SEOUL, Oct 1 (Reuters) – The United States and South Korea agreed on Saturday to implement liquidity facilities to stabilise financial markets if needed, Korea’s finance ministry said after a teleconference between finance chiefs of the two countries.
The won is near its lowest level since March 2009, and has weakened 17% against the surging U.S. dollar so far in 2022, amid a broad sell-off in emerging market currencies as the Federal Reserve aggressively raises interest rates.
“The two countries are ready to work closely together to implement liquidity facilities when necessary, such as when financial instability is aggravated by the spread of (a) liquidity crunch in major economies, including Korea,” the ministry said in a statement after the call between the U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and South Korea finance minister Choo Kyung-ho.

The agreement reached on Saturday repeats the U.S. statement made when Yellen last visited Seoul in July, amid growing calls for the Bank of Korea to arrange a currency swap with the Federal Reserve to stabilise the dollar-won market.
However, the statement released on Saturday did not elaborate on whether the facilities that may be deployed referred to a currency swap and South Korea’s finance ministry did not give further details.
A $60-billion currency swap pact set up in March 2020 between the central banks of the two countries as an emergency step to stabilise markets expired at the end of last year.
Such a swap would allow South Korea to borrow a certain amount of U.S. dollars for a pre-set period and rate, in exchange for won, so as to resolve difficulties in dollar liquidity.
To help protect one of the world’s worst performing currencies, South Korean authorities has recently arranged a $10 billion currency swap program with the country’s state-run pension fund, a tool that allows the fund to finance its overseas investment with the central bank’s FX reserves, instead of buying dollars in the spot market.

As the Tennessee Valley Authority pushes to meet its ambitious goals for decarbonization, the authority’s independent watchdog is asking the nation’s largest public power company to bring more discipline to its operations.
Among its key conclusions, the TVA Office of the Inspector General found TVA needs to improve how it chooses and tracks new technologies, such as small modular nuclear reactors, to generate electricity for 10 million people across Tennessee and parts of six other states, as well as industrial and federal facilities.
Additionally, the inspector general warned that TVA is not effectively tracking what research and development records it is creating, and that records are stored on home and shared drives that could be vulnerable to outsiders.
The inspector general’s report, issued Thursday, focused on findings and recommendations, and includes TVA’s response to the report.
What did the watchdog report recommend?
“Over the past decade, TVA has generally adopted commercially available, mature resource technologies,” says the inspector general’s report. “However, as TVA seeks to integrate new resource technologies, such as small modular reactors, having consistent methods for evaluating new technologies may reduce negative consequences such as cost, increases, schedule delays, or delivering lower capability than expected.”
The inspector general recommends TVA follows a framework promoted by the Office of Government Accountability for adopting new technologies and evaluating their risks and readiness. TVA said it already has a variety of methods in place for evaluation, but agreed to standardize the process to follow the Office of Government Accountability recommendations.
As far as the weaknesses in records management, the report says that TVA management has been notified of these issues in the past but “limited steps were taken to address them.” Some of TVA’s research and development records “were being created or maintained by the agency, and records were being maintained on home drives and shared drives.”
A 2019 National Archives and Records Administration report said TVA needs to inventory these records. However, the inspector general’s report said TVA’s research and development groups have not figured out which of its records should be considered official and therefore be maintained. The research and development teams have also failed to organize and store their records on TVA’s content management system.
TVA response is included in the inspector general’s report, and the authority says it has already made progress on implementing standard programs and practices for its technology development and recordkeeping. The inspector general’s auditor has accepted TVA’s plan to improve.
How will TVA significantly reduce carbon emissions?
In an effort to reduce 70% of its carbon emissions by 2030, TVA is developing new or unproven technology, applying existing technology to different or new uses; or combining both new and existing technology to achieve its goal.
Among the efforts to meet its decarbonization goal, TVA is:
Reducing the use of coal plants and considering retiring its coal sector by 2035
Investing in its nuclear and hydro sectors
Investing in its gas sector to be reliable year round and be able to support the intermittent use of renewable energy
Increasing its solar capacity by 2035 to 10,000 megawatts
Increasing its portfolio in battery storage by including lithium-ion batteries. This storage will aide the use of renewable energy sources such as solar as it will contain energy from solar even when the sun does not shine.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Seneca Gaming Corporation and executives gathered Friday in Niagara Falls for their second annual Every Child Matters walk, bringing awareness of the tragedies that took place.
The event, which began at 5:30 p.m., featured special guest speakers with motivational speeches. After that, the walk took place.
People dressed in orange, making a visible and powerful statement to bring brightness.
The remains of roughly more than 1,000 children have been discovered on the grounds of three former residential schools in two Canadian provinces since May. Unmarked graves have even been discovered inside of the residential boarding schools.
The Every Child Matters walk allowed people of the Indigenous community come together for remembrance and to help heal one another.
“Beginning in the 1800s and lasting well into the 1990s, tens of thousands of Native American children were forced to attend residential schools across the United States and Canada, where they were forced to unlearn their names, unlearn traditional language and unlearn their culture. They were often the victims of physical abuse and sexual abuse,” a statement for the event said.

A Davidson County man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for possession of child pornography after a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led to his arrest.
Kevin Richard Heidel, 38, of Lexington was sentenced on Thursday to 240 months in prison followed by a twenty-year term of supervised release, for possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. Department of Justice Middle District Court in Greensboro.

According to court documents, Heidel, who was a registered sex offender, was identified in 2019 by investigators from the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children revealed that an Instagram user in Davidson County was suspected of uploading images of child pornography to the platform.
In December 2019, Davidson County Sheriff’s Office officers executed a search warrant at Heidel’s residence where they located a cell phone that contained child pornography. Further investigation revealed child pornography on another phone belonging to Heidel that was located in the front yard of one of Heidel’s neighbors, according to court documents.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Probation and Parole and Homeland Security Investigation assisted with the Heidel investigation.
In 2014, Heidel was arrested for taking pornographic photos of two girls under the age of 16. He was charged with two felony counts of indecent liberties with a child.
According to an arrest warrant at the time, Denton police interviewed the juvenile children and obtained information that Heidel made them undress and filmed them nude for sexual gratification. Two laptop computers and an electronic tablet were confiscated at the time of arrest.
Heidel is the third registered sex offender to be sentenced by the U.S. Justice Department Middle District this month. On Sept. 22, Christopher Lea Kahele, 40, of Moore County, was sentenced to 240 months of prison followed by 25 years of supervised release, for possession of child pornography.
On the same day, a Randolph County man, Luis Armando Diaz-Otero, 33, was sentenced to 150 months of prison followed by 20 years of supervised release after a tip from NCMEC regarding a Google account led to his arrest and conviction for possession of child pornography.
The cases were brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice to combat online child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative is led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, and focuses on coordinating federal, state, and local resources to better identify and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

How she absorbs a new place:
I take notes. I love mistranslations. I take pictures of mistranslations, when things are translated into funny English. I take notes about how places make me feel. I was in Istanbul in May, and just the names of places are so beautiful. Everything sounds like poetry to me. I’m usually seduced by the sounds of words. I can’t always remember them unless I write them down. It’s all of the senses, but especially words. I’ve learned so few words in Turkish because they were always so complicated, but they’re beautiful. No wonder Rumi wrote poetry! It’s just the kind of place that is very conducive to poetry. But every place is conducive to poetry, because poetry’s about being very present in the moment and paying attention. That’s the same thing as a tourist, isn’t it?
Her approach to packing:
I telescope a lot of bags inside bags, or I have to have a bag that expands. Everything has to function three different ways. I like to travel with Mexican shopping bags inside my suitcases, and I don’t use a purse; I’ll use a flat cloth bag. The Mexican shopping bag is for all my books. I don’t understand people that travel with one little suitcase, because I don’t want to live with regrets. I want to take things home.
What she keeps in her carry-on:
I always have my laptop, and I carry a little basket with my jewelry that I wear to become “the author.” I don’t carry much jewelry if I’m just traveling as myself, but if I have to be “the author,” then I have my favorite turquoise cuff, or something that has to do with my culture. I always have a rebozo silk shawl or some silver Taxco earrings or bracelet, something that can empower me when I speak, but also educates the public about my culture.

MAINE – The Healthy Living for ME network has announced the workshops that will be starting up across the state in October. Topics addressed by the workshops include managing chronic conditions and chronic pain, improving fitness and balance, and managing diabetes.
Healthy Living for ME welcomes referrals from healthcare providers. The network’s evidence-based programming can help patients manage and prevent conditions before they become more serious or result in emergency situations.
“Our October workshops include a few being offered by two new partners in the network, Catholic Charities of Maine and Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital. We’re so pleased to be able to continue to expand our network and provide more access to free and low-cost resources that help Mainers improve their health and wellness,” said Maija Dyke, Business Manager of Healthy Living for ME.

A Matter of Balance – This workshop emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

The first Saturday in October is almost here and that means the landscape of college football will be dominated by the developing conference races as we approach the season’s midpoint. Saturday’s Week 5 slate brings us plenty of action with conference title race implications from noon ET through well past midnight, including a showdown in the SEC West where No. 2 Alabama heads to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to take on the 20th-ranked Razorbacks in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week.
Elsewhere in the SEC, No. 14 Ole Miss will host No. 7 Kentucky in a cross-division matchup that will serve as a measuring stick for each of the two upstart contenders. Meanwhile, a much-anticipated battle in the ACC Atlantic takes center stage in primetime as No. 5 Clemson hosts No. 10 NC State.

SINGAPORE — There was a “DJ” on a large, illuminated stage playing a remix of Coldplay’s hit A Sky Full of Stars, and there were dozens of “people” dancing to the beat.
The famed Supertrees from Gardens by the Bay appeared to tower over the venue, and they were pulsating with pink neon lights. The ground, too, was emanating light, and a building that looked like Marina Bay Sands stood in the distance.
This concert would have cost organisers and arm and a leg to host, taking up virtually the entirety of the Gardens by the Bay venue.
But the truth was, the organisers had not spent a single cent on renting out the space, or on any physical props, for that matter.
In fact, “I” was attending this concert, not in my own 28-year-old male self, but in pixels, as a young female avatar wearing hot shorts and a hoodie.
In other words, I was attending a concert in the metaverse.
A metaverse is a three-dimensional virtual world where people socialise, work and play, and in this case, the metaverse was akin to a gaming world, where I had a specific character that could walk around and interact with the 3D environment.
The idea of the metaverse puzzled me, being someone who hardly plays computer games.
So, when I heard that telecommunications company M1 was teaming up with Gardens by the Bay and e-gaming firm Electronic Sports Private Limited (ESPL) on Tuesday (Sept 27) to showcase a demo of a metaverse concert, I joined in on the fun.
GROWTH IN POPULARITY OF THE METAVERSE
It seemed like a concept for the distant future, up till I noticed that just last month, a couple had actually gotten married in the metaverse, which they said was the first marriage of its kind.
In fact, the metaverse has been a buzzword for over a year, ever since Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg renamed his Facebook company to Meta in October last year, signalling its big push into the metaverse.
Since then, various companies, both local and global, have delved into this concept.
For instance, DBS Bank last month collaborated with The Sandbox, a decentralised virtual gaming world, to acquire a unit of virtual real estate in The Sandbox metaverse.
Even governments have been delving into the metaverse. English language daily the Khaleej Times reported last month that the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Economy would have a new headquarters located in the metaverse, where anyone can visit.
Whether the popularity of the metaverse will continue to expand will depend on an “ecosystem” of different stakeholders, said Professor Lim Sun Sun, head of humanities, arts and social sciences at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.
For instance, technology such as 5G networks, the accessibility of immersive devices such as virtual reality (VR) headsets, and the variety of metaverse events have to develop at the same pace to sustain the growth of the concept.
“It speaks to the broader ecosystem, whether or not the metaverse environments are appealing, whether they are welcoming, whether the hardware becomes more comfortable, whether that sort of physiological experience of interacting with others (in the metaverse) becomes more palatable over time, and so on,” said Prof Lim.
BOTH A LIVE PERFORMANCE AND A VIDEO GAME
For the metaverse concert demo, members of the media were invited to Floral Fantasy, an indoor garden at Gardens by the Bay, where we could use several smartphones on display, which was to be our window to the metaverse.
This didn’t seem very special at first, as I initially thought that having a VR headset would make for a more immersive experience, by granting users a 360-degree view of the metaverse. However, I understood that not everyone would have a VR headset, so a smartphone could actually be the primary mode the metaverse is accessed in the future.
According to M1 and Gardens by the Bay, having the metaverse experience on a smartphone was a remarkable achievement in itself.
Deputy chief executive officer of Gardens by the Bay Lee Kok Fatt said that it is only with a 5G network that the metaverse can be experienced from the typical mobile devices.
“The content (of the metaverse) is very rich and heavy, so before the advent of 5G, it required users to download a very big file to access the user experience,” he said.
He added that Gardens by the Bay, M1 and ESPL will be working together to provide 5G connectivity at Gardens by the Bay’s indoor venues and this will make such metaverse events more accessible there.
What I found special about the metaverse was that it was a mashup between both a live performance and a video game.
The “live performance” came in the form of an actual DJ, Jasmine H Nera, who goes by the stage name DJ Red, playing at this demo event. Her physical self, however, was at another location within Gardens by the Bay, while her avatar was on the metaverse stage that I could see from the phone, behind a DJ console.
There was a “live chat” function, where I could type messages or questions to Ms Nera. I typed: “How will the metaverse benefit you?”
Ms Nera’s own physical face popped up on a large screen in the back of the metaverse stage and she was able to reply me, live.
“The convenience is there because it allows me to just stream from wherever I am… that provides me a great way to talk to my fans, especially the international fans, because they are not going to be able to fly in just for my show,” she said.
I found this function particularly distinct from a typical live performance, where performers would scarcely be able to respond to specific fans amid the chorus of screams. It added an intimate touch to the event.
And with the performance being viewed on a smartphone, it was a largely two-dimensional experience, with the sound quality itself the same as when watching a YouTube video. This paled in comparison to being at a live concert, as the feeling of jostling with the crowd and having live music blast out of large speakers could not be replicated.
On the other hand, the entire experience also felt like I was playing a video game, with my avatar’s movements around the metaverse space, from running around to jumping, controlled by me.
This was in theory supposed to give my avatar some degree of freedom in the concert venue. Sure enough, I could just weave between other partygoers and easily find myself at the front of the stage.
For now, there was also no way for me to change my avatar from a woman to a man, let alone customise the avatar’s appearance and clothing, but this was an option that will be added in later, the developers told me.
Other burning questions which I had were also addressed, namely, whether there was any safeguard against harassment or abusive behaviour in the metaverse. For instance, could an avatar run on stage and disrupt the show, or hurl vulgarities at other audience members?
Project Chair of ESPL Roland Ong said that while there is nothing to stop users from posting what they want, there is the possibility of having moderators on the platform, to ensure that anyone deemed to be abusive or disruptive to the performance can be booted out of the metaverse.
“Secondly, we can use software to catch words that are undesirable, so that they are censored right away,” he added.
Overall, it was an extremely novel experience, one that I would not mind doing again when the operating system is more refined and updated. It presents an opportunity for me to “attend” a performance without committing a lot of time and money, yet also allows for some degree of interaction that an online video cannot provide.
However, I can safely say that I would not want the metaverse to replace actual live performances, as there is a certain tangibility about them that is difficult to emulate.
THE AIM IS NOT TO REPLACE LIVE PERFORMANCES: M1, GARDENS BY THE BAY
My concerns that we were heading for an entirely virtual world bereft of “traditional” live performances were quickly assuaged, because the aim of testing out the metaverse was never to fully replace the real life concert experience.
Mr Ong from ESPL said that the metaverse will allow tourists the chance to “explore” Gardens by the Bay without flying down.
However, the end goal is still to attract people to visit the physical venue itself.
“(Gardens by the Bay’s) status as a global icon, we can use it to host local artists and showcase them to the world, that is another one of our objectives,” Mr Lee said.
Chief corporate sales and solutions officer from M1, Mr Willis Sim, said that other than cutting the costs of renting out large spaces, the metaverse provides concert organisers the opportunity expand their reach, by either holding an event entirely on the metaverse, or have hybrid events, where some of the audience is live, and another group is in attendance online.
“This will increase the revenue for the artists, the concert and the event organiser,” he said.
Members of the public, too, can hold their own metaverse events at Gardens by the Bay.
“If you book a wedding package, you can discuss with us right away, if you want an option to also make it available on the metaverse,” said Mr Ong.

Option 1: Disable Geotagging Altogether
If you never want your iPhone to tag photos and videos with geographical information, you can disable Location Services for Camera and any other camera apps you use. To do so, go to Settings – Privacy (iOS 15) or Privacy & Security (iOS 16) – Location Services, then choose “Camera” or another app from the list.
From the app’s settings, you can:
Disable “Precise Location” to generalize recorded location data.
Change “While Using the App” to “Never” to disable the location access period.
Change “While Using the App” to “Ask Next Time Or When I Share.” When you open a new session in your camera app, it will ask you for location access. You can turn off Precise Location and choose “Don’t Allow” (to never let it access your location) or “Allow Once” (to have it ask the same question with every new session).
Option 2: Delete Geotags When Sharing
Since iOS 13, you can quickly remove the location from any picture or video you share from the Photos app. Once you open the share sheet, tap “Options” at the top, and toggle off the “Location” switch before sharing the content with any person or service. This even works when sharing multiple photos or videos with embedded geotags. If you don’t see the “Location” toggle, the content doesn’t have any location data in its Exif metadata.
Option 3: Delete Geotags Before Sharing
Since iOS 15, you can delete the geotags in your photos and videos from the Photos app, which comes in handy if you don’t plan on sharing the content just yet but know you probably will.
To delete the geotag of one photo or video:
Open the content, then swipe it up or tap the info (i) button to reveal the content’s metadata. Tap “Adjust” below the map, then hit “No Location.”
Open the content, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the quick actions menu, then hit “No Location.” (This works on iOS 16 and later only.)
Open the content on iOS 15, tap the share icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the share sheet, then hit “No Location.” (This works on iOS 15 only.)

That way, if anyone looks up the content’s metadata, they’ll see a fake location instead of the real one. It could take them on a wild goose chase if they attempt to locate your whereabouts, favorite hangouts, or frequently visited locations.
It’s pretty much the same process to change the address for a photo or video in the Photos app as it is to delete it, as seen in Option 3 above, only you choose a specific location instead of “No Location.”
To falsify the geotag of one photo or video:
Open the content, then swipe it up or tap the info (i) button to reveal the content’s metadata. Tap “Adjust” below the map, then search for and select any location you want.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Despite crypto interest being at an all-time low, Hawaii is among the Top 10 states that are still obsessed with digital currency, according to a new study. Finance website AtoZMarkets.com found that interest is over 80 times lower than the peak of early November 2021; analysis of Google Trends data also revealed that crypto interest in the last 12 months has reached an all-time low.
The study looked at which states still have their crypto obsession intact, despite the drop in online interest.

Each state was given a total score determined by main crypto-oriented search terms over the last 12 months, including “bitcoin” and “cryptocurrency.” California was ranked as having the highest interest in crypto with a score of 675, followed by Nevada and New York. Hawaii was ranked as the seventh most crypto-obsessed state with a total score of 548, according to the study.

Hawaii’s crypto market almost took its last breath after House Bill 2108 was indefinitely deferred in early May. The bill would have established a program for the licensure, regulation and oversight of digital currency companies in the state. Without its passing, the Digital Currency Innovation Lab was scheduled to close for transactions on June 30 for both businesses and consumers.
Then on June 2, a two-year extension of the DCIL was announced. The news was a sigh of relief for the cryptocurrency companies participating in the pilot program. They can continue to do business in Hawaii without having to first obtain a state money transmitter license, at least until June 30, 2024.

Washington is spending billions of your tax dollars every year to hypothetically achieve technological dominance over Communist China, but the ultimate beneficiary of that effort may just be the CCP.
That is the shocking conclusion of a Department of Defense (DoD) review that found China was stealing technology developed in the U.S. by exploiting the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The report explicitly states, “China, not the U.S., is the ultimate beneficiary of DoD and other [U. S. Government] research investments.”
This is how it works: American companies receiving taxpayer assistance for technology development from DoD and other agencies are recruited by China to continue their work at institutions associated with China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army. The U.S. company is then dissolved and the research and intellectual property paid for with U.S. tax dollars is transferred to a subsidiary in China.
Just like that, American-made ingenuity is shipped overseas to our leading adversary, and we, the American taxpayers, are funding it!
This isn’t just another case of intellectual property theft. This ongoing scheme has national and economic security implications according to the Pentagon.
A researcher and the co-founders of a now-dissolved company that received four grants to develop technology for spacecraft and drones, for example, were allegedly recruited by the Chinese government and now work for institutions affiliated with the communist regime’s defense agency.
Tens of millions of your tax dollars were spent on the development of other technologies, including broadband, biohazard detectors, solar energy, designs for military devices, and pharmaceuticals, that were all transferred to China.
In an effort to end this insanity, I gave my September 2022 Squeal Award to all of the government agencies that have allowed these double-crossing companies to take your money and run off to China with the breakthroughs that rightfully belong to the U.S.
I also introduced bipartisan legislation, that swiftly passed the Senate unanimously last week and the House just yesterday, that will require government agencies to do background checks on businesses seeking federal support while having ties to foreign countries of concern like China. The bill allows the agencies to take back taxpayer dollars from any business found to be a risk to U.S. national security. And I’m thrilled to report, this bill was signed into law by the president today.
No matter how much of your money Washington spends to “win” the global tech race, we will never win by surrendering American-made innovation and subsidizing our adversaries. This cycle will continue until these grant programs are both required and empowered to hold unscrupulous recipients of taxpayer funds accountable for selling out to China. Thankfully, the new law I helped make will put an end to this cycle!

Back in August, when record rains drenched North Texas, some of us were hoping for an early end to the cruel summer of ’22, but “no rest for the weary.”
The first couple days of September brought us a little rain and a brief break in the heat but that was “all she wrote.” (Max allows me two cliches’ per 500 words, so I’ve already hit my limit.)
September was exceptionally hot and dry until the last few days of the month. The average high during the month was 92, three degrees hotter than normal. During the last nine days leading up to the cold front on the 25th Denton had 9 days in a row with highs at or above 95, including 99 degrees on the 22nd and 25th. The average low of 66 was just half a degree warmer than the normal average low of 65.5. The coolest overnight lows, (prior to the cold front on the 25th), were 58 degrees on the 10th, 56 on the 12th and 59 on the 15th.
Why was the average low nearly on target while the average high was over 3 degrees hotter? Dry air.
That brings us to September’s pitifully low rainfall of just 2/10ths of an inch as of the 25th. Even when the cold front struggled south, a couple heavy storms developed just barely south of Denton. What luck. So far this year, Denton Enterprise Airport has recorded only 15.36 inches of rain.
No severe weather was reported in Denton County during September, but 1” hail was reported in Haslet in northern Tarrant County on September 4th, and most of North Texas had gusty winds from storms on the 4th and 5th of the month.
The hot, dry weather was due to another strong surface high that settled over Texas and much of the South for most of September. The brief break in late August was all too brief.
The summertime high pressure bubbles even helped to suppress tropical weather development in the Gulf of Mexico for the first three months of the Hurricane season. Despite its late start, we may see a big finish. All the stored up solar energy in the Gulf of Mexico has pushed water temperatures well into the 80’s. Any storm that develops or tracks into the Gulf will have lots of warm water to work with.
The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting October to be warmer and drier than normal as excessive drought and heat tend to perpetuate each other. As they say, “If you don’t like the weather here, just wait five months and it’ll change.” Sooner, we hope.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday accused the West of sabotaging Russia-built natural gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea to Germany, a charge vehemently denied by the United States and its allies. Nordic nations said the undersea blasts that damaged the pipelines this week and have led to huge methane leaks involved several hundred pounds of explosives.
The claim by Putin came ahead of an emergency meeting Friday at the U.N. Security Council in New York on the attacks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, and as Norwegian researchers published a map projecting that a huge plume of methane from the damaged pipelines will travel over large swaths of the Nordic region.
Speaking Friday in Moscow at a ceremony to annex four regions of Ukraine into Russia, Putin claimed that “Anglo-Saxons” in the West have turned from imposing sanctions on Russia to “terror attacks,” sabotaging the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in what he described as an attempt to “destroy the European energy infrastructure.”
He added that “those who profit from it have done it,” without naming a specific country.
In Washington, U.S. President Joe Biden dismissed Putin’s pipeline claims as outlandish.
“It was a deliberate act of sabotage. And now the Russians are pumping out disinformation and lies. We will work with our allies to get to the bottom (of) precisely what happened,” Biden promised, adding that divers would be sent down to inspect the pipelines. “Just don’t listen to what Putin’s saying. What he’s saying we know is not true.”
U.S. officials said the Putin claim was trying to shift attention from his annexation Friday of parts of Ukraine.
“We’re not going to let Russia’s disinformation distract us or the world from its transparently fraudulent attempt to annex sovereign Ukrainian territory,” White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said Friday.
Moscow says it wants a thorough international probe to assess the damage to the pipelines, which were filled with gas but not supplying it to Europe. Putin’s spokesman has said “it looks like a terror attack, probably conducted on a state level.”
European nations, which have been reeling under soaring energy prices caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have noted that it is Russia, not Europe, that benefits from chaos in the energy markets and spiking prices for energy.
The U.S. has long opposed to the two pipelines and had repeatedly urged Germany to halt them, saying they increased Europe’s energy dependence on Russia and decreased its security. Since the war in Ukraine began in February, Russia has cut back supplies of natural gas sent to Europe to heat homes, generate electricity and run factories. European leaders have accused Putin of using “energy blackmail” to divide them in their strong support for Ukraine.
Russia stopped gas flows through the 1,224-kilometer (760-mile) long Nord Stream 1 earlier this month, blaming technical problems, while the parallel Nord Stream 2 pipeline had never opened.
Denmark and Sweden, meanwhile, said Friday that the explosions that rocked the Baltic Sea ahead of the huge methane leaks from the pipelines “probably corresponded to an explosive load of several hundred kilos (pounds).”
The leaks occurred in international waters and ”have caused plumes of gas rising to the surface,” the two Scandinavian countries wrote in a letter to the United Nations.
NATO has warned it would retaliate for any attacks on the critical infrastructure of its 30 member countries and joined other Western officials in citing sabotage as the likely cause of damage. Denmark is a NATO member, and Sweden is in the process of joining the military alliance. Both say the pipelines were deliberately attacked.
At the U.N., Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council while neither Sweden or Denmark will be represented at the meeting Friday as they are not members.
The Integrated Carbon Observation System, a European research alliance, said “an enormous amount of methane gas has been released into the atmosphere” from the damaged pipelines, about the amount of a whole year’s methane emissions for a city the size of Paris or a country like Denmark.
“We assume the wind on the leak area blew the methane emissions north to the Finnish archipelago, then (the emissions) bend toward Sweden and Norway,” said Stephen Platt, a professor with the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, part of the group.
The data was gathered from ground-based observations in Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Experts say these methane levels aren’t dangerous to public health but are a potent source of global warming.
The suspected sabotage has produced two methane leaks off Sweden, including a large one above Nord Stream 1 and a smaller one above Nord Stream 2, and two leaks off Denmark.
The Nord Stream 2 leak “has diminished, but is still ongoing,” the Swedish coast guard said, increasing its warnings for ships to stay 7 nautical miles (13 kilometers, 8 miles) from the blast areas.
Nordic seismologists recorded explosions preceding the leaks. A first explosion was recorded early Monday southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm. A second, stronger blast northeast of the island hit that night and was equivalent to a magnitude-2.3 earthquake.
Denmark and Sweden also said they were worried about the blasts’ “possible impact on the maritime life in the Baltic Sea.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she would travel to London to discuss the gas leaks with British Prime Minister Liz Truss. She then will travel to Brussels to raise the issue with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and European Council President Charles Michel.
The attacks on the pipelines have prompted energy companies and European governments to beef up security around energy infrastructure.
The fear of further damage to Europe’s energy infrastructure has added pressure on natural gas prices, which are already high and have caused widespread economic pain across the continent.
Authorities in Norway, a major oil and gas producer, have reported at least six drone sightings near offshore installations in the North Sea, prompting the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway to “urge increased vigilance.” Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet said a drone was spotted Wednesday near a Danish offshore oil and gas installation in the North Sea.
Sweden has also stepped up security around its three nuclear power plants.

Imagine dedicating your career to health and wellness and finishing your sixth half marathon with a PR (personal record), feeling unstoppable. That was me in November 2021.
Then everything changed.
The list of warning signs was long but I didn’t think anything of it because I was so active. I was teaching indoor cycling three to four times per week and training for a half marathon. What seemed normal at the time was just the beginning of my body shutting down.
Constantly being thirsty, tired, losing weight, fatigued, anxious, and experiencing changes in mood. But I was working out a lot. I thought my symptoms made sense.
I was scheduled for a routine doctor visit in January 2022. She asked me if I had any concerns. I told her my symptoms and she thought it would be a good idea to get some blood work done.
They called me on a Sunday afternoon.
“I need you to come in, you have diabetes.”
When you dedicate your career to helping others and practicing a healthy lifestyle you never think you will hear those words. Diabetes?!
My A1c was off the chart. My doctor didn’t know how I wasn’t in the ER and only one thing came to mind. Movement saved my life. Being so active at that point was a true miracle. It kept my body out of crisis mode and kept me going with enough time to catch the rest of the warning signs.
From that moment, I wondered what would be next. The highs, the lows, the work. I questioned if I would be able to teach anymore or even go on a run.
I took a few weeks off but then I got back on the bike and taught my first class. Feeling the movement that kept me here meant more than ever. I stumbled across a post one day from Beyond Type One about their NYC Marathon Team. I read the incredible stories of others fighting the same fight and was inspired by each of their stories. These people were just like me and many lived with type 1 for so much longer.
I thought to myself “wow wouldn’t that be amazing to run a whole marathon with type 1.”
And so now I am.
This journey has changed my entire outlook on being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
At first, I was angry, sad and it felt unfair. But each run I am reminded of how strong my body is. It brought me here and kept me strong enough to get through pre-diagnosis.
Movement can heal your mind, your energy, and your perspective. I now find more gratitude and grace in each step I take. Movement has healed me.
This January will be one year of living with type 1 and for me, training for the NYC Marathon has helped me overcome my diagnosis.
I am honored to run alongside 49 others living with T1D and to cross the finish line for the millions of others fighting.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says he is “not aware” of the team having breached Formula 1’s budget cap, amid reports they could be penalised for over-spending during the 2021 campaign.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff later described Horner’s comments as “funny”, and said the alleged breaches are a “heavyweight issue” that will have implications on results from the three world championships from 2021-2023.
The sport introduced a budget cap last season, and reports claim Red Bull are one of two teams who the FIA will announce went over the $145m (£114m) spending limit, with an official announcement expected on October 5.
Potential punishment for the teams found to have breached the regulations could range from financial penalties to points deduction, with the categorisation of the infringement as ‘minor’ or ‘material’ the crucial factor.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after opening practice at the Singapore GP on Friday, Horner responded to a topic that is threatening to overshadow the sport’s first visit to the Marina Bay Street Circuit since 2019.
“We are certainly not aware of any (breaches),” Horner said. “The accounts were all submitted way back in March, so it’s been a long process with the FIA going through, and we are in that process as we speak.

“They are rightly following that process and I think mid-next week is when they declare their certificates.
“Certainly our submission was below the cap and it’s down to the FIA to follow their process, which they are currently doing.”
Horner also described the regulations as “immature”, and said that the interpretation and application of them would be “subjective”.
The rules provide a range of sanctions that can be applied based on the amount by which teams have exceeded the cap.
These include fines for minor offences, while material offences could result in a deduction of points from the drivers’ and teams’ standings, suspension and exclusion from the championship.
The FIA released a statement before Horner spoke to Sky Sports F1 on Friday, insisting any breaches would be “dealt with” according to the regulations.
The statement said: “The FIA is currently finalising the assessment of the 2021 financial data submitted by all Formula 1 teams. Alleged breaches of the Financial Regulations, if any, will be dealt with according to the formal process set out in the regulations.”

“It’s funny that Christian (Horner) has said that because it has been weeks and months that they’ve been being investigated,” said Wolff. “So maybe he doesn’t speak to his CFO (chief financial officer).
“All of us have been investigated diligently and, as far as we understand, there is a team is in minor breach, which is more procedural, and another team that is fundamentally massively over and that is still being looked after. That is an open secret in the paddock.

Amid their domination of the 2022 season, there has been speculation in recent weeks that Red Bull have developed a new lightweight chassis, that could further their advantage over their rivals.
Speaking ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Verstappen said, perhaps in jest, that he had made a deal with his team that if he won the previous race in Monza (which he did) with their heavier version of the chassis, he would continue to use it at this race.
Wolff referenced the rumoured development as he continued his criticism, citing the knock-on effects over-spending in 2021 may have had.

Speaking separately to BBC Sport, Wolf added: “It is of huge importance for a demonstration that these regulations are policed and I have no reason to believe otherwise.
“The FIA, particularly Mohammed (Ben Sulayem), has shown a pretty robust stance on enforcing all kinds of regulations. So if we are talking now about something big, he will show the same integrity and leadership that he has done before.”
Later, in an interview with PA, Wolff, who spoke directly to Ben Sulayem on Friday night, added: “I don’t know by how much Red Bull have overshot, and where, and what that means as a consequence for last year’s championship, this year’s championship and next year’s championship.
“The catalogue of potential penalties is huge. And the independent judges will come to their conclusions.
“We have had a massive restructuring process in the organisation to save $50m, and it has been overwhelming, distracting and a development deterrent. If somebody has been challenging that system, it is a major difference between
winning and finishing third.
“We are 10 kilos overweight at the moment, and that is three tenths of a second. For $2m, we could have taken 10 kilos out, and produced two lighter chassis so we are talking about a second or more in performance.
“I have seen Mohammed act on regulations, minor or major, and what I like in the new system, whether it is Ferrari or Mercedes, is that they just follow the regulations. The FIA will do the right thing, and judge what the impact of such a breach was.”

Fashion is being democratized — and its future is virtual and moving to the metaverse.
“The world’s next Coco Chanel might be a young, 10-year-old, 8-year-old girl designing clothes in Roblox,” Cathy Hackl, chief metaverse officer and co-founder of innovation and design consulting company Journey said in a discussion at this week’s virtual MetaBeat event.
Fashion and technology are converging in both physical and virtual spaces, she said — and this isn’t only changing who is a fashion designer, but who can say they are one.
“It’s truly amazing to watch fashion and art pushing the limits of what we can do with this technology,” said Hackl. “It’s this moment and this feeling in the tech industry and the fashion industry of coming closer together than ever before.”
For instance, Journey helped Walmart build Walmart Land and Walmart’s University of Play, two “new immersive experiences” within Roblox. The retail giant announced the new virtual endeavors this week, describing them as “bringing to life the best of Walmart’s ‘isles’ in a virtual world.”
“Walmart Land will bring the best fashion, style, beauty and entertainment items directly to the global Roblox community of over 52 million daily users,” the company announced in a blog post. “The retailer will continue to bring the fun with Walmart’s Universe of Play — the ultimate virtual toy destination in Roblox, just in time for those oh-so-real holiday wish lists.”
Users can explore a virtual store of merchandise, or “verch” for their avatars, ride Ferris wheels and play games and participate in competitions to earn tokens and badges. There’s also an “Electric Island” music festival with an interactive piano walkway, a dance challenge, a Netflix trivia experience with actor Noah Schnapp and a DJ booth where users can learn to mix different beats. This will host an “Electric Fest” in October, a motion-capture concert featuring artists Madison Beer, Kane Brown and YUNGBLUD.
Meanwhile, a “House of Style” will offer products from af94, UOMA by Sharon C., ITK by Brooklyn and Bailey, Lottie London and Bubble, and will feature a virtual dressing room, a strike-a-pose challenge, a cosmetics obstacle course and a roller-skating rink.
This entrance of one of the world’s largest companies into the metaverse is nothing less than a landmark event, said Hackl.
“It’s the Fortune 1, massive retailer entering the space in a way that feels organic and well done,” she said.
Making the impossible, possible
Meanwhile, Amsterdam-based digital fashion platform Fabricant Studio debuted its first collection in November; Hackl participated by co-creating the “Godmother of the metaverse gown.”
“It was a beautiful moment for me,” she said, as she never dreamed that she could ever design couture.
The metaverse is “making the impossible possible, making the unthinkable completely at your fingertips,” agreed Sasha Wallinger, head of Web3 and metaverse strategy at Journey.
Wallinger described a “fashion language” of thinking several seasons ahead, ‘breaking to build’ and experimenting — much like the evolving metaverse experience.
The metaverse is “a new tool, a new mechanism of taking a risk, but having a really high reward in that risk,” she said. “It’s really truly bringing the fun back to that creative experience, that marketing journey.”
No doubt, marketing and sales can often become stale, she said, but the metaverse is reinventing and innovating branding and development.
And, while that can be about building “beautiful worlds” of gaming, it can also include building communities and events as Walmart has, Hackl pointed out.
No doubt, the metaverse is still being built itself, and much like the World Wide Web, it’s unclear how it will take shape, morph and evolve.
“Will we call it metaverse in 10 years? I don’t know,” said Hackl. But in any case, “in the metaverse, we are all world builders and now is our time to build.”

A poll of 800 likely midterm voters in four U.S. swing states suggested that the overwhelming majority favored ideas around decentralization, and many were HODLers.
According to a Sept. 29 report from venture capital firm Haun Ventures on a survey conducted by business intelligence company Morning Consult, roughly one in five voters polled in New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Pennsylvania said they owned cryptocurrency or nonfungible tokens. In addition, 91% of respondents supported a “community owned, community governed” internet that “gives people greater control over their information.”

“Significantly, and reflective of how the values that voters associate with Web3 will drive electoral behavior, voters are less likely to support candidates perceived as standing in the way of a decentralized internet,” said Haun Ventures. “In other words, as both parties consider how good Web3 policy will translate into good politics, the values of Web3 are what voters want to see elected officials supporting, not standing in the way of.”

The survey noted that the voters polled leaned slightly Democratic, but promoting a decentralized and democratized internet seemed to be a bipartisan issue, with both sides having “limited faith in the government’s ability” to regulate Web3. Haun Ventures reported that 55% of voters surveyed would be less likely to vote for political candidates who opposed internet decentralization policies, while 72% of HODLers in the poll said they owned digital assets “because they want an economic system that is more democratized, fair, and works for more people.”
“This poll makes it clear that in these swing states, Web3 Voters now represent a significant cohort of the middle class electorate, and are younger and more diverse than the population as a whole.”

Morning Consult conducted the survey from Sept. 15–20. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) today announced the resolution of a complaint of racial harassment filed against Peoria Unified School District in Arizona.
OCR determined that the district failed to address harassment of students on the basis of race, color, and national origin, in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and its implementing regulations.
Peer harassment included race-based slurs, such as targeting the n-word and “ching chong” at students, mocking police killings of Black people, pulling eyes back to mock Asian students, mimicking “Heil Hitler” salutes, drawing Swastikas on photographs of students’ faces on notebooks and in a bathroom, and saying Black people “do not deserve to live” and “should die,” a student’s skin looked like “burnt” food, and that a student should “go back to [their] country” and “eat dog.”
Harassment by employees involved repeated touching of and comments exclusively about a Black student’s hair. The persistent, pervasive, and severe harassment and the district’s ineffective response caused significant and enduring academic, social, and emotional harm to the student who was the subject of the OCR complaint. Moreover, OCR found that a schoolwide hostile environment existed because at least a dozen other students of color at the school were likewise harassed based on race, color, or national origin by numerous peers.
Although administrators and teachers at the school were aware of widespread harassment, the district repeatedly responded ineffectively, or not at all, to reported harassment, allowing the harassment to continue on a consistent basis and to create a school-level hostile environment. The district also did not offer any supports or remedies to students who were harassed. As a result of these failures,
OCR determined that the district permitted students of color to be subjected to a hostile environment based on their race, color, or national origin that was sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it interfered with – or could have reasonably interfered with – their ability to participate in or benefit from the school’s program.
The resolution agreement commits the district to take steps to ensure nondiscrimination based on race, color, and national origin in its education programs and activities.
“Every student in every school deserves to learn free from discriminatory harassment,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon. “Peoria Unified School District today commits to come into compliance with longstanding federal civil rights requirements, ensuring that district students learn without discrimination based on race or national origin.”
The district’s commitments in the voluntary resolution agreement include:
Providing supports and remedies, where appropriate, to students who were subjected to peer harassment based on race, color, or national origin at the school.
Conducting a climate assessment that examines the prevalence of harassment at the school, the hostile environment created by the widespread harassment, the school’s and district’s handling of reports of harassment, and measures for reducing harassment at the school and for improving the district’s response to reports of harassment.
Issuing an anti-harassment statement and issuing a notice to parents about identifying and reporting harassment and about how the district is expected to respond.
Reviewing, revising, and disseminating policies, forms, and record-keeping procedures related to harassment based on race, color, and national origin.
Training staff about legal requirements under Title VI, reporting and responding to harassment, prohibited retaliation, cultural competency, and implicit bias. And,
Providing developmentally appropriate educational programs about how to recognize and report racial harassment for school students.

At its core, the art of graffiti celebrates the mashing together of different styles, ideas, cultures, and techniques. Which is exactly what restaurant owner, Anthony Morel, hopes to convey with Graffiti Pasta located in Denton Square. Graffiti Pasta combines his traditional Italian family recipes with some of his other loves – color, style, and the craft bar industry – to bring a unique take on Italian food.
One of the first things we noticed when walking into Graffiti Pasta (besides all of the incredible color, art, and graffiti on the walls and furniture) were the CHOPSTICKS on the tables….? Who needs chopsticks at an Italian restaurant? So, we asked Anthony about it and he told us that’s one of the “graffiti” ideas included in the restaurant. In college he used to keep a big bowl of cold pasta in his fridge and would use takeout chopsticks to eat it during study breaks, for a late-night snack, etc. So why not bring that unique idea to a restaurant full of other unique ideas?
Another one of Anthony’s unique takes is his Mean Green Lasagna which is based off of his grandmother’s chicken lasagna recipe and a green pesto lasagna that he loves from his travels to Italy. Combine that with operating in “Mean Green territory,” and you’ve got the Mean Green Lasagna!

As we were walking around the restaurant talking to other customers, we met customers who have already become regulars in the 4 short months since Anthony opened as well as customers who, like us, were experiencing Graffiti Pasta for the first time. But all the feedback was the same – this food is delicious!
To start, Anthony brought us the Calabrese Caprese made with heirloom cherry tomatoes, smoked mozzarella balls, house made pesto, a balsamic reduction drizzle, and some calabrese chili oil giving it that signature Graffiti differentiator from any other caprese salad you’ve had before.
One of Graffiti Pasta’s best sellers is a dish Anthony actually thought would never take off – the Tortellini La Flor. This dish is made with a tri-color cheese tortellini tossed in a bright lemon alfredo sauce and comes garnished with edible flowers, which is the part Anthony was sure no one would go for or appreciate. But people love that he’s incorporated his experience and love of being a bartender and craft cocktails into this pasta dish and the lemon alfredo sauce is so unique and delicious!
We also got to try what Anthony says is the dish that started it all – the Rasta Pasta which is a fettuccine tossed with jerk-flavored alfredo sauce, tri-colored bell peppers, and jerk-seasoned pulled chicken. This one was AWESOME. And was a favorite of all of ours. Awesome jerk flavor complimented by the creaminess of the alfredo.
But perhaps the most special menu item of all is the cheesecake which is made by Anthony’s mother using their family’s recipe that Anthony grew up getting to enjoy just twice a year, for his birthday and Christmas. Now he’s convinced his mom to quit her job and make cheesecakes for him so that he can enjoy it whenever he wants. Genius!
We did mention that most of Anthony’s restaurant experience comes from behind the bar, so it’s no surprise that he also put a lot of thought into what drinks he’d serve at the bar here at Graffiti Pasta. One of Anthony’s favorite Italian cockatils is a Negroni, so he’s incorporated a classic Negroni as well as a few of his own unique creations inspired by family members.
This was such a fun adventure for us to get up to Denton Square and check out Graffiti Pasta. We’re so glad we had the opportunity to meet Anthony and experience his vision for bringing lots of different worlds together to share his love for his Italian heritage and culture. There’s so much care and thought that has gone into every aspect of Graffiti Pasta and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself!

Here’s a breakdown of their value at several airlines and hotel brands

This has been an unusual year for currencies, period. Rising inflation has sent all sorts of costs skyrocketing (including travel prices). Meanwhile, the euro and British pound are falling in value relative to the U.S. dollar, making a European vacation somewhat … affordable?
With all of these fluctuating prices, how are the currencies of airline and hotel loyalty programs, better known as points and miles, being affected?
To get to the bottom of that question, NerdWallet turned to the data. The results of our annual analysis of the value of airline miles and hotel points is finally here, and it has some interesting stories to tell.
To get our estimates, we collect real-world data on thousands of flights and hotel stays and compare cash prices and award prices to determine the baseline value of each loyalty program’s points.
Here’s how the value of miles and points compares to last year — and what changes you should make to your travel rewards strategy as a result.

Most airline miles are worth more
The good news is that almost all points and miles are worth more now than they were last year, possibly due in part to inflation, which has driven up the cash prices of flights and hotel nights.
Airline miles are now worth an additional 0.1 cent-0.3 cents in value across the board. For example, United Airlines (UAL) MileagePlus miles were worth about 1 cent each in our last analysis, so 50,000 miles should have been able to get you a free flight worth about $500. If you didn’t use those miles last year, those same 50,000 miles are now worth 1.2 cents each. That means you can likely redeem them for a flight worth about $600 today.
Keep in mind though, inflation has driven travel prices much higher. According to the latest set of Consumer Price Index data, airfare prices are up 33% year-over-year in August. Meanwhile, the valuations of airline miles are up only 8.7% on average from last year. So even though your miles are valued higher, you might still have to shell out more miles for a flight than you would have last year because the flight itself is likely more expensive.

Hotel points-wise, one brand stands out
Hotel points saw a similar increase to airlines exacerbated by inflation. But there is one huge jump that stands out: World of Hyatt (H).
Hyatt has long been a favorite of travelers because of its high value redemptions, and it has consistently had higher valuations than other hotel loyalty programs. Its fixed award chart has further cemented its value in this high-inflation year.
This year, Hyatt’s valuation jumped almost an entire cent, from 1.9 cents per point in 2021 to 2.8 cents per point now. That means its points are four times as valuable as competitors’ like Marriott Bonvoy (MAR)( 0.7 cent), Hilton (HLT) Honors (0.6 cent) and IHG (IHG.LN) One Rewards. (0.7 cent).
This discrepancy is likely due to Hyatt being the only hotel loyalty program with the aforementioned fixed award chart. The award chart specifies a limit for the highest number of points a night can cost at a certain property, even if the cash rate may go much higher. That’s where you’ll find Hyatt sweet spots.

How you might change your points and miles strategy
Based on our findings, there are a few key takeaways to remember as you book travel into 2023.
Consider flying airlines besides Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways. Last year, JetBlue (JBLU) and Southwest (LUV) had the highest-value airline miles, around 1.5 and 1.4 cents respectively. Now, American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), JetBlue and Southwest miles are all worth the same — around 1.5 cents. If loyalty with American or Delta is more convenient for you, start collecting their miles knowing that you’ll get about the same return.
Target high-value transfer partners. If you have a travel credit card that earns transferable points, you might spend less points by transferring to a high-value partner like Hyatt instead of booking a Hyatt hotel through the credit card’s travel portal.

Calculate the value of your redemption before you book. NerdWallet’s valuations are a baseline value, meaning you should aim to get that value when you cash in your points for a free flight or hotel stay. But not all redemptions are created equal. Make sure you divide the equivalent cash price of the flight or hotel by the number of points they want to charge you. If that number is lower than NerdWallet’s valuations, you might want to save your points for a better redemption. You can use an airline miles calculator to simplify your calculations.

While Congress is poised to avert a government shutdown today by passing a short-term funding bill through December, it will fail to include a pathway to free healthy school meals for all students, a key priority of the Biden administration’s recently unveiled National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. It also gave a cold shoulder to efforts to extend government oversight to a host of under-regulated product categories such as dietary supplements and diagnostic tests.
For over two years, schools nationwide have provided free breakfast and lunch to all students as part of the federal COVID-19 response. That policy ended in August and now, in most states, families must meet strict income guidelines (under $36,000 for a family of four) in order to qualify for a free school meal. Children living in poverty at the cusp of eligibility are no longer able to receive a free healthy school meal, and even eligible children may go hungry at school if their families don’t know they now have to apply or if the systems in place to identify eligible children fail. Before the pandemic, students who accrued debt on their school meal accounts were given a cold alternative meal or singled out in other stigmatizing ways until their balance was paid. Without Congressional action, these inhumane practices could resume.
Congress can and must do better by kids, and that starts with what they eat at school. When the short-term funding bill expires at the end of the year, an extension of healthy school meals for all must be included. In the same vein, Congress has the opportunity to pass a Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill to extend this policy permanently.
The funding deal also failed to make changes to how the Food and Drug Administration protects our food, dietary supplements, and healthcare products. Every five years, Congress must re-authorize a set of “user fees” from industry that help fund the agency. Typically, industry uses the occasion of this “must-pass” legislation to insert industry-friendly measures such as expedited paths to market for new branded pharmaceuticals, or various incentives to make drug development more profitable.
This year, the user fee package was different. It included useful provisions designed to help consumers by ensuring access to safe and reliable products. Republicans in Congress now see the virtue of a “clean” user fee bill, stripped of any measures beyond reauthorization itself. We urged Congress to pass legislation that would have ensured that Americans had access to safe dietary supplements, accurate diagnostic tests used in clinical medicine, a safe and reliable supply of infant formula and other essential medical foods, and food packaging free of harmful PFAS chemicals. Instead, Congress will extend FDA user fee programs for the next five years without these important public health measures. Lawmakers must revisit these protections in the next funding package after the short-term extension expires in December.
