Well, now Amazon is planning something like that for its Echo smart speakers. In a blog post with the not-at-all-dystopian title “Alexa Can Now Help Brands Answer Customer Questions,” Amazon laid out a new business strategy that will allow brands to provide answers to user questions that might relate to the products the brand wants to sell. Amazon gave an example of asking Alexa how to remove pet hair from the carpet. Such a query could cause a brand-backed response to spring forth, offering to send you links to Amazon pages selling the brand’s products. In Amazon’s brand registry system, sellers will be able to view common user questions and attach their branded answers to them. Amazon says the questions and branded answers will be reviewed by content moderators before they can be used by Alexa. (WHTM) — A crash has shut down US 322 Westbound near the Walmart Supercenter in Harrisburg. According to PennDOT, there is a Multi-vehicle crash on US 322 westbound between Mushroom Hill Road and Penhar Drive. All lanes are closed. No word on what caused the accident or if anyone was injured. There is also a crash on the eastbound side of the road. PennDOT has said there is a multi-vehicle crash on US 322 eastbound between Mushroom Hill Road and Penhar Drive This is a developing story. In an ongoing partnership with retailer London Drugs, InDro Robotics stepped up testing of ROLL-E 2.0 last week. Initially, the robot’s cart could be loaded up and sent to meet customers for curbside pickup. The latest phase of the pilot project is testing its ability to make longer trips and drop off orders on people’s doorsteps. CEO Philip Reece says the inaugural delivery in Surrey last week saw ROLL-E successfully travel a distance of several kilometres. “It crossed over a few roads, challenged a few pavements, went up and down some curbs and finally got to its destination,” he told CTV News. “They didn’t have to leave the house. They got a full shopping cart full of full of goods delivered to them. It’s always novel having a robot roll up to your front door to do that delivery.” ROLL-E is operated by a human who monitors cameras and controls the movement. It’s equipped with signal lights and brake lights so passersby can get a sense of where it’s headed. Reece says a big part of the trials the company is doing is monitoring how people react to seeing the machine “trundling about” on streets and sidewalks. “The delivery of the items is actually quite easy. Having the robot interact with the road and the pavement – all very easy. One of the things that we still have to learn and we’re gathering lots and lots of information on is: How do people interact with the robot?” Reece explains. “It’s surprised even us who work with robots all the time how nonchalant people become about it.” However, in situations where someone is taken aback by the robot, Reece says the human can “mic up” and explain what ROLL-E is and what it is doing. Reece says there are plans to ramp up the capacity of this robot and that two more are being built. Ultimately, he thinks the technology will become more commonplace. “We’re trying to gauge what it is that people are going to want. And the only way we’ll really find that is through offering the service more and more,” Reece says. Convenience is one obvious reason people opt for home delivery – whether it’s done by a robot or a person. But Reece says using these fully electric robots has another benefit. “It’s taking a car off the road. How many times do we rush out, we jump into the car, we zip to the store, and we pick up pint of milk or whatever, and drive all the way back. ROLL-E’s fully electric, and we could do all of those deliveries, those short hops, almost as quick but definitely a whole lot more ecologically friendly,” he says. “There’s no carbon footprint for it. The more and more deliveries it does more and more cars we hope to take off the road.” The company has been doing deliveries by drone in more rural and remote areas for some time. Reece says these robots are a better option for urban and suburban locales. He points to California, where robots are becoming more common, as a sign of what may be to come here in Canada. “We’re doing it a little more Canadian. One of the groups is Gospel Cousins, which includes Aspyn Mullins, who is 1 1/2 years old. “She doesn’t do much singing yet,” said the girl’s father Nate Mullins. Nate Mullins, who lives in the McClain County town of Goldsby, said Gospel Cousins features six cousins, all 7 years old or younger. Some live near Denton, Texas, and some live near Talihina.  “Every time we’re able to get together, they sing, whether it’s a family singing during the holidays or at church,” he said, adding that the Plumb Theater Gospel Fest will be their first public performance. “You’ll feel a youthful enthusiasm,” Mullins said. “They like to sing. The U.S. Economy Is Being Pushed To The Brink – The San Gabriel Valley Tribune https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-u-s-economy-is-being-pushed-to-the-brink-the-san-gabriel-valley-tribune/ The U.S. economy is on the brink of a crisis. Tuesday’s release of the Consumer Price Index for August confirmed a disturbing reality: inflation isn’t moderating. This virtually guarantees that the Federal Reserve will continue its path of hiking interest rates, which, as Fed Chair Jerome Powell has said, “will cause pain” to the American economy. August’s worse-than-expected CPI report also sent stocks falling to their worst day since June 2020 – and though the stock market isn’t the economy, it often is a visible sign of the economy’s health. Ultimately, there is a very real and increasing possibility of a severe economic downturn in the U.S. – resulting in a recession, or worse, stagflation, which is a combination of persistently high inflation, slow economic growth, and high unemployment. While many economists predicted that prices would decrease between July and August – due to steadily declining gas prices, which seemed to be giving the economy a respite – the CPI report confirmed the opposite. Prices continued their steady march higher in August, increasing by .1% from July, and 8.3% from a year ago. Just as alarmingly, Core Inflation, which strips out food and energy, rose twice as much as most economists expected – .6% from July and 6.3% from a year ago – a reflection of rising costs for housing and other essential items. Even worse, rising prices are showing no signs of subsiding. As Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers tweeted, this week’s CPI report confirms “that the U.S. has a serious inflation problem.” “Core inflation is higher this month than for the quarter, higher this quarter than last quarter, higher this half of the year than the previous one, and higher last year than the previous one,” Summers went on to say. This unrelenting inflation – which continues to climb despite the 25% decline in gas prices over the last several months – underscores how challenging it will be for the Federal Reserve to bring it back to their 2% target. This current bout of inflation – widespread and “sticky” – is causing concern for economists on and off Wall Street, as the Fed may be forced to take drastic measures to rein in the worst inflation we have experienced in decades. The Federal Reserve only has one tool to combat inflation: raising interest rates, which essentially puts the brakes on the economy by increasing borrowing costs. This slows down demand for goods and services and typically causes unemployment to rise. The latest CPI report drastically heightened the prospect of the Fed delivering an aggressive and painful 100bps – or 1% – rate hike. This would be the first hike of this size in more than 40 years, dating back to the late 1970’s when Chairman Paul Volcker was deliberately trying to send the U.S. into a recession in order to tame inflation. Though, given that this wave of inflation is being caused by limited supply – not purely by strong demand – the Fed risks raising interest rates to a level where they strangle the American economy without immediately curbing inflation. There could be considerable collateral damage if the Fed goes down this path. The International Monetary Fund has estimated that unemployment in the U.S. would have to double to 7.5% – or  roughly 12 million Americans unemployed – in order to crush inflation, triggering another financial crisis in and of itself. If the U.S. enters a recession – or worse, a period of stagflation – the $7.6 trillion lost in U.S. stocks this year may continue to grow, destroying the household wealth that Americans have built up for years in 401ks and similar plans. From a political perspective, this week’s economic news poses a tremendous risk to Democrats, who would prefer to head into midterms with positive – or at the very least, neutral – economic news, and want to keep Americans focused on the fight over abortion rights and tying the Republican Party to Donald Trump. President Biden’s confounding decision to celebrate the passage of his “Inflation Reduction Act” – just hours after the release of a disheartening CPI report – underscores the failure of his administration to develop a reassuring message surrounding this issue, which public polling consistently finds to be Americans’ top priority. That being said, the dangers posed to Democrats’ chances of holding onto Congress in November’s midterms pale in comparison to the dangers of what appears to be an inevitable economic and financial crisis. This crisis will impact all Americans, but especially the most vulnerable among us – namely, seniors and low-income households. Yet, any time the government provides additional aid, it pours gasoline on the inflation fire. Ultimately, a once-in-a-generation pandemic, years of wasteful government spending, a war in Ukraine, and a Federal Reserve that was too slow to react to inflation have pushed the economy to the brink. While it remains to be seen when the economy will break, when it does, we can be sure that it will be detrimental to Americans’ jobs, incomes, and overall quality of life. Jack Norton, a history professor in Minneapolis, started shopping for an electric vehicle early last year. His requirements were simple: all-wheel drive and a price tag under $55,000. At first, Norton noticed that few EVs were being shipped to Minnesota, where car companies are contending with looser emissions mandates than in much of the US. So he expanded his search to other states — and then came the sticker shock. The scant electric models Norton could track down at dealerships were only available in top trims and for amounts far above the starting prices he’d seen in ads and product launch presentations. “You know what vaporware is — when someone advertises some great new software that doesn’t actually exist?” he asks. “That’s what’s happening in EVs.” Much has been written about unctuous car salesmen adding “market-adjustment” fees to capitalize on the current supply-demand imbalance of vehicles. But while that’s certainly an issue, most electric machines are getting pushed up to luxury-car levels far earlier — before even leaving the factory. In July, the average US starting price for a battery-powered vehicle — the figure shown in car commercials and marketing materials — was $47,636. The average sticker price for EVs that were actually made and shipped to dealerships, however, was $61,251, almost one-third higher, according to Edmunds. It’s not that auto companies don’t have affordable electric cars; it’s just that they aren’t making them, choosing instead to crank out more lavish (and profitable) versions. The largest gaps between the promised starting price and available inventory are evident in the most popular models. Kia’s EV6, a hot seller of late, had an average sticker price of almost $54,200 in July, 32% above the starting price Kia has crowed about since launching the car. The pragmatic Chevrolet Bolt — purportedly the most affordable EV in the US at $26,595 — was selling for almost one-third more this summer, at $34,874 on average. John Fitzgerald Weaver, who lives in Boston and builds commercial solar farms, had to schlep to Long Island to find a Hyundai Ioniq 5 without all-wheel drive — the only variant less than $47,500. “When I saw they had it, I was like ‘Sweet, I’ll buy this today,’” he says. No matter that the car came with an extra $1,000 fee, and wouldn’t arrive for more than a month. Of course, there are sound economics behind all this. Arguably for the first time ever, the companies making and selling cars have more demand than supply, according to Edmunds analyst Ivan Drury. Increasing supply takes time, particularly with a new technology like electric drivetrains, and car companies are rushing to add assembly lines and source batteries. In the meantime, they’re pushing prices up. Exacerbating that dynamic is the fact that so many of the current parade of EVs are brand new. In the months after a new vehicle debuts — gas-powered or electric — companies tend to prioritize fancier versions with cutting-edge features, in part because early customers are the most eager and spendthrift. Perhaps nowhere is this tension more clear than at Ford Motor’s Rouge complex just west of Detroit, where the company cranks out both gas F-150 pickups and the battery-powered version dubbed Lightning. Ford hopes to have the capacity to make 150,000 Lightnings a year by the end of 2023, but for now is putting out roughly four or five times as many gas-powered F-150s. While the Lightning can in theory be had for just shy of $40,000, in July it sold for more than double that amount, on average. Ford said via email that the cheaper “pro” version of the electric pickup has been limited to one in five trucks on the assembly line as it hustles to chip away at an overflowing order book. General Motors, meanwhile, pushed the affordable-EV narrative again this month, unveiling an electric version of its Chevrolet Equinox SUV that it says will start selling for as little as $30,000. “To get to a high volume of EVs you have to reach the mainstream market,” CEO Mary Barra told Bloomberg Television. Drury at Edmunds thinks it will be at least two years before a critical mass of battery-powered cars sell at that price point. “Under $30,000, that’s the dream,” he says, “but it seems borderline impossible.” For now, customers aren’t exactly balking. The spread between starting and sticker prices is also massive on gas-powered cars these days, although more pronounced with EVs, which are 30% to 40% more expensive on average. EV buyers already tend to be more affluent, and with auto loans lasting as long as eight years, many are comfortable purchasing higher-trim variants or stacking up expensive options. “It kind of self-selects,” Drury says. “You already have people who have the means to option up a vehicle and if this is their first time in an EV … they’re going to treat it as a milestone purchase.” But affordability is arguably the single largest hurdle remaining when it comes to the more widespread EV adoption that will be necessary to curb emissions. Despite several dozen mainstream electric models entering the market in the past few years, a wide swath of Americans still can’t afford to make the switch. The average EV sticker price in July was also well above the $55,000 threshold for cars to qualify for the latest round of federal tax incentives. Hyundai, for its part, noted via email that most of its new vehicles tend to attract customers keen on added features, even at higher price points. At the moment, the company says 38% of the Ioniq 5 models it’s making are the base variant, a share that it expects to increase “with the normal progression of lifecycle buyer stages.” This logic, however, doesn’t scan with Norton. He thinks car companies should have been hustling to expand EV production earlier and suspects auto executives are just trying to squeeze profits out of gas engines while they still can. “The argument car companies make is essentially ‘capitalism is working,’” he says. “But I teach economic history and what I’m seeing are artificial constraints.” Norton gave up on buying a full EV a few months ago and settled for a hybrid Honda CR-V. It was loaded with a bunch of options he didn’t care about, though still came out around $46,000. Plus, it was available — sort of. “Last we heard,” Norton says, “they’re building it this week.”

While the number one revenue slot still belongs to Chinese conglomerate Tencent  (TCEHY) , Sony (SONY) holds position #2 thanks to the $18.28 billion it raked in over the course of 2021. Microsoft  (MSFT)  came in at number four in 2021. But it’s aggressively pushing for a higher ranking — which is a large part of why it announced its intent to acquire video game publisher Activision Blizzard  (ATVI)  in 2022 for $68.7 billion. Activision Blizzard has a full slate of major name hits in the video game world, from the “Call of Duty” and “Diablo” franchises to “Candy Crush Saga,” which is gained ownership of when it purchased mobile developer King in 2016. However, the path to such a mammoth acquisition has been anything but easy. Activision Blizzard dealt with its own share of scandal in 2021, with CEO Bobby Kotick tangled up in allegations of sexual harassment and facing accusations of trying to ditch the company in the Microsoft sale to dodge liability. The harassment claims have since been settled. The Microsoft/Activision deal also went on pause after the U.K. Competition Authority, which initially launched a probe into the deal, moved its investigation into phase II. TheStreet’s Martin Baccarat reports, “They’re very worried about the impact it would have on the broader competition conditions in not only the U.K. economy but around the world for video games. Berkeley’s Center for Responsible Decentralized Intelligence. The simulated world requires me to complete a series of tasks, each one unlocking a door. My goal is to move from virtual room to virtual room, unlocking doors by solving puzzles that involve creative thinking, memory skills and physical movements, all naturally integrated into the experience.   Louis Rosenberg inside a Virtual Escape Room created by researchers at U.C. Berkeley (2022) I am proud to say I made it out of the virtual labyrinth and back to reality. Of course, this was created by a research lab, so you might expect the experience was more than it seems. And you’d be right — it was designed to demonstrate the significant privacy concerns in the metaverse. It turns out that while I was solving the puzzles, moving from room to room, the researchers were using my actions and reactions to determine a wide range of information about me. I’m talking about deeply personal data that any third party could have ascertained from my participation in a simple virtual application.  As I have been involved in virtual and augmented reality for decades and have been warning about the hidden dangers for many years, you’d think the data collected would not have surprised me. But you’d be wrong. It’s one thing to warn about the risks in the abstract; it’s something else to experience the privacy issues firsthand. It was quite shocking, actually.   That said, let’s get into the personal data they were able to glean from my short experience in the escape room. First, they were able to triangulate my location. As described in a recent paper about this research, metaverse applications generally ping multiple servers, which here enabled the researchers to quickly predict my location using a process called multilateration. Even if I had been using a VPN to hide my IP address, this technique would still have found where I was. This isn’t shocking, as most people expect their location is known when they connect online, but it is a privacy concern nonetheless.   Going deeper, the researchers were able to use my interactions in the escape room to predict my height, the length of my arms (wingspan), my handedness, my age, my gender, and basic parameters about my physical fitness level, including how low I could crouch down and how quickly I could react to stimuli. They were also able to determine my visual acuity, whether I was colorblind, and the size of the room that I was interacting with, and to make basic assessments of my cognitive acuity. The researchers could have even predicted whether I had certain disabilities.   It’s important to point out that the researchers used standard hardware and software to implement this series of tests, emulating the capabilities that a typical application developer could employ when building a virtual experience in the metaverse. It’s also important to point out that consumers currently have no way to defend against this — there is no “incognito mode” in the metaverse that conceals this information and protects the user against this type of evaluation.   Well, there wasn’t any protection until the researchers began building one — a software tool they call “MetaGuard” that can be installed on standard VR systems. As described in a recent paper by lead researchers Vivek Nair and Gonzalo Garrido of U.C. Berkeley, the tool can mask many of the parameters that were used to profile my physical characteristics in the metaverse. It works by cleverly injecting randomized offsets into the data stream, hiding physical parameters such as my height, wingspan and physical mobility, which otherwise could be used to predict age, gender and health characteristics.   MetaGuard Image from Nair and Garrido The free software tool also enables users to mask their handedness, the frequency range of their voice, and their physical fitness level and conceal their geospatial location by disrupting triangulation techniques. Of course, MetaGuard is just a first step in helping users protect their privacy in immersive worlds, but it’s an important demonstration, showing that consumer-level defenses could easily be deployed.   At the same time, policymakers should consider protecting basic immersive rights for users around the globe, guarding against invasive tracking and profiling. For example, Meta recently announced that its next VR headset will include face and eye tracking. While these new capabilities are likely to unlock very useful features in the metaverse, for example enabling avatars to express more realistic facial expressions, the same data could also be used to track and profile user emotions. This could enable platforms to build predictive models that anticipate how individual users will react to a wide range of circumstances, even enabling adaptive advertisements that are optimized for persuasion.  Personally, I believe the metaverse has the potential to be a deeply humanizing technology that presents digital content in the form most natural to our perceptual system — as immersive experiences. At the same time, the extensive data collected in virtual and augmented worlds is a significant concern and likely requires a range of solutions, from protective software tools like MetaGuard to thoughtful metaverse regulation. For those interested in pushing for a safe metaverse, I point you towards an international community effort called Metaverse Safety Week that is happening in December.   Louis Rosenberg, PhD is an early pioneer in the fields of virtual and augmented reality. The Idaho Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (ISTPF) is a nonpartisan program that places scientists, social scientists and engineers in state government to learn firsthand about policymaking while using their knowledge and skills to address pressing challenges facing Idaho. The fellowship, in its third year, is a partnership between Boise State University, Idaho State University and University of Idaho. U of I’s McClure Center for Public Policy Research is the program lead. New fellows Anna Briggs, Ph.D. and Sarah Maher, Ph.D. started their fellowships in late August. Briggs will spend her fellowship year with Idaho’s Legislative Services Offices, and Maher with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. This is the first year that the ISTPF has placed a fellow in Legislative Services Offices. Previously, fellows have been placed with the Governor’s Office of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Governor’s Office of Species Conservation, Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and Idaho STEM Action Center. “The Idaho Science and Technology Policy Fellowship provides a rare experience for Idaho’s scientists, social scientists and engineers to engage with policymaking and policy implementation in Idaho,” Idaho State University President Kevin Satterlee said. “In return, Idaho’s government benefits from the expertise and creativity these fellows bring. The expansion of this program provides an opportunity for the fellows to devote their considerable talents to address timely issues facing our state.” Briggs earned a doctorate in entomology, and a master’s and bachelor’s in animal and veterinary science, from University of Idaho. Her research focused on vector diseases, studying biological factors that affect malaria parasite transmission. Maher is an interdisciplinary researcher with expertise in magnetic studies and data analysis. She holds a doctorate in earth sciences from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, a master’s in geology and geophysics from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and a bachelor’s in physics and astronomy from the University of Victoria. “The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is proud to collaborate with the ISTPF program in providing exciting opportunities for fellows interested in the intersection of policy and science,” said Mary Anne Nelson, Surface and Wastewater Division Administrator at DEQ, a former host office which holds a seat on the ISTPF advisory board. “The program has recruited strong candidates who’ve provided valuable insight and assistance to our department as well as gained experience in policy evaluation and implementation. Expansion at the sector’s more premium end comes as the number of Americans interested in cannabis-related travel has swelled, according to Brian Applegarth, founder of the Cannabis Travel Association and Cultivar Brands, a strategic marketing agency specializing in the cannabis industry. In early 2020, just prior to the pandemic, Cultivar partnered with MMGY Travel Intelligence to analyze the burgeoning cannabis traveler segment. They discovered that 29% of all active leisure travelers in the U.S. could be identified as being part of a growing “cannabis-motivated travel audience.” Findings from a recent pandemic-era survey, released this summer, indicate that the size of that audience has increased to 37% of all active leisure travelers, with Gen Z and millennial travelers, in particular, reporting overwhelming interest in engaging in at least one cannabis-related activity while on vacation. “There’s also this sophisticated kind of connoisseur” that’s emerging, said Applegarth. “And the data shows, if you look at the median and mean household incomes, the cannabis-interested audience has a very compelling profile when it comes to disposable income.” The Scotia Lodge offers a cannabis delivery menu and an outdoor smoking area for hotel guests and restaurant patrons. Just over a year ago, Humboldt Social debuted a second hotel concept, the 22-room Scotia Lodge, located near Redwoods State Park in Scotia, Calif. The property, which plays in the four-star space and is open to working with advisors, lacks any obvious weed-related theming. Instead, the hotel fosters a weed-friendly environment through amenities like a cannabis delivery menu and an outdoor smoking area accessible to hotel and restaurant guests. The pair, which have a combined 14 accommodations and will work with advisors, have long successfully leveraged their wine country surroundings, offering guests access to two on-site wine tasting rooms. More recently, however, co-owners Jim Roberts and Brian Adkinson have leaned into Mendocino’s solid reputation for craft cannabis cultivation, opening a dispensary at the Madrones called the Bohemian Chemist. The dispensary showcases its own house brand, comprised of locally sourced products from cannabis grown at a nearby farm also owned and operated by Roberts and Adkinson. “We already had a crowd of people coming here for wine, and we wanted to make sure we introduced cannabis in a way that remained approachable and tolerable,” said Adkinson. “And you know, those guests are overwhelmingly curious about cannabis. I think some four- or five-star places are reluctant to embrace cannabis tourism because they’re afraid of alienating their clientele. But our experience has been that it doesn’t alienate our clientele at all.” Encouraged by positive guest feedback, the Madrones and the Brambles began building out more robust cannabis tourism-related programming this summer, including cannabis farm tours and a cannabis-infused seven-course dinner series, with each course incorporating a microdose of approximately two milligrams of cannabis. Later this fall, the properties plan to debut a cannabis consumption lounge, which will include a restaurant. Additionally, couples celebrating a wedding at the Madrones and the Brambles can now book “budtending service” for the big event. “Just like people want to have drinks at weddings, we’re finding that a lot of young people are really wanting to consume at weddings,” added Adkinson. “So that’s another indicator, I think, that cannabis is becoming more and more mainstream. Bottom line, we want to normalize it.”
