What Channel Is Eagles Vs. Cardinals On Today? Time, TV Schedule For NFL Week 5 Game – Sporting News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/what-channel-is-eagles-vs-cardinals-on-today-time-tv-schedule-for-nfl-week-5-game-sporting-news/ The Eagles, the NFL’s last unbeaten team, will put their perfect mark on the line when they face the Cardinals on Sunday. At 4-0, Philadelphia is off to its best start since 2004, a season that ended with a trip to Super Bowl 39. This time around, the Eagles’ successes have been a product of the play of third-year quarterback Jalen Hurts and a defense that leads the NFL with 16.0 sacks and 10 takeaways. Through four games, Hurts has completed 66.7 percent of his passes, thrown four touchdowns and rushed for an additional four touchdowns, bringing his total to eight total touchdowns and just two interceptions nearly a quarter of the way through the season. In Philly’s Week 4 win over Jacksonville, the defense forced five turnovers, four of which were fumbles lost by former No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence. The Eagles will have their hands full with the Cardinals’ former No. 1 overall pick, Kyler Murray, who presents plenty of danger with his legs and his arm. In a Week 4 win over Carolina, Murray passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another. — NFL (@NFL) October 2, 2022 Through four games, Murray is averaging a career-low 3.8 yards per carry, but the numbers don’t show how he’s using his legs to keep plays alive. That will come in handy against Philadelphia’s pass rush. Will Philadelphia remain perfect? Or will Murray and the Cardinals bring the Eagles’ momentum to a halt? Here is everything you need to know about tuning in to the Week 5 showdown. Branding 101 From 007 And Dr. No The Washington Post
Branding 101 From 007 And Dr. No The Washington Post
Branding 101 From 007 — And ‘Dr. No’ – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/branding-101-from-007-and-dr-no-the-washington-post/ “Bond told the story in simple terms, with good men and bad men, like an adventure story out of a book.” — Ian Fleming, Dr. No (1958) “Dr. No” is a simple movie shot on a poverty-stricken budget, starring a relative unknown, based on the sixth book in a series and released 60 years ago to a mixed critical response — not least from Ian Fleming who, according to biographer Andrew Lycett, left an early screening “looking sad and distracted as he tried to summon enthusiasm for the carefree, gun-toting character he had created.” Yet for all these inauspicious omens, “Dr. No” was not just a hit in its own right — taking more than 16 times its sub-$1 million cost — it inaugurated one of the most valuable and venerable franchises in cinema. Since October 5, 1962, Eon’s 25 canonical Bond films (those excluding the 1967 “Casino Royale” and “Never Say Never Again”) have grossed billions of dollars, secured the stardom of dozens of actors and defined an image of espionage that Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service is still shaking off. Significantly, “Dr. No” also created one of capitalism’s most successful and sophisticated brand collaboration ecosystems. Over six decades, scores of companies have placed their products into James Bond films (more than 30 appear in “No Time to Die”), and even brands that don’t pay to play are not above hijacking 007 to flog everything from Barclaycards to Brooke Bond tea: The commercial appeal of a handsome, debonaire, alpha-male spy requires no explanation, but the “Bond Collaborative Universe” empowers also a remarkable network effect, where mid-market brands like Heineken, Dell and Moscot bask in the reflected glory not just of 007, but of luxury marques like Bollinger, Omega and Leica. It’s hard to think of many similarly scaled and sustained brand ecosystems in cinema, or elsewhere — save, perhaps, global tentpoles such as the Olympics or World Cup. Exploring Bond movies through the prism of branding is apt, for Fleming’s novels glitter with luxury marques. Bond drives a Bentley, shoots a Leica, wears a Rolex, putts with Penfold Hearts, bathes in Floris bath essence, zhushes his hair in Pinaud Elixir and smokes cigarettes specially blended by Morland & Co. of Grosvenor Street. Naturally, not all of 007’s tastes are so exotic: He uses a Ronson lighter, drinks Gordon’s gin and shaves with a Gillette. Yet no brand was too arcane for Fleming to specify: The elevator in Dr. No’s lair, Bond observes in the novel, was manufactured by Waygood Otis. Although Fleming was pragmatic about his (unpaid) corporate specificity (“I think it is stupid to invent bogus names for products that are household words”), the brands he selected pack a trifold punch: as markers of class, as anchors to realism and as shortcuts to aspiration — initially for a country fogged by austerity, and later for a culture fixated on consumption. But what of Bond as a brand in itself? According to the excellent analysis of Tony Bennett and Janet Woollacott, because the early Bond novels were “installed ambiguously between … ‘literature’ and ‘popular fiction’,” they had a limited readership that was “largely restricted to the metropolitan literary intelligentsia.” Indeed, in 1955, Fleming considered killing Bond off because the novels paid so little. Sales picked up in 1957 after The Daily Express serialized and strip-cartooned “From Russia with Love,” but it was the release of the “Dr. No” movie that transformed the books — and Bond — into a phenomenon. As co-producer Harry Saltzman said: “The ‘Dr. No’ book had sold virtually nothing when we made the film. Then I went to Pan and suggested they print an extra 500,000 copies. They laughed at me. And, do you know, in the next seven months, they sold one and a half million copies.” By producing a film that was sartorial, sadistic, seductive and sly, Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli simply dismissed the dichotomy between “literature” and “popular fiction,” presenting high-brow viewers a frisson of rough, and cheap-seat gawkers a glimpse of the good life. Saltzman and Broccoli also coded a brand DNA that would outlast them both: As I explore below, almost everything that still makes Bond Bond is to be found in their production of “Dr. No.” * * * 00:12 — Gun Barrel Opening It’s hard to overstate the brand impact of “Dr. No’s” opening which, like a burning fuse, primes the audience for the fireworks to come. Designed by Maurice Binder, who used a pinhole camera to film down the barrel of a pistol, the sequence actually stars stuntman Bob Simmons, an oddity that wouldn’t be rectified until Connery reshot the scene for “Thunderball.” “Dr. No’s” gun-barrel sequence achieves several things simultaneously: It trains the eye to trust the camera; it establishes Bond in the center of his own stark stage; and it melds action, elegance, tension and death. It’s a strikingly confident kickoff for a neophyte production. Twenty-five films later, it still packs a Pavlovian punch. 00:27 — James Bond Theme While there are many more ubiquitous audio brands than Monty Norman’s James Bond Theme — the Intel bongs, perhaps, or the Netflix “ta-dum” — few are as well loved or long-lived. Setting aside its undeniable musical merit, the utility of the Bond theme as a sonic brand derives, in part, from its interlocking elements: the triumphant 11-note horn fanfare; the lush backing strings and tight horn stabs; the brassy, big-band “Stripper”-esque swing tune; and the pantherine guitar riff (plucked by Vic Flick for a £6 fee) which conjures Bond as completely as Prokofiev’s Peter. With so many musical cards to play, 007’s sonic deck can be shuffled almost indefinitely. Not only can just a few notes from any one of these elements evoke the entire Bond universe, but each has proved adaptable to a range of cultural styles, music trends and dramatic requirements. Adding depth and longevity to the sonic brand, components of the theme are woven into every Bond song since Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger” — some more subtly (Billie Eilish’s “No Time To Die”) than others (Tom Jones’s “Thunderball”). 00:38 — Title Sequence Echoing Piet Mondrian’s “Broadway Boogie,” Kurt Schwerdtfeger’s Bauhaus light shows and Reid Miles’s Blue Note record covers, the graphical titles of “Dr. No” are as potent as its gun-barrel opening. And then, as type and shape give way to sensual silhouettes, we get a taste of the “sex” in the “sex and violence” to come. It’s a testament to Maurice Binder’s vision, that after his death in 1991 (following his work on “License To Kill”), “Dr. No’s” titles have been repeatedly referenced, even unto “No Time To Die.” 06:33 — Le Cercle, Les Ambassadeurs It’s appropriate that we first find Bond in an elegant and exclusive casino, since high-stakes gambling is both a metaphor for his fieldwork and the best explanation of how he funds so lavish a lifestyle. From “Dr. No” on, the franchise returned regularly to casinos, with Bond displaying an innate mastery of many games of chance, including: craps, sic bo, backgammon, blackjack, roulette and one-card draw. Disappointingly, while the novel “Casino Royale” has Bond besting Le Chiffre at chemin de fer, in the 2006 movie they play the fashionable if pedestrian Texas hold’em poker. 07:59 — Bond, James Bond In a flawless detail of sonic branding, Connery’s iconic introduction — “Bond, James Bond” — is not merely underscored by the “James Bond Theme,” it’s punctuated by the click of his lighter: This now legendary sequence set a vertiginous bar for every incantation of the spell — as Daniel Craig admitted: “Saying that fucking line! I mean, if I have to say it, I’ll say it once to myself — and then you’re on set and you think ‘I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine,’ and then you say it, and it’s like the weight of it. I try to be quite cool about these things, but it’s impossible. I don’t know how many takes we did at the end of ‘Casino Royale’ but literally there are takes with ‘The name’s Bond’ like I’m a 13-year-old whose voice is breaking.” 07:59 — Black Tie Our first canonical vision of Bond has him in a dinner suit (cut by Anthony Sinclair) that features the same silk turnback cuffs favored by Ian Fleming. From this scene, the silhouette of a black-tied Bond was established as a key brand asset, and every 007 since has appeared in the conspicuous and impractical uniform of the gentleman spy. All of which is rather ironic, given what Fleming told Ken Purdy in 1964: “I quite deliberately made him rather anonymous. … This was to enable the reader to identify with him. People have only to put their own clothes on Bond and build him into whatever sort of person they admire. If you read my books, you’ll find that I don’t actually describe him at all.” It’s persistently rumored that actors playing 007 are (contractually?) precluded from wearing black tie in other movies. This stricture may explain Pierce Brosnan’s ridiculous untied white tie in the 1999 remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair.” 09:39 — Universal Exports We discover 007’s cover story as he exits an elevator and walks toward the offices of “Universal Exports” — a running gag that still works because, unlike Britain’s actual empire, the sun hasn’t yet set on Bond’s showboat diplomacy. As he tells Honey in the novel: “It’s like this. I’m a sort of policeman. They send me out from London when there’s something odd going on somewhere in the world that isn’t anybody else’s business.” Bond’s ability to export (fictional) hard and (actual) soft power was celebrated in 2012 when Queen Elizabeth II “leapt” out of a helicopter alongside Craig’s 007 to open the London Olympics — a collaboration that illustrated both the monarchy’s confidence and the real-life symbiosis between Bond and Brand Britannia. Indias Central Bank Plans To Launch Digital Rupee CBDC Cryptonews
India’s Central Bank Plans To Launch Digital Rupee CBDC – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/indias-central-bank-plans-to-launch-digital-rupee-cbdc-cryptonews/ Source: AdobeStock / mrinal The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon launch pilot tests for its upcoming digital rupee in a bid to increase awareness around its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The country’s central bank announced the news on Friday, detailing that the digital rupee will be available for specific use cases during the pilot. In a statement, the RBI said the pilot program will help create awareness around the planned features of the digital rupee. “It explains the objectives, choices, benefits, and risks of issuing a CBDC in India. The note also seeks to explain the Reserve Bank’s approach towards the introduction of the CBDC,” the central bank reportedly said. The RBI has also released a concept note for the digital rupee, which talks about key aspects of the CBDC, including its technology and design, potential use cases of the digital rupee, issuance mechanisms, and more. In addition, it explores how the introduction of a CBDC would impact the banking system, monetary policy, financial stability, and privacy issues. “As the extent and scope of such pilot launches expand, RBI will continue to communicate about the specific features and benefits of e₹, from time to time,” the RBI said. The country’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had previously announced the launch of the digital rupee in her 2022-23 budget speech earlier this year. The announcement marked another clear indication that the Indian government is determined to launch a CBDC. Addressing the Indian parliament, Sitharaman was quoted saying that the digital rupee will “lead to a more efficient and cheaper currency management system. It is therefore proposed to introduce the digital rupee using blockchain and other technology to be issued by the Reserve Bank of India.” The RBI’s Harsh Stance Against Cryptocurrencies Despite its push for a CBDC, the RBI has long maintained a harsh stance toward digital assets, arguing that the nascent asset class has no underlying value. The central bank has constantly warned investors and the government against crypto, citing volatility as well as risks of fraud and scams.  Earlier this year in July, the central bank asked the Indian Government to ban cryptocurrencies in the country, citing the “destabilizing” effect of this asset class on monetary stability. “The RBI is of the view that cryptocurrencies should be prohibited,” Sitharaman said in Parliament on July 18. At the time, Sitharaman clarified that the RBI does not view cryptocurrencies as currencies, saying that every modern currency needs to be issued by the government or central bank. She claimed the value of cryptocurrencies rests solely on the speculations and expectations of high returns, which is why they have de-stabilising effects.

This Cruise Line Is Gaining Huge Popularity In The U.S. And Is Taking On Major Players – Travel Off Path https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/this-cruise-line-is-gaining-huge-popularity-in-the-u-s-and-is-taking-on-major-players-travel-off-path/ Last Updated 2 mins ago MSC Cruises is expanding in the States and taking on major players in the industry. European-owned cruise line MSC Cruises announced this week that it would be adding one luxury liner to its major cruise ship hubs in the U.S. Under MSC’s updated plan, 5 ships in total will be operating out of Port Miami, Port Canaveral in Florida, as well as its port in New York City just in time for the holiday travel season at the end of 2023. Here are all the details we have so far. New Ship To Set Sail By Late 2023: MSC Divina The newly announced ocean liner operating from the United States will be the company’s 3,502-passenger, the MSC Divina, which will be operating out of Port Miami. This ship has previously sailed in the region and has served cruisers in North America. MSC’s Expansion For In The United States MSC’s new cruise line for the U.S. market means that the cruising company will be expanding its itineraries throughout the Atlantic regions of Bermuda, New England, Canada, the Caribbean, and The Bahamas for the 2023/2024 travel season. Back in March of this year, MSC announced that it will be launching its first voyage out of New York City in early 2023, which will be the 4th MSC ocean liner to sail out of the United States. The three MSC liners currently in operation are two in Port Miami and another operating from Port Canaveral. The new ship launch will make for two vessels operating out of the New York City port. President of MSC Cruises U.S., Rubén Rodríguez, made the following statement during Thursday’s announcement: “Bringing more ships to the U.S. allows us to offer a wide variety of itineraries, adding new destinations and providing more opportunities for travelers to discover our unique international flavor.” “It’s especially exciting to know how many of those guests will experience Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and see firsthand how we’ve embraced the island’s natural beauty, and how committed we are to sustainability. Caring for the ocean and showing our guests the true extent of its wonders drives everything we do at MSC Cruises,” he continued. MSC Vessels: North American Itinerary For 2023 To review, here’s the new schedule for MSC’s operations out of North America by late 2023: New York City: New York’s Brooklyn-based port will see the likings of the MSC Meraviglia, a 4,500-passenger-sized cruiser. Upon launch from its new American port next summer, it will take cruisers throughout destinations in New England and Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI) before heading down to Bermuda and arriving back in New York City. The fall and winter itinerary for 2023 also has the liner sailing south to Bermuda, Florida, and on to The Bahamas. Bookings for 2023 are currently available on MSC’s official website. Port Canaveral: Operating out of Orlando, the new 4,540-passenger-sized MSC Seashore liner will be replacing its sister ship, the MSC Seaside. Cruise itineraries for 2023 and 2024 will include anything from 2 nights to 2 weeks, taking cruisers to destinations throughout the Caribbean (Jamaica, The Bahamas, Mexican Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and more).  Port Miami: The luxurious 4,540-passenger-sized fleet, the MSC Seascape, will offer week-long Caribbean cruises out of Port Miami throughout the year. The MSC Magnifica, a 2.500-passenger liner, will offer some shorter cruises sailing out of Miami to The Bahamas and Key West.  Finally, the MSC Divina will have everything from 3 to 11-night cruises sailing out of Miami by late next year. The longer itineraries will sail to cruise destinations in Central and South America for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. MSC currently has 19 ships operating in ports around the world, and this 5th U.S.-based cruise ship will mean that almost a quarter of its vessels will be sailing out of North America. Please note that vaccinations are currently no longer required to be on board an MSC ship. You can see the website for the latest details on the company’s travel restrictions guidance. Quantum Technology Research In Chicago Could Lead To Safer Internet – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/quantum-technology-research-in-chicago-could-lead-to-safer-internet-the-washington-post/ Quantum research at a University of Chicago lab could help prevent hacking and connect a future web of supercomputers October 9, 2022 at 6:00 a.m. EDT Laser heads, bottom, and laser controllers, top, at the quantum computing lab at the University of Chicago’s Eckhardt Research Center. (Taylor Glascock for The Washington Post) CHICAGO — The secret to a more secure and powerful internet — one potentially impossible to hack — might be residing in a basement closet seemingly suited for brooms and mops. The 3-foot-wide cubby, in the bowels of a University of Chicago laboratory, contains a slim rack of hardware discreetly firing quantum particles into a fiber-optic network. The goal: to use nature’s smallest objects to share information under encryption that cannot be broken — and eventually to connect a network of quantum computers capable of herculean calculations. The modest trappings of Equipment Closet LL211A belie the importance of a project at the forefront of one of the world’s hottest technology competitions. The United States, China and others are vying to harness the bizarre properties of quantum particles to process information in powerful new ways — technology that could confer major economic and national-security benefits to the countries that dominate it. Quantum research is so important to the future of the internet that it is drawing new federal funding, including from the recently adopted Chips and Science Act. That’s because, if it pans out, the quantum internet could safeguard financial transactions and health-care data, prevent identity theft and stop hostile state hackers in their tracks. Just this past week, three physicists shared the Nobel Prize for quantum research that helped pave the way for this future internet. Quantum research still has plenty of obstacles to overcome before it reaches widespread use. But banks, health-care companies and others are starting to run experiments on the quantum internet. Some industries are also tinkering with early-stage quantum computers to see whether they might eventually crack problems that current computers can’t, such as discovering new pharmaceuticals to treat intractable disease. Grant Smith, a graduate student on the University of Chicago’s quantum research team, said it’s too soon to imagine all of the potential applications. “When people first made the rudimentary internets connecting research-level computers and universities and national labs, they couldn’t have predicted e-commerce,” he said during a recent tour of the university’s labs. The study of quantum physics began in the early 20th century, when scientists discovered that the universe’s tiniest objects — atoms and subatomic particles — behave in ways unlike matter in the large-scale world, such as appearing to be in multiple places at the same time. Those discoveries, called the first quantum revolution, led to new technologies such as lasers and the atomic clock. But research now is bringing scientists closer to harnessing more of the quantum world’s peculiar powers. David Awschalom, a professor at University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and leader of the quantum team, calls this the second quantum revolution. The field is “trying to engineer the way nature behaves at its most fundamental level to our world, and to exploit these behaviors for new technologies and applications,” he said. Existing computers and communication networks store, process and transmit information by breaking it down into long streams of bits, which are typically electrical or optical pulses representing a zero or one. Quantum particles, also known as quantum bits, or qubits, can exist as zeros and ones at the same time, or in any position between, a flexibility known as “superposition” that allows them to process information in new ways. Some physicists compare them to a spinning coin that is simultaneously in a heads and tails state. Quantum bits can also exhibit “entanglement,” where two or more particles are inextricably linked and mirror each other exactly, even when separated by great physical distance. Albert Einstein called this “spooky action at a distance.” The closet hardware connects to a 124-mile fiber-optic network running from the university’s campus on Chicago’s South Side to two federally funded labs in the western suburbs that are collaborating on the research — Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The team is using photons — which are quantum particles of light — to dispatch encryption keys through the network, to see how well they travel through fibers that pass under highways, bridges and toll booths. Quantum particles are extremely delicate and have the propensity to malfunction at the slightest disturbance, such as a vibration or temperature change, so sending them over long, real-world distances is tricky. In the university’s basement closet, a piece of hardware built by the Japanese company Toshiba emits pairs of entangled photons and sends one from each pair through the network to Argonne, which is 30 miles away, in Lemont, Ill. One encryption key is encoded on a string of photon pairs. Because the pairs are entangled, they are fully in sync with each other. “In a sense, you can view them as a single piece of information,” Awschalom said. When the traveling photons reach Argonne, scientists there measure them and extract the key. Anyone attempting to hack into the network to intercept the key will fail, Awschalom said, because the laws of quantum mechanics say that any attempt to observe particles in a quantum state automatically alters the particles and destroys the information being transmitted. It also alerts the sender and receiver about the attempted eavesdropping. This is one reason scientists believe the technology holds such promise. “There are huge technical difficulties to overcome, but you could argue this could become as important as the tech revolution of the 20th century that gave us the laser and the transistor and atomic clock and, therefore, GPS and the internet,” Steven Girvin, a physics professor at Yale, said about recent discoveries in quantum technology. In a lab next to the closet, Awschalom and his colleagues are attempting to develop new devices that will help the photons carry information across greater distances. The room is a cramped tangle of millions of dollars of laboratory equipment, lasers and a photo of Thomas the Tank Engine, because one of the instruments makes a constant chugging noise. “It’s for, I guess, like, comedic value,” graduate student Cyrus Zeledon said. One problem they’re trying to fix: As the tiny particles of light travel through the network’s glass fibers, imperfections in the glass cause the light to attenuate after a certain distance. So the researchers are attempting to develop devices that could catch and store information from the light particles as they travel and then send the information onward again with a fresh particle — like a photonic Pony Express. Wearing purple latex gloves to avoid damaging the surface, Zeledon held up a tiny circuit board containing two chips of silicon carbide that he and his colleagues are testing as a device to store and control information from quantum bits. Later that day, Zeledon was planning to cool the chips to super low temperatures and examine them under a microscope, to look for quantum bits that he had implanted in the chips that he could then manipulate with microwaves into exchanging information with photons. On the other end of the network on a recent morning, Argonne scientist Joe Heremans, who was previously Awschalom’s student, apologized for the loud chugging sound also reverberating around his lab. Where was his picture of Thomas the Tank Engine? “We attempt to be slightly more professional here,” he joked. Heremans and his colleagues are also trying to develop new devices and materials to help photons carry quantum information across greater distances. Synthetic diamonds are one material that holds promise, he said, nodding toward a reactor that was growing diamonds at the glacial pace of nanometers per hour. Federal funding from the National Quantum Initiative Act, passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump in 2018, recently helped the lab buy a second reactor that will grow diamonds faster. The Chips and Science Act, signed by President Biden in August, is providing additional support for research and development that will bolster quantum efforts. In a corner of his lab, Heremans pointed to a Toshiba machine identical to the one at the University of Chicago. From there, a jumble of colorful wires carries signals to and from the network, which, after leaving the lab, runs in a short loop under a nearby Ikea and Buffalo Wild Wings before shooting out in either direction to the university and Fermilab. Scientists are experimenting with similar testbeds in Boston, New York, Maryland and Arizona. Experimental networks also exist in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and China. The goal is to someday connect all of these testbeds, via fiber and satellite links, into a fledgling quantum internet spanning the United States and eventually, the globe. As the network grows, it could ideally be used not only for sending encrypted information, but for connecting quantum computers to raise their processing power, the way the cloud does for current computers. “The idea of a quantum internet is something that is very much in the process of being born,” Smith said.

For Dot Schoch, who celebrated her 100th birthday this month, that lifestyle begins with an exercise regimen. “Every morning when I come in to work, Dot’s in our fitness area on a stationary bike,” said Kim Swise, director of sales for Cedarhurst of Pekin assisted living facility, where Schoch now resides. “She’s always got her eyes closed and she’s pedaling away. She stays active, and a body in motion stays in motion.” Schoch, of Pekin, said she has always done something to keep up her physical condition, focusing on activities like swimming and bicycling. She has also always been aware of the importance of a healthy diet that featured fresh produce grown in the garden she and her late husband, Larry, used to keep. And she believes that one secret to her longevity and continued health is that she knew what not to do. “I’ve never smoked, and I’ve never drank,” Schoch said. Although she no longer travels, some of her favorite memories include meeting new people when she and Larry took trips to Europe or to Florida. She also recalls the excitement around her when researchers at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, where she worked for 35 years, discovered a way to manufacture penicillin. “It was all you heard about at work,” Schoch said. “It ended up saving a lot of lives.” More:‘Woo-hoo!’ State-microbe designation would honor penicillin and Peoria In addition to a physically active lifestyle and a proper diet, Schoch believes social activity is a vital part of a long and full life. She is now a fixture at Cedarhurst bingo games and seldom misses a Cedarhurst movie night. “I like the musicals,” Schoch said. “I don’t care for Westerns. John Wayne’s good, but some of the movies are terrible. ‘Gone With the Wind’ is my all-time favorite.” Schoch’s 100th birthday on Oct. 4 began like any other day, with a session in Cedarhurst’s fitness area. From there, she went on to a busy round of meetings, media availabilities, birthday parties, and time with family members. Swise expressed some concern that Schoch might find the day’s busy schedule taxing, but Schoch’s great-niece, Susan Henning, maintained that she would have found a way to keep her social calendar full even without the milestone. “When we started the discussion about Dot moving into assisted living, I asked if there was one in the Peoria area where she had a lot of friends,” Henning said. ”She said, ‘That doesn’t matter. I can make more friends.’ I thought that was really sweet.”

Nord Stream: Russian TV Embraces Tucker Carlson’s Hints Of US Sabotage – Business Insider https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/nord-stream-russian-tv-embraces-tucker-carlsons-hints-of-us-sabotage-business-insider/ Russian state TV channels have embraced Tucker Carlson’s comments about the Nord Stream pipelines. The Fox News host suggested that the US was behind the damage to the two underwater gas pipelines. The Russian channels repeated his claims at least 12 times on Wednesday, according to The Washington Post. Loading Something is loading. Thanks for signing up! Access your favorite topics in a personalized feed while you’re on the go. Russian state television channels have seized on claims made by Fox News host Tucker Carlson that suggested the US may have been behind the suspected attack on the Nord Stream pipelines. Russian television programs replayed or discussed portions of his commentary at least 12 times on Wednesday, according to The Washington Post. Carlson hinted on his Fox News program on Tuesday that the US sabotaged the two pipelines running from Russia to Germany. The host said during his show: “Where might some Americans have gotten the notion that the Biden administration might have been involved directly or through a proxy in the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines?” Carlson pointed to a tweet from a Polish European parliamentarian and a statement made by President Joe Biden in February opposing the activation of the pipeline to suggest that he may have had some role in destroying it. Russia previously said that the damaged area of the pipeline is “fully under the control” of US intelligence agencies, per Reuters. It also said the damage caused to the pipelines was likely directed by state-sponsored “terrorism.” Neither Russia nor Carlson offered any evidence that the US was involved in the pipeline leaks, however. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) issued a statement saying the leaks were of “deep concern,” and that if the damage was caused by sabotage, it would be met with a “united and determined response.” The pipelines were not operational, but they contained natural gas that was bubbling to the surface, creating patches of churning sea several hundred yards in size.  Sabotage suspicions have intensified in recent days. Sweden’s security police issued a statement on Tuesday, which said: “The crime scene investigation that the Security Police conducted at the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines is now complete. The investigation has strengthened the suspicions of gross sabotage.” But no clear evidence has emerged to prove who might be behind any attack on the pipelines that Russia and European partners spent billions of dollars building. Adm. Sir Ben Key, first sea lord and chief of the British naval staff, said he would “steer clear of direct attribution” because the cause was not “at all clear.”  The leak was first detected on September 27. The following day, the pipeline operator said there was “unprecedented” damage to three of the four lines that compose Nord Stream 1 and 2. Four leaks have now been found — two in Swedish waters and two in Danish waters — in roughly 250 feet of water.

With Rents Rising Fast, Texas Homeless Shelters See More Families Seeking Help – KHOU.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/with-rents-rising-fast-texas-homeless-shelters-see-more-families-seeking-help-khou-com/ Amid rising housing costs and relentless inflation, an increasing number of Texans are struggling to pay their rent and stay in their homes. DALLAS — Jade Barron doesn’t know how she and her six kids will ever get out of a downtown homeless shelter. For three years, Barron and her four children had crammed into a one-bedroom apartment in North Dallas — the $850 rent was what Barron could afford as a massage therapist. Last year, Barron, 30, gave birth to twins. Finding affordable child care was next to impossible, often prompting Barron to cancel her massage appointments so she could stay home with the kids. Inflation made it more difficult for Barron to afford formula, diapers and wipes. She sold her car to try to make ends meet — but fell behind on rent anyway. When Barron’s landlord told her he planned to raise her rent to $1,400 when her lease was up — Barron said the landlord already had threatened to evict her for unpaid rent — she and her family wound up at the Family Gateway shelter in May. In early September, she faced a conundrum: She’d been offered a job at Dallas County’s public hospital system as a physical therapy aide, but without reliable transportation and affordable child care, she worried that she couldn’t accept it. Even if she did, it probably wouldn’t pay enough to cover an apartment in Dallas — where the median monthly rent for a one-bedroom has jumped from roughly $1,100 a year ago to more than $1,500 today, according to Zillow. “I always thought that people ended up in shelters because they weren’t handling their business,” Barron said. “But I found out … I was handling my business as best I could and I still ended up homeless and in a shelter.” Last year, federal rental assistance, expanded unemployment benefits and a federal moratorium on evictions offered a safety net for lower-income Texans hit hard by economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with rental assistance less plentiful and the other measures expired, soaring rents, unrelenting inflation and rising electricity costs have squeezed Texas renters who were already on the brink — creating doubts for some that they’ll be able to stay in their homes and pushing others into homelessness. More than 522,000 Texas renters — or about 8% of the state’s estimated 6.2 million tenants — said they were behind on payments this summer, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau survey. Of those renters, three out of five feared they would be evicted within two months. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, about 19% of renters earning less than $50,000 per year said they were behind on rent. Homeless shelters in Texas have seen a corresponding jump in demand. A Fort Worth shelter run by the Salvation Army of North Texas can’t hold everyone seeking assistance there, said managing director Jay Dunn. About 40 families are staying at the shelter, and the Salvation Army has placed another 25 in overflow hotel rooms. “Once they fall into it, it’s taking a lot longer because they have to get a much more competitive wage,” Dunn said. “They’ve got to deal with higher costs in a variety of areas in the market in order to sustain themselves.” Families that stay at Salvation Army shelters increasingly need help with food and paying rent and utility bills even when they find a new home, Dunn said. Family Gateway, a Dallas-area nonprofit operating three emergency shelters that can hold up to 100 families, received 3,351 calls from families who needed and qualified for assistance from January to August — almost twice the number it received during the same period last year. Of those, the number of families who said they were on the verge of eviction has quadrupled. More were paying out of pocket to live in hotels — and even more were living in precarious locations like their cars, according to data provided by the shelter. Family Gateway said it routinely has had to place 30 to 40 families in hotel rooms because there isn’t enough room in its shelters. “For folks who are doing well, [increased costs spurred by inflation] are an annoyance,” said Ellen Magnis, president and CEO of Family Gateway. “But for folks who are earning barely enough to survive, an extra $100 a month in rent or an extra $50 a month for gas or any little increase just throws a whole new set of folks off-kilter.” As Texas attracted more residents and employers over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for all kinds of housing skyrocketed. Since the summer of 2021, rents in the state’s largest metropolitan areas have surged by double digits — exacerbating the state’s housing shortage. Estimates vary on how many homes Texas needs to build to satisfy demand. A recent report from Up For Growth said Texas was short at least 322,000 single-family homes and apartments in 2019. Housing is even harder to find for low-income households. Texas has one of the largest gaps in the nation between the number of households considered extremely low income and the number of available affordable homes, according to estimates from the National Low Income Housing Coalition — for every 100 extremely low-income households, there are 29 available rental units. “We don’t want the next Skid Row in our community,” Magnis said. “But that’s where we’re headed if we don’t start figuring out how to build and sustain people in lower-cost living. The shelter system cannot just absorb it.” “Our own private place” The Dallas-Fort Worth region’s sky-high rents also have made it virtually impossible for some newcomers to the area to find a place to live. Heather Dillard, 42, and her 14-year-old daughter relocated from San Angelo to Lewisville, a suburb half an hour northwest of Dallas, in 2021 so Dillard could undergo the last of a series of surgeries to repair serious injuries she suffered when a drunk driver struck her vehicle in 2013, leaving her in a wheelchair for a year. Her surgeon had moved from Austin to Lewisville. Rather than find a new surgeon, Dillard made the eight-hour round trip from San Angelo to the Dallas suburb several times and decided to move there for the final surgery and months of follow-up visits. But Dillard, who works as a singer and music teacher, has struggled to find a two-bedroom home she could afford within a reasonable distance from her doctor’s office. Meanwhile, Dillard stayed in a hotel, which cost $650 to $850 per month — which was less than a one-bedroom apartment in Lewisville. She spent at least $3,000 from her savings and still had to borrow money from family members and get federal rental assistance dollars through a local United Way affiliate to cover nine months while she recuperated and had follow-up visits with her doctor. “It did bother me to a point because I wanted a place for my daughter and I … where we can have our own private place,” Dillard said. The need for housing assistance also is growing in North Texas as housing costs and inflation surge. United Way of Denton County, which distributes the county’s allocation of federal rental assistance funds, received more than 400 applications when it opened the application process for the latest round of funds on Oct. 1, said Gary Henderson, the organization’s CEO. The organization now has a backlog of 2,760 applications for rental assistance, he said. “We’ve never seen 2,760 households reaching out to avoid eviction, to avoid homelessness,” Henderson said. Denton County officials set aside federal stimulus funds to pay for emergency hotel stays for people who recently lost their housing — but those funds dried up in May. That’s when Dillard and her daughter moved into a Salvation Army shelter in Denton, 20 minutes northwest of Lewisville. They’re now on a list for housing through the charity’s rapid rehousing program and still searching for an affordable apartment. They’re trying to put down roots. Dillard is passing out fliers for her budding business giving voice lessons. She also wants to perform again. In an office at the Denton shelter, she sings a few bars in a bluesy croon reminiscent of Norah Jones. She’s looking for a guitarist to accompany her at live gigs in the college town but doesn’t have the necessary gear — she sold her speakers, microphones and other gear earlier in the pandemic to pay the bills. Being without a home has tested her faith, she said, but ultimately strengthened it. “You realize that everybody else around you is going through similar situations,” she said. “Absolutely hating the world” In 2015, when Mary Smith moved into her two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in the Lake Highlands neighborhood in northeast Dallas, her part-time job as a cashier at Home Depot was enough to pay the $800 rent. In April, the property switched hands — and her new landlord told her that if she planned to renew her lease at the end of September, they would hike the rent by $580, a nearly 60% increase over her current $1,000 rent. Smith’s not alone. According to the recent Census Bureau survey, nearly 174,000 renters in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex reported that their landlords had raised their rent by more than $500 within the last 12 months. The drastic jump shocked Smith. Her previous landlord had raised the rent gradually over the years — but never by such a large amount. The new landlord told her that’s what the market would fetch for the unit, Smith said. “When I went into the office to speak with them, they said, no, that is what I have to pay,” Smith said. “They said everybody is gonna pay what the unit is worth.” Smith reached out to a Dallas lawyer who represents tenants facing eviction and asked whether her landlord could legally raise the rent that much for an existing tenant. The response: In Texas, where there’s no statewide rent control law, ...

Camping A New Travel Trend During The National Day Holiday – Global.chinadaily.com.cn https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/camping-a-new-travel-trend-during-the-national-day-holiday-global-chinadaily-com-cn/ A camping area in Beijing. [Photo/IC] 422 million people go on a tour during the National Day holiday, which means travel is back on the menu. Camping, featuring niche tourism with less human contact but keeping closer to nature, has become the height of fashion in vacationing since the outbreak of Covid-19. Ctrip data shows that during the National Day holiday, the orders within camping tourism increased by more than 10 times over the same period last year, of which local orders accounted for nearly 80%. The cost of camping per capita is about 650 yuan, which is about 30% more expensive than for the Mid-Autumn Festival. With such a camping trend, many white tents are protruding from suburban lawns, with a long table full of varied cups, plates, dishes, drinks, and food nearby. Some campers even equip themselves with a barbecue oven, with sausages and burgers sizzling on it. Children are chasing each other while adults are chatting and eating snacks. What a life! When the night comes, someone will hang a yellow light string on the tent, and pick up a guitar to hold a live music concert. Compared with the long trek of interprovincial tourism, camping is not limited by location and, more importantly, the length of the vacation. Now there are impressive packages of camping that have been invented. Camping plus fishing, camping plus paddle yoga, desert camping plus a bonfire party, island camping, and other diverse combinations are sought after by young people. More than that, camping is not confined to nature, it even penetrates into the heart of the iron city. A case to this point is a landmark camping activity launched by Guangzhou Tower in March 2022. By carving out a city camping space with diverse exquisite equipment such as star lights, camping blankets, etc., people can enjoy a panoramic view of the Pearl River. Domestic consumption preferences and travel modes have changed, setting off a new trend of short-distance and high-frequency tourism under the hit of comprehensive factors, such as repeated waves of pandemics, economic downturns, and consumption willingness. The popularity of camping, hiking, and other outdoor tours in the past two years has increased significantly compared with that in 2020 and even before the pandemic. JD data shows that the market size of China’s camping economy will reach 74.75 billion yuan ($10.5 billion) in 2021, with a year-on-year growth of 62.5%. Related varieties also played a role. With the release of “Camping Life” and “Divas Hit the Road Camping Season”, the search frequency of keywords like outdoor and camping on JD Online rose 375% year-on-year. Camping is often a symbol of decent income, good cultivation, and leisure time, but the rapid growth of China’s camping market goes far beyond that. As the pandemic limited the travel radius, micro vacations like camping, which are short in distance and experience-oriented, have gradually become the mainstream of tourism. Moreover, in the wake of the pandemic, there has been an increased focus on healthy lifestyles. This focus on exercise and yearning for nature in turn encourages the development of more ecological, low-carbon, environmentally friendly cultural tourism products, like camping and the surrounding economies it brings. Furthermore, camping not only allows people to temporarily escape the city to enjoy nature, and promote parent-child relationships via nature education, but it also makes people acquire a sense of ritual social clock. Camping, originally a part of outdoor sports, has gradually become a way for urban people to relax and socialize. On the one hand, the demand of urban people for outdoor social interaction does exist despite the normalization of pandemic prevention and control; on the other hand, with the advertisement in short video platforms, camping has been packaged as a sophisticated lifestyle, which has attracted many young people. However, it is not difficult for the young to find that camping is only a way to move urban social scenes to the outdoors. When sitting on the lounge chair and posting photos on social media, they will soon realize camping has nothing to do with outdoor activities but playing on a phone in a different location. However, we cannot deny that, to some degree, camping is a way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and a compromise to the risks of trans-provincial tourism during the pandemic. The essence of camping still lies in the enthusiasm we hold for life because, in camping, there are friend interactions, parent-child companionships, and various unexpected situations. We still crave a sense of romance even during the pandemic. We want to be surrounded by nature, tasty food, and more importantly, people we love. Hence, it is worthwhile for us to put down our mobile phones and immerse ourselves in the romance of camping. Agency News ANI| Oct 09, 2022 12:58 PM IST New Delhi [India], October 9 (ANI): Commodity experts say the sharp rise in crude prices, which rose about 12 per cent in the past week, is mainly responsible for the rally in gold rates. But there are other factors at play as well. Rising global inflation and the volatile stock market have made the yellow metal a “safe” investment bet among investors. The spot prices of gold are headed upwards of $1,780 (approx. Rs 1.47 lakh) per ounce whereas MCX gold rate per 10gm could reach Rs 53,000 by Diwali, the experts say, adding that some profit-booking could also take place. The depreciation of the rupee against the US dollar to a record low of 82.40 is, however, a critical variable that underpins domestic gold prices. On Sunday morning, however, gold rates remained flat in Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. Delhi’s rate for 10 gm of 22-carat gold was Rs 48,010, and it was trading at Rs52,370/10 gm for 24-carat gold. The rate of the precious metal in Kolkata per 10 gm of 22 carat stands at Rs47,850 and the rate of 10 gm of 24-carat gold is at Rs 52,200. The gold rate in Mumbai per 10 gm of 22-carat has been at Rs 47,850 and Rs 52,200 per 10 gm of 24-carat gold. The yellow metal faced resistance around the key $1,740 (Rs 1,44,128) per ounce mark in global markets last week, while at the domestic market Rs 52,100 per 10 gm mark acted as a stiff hurdle for prices. Race Control has announced that cars will be sent back out on track at 4:15 p.m. local time, approximately ten minutes from now. 1 hour since restart suspension: The safety car is out… We’re still yet to know if there will be any more racing today. 45 mins since restart suspension: With the race timer ticking down, there isn’t enough time remaining to run at least 75% of the race distance. That means Max Verstappen will need to wait another two weeks before he can be crowned world champion. 30 mins since restart suspension: Still no sign of cars returning to the track, but the crowd at Suzuka is still full. Fingers crossed we’ll be able to get underway again safely. — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 15 mins since restart suspension: There has been plenty of discussion about a controversy involving a recovery tractor that was on track following Carlos Sainz’s crash. The tractor was brought out before all drivers had passed it. Pierre Gasly was visibly angry once he returned to the garage after he had to avoid the tractor in low visibility conditions. We lost a life in this situation years ago. We risk our lives, especially in conditions like this. We wanna race. But this… Unacceptable. — Lando Norris (@LandoNorris) October 9, 2022 10 mins since restart suspension: Rain is falling pretty heavily now, so a restart might be a little while away. RESTART SUSPENDED: Just as cars were warming up to re-enter the track, race control have opted to suspend the restart. It’s unclear why the decision was made, but it appears that more rain is on the way. 5 mins until restart: Max Verstappen will be in pole position from the restart, with Charles Leclerc and Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez behind him.  20 mins since red flag: The safety car has been out to test the track conditions and race control has now announced that the race will re-start in 15 minutes (2:50 p.m. local time / 1:50 a.m. ET).  A rolling start will be used to get us back underway with more than one lap behind the safety car. 10 mins since red flag: Fernando is keeping us entertained as we wait to find out when racing will resume. LIGHTS OUT: A chaotic opening lap and the safety car is out! It was difficult to see much of the action with the huge amount of spray, but Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc got into an exciting tussle for the lead. Leclerc appeared to have the advantage heading into the first turn but Verstappen managed to keep ahead. — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 In the middle of the pack, Sebastian Vettel collided with Fernando Alonso and sustained some damage. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz aquaplaned later in the lap, causing him to slam into a barrier which ends his race. — Formula 1 (@F1) October 9, 2022 Alex Albon has also had his race ended, with his Williams car appearing to have an engine failure. Other impacted drivers on that lap include Guanyu Zhou (who spun on-track) and Pierre Gasly (who had an advertising board land on his front wing after Sainz’s crash).  5 mins to lights out: The formation lap is underway at a very drizzly and overcast Suzuka Circuit.  Most teams have opted for intermediate tires, and there is a lot of spray as the cars set off. Could be an eventful race… 15 mins to lights out: The drivers are on the grid and it’s now time for the singing of the Japanese national anthem. There is every indication that the race will begin as normal, with no rolling start. 30 mins to lights out: Home crowd favourite Yuki Tsunoda is the only Japanese driver on today’s grid.  He’ll start the race from 13th, whilst his Alpha Tauri teammate Pierre Gasly will begin from pit lane after his rear wing and front wing ballast were changed following qualifying.  40 mins to lights out: Rain continues to fall at the track and according to the local weather forecast, it isn’t set to stop any time soon.  It doesn’t appear too heavy, so here’s hoping we can avoid a delayed start like in Singapore last week.  Intermediates appear to be the tire of choice as the cars head out on track.  50 mins to lights out: Sebastian Vettel will race for the last time at Suzuka as an F1 driver today.  Exactly 11 years ago he secured the second of his four world championships on this very track. New Industry PAC To Back Pro-Crypto Candidates – Washington Examiner https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/new-industry-pac-to-back-pro-crypto-candidates-washington-examiner/ October 09, 2022 03:00 AM A cryptocurrency industry group has formed a new political action committee at the end of the 2022 midterm election cycle with the hope of helping to form the next Congress’s view on the new industry. The Blockchain Association, a group that represents more than 100 organizations in the industry, formed its PAC in September 2022 with the hope of influencing and, in future election cycles, funding candidates interested in the cryptocurrency industry. REPUBLICAN ALLAN FUNG LEADS DEMOCRAT IN DEEP-BLUE RHODE ISLAND DISTRICT: POLL “If you are interested in having a conversation about crypto, we want to talk to you,” Executive Director Kristin Smith told the Washington Examiner. Smith worked as an aide on Capitol Hill for 10 years, with a focus on technology policy. She founded the association by herself in 2018 and has quickly expanded it to represent an assortment of entities within the industry, including Circle, Ledger, Ripple, and several others. The Blockchain Association PAC’s formation just last month means it won’t have any significant financial impact on the 2022 midterm elections, but it follows a massive surge in crypto lobbying and election funding. Super PACs with ties to the cryptocurrency industry have invested tens of millions into the 2022 races. Crypto-adjacent PACs invested more than $31 million into the 2022 primaries as of July, according to Federal Election Commission disclosures reviewed by Roll Call. At least two PACs are founded by Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the crypto exchange FTX. Crypto lobbying has also been on the rise. The industry spent at least $6.8 million lobbying Congress in the second quarter of 2022, according to Roll Call. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER The 2022 surge in crypto-funded lobbying and PACs was inspired by several debates in 2021 around President Joe Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill and crypto-related provisions, according to Smith. Biden had proposed new crypto reporting requirements that would cause a large change for anyone involved in digital wallet development or crypto miners. “What we saw last year with the infrastructure fight last summer is that people … woke up to the fact that, ‘Oh, wow, there’s people are talking about crypto on the floor of the United States Senate. I need to figure out how to be a part of that process,'” Smith said. When asked what races they were keeping an eye on, Smith mentioned the Senate campaigns of Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) and Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) — both, she said, have supported “good regulatory solutions for crypto.”

Thousands March In US Women’s Rallies For Abortion Rights – Al Jazeera English https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/thousands-march-in-us-womens-rallies-for-abortion-rights-al-jazeera-english/ Published On 9 Oct 20229 Oct 2022 Thousands of people have marched across cities in the United States, demanding abortion rights ahead of next month’s key midterm elections. In Washington, DC, a crowd chanted: “We won’t go back,” as they marched. They carried posters calling for a “feminist tsunami” and urging people to “vote to save women’s rights”. “I don’t want to have to go back to a different time,” said Emily Bobal, an 18-year-old student. “It’s kind of ridiculous that we still have to do this in 2022,” she said, adding that she is concerned that the conservative-dominated high court might next target same-sex marriage. “The majority of us are ready to get out and fight for democracy and fight for people’s bodily autonomy, women and men,” said Kimberly Allen, 70. With Democrats battling to maintain their narrow control of Congress, the midterm elections could have a decisive impact on the future of such rights, she said. Several marchers wore green armbands or scarves, a colour symbolising abortion rights. Others wore blue, the colour of the Democratic Party, and carried huge flags and banners calling for a symbolic “blue wave” of voters to go to the polls on November 8. A few counterprotesters made their presence known, some of them urging the crowd to “find Jesus Christ”, while others shouted that “abortion is murder”. Similar rallies took place in cities including New York and Denver, Colorado. “The #WomensWave is coming for EVERY anti-abortion politician, no matter where they live,” Rachel O’Leary Carmona, executive director of the nonprofit Women’s March organisation, said on Twitter. She urged people to elect more women as well as male candidates who support abortion rights. Polls show Democrats only have a slim possibility of maintaining control of the House of Representatives, but their chances are better in the evenly-divided Senate, where Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is the tie-breaking vote. While Republicans have been campaigning largely on soaring prices, immigration concerns and urban crime, Democrats led by President Joe Biden want to shift the debate to abortion rights and the defence of American democracy. The Supreme Court in June ended the decades-long federal protection of abortion rights, leaving it to individual states to set their own rules. Since then, several Republican-led states have banned or severely curtailed access to the procedure, provoking a series of legal challenges. In the latest development, an appeals court in the southwestern state of Arizona on Friday blocked, at least for now, a near-total ban on abortions.

The metaverse market size reached a value of $22.79 billion in 2021, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. Companies across the globe, including those in non-tech sectors, are now increasingly investing in technology for better engagement with customers, brand awareness expansion, and identification of new revenue streams. “As of 2021, the media and entertainment market captured a sizable revenue share of the metaverse market. The entertainment experience we have seen through the metaverse has been through music and concerts,” said Deepak Agarwal, Project Manager at GlobalData. “In the non-blockchain world, Travis Scott in Fortnite had put on an enormous concert which showed $20 billion, including merchandise, versus the 1.7 billion from the regular show,” Agrawal added. Various players in the technology sector, including those manufacturing semiconductors, components, and application software, are also leveraging metaverse. Asia-Pacific and North America together held 50 per cent metaverse market share in 2021. “The strong presence of big technology giants in the advanced economies of North America and the emerging economies in the Asia-Pacific region are fuelling the metaverse market growth,” said the report. Companies in these regions are focusing on Blockchain, machine learning, AR and VR, adtech, payment platforms, enterprise applications, gaming, data governance and others. “The metaverse is still largely conceptual but could transform how people work, shop, communicate, and consume content. Although it is in the early stages of development, it has the potential to be the next mega-theme in digital media,” said Agarwal. Furthermore, the large-scale adoption of next-gen technologies. including AR and VR will accentuate the adoption of metaverse by most of the stakeholders involved, the report mentioned. Tax Burden Shifts From Homeowners To Others In McLennan County With New Exemptions Waco Tribune-Herald
Tax Burden Shifts From Homeowners To Others In McLennan County With New Exemptions Waco Tribune-Herald
Tax Burden Shifts From Homeowners To Others In McLennan County With New Exemptions – Waco Tribune-Herald https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/tax-burden-shifts-from-homeowners-to-others-in-mclennan-county-with-new-exemptions-waco-tribune-herald/ New state and local property tax exemptions worked as intended in McLennan County, dropping total taxes levied on owners with homestead exemptions by almost 3% compared to last year, according to data compiled by the local appraisal district. But that spells higher bills for the 41% of county residents who rent and for commercial property owners. Total taxes levied on McLennan County residences without a homestead exemption, mostly rental properties, increased by 23% year over year. The levy on commercial properties increased by 7%. A greater share of this year’s tax levy imposed by all entities in McLennan County comes from rental properties, a contributing factor to increasing rent costs. The majority of taxing entities in the county lowered their tax rates or maintained last year’s rate in the face of countywide taxable property values that increased by $3.2 billion, or about 15%, compared to last year. “Overall for the county, tax rates are going down over time, which it should as values go up,” said Joe Don Bobbitt, chief appraiser for the McLennan County Appraisal District. The shift of tax burden away from homeowners and onto other property owners came with expanded homestead exemptions. Voters statewide approved a measure in May to expand the school tax homestead exemption, available for properties that serve as the owner’s primary residence, from a $25,000 reduction of taxed value to a $40,000 reduction. The Waco City Council followed up in June by increasing Waco’s general homestead exemption from 10% to 15%, increasing the city’s exemption for homeowners 65 or older from $5,000 to $50,000, and adding a new $50,000 exemption for homeowners with disabilities. Woodway, which does not have a general homestead exemption, expanded its exemption for homeowners 65 and older from $10,000 to $20,000 and added a $20,000 exemption for homeowners with disabilities. “Anything that is not a (property with a homestead exemption) probably went up,” Bobbitt said. According to Bobbitt, who used weighted averages to prevent new properties or exemption status changes from skewing the data, taxes all entities in McLennan County levied on residences without homestead exemptions increased by 9% from 2020 to 2021, then 23% from 2021 to 2022; while taxes levied on houses with an exemption increased by 3% from 2020 to 2021, then decreased by 3% from 2021 to 2022; and taxes levied on commercial properties dipped by 7% from 2020 to 2021, then increased by 7% from 2021 to 2022. While homeowners overall are seeing a dip in property taxes this year, individual cases vary significantly. And often eye-popping value increases led to a jump in owners filing formal protests of property values set by the appraisal district. The number of protests this year hit 19,000, compared to 15,000 last year, Bobbitt has said. John Eagle said the Brookview home he purchased in 2020 has seen its tax value increase by more than 10% annually since 2015. Rod Aydelotte, Tribune-Herald John Eagle said the Brookview home he purchased in 2020 has seen its tax value increase by more than 10% annually since 2015. Rod Aydelotte, Tribune-Herald The vast majority of property value protests have been settled by this point in the year. One of the few homeowners still fighting their valuations is local doctor John Eagle, who said he hired a startup to argue on his behalf this time around after he was unsuccessful last year. He bought his home in the Brookview neighborhood in May 2020, taking advantage of low interest rates available at the time. Eagle said the home was a steal at about $160,000, but since then his appraisal has increased by about $50,000. He and his wife have invested in the pale yellow house, remodeling parts of the kitchen and maintaining the home’s original hardwood floors before turning their attention to the exterior and landscaping. Under state law, the tax value of a property with a homestead exemption can increase by no more than 10% per year, but the cap does not apply to the value of new improvements made to the property. “I think the hardest part about it is that it punishes improvement,” Eagle said. “We’ve put some work into this house, and we’d love to be here a long time. … At the same time, if that increases the appraisal, it punishes us in the long run.” He said the home’s appraisal has increased about 10.6% per year since 2015, compared to a 3.6% increase in Waco’s median wage over the same period of time. “Unless you’re constantly getting promoted or getting raises, how do you keep up with the appraisal value of your own home?” Eagle said. The first time he attempted to argue for a lower valuation, he took the wrong approach, focusing on his issues with how Waco ISD and other taxing entities were using property taxes. This time he said he hired Ownwell, a Texas startup that will argue his case in exchange for half of any money the firm is able to save him. Retired primary school teacher Pam Cooper plays the organ in her China Spring-area home, which saw its tax value jump to $143,760, up from $116,360 a year ago. Jerry Larson, Tribune-Herald For retired school teacher Pam Cooper, this year’s property appraisal notice for her home near China Spring made her gulp. The valuation jumped to $143,760, up from $116,360 the year before. “I’m one of those who think school teachers shouldn’t have to pay school taxes when they retire,” she said. Cooper, 71, retired in 2020 after 37 years as a primary school teacher, including 22 years with the Waco Independent School District. She pays property taxes to McLennan County, the city of Waco, McLennan Community College and China Spring ISD, qualifying for homestead and senior citizen exemptions in the taxing jurisdictions that offer them. Cooper estimates she draws about $3,100 monthly in retirement benefits, but any future increases in those benefits would come from the Texas Legislature. The $715 she paid in property taxes last year had increased from $650 the year before, which makes her wonder what this year’s tax bill will look like with the higher valuations. Cooper works part-time as president of the Greater Waco American Federation of Texas, but largely relies on her retirement benefits through the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. Nearly three years ago, Waco artist Susan Sistrunk and then-partner Mark Kieran moved into the 112-year-old house that doubles as her home and the location of her Susan L. Sistrunk Fine Art Gallery. Susan Sistrunk works in the studio at the Washington Avenue property she leases for use as her gallery and her home. Her tax situation, without the benefit of a homestead exemption, has been further complicated this year by the addition of furnishings to the property taxed as part of her business. Jerry Larson, Tribune-Herald Its location in the 2100 block of Washington Avenue was a major draw, close to downtown Waco and access to potential customers, local artists and business collaborators, but more affordable than property closer to the city’s center. She leases the property through The Cromwell Co. property management firm for $1,750 per month. Last year, the property valuation for the 1,940-square-foot home went up from $176,410 to $211,570, with taxes assessed at $4,563.20. Her lease went up $100 per month this year, and she is anxious about what rising property values will mean for a gallery owner and artist operating on a thin profit margin. “When you’re dealing with a home-based business, you want to keep costs low and out of debt. … I’m a debt-free business and I plan to stay that way,” she said. County tax records show a Barry J. Williams of Austin as the house’s owner. Efforts to contact him for comment were unsuccessful. Retired primary school teacher Pam Cooper plays the organ in her China Spring-area home, which saw its tax value jump to $143,760, up from $116,360 a year ago. Jerry Larson, Tribune-Herald In addition to paying property taxes through her lease, Sistrunk pays sales taxes from her business on a quarterly basis. She said it peeved her to receive notice from the county tax assessor’s office this year that some of her home furnishings, such as antique chairs and a couch she inherited from her family, are considered part of her business and taxed accordingly. “The amount is not vast … but my concern is the taxes keep edging up,” Sistrunk said. “I pride myself serving local artists in the community. If this edges my prices up, people will not pay the prices (they see) in Dallas and Austin. When does this nickel-and-diming stop?” According to data from Apartmentlist.com, average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in McLennan County increased from $915 to $1,181 from 2020 to 2022. Robert Denton, a local landlord who owns both commercial and residential properties, said there are factors beyond rising property taxes that will increase rental rates in the future. He said the number of properties the appraisal district oversees has almost quadrupled in the last several years, but the staff has remained more or less the same size, and he does not fault the appraisal district. He said inflation, maintenance costs and rising interests rates are factors that influence rent along with property taxes. Insurance costs also rise as a function of property values. “We’re ready to get more into a recession and the numbers … of people being evicted, people not being able to pay their rent, all those numbers are going to increase,” Denton said. He also said real estate investment companies that buy up as much rental property as possible are more active in McLennan County than they have been in previous years. “Those are investors that you don’t know and you don’t see,...

6 Real-Life Places You Can Visit Inspired By Your Favorite Fall Movies And TV Shows – The Everygirl https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/6-real-life-places-you-can-visit-inspired-by-your-favorite-fall-movies-and-tv-shows-the-everygirl/ Summer travel is all about sandy beaches and palm trees, and while we love a warm-weather vacay, travel doesn’t have to stop once the weather cools down. Fall getaways are an excellent way to use that leftover vacation time from summer. And if you need some inspiration for places to visit, might we suggest turning to your favorite fall movies and TV shows? After all, watching dreamy scenes of fall foliage and your favorite characters in their chunky sweaters and boots is enough to make anyone want to jump through the screen. So many fall movie and TV favorites take place in locations that perfectly capture the crisp feeling of autumn. Whether fall makes you long for a stroll through a picturesque small town or you’d rather run amok (amok, amok, amok!) through spooky historic streets, you can experience the magic of these places yourself. Here are six real-life places to visit this fall based on our favorite seasonal movies and TV shows. Salem, Massachusetts – Hocus Pocus There’s nothing more iconic than Salem, Massachusetts, in October. The New England town is, of course, home to the real-life witch trials of 1692 and served as the setting of the 1993 Halloween classic Hocus Pocus. For anyone who obsessed over the Sanderson sisters’ campy outfits or longed to live in Max and Dani’s quirky house, Salem is a must-visit. You can tour several of the filming locations in present-day Salem. Visit Pioneer Village, a living history museum where the opening scenes were shot. Check out the Ropes Mansion, AKA Alison’s house. And don’t miss a peek inside Old Town Hall, made famous by Bette Midler’s rendition of “I Put A Spell On You” during the never-ending Halloween dance party. There’s now even an Airbnb modeled after the Sanderson sisters’ cottage! St. Helens, Oregon – Halloweentown If you’re a fan of the 1998 movie Halloweentown, don’t sleep on St. Helens, Oregon. The small town served as the primary filming location for the Disney Channel classic. Every year since, its riverfront district has transformed into the Spirit of Halloweentown for the month of October. The event is open to visitors 24 hours a day, just like any city. It includes attractions like a haunted house, a Halloween parade, and a giant pumpkin that stays lit for the entire month. There is so much to see and do. You’ll wish you had your very own Benny to taxi you around! Forks, Washington – Twilight Forks, Washington, is the real-life town that author Stephenie Meyer used as the setting of Twilight. Fans will find plenty to see and do in this rainy Pacific Northwest destination. Visit the Forever Twilight in Forks Collection, which houses many props and costumes from the film, including Bella’s graduation quilt and outfits that Bella, Edward, and Jacob wore on-screen. Then take a scenic drive around the town to see locations like the Swan residence and the Cullen house, all while taking in the beautiful landscape. In addition to all the Twilight sights, there are ample outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, and camping. So be sure to pack your hiking boots, and don’t forget a raincoat! New York, New York – You’ve Got Mail New York has served as the setting for tons of iconic movies, but when it comes to feel-good fall romantic comedies set in NYC, You’ve Got Mail takes the cake. Nora Ephron set this classic tale in the Upper West Side. Even though a lot has changed since the film’s 1998 release, there are still a few spots that have stood the test of time. Be sure to grab a coffee at Cafe Lalo, the spot where Kathleen Kelly sits and waits (and waits and waits … ugh, my heart!) for NY152 to show up. Then, take a walk through Riverside Park, where Kathleen learns that her online friend and crush has been her nemesis, Joe Fox, all along. And although the interior of The Shop Around the Corner was shot in a studio, see if you can spot the storefront (now a dry cleaner) along West 69th Street where the exterior shots were filmed! Washington, Connecticut – Gilmore Girls The quirky Connecticut town that Lorelai and Rory Gilmore called home in the show Gilmore Girls is, unfortunately, completely fictional. But real-life Connecticut is oozing with New England charm à la Stars Hollow. In fact, the town of Washington is said to be the spot that inspired the show itself. Splurge and stay at the Mayflower Inn and Spa, the gorgeous locale that reportedly inspired Star Hollow’s Independence Inn. In the morning, take a five-minute drive to Marty’s Cafe for coffee, breakfast, and all the Luke’s Diner vibes. Then check out more places that inspired locations in the show, like the Washington Food Market and the Hickory Stick Bookshop. It’s the perfect fall weekend if you want to slow down and soak up all the small-town loveliness that Stars Hollow—I mean Washington, Connecticut—has to offer! Coupeville, Washington – Practical Magic About a two-hour drive and a ferry ride away from Seattle, you’ll find the picturesque town of Coupeville on Whidbey Island. This is where Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and Stockard Channing filmed the cult classic Practical Magic. Whether you’ve always wanted to know what it would feel like to be an Owens sister witch, or you simply have a thing for charming seaside towns, Coupeville delivers. In between beach walks and small-town boutique shopping, be sure to pick up pastries at Little Red Hen Bakery. This served as the filming location for Sally’s shop, Verbena Botanicals. Then, have dinner at Toby’s Tavern, which fans will recognize as The Catch and Fry. Practical Magic is not only a celebration of love and all things mystical, but the film also champions supportive and powerful women, making it the perfect inspiration for a fall girls’ trip.
