A Different Kind Of Separation Anxiety During My Wife’s Business Trip – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/a-different-kind-of-separation-anxiety-during-my-wifes-business-trip-the-washington-post/ “Get a cat,” people say when I tell them we have mice in the house. “I don’t need a cat,” I say. “I have a wife.” Except, for going on three weeks, I haven’t had a wife. Ruth’s been on a long business trip, leaving me to find the mousetraps (weren’t they under the sink?), bait them (why doesn’t cheese ever seem to work?) and position them (in the drawer under the oven or on the kitchen counter?). And should a mouse be so unlucky as to actually take the bait and spring the trap, it’s down to me to dispose of its little corpse, something Ruth is really good at. In fact, I tell myself it’s a job she likes doing. As she sits in her Paris hotel room, the Eiffel Tower visible from her window, Ruth is probably jealous of all the fun I’m having back home, doing all the dog’s walks, taking out the trash, picking up the farm-share vegetables, putting out the kitchen scraps for the compost people and hunting the mouse/mice. But this isn’t a column about a hapless husband who falls apart when he’s left to his own devices. Well, it isn’t totally about that. It’s about the weird ways we behave when we miss someone we love. One of those weird ways is resenting them before they’ve even left. I have some experience in this regard: experience with the cycle of separation and reunion. When I was about 12, my parents divorced. Thus began the typical back and forth of my brother and me for weekends, along with longer stays with one or the other parent. I remember how antsy all of us would get, not out of any animus — but from the mental preparation we had to go through before this changing of the guard. Mom’s house is like this, I’d think. Dad’s house is like that. I’m still at Mom’s house, but my mind is looking ahead to Dad’s house. I don’t think my mother much liked the penumbra I cast at these times. So it is when Ruth gets ready to be gone for three weeks. She’s preparing in her way — laying out her clothes in the spare room, pulling out a suitcase — and I’m preparing in mine: steeling myself for the solitude, hardening myself a bit, getting a little snippy. She’s not yet out of sight, but I’m slowly putting her out of mind. And then the Uber comes and she’s on her way to the airport. Sleeping is the hardest part. I stay up too late and wake up too early. I turn in on myself. I start to feel like an 18th century fur trapper, overwintering in some frozen corner of the great white north. I just have to make it until spring. And then, one day, just at the edge of my vision, something small and gray scurries across the kitchen floor. Look, I’m not afraid of mice. I’ve just managed to be conveniently otherwise occupied whenever they find their way into the house. And, like I said, Ruth seems so good at dealing with them. But Ruth’s not here. I find two classic wooden traps, bait them with cheese and put them in the oven drawer. I’m skunked the first night. I go online and read that mice can smell you if you’ve touched a trap with your bare skin, which I have, and that cheese is a lousy bait. I find a third trap and — wearing gloves — smear its trigger with Nutella. It goes atop the stove. I’m skunked again. And then one afternoon I go into the basement to gather my drum stuff for a gig my band has that night. I unzip the wheeled bag that holds my cymbal stands and am hit with the thick funk of dead mouse. On the one hand, the mouse — a mouse, anyway — is caught. On the other hand, I can’t bring this bag — ripe with the odor of decomposition — into a nightclub. I yank out the cymbal stands, put on rubber gloves, sheathing one in a plastic newspaper bag, remove the mouse corpse, and take it to the trash outside. Then I jump in the car and race to a music store. I call on the way and, like the pilot of a stricken plane radioing ahead with an order to foam the runway, I request that they get some drum hardware bags ready for me. Fixated as I am, I’m not thinking of Ruth at all, of resenting her, of missing her. But later that night, after the gig, trying to get comfortable in bed, I happily realize we’re past the halfway point of her trip. She’ll be home in a week and we’ll have a lot of catching up to do.

Medical Newsletter Launched By COVID Expands Its Focus – Concord Monitor https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/medical-newsletter-launched-by-covid-expands-its-focus-concord-monitor/ Published: 10/2/2022 2:23:33 PM An influential medical newsletter created to spread information about the pandemic is broadening its approach but, like the rest of us, can’t yet move away from COVID-19. “Betterment of public health is part of our mission that we probably haven’t focused on as much. But there is a role for us and the pandemic really showed us that,” said James Potter, CEO of the New Hampshire Medical Society. The group’s weekly email newsletter will change its name next month from “COVID-19 Weekly Update” to “Healthy New Hampshire.” Like all medical professionals, the non-profit association of more than 2,200 licensed physicians, medical residents and medical students saw things upended when the pandemic began. Potter says weekly Zoom calls to share information started in May 2020, two months after the state’s first COVID deaths, and proved very popular, sometimes reaching the 500-person limit. “Like all other states, our public health infrastructure is not where it needs to be today. A lot of organizations were basically operating in their own silos,” Potter said. “We thought, why don’t we try to connect these groups early, particularly around immunization.” This led to the creation of a weekly COVID-19 newsletter that curated and shared information and links from state, federal and medical organizations as well as news articles and research. Potter said other groups, including hard-hit nursing homes and assisted-living centers as well as school systems, have signed up. “It has grown to other practitioner groups, chambers of commerce, church organizations – many others,” he said. That includes media like the Monitor. The newsletter is not open to the general public. Open rates, the percentage of email addresses that get the newsletter and then click on it to at least read through the headlines, are usually above 50%, which is very high for email newsletters, and occasionally have topped 90% if there’s an ongoing issue, he said. Although the pandemic shows no signs of ending any time soon – hospitalization numbers from COVID-19 have crept back above 100 this month, according to the Hospital Association – Potter said the group wanted to expand its focus beyond the coronavirus. “What we learned from this is that there are a lot more organizations and individuals who are interested in public health issues,” said Potter. “At some point COVID becomes more endemic. It may rise again, but as it becomes endemic it’s like the flu and other things that are regularly rising in the community … no longer a pandemic.” Last week’s newsletter was still called “NH COVID-19 Weekly” and leads with information about the current pandemic. But it includes links to a CDC alert about a virus that can cause paralysis in children, updates on the monkeypox outbreak in New Hampshire and elsewhere, discussion about health warning labels for alcohol and an item about a telehealth pilot program in Manchester schools. “While information on the COVID pandemic will continue to be a prominent feature, we begin our transition to broader public health efforts in the Granite State,” a notice says at the top of the newsletter. “We’re thinking about public health on a much more collaborative and extended perspective – not only about immunizations but health screening, wellness, and dealing with internet misinformation,” he said.  “This is a way to approach that.”

Brown20 REC, 309 YD, 1 TD See New Posts Pinned Haasan Reddick with a hell of a day for the #Eagles. Strip sack and the fumble recovery. PHI in business at the Jaguars 24.  Pinned Terrible drop by Dallas Goedert. He had a sure fire TD if he caught that. Jake Elliott hits the 28-yard FG for PHI to go up 23-14 with 13:42 left.  Pinned Tyson Campbell was called for roughing the kicker. Just a dumb penalty by the Jaguars DB. Pinned Smart timeout by Nick Sirianni. Call timeout to kick with the wind at the Eagles back. Jake Elliott will get a FG attempt here to go up two scores. Pinned Now up to 102 yards. 6th career 100-yard game for Sanders.  Pinned Miles Sanders has 16 carries for 96 yards after that 35-yard run. Pinned Trevor Lawrence picked off going for Christian Kirk. James Bradberry read that like a book. Underthrown ball I think. Lawrence is 7 of 16 for 101 yards with a TD and INT. Kirk no catches on 6 targets. Pinned The Eagles have another drive stalled in the second half. Will be something to monitor today in a close game. They don’t score in the second half much.  Pinned Jordan Davis practically fell on Travis Etienne on that 1-yard loss. Pinned The Eagles defense has forced three straight three-and-outs (not counting the one play drive the Jaguars had to end the first half). Jacksonville’s last four possessions. 10 plays, 12 yards.  Pinned No Darius Slay yet. We’ll see how Zach McPhearson does in the second half.  Pinned The Eagles are the first team since at least 2000 with 17+ pts in 4 consecutive 2nd quarters. 20 unanswered to take the lead at half.  Pinned 4th-and-1. Eagles going for it here. Eagles 2 for 3 on 4th.  Pinned Miles Sanders TD. He has 11 carries for 49 yards. This drive belonged to him.  Pinned Trey Sermon gets his first carry with the Eagles. Went for 14 yards. Eagles in the red zone.  Pinned 3-and-out for the Eagles defense. All the momentum is on Philly’s side. It’s 14-7 jaguars and the Eagles are getting the ball back.  Pinned Jalen Hurts with his 4th rushing TD of the year. He got in on a 4th-and-goal and laid his helmet out when Devin Lloyd was about to hit him. Hurts took one for the team there. He’s not afraid of what’s coming. Pinned Dallas Goedert called for blocking downfield after his big catch. Took away an A.J. Brown TD.  Pinned Fletcher Cox recovered the fumble on 4th down. Eagles take over on downs. Possible momentum shifter.  Pinned Cam Robinson just pancaked James Bradberry to get Jamal Agnew that first down. The 1Q is over and Eagles fans are not happy. Jaguars up 14-0.  Pinned I don’t know what the Eagles were doing down 14-0 and going for it on a 4th-and-3 from the Jaguars 40. A.J. Brown was covered. DeVonta Smith was covered. This Jaguars defense is good and have been good all year. Pinned This is the Eagles largest deficit of the year. This is the most points allowed in the first half this season (14).  Pinned Doug Pederson and Press Taylor designing plays to get Jamal Agnew wide open on both his targets that drive. Slay’s return QUESTIONABLE. Mailata return QUESTIONABLE. Eagles down 14-0 to Jaguars in first quarter. Pinned Jamal Agnew was WIDE OPEN on 2 plays that drive. Eagles down 14-0. Agnew with the 2-yard TD.  Pinned Trevor Lawrence is carving up the Eagles defense right now. Really missing Slay and Avonte Maddox. Pinned The Jaguars have as many INTs this year as they did all of last year. They played 13 quarters. Pinned Zech McPhearson in for Darius Slay, who went to locker room. Pinned Miles Sanders came into this game with 13 receiving yards. Had 16 on that last reception. Pinned Scratch that. Slay was walking to the locker room.  Pinned Darius Slay was in on offense on that play. He’s was open — but Jalen Hurts threw a pick six the other way. Jaguars up early over #Eagles. 59 yards on the INT return by Andre Cisco.  See More

Big Data Is The Future Of Metaverse, In A Sustainable Way – Analytics Insight https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/big-data-is-the-future-of-metaverse-in-a-sustainable-way-analytics-insight/ Big Data is the Future of Metaverse, in a Sustainable Way Sustainability and Metaverse: How Metaverse Is Changing Big Data and How to Adapt in the Future? While the Metaverse may offer certain people a vast array of options for business expansion and development, for others, the concept is still relatively novel. Businesses should in some manner use this new development as justification for making sure best practices are being applied to their processes and doing right. Big data is the center of this new technology revolution. In the Web3 era, consumers will generate such massive amounts of data that intelligent insights won’t be far away. Big data analysis may also aid in resolving some of the major sustainability problems facing the planet. The Metaverse has the power to change how businesses operate, and with the amount of data that will be generated at an exponential rate expected to reach 160 zettabytes by 2025, businesses will have a lot more information that has to be handled along. The Metaverse market might be worth $800 billion by 2024. Importance of the Metaverse The metaverse, the subsequent technological advance, is a three-dimensional representation of the internet. Initially, text-based, the Internet and computing later shifted to image-based. Now, a virtual public place and a network will be developed so that we can live parallel digital and physical lives. Despite being perceived as a video game, it is the foundation of the global economy and the future of the digital economy. When we ponder, “What is the next great thing in climate adaptation technology?” it is because climate issues now influence everything. Metaverse and cloud computing are the solutions once more. How will the metaverse contribute to sustainability? One of the topics that are being raised more frequently in the technology industry, as well as by connectivity companies and others, is this. The metaverse is widely believed to be the upcoming big thing. The creation of the virtual metaverse has been compared by many experts to the birth of the internet itself as the next technical revolution of the century. Forecasts are genuinely optimistic. A completely new reality, one that is entirely digital, would emerge from the metaverse and grow concurrently with the physical one. Through individual avatars, residents of this virtual metaverse would communicate with one another using a variety of gadgets, including smart clothes or interfaces that were physically affixed to the body. This would entail developing new connections and ways of interpreting them, possibly developing entirely new economies, the emergence of new markets and goods, the sharing of experiences and information, and much more. The first corporation to discuss its metaverse was Meta. Meta was formerly known as Facebook. However, some powerful voices are keeping their foot on the brake. “This universe is not all that close,” asserted Raja Koduri, Senior Vice President and Group Head of Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics at Intel, “since our computing, data storage, and connectivity capacities simply aren’t yet great enough to make this vision a reality.” Naturally, there is also the issue of sustainability. Energy consumption, one of the great unknowns of the metaverse Our most recent encounter with the metaverse, if we go back in time, was Second Life, which debuted in the video gaming industry in 2003. Technology was one of many factors that contributed to the gradual decline of this “grandfather” of the virtual metaverse. Simply said, the majority of computers at the time were incapable of supporting the information processing necessary for a seamless experience. As we’ve seen, something comparable to what’s going on right now with the technology of the metaverse. This scenario might be replicated but substantially enhanced in the metaverse. Before 2030, the energy consumption of the technology sector may rise by 14%, claims ETLA Economic Research. However, these projections are taken into consideration not the energy requirements of emerging technologies or devices. The Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030, in particular addresses accessible and environmentally friendly energy, if there are any ethical questions regarding the metaverse, sustainability will be the most vocal opponent. The metaverse as a driver of sustainability The virtual metaverse shouldn’t be a barrier to sustainability, notwithstanding any potential roadblocks. It might already be spurring modifications to support it. Like any virtual world, the metaverse requires data transfer with massive bandwidths and incredibly low latencies. We need to start taking the issue of expanding data centers seriously once we take into account the significance of the cloud for virtual settings like the metaverse. And at the same time, the carbon footprints they leave behind, which, according to Lancaster University experts, might increase by up to 30% by 2030. Large technology companies are attempting to make data centers substantially more sustainable because of this. For instance, Microsoft has pledged to use only renewable energy as of 2025 for its Azure cloud platform, as well as to return more water than it uses and achieve certification for zero emissions by 2030.

Best Hodinkee Comments Of September 2022 – HODINKEE https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/best-hodinkee-comments-of-september-2022-hodinkee/ We’re back with another edition of the hottest Q&A in town, The Conversation. This week some of HODINKEE’s finest editors (just kidding, they’re all fine) answer some of the stand-out comments of the past two weeks. So buckle up and prepare to enter whatever you call an extremely polite version of the Thunderdome.  Cartier Says ‘Screw This’ The comment: “Wanted to ask the experts a question about the screws on the bracelet and face of the watch. What is the experience with these? Any report of them coming loose and falling out? Are any of them functional?” – unce_turbo_997 The response: The screws on the bezel are completely functional. Besides keeping the bezel in place, they put pressure on the crystal and gasket below, adding to the water-resistance of the Santos. The bracelet screws are purely ornamental and, in my humble opinion, the perfect touch on the two-tone models. I have seen a watch lose a bezel screw, but it wasn’t a Santos. Cartier uses blue 243 Loctite to keep both sets of screws in place, so those suckers aren’t going anywhere. –Mark Hackman  The comment: “Great article, James. How does the Bracelet wear compared to other metal bracelets? It begs the question about which four watches would you put on the Mt. Rushmore of Polar Watches. I’d start with the Explorer II 216570 as the George Washington of Polars – it is the most distinctive of the Explorers with the orange accent over white. It’s also on the Mt Rushmore of legibility.” – wildblue94 The response: While I can’t speak to the B&R’s bracelet, as I have yet to be hands-on with the watch (this was just an introduction), I do enjoy the idea of a Mt. Rushmore of polar (white-dialed) watches. My lineup would likely include the 16570 Explorer II (which I’m fortunate to own), plus the Speedmaster Alaska Project, the first-gen Patek Philippe 5270g with the silver/white opaline dial and black accents, and the short-lived Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 25554BA with a white dial. Talk about a four-watch collection… only three to go. –James Stacey  The comment: “I was really pleased that AP produced a watch without exposed screws… until I saw the obverse. They just can’t resist steampunk. The AP craftsmanship shows through (yes, intentional pun) and as usual, detail, detail and detail. I again, raise my weariness with skeleton dials. As one of long tooth and poor eyes, these designs, while showing off the workings, make the hands and functions indecipherable. I thought that was why open casebooks were so popular.” –OldCossack The response: There’s a time and a place for refined elegance, but not every watch is meant to be a traditional three-handed dress watch. You can buy a Calatrava for that. A Royal Oak was also meant to be sport watch, and the Code 11.59 is a bit of a hybrid. I think one disservice AP did in the original Code 11.59 launch was including the time-and-date with the other more complicated watches – if they’d focused solely on the chronograph, tourbillon, and chiming models, it would have indicated a collection focused on haute horlogerie and complicated watchmaking rather than the confusing mixed bag that the collection started its life as. That said, if we consider the Code 11.59 to be a platform for AP’s most progressive designs and complications, then I welcome all the bright-blue bridges and flying tourbillons we can get. –Logan Baker  It’s Time To Put Some Respect On The Laureato’s Name The comment: “I try to understand why Laureato failed while the Nautilus and the RO are a great success. Is it in the name? Girard Perregaux is no more awkward as a name than Patek Phillipe or Audemar Piguet. Perhaps Laureato is not as good a name as Nautilus or Royal Oak. Why call your watch a student? Who wants a student watch? It is far more inspiring to be associated with something majestic like the ocean. Being sold to Kering didn’t help either. These people have no appreciation of horology. The moment GP and UN underperformed, they dumped them. The green dial Laureato is a great watch. I hope it will be fully appreciated one day.” – yesman The response: Ultimately this comes down to brand recognition. Audemars Piguet and Patek Phillipe are both brands with mass market appeal, while Girard-Perregaux exists, for the most part, in the watch enthusiast space. My friend and founder of RollieFest, Geoff Hess, recently explained to me that certain criteria must be checked in order for a watch to endure a lasting legacy: It must be widely known and instantly recognizable by a critical mass of collectors, there must be a memorable and easy to understand story which compliments the design, and the watch must be copied by other brands. I think what the Laureato misses here is a widely known story and design. I also firmly believe that watch brands who run independently of a holding group have more power and control over the story they want to tell. It can also feel more authentic if the story is coming straight from the source. I very much enjoy your Laureato hypothesis. Some even speculate that the watch was named after the 1967 film starring Dustin Hoffman. And I agree that the green dial Laureato is a sleeper hit. Hopefully, we can help to spread the word! –Malaika Crawford.  To Customize Or Not To Customize The story: In a Second Opinions essay, Nick Marino argues that custom watches are awesome and should no longer be taboo. The story is a precursor to his Talking Watches episode with Cooper Zelnick, whose company Cloister Watch Co. lovingly modifies vintage pieces. The comment: “I just read your editorial today and I might be late to the party (over 100 comments), but I would like to make some comments that I think you seriously missed in this piece.  First, and most importantly, a watch is not a pair of jeans or an Apple gadget (one could argue that Apple does not allow customizations either with their software but that is for another conversation), there is a reasoning, a tradition, a history that comes with a watch. Things are made this way because they have always been made this way. There are no rational explanations in the 21st century as to why things should remain the same, but these values and methods are deeply anchored into the European psyche. From the color of an umbrella, to the recipe of a macaron, or the numerals on a dial, tradition and history have a huge and heavy influence on why these products (and the companies that make them) have survived for centuries. I do realize, having lived for thirty years in the United States, a country where where individuality and consumption are king, that it is difficult to accept that a watch was not made for you specifically, but was, instead made to outlast you. The design of a timepiece is not up to the individual imagination of the consumer. It is, instead, the product of a long tradition belonging to watchmaking.  Authenticity is another important reason why watchmakers will not allow personalization. If, instead, everyone was modifying everything to their liking, it would become nearly impossible to verify that a product was indeed produced by the original maker. Any auction house expert will tell you how frustrating it is to establish that a unique watch truly originated from the manufacture and was not instead modified along the way by its purchaser. Allowing personalization would make it much easier for counterfeit goods to pass as authentic. If anything goes for a Royal Oak, then what is a Royal Oak?  Watchmaking has nothing to do with fashion and have never been part of that dialogue. Watches are, instead, scientific objects, tools, art and a heritage that we try to preserve.” – WilliamMassena The response: To begin, I should say that it’s wonderful to have an eminent watchmaker like William Massena engaging with our stories. Even though we disagree, William, I appreciate you weighing in. Another commenter, 8ball, capably addressed your thoughts on tradition and authenticity, so I’ll focus on your last point – the assertion that watchmaking has nothing to do with fashion. With all due respect (and trust me, the respect is very real), I’m afraid the evidence is stacked against you here. Watches are, in fact, inextricably tied to fashion – and have been for ages, perhaps even since their invention. They are, at a basic level, beautiful objects worn on the body as functional adornment. They come in and out of style, just like clothes. They are produced by fashion houses from Chanel to Gucci. Watchmakers themselves have long promoted their own fashionability. Check out these vintage advertisements, courtesy of Nick Federowicz, aka the archival Instagrammer @adpatina. The folks at Omega wouldn’t have picked Cindy Crawford as a brand ambassador in 1995 if they weren’t interested in fashion. Rolex wouldn’t have aligned with Gernreich if it didn’t care about style. The AP advertisement sums the whole thing up: Watches perform “the art of self expression.” If that ain’t a succinct definition for the role of fashion in our culture, I’m not sure what is. Nevertheless, I appreciate all the conversation around my essay and subsequent video. Starting a conversation was the whole point – and continuing it is the point of this follow-up post. I totally understand why purists can’t stomach the idea of altering a factory original watch. But that shouldn’t stop the rest of us.  This hobby is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be about, as Audemars Piguet might say, the art of self expression. Nobody ought to dictate what you can and can’t do with your watch (or your clothes, for that matter). Taste is personal. Wear what you like – even if that means you have to design it yourself. –Nick Marino The HODINKEE Shop has a variety of pre-owned and vintage models from the brands mentioned here. Terra (LUNA) Collapse Big Step Backward For Crypto Decentralization: Ethereum (ETH) Creator Vitalik Buterin – The Daily Hodl https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/terra-luna-collapse-big-step-backward-for-crypto-decentralization-ethereum-eth-creator-vitalik-buterin-the-daily-hodl/ The co-founder of Ethereum (ETH) says the implosion of stablecoin issuer Terra (LUNA) earlier this year dealt a big blow to the decentralization of crypto. In an interview with The New York Times, Vitalik Buterin says decentralization in the crypto space has been progressing in the right direction since the epic collapse of defunct digital asset exchange Mt. Gox in 2014. According to Buterin, hacks involving centralized intermediaries spurred people to move toward a decentralized model when buying and selling crypto, which he notes was going well until the meltdown of Terra in May. “And so you don’t need centralized intermediaries to hold things on the cryptocurrency side. And I think that actually has improved things. The times when it hasn’t improved things, probably the biggest one was the Terra LUNA collapse of a few months ago, which was interesting because I think there was a combination of two causes. One of them was that the mechanism behind Terra LUNA was just fundamentally bad economics.” The Ethereum creator says that while Terra’s blockchain is decentralized, the team behind it had too much control behind the scenes. Buterin points at Terra’s efforts to accumulate Bitcoin to support its algorithmic stablecoin UST. “And nobody knows what the LUNA Terra team were doing with Bitcoin or the asset. And they made a lot of promises. And look, they really tried hard at making these kind of very centralized efforts to manipulate the market and prop up their coin. But it ended up eventually failing, right? So I think that story is instructive, because it shows like to some extent, decentralization by itself doesn’t solve every problem.”  Regardless of what the Terra team did in the shadows, Buterin highlights that blockchain’s transparent nature allowed some people to predict the crypto asset’s demise. “Because if the algorithm is bad, then even a fully open and transparent implementation of a bad algorithm is going to break. But at the same time, it does still show the difference between the decentralized and trustless part of the ecosystem, where lots of people were able to see ahead of time what was going on. And lots of people were able to warn about what could happen.”  You can read the full interview here. US And Israel Launch High-Level Tech Talks, Washington Concerned About Chinese Influence – The Epoch Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/us-and-israel-launch-high-level-tech-talks-washington-concerned-about-chinese-influence-the-epoch-times/ The United States and Israel engaged in their first meeting of “U.S.-Israel Strategic High-Level Dialogue on Technology” initiative on Sept. 28 aimed at establishing a partnership on emerging and critical technologies between the nations. The countries agreed to support research and implementation of a “trustworthy AI in healthcare,” including “fair AI-driven health systems” as well as boosting the ability of health researchers to test the impacts of medicines and treatments, according to a Sept. 30 White House Fact Sheet. They will also explore ways to use AI to develop new crop varieties, including seeds that have a “stronger tolerance to climate change.” Next month, Israel and the United States plan on signing a Memorandum of Understanding seeking to strengthen cooperation in biomedical research like molecular and genomic medicine. They will work together on global health security and pandemic preparedness. Climate change technology initiatives will include support for renewable hydrogen and solar energy, extreme weather prediction and disaster risk reduction initiatives, and cooperation on battery supply chains. “The joint research with the US has been only 19 percent of Israel’s research with other countries, as opposed to 56 percent for Europe,” said Farkash-Hakohen, Israel’s minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, according to a Sept. 29 press release by Israel’s foreign ministry. “Good partners and allies, like Israel and the US, need and can take significant steps to increase the scope of the joint research that constitutes the basis for high-tech and that is what we are currently doing.” The Dialogue was agreed upon by President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid in July. The Sept. 28 meeting was held in Washington between U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Israeli national security advisor Dr. Eyal Hulata. The next meeting will be held in Israel in 2023. Countering Chinese Influence The push to deepen tech cooperation between Israel and the United States comes amid concerns about rising Chinese influence in the Middle Eastern nation’s technologies. During the Trump administration, Washington pressured Israel to set up a review process aimed at allowing government officials to block deals in the case of national security concerns. While Israel did set up the review process in 2019, the tech industry was left out of it. During the Sept. 28 meeting, the United States and Israel agreed on a plan to manage risks to their technology ecosystems, including investment screening. A 2020 study by global policy think tank RAND Corporation found that the security risks of Chinese investments and construction could affect the relationship between the United States and Israel. It pointed out that the interests of China and Israel in the Middle East are incompatible and warned that Chinese Communist Party investments and construction projects in Israel could result in cyber espionage as well as the leaking of sensitive technology. In an interview with Bloomberg, Ehud Levy, a general partner at Canaan Partners Israel and also a partner at China’s Lenovo Capital, said that even though Washington has not succeeded in getting Israeli startups to fully adopt its policy agenda, the United States has succeeded in convincing several entrepreneurs to pick sides. “If you have a term sheet from a Chinese investor and you have a term sheet from a US investor, the CEO is going for the safe option,” Levy said. “It’s not like a governmental guidance or anything like that. It’s purely a commercial decision.” Follow Naveen Athrappully is a news reporter covering business and world events at The Epoch Times.

This is the view of Monash University academic, Professor Paresh Narayan, who says developing countries like Fiji are lagging behind in adopting technology that can increase their resilience to climate change in the agriculture sector. The Australia-based Monash University Academic was part of the recent ‘Climate Change, SME sector and food insecurities in Fiji’ stakeholder workshop. Nor’easter Spawned By Ian Remnants To Bring High Winds, Coastal Flooding To The Outer Banks – The Virginian-Pilot https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/noreaster-spawned-by-ian-remnants-to-bring-high-winds-coastal-flooding-to-the-outer-banks-the-virginian-pilot/ The remnants of Hurricane Ian will meet up with a low pressure system early this week, bringing high winds, flooding and hazardous marine conditions to the Outer Banks. The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning, a sound-side coastal flood advisory, a wind advisory and a high surf advisory for the Outer Banks Monday through Wednesday, with gale warnings up off the coast. The weather service says low pressure will interact with what’s left of Ian, spawning a new area of deepening low pressure offshore. The nor’easter will bring sustained north winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, forecasters say. A wind advisory is in effect for the entire Outer Banks from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday. The coastal flood warning, in effect from noon Monday through 7 p.m. Wednesday, calls for oceanside inundation 2 to 4 feet of above ground. “Vulnerable oceanfront areas are most at risk and residents and visitors in those areas should be ready to take action to protect property,” Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said in a news release. Ocean overwash flooding is most likely around high tides Monday, and anyone traveling N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island should expect travel impacts. Residents and visitors in Rodanthe, where three vacation homes have fallen in the ocean this year, should expect “significant additional flooding,” Pearson said. The sound-side coastal flood advisory is in effect from noon Monday to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with 1 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level possible in very low lying areas and roads adjacent to the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, the weather service said. Dangerous high surf is also expected, with large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet expected in the surf zone from Duck to Cape Hatteras. The Outer Banks experienced high winds and 4 to 6 inches of rain Friday as Hurricane Ian moved through, but escaped serious damage and flooding. Kari Pugh, kari.pugh@virginiamedia.com

Voter Apathy In Bulgaria Opens Door For Pro-Russia Groups – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/voter-apathy-in-bulgaria-opens-door-for-pro-russia-groups-69news-wfmz-tv/ SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — An exit poll in Bulgaria suggested Sunday that the center-right GERB party of ex-premier Boyko Borissov, a party blamed for presiding over years of corruption, is the likely winner of Bulgaria’s parliamentary election. The exit poll conducted by the Gallup International pollster showed the GERB party earning 24.6% support, apparently edging out the reformist We Continue the Change pro-Western party of former Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, which is expected to capture 18.9%. It could take days before the final official results are announced. If they confirm the exit poll, Borisov will be handed a mandate to form his fourth cabinet. It will be an uphill task for him to produce a stable governing coalition, however, since most political groups have in advance rejected any cooperation with his GERB party. The early election came after a fragile coalition led Petkov lost a no-confidence vote in June. He claimed afterward that Moscow had used “hybrid war” tactics to bring his government down after it refused to pay gas bills in rubles and ordered an expulsion of Russian diplomats from Bulgaria. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Voter apathy dominated Bulgaria’s early election on Sunday, raising the prospect of yet another fractured parliament that will struggle to form a viable governing coalition. The European Union nation’s fourth election in 18 months was marked by a raging war nearby, political instability and economic hardships in the bloc’s poorest member. Some 6.6 million people were eligible to cast ballots for 240 lawmakers in the parliament. Voter turnout was nearly 30% by 5 p.m., less than in previous elections. Analysts attributed that to voter fatigue and disillusionment with politicians unable to cobble together a viable government coalition. Surveys before the vote suggest that up to eight parties could muster the 4% threshold to enter a fragmented parliament where populist and pro-Russia groups could increase their representation. This early election comes after a fragile coalition led by pro-Western Prime Minister Kiril Petkov lost a no-confidence vote in June. He claimed afterward that Moscow had used “hybrid war” tactics to bring his government down after it refused to pay gas bills in rubles and ordered an expulsion of Russian diplomats from Bulgaria. A low turnout favors three-time former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov’s GERB party, which is likeliest to finish first because it can still count on a loyal base. After casting his vote on Sunday, Borissov told reporters that Bulgaria needs to clearly position itself on Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. “With this, aggression, with this war with a clear aggressor in the face of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin – (I have) nothing against the Russian people — with this farce with the referendums, Bulgaria must be very clear, categorical, and precise about its place in the European Union and NATO,” he said, adding that Bulgaria’s entry into Europe’s 19-nation shared currency eurozone should be its first, most important task. Still, the predicted percentage won’t be enough for Borissov’s party to form a one-party government, and the chances for a GERB-led coalition are slim as it is blamed for presiding over years of corruption by most opponents. Petkov rejected recent polls as questionable and voiced confidence that the vote will yield positive results for his party. “Today’s election is very important. The choice is between going back to the years of transition or to break with this period once and for all and heading to a new prosperous and reformed Bulgaria,” he said after casting his ballot. Petkov ran on promises to cobble together a coalition and continue with his efforts to eradicate corruption but painful reforms may be hard to swallow amid a European energy crisis sparked by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Many Bulgarians share pro-Russia sentiments, which provides fertile soil for aggressive Kremlin propaganda in the Balkan country. The pro-Russia party Vazrazhdane, riding on those feelings, is attracting many voters. The latest opinion polls predict it will capture 12.8% of the vote, up from 4.9% in the previous election. “After these elections Bulgaria will have two options for the future — it will either radically change its path of development and will have a chance for survival, or ‘God save Bulgaria,’” party leader Kostadin Kostadinov said Sunday. Unlike the stance taken by the EU, Kostadinov has urged “full neutrality” for Bulgaria in the war in Ukraine. First exit poll results will be announced after polls close at 8 p.m. and preliminary results are expected on Monday. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Haaland made Premier League history as the first player to score a hat-trick in three consecutive home games, following his heroics against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. This one will live longer in the memory, while boyhood City fan Foden also completed his claim to the matchball after Antony’s fine strike briefly eased the pain of United’s 4-0 halftime deficit. Substitute Anthony Martial restored a measure of pride with a late brace, his second coming from the penalty spot, but it remained a local affair where this Haaland-embossed version of City were able to move one point behind leaders Arsenal and strike fear across the Premier League and beyond. MORE: Manchester United and another derby mess: Erik ten Hag must fix three problems after defeat to Manchester City The 22-year-old now has a scandalous haul of 17 goals in 11 City games but he was peripheral in the early penalty-box action, with Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva having early goalbound efforts blocked before the latter delivered a pinpoint eighth-minute cross for the unmarked Foden to gleefully convert. United carried a threat on the break but were careless in possession and flimsy in defence — a dire combination when a player of De Bruyne’s pedigree can pick out Haaland to head home a 34th-minute corner before producing a trademark curling delivery for the striker to steal in behind Raphael Varane for a sliding finish. Another goal for Erling Haaland! pic.twitter.com/ThC0720bsD — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) October 2, 2022 City’s fourth brought the Etihad Stadium to the brink of bedlam a minute before halftime, with De Bruyne scything through midfield and finding Haaland pulling out to the left flank. His first-time reverse cross found Foden, who capped a wonderful move. United’s first goal also came in stylish fashion as Antony followed up his debut strike against Arsenal by curling beyond Ederson from 25 yards. It merely served to shake City out of their early second-half slumber, with Haaland fizzing Sergio Gomez’s drilled cross past the helpless David de Gea before laying on Foden for a similarly emphatic treble-sealing goal. Guardiola’s perfectionist side will bridle at how Martial was able to convert a rebound after Ederson saved from fellow substitute Fred, before drawing a clumsy foul from Joao Cancelo and converting from 12 yards. Nevertheless, it was a day for uninhibited celebration on the blue side of Manchester. MORE: Most Premier League hat tricks season record: Erling Haaland within sight of Shearer’s mark Hyperspace Haaland marks his turf in Manchester As his father Alf-Inge Haaland applauded in the stands, enjoying his son’s hat-trick, it should have been easy to grasp for a cinematic narrative. Haaland Sr never completed another top-flight game after being on the end of Roy Keane’s X-rated challenge during a Manchester derby that finished 1-1 at Old Trafford in April 2001. On Sunday, his old nemesis was left to work through his now-familiar frothing indignation act regarding the latest United humiliation. But such concerns feel like a parochial footnote given where it looks like Haaland is heading and how he is redefining perceptions of what goalscoring feats might be possible in England’s top flight. He has 14 already this season, double the amount of Harry Kane, who is next in the top-scorers charts. Haaland is also the fastest player to three Premier League hat-tricks, having chalked up his treble of trebles in eight games. He unseats Michael Owen, who did it in his 48th appearance. He became the first City player to score a derby hat-trick since Francis Lee in 1970 for good measure. It feels like most of his records might end up with ample daylight behind them. — Sporting News Football Club (@sn_footballclub) October 2, 2022 Away-day blues send Ten Hag’s Reds back to the drawing board There was an unlikely piece of symmetry when Erik ten Hag brought on Luke Shaw with Manchester United 4-0 down at halftime. It was the England left-back’s first Premier League outing since he was substituted at the interval at Brentford, when Manchester United were 4-0 down. They have made strides forward since that chastening experience in west London, but their derby-day humiliation marked the seventh time they have conceded four or more away from home in a Premier League game over the past 12 months. One of those came in a 4-1 defeat to City in March. Ralf Rangnick’s United actually played well in the first half then before downing tools. Players belatedly picking up tools at 6-1 when their hosts have clocked off in celebratory mood is certainly different if not better. City are a few levels above their neighbours right now and games like this will not be used as the main barometer for Ten Hag just yet. However, the disjointed attacking efforts with and without the ball before halftime, a flimsy and overrun central midfield and a defence reduced to Sunday League shambles on Foden’s hat-trick goal are all things that will need to be fixed irrespective of the opposition. Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says his side ‘lacked belief’ during their 6-3 defeat to Man City pic.twitter.com/hzflToeBIv — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) October 2, 2022 Foden should shift the Alexander-Arnold-Southgate discourse Polarised and entrenched discussions about the England national team before major tournaments are a dubious part of the enjoyment. After Euro 2020’s multi-part series of “Pleeeeaaaase pick Jack Grealish”, we now have “How do you solve a problem like Trent Alexander-Arnold?”. “He can’t defend!” “He can defend!” “It doesn’t matter about his defending, he’s amazing!” And so on, and so on. The thing is, Gareth Southgate not knowing how best to use the Liverpool full-back and/or not being so inclined to find out does not feel like so much of a problem when Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker — injured in this derby — are around. Not having the best plan for Foden might just be a bigger issue. The Three Lions are blessed with a clutch of excellent creative attacking midfielders but Foden, with his sublime technique, capacity to thrive in tight spaces, destructive range of passing and — as he showed against United — eye for goal stands apart. To use the very vogue phrase, he is a generational talent. If England see more of this Foden, Qatar 2022 could be a lot of fun. The fact they haven’t since his two-goal home debut against Iceland in 2020 should be causing Southgate plenty of head-scratching. 50 – Phil Foden has scored his 50th goal for Manchester City in all competitions. Aged 22 years and 127 days, he is now the youngest player to reach 50 goals under Pep Guardiola, surpassing Lionel Messi (22y 164d). City with Haaland in tow are absolutely terrifying at times. United will probably take a little comfort that this didn’t end up getting much worse, weird as that sounds. Thanks for being with us today. 90th minute+1: GOOAALLL!!!! Martial (pen)!!! Beautifully done, side-footed into the top corner. United do deserve some credit for keeping going. They also deserve pelters for going 4-0 and 6-1 down, so there is that. 90th minute: Penalty to United. Clumsy challenge from Cancelo on Martial, who has grabbed the ball. 89th minute: This has started to feel like a training match, specifically one involving the Brazil national team. Casemiro sends a stinging strike towards goal that Ederson pushes clear. 86th minute: Antony tries his luck again but this one is regulation for Ederson. 85th minute: Palmer looks for Alvarez in the area as City get back on the front foot. Martinez is able to smuggle behind. 84th minute: GOOOAAAALLL!!!! Martial!!!! Martial adds to him impressive personal history in this fixture, beating Ederson from close range after the City goalkeeper parried Fred’s strike. City switched off entirely there. 80th minute: To the surprise of absolutely no one, Bruno Fernandes is in a mood and has been booked for dissent. Martinez then takes a hack at Haaland. There could be further silliness to come from a badly bruised United. Erling Haaland and Phil Foden become the first two Man City players to score a Premier League hat-trick against Man United. Recently, he said the metaverse is a “massive opportunity” for several reasons, and he feels strongly that developing metaverse platforms will “unlock hundreds of billions of dollars.” Last year, Grimes  launched a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) called the “WarNympth Collection.” The 10 NFTs brought in over $5.8 million, selling out just in under 20 minutes. At 8:23 a.m. ET, the exchange said the issue with transactions “has been identified and a fix is being implemented.” Customers can still use debit cards or PayPal to buy crypto during the downtime, according to the statement. Mitre Expands R&D In Hawaii As US Focus On Indo-Pacific Intensifies – C4ISRNet https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/mitre-expands-rd-in-hawaii-as-us-focus-on-indo-pacific-intensifies-c4isrnet/ By C4ISRNET staff  Oct 2, 05:01 PM The fast-attack submarine Cheyenne departs Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for an Indo-Pacific deployment in 2020. (MC1 Michael Zingaro/Navy) WASHINGTON — Mitre, which operates federally funded centers that assist the U.S. government with science research, development and systems engineering, said it will open a facility in in Hawaii to bolster security and national defense operations in the Indo-Pacific. This site in Honolulu will support Hawaii and Indo-Pacific priorities of the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, the intelligence community and international allies, while fostering “whole-of-nation” technology collaborations in cybersecurity, transportation, healthcare, veterans services and law enforcement, the not-for-profit said. The U.S. sees the Pacific as a key strategic region, as Washington works to counter China’s growing influence. The White House Indo-Pacific Strategy, published in February, pledges an extended role in the area, including establishing more resilient command and control and increasing the scope of joint exercises and operations. “We’re immersed in nearly every aspect of global strategic competition—from countering aggressive military actions by adversary nations, to safeguarding supply chains, accelerating maritime research and innovation, and preparing for the next global health crisis,” said Keoki Jackson, senior vice president, general manager, Mitre National Security, in a statement. Mitre, which works across six federal R&D centers and more than 200 individual labs, also said it entered into a partnership with UH to identify opportunities for collaborative analysis, engineering and research. The partnership will focus on advancing marine technology, enhancing cyber defense, strengthening climate resilience, addressing natural resource management and testing energy technologies. The organization has been operating at Ford Island and Camp Smith in Hawaii for almost 50 years. Developing the site at the Kaka’ako Innovation District will double its local workforce, advance STEM education and and bolster security in the region, it said. Last month, Mitre named Cedric Sims to the new role of senior vice president, enterprise innovation and integration and Austin Y. Wang as vice president, intelligence center, Mitre National Security. These leaders deliver diversity of thought, robust technical expertise, business acumen, and a commitment to public service. Sims will develop strategies to foster enterprise-wide innovation, drive cross-cutting integration solutions to benefit our government sponsors, and oversee corporate strategy, Mitre said. He joined the organization from Booz Allen Hamilton, where he served as senior vice president leading the justice, homeland security, and transportation business and has more than 25 years of experience in acquisition, risk management, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence/machine learning, program governance, and systems engineering. Sims also served in leadership roles at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Secret Service. Wang will drive whole-of-nation, joint, and multi-agency solutions through integration across the intelligence community and Mitre’s national security enterprise. He worked for more than two decades at the CIA, most recently as a senior executive and clandestine technical operations lead, and served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps working signals intelligence and ground electronic warfare.

Between them, the screens display the status of all 712 beds at the NHS trust, including how many are empty (56) and the number occupied by Covid patients (four). Two years ago these vital statistics would have been collected manually using pencils, rubbers and whiteboards. Now, the hospital leads the NHS in using technology to solve the health service’s fundamental challenge of how to provide care when there are not enough beds. Staff at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, which runs two hospitals in Kent, have a laser-like focus on minimising the amount of time patients spend in hospital to free up

When Do You Plan To Retire And What Do You Want To Do Then? Oswego County Business Magazine
When Do You Plan To Retire And What Do You Want To Do Then? Oswego County Business Magazine
‘When Do You Plan To Retire And What Do You Want To Do Then?’ – Oswego County Business Magazine https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/when-do-you-plan-to-retire-and-what-do-you-want-to-do-then-oswego-county-business-magazine/ Interviews by Deborah Jeanne Sergeant “I don’t think I’m going to retire as soon as I’d hoped. After I retire, I’m hoping to travel. And of course, I want to spend more time with my grandchildren. I’m going to have to work a few more years than I had thought because I can’t find enough people to work since the pandemic happened. I have people calling wanting cleaning all the time, but I can’t have my staff work any more hours and I can’t find people to hire.” Janet Yuckel Owner, Done Right Cleaning, West Monroe. “I’m probably not going to retire for a while. I’ll probably travel when I do.” Jennifer Wakefield Baker, Cakes Galore & More, Oswego. “I love what I do and I feel like it matters. What could be more fun? I like to help people. I’m in the best job in the world where it doesn’t really matter what my age is to do it. I have a lot of experience so there’s no reason for me to give up what I love to retire. When you’re happy with what you do, why would you change it? It’s good for you to be active and out and talking with folks. I have been in the real estate business since the 1980s, and most of my business — 95% of it, in fact — is referrals from people who were pleased with my work and want to give that same real estate experience to their friends, family, coworkers and neighbors.” Judy M. Winslow Real estate broker, Hunt Real Estate ERA, Manlius. “I have no retirement plans. I so enjoy what I do that I can’t see any reason to stop. That may change or slow down, I imagine. However, life is good! I’d like to travel a bit more and if I had the time, I’d only open a bakery anyway. Too many passions!” Tony Pauldine Owner of Anthony M. Pauldine General Contractors Inc. and several other businesses in Oswego. “My retirement plan is to, over the next few years, bring a junior accountant on that would like to take over the business. I would love to retire in about seven years. My goal is then to work part-time for the person that takes over my business for a few years to assist them, then retire completely and enjoy whatever I decide to do. My passions would be to help in children and animal centers as a volunteer.” Brenda Weissenberg Owner and accountant, Affordable Business Solutions, West Monroe. “I’d like to work until I’m 70. After that, I’ll be a snowbird and do some golfing. Maybe I’ll live on the West Coast of Florida.” Charles Handley, Owner, Burke’s Home Center, Oswego and Fulton “I am semi-retired. I don’t plan to quit. I am doing more things I like. I go to Florida for the winter and come up here in the summer. We have a place in the Adirondacks. I’m involved in Rotary. I’ve been getting to know the area in Florida and getting to know some new people. I like to kayak and go out on nice long walks.” Sadieann Z. Spear Owner, A Strong And Healthy You, New Hartford. “Retirement is an interesting question when you’re in the real estate field. I believe I will ease into retirement in the next five years. I believe I will always be involved in the real estate business but will take a step back. I plan on enjoying golfing and warm weather when I retire.” William R. Galloway Broker/owner, Century 21 Galloway Realty, Oswego “I’m semi-retired and don’t plan on totally retiring. I like working part-time and depending on the season, enjoying lakes in the summer, walks in the fall and spring and in the winter, walking and watching the snow fall.” Donna Glassberg Owner, Orange Housing, Syracuse. “I’ve been thinking about it. My generation is different. We don’t see 65 or 67 as being the time to retire. I work a full-time job and am an entrepreneur. I want to retire at 55. That is 10 years away for me. I have a plan in place I’m working on. I’m hoping to get my money to work for me and start the LEKIA Foundation, which stands for ‘Loving Every Kid in America.’ I want to use my own means and funds and not rely on others for the foundation. Now I consult for other companies, but I want to retire to build my foundation and helps moms and underserved youth. I had a very young mother and was raised by grandparents. If it weren’t for them stepping up and raising me, who knows what my life would be like now? I’m not sure how I’ll do that, in what way I’ll help youth, but that is my passion.” Lekia K. Hill Owner, Powerful Voices App, Syracuse. “I just started a new business and I’m thinking not until my late 60s or early 70s because it’s something I can do anywhere. I teach clients how to get self-care, self-love and self-compassion into their lives. I think I may want to incorporate more writing about self-care and my experiences as I go into retirement.” Renee L. Hagar-Smith Owner, Mindfulness-Based Wellness Coaching, Fayetteville. “I’m nowhere near retirement. I’m not a person who will sit around. I have no retirement plans, so I’ll work until I die. Or I’d have to marry well, but I’d rather be single.” Julie Avery Owner, Beacon Hotel, Oswego “I would like to retire tomorrow, but it isn’t possible. I’m 72 and have 13 years to go on my mortgage. That doesn’t make it possible. I work full-time and run a business at home. The full-time job keeps me in benefits, which are important because I get vacation, sick and personal time. I recently got on Medicare, which is cutting my medical expenses. I don’t know about retiring from my bridal and gift business. I might like to move south, where the climate is more aging-friendly. But I don’t know that I can take the business with me. I’d have to have an enormous inventory sell-off. I don’t want to pack over 200 gowns to move. I’d want that to be part of the retirement if I could. I might like to live by the beach, take a hot-air balloon ride and visit a lot of places. I’d like to go to Charleston, and do more trips to the Caribbean Islands, like Jamaica and Barbados. I have a sister in Florida that I’d like to spend a month with. I’d like to spend more time in my garden. I’d like to spend more time with my husband traveling, given the resources to do it.” Linda Ruckdeschel Owner, The Bridal Connection, and L’Emporeia, Syracuse. “I hope to retire in 10 years and I would like to transition to becoming a restaurant consultant. I feel like when people start businesses like this who don’t have a lot of experience, they make a lot of missteps. ‘If only they know about this or that,’ I think to myself. As a consultant, I think I could help them avoid mistakes. I think that might be a good move.” Bill Wadsworth Partner Bistro 197, Oswego “I am only 38, so I have a while until I retire, but my plan is to maybe live in the area and do some traveling.” Jonathan Shaver Senior staff engineer at Nine Mile Point, Scriba

The camper is heart-warming and uniquely American.” As a third-generation owner, Eveland’s Inc./Scamp Trailers CEO Micah Eveland was on hand to receive the award, as was his father, second-generation owner Kent Eveland. “We are truly honored to receive this award,” Micah Eveland said in a news release. “Over the past 52 years it is exciting to see how the county and community have been continually growing and we are proud to be a part of it!” The Cass County Economic Development Corp. Board of Directors created specific criteria for the award before pinpointing eligible companies in the county. Criteria include: primary or original location in Cass County and currently doing business in the county, must have employees, must be established for a minimum of 30 years, and must be a supporting member of the CCEDC. The CCEDC board believes the Legacy Business Award honors a critical piece of a growing economy, “Eveland’s Inc./Scamp Trailers deserves the Legacy Business Award because of its sustained contributions to the people of Cass County,” said Charles Black Lance, CCEDC board president. “Our board wants to honor those companies that have the proven historical, yet ongoing, economic impact on Cass County.” The CCEDC Legacy Business Award is given annually. Past recipients include Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters, Pine River State Bank, and First National Bank. Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story. Hi, I’m the Brainerd Dispatch. I started working a few days before Christmas in 1881 and became a daily paper two years later. You May Need A Sober October More Than You Think. Experts Explain How To Do It Right – CNN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/you-may-need-a-sober-october-more-than-you-think-experts-explain-how-to-do-it-right-cnn/ CNN  —  Sober October, Dry January and Dry July: For one quarter of a year, these campaigns provide a motivation for people to come together and challenge themselves to go without alcohol. It isn’t a surprise to Annie Grace that these periods to reduce alcohol consumption are becoming more popular. The author of “This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol” said she is seeing more and more people evaluate the relationship that alcohol plays in their lives. How much is too much? The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention classifies moderate drinking as two drinks or less in a day for men and one drink or less for women. But two-thirds of adult drinkers report drinking more than those levels at least once a month, according to the CDC. And the pandemic didn’t help. A December 2020 study found that 60% of respondents increased drinking over the year and more than a third said they engaged in binge drinking, which is defined as five or more drinks on an occasion for men and four for women. Studies show that alcohol isn’t good for healthy living. There is no safe amount when it comes to heart health, according to the World Heart Federation. And even moderate drinking reserved for the weekend can have social, emotional and psychological impacts, according to a 2022 study. Sober October could be a step to cutting out alcohol entirely, but it doesn’t have to be, said biological psychologist Aaron White, senior scientific adviser to the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Whatever your level of drinking, a monthlong sobriety challenge could help you be more mindful about your drinking, White added. You may think you might not need a break from drinking because you don’t have signs of substance abuse disorder: your drinking causing serious impairment, health problems, disability or issues meeting responsibilities. But problematic drinking is a spectrum – not just a binary between addicted and fine, Grace said. You may drink a little but not feel good about why or how you drink. You may drink a lot but feel doing so functions well in your life. Even people who don’t drink heavily may find themselves with less control over when and how much they drink than they would like, Grace said. She was one of those people. Grace didn’t feel she needed treatment programs, but she found that reducing her drinking was a struggle, which to her was a sign that something needed to change. Taking on a sobriety challenge doesn’t mean you have to quit forever, but it can help you be more thoughtful in your decisions around drinking rather than doing it because it’s what you usually do, White said. “It gives somebody a chance to cultivate alternatives,” he added. Even in just a month, there is evidence that reduced alcohol consumption can be good for your physical health. “Most people who drink excessively have fatty livers,” White said. “Even taking a break for a month is enough to just bring your liver enzymes down and for your liver to look healthier.” Some people may find with less or no alcohol they sleep better and make better food choices for themselves, White said. And for emotional health, a short-term challenge can point out feelings and routines that could be improved, Grace added. Many of the people she works with – even moderate drinkers – describe their relationship with alcohol as something they are not in full control of, she said. She encourages people who are using a sobriety challenge to take note of when they feel the urge to drink and what purpose it serves. Does it make you feel part of a community to share a drink at a party? Is that glass of wine after a long day a reliable sense of comfort? Maybe the drink is an easy way – but not the best – to get those needs met, Grace said. Taking note and trying to find those things without a drink could open you up to new ways of fulfilling those feelings, White added. There are a couple of stumbling blocks to plan for during a sober month, Grace said. One is overcoming the desire to drink, and experts had different approaches to solve that problem. Reducing drinking can have a similar effect as dieting – the more you tell yourself you can’t have it, the more you want it, said Natalie Mokari, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Charlotte, North Carolina. She recommends starting with one less drink than you would usually have at each occasion or breaking a daily habit by limiting drinking to certain days. You can also have a sparkling water in between drinks or make weaker cocktails than usual to reduce your alcohol consumption, she said. White said it is important not to feel shame if you end up drinking during your sobriety challenge. Don’t throw out the whole experience by beating yourself up over a glass of wine, he added. Grace recommended leading with curiosity and information. Learning more about the psychology and biology of alcohol really helped reduce her desire to drink, she said, and approaching her urges with curiosity rather than judgment allowed her to learn more about the role alcohol played in her life. There is also social pressure to drink. How do you not drink when everyone else is? Especially if friends get uncomfortable when they don’t see you with the beer you always have? The first thing is to remember that people may make you feel bad because they are uncomfortable about their own relationship with drinking, Grace said. It often helps to have a nonalcoholic drink in your hand at social events, White said, so the offer to have a drink doesn’t even come up. If you are hoping to curb your habits or boost your health, it is important not to see crossing the finish line as the time to overindulge, Mokari said. Dramatically reducing your consumption over that time can lower your tolerance, and what was enough for a buzz today could result in a much higher level of intoxication than you expect 30 days later, White said. You may also be undoing the changes in habit you have been building over the course of the month by going back even harder once it’s over, Grace added. “In our society, even saying ‘I want to take a break’ is super brave,” she said. “If you don’t change how you feel about it but white-knuckle it the whole month, it becomes like this forbidden fruit syndrome.”

Fantasy Football Today: Week 4 Injuries, #AskFFT Lineup Question And Rankings Updates – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/fantasy-football-today-week-4-injuries-askfft-lineup-question-and-rankings-updates-cbs-sports/ Good morning. While you’re getting breakfast ready, there’s football being played, with the Vikings and Saints having kicked off at 9:30 a.m. ET from London. And, fittingly for Week 4, there are a ton of injuries in that game to worry about, with the Saints hit especially hard — they’re without starting QB Jameis Winston, star RB Alvin Kamara and star WR Michael Thomas, with Jarvis Landry also entering the game beat up.  This week features a simply ridiculous amount of injuries, with a number of big players already ruled out — and many up in the air for Sunday’s games. There’s a lot you need to sort through, and the Fantasy Football Today team is here to help. Jamey Eisenberg, Heath Cummings, and Dave Richard are on CBS Sports HQ at 10 a.m. to answer your questions and get you the latest up-to-date injury news live until kickoff. And if you want more direct answers to your questions, I’ve got two more ways for you to win: Go to Twitter and use the hashtag “#AskFFT”, where our whole team will be answering questions all morning; and go to the FFT YouTube channel to chat with Adam Aizer, Frank Stampfl and I starting at 11:30. We’ll be there right up until kickoff answering as many questions as we can, so make sure you’re in the chat early to get your questions in.  For more Week 4 help, here’s the rest of our preview content to get you ready: Week 4 Start ‘Em & Sit ‘Em: QB | RB | WR Starts, sits and sleepers for every game Cheat Sheet: PPR | Non-PPR Week 4 Position Previews: QB | RB | WR | TE Week 4 Rankings: Jamey | Dave | Heath My Updated Week 4 Rankings: QB | RB | WR | TE For the rest of this morning’s newsletter, I have updates on the latest injury news as well as answers to your questions in an #AskFFT mailbag — email me at chris.towers@ViacomCBS.com throughout the week to get your emails included.  Week 4 Injury Report Quarterbacks Zach Wilson (knee) is set to start for the Jets as expected, and there shouldn’t be any surprises or suspense today.  Out: Jameis Winston (back/ankle), Dak Prescott (thumb), Mac Jones (ankle) Andy Dalton starts for the Saints, Cooper Rush will start for the Cowboys, and Brian Hoyer will start for the Patriots. Of those three, Dalton is the only one I would come close to wanting to use in a two-QB league, but he’s a low-end No. 2 at best.  Running backs Dalvin Cook (shoulder) and Jonathan Taylor (toe) were ultimately removed from the injury report and are expected to play their normal roles. Cook has experience playing through this shoulder issue in the past, but there is still some elevated risk of re-injury – not that you’re even considering sitting him. Dameon Pierce, Miles Sanders, James Conner, and AJ Dillon were all also removed from the injury report after being listed earlier in the week.  Questionable: Christian McCaffrey (thigh), Cordarrelle Patterson (knee) I’m expecting both to play, with some positive reports coming out about McCaffrey especially over the past few days. Patterson seems like he might be the longest shot to play seeing as he only got a limited session in during Friday’s practice and we haven’t gotten confirmation that he’ll play. He’s also the easiest to sit of the three if you’re wary, given his limited passing game role since Week 1. He’s an RB2, and if Patterson is out, I would only consider Tyler Allgeier an RB3, because I wouldn’t expect much of a passing game role.  Out: D’Andre Swift (shoulder/ankle), David Montgomery (ankle/knee), Boston Scott (rib) No real surprises here – Scott’s absence could mean more opportunities for Kenneth Gainwell, though Scott only has 10 carries and one target through three games, so it isn’t a significant role he’s leaving behind. With Swift out, Jamaal Williams figures to be the Lions lead rusher, with Craig Reynolds likely to take on some passing downs. Williams is the Start of the Week for the matchup against the Seahawks, and it’s a great matchup – albeit one where Williams is playing in a very beat up offense that could struggle to move the ball. He’s more of an RB2 for me. Khalil Herbert is the better option in Davis Montgomery’s absence, if you ask me (and you are).  Wide receivers There are a ton of WR injuries to keep track of heading into today’s games, but at least the likes of A.J. Brown, Allen Lazard, DeVonta Smith, Greg Dortch, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Michael Gallup should be good to go Sunday, among others. Bears rookie Velus Jones Jr. is also set to make his NFL debut, per reports, and remains worth a look in deeper leagues just in case this passing game starts to figure something out.  Questionable: Chris Godwin (Hamstring), Julio Jones (Knee), Gabe Davis (Ankle), Jarvis Landry (Ankle), Josh Reynolds (Ankle), Laviska Shenault Jr. (Hamstring), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (Abdomen), Marquise Brown (Foot), Rondale Moore (Hamstring), Russell Gage (Hamstring), Zay Jones (Ankle) The Buccaneers guys are obviously worth watching. My expectation is that Godwin is the least likely of the trio to play, with both he and Jones expected to be game-time decisions – Jones didn’t practice Friday, but with a “rest” tag, which complicates things. My preference would be to avoid non-Mike Evans receivers for the Buccaneers until they prove healthy enough to make it through a full game. There is going to be plenty of interest in Josh Reynolds, given the absence of Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark, but I’ll just remind you that there was very little interest in starting Reynolds last season when he was playing without most of those guys. He did have a decent stretch where he caught 16 passes for 259 yards and a couple of scores over four games last season, albeit mostly after St. Brown broke out and took the offense along with him. Reynolds isn’t a terrible option, but I’m expecting that offense to mostly be pretty bad with all their injuries, and Reynolds may not be good enough to overcome that.  Otherwise, it looks like Valdes-Scantling and Davis are expected to play, as are Brown and Moore – Moore will be making his season debut, and his return makes it tougher to trust Dortch. Moore has a RB2/3 upside in this offense, but I’m not sure he’ll play a full complement of snaps just yet. He’s a stash.  Doubtful: Breshad Perriman (knee/hamstring) Out: Keenan Allen (Hamstring), Michael Thomas (Foot), Hunter Renfrow (Concussion), Amon-Ra St. Brown (Ankle), Wan’Dale Robinson (Knee), A.J. Green (Knee), Kadarius Toney (Hamstring), Jakobi Meyers (knee), D.J. Chark (Ankle) Mack Hollins is coming off a huge game with Renfrow out, and he’s an interesting flier for this one. Josh Palmer has some appeal for the Chargers as well, and both of them are in the same WR3/4 range as Reynolds for me. If Landry plays, he’s not far from that role, though the absence of Winston adds some complications for the Saints offense as a whole – which includes Chris Olave coming off a massive game. Olave is my favorite of that whole crew, including the WR3/4 types already mentioned, but I’m a little worried about what the switch from Winston to Dalton means for him.  Tight ends Questionable: Dawson Knox (back/hip), Dalton Schultz (knee)  Both guys are expected to play, though with Schultz we have specific reporting indicating that, while Knox is more of an assumption – he was able to practice on a limited basis every day this week. Schultz is the better Fantasy option if he plays, though I wouldn’t be surprised if his role was limited, and he’s less of a must-start option than you’re typically used to with him.  #AskFFT Mailbag Send your questions to Chris.Towers@ViacomCBS.com to be included next week John: I don’t trust Matthew Stafford on Monday night, so I believe the best two options (that are available) are Marcus Mariota and Kirk Cousins. I know Cousins has a good history against the Saints, but he just got pounded by the Eagles “under the lights” and this again is a prime time game again in London Sunday morning. Jefferson currently also struggling to connect with him. The Saints are also statistically stomping all over QBs stats, so I’m leaning towards Mariota. It looks unlikely that Myles Garrett and JaDaveon Clowney can go, two huge blows to the front. Cleveland has also given up monster plays, including to Baker and Flacco. With Mariota’s mobility and the high over/under for this matchup, I think that makes him the play and up for a monster day, with a safer floor as well. What do you think?  John, I’m going to be honest, I think you might be overthinking this one. Mariota has been decent, as I hoped he would be, but he also just had 19.6 points against a pretty bad Seahawks defense. Stafford was awful in the season opener and only had 10.2 points in Week 3, but he also had both Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson drop touchdowns, and he averaged 10 yards per attempt despite that. The 49ers have allowed the second-fewest Fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks so far, but they’ve also faced Justin Fields, Geno Smith, and Russell Wilson, and I’m not sure we can really say that’s a particularly impressive stretch at this point. I’m sticking with Stafford here.  Albert: I have Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams as bench replacements for Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Chargers are not looking as good as everyone thought they would be so far and Justin Herbert is a little banged up and on the road, so I’m a little hesitant on Williams. On the other hand, Wilson is facing the Pittsburgh defense with QB Zach Wilson making his comeback from injury, so I’m a little hesitant with him too. Who would you go with?  I think both of these guys are a little less certain than they should be for exactly the reasons you give. I’m going to give Williams the edge simply because of his longer-term track record...

Alan Cross Has Seen The Future Of Music And Says It’s All About ‘Web3’ And The Metaverse – Global News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/alan-cross-has-seen-the-future-of-music-and-says-its-all-about-web3-and-the-metaverse-global-news/ SINGAPORE — If you want to kill a conversation quickly, just bring up words like “metaverse,” “crypto,” and “blockchain.” Eyes glaze over followed by some version of “Oh, look at the time. I must go.” I can relate. “Metaverse” conjures up vague notions of whatever Facebook is building and involves wearing a heavy and expensive headset. “Crypto” is some weird virtual currency Matt Damon keeps trying to sell us and may or may not include a thing called Bitcoin. And “blockchain?” Who knows? Here’s another term you can use to execute any conversation: “Web3.” Ready or not, this is where the internet is headed. Hold on. Let’s back up. The age of the internet is entering its third major era of evolution. Web 1.0 involved everyone building websites and publishing content. Think about all the gaudy, basic websites that littered the internet a couple of decades ago. Communication was almost exclusively one-way, from the publisher to the public. Content was pushed out. Story continues below advertisement We’re currently in the 2.0 era, a time controlled by big tech companies like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat — and all the streaming music platforms. Web 2.0 allows users to publish and communicate with each other — at least to a limited extent, anyway, through leaving comments and maybe direct messaging. More importantly, though, Web 2.0 has allowed these companies to become immensely wealthy by using the personal data we happily provide them by using their free services. Data is the new oil. In fact, data is now the most valuable commodity in the known universe. This is a problem because it means that by providing these companies with our data, we’re all basically working for them. For free. Think about it: When you go online, you become a data miner providing the tech companies with the rich, raw material they use to sell stuff back to you. Canadians are online more than six hours a day, nearly two hours of which are spent on social media. In South Korea, the average person spends 10 hours a day online. Not only is this actual unpaid labour, but we also don’t know what data these companies have on us. And they won’t say. Plus they keep finding new algorithmic ways for us to provide them with even more data which they then use to sell us even more stuff. Web 2.0 companies hold all the cards. Story continues below advertisement Big Tech is making trillions from our work and isn’t sharing in any of the proceeds. If this were physical labour, it would be called “slavery.” But because data isn’t framed in the same way, it’s completely legal. This seems … wrong, doesn’t it? Enter Web3. I’m going to use a bunch of words here — I think correctly — that define what Web3 is: Decentralized public ownership of property in the online world that’s tracked and enforced by blockchain technology. It involves things like metaverses (yes, plural), cryptocurrencies, digital tokens, and NFTs, things that will allow internet users to become owners. Instead of giving up our personal information using free apps for nothing in return, we will participate in the creation, operation, and governance of many of the things that make up the internet. I just spent a week at the All That Matters conference in Singapore where people from the world of music, eSports, traditional sports, broadcasting, gaming, and marketing gathered to discuss this new era of the internet. At this point, we could dive very deep into the weeds and get extraordinarily technical. Instead, let’s just skip ahead to some examples of how this will affect music. Some are already calling this the musicverse. And it sounds pretty cool. Story continues below advertisement First, no one is building a capital-M-one-size-fits-all Metaverse akin to what we saw with The Oasis in the book Ready Player One. A better way to think of what’s coming is many, many different metaverses that offer 3-D interactivity within many different artists in many different ways. 19:01 Inside the Metaverse Inside the Metaverse – May 7, 2022 We’re already seeing the debut of some community-building apps like Drrops which allow community building between artists and fans. Headed by Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida, Drrops was built with the idea of making it possible for artists to communicate directly with fans and vice versa without any sort of social media intermediary to skim away all the data. Bands will be able to learn more about their audiences while fans will be able to share exclusive opportunities, experiences, and merchandise, both real and virtual. Fans will be able to commune with each other, too, enhancing a sense of community. Trending Stories For example, superfans could be offered a digital token — think of it as a virtual ticket — that will give them access to special things from the artist. Or the artist could sit backstage chatting with fans arriving at the venue, asking what songs they might like to see on the setlist that night. Individual fans might be rewarded with a shout-out from the stage. Story continues below advertisement Web3 will also impact touring. Going on the road for months or even years at a time is expensive, exhausting, and bad for the environment. One solution might be to have the artist set up in one location. If you want to see them live, you can but tickets will be very expensive because that will become an increasingly exclusive experience. But if you can’t be there in person, that’s fine because the metaverse has no constraints of time, space, and even identity (more on that in just a sec). You’ll be able to enjoy the performance online in a VR/metaverse way for an exponentially cheaper price. Instead of getting 15,000 fans to pay $200+ each for a ticket in city after city after city, the artist will be able to stay in one place, playing in front of maybe a few thousand (or perhaps even just a few hundred fans) each night while simultaneously performing for, say, five million people in a metaverse who have paid $5 each. One such gig could theoretically gross $25 million and reach far more people in a much more efficient way. 5:14 Privacy in the metaverse Privacy in the metaverse – Jul 10, 2022 That’s not pie-in-the-sky thinking, either. Artists like Marshmello have already held digital concerts in venues like Fortnite in front of 10 million fans who not only got to watch and dance (via avatars) but were also able to buy merch. BTS has a virtual concert that reached one million fans in 191 countries. Not all at once, mind you. But time and space are meaningless in the metaverse. Imagine how this could be scaled for a festival like Glastonbury or Coachella. Story continues below advertisement Or how about this: I predict that someone will inevitably recreate the Woodstock ’69 experience in a musicverse. See what I mean about things being freed from time and space? At the same time, the artist will have a chance to build loyalty and community in entirely new ways. For example, back in 2019, Billie Eilish offered fans an on-demand tour of her bedroom, the place where many of her songs were born. Or maybe you’ll be able to get into a recording studio to collaborate with an artist on a session or remix. In this case, you become a creator of the content with the artist. Timbaland has already demonstrated this. These are examples of how the musicverse will allow artists to provide their fans with an unlimited amount of attention and in ways not available at any price in meatspace. Talk about strengthening the ties between artists and fans, right? On the business and accounting side, Web3 will also allow for much more efficient payment of royalties. The blockchain will keep track of who owns a song and who needs to be paid for a stream or a sale at a level of accuracy and security that far exceeds what we have today. Fans will be able to own digital property. Let’s say you want to purchase a particular seat in a metaverse concert venue. That seat is yours and no one can ever sit in it. Later, If you want, you may be able to sell that property for a profit. But because all purchases are connected to the blockchain — the public ledger of all transactions and tracker or ownership — such sales and purchases will be tracked and policed. When such a sale takes place, the original creator of that digital property — say a rare piece of music originally made available only to superfans — will get a piece of the action on the resale. Try that with the sale of used vinyl. Story continues below advertisement If all this seems totally foreign to you, you need to spend some time speaking to any Gen Z music fan. They’re already engaging in entertainment this way. Around 79 per cent of young music fans are already okay with seeing their favourite artists in the metaverse. And there’s more. About 65 per cent of Gen Z say that how you present yourself online is more important than how you present yourself in real life. Let that sink in for a second. Remember how we used to project our identities to the world by wearing a specific artist’s T-shirt? (Here’s where I should point out that one in three fans of fashion who are aware of Web3 opportunities have already purchased some kind of digital fashion.) Gen Alpha, kids born since 2010, are going to take this even further. They will grow up in a world where virtual creators are the new celebrities. We’re already seeing that with TikTok influencers. That, though, is just the tip of the iceberg. And here’s what I find fascinating and rather concerning for Canadians: Web3 is already rooted deeply in Asia, which is far ahead of North America and Western Europe. Digital citizens in China, Thailand, Indonesia, and India are already deep ...

Up 300% So Far, This Is The Coin To Perform Better Than Bitcoin And Ethereum This Fall – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/up-300-so-far-this-is-the-coin-to-perform-better-than-bitcoin-and-ethereum-this-fall-cryptonews/ Disclaimer: The text below is an advertorial article that is not part of Cryptonews.com editorial content. While Bitcoin and many other digital assets are tanking, some coins are proving to be extremely resilient in the face of current market volatility.  One coin that is climbing at an amazing rate, even as the rest of the market crashes is RBIS, the token fueling the ArbiSmart financial services ecosystem. In the last 3 weeks alone, it has gone up 300% and it is continuing to rise.  So, what has insulated RBIS from the bear market and why are analysts projecting a massive jump to over 30 times the current value by the end of 2022?  Consistent Profits in a Downturn Probably the main reason for the rising RBIS price is that the ArbiSmart ecosystem offers bear-resistant utilities that enable users to make the same, reliable profit in a downturn or an upturn.   First up, ArbiSmart offers automated crypto arbitrage. This is a low-risk investment strategy that makes money from temporary differences in the price of a crypto asset, across exchanges. These price disparities occur equally regularly, whichever direction the market is moving. ArbiSmart’s automated system, tracks hundreds of assets on multiple exchanges, searching for temporary price differences.  It buys the asset on the exchange offering the lowest price before instantly selling it on the exchange where the price is highest. Users just deposit funds, and the algorithm does the rest, generating profits of up to 147% a year. The exact profit percentage is based on the amount deposited and can be calculated prior to investing.  ArbiSmart also offers another way for crypto owners to make a profit, even during a crash. In July of this year, ArbiSmart introduced its interest-generating wallet that offers annual rates, unmatched anywhere else, of up to 147%, which remain the same in bull or bear markets. The wallet supports 25 different FIAT and cryptocurrencies and offers a variety of savings options. Wallet holders can lock funds in short-term savings plans, lasting as little as a month, or in long-term plans lasting up to 5 years, with a higher return, the longer the funds are locked up.  The interest rate is based on the wallet-holders account level, which is determined by how much RBIS they own. More RBIS means a better return on balances in every supported currency, from Bitcoin, Ether and Shiba Inu to Euro, Pound Sterling, and USD. The best rates are earned on RBIS balances though users can still increase their earnings, even if they choose not to convert their currency into the native token, by just receiving the daily interest in RBIS.  An Expanding Suite of Services  The ArbiSmart development team has been hard at work expanding the ecosystem throughout the bear run and these efforts are set to continue until the end of the year.  In late Q3 and in Q4 ArbiSmart will be introducing a mobile application for earning, buying, storing, and exchanging crypto.  It will also be launching a decentralized protocol, where yield farmers will be able to provide loans and liquidity in return for up to 190,000% APY as well as 0.3% of the fee charged for each trade. The protocol will also offer a unique twist, with gamification features that enable participants to score points and increase their annual percentage yields. This winter, ArbiSmart will also be introducing an NFT marketplace, as well as launching its own one-of-a-kind collection of unique digital items. These will be closely followed, in 2023, by the launch of a professional cryptocurrency exchange, as well as a play-to-earn, gaming metaverse, where participants will be able to purchase, develop, and sell virtual real-estate. All these RBIS utilities will be interconnected, so if an RBIS owner uses additional utilities they will receive better returns. For example, an ArbiSmart NFT will serve as a digital art investment, while also serving as a point -booster, generating higher scores for yield farmers and increasing their annual yields.  When using the ArbiSmart ecosystem participants will be earning profits from various RBIS utilities, such as staking, liquidity provision, and arbitrage trading. They can them massively increase those profits by locking the earnings in a wallet savings plan for a chosen timeframe, making a secondary source of income, with no extra effort. A Steady Upward Trajectory Through this year’s prolonged bear trend, the arbitrage system and the wallet have provided a secure haven, making them popular investment options for crypto owners. Meanwhile, as the wallet gains momentum, and more people open savings plans, an increasing amount of RBIS will be locked up, leaving circulation and limiting the available supply.  Since all utilities in the ArbiSmart ecosystem require the use of RBIS, with the addition of each new service the token demand will rise. The supply is forever restricted, capped at 450 million RBIS, so as demand rises, the supply will shrink, pushing the price higher and generating huge capital gains. RBIS is on a steadily rising trajectory, even as other coins crash. To start profiting from your Bitcoin, whichever way the market shifts next, open a wallet right now!

Republicans Are The New Isolationists; Will US Retreat From World Stage? The Hill
Republicans Are The New Isolationists; Will US Retreat From World Stage? – The Hill https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/republicans-are-the-new-isolationists-will-us-retreat-from-world-stage-the-hill/ Sputnik, Government Pool Photo via AP From left, Moscow-appointed head of Kherson Region Vladimir Saldo, Moscow-appointed head of Zaporizhzhia region Yevgeny Balitsky, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Denis Pushilin, leader of self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and Leonid Pasechnik, leader of self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic applaud during a ceremony to sign the treaties for four regions of Ukraine to join Russia, at the Kremlin in Moscow, Friday, Sept. 30, 2022. The signing of the treaties making the four regions part of Russia follows the completion of the Kremlin-orchestrated “referendums.” The world is facing the most serious threat of nuclear confrontation since the Cuban missile crisis 60 years ago. At the same time, we’re seeing a growing isolationist movement in the U.S. The Republican Party has been taken over by Donald Trump and his army of right-wing populists. The GOP is becoming an isolationist party. It is no longer the party that embraces the bold foreign policy of Ronald Reagan or the Bushes. By more than two to one, Republicans endorse the view that “We should pay less attention to problems overseas and concentrate on problems here at home.” Only 30 percent of Republicans believe “It is best for the future of our country to be active in world affairs.” Whenever a policy becomes difficult or costly, populist isolationism emerges. Americans were happy to win easy and decisive military victories in Granada and Panama and Kuwait. The public never supported President Reagan’s complicated policies of second-hand intervention in Nicaragua and El Salvador. In his Second Inaugural Address in 1997, Bill Clinton said, “America stands alone as the world’s indispensable nation.” Since World War II, whenever there has been a serious threat to world order or to humanitarian values, one rule has applied: If the United States does not do anything, nothing will be done. What would have happened if the United States had failed to act after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990? Most likely, nothing. Kuwait would have become part of Iraq. Having acted in Kuwait, the first President Bush left the crisis in Bosnia to the Europeans; Bosnia was in Europe’s backyard. The U.S. had no vital interests there. What happened? Nothing. The Europeans failed to act, and a new horror entered the world’s vocabulary: ethnic cleansing. Finally, the U.S. felt morally compelled to step in and lead a coalition to end the brutality. When atrocities occurred in Cambodia, Rwanda, Congo and Darfur, the whole world — including the United States — looked away. So nothing was done. The result was genocide. The message is that the United States has international interests as well as national interests. That has been the consensus of the political establishment since 1947. The American people have never completely bought into the idea of international interests, however. The war in Ukraine is the latest test. Now that the Cold War is over, the conflict seemingly has nothing to do with ideology. The rest of the world, including the United States, sees the Russian invasion as an act of aggression against a neighboring state. Very much like Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. When President George H.W. Bush addressed Congress in September 1990 after the invasion, he offered a stirring call to internationalist principle. Our purpose, Bush said, was to “defend civilized values around the world,” among them our willingness to “defend common vital interests,” “support the rule of law” and “stand up to aggression.” President Biden sounded a similar theme when he addressed the United Nations General Assembly last month. “This war is about extinguishing Ukraine’s right to exist as a state, pure and simple … That should make your blood run cold.” However, Russian President Vladimir Putin justifies the invasion as a defensive rather than an aggressive action. Putin has warned, “If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will of course use all means at our disposal to defend Russia and our people.” Putin defines Ukraine and its people as intrinsically Russian, and he is trying to turn it into a “fact” by annexing large parts of Ukrainian territory. In an address to the Russian nation on Sept. 21, Putin framed the war as an attempt to defend Russian sovereignty against a West that wants to use Ukraine as a tool to “divide and destroy Russia.” The U.S. interest is to prevent nuclear war. “If the territorial integrity of our nation is threatened,” Putin said, “we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. This is not a bluff.” With Putin now positioning himself as a strong and tough nationalist, and in the absence of a communist threat, Putin is actually getting some support from far-right conservatives in the U.S. and Europe — especially because his views on traditional cultural values are in line with theirs. Former President Donald Trump has praised Putin as a “genius” and criticized Ukraine for corruption and supposed interference in U.S. elections. As a result, isolationist sentiment has become resurgent in the far right of the Republican party. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, only 12 percent of Republicans expressed a “very favorable” opinion of NATO; among Democrats, the figure was 34 percent. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has warned, “If Republicans win the House and word starts to leak out that they’re done funding Ukraine, that has potentially catastrophic impacts on Ukrainian morale and their ability to carry the fight.” Populist opposition to continued U.S. aid for Ukraine is likely to come from grass-roots conservatives — and resonate with a Republican Congress.
