The kit is designed to provide information for people seeking to explore the steps for becoming a citizen, a process which for some immigrants seeking thorough and accurate details about the process can be a challenge, said Katherine Zavala, a member of the library’s Community and User Engagement department. The kit will also be helpful for preparing them in advance of meeting with an immigration attorney, Zavala said, who chairs the library’s Multicultural Services Team and leads the Citizenship & Civics Kit initiative. “Coming from an immigrant family and being the only one born in the states, I remembered when my family, at separate times, became U.S. Naturalized Citizens and how they had to seek out study materials to help them in this process,” said Zavala. The kit contains publications on the rights and responsibilities of immigrants seeking to become a U.S. citizen, quick civic lessons for the naturalization test, flashcards in English and Spanish on naturalization, and a Citizenship Resources at the Library sheet. The checkout period for the kit is three weeks. The launch of the Citizenship & Civics Kit coincides with National Diversity Week observed Oct. 3-7 to raise awareness of how diversity has shaped the country. Founded in 1998, National Diversity Week is officially observed the first full week of October. USA Retains PGA Cup At Foxhills Golf Business News
USA Retains PGA Cup At Foxhills – Golf Business News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/usa-retains-pga-cup-at-foxhills-golf-business-news/ The United States recorded back-to-back PGA Cup victories over the Great Britain & Ireland following a pulsating clash between the two nations at Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey. Led by PGA of America Honorary President Suzy Whaley, the United States overcame a brave fightback from David Russell’s GB & I team to capture the Llandudno International Trophy and claim their first away win since 2009, with the final score being 15.5-10.5 to the visitors. Russell’s side knew they had it all to do heading into the Sunday singles. A weekend full of twists and turns saw them trailing by three points – 9.5-6.5 – knowing seven wins were needed to regain the Llandudno International Trophy. GB&I captain had spoken about the importance of getting some blue on the board in the early stages of the match and Ashley Mansell did just that, racing out of blocks to go three up on Michael Block through after the opening nine holes. Mansell, who is based at Clevedon GC, extended his lead to four with six to play and looked set to earn GB&I their first point of the day. But Block had other ideas, holing five birdies in the final six holes to complete a remarkable turnaround and ensure the first point on the board went to the Americans. Matthew Cort (Beedles Lake) was next out for the home side and was looking to carry the form he showed yesterday on his birthday having won his two fourball and foursome matches. He trailed Ben Polland for much of the match, but a double bogey on the 15th allowed Cort to cut the deficit to just one with three to play. Another bogey by Polland at the 17th set up a tense finale, but both players made par and the match was halved. James Ruth (China Fleet) headed into his contest with Larkin Gross having won one of his three matches so far this week. Having gone one up after the second, Gross reversed the scoreline and the American went to up heading into the back nine, but Ruth showed his quality to fight back and earn the GB&I another half-point. The Americans added to their tally after Simon Thornton (Tulfarris) fell to a 4&3 defeat to Ryan Vermeer, but GB&I got some blue back on the board with Adam Keogh (Woodhall Spa) coming from behind to beat Frank Bensel Jr. It was a bittersweet victory for Keogh, who ended up on the losing team, but remained undefeated on is PGA Cup debut, claiming 3.5 points from four.  GB&I captain DJ Russell “I do feel disappointed,” said Keogh. “The boys gave everything and I’m disappointed to be on the wrong side of the result, but that’s golf. The game was played in the right spirit and congratulations to the opposition. For someone who works in the industry as we all do, it’s an incredible honour playing in this event. We have 8,000 Members so to be one of the 10 players here representing the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland, it’s a good achievement and I would encourage anyone to do the same thing.” Daniel Whitby-Smith (Drayton Park) picked up his first full point of the weekend after beating Wyatt Worthington II 3&2 and Greig Hutcheon (Torphins GC) followed that up with another GB&I victory. At this point in the match GB&I had important points on the board, but the scoreboard was not looking in their favour. Defeats for Simon Lilly (Wellingborough), Paul McKechnie (Braid Hills) and David Higgins (Waterville) followed, which led to joyous celebrations from the visiting team. “We let ourselves down in the foursomes which made it difficult to come back in the singles,” said Russell. “The singles could have gone one way or the other really, at times we were on top but they’re quite a strong team.” Despite the defeat, Russell feels his GB&I team, which contained no fewer than seven debutants, can leave Foxhills with their heads held high having given everything for the cause. Russell continued: “The team have been absolutely amazing. They’ve come together brilliantly, there’s been no individuals within the team. The ten of them have all got together and been brilliant. It really has been a wonderful experience.” Reflecting on the whole PGA Cup experience, Russell added: “I can’t believe how much I have enjoyed it. It’s nice to bring my experience into fruition into something like this. It’s lovely to get the opportunity to do it.” Whaley, the winning captain, who also led the US side to victory in 2019, said: “It started to get a little dicey out there. But in the end, we got it done. I have been lucky to have been able to do a lot of amazing things in my career, but this ranks right at the very top.”

Sports News Roundup: Soccer-French Federation To Review Image Rights Agreement; NFL-Bills Cornerback Jackson Being Evaluated For Neck Injury And More – Devdiscourse https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/sports-news-roundup-soccer-french-federation-to-review-image-rights-agreement-nfl-bills-cornerback-jackson-being-evaluated-for-neck-injury-and-more-devdiscourse/ Following is a summary of current sports news briefs. Soccer-French federation to review image rights agreement The French Football Federation said it will review its agreement on players’ image rights following media reports that striker Kylian Mbappe had refused to take part in sponsor activities. ESPN reported Mbappe refused to participate in a team photo and sponsor activities scheduled for Tuesday because he does not want to endorse some brands, including fast food chains and betting companies, that are under contract with the national team. NFL-Bills cornerback Jackson being evaluated for neck injury Buffalo cornerback Dane Jackson is being evaluated for a neck injury but has full movement in his extremities, the Bills said, after he left the field in an ambulance following a hit in Monday’s game against Tennessee Titans. Jackson was making a tackle on a Titans player just before halftime when team mate Tremaine Edmunds dove in, inadvertently causing a helmet-to-helmet collision that pushed Jackson’s head back. MLB roundup: Mets seal playoff bid behind Max Scherzer Max Scherzer earned his 200th career win by tossing six perfect innings on Monday as the visiting New York Mets clinched a playoff spot by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2. Pete Alonso hit a monstrous three-run homer in the fourth inning to spark the fifth straight win for the Mets, who remained a game ahead of the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The Brewers fell 2 1/2 games behind the idle Philadelphia Phillies in the race for the third and final NL wild-card spot. Cricket-Black Caps tweak 2021 squad for T20 World Cup New Zealand has named a largely settled 15-man party for the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia with Finn Allen and Michael Bracewell the only players who did not feature in the squad that made the final in 2021. Martin Guptill will play in his seventh T20 World Cup and Devon Conway will keep wickets in addition to his batting duties at the tournament, which starts for the Black Caps with a re-run of last year’s final against Australia in Sydney on Oct. 22. Golf-No LIV players but rebel circuit set to dominate Presidents Cup Saudi Arabia has never been part of the Presidents Cup, which every two years pits the best golfers from the United States against the best from the rest of the world — except Europe. But this week at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit will be in the middle of the action, as the feud between it and the PGA Tour continues to escalate, impacting both teams. Doping-WADA still monitoring Russia ahead of the expiration of ban – Banka The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) are still monitoring testing operations in Russia ahead of the decision on whether to reinstate the country, despite complications caused by the Ukraine war, president Witold Banka said on Tuesday. The existing two-year ban from international sport imposed by WADA on Russia for widespread, state-sponsored infringements of doping regulations expires at the end of the year. Cricket-Australia’s Finch wants to carry on an ‘exciting’ T20 journey Australia’s Aaron Finch finds Twenty20 cricket “exciting” and has no immediate plans to quit the format, the 35-year-old said ahead of their three-match series against India on Monday. Australia’s white-ball captain Finch quit one-day cricket after the home series against New Zealand earlier this month following a prolonged run drought in that format. Motor racing-Alonso will challenge Aston Martin – Krack Fernando Alonso has the “speed, hunger, motivation and experience” to help Aston Martin take the next step but things could get difficult if they do not deliver a fast enough car for the former world champion, team boss Mike Krack said. Alonso is set to make the move from Renault-owned Alpine to Aston Martin in 2023 as a replacement for four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who is retiring at the end of the current season. Soccer-Barcelona forecast 274 million euros profit this season Barcelona said it recorded a profit of 98 million euros ($98.27 million) for the 2021-22 financial year and forecast a 274 million euros profit for this season. Barcelona ranks second on Forbes’ list of soccer team valuations with a current value of $5 billion, behind rivals Real Madrid, who are valued at $5.1 billion. The cricket-New batter on strike even if players cross during catch – ICC New batters will come in at the striker’s end after a catching dismissal even if those in the middle had crossed, the International Cricket Council said on Tuesday as it detailed several changes to playing conditions. Crossing allows an incoming player a little more time to get up to speed and could prove crucial in tight contests in limited-overs cricket. (With inputs from agencies.)

Why Is Iran Turning To A New digital Rial? Al Jazeera English
Why Is Iran Turning To A New digital Rial? Al Jazeera English
Why Is Iran Turning To A New ‘digital Rial’? – Al Jazeera English https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/why-is-iran-turning-to-a-new-digital-rial-al-jazeera-english/ Tehran, Iran – A national digital currency is coming to Iran, with the country’s central bank planning to launch a pilot “digital rial” project in the coming days. The central bank digital currency (CBDC), which has also been referred to as the “crypto rial”, is expected to remain pegged at a 1:1 ratio to the rial, the national currency. It is a project officials hope could significantly increase their control over the national currency and its users while offering new opportunities to financial actors. Slapped with harsh United States sanctions imposed after former President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, when cryptocurrency was reaching highs in 2018, some officials in Tehran saw the potential of cryptocurrencies to circumvent sanctions – although that will not be the case with the digital rial, as it will only be used inside Iran’s border. And some of the very same potential alternatives that have gotten proponents excited have led to concerns among members of the local crypto community, who fear the project could endanger privacy and security. The digital rial will run on a platform called Borna, which was developed using Hyperledger Fabric, the open-source enterprise blockchain platform established by US technology giant IBM. It is an approved distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform, which means only the central bank can decide which entities will have access, and also means the currency cannot be mined like Bitcoin and many other decentralised cryptocurrencies. The structure allows a few select banks to maintain and update the network’s distributed ledger, where an immutable record of all transactions and activities is kept. Other entities might also be granted access in the future. Bank users are expected to be able to hand over their rials – either in banknotes or in their accounts – to the banks in exchange for the same amount of the new digital rials that will be stored in their mobile phone wallets. More transparency According to Saeed Khoshbakht, one of the people who worked to develop Borna, the project is unprecedented in Iran and will provide a per cent for further projects in the future. He also said that, even though the project was highly centralised, it would allow for more banks to get involved in the previously mentioned distributed ledger, potentially allowing for more transparency. “For now, at least four more nodes will be designated to handle the distributed ledger. It’s true that they’re also banks, but instead of being focused in a single point, the data will now be placed across at least five points, and that number could gradually grow if the project is successful,” he told Al Jazeera. Financial-technology companies will eventually be expected to offer rial-based financial services online, meaning that a central bank-approved  pegged asset – a rial “stablecoin” – will be necessary. While not included in its initial limited public launch later this month, Borna also foresees a competitive layer, where companies could offer services within the framework of the platform, potentially easing red tape. Khoshbakht added, that if executed correctly, Borna could also create a chance for banks and fintechs to gain access to new fee-based revenue streams, potentially overhauling the current limited fee-based services, which have for years been a thorn in the side of cash-strapped Iranian financial services providers. Lastly, a wide variety of smart contracts, self-executing contracts that can be automatically implemented, could be deployed on the platform, something that has yet to find widespread use across the Iranian economy. Potential dangers Dozens of central banks across the globe are working on their own CBDCs, and the main concern everywhere appears to be their potential impacts on citizens’ privacy. In its draft document, the Iranian central bank acknowledges that privacy is a concern, but also points out that anonymity would add to money-laundering concerns. “Selecting an optimal point between these two components can be one of the considerations in developing the digital rial,” it said, without elaborating. For some members of the local cryptocurrency community, potential violations of their right to privacy are huge concerns. The current local online banking and tax and other online record-keeping systems provide Iranian authorities with enormous supervision capabilities, but a digital rial could further expand and accelerate them, according to Hamed Salehi, a researcher who runs the crypto and blockchain-focused media and events firm BlockDays. “This digital fiat money can be a major step and an additional way toward violating the people’s privacy and social freedoms,” he told Al Jazeera. “For example, during the [November 2019] protests you would lose your internet and phone connectivity if you were in areas where protests were ongoing. Now, what could happen is that in addition to that, the establishment could also restrict or block your money and financial transactions based on your activities.” Salehi also believes that the pervasive nature of malicious software in Iran could mean that hacked phones could be used to attack the digital rial app. Effect on economy The digital rial could end up being linked with efforts to tame Iran’s rampant inflation, which now stands at more than 40 percent. A chief factor behind the country’s runaway inflation for decades has been a lack of financial discipline, resulting in unchecked money printing to help with perennial budget deficits. A digital version of the country’s currency could prove to be an economic opportunity or a threat, according to electronic banking expert Nima Amirshekari. “If implemented correctly, the project can help prevent inflation, only in the digital sector. Inflation comes from money creation, unchecked loans and unbacked money, so if you take away money in circulation and issue the same amount in digital rials, then it can help with inflation, on the condition that you can’t use the digital rial to allocate loans and credits [which would increase the amount of digital rials in circulation].” The central bank Vice Governor for New Technologies, Mehran Mahramian, has indicated that loans are part of the process, telling state television the digital rial could help ensure that loans are invested where they are meant to be. But Amirshekari said the same issues that have caused large amounts of non-performing loans (NPLs), bank loans that have been repaid late or are unlikely to be repaid, another longstanding problem for the Iranian banking system, could affect the digital rial. “Authorities already know where loans go across the banking system. The issue of our NPLs is that they’ve been taken out by people or organisations who are powerful enough that they can refrain from returning the money. The same thing can happen with the digital rial.” Amirshekari said one benefit of the project could be to increase the knowledge and expertise of the central bank on global cryptocurrencies, in turn positively hitting its regulatory stance. A state of lawlessness and confusion has reigned over the local cryptocurrency scene for the past few years. A central bank directive banned credit institutions and currency exchanges from handling crypto in 2018, and there have been crackdowns on crypto exchanges, but technically there has been no law to forbid the average citizen from trading. “I hope it could teach them to employ chain analysis and other technical methods to exert supervision, so they can draft useful regulation instead of outlawing or forbidding everything,” Amirshekari said.

In 2022, the U.S. took steps to formally ratify the agreement. Cyril Ndegeya /AFP via Getty Images Nearly six years after the United States helped negotiate it, the Senate is moving to ratify a global climate treaty that would formally phase down the use of hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, industrial chemicals commonly found in air conditioners and refrigerators, insulating foams and pharmaceutical inhalers. Majority leader Chuck Schumer said the Senate will vote this week to advance the Kigali Amendment, an addition to the Montreal Protocol climate treaty aimed at drastically reducing the global use of the compounds. “HFCs need to be dealt with as soon as possible because they are thousands — thousands — of times more damaging to our atmosphere than carbon dioxide,” Schumer said on the Senate floor last week. These compounds were widely adopted in the 1980s and 1990s to replace another family of chemicals, chlorofluorocarbon, or CFCs, which damage the Earth’s ozone layer. But after the switch, HFCs emerged as some of the most potent greenhouse gases. Successfully phasing out HFCs around the globe could reduce warming by up to 0.5 degrees Celsius (or about 1 degree Fahrenheit) by the end of the century, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. As the world struggles to limit warming this century to 1.5 degrees Celsius to try to avoid several catastrophic tipping points, half a degree can make a major difference, said scientists. The U.S. is already taking steps to eliminate HFCs Reducing HFCs is one area of climate policy where environmentalists, manufacturers and politicians tend to agree. “Stakeholders, from business to environmental groups, have urged the Senate to ratify the strongly bipartisan Kigali Amendment,” said Stephen Yurek, president and CEO of the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, a trade organization. Republicans have supported the phase-down as being good for business, while Democrats and climate activists praise it as good climate policy. The United States was involved in negotiating the terms of the amendment, which was signed in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2016, but never ratified it. More than 130 countries have signed on in some fashion, according to the United Nations. The United States has already taken steps to adhere to provisions of the amendment before actually ratifying it. In December 2020, Congress passed the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act as part of an appropriations bill. It empowers the EPA to enforce a phase-down of 85% of the production and consumption of HFCs over 15 years. Industry groups such as the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy said the AIM Act is important, but that ratifying the amendment was still necessary to make American companies truly competitive. “It’s an enhancement of your market access. These are very competitive industries on a global basis, China being the fiercest,” said executive director Kevin Fay. His group estimated that ratifying the amendment would “increase U.S. manufacturing jobs by 33,000 by 2027, increase exports by $5 billion, reduce imports by nearly $7 billion, and improve the HVACR [Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration] balance of trade,” by guaranteeing that U.S. companies will be adopting standards needed to sell products in countries that already ratified the measure. On the climate side, there is some evidence that commitments to cut back on the use of HFCs are not being followed. A study published in Nature Communications in 2021 found that atmospheric levels of the most potent HFC, HFC-23, should have been much lower than what scientists detected if China and India, countries responsible for manufacturing the majority of the compound that turns into HFC-23, had accurately reported their reductions.

P&W To Open Technology Accelerator In Singapore | News | Flight Global – Flightglobal https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/pw-to-open-technology-accelerator-in-singapore-news-flight-global-flightglobal/ Pratt & Whitney has inked a collaboration agreement with Singapore’s Economic Development Board for the establishment of a technology accelerator in the city state. The facility, which will be located at the Seletar Aerospace Park, will “help to accelerate the development and deployment” of MRO technology projects across a five-year period. It will begin operations at the end of the year. The projects under the accelerator will focus on areas like automation, advanced inspection, connected factory as well as digital twinning, and is expected to be worth at least S$31 million ($22 million). P&W director for aftermarket global operations technology Gilbert Sim says the accelerator “signals just how relevant and important a role technology has played, and continues to play, in the aerospace industry”. He adds: The push for digitalisation is underway across our facilities in Singapore, and the technology accelerator will increase the speed and scalability of these technology projects. The mission of the accelerator nicely aligns with Singapore’s push to digitalise the economy.” Says Lim Tse Yong, senior vice president for conglomerates at the Economic Development Board: “Pratt & Whitney’s investment is testament to Singapore’s position as a leading aerospace hub and strong ecosystem for innovation. We will continue to partner with the aerospace industry to enable the recovery in air travel and its long-term growth.” The enginemaker also states that it is in discussions with another Singapore government agency – the Agency for Science, Technology and Research – on technology innovation in the aerospace sector.

Nature-Based Physical Activity As An Early Intervention For Teenagers – Nursing Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/nature-based-physical-activity-as-an-early-intervention-for-teenagers-nursing-times/ How nature-based group activity such as sea swimming can have a positive effect on the mental health of teenagers Abstract Research suggests that nature-based activities such as sea swimming can have a positive effect on mental health. In this small pilot study, four young people and their parents attended six group sessions for sea swimming instruction and psychoeducation. Emotional wellbeing was assessed using the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5), and all participants reported improved emotional wellbeing. Qualitative feedback suggested that the programme improved confidence, and social and mental health outcomes for participants. This example of innovative practice suggests that nursing in an outdoor setting can be a safe, effective and enjoyable way to target early symptoms of low mood and anxiety in teenagers. Citation: Gardiner C et al (2022) Nature-based physical activity as an early intervention for teenagers. Nursing Times [online]; 118: 10. Authors: Clare Gardiner is SET Outdoors manager, South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (Northern Ireland); Melissa Patterson and David Fee are senior mental health practitioners, Down GP Federation; Maureen McCoy is swimming instructor, FLOW Swimming. This article has been double-blind peer reviewed Scroll down to read the article or download a print-friendly PDF here (if the PDF fails to fully download please try again using a different browser) Introduction The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust’s (SEHSCT) Population Health Strategy (2021-2024) outlines a commitment to creating conditions that enable and support individuals to lead healthy lives, both physically and mentally (SEHSCT, 2021). The trust’s approach to population health focuses on working in collaboration with individuals, communities and partner organisations to address the key factors that affect health inequalities and wellbeing, with one of the three main priority areas being “working in partnership to provide early help to improve people’s wellbeing” (SEHSCT, 2021). SET Outdoors is one of the ‘early help’ actions identified in this strategy. The aim of SET Outdoors is to support SEHSCT children’s services to improve the health, wellbeing and quality of life of vulnerable young people via engagement in purposeful, outdoor, nature-based and/or animal-facilitated therapeutic activities and therapy. Idea for the initiative The Down GP Federation multidisciplinary team, based in County Down, Northern Ireland, aims to provide patients with therapeutic tools and support that will enable them to improve and maintain good mental health and wellbeing. Senior mental health practitioners from the team identified a need among their practice population to engage adolescents who were presenting with low-level anxiety and mood-related difficulties following Covid-19 lockdown restrictions and the resulting isolation from their peers. There was a desire to engage young people in a fun, meaningful and social way to address these difficulties while adhering to Covid-19 guidance and minimising the risk of transmission of the virus. It was decided that these needs could be addressed via collaboration with SET Outdoors on a sea swimming programme, as such outdoor physical activity can have significant benefits. Mitchell (2013) studied physical activity in natural environments and concluded that it was associated with a reduction in the risk of poor mental health to a greater extent than physical activity in other environments. Bélanger et al (2019) reported that spending time outdoors promotes positive mental health among young people through increases in physical activity, and that this benefit would most likely be greater when an interaction with nature was included in the experience. Research has suggested that visiting a ‘blue space’ – such as a river, lake or the coast – for recreation at least once a week can improve mental health (Garrett et al, 2019). Denton and Aranda (2020) interviewed regular sea swimmers; their findings support the concept that sea swimming may contribute to healthy physical and emotional wellbeing. Some professionals and researchers, including van Tulleken et al (2018), have claimed that swimming outdoors can be used as a treatment approach for conditions such as anxiety and depression. “Swimming in the sea really lifted my mood. I really enjoyed the waves and have learnt new skills to keep me safe in the water. I would recommend it to my friends” Method After a process of meeting with various swim instructors, FLOW Swimming was identified as a partner organisation for the project. Task and finish meetings were conducted via an online platform and at the selected beach to together plan the vital elements of the project: research and justification, inclusion and exclusion criteria, risk assessment, session plans, outcome measurement, equipment and budget. Following this a programme overview document was produced. The aim of the project was to improve the emotional wellbeing of the participants, as measured both by the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5) and qualitative feedback. The five-item WHO-5 is among the most widely used questionnaires assessing subjective psychological wellbeing. It consists of five simple and non-invasive questions, tapping into the subjective wellbeing of the respondents. The scale has adequate validity both as a screening tool for depression and as an outcome measure in clinical trials, and has been applied across a wide range of study fields (Topp et al, 2015). Programme objectives identified to help achieve the aim of improving emotional wellbeing are detailed in Box 1. Box 1. Programme objectives Objective 1: To allow young people to access therapy, which is enriched by being experienced in nature Objective 2: To allow young people the opportunity to engage with other adolescents who experience similar mental health symptoms, thus providing opportunities to develop social skills, confidence and peer relationships in a safe, therapeutic environment Objective 3: To promote parent-child interactions, engagement, coregulation and relationships via participation in a fun, social leisure activity Objective 4: To offer parents a chance to interact with other parents of children who are struggling with their mental health and emotional wellbeing Objective 5: To promote healthy attitudes to safety, self-care and relationships via psychoeducation* (Take 5 approach) and therapeutic conversations *Psychoeducation is when the health professional informs the individual about their symptoms, provides motivation for change and offers management strategies and treatment options; it is an important aspect of the treatment process (Ekhtiari et al, 2017) Four young people were recruited to attend the six two-hour sessions with a parent. Some parents elected to join in the swimming activity, while others prepared the fire pit on the beach. Each session incorporated a welcome with a recap of the previous session (where relevant), a safety briefing (including weather conditions and tide, and safe methods of entering and exiting the water), breathing techniques and swimming instruction, a campfire and hot chocolate, as well as therapeutic conversations regarding the Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing approach. Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing is a set of evidence-based public health messages aimed at improving the wellbeing of the population (Belfast Strategic Partnership, 2018). The approach contributes to improving wellbeing both physically and emotionally, so that people feel good and function well. It is based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing developed by the New Economics Foundation in response to research undertaken as part of the Foresight Mental Capital and Wellbeing Project (2008). The mental health practitioners wove the Take 5 approach into each session with the young people. Examples of how this was achieved in practice are outlined in Table 1. Results The WHO-5 questionnaire was completed by the young people before session 1 and after session 6. Each participant reported an improvement in their emotional wellbeing following the group programme; results are displayed in Table 2. When scoring the WHO-5, the total raw score (maximum 25) is multiplied by 4 to calculate a percentage. 100% on the WHO-5 indicates optimal emotional wellbeing, while 0% indicates the complete absence of wellbeing (Child Outcomes Research Consortium, 2022). Participant emotional wellbeing as measured by the WHO-5 improved by 8% for one young person and 20% for another. On average, participants reported a 15% improvement in emotional wellbeing following the sea swimming programme. In addition to the WHO-5 results, young people and their parents provided qualitative feedback. The activities were described by participants as being “great fun”, with confidence and a sense of achievement being a common theme reported by participants. “Swimming in the sea really lifted my mood. I really enjoyed the waves and have learnt new skills to keep me safe in the water. I would recommend it to my friends.” (Young person) One parent and her daughter reported that they now engage in sea swimming on a weekly basis. Parents reported that attending the group improved their relationship with their child; 100% reported that they (and their child) would attend future programmes. “It was a great programme. It helped to distract the children from their worries and anxieties, and showed them that they could push their boundaries. It built resilience and let them try something new.” (Parent) “He only went into the water for a few minutes on the first day and on the last day he stayed in the water for the full time. He was made to believe in himself.” (Pare...

How To Take And Share Photos Responsibly On Your Next Holiday – New Zealand Herald https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-to-take-and-share-photos-responsibly-on-your-next-holiday-new-zealand-herald/ By Jessica Wynne Lockhart 20 Sep, 2022 06:08 AM 5 mins to read When it comes to capturing your travels, make sure you’re considering the ethics of the photos you’re taking. Photo / Getty Images Jessica Wynne Lockhart gives advice on how to take and share photos responsibly on your next holiday. It’s not just about asking permission — it’s also about determining what it is that you want to say. For better or for worse, social media has had a profound effect on where and how we travel. Even as the era of travel influencers seems like it might be drawing to a close (thanks to changing social media algorithms), destinations are still trying to tap into a trend that’s been around long before Instagram: The quest to get that perfect vacation shot. Social media didn’t start it. Neither did selfie sticks. Since the dawn of personal photography, we’ve been lining up to prop up the Tower of Pisa, pinching the top of the Taj Mahal, and walking across the Abbey Road pedestrian crossing. So, we’re not exactly new here. Yet, travel photography continues to be fraught with countless examples of bad behaviour, from flying drones where it’s prohibited to taking smiling selfies at Holocaust memorials. It’s reached the point where some hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions are beginning to limit photography, and in some cases, outright ban it. So, how exactly can you take “responsible” photos on your next holiday — and why does it even matter? The first ethical dilemma many travellers face is whether to request permission from their subjects. Ask and risk losing the moment. Don’t ask and you might risk violating someone’s boundaries. For award-winning Kiwi photographer and adventurer Mark Watson, it’s not even a question: consent is a must. He suggests making eye contact with your subject and gesturing your intent by lifting your camera. And, as a bonus, the act of asking for permission may result in a cross-cultural exchange you might not otherwise have had. “As a photographer, you’ll often have an emotional response to something that you’ve seen,” he says. “But it’s important to check yourself and respect the local people.” But for Tracey Scott, who was named New Zealand Travel Photographer of the Year in 2021 and 2022 by New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP), it’s a bit more nuanced than that. “Everyone has their own moral compass,” says Scott, who describes her shooting style as “organic”. However, she agrees there are situations when requesting permission is non-negotiable. “In Ethiopia, I always asked permission, as it’s believed that when you photograph someone, you’re taking part of them,” she explains. Being respectful shouldn’t just apply to people though — it should also apply to the environments you’re travelling through. While Watson does include geotags of the remote locations he’s visited on social media posts (a controversial practice, as critics suggest it can lead to over-tourism), he adheres to Leave No Trace principles. “It’s good to slow down and think, ‘Okay, this is pristine desert. Am I making footprints that are going to be here for 20 years?'” he says, noting the problem isn’t the number of people lining up to take photos in a fragile environment — the problem is how they act once they’re there. “It’s about respecting the environment, respecting local people, and thinking about the bigger picture,” he says. Finally, what you do with your photos once you get home is just as critical as the act of taking them. Regardless of whether you’re just sharing your photos on social media or in a family album, it’s important to consider the story you’re telling. Did you post only pictures of people in traditional costumes — but not in modern clothing? Did you only share pictures of children with flies on their faces, but not those same children attending a well-furnished school? You could be guilty of both perpetuating stereotypes and creating poverty porn. “There’s a fine line between a genuine interest in others’ cultures and exoticising people for your own benefit,” says Nicola Bailey, an Australian photographer and the photo editor for Adventure.com. “As a Westerner, there’s the risk that you’re setting people — often in developing countries — apart as ‘different,’ rather than highlighting similarities that you may share. You’re not only reinforcing stereotypes but also reaffirming the notion that the customs of the West are right and that others are, in some way, more backward.” Captions matter, too. In a former life, I worked for a volunteer-sending organisation, where part of my job was to monitor volunteers’ social media channels. Hands-down, the expression that still makes me cringe is “#TIA”, which stands for “This is Africa” — as though the world’s second-largest continent could be neatly summarised in a three-character hashtag. (My second-least favourite caption? “The people had nothing, but were so happy and generous.”) If what you’re sharing seems over-simplified and one-dimensional, it probably is. “Photography generally shapes how people see the world and so when we share photos, we are influencing how others perceive the world too,” says Bailey. “When sharing a photo and communicating about it, the rule of thumb is quite simply to represent all people with dignity and respect.”

Rise In Business Insolvencies “reflects Challenges Ahead” | North West Business News – Insider Media https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/rise-in-business-insolvencies-reflects-challenges-ahead-north-west-business-news-insider-media/ A rise in the number of business insolvencies reflects the continued toll that economic turbulence is taking on businesses, according to insolvency and restructuring trade body R3.  The latest insolvency statistics show there were 1,933 corporate insolvencies in August – 43 per cent higher than in August last year and 42 per cent more than in August 2019. The figure was also 5.5 per cent up from July this year. Allan Cadman, who is North West chair of the insolvency and restructuring trade body R3, said the increase had mainly been caused by an rise in the number of Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidations, a process in which directors close their company voluntarily.  “The figures suggest that directors remain concerned about their ability to continue to trade in the current climate, and are choosing to close their businesses before that choice is taken away from them,” he said. “These figures will be a sobering reminder to government of the scale of the challenge facing the UK economy as we head into the winter months, and reflect the continued toll the sustained economic turbulence is taking on businesses.” He added: “Companies are facing enormous running cost hikes just as household spending is facing its biggest squeeze in several decades which delivers yet another blow to business owners who were hoping to bounce back to normal trading levels post-pandemic. “Many directors and managers are worried about the rise in prices and energy costs and the effect these will have on their margins and profits, and this is set to continue to be a concern.”

The humid, wet, and damp conditions during the rainy season make it perfect for the growth and multiplication of various fungi. So, fungal infection woes are common during monsoons. Most skin problems are not life-threatening but the unwillingness to visit a dermatologist will only increase the risk and severity of the condition. In an Instagram video, dermatologist Dr. Kiran Sethi highlights three fungal conditions people might face in the inner thighs during the monsoon season. She also shares tips to prevent and treat them. 1. Frictional rash The dermatologist explains that it looks a bit darker when the skin is infected with a frictional rash. This rash isn’t itchy and is not caused by a fungus, but it often gets mistaken for fungus. She suggests keeping the area dry and preventing sweat from accumulating around the inner thighs. 2. Intertrigo This inflammatory skin condition is caused by skin-to-skin friction, which only gets intensified by heat and moisture during the monsoons. Yeasts like candida are formed which makes the skin appear red and itchy. Expert advises using an anti-fungal cream, twice a day to treat this fungal infection. 3. Tinea Corporis According to Dr. Kiran Sethi, Tinea Corporis is a proper fungal infection, which appears as round rashes, has a sharp border, and is really itchy. She says that anti-fungal cream, twice a day, is recommended for its treatment, and sometimes tablets too. In case of rashes or discolouration in the inner thighs, Dr. Kiran Sethi advises people to consult a doctor for appropriate treatment. She also pens down quick tips for preventing such fungal infections: 1. Keep the area dry 2. Reduce friction 3. Wear sweat-wicking fabrics 4. Make sure you change after you sweat 5. Use talc-free powder to keep the area dry and healthy. Do let us know if these tips were helpful. Disclaimer: This content including advice provides generic information only. Facebook Beware: The Metaverse Is Flat The Washington Post
Facebook, Beware: The Metaverse Is Flat – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/facebook-beware-the-metaverse-is-flat-the-washington-post/ In a few weeks’ time, Mark Zuckerberg will announce a new virtual reality headset from Meta Platforms Inc. Embarrassingly, we already know what it will look like. A video of the purported device has been doing the rounds online after someone found one in a hotel room. Yet none of that should matter because whizzy VR headsets are becoming too much of a distraction, and aren’t that integral to the early growth of the so-called metaverse, a 3D version of the internet that many see as its next chapter. It turns out flat screens are doing the job just fine.  While Facebook has sold about 14 million VR headsets to date, millions more have visited the metaverse through regular 2D screens like the one you’re looking at right now, via apps like Roblox and Epic Games Inc.’s Fortnite. The trend is likely to continue for several years yet as VR headsets take time to slim down in size and price. That puts Zuckerberg in an awkward position. He wants you to buy Meta’s headset, known as the Quest, because that gives him greater control over whatever metaverse marketplace he builds down the line. And the reason is clear: For years he’s been beholden to the rules of app gatekeepers Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Apple Inc., paying their fees and following edicts such as the App Tracking Transparency prompt that will knock about $14 million off Facebook’s ad sales this year. It would be a painful, almost unthinkable step for Facebook to make its metaverse platform Horizon Worlds available on app stores. But perhaps there is another way. Facebook could allow people to visit the platform via a simple browser. Google’s Stadia uses a service called cloud-streaming that lets people play large video games via Chrome. It’s an expensive process, requiring powerful servers, but it could help Facebook circumvent Apple and Google while drumming up a flood of curious new users. Meta’s technology chief Andrew Bosworth hinted on Twitter earlier this year that a web-based version was in the cards, but a company spokeswoman declined to provide further details. “It’d be a 3D version of Facebook that looks like a game, but you’d browse it from your desktop,” said Sam Huber, CEO of metaverse property startup LandVault. “It could become the most popular game in the world.” Even modest popularity would reassure investors who are likely to balk at how slowly the company’s headset customers are growing: A mere 300,000 people have visited Horizon Worlds since it launched last October. You can only access the platform via a Quest 2 headset. “Facebook seems to be operating from a sunk cost fallacy,” said Wagner James Au, an author and blogger who has covered the metaverse for more than a decade. “There’s no data to support VR headsets as being the mass market device.”   In fact, flat versions of the metaverse are far more popular than 3D ones. About three-quarters of Roblox’s 52 million daily visitors are on a phone, while the vast majority of people using Microsoft Corp.’s Minecraft or Fortnite are on a desktop computer or mobile. Several metaverse companies have also pivoted to flat. Decentraland, for instance, a virtual world for trading crypto assets, was marketed as a “virtual reality platform” when it launched its initial coin offering in 2017. Yet all its users have since been visiting via a desktop or browser, the company says. VRChat, a platform for socializing with other avatars, was first released as an app for Oculus headsets in 2014. Three years later it produced a desktop version, and was able to attract millions more users. “The issue is price,” said Artur Sychov, the founder of metaverse startup Somnium Space, whose users mostly visit on a browser. Meta’s Quest 2 costs about $400, while other rival headsets can exceed $800. Going into a virtual world on a screen is actually a decent proxy for “real” VR and certainly more engaging than a regular video call, as I discovered when Sychov took me on a tour of the Somnium universe during our Zoom meeting. Since I wasn’t technically with him as an avatar, Sychov held a virtual tablet in front of him with a “camera” that let me follow his movements around the space. Watching him point to art in a virtual gallery and moving through colorful forests, even on my laptop screen, was enough to help me imagine myself being there. Until now, Meta’s marketing has focused on the immersive benefits of VR headsets, creating the feeling that you’re really with work colleagues or inside a fitness class. But that misses the true selling point of the metaverse — incentives to create new experiences — and you don’t need a VR headset for that. To lure more people into its virtual platforms, Meta needs to focus less on building cutting-edge headsets, and more on emulating metaverse pioneers like Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft. Almost a quarter of Roblox’s own users have created millions of games for the platform, producing a marketplace for commerce as well as fun. Nearly all its content is user-generated, just like TikTok or YouTube, and that is a big part of its attraction. Zuckerberg similarly must turn his metaverse into a place where creators can thrive. Facebook’s current push to test tools for creators feels late, given how far ahead the other pioneers are. Concentrating too much on immersive tech is putting the cart before the horse. Meta needs to make its metaverse both accessible and an attractive place for creators. Going “flat” would be a good start. Pacific Islands A Key U.S. Military Buffer To China’s Ambitions – Report – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/pacific-islands-a-key-u-s-military-buffer-to-chinas-ambitions-report-reuters/ U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s plane makes its landing approach on Pohnpei International Airport in Kolonia, Federated States of Micronesia August 5, 2019. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com SYDNEY, Sept 20 (Reuters) – China sees the Pacific islands as an area of significant strategic interest and the United States should strengthen its commitment to north Pacific island states, now in talks to renew a defence compact, to maintain a vital military buffer, a report released Tuesday by a U.S. Congress-funded think tank said. China had made progress in the Pacific on geostrategic goals it has been unable to achieve elsewhere, said the report for the United States Institute for Peace, whose co-authors include former senior military officials. This was cause for concern but not alarm, the report added, saying the U.S. should bolster support for island states in the north Pacific where it had the strongest historical ties. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The report comes ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and a dozen Pacific island leaders next week, as Washington seeks to compete for influence with Beijing. read more The Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Palau are sovereign nations known as Freely Associated States (FAS), after signing compacts in the late 1980s that give the U.S. defence responsibility and the right to military bases. The compacts, which expire in 2023 and 2024, are being renegotiated, and the report warned that these states could look to China for funding if negotiations fail. “The vast FAS territorial seas, which span much of the northern Pacific, are an important strategic buffer between U.S. defense assets in Guam and Hawaii and East Asian littoral waters,” said the report, whose authors include Philip Davidson, a former commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and David Stilwell, a former U.S. assistant secretary of state. If Beijing were to succeed in bringing one of these states into its sphere, “it would imperil U.S. military capabilities in a strategically vital geographic command area and open the door to a broader reordering of regional architecture with implications well beyond the Pacific region,” it said. A U.S. missile defence test range in the Marshall Islands is critical to U.S. space and missile-defense capabilities, it added. Across the Pacific region, China is seeking to enhance its access to ports and Exclusive Economic Zones, frustrate efforts by the United States to project military power, increase intelligence gathering and surveillance capabilities, reduce Taiwan’s diplomatic partners, and promote the Chinese model of political and economic development, the report said. “China views the Pacific Islands as an area of significant strategic interest,” it said. Washington needs to provide an alternative to Chinese economic assistance to “counter Beijing’s efforts to capitalize on regional perceptions of neglect and abandonment”. More resources were needed to monitor China’s increasing activity in the FAS, where Chinese research vessels with “military utility” have been spotted without permission. The Federated States of Micronesia recently agreed to develop new U.S. military facilities, and Palau requested the U.S. build airstrips, ports and bases, which “Washington should consider seriously to the extent that it aligns with defense needs,” the report said. Daimler Trucks Shifts Battery Strategy To Avoid Competition With Cars Automotive News Europe
Daimler Trucks Shifts Battery Strategy To Avoid Competition With Cars Automotive News Europe
Daimler Trucks Shifts Battery Strategy To Avoid Competition With Cars – Automotive News Europe https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/daimler-trucks-shifts-battery-strategy-to-avoid-competition-with-cars-automotive-news-europe/ HANOVER, Germany — Daimler Trucks is migrating its battery chemistry to a formula that eliminates nickel and cobalt to improve durability and reduce competition with the passenger car business for scarce materials. Daimler will gradually move its vehicles to lithium iron phosphate batteries it has developed in partnership with China’s CATL. Iron and phosphate cost far less and are easier to mine than other battery materials. “They are both cheap and plentiful almost everywhere and will definitely help to reduce the pressure on the battery supply chain as adoption grows,” said Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst with Guidehouse Insights. Daimler, the German parent of Freightliner and Western Star truck brands, announced the strategy as it debuted a longer-haul electric truck for the European market at IAA Transportation 2022 on Monday. “My fear is if the entire passenger car market, not just Tesla or the high-end cars, moves to batteries, there will be a fight,” Martin Daum, Daimler Truck’s CEO, told Automotive News. “And a fight always means higher pricing.” Eliminating nickel and cobalt, the rarest elements going into vehicle batteries, reduces the cost, he said. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells cost about 30 percent less than nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells, according to BloombergNEF. “The much lower cost, superior durability and safety make LFP a very appealing prospect for many use cases, especially commercial vehicles,” Abuelsamid said. Freightliner and other Daimler brands now use NMC chemistry that relies on lithium and manganese in addition to nickel and cobalt. Energy density a focal point Much of the passenger car industry will stick to NMC chemistry that uses nickel and cobalt because those batteries have greater energy density. That allows for greater range in a small vehicle, Daum said. Still, there is some movement even among passenger car makers to LFP batteries, Abuelsamid said, especially entry-level models. Tesla, for example, is starting to use LFP technology for some vehicles it manufactures in China. “We expect that LFP will probably account for at least one-third of the EV battery market in the second half of the decade as most manufacturers adopt for at least some applications,” Abuelsamid said. Besides Tesla, Volvo and Ford plan to incorporate LFP batteries into some of their vehicles. Daum said the technology makes good sense for large commercial vehicles like electric Freightliners. The trucks have enough space for larger batteries that compensate for the lower energy density of LFP chemistry. Technology advances may further narrow the gap. An expected shift in cell-to-pack architectures will eliminate the modular structure in batteries and help overcome the reduced energy density of LFP chemistry, Abuelsamid said. That’s because the new design doubles the amount of active energy-storing material in a battery pack to 70 percent to 80 percent, he explained. According to Daum, LFP also offers better longevity because it doesn’t suffer the same level of degradation after thousands of cycles. Many in the industry consider LFP batteries safer because they operate at a lower temperature and are less likely to catch fire. Strategies defined by segment Batteries are starting to divide along multiple technology pathways by vehicle segment, said Nathan Niese, an electrification expert and partner with Boston Consulting Group. Premium vehicles will offer the latest-generation high-nickel batteries that push boundaries on battery innovation, he said. Mid-level vehicles will use high-nickel or LFP chemistries that focus on fast recharging, while entry-level vehicles will come equipped with LFP or sodium-ion chemistries that value cost competitiveness over vehicle range. The massive scale of the passenger vehicle market and its advantage as the first mover create sourcing challenges for later entrants such as commercial vehicle manufacturers, Niese said. Daimler’s change in battery strategy comes as it unveils the Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros Long Haul Class 8 truck. The truck will have the new LFP batteries when it goes into production in 2024. Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz Trucks, said it would have a range of about 483 km (300 miles). Although Daimler plans to sell the eActros in Europe, its batteries and other technology will appear in a future eCascadia model, Daum said. “We are looking for maximum commonality on all platforms,” he said.

Six Itineraries Changed For Carnival Ship Due To Unexpected Issue Cruise Hive
Six Itineraries Changed For Carnival Ship Due To Unexpected Issue Cruise Hive
Six Itineraries Changed For Carnival Ship Due To Unexpected Issue – Cruise Hive https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/six-itineraries-changed-for-carnival-ship-due-to-unexpected-issue-cruise-hive/ In an email sent to booked guests, Carnival Cruise Line has announced the need to adjust six upcoming itineraries for Carnival Vista. The changes impact alternating Western Caribbean sailings from mid-October through mid-November, and again from mid-January through mid-February. Work Schedule Requires Itinerary Change Due to cruising speed reductions necessary for onboard maintenance, Carnival Vista‘s itinerary will be changed for six upcoming sailings. The ship’s 2022 departures on October 15, October 29, and November 12, are affected, as well as 2023 departures on January 21, February 4, and February 18. “We have had to implement a work schedule to address an unexpected issue on Carnival Vista and will be conducting maintenance on the ship during your cruise, which means the ship will be unable to sustain the maximum cruising speed required to operate your itinerary,” the email reads. Photo Credit: JHVEPhoto / Shutterstock Each of the impacted 2022 itineraries is a 7-night roundtrip Western Caribbean cruise from Galveston. The original schedules featured two days at sea, followed by visits to Montego Bay, Jamaica; Grand Cayman, the Cayman Islands; and Cozumel, Mexico. The schedule was to conclude with another day at sea before arriving back in Galveston. The 2023 departures are similar, with the ship following the same route but visiting Falmouth, Jamaica, instead of Montego Bay. Now, all six itineraries have been changed, and will no longer call on either Grand Cayman or Jamaica. Instead, the ship will stay much further west, substituting Belize and Roatan (Honduras) as alternative ports of call. The ship’s stay in Cozumel will also be lengthened. The exact port times have not been announced, nor have any changes to the ship’s departure or arrival times to Galveston been indicated. “We regret not being able to deliver the original itinerary and apologize for the unexpected change,” the email reads. Compensation Offered Because of the extent of the change, Carnival Cruise Line is offering impacted guests $50 per person (up to $100 per stateroom) of onboard credit, which will be posted to guests’ Sail & Sign accounts for the cruise. Photo Credit: Drake McLemore / Shutterstock.com All pre-booked shore excursions booked through Carnival for both Jamaica and Grand Turk will also be fully refunded to the original form of payment, and all port fees will be adjusted as necessary to account for the itinerary changes. If guests no longer wish to sail on Carnival Vista with the revised itinerary, they may also reschedule their sailing or cancel their cruise vacation and request a refund. Such changes must be made no later than September 26, 2022. Refunds may take up to three weeks to process through guests’ financial institutions. Why the Change? Other than “maintenance” that impacts the 133,500-gross-ton ship’s maximum cruising speed, no details have been provided on the nature of the work that needs to be done to Carnival Vista. As the speed is affected, it is likely the maintenance is related to the ship’s engines or directly connected engineering or navigational systems. Hotel operations, food and beverage service, and entertainment options are unlikely to be affected, and the guest experience onboard will remain the same. Photo Copyright: Cruise Hive The itinerary change still permits the ship to sail a 7-night itinerary, but without covering as much distance. The sailing distance along a typical cruise ship route from Galveston to Jamaica, for instance, is roughly 1,400 miles (2,253 kilometers), while Galveston to Honduras is just 1,180 miles (1,900 km). This can permit the ship to sail at slower speeds necessary for safer engineering work. Carnival Vista first entered service in 2016, and has a history of engine and propulsion issues. Earlier this year, the ship had technical issues that canceled Grand Cayman and altered Jamaica port times on the same itinerary as the now altered future sailings. The ship also had propulsion issues that necessitated an unscheduled dry dock in 2019. The two other ships in the Vista class, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama, have also had their share of propulsion issues resulting in canceled cruises, itinerary changes, and slower cruising speeds.

Living Donor | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/living-donor-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ Submitted photo Dave Bianco, left, and his son, David, are all smiles following successful liver transplant surgery on Aug. 3 in Cleveland. The son, 33, was a donor to his father, 63. CANFIELD — Dave Bianco, 63, of Canfield, received a life-saving liver transplant last month. The donor — his son, David, 33. Bianco is walking unassisted, in good spirits and progressing well. He said his son gave him a new lease on life, literally. “There was an outpouring of potential donors, however one stood out, my son David — my hero. Through the grace of God, he was a perfect match and wanted to do this for me in the worst way. It was all worth it.” DIAGNOSIS The elder Bianco has worked for 40 years with Industrial Waste Control and Ground Tech Inc., both of Youngstown. He was on a job site in Missouri when his heart went out of rhythm. Bianco flew home. His general practitioner sent him to the hospital, where it was discovered that his thyroid was overactive. At the same time, the medical staff discovered abnormalities in his liver enzymes. His gastrointestinal doctor sent Bianco to the Cleveland Clinic, where he was diagnosed with cancer of the liver. Bianco said he asked his gastrointestinal doctor what they were going to do. The answer: “Nothing. We need the cancer to grow.” It wasn’t large enough yet to get him on the list for a transplant. Testing took place over the next four months to see if son David, also of Canfield, was a compatible donor. “There was a huge time crunch after my father’s cancer diagnosis,” David said. “If the cancer progressed too quickly, my father would have been taken off the list for a donor.” However, they also needed the cancer to grow large enough for his father to be put on the list for a transplant. “It was a balancing act and a huge timing issue. There was a lot of waiting,” David said. Within two months, the tumor grew to the optimal size, which allowed his father to be put on the transplant list. WAITING FOR WORD Over three days at the Cleveland Clinic, David underwent a variety of procedures to discover if he could be his father’s living donor. The testing involved taking 50 vials of blood, undergoing an MRI, having a CT scan and finally a needle biopsy of the liver, which gave the doctors the necessary core sample. When the testing was finished, his donor advocate, Katey Hellickson, informed David that he was an acceptable donor for his father. “I was out biking when I received the news, and I was elated, very happy,” David said. “I was nervous up until the point of knowing I would be a perfect match.” The doctors told David to train like he was in a marathon to be in the best shape possible for the surgery, “so I biked 14 miles every day.” His father said, “My son never slowed down through the whole process.” SURGERY The liver transplant was scheduled for Aug. 3. David’s surgery lasted seven hours while his father’s surgery took 14. The surgeons extracted 40 percent of David’s liver, the entire left lobe, which is the ideal piece to take. The liver is the only organ in the body that is capable of regrowing and will regrow in 16 weeks to 90 percent in both the donor and the recipient. The elder Bianco said his surgical team was incredible. It included surgeons, hepatologist, doctoral fellows, residents and professional assistants. Following the surgery, members of his team visited him every day to observe how he was progressing. Son David came home in six days while his father was home in 17 days. Dave’s daughter, JoVanna, took a leave of absence from her job in Columbus to be her brother’s caregiver during his hospitalization. Dave’s wife, JoAnn, has been her husband’s caregiver through the entire journey. She was the driver for both her husband and her son. “I know the Cleveland Clinic like the back of my hand,” she said. Dave said, “She never left my side for the entire 17 days I was in the clinic.” David returned to working remotely at his job for Berk Enterprises of Warren four weeks following surgery. Dave should be able to return to working remotely at around eight weeks following surgery. “The support shown by my friends and family locally, nationally and worldwide has been overwhelming,” Dave said. “I did not realize how many people my life has impacted over the years and the relationships I have developed. If not through my faith in God and the trust I put in him, I would not have been able to do this. “Thanks friends and family for all the prayers and support. Without you I could not have done this,” he said. TRANSPLANTS Dr. Koji Hashimoto, director of liver transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic, was one of the surgeons who operated on Bianco. “Dave Bianco’s surgery was a success; he did very well,” Hashimoto said. There are two types of liver transplants, he said. The first is referred to as the deceased organ transplant, when the liver is taken from someone who died and is transplanted into a patient with liver failure. The second is the living donor transplant, in which a portion of the liver is taken from a healthy living donor and transplanted into a recipient. A living donor increases the chances for patients who need a transplant to receive it. “There are 14,000 people listed every year on the National Liver Transplant list. Many people are waiting,” Hashimoto said. Caroline Auger, media representative at the Cleveland Clinic, said that in 2021, the Clinic’s liver transplant program was the largest in the United States. In 2021, the clinic’s liver transplant program in Ohio completed 210 liver transplants, which is the highest number in the history of the program. Also in 2021, the hospital’s main campus completed 33 living-donor liver transplants, which were done laparoscopically. The clinic is one of the few hospitals in the world to offer that minimally invasive procedure, which is performed with small incisions. FUTURE What are they looking forward to getting back to? David said he wants to get back on his bicycle and ride, while his father said he just wants to drive and “do what I want to do.” “I have a 33-year-old liver in me, I feel good and can’t wait to get to rehab and back to my normal life,” he said. Beavers Play To 0-0 Draw | News, Sports, Jobs – The Review https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/beavers-play-to-0-0-draw-news-sports-jobs-the-review/ WEIRTON, W.Va. — Beaver Local controlled the ball against Weir, but the Beavers were unable to find the back for the net. The Beavers outshot the Red Riders, 14-2, but neither team was able to score as the match ended in 0-0 tie Monday night on Weir’s Senior Night at Jimmy Carey Stadium. “They dominated,” first-year Weir (4-4-4) head coach Chris LeFever said. “They dominated on offense. We could not create opportunities. Their defense was good too. We had a tough time creating opportunities. “Our goalie played a great game. My MVP tonight was Wansack. “Mike Iafrate also did a great job. He did a great job in the middle. He got a lot of steals, and he helped us transition to offense. “Beaver Local has some strong guys. They are a tough team.” Beaver Local had many chances to score, but the Beavers had multiple shots go just wide or over the goal. “We created a lot of opportunities,” Beaver Local (3-3-2) head coach Joseph Zirillo said. “We have worked on scoring. We were right there, but we could not get one into the back of the net.” John Wansack made six saves in goal for the boys from Hancock County. Dante Sorge stopped one shot for the boys from Columbiana County. The visitors had a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. “I saw some video of them,” LeFever said about the Beavers. “I knew they had good size. I didn’t realize how much size they had. “They played a lot of through balls. Our center backs did a great job. Ben Howard and Alex Orris really did a great job.” Beaver Local’s offensive pressure resulted in Weir having to take 13 goal kicks. The Beavers took just two. “I knew they were going to be a challenging team,” Zirillo said about the Red Riders. “They started off hot. They are struggling a little bit now, but they have played tough competition. “We held them defensively. We just could not find the back of the net.” The Red-and-White took four corner kicks, while the Red-and-Black took two. “The season has been going well,” Zirillo said. “We have a relatively young team. We have had some growing pains. “They want to see each other succeed. They are working hard. They are very positive.” The Red Riders played defense for a good bit of the match. “We did not score Saturday against Indian Creek,” LeFever said. “We are struggling. We do not play again until Saturday, so I have a bunch of practice time coming up. It’s long overdue.” Both teams pushed forward late trying to score, but neither team was able to get a shot into the net. “It is a combination of things,” LeFever said about his team’s recent offensive struggles. “Early on in the season, we are able to create better scoring opportunities. “Lately, we have not been creating great opportunities. We also have not been shooting well. We will be working on that at practice.” Weir started each half with its seniors on the field. “It is our Senior Night,” LeFever said. “Our seniors started each half on the field. They worked hard. Some of the seniors were in different roles. They did a fantastic job. Mike Iafrate and Alex Orris were the biggest factors along with Wansack.” The game was Weir’s final one before the cutoff to qualify for the annual OVAC Tournament. Thursday is the cutoff day for the soccer tournament. The top four teams in Class 4A qualify for the tournament. Entering play Monday, Indian Creek was in first place, followed by Beaver Local and St. Clairsville. Weir is in fourth place, while East Liverpool is fifth in the standings. Beaver Local is scheduled to play Cambridge at 5:30 p.m. today on the road. Weir is slated to play Wheeling Central at 2 p.m. Saturday on the road. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Why Grey Goose Is Pouring More Marketing Dollars Into Metaverse Digiday
Why Grey Goose Is Pouring More Marketing Dollars Into Metaverse – Digiday https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/why-grey-goose-is-pouring-more-marketing-dollars-into-metaverse-digiday/ Vodka brand Grey Goose is taking its experiential marketing up a notch with virtual experiences. Specifically, the Bacardi-owned brand is leaning into the metaverse, most recently for an activation with the US Open Tennis Championships. Earlier this month, Grey Goose created an immersive experience on metaverse platform Decentraland for the US Open in which visitors learned about the US Open’s signature cocktail, the Honey Deuce. The activation also featured an interactive display that allowed visitors to toast the players. “We were eager to meet our consumers in this space,” Grey Goose vp Aleco Azqueta said of bringing the brand to the metaverse. “The US Open was the most natural tie-in for our brand, given its connection to sports and gaming.” Using events like the US Open to build its metaverse marketing strategy allows Grey Goose to create new programming to attract its target demographic and stand out to sport fans and alcohol drinkers. To develop its virtual activation, Grey Goose enlisted Razorfish, an interactive agency specializing in web development, media planning and buying, technology and innovation. For the US Open activation, Grey Goose wanted its virtual experience to draw a strong connection with how consumers engage with its brand in real life. To achieve this, Grey Goose set up interactive games and challenges to give visitors a chance to win a variety of prizes, including limited edition wearables, merchandise and tickets to the Grey Goose suite at next year’s US Open. Grey Goose previously experimented with metaverse marketing as part of the brand’s partnership with Peter Dundas at the Grammy Awards, which included limited-edition NFTs and a martini-shaped bag created by Grey Goose and Peter Dundas for Paris Hilton. With the US Open activation, “this is our first fully interactive digital world we’ve built” and Grey Goose is looking to “continue exploring Web3 capabilities in the months and years to come,” Azqueta said. It’s unclear how much of Grey Goose’s advertising budget is allocated to this campaign in the metaverse, as Azqueta would not share overall budget specifics. However, he did share that the vast majority of their ad spend (70%) has been on digital channels, with social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounting for 26% of the brand’s total spend. According to Pathmatics data, Grey Goose spent a little over $4.1 million so far this year on advertising efforts. Grey Goose’s US Open marketing strategy hinges on cementing a bond between the tournament and the brand. Grey Goose and the US Open have a long-standing partnership, which began in 2007, through which Grey Goose wants to increase its cultural presence and boost brand awareness. As part of its metaverse marketing strategy, Grey Goose has been offering limited-edition wearables in a MetaVIP Lounge that have consistently sold out, Azqueta said, with 26,000 downloaded just one week into the US Open tournament. “This is why we’re exploring activities across NYC and the metaverse,” said Azqueta. On top of its US Open activation, Grey Goose continued a push into delivery services and at-home cocktails. For example, in New York, Brooklyn and Manhattan residents could have pre-made, chilled Honey Deuce cocktails delivered by Cocktail Courier. “Grey Goose has hit a home run with the Honey Deuce, because they continually evolve it,” said Damian Areyan, vp and group director of lifestyle marketing and partnerships at integrated media, digital and communications agency Team One. “Home delivery cocktails, a frozen version, a cocktail kit, cocktail recipes across social media, they use the US Open to drive awareness for their entire portfolio. They’re also using this time to make the Honey Deuce an online cultural moment for the US Open.” In the coming years, marketing in the metaverse may move from experimental to standard for major brands, as adoption of the space grows. “Grey Goose and the US Open benefit significantly because not only does the partnership enhance the fan experience, it’s become iconic in its own right,” said Bob Lynch, founder and CEO of sponsorships intelligence platform SponsorUnited. “The expansion of this partnership allows both the US Open and Grey Goose to reach cultural influencers in music, fashion and sports who are digitally connected.” Why Grey Goose is pouring more marketing dollars into metaverse

Get Ready To Discover The Importance Of Using Aluminum Enclosures For Electronics – Digital Journal https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/get-ready-to-discover-the-importance-of-using-aluminum-enclosures-for-electronics-digital-journal/ For the safety of our electrical gadgets, enclosures are used. This makes it possible to protect our electronic equipment from adverse weather, corrosion, rust, and damage. Because they may or may not improve the operating quality of the equipment within, enclosures are essential to its operation. It contains all of the cables, switches, and other electrical components in one location. Our electrical gadgets’ protection is often taken for granted, which reduces the device’s lifespan. Investing in the greatest enclosure that won’t interfere with any of the electrical device’s operations is one approach to assure its endurance. These are the three primary functions of an electronic enclosures. One of the key objectives of aluminum enclosures  for electronics is to prevent water ingress. Individuals who are looking forward to getting this benefit should think about going for an enclosure that is rated for IP68 waterproof. These electronic enclosures are sometimes used outside since they provide the greatest level of water ingress protection, IP68. They are susceptible to floods since they are exposed to extreme weather, therefore it’s a good thing our product can withstand some water immersion. The second most important benefit that can be obtained out of aluminum enclosures for electronics is to provide protection against extreme heat. Extreme temperature exposure increases the risk of electronic equipment being damaged. After overheating, the majority of our electronic equipment slow down. Aluminum enclosures include heat sinks that enable the airflow of the electronics to cool down. Additionally, metal enclosures are efficient heat dissipators that prevent overheating of devices. Moreover, aluminum enclosures for electronics can provide an extra layer of protection and security against risks, dents, and damages as well.  Nothing is more crucial than making sure that electrical wires and tapes don’t come into contact with our bodies since an exposed wire poses a risk of shock. All of these cables and tapes are kept organized, confined, and safe from shock threats by enclosures. However, compared to metal enclosures, plastic enclosures reduce the possibility of shock dangers. After discussing the many uses for enclosures, let’s move on to the various forms of electronic enclosures. To ensure that the component of the project box suits its functionality, it must be properly picked. Plastic and metal are the two major materials used for electronic enclosures. Comparatively less expensive and lighter than metal boxes are plastic enclosures. It guarantees that the electrical gadgets within cannot hurt the human when touched because of its nonconductivity. The ABS Plastic enclosure, a more durable thermoplastic, is an example of a plastic enclosure.Stainless steel or aluminum are often used in metal enclosures or metal boxes. Although it costs more than plastic enclosures, be confident that the investment is worthwhile. Since metal enclosures are more enduring, they can support the device’s weight and RF shielding. While taking a look at the best aluminum enclosures for electronics available in the market, it is important to settle down with the best option out of them. Disgraced Crypto Founder Says He’s Not On The Run. But No One Knows Where He Is. – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/disgraced-crypto-founder-says-hes-not-on-the-run-but-no-one-knows-where-he-is-the-washington-post/ The person most closely associated with last spring’s crypto crash appears to be on the run after an arrest warrant was issued for him — and investigators have asked for Interpol’s help to track him down. Do Kwon, the South Korean developer of the TerraUSD and Luna cryptocurrencies, is believed to have been in Singapore since at least the spring, when those coins lost nearly all of their value. But Singapore authorities said this weekend he is no longer there, and South Korean investigators have reportedly asked Interpol to issue a “red notice” that would allow officers in member countries to provisionally arrest Kwon pending extradition if they find him. Last Wednesday the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors Office issued an arrest warrant for Kwon and five other people who worked on both the currencies and Terraform Labs, the company that Kwon co-founded. Prosecutors did not list the charges, but investors have said he defrauded them in promoting the coins. TerraUSD — which used a computer program that claimed to peg its value to the U.S. dollar — and a related token known as Luna both took off in the past year, with each multiplying in value dozens of times over before crashing in May. A Terra spokesman did not reply to a request for comment. Kwon also did not reply to a request for comment. He said on Twitter Sunday that “We are in the process of defending ourselves in multiple jurisdictions – we have held ourselves to an extremely high bar of integrity, and look forward to clarifying the truth over the next few months.” The red-notice request was originally reported by the Financial Times. The Kwon case is being watched closely as a sign of how aggressively law enforcement will pursue those engaged in allegedly illegal activities in the crypto space. Last month the Treasury Department issued sanctions on Tornado Cash, which helps anonymize crypto transactions, in a strong example of a crackdown on tech-based financial tools. But the pursuit of individuals in crypto is much rarer, and Kwon’s case could be a bellwether for how other projects that lost large sums of value could be targeted in the courts — and if, eventually, some investors might claw their money back. The 31-year-old Kwon graduated from Stanford University and briefly worked at Apple before returning to his home country several years ago to found a number of crypto projects, including Luna. Before the spring crash, Kwon was hailed as a visionary and even attracted a cult of everyday fans known as “Lunatics.” Nor was it just retail traders — Terraform also raised money from respective financiers such as Silicon Valley VC firm Lightspeed Venture Partners. But in May a quick sell-off began for still-unclear reasons, prompting the loss of more than $40 billion in value, according to analysis firm Elliptic, as the price of Luna plunged to nearly zero and TerraUSD went from $1 to $0.11. The collapse helped trigger a broader crypto crash that affected dozens of other assets and companies. Bitcoin has gone from nearly $40,000 to under $20,000 since the Terra collapse, and the total market value of crypto has plummeted by more than a trillion dollars in just a few months. Kwon made an attempt to relaunch Luna shortly after, to the outrage of many investors. Law-enforcement experts said that they believed prosecution of the entrepreneur was possible but challenging given the vagaries of crypto, with the line in the industry between fraud and risky investment often blurry. “If someone walks into a bank and holds it up for a lot of money with a videotape of the whole thing, well that’s a pretty clear-cut case,” said William Callahan III, a former Drug Enforcement Administration special agent who now serves as director of government and strategic affairs for a crypto company called the Blockchain Intelligence Group. “Investigating and prosecuting something like this requires a much more unique set of skills.” He said the case against Kwon would likely turn on whether it can be proved he knowingly misled investors in stumping for the coins or was mounting a good-faith campaign for a risky-but-legal-venture. Some evidence gathered by South Korean investigators so far, according to local media, includes allegations that Kwon and other Terraform executives decided to close their South Korea offices just a week before the currencies crashed. Kwon has said the shuttering was long in the works. On Sunday the pursuit of Kwon took a surreal social-media turn when Kwon, outspoken on Twitter, took to the platform to deny he is a fugitive. “I am not ‘on the run’ or anything similar – for any government agency that has shown interest to communicate, we are in full cooperation and we don’t have anything to hide,” he posted. But the Seoul prosecutors quickly denied it. He is “obviously on the run,” the office said in a statement, according to local news media agency Yonhap. Kwon quipped that he would only give away his coordinates if “1) we are friends, 2) we have plans to meet 3) we are involved in a gps based web3 game.”

Seoul officials have said the law may violate a bilateral free trade agreement, and they have asked Washington to postpone the new rules until Hyundai completes building its Georgia factory in 2025. Yoon is likely to reiterate that request during the upcoming summit. A number of high-level South Korean officials have been mobilised in recent weeks to relay concerns to their U.S. counterparts and press for exemptions, though solutions are far from clear. Trade Minister Lee Chang-yang will travel to the United States this week to discuss the IRA, the ministry said on Tuesday. Yoon has also been struggling to make headway on other key diplomatic and security issues such as improving relations with Japan and enticing North Korea back to denuclearisation talks. Yoon’s office said he plans to hold his first bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in New York, though some Japanese media reports suggested the meeting may not happen as legal fights over historic disputes remain unresolved. read more South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin met with his Japanese counterpart in New York on Monday, where he asked the Japanese to work together with Seoul to resolve their differences, Park’s office said in a statement. According to a senior official at Yoon’s office, the president also plans to use his speech to the U.N. General Assembly to reiterate the need for North Korea’s denuclearisation, with Pyongyang rejecting Seoul’s recent overtures and talks remaining stalled. A diplomatic source told Reuters that Seoul and Washington are exploring how to reopen denuclearisation talks. “Our responses to the North’s recent moves have been low profile, which is intended in order to not give the level of attention they want,” the source said, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue. “But we’re sending a clear message that another nuclear test would trigger real repercussions, even harsher than the biting resolutions and measures taken after the sixth test and long-range missile launches.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Hyonhee Shin; Editing by Josh Smith, Ana Nicolaci da Costa and Lincoln Feast Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Good-Loop is a certified net carbon negative business.   “IAS has been a leader in our industry for many years, helping to educate and equip our industry for an era of safer, more effective media buying,” said Amy Williams, CEO and founder, Good-Loop. “In fact it’s a company I took a lot of inspiration from when I was establishing my own business. I’m genuinely thrilled to partner with such a pioneering, forward-thinking company, as we work together to drive the industry forwards once again. Together, our integrated Green Media solution will empower advertisers across the world to put their net zero commitments into action and to make a real, lasting change for generations to come.”  Sanofi, the global healthcare brand, and Omnicom Media Group (OMG), the leading media services provider, will take part in the testing of carbon emissions tracking developed by IAS and Good-Loop. “Sanofi’s Consumer Healthcare business will look to challenge all activities across the marketing supply chain in line with our objective to build the road to carbon Neutrality by 2030,” said Prasad Ghag, Global Head Media, Digital & Strategic Planning, Sanofi. “The carbon tracking tool beta test along with IAS and Good-loop will be our starting point to understand carbon emissions levels through our media activities and will be key in designing future actions in media to contribute to our broader carbon reduction targets.” OMG is the global media agency, responsible for media planning and buying across Sanofi’s consumer healthcare brands. “At OMG, sustainability is a priority and we take our collective responsibility to care for the planet seriously. We are pioneering solutions to help measure and ultimately reduce carbon emissions related to media activity, and are proud to support Sanofi on their equally ambitious journey,” said Charlotte Baxter, Global Digital and Operations Lead, OMG. Furthermore, earlier this year, IAS committed to the Vista Climate Pledge along with the Vista Equity Partners portfolio of companies. The pledge includes IAS measuring its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reducing emissions annually.  About Integral Ad Science Integral Ad Science (IAS) is a global leader in digital media quality.
