Boxing Live Results, Highlights For Deontay Wilder Vs. Robert Helenius, Devin Haney Vs. George Kambosos 2 – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/boxing-live-results-highlights-for-deontay-wilder-vs-robert-helenius-devin-haney-vs-george-kambosos-2-cbs-sports/ Two big boxing cards are set to go down on Saturday night, with some of boxing’s best talent in action. The night will kick off with a card headlined by Deontay Wilder’s return to the ring for the first time since losing back-to-back fights to Tyson Fury. Wilder will battle Robert Helenius in a battle of hard-hitting heavyweights (9 p.m., FOX PPV). Helenius is riding a three-fight winning streak, including a pair of big upset victories over Adam Kownacki. He faces a tall task in battling one of the hardest punchers in boxing history. Wilder has 41 knockouts in 42 career victories. The action then will shift to a rematch for the undisputed lightweight championship when Devin Haney defends his four world titles against former champion George Kambosos Jr. (10:30 p.m., ESPN). Kambosos lost the undisputed championship to Haney in June but activated his rematch clause to bring Haney back to Australia for a chance to win the titles back. Can’t get enough boxing and MMA? CBS Sports will be with you throughout the entire way on Saturday for both events, so be sure to follow along with the live results and highlights below.  Results, highlights Devin Haney (c) vs. George Kambosos Jr., undisputed lightweight titles Deontay Wilder vs. Robert Helenius, heavyweights Caleb Plant def. Anthony Dirrell via ninth-round knockout Pinned Devin Haney (c) vs. George Kambosos Jr. — Round 12: Haney clinched several times to smother Kambosos trying to press forward. Haney cracked with a right hand and Kambosos continued to try to come forward. Haney just completely avoided any desperation offense from Kambosos, cruising to the final bell and clearly deserving a wide decision win. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Haney (119-109 Haney) See New Posts Pinned Pinned In his first fight since back-to-back losses to Tyson Fury, all it took was one round and one punch for Deontay Wilder to finish Robert Helenius.  Pinned Pinned The fight is over! Deontay Wilder is back.  Pinned R1: One clean punch may be all it will take to win this round in the final 30 seconds. Big right counter knocks Helenius cold! Pinned R1: Wilder lands a right hand and gets shoved into the ropes by Helenius.  Pinned R1: Helenius lands a straight right. Wilder continues to circle away in a very slow opening frame. Pinned ROUND 1: Wilder jabs to the body early. Both fighters start very slow and tense.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Helenius, a former sparring partner of Wilder, enters the fight on a three-bout win streak including back-to-back KOs of Adam Kownacki.  Pinned Both heavyweights are in the ring. Michael Griffin will be the referee.  Pinned It’s main event time in the PBC on Fox PPV from Brooklyn, New York. It’s time for the return of Deontay Wilder as he welcomes fellow towering slugger Robert Helenius.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Official result: Devin Haney def. George Kambosos via unanimous decision (119-109, 118-110, 118-110) to retain the undisputed lightweight championship Pinned Pinned Devin Haney (c) vs. George Kambosos Jr. — Round 11: 34-1 punches landed advantage for Haney in the previous round according to ESPN. Haney rocked Kambosos with a sweeping hook that sent Kambosos stumbling backward briefly. Another crushing right landed for Haney in the final 30 seconds of the fight before Kambosos landed one right hand. Kambosos just can not do enough in any round to compete. He needs a miracle in the final round. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Haney (109-100 Haney) Pinned Devin Haney (c) vs. George Kambosos Jr. — Round 10: Haney caught Kambosos in the middle range again early and landed some heavy right hands and left hooks, seeming like he wanted to end the fight. Another big right landed for Haney and Kambosos looked like he was starting to get hesitant to engage again. Kambosos, bleeding heavily from the cut over his eye, did land one good right hand late but spent nearly the entire round getting busted up by Haney’s big power attack. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Haney (99-91 Haney) Pinned Over on Fox PPV, Caleb Plant just flattened Anthony Dirrell with a vicious left hook to score a nasty knockout. Dirrell was struggling to stand up after being attended to by medical personnel. Hell of a bounce-back win for “Sweet Hands” after his loss to Canelo Alvarez in November. Pinned Pinned Devin Haney (c) vs. George Kambosos Jr. — Round 9: Kambosos landed another good right hand early before Haney fired off two jabs. Haney is cut over his left eye and Kambosos has responded with some fire. Haney went bak to the jab in an attempt to reassert control of the range. Kambosos landed another big right hand and Haney landed a right and clinched immediately. Kambosos also suffered a cut over his eye. Haney landed some very good shots as both men began to jaw at each other. A wild round but Haney likely still edged it. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Haney (89-82 Haney) Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Devin Haney (c) vs. George Kambosos Jr. — Round 8: Kambosos continued to not throw punches, getting hit with seemingly anything Haney felt like throwing. One left hook did land for Kambosos but then he was right back in mid-range, getting picked apart with ease by Haney. Kambosos landed a good right late in the round that got Haney’s attention. That punch sparked a little something in Kambosos as he turned up the pressure in the final moments of the round. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Haney (79-73 Haney) Pinned Pinned Devin Haney (c) vs. George Kambosos Jr. — Round 7: The lead left hooks from Haney were landing with regularity early and then the right hands began to follow. Kambosos was doing a lot of posturing and fidgeting but not really connecting with any meaningful punches. Kambosos’ hooks were coming in too wide and too slow, allowing Haney to easily duck under the strike. This is dominant from Haney. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Haney (69-64 Haney) See More

Imagine The Web Pointed Cameras Back At You. That’s What The Metaverse Will Be Like – Biometric Update https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/imagine-the-web-pointed-cameras-back-at-you-thats-what-the-metaverse-will-be-like-biometric-update/ Fans or skeptics, people considering the metaverse seem to be realizing for the first time that some of their biometric identifiers will be needed for participation. News and analysis of metaverse business models lately point out what should have been obvious a decade ago when investments into to the new mirror world picked up speed. It will always be a buzzkill to have to type a logon and password before or after slipping on a headset. Like having to ride a horse to get the keys for a car. Every (legless) step of the way to life in the metaverse is going to require the recording of one biometric identifier or another. Logging on, buying and selling anything, dating, attending business meetings – if passwords are not being typed, biometrics will fill the void. It is true that there might be trusted entities that vouch for one’s identity. Maybe people in the metaverse will have digitally represented payment and ID cards, for instance. Or Apple will transplant its model for alleviating its customers of their need to use most passwords. But in every case, anyone hoping to have a full life while wearing opaque goggles while sitting in a coffee shop, will have to surrender their voice, face, iris and/or fingerprint to someone else. And there is no reason to stop there. Heartbeats, breath, ear canal structure, anything biometric can and someday will be ID currency. It is fascinating to see venerable tech culture and business magazine Wired write with a note of alarm about how Facebook’s father organization Meta Platforms plans to put five cameras in a future headset. Those sensors will not be looking outward, warning wearers that they have wondered onto a real freeway. They will be watching eyes and expressions to transfer that data to an avatar. Holding that information milliseconds to make avatars more interesting is long enough to analyze, make predictions, sell and, of course, steal. What is fascinating about Wired’s big take here is that it is the only magazine in the world purpose built at the inception of the internet age. No one has been fawning over/warning about cyberspace as long as its editors have (and in more insufferable fonts and colors). Now there are misgivings. Wired’s not alone. Time, one of the United States’ oldest surviving news and culture publication, reports qualms, too. And The Information, launched in 2013 to dig out deep tech industry stories, this month published a piece noting that Apple is expected to launch its line of virtual reality headsets and content next year with iris scanners for ID verification. Other than selling headsets, this is not new ground for Apple. Recent iPhones scan either fingerprints or faces and compare the data to biometrics that users store beforehand. To Apple’s credit, the initial scans are stored on the devices and not on the cloud, a common practice that can introduce significant drawbacks in terms of personal privacy. And, in theory, it means Apple cannot make money by selling identifiers. Trade publication Pymnts rounds out the recent coverage, noting that retail investment management firm Charles Schwab instructs customers calling in to repeat a sentence. At the time of writing the article, the publication reported, the verbal passcode was “At Schwab, your voice is your password.” Extra points for turning voice biometric security into marketing. No points for predicting that Schwab will be allowing its customers to order trades at a company metaverse office with little more than a cough. It is good that that the community is looking at a metaverse future more soberly than people did during the early woolly days of the internet. But more questions need asking. If a company like Apple can permanently (more or less) verify someone once they enter the metaverse, making repeated verifications by others less likely, who prevents biometric identifiers from being harvested when a person walks (assuming) into a corporate metaverse area? Even if anonymized, facial identifiers and displayed emotions are going to be a hard sell for some. There are plenty of entrepreneurs and academics who say notions of privacy are naïve and antiquated. If so, does entrance to the metaverse, even today, amount to giving up common concepts about privacy? For-profit technology companies are not invested in anything but producing more profit for shareholders. Practices today bend to pressures tomorrow. Wired noted that almost exactly a year ago, Facebook said it was erasing the face biometrics that it had collected from its 1 billion subscribers. Now, Meta says its Quest Pro headset will have those cameras. Biometrics-derived money is too tempting to pass up. Former Morgan Stanley CEO: Crypto Could Become ‘a Huge Way’ That Monetary Transactions Take Place – Featured Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/former-morgan-stanley-ceo-crypto-could-become-a-huge-way-that-monetary-transactions-take-place-featured-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack has confirmed that he still owns bitcoin. While admitting that it is hard for him to understand why crypto has value, the former executive believes that 50 years from now, crypto could be “a huge way that monetary transactions take place.” Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack on Bitcoin and Crypto Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack talked about bitcoin and cryptocurrency in an interview with CNBC Thursday. Mack was the CEO of the global investment bank from June 2005 to January 2010. Responding to a question about whether he currently owns bitcoin, he confirmed: “I do. Yes.” He further shared: Through my family office, we have some outright positions in crypto. The former Morgan Stanley executive also discussed whether Wall Street will become completely digitized in the future. “I don’t think it goes away but I think it changes dramatically,” he said. “Take crypto, it’s hard for me to understand why it has value,” Mack continued, adding: Fifty years from now maybe that will be a huge way that monetary transactions take place. It’s easy to wire. You don’t have to worry about putting in a bank. It’s on a computer. The former Morgan Stanley executive opined: “You gotta make sure it’s insulated, protected, and no one can break into it. Fifty years from now, I think things will be even more electronic and driven more and more by input from humans in the computers on how to trade, how to take risks, and make sure they don’t go over their limits.” Mack has been investing in crypto for many years. In July 2017, he told Bloomberg while discussing his investment in crypto startup Omega One: “I have been watching and investing in the cryptocurrency market over the last several years.” Regarding Omega One, he said at the time that he finds the company “to be an important next step in the emergence of this new economy … making crypto assets cheaper and easier to access.” What do you think about the comments by former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack? The Last Of Us Fan Shares Gorgeous Astronaut Ellie Tattoo – GameRant https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-last-of-us-fan-shares-gorgeous-astronaut-ellie-tattoo-gamerant/ A fan of The Last of Us shares their beautiful tattoo of Ellie wearing an astronaut helmet inspired by a touching moment from The Last of Us 2. A fan of The Last of Us shared a gorgeous astronaut Ellie tattoo. Ellie’s infatuation with the world prior to the infection represents one of the more wholesome characteristics of The Last of Us, which includes her love of outer space. The Last of Us has inspired all kinds of fan creations, such as a life-like Clicker mask from one fan, and illustrations that celebrate moments from the game’s story. Even so, nothing is as permanent as a tattoo to showcase one’s adoration, especially one that is as breathtaking as this one. Fans getting tattoos inspired by this series is not new, such as an incredible The Last of Us Clicker tattoo, or one that pays homage to the giraffe scene. This specific tattoo is more like the latter, in the sense that it reflects the wholesome elements of the series and characters in a way that fans can appreciate. Crossikki shared a photo of their Last of Us tattoo of Ellie wearing an astronaut helmet on Reddit. The tattoo is in a black and white minimalist illustrative style, shaded with stippling to highlight details like Ellie’s backpack and wrinkles in her jeans. Fans can also spot a Firefly symbol on Ellie’s astronaut helmet, which can be interpreted in different ways considering Ellie’s relationship with the Fireflies in the first and second games. The great thing about tattoos like this one is that they’re mostly only recognizable to the fan-base. Because of that, it is presented as both a meaningful moment to connect players to the game and a breathtaking piece of art that newcomers can enjoy, and potentially even entice them to play. Ellie herself sports a tattoo in The Last of Us 2 that could inspire players in the same way, and the Last of Us tattoo was used for a PS5. In The Last of Us 2, there is a flashback chapter of Joel leading Ellie to an abandoned museum on her birthday, showcasing Ellie’s excitement and child-like innocence when interacting with different exhibits on dinosaurs, history, and space. The tattoo is inspired by a specific moment where Joel surprises Ellie with a replica spaceship, an astronaut helmet, and a cassette tape that Ellie used to imagine herself as an astronaut taking off for space. This iconic moment has inspired not only tattoos but also beautiful The Last of Us illustrations that reflect what is so great about the seriES, and why it has touched so many. The Last of Us Part 1 is available on PS5 and coming to PC. MORE: What God of War Can Learn From The Last of Us’ Character Swapping

The Régie De Courances: A Royal Family-Friendly Cottage 1 Hour From Paris – Forbes https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-regie-de-courances-a-royal-family-friendly-cottage-1-hour-from-paris-forbes/ Alexis Armanet Head to the Essone département in the Ile de France region close to the Gâtinais forest, and find a picture-perfect landscape of green fields dotted with pretty rural towns and villages, and one of France’s most well maintained castles, the Château de Courances. Still lived in by its current owner, the handsome 17th century castle is the stuff of dreams. Think tall winding iron gates, an elegant double stone staircase leading up to the main floors, honey hued stone exterior coiffed by a light slate roof and surrounded by acres of magnificent gardens. © Eric Sander Upscale French self-catering rentals company Pierres d’Histoire has made it possible to have Courances all to yourself for a few days by renting out the former estate manager’s home to guests. The Régie de Courances, a two-floor cottage with all the trimmings — including high chairs and cots, and toys for the little ones — sits at the entrance of the castle grounds and gives guests a taste of chateau life. Pull back the velvet drapes in the morning and you’ll be charmed by the daylight filtering through tall swaying chestnut trees that line the long driveway to the castle. Each floor has an apartment with two bedrooms and a kitchen, which the owners have been careful not to overly restore so the spaces still feel homely and lived-in. Hand drawn sketches and water colors of birds and plant life found on the grounds hang in the hallway, while a selection of books about the region and the artists who lived nearby in Barbizon or Milly-la-Forêt like Jean Cocteau and Niki de Saint Phalle are scattered on console tables by soft velvet couches and Victorian chaise longues arranged under floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the park with a creak. Alexis Armanet In winter, sit reading by the open fire in the living room after brisk countryside walks through the 185 acres of grounds (open to the public at weekends) of forested land and gardens with water features that look like something out of a fairy tale — perfect for younger guests to amble through. In summer, picnics are to be had out on the lawn that last until the setting sun makes the castle’s walls glow pink and purple. Just an hour south from Paris, Courances is located on the outskirts of the Gâtinais forest, which is great for dipping into nature and getting a taste for French countryside living without having to travel far from the city. Alexis Armanet At Courances, there’s also a small café in the old water mill where you can have lunch or tea and cake, with a nook of tables in a small clearing of the forest at the back, or a terrace at the front that looks out onto meticulously looked after Japanese gardens. Line the gardens and you’ll come to a wooden gate that leads to the restaurant where the kind staff, who are really great with kids, serve lunch, dinner and brunch at the weekends, on open-timber tables decorated with the most beautiful fresh flowers. Below is a small boutique selling produce grown on nearby farms like fruit and vegetables, a small selection of locally made jams, pasta and other sundries, as well as a collection of handmade soaps and wooden utensils for bathrooms and kitchens. James Darling Photography For evenings and mornings off, guests can also order breakfast baskets of fresh crusty baguettes and salted butter, jams and fruit to be delivered to the door, and light Mediterranean focused home cooked meals mixing with local produce from the restaurant kitchen. Respectful renovations of historic properties is what sets Pierres d’Histoire apart from other vacation home rental companies. As well as the Régie de Courances, the small company has six other maisons including a manor in Normandy, two stately family homes and an apartment on the grounds of another chateau not far from Courances, as well as a beautiful manor house in the Luberon countryside and a restored mill in the Languedoc. Each property’s soul shines through thanks to carefully considered refurbishments and tasteful hand-picked finds that fit with each house’s story, making it feel more like staying with a friend than in just another impersonal rental.

Inside The Lives Of Desperate Mums Shoplifting To Survive The Cost Of Living Crisis… – The Irish Sun https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/inside-the-lives-of-desperate-mums-shoplifting-to-survive-the-cost-of-living-crisis-the-irish-sun/ WITH prices rising higher than they have done for 40 years, millions are now struggling to afford essentials – and some are resorting to the most extreme measures… After dropping off her two young children at school, single mum Sarah (name has been changed) headed to her usual supermarket to do the weekly shop. 4 Sarah’s story is one of many single mothers who feel forced to turn to shoplifting in the cost of living crisis 4 Supermarkets have noticed more desperate people shoplifting basic items, instead of the luxury items expected of professional shoplifters 4 Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence Jess Phillips is not surprised some mums have shoplifted in the cost of living crisisCredit: Shutterstock 4 Rachel Macklin of The Trussell Trust lists several options to get help With no luxury items, it was the bare essentials she needed to keep her children fed and clean. Adding up the cost as she went along, she suddenly realised that she didn’t have enough to pay for it all.  Her heart thumping, she looked down at some of the most expensive items – a block of cheese, some fruit and a box of washing powder – and, on the spur of the moment, surreptitiously slid them under her large handbag in her trolley, before walking over to the till and paying for the rest of the items.  “As I left the shop, I was convinced the security guard was going to stop me. I thought I was going to be sick,” she recalls.  “When I got outside, I didn’t feel relieved I’d got away with stealing – just a deep sense of shame. “Despite working part-time, I felt like I’d been left with no choice. “I couldn’t see my children go hungry and I couldn’t send them to school in dirty clothes.” Sadly, Sarah is just one of many who have found themselves in a desperate situation since the cost of living crisis began in late 2021, fuelled by a perfect storm of rising gas prices, disruption to global supply chains and the war in Ukraine. Most read in The Irish Sun According to the Office For National Statistics, 89% of the UK’s adult population has seen their cost of living increase dramatically, leading to 16 million people cutting back on food and essentials. In August this year, prices rose higher than they had done in 40 years, with food in shops increasing by 5.1% and fresh food rising by a whopping 10.5%. The following month, proposed tax cuts put forward by Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng in his mini-budget left financial traders predicting interest rate rises by the Bank of England could be nearly 6% by spring 2023, meaning rocketing rents and mortgages that will lead to further hardship for many of us. Even with the recent U-turn on plans to scrap the 45p income tax rate for higher earners, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves says: “It’s come too late for the families who will pay higher mortgages and higher prices for years to come. Plus, the government has also not ruled out further U-turns or even cuts to benefits in the future” Despite soaring costs, Sarah’s wages from her receptionist job have – like so many others – stayed the same, and even taking on extra hours hasn’t helped enough. On top of her take-home pay of £350 a month, Sarah receives £36.25 a week in child benefit and £300 in maintenance from her ex-partner, who she split from eight months ago. After she has spent £500 on rent and £150 on bills, she is left with £145 a month for everything else, including food and essentials, public transport, clothes and the kids’ school events and trips.  And she’s not alone. Recent research from national poverty charity Turn2us revealed almost half its users reported being left with nothing to live on each week after paying rent, council tax and utility bills. “Every day, we see more people struggling to afford life’s absolute basics as the cost of living continues to push millions of people to the edge of a financial crisis,” says Michael Clarke, head of information programmes at Turn2us. “We are hearing from parents who are making impossible choices between paying soaring energy bills or rent, or skipping meals to keep their children fed. “This isn’t right. Many people using our services come to us when they are at their most desperate. And we fear the worst is yet to come.” Skipping meals to feed her children is something Sarah is well used to. “When the cost of living crisis started, I told myself things would be OK if I tightened my belt for a bit. “I made sure I only put the heating on when it was really cold, and began to walk where possible to save on public transport costs – but it wasn’t enough,” she says. “Soon I was skipping my evening meal to make sure my children didn’t go hungry and batch cooking twice a week so I didn’t have to use the oven every evening.  “At night, hungry and sometimes cold, I felt low and useless and questioned how my life had come to this.” Sarah says it was months of financial hardship that made her finally snap and shoplift for the very first time in her life – something she would never even have contemplated before. “I come from a nice, decent family and considered myself a ‘normal’ mum. I’d never broken the law before and prided myself on being a good role model to my children,” she says.  “I told myself I’d never shoplift again, but a month later, I had just £10 left. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford food for the week, let alone laundry detergent and sanitary products for myself. Outside the shop, I didn’t feel relieved I’d got away with it – just a deep sense of shame “I was too embarrassed to ask my family for help, and didn’t know how to go about finding a food bank. “So after a sleepless night, trying and failing to come up with a solution, I went to a different supermarket and chose two bags of pasta and the cheapest tomato sauce I could find, plus two boxes of cereal, six bananas, a loaf of bread and two pints of milk – and that was my £10 gone.” As Sarah added tampons, sanitary towels and the cheapest washing powder to her basket, her hands began to shake and her chest tightened. Taking a deep breath, she headed to the self-service till, scanned her food, pressed pay, then pretended to scan the other items. “That night, the guilt just ate me up and I couldn’t stop crying,” Sarah recalls. “I felt like a criminal and a bad mum.” She called a close friend, who confided that another friend – a single mum of three – had also seen no alternative but to take items without paying for them, because she didn’t have any money left after paying her bills.  In May this year, supermarket trade magazine The Grocer reported that store managers had noticed a rise in first-time shoplifters, with one saying they’d seen shoplifting starting to rise across everyday and low-value items, in contrast to the more often targeted luxury, high-cost items professional shoplifters take to sell on at a profit.  In the same month, HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Andy Cooke, told The Guardian that police officers should use discretion when deciding whether to prosecute desperate shoplifters amid rising poverty levels. Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley and Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding, is not surprised some mums have shoplifted since the start of the cost of living crisis. Where to get help Call Citizens Advice and the Trussell Trust’s Help Through Hardship helpline free on 0808 208 2138. StepChange provides free advice on what to do if you need help with money or food. Visit Stepchange.org and search “emergency help” or call 0800 138 1111. FoodCycle uses surplus ingredients to provide free hot meals to those in need. Find your nearest location at Foodcycle.org.uk. She says: “People, especially single mums, have been living on or over the edge for a long time already. “But in the last three months, I’ve noticed a new level of edge in their voices and correspondence – they are upset and desperate. “There’s this terrible unknown – people don’t know what’s coming, so I can imagine the amount of strain they’re under and the real fear they’re feeling will make them behave in ways which are completely contrary to their normal behaviour.”  Jess is currently in contact with one woman, a single mum who is currently off sick from work, who at one point had just 7p left in her bank account to feed her and her children. “What’s she supposed to do?” Jess says. “Even emergency resources take 48 hours to be put in place.” Although Jess managed to arrange emergency food parcels, the woman in question is just one of many in a desperate situation.  “It’s like living in a Dickens novel,” Jess says. “You wouldn’t believe the number of people living on uncooked food, such as crisp sandwiches, to save them the cost of putting the oven or microwave on.”  Indeed, those on the lowest incomes are faring the worst. New research from The Trussell Trust released last month found that more than 2 million people receiving Universal Credit had skipped meals during the previous three months, and 38% said they’d gone a whole day on one meal or no food at all in the last month, because they couldn’t afford to buy enough food. The Trussell Trust says it now expects increasing numbers of people will rely on food banks, which are already struggling to keep up with demand, unless the government takes immediate action to ensure the social security system provides people with enough support to afford the essentials. Meanwhile, a new survey on food poverty in schools, due to be published next month by Chefs In Schools, a healthy eating charity that trains chefs for school kitchens, has reported that schools are already seeing a heartbreaking increase in hungry children. Headteachers have told the cha...

Oregon State Vs. Washington State: How To Watch NCAA Football Online, TV Channel, Live Stream Info, Game Time – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/oregon-state-vs-washington-state-how-to-watch-ncaa-football-online-tv-channel-live-stream-info-game-time-cbs-sports/ Who’s Playing Washington State @ Oregon State Current Records: Washington State 4-2; Oregon State 4-2 What to Know The Washington State Cougars are 7-0 against the Oregon State Beavers since October of 2015, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success on Saturday. Washington State and Oregon State will face off in a Pac-12 battle at 9 p.m. ET at Reser Stadium. The Beavers will be strutting in after a win while the Cougars will be stumbling in from a defeat. Washington State received a tough blow last week as they fell 30-14 to the USC Trojans. The losing side was boosted by RB Jaylen Jenkins, who picked up 130 yards on the ground on 13 carries. That nimble footwork stands out as the first time Jenkins has hit the 100-yard rushing mark this season. Meanwhile, it was a tight contest that could have gone either way, but Oregon State made off with a 28-27 victory over the Stanford Cardinal last week. The win came about thanks to a strong surge after the third quarter to overcome a 24-10 deficit. Oregon State’s RB Damien Martinez looked sharp as he punched in one rushing touchdown. Martinez had some trouble finding his footing against the Utah Utes two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction. The Cougars are expected to lose this next one by 3. Those burned by picking them against the spread last week might want to keep in mind that the squad has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season. Washington State and the Beavers now sit at an identical 4-2. Two stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Washington State enters the game with only three rushing touchdowns allowed, good for eighth best in the nation. But Oregon State ranks 13th in the nation when it comes to rushing touchdowns, with 16 on the season. We’ll see if the Cougars’ defense can keep Oregon State’s running backs out of the end zone. Terra Classic Price Prediction Is LUNC Dead Two Experts Predict Zero Cryptonews
Terra Classic Price Prediction Is LUNC Dead Two Experts Predict Zero Cryptonews
Terra Classic Price Prediction – Is LUNC Dead, Two Experts Predict ‘Zero’ – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/terra-classic-price-prediction-is-lunc-dead-two-experts-predict-zero-cryptonews/ The day the Terra Classic price (LUNC) hit its 2022 top, two of the best crypto traders correctly predicted the bull run was over. That was September 8th, when the LUNC price reached $0.000593 on Binance, and as of mid October LUNC is now trading over 50% lower, below the $0.0003 support level. Terra LUNA Classic Price Prediction – Light Crypto Light (@lightcrypto), who has 169,000 followers, tweeted: “Think LUNC burn trade is about to implode, momentum just broke, elevator down is a high possibility”. GCR (@GiganticRebirth), who has 187,000 followers, replied from his secondary account with a Hillary Clinton quote “that’s right, zero”. GCR famously won a $10 million bet against former Terraform Labs CEO Do Kwon, with his bearish Terra LUNA price prediction back in March. Light, who runs a prop trading firm, then posted a long tweet thread a few days later with a mix of fundamental and technical analysis: As well as predicting the Terra Classic price action would be a pump and dump – “pumped by hit-and-run developers and cynical exchange operators, all taking advantage of the hordes of retail looking to make it all back in one trade” he tweeted a few days later that LUNC would drop 90%+ to return to its origin, or lower. Later that month, the LUNC price did crash 70% to $0.000179, although nothing goes down in a straight line (the Terra LUNA collapse in May was a black swan event caused by the circulating supply hyper inflating to 6.5 trillion). For Light’s prediction to play out – he charted a target of $0.00004, the yearly low of the new Terra Classic asset since the hard fork, hit on June 9th 2022 – the LUNC price would need to drop 84% from today’s price. October LUNC Price Prediction Tweets – LUNC Burn Light’s most recent tweet thread this month centres around Binance burning LUNC tokens, and how the 1.2% LUNC burn is not enough to justify Terra Classic increasing over $1 billion in market cap since it was announced. He also posted Coinalyze data on Oct 3rd showing an “insane amount of deadwood to wipe out in LUNC derivatives, $262.2 million across venues and instruments, all levered, all driven by a bankrupt narrative into a sell the news event.” Light opened a Terra Classic short position on Oct 2nd: “LUNC managed to add over $1b in market capitalization on a Binance announcement that will see a few million dollars removed from its circulating supply tomorrow. And in the long run, that weekly burn will trend to 0 along with LUNC’s volume. Filled full short again.” Incredibly, Oct 2nd was again a top, as the LUNC price spiked back to $0.000372 but the bounce from $0.0001794 ended there. Like his Sept 8th post, the Terra Classic price has not traded higher than that day since then. Across crypto Twitter circles, Light is considered one of the best crypto traders to follow for price predictions and other market analysis. As is GCR, who corrected predicted the Bitcoin price was topped out back in November 2021, when the all-time high of $69,000 was hit and the bear market began. We reported on how Gigantic Rebirth shorted LUNC at $0.00042 on Sept 9th, and was up almost $4.4 million in PnL a week later. Also on the day the Terra Classic price topped, another notable crypto analyst Tree of Alpha compared LUNC to a ponzi scheme and pointed out transaction tax burns didn’t prevent SafeMoon from going to zero. Terra Classic Alternatives If Light and GCR’s Terra Classic predictions continue to be accurate – as they have been so far – retail investors holding LUNC will stand to lose a lot in the correction. See our reviews of the latest crypto presales for some high potential LUNC alternatives. New token presales typically generate a higher ROI than assets that already have a multi-billion dollar market capitalization. We previously reviewed Tamadoge before it outperformed the Terra Classic bull run within the space of a week, rising over 1,900% before a retracement. Our latest review is of IMPT token, a carbon offsetting crypto project with greater real-world utility than LUNC. Visit IMPT.io

Opioid Crisis: US Teens Fastest Growing Group To Die BBC
Opioid Crisis: US Teens Fastest Growing Group To Die BBC
Opioid Crisis: US Teens Fastest Growing Group To Die – BBC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/opioid-crisis-us-teens-fastest-growing-group-to-die-bbc/ Image source, Ramos family Image caption, Melanie Ramos was 15 when she took a pill that killed her By Regan Morris BBC News, Los Angeles Teen overdose deaths have never been higher in the US as young Americans are increasingly poisoned by the synthetic opiate fentanyl, even as fewer teens use drugs. More than 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses last year – the vast majority were adults – but the fastest growing group to die of overdoses were teenagers. Melanie Ramos’ family knows this all too well. The 15-year-old girl died inside her school’s bathroom last month after taking a pill laced with fentanyl. Melanie and her friend thought they were taking Percocet, a pain medication that is sometimes abused. But the counterfeit pills were laced with fentanyl and she was poisoned. “She was a beautiful, sweet girl coming from hardworking parents,” her uncle Oscar said at a candlelight vigil on the steps of Bernstein High School, where friends and family prayed in Spanish and placed flowers on a shrine to Melanie. Fentanyl is typically smuggled into the United States by Mexican drug cartels. While it used to be laced into the hardest drugs like heroin, the cartels now mass-produce fentanyl pills in rainbow colours to mimic prescription pills and, some say, to target kids who are more willing to experiment with them. In Los Angeles a spate of overdose deaths from pills has authorities worried, and on Wednesday, the state of California seized 52lb (24kg) of fentanyl powder – enough to make a quarter million pills – as part of a state-wide operation led by the Justice department. But the problem extends across the US. In New York last week, authorities seized 15,000 rainbow coloured pills hidden in a Lego toy box. The US is an outlier when it comes to overdoses, with a death rate 20 times the global average – although Scotland is not far behind. “We are far and away the world leader in overdose death unfortunately,” said Joseph Friedman, a substance use researcher at the University of California Los Angeles. The overdose rate among school-aged children in the US doubled between 2019 and 2020 and then rose a further 20% last year, he said. “Teen drug use is becoming more dangerous but not more common,” Mr Friedman said, adding that fentanyl, not the stress of the pandemic was to blame: Teen drug use actually dropped sharply during the pandemic because it is usually a social activity. Image caption, Melanie’s high school, like other LA schools, will now stock Narcan, an overdose reversal medication At a contentious meeting at Bernstein High School, where Melanie died, officials and police warned upset families and children that “one pill can kill”. Her death has prompted LA officials to stock the overdose reversal medication, Narcan, in every school. The medication, which commonly comes in the form of a nasal spray, can be used by anyone to reverse the effects of an overdose. Increasing access to Narcan is also part of a federal response to the opioid crisis announced this month by the Biden administration, which said it would inject $1.5bn (£1.3bn) to fund programmes and support law enforcement to go after drug traffickers. Experts say teens will experiment with drugs no matter what they are told or taught in schools, so overdose prevention is the only way to slow the growth in overdose deaths. Community Health Project Los Angeles workers provide free Narcan and fentanyl testing strips – so people can test drugs before getting high. They are glad schools will now keep Narcan on hand, and have urged parents and kids to carry it in their backpacks. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Schools will have the nasal spray version of Narcan At a recent training, drug and alcohol counsellor Sandra Mims demonstrated how to use the spray – one spritz up the nose, followed by a rub on the sternum. Then another spray 2-3 minutes later if the person overdosing did not respond. “Children start as young as 12,” Ms Mims said. “It’s so much more deadly now with fentanyl and the synthetic pills.” Nick Angelo, who has used opiates in the past but now works for the non-profit, saved three people with Narcan in a single week. But he sounded weary rather than heroic when talking about it. “When me and my friends were using opiates we didn’t have to worry that every single hit we took could be our last,” he said.

Bulldogs Beat Mustangs 28-14 For Burnet County Bragging Rights – DailyTrib.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/bulldogs-beat-mustangs-28-14-for-burnet-county-bragging-rights-dailytrib-com/ Burnet junior Grant Jones barrels through open space as the Marble Falls defense chases the speedy playmaker. Photo by Martelle Luedecke/Luedecke Photography The Burnet Bulldogs (4-3, 1-1 district) prevailed in a hard-fought District 13-4A Division I rivalry game against the Marble Falls Mustangs (2-5, 0-2 district) winning 28-14 in the Battle for Burnet County at Mustang Stadium. “We have a lot of soul searching to do,” Marble Falls head coach Brian Herman said. After stifling the Burnet offense on the first drive, the Mustangs appeared to be in the driver’s seat in the opening minutes of the game.  Marble Falls followed that strong defensive effort with a 57-yard drive capped off with an 8-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Dominic Fierro, giving the Mustangs an early 6-0 advantage after a failed two-point conversion on a quarterback sneak by junior quarterback Kody Smith. Responding instantly, Burnet junior Grant Jones returned the ensuing kickoff for a 97-yard touchdown, shifting the momentum of the game and giving the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead. “We needed to control momentum, and we did not,” Herman said. “It was no different from last week (against Canyon Lake).” After allowing the gut-wrenching kickoff return for a touchdown, the Mustangs failed to assemble a positive drive as the Bulldogs capitalized on the energy created by Jones. Choosing to get creative, Burnet head coach Brian Wood dialed up a halfback pass on a toss play to Jones, and the junior playmaker found senior wide receiver Braden-Ellet Clark on a deep bomb down the middle of the field. Appearing to be touchdown-bound, Ellet-Clark coughed up the ball on the 2-yard line after junior safety Jaime Castillo punched it out and recovered it on the turf. Ninety-eight yards away from paydirt, Marble Falls failed to make it past the shadow of their own goalpost, punting the ball once again and giving the Bulldogs excellent field position to start their next drive. Opting for a balanced approach in the second quarter, Burnet utilized junior wide receiver Trenton Park and junior running back Dash Denton on a 47-yard touchdown drive. Senior running back Jose Rodriguez ran it in from 8 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 14-6 lead. On the subsequent possession, Castillo appeared poised to impact the game. Breaking tackles and lowering his shoulder, the junior halfback was able to fight for positive yards on several plays.  After seemingly taking the passing game over the ground game, Castillo stretched the ball out for more yardage on a first-down conversion and was tackled by a mob of Bulldogs defenders, fumbling the ball midway through the second quarter. Luckily for Marble Falls, the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on the turnover. The game slowed down as the first half drew to a close, with a last-second effort by Park before being taken down inside the 20-yard to end the half. Similar to their performance against Kerrville Tivy, the Mustangs came into the second half with new life, running the ball seemingly at will against the Burnet defense.  Holding the ball for over six minutes on a 65-yard drive, junior fullback Jasael Ruiz punched in a 3-yard touchdown to cut into the deficit. A successful two-point conversion evened the score at 14-14. With a shift in scheme, the Bulldogs responded by running an abridged version of the Mustangs offense, relying on punishing the interior of the Marble Falls defense with a multitude of designed runs by Denton, Rodriguez, and Jones while also chewing up the clock. After driving the length of the field to the 14-yard line, Jones got the ball for an outside run to the left side. With nowhere to go, he reversed direction, running backward for multiple yards before traveling toward the other sideline.  Unable to react, the Mustangs failed to stop Jones as he descended to the opposite pylon, scoring on a miracle touchdown to push the Bulldogs ahead, 21-14. Building off of the momentum created by Jones’ run, the Burnet defense stiffened as penalties woes plagued Marble Falls. The stifling defense forced Marble Falls to gamble on a fourth-down conversion at midfield, handing the ball to Ruiz in hopes of a 3-yard gain to keep the possession alive. A mob of Bulldog defenders gang tackled the junior fullback, giving the Burnet offense another short field to work with. Keeping with the shift toward the running game and ball control, Wood continued to utilize his backfield to wear down the opposing defense. A 3-yard run by Denton midway through the fourth quarter gave the Bulldogs a 28-14 lead. Becoming desperate, the Mustangs opted to go to the air as the game came to a close, but Burnet’s Jones intercepted an errant Smith pass on fourth-and-13 on the 28-yard line.  The Mustang defense delivered its final stop, affording their offense a chance to make a storybook comeback with less than four minutes to go in the game.  Dropping back, Smith threw a deep bomb downfield to Castillo but was intercepted by Burnet sophomore cornerback Lew Laidler to end the contest. “I’m tired of saying the same thing every game,” Herman said. “We’re better than we’re showing. I believe it. We need the kids to believe it.” The Mustangs will look to break their four-game losing streak on the road against the Taylor Ducks (3-4, 0-2 district), while Burnet aims to continue their winning ways against the Canyon Lake Hawks (3-3, 2-0 district) at Bulldog Stadium. Both games are Friday, Oct. 21. nathan@thepicayune.com Continue Reading

Elections Expected To Bring Smiles To Travel And Hotel Industry – The Star Online https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/elections-expected-to-bring-smiles-to-travel-and-hotel-industry-the-star-online/ PETALING JAYA: Despite the gloomy skies of the monsoon season, the 15th General Election (GE15) is still expected to bring a ray of sunshine to the domestic travel and hospitality industry. Even with predictions of a lower voter turnout due to political fatigue and the possibility of polling day being a weekday, domestic travel is expected to see a rise during the election period. This is because party workers, election staff and voters will be on the ground, said Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents president Datuk Tan Kok Liang. “Hotels, transport service providers, and food and beverage outlets can look forward to a significant rise in revenue,” he added. Asked if there had been tour cancellations or changes in vacation dates by holidaymakers, Tan said this has not been the case as voting is not mandatory in Malaysia. “Many families are going ahead with their overseas holidays regardless of the polling date, and international tours that had been booked earlier will likely proceed. “Cancellations are minimal except for active politicians and party members who may have other responsibilities,” he said. According to Melaka Tourism Association president Madelina Kuah, no bookings by independent travellers or group package tours have been cancelled so far. She said that since Melaka had already held its state election in 2021, there were only six parliamentary seats up for grabs in GE15. “On voting day, it is likely that people who have committed to travelling will go ahead,” said Kuah. Sky Mirror Tour & Travel Sdn Bhd managing director Dyven Wong said people are waiting until the Election Commission (EC) announces the polling date before rescheduling travel plans. “Until today, no customer has cancelled or postponed bookings because of GE15,” he said. Political analyst Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia expects voter turnout in this election to be lower than in GE14 in 2018, which was at 82.32%. A low turnout will give an advantage to Barisan Nasional, he said, adding that the high turnout in GE14 saw Pakatan Harapan form the government for the first time, while low turnouts at the Melaka and Johor state elections secured big wins for Barisan Nasional. “It is very likely that many Malaysians will not come back to vote unless political parties can convince them,” said the professor. Prof Sivamurugan also said a low turnout could also be expected if GE15 is held on a weekday, adding that this is nothing new. “The last GE was held on a Wednesday. In fact, our first GE after independence in 1959 was held on a Wednesday; GE9 on a Tuesday; and GE10 on a Monday. “However, it’s better to have it on a weekend to encourage more voters to come out and vote,” he said, adding that Malaysian voters are also tired of the continuous politicking since 2018. “A ‘wow’ or feel-good factor will motivate them to come out, but it all depends on issues brought up by the parties and candidates,” he said. The EC will meet on Thursday to set nomination and polling dates.

J.C. Jackson Not Producing Interceptions On Chargers Defense Los Angeles Times
J.C. Jackson Not Producing Interceptions On Chargers Defense – Los Angeles Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/j-c-jackson-not-producing-interceptions-on-chargers-defense-los-angeles-times/ He denied that he’s pressing, J.C. Jackson insisting that his contract isn’t weighing on him like some $82.5-million anchor strapped to his back. Part of the problem, Jackson explained, is that he should be pressing, as in playing a tighter, more aggressive style at the line of scrimmage. “I’m a bump-and-run corner, a press corner,” Jackson said. “That’s my game. I need to stick to my game.” The Chargers signed Jackson in March to a five-year deal guaranteeing him $40 million and potentially worth more than double that amount. He cashed in financially after blossoming as an undrafted free agent in New England. Jackson was acquired to help ignite a defense that too often went flat last year. The Chargers needed more game-changers, more playmakers who could steal footballs and momentum. In the previous four seasons, no one in the NFL had more interceptions than Jackson’s 25. He made his first Pro Bowl last year after leading the league with 23 passes defensed. But in three games with his new team, Jackson has struggled to produce. He has yet to intercept a pass and has been credited with just a single breakup. Jackson missed the Chargers’ season opener and then their Week 3 matchup while dealing with the lingering effects of an August surgical procedure on his right ankle. Both he and coach Brandon Staley said the time off has been a factor in his slow start, but Jackson insisted he is healthy. Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson warms up before a win over the Houston Texans on Oct. 2. (Bob Levey / Getty Images) “The ankle thing has nothing to do with it,” he said. “It’s more about technique and fundamentals. It’s still a learning process with the defense and everything else. I’m not blaming my ankle. I’m 100% healthy.” Said Staley: “We brought him here to do what he does best. We’re not trying to change him, that’s for sure. It’s just him getting out there with his teammates, getting in rhythm and playing his game.” His game, Jackson assured, will be on display soon, the cornerback suggesting that a first-strike approach will lead to increased production. As a starter, he never has played more zone than he has this season, according to Next Gen Stats. Last weekend in Cleveland, Jackson was beaten in the first quarter for an 11-yard touchdown in man-to-man coverage by Amari Cooper. When the ball was snapped, Jackson was nearly 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. He ended up surrendering five receptions for 58 yards against the Browns as they targeted him a team-high nine times, according to Pro Football Focus. But Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill said Jackson’s performance improved after halftime, after the coaches “challenged him” and made adjustments. “The second half, we felt like that story was a little bit different,” Hill said. “He got out there in press and challenged a little bit more, and it looked a whole lot better. That is what we have to continue to do. … He’s going to mix it up. But we know that his strong suit is getting up there and pressing.” Jackson has been targeted 20 times this season while allowing 15 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns, according to PFF. He yielded 108 of those yards in Week 4 at Houston. During his four years with the Patriots, Jackson never finished with a PFF coverage grade below 70. So far for the Chargers, he has graded out at less than half that number: 32.1. “Nobody knows my confidence more than me,” Jackson said. “Nobody’s got higher standards than myself. I’m gonna get back to where I should be soon. This is nothing I can’t handle.” To follow Jackson on Twitter, search for “MR_INT,” a reference to the ball-thieving ways that marked his time in New England. During a stretch in 2020, he had interceptions in five consecutive games. But, dating to his final appearance with the Patriots, he has gone four in a row without a pickoff, matching the longest such streak of his career in games he has started. Jackson’s most recent interception came Jan. 2 against Trevor Lawrence on a day when the Jacksonville quarterback was picked off three times. “Each week, I feel like J.C.’s growing,” safety Derwin James Jr. said. “He’s gonna keep improving. Eventually, he’s gonna play the way we know he can play. We all know what type of player J.C. is.” Jackson and James have lockers next to each other in the Chargers’ Costa Mesa training facility. Last week while Jackson was talking to reporters, James leaned in and said, “I can’t wait till you get your first pick.” Responded Jackson: “That’s what they waitin’ for. The world waitin’ on that.” Reminded that the world includes the Chargers and their fans, Jackson smiled. “Once I start making plays, y’all are going to see,” he said. “Then we’re going to see what they got to say then. … It’s just a matter of time.” Etc. The Chargers likely will be without Keenan Allen (hamstring) on Monday night against Denver after the wide receiver was limited in practice all week. He was listed as doubtful. … Trey Pipkins III (knee) was listed as questionable, but Staley indicated he expects the right tackle to play. … Kicker Dustin Hopkins (quadriceps) is set to return after missing last week’s game. … Center Corey Linsley also is expected to play after being held out of practice Saturday because of an illness.

Metaverse-Style Avatars Are Now Available In Microsoft Teams – TechRadar https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/metaverse-style-avatars-are-now-available-in-microsoft-teams-techradar/ Home News Software (Image credit: Microsoft) Microsoft has announced that animated avatars are now available in preview for its Teams collaboration platform. Via the Avatars app in the Microsoft Teams App Store, members of the Technical Access Program can now design up to three avatars for use during meetings, and choose from an array of reaction gestures. So-called Mesh avatars were first announced for Microsoft Teams in a blog post (opens in new tab) by John Roach, the company’s CTO of digital advisory services, back in November 2021. Mesh avatars in the workplace Mesh avatars allow for greater freedom of expression in a hybrid working environment, with users able to customize physical attributes, accessories, and other aspects of themselves. Microsoft’s release of the feature at its Ignite event reiterates its commitment to blurring the line between video conferencing software and metaverses, which some business leaders believe are the next big development in collaboration tools following the shift to hybrid working.  These spaces are designed around mesh avatars interacting inside a virtual space equipped with the tools that teams need to collaborate, such as whiteboards, document storage, and video conferencing software. If Microsoft continues to develop metaverse-adjacent features for the Teams platform, it could manage to scupper Meta’s plans for the sector with its own Horizon Workrooms metaverse. Horizon Workrooms could end up being seen as a less convenient offering when up against Teams, a video conferencing app that’s already in use by many organizations and benefits from Microsoft 365 integration. Until then, organizations looking to try out the new mesh avatars but without access to the private preview build can sign up for updates on the Teams website (opens in new tab). The regulatory authorities have essentially alleged that Bittrex did not conduct proper due diligence on its customers and transactions between 2014 and 2018, which allowed users from sanctioned regions to use the platform. Bittrex confirmed it would settle with OFAC for around $24 million, which may also be applied as a credit toward its $29 million settlement owed to FinCEN. Iowa Poll: Chuck Grassley Narrowly Leads Mike Franken In US Senate Race Des Moines Register
Iowa Poll: Chuck Grassley Narrowly Leads Mike Franken In US Senate Race Des Moines Register
Iowa Poll: Chuck Grassley Narrowly Leads Mike Franken In US Senate Race – Des Moines Register https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/iowa-poll-chuck-grassley-narrowly-leads-mike-franken-in-us-senate-race-des-moines-register/ © Copyright 2022, Des Moines Register and Tribune Co. Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley’s lead over Democrat Mike Franken has narrowed to 3 percentage points with less than a month until Election Day, signaling Grassley’s toughest reelection fight in 40 years.    A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows Grassley leads with 46% of the vote to Franken’s 43% among likely voters. Another 4% would vote for someone else, 4% would not vote and 3% are not sure.   “It says to me that Franken is running a competent campaign and has a shot to defeat the seemingly invincible Chuck Grassley — previously perceived to be invincible,” said pollster J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co. The poll of 804 Iowa adults, including 620 likely voters, was conducted Oct. 9-12 by Selzer & Co. The questions asked of all Iowans have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; it’s plus or minus 3.9 percentage points for the questions asked of likely voters.     Grassley, 89, is seeking his eighth term in the Senate this year. Franken, 64, is a retired U.S. Navy admiral.  The numbers suggest a contest closer than any Grassley has faced since he defeated a Democratic incumbent by 8 percentage points to win his first election to the Senate in 1980.  His closest result since then came in 2016, when he defeated former Lt. Gov. Patty Judge by 24 percentage points.   Many political pundits and party officials had written off this year’s Iowa Senate contest, expecting Grassley to once again cruise to victory. Election analysts for months have rated the race in Grassley’s favor, and national Democratic groups have indicated they don’t plan to spend money supporting Franken, instead focusing on states where they see greater potential for victory.   But the poll indicates weaknesses for Grassley beyond his head-to-head race with Franken.  His job disapproval rating is a record high for him in the Iowa Poll. The percentage of Iowans who view him unfavorably also hit a peak. And nearly two-thirds of likely voters say the senator’s age is a concern rather than an asset.  Franken, meanwhile, is still unknown to more than a third of Iowans. But of those who do know enough about him to form an opinion, more view him favorably than unfavorably.  U.S. Senate race narrows as independents shift to Mike Franken  Franken has improved his performance since July, when a previous Iowa Poll showed Grassley leading by eight percentage points, 47% to 39%.   Franken’s improvement in the head-to-head contest is aided by an advantage among political independents, who back him over Grassley by 11 percentage points,  46% to 35%.  In July, independents were nearly evenly split, with 38% backing Franken and 37% backing Grassley.   Donna Patterson, an 88-year-old independent from Evansdale, said she plans to vote for Franken this year.  More:How to vote in Iowa’s 2022 elections for governor, US Senate, state Legislature “I do hope he gets in,” the poll respondent said. “I feel he is for the people.”  Patterson, who is retired from working a variety of jobs, said she’s voted for Grassley in the past, but now, “I would vote for anybody that ran against Grassley.”  “When he was younger and first started out in government, he was good,” she said. “He really was. He was very sincere about being for the people, and now he will do whatever the Republican Party tells him to do. And that’s not right.”  Where do Chuck Grassley and Mike Franken have the strongest support?  Each candidate has nearly universal support among members of their own political parties, with 93% of Democrats supporting Franken and 90% of Republicans supporting Grassley.  Just 4% of Democrats say they would vote for Grassley, while 2% of Republicans say they would vote for Franken.  Those numbers show both candidates consolidating support among their own parties. In July,  88% of Democrats supported Franken and 85% of Republicans supported Grassley.  Among demographic groups, Grassley’s strongest showing comes among evangelicals, with 73% support. He also receives majority support from rural residents (61%); men (56%); and Protestants (54%).  He also gets 53% support among those ages 55 and older, those without a college degree and those who live in towns. And he has 52% support from Iowans in the 4th Congressional District and 51% from Catholics.  Mark Johanns, a Dubuque resident and poll respondent, said he has followed Grassley’s career since he was 16 years old and first met Grassley.   “I think he still represents Iowa,” said Johanns, who is in his late 50s and works in agriculture. “He works tirelessly. He has been around each county this year. I’d see him down at the Iowa State football games. And for a man of his age and character, he carries it off like he’s 30 years old.”  Johanns is a registered independent, but he expects to vote a straight Republican ticket this year.   “The price of my utilities has skyrocketed,” he said. “Food has skyrocketed. The farmers’ costs have gone off the page. And everything was pretty balanced out when (former Republican President Donald) Trump was in order. And I totally disagree with what the current administration is doing with everything right now.”   Franken earns majority support among those with no religious affiliation (62%), those with a college degree (56%), city dwellers (55%), women (54%) and suburban voters (53%).  Most likely voters are concerned about Chuck Grassley’s age  Grassley faces concerns about his age from a majority of likely voters — including a third of those who say they plan to vote for him.  At 89, Grassley is the second-oldest senator currently in office, behind only Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who is a few months older. If he is elected and serves out another six-year term, he would be the second-oldest member of Congress ever at 95.   He has served in public office continuously since he was first elected to the Iowa Legislature in 1958.   Grassley has portrayed his longevity as an asset, arguing it gives him clout and influence as he works on behalf of Iowans.   But just a third — 34% of likely Iowa voters — say they believe his longevity is an asset to Iowa. Most — 60% — say his age is a concern. Another 6% say they’re not sure.   Among Republicans, 58% say Grassley’s longevity is an asset. But more than a third, 37%, say his age is a concern.   Independents view his age as more of a concern (64%) than an asset (30%).   And Democrats are overwhelmingly concerned, at 86%. Just 8% see Grassley’s years of service as an asset.  The results send “a strong message that this is a piece of what’s going on with the erosion of support for Chuck Grassley,” Selzer said.   During a televised Senate debate earlier this month, Grassley said he intends to serve out a full six-year term if he’s elected. He said Iowans who wonder whether he’s up to the task should look at his schedule.   “I go to bed at nine, get up at four, run two miles, get to the office by six, sometimes a little bit before six,” he said.  He said he went 27 years without missing a vote in Congress, he completes his committee work in Washington, D.C., and he tours the state’s 99 counties when he’s at home.   “I think that that’s how I’m going to continue for the next term of office if the people will return me to the United States Senate,” he said.  Most likely voters see Mike Franken’s out-of-state experience as an asset  The Grassley campaign has sought to cast Franken as out of touch with everyday Iowans.   Franken is originally from Lebanon, Iowa, and lives in Sioux City. He spent nearly 40 years in the Navy and retired in 2017 as a three-star vice admiral.  He has held a variety of roles in Washington, including as the first military officer on U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy’s staff, at the U.S. Department of Defense and as chief of legislative affairs for the Navy.   He returned to Iowa in 2019 to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Sen. Whistleblower Will Wilkerson Reveals The Turmoil Inside Trumps Truth Social The Washington Post
Whistleblower Will Wilkerson Reveals The Turmoil Inside Trumps Truth Social The Washington Post
Whistleblower Will Wilkerson Reveals The Turmoil Inside Trump’s Truth Social – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/whistleblower-will-wilkerson-reveals-the-turmoil-inside-trumps-truth-social-the-washington-post/ Will Wilkerson, then an executive at former president Donald Trump’s start-up Trump Media & Technology Group, was at a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., coffee shop with company co-founder Andy Litinsky last October when Trump called Litinsky with a question: Would he give up some of his shares to Trump’s wife, Melania? Trump Media, the owner of the fledgling social network Truth Social, had just been boosted by a huge merger agreement and a flood of investment that had made the stake worth millions of dollars. Trump had already been given 90 percent of the company’s shares in exchange for the use of his name and some minor involvement, leaving everyone else to split the rest. Litinsky tried to brush it off, telling Trump “the gift would have meant a huge tax bill he couldn’t pay,” Wilkerson said in an interview. “Trump didn’t care. He said, ‘Do whatever you need to do.’ ” Five months later, Litinsky, who first met Trump in 2004 as a contestant on the TV show “The Apprentice,” was abruptly removed from the company’s board. Wilkerson said he believes it was payback for his refusal to turn over a small fortune to the former president’s wife. Litinsky thought so, too, according to an email Wilkerson and his attorneys shared with The Washington Post and the Securities and Exchange Commission. In that email, Litinsky complained that Trump was “retaliating against me” by threatening to “ ‘blow up the company’ if his demands are not met.” Litinsky did not respond to emails and phone messages. It is unknown whether he still retains his shares. The email — one of hundreds of previously unreported company messages, documents, photos and audio recordings that Wilkerson has provided to the SEC in connection with a whistleblower submission — reveals a stunning portrait of the animosity that has built up inside Trump Media since its high-profile debut last year. Promoted as the centerpiece of Trump’s post-presidential business ambitions, the company had marketed itself as a budding media empire, with enterprises planned in social media, video streaming, live events and online payments — a powerful rival not just to Twitter but Disney, Google and Amazon. But inside the company, Wilkerson said, those plans gave way to bitter infighting, technical failures and a chaotic jockeying for power among Trump allies that undermined its potential and left some employees crying at their desks. Wilkerson, who was fired from his job Thursday as a senior vice president of operations at the company after he spoke to The Post, filed the whistleblower complaint with the SEC in August. The complaint, drafted by Wilkerson’s attorneys, alleges that the company’s bid to raise money via an investment vehicle known as a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, relied on “fraudulent misrepresentations … in violation of federal securities laws.” The SEC, a federal watchdog agency, allows members of the public to submit tips, complaints and referrals about suspected financial wrongdoing via a document the agency calls a Form TCR. Whistleblowers can be granted confidentiality protections and, in some cases, financial awards. Litinsky did not join in the complaint. Wilkerson is cooperating with investigations into Trump Media by the SEC and federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, said his attorneys, Phil Brewster, Patrick Mincey and Stephen Bell. Among the materials he filed with the SEC’s whistleblower office is a detailed, day-to-day computer log compiled by company co-founder Wes Moss, Litinsky and Wilkerson about their daily company-related activities. He also provided to The Post a copy of that log as well as numerous other memos, photographs and videos that chronicled the creation of Trump Media. All of the materials Wilkerson shared with The Post were previously provided to government investigators, his attorneys said. The SEC and the SDNY declined to comment. In an SEC filing in December, Digital World acknowledged that the SEC was investigating and had sought documents related to the merger with Trump Media. In another filing in June, Digital World said it had become aware that a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York had issued subpoenas to its board members seeking documents related to its initial public offering filings and “communications with or about multiple individuals.” The investigations, the company said, could “impede or prevent” the merger. Wilkerson said he was still working for the company on Oct. 6 when his SEC complaint was first reported by the Miami Herald. A Trump Media attorney sent Wilkerson a letter that night suspending him for what the lawyer said was a “blatant violation” of his nondisclosure agreement. After interviewing Wilkerson alongside his attorneys, The Post on Wednesday sent a detailed list of claims and questions raised by Wilkerson’s allegations to representatives for Trump, Trump Media and the Trump Organization, Trump’s long-running family business. Only Trump Media responded, saying in a statement that Trump, as company chairman, had hired former congressman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) as CEO to “create a culture of compliance and build a world-class team to lead Truth Social.” The company said it was already a success, having launched on the Apple and Google app stores, “executed multiple feature updates” and attracted millions of users. “Ignoring these achievements, The Washington Post sent us an inquiry rife with knowingly false and defamatory statements and other concocted psychodramas.” The statement did not directly address any of Wilkerson’s claims. Trump Media fired Wilkerson on Thursday, citing his “unauthorized disclosures” to The Post. Brewster, his attorney, called the termination “patent retaliation against an SEC whistleblower of the worst kind.” Digital World Acquisition, the SPAC that is pushing to take Trump Media public, has asked shareholders to give the company more time to finalize the merger, which would unlock hundreds of millions of dollars for Trump Media but is effectively frozen pending the outcomes of the federal investigations. Digital World and its chief executive, Patrick Orlando, did not respond to requests for comment. The revelations to the SEC from Wilkerson, the most prominent company official to speak publicly about its operations, come at a turbulent time for Trump Media’s business. Investors, discouraged by the halted merger, have sent the SPAC’s share price plunging from a high of $175 to less than $18 on Friday. Roughly 4 million users follow Trump on the company’s sole product, Truth Social — far below his Twitter peak of 88 million. The company has pledged to investors it would surpass 50 million total users by 2024. In past public statements, Nunes, Orlando and Trump have argued that Trump Media will ultimately prove to be a successful business. But Wilkerson said he expects its internal problems could lead the company to fall apart. “We weren’t trying to be Trump Org 2.0,” he said. “We always saw Trump as the rocket fuel to send this thing to space. I wanted this to succeed more than anything. … But these are glaring issues, and they’re threatening me now for calling them out. I couldn’t stay quiet anymore.” Wilkerson, 38, isn’t a traditional Trump critic. When Litinsky and Moss, another former “Apprentice” contestant, first started discussing the idea of a multipronged Trump media business after Trump’s November 2020 election loss, the men had asked for his help developing the business, Wilkerson said. A former executive producer for Litinsky’s conservative radio show, Wilkerson was excited about monetizing the following of a person he considered a master marketer with 40 years as a political and household name. Wilkerson shared a photo from that time of the men sketching the original concept on a whiteboard, titled “Trump’s New Media Empire,” that would ultimately compose the company’s public pitch, including new business lines (“Trump Digital Subscription,” “Trump Documentaries”) and a chain of “Trump technologies,” including in servers and online payments. After Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and Trump was banned from major social networks, the men drew up plans for a tech platform that would be “resilient to cancel culture and the impact of bias against the right,” according to the daily log Wilkerson shared with The Post and the SEC. To meet with Trump, the men sought help from another “Apprentice” contestant, Bradford Cohen, a Florida criminal-defense attorney who represented two rappers, Lil Wayne and Kodak Black, to whom Trump had granted clemency on his final day in the White House. In late January, three weeks after the riot, Cohen, Litinsky and Moss met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, his opulent home and club in Palm Beach, Fla., to discuss the idea. Over cheeseburgers, Diet Cokes and ice cream, the men offered to build Trump a media company that he would own 90 percent of without putting in any of his own money, Wilkerson said. He was interested, and Trump Media was born. Cohen and Moss did not respond to requests for comment. Raising money, however, proved to be a major challenge. The investment bankers they called rejected them because of fears over Trump’s post-election behavior, Wilkerson said. So they started cold-calling SPACs. Known as “blank-check companies,” SPACs sell shares to investors before merging with a private company, allowing the combined business to make money on the stock market without abiding by the traditional transparency requirements of a public listing. They ultimately found a willing partner in Orlando, a financier in Miami who had recently launched a SPAC, Benessere Capital Acquisition, with $100 million in its c...

Destination Florida: How Tourism In The Sunshine State Is Weathering The Storm Irish Examiner
Destination Florida: How Tourism In The Sunshine State Is Weathering The Storm Irish Examiner
Destination Florida: How Tourism In The Sunshine State Is Weathering The Storm – Irish Examiner https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/destination-florida-how-tourism-in-the-sunshine-state-is-weathering-the-storm-irish-examiner/ Last month, I attended the Brand USA summit, a lively meetup in Frankfurt where tourist board officials from across America and its territories met European travel journalists to promote their cities and region.  A number of CEOs from across Florida crossed my networking path and they were proud to showboat their region’s areas from eco-tourism in Fort Myers, electric boat tours in Tampa to (this is Florida…) ziplining over gators in Kissimmee. Yet, all the while we were networking, news was reaching the podiums of the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian back home. Two weeks on from the devastating storm, the cost on tourism is being counted (at billions) with some resorts having been virtually wiped out by the impact. But in true Floridian spirit, the clean-up is underway, hotels (and Disneyland) are reopening… and the message from many cities is that Florida is back open for business. “We have some lingering flooding in some of the residential and non-tourist areas but all resorts, hotels and vacation rentals are opened and fully operational,” says DT Minich, CEO of Experience Kissimmee the hugely popular tourism town in central Florida. “All of the theme parks are fully reopened and most of the other attractions as well,” he added. Mr Minich also highlighted that consumer confidence remains for the state which welcomes over 100m visitors per year. “Long haul, business is looking strong for the holiday season,” he added, “and we also have healthy bookings for the first through third quarter of 2023. As air service continues to return and expand from our overseas markets, we are seeing that added capacity book fast. There is still a lot of pent-up demand for the US, Florida, and Kissimmee.” Back in Ireland, Florida specialist Tour America is still seeing strong demand for the state. “Florida is one of our top destinations in the USA and we continue to receive lots of enquiries for 2022/2023 and beyond,” CEO of Tour America Mary McKenna told me this week. “In fact, when we looked at our booking data for 2023, we found that Orlando is coming out on top as the number-one US destination our customers are booking”. Theme parks are proving the top type of holiday for Tour America clients for 2023 with Florida appealing to all different types of holidaymakers according to McKenna. “Families love the beautiful beaches and famous theme parks, whilst young explorers are keen to hop in a rental and cruise down the Florida Keys. It also attracts a huge number of golfers each year, since it boasts almost 1,100 courses, located all over the state. “And of course, we can’t forget the weather. Irish holidaymakers love being able to escape the cold weather and head to sunnier shores, which makes Florida the perfect destination as late winter and early spring are the ideal times to visit this amazing destination.” There’s value too, the operator is offering seven-night packages to Orlando from €722pps while if you fancy travelling DIY, Aer Lingus fly to both Miami and Orlando from €396 return. Hopefully this winter, tourism in the Sunshine State will continue to shine. For more, see visitflorida.com 1. Destination Cleveland Oh hi, Ohio! If you’re looking for an alternative US escape, then how about a trip on the latest Aer Lingus route, Cleveland, famed for its Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Lake Erie beaches. As the only direct link to the city offered by a European airline, the route will strategically offer Ohioans the opportunity to travel to Ireland and Europe via Dublin while also tempting Irish travellers to experience the gateway to the Midwest hub. Aer Lingus has just also announced the return of the airline’s Dublin to Hartford route which was suspended during the pandemic. Flights to Connecticut resume from March offering a handy option for those with interests between Boston and New York. aerlingus.com 2. Dublin’s newest hotel The Maldron Merrion Road Hotel rooms in Dublin have rarely been in such short (and pricey) supply, which is why we’re very much rolling out the red carpet for the newest opening in the city. Having just launched last week, the Maldron Merrion Road is the capital’s latest four-star hotel and brings 140 rooms to its scenic location in the heart of D4. Appealing to the corporate and city break market the seven storey property offers “stunning” panoramic Dublin Bay vistas from Sandymount Strand to Howth while guests can enjoy the Maldron’s signature stylish rooms, dine at their Grain and Grill Restaurant or order a coffee to go from their Red Bean Roastery. Take advantage from hot B&B rates from €139. maldronhotelmerrionroad.com 3. Wendy Wu Looking for a dream getaway to Asia? Irish operator Sunway has teamed up with the UK’s leading escorted holiday operator Wendy Wu to offer their premium, guided tours for the Irish market. Wendy Wu is known for its all-inclusive offerings with rates including everything from all food and accommodation on the ground down to visas which are sorted by their own red tape team. Expect that to be reflected in the price which puts Wendy Wu very much in the luxury market; if you fancy soaking in the cherry blossoms or scaling Mount Fuji in Japan, their classic eight-day tour to the county costs €4800 excl. flights; sunway.ie 4. Hidden Haven Hidden Haven is luxury lodge, nestled in a stunning swathe of countryside between Gougane Barra and Glengarriff. I’ve just been tipped off to a pretty dreamy new getaway in West Cork! The Hidden Haven is a beautifully designed and just launched luxury lodge, nestled in a stunning swathe of countryside between Gougane Barra and Glengarriff. Overlooking its own lake, the design and comfort led property features everything from organic sheets on its supersized king bed, a wood burning stove, claw toe tub bath and outdoor barbecue. If you tear yourself away from those views, pick some blueberries at the onsite organic farm. The Hidden Haven is accepting bookings for three-night minimums with rates from €250 per night. 5. Staycation deals November typically offers some of the best hotel rates of the year and I’ve uncovered a few hotel deals this week with rates which may give you a hint of nostalgia! The Mills Inn in Ballyvourney have winter rates from €120 per night (and that doesn’t increase for weekend stays), while if you still have a Blue Book voucher knocking about, Butler House in Kilkenny are by reckoning the cheapest property in the collection with midweek rates this month from just €115!

Bosome Freho DCE Suspended Over “galamsey” Activities – Ghana Business News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/bosome-freho-dce-suspended-over-galamsey-activities-ghana-business-news/ Yaw Danso President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has suspended Mr Yaw Danso, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Bosome Freho, over his alleged involvement in illegal mining “galamsey” activities in the District. This comes after the leaking of a video in which he was allegedly encouraging “galamsey” activities in the area. The suspension is contained in a letter from Mr Dan Botwe, Minister for Local Government and Regional Organisation, which asked the DCE to step aside for investigations into the audio. The Minister stressed in the letter that the suspension was to pave way for investigations to verify the authenticity of the tape. President Akufo-Addo in his resolve to address the illegal mining menace, has called on all stakeholders, including government officials, chiefs and community members, to join in the fight. The President, at a recent meeting with traditional leaders and Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executives, among other government officials, warned that persons caught in the act would face full rigours of the law. EVE SIMMONS: I Saw Deliciously Ella As Beautiful Successful And Happy Daily Mail
EVE SIMMONS: I Saw Deliciously Ella As Beautiful Successful And Happy Daily Mail
EVE SIMMONS: I Saw Deliciously Ella As Beautiful, Successful And Happy – Daily Mail https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/eve-simmons-i-saw-deliciously-ella-as-beautiful-successful-and-happy-daily-mail/ A few weeks ago I approached Deliciously Ella to come on The Mail on Sunday’s Medical Minefield podcast. She declined, which was a shame – but unsurprising, given the delicate subject. I wanted the hugely successful food blogger-turned-wellness-guru – real name Ella Mills – to elaborate on comments she’d made in a recent magazine interview, hitting back at her critics. In particular, she addressed allegations made in a 2016 BBC3 documentary, Clean Eating’s Dirty Secrets: that her vegan, dairy, sugar and gluten-free recipes may have contributed to cases of orthorexia, an eating disorder characterised by an obsession with only consuming ‘healthy’ foods. She felt this was unfair – after all, the controversial term ‘clean eating’ was never a term she’d used herself, she said (more on how accurate that is later). Ella claimed her intention was to promote a relaxed approach to food. ‘Do what works for you,’ was her ‘nuanced’ message. Moreover, she was hurt by the allegations. Her critics were making personal attacks on a young woman who was offering ideas for healthy living. I didn’t entirely agree, and wanted to discuss why. That interview was not the first time Ella has issued these kinds of rebuttals. On author Elizabeth Day’s podcast How To Fail, in March 2020, Ella claimed she and other female food writers who advocated similar approaches had been treated ‘like witches’. A few weeks ago I approached Deliciously Ella (pictured) to come on The Mail on Sunday’s Medical Minefield podcast. She declined, which was a shame – but unsurprising, given the delicate subject One female journalist who’d levelled criticism at Ella ‘obviously hates me… she thinks I’m the devil’, she said on How To Fail. She reiterated a point she has made often, that she ‘is not about’ weight loss or looks. But I don’t think it’s quite as simple as that. I don’t question Ella’s intentions. However, some young women did become obsessive about her kind of diet advice, taking it to extremes. I know this, because I was one of them. And over the years I’ve spoken to others who have had similar experiences. Ella wasn’t the only food guru whose content was being misused by some vulnerable young women. There was the popular Hemsley sisters, who wrote two cookbooks full of recipes free from gluten, grains and sugar. And nutritional therapist Madeleine Shaw, whose blog advised readers that gluten was ‘like sandpaper for the gut’. These influencers have faded from the spotlight. Ella, meanwhile, is arguably more successful than ever – and still talking about clean eating (albeit to bring an end to the conversation). And I think this subject is, at the very least, worthy of more reflection. It is easy to misunderstand eating disorders and assume they are always about weight loss. They are complex, resulting from a combination of genetic factors and difficult experiences, as well as environmental triggers. I saw Ella as beautiful, successful and happy – everything I wanted to be. Slavishly following her way of eating gave me a sense of control, at a time when life felt unstable and chaotic. I became so unwell due to my anorexia that, at the age of 24, I was hospitalised. Luckily I recovered. Many don’t. I suppose Ella’s unwillingness to speak to me about this – and the role I feel she inadvertently played – hurts. Ella’s blog, launched in 2012 when she was just 21, became a phenomenon. Her debut cookbook, published in 2015, sold a record-breaking 32,000 copies in its first week alone, and there were four more after that. There’s now an eponymous range of snacks, stocked in more than 5,000 UK stores. The Deliciously Ella app, Feel Better, launched in 2019 and has been downloaded 100,000 times. She has many millions of followers across all social media platforms. Deliciously Ella Ltd is expected to turn over £20 million this year. I wanted the hugely successful food blogger-turned-wellness-guru – real name Ella Mills – to elaborate on comments she’d made in a recent magazine interview, hitting back at her critics. Pictured: Eve Simmons At its core, her message is about the health benefits of the ingredients she uses. The recipes published on her blog and in her first book explained how to make pasta from ‘spiralised’ courgette ribbons and cakes with sweet potato rather than eggs or butter. Her Double Chocolate Cheesecake Brownies consist of mashed dates, avocado, banana and raw cacao powder. Unlike conventional brownies, which are ‘not the kind of food you’d imagine could ever nurture your body’, her version is ‘the world’s healthiest’. She adds on her blog: ‘You can enjoy as many of them as you like without any negative effects – no bloated stomach, no heart palpitations, no blood sugar crashes, no nothing…’ A hot chocolate, made with home-made almond milk, date syrup, raw cacao and almond butter, provides ‘an incredible boost of disease-fighting antioxidants, as well as lots of the happy-hormone serotonin, which acts as a natural antidepressant’. Her book claims that foods she uses make the skin ‘glow’ and the hair ‘amazing’. I interpreted her words as rules to live by… with disastrous consequences Then there is her remarkable personal story. Her way of eating, she claims, helped her recover from a little-understood nervous system condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which causes dizziness, fainting, fatigue and chest pains. Overnight, she gave up ‘all meat, dairy, sugar, gluten, anything processed and all chemicals and additives’. It was ‘a pretty drastic change’ but ‘eating this way has allowed me to take control of my illness, stopping the constant pain, restoring my energy and giving me my life back again’. Eighteen months after starting ‘this lifestyle’, she’d been able to come off all medication. ‘I feel so incredible, better than ever really!’ she wrote. I remember reading this, looking at her gorgeous smile, glossy hair and tiny waist and thinking: ‘I want some of what she’s having.’ Slavishly following her way of eating gave me a sense of control, at a time when life felt unstable and chaotic. I became so unwell due to my anorexia that, at the age of 24, I was hospitalised. Luckily I recovered. Many don’t. I suppose Ella’s unwillingness to speak to me about this – and the role I feel she inadvertently played – hurts And there were other health claims. Sugar was ‘inflammatory’ and ‘bad’. The calcium in milk ‘has several negative impacts on our bodies’ and ‘isn’t as great for your bones as most of us have been brought up to believe’. Adding ‘some cheese to a baked potato’ or ‘some milk to your tea’ is ‘just not a problem… if you want to include these then please do’. She was ‘not here to point fingers or encourage feelings of guilt’. But in the same breath ‘saying goodbye’ to dairy – and processed foods, gluten and refined sugar – ‘will really help you look and feel your best’. In a social-media post, she revealed that when she had been unwell in 2011, she’d been so bloated she looked more pregnant than when she was actually pregnant (Ella now has two daughters, aged two and three). She posted two pictures to prove this. While reminding her readers that ‘Deliciously Ella isn’t about aesthetics’, she claimed: ‘It was how I looked almost all the time… when I was really ill, it was so swollen and painful and made me so insecure, I felt as though I’d lost control of my body totally.’ She claimed food was key to her transformation: ‘There was nothing magic here, just learning to look after my body through plant-based food, nourishing meals, yoga, meditation, help from a nutritionist, probiotics, time, patience and self-love.’ Many would say following her recommendations had only positive effects. But I interpreted them as rules to live by, which had disastrous consequences. I eliminated dairy, sugar and processed food from my diet. Next I stopped eating gluten, which inevitably meant cutting out bread and pasta altogether (the gluten-free options were too expensive). Anything breadcrumbed or battered was obviously out – as were sweet treats. Eventually, most meals were plates of plain vegetables. Within six months, I’d lost a fifth of my body weight. During my recovery, in 2016, I launched a website called Not Plant Based. The aim was to dispel diet myths and support people with eating disorders. I quickly discovered I wasn’t the only one who’d been taken to a darker place by healthy eating advice. At its core, her message is about the health benefits of the ingredients she uses And in a striking number of the stories, Deliciously Ella and other influencers were mentioned. Other women have named Ella publicly, in online articles in which they describe their descent into orthorexia. Actor Daniela Isaacs wrote that she sought out clean eating as a means of easing symptoms of coeliac disease – which causes the body to overreact to gluten. She wrote: ‘I read Deliciously Ella’s story about having an autoimmune disease like me, which she cured by changing her diet, so I related to her. ‘I cut out sugar, dairy and my gluten-free substitutes like bread and pasta.’ Daniela dropped from a size eight to a six, lost her periods for a year and became ‘scared’ of eating out. In 2017, I interviewed Ella for Not Plant Based, in which she said she wanted to have an ‘open and honest’ conversation about all this. I revealed to her the role I felt the clean-eating trend played in the development of my eating disorder. But Ella clearly felt she had nothing to do with it. ‘On everything I write, it says, please do what works for you,’ she told me. These disclaimers, she said, are ‘the best you can do before it gets a little policing of people. Take a baking book, with cake recipes. There’s nothing saying, ‘Please ...
