WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced publication of its seventh report detailing ongoing concerns about egregious working conditions and labor law enforcement challenges in the Dominican Republic’s sugar industry.
While the country’s Ministry of Labor and sugar companies have made important progress, concerns remain about dangerous working conditions, verification of pay and hours, unsuitable living conditions, workers’ precarious legal status and other potential labor rights abuses.
“The Department of Labor remains committed to improving conditions for workers in the Dominican Republic by building on longstanding cooperation to address enforcement and outreach challenges,” said Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs Thea Lee. “Our extensive engagement on these issues protects the rights of workers in the Dominican Republic and in the U.S. by combating unfair competition with exploited labor.”
In addition to visits by other U.S. government officials, department officials have made nine visits to the Dominican Republic since 2011. During their March 2022 visit, they spoke to more than 200 field workers, government and company officials, unions and other civil society groups countrywide.
Today’s publication is the latest in a series of periodic reports since a 2013 Report of Review issued by the department in response to a submission filed under the Labor Chapter of the U.S.-Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement. The 2013 report identified labor concerns in the Dominican Republic’s sugar industry and provided its government with recommendations to improve enforcement of Dominican labor laws.
These reports offer ways for the Dominican Republic’s government and other stakeholders to improve working conditions and labor law enforcement. This guidance will help inform ongoing U.S. government engagement and technical assistance.

In the United States, more state abortion restrictions were passed in 2021 than any other year since Roe v. Wade was decided. One of the most draconian of these was the SB8 inaptly named the “Heartbeat Law,” enacted by Texas Republicans.
Texas Republicans’ extreme abortion ban has no exception for rape or incest, and is designed to prevent doctors from being able to freely carry through with medical practices that are unquestionably in the best physical, mental, and emotional interest of the mother.
Furthermore, a record number of states have taken action to prevent many qualified family planning providers from participating in their Medicaid programs, undercutting access to a broad range of reproductive health care services — including contraceptives and preventive care such as cancer screenings — for low-income people.
With the Dobbs ruling, Americans can no longer rely on federal protections to protect their right to bodily autonomy, and for that reason state officials have outsized power compared to the previous decades.
Access to abortion is not only a fundamental matter of our right to privacy but also a matter of equity and personal and public health:
Restricted access to abortion is associated with negative consequences for pregnant individuals and adverse birth outcomes such as preterm births and low-birthweight infants.
State-level restrictions such as mandatory parental involvement, mandatory counseling, mandatory waiting period, two-visit laws, and gestational age limit laws are associated with an increased risk for infant mortality.
Restrictive abortion policies compound existing racial/ethnic and socioeconomic perinatal and infant health inequities.
Policies that restrict the ability of U.S. funding to support global NGOs that provide or counsel clients on abortion also disrupt access to contraception and HIV testing and counseling, and are associated with worse child health outcomes.
Access to health care affects the ability to effectively manage comorbid conditions during pregnancy that may contribute to overall higher costs of pregnancy.
Women denied abortion due to laws setting gestational age limits are more likely to have worsened economic hardship and insecurity that can last for years.

This is not about being ‘pro-life.’ This is about forcing birth, even if it will literally kill women.
As our next Attorney General, Rochelle Garza is committed to defending the rights of women and pregnant people whenever they’re threatened, and will not pursue litigation to implement Texas’ trigger law nor prosecute abortion providers, including doctors who provide life-saving treatment. In the words of Rochelle Garza: Abortion care is health care, and health care is a human right.
How the Biden-Harris Administration is Delivering for Reproductive Freedom and Abortion Access:
While extremist Republicans on the Supreme Court overruled Roe with Dobbs, President Biden signed an Executive Order Protecting Access to Reproductive Health Care Services. This Executive Order builds on the actions his Administration has already taken to defend reproductive rights by:
Protecting Access to Medication Abortion. Health & Human Services (HHS) will take additional action to protect and expand access to abortion care, including access to medication that the FDA approved as safe and effective over twenty years ago. These actions will build on the steps the Secretary of HHS has already taken at the President’s direction following the decision to ensure that medication abortion is as widely accessible as possible.
Ensure Emergency Medical Care. HHS will take steps to ensure all patients – including pregnant women and those experiencing pregnancy loss – have access to the full rights and protections for emergency medical care afforded under the law, including by considering updates to current guidance that clarify physician responsibilities and protections under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).
Protect Access to Contraception. HHS will take additional actions to expand access to the full range of reproductive health services, including family planning services and providers, such as access to emergency contraception and long-acting reversible contraception like intrauterine devices (IUDs). In all fifty states and the District of Columbia, the Affordable Care Act guarantees coverage of women’s preventive services, including free birth control and contraceptive counseling, for individuals and covered dependents. The Secretary of HHS has already directed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to take every legally available step to ensure patient access to family planning care and to protect family planning providers.
Launch Outreach and Public Education Efforts. HHS will increase outreach and public education efforts regarding access to reproductive health care services—including abortion—to ensure that Americans have access to reliable and accurate information about their rights and access to care.
The Attorney General and the White House Counsel will convene private pro bono attorneys, bar associations, and public interest organizations to encourage robust legal representation of patients, providers, and third parties lawfully seeking or offering reproductive health care services throughout the country. Such representation could include protecting the right to travel out of state to seek medical care. Immediately following the Supreme Court decision, the President announced his Administration’s position that Americans must remain free to travel safely to another state to seek the care they need, as the Attorney General made clear in his statement and his commitment to fighting any attack by a state or local official who attempts to interfere with women exercising this right.
The President’s Executive Order takes additional steps to protect patient privacy, including by addressing the transfer and sales of sensitive health-related data, combatting digital surveillance related to reproductive health care services, and protecting people seeking reproductive health care from inaccurate information, fraudulent schemes, or deceptive practices.
Issuing new guidance to address how the HIPAA Privacy Rule protects the privacy of individuals’ protected health information, including information related to reproductive health care. The guidance helps ensure doctors and other medical providers and health plans know that, with limited exceptions, they are not required – and in many cases, are not permitted – to disclose patients’ private information, including to law enforcement.
The Attorney General will provide technical assistance to states affording legal protection to out-of-state patients as well as providers who offer legal reproductive health care.
The Secretary of HHS directed all HHS agencies to ensure that all HHS-funded providers and clinics have appropriate training and resources to handle family planning needs, and announced nearly $3 million in new funding to bolster training and technical assistance for the nationwide network of Title X family planning providers.
On the day of the Supreme Court’s decision, HHS launched ReproductiveRights.gov, which provides timely and accurate information about reproductive rights and access to reproductive health care. My camper-van trip in Hawaii wasn’t very cheap or very fun.

I rented a camper van in Hawaii for $119 a night. It wasn’t worth it, and it didn’t save me money.
I had issues driving and staying in the van and finding legal spots to park it overnight.
I wouldn’t stay in a camper van on a Hawaiian island or in an overcrowded community again.
Waking up on the beach in Hawaii may sound like a dreamy respite, but my recent stay in a camper van on Oahu was the opposite.
I rented a camper van in Hawaii and regretted it.

During a recent trip to Oahu, I decided to try renting a camper van through Airbnb instead of booking a hotel and renting a car.
Though I was born and raised in Hawaii, I’d never tried this before.
Ultimately, despite the van’s overwhelmingly positive reviews, my trip was far from what I’d imagined.
Here’s what my experience was like and why I would not do this again.
Renting a van includes the risk of last-minute changes.
My hosts messaged me the night before my reservation about a major change to our pickup arrangements.

Stays in mobile dwellings may be subject to changes that you wouldn’t face when staying in permanent structures like hotels.
The van I rented needed last-minute repairs, and I was informed the night before my reservation that I’d need to collect it an hour away from the original check-in location.
Fortunately, the new pickup spot was close to where I was camping, but this could have majorly inconvenienced me.
Finding legal places to park overnight was a challenge.

After booking the camper van, I started searching for places to park overnight. This was more challenging than I’d expected.
First, I looked into RV parks and campgrounds on the North Shore and the southeast side of Oahu.
An RV park would have been an ideal space for the van, but they all required a three-day camping permit. Since I planned to stay for only two nights, each in a different part of the island, this didn’t seem like the best option for me.
Most of the campgrounds were fully booked, but they didn’t offer vehicle camping anyway.
The only place I found that allowed vehicle camping and had a campsite available was Malaekahana Beach Campground, so I booked one night there for $8.37 with my kamaʻāina (Hawaii resident) discount.
For my second night, I secured a parking space at Sun Farm Hawaii via Hipcamp for $59.
There was no user manual with the van, so I had to inquire about a lot of things.
Since there were no instructions in the Airbnb listing, I expected there to be a user manual in a conspicuous place, like this tray.

After I picked up the van, I realized there was no user manual anywhere in the vehicle or on its Airbnb profile.
I had to keep messaging my hosts to ask about countless things, including potential maintenance issues and how to work certain aspects of the rig.
With a rental, you’re on your own for any cleanliness issues.

Unfortunately, with rentals, you don’t always know what you’re going to get.
In my opinion, the van I rented could’ve used a proper cleaning before the keys were given to me.
I certainly was not anticipating a five-star-resort experience, but I was disappointed that basic cleaning protocols didn’t seem to have been followed. The pillows and towels looked dirty, trash was in the van’s nooks and crannies, and the cooler reeked of fish.
Unlike at a hotel, I couldn’t request a new room or fresh towels. I was on my own.
Maintenance issues can be high stakes when your mode of transportation is also your temporary home.
The parking-brake light was stuck on.

There are various risks unique to renting a van, including the risk of maintenance issues. If something happened to the vehicle, my trip would be derailed because I’d be out of a place to sleep and a way to get around.
I’m grateful that nothing catastrophic happened, but even small things worried me throughout my trip. For example, dim headlights made it difficult to drive at night, and the brake lights were stuck on, so I didn’t feel safe driving until my hosts confirmed it wasn’t an issue.
Maneuvering the van was nerve-racking.
I didn’t like driving over this bridge in Haleiwa because it felt too tight for such a wide vehicle.

I’ve driven a van before; I’d traveled in a 2022 Mercedes-Benz Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4×4 a few months before this trip.
But being behind the wheel of this van felt different because it was much older and lacked state-of-the-art technology.
Even just driving 10 minutes up the road after picking up the van felt uncomfortable. At some points I rerouted because I was nervous the camper van wouldn’t fit on narrow roads or bridges.
Parking such a big rig was challenging, especially when technology failed me.
The backup camera stopped working when I tried to park the van for the first time.

After the van’s backup camera stopped working during my trip, I was extra nervous. Without it, it was virtually impossible to see out the back of the van, which made reversing hazardous.
Without the camera or parking sensors, I knew the likelihood of hitting one of the surrounding vehicles was high if another human wasn’t guiding me.
At one point I had someone stand nearby and yell directions to help me pull out of a crowded parking lot. After that, I sought out lots with angled stalls, spots that I could pull straight into, or areas with plenty of open space.
In some cases I adjusted my travel plans to suit the camper van and my safety concerns.
I strategically parked in places with angled stalls to easily enter and exit.

Eventually I learned that safely parking and driving the van required a bit of strategy. I wanted to avoid narrow roads, for example.
I also didn’t end up taking the van to Honolulu because it was too tall to fit in the city’s parking structures and I was concerned about my safety.
For one, I was anxious about driving there, since it can get crowded. And though Honolulu is relatively safe, there were reports of more than 600 car break-ins from late July to late August. The large van would certainly have stood out on the city streets, making it a potential target.
On my first night, I arrived at the campground late and got locked out.
I was supposed to park in this spot for my first night in the van, but I couldn’t access it.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Aging today announced registration is now open for its virtual LGBTQ Aging Summit and Institute on HIV and Aging, which will take place Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7. All LGBTQ older adults, stakeholders, aging service providers, advocates and allies are encouraged to attend.
The first statewide Pennsylvania LGBTQ Aging Summit, convened in 2018, drew more than 300 participants from across the commonwealth to raise awareness and mobilize collaborative efforts. Since that historic event, the department and the Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs have continued to work on issues raised by community advocates, Area Agencies on Aging staff, providers, and other stakeholders. The department anticipates even larger attendance for this year’s summit.
“The LGBTQ Aging Summit is a great opportunity to highlight the department’s ongoing commitment to building more inclusive, age-friendly communities for LGBTQ older adults. The summit is offering tools for LGBTQ older adults to live happy, healthy lives and for allies and service providers to learn how to further support LGBTQ communities,” said Secretary of Aging Robert Torres. “I encourage everyone to register for this informative summit. I would like to thank our LGBTQ-affiliated partners for their continuous support in helping the department provide supportive and affirming services for LGBTQ older adults.”
Day one of the virtual summit will include a keynote speech by Michael Adams, CEO of SAGE (Advocacy and Services for LGBT Elders), an overview of the Pennsylvania LGBTQ Health Needs Assessment Results, a panel discussion on elder equity, and working sessions with two separate tracks concentrating on supporting LGBTQ older adults and on community issues. The second day will focus on aging and living with HIV and include a panel of speakers who will discuss their experiences with growing older and living with HIV, research trends in HIV and aging and the legal landscape of HIV in the commonwealth.
The department partnered with the following organizations to plan this year’s summit: The Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs, Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Office of Health Equity, the Pennsylvania Association of Area Agencies on Aging, SAGE, AARP Pennsylvania, CARIE, LeadingAge PA, Alzheimer’s Association of Pennsylvania, the Elder Initiative at William Way LGBT Community Center, Persad Center, LGBT Center of Central PA, LGBT Center of Greater Reading, Bradbury Sullivan LGBT Center, Montgomery County Office of Senior Services, Southwestern PA Area Agency on Aging, and Union-Snyder Area Agency on Aging.
“The 2018 LGBTQ Aging Summit built tremendous momentum for LGBTQ aging issues in the commonwealth, and it’s been amazing to see the progress made over the past four years to improve services for our LGBTQ communities as we age,” said Heshie Zinman, co-founder of the LGBT Elder Initiative. “We are excited for the 2022 Summit and HIV & Aging Institute as opportunities to reconvene aging services providers and LGBTQ older Pennsylvanians to share ideas and resources that will help us to thrive as we grow older.”
In June, the LGBT Elder Initiative at William Way honored the department with its Founders’ Award for LGBTQ Health Equity for its efforts to support LGBTQ older adults.
These efforts included completing several projects such as including the collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data to help guide planning, programming, and outreach to ensure aging services are inclusive and responsive, as well as launching the HIV/AIDS education and resource page for older adults on the department’s website.

(THE CONVERSATION) More and more colleges are becoming “metaversities,” taking their physical campuses into a virtual online world, often called the “metaverse.” One initiative has 10 U.S. universities and colleges working with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and virtual reality company VictoryXR to create 3D online replicas – sometimes called “digital twins” – of their campuses that are updated live as people and items move through the real-world spaces.
Some classes are already happening in the metaverse. And VictoryXR says that by 2023, it plans to build and operate 100 digital twin campuses, which allow for a group setting with live instructors and real-time class interactions.
One metaversity builder, New Mexico State University, says it wants to offer degrees in which students can take all their classes in virtual reality, beginning in 2027.
There are many benefits to taking college classes in the metaverse, such as 3D visual learning, more realistic interactivity and easier access for faraway students. But there are also potential problems. My recent research has focused on ethical, social and practical aspects of the metaverse and risks such as privacy violations and security breaches. I see five challenges:
1. Significant costs and time
The metaverse provides a low-cost learning alternative in some settings. For instance, building a cadaver laboratory costs several million dollars and requires a lot of space and maintenance. A virtual cadaver lab has made scientific learning affordable at Fisk University.
However, licenses for virtual reality content, construction of digital twin campuses, virtual reality headsets and other investment expenses do add costs for universities.
A metaverse course license can cost universities at least $20,000, and could go as high as $100,000 for a digital twin campus. VictoryXR also charges a yearly subscription fee of $200 per student to access its metaverse.
Additional costs are incurred for virtual reality headsets. While Meta is providing a limited number of its virtual reality headsets – the Meta Quest 2 – for free for metaversities launched by Meta and VictoryXR, that’s only a few of what may be needed. The low-end 128GB version of the Meta Quest 2 headset costs $399.99. Managing and maintaining a large number of headsets, including keeping them fully charged, involves additional operational costs and time.
Colleges also need to spend significant time and resources to provide training to faculty to deliver metaverse courses. Even more time will be required to deliver metaverse courses, many of which will need all-new digital materials.
Most educators don’t have the capability to create their own metaverse teaching materials, which can involve merging videos, still images and audio with text and interactivity elements into an immersive online experience.
2. Data privacy, security and safety concerns
Business models of companies developing metaverse technologies rely on collecting users’ detailed personal data. For instance, people who want to use Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headsets must have Facebook accounts.
The headsets can collect highly personal and sensitive data such as location, students’ physical features and movements, and voice recordings. Meta has not promised to keep that data private or to limit access that advertisers might have to it.
Meta is also working on a high-end virtual reality headset called Project Cambria, with more advanced capabilities. Sensors in the device will allow a virtual avatar to maintain eye contact and make facial expressions that mirror the user’s eye movements and face. That data information can help advertisers measure users’ attention and target them with personalized advertising.
Professors and students may not freely participate in class discussions if they know that all their moves, their speech and even their facial expressions are being watched by the university as well as a big technology company.
The virtual environment and its equipment can also collect a wide range of user data, such as physical movement, heart rate, pupil size, eye openness and even signals of emotions.
Cyberattacks in the metaverse could even cause physical harm. Metaverse interfaces provide input directly into users’ senses, so they effectively trick the user’s brain into believing the user is in a different environment. People who attack virtual reality systems can influence the activities of immersed users, even inducing them to physically move into dangerous locations, such as to the top of a staircase.
The metaverse can also expose students to inappropriate content. For instance, Roblox has launched Roblox Education to bring 3D, interactive, virtual environments into physical and online classrooms. Roblox says it has strong protections to keep everyone safe, but no protections are perfect, and its metaverse involves user-generated content and a chat feature, which could be infiltrated by predators or people posting pornography or other illegal material.
3. Lack of rural access to advanced infrastructure
Many metaverse applications such as 3D videos are bandwidth-intensive. They require high-speed data networks to handle all of the information flowing between sensors and users across the virtual and physical space.
Many users, especially in rural areas, lack the infrastructure to support the streaming of high-quality metaverse content. For instance, 97% of the population living in urban areas in the U.S. has access to a high-speed connection, compared to 65% in rural areas and 60% in tribal lands.
4. Adapting challenges to a new environment
Building and launching a metaversity requires drastic changes in a school’s approach to teaching and learning. For instance, metaverse students aren’t just recipients of content but active participants in virtual reality games and other activities.
The combination of advanced technologies such as immersive game-based learning and virtual reality with artificial intelligence can create personalized learning experiences that are not in real time but still experienced through the metaverse. Automatic systems that tailor the content and pace of learning to the ability and interest of the student can make learning in the metaverse less structured, with fewer set rules.
Those differences require significant modifications in assessment and monitoring processes, such as quizzes and tests. Traditional measures such as multiple choice questions are inappropriate to assess individualized and unstructured learning experiences offered by the metaverse.
5. Amplifying biases
Gender, racial and ideological biases are common in textbooks of history, science and other subjects, which influence how students understand certain events and topics. In some cases, those biases prevent the achievement of justice and other goals, such as gender equality.
Biases’ effects can be even more powerful in rich media environments. Films are more powerful at molding students’ views than textbooks. Metaverse content has the potential to be even more influential.
To maximize the benefits of the metaverse for teaching and learning, universities – and their students – will have to wrestle with protecting users’ privacy, training teachers and the level of national investment in broadband networks.

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — In a universe of cloud computing, northern Virginia might be in a perpetual fog.
More of the data centers that feed the cloud are clustered in the region outside the nation’s capital than anywhere else in the world.
As cloud computing — which enables data storage and other services to be delivered over the internet — continues its exponential increase, the appetite for new data centers continues to grow. And increasingly, communities that abut the centers are complaining about their new neighbors, mostly about the noise from constantly whirring fans needed to cool the computers and servers warehoused within.
“It’s just a constant whir at a frequency that’s obnoxious,” said Dale Browne, president of the Great Oak Homeowners Association. Residents there led a protest recently outside a nearby data center in Prince William County, newly built to support Amazon Web Services.
Browne said he preferred the quarry that used to occupy the land over the data center. And he’s worried that the noise will only get worse in winter, when a line of trees that provides something of a buffer sheds its leaves.
Speakers at the protest said they fear Prince William County is on the verge of joining its neighbor, Loudoun County, which is known as the data center capital of the world.
“We are the canary in the coalmine,” Browne said.
Northern Virginia has been a tech hub since the formation of the internet, and now hosts more data centers than the next five largest U.S. markets combined, according to the Northern Virginia Technology Council.
Collectively, the northern Virginia data centers demand about 1,900 megawatts of power, said Josh Levi, president of the Data Center Coalition, an industry trade group. That’s roughly equivalent to the entire output of Dominion Energy’s nuclear reactors at its North Anna power plant.
Browne and his neighbors say noise from the data center regularly exceeds the local limit of 60 decibels for noise — a study by Amazon disputes this — but it’s largely a moot point because the county noise ordinance exempts air conditioning units. Activists say the ordinance was written more than 30 years ago and never anticipated the massive cooling systems used in data centers.
Amazon Web Services, for its part, said it’s installing acoustical shrouds at the site as part of its noise-reduction efforts.
“Addressing our neighbors’ noise concerns in Prince William County is a priority for us,” a company spokesman said in a statement.
Noise is not the only issue. Spencer Snakard, president of Protect Fauquier, worries that more data centers will require more high-voltage transmission lines to deliver the massive amounts of electricity they require, destroying views and posing their own potential health risks.
“I see these noisy monstrosities much like computers of the 1960s and 70’s: massive, bulky, ugly, and in their infant stage,” she said.
Not all residents are opposed to the data centers. In the Gainesville area, a group of property owners proposed having their land rezoned from agricultural use to allow them. County staff recommended approving this ahead of a Sept. 14 planning commission vote.
Mary Ann Ghadban of Gainesville, 68, is one of the property owners who would sell if the area is rezoned. A lifelong county resident, she built what she called her “dream barn” on her 55-acre horse farm.
“All my neighbors, we were all long-timers. We were going to live here until we died,” she said.
But after the electric company built high-voltage transmission lines through her property in 2008, she said her horses suffered ill health effects, and property values dropped. Housing developers took over nearby tracts, and her rural enclave became something else.
“It breaks our heart, but it’s a fact: It’s not rural anymore,” she said. “We should have had this area open to data centers years ago, because you’ve already ruined the property. You’ve already ruined people’s lives by adding massive transmission towers, so put the data centers where the power is already.”
There’s also opposition from the nearby Manassas National Battlefield Park. Superintendent Brandon Bies likened the threat to Disney’s bid 30 years ago to build a theme park near the battlefield — a proposal environmentalists and other activists famously scuttled — and pushed back against the notion that transmission lines have already destroyed the area’s rural character.
“While indeed unsightly, the agricultural and historic nature of the battlefield’s western edge is still largely intact,” he wrote in a letter to the county board.
Counties that snub data centers would be turning down a lucrative source of tax revenue.
Data centers now provide for more than 30 percent of the general fund budget of Loudoun County, a suburb of the nation’s capital with more than 400,000 residents.
While the windfall has been a boon to Loudoun, Phyllis Randall, chair of the county’s Board of Supervisors, has raised concerns about overreliance on the industry.
“I’m not an economist, but even I know that not diversifying your economy to that degree gets a little dangerous,” she said at a February meeting where a board committee considered plans to manage the data centers’ growth.
Levi, with the Data Center Coalition, said northern Virginia remains a particularly attractive site for a number of reasons. He points to the region’s history as an internet hub for starters — in a business where nanoseconds matter, so does proximity to those hubs, Levi said.
In addition, Virginia was one of the first states to establish tax incentives for data centers.
He acknowledged that community resistance has increased as the industry has expanded. The industry is typically tight-lipped because of its security requirements, and needs to do more to promote its beneficial impacts, along with its advances in designing centers to have less environmental impact, he said.
“I think you’ve seen a lot of continuing innovation and design changes in response to community concerns,” he said.

In July 1950, heavyweight boxing legend Jack Dempsey came to Richmond as a headline attraction for a different event: He was referee of a wrestling match. He stayed at the Hotel John Marshall, which was certainly more peaceful than City Stadium — not having lost a punch over the decades, the 55-year-old got involved in the match there and knocked out the tag team partners Dick Lever and Wally Dusek.

South Richmonders had this view of a Dec. 24, 1951, fire on North Side at the F.L. Parsley storage plant on Rady Street. Three fuel oil and kerosene tanks caught fire, sending black smoke across much of the city. More than 100 firefighters were needed to stop the blaze, which threatened a nearby stream, coal yard and other properties. When the owner of neighboring fuel tanks was told that his were saved, he called it “the nicest Christmas present ever.”

In November 1953, a 10-block section of Monument Avenue between Horsepen Road and Keystone Drive in Henrico County began carrying eastbound and westbound traffic on separate sides of the median. About 20 signs were erected to let motorists know that they no longer shared a single side. The change was in anticipation of expanding the configuration to begin at the city limits.

Sleep underground in an ‘Earthouse’

Settled below ground level is a 2,500-square foot home with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Rounded architecture is a central theme throughout the home, displayed in a rounded wall in the living room and circular light fixtures and windows. Despite a roof of grass, the home has a lot of natural light.
The home was built in 1981 by architect Dennis Spencer and served as the home office of Spencer Architects for several years. Timothy Pilla and Monica Stegall, current co-owners of the “Earthouse” worked with Spencer after graduating from Drury University’s Hammons School of Architecture.
In 2018, when Spencer retired, he wished to pass the home on to someone who would appreciate it, which is when Pilla and Stegall purchased it. After more than a year of restorations, the “Earthouse” became what it is today.
The home made Airbnb’s “Most Wish-listed Rentals of 2022” in February, Stegall said. It is also frequently displayed under the “OMG” category on Airbnb, which filters rental properties that have a true “wow” factor.

The grain silo that now sits near Table Rock State Park was once used on a farm in Kansas. Mike and Debbie Kensinger found the silo and decided to give it a new life as a rental property, moving it to southwest Missouri in 2021. Today, the silo has one bedroom and one bathroom, accommodating up to four guests.
A wooden cable bridge welcomes guests to the wrap-around porch. During the evening, the bridge and fire pit below are illuminated with string lights. Inside, the windows near the ceiling were taken from the childhood home of Missouri artist Thomas Hart Benton, Debbie told the News-Leader. Benton is known for his mural depicting the social history of Missouri in the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City.

INDIANAPOLIS ‒ Jenny Green is sitting on the back porch of her Indianapolis home in a navy blue IndyStar sports polo shirt and jeans, sitting on a wicker chair where she can see chipmunks and squirrels scurrying past in the yard.
She is sitting at her Delaware Street home and, more often than not, she is staring down at her feet.
Green is humble. Praise makes her blush. She hates attention. She likes nothing better than to be behind the scenes making things happen, making things better.
That, after all, has been her life as editor extraordinaire, doing all the stuff that makes a story great, a story brilliant, and doing it with little credit. Editors don’t get bylines and Green has always liked that.
Truth be told, Green doesn’t want to be doing this, either. Being interviewed for a story on her retirement after an illustrious 35-year career of intense, high pressure journalism, helping to churn out newspapers in major metropolitan markets across the United States, her last 20 years at the Indianapolis Star.
Green, 58, retired from her role as IndyStar’s sports director Sept. 1 due to health issues.
Five days later, she is reluctantly telling her story, one of a humble upbringing that shaped her into a woman who, by 23, was the news director at her first paper. Who, by 28, was third in charge at the Cincinnati Enquirer. And who, in her early 30s, was leading the Broward County edition of the Miami Herald.
Green never got the chance to not be in charge. Everywhere she went, people saw something in her, something that said this woman needs to be a leader. Green had a gentle, calming spirit across the newsroom, IndyStar executive editor Bro Krift said.
“She earned her peers’ respect because of her dedication to the craft as well as her devotion to those she worked beside,” Krift wrote in an email announcing Green’s retirement. “She cared about you and me and everyone who came into this newsroom.”
Green’s departure from journalism leaves behind a portfolio that brought readers some of the biggest stories to make headlines in the U.S.
The first Black president, Barack Obama, in 2008. The tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, that changed the landscape of America. The contentious “hanging chad” 2000 election between George Bush and Al Gore in Broward County. Elian Gonzalez, the 5-year-old boy found on Thanksgiving Day 1999 off the coast of Florida clinging to an innertube as his mother died trying to bring her family to the U.S. from Cuba.
In Indianapolis, Green was there for Andrew Luck’s abrupt retirement in 2019, the Pacers-Pistons brawl in 2004, the Hamilton Avenue murders that left three children and four adults dead in an Indianapolis home. And she was there in 2006 for the accident that killed five Taylor University students and ended in the mistaken identification of two victims.
Green was there, too, for Qudrat Wardak, the baby with a bad heart who came to Indianapolis from a squalid Afghan refugee camp. He received his new heart in February 2005, a beacon of joy and hope, then he died three months later.
Jenny Morlan will never forget that little boy’s death because of the devastation, but also because of Green’s heart and compassion.
Green was IndyStar’s front page editor that night in 2005, when she was called over by another editor in the newsroom and told Qudrat had died. Green walked back to her desk, sat down and cried.
“She could barely get out the words, ‘Qudrat died,’” said Morlan, a former IndyStar editor who sat across from Green in the newsroom. “I will never forget that, how much she cared about the people her newspaper wrote about.”
And how much she cared about the people in the newsroom. Green would never ask anyone to do anything she wouldn’t do herself.
Morlan says if a newsroom were a restaurant and, to run smoothly, that restaurant needed the dishes washed, Green would wash the dishes.
As big stories broke, Green would not only edit but pitch in to write sidebars and stories, never putting her byline on them. Just writing to make things better.
Green loved journalism. She still loves journalism.
“If I could have stayed,” Green said from her home last week. “I would have.”
‘She had this presence’
Green is the daughter of artists, a father and mother who sometimes were starving artists. She was a kid in Kansas who, one winter, lived in a tiny one-room studio no bigger than a sun porch with her parents and two brothers. She was a young girl who, in that brutal winter, trudged into the dark, frigid snow to use the outhouse.
She was a student who qualified for free school lunches until her mom, Donna Barker, realized that the kids who got free lunches had different colored cards than the children whose families paid for lunch.
Donna and Ed Barker sent in the money to make sure Green and her two brothers had the cards that would keep other kids from teasing them.
As a young girl, Green tagged along with her parents as they drove from city to city for art shows, her mom a sculptor and her dad a potter.
Her dad, Ed Barker, always said: “It’s no way to make a living, but it’s a great life.”
Green didn’t dream of being a journalist. That wasn’t something a young girl living in remote Kansas in the 1970s dreamed of. But after graduating from high school, Green went to the University of Kansas, where she enrolled in a copy editing class, and loved it. Then she enrolled in more journalism classes and loved those even more.
She started working for the university’s newspaper and knew this would be her career. When she graduated college, Green didn’t have to search for a job. Her first professor took care of that.
“He fell for Jenny,” said her husband, Ted Green. “He saw something there.”
Green was hired as a copy editor at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. But soon, the newspaper saw what her professor had seen. At 23, she was named the paper’s news editor.
Fifteen months later, Green landed a spot at the Cincinnati Enquirer as a copy editor then wire editor, then assistant news editor. And then she became news editor, third in charge at the paper.
That’s when Ted Green met his future wife.
Ted Green was working in Boca Raton and had been out in the sun playing beach volleyball. He was interviewing for the Enquirer’s sports copy desk in the early 1990s. He went to a news meeting surrounded by people, mostly in their 40s and 50s, mostly men.
“And at the far end was this beautiful, 28-year-old news editor, I mean striking,” Ted Green said. When he was introduced at that meeting, Green called him “Tan Ted.” He was hooked.
He watched Green go around the table asking what stories were coming the next day, local, national, what would run on the front page. “Man, she was leading this meeting, a woman in her 20s,” Ted Green said. “She had this presence.”
When he was hired by the Enquirer, Ted Green continued to watch in awe this young woman who, virtually, ran the newsroom. At night, the journalists would go out to the bar after work. Green and Ted ended up at the same bar on more than one occasion. They fell in love and were married in 1994.
Two years later, both got impressive job offers and “Tan Ted” and Green were headed toward the sun.
‘You want to make her proud of you’
In the spring of 1996, the Greens made a new home in Florida working for the Miami Herald. They lived in Hollywood, close to where Green headed the copy desk of the Broward County edition of the newspaper. Ted Green worked in the main newsroom as an assistant sports editor.
Green’s passion to give readers her best, her newsroom’s best, went to new levels.
When a hurricane ended in tragedy in Broward County, a family electrocuted as they tried to save one another walking into waters with downed lines, as people drove off into canals thinking they were on the road, Green and colleague Mary Byrne wanted to make sure those deaths weren’t buried.
They wanted to be sure they were on the front page of the Broward County edition. Green and Byrne drove down I-95, fighting flooding, and pulled into a parking garage by the Miami Herald’s main office. They rolled up their jeans and waded into the newsroom.
And they changed the front page of the Broward edition.
“They were so concerned that the Broward news get that coverage, they risked a lot,” said Ted Green. “They did this on their own. That was their commitment to their readers.”
Paul Anger was there for all of that. He hired Green at the Miami Herald and watched as Green led a copy desk in a Broward newsroom of 100 people.
“She was one of the most calm, pragmatic, organized editors that I had ever worked with,” said Anger. “I remember thinking that she is unusual in this business. There isn’t a lot of drama; there isn’t a lot of hand wringing.”
Green never needed to raise her voice. Though, she said there was one night in Cincinnati that she yelled across the newsroom when a reporter hadn’t closed a file and deadlines were looming.
“So I did that once,” Green said, laughing. “One time.”
But mostly, Green never yelled. She didn’t have to. “People wanted to do well not just for themselves but for her,” said Anger. “You wanted to make her proud of you.”
Green was brilliant and unbelievably competent, said Rick Hirsch, who led the Broward County office during Green’s tenure and is now the senior editor for talent development at McClatchy.
“In some ways, she was too nice to be a journalist,” he said. “She was really kind and level-headed and had great news judgment. She was really just a consummate pro and a delight and had a sense of humor and didn’t take herself too seriously. When you put all that together, how many journalists do you know that check all those boxes?”

As the name suggests, the latest TP09 model focuses on cleaning the surroundings of formaldehyde (CH2O). Most simple yet most reactive of all aldehydes, the colorless gas at room temperature has a pungent smell and is mostly caused by modern furnishings such as wooden products containing (plywood and fibreboard), paint, wallpapers, varnishes, and household cleaning products. The package contains the air-purifier machine, a set of filters, a quick-start guide, and a remote controller. Installing the filters in the base cylindrical body hardly takes a fewminutes.
Push the carbon filters into place on the machine.
Push the HEPA filter into the outer cover.
Put the outer covers into position on the base and push firmly until they both click securely into place.
Once you plug in the machine to the electricity supply, you can start operating it with the bundled remote or can use the smartphone app.

Dyson airpurifiers are easily recognizable with their simple yet effective design. Like any previous Dyson air-purifier, the new model also comprises a cylindrical base unit and an elongated oval top with hidden blades that clean the polluted air sucked in by the 360˚ filters beneath. The top portion is capable of up to 350˚ oscillation to project clean air around the room. A small circular LCD is also positioned on the front to offer critical insights about the air quality, filer life, humidity, airflow speed, etc.
As it goes with most Dyson products, the new air-purifier has a solid build quality and looks aesthetically pleasing. The TP09 air-purifier is 105 centimeters tall, 22 centimeters wide, and weighs 4.86 kg. It is available in two colors- White and Gold. The gold color that we are evaluating looks elegant with its dual-tone color treatment. It goes perfectly with wooden furniture and copper color interiors.
Lastly, the curved and magnetized remote controller sits neatly on top of the machine, which is again a smart design approach as losing such tiny remotes is quite common.
Dyson Air Purifier Cool Formaldehyde (TP09) Performance
The most interesting upgrade is the new setup consisting of the solid-state formaldehyde sensor and the catalytic filter that continuously traps and breaks down formaldehyde molecules into water and CO2. According to Dyson, the catalytic filter uses an electrochemical cell to detect formaldehyde molecules – 500 times smaller than 0.1 microns.
To test the performance, we kept the air-purifier in a room with newly kept furniture, which was reeking of apungent smell, mostly because of the formaldehyde. We kept the machine running throughout the night in auto mode. The airflow speed was increased to the maximum to ensure better performance.
Effective Filtration
The next morning, the room had very little or no presence of the foul smell. Usually, the same pungent smell stays for a few weeks and keeps polluting the indoors. According to Dyson, the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde detects and destroys formaldehyde and continuously removes 99.95% of particles as small as 0.1 microns.
The fully-sealed 360° HEPA filter captures 99.95% of ultra fine particles from the air including the PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants. Combined with activated carbon, it also removes odors and potentially harmful VOCs.
No Heater Mode
The new model is priced almost similarly to Dyson’s Hot+Cool air-purifier; however, it lacks the heater mode. The heater mode is an extremely handy feature if you live in a city like Delhi wherein winters can be pretty cold. At its asking price, Dyson could have included the feature in the new mode.
Moving on, Dyson hasn’t specified the exact coverage area of the new model. Based on our experience with the previous Dyson machines and test results of the new mode, it would easily clean an indoor space with a coverage area of 600-700 sq. Ft. The new model would be projecting 290 liters of purified air per second in the room, which is quite impressive. And the air projected also addresses the annoying humidity in the spaces.
No Replacement Required For Formaldehyde Setup
The interesting bit is that the new formaldehyde sensor and the filter never need replacing, so you can rest assured of the replacement process. However, you would be required to replace the regular filters from time to time and they cost Rs. 6,000.
Silent Performance & Diffused Mode
Despite offering the same powerful airflow, the new TP09 model is fairly silent and doesn’t produce much noise. It won’t trouble you with any annoying humming noise, provided that the fans are set to run at medium speed or the machine is set to run at night mode.
Dyson has also added a new ‘Diffused Mode’ in the new model. It is recommended when you want to purify the room, without feeling the cool airflow. The purified air is diverted through the back of the purifier and dispersed into the room, without creating any cooling effect. This mode is recommended in the winter season.
The new Dyson air-purifier also supports voice commands and is also compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri. If you have an Amazon smart speaker at home, all you need is to enable the Dyson skill to control the air purifier. You can also set routines that automate the machine’s synergy with other devices in your home.
Verdict
We recommend the new Dyson air purifier for homes or businesses with high formaldehyde exposure. For example, the new Dyson TP09 air purifier is ideal for users who spend the majority of their time in paint stores, hardware stores, or furniture stores. It is also an excellent machine for homes with high levels of dust, fumes, and other aldehydes. The price is higher, but the level of protection provided by the new model is unparalleled.

A South Korean crypto and blockchain startup is aiming for the KOSDAQ, the country’s stock exchange, and could become the nation’s first publicly listed company.
The company, named Blocko, has hired one of the nation’s top financial firms – Shinhan Financial Investment – to manage the listing process as the firm seeks to launch an initial public offering (IPO).
News1 reported that Blocko hopes to complete its listing on the KOSDAQ (Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) some time in 2023.
The firm has previously been backed by the likes of the steel giant POSCO, as well as Shinhan Bank. Earlier this year, it received an investment boost of USD 3.6 million from Daehong Communications, a marketing affiliate of retail conglomerate Lotte Group. Some estimate the company’s corporate worth may be as high as $64.5 million.
Blocko is set to work on a number of non-fungible token (NFT) and security token offering (STO)-related products with a number of Lotte Group affiliates, the startup’s CEO Kim Jong-hwan stated.
Another conglomerate backer is CJ, whose IT services arm CJ OliveNetworks last year enlisted Blocko to develop an NFT-based ticketing solution that will be able to fight counterfeiting. CJ has also spoken about its plans to use NFT technology throughout “the entertainment business in the future.”
Crypto’s Long Journey to the KOSDAQ
South Korea’s crypto sector has grown exponentially in the past few years, and prior to the start of crypto winter, few industries in the nation were raking in profits on the same scale.
The country’s two biggest crypto exchanges – Upbit and Bithumb – have both attracted considerable interest in the financial markets, with multiple financial analysts claiming that Upbit in particular may be mulling a Nasdaq listing.
Upbit has been classified as a “very large” company (on the same kind of footing as the likes of Samsung and LG) by the South Korean markets regulator. As such, most agree that the firm is simply too large for an IPO on the KOSDAQ.
Other, smaller crypto exchanges have also been touted as possible candidates for a KOSDAQ IPO. But since the start of crypto winter, talk of plans like these have cooled quickly – with most crypto players posting poor quarterly results.
Founded in 2014, Blocko is one of South Korea’s so-called “first-generation” blockchain companies. The company posted net profits of just under USD 500 million in net profit last year, along with USD 1.6 billion in sales.

Abra, a financial services company and crypto trading firm, announced the launch of three new products: Abra Bank, Abra International, and Abra Boost.
Abra Bank will be a U.S. charted bank that’s expected to offer crypto on- and off-ramps to fiat, with Abra International offering the same for clients living outside the U.S.
The third product, Abra Boost, will offer interest-bearing deposits for cryptocurrencies. International customers can begin earning interest on their holdings from October 3. U.S. accredited investors and institutions in the U.S. will have to wait until the launch of Abra Bank in 2023.
It’s unclear how much these deposits will yield, nor which cryptocurrencies will be available. Abra has not yet responded to Decrypt’s request for comment.
The bank’s CEO Bill Barhydt took to Twitter, claiming that Abra will be the “first operational U.S. state chartered bank—a full bank not a trust.” He said the firm will offer trading, asset management, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and credit cards, among other services and products.

This launch is only the next step in Abra’s long history with crypto.
In December 2020, Abra released its Abra Crypto Marketplace, with access to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more than 650 different cryptocurrencies with onboarding via credit cards, ApplePay, and Samsung Pay.
With the launch of Abra Borrow in 2021, the firm continued down “the road to becoming a complete crypto bank.” The service is available in 35 US states and over 50 countries, offering clietns short-term USD stablecoin loans based on the amount of Bitcoin or Ethereum they hold.
Abra customers can take out BTC and ETH loans with 0% interest rates, too, according to a June 2021 announcement.
Clients can also “access 10% of their holdings for free while still gaining the benefit of any upside price movement of those holdings.”
Abra joins list of crypto banks
Crypto regulation and banking is becoming a hot topic, with Switzerland leading the way and the United States still torn on the issue.
In August 2019, SEBA Bank, a Swiss bank, received regulatory approval to integrate crypto into its traditional banking sector. Over two years later, Ethereum staking was added to the list of crypto services, providing ETH staking services to customers ahead of the Ethereum merge into proof-of-stake (PoS).
In 2020, Switzerland signed the Blockchain Act into law, enabling the simple use of crypto, decentralized finance and blockchain technology, as well as facilitating the creation of digital shares.
In the United States, the emergence of crypto banks has ushered in fresh debate.
In August, the Federal Reserve introduced a new way of granting institutions approval “based on their apparent risk level.” Tier 1 is for federally-insured institutions, 2 is firms “subject to federal prudential supervision,” and 3 is for those that are considered weaker than the two tiers.
Crypto banks from Kraken and Custodia would likely fall into Tier 3.

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. (WKRG) — Students who want to be ready to work straight out of high school might want to give technical school classes a try. Today the South Baldwin Center for Technology is hosting an open house to show the value of learning a trade. The average student loan debt is more than $32,000. Some students want to skip that early life burden altogether.
Today’s open house will run during the school day from 8:30 this morning until 2 this afternoon.
They’ve been expanding programs including the relatively new teacher academy. The school has an enrollment of 286. Many students sign up for the welding program with prospects for jobs right out of school with a local shipbuilding company like Austal or one in Mississippi. Part of the training is teaching students how to work in their chosen industry and how to prepare for life after school.
“They understand how they have to dress they understand how they need to be on time they understand what their role is and they’re expected to complete that role each day so that we feel like if they learn that during the school day it will be an easier transition when they graduate and go into industry,” said Principal Adam Sealy. Another goal here is to remove some of the stigmas around students who don’t plan on going to college and instead promote the need for a skill that unlocks the door to a solid wage.

Sleeping in someone else’s home. That’s what Airbnb used to be all about when it first launched but much has changed since then. Even though it’s still possible to come across a rare personal listing, the accommodation platform has mainly become a place to search for professionally exploited holiday rentals, much like Booking.com or other platforms in the same genre. Yet, sure, when you’re looking for a big home to rent with a whole group, it’s one of the best places to start looking. Yet what if you want to have a party trip instead of a normal vacation? Well, then, you’re not welcome any longer.
The whole party ban on Airbnb started during the pandemic. As people were forced to stay at home, as we weren’t allowed to see friends nor family, some tried to avoid the rules by renting a big, remote house and inviting all their friends for a good old party. Resulting in a rise in infections and causing quite a bit of commotion. Because who were these people that were so reckless amidst a global health crisis? Airbnb therefore explicitly started to forbid any parties at their rentals and even after the pandemic, things aren’t about to change. On the contrary.
Party animals, beware
Of course, organizing a party when you’re on holiday is a very fun idea. You get to invite friends and family and with a bit of luck you get to know new people. Yet if you do so in a house that isn’t yours, this can be quite annoying for the owners. Maybe you’re someone who cleans up after yourself but this isn’t the case for everyone – at all. Some even rent a place for the night, just to leave it in pieces the day after, because their party got out of hand.
That’s why Airbnb is now testing a new algorithm meant to eliminate those party beasts. The technology takes into account different data, such as the number of comments on your profile, the average length of your stays, the distance between your home and the location you’re renting… All of these can be indicating you’re just in it for the party rentals and if the algorithm thinks you’re such a party beast, it will now limit the listings you get to see. The tool has already been test running in Australia for a couple of months and – according to Airbnb – has caused a decrease of 35% of non-authorized parties. The algorithm will now be tested in the United States and Canada for further research.

Puget Sound Kidney Centers President and CEO Harold Kelly announced he plans to retire in 2023. Under Kelly’s leadership, PSKC grew from a small, community-based, nonprofit provider of dialysis to a regional health care organization operating 11 centers in six counties with five more kidney center projects pending throughout western Washington. Kelly led the creation and introduction of PSKC’s Chronic Kidney Disease patient education program, and established the PSKC Foundation, an organization that assists in fund-raising for the PSKC patients in need. To succeed Kelly, the board has hired Thomas DeBord as the incoming president and CEO. DeBord has served as chief operating officer of Overlake Medical Center since 2015. In this capacity he has overseen the day-to-day operations of the hospital, including numerous patient care services, and regulatory compliance. Also, DeBord has had primary responsibility for the planning and implementation of Project FutureCare, Overlake’s major campus renewal project that was announced in early 2016.
King County
The King County Department of Community and Human Services hired Simon Foster as the new division director for housing, homelessness, and community development. Foster led teams among a range of industries, including behavioral health, transportation, homelessness and federal and state funding programs. Foster most recently led operations for the Salvation Army Northwest Division during the pandemic and oversaw outreach, social service programs, and domestic violence outreach services. In this role, Foster will oversee the Housing, Homelessness, and Community Development Division within DCHS. This division’s work includes the Health Through Housing Initiative, a regional approach to address chronic homelessness at a county-wide scale, oversees implementation of anti-displacement strategies for the Skyway-West Hill and North Highline neighborhoods, staffs the Affordable Housing Committee, and manages the transit-oriented affordable housing bond program.

Hecla Mining, headquartered in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, completed its acquisition of Alexco Resource. Founded in 1891, Hecla is the largest silver producer in the U.S. In addition to operating mines in Alaska, Idaho and Quebec, Canada, the company owns a number of exploration properties and pre-development projects in silver and gold mining districts throughout North America. Alexco operates the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory. As part of the acquisition, Hecla issued 18 million shares of its common stock to Alexco shareholders for a total consideration of about $69 million; the silver streaming interest at Alexco’s Keno Hill property held by Wheaton Precious Metals was terminated in exchange for $135 million of Hecla common stock; and Hecla provided Alexco with a $30 million secured loan facility, of which $25 million was drawn when the transaction closed.

Premier Legacy Builders is a residential and commercial remodeling company, with projects ranging from repairs to full rebuilds, and design and layout changes. Preciso was developed to help bridge the unemployment gap for people with language barriers.

In Puyallup, Premier Building Systems’ product line now includes building material systems under the brands Premier SIPS, R-Shield Insulation, R-Shield Geofoam and Premier ICF (formerly Diamond Snap-Form). Also, the Big Sky R-Control SIPs brand is now being marketed under the Premier SIPS brand. Premier says there has been no sale, merger or change in company ownership. It has been family-owned and operated since the 1970s.

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates acquired A to Z Wineworks, a top-selling winery in Oregon. This is the first strategic acquisition for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates under the ownership of private equity firm Sycamore Partners. Together with Ste. Michelle’s Erath Winery, the addition of the A to Z and Rex Hill brands gives Ste. Michelle a substantial presence in Oregon and the combined business will be a leading producer of the state’s signature variety, pinot noir. Amy Prosenjak, president and CEO of A to Z, will join Ste. Michelle as president of Oregon brands, overseeing the company’s combined operations in the state. In addition to Prosenjak, A to Z founding partners Deb Hatcher, Cheryl Francis and Sam Tannahill will join Ste. Michelle as consultants. BNP Paribas Securities served as financial advisor to A to Z. Bank of the West is continuing as the lender to both Ste. Michelle and A to Z. Kirkland & Ellis acted as legal counsel for Ste. Michelle and Tonkon Torp supported A to Z. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ste. Membrion received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Advanced Manufacturing Office, through the Small Business Innovation Research program. The Phase II Award will support a two-year project to develop, implement and optimize a machine vision system to provide real time analytics of Membrion’s roll-to-roll ceramic desalination membrane production line. Membrion, a startup out of Seattle, was created to help industrial facilities recycle more of their water. Membrion’s principal investigator leading the project is Dr. Olivia Lenz, a senior research engineer. Lenz guided Membrion through its Phase I SBIR project, screening 50 membrane inspection systems for quality control and inspection methods. The award includes a stipend to commercialize the technology and its integrated software.

Oregon-based iGrafx, an intelligent process management firm, and Zeitworks, creators of desktop process mining and productivity analysis technologies, have partnered to bring AI-powered process intelligence to global customers. The alliance combines the process mining and business process management from iGrafx with the automated desktop data collection, AI, and real-time analytics from Zeitworks. The partnership creates a comprehensive process intelligence platform by linking process mining, task mining, discrete event simulation, and predictive analytics. Based in Seattle, Zeitworks was originally incubated inside Madrona Venture Labs and is led by technology startup veterans and co-founders Jay Bartot and Kalpana Narayanaswamy. University of Massachusetts Lowell recently took action to highlight its commitment to promoting health and wellness. The university adopted the Okanagan Charter, a document in which post-secondary schools pledge to embed health promotion in all aspects of campus life and culture, and to help lead efforts to further it locally and globally.
UMass Lowell becomes the first New England campus to sign the charter. Created at an international conference in 2015, the charter is intended to give colleges and universities a framework to more thoroughly and systemically promote health and wellness.
UMass Chancellor Julie Chen cited the university’s ongoing efforts to encourage healthy living and general well-being, including its creation of an Office of Student Life & Well-being last year. But she said, “By signing the Okanagan Charter, we commit ourselves to viewing everything we do through a lens of promoting the health of our students, faculty, and staff — from individual practices to the policies we put in place across the university.”

Rebels game called off
COLUMBIANA — The Crestview football team is dealing with having a game canceled for the third straight year.
The Liberty at Crestview game scheduled for Friday was called off due to COVID-19 in the Leopards program.
Liberty is 0-4 and has been outscored a total of 157-34, which includes a season-opening 41-20 loss at Western Reserve.
Crestview coach Paul Cusick said the Rebels are trying to another opponent for Firday.
Rebels, Tigers in state poll
COLUMBUS — Two area volleyball teams are ranked in the first state poll released Monday by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association.
Crestview is 10th in Division III and Wellsville is 14th in Division IV.
The Rebels are off to a 6-0 start heading into today’s match at LaBrae.
The Tigers are 8-1 and will host United today.
Girard (7-1), coming off a three-game win at South Range last Tuesday, is ranked ninth in Division II.

SALINEVILLE — The Southern Local Athletic Hall of Fame induction breakfast will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the cafeteria. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Inductees include Bryant Nestor (class of 2007), Eric Baker (2011), Josh Melhorn (2011), Zack Puckett (2012) and Madilyn Dowling Wrask (2012). Inductees will be introduced 20 minutes before the start of Friday’s home game against Columbiana.

When liquid is detected in the lightning connector, your iPhone won’t charge via a cable connection. The situation is a bummer, especially if you need to power up your gadget as soon as possible. Thankfully, you’re already one step into solving the problem because you’ve found this guide. Here, you’ll see what to do about the alert and your iPhone or charging accessory.
What the Liquid Detection Alert Means
But first, you might be asking, “What does liquid detected in lightning connector mean?” You might also be wondering whether there is indeed liquid or not because your iPhone did not get wet recently. Let’s briefly answer these first.

The “liquid detected in lightning connector” alert shows up because moisture or liquid is in your Apple device’s lightning port. However, it could also mean the charging cord’s connector is wet.
Sometimes, the notification is only an error or mistake. The charging port or connector is not wet. There could be a foreign substance inside the port, an iPhone software bug, or Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) damage. All these lead to false or inaccurate detections. Port blockage and software issues are often easy to fix, but the same is not the case for the LCI.

If you didn’t know yet, the LCI is the contact on the lower- or middle-left side of the latest iPhones when they’re facing you (see iPhone 13 LCI sample image above). The said component turns from silver or white to red when wet. If it is red even if your iPhone didn’t get wet, it might already need a repair.
What to Do if Liquid Is Detected in Lightning Connector
Whether there is moisture or not, you can try these solutions for the issue. Before you proceed with these, though, don’t forget to press Dismiss on the pop-up alert. Disconnect the iPhone and charging accessories, too.
1. Dry Your iPhone

iPhones, starting from the iPhone 7 series, have IP67 or IP68 ratings for water resistance. The ratings don’t imply your iPhone can survive water damage beyond its expected limit. So, you still have to dry your iPhone once the liquid is detected in its lightning connector. Prolonged moisture can still lead to the rusting of pins inside the port.
The best and safest way to get water out of your iPhone charging port is by wiping it and leaving the gadget to dry. Use a clean cloth for this. Make sure nothing is blocking the said interface so the air can get through it. Drying may take 30 minutes to a day, depending on how worse the moisture accumulation is.
The process takes time, but it is better to be patient than to try quick hacks that aren’t safe. For example, leaving your iPhone in a rice grain-filled basin. The hack looks cool; however, you risk getting your iPhone ports clogged by particles.
2. Dry or Replace Your Charging Connector

As mentioned, moisture may only be inside your iPhone charging port. However, to be 100% sure, dry your charging cord at the same time. You can use another piece of clean cloth for it and let the air dry it too.
If drying seems tedious for you, there is no need to worry. Charging accessories are less expensive than iPhones, so you always have the option to change your charging cord. After all, it is risky to plug the cord in again when you aren’t sure it didn’t get water-damaged.
3. Look for and Remove Debris Too
What if the alert seems to be a mistake? What is the usual reason why your iPhone says there is liquid detected in the lightning connector even if there is none? It can be dirt, dust, or lint. Any of these may prevent charging or trigger a wrong notification.
Thus, peek into the iPhone’s charging port or cable’s connector to find any debris. Use compressed air for blowing the particles out. Do it with utmost care because the ports have sensitive components.
4. Get Available iOS Update

Another culprit that makes the iPhone deliver an inaccurate liquid detection alert is a software error. So, whenever there is an iOS update available, get it. An update may contain the easy fix you are waiting for, preventing false “liquid detected in lightning connector” alerts from popping up.
Here is how to switch to the latest iPhone OS:
1. Use your iPhone and go online.
2. Press your gadget’s Settings app.
3. Once on the settings interface, click General.
4. Swipe up the menu and press Software Update.

Use a wireless charger from Apple or a reputable brand to avoid more issues caused by fake accessories.
6. Ask Apple for Assistance
Talk to Apple Support if the alert for liquid detected in the lightning connector won’t disappear or if repairs are needed. You can do it via the Apple Support web page, so you can get expert insights or assistance fast. Alternatively, you can install the Apple Support app to get help.
Note that the one-year Apple warranty does not cover liquid damages. Therefore, prepare to shell out some money if repairs are needed.

European stocks were cautiously higher on Tuesday as global markets geared up for the latest reading of U.S. inflation, with the August data set to be released Tuesday.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 was up 0.2% in early trade, with food and beverage stocks adding 0.9% to lead gains while retail stocks slid 1.3%.
The inflation report is one of the last pieces of data on inflation the U.S. Federal Reserve will see ahead of its September meeting, where the central bank is expected to deliver its third consecutive 0.75 percentage point rate hike in an effort to combat high inflation.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell reiterated last week that he is “strongly committed” to bringing down inflation.
UBS plans to boost dividend; shares rise in pre-market
UBS Group plans to increase its dividend by 10% to $0.55 per share and expects its 2022 share repurchases to exceed $5 billion, the Swiss bank said on Tuesday.
UBS shares were indicated 1.2% higher in pre-market activity after what ZKB analyst Michael Klien called surprise news.

Stocks on the move: Future up 5%, Ocado down 12%
Shares of Future Plc gained 5.5% in early trade to lead the Stoxx 600 after the British media company projected that full-year adjusted operating profit would come in at the top end of market expectations.
At the bottom of the European blue chip index, British grocery technology company Ocado plunged more than 12% after warning of lower full-year sales as consumers weather soaring inflation.

Relief rally is likely bear market bounce, Wells Fargo says
The recent relief rally in stocks is likely another bear market bounce and investors should position for more choppiness ahead, according to Wells Fargo.
“Year-do-date, the outperformance of defensive, high shareholder payout, high-quality and low-valuation stocks reminds investors of the hallmark of a bear market,” global portfolio and investment strategist Chao Ma wrote in a Monday note.
Such recoveries happen in nearly every bear market and many are quickly reversed, leaving investors with regrets, they added.
“Although it is difficult to predict the bottom of a bear market, in the past, market bottoms were typically preconditioned by over-pessimistic market sentiment and a sign of definitive improvement in the underlying economic or market issue,” Ma said. “We believe we are not there yet in either regard.”
In the meantime, Ma recommends investors look for defensive stocks with low volatility, high dividends and share repurchase yields. He also says investors should go for high quality names with profitability and leading market share and affordable market price.

U.S. stock futures rise ahead of Tuesday CPI report
U.S. stock futures were higher Monday night as Wall Street looks ahead to the August consumer price index report set to be released Tuesday morning. The report will give investors an update on the inflation situation in the U.S. and is one of the last pieces of data the Federal Reserve will see ahead of its September meeting.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures gained 55 points, or 0.17%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 0.18% and 0.21%, respectively.

European markets: Here are the opening calls
European stocks are expected to open cautiously higher on Wednesday with the U.K.’s FTSE index seen 18 points higher at 7,560, Germany’s DAX 33 points higher at 13,944, France’s CAC 40 up 18 points at 6,616 and Italy’s FTSE MIB up 42 points at 23,029, according to data from IG.
Data releases include preliminary euro zone unemployment data for the second quarter as well as second quarter gross domestic product. The latest U.K. inflation numbers for July will be released as well as preliminary second quarter Dutch GDP.
Earnings come from Uniper, Carlsberg, Persimmon, Balfour Beatty, BAT and National Grid.
