocket crashed back to Earth shortly after launch. Fortunately, no one was aboard the spacecraft and nobody was injured during the mishap. Read more about the crash and other interesting news on our weekly space news recap.

Bright yellow flames shot off the New Shepard rocket’s bottom shortly after launch. At that point, the capsule’s emergency launch abort system kicked in and lifted the craft off the top, after which it parachuted down onto the ground.
At the time of the accident, the rocket was travelling at approximately 1,126 kilometres per hour and was at an altitude of 8,500 metres. Since it was an uncrewed mission, no one was on board the spacecraft but it used the same kind of rocket that sends paying customers to space. According to AP, the rockets are grounded until an investigation reveals what happened.

NASA sets new Artemis I launch date
After two failed attempts, NASA announced that it is targeting a September 27 launch date for the uncrewed Artemis I mission to the moon. The launch window opens at 11.37 AM EDT (9.07 PM IST) on that day. The space agency said that it is also reviewing a potential backup launch window option for October 2.
This backup launch date is under review because SpaceX’s Crew-5 to the International Space Station is scheduled to launch on October 3. The Elon Musk-owned private space company and NASA are reviewing pre-launch milestones to ensure that there are no clashes. The backup launch date is important because the space agency’s Range Flight Safety Program is still processing the request that the current testing requirement for the flight termination system (FTS) be extended. If the request is not accepted, it is possible that the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft will be rolled back into the Vehicle Assembly Building.

‘Strange’ diamonds in a meteorite
Scientists confirmed the existence of lonsdaleite in ureilite meteorites that came from a distant dwarf planet. Lonsaleite is a rare hexagonal form of diamond that could potentially be stronger than conventional diamonds.
Interestingly, the research produced evidence that the lonsdaleite was formed by a supercritical chemical vapour deposition process that is similar to how “lab-grown” diamonds are manufactured. Scientists propose that this process happened on the dwarf planet after a “catastrophic collision.”

The ‘Lobster Nebula’ in dazzling red
NOIRLab released this image of the nebula NGC 6357 captured by the Dark Energy Camera. The star-forming nebula is also known as the “Lobster Nebula.” The Dark Energy Camera’s original purpose is to help the Fark Energy Survey discover and understand dark energy but it also occasionally captures stunning images of distant cosmic objects.
The Lobster Nebula is about 8,000 light-years away from the Earth and has the open star cluster Pismois 24 near its centre. This cluster is home to some unusually massive and bright stars, which can be seen in the image. The Webb telescope captured an image of the Orion Nebula and its young stars cocooned in disks of gas and dust. This image is actually a composite of several filters which represent emissions from ionised gas, hydrocarbons, molecular gas, dust and scattered starlight.
At the top right of the image, the Trapezium Cluster is visible, It is a group of young stars that are very hot and massive. This cluster emits ultraviolet radiation that is slowly eroding away the most prominent feature in the image—the Orion Bar that stretches from the top left of the image to the bottom right.

Turning back the clock on a supernova remnant
This image of the supernova remnant called SNR 0519-69.0 is a composite image created using X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray telescope and optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronomers studying SNR 0519 have discovered clues that can help determine the timeline of the star’s explosion.
SNR 0519 is the result of a supernova that is classified as Type Ia. Scientists use Type Ia supernovae for a wide range of scientific studies, from studying thermonuclear explosions to measuring the distance to galaxies that are billions of light-years away.

‘Baby planet’ in the making
Planets are formed from protoplanetary disks, which are rings of dust and gas that surround young newly-born stars. Hundreds of such disks have been spotted throughout the universe but astronomers have rarely actually observed actual planetary birth and formation.
Scientists at the Harvard & Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics stumbled upon some observations that could help detect “newborn planets” in the future. While examining ALMA data of a protoplanetary disk, researchers observed two separate and bright bunches of materials orbiting within the disk. According to the researchers, these clumps serve as evidence of a planet forming in the disk.

Thanks to games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, farming and life-simulation games are back in fashion. They’ve also dominated September, as Disney Dreamlight Valley launched earlier this month and games like Harvestella, Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, Fae Farm, Rune Factory 3 Special, and a brand new Rune Factory title all got segments in the latest Nintendo Direct. Harvestella even got a demo after the September 13 Nintendo Direct — one I immediately downloaded to get my farm on early.
Getting into it though, I found that Harvestella already has a problem I’ve noticed in many titles that are part of the genre boom, including Disney Dreamlight Valley: they don’t get to the farming fast enough, damnit!
While that might seem obvious, recent games in the genre have had long-winded opening before the player has any farming tools in hand. As players come to these games for the farming and simulation elements, developers looking to join in on the trend may want to take some pacing cues from games like Stardew Valley by trimming down their front-heavy lore drops and getting players to the fields sooner.
Let’s jump into it
Part of the beauty of Stardew Valley is how quickly it immerses the player in the game’s core concepts. The indie hit lets players loose to farm or build within 10 minutes before slowly expanding systems outwards and letting players get more invested in the game’s world and story. You’ll know whether or not you’ll like Stardew Valley within 10 minutes of playing, and will already have crops that give you a reason to stick around if you do like it.
In both Harvestella and Disney Dreamlight Valley, it takes at least 30 minutes for any farming elements to be introduced, and even longer before players can get caught up in the gameplay loop of tending to their crops or customizing their home as the game intends. I was eager to try Disney Dreamlight Valley via Xbox Game Pass when it released earlier this month. After getting hit with an immediate exposition dump followed by slowly paced tutorials and a weapon-collecting quest, I got bored with it and dropped out just as it was opening up for me toward the end of the first hour. It didn’t entice me and I had other things to do and games to play.
Shortly after, I checked Harvestella’s demo out after it dropped during the September 13 Nintendo Direct. I expect I’ll end up playing more when it launches, as I’m intrigued by its world and mix of action RPG and fantasy sim. That said, I found myself trudging through the demo as I had to deal with lots of exposition and simple “walk to” objective gameplay before I could actually get to any farming or RPG elements. While I’m glad I didn’t stop playing the demo, I almost did due to the glacial pacing.
I wish Harvestella had more quickly gotten me into its gameplay loop before then dumping its intriguing lore on me. That’s not to say the story isn’t important in these kinds of games. Some of the most memorable parts of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are getting to know the residents that you live alongside. The sim elements are what draws the most players in, as well as what will get them into a routine that they can get hooked on.
Devoting over 30 minutes to an hour of extra playtime in a game that can last dozens of hours may seem like arguing over semantics, but the first few moments of the game can make or break an experience. And when you’re in a genre with so much competition these days, players can easily move on to something equally as interesting if they aren’t immediately hooked. The best simulation experiences cut the fluff, get players right into the action, and save the deeper elements for later. Future farming and life simulations game should take note if they want to potentially take off as Stardew Valley did.

After gas prices soared to new heights, even crossing the $5 mark months ago, fuel costs have gone in the other direction. The question now is how low will they go, and how long will they stay there?
Gas prices nationwide have been falling daily for three months — 94 consecutive days on Long Island as of Saturday to be exact — due to declining consumer demand and oil prices, growing recession fears, the slow implementation of European sanctions on Russian oil imports, and other factors, fuel industry experts said.
The average price of a gallon of regular gas on Long Island on Saturday was $3.522, 30% lower than the price June 15, when it hit a record high of $5.046, according to AAA. The price a year earlier was $3.282 per gallon.
Several stations in the region were charging $3.09 on Saturday, according to the Gas Buddy price comparison app.
Experts’ opinions vary on how long prices will keep falling.
The wholesale price of gas suggests that retail prices will continue to fall for the next couple of weeks, said Scott Hoyt, senior director of consumer economics at Moody’s Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Denton Cinquegrana, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service in Rockville, Maryland, agreed, saying he expects Long Island’s average price to continue to decline through September.
Chris Lafakis, director of energy and climate economics at Moody’s, said he isn’t expecting much more change in 2022.
“I expect gasoline prices to remain near their current levels through the end of the year,” he said.
These projections are based on seeing no major changes in supply and demand.
“As to factors that could raise gasoline prices, I would look for gasoline usage,” Hoyt said. “Does it stay seasonally weak as it was over the summer or pick up? Beyond that, anything that drives up the price of oil would drive up the price of gas: Less flow from Russia to world markets, hurricanes in the Gulf, or any other supply disruption,” he said.
For some Long Islanders, the needle hasn’t moved enough on gas prices.
“It’s still high … No matter what, you still have to go to work,” Denise Lewan, 58, said Friday while fueling her Honda CR-V at an Exxon station in Farmingdale. The Selden resident is still trying to conserve fuel because she expects prices to start rising again soon, she said.
“Now, it’s more like, try to carpool, don’t go to the store if you don’t have to, don’t take any long rides,” she said.
Miguel Espinosa, 25, who is a salesman at a Lexus dealership in Farmingdale, was at the Exxon on Friday fueling an SUV the dealership is selling.
Neither rising nor falling gas prices affect the amount he chooses to drive his own vehicle, the Freeport resident said.
“I feel like gas prices are like one of the things that you are forced to do if you commute somewhere, especially to work… it is what it is. There’s nothing you can really do about it,” said Espinosa, who said his employer was more affected by rising gas prices because it has to keep the vehicles it is selling fueled.
The biggest factor in falling gas prices is the price of crude oil declining significantly since peaking in June, experts said. Crude is refined to make gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products.
After the European Union enacted sanctions on imports of Russian oil in June in response to the country’s February invasion of Ukraine, “the concern was that a lot of Russian oil would not make it to the market,” which helped to drive up the price of oil, said Cinquegrana of the Oil Price Information Service.
But member countries of the EU have been slow to implement those sanctions, and China, India and other countries that weren’t on board with the sanctions in the first place are buying discounted Russian oil, he said.
Russia is the third-largest producer of crude in the world.
The cost of crude is the largest component in the retail price of gasoline, accounting for 53.6%, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The price of benchmark U.S. crude was $122 per barrel on June 8. It was $85 on Friday.
Meanwhile, high gas prices led consumers to cut back on their driving over the summer, which is typically the peak season for car travel.
Gas demand is 9% lower than it was a year ago, said Lafakis, of Moody’s.
“That has helped to take pressure off pump prices,” he said.
Compounding consumers’ worries are inflation being near a 40-year high and the possibility that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again to try to counteract the soaring prices of goods — and push the United States closer to a recession, he said.
The Fed, which hiked interest rates by 75 basis points in July, is expected to raise them between 50 and 75 basis points at its meeting next week, Lafakis said.
“In terms of recession, the concern isn’t so much whether … [this week’s] hike will take us into recession, but more of whether the cumulative effect of interest rate increases that are expected to continue into next year will do so,” he said.
New York state residents could see gas price hikes statewide — roughly 19 cents more per gallon for Long Islanders — in January due to fuel tax breaks expiring.
The state’s motor fuels tax was rolled back under a “tax holiday” that started June 1, as part of efforts to offset high gas prices, and will run through Dec. 31.
The reduction took off 16 cents (8 cents of excise tax and 8 cents of sales tax) of the 33.35 cents of state fuel tax per gallon. There is an additional three-fourths of a cent of state sales tax suspension in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District, which covers New York City, Long Island and five other counties in the metro area.
Also, Nassau and Suffolk counties were among 24 counties that enacted partial fuel tax caps that went into effect June 1.
With Nassau and Suffolk counties’ partial tax caps, the first $3 per gallon of gas is taxed at the 4.25% county sales tax rate, while the remaining amount will not be taxed. At $3.50 a gallon, the county savings are about 2 cents per gallon.
Nassau County’s tax cap will expire Dec. 31, while Suffolk County’s will expire Dec. 1.

Great Wolf Lodge is a family-friendly resort with 20 US locations that all have indoor water parks.
While my family typically vacations at Disney, we decided to try a Great Wolf in North Carolina.
It was half the price of Disney and my kids liked the water park and interactive games more.
My family loves Walt Disney World but chose to stay at a Great Wolf Lodge resort this summer because it was half the price. It was just as memorable and included a huge suite and tons of activities.
We stayed at Great Wolf Lodge in North Carolina, and visited nearby areas like the beach.

My family loves visiting Walt Disney World and we try to travel to the Florida theme park as often as our schedule and budget allows.
We last visited Disney World in February and wanted to return again this summer, however opted instead try a Great Wolf Lodge resort in North Carolina when we saw that a Disney trip would cost more than twice the price.
A stay at Great Wolf Lodge was not only less expensive, but included a spacious room, lots of fun activities, and gave our kids the same feeling of escaping to another place, just like a Disney vacation. My kids loved how much the lodge had to offer and by the time our stay was over, they said they liked it more than our Disney trips.
Here’s how our stay went.

A major advantage that Great Wolf Lodge has over Disney is that they don’t have only have two US locations. Rather, Great Wolf’s website shows that they have 20 lodge locations across the country, all of which come with indoor water parks, and are located near major landmarks or cities with a lot to offer.
My family picked the lodge in North Carolina, however, because we were excited to explore the surrounding including popular beach cities like Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, along with historically significant places like Charleston, South Carolina; and Savannah, Georgia.
We also added stops and a couple night’s stay at boutique hotels in these cities for a few days following our time at Great Wolf, before driving back up to Charlotte, North Carolina, to fly home to Utah.
Doing so allowed me to expose my kids to other beautiful parts of the country beyond Florida, which is one of the things I don’t love about visiting Disney so often, where I feel like our options are more limited.
In the future, I hope to visit additional Great Wolf Lodge resort locations near other landmarks and popular destinations.
We were impressed with the resort from the moment we arrived and stepped into the lobby.
Like Disney resorts, Great Wolf Lodge was designed around a theme. But instead of movie memorabilia, we were in a forest with trees, woodland creatures, and fairies.

The first thing I noticed as we pulled up to the resort in Charlotte, North Carolina, was how big it was.
The resort is comprised of 402 guest rooms spread throughout multiple buildings, in addition to another building housing an 80,000-square-foot water park adjacent to a massive lodge and lobby area. My 6-year-old daughter thought it felt like a city, and I agreed. The hotel was so large, that we couldn’t see from one end of the sprawling resort to the other.
Like Disney World Resort hotels, Great Wolf made my family immediately feel like we’d escaped life as we knew it and been transported to a fantastical new place. But instead of being surrounded by Disney sculptures and animated movie memorabilia, we were deep in a forest surrounded by leafy trees, starry nights, woodland creatures, and fairies.
Upon entering the lobby and reservations desk area, we were greeted by a costumed character named Wiley the Wolf and snapped a photo together. While I checked in, my children ran to a nearby stage where employees and a cast of woodland creatures were singing songs and telling stories in what I later learned is called, “The Great Clock Tower Show.”
I booked a hotel suite that was not only cheaper than any room I’ve stayed in at Disney, but much larger, too.
Our suite was huge and had a woodland theme.

We booked a premium room called a Deluxe Wolf Den Suite. It was huge and included 765 square feet to comfortably fit my family of six in one room.
It came with two full bathrooms with a tub in each, a kitchenette, two private balconies, two flat screen TVs, two bedrooms, and a large living area. There were three queen beds, two full-size sleeper sofas, and a cave-themed sleeping area with bunk beds and an adjacent smaller bed within the same aptly-named wolf den.
The woodland theme continued throughout the room, including paw prints on the shower curtains, a campfire mural, rustic furniture, and log pillars and beams.
The website said the room could sleep up to 12, so it’s no wonder our family had no problem finding a place for each kid to call their own.
By contrast, most standard rooms at Disney World only sleep up to five, so my family always has to upgrade to a family suite at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort when we stay there. That suite is always fun, but only offers 565 square feet, one bedroom with a queen bed, one murphy bed that pulls down from the wall in the living room area, and a pull-out sofa bed in the same room.
We loved Great Wolf’s entertainment options and how many activities were available to guests.
Our stay included many unlimited activities, and we paid for an additional premium pass for games like laser tag.

I thought that staying at Great Wolf Lodge was not unlike a theme park.
Our reservation included unlimited access to the park’s massive indoor water park plus other daily attractions and entertainment options such as a drawing class, character meet-and-greets, arts and craft projects, family-friendly yoga and aerobics, nightly dance parties, and much more.
Beyond the included activities, the resort also sold passes for premium attractions for an additional fee. There were two options for $59.99 each that provided access to different activities, and a Wolf Pass for $79.99 that combined those passes for access to all premium activities.
We chose the Wolf Pass, and received an interactive magic wand with unlimited access to play an accompanying wand game, a preloaded arcade card, candy, one game of indoor bowling, one scoop of ice cream, a bag of sand and gemstones to mine, an XD theater show with 3-D glasses and moving seats, one game of laser tag, one round of outdoor miniature golf, swimming goggles, and other games.
It ended up being more than our family could do in three days, especially because our kids loved spending time at the water park. But we took advantage of nearly everything our passes had to offer and I can’t think of any Disney hotel that comes close to offering so many activities on-site and out of the parks.
The aforementioned magic wand was particularly cool and felt like something out of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal. My kids loved using them around the resort as part of interactive games.
My kids’ favorite game was a quest led by an interactive magical wand.

Our kids couldn’t get enough of an interactive game called MagiQuest where each child used a magic wand to play the game. Our kids’ wands were equipped with built-in technology that allowed them to interact with various touch points around the resort.
During dinner, for instance, our youngest daughter realized that, to her delight, if she pointed her wand at a nearby mechanical bird, it would move and sing. My other daughter kept pointing hers at an artificial tree branch that extended over our table, causing the leaves to shake gently and light up.

1. Avoid mistakes related to electrical sockets
One of the most common accidents that can happen are when children insert their finger into electric sockets that are situated at lower levels. There is a high possibility of toddlers putting their fingers in the socket and getting electrocuted. Charging cables left unattended or plugged to a socket is also a concern. Toddlers tend to put the cable in their mouth.
2. Keep medicines away
Another common mistake that people make in making their house baby proof is leaving prescribed medicine boxes or tablets in front of the child. Toddlers tend to swallow these pills. Earlier, mothers used to take iron tablets during their second or third pregnancy. These pills were usually in red colour which attracts the toddler and they tend to swallow it. This can lead to an episode of iron poisoning. Don’t let the babies chew on things not meant for them. Feed these iron-rich foods for toddlers instead!

3. Kerosene in a different bottle
When kerosene is kept in a different bottle (such as Coca-Cola or any other soda bottle), the toddler can consume the liquid which can lead to Kerosene poisoning. This is mainly seen in lower income families.

The placement of furniture at home needs to right to baby proof the house. The sharp edges of the furniture can result in a head injury.
5. Height of bed
A toddler can severely hurt themselves when the parents leave the toddler unattended. For example,if the toddler is in bed unattended, they can either fall or jump off the bed, leading to an injury. Parents must make sure the height of the bed or cot is not more than 1 feet. Healthy sleeping habits for a children are the path to a healthy and happier future.

6. Staircases and open balconies
Families living in apartments must be cautious of staircases/open balconies. Children tend to fall or hurt themselves. Children also tend to put their feet, hands and head in between the balcony grills. This can lead to falling or severe injuries when unattended. During the pandemic, this was the most common accident seen in households with a toddler. We saw a minimum of 1 case per week.
7. Ferocious dogs
Friendly dogs are ideal for a house with a toddler. Toddlers are unable to handle or pet a dog the right way, and ferocious dogs tend to bite back when they are not pet the right way. It’s good to be cautious if and when you’re trying to baby proof the house.
8. Swallowing batteries
Swallowing small batteries is another accident toddlers can face. When small alkaline batteries are swallowed, it enters the food pipe or the oesophagus and then the stomach. It can cause an injury, perforation or a hole in the oesophagus. This is quite dangerous and it has to be handled very quickly.

Hamilton Presented With Joe Lapchick Award
Florida State men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton received the Joe Lapchick Character Award presented by the Joe Lapchick Foundation during a ceremony at the New York Athletic Club.
Hamilton was honored with the award which celebrates the life and career of Joe Lapchick, a Hall of Fame coach at St. John’s University (1936-47) and the New York Knicks (1947-56), who was well known for his compassion and integrity off the court. The award is given to coaches who exhibit honorable character and who have impacted the game of basketball as did Lapchick.
“When I got the call, associating me with the Joe Lapchick Award, I was honored to be mentioned in the same sentence,” said Hamilton. “If we know anything about his career, he always fought for what he thought was right, representing the sometimes underserved and disadvantaged, for women’s rights and the inclusion of all people in different areas.
“It’s an honor, a privilege, and I’m overwhelmed. I think about all the coaches and players that I’ve worked with who have created this culture that allowed us to be at this point.”
Hamilton is just the fifth head coach from the ACC to earn the award. He joins Georgia Tech’s Bobby Cremins, Virginia’s Pete Gillen, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, and North Carolina’s Dean Smith as Lapchick Award winners from the nation’s top college basketball conference.
Entering his 21st season at Florida State, Hamilton is the winningest coach in Florida State history (395 wins) and the fifth winningest coach in ACC history (395 wins). He has been named the National Coach of the Year five times, including most recently in 2021 when he received the Ben Jobe Award as the National Minority Coach of the Year. Hamilton is a three-time ACC Coach of the Year (2009, 2012 and 2020) and a two-time Big East Coach of the Year (1995 and 199) and is the only coach to be named Coach of the Year in the ACC and the Big East multiple times.
Throughout Hamilton’s Hall of Fame career he is most proud of the graduation rate of his players which exceeds 97 percent at Florida State (73 of 75 seniors), 90 percent at the University of Miami (28 of 31 seniors) and 95 percent for his career (101 of 106 seniors).
“My father went to the ninth grade. My father was extremely tough. My mother was very bright. I had three brothers and a sister. And I knew the only way I was going to improve my circumstances was I had to get my education. My father would say I would have absolutely no money for you to go to college. But you need to go and get your degree.”
Motivated by mentoring his players to become good people, good husbands, good fathers, and good neighbors, Hamilton continuously reflects on hearing from his players on holidays, following the births of their children, and other big milestones of their lives.
“If all I have are Coach of the Year awards and conference championship trophies, what do I really have?” said Hamilton on the eve of the Lapchick Award ceremony. “I am motivated by the successes of our former players, and how they represent themselves and their families in the community.
“I hope that when I hang my whistle up, I’ll be able to look back at my career and be proud. I’ll be proud of the young men and what are doing with their lives, with their families and how successful they’re doing in the social aspect of their lives. That’s much more important than the awards I have won. So for me personally, I’ve never lost sight of the fact that you take in youngsters, and hopefully while they’re with you, they’re growing to go into the type of young men that we all can be proud of.”
Hamilton, who was a finalist for the John R Wooden “Keys to Life” Award in 2000, has been inducted into five different Halls of Fame: UT Martin, 1983; Austin Peay State University, 2000; University of Miami, 2006; Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, 2013; Florida State Athletics, 2021) and was named as an Alumnus of Distinction by Gaston College (N.C.) in 2015.
Hamilton helped lead Kentucky to the National Championship in 1978 as the first associate head coach in program history.
The award was established in 2008 and has been presented to many of the prominent people in college basketball, including Duke’s Krzyzewski, St. John’s Lou Carnesecca, Tennessee’s Pat Summitt, Georgetown’s John Thompson and NC State’s Kay Yow. Broadcasters Dick Vitale and Verne Lundquist, along with writer Jim O’Connell are also Lapchick Award honorees.
Lapchick was the premier center of his time in the 1920s and 30s, playing for the Original Celtics in New York City. Following his playing career, he coached St. John’s from 1936-47 and 1956-65, winning Coach of the Year twice and the NIT four times. At the time, the NIT was considered to be the collegiate national championship. Between his two stints at St. John’s came his eight consecutive winning seasons with the New York Knicks where he took them to the NBA Finals three straight years finished and with a 326-247 record.
Also presented with the Lapchick Character Award at Friday’s ceremony were Val Ackerman (Commissioner of the Big East, first President of the WNBA), Rick Byrd (former Head Coach, Belmont University), and Speedy Morris (former Head Coach at La Salle University).

Hamilton Named Nation’s No. 3 Recruiter
Leonard Hamilton, who begins his 21st season as Florida State’s Head Basketball Coach when the Seminoles play host to Stetson on November 7, has been named as the nation’s No. 3 recruiter by Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster who extensively cover all things college basketball for the Field of 68.
“Leonard Hamilton has flown under the radar in the ACC due to Roy Williams and Coach K, but now, Hamilton has the best résumé in the league,” said Goodman and Dauster. “He has over a dozen 5-star commits in the past, including Scottie Barnes, Dwayne Bacon and rising sophomore wing Matthew Cleveland. Coach Hamilton is known for building depth but quietly handles his own on the trail”
Hamilton and his staff of incredible assistant coaches have built one of the top programs in the nation through recruiting and by coaching the nation’s top talent. The five-time National Coach of the Year is the winningest coach in Florida State history and the fifth winningest coach in the illustrious history of the Atlantic Coast Conference – which has been the best college basketball conference in the nation for nearly 70 years.
Florida State has had at least one player selected in the NBA Draft in 13 of 20 seasons under Hamilton.
Hamilton has continued to stock the Seminoles’ program with the nation’s top talent, as the Seminoles’ recruiting class ranked No. 2 in 2021, No. 3 in 2015 and No. 8 in 2016. Florida State’s 2015 recruiting class included 2016 NBA First-Round selection Malik Beasley, 2017 NBA Second-Round selection Dwayne Bacon, and 2019 NBA Second-Round selection Terance Mann and center Christ Koumadje. The Seminoles’ 2016 class was just as loaded with NBA Draft Lottery pick Jonathan Isaac, First Round pick Mfiondu Kabengele, and Trent Forrest who played in the 2022 NBA Playoffs with the Utah Jazz.
Hamilton’s recruiting prowess has been legendary, and began as he attracted two future NBA Draft Picks (Von Wafer and Alexander Johnson) in his first recruiting class after being hired as the seventh, and now longest, tenured coach in school history.

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) of South Korea revealed plans to move away from imposing traditional video gaming laws on the Metaverse. Instead, the ministry decided to issue new guidelines for incentivizing the growth of the budding ecosystem.
South Korea’s interest in garnering Web3 and the Metaverse ecosystems is evidenced by the $200 million investment it made for the creation of an in-house Metaverse. Running parallel to this effort, the MSIT identified that imposing older regulations serve as a deterrent to the growth of new ecosystems.
In the first meeting of the National Data Policy committee, MSIT noted that “We will not make the mistake of regulating a new service with existing law.” However, discussions around designating the Metaverse as a video game are still on the table.
The ministry decided that new industries — including the Metaverse, autonomous driving and OTT streaming platforms — demand the formation of fresh regulations. In regards to the Metaverse, MSIT raised concerns about hindering industrial growth due to a lack of legal and institutional basis. Revealing the plan, a rough translation of the press release read:
“Establish guidelines for classification of game products and metaverses for rational and consistent regulation and support for enactment of related laws (enactment of special metaverse laws, etc.)”
Previously, on Sept. 1, members of the National Assembly supported an official proposal for the enactment of the Metaverse Industry Promotion Act to support the Web3 industry.

While supporting the growth of new technologies, South Korean authorities continue their crackdown on people running the Terra ecosystem.
South Korean prosecutors claim that Do Kwon, the co-founder and CEO of Terraform Labs, allegedly defrauded investors by issuing LUNA and USTC without notifying investors of the danger that the price of both could plummet together.
As a result, the prosecutors have applied with authorities to revoke Kwon’s and other Terra employees’ passports.

TEL AVIV, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (TEVA.TA) expects to finalise an opioid settlement in the United States by year-end and start paying in 2023, its chief executive said on Sunday.
After years of negotiations, Israel-based Teva in July proposed a $4.35 billion nationwide settlement – mostly cash and partly medicines that will amount to $300 million to $400 million over 13 years – to resolve its opioid lawsuits. read more
U.S. states, cities and counties filed more than 3,000 lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies, accusing them of playing down their addiction risk and failing to stop pills from being diverted for illegal use.

CEO Kare Schultz said the company was working on legal wording that should be wrapped up by the end of September. It then needs approval from states and subdivisions within states.
“When they opt in, once that is all done … then it goes into force and that means the first payments happen next year and go on for 13 years,” Schultz told a news conference. “So, by the end of the year, you should have this clarification that it all comes together and we will start paying next year.”
Teva has denied wrongdoing, saying it sold legal medication that was approved for treatment of pain.
The U.S. opioid crisis has caused more than 500,000 overdose deaths over the past two decades, including more than 80,000 in 2021 alone, according to government data.
Schultz said Teva intended to continue to cut costs by closing some of its sites. Since 2017 it has reduced the number of manufacturing plants to 53 from 80 and it plans to close another 10 in the next few years.
At the same time, Schultz said Teva would continue paying down its high debt level that has dropped to $20 billion from $34 billion and indicated that the company would likely not be impacted by rising interest rates.
