MyVoice: Views Of Our Readers 12th September 2022 – The Hans India https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/myvoice-views-of-our-readers-12th-september-2022-the-hans-india/ Rebel Star showed mettle in films, politics The demise of tall actor of Tollywood Uppalapati Venkata Krishnam Raju, who portrayed the roles of hero, villian and character artist from 1966 with Chilaka-Gorinka as first film to 2022 Radhe Shyam as last one totalling 188 movies and a recipient of two Nandi awards, has left a void in Tollywood. He was born in a family of kings in Mogalturu in West Godavari district very nearer to my native place. I visited on a few occasions his very strongly built mud fort in which his ancestor Rajas’ life size oil painted photos can still be seen. Two times MP and a minister in Vajpayee government, he was always cool, calm gentleman and rendered all kinds of assistance to those suffered during natural calamities in coastal Andhra. N Ramalakshmi, Secunderabad II Because of his rough roles, Krishnam Raju is called as Rebel Star. The actor played different characters with aplomb. The tall muscular, rugged personality who donned a variety of both positive and negative roles with ease during a career spanning five decades will always be remembered by his fans and cinegoers for his unforgettable performances. The void cannot be filled. Zakir hussain, Kazipet. III Krishnam Raju who is known as rebal star in the hearts of moviegoers , started his film career as villain and had an opportunity of screen share with the stalwarts like NTR, ANR ,Sobhanbabu, Krishna and others. He got a rare opportunity of acting with present set of heroes as character actor. By entering politics he won from Kakinada and Narasapuram parliamentary constituencies and served as Union Minister in late Vajpayee’s cabinet. He was the first person to become Union Minister from Tollywood. He was a man who became non-controversial both in film field as well as politics throughout his career. Pratapa Reddy Yaramala, Tiruvuru, AP IV Tollywood lost a good veteran actor who did some great Telugu films. The legendary actor also did a good job in politics by serving as union cabinet minister during Vajpayee’s regime. It is nice to see PM modi expressing his condolence towards the death of Krishnan Raju. It is also nice to see PM and many actors and prominent people expressing their grief over his demise. V Bhagirath Kumar, Hyderabad Seat belts ok, but what about roads? It is not clear when the rules were made for mandatory seat belts in Indian cars, why seat belts were not made compulsory for all the seats. Why do the automobile makers who always come out with fancy gadgets can’t add seat belt alarms for all seats? A lot has been written and spoken about the unsafe Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway as well as other national highways. While accelerating construction of highways, why importance is not given to safety and quality? The caving in the portion of Bundelkhand express highway soon after a few weeks of inauguration by PM Modi is one such and there are many other examples. While fast construction for comparison with the previous regime is fine, it can’t be at the cost of quality and safety. N Nagarajan, Hyderabad Beginning of the end for BJP rule It is good news to the lovers of secular democracy that KCR, an elderly statesman of Telangana, is all set to launch a national party. On top of it, his determined efforts to unite the various opposition parties in India are a good sign for the strengthening of democracy in India. Another game-changing political development is the Bharat Jodo yatra, an unprecedented mass contact programme undertaken by INC stalwart and PM candidate Rahul Gandhi. All these are positively indicating towards a grand alliance of opposition parties from south, north, east and west gearing up to face the BJP in the electoral battles in 2023-24. P H Hema Sagar, Secunderabad Hullabaloo over a T-shirt The BJP is less than enamoured of the Congress’ Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra; in fact; it seems to be miffed at its success; its desperation shows through. It is getting worked up about it drawing huge support from the people and turning the tide. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other BJP leaders have taken a swipe at ‘Rahul Baba’ for wearing a Burberry T-shirt costing over Rs 41,000 during the foot march to unite India, forgetting how PM Modi adorned himself with a monogrammed suit with his full name emblazoned on it in capital letters costing close to Rs 10 lakh. Even Modi’s pair of sunglasses are said to be priced at over Rs 1 lakh. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones! G David Milton, Maruthancode, TN

A Review Of Crypto Regulations In The UK Amid Economic Downturn BSC NEWS
A Review Of Crypto Regulations In The UK Amid Economic Downturn – BSC NEWS https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/a-review-of-crypto-regulations-in-the-uk-amid-economic-downturn-bsc-news/ Amidst critical social, economic, and political changes in the United Kingdom, crypto regulations are set to be a big focus. Crypto Regulations With the FCA Several major developments have come out of the United Kingdom lately, including Liz Truss becoming the 56th Prime Minister of the UK and the demise of Queen Elizabeth II. While there is a lot going on in the social and political realm in the UK, many eyes will be on how the crypto regulations proceed in the country. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is the AML/KYC regulator of UK crypto businesses. The FCA stated in a press release published in October 2019 that businesses dealing with cryptocurrencies must comply with the same anti-money laundering requirements as banks and financial services. “Our supervisory approach to crypto asset businesses will be in line with our approach to other businesses under the money laundering rules (MLRs),” FCA states in the press release update of May 2022. Source The UK crypto regulations currently match EU requirements specified in the 5AMLD and 6AMLD directives. FCA had previously set a deadline of March 31, 2022, for crypto firms to register themselves and become compliant with money laundering regulations. However, FCA later extended the deadline for a few selected firms. Making the UK a Global Crypto Hub The UK government stated in a press release on April 4 that they are taking steps towards making the UK a global crypto hub. Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak remarked: “It’s my ambition to make the UK a global hub for crypto asset technology, and the measures we’ve outlined today will help to ensure firms can invest, innovate and scale up in this country.” The UK government will explore ways to make the UK tax system more competitive to facilitate further development of the crypto asset market. The tax system will examine DeFi loans, in which crypto assets are lent out for a return. Source In addition, two UK crypto bills will be proposed, looking to reduce “red-tape”, maintain financial standards, and recover illicit crypto assets: The Financial Services and Markets Bill The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Bill The first bill seeks to harness financial services opportunities from innovative technologies and facilitate the safe adoption of cryptocurrencies. By contrast, the latter simplifies the process of seizing and recovering crypto assets, which are the primary means through which ransomware attackers operate. Another new bill to regulate stablecoins is scheduled to be debated in Parliament for the first time in September. In the midst of a complex legislative process, crypto advocates await regulators’ interpretations and enforcement of the legislation. Impact of the New PM Liz Truss became the 56th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland on Sept. 5. Truss will look to solve the U.K.’s current economic woes, especially the high cost of living, after replacing Boris Johnson. During her tenure as chief secretary to the Treasury in 2018, Truss expressed optimism about cryptocurrencies: Since then, Truss hasn’t made any specific recommendations or comments regarding cryptocurrencies or blockchains. There will be a lot riding on Kwasi Kwarteng, the new Chancellor of the Exchequer, regarding crypto regulations in the U.K. However, in a 2021 report from Kwarteng’s previous department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy, blockchain solutions were identified as key to transforming the British economy. US Open 2022 Men’s Final Live Updates: Carlos Alcaraz To Battle Casper Ruud For Title, World No. 1 Ranking – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/us-open-2022-mens-final-live-updates-carlos-alcaraz-to-battle-casper-ruud-for-title-world-no-1-ranking-cbs-sports/ The 2022 US Open men’s final is finally here, and the stakes are even larger than usual for a Grand Slam event. Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz will play Norwegian Casper Ruud for the title Sunday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with the winner set to earn their first career major and the world No. 1 ranking.  Alcaraz is coming off a thrilling five-set win over Frances Tiafoe, the American who captured the hearts of fans nationwide after serving Rafael Nadal his first Grand Slam loss in over a year in the fourth round. It was Alcaraz’s third straight five-set match, and though he showed virtually no fatigue in the win, his stamina is something to watch considering he’s spent over 13 hours on the court over that stretch — including a five-hour, 15-minute marathon against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals.  Ruud punched his ticket to the final with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over Karen Khachanov. The 23-year-old Ruud has won three titles this year and reached the 2022 French Open final, but he has yet to win a major. Alcaraz stands in his way, however, and has posed issues for Ruud in the past. The 19-year-old Alcaraz has won both of the players’ two career meetings in straight sets, including a match earlier this year in Miami.  Regardless of who wins, an exciting trend will continue. A first-time major winner will earn the US Open men’s singles title for a third straight year, as Dominic Thiem and current world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev came out victorious in 2020 and 2021, respectively.  The match is set for 4 p.m. ET on ESPN and streaming on fuboTV (try for free). Pinned Casper Ruud has been victorious in four of the last five games here in the third set. The Norwegian holds a four games to three lead in the midst of a stellar third set. Could be a pivotal set in this match.  See New Posts Pinned Pinned After Carlos Alcaraz took the first two games of the third set, Casper Ruud has rebounded to win three consecutive games. Ruud currently leads 3-2 and has won seven of the last nine games. Impressive stretch for the 23-year old. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Carlos Alcaraz takes the first two games, but Casper Ruud rallies back to win the third game to narrow the gap to 2-1 early in the third set. Ruud has won 67 points so far while Alcaraz has won 66. These two are thriving so far in this Grand Slam final. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Huge statement to open the third set by Carlos Alcaraz. He breaks Casper Ruud’s streak of four consecutive games won with a win in the first game. Pinned Pinned Pinned Casper Ruud cruises to a 6-2 win to take the second set of the 2022 US Open. That was a much-needed stretch for Ruud after Carlos Alcaraz took the opening set. Ruud won a pair of break points in the second set to help his efforts. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Casper Ruud is in the driver’s seat to take the second set. Ruud currently has a 5 games to two lead after earning the break points in the seventh game. Pinned Pinned Tough loss in the sixth game for Carlos Alcaraz. He nearly returned an incredible volley, but it just landed out of bounds. Casper Ruud takes the sixth game and leads 4-2 in the second set. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned After Casper Ruud won the opening game of the second set, Carlos Alcaraz and Ruud alternated winning games in which both registered all four points in their respective wins. Ruud holds a two games to one advantage through three games in the second set. Tremendous competition at Arthur Ashe Stadium right now. Pinned Pinned Carlos Alcaraz takes the opening set of the US Open 6-4 over Casper Ruud. After dropping the first game of the set, the 19-year old held at least a one-game advantage throughout the entire set. Alcaraz also registered three aces during the opening set. Pinned See More

Loud Thunder From Small Oregon Storm Shakes Portland – The Associated Press – En Español https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/loud-thunder-from-small-oregon-storm-shakes-portland-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A single strike of lightning from a small Oregon storm and the ensuing thunder shook the city of Portland on Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service said. The flash and bang was an unexpected “one-hit wonder” that came from a small storm cell, meteorologist Tyler Kranz said. No more lightning was expected. The boom at 2:13 p.m. led to social media posts questioning whether it was thunder or possibly a meteorite. A lightning detector registered a single strike of lightning at the same time the thunder was reported, Kranz said. It was a positive charged cloud-to-ground flash with strong current, causing the unexpected boom.

Editorial Roundup: Texas – U.S. News & World Report https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/editorial-roundup-texas-u-s-news-world-report/ By The Associated Press Dallas Morning News. September 8, 2022. Editorial: Texas’ cautious approach to marijuana use has been the correct path As support grows for cannabis, following scientific research make more sense. A leading medical marijuana retailer just opened its fourth location in Dallas-Fort Worth, evidence of the growth this business is having in the region. Political Cartoons But even as support grows for legal cannabis, Texas officials have been wary of fully embracing legalization for non-medical uses, and they are right to feel that way. Yes, Texas is taking baby steps compared to other states, but that is the right approach because it gives time for scientific and social research to establish clearer conclusions about the impact of expanded legalization for medical or recreational use. Public sentiment may be ahead of political will. A Dallas Morning News/UT Tyler August poll revealed that 72% of Texans support marijuana use for medical purposes, and 55% are behind recreational use. At least one statewide official, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, has voiced support for expanding medical use. “It’s about freedom. It’s about less government oversight, it’s about less regulation. It’s everything that being a conservative stands for,” he recently wrote. Currently, medical cannabis can be prescribed in Texas to treat certain conditions, including epilepsy, cancer, PTSD and neurodegenerative disorders. Marijuana advocates want to add chronic pain as a qualifying condition for the Compassionate Use Program (CUP). Advocates, including Texas Original CEO Morris Denton, suggest that cannabis could be a less dangerous option than opioids for treating patients. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cautions, however, that marijuana isn’t without risk: “Although marijuana is used for medical and non-medical adult use, this does not mean it is safe,” according to current guidelines. “Scientists are still learning about the health effects and the potential health benefits of using marijuana.” Treating chronic pain with cannabis would be more than a baby step for the state since 1 in 5 Americans suffer from this condition. A recent article in the National Library of Medicine mentions a study that showed fewer side effects and improved quality of life in chronic pain patients who used medical marijuana. The same study also mentions the need for further research to confirm such findings. That said, the era of putting people in prison for possessing small amounts of pot rightly appears to be behind us. Decriminalization is now a path that both the right and left are ready to embrace in Texas. Both Gov. Greg Abbott and his Democratic rival Beto O’Rourke support some level of decriminalization. O’Rourke’s position is far more permissive than Abbott’s, with a plan to fully decriminalize marijuana and expunge the criminal records of those arrested for possession. Abbott, meanwhile, would reduce the legal consequences for possessing small amounts of marijuana to a Class C misdemeanor. The better path is somewhere in the middle, with no criminal penalty for possessing small amounts but not the wholesale legalization O’Rourke is calling for. There are still too many unknowns to broadly expand legal marijuana use. The risk of stroke, heart disease and other vascular diseases are real, according to the CDC. Cannabis has also been indirectly linked to social anxiety and depression. Texas should continue to move cautiously with sound science as the guide. ___ Fort Worth Star-Telegram. September 8, 2022. Editorial: Why is this Texas Republican suddenly backing a Democrat against Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick? Anyone who was shocked when Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley stepped out in favor of Democrat Mike Collier in the race for lieutenant governor hasn’t been listening to the Hurst Republican. Whitley has been teeing off for years about Austin’s encroachment on local control, the state’s culpability for property-tax increases, and the hard-right turn of his party. And he’s laid much of it at Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s feet. Still, it made for significant news when a decades-long leader in Texas’ largest Republican county spoke out against a party poobah two months before Election Day. On the substance, Whitley is mostly right: State Republican lawmakers and leaders have generally been chipping away at local control, particularly for Texas’ largest — and Democrat-controlled — cities and counties. And the cost of public schools, for which the state should bear the brunt, is the biggest driver of property taxes. On the politics, Whitley’s comments reflect a reality in Texas politics: His brand of Republicanism, the one that built a durable GOP majority, is fading. Whitley’s interview on WFAA-TV’s “Y’allitics” podcast drew attention for his comments on Patrick. But he also talked extensively about how his party has shifted in his decades in office — and specifically the divide in Tarrant County. He’s retiring after four terms as county judge, and he acknowledged that the new environment favors candidates with a harder edge. “I don’t know if I would have been able to win the primary,” he told WFAA. Whitley lamented what he called an “ugly” GOP primary race to replace him, one in which Southlake Republican activist Tim O’Hare trounced Whitley’s preferred candidate, former Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. And he decried the polarization and partisanship that dominate politics. Republican primary voters want candidates they perceive more as “fighters,” particularly on cultural issues. But if they want to elect candidates to battle the establishment in Texas, that means warring with — other Texas Republicans. MORE GROWTH, HIGHER PROPERTY APPRAISALS, HIGHER TAXES Property tax increases fuel voter anger on all parts of the political spectrum. Growth is the main culprit — demand for real estate makes for higher property appraisals, which make for higher tax bills. Plenty of local governments — including Tarrant County under Whitley — have long enjoyed spending the added revenue while bragging that they haven’t raised tax rates. There aren’t easy fixes. We want growth, but it necessitates more spending on roads, schools and services. Property taxes pay for every level of local government. As Whitley has lamented, only cities can levy sales tax. Texas has no income taxes, and that won’t change. The Legislature, flush with surpluses fueled by the state sales tax, is promising relief by paying for a larger share of public education. But the more the state takes on, the harder the choices the next time there’s a recession. Some peddle fantasies about eliminating property taxes entirely, but they never quite explain how Texans would survive the sticker shock of a sales-tax rate that would have to double or more to compensate. Lawmakers should spend less time telling cities and counties what to do, too. Local control is not an inviolable principle; the state is right to protect property rights and prevent patchwork economic policies that limit growth. But in recent years, Austin has dictated both highly specific instructions, such as how and when local officials can levy taxes, and vague strictures that create uncertainty and strife, such as what materials communities can have in their schools. LIMITED IMPACT OF COLLIER ENDORSEMENT Whitley’s backing of Collier, a Democrat making his third run for statewide office, made headlines but will have little practical effect. Collier gave Patrick a stronger-than-expected challenge in 2018, and he’s turned up the heat on the lieutenant governor, especially on the issue of Texas’ power grid. His fate is largely tied to broader events, though, including the overall political environment and how well the candidate above him on the ballot, Beto O’Rourke, does at driving new voters to the polls. The whole episode is a marker. Whitley entered county office as a commissioner in 1997, as Republicans were locking in control of Texas politics. He’s the kind of Republican candidate who, by the thousands, turned Texas red and kept it that way. Now, he’s an outlier in his own party. ___ Houston Chronicle. September 8, 2022. Editorial: Texas is the Oath Keeper capital of America. Now what? The best illustration of the threat posed by far-right extremist groups such as the Oath Keepers can be found in the 48-page indictment of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes. Rhodes and 10 others were charged with seditious conspiracy for their alleged role in the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. Their indictment details how the Oath Keepers, a group that actively recruits military and law enforcement officers, trained and organized its members that day as if they were preparing for battle. This included basic training to get recruits “fighting fit for inauguration;” a reconnaissance team deployed to Washington to outline the planned insurrection; and marching towards the Capitol in “stack” formations designed to breach a building. If the precision and actions of the rioters attempting to subvert democracy that day don’t shake you to your core, perhaps this sobering fact will: more than 3,000 Texans, including elected officials and law enforcement officers, have been card-carrying Oath Keepers. The Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism published a report Tuesday, based on leaked Oath Keepers membership rolls, finding that Texas has had the most members of any other state who were either elected officials, law enforcement officers, military members or first responders. Texas is a big state, certainly, but more troubling than sheer numbers are the positions held by Texans who have been members of the radical group: six law enforcement officers across the state who lead their departments and four current elected officials, two of whom are...

Another Voice: Airbnb And VRBO Properties Should Pay Their Share Of Occupancy Taxes – Buffalo News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/another-voice-airbnb-and-vrbo-properties-should-pay-their-share-of-occupancy-taxes-buffalo-news/ I started my senior year of high school in 1974. Back then there were no cellphones or personal computers, and tweeting was something reserved for birds. Many travelers relied on travel agents to book rooms in hotels or motels. There was no Airbnb or VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner) on the yet-to-be-invented Internet. In January 2022, I assumed the duties of Erie County comptroller. In the first week, my staff briefed me on the county’s hotel occupancy tax (aka bed tax). The tax was created via local law in 1974 and requires lodging establishments to collect either 3% or 5% of the room charge (depending on the hotel’s size) from their guests. My staff explained that a number of establishments were delinquent in their legal obligations. Some hotels were not submitting quarterly tax returns, or not remitting the taxes, or were in violation of payment agreements. The money they are holding does not belong to the hotels; it was a tax paid by travelers and it belongs to the county. So, we notified hotels that we would be actively enforcing the law. Every dollar collected in hotel occupancy taxes is a dollar that will not have to be raised in property taxes. This whole exercise got us to thinking about the hotel occupancy tax. Much of the tax supports tourism which, in turn, benefits the hospitality industry. In recent years, Erie County has spent millions of dollars on the Buffalo Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, Kleinhans Music Hall, the Buffalo-Niagara Convention Center and a host of cultural organizations. The hotel tax, collected by local hoteliers, has helped to fund these expenditures. It’s been 48 years since the hotel tax law was passed, however, and travelers can now book rooms via the internet on Airbnb, VRBO or other hosting platforms. By booking rooms in this way, travelers are not paying the hotel occupancy tax, as the 1974 law does not allow the county to impose the bed tax on vacation rentals. This creates an uneven playing field, as only the hotels collect the bed tax and are registered with the county. For this reason, we recently drafted a local law and sent a letter to the Erie County Legislature and the county executive suggesting they amend the law to extend the tax to hosting platforms and vacation rental properties. This creates equity and fairness between vacation rental properties and traditional hoteliers. More importantly, it benefits the taxpayers of Erie County by developing additional revenue that can be used to support the tourist industry. Kevin R. Hardwick is Erie County comptroller. Russian Forces Retreat Amid Ukrainian Counteroffensive | Business News | Wfmz.com – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/russian-forces-retreat-amid-ukrainian-counteroffensive-business-news-wfmz-com-69news-wfmz-tv/ KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian troops on Sunday successfully pressed their swift counteroffensive in the northeastern part of the country, even as a nuclear power plant in the Russia-occupied south completely shut down in a bid to prevent a radiation disaster as fighting raged nearby. But Russia struck back at Ukraine’s infrastructure Sunday night, causing widespread blackouts, with the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions among those without power, officials said. Kyiv’s action to reclaim Russia-occupied areas in the Kharkiv region forced Moscow to withdraw its troops to prevent them from being surrounded, leaving behind significant numbers of weapons and munitions in a hasty retreat as the war marked its 200th day on Sunday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mocked the Russians in a video address Saturday night, saying “the Russian army in these days is demonstrating the best that it can do — showing its back.” He posted a video of Ukrainian soldiers hoisting the national flag over Chkalovske, another town reclaimed in the counteroffensive. Yuriy Kochevenko, of the 95th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, tweeted a video from what appeared to be the city center of Izyum. The city was considered an important command and supply hub for Russia’s northern front. “Everything around is destroyed, but we will restore everything. Izyum was, is, and will be Ukraine,” Kochevenko said in his video, showing the empty central square and destroyed buildings. While most attention focused on the counteroffensive, Ukraine’s nuclear energy operator said the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, was reconnected to Ukraine’s electricity grid, allowing engineers to shut down its last operational reactor to safeguard it amid the fighting. The plant, one of the 10 biggest atomic power stations in the world, has been occupied by Russian forces since the early days of the war. Ukraine and Russia have traded blame for shelling around it. Since a Sept. 5 fire caused by shelling knocked the plant off transmission lines, the reactor was powering crucial safety equipment in so-called “island mode” — an unreliable regime that left the plant increasingly vulnerable to a potential nuclear accident. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog that has two experts at the site, welcomed the restoration of external power. But IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said he is “gravely concerned about the situation at the plant, which remains in danger as long as any shelling continues.” He said talks have begun on establishing a safety and security zone around it. In a call Sunday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron urged the withdrawal of Russian troops and weaponry from the plant in line with IAEA recommendations. In fighting, Ukraine’s military chief, Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyy, said its forces had recaptured about 3,000 square kilometers (1,160 square miles) since the counteroffensive began in early September. He said Ukrainian troops are only 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) from the Russian border. One battalion shared a video of Ukrainian forces in front of a municipal building in Hoptivka, a village just over a mile from the border and about 19 kilometers (12 miles) north of Kharkiv. Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said Ukrainian troops have reclaimed control of more than 40 settlements in the region. Widespread power outages were reported Sunday night by Ukrainian media, with the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions completely blacked out, while Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy partially lost power, Zelenskyy said. “Russian terrorists remain terrorists and attack critical infrastructure. No military facilities, only the goal of leaving people without light and heat,” he tweeted. Ukrainian officials said Russia hit Kharkiv TEC-5, the country’s second-biggest heat and power plant. Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov called the power outage “revenge by the Russian aggressor for the successes of our army at the front, in particular, in the Kharkiv region.” Later in the evening some power had been restored. None of the outages were believed to be related to the shutdown of the reactors at the Zaporizhzhia plant. The Ukrainian General Staff said Russian forces had left several settlements in the Kherson region as Ukrainian forces pressed the counteroffensive. It did not identify them. An official with the Russian-backed administration in the city of Kherson, Kirill Stremousov, said on social media that the city was safe and asked everyone to stay calm. The Russian pullback marked the biggest battlefield success for Ukrainian forces since they thwarted a Russian attempt to seize Kyiv near the start of the war. The Kharkiv campaign came as a surprise for Moscow, which had relocated many of its troops from the region to the south in expectation of a counteroffensive there. In trying to save face, the Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday the withdrawal from Izyum and other areas was intended to strengthen Moscow’s forces in the neighboring Donetsk region to the south. The explanation was similar to how Russia justified pulling back from Kyiv earlier this year. Igor Strelkov, who led Russia-backed forces when the separatist conflict in the Donbas erupted in 2014, mocked the Russian Defense Ministry’s explanation of the retreat, suggesting that handing over Russia’s own territory near the border was a “contribution to a Ukrainian settlement.” The retreat angered Russian military bloggers and nationalist commentators, who bemoaned it as a major defeat and urged the Kremlin to step up its war efforts. Many criticized Russian authorities for continuing with fireworks and other lavish festivities in Moscow that marked a city holiday on Saturday despite the debacle in Ukraine. Putin attended the opening of a huge Ferris wheel in a Moscow park on Saturday, and inaugurated a new transport link and a sports arena. The action underlined the Kremlin’s narrative that the war it calls a “special military operation” was going according to plan without affecting Russians’ everyday lives. Pro-Kremlin political analyst Sergei Markov criticized the Moscow festivities as a grave mistake. “The fireworks in Moscow on a tragic day of Russia’s military defeat will have extremely serious political consequences,” Markov wrote on his messaging app channel. “Authorities mustn’t celebrate when people are mourning.” In a sign of a potential rift in the Russian leadership, Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed head of Chechnya, said the retreat resulted from blunders by the Russian brass. “They have made mistakes and I think they will draw the necessary conclusions,” Kadyrov said. “If they don’t make changes in the strategy of conducting the special military operation in the next day or two, I will be forced to contact the leadership of the Defense Ministry and the leadership of the country to explain the real situation on the ground.” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the head of NATO cautioned Friday the war would likely go on for months, urging the West to keep supporting Ukraine through what could be a difficult winter. Ukraine’s battlefield gains would help as the Biden administration seeks continued financial support of the war effort from Congress and Western allies, said Daniel Fried, a former U.S. ambassador to Poland and now a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington. “The Biden administration policy is evolving in a direction that is more and more justified,” Fried said. “More investment in Ukraine, more confidence in Ukrainian ability to prevail, a greater willingness to push the Russians — that looks like a good bet. I’m not saying Ukraine is going to win or that the West is going to succeed. It’s still an open question. But the investment in the possibility of strategic success is more and more justified.” Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Ukraine’s advances very encouraging, adding: “We and our allies must keep standing with Ukraine. Putin needs to recognize that the only way out is to end his failed war.” —- Associated Press writer Ellen Knickmeyer in Washington contributed. Regenerative Agriculture For Health And Sustainability The Epoch Times
Regenerative Agriculture For Health And Sustainability The Epoch Times
Regenerative Agriculture For Health And Sustainability – The Epoch Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/regenerative-agriculture-for-health-and-sustainability-the-epoch-times/ Soil isn’t just dirt—it’s the base of every ecosystem, a living and life-giving foundation that teems with billions of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that fuel a symbiotic ecosystem. At least that’s how it’s supposed to be. Our modern food and agricultural industries are built on monoculture methods, where large farmlands are planted with only one crop. This results in nutrient loss; chemical contaminants from herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers; and dried and compacted soils that lack biodiversity but host pathogenic species, such as toxigenic molds. Fortunately, there’s a growing movement to restore soil health and rebuild the very foundation of our food system. Regenerative agriculture conserves soil health and rehabilitates our food and farming systems. It focuses on regenerating topsoil, which can increase biodiversity, improve the water cycle, support carbon and mineral biosequestration, increase resilience to climate change, and strengthen the health and vitality of soil. It can also increase the quality of our food and reduce the use of chemical inputs that can affect our health. A Healthy Soil Ecosystem The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) stated that soil health, also referred to as soil quality, is “the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans.” Some definitions of soil health also include its impact on water and air quality, as well as plant and animal health. The soil ecosystem is a complex community of insects, fungi, and trillions of microscopic organisms. One gram of healthy soil contains 40 million individual bacterial cells. Bacteria are the most plentiful organisms in any ecosystem, as well as the most plentiful organisms on earth. All organic matter that’s added to soil—root exudates, plant residues, manure, and so forth—becomes food for soil organisms. Soil micro-organisms convert this organic matter into nutrients such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which plants need for photosynthesis. Plants depend on soil organisms for essential minerals and nutrients. Soil organic matter sequesters carbon and holds moisture in the soil. Developing and maintaining a healthy soil ecosystem results in improved nutrient content and long-term sustainability of plant production. Soil can be stressed by intensive plowing, heavy applications of liquid fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, exposure of soil surfaces to extreme temperatures, and the drying effect of direct sunlight. These soil stressors can compact or erode the soil and deplete its life-giving microbiome. Soil and Our Gut It’s little surprise that the health of the human gut microbiome is tied to soil health. Each individual’s gut microbiome is different, but like the soil, the gut microbiome should be diverse and plentiful. Our microbiome is host to trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that play a variety of essential roles in our intricate biochemistry, from digestion to hormone production. Its composition affects the functioning of the immune system, the endocrine system, and the nervous system through the production of neurotransmitters and more. The gut microbiome, therefore, has a direct effect on physical and mental health. Unhealthy diets, some medications, and environmental chemicals can significantly damage the gut microbiome, leading to negative health effects. Dr. Axe explains how “the foods you eat, how you sleep, the amount of bacteria you’re exposed to on a daily basis and the level of stress you live with all help establish the state of your [gut microbiome].” The quality of the soil microbiome directly affects the quality of the gut microbiome. Healthy and diverse soil microbiomes result in more nutritious foods that lead to healthier gut microbiomes. The complexity of the soil microbiome affects the health of all other creatures in the ecosystem and the food chain. Likewise, some chemical additives, such as glyphosate (RoundUp), the most widely used herbicide in the world, are known to damage our microbiome and are linked to neurological problems as well. Those who promote regenerative agriculture understand that we must change our current agricultural system by developing an ecosystem that’s rich with diverse plants, animals, insects, and microorganisms so that we’ll be able to ensure that our soils, crops, and animals—as well as we ourselves—will thrive. Soil Health Advocates  There are several groups working to improve the health of our soil for those purposes. The Soil Health Institute (SHI), an international nonprofit focused on safeguarding soil health, uses research and best practices to help farmers and others improve the vitality and productivity of soils. SHI also brings experts and leaders in soil health science together with industry to conduct research and help landowners and farmers understand how to adopt regenerative soil health systems. Doing so can “contribute economic and environmental benefits to agriculture and society,” according to the Institute. SHI has also produced a 60-minute documentary, “Living Soil,” which features diverse food production practices by farmers from across the United States who discuss strategies used to improve soil health. “Our soils support 95 percent of all food production, and by 2060, our soils will be asked to give us as much food as we have consumed in the last 500 years,” the documentary notes. “They filter our water. They are one of our most cost-effective reservoirs for sequestering carbon. They are our foundation for biodiversity. And they are vibrantly alive, teeming with 10,000 pounds of biological life in every acre. Yet in the last 150 years, we’ve lost half of the basic building block that makes soil productive.” In 2014, the Rodale Institute stated that “we could sequester more than 100 percent of current annual CO2 emissions with a switch to common and inexpensive organic management practices, which we term ‘regenerative organic agriculture.’” The Soil Health Academy is another nonprofit organization that believes that the “wide-spread adoption of regenerative agriculture has the remarkable potential to restore the health of our bodies, our farms, our communities, and our planet, as well as the economic viability of our nation’s farms and rural communities.” The challenge is that farmers and ranchers need to learn how to use soil-improving practices, the academy noted. Fortunately, there’s a growing list of people and organizations that want to help. The Bionutrient Food Association, the Organic Farming Research Foundation, Farmer’s Footprint, and many other groups and formal organizations are working to improve soil health and promote regenerative farming practices in the United States and around the world. Making the Regenerative Switch For farmers that take up regenerative practices, there are significant benefits, including lower input costs and rich soil capable of withstanding restrictions in chemical inputs. That point has particular relevance as many countries around the world face a shortage of fertilizer, prompting concerns about food security. The NRCS stated that the four principles used to promote soil health are to minimize disturbance by not tilling the soil, maximize soil cover by planting cover crops, maximize biodiversity, and maximize the presence of living roots in the soil. Determinants of soil health include air, water, soil organic matter, and minerals. Farmers can improve soil health by incorporating cover crops, crop rotation, remineralization, livestock, and natural predators. Cover crops are planted to cover soil but aren’t harvested. They help to aerate soil, promote water absorption and reduce erosion, and protect soil from temperature extremes and compaction. They increase soil quality and fertility by providing nutrients to enhance the biodiversity of soil microorganisms or biomass and build soil organic matter. Cover crops also help to reduce weeds, pests, and diseases. The Rodale Institute defines crop rotation as “the practice of planting different crops sequentially on the same plot of land to improve soil health, optimize nutrients in the soil, and combat pest and weed pressure.” This diversity improves soil health. Soil remineralization involves the addition of silica or granite basalt rock powder or seawater to soil in order to provide essential minerals that have been depleted by over-intensive conventional farming practices. Modern farming uses just nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, while remineralization provides these and other essential minerals as well. Grazing livestock on farmland also helps build a healthy soil microbiome. Plants develop stronger root systems after being grazed on. The hoofs of roaming animals help to aerate soil while manure adds nutrients. Feeding soil microorganisms with livestock manure, compost, and other organic plant residues provide for both crop and livestock nutrition. This has been a foundational principle of organic agriculture. The use of natural predators helps reduce plant infections.

Giants at Titans  Time: Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET (FOX), stream on fuboTV (try for free)  Open: Titans -6.5 Current: Titans -5.5 Featured Game | Tennessee Titans vs. New York Giants “This week, I’m backing a ‘dog without high expectations after an awful year against a team that could miss the playoffs after winning the No. 1 seed last year: the New York Giants +5.5 at the Tennessee Titans.  “New coaches have done well historically against the spread in Week 1, aside from a brutal stretch in 2018-19, but rather than play that blindly, I pick my spots with the new coaches I believe are the best candidates to be long-term success stories. And I definitely feel that way about Brian Daboll, who engineered one of the league’s best offenses in Buffalo and turned a divisive quarterback prospect in Josh Allen into a perennial MVP candidate. I don’t think the upside is nearly as high with the offense he’s inheriting in New York, but this should be a franchise on the rise after bumbling through front office and coaching mistakes over the last several years. “The team Daboll’s up against also happens to be one people are projecting to take a big step back in 2022. Elite wideout A.J. Brown is gone, replaced by the capable Robert Woods as the No. 1 option, reducing the ceiling of the passing game. The offensive line is a question mark as well, and I don’t anticipate Ryan Tannehill elevating the cast around him to the heights of 2021, even with a healthy Derrick Henry in tow. And the defense could be in major trouble after losing star edge rusher Harold Landry for the year, as Bud Dupree leaves a lot to be desired as a No. 1 pass rusher. With rain expected in the forecast, this should be a lower-scoring game where the Giants can stay inside the number and potentially walk away with a win.” — R.J. White in his SuperContest picks for Week 1. White has been SportsLine’s No. 1 NFL ATS expert over the last five years, going 445-378-24 against the spread to put him up more than 25 units on those picks at SportsLine. He’s also delivered a 56.8 percent hit rate on my SuperContest picks over the last seven seasons. Packers at Vikings Time: Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET (FOX), stream on fuboTV (try for free)  Open: Packers -1.5 Current: Packers -2 Featured Game | Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers “If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to be an MVP-caliber quarterback in the NFL, I have some good news for you: Aaron Rodgers revealed the secret this offseason. Apparently, all you have to do is have a psychedelic experience in South America. Rodgers did that this offseason and as far as I know, he is now the only NFL QB who has obtained omnipresent, super-galactic oneness.  “If Rodgers says it works, it clearly works, because he’s won two straight MVPs. Also, this would explain why Kirk Cousins has never won an MVP. I mean, if we had to rank every NFL quarterback on the possibility that they would go on a South American psychedelic bender at some point in their life, Kirk Cousins would rank dead last.  “Although Cousins didn’t do any psychedelics this offseason, I actually think he’s going to be good this year. For one, he finally has a head coach who doesn’t hate his guts, which seems like a positive step forward for him.  “Also, Cousins will be in charge of a high-powered offense that includes Justin Jefferson and Dalvin Cook. Although I’m picking the Packers to get to the Super Bowl out of the NFC this year, I’m NOT picking them to win this game and that’s because I think it’s going to take a week or two for them to adjust to life without Davante Adams.” — CBS Sports writer extraordinaire and Pick Six Podcast super friend John Breech on why he is picking the Vikings to beat the Packers, 26-23.  Chiefs at Cardinals  Time: Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here) Open: Chiefs -3 Current: Chiefs -6.5 Featured Game | Arizona Cardinals vs. Kansas City Chiefs “Tom Brady skipped 11 days of training camp and Aaron Rodgers went on a South American bender, and yet, somehow, it might be Kyler Murray who had the weirdest offseason of any NFL quarterback. … The relationship between Murray and the Cardinals feels like it’s at the tipping point, and a few ugly losses to start the season could lead to a full implosion and those losses might actually happen. With the Chiefs, Raiders and Rams in the first three weeks of the season, the Cardinals could be in three shootouts to start the year and they won’t have DeAndre Hopkins for any of those games. “Not only do the Cardinals have to deal with all of this, but they also have to play against Patrick Mahomes, who has never lost a regular-season opener. In four seasons as the Chiefs’ starter, he’s 4-0 in Week 1 and the Chiefs have scored an average of 36.25 points in those games. I would predict Kansas City to score 36.25 points on Sunday, but I’m told that’s not mathematically possible in the NFL, so I’ll go with 37.” — CBS Sports NFL writer and Pick Six Podcast co-host John Breech on why he likes the Chiefs to win by double digits on the road. To the read the rest of his picks, click here. Raiders at Chargers  Time: Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET (CBS), stream on Paramount+ (click here) Open: Chargers -4 Current: Chargers -3.5 Featured Game | Los Angeles Chargers vs. Las Vegas Raiders “The AFC West is primed to be one of the crazier divisions in the NFL this year, so why not start the year off with an upset? The Chargers have been a sexy pick to win the Super Bowl this season, but I believe the Raiders are catching them at a good time with prized free agent corner J.C. Jackson possibly sidelined for this game after undergoing ankle surgery earlier this summer. Going into an opener without your top corner and the task of having to defend Davante Adams is less than ideal for Los Angeles. Pair that with Las Vegas’s strong defensive line, and there’s solid upset potential here. “While Josh McDaniels’ head coaching tenure with the Broncos is largely looked at as a failure, he did come out of the gate strong with a 6-0 record. Meanwhile, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley wasn’t too friendly to bettors over his first season at the helm, owning an 8-9 ATS record overall and a 4-4 ATS record as a home favorite.” — Tyler Sullivan on why he is looking for the Raiders to upset the Chargers on the road.  Buccaneers at Cowboys  Time: Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC), stream on fuboTV (try for free)  Open: Buccaneers -2.5 Current: Buccaneers -2.5 Featured Game | Dallas Cowboys vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers R.J. White has been a monster at picking, games and it’s no surprise to learn he’s SportsLine’s No. 1 NFL expert. From 2017-21, he’s gone  445-378-24 on his ATS picks which returned $2,542 to $100 players. White is also 33-19-4 in his NFL picks involving the Buccaneers, so you’ll definitely want to see who he has in this one. We can tell you that White is leaning toward the under 50.5 total, but to see his pick for this game you’ll have to have over to SportsLine. Broncos at Seahawks  Time: Monday, 8:20 p.m. ET (ESPN, ABC), stream on fuboTV (try for free)  Open: Broncos -3.5 Current: Broncos -6.5 Featured Game | Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos Josh Nagel is a Nevada-based handicapper with more than 20 years of experience in the sports wagering industry. He’s also gone 17-6 on his last 23 picks involving the Seahawks, returning $1,040. We can tell you he’s leaning Under the total, but he’s also found a crucial X-factor on one side of the spread that you have to see. To check that out, you’ll have to head over to SportsLine.

This Week On Crypto Twitter: Gensler May Want Ethereum Under SEC Control, Tonga To Make Bitcoin Legal Tender – Decrypt https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/this-week-on-crypto-twitter-gensler-may-want-ethereum-under-sec-control-tonga-to-make-bitcoin-legal-tender-decrypt/ Illustration by Mitchell Preffer for Decrypt Broadly speaking, markets recovered this week despite extremely volatile midweek price movements from the leading cryptocurrencies. Over on Twitter, pundits were absorbed by Ethereum Merge updates, more crypto winter stories, and the latest saga in Gary Gensler’s unspoken war on Ethereum.  Terra CEO Do Kwon kicked the week off with a bang when he lashed out at self-proclaimed blockchain gumshoe @FatManTerra. Back in May, at the height of Terra’s collapse, FatMan, who claims to be affiliated with Terra’s Research Forum, accused Kwon of skimming off the top by cashing out hundreds of millions of dollars “directly out of the LUNA market cap” over several years “to pay Terra’s employee salaries and operating expenses.” What was FatMan’s offending tweet? Nothing to do with Do Kwon! FatMan tweeted that he was offering a “leftover allocation” for a “carry trade” on Bitcoin to victims of UST’s collapse. This time, Do Kwon was the one calling FatMan a fraud.  Kwon held his ground when one tweeter implied he was a hypocrite.  I am an optimist at heart, but even I can’t remain open minded about a “leftover allocation” for a “carry trade on bitcoin” — Do Kwon (@stablekwon) September 5, 2022 On Tuesday, Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin gave an update about the network’s long-expected overhaul to a proof-of-stake consensus algorithm. The second iteration of Ethereum is expected to address several key issues, including energy consumption, scalability, gas fees and speed. There was little to update us on, however… Everything is going to plan. The merge is still expected to happen around Sep 13-15. What’s happening today is the Bellatrix hard fork, which *prepares* the chain for the merge. Still important though – make sure to update your clients! — vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) September 6, 2022 That same day, a solo Bitcoin miner won a six-digit block reward. On Wednesday, a former MP for the tiny Polynesian state of Tonga, Mataʻiʻuluaʻi Fonuamotu (aka Lord Fusitu’a), tweeted that his country is scheduled to make Bitcoin legal tender next month. Lord Fusitu’a is a self-proclaimed Bitcoin bull and is known for keeping the world informed on the progress of Bitcoin adoption in Tonga.  It’s actually scheduled for the end of next month brother, but always appreciate your support and encouragement Fam https://t.co/Rj5hADDd1W — Lord Fusitu’a (@LordFusitua) September 7, 2022 Paolo Ardoino, the CTO of crypto exchange Bitfinex, praised El Salvador on the anniversary of Bitcoin becoming legal tender there. In his thread Ardoino likened the move to the Italian renaissance. Ardoino makes a great hype man for El Salvador, but a recent report by an American NPO says that Bitcoin use in the country has been minimal since the law came into effect.  El Salvador #bitcoin law 1st anniversary 1/ El Salvador has been extremely brave in adding Bitcoin as legal tender. — Paolo Ardoino (@paoloardoino) September 7, 2022 Peter Van Valkenburgh, director of research at crypto policy think tank Coin Center, said on Wednesday that the United States government, the U.N., and various other organizations, are free to use crypto privacy mixer Tornado Cash, despite the fact that the service has been blacklisted by the U.S. Treasury Department. One rule for them, eh? NFT fan Cirrus poked fun at crypto influencers with a chart from Dune Analytics showing daily ETH trading volumes on NFT marketplace OpenSea.  Finally, Vermont regulators dropped the bombshell this week that bankrupt crypto lender Celsius has been insolvent since 2019. Crypto podcaster Cas Piancey exhumed a tweet from 2019 to show everyone he knew all along.  Gensler vs Ethereum It was a piece of news that ostensibly did not seem to be that significant: U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair Gary Gensler backs giving the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Bitcoin oversight. Gensler has said in the past that Bitcoin is not a security, and thus does not fall under his jurisdiction. This week, Gensler reiterated his stance both on Bitcoin and the CFTC being the prime regulator over crypto—a proposal welcomed by many, both in Washington and the industry—while hinting that he hopes the SEC will enjoy considerable jurisdiction over crypto.  Crypto lawyer Jake Chervinsky took to Twitter after the news broke and pointed to what Gensler is not saying to argue that the SEC chief still has Ethereum lined up in his crosshairs.  For context, there have been rumors for a while that Chair Gensler’s SEC would love to walk away from its June 2018 guidance saying ETH isn’t a security, but they haven’t found a credible way to do that yet. (There isn’t one.) I don’t read this article as him giving even an inch. — Jake Chervinsky (@jchervinsky) September 8, 2022 Bitcoin-loving MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor read the news as bullish.  This morning, @GaryGensler, Chair of the SEC, noted that with the exception of #Bitcoin, which he analogizes to “digital gold”, the vast majority of crypto tokens are securities. — Michael Saylor (@saylor) September 8, 2022 The next day, an SEC filing revealed that MicroStrategy will sell up to $500 million in Class A stock. Guess what it may spend the proceeds on? That’s right, adding to its 129,000 BTC war chest; the single biggest corporate Bitcoin treasury in the world. Spithill Steers Team US To 1st Regatta Win At SailGP France – The Associated Press – En Español https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/spithill-steers-team-us-to-1st-regatta-win-at-sailgp-france-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ Jimmy Spithill steered Team USA to its first victory in SailGP’s three seasons by outlasting rivals Peter Burling of New Zealand and Sir Ben Ainslie of Britain in a tense podium race in light air Sunday at the France Sail Grand Prix in St. Tropez. It was a big bounce back for the Americans, who hadn’t finished higher than fifth in four previous regattas this season, including a disappointing eighth in the nine-boat fleet in home waters in Chicago in June. “This is a long time coming and it feels fantastic,” said Spithill, a two-time America’s Cup champion. “It’s a sign of strength for the team to get out there yesterday and then again today in completely different conditions. It’s been an all-around team effort — from the shore team, our coach Philippe Presti and of course the athletes. Everyone did an incredible job.” The Americans earned their first Champagne celebration in tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s global league by staying ahead of their rivals in wind so light that the 50-foot catamarans struggled to get up on their foils. “It’s really intense,” Spithill said. “Being in the lead is very difficult. It’s not clear where to go and things change so quickly.” It was a dramatic change from brisk winds in Saturday’s three fleet races, when Spithill had a second and two thirds aboard his blue-hulled cat with an image of the Statue of Liberty on the wingsail. The Americans scored their first fleet race victory of the season in Sunday’s opener. The fifth fleet race was abandoned after no boat crossed the finish line inside the 14-minute race window and the sixth race was canceled. Spithill did make a costly mistake when he bumped into the French boat during the fifth race, drawing a four-point penalty against their season points total. Although that race timed out and didn’t count, the penalty stands. The Americans remained in seventh place overall after five regattas. They’re nine points out of podium position with six regattas to go. “My mistake, we clipped the back of the French boat,” said Spithill, an Australian who lives in San Diego with his American wife and their two sons. “We got stuck at the bottom gate and didn’t have much steerage. It wasn’t on purpose, or dangerous. Look, if boats touch, someone is going to lose some points, and yeah, we were in the wrong.” Spithill took over as U.S. skipper at the start of Season 2. He got the Americans into the $1 million, winner-take-all grand finale in March in San Francisco, finishing third behind Australia’s Tom Slingsby and Japan’s Nathan Outteridge. But the Americans struggled after making some crew changes at the start of this season. ”Look, there’s been a lot of noise and narrative about the team and changes we’ve made this season,” Spithill said. “I’m just really proud that we didn’t let it affect us and just focused on getting out there and taking it race by race. This is a great overall result for the team and a result of a lot of hard work. We knew we’d get there.” Spithill ended Burling’s two-regatta winning streak. The Kiwis have come on strong after struggling through Season 2. Burling’s Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the America’s Cup in March 2021 against Spithill’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team. Slingsby’s two-time defending SailGP champion Aussie team missed the podium race for the second straight regatta and leads New Zealand by one point in the season standings, with Britain seven more points back. The next regatta is Sept. 24-25 in Cádiz, Spain. “The entire squad has a lot of confidence coming out of this event,” Spithill said. “Bring on Cádiz and let’s get after it.” ___ Follow Bernie Wilson on Twitter at http://twitter.com/berniewilson

Letter: The Meaning Of ‘woke’ | Letters | Richmond.com – Richmond Times-Dispatch https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/letter-the-meaning-of-woke-letters-richmond-com-richmond-times-dispatch/ What does ‘woke’ really mean? Editor, Times-Dispatch: What does “woke” really mean? The term “woke,” meaning “alert to injustice in society, especially racism,” has been used since at least the 1930s but was only added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017. But within the last several years, the term has been increasingly appropriated by the political right wing and used as an insult to those who might demonstrate the original intent of the word. Apparently, any person or activity that seeks to address or even point out past injustice is guilty of “wokeness.” The “sins” of the woke range from removing the statues on Monument Avenue to daring to suggest that the true history of our country be taught in our schools to eliminating the derogatory name of a beloved football team to taking the names and faces of smiling Black servants from grocery shelves. Seemingly, those who toss out “woke” as a pejorative are threatened by or fearful of any activity that gives dignity to anyone whose race, ethnicity, sex or sexual orientation varies from their own. The same is true for anyone who points out and tries to remedy past injustices. The moral indignation, of course, is driven by their fear that the above-mentioned and similar activities somehow will diminish their personal status in our society. Unfortunately, they don’t realize that any diminution results not from the actions of the “woke” but from their reaction to it. Tom Lawrence. Glen Allen. DC Bike Ride Draws Thousands Of Cyclists Raising Money For Local Non-Profits – FOX 5 DC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/dc-bike-ride-draws-thousands-of-cyclists-raising-money-for-local-non-profits-fox-5-dc/ Published September 11, 2022 12:53PM DC Bike Ride 2022 raises money for local non-profits The DC Bike Ride 2022 brought nearly 10,000 cyclists to the District Saturday to help raise money for local non-profits. FOX 5’s Ayesha Khan reports. WASHINGTON – D.C Bike had one of the biggest celebration of bicycling Saturday morning. The 20 mile ride drew in nearly ten thousand bike riders. The new and improved 20 mile ride allowed thousands of cyclists to tour the city’s famous sights and sounds, during the car-free event’s seventh annual year. “Great weather, it was a nice ride and it was just nice to get out and stretch out the legs some,” said one participant. While D.C Bike Ride celebrates bicycling as a form of healthy living, fitness, and transportation, it also acknowledges and supports diversity and inclusion as part of its day long event. It’s one of many reasons that Adina Crawford of the District told Fox 5’s Ayesha Khan, she rides for, every year.  “The personal meaning for me is community,” said Crawford. “I am more focused on getting those of us who are people of color out on the bikes, getting them out and moving. We have a space also so I think it’s important for us to get out and be a part of the community.” While providing a fun bicycling experience, the event also raises support for several local non-profits. “This isn’t just about Saturday and the ride but over the past six years we have donated over $170,000 to local community programs,” explained event and partnership coordinator, Danielle Berman. Some of those community programs include D.C based, Dreaming Out Loud. The non-profit helps many areas of the District grow healthy foods while also gathering produce from several other states that goes into community based food access programs. “D.C Bike Ride has supported us over the past couple of years,” explained executive director, Chris Bradshaw. “We raised about $25,000 and each time that we have done this, it helped us to continue with incredible programs but also one thing that we are working to fundraise for, is building a learning pavilion at the farm at Kelly Miller (Middle School) in Ward 7.” Organizers and some participants said that the event is not just about riding and taking in the culture of D.C but also serves as a reminder that the organization as a whole, keeps the community and its needs at the forefront. “I feel like D.C Bike Ride and Dreaming Out Loud are kindred spirits,” said Bradshaw.  “There is just so much synergy centered around health because your physical health is impacted by how much you are moving as well as what you eat.” “For us it’s about touching as many parts of the D.C community as we can,” said Berman. “It’s about access, it’s about making sure that this is something that anyone in D.C, no matter what neighborhood they live in, they can come, they can ride and have a great time.” The ride ended with a Finish Festival party that included music, eats and activities for all-ages at the National Mall in front of the U.S. Capitol.

Banking Giant DBS Announces Metaverse Partnership With The Sandbox (SAND) – The Daily Hodl https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/banking-giant-dbs-announces-metaverse-partnership-with-the-sandbox-sand-the-daily-hodl/ One of the leading banking firms in Asia is venturing into the metaverse with a new partnership with virtual world platform The Sandbox (SAND). According to a new press release, multinational financial services giant DBS is collaborating with The Sandbox to create an interactive metaverse experience. The duo will create DBS BetterWorld, which aims to highlight the importance of building a sustainable eco-friendly world. To create a virtual showcase, DBS will acquire a 3×3 parcel of LAND on The Sandbox as a part of the deal. LANDs are customizable units of digital real estate within SAND’s metaverse that players can own as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Sebastian Borget, co-founder and chief operating officer of The Sandbox, notes that the virtual world platform is creating a special plot of land dubbed the “SingaporeVerse,” which aims to bring the culture of Singapore to the platform. “We welcome DBS to The Sandbox as the first bank in Singapore to step into the open metaverse and join our efforts to create the SingaporeVerse, a neighborhood on our virtual map that will bring the culture of Singapore to life in the metaverse in a very engaging, equitable, inclusive way that is open to all. ESG [environmental, social, and governance] issues are important to us, and we look forward to collaborating on an experience that invites our audience to make a positive global impact, to discover the creative possibilities of our platform, and maybe to find their next life-changing opportunity in the metaverse.” News of the partnership had little impact on SAND’s price. The token is changing hands for $0.989 at time of writing, a 1.7% gain on the day. Cowboys WR Sends Bold Warning To NFL Before Week 1 Debut – Heavy.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/cowboys-wr-sends-bold-warning-to-nfl-before-week-1-debut-heavy-com/ Getty Dallas Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin greets fans as he exits the field. After an eventful and long offseason, the NFL regular season is finally here and one Dallas Cowboys rookie is ready to make a name for himself. Dallas kicks off its season with a rematch against their Week 1 opponent from 2021, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Facing the NFC South champions to open the year is a strong test, but it’s clear one wide receiver isn’t fazed. KaVontae Turpin turned heads in the preseason thanks to his two special teams touchdowns against the Los Angeles Chargers. After making the 53-man roster, the 2021 USFL MVP isn’t planning on slowing down. Speaking to The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Turpin sent a warning to opponents: he’s gunning for the endzone on each kick or punt return. “My mindset is to score every time I touch the ball,” Turpin said. “The guys, they know. After the Chargers game, they knew I was a big play waiting to happen, so they’re doing everything they can. And they don’t have to stay on their blocks too long, because I’m gonna be gone.” Having another weapon in quarterback Dak Prescott’s arsenal is great, but Turpin’s special teams contributions can be an “x-factor” in 2022. ALL the latest Dallas Cowboys news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Cowboys newsletter here! Join Heavy on Cowboys! Turpin Lights Up the USFL If you didn’t watch the USFL in its return season this past year, you may not have been familiar with Turpin’s career. In fact, the receiver’s career was essentially in jeopardy before his breakout year with the new league. After initially impressing at TCU, Turpin was dismissed from the team in his senior year for two domestic violence charges, per Sports Illustrated. In the years since, the former Horned Frog standout played in several minor pro football leagues, before getting his shot with the New Jersey Generals in the USFL. According to NFL.com, Turpin led the league in receiving yards with 540 yards on just 44 catches. He added 4 receiving touchdowns to his resume while playing for the Generals. He also tallied the league’s only punt return touchdown, and averaged 15.3 yards per return, which was best in the USFL. Dallas elected to take a chance on Turpin this past summer, and he has already shown he’s a legitimate answer to their questions at the return positions. Cowboys Offense Going to See More of Rookie? While Turpin’s role on special teams is known, it will be interesting to see how many snaps he earns on offense. The receiver’s speed could be a great tool in both the passing and rushing game, but it appears that offensive coordinator Kellen Moore believes in his ability as a pass-catcher. Sure, Turpin can be utilized in many ways, but Moore wants to give him a proper shot as an out-and-out receiver. “He obviously had a defined role that everyone kind of could see and project from a returner standpoint and the things a returner can do on offense,” Moore explained, per Machota. “But it’s been really cool to see him just become a receiver. I think that’s the coolest thing, as training camp progresses, other guys might be out a day and he just hops in there and starts taking advantage of plays and opportunities. We see him as a receiver. I think he’s going to be able to play a role that’s a receiver and not just a gadget guy, so to speak.” The Cowboys already have versatile options on offense, with Tony Pollard especially coming to mind. Mixing in another name as a “gadget” option is certainly a possibility, but expect Turpin to be running routes more than he will be running jet sweeps. More Heavy on Cowboys News Loading more stories

How Protein Differences Across Species Drive Biological Diversity Technology Networks
How Protein Differences Across Species Drive Biological Diversity Technology Networks
How Protein Differences Across Species Drive Biological Diversity – Technology Networks https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-protein-differences-across-species-drive-biological-diversity-technology-networks/ To better understand what drives biological diversity on Earth, scientists have historically looked at genetic differences between species. But this only provides part of the picture. The traits of a particular species are not merely the result of its genes but also the proteins those genes code for. 4 Understanding the differences between species’ proteomes — or all of the proteins that can be expressed — is, therefore, as important as understanding differences between genomes. In a new study, Yale researchers have compared the proteomes of skin cells from 11 mammals, which, they say, will help scientists understand the molecular drivers of biodiversity and how these factors have evolved over time. They found that while many proteins are similarly variable both across and within species, some are more variable between species, providing clues about which proteins might be more important in mammalian evolution. The work may also help researchers understand why some species are more resistant to cancer. Their findings were published Sept. 9 in Science Advances. “In order to understand biological diversity, along with knowing how the DNA is different across species, you may also want to know how species behave, develop, and look differently,” said Günter Wagner, the Alison Richard Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. And these attributes — how a species looks, behaves, and develops — are believed to be more closely related to protein levels than to DNA, explained Yansheng Liu, an assistant professor of pharmacology at Yale School of Medicine. Comparing protein quantities across species has been difficult, however, as the technology to do large-scale analyses hasn’t existed. But Liu has applied a method called data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry that now allows researchers to do this type of work. “It’s a conceptual and technical breakthrough that lets us work at this higher, more functionally relevant level,” said Wagner. Liu is a member of the Yale Cancer Biology Institute and Wagner is a member of the Systems Biology Institute, both located at Yale’s West Campus. It was there, during a cancer systems biology symposium they both attended, that their collaboration began. For the study, the researchers quantified all of the proteins expressed in skin cells of 11 mammalian species: rabbits, rats, monkeys, humans, sheep, cows, pigs, dogs, cats, horses, and opossums. The analysis, they found, provided information that couldn’t be obtained through other techniques. For instance, while previous research has looked at differences in mRNA — the genetic material used for creating proteins — they found that measuring proteins provided additional information that couldn’t be captured by analyzing mRNA alone, as mRNA is only an indirect measure of protein abundance. A strand of mRNA carries the code for creating a protein. And while single proteins can have a particular function, proteins can also interact with each other and act as groups, explained Liu. Just looking at mRNA won’t provide that information. “We found that, particularly for certain protein classes, the protein relationship to mRNA is very low,” said Liu. “That means the mRNA profile alone would be misleading.” The team then looked at protein variation both across species and across individuals within the same species, finding that, for most proteins, levels that were more variable between individuals were also more variable between species. But there were some proteins that didn’t fit that trend. For example, proteins related to cell division and RNA metabolism were more variable between species than between individuals of one species (humans, in this case). This suggests those functions play a particularly important role in mammalian evolution, said the researchers. “Inter-species versus inter-individual differences is very interesting from an evolutionary point of view,” said Wagner. “Comparing the two gives us an idea about how much variation is tolerated within a species and we can use that information to predict the capacity for evolution.” Lastly, the researchers compared protein-removal systems across species. There are two main systems responsible for removing proteins in cells, and they found that one was similar across species while the other exhibited quite a bit of variation among the different mammals. This protein turnover determines how quickly a cell can change its state, added Wagner. “If a new signal comes in, the cell needs to throw out the proteins that were necessary for its previous state and create new ones,” he said. And how quickly a cell changes state could be relevant to cancer. “Healthy cells can be influenced by nearby cancer cells,” said Wagner. “It will be important to understand whether protein turnover rates are related to how reactive cells are to the influences of tumor cells. Maybe species that are more resistant to cancer, such as hoofed animals like cows and pigs, have cells that are less able to change state and less susceptible to the signals from cancer cells.” And understanding cancer vulnerability is just one potential application of this work, researchers said. For instance, they can begin correlating protein differences with any other traits that differ across species, says Liu. Proteins are subject to chemical modifications, which occur when other molecules attach to a protein and activate or deactivate it. And these modifications contribute to traits that differ between and within species as they play a major role influencing protein function. The researchers assessed one type of modification in this study, phosphorylation, finding variations in phosphorylation levels were, for the most part, not related to variations in protein abundance, providing another layer of understanding about what drives biodiversity. The researchers will continue to assess other modifications in future work. “It will provide a more complete picture,” said Liu, adding that biological variabilities between species and individuals are what shape biological diversity on Earth. “Measuring the differences in both proteins and modified proteins across species will advance our understanding of biodiversity at the molecular level.” Reference: Ba Q, Hei Y, Dighe A, et al. Fantasy Island Season 2: Release Date Cast Spoilers News Good Housekeeping
‘Fantasy Island’ Season 2: Release Date, Cast, Spoilers, News – Good Housekeeping https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/fantasy-island-season-2-release-date-cast-spoilers-news-good-housekeeping/ Well, season 1 of Fantasy Island surely threw us for a loop. Viewers were introduced to Elena Roarke (Roselyn Sanchez), whose sole job was to run a luxury resort and make all of her guests’ fantasies come true. Despite seeming a bit too smooth in her behavior, she managed to somehow find a way to bring the ultimate satisfaction to those who chose to embark on an adventure to the mysterious island. Plus, she was able to bring out the best — and sometimes the worst — in those who came on vacation with an open mind to indulge on whatever desires they had. Yes, it’s a slightly creepy premise. But it also drew fans in to want more adventures from Elena, her right-hand woman Ruby (Kiara Barnes) and their trusty pilot/chauffeur Javier (John Gabriel Rodriguez). Naturally, this is leading many to wonder if Fantasy Island will get a season 2. Here is all the information you need to know about Fantasy Island 2, including premiere date, cast members, spoilers and how to watch: Will there be a season 2 of Fantasy Island? Yes, Fantasy Island is returning with a new season 2! But it will be some time before we can pack our bags once more. When will Fantasy Island season 2 premiere? Sadly, we’re not too sure. Originally Fantasy Island season 2 was expected to premiere this fall, around the same time as other dramas like 9-1-1. While there isn’t any official word about a specific release date, Roselyn did provide fans with an update on TikTok back in July. At the time, the actress told viewers it may be a while before viewers have the opportunity to travel back to the resort. “Hello everybody,” Roselyn said in the clip. “So, a little thing. Everybody keeps asking me, ‘When is Fantasy Island season 2 coming out?’ You know, we were supposed to premiere again during summer, but it’s been changed to midseason. So it’s gonna be early January, okay?” She specified in Spanish that Fantasy Island season 2 would be premiering during the first week of January 2023. This content is imported from Tiktok. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. As far as what to expect, Roselyn promised fans that season 2 will be just as juicy as the first installment. “I promise you guys, it’s worth the wait. This second season is just exquisite,” she said in the clip. “I am so very proud. I did some ADR yesterday and it looks so good. And the stories are so fantastic. So yeah, between season 1 and season 2, we have a gap. But it’s all amazing, and it’s actually really good news.” Who will be in the cast of Fantasy Island season 2? Based on the events from season 1, here’s who we can expect to return for Fantasy Island season 2: Roselyn Sanchez as Elena Roarke, the MC of the island who oversees the resort and its guests Kiara Barnes as Ruby Okoro, Elena’s assistant John Gabriel Rodriguez as Javier, the pilot who takes guests to and from the resort While the trio may be the current actors on the show, it doesn’t mean more won’t show up on Fantasy Island. In fact, fans may be seeing actors from other Fox shows make their way to the resort for a moment of paradise. “We’re really high on [Fantasy Island],” Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn told Deadline in September 2021. “It’s been exciting for us to cross pollinate some of the stars that we have in other series and do other exciting turns on Fantasy Island.” If what Michael’s saying is correct, it sounds like there’s a slight chance that we might see Rob Lowe and Ronen Rubinstein from 9-1-1: Lone Star potentially meet Elena and her crew soon! Of course, this is only wishful thinking because nothing like this has been confirmed. Fox How can I watch and stream Fantasy Island? Yo-Yo Dieting: Is It Good For You? Nutritionists Answer Hindustan Times
Yo-Yo Dieting: Is It Good For You? Nutritionists Answer – Hindustan Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/yo-yo-dieting-is-it-good-for-you-nutritionists-answer-hindustan-times/ Yo-yo, the toy spins quickly upwards and downwards, staying genuine to neither and it’s fascinating to watch the spin but once the spin stops, it leaves your eyes in a whirl and similarly, yo-yo dieting is almost a bad word in current times, where the awareness of eating healthy and the knowledge that accompanies it is not uncommon but the human mind is such. It plays the devil, dispelling any attempt at logic when the urgent need to achieve a goal sets in. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Neha Patodia, Founder and Head Nutritionist of Nutrimend, explained, “Yo-yo dieting is a cycle of weight loss and weight gain, often caused by extreme dieting. It usually begins with food deprivation and restrictions to achieve unrealistic weight goals followed by a period of overeating. In the restrictive phase of yo yo dieting, extreme diets are followed for immediate weight loss. The second phase of yo yo dieting involves overeating due to the unsustainable food restrictions imposed during the first phase. The food deprivations often lead to uncontrollable cravings and acts of binge eating out of frustration.” According to Rittika Agarwal, Nutritionist, Health Coach and Founder of The Mint Enfold, “Yo-yo dieting is bad for us as it puts us in this vicious cycle where we end up more frustrated with all the dieting only to gain all the weight back again. It slows down our metabolism, our hormones go all out of whack and the inflammation goes up too. Putting us at a risk for further weight gain which in turn can lead to numerous illnesses and it’s not just physical health, our mental and emotional health also suffers and quite naturally.” Anupama Menon, Nutritionist, Health Coach and Director of Right Living, said, “Fad diets and crash diets are alluring – promising instant outcomes just like instant noodles. Both are devoid of course of any long-term health. Both, in fact, promise long-term disadvantages but do such diets give good results? Yes, they do, they give you weight loss results initially but remember one golden rule – what you do to lose weight is a minimum of 70% of what you’ll have to do to keep the weight off. When you lose weight suddenly, you do lose muscle, tomorrow when you gain the weight back, it doesn’t come back unfortunately as the lost muscle, it comes back as fat. What Yo-Yo dieting does for you is to see life only until 20 metres far and not bother about the roadblocks ahead or how to mitigate them. And now it’s in your hands to decide which hands you want to place your health in.”

Zetly Sport Metaverse To Allow Clubs To Issue Their Own Money The Fintech Times
Zetly Sport Metaverse To Allow Clubs To Issue Their Own Money – The Fintech Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/zetly-sport-metaverse-to-allow-clubs-to-issue-their-own-money-the-fintech-times/ Technological partners Zetly, Transmira, Haste Arcade and PowChess, have announced a sport metaverse pilot programme. Based on the solutions of the web3 ecosystem, blockchain networks and digital technologies, Zetly will transfer a limited number of selected sports clubs to the metaverse, helping them to create a virtual non-fungible token (NFT) fan merchandise and virtual ‘Play2Earn’ (P2E) games. The pilot will link the club’s 3D and NFT objects to real-world assets and products, enabling creators and brands to monetise the new economy. Clubs will be able to use the solutions of the sports platform All-in-One Zetly to issue their own club tokens, create their own NFT, organise crowdfunding campaigns and offer sets of digital collections. The programme includes a 3D digital twin of the football stadium and its surroundings, creating a twin stadium virtually, providing a place where fans can meet from anywhere in the world. The solution will create new opportunities for clubs to monetise their involvement. Football club sponsors will be able to present their products in a virtual space, while club partners will be able to set up their virtual stores. Robert Rice, CEO, Transmira “The sport metaverse is an opportunity for development and a tool to engage fans, which is an ideal investment for those who put a close relationship with their fans first,” says Robert Rice, CEO of Transmira, a company that creates solutions on the BSV blockchain, which combines AR augmented reality, VR virtual reality and 3D spaces with the real world. “In this project, we want to use the experience gained during the 3D scanning of buildings in Los Angeles. We are convinced that our platform is the perfect partner for Zetly in the sports programme.” P2E solutions will be another element of the sport metaverse. Zetly, together with participating clubs, will offer fans games that will allow them to earn instant leaderboard payouts (ILPs), along with tokens and NFTs of the club that can be used within the games. P2E solutions will allow fans to expand their knowledge both virtually and live, for example about the city to which their favourite team is going. Fans will be able to earn tokens for their team or NFT awards by visiting places virtually, or in the real world, and learning about the history of a given club. These solutions will be implemented in cooperation with Haste Arcade. “We will provide the clubs participating in the Zetly pilot programme and their fans with a solution using ILP, a virtual scoreboard that allows instant real-time micropayments for participants,” explains Joe De Pinto, co-founder of Haste Arcade. The programme will also include an NFT digital fan store; a virtual shop of club products sold in the form of NFTs. “In addition to the sports metaverse solutions, the digital fan shop or games in the virtual space, the sport metaverse Zetly programme allows clubs to issue their own virtual club currency – the club token, using its platform. Thanks to the tokens, it will be possible to pay for real and virtual products and services offered by clubs,” said Michał Glijer, CEO of Zetly. Additionally, each participating club will have access to an educational package, which will include personalised workshops for knowledge development. It follows George Banks (Steve Martin) and his journey throughout the complications of his daughter’s wedding. Diane Keaton plays his wife, and the two were fantastic together. Latin America Is Ready For Crypto — Just Integrate It With Their Payment Systems – Cointelegraph https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/latin-america-is-ready-for-crypto-just-integrate-it-with-their-payment-systems-cointelegraph/ Thriving on exploiting users’ data, Web2 monopolies like Facebook and Google have ushered in an era of massive internet centralization in recent years. This concentration of power has enabled huge shares of communication and commerce closed platforms, giving users little control over how their data is collected. An emerging concept, Web3, will provide a means to pivot from centralization to an open-source internet. A recent report from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) found that this new digital economy could reach an astounding 1 billion users by 2031. If executed correctly, the decentralized internet will allow users to take control of their data and content. While Web3 promises to radically change the internet and its ability to provide value to users worldwide, key hurdles must be overcome before it can be adopted en masse. Related: Brazilian proposal would make crypto payments legal and protect private keys One major obstacle to mass adoption is the lack of local payments integration that many Web3 projects have. For example, a global Web3 project based in Germany likely doesn’t understand or offer the preferred payment options of people living in Brazil. While it seems tedious, accepting local payment options familiar to customers in their respective regions is a strategic decision that can make an enormous impact in winning market share. Let’s look at how Web3 projects can scale in Latin America and globally by expanding local payment options. Understanding local payment preferences Local payment methods are regionally preferred payment types. These methods include digital wallets, cash vouchers, local debit networks, bank transfers, open invoicing and other tactics used globally to transact in-store and online. Without local payment fluency, Web3 businesses aren’t able to access different markets across the globe. However, serving an international clientele by accepting local payments is no easy feat as each region subscribes to significantly different preferred payment options and regulatory requirements. Web3 projects often don’t have the proper infrastructure to reach global audiences at scale. One of the hottest Latin American markets for Web3 projects is Brazil, as its citizens are adopting digital transactions faster than in any other country. Brazil has seen a massive uptake of its national instant payment solution, PIX, implemented by the Brazilian Central Bank in 2020. For Web3 companies to reach this audience, they must forge a way to connect with local banks and stay in line with local regulations. In Mexico, the adoption of SPEI, a real-time gross settlements payment system created by the Bank of Mexico, is rising. Companies can capitalize on systems like SPEI by finding a way to partner with central banks or employing a third party to link to banks for them. Additionally, the pandemic and the rise of contactless payments highlighted the importance of flexible payment options. Online payment methods are gaining significant traction in Latin America. For example, Mexican convenience store OXXO recently launched a voucher-based banking app that allows users to pay for their utility bills and online purchases that now boasts more than 1.6 million users. Keeping up-to-date with new developments in the payments landscape is vital to serving customers and keeping pace with the competition. Establishing trust and loyalty In many countries in Latin America, individuals are eager to embrace crypto in the hope of a better financial future. A recent study found that Latin Americans are the most bullish on crypto compared to any other region worldwide. There is a huge opportunity for the Web3 movement to establish deep trust with Latin Americans as the centralized system has failed them. Local payments are a gateway to customer acquisition and loyalty. To effectively enter new markets, it is vital to establish quick integration with all relevant currencies. This results in new end-user conversions and higher success rates, which builds loyalty and trust with local audiences. Enhancing user experience It is a widely held belief that much work is needed to streamline the user experience in Web3. Regarding Web3 payments, users are looking for fast, reliable transactions in the payment method of their choice. Web3 projects can improve user experience by meeting customers where they are and speaking their language. Related: Bitcoin ATM installed in Mexico’s Senate Building Ways to enhance payment user experience include simplifying the onboarding process and providing exceptional customer support. Notifying users every step of the way so that they are confident their payment is being processed will ensure there is no confusion or apprehension. Web3 is still in its infancy and has some growing pains in its current state. But accomplishing the due diligence required to deepen infrastructure integrations worldwide will open up endless possibilities and, ultimately, transform the ways individuals socialize, transact and consume data. The big picture: Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff joined Mayor Eric Adams and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the Ground Zero ceremony, marking 21 years after the attacks at the World Trade Center. The event included short statements by some family members of victims, but no politicians spoke by tradition. What he’s saying: “It took a tragedy to unite our country. Back then, nobody cared if you were a Republican, Democrat, age, race, ethnicity — we were united. It took a tragedy to unite us,” said the speaker, who only identified himself as a cousin of a victim of the 1993 bombing. “I want to remind all of you [politicians] there, it should not take another tragedy to unite our country. Because if I have to stand at this podium again or another podium for another event because of lives lost because of dereliction of duty, it’s going to hurt.”
