Ex-Company Executive Gets Prison Term In Bid-Rigging Plot – The Associated Press – En Español https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/ex-company-executive-gets-prison-term-in-bid-rigging-plot-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) — A former engineering company executive has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison for his role in a bid-rigging scheme to defraud the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Brent Brewbaker, who worked for Contech Engineered Solutions, also was sentenced on Thursday to two years of supervised release after his prison term, court records show. U.S. District Judge Louise Wood Flanagan in New Bern, North Carolina, ordered Brewbaker to pay a $111,000 fine and report to prison in approximately three months. A federal jury convicted Brewbaker of conspiracy and fraud charges in January after a weeklong trial. Brewbaker conspired to rig bids for aluminum structure projects funded by the state of North Carolina between 2009 and 2018, according to prosecutors. Contech agreed to pay a $7 million fine plus more than $1.5 million in restitution to the state transportation department after the company pleaded guilty to charges of bid rigging and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, a Justice Department news release says.

And as Georgia coach Kirby Smart said after the Bulldogs throttled Oregon last week, it’s all about having better players. The SEC is more loaded with former high school stars than any conference in the country, and it’s only going to get stronger when then-to-be junior Arch Manning and Texas join in 2025. (Texas takes on Alabama today at noon Eastern on Fox). We took a deep dive into all the SEC rosters to see which high schools have the most alumni playing in the most powerful football conference of all. Get your popcorn ready. Here they all are. U.S. Academy Students Spend Vacation Days Serving In Honduras Adventist Review
U.S. Academy Students Spend Vacation Days Serving In Honduras – Adventist Review https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-academy-students-spend-vacation-days-serving-in-honduras-adventist-review/ Every other year, students at the Collegedale Academy (CA) high school in Collegedale, Tennessee, United States, are given the opportunity to serve others outside their community. CA’s guidance counselor, David Djernes, and IT director Michael Peel plan the mission trips. “Their passion and expertise in providing a meaningful mission trip for our students is excellent,” CA’s high school chaplain, Chris Massengill, said. For 2022, Djernes and Peel had originally planned to take a group of students to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to assist the Butterfly Paradise school and orphanage, the location of CA’s previous mission trip. Once COVID-19 intruded, however, Djernes and Peel had to change plans and chose a new location: a tiny cay off the coast of Guanaja, Honduras, known as Bonacca. In October 2021, the cay experienced a fire that wiped out nearly one-third of its buildings. The local Seventh-day Adventist school burned down, as well as parts of the English-speaking Seventh-day Adventist church. The Adventist community there needed assistance rebuilding their facilities, and Djernes and Peel volunteered the CA team. After the CA students’ arrival earlier in 2022, the team discovered that the church’s work crew was behind schedule in getting the foundation and floor poured for the new school. Because of this, other projects were identified for the volunteers while work continued on preparing the foundation. During the day, the students shoveled gravel, painted the outside walls of the church, and tied rebar for the foundation of the school, among other tasks. During their time on the island, the students of CA were able to meet many new people and experience the Guanaja community culture. “After a few days working, a group of local kids began hanging around the worksite and mingling with the students,” participants said. “Many of them even offered to help with the work, and they shared laughs with the CA students.” Collegedale Academy students served in a tiny cay off the coast of Guanaja, Honduras, known as Bonacca. [Photo: Collegedale Academy, Southern Tidings] After days of hard work, students attended church on Saturday (Sabbath) and participated in the local church service. Ron Smith, pastor of McDonald Road Adventist Church, one of eight constituent churches of CA, presented the sermon. After lunch, the team went on a hike on Guanaja and made more friends along the way. Once the group arrived at their destination, a secluded beach, they joined in a couple of games together and a sunset worship. After a brief boat ride, the students were back on Bonacca, participating in evening group activities provided by the church members. To end their trip, CA students took a 15-minute boat ride to a private island called Graham’s Place. They spent the day on the island, lounging about and enjoying the warm sun. Participants described the trip as a huge success. “The group worked to ensure that the community of Bonacca would soon have a school again,” one of them explained. “CA students knew that they would always remember their time in the Caribbean helping the church and school, in addition to making memories that would last a lifetime.” CA leaders explained that trips such as the one to Bonacca, which are designed to serve others, enlist the support of many people. “CA students wrote letters to raise money for their experience and for the project, and organizations in the area also supported the rebuilding project,” they said. “Mission trips are a blessing to all who are involved,” Peel added. “[This includes] participants who travel to do the project, the hosts for the trip, and those who support the work that is being done through financial means.” Since returning from the trip, the school’s leadership has found ways to continue the relationship between CA and the church, school, and community of Bonacca. In addition to a multiyear plan for the high school students to return annually to help with the needs in Bonacca and surrounding area, primary school students will also have opportunities to serve. “It’s our intention for Collegedale Academy to continue a close relationship with them and to be a sister school,” CA’s primary school chaplain, Tabor Nudd, said. “Our plan is for our [primary school] students to help from afar with various forms of support, including pen pals, online student interaction, teacher collaboration, and local fundraising for several projects to help their school.” CA leaders said the school feels blessed by this and other opportunities to have a schoolwide effort to serve. “The prospect of the long-term helping, relationships, and connections is exciting!” they said. All throughout the West this week, previous temperature records have been shattered–in the month of September, which is not typically the warmest month of the year in the region. Writing for Forbes, meteorologist Dr. Marshall Shepherd notes that heat waves like that in the west this week and the one in Europe a few weeks ago will become increasingly common due to climate change. And that raises questions about the human cost of global warming. “How many workers are being subjected to that heat? How many homeless or poor communities have insufficient options to cool themselves or seek medical attention for heat-related illnesses? How will the energy grid hold up?” Shepherd writes. “These are questions facing our new climate reality and ultimately why it matters.” The Big Read Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images The White House Wants Crypto Mining Companies To Share How Much Energy They Use With Regulators The White House announced on Thursday that crypto mining operations in the U.S. are on track to consume as much energy as all of the nation’s home computers, necessitating formalized measures for curbing the industry’s power demands. A new report issued by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy addressed environmental concerns that industrial-scale crypto miners could strain local and federal energy grids, and undermine global climate change efforts. Air Conditioner Tech Is Outdated. These Are AC Options For A Hotter Future. – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/air-conditioner-tech-is-outdated-these-are-ac-options-for-a-hotter-future-the-washington-post/ This week, Californians got a reminder of one of the most vexing paradoxes of global warming. With temperatures well over 110 degrees Fahrenheit in some regions on Tuesday night, hundreds of thousands of the state’s residents received beeping text alerts to notify them that the power grid, straining under the weight of millions of air-conditioning units, was about to collapse. Save power now, the text warned, or face rolling blackouts. Consumers conserved, and the state’s electricity grid made it out of a record-breaking hot day relatively unscathed. Still, as temperatures rise worldwide, more people are going to need to install air conditioners. But as currently sold, AC units can actually make global warming worse: On hot days, they suck tons of electricity from the grid, and their chemical refrigerants can accelerate global warming. This is why researchers and start-ups are hoping to create new, cutting-edge AC units. AC technology has seen only “incremental improvements over the past 100 years,” said Ankit Kalanki, a manager at Third Derivative, a climate tech accelerator co-founded by the energy think tank RMI. “There has not been a step change in innovation.” The good news is that companies are hurrying to develop more efficient ACs. The question is whether they will be ready in time. Current ACs aren’t going to cut it Over the next few decades, the global demand for air conditioning is expected to skyrocket. According to the International Energy Agency, the number of AC units in buildings across the world should reach 5.6 billion by 2050, up from only around 2 billion units today. But unless air conditioning gets an efficiency revamp, all those ACs are going to put unprecedented strain on the electricity grid. Air conditioners and electric fans already account for approximately 10 percent of electricity consumption worldwide. On extremely hot days, AC efficiency drops, as the units have to work harder to move heat from indoors to outdoors. During a heat wave, millions of people come home and turn on their ACs at the same time, somewhere between the hours of 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. When that happens, air conditioning can account for a whopping 60 to 70 percent of electricity demand, and shake grids like California’s. Meanwhile, the key component of modern air conditioners — chemicals known as refrigerants — have been the bane of the atmosphere for decades. ACs work by exposing a liquid refrigerant, a chemical with a low boiling point, to hot indoor air. That heat causes the refrigerant to evaporate into gas, cooling the air. A compressor then turns the refrigerant back into liquid and repeats the process. The problem is that refrigerants can leak out of air conditioners, both during use and, more commonly, when the ACs are discarded. Early ACs were largely made with chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which were responsible for one of the first truly global climate anxieties: the hole in the ozone layer. CFCs were phased out by the 1987 Montreal Protocol, an international treaty to counteract ozone hole depletion, and eventually replaced by hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. But HFCs have their own problem — they are greenhouse gases that, in the short term, are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide. An amendment to the Montreal Protocol has HFCs set to phase down dramatically by the mid-2040s; in the meantime, however, they’re still contributing to global warming. There are a lot of ways to make existing AC technology more efficient. Some newer AC units use different refrigerants, such as one known as R-32, which has less planet-warming potential than other hydrofluorocarbons and also takes less energy to compress, thus saving electricity. Other units use technology known as “variable speed compressors,” that allow the unit to run on different settings. The compressor can speed up if it’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit and sweltering, or slow down if it’s only 85 degrees. That can help save on electricity and utility bills. And more advanced models are just around the corner. Kalanki was one of the leaders of an initiative at RMI known as the Global Cooling Prize, which rewarded manufacturers who could produce affordable AC prototypes that would be at least five times better for the climate than existing models. Two companies received the prize in tandem: Gree Electric Appliances and Daikin Industries. Both used traditional vapor compression technology but with improved refrigerants and clever designs that could change settings in response to outdoor temperatures. Other companies, start-ups, and researchers are investigating whether they can ditch vapor compression entirely. A start-up called Blue Frontier uses a liquid that sucks moisture from the air and stores it in a tank to control the temperature. According to the company, this approach could save up to 60 percent of the electricity required to run an AC year-round. And a group of researchers at Harvard University has developed an air conditioning prototype that they call coldSNAP. The prototype doesn’t use a refrigerant, but uses a special coating on a ceramic frame to evaporate water to cool the indoor space without adding moisture to the air. “Because we don’t have the vapor compression system and the energy of trying to release and compress the refrigerants, the energy consumption of these systems is far, far lower,” said Jonathan Grinham, one of the researchers on the project. What to look for when buying Some of these new designs may take years to reach the market, and when they do, they may still be more expensive than conventional ACs. But in the meantime, Kalanki says, there are still lots of options to buy a more efficient AC unit.“There are technologies that are two to three times more efficient than the most common ACs on the market today,” Kalanki said. “The challenge is that adoption is very low.” Most consumers, he argues, are just looking at the sticker price on an air conditioning unit, and ignoring the fact that buying a more expensive unit upfront could save them money in the long run. He recommends that buyers look at three things when considering an AC unit: The type of refrigerant used, the efficiency rating, and whether the unit has a variable-speed compressor or not. Those metrics can tell consumers whether their unit is likely to cost them thousands of dollars in electricity bills down the line, and whether it will add unduly to the problem of climate change. Ultimately, he added, the government needs to set stricter performance standards for air conditioners so that all ACs on the market — not just higher-end ones — are efficient and safe for the planet. “There are regulations in place to set the floor for air conditioners,” he said. “But that floor is a bit too low.”

Home Affordability Decreases In Texas | News | Palestineherald.com – Palestine Herald Press https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/home-affordability-decreases-in-texas-news-palestineherald-com-palestine-herald-press/ Texas homes are becoming less affordable, according to a new report by the Texas Real Estate Research Center. While still affordable compared to many other parts of the country, income levels are falling short of rising home prices, the report found. “Texas still remains affordable for homebuyers relative to other large areas, think about cities on the East and West coasts, however, it’s diminished slightly,” said Clare Losey, TRERC assistant research economist and author of the report. Jeanie Belcher of Integrity Real Estate Brokerage in Palestine said that prices have brought property values up to a more reasonable level. “It’s still more affordable to buy a house here than a lot of other places in Texas,” Belcher said. “But housing was so low here for so long. It seems to be catching up to where it needs to be.” “We also saw a huge shift during COVID where people could afford more,” said Jodi Davis of Combined Associates Real Estate in Palestine. “When everything went back to normal and people could no longer work and live wherever they wanted, we’re seeing it slowly shift back.” The Housing Affordability Index compares the family income necessary to purchase a median-priced home. When the price of a home outpaces the average family income, homes become less affordable. Holding a ratio of 1.0 means a family income is exactly sufficient to purchase a median-priced home; a number below 1.0 means housing is less affordable. In Texas, housing affordability declined year-over-year causing the gap between median sales price and family income to rise, Losey said. In 2020, the statewide affordability ratio was 1.78, it declined to 1.53 in 2021 and now sits at 1.22 in 2022, data shows. The report also looks at major metropolitan statistical areas and large counties across the state. In 2021, every Texas MSA and county that was studied had an affordability index above 1.0. In 2022, at least four studied MSAs and counties fell before the 1.0 threshold, while one, Denton County, sat at exactly 1.0. Counties that fell below the affordability threshold most significantly were Travis County, home to Austin and Collin County, home to Plano. Travis County reported an index of 0.83 while Collin County reported an index of 0.84. Kerr County, southwest of Travis County, reported an index of 0.95, while the Austin-Round Rock MSA reported an index of 0.96. Wichita Falls and Odessa remained the most affordable places to live with indexes of 2.1 and 2.06, respectively. “Affordability has been diminishing for homebuyers since the end of the Great Recession,” Losey said. “However, it became an even larger concern and became more prevalent during the pandemic.” Losey also said the average annual appreciation on a Texas home is about 4% to 5%. Since the start of the pandemic, home appreciation rose upward of 20% year over year, but median incomes, which rose an average of 0.81% between 2020 and 2021, have not kept pace. “The household income growth just hasn’t kept pace with the increase in home prices, and it’s widening the gap between home prices and household income,” she said. “As that gap widens, affordability diminishes.” Belcher said East Texas appears to be holding steady. “Obviously a rise in prices would widen the gap,” Belcher said. “But we are still getting a lot of prequalified buyers.” Losey attributed the decrease in affordability to two reasons: rising mortgage rates and strained supply. RISING MORTGAGE RATES Experts say rising mortgage rates is one of the greatest factors in decreasing affordability. In an effort to stifle rising inflation, the Federal Reserve has raised its federal fund rate, an interest rate used by banks when borrowing and lending to each other. While the federal interest rate is separate from mortgage rates, they are tied together in that when the Fed raises its rate impacting banks, mortgage lenders typically follow suit. The national average for a 30-year fixed mortgage rate was about 5.22% in August. At the height of the pandemic in December 2020, mortgage rates were set at 2.68%, the lowest rate since the 1980s. “Of course when interest rates go up it makes it more difficult to purchase or afford a home,” said Lisa Priest of Picket Fence Realty in Palestine “But the truth is interest rates are still very good right now even though they have gone up.” Increasing rates then raise the cost of buying a home with a mortgage, which makes it more difficult for buyers and particularly first-time homebuyers to enter the market as they need larger down payments to contend with the rising rates and rising prices. “Although Texas does remain relatively affordable, it is not necessarily affordable to those that are indigenous to the state of Texas,” said Roger Arriaga, executive director of the Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers. SHORT SUPPLY Texas’ housing real estate market has been in short supply since long before the pandemic, experts said, but the pandemic certainly exacerbated the problem. The pandemic stifled supply chains leading to an increase in the cost of lumber and building materials. It also forced staffing shortages across industries. This led to an increase in the cost and time it takes to build a home, not only impacting supply but exacerbating prices. “The housing shortage created such a huge competition in purchasing,” said Bill Head, director of communications MetroTex Association of REALTORS. “That in itself created an increase in sale prices and in many cases, in most of the areas in North Texas, the sales price was higher than the appraised price, which is very uncommon.” East Texas is seeing very little new development at this point, but signs point to an upward trend. “There is some new construction locally,” Priest said. “But it’s one or two here and there, not big developments.” Texas is also bringing in economic development with major announcements from global corporations such as Tesla, Samsung, Texas Instruments and many more. The establishment or expansions of these major headquarters brings economic development and jobs to the area, but those people need homes, further straining housing supply, Head said. Head likened the current housing market to “a perfect storm,” where low supply, rising prices and rates, and an influx of new Texans are all playing a role in the state’s affordability. “Buyers are predominantly coming in from out of town,” Davis said. “We need more housing.” A RIPPLE EFFECT Experts warn that a decline in affordability has a ripple effect across multiple aspects including reduced health outcomes, an increase in crime and one’s ability to build wealth. According to the Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Providers, almost half of Texans are spending more than 30% of their household income on housing costs, deeming them cost-burdened. The rising cost of rent, combined with other potentially overwhelming debts such as student loan debt and now inflation and rising home prices are pushing buyers, and especially first-time home buyers, out of the market. The delay in purchasing a home often leads to a delay in starting a family and a delay in one’s ability to build wealth. And if one does not believe they can buy a home, have a family and financially take care of that family in Texas, they may not take a job, impacting the workforce, said Russell Berry, chairman of the Texas Realtors. “Businesses that are coming from outside of Texas, they’re looking for a workforce,” Berry said. “Workforce needs housing, and at some point, when we tip the scale of affordability, the workforce housing has to go into apartments and has to rent, and they will not see that wealth that they can get from buying a home.” Berry added that he can see it becoming a problem. Ultimately, Arriaga, Losey, Berry and Head said increasing supply is the likely best way to ensure Texas remains affordable. “If all else is equal, if we can expect inflation will stay with us for a while longer, interest rates are not going to go back down to the record levels they were, then really the only thing we can count for is more supply,” Arriaga said.

Signs There Is Something Wrong With Your Gut — Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/signs-there-is-something-wrong-with-your-gut-eat-this-not-that-eat-this-not-that/ An unhealthy gut can do more than cause tummy troubles–when your microbiome is off your mood can be too. “Living inside every person are trillions of microorganisms- bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses-that are collectively known as the microbiome,” Dr. Jessica Cho, M.D. and Integrative Medicine Specialist with Wellness at Century City tells us. She adds, “When you are healthy, your microbiome detoxifies your gut, boosts your immunity, and synthesizes specific vitamins and amino acids. Thus, several diseases including cancer, autoimmune disorders, and autism spectrum disorder-are now thought to be influenced by the gut microbiome.” Recognizing the signs of a microbiome imbalance is essential to overall health and Eat This, Not That! Health spoke with experts who share what signals to look out for. Read on—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You’ve Already Had COVID. Shutterstock Dr. Samrat Jankar, Surgical Gastroenterologist, Gastroenterologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon and Colorectal Surgeon with Clinic Spots says, “Your gut microbiome is the collection of all the microbes (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa) that live in your digestive tract. These microbes play a crucial role in keeping you healthy by helping to break down food, synthesize vitamins, and protect against pathogens.” Dr. Jankar says, “There are several things you can do to help keep your gut microbiome healthy, including: -Eating a diverse array of fresh fruits and vegetables -Avoiding processed foods -Limiting your intake of antibiotics” Dr. Cho shares, “Environmental exposures and diet may tip the balance of your microbiome, leading to higher susceptibility to infection. Probiotics, which are foods that naturally host microbiota or supplement pills, repair your microbiome and support your digestive health.” Dr. Jankar tells us, “Poor gut health has been linked to a variety of mood disorders, including anxiety and depression. This is thought to be due to the fact that the gut and brain are connected via the vagus nerve, which allows for communication between the two. Additionally, gut microbes produce neurotransmitters that can impact mood. Therefore, maintaining a healthy gut is essential for good mental health.” Dr. Cho explains, “Your microbiota influences not only the gut, but also brain function through immune and endocrine pathways and the nervous system. The gut microbiota of individuals with mood disorders contrasts significantly with that of healthy individuals because it secrets neurotransmitters and metabolites that influence our natural neurotransmitter levels, which affects behavior and mood. Poor gut health has been linked to a myriad of mood disorders, including anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder.”  Dr. Cho says, “Digestion issues including IBS, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and bloating are a sign of an unhealthy gut. Simple carbs like glucose and lactose are easily absorbed by our own small intestine, but we rely on our gut microbiome to help digest more complex structures. With a malfunctioning gut microbiome, we may experience digestive problems.” According to Dr. Cho, “Autoimmune diseases such as thyroid conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, and type 1 diabetes. Some microbes occupy niches in our gut that might otherwise host harmful bacteria, so without a robust microbiome, we may be more susceptible.” “Your gut microbiome influences inflammatory markers, which contributes to weight management,” Dr. Cho explains. Dr. Cho states, “there is a bi-directional relationship between gut microbiome and heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metals may contribute to the progression of various metabolic diseases due to perturbations of the gut microbiota by altering the pH, oxidative balance, and concentrations of detoxification enzymes in heavy metal metabolism and compromised integrity of intestinal barrier.” Heather Newgen Heather Newgen has two decades of experience reporting and writing about health, fitness, entertainment and travel. Drone Lands On Astonishingly Steep Surfaces – Fighting Hawks Magazine – Fighting Hawks Magazine https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/drone-lands-on-astonishingly-steep-surfaces-fighting-hawks-magazine-fighting-hawks-magazine/ As Verne understood, the U.S. Civil Conflict (throughout which 60,000 amputations had been carried out) inaugurated the trendy prosthetics period in america, because of federal funding and a wave of design patents filed by entrepreneurial prosthetists. The 2 World Wars solidified the for-profit prosthetics trade in each america and Western Europe, and the continuing Conflict on Terror helped catapult it right into a US $6 billion dollar trade throughout the globe. This latest funding is just not, nevertheless, a results of a disproportionately massive variety of amputations in navy battle: Round 1,500 U.S. soldiers and 300 British soldiers misplaced limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan. Limb loss within the basic inhabitants dwarfs these figures. In america alone, greater than 2 million folks dwell with limb loss, with 185,000 folks receiving amputations yearly. A a lot smaller subset—between 1,500 to 4,500 youngsters annually—are born with limb variations or absences, myself included. At present, the individuals who design prostheses are usually well-intentioned engineers reasonably than amputees themselves. The fleshy stumps of the world act as repositories for these designers’ goals of a high-tech, superhuman future. I do know this as a result of all through my life I’ve been fitted with a number of the most cutting-edge prosthetic devices available on the market. After being born lacking my left forearm, I used to be one of many first cohorts of infants in america to be fitted with a myoelectric prosthetic hand, an digital system managed by the wearer’s muscle mass tensing in opposition to sensors contained in the prosthetic socket. Since then, I’ve donned quite a lot of prosthetic arms, every of them striving towards excellent constancy of the human hand—generally at a value of aesthetics, generally a value of performance, however at all times designed to imitate and change what was lacking. In my lifetime, myoelectric arms have advanced from clawlike constructs to multigrip, programmable, anatomically correct facsimiles of the human hand, most costing tens of hundreds of {dollars}. Reporters can’t get sufficient of those refined, multigrasping “bionic” arms with lifelike silicone skins and natural actions, the unstated promise being that incapacity will quickly vanish and any misplaced limb or organ might be changed with an equally succesful duplicate. Prosthetic-hand innovation is handled like a high-stakes competitors to see what’s technologically doable. Tyler Hayes, CEO of the prosthetics startup Atom Limbs, put it this fashion in a WeFunder video that helped increase $7.2 million from traders: “Each moonshot in historical past has began with a good quantity of loopy in it, from electrical energy to area journey, and Atom Limbs is not any totally different.” We’re caught in a bionic-hand arms race. However are we making actual progress? It’s time to ask who prostheses are actually for, and what we hope they’ll really accomplish. Every new multigrasping bionic hand tends to be extra refined but in addition dearer than the final and fewer more likely to be coated (even partly) by insurance coverage. And as latest analysis concludes, a lot easier and much inexpensive prosthetic gadgets can carry out many duties equally properly, and the flowery bionic arms, regardless of all of their digital choices, are not often used for greedy. Exercise arms, corresponding to this one manufactured by prosthetics agency Arm Dynamics, are inexpensive and extra sturdy than bionic prostheses. The attachment from prosthetic-device firm Texas Assistive Gadgets rated for very heavy weights, permitting the writer to carry out workout routines that may be dangerous or inconceivable along with her way more costly bebionic arm.Gabriela Hasbun; Make-up: Maria Nguyen for MAC cosmetics; Hair: Joan Laqui for Residing Proof Operate or Type In latest a long time, the overwhelming focus of analysis into and improvement of latest synthetic arms has been on perfecting various kinds of grasps. Most of the most costly arms available on the market differentiate themselves by the quantity and number of selectable prehensile grips. My very own media darling of a hand, the bebionic from Ottobock, which I obtained in 2018, has a fist-shaped energy grip, pinching grips, and one very particular mode with thumb on high of index finger for politely handing over a bank card. My Twenty first-century myoelectric hand appeared outstanding—till I attempted utilizing it for some routine duties, the place it proved to be extra cumbersome and time consuming than if I had merely left it on the sofa. I couldn’t use it to tug a door shut, for instance, a process I can do with my stump. And with out the extraordinarily costly addition of a powered wrist, I couldn’t pour oatmeal from a pot right into a bowl. Performing duties the cool bionic way, although it mimicked having two arms, wasn’t clearly higher than doing issues my method, generally with the assistance of my legs and ft. After I first spoke with Ad Spiers, lecturer in robotics and machine studying at Imperial Faculty London, it was late at night time in his workplace, however he was nonetheless animated about robotic arms—the present focus of his analysis. Spiers says the anthropomorphic robotic hand is inescapable, from the truth of immediately’s prosthetics to the fantasy of sci-fi and anime. “In certainly one of my first lectures right here, I confirmed clips of films and cartoons and the way cool filmmakers make robotic arms look,” Spiers says. “Within the anime Gundam, there are such a lot of close-ups of gigantic robotic arms grabbing issues like large weapons. However why does it have to be a human hand? Why doesn’t the robotic simply have a gun for a hand?” It’s time to ask who prostheses are actually for, and what we hope they’ll really accomplish. Spiers believes that prosthetic builders are too caught up in kind over operate. However he has talked to sufficient of them to know they don’t share his viewpoint: “I get the sensation that individuals love the thought of people being nice, and that arms are what make people fairly distinctive.” Practically each college robotics division Spiers visits has an anthropomorphic robotic hand in improvement. “That is what the long run appears like,” he says, and he sounds somewhat exasperated. “However there are sometimes higher methods.” The overwhelming majority of people that use a prosthetic limb are unilateral amputees—folks with amputations that have an effect on just one facet of the physique—they usually nearly at all times use their dominant “fleshy” hand for delicate duties corresponding to choosing up a cup. Each unilateral and bilateral amputees additionally get assist from their torsos, their ft, and different objects of their setting; not often are duties carried out by a prosthesis alone. And but, the frequent medical evaluations to find out the success of a prosthetic are primarily based on utilizing solely the prosthetic, with out the assistance of different physique elements. Such evaluations appear designed to reveal what the prosthetic hand can do reasonably than to find out how helpful it really is within the every day lifetime of its person. Disabled persons are nonetheless not the arbiters of prosthetic requirements; we’re nonetheless not on the coronary heart of design. The Hosmer Hook [left], initially designed in 1920, is the terminal system on a body-powered design that’s nonetheless used immediately. A hammer attachment [right] could also be more practical than a gripping attachment when hammering nails into wooden.Left: John Prieto/The Denver Put up/Getty Pictures; Proper: Hulton-Deutsch Assortment/Corbis/Getty Pictures Prosthetics within the Actual World To learn how prosthetic customers dwell with their gadgets, Spiers led a study that used cameras worn on individuals’ heads to report the every day actions of eight folks with unilateral amputations or congenital limb variations. The examine, published last year in IEEE Transactions on Medical Robotics and Bionics, included a number of types of myoelectric arms in addition to body-powered programs, which use actions of the shoulder, chest, and higher arm transferred by a cable to mechanically function a gripper on the finish of a prosthesis. The analysis was carried out whereas Spiers was a analysis scientist at Yale College’s GRAB Lab, headed by Aaron Dollar. Along with Greenback, he labored carefully with grad pupil Jillian Cochran, who coauthored the examine. Watching uncooked footage from the examine, I felt each unhappiness and camaraderie with the nameless prosthesis customers. The clips present the clumsiness, miscalculations, and unintended drops which are acquainted to even very skilled prosthetic-hand customers. Typically, the prosthesis merely helps brace an object in opposition to the physique to be dealt with by the opposite hand. Additionally obvious was how a lot time folks spent getting ready their myoelectric prostheses to hold out a process—it ceaselessly took a number of additional seconds to manually or electronically rotate the wrists of their gadgets, line up the thing to seize it good, and work out the grip strategy. The participant who hung a bottle of disinfectant spray on their “hook” hand whereas wiping down a kitchen counter gave the impression to be the one who had all of it found out. Within the examine, prosthetic gadgets had been used on common for less than 19 p.c of all recorded manipulations. Normally, prostheses had been employed in largely nonprehensile actions, with the opposite, “intact” hand doing a lot of the greedy. The examine highlighted huge variations in utilization between these with none...

Crypto News Today: The Next Cryptocurrencies To Make A Big Splash In The Coin Market Fantom Compound And Big Eyes Coins Crypto Mode
Crypto News Today: The Next Cryptocurrencies To Make A Big Splash In The Coin Market – Fantom, Compound, And Big Eyes Coins – Crypto Mode https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-today-the-next-cryptocurrencies-to-make-a-big-splash-in-the-coin-market-fantom-compound-and-big-eyes-coins-crypto-mode/ The coin market is constantly evolving, with new tokens introduced nearly daily. However, only a few of them manage to make the necessary impact. This piece will reveal the crypto tokens that are set to explode the crypto space – Fantom (FTM), Compound (COMP), and Big Eyes (BIG) Fantom (FTM) Fantom is one of the most interesting projects that you will come across in the coin market. Because it was designed to be a direct competitor to Ethereum, it was clear from the onset that this coin had plenty of potentials. When it was released, Fantom was touted as a fast, scalable platform that could support decentralized applications with smart contracts. Fantom was designed to focus on the DeFi world because its developers wanted to create a blockchain similar to Ethereum but could offer more. Ethereum’s blockchain was designed to rely on a proof-of-stake mechanism. Through this mechanism, developers could maintain the efficiency of operations between the blockchain.  Fantom can usually function effectively because an Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant network supports its proof-of-stake system. This network will maintain the platform’s security and ensure everything runs smoothly. Another impressive thing to note about Fantom is that this blockchain is an open-source project. As a result, users and developers can use its code for their purposes. They can also make important changes to the blockchain. You’ll also be thrilled to know that Fantom operates on a leaderless system. This means transactions don’t have to pass through any particular channel to validate. Compound (COMP) The creation of cryptocurrencies gave birth to decentralized protocols. While these DeFi protocols have numerous advantages, one often overlooked is the use of DeFi for banking services. With the release of projects like Compound Finance, the coin market has witnessed the use of blockchain technology for bank-related services. Cryptocurrencies serve as decentralized money. There’s no better way to create a decentralized system than to focus on a blockchain that will enable the transfer of tokens freely without having to deal with any intermediaries. Compound is a blockchain that supports the borrowing and lending of digital assets. In simple terms, Compound allows users to borrow and lend crypto resources to the network.  COMP is the native token of this blockchain system, and it’s used actively in the decision-making process to introduce new policy updates and measures. Users are encouraged to lock their digital assets on the platform, while others may attempt to borrow these locked tokens. It functions similarly to a decentralized bank with no particular control system. There’s no preset interest rate when using Compound Finance. The forces of demand and supply set the interest rate.  Big Eyes (BIG) Big Eyes is relatively different from the other cryptocurrencies on this platform because it doesn’t focus on decentralized applications or finance. Instead, it’s a meme coin with an impressive utility. It represents a step up in the quality of crypto tokens recently introduced to the meme sector. Big Eyes is one of the newest meme coins introduced in the coin market, and it has managed to make a name for itself by adopting a different approach to what we’re used to.  The first interesting thing to note about Big Eyes is that its development team has developed an impressive utility. They plan to develop a cryptocurrency that relies on the latest token ad NFT standards to create a great ecosystem. The developers of this token plan to create support NFTs that will make it to the largest marketplaces and command thousands of dollars worth of value. Iga Swiatek Or Ons Jabeur Who Will Win The 2022 US Open Womens Title? ESPN
Iga Swiatek Or Ons Jabeur Who Will Win The 2022 US Open Womens Title? ESPN
Iga Swiatek Or Ons Jabeur – Who Will Win The 2022 US Open Women’s Title? – ESPN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/iga-swiatek-or-ons-jabeur-who-will-win-the-2022-us-open-womens-title-espn/ On Saturday, No. 1-ranked Iga Swiatek of Poland will take on No. 5 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia. If Jabeur wins, she will become the first African woman in the Open era to earn a Grand Slam singles title. If Swiatek prevails, it will be her third major title, after winning two French Open crowns, in 2020 and earlier this year. So … who will win? We asked our experts: What can Jabeur do to defeat Swiatek? Alexandra Stevenson: Jabeur can do whatever she wants. Her slice game — the extraordinary array of tennis acumen that she shows with her strokes — will decide if she can win tomorrow. Or will the athletic game of Swiatek ultimately take down the slice and dice of Jabeur? Jabeur has been winning with low service percentage. This is a testament to the open door in women’s tennis today. Cliff Drysdale: Jabeur needs to get a very high percentage of first serves in to avoid having her second serve decimated. She also needs to use her drop shots and imaginative game so Swiatek cannot find rhythm. Luke Jensen: Jabeur can be a tremendous disruptor! The multi-layered tactical approach to throw many various spins, paces and the Jabeur signature drop-shots will help her play the match Swiatek does not want to play. Tom Hamilton: If Jabeur is to win this, she needs to do it in straight sets. Twice Swiatek has gone a set down at this year’s US Open, and twice she’s pulled it back to win in three. She’s the master of endurance tennis. So Jabeur needs to put her foot on the accelerator from the get-go — targeting Swiatek with her pinpoint serve (she has 34 aces to date, just four short of tournament-leader Qinwen Zheng who’s clocked up 38, and has also won 73% of points on her first serve when it lands correctly) and not giving her a moment to think or fight back. This will have to be done quickly. Jabeur would have learned from that painful Wimbledon final, where she sprinted into a 6-3 lead, only to lose in three. D’Arcy Maine: Jabeur has been candid about how much she wanted to win the title at Wimbledon, and now, having been so close to a major title before, she has a much better understanding of what she needs to do and what to expect in a Grand Slam final. After her win on Thursday, she said she needs to keep her emotions in check and stick to the game plan her coach sets out for her. If she can do that, and continue the absolute serving clinic she put on against Caroline Garcia (she had eight aces and didn’t face a single break point), a victory will be well within her reach. Aishwarya Kumar: Swiatek has had slow starts throughout this tournament, losing her serve early on (and on two occasions losing the first set). She has lost 16 service games in the last three rounds, depending on her return skills to claw her way back into winning the matches. Jabeur should capitalize on her shaky start, pushing her up and down the court with her slices, her drop shots and her precise angles. Then, once she gets a set up, Jabeur should maintain the pressure early on in the second set, getting free points on her first serve (she landed 34 aces in this tournament) and not allowing Swiatek a chance to break. Swiatek has worked her way out of really difficult situations in the past few rounds, including coming back from a 2-4 break in the third set against Sabalenka, so it would be vital for Jabeur to serve really well against the world No. 1. What can Swiatek do to defeat Jabeur? Stevenson: Swiatek has fought hard to be in the finals. She may be No. 1 — but here at the US Open, she has had to adjust her forehand to get used to the speed of the court with her far-Western grip, and the lighter women’s regular-duty balls. She’s battled well and found the moments to get herself in the finals. Drysdale: Swiatek needs to wait for chances to hit ground-stroke winners. She has been making more errors than usual by hurrying. Jensen: Expect the unexpected. The ability to be laser-focused on identifying the various change-ups Jabeur will throw at her will be key. Maine: It’s been an interesting run for Swiatek. Unlike on clay, her preferred and most dominant surface, there have been moments of struggle on the hardcourt in New York, and she has had more unforced errors than winners in every single match she’s played. But, despite this, what’s been particularly impressive about Swiatek is her mental resolve and her ability to make mid-match adjustments. She doesn’t get overly fazed, even when dropping a set, and that has given her increasing confidence throughout the tournament. This mental strength might end up being her greatest asset against Jabeur’s variety-filled game. She will need to keep finding answers, and rely on her strong returning ability against Jabeur’s powerful serve, if she wants to win her third major title on Saturday. Hamilton: Thankfully Swiatek’s serve returns have been outstanding, and she needs to get hold of Jabeur’s serve early on. If she can counter Jabeur’s serve from the outset, and hold her own, then she’ll make Jabeur uncomfortable. She can also draw on the experience of winning two Grand Slams, including the French Open this year. That experience in an environment like this is invaluable, but she also needs to achieve that perfect balance of trusting her own ability, but also questioning herself enough to motivate herself to fight harder. “Maybe I’m the kind of person who is never going to trust myself. I don’t care,” Swiatek said earlier this week. “It’s not like it’s something negative for me. For sure, having doubts is not nice, but I also find it pretty motivating to actually, you know, try to get better and try to find new skills to get as close to the trust as possible.” Kumar: Swiatek needs to start strong. She can’t afford to lose service games early on — Jabeur is very good at capitalizing on that kind of sloppy game play. Swiatek needs to serve really well early on in the game. Then, she needs to do what she does best: return well. Swiatek broke serve in 35 out of the 50 games she played in New York, which is a 58 percent average. It’s what she excels at. In their last meeting in Rome, she broke Jabeur’s serve five times to win the match in straight sets (6-2 6-2). Jabeur has since improved her service game, so it won’t be that easy, but she is an incredible returner, so she really needs to push Jabeur during her service games. Who do you think will win? Stevenson: For me, Jabeur wins. Her low slice skips off the lightning fast court. If she does this, she will upset the rhythm of Swiatek. Drysdale: Swiatek should win. Her confidence level is rising and she escaped a trap against Sabalenka, giving her a second chance. Jensen: Jabeur is my pick. Swiatek plays very uptight, especially in a pressure-packed match like a major final. Jabeur seems to have learned a great deal from the Wimbledon final in terms of handling the big moment. I know Swiatek has won two majors, but she doesn’t like the balls and can get negative if things are not going well. Hamilton: I think Swiatek will come through to win her second Slam this year. Her record in finals is ridiculous, and if she can tap into that level she achieved to win 37 straight matches earlier in the year, then it’s going to take one monumental effort to topple her. Jabeur obviously has it in her to win on Saturday, but I think Swiatek’s experience will come through and she’ll win in straight sets. Swiatek also doesn’t lose in finals — winning her last 9. Maine: Jabeur. She has been a woman on a mission throughout the fortnight in New York and has been almost clinical en route to the final. Having already played in a Grand Slam final, she knows what emotions she will feel, and, more important, how to handle those feelings. Jabeur beat Swiatek in straight sets during their last meeting on the hardcourt, in Cincinnati in 2021, and is currently brimming with confidence after a statement win over Garcia. It just feels as if momentum is on her side and this is Jabeur’s title to win. Kumar: I said this at the start of the tournament and I will stick with it now: Ons Jabeur. The Jabeur vs. Swiatek rivalry is going to keep us entertained for years to come, so it’s not going to be an easy one for Jabeur (their head-to-head is 2:2). But, she’s having a hot-streak right now, making it to back-to-back Grand Slam finals, and if there’s anybody who can stop Swiatek, it’s Jabeur. The slice, the on-point first serves and the efficient way in which she adapts in tricky situations (coming back from a set down with America’s Shelby Rogers) is going to help her get to that first major trophy come Sunday.

Letters To The Editor – Tolerance, Poll Workers, IWatch Program, Roads, College Football – The Dallas Morning News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/letters-to-the-editor-tolerance-poll-workers-iwatch-program-roads-college-football-the-dallas-morning-news/ Elect free speech defenders It wasn’t that long ago people still defended a person’s First Amendment right to express an idea that is different. We were taught that it’s okay to disapprove of what others say, but we will defend to death their right to say it. Lately, that right seems to have gone out the window. Whether it’s former President Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz, Rep. Chip Roy, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton or a number of other state officials, our leaders have made clear by their behavior and comments that there is a lack of mutual respect and tolerance for different opinions. Wake up, people, and elect leaders who will set the right tone and be an example of what we want our children and grandchildren to admire and model. Jay Trainor, Georgetown Us vs. them Re: “Time to grow up — Sophomoric tantrums aimed at essential workers have got to stop,” Aug. 25 editorial. Thank you, Dallas Morning News, for this excellent editorial. As you state, we are full of bogus ideas and brimming with angst and anger that make people in vital education and governmental services so miserable they want to walk away — and many do. We are at the genesis of a new political and social clime whereby good vs. evil has been replaced by win at all cost vs. lose. Reasoned vs. misguided, debate vs. bullying, acceptance vs. denial and embracement vs. coercion now define our new milieu. Paul Dreimiller, Plano Poll worker worried for safety It’s more than front-line workers who are being harassed. Intolerance seems to be everywhere. I don’t like to admit this, but I am seriously considering not working the upcoming election as an election official in Denton County because of the current climate surrounding elections and those who staff the polls. I am proud of the work we do on election day to help people exercise their right to vote. It’s rewarding and fun to be part of this process. I am confident in the process, the integrity of the election process and those who work the polling places. I am concerned about safety as are others who care about me. Friends and family keep asking me what I’m going to do. I honestly don’t know, and that makes me sad. I do know that everyone has the right to their personal opinions, and while we should stand up for ourselves, it does get a bit scary to do that in our country today. Please register to vote, cast your ballot and be kind to all those who work to make elections happen, which may or may not be me on Nov. 8. Perri Brackett, Lewisville Too little, too late Wow. I promise I don’t live under a rock, but I guess I missed the Chuck Norris promotion of the Texas red-flag law reporting system in 2018. Texas lawmakers don’t call it that. They call it iWatch. It allows people to report suspicious activity or behavior that might lead to adverse or criminal events in schools or anywhere else for that matter. It’s been in place since the Santa Fe shooting in 2018. This June, four years after it was created, Gov. Greg Abbot decided it might be a good idea to raise awareness of the system’s existence after the Robb Elementary shooting. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that a good time to promote awareness would have been after the Santa Fe shooting or the shootings in El Paso or Midland. James Weir, Waxahachie Opt into renewable energy For the last 15 years, I have stopped tons of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere — all without adding any equipment to my house! How? Purchase “100% renewable” electricity. Google to find suppliers and compare. It may cost a little more, but it will be like taking hundreds of cars off the road. This is an easy way to help with global warming! Larry Hamilton, Richardson Phone tip for seniors This is a recommendation to your readers, especially those who are elderly like myself. Every time I am called by someone I don’t know (usually by a marketing rep) and they ask me anything, I tell them I never respond to any personal questions over the phone to someone I don’t know. If it is something I’m interested in, I get on their website for more information. And please remember that Social Security and Medicare never make a phone call to anyone. Neal Douglas Hanebutt, North Richland Hills Where is the money going? I keep hearing Dallas needs money, and it looks like the voters are approving the money, but where is it going? The few roads I travel on are awful. Getting in and out of Dallas Love Field will tear your car up. There is always an escalator out of order there, but they are planting flowers. The streets around some of the largest meeting centers and hotels are awful — I’m talking about the Anatole and Dallas Market Center. The streets around Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center are also awful. The best place to get to with good roads is the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine. Those who fly into DFW International Airport just have to take the shuttle to the Gaylord and never see Dallas. Bobby Pope, Celina New stats for new season Hey, folks, in these modern times expect the following. Prior to the kickoff of a college football game, there will be the usual introductions of starting players. But there may also be something new. Consider this example: “And at tight end is junior Tom Semanski, 6-foot-5, 235 pounds, with a name, image and likeness of $8,500.” Ed Kominski, Weatherford We welcome your thoughts in a letter to the editor. Europe Travel Destinations: Where To Go And What To Do Forbes
Europe Travel Destinations: Where To Go And What To Do Forbes
Europe Travel Destinations: Where To Go And What To Do – Forbes https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/europe-travel-destinations-where-to-go-and-what-to-do-forbes/ Christopher Elliott There may be no more trendy European travel destination this fall than Dubrovnik, Croatia. Its narrow, cobblestone streets and almost perfectly preserved Gothic, Renaissance and late Romanesque buildings continue to draw visitors long after the summer travel season ends. Crowds of visitors shuffle along the old town’s historic esplanade under an unforgiving late-summer sun, ducking into gelato shops and pizzerias to escape the oppressive heat. The bravest among them climb the city wall, which affords a stunning view of a turquoise Adriatic. This year, it feels like summer may never end. At least that’s the assessment of Maris Picunic of the Villa Orabelle, a boutique hotel just outside the city walls. “We’re getting close to where we were in 2019 in terms of visitors,” she says. Since Dubrovnik is so far south, it has a longer season, so there’s still time to match — and maybe even exceed — the 2019 visitor levels. This is part two of a series on fall travel to Europe. Here’s part one with the outlook for fall travel. Graham Carter, founder of the luxury travel operator Unforgettable Croatia, agrees. He says he’s never seen anything like this. “We expect the upcoming season to be much busier than previous fall seasons in Europe, with companies perhaps still struggling to meet ongoing demand,” he told me. Christopher Elliott That’s good news for Croatia’s tourism industry. But for visitors looking for a deal, maybe not. Picunic says prices have come down “a little” from the end of the traditional summer travel season, but Dubrovnik remains one of the most expensive places in Croatia to vacation. Still, with the euro at parity, it is more affordable than it has been in years. A new poll by Medjet suggests Europe is a hot destination this fall and winter. In its survey, 91% of respondents said they intend to travel by the end of this year, and 62% plan to travel internationally. The top region is Europe. But where is everyone going — and where should you go? Once you get there, what should you do? More importantly, how do you find the best deals in Europe? Where is everyone going in Europe this fall? So, where’s everyone going this fall? It depends on who you ask. Demand from U.S. travelers for European vacation homes has more than doubled compared to the same period last year, according to Vrbo. This fall, Paris tops the list of most popular European destinations. It’s followed by Rome, London, Florence, Lisbon and Barcelona. World Nomads Group looked at its policyholders’ destinations and found that Italy, Greece, Croatia and Austria topped the list of European fall destinations. “Travelers are less interested in visiting Spain and Germany,” says Christina Tunnah, general manager of global marketing at World Nomads Group. “There’s also been a slight drop in interest in France as a destination.” Fall bookings to Europe are up 16% from last year, according to Travelport. For the U.K., they rose an eye-popping 70%. In fact, many European destinations were busier than they were in 2019. For the recent Labor Day holiday, Travelport found visits to Italy were up by 8%, Greece by 23%, Portugal by 25% and Turkey by 44%. It’s difficult to gauge where people are going now because fall travel doesn’t usually attract a lot of attention from statistics-gatherers After all, it’s shoulder season — and it’s supposed to be dead quiet. But not this year. Pro tip: I’ve interviewed dozens of travel experts about where to go and what to do in Europe this fall. There’s a consensus that choosing a less popular destination will give you the most bang for the buck. So if the prices in Dubrovnik are too high, go to Split. If Paris is too much, check out Nice. (It’s nice there this time of year.) What to do in Europe this fall Europe is a draw for all kinds of reasons, say experts. Kim Parizek, a travel advisor specializing in Europe, says her clients returning to countries they’ve visited, but not for the same old experiences. “I’m spending a lot more time working with destination suppliers to look for new experiences that are off the beaten path,” she says. “The clients are returning to France or Italy for the fifth and sixth time — but now want to explore new and unique excursions, places to stay and restaurants.” The hope is that they’ll be able to do it without the massive summer crowds that made many European destinations almost unbearable. “Off the beaten path” seems to be a theme. I spoke with several tour operators who said their clients were looking for solitude — and maybe a place where winter doesn’t start too soon. Turkey and southern Spain are particularly appealing. “Weather can still be lovely into November, while the crowds tend to disappear,” says Kelly Torrens, vice president of product for Kensington Tours. But, she adds, “It’s important to pack your patience as you set off on your trip.” That’s always good advice. What are the pros doing? Limor Decter, a travel advisor with Embark Collective, is headed to Sicily in October to enjoy the cultural and natural attractions. She says the hoteliers she’s spoken to are hoping for a quieter fall. “They are looking forward to sharing their hospitality with travelers who patiently waited and avoided the summer of frenzied travel to enjoy a fall visit,” she says. Pro tip: Many Americans have written off COVID in Europe this fall. But that’s a mistake, says Kate Fitzpatrick, regional security director at World Travel Protection. She notes that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still lists the United Kingdom and much of Europe as a “moderate” COVID threat. The CDC advises you to get up to date with your vaccines before traveling to a Level 3 destination. “This means that you have had not only the full initial vaccinations but any boosters for which you’re eligible,” she says. Here’s my free guide to planning a trip. How to get the deals to Europe The sooner you book your fall trip to Europe, the better, according to experts. “My best advice would be to plan and book your trip well in advance to get the best deals for every stop along your preferred itinerary,” says Rajeev Shrivastava, CEO of VisitorsCoverage.com, a travel insurance marketplace. Prices tend to drop for the fall travel season, but airlines have already begun pricing their tickets for the holidays. Prices are all over the map, and you have to look carefully for the best deals. For example, I recently rented a car in Split, Croatia, for a week. On most U.S. travel sites, I couldn’t find anything for less than $600 — not a terrible price. But I found an upgraded car for just $160 when I rented at an off-airport location. Pro tip: If you’re looking for a lower airfare, shoot for the week of October 10, says Expedia. “Average ticket prices are projected to be 20% lower than during summer for international flights,” says Christie Hudson, an Expedia spokeswoman. Ready to visit Europe? Now may be the time to go Despite higher prices and crowds, the fall of 2022 may be one of the best times to visit Europe. The euro is at par with the dollar, which means prices are lower. The crowds have thinned from the frenetic summer travel season. And the weather is cooling off. Even the locals I spoke to in Dubrovnik say the fall weather is here. (“You wouldn’t have wanted to be here in June,” Picunic confided. “It was way too hot.”) Remember, prices will start to rise again as the holiday travel season approaches. And unless you’re lucky enough to be in a place like Portugal’s famous Alentejo region or Cyprus, you’ll need to bundle up.

No Effort Will Be Spared To Strengthen Health Systems Regional Minister Ghana Business News
No Effort Will Be Spared To Strengthen Health Systems – Regional Minister – Ghana Business News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/no-effort-will-be-spared-to-strengthen-health-systems-regional-minister-ghana-business-news/ Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, has assured the people of the government’s commitment to strengthening the health systems of the country for effective and quality healthcare delivery. “No effort will be spared to strengthen the health system and cultivate the enabling environment, where skilled health professionals provide and make the reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health services accessible to all who need it,” he said. The Minister said these in a speech read on his behalf by Ms Juliana Kpedekpo, District Chief Executive for Adaklu, at the launch of the “Zero Tolerance for Maternal Mortality” campaign in Ho, dubbed, “Stop Preventable Maternal Deaths and Disabilities.” The campaign aims at decreasing unintended pregnancies among women and girls through the provision of safe abortion and family planning services to reduce maternal deaths in the country. He said the government would continue to provide the needed infrastructure, equipment, appropriate mix of human resources and incentives to sustain and improve the resilience of the health system to deliver quality care and improved health outcomes, including maternal death. Dr Letsa called for support and collaboration of all and sundry to remove all the barriers and unfair treatments that compel women and girls with unintended pregnancies to dangerous practices that eventually lead to their untimely deaths. The Minister said the death of a mother, whether pregnant or not and irrespective of the cause of death, was a tragedy not only for her family but also for society. “According to the Ghana Health Service, nearly half of pregnancies recorded in Ghana annually were unintended and often lead women and girls to resort to unsafe practices to terminate the fetuses, resulting in life-long complications and deaths sometimes,” he said. He said though abortion-related maternal deaths were highly preventable, issues of stigma, among other social and economic factors, discouraged women from seeking safe techniques for terminating unintended pregnancies. This, he said, called for all hands to be on deck to remove all the barriers and unfair treatments that push women and girls with unwanted pregnancies to premature deaths. Dr Senanu Kwasi Djokoto, Acting Volta Regional Director of Health, said though the country was making significant progress in reducing maternal deaths more had to be done to make the zero-tolerance campaign successful. He commended the government for the agenda 111 project, saying this would increase access to healthcare services and help deal with maternal mortality issues. The Acting Director said for every one million women who delivered in the country, about 900 of them lost their lives as a result of biological and physiological causes, describing the situation as completely unacceptable. Dr Djokoto called on all relevant stakeholders to join the campaign to ensure that women have a safe delivery and to end maternal mortality in the country. The Acting Health Director told Ghana News Agency that in the Volta region, a total of 41 women lost their lives during delivery in 2020 and 35 in 2021. Mama Gbloesi II, the Queen mother of Ziavi-Dzogbe and a Comprehensive Abortion Care Champion, urged pregnant women to endeavour to deliver their babies at health facilities. She said to ensure zero tolerance for maternal deaths, measures were in place to make funds available to support needy pregnant women to have access to health facilities for safe delivery. The Advantages Of A Healthy Lifestyle You Should Know TDPel Media
The Advantages Of A Healthy Lifestyle You Should Know – TDPel Media https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-advantages-of-a-healthy-lifestyle-you-should-know-tdpel-media/ Get this. Adults in America only make up 12% of those with healthy metabolisms. Twelve percent only! Your body’s capacity to maintain appropriate levels of triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference is referred to as metabolic health. Your overall health may be measured using all of these statistics. Your general health will be improved the better these figures are. It must not be beneficial to make the effort to get there if there are so few individuals who are healthy, right? If not, everyone would be performing it! Not so. A healthy lifestyle has many advantages, and incorporating healthy behaviors doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are the best lifestyle changes you can make, along with their advantages and what you can do right away to put them into practice. Eat wholesome foods Although this information is not brand-new, it is nevertheless essential to developing a healthy lifestyle. Almost nothing you accomplish will matter if you don’t eat well. Fueling your body with clean energy is the key to building a healthy lifestyle. Your diet won’t change overnight. However, you may choose better options. Get rid of the junk food first, or at the very least hide it away or in a difficult-to-reach place. You’ll be more inclined to snack on nutritious foods like fruits and veggies if you arrange them in areas that are simple to access. Spend some time each week preparing vegetables so they are simple to eat alone or to add to a recipe. Find fresh things you enjoy eating and attempt a new healthy meal every week. It takes time to change your diet, but every time you opt for health, you’re preparing yourself for a better life. Every Day, Move This also isn’t surprising. You’re aware that you should work out more. What then is stopping you? But the cool part is right here. You may reap the rewards of increased exercise without going to the gym. The healthiest people exercise often throughout the day, not just at the gym. Begin by just moving more. Every hour, set your phone to remind you to get up for three minutes or so. During lunch, go for a stroll—park towards the rear of the lot. Consistently use the stairs. But you should also discover a type of exercise you enjoy. Although cardio and weightlifting are important, exercise shouldn’t seem like a hassle. If you like yoga, dancing, soccer, rock climbing, or anything else that gets you moving, go for it! Additionally, you’ll feel better about yourself, look better, and be more active for longer. Even sadness and anxiety symptoms can be reduced with regular exercise. Schedule Your Sleeping Time Regularly A crucial component of maintaining good health is getting enough sleep. You would awaken and go to bed in accordance with the cycle of the sun. Even if your lifestyle prevents that, you should still establish a consistent bedtime and wake-up time that you adhere to every day. Draw attention to the issues preventing you from sleeping well. If you’re not comfortable, get a better mattress or bed sheets, or get blackout curtains if light keeps you up at night. To sleep better, turn on pink or white noise. Establish a bedtime regimen that will allow your thoughts to rest. Include activities that help your brain relax, such as keeping a journal or putting up a lavender-scented diffuser. Additionally, it’s a good idea to stop using technology an hour prior to bedtime and to stop eating three hours prior. You may increase your attention throughout the day and wake up with more energy if you follow a regular sleep schedule. Additionally, it enhances cognition and reduces inflammation in the body to keep you healthy. Even weight loss is possible with it. Consume A Lot of Water You’re doing it wrong if you’re drinking your calories. Your main beverage should be water, and you should get all your calories from whole foods. Get a favorite water bottle and start taking it everywhere. Get an infuser and add cucumbers, mint, strawberries, or lemon to your water if you don’t like the flavor of it to make it more enjoyable. Just having water handy might frequently encourage you to drink more. Additionally, you may set triggers throughout the day, like as right after waking up or right before a meal, to remind you to drink. Manage Your Life’s Stress You do well with a little stress or a little stress in brief spurts. Chronic stress can cause serious damage. It causes ulcers, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and headaches. Thus, maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires understanding how to manage stress. The two greatest DIY methods for managing stress are often journaling and meditation. Finding a confidant, whether it be a close friend, a member of your family, or a therapist, is also a good idea. It’s a good idea to make time in your life for enjoyment and relaxation. Think about relaxing activities like yoga, painting, hiking, or other hobbies. 6. Create a Powerful Social Circle To maintain a healthy lifestyle, more than just taking care of your body is required. Building a solid social network is the greatest approach to feeding your soul, which is something you also need to accomplish. Spend time with your loved ones, community, and friends. Reestablish contact with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, or sign up for a new organization or club. Try to schedule frequent brunch or coffee dates with friends so that you may get to know your neighbors. Having dependable relationships in your life might help you overcome sadness and loneliness. These folks can push you to live your best life and can help you get through difficult situations. Avoid skipping doctor’s appointments Make sure you go to the dentist and doctor as regularly as advised. ‘Early detection is the key to curing most fatal diseases, and these diseases can’t be discovered early if you never attend the doctor,’ claims the best dentist in Winslow. Make sure you have a future visit with a doctor booked. Regularly see the eye doctor, dentist, and doctor. Make an appointment now if you haven’t in a while. A Healthy Lifestyle Is Worth It Despite the Work Required to Achieve It Living a healthy lifestyle has several advantages. Even while getting there requires effort, the foundations are simple to comprehend and put into practice. The benefits outweigh the work required to develop healthy behaviors. So, use this advice to live a healthy lifestyle and take pleasure in living your best life.

DBS Bank Partners With ‘The Sandbox’ To Create ‘BetterWorld’ Metaverse – Tech Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/dbs-bank-partners-with-the-sandbox-to-create-betterworld-metaverse-tech-times/ John Lopez, Tech Times 09 September 2022, 02:09 pm Singapore’s leading financial institution DBS has partnered with “The Sandbox” to expand its banking experience into the virtual world. A report from The Straits Times tells us that this collaboration is geared toward creating a metaverse platform that “will allow users to experience building a better, more sustainable world.” This virtual world will be called “DBS BetterWorld,” and it is set to be available to everyone for free. The Singaporean bank is the latest company to explore its potential with the metaverse and Web3. DBS Bank is the first bank in Singapore to venture into the metaverse. Meanwhile, “The Sandbox” is one of the biggest free-to-play and play-to-earn blockchain-based games in the market. It functions like a fellow sandbox game, “Roblox,” but features a more decentralized and community-driven game environment. A Tech Times report from January tells us that “The Sandbox” is a dominant player in the “virtual real estate games industry” with over $100 million in investment. DBS Enters The Sandbox Metaverse DBS revealed in a news release that it intends to acquire a 3×3 plot of LAND in the virtual game and that the financial institution plans to develop this virtual property with immersive features. LAND is a type of digital real estate in The Sandbox’s metaverse. On the Ethereum blockchain game, each LAND is valued as a distinct and non-fungible ERC-721 token. Metagamehub tells us that the game determines the worth of each plot of LAND based on several parameters, such as location, visitor traffic, and AI algorithms. The primary goal of LANDs is to let game designers and developers create interesting experiences on them that can be played and monetized by users, as explained by the game’s guide and mechanics. Other utilities, such as renting out LANDs and stake on LANDs, are also accessible within the game. Simply put, LAND situated near properties owned by prominent personalities and organizations is likely to be valued higher because of the potential for better Internet traffic. According to Beyond Games, the most expensive land sale in the metaverse is Republic Realm’s acquisition of around $4.3 million worth of LAND on “The Sandbox” from Atari SA. More About the DBS LAND Purchase According to DBS CEO Piyush Gupta, “Metaverse technology, while still evolving, could also fundamentally change the way banks interact with customers and communities.” The DBS exec also emphasized that the biggest changes in banking came to fruition because of digital advancements. DBS will also look into ways to integrate DBS BetterWorld with LiveBetter, a one-stop digital platform that the bank launched in 2021 to encourage more customers to be more environmentally responsible in modern times. The bank intends for “The Sandbox” DBS BetterWorld to be an additional engagement platform for customer experience. DBS eyes to advance its key services and agenda by providing a platform for visitors to learn more about the Singapore financial institution in the metaverse. Go Back In Time With These Northwest Businesses – Analog Special – KING5.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/go-back-in-time-with-these-northwest-businesses-analog-special-king5-com/ Technology has advanced to do some amazing things, and it certainly won’t stop advancing anytime soon. Despite making our lives easier, it can also be really overwhelming sometimes! We decided to take a break from fancy gadgets and computers and take a look at a few businesses around the Pacific Northwest doing things the old-fashioned way. Grab a bite and explore other worlds at Mox Boarding House in Bellevue In an increasingly digital world, analog tabletop gaming continues to grow in popularity. Mox Boarding House has locations in Bellevue, Seattle, and Portland and is opening a fourth spot in Chandler, Arizona. The multi-purpose game store features retail space with every imaginable tabletop game, places for guests to play, and on-site dining. “Mox is a place that is very much about having a community and building a community,” said manager Ash Rosenbloom. “I think there’s something very unique and very valuable about being able to sit down, clear from distractions and just enjoy a couple of hours or even just one hour with that face time.” Seattle Tailor fuses centuries old traditions with current technology to create one of a kind suits At Sew Generously in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, David Pew is in constant pursuit of perfection.  “They say tailoring is a craft that takes two life times to learn, which I agree with,” Pew explained. “I’m always pushing myself a little harder, always just a little harder.” Pew said when it comes to tailoring, the idea of Bespoke goes beyond what many people think.  “It refers to tailoring that’s done by hand in the old way and using very little machine. There is almost no fusing glue of any kind or anything like that. We use the sewing machines only for the long straight seems and side seems and for the pockets,” Pew shared. “We sew the pockets half by machine and half by hand to get the best of both worlds.” A retail and manufacturing store in Georgetown creates handcrafted, durable kitchenware One of the things you often hear about the “good old days” is that things were made to last. Two Seattle brothers have made the same commitment with their business, Hardmill. Owner Ryan Barrie used to work in a restaurant in college, which helped him realize his love for cooking. He had the idea of making aprons when was looking for a sturdy apron to wear at home but couldn’t find what he was looking for. Ryan brought this idea to his brother, Michael. They teamed up and founded Hardmill four years ago. “A lot of our stuff isn’t really automated machines, it still requires a lot manual input” Michael said. “An old technique that really hasn’t been outmatched.” This Cle Elum oven has never cooled in 112 years The bakers rise early so the dough can, too. “I’ll wake up about 1:15 or 1:30 a.m. and be here by 2:00,” said Nick Osmonovich, a baker at the Cle Elum Bakery. It’s been that way here in central Washington for more than 100 years. The big brick oven at the bakery was first fired up in 1906. If you were to cut the gas supply, it would take days to lose its heat and it never has. Not once in 112 years. “It’s never cooled down,” said Nick’s dad, Ivan Osmonovich, the bakery’s owner. Ivan keeps on cooking, too. He started working here at the age of five. “Cookie tester,” he joked about his earliest job. He took over the bakery when he was 20, just after his father passed away. “We’ve rearranged a few things, but not much,” he said. Free art draws crowds of collectors in Tacoma It happens around sunset one random evening a month. A treasure hunt in the streets of Tacoma. “I think it’s just a cool thing you only find here,” said Joe Vasiliauskas.”Free art basically on telephone poles”. There are crowds gathering on a 6th Avenue sidewalk and people screaming with joy. The cause of all this commotion: limited edition, hand crafted, letterpress posters designed by a guerilla art project, created by graphic designer Lance Kagey and writer Tom Llewellyn. They call themselves Beautiful Angle. “I think we had the original idea that we would be the Banksys of Tacoma, the shepherd fairies that would go out in the dark of night,” Llewellyn said. “It just kind of evolved into its own thing.” KING 5’s Evening celebrates the Northwest. Crypto News Today: Whats Unique About Ethereum Enjin Coin Tamadoge And Big Eyes Coin? Crypto Mode
Crypto News Today: What’s Unique About Ethereum, Enjin Coin, Tamadoge, And Big Eyes Coin? – Crypto Mode https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-today-whats-unique-about-ethereum-enjin-coin-tamadoge-and-big-eyes-coin-crypto-mode/ When it comes to crypto investments, users are often concerned about the utility. No one wants to waste money on a project without any added benefits. While some projects do not necessarily need direct use cases (meme coins), others do. In this regard, we’d be revealing four top tokens and their unique use cases. Let’s start! Ethereum Set The Bar High For Cryptos Everywhere Ethereum(ETH) is a multi-functional blockchain protocol designed to tackle issues not solved by Bitcoin. Ethereum(ETH) is an open-source network that allows developers to build decentralized applications and run smart contracts.  Ethereum(ETH) network supports various projects and protocols, from DeFi to Gaming, to Layer-2 protocols, and much more. Recently, many web3 solutions, NFTs, and DAOs are built on the Ethereum(ETH) network. Plus, Ethereum(ETH) is also a programming language used by large organizations to create distributed applications. Investors are aggressively hoarding Ether—Ethereum(ETH) native token, for its potential future returns. This is because Ether powers every transaction conducted on the Ethereum(ETH) network. So, there’s high daily usage and demand for the token. Little wonder, the network is constantly clogged. Big Eyes Coin – Go Big Or Go Home Big Eyes(BIG) is a beautiful and community-driven meme token. It was created to give people a sense of belonging and happiness and help them discover their inner strength.  The token was created to be peng and different from other meme coins. While other meme coins lean towards the Dog look, Big Eyes(BIG) took a cat look, as cats are beautiful. The anime eyes also make it stand out and resemble a Japanese animation. Lovers of eye-catching objects will fall in love with the meme and enjoy the community. It gets even better as the meme aims to win the most beautiful NFT and popular meme. To foster community bonds, Big Eyes(BIG) will put out educational content and series of events. These events would be positioned to bring authentic hype to the crypto world. There would also be a merch shop where members can cop lovely items. Not to mention the NFT snippets that would be accessible to community members. If you seek a source of strength and a meme or NFT that will make you happy, then purchase Big Eyes(BIG) while it is on presales. Enjin coin(ENJ) Enjin coin(ENJ) is the utility token of the Enjin Platform. You may ask, “what is Enjin?”. Enjin is a platform that allows the creation and purchase of non-fungible tokens(NFTs) that can be used in games. On Enjin, tools are readily available to enable the easy creation of NFTs for purchase and sale. With its unique offerings, it has supported 250,000 gaming communities and handled 20 million users. Some of the tools available on Enjin include Beam, Efinity, Wallet, Multiple SDKs, and wallet. All of these tools support the fast trade of NFTs. To carry out transactions on the platform, developers and buyers use the Enjin coin(ENJ) to access these tools. The token also has a deflationary supply, so the more its usage, the rarer it becomes. Hence, increasing in value. Tamadoge (TAMA) Tamadoge(TAMA) is a meme coin that mirrors dogecoin but with better utility. Tamadoge(TAMA) shares great similarities with the Japanese Tamagotchi game. Tamagotchi means egg watch in Japanese. In this digital game, the owner gets an egg, which hatches into a pet. Then, they have to care for that pet. How they care for the pet determines how the pet would look. Like Tamagotchi, Tamadoge(TAMA) allows users to own pets, which they can breed. These pets are called Tamadoge(TAMA) pets. The beautiful thing about Tamadoge(TAMA) is that pet owners earn rewards with their pets. You purchase these pets from the marketplace, train them into adults, enter arcade competitions, and earn bountiful rewards. The team behind Tamadoge(TAMA) is also creating the Tamaverse—a virtual reality where pet owners can have immersive experiences with their pets. They also intend to partner with other metaverses so that pet owners can play with their pets in those virtual worlds.
