Here’s Why This Expert Thinks The Next Crypto Bearish Trend May Be Near – NewsBTC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/heres-why-this-expert-thinks-the-next-crypto-bearish-trend-may-be-near-newsbtc/ The past few months have brought a rollercoaster experience for the prices of cryptocurrencies. The crypto market has been hovering due to the impact of macro factors. But the past 24 hours created a new move of strength in the market. Almost all the assets made positive moves to push the market into the green. The price of Bitcoin has gradually climbed to its critical level of $20K as the token amassed over a 2.5% uptrend. In the early trading hours of today, the BTC price reached $20,342. Bitcoin price trends above the $20,000 mark l BTCUSDT on Tradingview.com The bullish trend cuts across the altcoins and other crypto assets. Ethereum has crossed the $1,350 level as it rose by over 1.8% over the past day. Dogecoin (DOGE) made a tremendous reclaiming with a surge of over 8% over the past 24 hours. This mark an outstanding bullish strength in the digital asset market for today. Also, Ripple (XRP) redirected its pattern through an increase of about 5% in the last 24 hours. Experts Think Digital Assets Market Can’t Sustain A Price Rally Experts predict another bottom for the crypto market despite its recent impressive price movements. They think the crypto assets lack sustainability for the price rally and will soon experience a bearish trend. The CEO of Eight Global and crypto analyst, Michael van de Poppe, commented on a possible turn of the crypto market. He thinks that the value of the US dollar will soon rally. According to him, such a new development will impact the crypto market through a slight correction. Additionally, the data for US unemployment is set to be announced on Friday. In his thinking, Michael Poppe stated that the data could be wrong and negatively affect the crypto market. In recent years, macroeconomic conditions have negatively affected the crypto market. As a result, such conditions now dictate the price trend in the market. This follows the strong correlation between crypto and traditional general markets. Crypto Market Still In Struggle Despite its recent bullish trend, there are still signs of struggles in the crypto market. The US Federal Reserve took a hawkish stance in its controlling measures against inflation. With its approach of increasing interest rates and tightening other financial operations, many people are in fear. Following hikes in rates by global economies, the United Nations has requested that they avert the use of an aggressive approach. Instead, the UN highlighted a possible global recession with the stance of most central banks. But the American central bank will not tune down its force. Oil prices are adding to the tension in the raging macroeconomic environment. As a result, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has planned to reduce supplies to hike oil prices, the worst reduction since 2020. The OPEC is expected to hold its meeting on Wednesday for its final decision. Featured image from Pixabay and chart from TradingView.com

100 Days Post-Roe: At Least 66 Clinics Across 15 US States Have Stopped Offering Abortion Care – Guttmacher Institute https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/100-days-post-roe-at-least-66-clinics-across-15-us-states-have-stopped-offering-abortion-care-guttmacher-institute/ October 2, 2022 marked 100 days since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a decision that has resulted in states across the nation severely restricting access to abortion. New Guttmacher research found that 100 days after the June 24 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, 66 clinics across 15 states have been forced to stop offering abortions. Prior to June 24, these 15 states had a total of 79 clinics that provided abortion care. As of October 2, that number had dropped to 13, and all of them are located in Georgia. This means there are no providers currently offering abortions in 14 of the 15 states. Among the 66 clinics where abortion is no longer available, 40 are still offering services other than abortion, while 26 have shut down entirely. Our analysis, which builds on research we conducted 30 days after Roe fell, focuses on the 15 states that were enforcing either total or six-week abortion bans as of October 2. While most of these bans include very limited circumstances when an abortion may be allowed, those exceptions are designed to be difficult to navigate and are often unusable in practice. States Where Clinics Stopped Offering Abortions or Closed Entirely In the 13 states that had implemented total abortion bans as of October 2, all clinics were forced to stop offering abortions. In the other two states, Wisconsin and Georgia, the situation is precarious. Clinics in Wisconsin have faced legal uncertainty around the state’s pre-Roe total abortion ban, leading providers in that state to stop offering abortions out of fear of future prosecution. In Georgia, which is enforcing a ban on abortion starting at six weeks of pregnancy, clinics have been affected by the shortened timeframe to offer abortion services. At the 40 clinics that have remained open for services other than abortion, our research did not ask about the scope of activities they are undertaking, but it may include providing other sexual and reproductive health services (e.g., prescribing birth control) or helping patients find abortion care in other states. However, 26 clinics have been forced to close their doors. When clinics close down or stop offering abortion care, it represents a lost source of health care for their community. Changes to Abortion Clinic Services Our research tracked the following changes to abortion services at clinics in 15 states as of October 2, 2022, compared with the situation right before Roe was overturned. Alabama (previously 5 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 4 open for other services Arizona (previously 8 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 7 open for other services Arkansas (previously 2 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 1 open for other services Georgia (previously 14 clinics) 13 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely Idaho (previously 3 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 2 open for other services Kentucky (previously 2 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 1 open for other services Louisiana (previously 3 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 3 clinics closed entirely, 0 open for other services Mississippi (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 0 open for other services Missouri (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 1 open for other services Oklahoma (previously 4 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 2 clinics closed entirely, 2 open for other services South Dakota (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 1 open for other services Tennessee (previously 7 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 2 clinics closed entirely, 5 open for other services Texas (previously 23 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 12 clinics closed entirely, 11 open for other services West Virginia (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 1 open for other services Wisconsin (previously 4 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 4 open for other services Impact on People Needing Abortions The new reality of clinics no longer offering abortions or closing down entirely is having a devastating impact in states with abortion bans—and far beyond. The 14 states where abortion is currently unavailable accounted for 125,780 abortions in 2020. Individuals who can no longer obtain an abortion from a clinic in these states are now forced to travel to another state for abortion care (facing additional direct and indirect costs associated with travel logistics, child care and time off work), self-manage their abortion or continue their pregnancy (and accept the significant associated health risks). Likewise, 41,620 abortions were obtained in Georgia in 2020. Under the state’s six-week abortion ban, which prohibits abortion before many people even know they are pregnant, anyone needing an abortion faces an extremely limited time frame for scheduling and obtaining care. This means many people in Georgia will be left with the same options as people in states with total bans. Altogether, these 15 states are home to almost 22 million women of reproductive age (aged 15–49), in addition to other people who may not identify as women but are capable of becoming pregnant and may need an abortion. That means almost one-third (29%) of the total US population of women of reproductive age are living in states where abortion is either unavailable or severely restricted. Importantly, the loss of clinics is felt in all states—even those where abortion remains legal. Ample anecdotal evidence shows that abortion clinics in these states are being inundated with people from states with abortion bans seeking care. These dramatic increases in caseloads mean clinic capacity and staff are stretched to their limits, resulting in longer wait times for appointments even for residents of states where abortion remains legal. More Chaos, Confusion and Harm to Come Even before Roe was overturned, getting an abortion was difficult or outright impossible for many people, especially those who were already facing steep barriers to accessing health care, including people with low incomes, Black and Brown people, immigrants, young people, those with disabilities and rural populations. These inequities are likely to worsen as clinic-based abortion care disappears in many states, a number of them clustered in regions like the South. An already precarious abortion access landscape is likely to continue to deteriorate. Our state legislative tracking predicts that a total of 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion within a year of Roe being overturned. Already, several states—including Indiana, Ohio and South Carolina—had total or six-week abortion bans go into effect briefly before they were temporarily blocked in court. These bans could go into effect again as soon as the court cases are resolved. These disruptions to service provision—even when temporary—affect the ability of established providers to quickly resume abortion care. Further, rapidly changing laws may make it unclear to some patients whether they can legally seek an abortion in their state.  Much more research will need to be conducted to grasp the full extent of the chaos, confusion and harm that the US Supreme Court has unleashed on people needing abortions, but the picture that is starting to emerge should alarm anyone who supports reproductive freedom and the right to bodily autonomy. Methodology Starting September 20, we generated a list of clinics known to have provided abortion care in 2020 in the 17 states that implemented total or early gestational age abortion bans following the Supreme Court decision in June. We checked our list of 2020 facilities against other sources to remove clinics that had not been providing abortion care as of June 24, 2022. The number of states was adjusted based on changes in state laws and their implementation through October 2, including the removal of Indiana and Ohio after court action temporarily suspended their bans.  Between September 20 and October 2, we used multiple sources—including clinic websites, news stories, social media and information from colleague organizations—to track the status of abortion services. For each clinic, we determined if the facility was open or closed; if open, if it was providing abortions or other sexual and reproductive health care; and, if providing abortions, whether abortion care was available past six weeks’ gestation. In cases where online information was seemingly out of date (e.g., a clinic indicated it provided abortion care even though there was a state ban in effect), we conducted one or more mystery calls using the phone number listed on the clinic’s website. If a phone line was not answered after two or more calls during business hours, we considered the clinic to be closed. Data were imported into Stata17 to systematically count the number of clinics that had closed or had stopped providing abortions and were continuing to offer other services. We analyzed American Community Survey data from 2020 in Stata17 to calculate the number and percentage of women of reproductive age living in the 15 states we investigated. The authors thank Ava Braccia, Christina Geddes and Tammy Lever for collecting the data used in this analysis. Simulating Neutron Behavior In Nuclear Reactors | MIT News | Massachusetts Institute Of Technology – MIT News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/simulating-neutron-behavior-in-nuclear-reactors-mit-news-massachusetts-institute-of-technology-mit-news/ Amelia Trainer applied to MIT because she lost a bet. As part of what the fourth-year nuclear science and engineering (NSE) doctoral student labels her “teenage rebellious phase,” Trainer was quite convinced she would just be wasting the application fee were she to submit an application. She wasn’t even “super sure” she wanted to go to college. But a high-school friend was convinced Trainer would get into a “top school” if she only applied. A bet followed: If Trainer lost, she would have to apply to MIT. Trainer lost — and is glad she did. Growing up in Daytona Beach, Florida, good grades were Trainer’s thing. Seeing friends participate in interschool math competitions, Trainer decided she would tag along and soon found she loved them. She remembers being adept at reading the room: If teams were especially struggling over a problem, Trainer figured the answer had to be something easy, like zero or one. “The hardest problems would usually have the most goofball answers,” she laughs. Simulating neutron behavior As a doctoral student, hard problems in math, specifically computational reactor physics, continue to be Trainer’s forte. Her research, under the guidance of Professor Benoit Forget in MIT NSE’s Computational Reactor Physics Group (CRPG), focuses on modeling complicated neutron behavior in reactors. Simulation helps forecast the behavior of reactors before millions of dollars sink into development of a potentially uneconomical unit. Using simulations, Trainer can see “where the neutrons are going, how much heat is being produced, and how much power the reactor can generate.” Her research helps form the foundation for the next generation of nuclear power plants. To simulate neutron behavior inside of a nuclear reactor, you first need to know how neutrons will interact with the various materials inside the system. These neutrons can have wildly different energies, thereby making them susceptible to different physical phenomena. For the entirety of her graduate studies, Trainer has been primarily interested in the physics regarding slow-moving neutrons and their scattering behavior. When a slow neutron scatters off of a material, it can induce or cancel out molecular vibrations between the material’s atoms. The effect that material vibrations can have on neutron energies, and thereby on reactor behavior, has been heavily approximated over the years. Trainer is primarily interested in chipping away at these approximations by creating scattering data for materials that have historically been misrepresented and by exploring new techniques for preparing slow-neutron scattering data. Trainer remembers waiting for a simulation to complete in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, when she discovered a way to predict neutron behavior with limited input data. Traditionally, “people have to store large tables of what neutrons will do under specific circumstances,” she says. “I’m really happy about it because it’s this really cool method of sampling what your neutron does from very little information,” Trainer says. Amelia Trainer — Modeling complicated neutron behavior in nuclear reactors As part of her research, Trainer often works closely with two software packages: OpenMC and NJOY. OpenMC is a Monte Carlo neutron transport simulation code that was developed in the CRPG and is used to simulate neutron behavior in reactor systems. NJOY is a nuclear data processing tool, and is used to create, augment, and prepare material data that is fed into tools like OpenMC. By editing both these codes to her specifications, Trainer is able to observe the effect that “upstream” material data has on the “downstream” reactor calculations. Through this, she hopes to identify additional problems: approximations that could lead to a noticeable misrepresentation of the physics. A love of geometry and poetry Trainer discovered the coolness of science as a child. Her mother, who cares for indoor plants and runs multiple greenhouses, and her father, a blacksmith and farrier, who explored materials science through his craft, were self-taught inspirations. Trainer’s father urged his daughter to learn and pursue any topics that she found exciting and encouraged her to read poems from “Calvin and Hobbes” out loud when she struggled with a speech impediment in early childhood. Reading the same passages every day helped her memorize them. “The natural manifestation of that extended into [a love of] poetry,” Trainer says. A love of poetry, combined with Trainer’s propensity for fun, led her to compose an ode to pi as part of an MIT-sponsored event for alumni. “I was really only in it for the cupcake,” she laughs. (Participants received an indulgent treat). MIT Matters: A Love Poem to Pi Computations and nuclear science After being accepted at MIT, Trainer knew she wanted to study in a field that would take her skills at the levels they were at — “my math skills were pretty underdeveloped in the grand scheme of things,” she says. An open-house weekend at MIT, where she met with faculty from the NSE department, and the opportunity to contribute to a discipline working toward clean energy, cemented Trainer’s decision to join NSE. As a high schooler, Trainer won a scholarship to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to learn computer coding and knew computational physics might be more aligned with her interests. After she joined MIT as an undergraduate student in 2014, she realized that the CRPG, with its focus on coding and modeling, might be a good fit. Fortunately, a graduate student from Forget’s team welcomed Trainer’s enthusiasm for research even as an undergraduate first-year. She has stayed with the lab ever since.  Research internships at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the creators of NJOY, have furthered Trainer’s enthusiasm for modeling and computational physics. She met a Los Alamos scientist after he presented a talk at MIT and it snowballed into a collaboration where she could work on parts of the NJOY code. “It became a really cool collaboration which led me into a deep dive into physics and data preparation techniques, which was just so fulfilling,” Trainer says. As for what’s next, Trainer was awarded the Rickover fellowship in nuclear engineering by the the Department of Energy’s Naval Reactors Division and will join the program in Pittsburgh after she graduates. For many years, Trainer’s cats, Jacques and Monster, have been a constant companion. “Neutrons, computers, and cats, that’s my personality,” she laughs. Work continues to fuel her passion. To borrow a favorite phrase from Spaceman Spiff, Trainer’s favorite “Calvin” avatar, Trainer’s approach to research has invariably been: “Another day, another mind-boggling adventure.”

Travel: To Find Relaxation, Visit The San Juan Islands In Washington State – Knoxville News Sentinel https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/travel-to-find-relaxation-visit-the-san-juan-islands-in-washington-state-knoxville-news-sentinel/ Linda Lange and Steve Ahillen  |  Special to Knoxville News Sentinel FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. — Suddenly, the orcas are everywhere. Their telltale fins pop up all about us—a pod of at least dozen. Our whale-watching boat, the Sea Lion, is one of a handful nearing them at a safe distance in the waters of the San Juan Islands nearly into Canada. “August and September are when we see them the most,” explains Haleigh Yang, a naturalist guide with San Juan Safaris. “The orcas like it here.” So do the visitors who board ferries at Anacortes to arrive in the San Juan Islands. They come to see the magnificent whales. They also enjoy the art galleries, wine cellars, theaters, spas, and many other attractions of this versatile destination. The islands receive more than a million visitors annually. Located northwest of Seattle, the San Juan Islands are a loose archipelago of more than 170 islands in the Salish Sea, loose because some islands are so small that they appear and disappear with the tide. They are the remains of a mountain range that connected Washington to Canada’s Vancouver Island. The temperature stays pleasantly cool most of the year, a primary reason—along with whale watching—the San Juan Islands are a popular destination for international travelers. Scenic beauty, fun and relaxation are as abundant as the many sea lions that sunbathe on the islands’ rocky shores. Ferry to Friday Harbor The big, white ferries, some holding as many as 140 cars, navigate from Anacortes and arrive at Friday Harbor, the largest town in this cluster of islands. People watch arrivals and departures from benches near the docks and the patios of restaurants, like the Downriggers. Sailing yachts dock alongside excursion boats and other watercraft.  From the harbor area, gift boutiques, clothing stores and coffee shops fan across a hill that rises from the waterfront. Casual dining eateries, such as Cynthia’s and the Market Chef Deli, use island-grown vegetables and meats. San Juan Island Brewing Company serves locally made ales and lagers, along with pizzas, and is packed to the rafters on trivia night. The restaurant at Friday Harbor House treats guests to an elegant dinner and a supreme harbor view. Wall murals and sculptures sprinkled throughout town display the town’s embrace of a vibrant cultural lifestyle. Theaters and performing arts venues flank bookstores and art galleries. The San Juan Islands are deemed an “arts hot spot” by the Washington State Arts Commission because of the high number of galleries, working artists and art dealers. The San Juan Islands Museum of Art hosts exhibitions of paintings, drawing, sculpture and photography by regional, national and international artists. The Arctic Raven Gallery specializes in Arctic and Northwest Coast Native art, particularly cedar wood carvings, baskets, totem poles and stone carvings. The Whale Museum illuminates interesting facts about the big creatures. Orcas feed in the salmon-rich waters of the surrounding Salish Sea, as do minke whales and humpback whales, porpoise, seals and sea lions. Two types of orcas are seen in the saltwater: resident orcas that live here year-round and orcas that pass through during their migrations. Canadian vacation:The Canadian Rockies offer views you won’t see anywhere else Montana vacation:Drink in the beauty of Glacier National Park at the Many Glacier Hotel Not surprisingly, wildlife and whale-watching tours are highlights in people’s visit to the San Juan Islands. The powerful orcas with shiny, smooth skin and black-and-white markings awe onlookers. Tour operators work together to locate whale pods and provide thrilling experiences. Three pods with about 75 orca whales inhabit the waters of San Juan Islands. Getting around San Juan Island San Juan Island begs exploration. The island is about 14 miles long and 6 miles wide. The San Juan Islands Scenic Byway threads through rolling pastures and forests of cedar and fir. Islanders are dedicated to preserving their beloved open spaces, and they put conservation-focused, land-use planning into place. In this nature-blessed environment, people pursue bicycle riding, hiking, sea kayaking and wildlife watching, and enjoy the pleasures of rural living. The San Juan Vineyard hosts a tasting room in a bucolic setting complete with grape arbors and a picture postcard-perfect white church. Afterglow Rose is the best-selling wine among a substantial list of offerings to be sipped on the garden patio. Tastings are also available at the San Juan Distillery. It offers a wide selection of ciders, brandies and gins. The Palindaba Lavender Farm, a sea of light purple with a scent that mellows the soul, is open to visitors. Visitors can tour the farm’s lavender distillery. A shop sells all things lavender, from soap to chocolate. The 40-acre Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm welcomes guests wishing to learn about its hairy herd and shop for luxury clothing and accessories. Westcott Bay Shell Company, a working farm that grows oysters, clams and mussels, accommodates those who want their meals prepared on the spot. Tables overlook the cultivated tidelands. For travelers looking for lighthouses, they will find a white beacon by following Cattle Point Road to the southern tip of the island. This beach is also a prime view area for bald eagles and many migratory birds. At Lime Kiln Point State Park on the island’s west side, a 38-foot octagonal lighthouse rises from the rocky point overlooking Haro Strait. The loudest sound is the rhythmic hush of waves. People gather on the driftwood-strewn beaches to watch for whales. Also, they hike the trails laced through the 36-acre state park, including one that leads to the long-abandoned lime kiln. The Only Casualty Was a Pig The San Juan National Historical Park has ties to an unusual incident. British and American troops almost fought a war because a farmer killed a pig for invading his garden. The Pig War, actually a dispute about who owned the San Juan Islands, lasted from 1859 to 1871 and eventually determined the American sovereignty of the San Juan Islands. The American Camp at the island’s south end showcases several wood-framed buildings, an earthen fortress, and magnificent, windswept views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Dark amber prairies blanket the hills leading to South Beach, the longest public beach in the San Juan Islands. In the island’s north region, the British Camp features a blockhouse, restored formal English garden and parade ground. A short hiking trail loops through woods and alongside Garrison Bay. Roche Harbor Resort Near the top of San Juan Island, the village of Roche Harbor is a world unto itself. In the resort community, pastel-colored houses rests on a small hill. The historic Hotel De Haro, three restaurants, shops and spa surround the main pier. Madrona Bar and Grill is an ideal place to watch the activities of the harbor: kayakers preparing for saltwater adventures and yachtsmen readying for departure. Kayakers appreciate the quiet bays where they often glimpse otters and harbor seals. Sailors consider the San Juan Islands to be among the world’s best cruising waters. The resort adjoins the 20-acre San Juan Islands Sculpture Park, a meadow and woodland with more than 125 artworks by Northwest artists. More Islands Just a Ferry Ride Away San Juan Island is the most-visited island in the archipelago; however, two other islands claim a good share of visitors. Those islands are lightly settled and blessed with natural beauty, comfortable accommodations and cultural attractions.  Horseshoe-shaped Orcas Island is the largest. The 5,424-acre Moran State Park is a hiker’s heaven with 30 miles of trails. A stone observation tower sits atop Mount Constitution allowing for views of Mount Baker, Mount Rainier and the Canadian Gulf Islands. The tower is one of 20 buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 1940s. An 8-mile trail network extends across the Turtleback Mountain Preserve, where hikers wander through woodlands, grasslands and wetlands. The beauty of the landscape inspires artists in the hamlet of Olga. Orcas Island Artworks, a cooperative, sells the wares of more than 45 local artists. Bicycle riders love Lopez Island because it has few hills. The 15-mile-long island appeals to hikers and golfers, as well. The Lopez Island Vineyards serves its fine wines at a tasting room in Lopez Village. Nearby are a fine arts gallery, bakery, historical museum, shops, restaurants and lodging. Mountain West Has Better-Than-Average Childhood Obesity Rates, But Officials Still Seek Improvement – Aspen Public Radio https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/mountain-west-has-better-than-average-childhood-obesity-rates-but-officials-still-seek-improvement-aspen-public-radio/ Wyoming Public Radio | By Will Walkey Published October 5, 2022 at 4:56 PM MDT News brief:  The Biden administration announced a plan last week to improve the nation’s nutrition and health. Its goals include promoting exercise, improving food access and affordability and decreasing obesity for both adults and children. Obesity affects more than one in six children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jamie Bussel, senior program officer with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said obesity rates rose during the pandemic because kids often couldn’t get outside during normal school hours. Many families also faced economic constraints that limited nutrition. “With resources being stretched ever thinner these days, many families are forced to prioritize things like paying rent over putting healthy food on the table,” Bussel said. Obesity statistics show the Mountain West fares better than the rest of the country. Utah and Colorado have some of the lowest childhood obesity rates among all states, and every state in the Mountain West is better than average when it comes to adult weight statistics. Bussel said people tend to be more active in the region, and that certain states have prioritized access to healthy meals in their policies. Living at altitude has also been associated with lower obesity rates. Still, Bussel says all states can do more to reduce inequality, increase food assistance and school meal funding, and support physical exercise. Lower-income families and communities of color are disproportionately affected by obesity, according to the CDC. Excess weight increases the risks of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. It can also limit respiratory function and affect memory. “In many ways, you have the pandemic and the epidemic of childhood obesity really reinforcing one another,” Bussel said. “Made worse because unhealthy food is cheap.” Biden’s conference on health and nutrition was the first held by the White House since 1969. His plan aims to end hunger nationwide by 2030. The game stayed deadlocked at 0-0 for well over three quarters until Ithaca scored a goal with 1:38 remaining, handing Vassar a heartbreaking defeat. The Brewers quickly rebounded with a huge win over 20th-ranked SUNY Cortland just a few days later on Oct. 4. Taliban Had A ‘massive Chilling Effect’ On Afghan Crypto Market: Report – Cointelegraph https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/taliban-had-a-massive-chilling-effect-on-afghan-crypto-market-report-cointelegraph/ Crypto value received in Afghanistan surged in the wake of the Taliban seizing power in August 2021, but crypto markets have flat lined under the regime. 382 Total views 47 Total shares The Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan has had a “massive chilling effect” on the local cryptocurrency market, bringing it to an effective “standstill,” according to a recent report. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis in an Oct. 5 report stated the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region saw the largest crypto market growth in 2022 but noted that Afghani crypto dealers had three options: “flee the country, cease operations, or risk arrest.” The report states after the Taliban seized power in August 2021, crypto value received in August and September that year spiked to a peak of over $150 million, then fell sharply the following month.  Before the takeover, Afghani citizens would on average receive $68 million per month in crypto value mainly used for remittances. That figure has now dropped to less than $80,000 post takeover. Graph from Chainalysis 2022 Geography of Cryptocurrency Report. A supply cut of around 1 million barrels per day would have resulted in price gains without a compromise on volumes, but a larger cut shows the alliance’s “disregard for the economic woes of, and geo-political alignment with, global partners,” he wrote. “What may have been argued as an opportunistic gamble exploiting geo-political supply kinks for self-interest advantage is now in danger of being interpreted as an affront to the U.S. and its allies (in protestation of Russia price cap plans) that aligns with Russia,” he added. — Abigail Ng Chinese EV battery maker opens flat in Hong Kong market debut Electric vehicle battery maker China Aviation Lithium Battery (CALB) traded flat in its debut session after raising 9.86 billion Hong Kong dollars ($1.26 billion) in its initial public offering, according to a filing. The offer price was 38 Hong Kong dollars ($4.84) per share. Shares allocated to retail investors in Hong Kong were undersubscribed, with only 21% purchased — representing 1% of the entire offering. Bostic added that it likely “will take some time” to get inflation back to the Fed’s 2% target as “we are still decidedly in the inflationary woods, not out of them.” From a rates perspective, Bostic said he envisions the Fed’s benchmark levy rising to a 4%-4.5% before policymakers can take a step back to evaluate progress. The fed funds rate currently sits in a range of 3%-3.25%; projections the FOMC released in September foresee rates rising to 4.6% in 2023, putting Bostic slightly to the dovish side of the committee. However, he added that he would say to anyone expecting the Fed to cut rates next year, “Not so fast.” Bostic is not a voting member of the FOMC either this year or next, though he does get to voice his policy stance during meetings. —Jeff Cox Trade deficit fell more than expected in August The U.S. trade deficit fell slightly more than expected in August to its lowest level in more than a year, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Wednesday. The trade shortfall declined to $67.4 billion, a $3.1 billion drop from the previous month that was a bit better than the Dow Jones estimate of $67.7 billion. That marked the lowest level since May 2021. In March 2022, the deficit had hit a record $106.9 billion. Technology Issue At CHI Health Centers And Sister Facilities Across The Country Leaves Patients In The Dark – KMTV 3 News Now Omaha https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/technology-issue-at-chi-health-centers-and-sister-facilities-across-the-country-leaves-patients-in-the-dark-kmtv-3-news-now-omaha/ OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — CHI Health is experiencing a widespread technology-related security breach. According to a spokeswoman, the parent company for CHI, Common Spirit Health, was the victim of a security incident that appears to affect the organization’s computer systems across the country. On Wednesday, 3 News Now received an email from a CHI patient who showed up for their scheduled blood test and was turned away. The patient says the staff was unable to look up their medical records and they were not notified ahead of showing up that they would not be seen. The situation, says the patient, is frustrating. A CHI employee tells 3 News Now that when patients walk in, staff essentially don’t know why the patient is there. They added that everyone has to fill out a hard copy of their patient information forms. “Another really big impact for us has been virtual visits where patients actually connect through there. We connect through the electronic health records system,” the CHI employee said over Zoom. “So if a patient doesn’t have our scheduling phone number to our program, then we are not able to do those visits at all. So we don’t know. Those patients are being left in the dark essentially if they connect and we are not there.” Another individual said they have no access to patient information and reminder calls for appointments are not happening either. They said they get updates every two hours and, right now, there is not an estimated time of restoration. There were several patients coming and going from one of the clinics on Wednesday and we spoke to a couple who were turned away after requesting an X-ray. They now have to go to the emergency room. 3 News Now reached out to CHI again to find out who is being impacted, what appointments are impacted, and how the healthcare system is currently handling patient care and information. We had not heard back at the time this story aired Wednesday evening. Resident Sues Wood Products Company Over California Wildfire – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/resident-sues-wood-products-company-over-california-wildfire-69news-wfmz-tv/ SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California man who lost his home in a wildfire last month has sued a wood products company at the center of the blaze, accusing it of failing to address the risk of a fire starting on its property. The fire started near the Roseburg Forest Products Co. mill on Sept. 2 in the small town of Weed near the California-Oregon border. It eventually burned more than six square miles (15.5 square kilometers), destroyed 118 buildings and killed two people. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is still investigating the cause of the fire. The mill produces its own electricity from wood remnants, a process that produces hot ash that is then sprayed with water from a machine. The company says it is investigating whether that machine, which it says is supplied by a third-party, failed to cool the ash enough, which could have started the fire. Tuesday, lawyers for 61-year-old Robert Davies sued the company, saying it did not make sure the machine was adequately designed, inspected and maintained — making the shed where the ashes were stored “a tinderbox awaiting a spark.” Instead of fixing the machine, the lawsuit says the company relied on its employees to put out fires, resulting in “a number of unreported fires at the facility.” “It begs the question, what was done from a safety standpoint to be able to address these fires that had occurred by using the correct technology and systems that would not rely solely on humans to be able to intervene,” Frank Pitre, one of Davies’ lawyers, said during a press conference on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the company declined to comment. The company has set aside $50 million to support victims of the fire, and so far it has compensated more than 300 people. That included Davies, who received $5,000. The lawsuit says this wasn’t enough to compensate him for the loss of his home of over 30 years and everything inside it. Pitre said he doesn’t believe the fire was a freak accident, saying multiple fires occurred on the site leading up to the blaze, known as the Mill Fire, which began on Sept. 2. He added the area was notorious for high winds during certain parts of the year. Terry Anderlini, another lawyer representing Davies, said Wednesday that the fire should never have happened. “We’re here to bring this forward and get to the truth of the matter,” Anderlini said. Warmer temperatures and drier conditions as a result of climate change have sped up the cadence of wildfires in Western states, scientists say. Wildfires have devastated communities in California, which, in the last five years, has seen the largest and most destructive fires in history. The Mill Fire started less than a quarter mile (0.3 kilometers) from the Weed City Fire Department and burned for 11 days. It prompted Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in Siskiyou County and resulted in federal grant money to fight the blaze and support residents. Davies, who previously worked for an engineering company that contracted with the U.S. military, said he was in his home with his 25-year-old son when the fire started. After hearing helicopters flying from above, Davies walked outside and saw smoke coming over a hill. Within less than an hour, the smoke reached his house, he said. Davies and his son left their home with laundry baskets and clothes. Among the items left behind in Davies’ house were Disney collectibles he planned to will to his 36-year-old daughter. Davies said his family moved to the house in the mountains at least in part to avoid crime in larger cities. “In a way, it was kind of like a fairytale,” Davies said. “We never had to worry. And that’s all been stripped from, not only myself, but my children.” Sophie Austin is a corps member for the Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. Design Population based prospective cohort study. Setting The Nurses’ Health Study II (NHSII) and the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS I and II) in the United States. Participants 19 958 mother-child (45% boys, aged 7-17 years at study enrollment) pairs with a median follow-up of 4 years (interquartile range 2-5 years) until age 18 or the onset of overweight or obesity, including a subsample of 2925 mother-child pairs with information on peripregnancy diet. Main outcome measures Multivariable adjusted, log binomial models with generalized estimating equations and an exchangeable correlation structure were used to account for correlations between siblings and to estimate the relative risk of offspring overweight or obesity defined by the International Obesity Task Force. Results 2471 (12.4%) offspring developed overweight or obesity in the full analytic cohort. After adjusting for established maternal risk factors and offspring’s ultra-processed food intake, physical activity, and sedentary time, maternal consumption of ultra-processed foods during the child rearing period was associated with overweight or obesity in offspring, with a 26% higher risk in the group with the highest maternal ultra-processed food consumption (group 5) versus the lowest consumption group (group 1; relative risk 1.26, 95% confidence interval 1.08 to 1.47, P for trend0.001). In the subsample with information on peripregnancy diet, while rates were higher, peripregnancy ultra-processed food intake was not significantly associated with an increased risk of offspring overweight or obesity (n=845 (28.9%); group 5 v group 1: relative risk 1.17, 95% confidence interval 0.89 to 1.53, P fortrend=0.07). These associations were not modified by age, sex, birth weight, and gestational age of offspring or maternal body weight. Conclusions Maternal consumption of ultra-processed food during the child rearing period was associated with an increased risk of overweight or obesity in offspring, independent of maternal and offspring lifestyle risk factors. Further study is needed to confirm these findings and to understand the underlying biological mechanisms and environmental determinants. These data support the importance of refining dietary recommendations and the development of programs to improve nutrition for women of reproductive age to promote offspring health. Introduction Childhood obesity is rising at alarming rates in the United States.12 According to the National Center for Health Statistics and National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and severe obesity among children and young people aged 2-19 years have increased from 10.2%, 5.2%, and 1.0% in 1971-74 to 16.1%, 19.3%, and 6.1% in 2017-18, respectively.1 Childhood obesity increases the risk of major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease,3 diabetes, and cancers,4 and premature death.5 One of the potential contributors to the obesity epidemic among children and young people is the unhealthy Western style diet characterized by increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, which constitutes more than half of all energy intake among young people and adults in the US.67 Ultra-processed foods are extremely palatable, energy dense, convenient, and shelf stable products made from refined and inexpensive ingredients using a series of industrial processes.8 Ultra-processed foods contain various types of additives, including stabilizers, artificial flavors, and artificial colors, and contain little, if any, whole food ingredients.89 Further, ultra-processed foods generally have higher sugar, sodium, and saturated fat content compared with less processed foods.89 Consistent evidence has linked ultra-processed food intake to excess body fat, overweight, and obesity in adults101112 and children.1314 Because the development of obesity can be attributed to the combined influence of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors,15 maternal diet might influence offspring’s predisposition to obesity and diet choice.161718 While Strohmaier and colleagues and Chen and colleagues have linked a healthy pregnancy diet to a reduced risk of obesity in children,1718 Dhana and colleagues showed that a healthier maternal lifestyle during offspring’s childhood and adolescence was associated with lower obesity risk in offspring.16 However, the specific impact of maternal ultra-processed food consumption during these two critical periods on offspring’s body weight remains unknown. We used cohorts of mother-child pairs to test our hypothesis that maternal intake of ultra-processed food during offspring childhood and adolescence (that is, child rearing period) was positively associated with the risk of incident overweight or obesity in offspring at age 7-18 years. We then analyzed the association between consumption of ultra-processed food during peripregnancy and offspring risk of overweight or obesity. Understanding these associations might help advance dietary recommendations and inspire actionable policies to improve maternal and offspring health. Methods Study population We included longitudinal data from mothers and their offspring who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study II (NHS II) and the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS I and II), respectively. The NHS II enrolled 116 429 female registered nurses aged 25-42 years when established in 1989, with questionnaires mailed biennially to gain information on relevant medical history and risk factors.19 From 1991, a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was also mailed every four years.20 The GUTS I cohort was established in 1996 when 16 882 children (aged 8-15 years) of NHS II participants completed the initial questionnaire on health and lifestyle and were followed up every year between 1997 and 2001, and biennially thereafter. In 2004, 10 918 children (aged 7-17 years) of NHS II participants joined the extended GUTS II cohort and were followed up in 2006, 2008, and 2011, and biennially thereafter. The study was approved by the Committees on the Use of Human Subjects in Research at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Voluntarily returning the self-administered questionnaire was considered informed consent in both cohorts. Participants A total of 18 920 mothers and 27 783 children were matched between NHS II and two GUTS cohorts and were eligible for our study (fig 1). We excluded mother-child pairs with implausible maternal energy intake (600 kcal/day or 3500 kcal/day, 411 mothers to 559 children) and pregnancy during follow-up (846 mothers, 1220 children). Additionally, we excluded mother-child pairs when children had missing baseline height and weight, or when they were overweight or had obesity at baseline (3110 mothers, 6046 children). The final analytic cohort included 19 958 children born to 14 553 mothers. To assess maternal consumption of ultra-processed food during peripregnancy (one year dietary assessment period that covered at least part of pregnancy), we restricted the analytic cohort to mother-child pairs when the mother had a singleton pregnancy because a multiple p...

Merrill The Mainstay Kelly Reaches 200 Innings Sports Illustrated
Merrill “The Mainstay” Kelly Reaches 200 Innings – Sports Illustrated https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/merrill-the-mainstay-kelly-reaches-200-innings-sports-illustrated/ After his start on September 24th against the Giants, Merrill Kelly was asked about his personal goal of reaching 200 innings.  “That’s pretty important to me, to be honest with you. You’ve heard me talk about for four years now on what I pride myself on as far as being a starting pitcher, and that’s definitely eating as many innings as I can. I feel like that 200 mark is a big one for starting pitching, especially nowadays.” Indeed, in the modern game pitchers need to go max effort to navigate lineups because unlike earlier eras, hitters one through nine can take you deep at any time. At the same time teams are less willing to let pitchers face the lineup the third time through. The result has been fewer and fewer 200 inning seasons since the Diamondbacks came into the league 24 years ago in 1998. That year there were 52 such seasons in MLB. Last year there were four.  Coming into play today there were just five pitchers who had already reached 200 innings in 2022. Two pitchers crossed that threshold in this game. Corbin Burnes came in with 199 innings, and pitched three scoreless innings before coming out of the game. Kelly reached the milestone in the sixth inning. The last time a Diamondbacks pitcher went 200 innings was in 2018, when Patrick Corbin and Zack Greinke did it.  Things didn’t look promising for Kelly when the game started. He began the first inning with a 10 pitch walk to Christian Yelich, who was later caught stealing on a great throw from Carson Kelly. He gave up a single to Willy Adames, but then got the next two batters, using 20 pitches to get through the inning. He needed 18 more pitches in the second inning, working around a one out walk and a stolen base.  Kelly was more efficient in the third and fourth innings, needing just 23 pitches to retire all six batters. Milwaukee got to him in the sixth for one  in the fifth. A single by Keston Huira and double by Victor Caratini gave the Brewers second and third with one out. A ground out to third by Tyrone Taylor scored the line run Kelly gave up today.  Scroll to Continue In the sixth inning a base hit and a groundout put another runner in scoring position for the Brewers. But Kelly struck out Luis Urias and Caron Kelly threw out Willy Adames trying to steal third for the inning ending double play.  That was all for Kelly, as Torey Lovullo turned it over to the bullpen with the game tied at 1-1. Kelly’s final line was was Six innings, four hits, 1 earned run, two walks and seven K’s. He finishes the year 13-8, 3.37 ERA. He led the team in starts with 33 and innings with 200.1, earning the nickname “The Mainstay”.  The offense started slowly today thanks to Burnes electric stuff dominating the first three innings. He didn’t allow a baserunner while striking out five. Burnes 243 strikeouts led the National League in 2022. But Craig Counsel pulled him after three innings and went to the bullpen.  The D-backs immediately pounced on reliever Aaron Ashby. Pavin Smith singled with one out and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder. One out later Christian Walker singled him home for his 94th RBI of the season.  Josh Rojas doubled to the wall in right center but Walker was thrown out at home trying to score on a great relay throw from Adames.  The D-backs had a runner in scoring position in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings but failed to score. It looked like those missed opportunities would come back to haunt when Sean Poppen gave up a go ahead solo homer to Rowdy Tellez in the eighth, breaking the 1-1 tie. Poppen had come in when Caleb Smith had to exit with a left elbow injury with two outs. After the game Torey Lovullo said Smith would receive imaging tomorrow. Smith had become a very effective long man out of the bullpen and it would be a big loss for the team’s 2023 plans if he were to require surgery.  Despite that setback, the D-backs would not be denied. Walker lead off with a single, his third hit of the game. Josh Rojas then came up and launched his ninth homer of the year for the 3-2 lead. Corbin Carroll went yard next, upping the lead to 4-2. Kevin Ginkel closed out the win with a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year. The Diamondbacks finish on a high note and a season ending record of 74-88, a 22 win improvement over 2021.  After the game Torey Lovullo said about the late comeback:  “Our guys are intense, they don’t shut down”.   With a bevy of young players that arrived this season and performed well, and more on the way, the team is on the right path and if they can address their bullpen issues should have a good chance to finish over .500 in 2023 and compete for a playoff spot.

Argos Advertisement On Billboard In The Metaverse Recently, Argos collaborated with Ocean Outdoor and Landvault to drop a ‘Web 3 metaverse DOOH package’. For more context, DOOH stands for Digital Out of Home. The package launched with a dual-world campaign which promoted Argos’ brand and products. Furthermore, the dual-world campaign has already appeared in the Metaverse and physical locations. The physical locations include Ocean’s Holland Park Roundabout tri-screen in London and roadside locations in Birmingham and Manchester. Alongside, the metaverse location consists of an NFT replica of the same billboard inside Somnium Space VR Metaverse. And it will run until October 23 Becky Desert — the campaign manager of Argos, said they hope to drive consideration and awareness of products that people don’t think of Argos for. Admittedly, she talks about how showing up in a new way is “Part of changing shoppers’ minds”. What’s more, Argon excitedly jumped on the opportunity to appear in the metaverse advert, primarily since it centres around tech.  Likewise, Catherin Morgan — Director of Ocean Labs, stated how Ocean’s Metaverse would give brands an edge to access young and tech-savvy users. Why did Argos join the metaverse space? More Details On The Dual World Advertisement Project Ocean Media, in partnership with LandVault, released Ocean metaverse collection. If Rosey the robot from The Jetsons was real, I’d take a second job just to afford her. With so many amazing home tech items to choose from, it can be hard to know what you should actually buy. That’s why I always check big online sales for awesome deals on home tech. Amazon is getting ready to drop a secret sale and let me tell you…it’s great. Buckle your seatbelts because these tech deals are about to take off.   You will love our editor’s curated product picks! FYI: We are an Amazon affiliate partner and may get a share of the sale of your purchase (at no cost to you). Prepare For The Day Ahead With An Echo Smart Display Wanna know how I remember everything that’s going on in my day? I rely on my Echo smart display. I can see my calendar, make calls, or even cue up music for a living room dance party—and I do it all with the help of Alexa. Look ma, no hands!  Live The Cool Life With An Ice Maker You know those people who go into gas stations just to buy a cup of ice? My sister is one of them. So, I gave her a nugget ice maker to keep at home. Needless to say, we know who her favorite sister is now! Be “Big Brother” With A Wireless Outdoor Security Camera Yes, a security camera can make you feel safer at home. But all those funny videos you see with trick-or-treaters running from a spooky home in fear? We only have those thanks to wireless outdoor security cameras. Protect your home or catch some funny moments. Either way, this is a major home gadget steal.   Moonwalk Across Clean Floors With A Robot Vacuum As far as I’m concerned, the robot vacuum is the greatest home tech invention in the last 50 years. This Roomba vacuums, empties itself, and can be programmed to complete smart cleaning tasks. I will never go back to lugging around a full-sized vacuum again!      Hear It Better With Apple AirPods Whether I’m at the gym or on an airplane, I need music. Do you know what else I need? Just a little bit of quiet to hear my music. That dream won’t come true, but my Airpods do an amazing job of canceling outside noises so I can kick back—or kickbox—and listen.  Boost Your IQ With An Apple Watch 7 In Black I don’t workout unless I can see my progress in charts and figures. I bought an Apple Watch 7 because I thought it would help me stay on track at the gym, and it has. I love the digital wallet and heart health features too—and it works seamlessly with my iPhone.      “Leap” Into Smart Entertainment With This Smart TV I’m getting old. I remember having to get up, find a blank VHS tape, and go through a complicated programming ritual to record a TV show. Do you know how many times I missed Quantum Leap because I did it wrong? Thank goodness for the smart TV. Be Iconic With An Ionic Hair Dryer Look, I have big hair. It would be a huge fluffball by 2 p.m. if I didn’t throw in heat serum and dry it every morning. My stylist insisted I switch to an ionic hair dryer to protect my locks. I’m so glad I listened to her because I love this thing.  Stay Connected With An Apple Watch 7 With Case I bet you know someone who can’t stand to be away from their phone. Why not give them the ultimate tech gift and splurge on the most-loved smart watch? This one has an aluminum case, so it’s durable and lightweight. Win win! Go Mess-Free With A Robot Vacuum Once upon a time, I liked vacuuming. Then I got pets and kids, and all they do is make messes. To save my sanity, I invested in a robot vacuum. Now my house looks great without me vacuuming every day. Bring A Personal Massage Therapist Anywhere With This Leg Massager Just strap on these babies, and boom! A professional massage and you never have to leave home. The combination of massage, compression, and heat in this leg massager always makes me happy. This is one of my favorite tech gifts to give others, too—everybody needs a leg massage now and again. Say Bye-Bye to Baggage Fees With This Digital Scale One time I was in Turkey, and I may have bought a few ceramics too many. My luggage weighed in at 83 pounds. Oh, I paid to get that home! Now I carry one of the coolest tech devices ever: a digital baggage scale. I will never pay overweight baggage fees again.   Beat The Heat With A Portable Neck Fan Ahh, warm-weather sports. There’s nothing like watching your nephew swing wildly at a baseball while sweat runs down your face. It might not make the game more exciting, but my wearable neck fan definitely makes it easier for me to make it through all those innings.   Pop Some Bubbles With An Electric Bottle Opener I consider myself a master of opening bottles—most of the time. It only takes one crumbled stopper to realize how bad cork tastes in your drink. An electric bottle opener is better at this job than any human, trust me. Don’t worry, you can serve that crumbled-cork bottle to the snobby guests who make fun of your high-tech opener. Zone It Out With A White Noise Machine Insomnia is one of my oldest enemies. I used to lay in bed at night obsessing over every little noise I heard. I tried listening to music, but I obsessed over that, too. My brother suggested I try a white noise machine. It’s perfect for drowning out unwanted noises and helping my mind calm down. Make Your Dentist Happy With A Water Flosser My relationship with my dentist is complicated. I appreciate that she takes care of my teeth, but honestly, I’m scared of her too. Anything that keeps her out of my mouth is a good thing. This water flosser has helped me stay cavity free for my last few visits. If you’re obsessed with dental hygiene, this is the right home gadget for you.  Un-Lose Everything With Item Locator Tags I have wasted hours of my life looking for my car keys. I wasted so much of my husband’s time enlisting him in the hunt that he bought me these key finder tags. So far, I’ve been able to find my keys and my phone fast thanks to this handy home gadget. Now I just need to make sure I don’t lose the locator remote… Host The Party With A Bluetooth Speaker Fact: almost everybody under 50 has a Bluetooth speaker. If you don’t, time to join this millennium! If you have friends who don’t have one of these versatile, play-anywhere home gadgets, it’s time to give the (tech) gift of music. Breathe Easy With A HEPA Air Purifier Allergies have always been a big problem for me. I just want to open my windows at home without sneezing 15 times! An air purifier can’t remove all the nasty junk from the air, but it can go goes a long way towards improving air quality. For the best results, get one of these home gadgets with a HEPA filter.   Shake It Up With A Personal Blender Have you ever noticed that it’s hard to make a one-serving smoothie in a full-size blender? The ingredients either fly around wildly or don’t get mixed at all. That’s why I have a personal blender. It’s a tasty tech deal!   Speed Up Meal Prep With An Electric Pressure Cooker My mom gave me her old-fashioned pressure cooker when I went to college. I nearly destroyed my dorm’s kitchen. Fast forward 15 years, and I can finally cook beans fast thanks to a much safer electric pressure cooker! Spoil Yourself With A Towel Warmer Confession: I used to put my towels in the dryer so they’d be warm when I got out of the shower. It was so cozy…and wasteful. Now I’m eco-friendly, so I do it with a towel warmer instead.

U.S. Weighs Aid To Cuba Following Hurricane And Request From Havana – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-weighs-aid-to-cuba-following-hurricane-and-request-from-havana-the-washington-post/ The Biden administration is having “ongoing conversations” with the Cuban government on “the humanitarian needs of the Cuban people” in the wake of the devastation on the island caused by Hurricane Ian, a senior State Department official said Wednesday. The talks follow a rare request for emergency aid last week from the Havana government after Cuba suffered an islandwide loss of electricity, floods and extensive damage after its western third took a direct hit from Ian as it made its way toward Florida. Neither side has specified what kind of aid is being discussed. The State Department official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic efforts. But the talks mark a new stage in sporadic efforts to communicate following President Donald Trump’s rollback of the normalization of ties that began in 2015, when Barack Obama renewed U.S. diplomatic relations with Havana’s communist government more than five decades after they were severed. President Biden campaigned on a pledge to relax the renewed sanctions and isolation of Cuba imposed by Trump, who also reinstated Cuba’s U.S. designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Biden’s administration has made only minor adjustments to the relationship, however, including allowing increases in the number of commercial U.S. flights to the island, loosening restrictions on sending remittances to family members by Cuban Americans, and permitting certain categories of U.S. citizen to travel there. Recently, the administration reversed an earlier refusal to issue a Treasury Department license to a Maryland-based producer of electric scooters and bicycles to privately owned companies in Cuba. The license was granted under an exception to existing trade restrictions for reasons relating to environmental quality. Cuba’s appeal for humanitarian assistance comes as the island — even before the storm and a deadly fire that struck a large Cuban oil storage facility in August — has struggled with a major economic crisis, including shortages of food and fuel. Last week brought the first significant street protests, in the capital and other cities, since major anti-government demonstrations were put down with a violent security response in July 2021. Last week’s protests appeared in large part to be a response to the islandwide blackout and general economic strife, although chants of “freedom” were also heard. The demonstrations have reportedly died down as power has been restored to some areas, although frequent blackouts continue to occur. There are also sporadic cuts to internet service, variously blamed by Cubans on the electricity problem and possible government intervention. Physical proximity, with only 90 miles separating the two countries, has meant that any hurricane affecting Cuba is likely also to take aim at the United States. Havana has rebuffed U.S. offers of assistance following previous major storms. In 2005, the United States rejected a Cuban offer to send physicians to New Orleans to assist in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Biden administration offered unspecified technical assistance following an August fire sparked by lightning at a fuel storage facility in the city of Matanzas, east of Havana. The massive blaze continued for days and added to overall fuel shortages on the island. The Cuban government said it was grateful but did not follow up on the offer beyond the reported acceptance of some firefighting equipment. The two government have also held talks related to the record number of Cubans seeking admission to the United States across the Mexican border. In April, according to unpublished U.S. Customs and Border Protection figures obtained by The Washington Post, CBP was on pace to apprehend more than 155,000 Cubans during the current fiscal year, nearly four times the 2021 total and a twelvefold increase over 2020.

Samsung Electronics Envisions Hyper-Growth In Memory And Logic Semiconductors Through Intensified Industry Collaborations At Samsung Tech Day 2022 Business Wire
Samsung Electronics Envisions Hyper-Growth In Memory And Logic Semiconductors Through Intensified Industry Collaborations At Samsung Tech Day 2022 – Business Wire https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/samsung-electronics-envisions-hyper-growth-in-memory-and-logic-semiconductors-through-intensified-industry-collaborations-at-samsung-tech-day-2022-business-wire/ SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today showcased a series of cutting-edge semiconductor solutions set to drive digital transformation through the decade, at Samsung Tech Day 2022. An annual conference since 2017, the event returned to in-person attendance at the Signia by Hilton San Jose hotel after three years. This year’s event, attended by more than 800 customers and partners, featured presentations from Samsung’s Memory and System LSI business leaders — including Jung-bae Lee, President and Head of Memory Business; Yong-In Park, President and Head of System LSI Business; and Jaeheon Jeong, Executive Vice President and Head of Device Solutions (DS) Americas Office — on the company’s latest advancements and its vision for the future. System LSI Business Highlights In the morning session of this year’s Tech Day, the System LSI Business emphasized its goal of becoming a ‘total solution fabless’ through maximizing the synergy between its unique and wide-range product lineup. As Samsung Electronics’ fabless IC design house, the System LSI Business currently offers around 900 products, which include SoC (System on Chip), image sensor, modem, display driver IC (DDI), power management IC (PMIC) and security solutions. The System LSI Business not only makes leading individual products, but is also a total solution provider that can merge the various logic technologies into one platform, in order to deliver optimized solutions to customers. “In an age that requires machines to learn and think as people do, the importance of logic chips, which play the roles of the brain, heart, nervous system and eyes, is growing to unprecedented levels,” said Yong-In Park, President and Head of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will converge and combine its technology embedded in various products like SoC, sensor, DDI and modem, in order to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a total solution provider.” A Vision of Chips with Human-Like Performance The Fourth Industrial Revolution was a key theme in System LSI’s Tech Day sessions. The System LSI Business’ logic chips are crucial physical foundations of Hyper-Intelligence, Hyper-Connectivity and Hyper-Data, which are the key areas of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Samsung Electronics aims to enhance the performance of these chips to a level at which they can carry out human tasks just as well as people can. With this vision in mind, the System LSI Business is focusing on improving the performance of its essential IP like NPU (Neural Processing Unit) and modem, as well as innovating CPU (Central Processing Unit) and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) technology by collaborating with global industry leading companies. The System LSI Business is also continuing its work on ultra-high resolution image sensors so that its chips can capture images as the human eye does, and also has plans for sensors that can play the role of all five of the human senses. Next-Generation Logic Chips Showcased Samsung Electronics revealed a number of advanced logic chip technology for the first time at the Tech Day booth, including 5G Exynos Modem 5300, Exynos Auto V920, and QD OLED DDI, which are essential parts of various industries such as mobile, home appliance and automotive. Chips that were newly released or announced this year including the premium mobile processor Exynos 2200 were also on display, along with the 200MP ISOCELL HP3 – the image sensor with the industry’s smallest 0.56-micrometer (μm)-pixels. Built on the most advanced 4-nanometer (nm) EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography) process, and combined with cutting-edge mobile, GPU and NPU technology, the Exynos 2200 provides the finest experience for smartphone users. The ISOCELL HP3, with a 12 percent smaller pixel size than the predecessor’s 0.64μm, can enable an approximately 20 percent reduction in camera module surface area, allowing smartphone manufacturers to keep their premium devices slim. Samsung showcased its ISOCELL HP3 in action by showing the attendees of Tech Day the picture quality of photographs taken with a 200MP sensor camera, as well as demonstrating the workings of System LSI’s fingerprint security IC for biometric payment cards that combines a fingerprint sensor, Secure Element (SE) and Secure Processor, adding an extra layer of authentication and security in payment cards Memory Business Highlights In a year marking 30 years and 20 years of leadership in DRAM and NAND flash memory respectively, Samsung unveiled its fifth-generation 10nm-class (1b) DRAM as well as eighth- and ninth-generation Vertical NAND (V-NAND), affirming the company’s commitment to continue providing the most powerful combination of memory technologies over the next decade. Samsung also emphasized how the company will demonstrate greater resilience through collaborative partnerships in the face of new industry challenges. “One trillion gigabytes is the total amount of memory Samsung has made since its beginning over 40 years ago. About half of that trillion was produced in the last three years alone, indicating just how fast digital transformation is progressing,” said Jung-bae Lee, President and Head of Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “As advances in memory bandwidth, capacity and power efficiency enable new platforms and these, in turn, stimulate more semiconductor innovations, we will increasingly push for a higher level of integration on the journey toward digital coevolution.” DRAM Solutions to Advance Data Intelligence Samsung’s 1b DRAM is currently under development with plans for mass production in 2023. To overcome challenges in DRAM scaling beyond the 10nm range, the company has been developing disruptive solutions in patterning, materials and architecture, with technology like High-K material well underway. The company then highlighted upcoming DRAM solutions such as 32Gb DDR5 DRAM, 8.5Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM and 36Gbps GDDR7 DRAM that will bring new capabilities to data center, HPC, mobile, gaming and automotive market segments. Expanding beyond conventional DRAM, Samsung also underscored the importance of tailored DRAM solutions such as HBM-PIM, AXDIMM and CXL that can fuel system-level innovation in better handling the explosive growth of data worldwide. 1,000+ V-NAND Layers by 2030 Since its inception a decade ago, Samsung’s V-NAND technology has progressed through eight generations, bringing 10 times the layer count and 15 times the bit growth. Samsung’s most recent, 512Gb eighth-generation V-NAND features a bit density improvement of 42%, attaining the industry’s highest bit density among 512Gb triple-level cell (TLC) memory products to date. The world’s highest capacity 1Tb TLC V-NAND will be available to customers by the end of the year. The company also noted that its ninth-generation V-NAND is under development and slated for mass production in 2024. By 2030, Samsung envisions stacking over 1,000 layers to better enable data-intensive technologies of the future. As AI and big data applications drive the need for faster and higher-capacity memory, Samsung will continue to leapfrog bit density by accelerating the transition to quad-level cell (QLC), while further enhancing power efficiency in support of more sustainable customer operations worldwide. More Far-Reaching Solutions amidst Greater Collaboration Samsung introduced an extensive portfolio of storage solutions spanning data center, enterprise server, mobile, client, consumer and automotive applications. The company highlighted its high-performance, low-power computational storage optimized for AI and how it can contribute to eco-conscious computing. Samsung also presented a new DRAM-less SSD, the PM9C1a, which supports both PCIe 4.0 and 5.0. Samsung then shared aggressive plans to lead the industry in intelligent mobility solutions. The company discussed its wide-ranging memory offerings designed for every modern automotive function, from in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), autonomous driving (AD) and advanced driver assisted systems (ADAS), clusters and gateways to telematics. Since entering the automotive memory market in 2015, Samsung has been rapidly growing its market presence with the intent of becoming the largest automotive memory provider by 2025. Reaffirming its overriding goals of enhancing customer value and pursuing a customer-oriented development philosophy, Samsung stressed its intent to further expand its ecosystem partnerships. To stimulate more widespread open innovation, Samsung revealed a key element of its blueprint for greater customer collaboration. The company will open a Samsung Memory Research Center (SMRC) where customers and partners can test and verify Samsung memory and software solutions in various server environments. Beginning with the opening of its first SMRC in Korea in the fourth quarter of this year, Samsung plans to later launch additional hubs in the U.S. and around the world, in collaboration with ecosystem partners like Red Hat and Google Cloud. About Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. Samsung inspires the world and shapes the future with transformative ideas and technologies. The company is redefining the worlds of TVs, smartphones, wearable devices, tablets, digital appliances, network systems, and memory, system LSI, foundry and LED solutions. From sunbathing on the shores of a Caribbean Island to snowboarding down steep mountain ranges in the west, let this roundup serve as inspiration for your year-end jaunt. While you’re packing your favorite travel essentials, don’t forget to pack your patience too. It’s no secret that airports can get busy during the holiday season, but don’t stress. Plan ahead and keep key travel tips like arriving at the airport at least two hours (three hours if traveling internationally) before your departure top of mind. You’ll save time and avoid unnecessary anxiety. Who wants to start their vacation stressed out? No one. So, plan accordingly and mentally prepare for minor hiccups. Now that you’ve gotten some of the travel logistics out of the way, clear your mind and get ready to end the year with a bang by exploring some of the best destinations to visit in December. The Golden State boasts a host of bountiful natural wonders, but not many are as breathtaking as Santa Barbara’s glorious coastline. In December, visitors can take advantage of the city’s moderate winter and witness mesmerizing sunsets at one of its broad, sandy beaches. Located just an hour and a half drive north of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara is home to myriad farm-to-table restaurants and exquisite wineries. As a world-class destination, the lodging options don’t disappoint. Guests can stay at Drift Santa Barbara, a 45-key boutique property located on a car-free promenade with floor-to-ceiling windows where natural light and coastal breezes abound. Feeling festive? On December 11th, visitors can catch the 36th Annual Parade of Lights as the city’s harbor transforms into a winter wonderland. Plus, the season is also the perfect time to catch the return of migrating gray whales in the Santa Barbara Channel. EXPLORE NOW Nestled in the rolling hills of Central Texas, this region sits atop the Edwards Plateau — located west of San Antonio and Austin. With picturesque landscapes and unique terrain, the quaint small towns that make up the area are ideal for those seeking an exciting, nature-filled excursion. Adventurous visitors can crawl through some of the numerous caves and caverns formed from limestone bedrock hidden beneath the rolling landscape. After exploring these awe-inspiring natural wonders, visitors can relax with a glass of wine from Pedernales Cellars, one of the region’s nine wineries. The pristine setting calls for lodging that highlights the scenery. Visitors can stay at Lakeway Resort and Spa, the only resort situated on the banks of Austin’s famed Lake Travis. Perfect for couples or families, the resort has amenities that everyone can enjoy including a spa, pool playground with adults-only and family friendly pools. Plus, with the lake just steps from the property, guests can partake in outdoor activities like sailing, boating and fishing. EXPLORE NOW There’s more to Nashville than country music and world-famous hot chicken. While those things are noteworthy (and tasty), the city also boasts a burgeoning arts and culture scene. With a variety of art galleries and museums that span interests, visitors can satisfy their hunger for history and cultural enlightenment. While it’s a popular city to visit all year-round, the holiday season really makes the Music City sing. Thanks to its mild winters, December is a great time to explore the city decked out in a million twinkling lights. Out-of-towners can stay at Hotel Fraye or Bode Nashville and head to the Gaylord Opryland Resort for a variety of holiday-themed activities and attractions such as snow tubing, ice skating, carriage rides, gingerbread decorating and an elaborate light display. Also, let’s face it — live music is a must when visiting the Music City. Catch a holiday concert at the iconic Ryman Auditorium featuring country superstars like LeAnn Rimes or Amy Grant & Vince Gill. After the show, indulge in warm craft cocktails at the Rooftop Lounge at Bobby Hotel where you can rent a heated igloo while taking in an incredible view of downtown Nashville from 14 stories up. Cool, right? EXPLORE NOW Just 30 minutes northwest of Denver, Boulder is a great December destination — and for good reason. Surprisingly, hotels offer their lowest rates and not much snow accumulates, which is optimal for hiking along winter trails. While it’s known for its myriad outdoor activities, breweries and proximity to the Rocky Mountains National Park, Boulder is also an urban oasis brimming with remarkable restaurant options. From lavish eateries like Flagstaff House with enviable mountain views and locally-sourced fare to more casual dining choices like The Attic Bar & Bistro, the food scene in Boulder is worthy of recognition. The arts and culture scene is also a draw. From December 3rd – December 5th, visitors and locals alike can celebrate the holiday season at the CU Boulder’s Holiday Festival, a decades-old tradition of musical performances by students and world-class faculty. EXPLORE NOW Surrounded by natural beauty, Salt Lake City is like a breath of fresh air — especially during the winter. With spectacular mountain views at every turn, visitors will be awestruck by its splendor. Also, with outdoor recreational activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, and snowboarding available at countless nearby resorts, the state’s capital is an ideal destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Physical activity not your thing? Don’t worry. The city offers so much more. Throughout the month, visitors can stop by the holiday art market at Alta Ski Resort, take full moon lift rides at Snowbird, or take a self-guided tour of the ten striking murals by some of Salt Lake’s most renowned local artists. The city is also a hotspot for chef-driven restaurants like SLC Eatery, providing a constantly evolving take on modern American cuisine and White Horse, a modern American Brasserie and bar. Additionally, foodies who appreciate cheese can check out Caputo’s Gourmet Market, which specializes in the art of cheese making — working with local farms to create distinct flavors. Chocolate lovers aren’t left out. The market is also the go-to spot for artisan chocolate produced in Utah. EXPLORE NOW Looking for a welcoming retreat with stretches of sugar-white beaches and turquoise blue water? If so, South Walton is a sure bet. Located in northwest Florida, it’s home to 16 beach neighborhoods. Scenic and serene, it’s the perfect backdrop for family vacations and couple getaways. From taking in a live theatrical performance at the Emerald Coast Theater to checking out art galleries like Red Bird and Foster, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities to keep them entertained. Seeking a more relaxed vibe? Visitors can stay at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa where they can unwind with rejuvenating spa treatments or put their putting skills to the test on the sprawling golf course. Plus, guests have exclusive beachfront access and on-property activities such as bike rentals, watersports, a tennis court, and more — making this a top choice for those seeking convenience and luxury. Unlike other Florida hotspot destinations, South Walton’s breezy coastal setting exudes intimate, small-town charm. EXPLORE NOW While Kennebunkport is a popular summer destination, it’s also a New England gem throughout the year as the city’s official slogan: “The Place to Be All Year Long,” suggests. Situated at the mouth of the Kennebunk River, on the Atlantic coast, Kennebunkport really delivers during the holiday season. Decked out with holiday lights and a possible dusting of snow, it’s a page right out of a winter storybook. Its famous Christmas Prelude (December 1 – December 11), is a can’t-miss attraction that includes Santa Claus arriving by lobster boat, tree lighting ceremonies and even a fireworks display. After partaking in all the festivities, visitors can nosh on local fare like classic lobster rolls and enjoy hearty chowders from Alisson’s Restaurant. EXPLORE NOW Tucked away in the Eastern Caribbean, Anguilla is known for its magnificent beaches and easygoing atmosphere. With 33 beaches, most boasting soft, white sand — it’s an undeniable paradise in December. From fun family activities like glass floor boat rides to romantic beachside dinners, the island has something for everyone. Visitors can stay at the Frangipani Beach Resort, a luxury boutique resort set in the middle of Meads Bay, one of Anguilla’s most renowned beaches. Featuring 23 rooms and suites, guests can take advantage of the plentiful amenities like beach and poolside service and complimentary water sports such as tubing and kayaking. EXPLORE NOW Thinking of becoming a digital nomad? If so, Costa Rica could be your next temporary home. With the recent digital nomad visa available to international workers, Americans can relocate to this popular Caribbean coast destination. And December is a good time to embark on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. For starters, it’s less humid, but still warm enough to feel balmy in comparison to the cold weather dominat...
