The Algorand Foundation has revealed a $35 million USDC hole in its balance sheet as a result of exposure to embattled cryptocurrency lending firm Hodlnaut, which has paused withdraws since Aug. 8.
Algorand is an institutional-grade blockchain infrastructure with embedded smart contract functionality. The Algorand Foundation is a not-for-profit community organization focused on developing the Algorand ecosystem.
The announcement was made on the Algorand Foundation website on Sept. 9, with the Foundation stating that it’s “pursuing all legal remedies to maximize asset recovery.”
Hodlnaut’s financial situation first fell into deep waters when its $300 million investment into TerraUSD (UST) on the Anchor protocol fell dramatically following the de-pegging of UST and collapse of the LUNA token, resulting in the crypto lending firm pausing withdrawals and halting all trading activity, citing a liquidity crisis.
Weeks later, the firm was placed under interim judicial management, a form of creditor protection program, by the Singapore court.
Today we informed the community about our USDC exposure to Hodlnaut after they suspended withdrawals from their platform on August 8, 2022.
The full details can be found here: https://t.co/4pLkSiKW7b
— Algorand Foundation (@AlgoFoundation) September 9, 2022
The Algorand Foundation said the majority of the investment locked on the platform consisted of “locked, short term deposits,” but are now inaccessible due to Holdnaut’s suspension of withdrawals.
However, the Algorand Foundation notes that the $35 million represents less than 3% of the Foundation’s assets and they “do not anticipate [any arising] operational or liquidity issues,” and added that the “funds were a surplus to day-to-day requirements”:
“We invest a portion of our surplus treasury capital to generate yield for the purpose of Algorand ecosystem development, and these funds were invested for that purpose.”
Embattled crypto lender Hodlnaut is now subject to an Interim Judicial Management to resolve its liquidity issues.

Under Singaporean jurisdiction, corporate entities are placed under Interim Judicial Management for debt restructuring purposes in order to preserve and protect assets at risk prior to onset of legal proceedings.
The Algorand Foundation has played a key role, noting that on Aug. 29, the Singapore High Court appointed the Foundation’s nominees Angela Ee along with Aaron Loh of EY Corporate Advisors to act as the Interim Judicial Managers for Hodlnaut, aimed at preserving Hodlnaut’s asset until further court action begins.

Stock futures were flat on Monday morning as Wall Street looks ahead to key inflation data to be released this week.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were little changed. S&P 500 futures were down 0.06% and Nasdaq 100 futures lost 0.06%.
The moves came after a winning week for U.S. stocks, as all three major averages snapped a three-week losing streak. The Dow added 2.66% on the week, while the S&P 500 gained 3.65%. The Nasdaq Composite was 4.14% higher.
Stocks have been volatile ahead of the September meeting of the Federal Reserve, where the central bank is expected to deliver its third consecutive 0.75 percentage point rate hike in an effort to combat high inflation.
Wall Street investors had been looking for signs that the size of future rate hikes might be smaller as inflation cools off, Fed Chair Jerome Powell last week reiterated that he is “strongly committed” to bringing down inflation.
This week, investors are looking ahead to the August consumer price index report, scheduled to be released Tuesday. The report is one of the last pieces of data on inflation the Fed will see ahead of its September meeting. Retail sales and industrial production reports will be released Thursday.
“With the expectation for another 0.3% increase in the core rate for August, if the number is higher this will be a negative for stocks and bonds. If the report is less, it will be a catalyst for a market rally,” David Donabedian, chief investment officer of CIBC Private Wealth U.S. “Retail sales is also expected to be flat for the month of August, as it was for the prior month.”
U.S. to broaden curbs on chip and tool exports to China, Reuters reports
The U.S. Department of Commerce plans to publish new regulations related to restricting exports of chipmaking equipment to Chinese factories that produce advanced semiconductors, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The rules will be based on letters sent to KLA, Lam Research and Applied Materials earlier this year, when they were informed that government-issued licenses would be needed to sell such equipment to buyers that make chips with sub-14 nanometer processes.
The new regulations would likely include additional actions against China, sources told Reuters, adding they could be changed and published later than expected.

CNBC Pro: Goldman reveals the ‘sweet spot’ for its favorite oil stocks — and gives one 35% upside
Oil prices slip after volatile week
Oil prices were lower Sunday after energy markets whiplashed last week. Prices have been weighed down by rising interest rates and the potential curbed demand due to Covid lockdowns in China.
West Texas Intermediate fell 0.29% to $86.54 a barrel. Brent crude dipped 0.17% to $$92.68 a barrel.
Last week, oil prices rose slightly when Russia’s Vladimir Putin threatened to halt oil and gas exports to Europe if price caps are imposed. In addition, a small cut to OPEC+ oil output plans also supported prices.
Still, oil prices fell on the week.

UnityPoint Clinic Orthopedics will host a provider meet and greet from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to celebrate the arrival of the new Robotic Surgical Assistant, known as ROSA, which is used for hip and knee replacements.
ROSA is designed to help surgeons tailor the placement of hip or knee implants specifically for each patient.
UnityPoint Clinic Orthopedics — Fort Dodge surgeons Dr. Prashanth Anand and Dr. Elijah Miller — have both received specialized training to use the robotic technology.
“ROSA robotics aids surgeons in making high precision bone cuts in hip and knee replacement surgery,” said Anand. “We can achieve accurate limb alignment and soft tissue balance, which in turn improves long-term outcomes and patient satisfaction.”
ROSA collects data before and during surgery related to the patient’s unique anatomy. This data informs the surgeon what may affect the implant fit.
By using this data to make more informed decisions, the surgeon can plan for and carry out a personalized surgery based upon the patient’s individual needs.
“For everyone involved — surgeons, medical staff and, most importantly, patients — ROSA robotic technology has the potential to offer a number of key benefits and advantages,” said Leah Glasgo, CEO and president of UnityPoint Health — Fort Dodge. “We are proud to offer the newest medical technology and state of the art orthopedic care in a DNV Certified Hip and Knee Replacement Center. Our patients don’t have to travel for their care. They can receive excellence in care right here at home in Fort Dodge.”
Trinity Regional Medical Center was recognized as the first hospital in Iowa to receive the DNV Hip and Knee Replacement Program Certification, which validates the hospital’s excellence across the spectrum of hip and knee replacement care, from diagnosis to treatment, rehabilitation, education, and outcomes.
The certification is based on standards and guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
ROSA will be available for viewing at the meet and greet, along with the orthopedic care team and physical therapy team being present, so the community can learn more about the services they offer.
“I would encourage anyone that may need orthopedic care to stop by if they can,” said Miller. “It is a great opportunity to meet your potential care team and learn more about orthopedic services right here in Fort Dodge.”
Use the main entrance when arriving at the hospital and a team member will show you to the meet and greet.

Baking News: Le Macaron French Pastries Opens In Harvard Square | News – Harvard Crimson https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/baking-news-le-macaron-french-pastries-opens-in-harvard-square-news-harvard-crimson/
Harvard Square officially welcomed Le Macaron French Pastries in a grand opening event Saturday.
Located on Massachusetts Avenue, Le Macaron is a Black-owned business offering a selection of French macarons and pastries, as well as gelato and European-style coffee. The shop first opened its doors on Aug. 12 during Black Business Month, but held off its official grand opening celebration until nearly a month later.
“We have been just well received by the community, the students, the locals, the Harvard Square Business Association, and particularly the Cambridge Savings Bank,” co-owner Karine Ernest said.
Cambridge City Councilor E. Denise Simmons attended the grand opening. Simmons, the former mayor of Cambridge, spoke at a ribbon-cutting ceremony and congratulated the business on its opening, calling it “a sweet, delightful surprise”.
Ernest called the business her “lifelong dream” during the ceremony.
“Thank you to all those in Harvard Square. Thank you to my friends and family, my children for coming out here to support me,” Ernest said.
David I. Heller ’79, a close friend of the owners who enjoyed a bubblegum macaron, called the establishment a “delicious addition to the Square” and a “nice place on date night.”
Two of Le Macaron’s employees are current Harvard students.
Joseph W. Hernandez ’25, who works at the shop, praised the store’s management, saying he appreciates that “they are willing to hear from the people that are working there.” He called both owners, Karine and Emmanuel Ernest, “nothing but great.”
Le Macaron sits in what was previously an office space for the Cambridge Savings Bank. Karine Ernest called the bank an “incredible partner in this journey” of launching the pastry store.
She also previewed new flavors planned for the holiday season.
“For Christmas, we offer a gingerbread Christmas macaron, and then we also offer, in November, Pumpkin,” she said.
Noting that “it’s taken long” to set up Le Macaron in the Square, Karine Ernest advised other aspiring entrepreneurs to be persistent.
“Never forget your dream and pursue that dream, and don’t be discouraged,” she said. “The whole process may take longer than you anticipated, but if you stick by it, you’ll get there.”
“We are super excited to be in Harvard Square” Enest added. “We love the community, and we’re having fun.”

Rather Than Focusing On The Negative We Need A Strength-Based Way To Approach First Nations Childrens Health The Conversation
Rather Than Focusing On The Negative, We Need A Strength-Based Way To Approach First Nations Childrens’ Health – The Conversation https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/rather-than-focusing-on-the-negative-we-need-a-strength-based-way-to-approach-first-nations-childrens-health-the-conversation/
First Nations children represent the future of the world’s oldest continuing culture. Of the 66,000 Victorians who identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the 2021 Census, one-third were aged under 15 years.
First Nations children in Victoria are doing well in several health outcomes, our recent report has found. This report provides valuable insight into nutrition, physical activity and wellbeing among First Nations children living in regional Victoria.
Our survey found more than 300 First Nations primary school children were meeting guidelines for physical activity, healthy eating and screen time. Those who met these guidelines also had higher health-related quality of life.
However, our study is rare. Before our report, there was no information available about nutrition and physical activity among primary school-aged First Nations children in Victoria.
More evidence is needed about First Nations children’s health in Victoria. And it needs to be strengths-based, as opposed to highlighting deficits.
Read more: ‘I am Country, and Country is me!’ Indigenous ways of teaching could be beneficial for all children
A strengths-based approach
To examine First Nations childrens’ health, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal researchers from Deakin University partnered with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO). This organisation is the peak body representing Victoria’s Aboriginal community-controlled health sector.
VACCHO’s nutrition team works to improve food security and nutrition outcomes among Aboriginal communities across Victoria. Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations such as these provide culturally safe care, and support self-determination.
In our research, we found there is potential for health data to stigmatise First Nations peoples by focusing on negative outcomes instead of progress. To avoid this, when collating data, we focused on measuring positive health outcomes (such as healthy weight) rather than measuring “problems” (like obesity).
We were interested in identifying factors that contribute to positive wellbeing. This strengths-based approach acknowledges and celebrates the strength of First Nations children.
Read more: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population has increased, but the census lacks detail in other facets of Indigenous lives
Many First Nations children are meeting the health guidelines
Our findings indicate that many of the children surveyed were meeting nutrition and physical activity guidelines.
For most of these measures, there was no significant difference between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children in the survey.
Read more: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population has increased, but the census lacks detail in other facets of Indigenous lives
There’s still work to do
Our survey found Aboriginal children were more likely to report meeting vegetable consumption guidelines than their non-Aboriginal classmates. However, only 21% of Aboriginal children who participated reported eating the recommended number of vegetables each day.
While 53% of Aboriginal children had a healthy body weight, just under half did not. Non-Aboriginal children were more likely to have a healthy weight and on average had a lower body mass index than Aboriginal children.
This could be addressed through the development of a national First Nations food and nutrition plan. This plan would need to address issues such as food security and workforce capacity while directing funding to First Nations community-controlled nutrition programs.
Aboriginal childrens’ health data needs to steer away from negative focuses by balancing the findings with respective community’s progresses. Dan Peled/AAP Image

Connecting physical health with social and emotional wellbeing
Our survey also evaluated perceived physical, social, emotional and school-related wellbeing. This was measured using the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory.
We found non-Aboriginal children in our survey had significantly higher average health-related quality of life scores compared to Aboriginal children. This highlights this importance of promoting children’s mental health and social and emotional wellbeing alongside healthy eating and physical activity.
It’s important to recognise the connection between physical health (such as body weight) and health behaviours (diet, physical activity, screen time and sleep) with social and emotional wellbeing.
This view of health is defined by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation as “not just the physical wellbeing of an individual but the social, emotional and cultural wellbeing of the whole Community”. This is why culturally appropriate research undertaken in partnership with Aboriginal organisations is so important, and something we prioritised in our work.
It is our hope our findings can be used by health services to plan culturally appropriate health promotion programs for First Nations children in Victoria. Ideally governments can use these findings to better support Victorian Aboriginal community controlled health organisations to implement these programs.
Our strengths-based approach should be replicated in future surveys of First Nations childrens’ health. Importantly, Aboriginal health must be in Aboriginal hands.

Bucs’ Chris Godwin Available To Play Tonight At Dallas – Tampa Bay Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/bucs-chris-godwin-available-to-play-tonight-at-dallas-tampa-bay-times/
ARLINGTON, TEXAS — It has been only eight months since Chris Godwin underwent surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his right knee.
Bucs coach Todd Bowles said Friday that they consider the receiver a game-time decision.
Tonight, Godwin is not listed among the Bucs’ six inactive players for the season opener against the Cowboys, meaning he’ll be available.
Those not active tonight: quarterback Kyle Trask, third-year tailback Ke’Shawn Vaughn, former Pro Bowl tight end Kyle Rudolph, receiver Scotty Miller, reserve offensive lineman Fred Johnson and injured rookie cornerback Zyon McCollum.
Rookie tight ends Cade Otton and Ko Kieft, both expected to be special-teams contributors, got the nod over Rudolph, acquired via free agency shortly before the start of training camp.
Also expected to be available is receiver Russell Gage, who was listed as questionable with a hamstring injury on Friday but was seen running with a trainer on the AT&T Stadium turf hours prior to kickoff.
At minimum, expect Godwin’s snap counts to be limited. He tore his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments on Dec. 20 when he was hit by Saints safety P.J. Williams. He underwent surgery on Jan. 3.
“I think ultimately what it comes down to is just one, how I’m feeling; and then two, the discussions that I have with Coach Bowles and the training staff,” Godwin said Friday. “I think whenever the time comes for the game, I think everybody will know.”

Gold-Plated Nintendo Gifted To Queen Elizabeth Resurfaces Channelnews ChannelNews
Gold-Plated Nintendo Gifted To Queen Elizabeth Resurfaces – Channelnews – ChannelNews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/gold-plated-nintendo-gifted-to-queen-elizabeth-resurfaces-channelnews-channelnews/
A gold-placed Nintendo Wii console that was gifted to Queen Elizabeth II, after tabloid stories reported her fondness for gaming with her grandkids, is again in the news.
In 2008, a UK tabloid reported “the gadget-loving Queen has become hooked on Prince William’s new Nintendo Wii games console.”
Quoting the usual unverified palace source, Sunday People noted the Queen “showed all the signs of becoming a Nintendo addict” and had “hand-eye coordination as good as somebody half her age.”
The following year, now defunct gaming publisher THQ UK sent her a copy of its Big Family Games package, with a gold-plated Wii, because “we thought that Her Majesty the Queen wouldn’t want to play on any old console.”
The Wii was later returned to THQ, and ended up with a collector who had contacts at the company. It passed to another collector, who listed it on eBay last year, for a cool US$300,000. The seller noted the visible wearing of the gold-plating, adding, “My guess is that it was actually used at one point.”
Not surprisingly, it failed to sell, and eventually went for A$52,567 earlier this year, sold via Goldin Auctions as “the ultimate Wii collectible.”
The auction attracted 44 bids.
The above video explains the strange tale of the Queen’s console, should you wish to explore this rare piece of gaming history more.

Bitcoin Remains Steady Above $21K
Bitcoin held fast above its latest $21,000 threshold over the weekend as investors continued their hopeful wait for positive U.S. inflation data in the coming week.
The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization was recently trading at approximately $21,800, up about 1% and somewhat higher than where it began the weekend. BTC spiked more than 10% at one point on Friday amid market optimism that with prices starting to fall, the U.S. central bank would be able to ratchet back its current diet of robust interest rate increases and liquidity tightening next year.
While noting bitcoin’s encouraging rebound from $18,500 earlier in the week, Joe DiPasquale, CEO of crypto asset manager BitBull Capital also said that such resurgences have not been unusual for cryptos during down markets. “While bulls will welcome this bounce, it is important to note how continued bearish price action has intermittent relief rallies, especially as short position holders take profit,” he said.
Ether recently sank about 1% but was still trading well above $1,700 level it regained late Thursday. Investors in the second largest crypto in market value await the Merge, the Ethereum blockchain’s change from proof-of-work to a more energy efficient proof-of-work protocol that is supposed to be completed over the next nine days. Most other major cryptos from the CoinDesk top 20 by market cap were slightly in the red with UNI recently off more than 3% and popular meme coins DOGE and SHIB down over 2%.
The crypto price surge tracked stocks, which ended a three-week losing streak on Friday with the tech-focused Nasdaq closing up 2.1% and the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) rising 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively amid a lull in risk-off sentiment stemming from inflation optimism. The link between bitcoin (BTC) and equity prices, particularly tech stocks, is growing closer again.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Tuesday and economic observers widely expect another slight decline in inflation at least partly because of falling energy prices. The price of Brent crude oil, a widely watched measure of energy markets, is now hovering around $90 per barrel, down roughly 25% since topping $123 in early June. July’s 8.5% CPI fell slightly from the previous month, although it remains near a four-decade high.
In remarks Friday, St. Louis Fed President Jim Bullard said he had become more supportive of a third straight 75 basis-point rate hike and that investors should not not underestimate the possibility of continued high rates in 2023.
In crypto news, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin surprised attendees at the Kyiv Tech Summit on Friday to show support for war-torn Ukraine. And LUNA, the cryptocurrency of the Terra blockchain’s recreated version after dramatically imploding earlier this year, tripled in price within a few hours time Friday, trading close to its all-time high set in early June when the token was introduced. The token’s price skyrocketed to almost $7 from less than $2, according to data by cryptocurrency price tracker CoinGecko, although it was more recently trading under $6.
BitBull’s DiPasquale said he was “skeptical of a continued rally from here on in the absence of fundamental macroeconomic improvements,” and that the upcoming ETH Merge and meeting later this month by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to decide on the size of the interest rate increase “remain key events to watch.”
Thai Interest in Crypto Grows, but Regulation Lags
Forward, a Thailand-based decentralized finance (DeFi) project building a decentralized derivatives exchange, just closed a $5 million funding round.
And this isn’t any old round: Venture arms of two of the nation’s biggest banks participated.
Kasikornbank bank, and Bank of Ayudhya, both put in an undisclosed amount. Udomsak Rakwongwan, Forward’s co-founder, notes that this is the first time two regulated banks have invested directly in DeFi because they want to digitize and transform banking.
But while Thai banks need to operate in a heavily regulated environment – a product of the 1997 financial crisis – there just isn’t a clear regulatory environment for crypto.
Rakwongwan notes that Forward, despite being a Thai project, is incorporated in Singapore because of regulatory clarity there.
Siam Commercial Bank, another large bank in the country, has a blockchain venture fund and is “opening the gate for future regulation,” given its measured approach and positive relationship with regulators, Rakwongwan says. SCB recently dropped out of a deal to buy a majority of local exchange BitKub, on the advice of regulators.
Rakwongwan told CoinDesk that it has been in contact with the Thai SEC, with a meeting scheduled soon, and so far the reception his project has gotten has been positive.
But progress is slow. Meanwhile, the country is suffering from a brain drain. A low cost of living locally means that salary expectations are low, and Thai talent is competitive overseas. Web3’s remote-first work environment means collaboration happens without borders.
“I believe that there is hope for Thailand to become a center of innovation and technology. We have investors who are ready to support new talent,” said Chanon Charatsuttikul, another co-founder.
A $5 million round goes a long way in Thailand, Rakwongwan added. But there won’t be too many rounds like that invested in Thai companies until the regulation becomes clearer.

Did The U.S. Nuclear Energy Sector Just Have Its Best Month Ever? – Energy.gov https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/did-the-u-s-nuclear-energy-sector-just-have-its-best-month-ever-energy-gov/
The short answer is yes!
#Nuclear was actually trending on Twitter on August 3 following a series of positive developments within the nation’s nuclear energy sector.
From President Joe Biden signing the historic Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) into law to the certification of the first U.S. small modular reactor, nuclear is finally having a moment.
And this is just the beginning!
I’m extremely optimistic that we can build off these recent successes to help us create jobs, protect the environment, and enhance our energy security as we transition to a new clean energy economy.
Certifying the First Small Modular Reactor
On July 29, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced its intent to issue a final rule certifying NuScale Power’s small modular reactor (SMR).
The company’s 50 megawatt-electric power module will become the first SMR design approved by the NRC for use in the United States.
NuScale is currently seeking an uprate to enable each module to generate up to 77 megawatts. They plan to submit their application for NRC review later this year.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has invested more than $600 million in the development of NuScale’s SMR since 2014. We are currently working with Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems to demonstrate the NuScale technology at Idaho National Laboratory by 2029.
The company has also signed several agreements to explore the possibility of deploying SMR plants in 11 different countries, including Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Jordan.
Companies can begin referencing the SMR design in their combined license applications 30 days after the NRC publishes its final rule in the Federal Register.
Deploying SMRs in Tennessee
On August 2, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced an agreement with GE-Hitachi to support planning and preliminary licensing efforts for the potential deployment of a BWRX-300 SMR at the Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The new agreement will provide additional insights into the viability of deploying smaller reactors in the Tennessee valley and builds on a recent collaboration with Ontario Power Generation to develop SMRs in both the U.S. and Canada.
The Clinch River site currently holds the nation’s only early-site permit from the NRC for SMRs.
Fueling Plant Vogtle Unit 3
The next day, the NRC announced the authorization of Southern Nuclear to load nuclear fuel and begin operation at Vogtle Unit 3 in Georgia.
This is the first time ever the NRC authorized a reactor’s initial startup through their new “Part 52” licensing process and transitions the project out of the regulator’s construction reactor oversight program and into the operating reactor oversight process.
Unit 3 and Unit 4 are both expected to be operational in 2023 and will be the first U.S. reactors to use Westinghouse’s AP1000 technology.
Once the expansion project is complete, Plant Vogtle will be the largest single generator of clean power in the United States.
Fuel loading at Unit 3 is expected to begin this October.
X-energy and Dow bring the heat
On August 9, Dow agreed to deploy X-energy’s advanced reactor at one of its U.S. Gulf Coast sites by 2030.
Dow is the first U.S. manufacturer to announce its intention to use SMRs to provide clean process heat and power at one of its facilities.
X-energy is currently developing a Xe-100 high-temperature gas reactor that is expected to be operational by 2028 thanks to funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).
The company also recently completed a $40 million award with DOE to finalize the basic design of the Xe-100 nuclear power plant and further develop its TRISO-X particle fuel.
Historic Climate Legislation Signed
Finally, on August 16, history was made with President Joe Biden signing the Inflation Reduction Act into law.
IRA is the most significant piece of U.S. climate legislation and sends a strong signal to the nuclear energy industry that it will be counted on to help us achieve our net-zero ambitions.
IRA includes several tax credits and incentives to support the continued operation of the existing fleet (our nation’s largest source of clean energy) and the potential deployment of advanced reactors.
The legislation also includes $700 million for the Office of Nuclear Energy to support the development of a domestic supply chain for high-assay low-enriched uranium, and an extra $150 million for our office to improve the overall R&D infrastructure at our national labs.
Recent DOE analysis estimates the clean energy provisions from IRA and BIL alone could reduce carbon emissions by 1 million metric tons as we create thousands of clean energy jobs in the process.
Yes, momentum is definitely on nuclear energy’s side, but we can’t rest on our laurels to make this clean energy transition happen.
Expect many more great months ahead for the U.S. nuclear energy sector as DOE continues to support the implementation of this Administration’s priorities to support a clean and just energy transition to net-zero.
Let’s get to work!
Five IPhone 14 Pro Features That Were On Android First The Indian Express
Five IPhone 14 Pro Features That Were On Android First – The Indian Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/five-iphone-14-pro-features-that-were-on-android-first-the-indian-express/
The iPhone 14 Pro unveiled recently at Apple’s Far Out event in Cupertino, California, is touted as the company’s most jam-packed iPhone in terms of features. From a redesigned notch area called ‘Dynamic Island’, always-on display to a new 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, the iPhone 14 Pro feels like a tour-de-force in the high-end smartphone market. Apple, as usual, is the master of marketing and it is turning no stones unturned to hype the features present in its flagship as groundbreaking.
However, there are a number of features in the iPhone 14 Pro that many Android smartphones have had for years. However, Apple is doing something different with each feature that you will find in Google-powered Android phones.
Here are five such iPhone 14 Pro features that we first saw on Android:
Always-on display
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models will include an always-on display, providing information including time and widgets without having to wake the phone. Although Apple is making a big deal about the always-on-display on its newest flagships, this feature debuted on Android smartphones with Samsung’s Galaxy S7 in 2016. In fact, the first phone with Always-on-display was the Nokia 6303 in 2008.
A lot of popular Android smartphones from brands like Xiaomi and OnePlus already offer always-on-display on their devices. Not a new technology per se, Apple’s implementation of always-on-display is a bit different and perhaps a lot better than the competition. The magic trick is that the iPhone will continue to show the lock screen wallpaper, a little dimmed than before but never totally shuts off the screen. The feature is enabled by a new 1Hz refresh rate and several ‘power-efficient technologies’ to preserve battery life. Not that the always-on screen won’t eat up battery life, but the impact will be minimal.
Dynamic Island acts as a secondary display on the iPhone 14 Pro. (Image credit: Nandagopal Rajan/Indian Express)
Dynamic Island
While the all-new iPhone 14 Pro models boast multiple updates, the standout feature is Dynamic Island, a redesigned ‘movable’ notch at the top of the phone which will display information like the song you are listening to or when devices connect to your phone. Pill-shaped display cuts on smartphones aren’t new, but they have been rather stationary and rival brands from the Android camp did nothing to utilise the top of the screen to be more interactive with apps and display notifications.
Except for the LG V20, which had a secondary screen at top of the display that showed the time, date and notifications. The secondary display on the LG V20 was convenient, but it never felt it was part of the user interface. Dynamic Island is essentially a software-based solution to a hardware problem. It’s like saying “your smartphone still has a notch” but now that pill-shaped cutout resizes dynamically as you use the phone as if it is made to be part of the user interface. Surely, a clever way to utilise the notch.
Car Crash feature first debut on Google’s Pixel smartphone. (Image credit: Apple)
Crash detection
One of the major themes at Apple’s Far out event was how Apple devices can save lives in emergency situations. All four new iPhone 14 models, regardless of which screen size you prefer or the demographic they target, have built-in emergency satellite connectivity and the car crash detection feature.
But not many know that Google was the first to roll out the car crash feature on select Pixel smartphones a few years ago. Like in the case of a Pixel smartphone, the iPhone too uses motion sensors that can detect if the person has been in a car accident. It’s just that Google hasn’t done much to publicise Car Crash detection, which is available within the “safety” app on every Pixel device since the Pixel 3. Apple, on the other hand, marketed the iPhone as “essential”, by promoting the car crash feature.

Selfie autofocus
The real improvement on the iPhone 14 Pro isn’t just a 48-megapixel camera, but also that the front-facing selfie camera now has autofocus for the first time. Although the iPhone 14 getting a front-facing autofocus camera is a welcome move, Cupertino isn’t the first company to add selfie AF on phones.
It is a feature that has been there on Android smartphones for years now. Samsung’s smartphones have had selfie autofocus cameras for years. The latest Galaxy S22 has a selfie autofocus camera, for example. Google added front-facing selfie autofocus to the Pixel 3 XL in 2018 but has since dropped this feature on newer phones. Popular smartphones from OnePlus and Xiaomi also lack selfie autofocus cameras.
For video, the iPhone 14 Pro has a new Action Mode to help with stabilisation. (Image credit: Apple)
Action mode
The iPhone 14 Pro, including the standard iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, also now has a new Action mode, letting users capture smooth video that will automatically adjust to shakes, motion and vibrations without needing a gimbal. However, Apple isn’t the first company to add this feature to smartphones. Samsung has offered the Super Steady feature to shoot videos on its Galaxy smartphone for quite some time, and it’s only getting better.
Samsung’s technology uses optical and digital stabilisation to keep your videos looking smooth even when you’re recording video while walking or moving around. Chinese tech smartphone maker Vivo added a mechanical gimbal system for its primary 48MP rear camera on the X50 Pro in 2020. Recently, Asus introduced the gimbal camera system in the Zenfone 9 delivering six-axis stabilisation.

Activist Investor Dan Loeb Backs Off Call For Disney To Spin Off ESPN Hollywood Reporter
Activist Investor Dan Loeb Backs Off Call For Disney To Spin Off ESPN – Hollywood Reporter https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/activist-investor-dan-loeb-backs-off-call-for-disney-to-spin-off-espn-hollywood-reporter/
When activist investor Dan Loeb announced a new stake in The Walt Disney Co. last month, his list of suggested changes included a mammoth one: A sale or spinoff of ESPN.
Loeb, through his firm Third Point, told Disney CEO Bob Chapek in a letter that spinning off ESPN would give the sports media giant “greater flexibility to pursue business initiatives that may be more difficult as part of Disney, such as sports betting.”
Now, however, as Disney comes off of a successful D23 Expo in Anaheim, Loeb is backing off of that particular suggestion.
“We have a better understanding of ESPN’s potential as a standalone business and another vertical for Disney to reach a global audience to generate ad and subscriber revenues,” Loeb said in a pair of tweets Sunday. “We look forward to seeing [ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro] execute on the growth and innovation plans, generating considerable synergies as part of The Walt Disney company.”
It isn’t immediately clear if Loeb is also shifting his stance on his other suggestions, which included new board members, and an expedited purchase of Hulu so that it could be folded into Disney+.
In interviews tied to D23 over the weekend (you can read THR‘s Kim Masters interview here), Chapek said that the company has held talks with Comcast about an early Hulu buyout, though it did not sound as though a deal was imminent. He also argued that ESPN is best served within the larger Disney portfolio, and said that after Loeb’s letter about a hundred different potential buyers or partners reached out to Disney about ESPN.
“If you have a house that you’re gonna put up for sale and you have a hundred buyers, you probably got a pretty cool house,” he told Bloomberg.
Loeb, it appears, now agrees.

Location, location
GemLife Palmwoods is set in the idyllic and picturesque Sunshine Coast hinterland, surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Blackall Range.
Located just minutes from local shops and amenities, the resort is within easy reach of the area’s world-famous attractions, 30 minutes from Maroochydore and an hour and 20 minutes from Brisbane.
The natural surrounds of Palmwoods was a big selling point for the Byways, who enjoyed the rural location of their former home in the town of Mooloolah.
They believe that GemLife Palmwoods will provide the same small-town atmosphere and community-mindedness.
“When we were being shown around GemLife, we felt there was a great energy and sense of community. The residents were chatting and there was a really positive feel to it,” Jo says.
“We love the idea of being close to the big smoke, but not on its doorstep. We don’t mind the 20-minute drive to get to work, knowing that sometime in the near future, we’ll both retire anyway.”

GemLife Palmwoods is one of 10 GemLife resorts located in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. They operate under a land lease model, meaning residents own their houses and do not pay entry fees, exit fees or stamp duty.
At its heart is an architecturally-designed country club that will house a well-equipped gym, indoor magnesium pool with spa, sauna, wine room, ten-pin bowling, luxury cinema, yoga studio, creative arts studio and alfresco area.
Having worked in the fitness industry in the past, Terry and Jo, aged 62 and 57 respectively, are looking forward to using the gym, swimming pools and golf simulator.
“Quality of life is so important to us and so we really want to keep healthy. We know that where you live is such a big determinant of your health and happiness,” Terry says.
The secure neighbourhood and beautifully designed, low-maintenance homes at the resort mean that the Byways can also feel confident locking the door and pursuing their passion for travel, both now and into their retirement.
While the couple has travelled extensively overseas in the past, GemLife’s fleet of motorhomes has caught their eye.
The premium motorhomes are available at a discounted price to offer homeowners within the GemLife community the opportunity to explore Australia without the hassle of owning, storing and maintaining a caravan or campervan.
The Byways plan to take a road trip to Uluru and Alice Springs in coming years.
Closer to home, Jo anticipates her newly upgraded lifestyle at GemLife Palmwoods will enable her to find the time to nurture long-neglected interests.
“There’s even an art studio,” she says. “I sketched when I was younger and it might be nice to spend time relearning how do it. Our lives have revolved around work a bit lately but I’m looking forward to less work and more leisure.”
GemLife resorts provide high-quality homes and extensive premium facilities, including high-end country clubs, for over-50s looking to downsize. SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake’s football team kicked off its 100th season of high school competition with a 48-31 victory over Plattsburgh Saturday on home turf at Wilson Raymond Field.
On a hot, sunny day, senior running back Carter Hewitt had an outstanding performance to lead Saranac Lake as he piled up 262 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 28 carries. The third-year starter also picked up another 50 receiving yards on a pair of screen passes from quarterback Brady Roberts, who completed 7-of-11 pass attempts for 136 yards.
Saranac Lake found a great deal of success running the ball behind a big offensive line, finishing the game with 332 yards and seven touchdowns on 49 attempts. Senior running backs Jon Kratz and Logan Hathaway each reached the end once to account for the Red Storm’s other two touchdowns. On special teams, Landon Faubert connected on six of his seven point-after kicks.
Clinging to a 7-6 lead after the first quarter, the Red Storm pulled away by going on a 21-3 run that culminated with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Kratz on the opening drive of the second half. The teams then traded scores the rest of the way as Saranac Lake improved to 1-0 in the Champlain Valley while Plattsburgh dropped to 0-2 overall.
“I think we were really successful getting under center and just running the ball,” Red Storm head coach Eric Bennett said. “I think we had a lot of kinks to work out in our first couple series, and I’m glad that we could run the ball downhill when we needed to.”

The teams each scored a touchdown in the opening quarter. Saranac Lake mounted an 80-yard, eight play drive for the game’s first points, with Hewitt capping off the march with a 14-yard touchdown on a fourth-down handoff. A key play in the drive was a 44-yard completion from Roberts to Marcus Navarra that gave the Red Storm a first down at Plattsburgh’s 33.
Down by a touchdown, the Hornets came right back when Dominic DeAngelo returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards into the end zone. A bobbled snap on the conversion play left Plattsburgh trailing 7-6.
Saranac Lake put together two long scoring drives on both of its second quarter possessions, and Hewitt finished the marches off with one-yard touchdown runs. The first drive went 70 yards, and the second advance went 82 yards in 11 plays and gave the Red Storm a 21-6 edge with 30 seconds remaining in the opening half.
The Hornets took advantage of the time left on the clock. In three plays, they reached the Red Storm’s 30, and Owen Mulligan then drilled a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the half to head into intermission trailing 21-9.
“I was relatively happy with our special teams,” Plattsburgh head coach Mike Bordeau said. “That’s where the depth of our roster is beginning to take shape. We got a big kickoff return from Dominic DeAngelo, Owen came through with two field goals, it was good to see. Some of our younger kids are stepping up on special teams. It was the highest of the three phases, but we’d rather get touchdowns than field goals. Still, three points is better than none.”

Saranac Lake had the ball four times in the second half, and all four possessions went for touchdowns. That was fortunate for the hosts, because Plattsburgh also put points on the board after halftime.
The Red Storm started the third quarter with a 53-yard drive that saw Kratts reach the end zone on a two-yard run for a 28-9 lead. The Hornets also scored on their first possession of the third quarter when Mulligan connected for his second field goal, this time a 36-yarder, to cut their deficit to 28-12. Saranac Lake answered with another drive, with Hewitt scoring from the seven-yard line. Plattsburgh came right back, with quarterback Michael Phillips tossing a five-yard touchdown strike to Julian Brooks, making it a 34-18 contest with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Hewitt scored on a one-yard run and Hathaway banged in from the two to score the Red Storm’s touchdowns in the final quarter. Plattsburgh earned its fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 49-yard run by Trenton Griffiths and a seven-yard scamper by Phillips.
Griffiths, a senior, paced Plattsburgh’s ground game with 86 yards on eight carries, and Phillips chipped in 58 yards on 10 attempts. Griffiths also hauled in three passes for 51 yards. Phillips, a senior, had a solid afternoon throwing the ball, going 12-for-20 for 197 receiving yards.
Plattsburgh junior Max Filosca finished as the game’s top receiver with four catches and 82 yards.
After racking up 312 yards of offense on a busy afternoon, Hewitt said hot weather made things tough.
“This was hotter than any day in practice,” Hewitt said. “Overcoming the heat was the hardest part today, for both teams. I’m just happy the hard work we put in during the preseason is coming together. It’s fun being able to show what we can do as a team.
“Our defense was good and we ran the ball really well,” he added. “My linemen were making some beautiful gaps. We have some tanks there on the front line. You can’t ask for a better line.”
Despite the loss, Bordeau said he saw bright spots on the field.
“Saranac Lake moved the ball in a variety of ways and we didn’t have any answers,” Bordeau said. “We have to play better on the defensive side. We had some nice plays on offense, special teams were good, but if we don’t get the stops, then we’re not going to be able to outscore teams.
“We asked the kids to play hard, and they played hard. The effort was there,” Bordeau added.
In addition to completing a big pass to Navarra early in the game, Roberts also tossed a key 36-yard completion to Evan Willette that led to a Red Storm score in the second half. Bennett said he was pleased with the performance of his second-year starter.
“I thought Brady threw the ball really well, especially on crossing patterns, and it was nice to see Marcus and Willette come up with some big plays,” Bennett said. “Brady is throwing nice balls where his players can catch them. He’s come so far since last year, and that’s a testament to his work ethic.
“We have a lot to work on. Everybody says that after game one,” Bennett added. “The best thing today was a lot of kids got playing time. I was glad we got to see kids get on the field today.”
Saranac Lake next plays on the road Saturday at Saranac Central with the opening kickoff slated for 1:30 p.m. Plattsburgh next hosts Peru under the lights Friday starting at 7:30 p.m.

Norton Research Puts Focus On Metaverse Safety For Kiwi Gamers FutureFive New Zealand
Norton Research Puts Focus On Metaverse Safety For Kiwi Gamers – FutureFive New Zealand https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/norton-research-puts-focus-on-metaverse-safety-for-kiwi-gamers-futurefive-new-zealand/
Norton has released a research guide that aims to help Kiwi users stay safe when gaming in the metaverse. It details some key tips relating to online gaming safety.
Norton says that with many people seeing the metaverse as the future of gaming, there are plenty of undue risks that can occur, and gamers need to be aware of how they can get caught out.
The research highlights that gaming can come with significant security and privacy risks due to the millions of unique data points present in things like VR gaming.
It also points out that gaming in the metaverse can cause adverse mental health effects. For example, overuse of digital technology is often associated with adverse mental health symptoms, including depression and anxiety.
In line with these new trends, the research has detailed four cybersecurity tips for gaming in the metaverse.
Because gaming in the metaverse can involve using private information, Norton says it’s essential to take proper cybersecurity precautions. They say that by practising good cyber hygiene habits, users can enjoy their gaming experience while also staying safe.
Using strong passwords was found to be the best line of defence when it comes to data security. The research found that hackers may use credential stuffing or password spraying attacks to attempt to break into gaming accounts. To avoid this, Norton says to use complex passwords and make a habit of changing them every few months.
NFTs are also a big part of the metaverse. Whether it’s a collectible digital item or one to sell, Norton says it’s crucial to do the right research before engaging in any transaction. They say that considering blockchain technology is a new concept for most people, many hackers are looking to take advantage of this with NFT scams.
It was also interesting to note that research found over 40% of gamers surveyed share their personally identifiable information on gaming sites without thinking twice. This can be risky and may allow hackers to access critical online accounts. To avoid this, Norton says gamers must safeguard their personal information and only share it with trusted sites.
Using antivirus software was also said to be a crucial way to keep gamers safe.
To ensure devices have protection, Norton says users should consider using trusted security software. This additional layer of protection can keep devices free of viruses and malware. By knowing that their information is more secure, users can then spend their time focusing on the game rather than keeping themselves secure.
Skyler Gisondo & Nina Bloomgarden On The Resort Timelines Favourite Scenes And Creator Andy Siara The GATE
Skyler Gisondo & Nina Bloomgarden On The Resort, Timelines, Favourite Scenes, And Creator Andy Siara – The GATE https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/skyler-gisondo-nina-bloomgarden-on-the-resort-timelines-favourite-scenes-and-creator-andy-siara-the-gate/
The Resort is a riddle, wrapped in a question, hidden inside a secret room, and it’s exactly the kind of mystery that I love watching, especially with this cast.
William Jackson Harper and Cristin Milioti star as Noah and Emma, a couple having a few troubles that stumble into a mystery while they’re on vacation in the Mayan Riviera. That mystery draws the two in, inspiring them as they look for answers about two young, missing tourists, a powerful family, and one particular resort.
Skyler Gisondo and Nina Bloomgarden play Sam and Violet, the two young tourists who went missing, and we catch up with them 15 years in the past from when Noah and Emma start their search. The two characters bond incredibly quickly, and Bloomgarden had a theory about why.
“I think they’re both going through losses and it’s like they just happen to kind of find each other at the right time,” Bloomgarden said. “It’s like a fate situation, and I think they both don’t realize that they need each other or need someone at that moment. It’s just a perfect storm.”
Skyler Gisondo and Debby Ryan in The Resort
“They’re in this tropical paradise environment where everybody seems to be smiling and very happy and they they are not, and they’re kind of drawn towards each other,” Gisondo said.
For Bloomgarden, she described Violet as “so cool, and so fearless, and adventurous.”
“And I think what drew me to her was what she’s going through, dealing with the loss of her mom, which kind of mirrored my own life with my father. So I think that the empathy was there for her.”
For Gisondo, his push to do the series came from the talents behind the scenes.
“I was a fan of [creator] Andy [Siara]’s work and a big Ben Sinclair [producer] fan, and there were just really great people behind the project.”
“And Andy sent out a document, sort of an outline of the themes he hoped to explore and what the core of the show would be, and all of that seemed very exciting. There was a scene that I don’t think it was in the pilot ultimately, but it was just a moment in high school… [and] who you think you are, who you want to be, how the world is seeing you, all that kind of coming together.”
“I say high school. I think Andy changed it. I think we were 22, but still, at that time in your life, when you’re trying out new things and there was a scene I really liked that Andy wrote where I immediately saw that with Sam, that moment of, ‘Well, this is how I see myself, but this isn’t how [I want] the world to see me.’”
“So maybe I’m not that person,” he said. “And if I’m not that person, who do I want to be? And immediately I thought it seemed interesting to take on.”
Watch the full interview above or on YouTube. The Resort premieres on Sunday, September 11 at 9 PM (ET) on Showcase in Canada.

Cardano, Bitcoin, And Big Eyes – Three Crypto Tokens To Watch This Crypto Winter | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/cardano-bitcoin-and-big-eyes-three-crypto-tokens-to-watch-this-crypto-winter-bitcoinist-com-bitcoinist/
The crypto winter has left a lot of investors scrambling to get more out of their portfolios. With the huge price slashes, crypto tokens have experienced, it is normal for investors to feel fear and uncertainty. As the crypto winter continues to affect token prices, investors are advised not to miss this opportunity to buy the dip. They should embrace the price discounts on token prices and load up on good projects that are currently trading below their value. Before purchasing any crypto tokens, investors are encouraged to conduct thorough research into the projects to prevent the purchase of duds or poor projects. Fundamentals, use cases, and tokenomics are three areas investors should investigate before allocating capital to any project.
Three crypto tokens investors should be watching this crypto winter are Cardano (ADA), Bitcoin (BTC), and Big Eyes (BIG EYES). These three crypto projects have solid fundamentals, a strong user base, and well-structured tokenomics. Investors should take a closer look at these crypto projects as they are poised to rebound after the crypto winter. Here is a brief summary of each project.
Taking A Lead – Cardano (ADA)
Cardano (ADA) is a PoS (Proof of Stake) blockchain founded in 2017. Its goal is to build a decentralized project allowing innovators and creators to build and create positive change in the world. The blockchain has gained widespread use and relevance, including helping agricultural companies track and monitor their activities from the farm to the table. This and other utilities of Cardano have made it one of the top-ranking crypto projects ranking 8th.
The ADA token is the reward and governance token of Cardano. It allows its community to participate in the decision-making process by giving them the right to vote on issues affecting the blockchain. Furthermore, the ‘Alonzo’ hard fork of 2021 brought smart contract capabilities to the blockchain. This further attracted more builders and developers to the space. Cardano is poised to experience a regrowth in the next bull market. Keeping a close eye on this project will help you reap the rewards.
A Bigger Bite Of The Apple – Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin (BTC) is the first cryptocurrency project, and it was launched in 2009. The project was launched by an individual or individuals with the pseudonym- Satoshi Nakamoto. Satoshi Nakamoto released a white paper detailing how Bitcoin will be used as censorship-resistant money that would facilitate transactions on the internet. The project would be a peer-to-peer network facilitated by nodes run by validators. Furthermore, the network will be secured using a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism where hard math problems would have to be solved for new blocks to be created.
BTC is the utility token of the network and is the “money” spent on the network. Users receive their tokens in a cryptographic wallet address secured by seed phrases. Bitcoin is by far the most popular crypto project, and it has been here since the beginning.
The New Name in Town – Big Eyes (BIG EYES)
Big Eyes (BIG EYES) is a community token built to give users more flexibility in the DEFI and NFT ecosystem. The project aims to funnel liquidity into the DEFI and NFT ecosystems and increase access to users who hold the BIG EYES token. Big Eyes is a fully community-driven project and would be owned entirely by its community. At launch, 90% of the token would be available for users. The project is designed to give users more options and flexibility when they are accessing DEFI protocols. Finally, it would simplify DEFI and make it more accessible to users in the crypto space.
The Big Eyes project is poised to create a new paradigm in the NFT and DEFI spaces. You can become an early member of this project by participating in the ongoing pre-sale. Remember that you can earn various bonuses, and bonuses can stack. Purchase tokens today and become a pioneer. Start purchasing BIG EYES tokens today

U.S. Rallies Past Canada To Win Bronze Medal At AmeriCup – ESPN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-rallies-past-canada-to-win-bronze-medal-at-americup-espn/

Associated Press
RECIFE, Brazil — USA Basketball didn’t head home from AmeriCup empty-handed.
Gary Clark scored 18 points, and the U.S. rallied in the final minutes to top Canada 84-80 in the bronze-medal game on Sunday.
The Americans went on a 26-10 run over a 7-minute stretch of the final quarter, turning what was a 63-56 deficit into an 82-73 lead.
“I’m happy for our guys,” U.S. coach Alex Jensen said. “It was an honor to be a part of it.”
It was the ninth time in 11 appearances at AmeriCup — the championship of the FIBA Americas region — that the U.S. captured a medal. The Americans have won gold seven times, silver once and now have a bronze.
Canada was seeking a seventh medal in 19 appearances at the event.
Jodie Meeks — an NBA champion who spent 10 years in the league with seven teams — scored what may have been his final three points as a competitive player during that late run by the U.S. Meeks’ only points on the day came when he got fouled on a 3-point try and made all three of the free throws with 3:31 left, pulling the U.S. into a 71-71 tie.
Meeks is planning to retire and begin a coaching career. His teammates sent him out with a medal, and Clark’s layup with 1:43 left put the Americans on top for good.
“It’s definitely been an experience for our guys,” Clark said. “The weather’s nice. I think most guys were upset that they couldn’t get in the ocean because of sharks … but we’ve enjoyed our time here.”
Abu Kigab scored 18 points for Canada, while Kadre Gray and Jahvon Henry-Blair had 15 apiece.
Zylan Cheatham scored 16 for the U.S., while Craig Sword added 11 and Norris Cole led the team with eight assists.
Going home medalists, even though it wasn’t a higher-profile event like the Olympics or World Cup, wasn’t insignificant to the group of G League and internationally based players that the U.S. assembled for this trip.
“From Day 1, I felt it,” Jensen said. “You’re part of a special group.”
Later Sunday, Brazil was playing Argentina for the AmeriCup gold.
Met Police Urged To Stop Using Orwellian Technology My London
Met Police Urged To Stop Using ‘Orwellian’ Technology – My London https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/met-police-urged-to-stop-using-orwellian-technology-my-london/
Fourteen campaign groups have written an open letter to Sir Mark Rowley, the new Metropolitan Police Commissioner, calling on him to stop the use of facial recognition technology.
Organisations including Big Brother Watch, Liberty and Black Lives Matter UK contacted the new force leader on his first day in the job to demand an end to the “privacy-eroding, inaccurate and wasteful technology”. They claim 87 per cent of the alerts generated by the force’s systems misidentify people, including a 14-year-old black schoolboy in uniform, and a French exchange student who had only been in Britain a few days.
The Met uses a different way of calculating false alerts, using the proportion of all people estimated to have walked past cameras, and says the percentage is dramatically lower — typically between 0 and 0.08 per cent. The campaigners’ letter says: “During observations at deployments, Big Brother Watch has witnessed multiple false positive matches, which have led to innocent individuals being forced to prove their identity to police officers.
READ NEXT:
“If the use of this technology becomes more widespread, these incidents will become commonplace, resulting in further injustices and increased public mistrust of the Met.” The groups maintain that the technology used by the Met is less accurate for women, and say it is used more often in areas where there are higher numbers of people from ethnic minorities.
Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, said: “Public trust in the police has collapsed in the capital and is being further damaged by the Met’s repeated use of Orwellian facial recognition technology, which is both useless and highly invasive. These Minority Report style cameras have done absolutely nothing to reduce high rates of violent crime but risk putting our police on a par with those in surveillance states like China and Russia. They have no place in a democracy.
“Millions of Londoners’ faces have been scanned by facial recognition cameras without their consent, and without many parliamentarians’ awareness. If the new Commissioner is serious about fighting crime effectively while addressing discrimination in policing, he cannot endorse the use of a technology with an 87 per cent failure rate that pointlessly drains police resources, and is well known to have issues with racist and sexist misidentifications, many of which we’ve witnessed.
“It is critical that Sir Mark Rowley urgently stops police use of live facial recognition surveillance and takes a smarter approach towards technology in policing.” Martha Spurrier, director of Liberty, said: “We all have the right to go about our lives without being surveilled by the police. The Metropolitan Police’s use of live facial recognition is violating our rights and threatening our liberties.”
The force said its use of the technology focuses on tackling violent and serious crime. A spokeswoman said: “Live Facial Recognition is a technology that has been helping the Met to locate dangerous individuals and those who pose a serious risk to our communities.
“The Met has primarily focused the use of LFR on the most serious crimes; locating people wanted for violent offences, including knife and gun crime, or those with outstanding warrants who are proving hard to find.” She added that the technology supports violence reduction initiatives and has led to arrests for serious offences, including conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, assault on emergency service workers, possession with intent to supply Class A & B drugs, grievous bodily harm and escaping from prison.
However, she said that work was ongoing to test whether the algorithm used by the Met was less accurate for certain groups of people.

Columbus Family Honors Son Lost To Gun Violence One Year Ago – NBC4 WCMH-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/columbus-family-honors-son-lost-to-gun-violence-one-year-ago-nbc4-wcmh-tv/
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – This time of year is difficult for one Columbus family who mourns a loved one lost to gun violence one year ago.
The family of 27-year-old Marcus Payne is still looking for answers to his death.
Marcus’ mother Victoria Landrum is a member of the group Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children. On Sunday, the group held an event outside Champion Middle School, all about spreading positivity in the community.
At the event in east Columbus, bouncy houses for the children, food, and a raffle were all part of the fun.
Landrum said the event is the kind of thing her son would go to since he loved helping the community.
Marcus also loved to travel, which is why his family is raffling off a three-day, two-night vacation in his honor.
Landrum said the smile she saw on the winner’s face reminded her of the happiness she would see in her son when he went on a trip.
“I was excited because I could just see how excited she was to think, ‘Oh, I’m going on vacation,’” she said of the winner. “The excitement my son has on his face when he goes on vacation, the excitement of enjoying yourself, relaxing, and he can never do that.”
The shooting happened on Aug. 30, 2021, at approximately 1 a.m. near Neil and Buttles avenues in Victorian Village. Columbus police said the brothers had confronted someone they suspected tried to steal their car. As Marcus Payne and his brother drove away, someone fired into the car, hitting Payne in the head.
On Sept. 11, the 27-year-old, one of nine siblings, died.
One year after Marcus’ death, Columbus police are still searching for suspects. Anyone with any information is asked to contact police at 614-645-4730.

More than 55 million people worldwide were living with dementia in 2020, and Alzheimer’s Disease International estimates that a person develops dementia every 3 seconds. As more people in the world live longer, the population of seniors is growing larger. This makes the early diagnosis and interventions for dementia more important since dementia mainly affects older people.
Researchers are looking into various factors that contribute to declines in brain health. A 2022 study in the European Heart Journal looked at the impact of vascular risk factors such as smoking, blood pressure, BMI, and cholesterol levels since they can affect the flow of blood into the brain. The researchers conducted MRI scans of people between the ages of 44 and 79 and asked how often they smoked and whether they were diagnosed with hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. They also measured pulse pressure, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio.
The study found that smoking, hypertension, and diabetes were the biggest factors that contributed to various declines in the brain. A higher BMI and waist-to-hip ratio also contributed to some brain decline.
Therefore, to keep your brain healthy through the years, one way is to quit smoking. According to a 2011 study in NeuroImage, people who smoked had lost significantly more gray matter in the brain after 2 years than people who didn’t smoke. Losing gray matter in the brain is connected to cognitive decline.

The National Institutes of Health defines high blood pressure to be 130 or greater for systolic pressure or 80 or higher for diastolic pressure. If your blood pressure is elevated (a systolic between 120 and 129) or higher, incorporating a walking program can reduce your blood pressure. A 2018 study in PeerJ recruited people with systolic pressures above 120 to begin walking for 15 to 30 minutes a day. The participants built up the number of weekly minutes and walked for 2 months until they reached 300 minutes of total walking per week. After 6 months, the participants significantly reduced their systolic blood pressure. Those whose blood pressure was highest saw the biggest drops in blood pressure, and the participants also saw reductions in weight, BMI, and waist circumference.
Another study looked at the direct effects of walking on brain health. A 2013 study in Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics found that Alzheimer’s patients who walked more than 2 hours per week had improved their scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination after a year.

To keep your brain healthy, you can cut your risk of diabetes by adopting the Mediterranean Diet. The Mediterranean Diet emphasizes whole grains, vegetables, and legumes and includes moderate amounts of seafood, dairy, and poultry, according to the Mayo Clinic. A 2020 study in Nutrition & Diabetes followed the health habits of almost 12,000 people aged 45 to 65 for 30 years. The researchers found that eating foods that adhered to the Mediterranean Diet were less likely to develop diabetes. Specifically, people who ate more nuts and legumes, drank alcohol in moderation, and opted for less processed meat and red meat had lower incidences of diabetes.
The Mediterranean Diet has also been linked more directly to cognitive health. In a 2020 study in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, Parkinson’s disease patients who adopted the Mediterranean Diet for 10 weeks showed improved executive function, language, attention, memory, and concentration.
A healthy lifestyle overall makes you less likely to develop dementia. A 2022 study in Nutrients found that adhering to the Mediterranean Diet, getting good sleep, staying physically active, and engaging in social activities make you more resistant to cognitive decline.

The next race up on the NASCAR Cup Series playoff docket is Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. Given the way the postseason opener turned out, it’s a contest that holds extra weight.
Erik Jones’ surprise victory in last week’s Southern 500 at Darlington meant that none of the playoff’s 16 participants secured a spot in the Round of 12.
The results left the bottom of the standings tight. Only 13 points separate 16th-place driver Kevin Harvick from 12th-place driver Daniel Suarez. Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch all were forced out last week with mechanical problems.
With only two races left before the playoff field is cut to 12, Kansas will play a pivotal role in determining who lifts the glimmering Cup Series hardware at the start of November.

NASCAR at Kansas live updates, results, highlights
(All times Eastern)
6:26 p.m.: Surprisingly enough, Logano lets Hamlin pass him. Seems Logano is playing the long game and hoping Hamlin will return the favor later in the postseason.
6:24 p.m.: Denny Hamlin takes second place! However, one thing to consider: a second- or third-place finish puts Bell into a great position to make it to the next round of the playoffs.
6:22 p.m.: With 19 laps to go, Wallace still holds a 1.75 second edge over Bell.
6:18 p.m.: Wallace trying to fend Logano off with 26 laps left. Logano is currently a lap behind but he’s trying to pass Wallace to knock that one-lap deficit down.
However, Wallace is holding firm. Good lap to put a little distance between him and second-place Bell.
6:16 p.m.: Bell has closed the gap to a little less than two seconds. It seems that the traffic in front of Wallace is making things a little difficult.
6:09 p.m.: Interesting situation for Daniel Suarez. Suarez kept his No. 99 car on the track for far longer than other drivers, putting him into first place. However, when he finally made his way to pit road, it took far longer for him to get his tire changed.
Suarez was in 12th place before all the shuffling took place. We’ll see if his efforts on the track prove beneficial for his final ranking in today’s race.
6:06 p.m.: Wallace has about a five second edge over Bell, meaning he got the better jump out of the pits. Wallace in very good position to nab his first victory of the 2022 season.
6:05 p.m.: Wallace and Bell both pull into pit road on Lap 217. Both got a good jump off the pit, but it looks like Wallace might have the edge.
6:02 p.m.: Wallace has a 2.5 second edge over Bell. However, Bell’s car is flying — he just finished his last lap in .1 seconds. Wallace will have to make a decision on when to hit pit road next. Remember, Wallace is going for an owner’s championship for 23XI Racing.
5:57 p.m.: Bubba takes the lead! He’s got a second edge over Bowman. 65 laps to go.
5:55 p.m.: Wallace has pulled it to within two-one hundredths of a second of Bowman. He’s about a car length behind Bowman but it looks like it’s only a matter of time before the 23XI Racing driver to pull ahead.
5:47 p.m.: Wallace is up to second! However, Bowman still has a sizable edge over the rest of the field — he’s a second and a half in front of Wallace. The 29-year old could clinch his spot in the next round of the playoffs with a victory today.
5:43 p.m.: Wallace is going to have some difficulties breaking through the Hendrick duo of Larson and Byron. Tough spot for Bubba, but lots of race left for him to make a move.
Bowman has a solid lead through the first few laps of Stage 3.
5:41 p.m.: Stage 3 starts and it’s Bowman, Wallace and Byron setting the pace. 93 laps left!
5:32 p.m.: Bowman takes Stage 2!
5:25 p.m.: Bowman, Byron and Bell all within a second of one another for first place. No. 45 Bubba Wallace isn’t too far away, either.
12 laps to go in Stage 2.
5:12 p.m.: Kyle Busch spins along the infield! Tries to make a turn and swerves into the car. That’s another hairy exit for Busch, who had a similarly difficult weekend at Darlington.
5:06 p.m.: Some tight driving between Kyle Larson, Austin Cindric and Bell. Looks like Larson got a piece of Bell’s car. However, nothing too severe came from it.
Racers really trying to bunker down with less than 40 laps left in Stage 2.
5:04 p.m.: The latest race restart sees Bowman return to the front of the pack. Logano and Byron both within a second of the Hendrick Motorsport driver.
4:54 p.m.: Another crash, this one almost immediately after the race restart. Looks like Erik Jones tried looking for a space up the front. However, he clipped Harrison Burton, who then bumped into Corey Lajoie. Aric Almirola got caught up in the action as well.
LaJoie is finished for the day, his No. 7 car has major damage on its side. Looks like that’s also the case for Burton as well.
— NASCAR (@NASCAR) September 11, 2022
4:47 p.m.: Caution flag waved for Stenhouse. Looks like it’s the right rear tire. Might just be a flat wheel, which would allow Stenhouse to get back on the track fairly quickly.
4:44 p.m.: Through 26 laps in Stage 2, the leader is Martin Truex Jr. Truex just missed out on playoff qualification and has been gunning to play spoiler for playoff racers. He was in prime position to capture the checkered flag at Darlington, but mechanical issues halted his progress in Stage 3.
Stenhouse is less than half a second behind Truex.
4:37 p.m.: And that’s it for Gibbs, who is done for the day.
Gibbs done for the day

4:35 p.m.: Another caution flag waved after Ty Gibbs after he scrapes the side of his car on the wall. Seems he’s having some tire issues.
4:30 p.m.: When asked about his chances at winning at Bristol to advance to the next round of the playoffs, here’s what Harvick had to say:

4:18 p.m.: After the latest race restart, it’s Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney competing for that pole. There’s only four laps to go and Bell holds the slight lead at the moment. However, Blaney is working on the outside hoping to push beyond his peer.
Bowman, who held the lead for much of the day, is all the way back in 14th place.
4:15 p.m.: That’s Reddick done for the day as well! The second playoff driver that has been knocked out of today’s race! Reddick is now just a point over the playoff cut line. And that’s with the rest of the race yet to be completed.
Dangerous place to be in.
4:08 p.m.: Reddick takes a spill! His right rear went flat while in the lead, prompting another caution flag. Shocking turn of events for the man who came into today with the pole.
Per the broadcast, there’s still something in the rear that feels broken. That’s a serious problem.
3:57 p.m.: Per Bob Pockrass, Harvick is finished for the day. Huge crash that could have major playoff implications going forward.
Harvick done for the day.

3:54 p.m.: Reddick finds success on the latest race restart, nabbing pole position from Bowman. Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney holding tight in second, but can’t seem to get past Reddick on the outside.
3:46 p.m.: And another caution flag is waved! Kevin Harvick appears to clip into Ross Chastain and Bubba Wallace before smashing into the wall. Real concern for Harvick, who couldn’t finish last week’s race after his car burst into flames. His playoff chances might just be dwindling before our very eyes.

3:44 p.m.: After the race restart, Reddick and Bowman are going back and forth for pole position. A real battle between the two drivers.
3:36 p.m.: The first caution flag is waved on Lap 26. However, this is a competition caution flag.
Bowman leads, followed by Reddick and Logano.
3:34 p.m.: Bowman has held firm at the top of the pack for 21 laps. That’s the most he’s held in a race this year.
3:26 p.m.: Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch have already fell back in the field a bit. Both had car issues last week. With the playoff spots dwindling, that’s a real concern.
3:24 p.m.: Alex Bowman takes the lead! He took his shot and outpaced Tyler Reddick and Joey Logano for pole position. Five laps in and we already look headed for a frantic race.
3:22 p.m.: And we are off!

Web3 Games And Metaverse Projects Raised $748 Million In August (Report) CryptoPotato
Web3 Games And Metaverse Projects Raised $748 Million In August (Report) – CryptoPotato https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/web3-games-and-metaverse-projects-raised-748-million-in-august-report-cryptopotato/
According to a report by the data acquisition and analysis company DappRadar, Web3-based games and Metaverse projects raised $748 million since August 1, 2022. Last month, on average, 847,000 daily Unique Active Wallets (UAW) interacted with blockchain games, an 11% decline compared to July.
One of the most popular games in the field – Axie Infinity – surpassed $4 billion in all-time NFT sales, while approximately 36,000 additional people joined as daily players in the past three months.
‘Blockchain Gaming has not yet Lost its Mystery’
Despite the ongoing market downturn, blockchain-based games keep attracting interest. DappRadar revealed that companies in that field and Metaverse projects had distributed around $750 million since the beginning of August. That is a 135% increase compared to July but still a 16% decrease from June’s figures.
One of the biggest investments ($200 million) came from Gabriel Leydon – Founder of Machine Zone. His mobile gaming studio is behind Game of War and Mobile Strike.
The Singaporean investment company – Temasek – led the latest funding round worth $100 million for Animoca Brands with the purpose to further increasing its exposure in the sector.
The Australian NFT scaling platform – Immutable, which in June raised $500 million to support developers that build blockchain-based games and NFT startups, believes Web3 services will become a leading feature in the future digital asset industry.
For its part, another popular company in the field – Axie Infinity – exceeded $4 billion in all-time NFT sales, while Xterio secured a $40 million fundraiser, which will be invested in mobile Web3 games.
Total investments in blockchain games in 2021 equaled $4 billion. This number has already been surpassed in 2022 as investments currently amount to about $7 billion. If that pace remains, expectations are that the number will soar to $10.2 billion by the end of 2022.
“The amount of investments demonstrates that despite the challenging and uncertain conditions in the digital asset markets, major investment entities remain bullish on the GameFi industry,” DappRadar stated.
Subsequently, the analysis company argued that blockchain gaming is still a young sector with much potential. The area is “constantly developing and inventing,” and those who are part of it see those advancements.
“Blockchain gaming, the newest addition to a still young sector, has not yet lost its mystery. Many are still unaware of its significance, and the ever-changing gaming ecosystem provides little assistance,” the report concluded.
DappRadar’s Previous Study
At the end of July this year, the firm determined that blockchain games and Metaverse projects seem to be coping with the crypto winter much better than other industry segments. DappRadar’s CEO – Skirmantas Januskas – commented at the time:
“We think that blockchain gaming is going to be key in the next two or three years and is going to bring at least 100 million new users into crypto for one simple reason, they connect NFTs and DeFi. With all three combined, blockchain gaming, NFTs and DeFi, you will see something genuinely new and exciting.”
The report informed that unique active wallets (UAWs) have declined by 7% in Q2 compared to the previous quarter. This indicated that individuals continued to interact with blockchain decentralized applications at almost the same rate as before the Terra collapse.
