UFC Fighter El Ninja To Become First Argentinian Athlete Paid In Crypto – Cointelegraph https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/ufc-fighter-el-ninja-to-become-first-argentinian-athlete-paid-in-crypto-cointelegraph/ Beyond the Octagon, Guido Cannetti fights Argentina’s 78% inflation rate with USDC stablecoin. 782 Total views 33 Total shares Guido Cannetti, an Argentinian Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter, is now the first martial arts athlete in the country to receive 100% of his salary in stablecoins, amid rising inflation and Argentina’s economic deteriorating, announced the crypto payroll company Bitwage on Monday. Dubbed El Ninja, he returns to the Octagon on October 1st in the United States to face the local fighter Randy Costa. According to Bitwage, Guido will receive his payment in USDC stablecoin via the Stellar Network on Vibrant, a wallet application developed by the Stellar team specifically for Argentines experiencing inflation. As per official government figures’, inflation in the 12 months through August was 78.5% in the country, whereas prices in the first eight months of the year were up 56.4%. Argentina’s central bank predicted a 95% inflation rate for the year, while some private analysts forecasted a 100% inflation rate in 2022. “I am getting paid in USDC because it is safer for my future,” said Cannetti in a statement released by Bitwage, noting that stablecoins will spare him from the volatility and devaluation of local currency. Among Argentine consumers surveyed by Americas Market Intelligence in April, 51% purchased crypto and 27% regularly bought cryptocurrencies, up from 12% adoption at the end of 2021. Inflation protection is the primary reason for 67% of respondents’ purchases of cryptocurrencies. US dollar-pegged stablecoin prices surged in July following Martin Guzman’s abrupt resignation as Economy Minister. His fiscal policies aimed at reducing budget deficits and tightening monetary policy divided opinions in Argentina’s government. In the country’s black-market, the exchange rate was at 287 pesos per dollar at press time, according to the website DolarHoy.

US Sees Increase In Respiratory Infections That Can Lead To Paralysis In Children, CDC Data Shows – CNN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/us-sees-increase-in-respiratory-infections-that-can-lead-to-paralysis-in-children-cdc-data-shows-cnn/ 02:57 – Source: CNN Survivor of rare polio-like illness shares her story CNN  —  Doctors should prepare for a possible increase in young patients with enterovirus D68, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday, and that may be linked to more cases of the rare, paralyzing condition acute flaccid myelitis. There was an increase in acute respiratory illnesses and emergency department visits driven by rhinovirus and enterovirus in children and adolescents this summer, new CDC data shows. The rise might be more specifically attributed to enterovirus D68, which, in rare cases, can lead to acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM. “Health care facilities should be prepared for possible increases in pediatric health care use associated with severe EV-D68-associated respiratory illness,” the CDC said Tuesday in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. “Past increases in EV-D68 circulation were also associated with increased reports of AFM.” AFM causes weakness and paralysis of the arms and legs. The CDC has detected increases in enterovirus D68 every two years or so, and this month, the agency warned doctors to be on the lookout for infections. The virus tends to peak in the late summer and early fall. The data shows that positive test results for rhinovirus/enterovirus “appears to be increasing at a rate comparable to that in past EV-D68 outbreak years,” doubling in a period of a few weeks through early September, the CDC said. “In 2014, a widespread EV-D68 outbreak in the United States caused similar increases in medically attended severe respiratory illnesses and asthma exacerbations and was associated with an increase in AFM cases,” the report says. In addition to testing for AFM, health care providers are urged to test for poliovirus in people suspected of having AFM because of the similarity in symptoms. Enterovirus D68 causes symptoms that mirror those of common colds, with cough, shortness of breath, wheezing and sometimes fever. It requires doctors to take extra steps to diagnose.

A Lifetime Of Moments Part Two Warwick Beacon
A Lifetime Of Moments, Part Two – Warwick Beacon https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/a-lifetime-of-moments-part-two-warwick-beacon/ For my obituary, I want to be remembered for the small moments which have accumulated to form my life’s mosaic.  Hubby and I married when we were young, and, characteristically, got married over the October holiday so we would have the extra Monday off for our honeymoon in the cape before returning to our jobs.  Later that year, while visiting a friend who lived in Hollywood, California, I was chosen to be on the game show “All Star Secrets”, with Bob Eubanks as the host.  The premise included a panel of four “stars” and a disclosed secret.  The panelists, including me wearing a bright yellow shirt and broad grin, would have to guess which star the secret was about.  Having watched the show, I knew that the secret always belonged to the least likely candidate. The winning question was something like “This star always felt awkward as a child and did not socialize well.” The anti-answer was staring me in the face, Jed Allen, a star of the soap opera “The Days of our Lives” who appeared to be very sociable and graceful.  Of course, everyone was amazed that a man of his stature had ever felt awkward, and I won the show, which included a fifteen-day trip to five islands of Hawaii and $2600 in cash. It was this trip which Hubby and I used as our honeymoon, and we enjoyed every ocean wave, waterfall, luau, and volcanic tour made available to us.  Traveling the country, which was done as a child, morphed into international travel with my mother after my father passed away.  To him, traveling meant driving the Volkswagen van on the small, windy roads across America.  To my mother, it meant being on foreign soil truly experiencing a different culture, and I was glad to help her spend her money to do so.  (It appears that my father’s cheapness his whole life resulted in a hefty sum left over in their bank account once he passed away.)  On our first trip to Guatemala, we stayed in a village inn in Chichicastenango.  Although there was no electricity, we were provided a “manservant” who stood outside our door to light the candles and provide heated bath water.  My mother and I giggled at the thought of such a thing but did feel safe from the marauders who may have been cavorting outside our windows.  On a later trip to Costa Rica, where we stayed at a non-commercialized resort, we had great fun trying to fit in with the locals who had come to the area for a vacation.  Without either of us speaking a word of Spanish, we pointed to the foods we wanted in the Costa Rican buffet, boiled rabbit, gallo pinto (white rice and black beans sauteed in oil with diced onions, sweet peppers, and coriander,) fried plantains, and arroz con pollo, (sauteed rice with shredded chicken and diced vegetables.) On that trip, we went white water rafting, with my mom fully clothed in long pants, socks, sweatshirt, and jacket which became drenched in river. (I have a picture of her looking like a wet rat.) On a trip to England to get son, Francis settled at Cambridge University, my mother and I stood outside Buckingham Palace, in the rain, and she poked me in the eye with her umbrella, all caught by the camera. This confirmed my previously irrational fear that an umbrella could poke me in the eye.  (Fortunately, contrary to my phobia, I did NOT lose an eye.) I got to travel to Belize with my mom and family, and we almost lost son Steven to the alligators behind the ill-fitting fence meant to contain them at the “zoo”.  On a hike up to a shrine in Nicaragua the tour guide warned of impending possible mountain lion attacks.  Exhausted on the uphill trail, my mother lamented, “I hope one attacks me just so I can lay down”. Global travel with my mom defined my adulthood. These enriching, always enjoyable journeys into other countries taught me about the sanctity of life. Seeing that many of the residents we encountered were dirt poor, yet happy and sociable, confirmed that it is not the quantity and quality of possessions that makes one happy.

I Tried Following New Zealand’s Healthy Eating Guidelines And Failed Miserably – Stuff https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/i-tried-following-new-zealands-healthy-eating-guidelines-and-failed-miserably-stuff/ Lyric Waiwiri-Smith is a lifestyle reporter who drinks 3L of water but is not getting her 5+ a day. OPINION: After spending a number of days trying to figure out if plant-based food alternatives count towards our 5+ a day, I was met with a very troubling realisation: I am not eating enough veges. We’ve all been taught the golden 5+ a day rule – eat three vegetables and two fruits a day, and you’ll be on the right track to achieving a healthy lifestyle. As it turns out, the recommendations on eating and living well are a little more complex than shoving greens into your gob. READ MORE: * Energy needs decrease with age, so what you eat is even more important * Are we taking clean eating too far? * Get a healthy gut by eating these three things Lyric Waiwiri-Smith/Stuff My week of following the healthy eating and activity guidelines. The Ministry of Health’s (MoH) Eating and Activity Guidelines contain recommendations for daily servings of grains, proteins, and milk products as well as fruits and veg, and the number of suggested servings differs between gender and age groups. As a 22-year-old female, I’m supposed to work in five servings of vegetables, two of fruit, six servings of grains, two and a half servings of protein, and another two and a half of milk products – every day. Proteins in the MoH’s guidelines include “some legumes, nuts, seeds, fish and other seafood, eggs, poultry and/or red meat with the fat removed.” I’m also meant to limit the amount of salt, saturated fats, and sugar, focus on wholefoods and get in 2.1L of water a day. I tasked myself with the goal of following these guidelines for a week, hoping to transform my life with a government approved way of living. Lyric Waiwiri-Smith/Stuff Chicken salad from a kebab shop – one serving of protein, one serving of grains, and three servings of veg in one meal. A regular day of eating for me would see me get half my recommended veges and grains. My protein serves were fulfilled but my milk product servings would often go overboard. I made it my mission to target whole veges and grains in my meals. I have a tendency to lose my appetite in the middle of the day if I’m stressed or dealing with a busy work day, which means I often skip lunch (although I always have breakfast and dinner). Missing a meal made it near impossible to get in the full list of recommendations. At one point I was so worried about not meeting my daily vegetable intake I ate corn with porridge for breakfast (it actually tasted pretty good). Another day, I counted avocado as part of my veggie serve and didn’t realise until after it’s actually a fruit. Cottage pies and curries became regular menu items as they contained as many as three servings of vegetables and two serves of grain, while smoothies helped me meet my milk, grain, and fruit serves. Lyric Waiwiri-Smith/Stuff Cereal with yoghurt and fruit – one serving of grain, one serving of milk products, and one serving of fruit. While my fruit and vegetables were successfully on the rise, my grains were still lacking. The idea of needing to double my usual intake was easily the most daunting aspect of this healthy eating, and I never managed a day when I ate all six servings. Grains aren’t exactly a food group that is found in abundance in my household. My boyfriend has coeliac disease (he can’t eat gluten) so our pantry only consists of gluten-free pastas and white rice (do gluten-free alternatives have different serving sizes?). It wasn’t just fitting the grains into a meal that caused issues. I deal with frequent painful bloating, and after eating each meal I felt like my stomach was swelling up to the size of a balloon. Unfortunately, the discomfort and bloating didn’t ease up the whole week. Lyric Waiwiri-Smith/Stuff Omelette with bread (not pictured) – one serving of protein, two servings of veg, and two servings of grain. Because I was so focused on veges and grains, I often ignored working milk products into my diet unless it was the yoghurt I paired with my morning cereal. On average, each day of my trial week, I would eat four servings of vegetables, one serving of fruit, three servings of grains, two servings of proteins, and one and a half servings of milk products. There wasn’t a single day when I managed every recommended serving from every food group. Nutritionist Lillian Morton says the MoH base their guidelines on a wide range of research to see how our portion sizes in food groups can improve our health. “It’s based on a whole truck load of research that they’ve pulled together and said, ‘if you do this, this will keep you healthy’.” Lyric Waiwiri-Smith/Stuff Chicken curry with rice and veges- one serving of proteins, two servings of veg, and one a half serving of grains. Morton suggests my method of suddenly increasing servings may have stressed out my gut. “The gut is quite a complicated organism, so when you eat a lot of something there are all these receptors in the stomach and the gut that your body regulates,” Morton says. “When you don’t eat a lot of grains, and you suddenly introduce new foods to your diet, your stomach actually takes a while to recalibrate. “Whole grains have a lot of fibre, and fibre is amazing for the gut, but it does make you feel bloated because it ferments in the large intestine. You’ve also added more fibre with the fruit and veg, so you’ve got way more fibre and that takes a lot of digestion. “It does come right, it’s just how your body works … you get a bit symptomatic and think ‘grains don’t agree with me’ rather than just persisting. “Going from nothing to a hundred is quite a lot for the gut to deal with. Maybe go for three grain serves and two vegetable serves if you’re starting from nothing, and then increase it slowly.” She says her simple hack to sneak more whole foods into our diets is to make every meal colourful. “My phrase is ‘touch the rainbow, be the rainbow’, so include colour at every meal,” Morton says. “Many Kiwis have what I call a ‘beige diet’ – pasta and mince, bangers and mash – it’s just about adding some berries to your breakfast, having some salad ingredients in your sandwiches and wraps, adding mixed veges if you’re having tuna and rice. Just try to have colour at every meal.”

Brett Favre Scandal Explained: The Ex-NFL QB Is Accused Of Misusing Of Mississippi State Welfare Funds – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/brett-favre-scandal-explained-the-ex-nfl-qb-is-accused-of-misusing-of-mississippi-state-welfare-funds-cbs-sports/ Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre is in hot water for his connection in the Mississippi welfare scandal involving the misappropriation of roughly $77 million. Favre — who has not been criminally charged — has denied knowing that the money he received for different projects was welfare money, but court filings and text messages have shed new light on the situation.  The scandal is Mississippi’s largest-ever public corruption case. It involves money from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, a federal program that provides grant funds to states and territories to help families in need. According to the benefits.gov website, “state-administered programs may include childcare assistance, job preparation, and work assistance.” On Sept. 22, former Executive Director of Mississippi Department of Human Services John Davis pleaded guilty for one count of conspiracy and one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. The Department of Justice said Davis worked with four unnamed co-conspirators. Davis will be sentenced on Feb. 2, 2023.  “MDHS provided federal funds to two nonprofit organizations and then directed the two nonprofit organizations to fraudulently award contracts to various entities and individuals for social services that were never provided,” read the release. The two nonprofits were the Mississippi Community Education Center (MCEC) and the Family Resource Center (FRC), as stated by a press release by State Auditor Shad White’s office from Oct. 2021. The two organizations ran a statewide program called Families First for Mississippi. In the summer of 2021, Favre began to ask then-Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant for funding for a new volleyball facility at the University of Southern Mississippi — his alma matter and the same school at which his daughter played volleyball.  Text messages from Aug. 3, 2017 show Favre asking MCEC founder Nancy New about privacy regarding payments to him. “If you were to pay me is there anyway the media can find out where it came from and how much?” he asked. She reassured him that the information would not be made public. The next day, she told him that Bryant was on board with their plan. New and her son, Zach, pleaded guilty to 13 felony counts relating to the scandal earlier in 2022. According an audit, Favre was paid $500,000 in December 2017 and $600,000 in June 2018 for appearances and speeches at multiple events that he did not attend. Favre said he filmed commercials for the nonprofit organization and that’s why he was given the money. The auditor later revealed that Favre’s contract stated that he needed to give speeches and a radio advertisement.  Favre gave back the initial payments, but reportedly still owes $228,000 in interest. “Of course the money was returned because I would never knowingly take funds meant to help our neighbors in need, but for Shad White to continue to push out this lie that the money was for no-show events is something I cannot stay silent about,” he tweeted on Oct. 29, 2021. Favre missed the original deadline to pay the interest, which led to the case being turned over to the state attorney general’s office.  The $5 million volleyball stadium was not the only project Favre was interested in. In July 2019, Favre also appeared to want money a new football facility at Southern Miss to help recruit quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Deion Sanders’ son, by luring him with an indoor football facility.  “As I suspected Deion’s son asked where the indoor facility was and I said [we] don’t have one but [we] are hoping to break ground in less than 2 years,” Favre texted Bryant, per ESPN. “Now that will not happen without your help/commitment!!! I know we have the Vball to complete first and I’m asking a lot with that and I believe 100% that if you can get this done Nancy will reach and help many and in the recruiting war [a new indoor practice facility] will give USM[‘s football program] instant credibility and [USM football will] become relevant again.” ESPN reported that Billy Quin, a lawyer representing Bryant, said a court filing shows that Favre “continued to press for state funds, first from DHS and later in a legislative appropriation.” On July 28, 2019, Bryant texted Favre that the use of the funds is “tightly controlled” and that “any improper use could result in violation of Federal Law. Auditors are currently reviewing the use of these funds.” Just over a month later, on Sept. 4, 2019 texts messages show Favre putting more pressure on Bryant. “We are not taking No for an answer! You are a Southern Miss Alumni, and folks need to know you are also a supporter of the University,” Favre wrote. “We are going to get there. This was a great meeting. But we have to follow the law. I am to(o) old for Federal Prison.” Bryant replied, adding an emoji wearing sunglasses.  In April 2022, Mississippi Today reported that Brett Favre briefed Bryant on Prevacus, a pharmaceutical company in which Favre was a top investor in. Per report, the company received $2.15 million from the scheme. Some of the text messages obtained by Mississippi Today showed that Prevacus founder Jake Vanlandingham and Favre offered Bryant shares of the company. White ended up naming Bryant as the whistleblower that led to high-profile arrests in the welfare scandal. The Mississippi Department of Human Services filed a lawsuit in May 2022 against Favre, three former pro wrestlers and multiple other people and businesses in an attempt to recover millions in welfare dollars. According to the lawsuit, Ted DiBiase Sr. — a former wrestler known as “The Million Dollar Man” — ran Heart of David Ministries Inc. and received $1.7 million in welfare grant money in 2017 and 2018 for mentorship, marketing and other services. One of his sons, Brett DiBiase, pleaded guilty to his role in the scandal in December of 2020.  Recently, two of Favre’s weekly shows on ESPN Milwaukee and SiriusXM were suspended due to his involvement in the scheme, which dates back to 2017.

Area Residents Classic Album Review: Pink Floyd | Ummagumma Tinnitist
Area Resident’s Classic Album Review: Pink Floyd | Ummagumma – Tinnitist https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/area-residents-classic-album-review-pink-floyd-ummagumma-tinnitist/ When you have a favourite band, sometimes you have records of theirs which you rarely play and don’t enjoy thoroughly enough to spin. I’ve had a love affair with Pink Floyd since 1985 or so. I have all the albums, but there are a few which rarely get played anymore. Still, not only would I never part with them — I’d even consider buying a special edition. It’s an illness. 1969’s Ummagumma is one such album. This was Pink Floyd’s fourth release — a two-record set with both a live album and a studio album. Their previous release was the spotty soundtrack from the film More. Their next project — Atom Heart Mother — would be their first gold record. Ummagumma has gone gold, technically, but that didn’t happen until 1974 and was the direct result of Dark Side Of The Moon’s success. The first thing to notice is the excellent live album begins with the same version of Astronomy Domine as on 1973’s A Nice Pair — a repackaging of the first two albums. Curious. I have no idea why this was done. There could be three reasons: They messed up; they didn’t want to pay former bandleader and principal songwriter Syd Barrett performance royalties; or they preferred this version. No question about it, the live version is incredible. The Ummagumma and A Nice Pair version features the group, but primarily David Gilmour singing the atypical Barrett masterpiece. The live tracks were recorded April 27, 1969 (my father’s 42nd birthday) at Mothers Club in Birmingham. Mothers was a second-floor venue above a pair of shops. Formerly a furniture store and then the Carlton Ballroom, it closed in March 1971. Filling out the rest of Side 1 on Ummagumma is the moody and explosive concert staple Careful With That Axe, Eugene. The song, which was the flipside of single Point Me At The Sky, was never on a studio album. It was issued on the 1971 compilation Relics. Originally called Beset By Creatures Of The Deep, Floyd re-performed the song as Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up for the Zabriskie Point soundtrack in 1970. There’s quite a good live rendition of it in the 1972 French film Pink Floyd at Pompeii. The Ummagumma version is the best one — brooding, gloomy and chill until midway, when the title phrase is spoken by Roger Waters. “Careful, careful… careful with that axe, Eugene,” he says, followed by one of his inimitable long screams, signalling a big drum fill and an extended, explosive jam. It rounds out an absolutely unimpeachable first side of the album. Side 2 begins with another concert staple — one which Waters still performs. Truthfully, as much as teenaged me loved playing the main bass riff, Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun is boring. Originally released on Floyd’s sophomore album A Saucerful Of Secrets, it lumbers along with the type of tiresome, whispered lyrics found in abundance on the More soundtrack. The song would be more effective at twice the speed, or covered by Portishead. But fans love it. I don’t smoke weed, so what do I know? Next (and last) on the live album is the epic Saucerful Of Secrets. Originally titled The Massed Gadgets Of Hercules, the song is broken down into four main sections: Something Else, Syncopated Pandemonium, Storm Signal and Celestial Voices. I’ll break it down for you — it means four minutes of moody malleted cymbals and chimes, followed by a quick, cool drum pattern with squealing guitar and percussion for three minutes, then it chills out for a minute and a half before the final section, which is the best part — a gorgeous Rick Wright organ and Mellotron progression with Gilmour singing the wordless melody overtop. For me, it’s a bit much. Epic, self-indulgent and not musical enough until the final four minutes. The Ummagumma version is just shy of 13 minutes. Seeing it performed is better than hearing it. You can do that, once again, via Pink Floyd At Pompeii. So, the live album is 50/50 for me. Side 1 is amazing. But even though the two tracks on Side 2 are bona fide classic psychedelic Floyd, I don’t ever need to hear them again. On to the studio album … goddamnit. Speaking of self-indulgence, the idea here was for each of the four members to conceive and lead something of their own. The results are mostly awful. It begins with Wright’s epic and boring Sysyphus. Curious spelling. The main melody is an ominous, dark death march which mercifully dissolves into a rather pleasant instrumental piano piece before the playing gets erratic and avant-garde. This is where I typically lift the stylus. The next section is similar, sounding like randomly plucked piano strings in time with kindergarten percussion. It’s annoying. Next there’s a Mellotron and organ bit which starts off quiet and gloomy and gets louder & louder before finally, mercifully, returning to the opening death-march theme. It’s bullshit. The next two tracks are Waters’ contributions. First is the lovely Grantchester Meadows, named after a green space in their hometown of Cambridge. It’s the best song on the studio album. It’s followed by an insane show-and-tell track, the wonderfully named Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict. The “song” has two parts — the beginning is a bunch of simulated rodent and animal sounds, microphone tapping and clicking accompanied by a sort of psychedelic beat-boxing — all performed by Waters. If that wasn’t bonkers enough, it devolves into the final bit — Waters shouting in an exaggerated Scottish burr. I can’t help but wonder what producer Norman Smith made of all this. It’s well-known that while he was The Beatles’ engineer, John Lennon used to call him Normal Smith. So of course when Smith wrote an autobiography he called it John Lennon Called Me Normal. Sigh. This was the last album he produced for the Floyd, for whom he actually has one performance credit — drums on Remember A Day, from Saucerful Of Secrets. Just as producer Jimmy Miller did on The Rolling Stones’ You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Smith stepped in to help a frustrated Nick Mason. Speaking of Mason, Side 4 of Ummagumma features his heinous songwriting contribution to the album — the pretentious, three-part Grand Vizier’s Garden Party. A Vizier, in case you’re wondering, was the highest-ranking political advisor to the Pharaoh in ancient Egypt. The song, which closes out the album, begins with a flute introduction before we are subjected to several minutes of amateur timpani playing. Or, what seems like timpani playing — tuning up and down of some sort of drum — accompanied by cymbal crashes and other toms, the playful tapping of a wood block and lord knows what else — absolutely drenched in reverb to sound like it was performed in a concrete silo. Eat your hearts out, Great Lake Swimmers. It descends into a raucous overdubbing of drum fills before returning to the flutes for the outro. The last side begins with Gilmour’s contribution, the frustrating The Narrow Way. And, of course, it has three parts. I actually really like this piece. It opens with a cool backward effect before jumping right into a soundtrack-sounding multi-tracked acoustic guitar piece with slide overdubs, once again sopping with reverb. Part 2 is a villain-sounding instrumental electric guitar riff set to a jungle beat. This again could be in a soundtrack, perhaps for a monster movie aimed at kids. A giant lizard perhaps. This eventually devolves into noise before Part 3 begins: The only song on the record which sounds like Pink Floyd. Well, 69-72 era soundtrack Floyd. It features an excellent lead vocal by Gilmour and some wonderfully sloppy and loud drum fills. It would have benefitted from a soaring Gilmour guitar solo, but he wasn’t really doing those yet. Nonetheless, this is how the album should have closed. The live album is 4/5 stars, the studio album is 2/5 — so, 3/5 altogether.

Russian Exchanges Ready To Launch International Crypto Payments, Lawmaker Reveals – Exchanges Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/russian-exchanges-ready-to-launch-international-crypto-payments-lawmaker-reveals-exchanges-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ The largest exchanges in Russia are ready to begin operating with cryptocurrencies right after authorities legalize cross-border settlements in crypto, according to a leading member of the Russian parliament. The stock and commodity trading platforms in Moscow and St. Petersburg are working to develop this market, the high-ranking official added. Russia’s Top Exchanges Waiting for Moscow’s Green Light on Cryptocurrency Payments Major Russian exchanges are prepared to start working with cryptocurrencies as soon as government institutions create the legal conditions for crypto settlements, the head of the Financial Market Committee at the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, has announced. Moscow Exchange, St. Petersburg Exchange, and the St. Petersburg International Commodity Exchange are actively working to develop the market and are ready to immediately get involved in the process, since the infrastructure is already there, Anatoly Aksakov said in an interview with Parlamentskaya Gazeta, the official newspaper of the Federal Assembly. Also quoted by the crypto news outlets Bits.media and RBC Crypto, the Russian deputy pointed out that legislation designed to regulate the matter is currently being discussed. The necessary bills can be adopted as early as November, the lawmaker indicated. Russia turned its attention to cryptocurrencies as a way to circumvent financial restrictions imposed by the West over its military invasion of Ukraine. The Russian government now views them as a tool that can ensure uninterrupted cross-border payments. In mid-September, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin ordered the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Russia to elaborate by December a joint position on the federal legislation needed to regulate the issuance and circulation of digital coins, including their mining and use in international settlements. Last week, news came out that the two regulators have already reached a general agreement on a bill authorizing the employment of cryptocurrency in foreign trade deals. Russian media reports also unveiled that financial authorities in Moscow are already developing a mechanism to facilitate such crypto payments. Biden Keeps US Target For Refugee Admissions At 125000 KY3
Biden Keeps US Target For Refugee Admissions At 125000 KY3
Biden Keeps US Target For Refugee Admissions At 125,000 – KY3 https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/biden-keeps-us-target-for-refugee-admissions-at-125000-ky3/ SAN DIEGO (AP) — President Joe Biden on Tuesday kept the nation’s cap on refugee admissions at 125,000 for the 2023 budget year, despite pressure from advocates to raise it even higher to meet the need after falling far short of that target this year. Refugees advocates have been pushing the Biden administration to do more to restore the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. The more than four-decade-old program suffered deep cuts under the Trump administration, which slashed admissions to a record low of 15,000. Biden raised the cap to four times that amount, but so far fewer than 20,000 refugees have been admitted this budget year, which ends Sept. 30. That number excludes the roughly 180,000 Ukrainians and Afghans who came to the United States via a legal process called humanitarian parole that got them into the country more quickly than the traditional refugee program but only allows for stays of up to two years. Refugees are provided a path to permanent residency. Their admissions are determined by the president each year, and federal funding for resettlement agencies is based on the number of people they resettle in a given year. The 125,000 target “is justified by humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest,” Biden stated in his presidential determination. Historically, the average has been 95,000 under both Republican and Democratic administrations. Biden earmarked 5,000 more slots for people from Europe and Central Asia for the 2023 budget year, making room to accommodate those fleeing the war in Ukraine. The largest number of slots — 40,000 — was set aside for refugees from Africa, followed by 35,000 from South Asia and 15,000 each from East Asia, Europe and Latin America. Biden has struggled to restore the U.S. Refugee Program despite raising the numbers and removing bureaucratic barriers put in place by his predecessor, which slowed the process and led to a massive backlog. Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, head of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, said the Biden administration must act now to improve the refugee program with the United Nations reporting a record 100 million people being displaced from their homes. “It must ramp up and streamline overseas processing of refugee applications if this lifesaving program is to remain relevant amid an unprecedented global displacement crisis,” she said in a statement. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that “this ambitious target demonstrates that the United States is committed to rebuilding and strengthening the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program” through various means. He pointed to plans for a pilot program that is expected to get underway by the end of the year that will allow regular Americans to sign up to resettle refugees in their communities, much like U.S. citizens did in stepping up to help Afghans and Ukrainians over the past year. Traditionally refugees are placed in communities by nine refugee resettlement agencies. “Our refugee admissions program embodies the best of American values and the will to help those in need, and it will continue to provide access to resettlement as a lifesaving, durable solution,” Blinken said. Ford Releases New 2023 Super Duty Truck Highlighting Technology Courier Journal
Ford Releases New 2023 Super Duty Truck, Highlighting Technology – Courier Journal https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/ford-releases-new-2023-super-duty-truck-highlighting-technology-courier-journal/ Advanced capabilities and driver connectivity are the main focus of the newest F-Series Super Duty truck model revealed by Ford Motor Co. executives during a special presentation at Churchill Downs Tuesday. The new model, the first new entry in the Super Duty series since 2017, is expected to go on sale in early 2023. The unveiling ceremony kicked off with a Ford derby, where employees drove their personal trucks around the track, showcasing Ford trucks through the ages. Tuesday’s unveiling followed an announcement earlier in the day by Ford executives and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear that 500 new jobs will be coming to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, funded through a $700 million investment by the company. “The investment goes into updating or adding new equipment throughout the facility to make sure we’re ready for the content of the new truck,” John Savona, vice president of Americas Manufacturing & Labor Affairs for Ford Blue, said during the Tuesday morning news conference. Mike Levine, a Ford North America product communications director, said Ford was able to decide what new Super Duty truck features needed to be created after spending time living with customers in the Canadian oil fields and miners in the western United States. “We understand truck customers better than anyone else,” Levine said. “These are the industries, and these are the customers that we have that depend on our trucks to do their jobs.” Levine said by spending time watching customers use the truck it helped the company make new updates to the 2023 Super Duty that “makes their lives easier and a little bit more productive.” Ford is currently one of the largest employers in the city with nearly 9,000 total employees. The company is also one of the largest employers in the state, directly employing more than 12,000 workers and supporting 120,000 jobs across the commonwealth. Ford investment:Ford announces 500 new jobs, $700 million investment into Louisville manufacturing plant The company announced it would contribute $5.8 billion and another 5,000 jobs to a battery park project based in Hardin County in 2021. Here are five key features of the new model. 1. Standard 6.8-liter V8 gas engine An increased engine will give the new model more horsepower for towing, payload and torque. Ford is also introducing a new high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 engine and 7.3-liter V8 engine. The goal of the standard engine is to target low-end torque which will allow for drivers to start on inclined surfaces and merge on to highways easier. The new engines will also get better gas horsepower and be able to go longer periods of time between oil changes due in part to improved air intake. New grilles will also maximize engine cooling while the truck is under heavy loads. 2. Embedded 5G capability The 2023 Super Duty will become the first U.S. pickup truck with 5G wireless capability, powered by AT&T, embedded in the vehicle. The feature will allow drivers to have Wi-Fi, access to Ford Power-Up software updates while driving and faster and smarter mapping capabilities. The Super Duty will also be able to provide a hotspot for up to 10 additional devices. The Trailer Navigation feature will use smart technology to identify the best routes based on a trailer’s size and weight and provide early warnings for low bridges and tight turns. This feature also allows the owner to create different trailer profiles for the various trailers they may pull making each drive customized to the specific trailer hitched. 3. Ford Pro Upfit Integration System A new feature aimed at drivers who utilize upfits and other body equipment such as plows or utility cranes, the digital integration system will provide improved access to the Super Duty’s electrical system, allowing for easier calibration. 4. Tremor Off-Road Package A new package available for those who need extra assets for off-roading, Tremor package trucks comes with a suspension tuned specifically for off-road driving, a front axle with a limited-slip differential, 35-inch Goodyear tires, custom 18-inch wheels, Trail Control and Trail Turn Assist technology and new drive modes, including a rock-crawl mode. 5. Interior upgrades On the interior, the model will provide an 8-12 inch display screen to allow drivers to see the outside of the vehicle from every angle and even offer an inside look into the trailers being hauled. This package also offers complete comfort by providing four USB charging ports, a wireless charging pad, reclining seats that go fully horizontal and an eight-speaker sound system. Ford officials said that while the base model will be available early next year, the trim series will be available starting spring 2023. Here is a list of additional new features truck lovers can find in the new model: Pro Power Onboard which turns the truck into a mobile generator Power outlets inside the truck, through the cargo box or mounted on chassis cab 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission Power take off connection to run added equipment for the chassis cab models Standard four-wheel drive on all models XLT or above Onboard scales with smart hitch that estimate cargo weight 360-degree trailer camera system Blind spot information system for fifth wheel and gooseneck which can be attached to a trailer to add more visual aide for the driver Tailgate down camera and tailgate down reverse sensing system to alert drivers when the tailgate is down to make hooking up to a trailer easier Pro Trailer Hitch Assist which will automatically back the Super Duty up and align it with the trailer Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering technology Trailer theft alert will provide alerts to the FordPass app if a trailer is tampered with while the truck is locked Forward and reverse sensing system which will show drivers of objects immediately in front or behind the vehicle Front and rear brake assist which will allow drivers to prevent low-speed collisions Full-color head-up display which will encourage drivers to keep their eyes on the road by putting information in a drivers line of sight Customizable 12-inch digital instrument cluster Center console slot that can hold a tablet upright

Henny Stewart is a former radio and TV personality in Jacksonville, Florida. “The weather is beautiful,” Stewart said. “As they say, ‘the calm before the storm.'” Jacksonville is not expected to take a direct hit from Ian, but Stewart says there are still a lot of people preparing for the worst and panic-buying. “It reminds me of COVID,” Stewart said. “People running in the stores, panicking, running to the back of the store for the water, for the toilet tissue, and there is none.” All of it has some Louisville area residents changing their vacation plans. Jennifer Armstrong is a travel consultant with Louisville-based Travelmation, and is already making adjustments and exit plans for clients traveling to and from Florida. “I’ve had to move a client that was going in, and I’ve had to move them back a little farther,” she said. “They have small children and they really just don’t want to take that chance. So they’re just — they’re cutting their vacation short by two or three days.” Armstrong recommends a Plan B for anyone traveling to Florida during hurricane season. “If something would happen…if you drove there, can we get you to Georgia? Can we get you to Alabama? Can we get you somewhere as an option if you have to get out?” she said.  Meanwhile, Henny says she’s at least a few hours away from the area expected to take a direct hit, but her latest trip to the store showed the panic buying is still out of control. “They had just gotten in a whole pallet of generators, and by the time I was walking out of the store, they only had two left,” she said. “They were grabbing generators, like they were M&Ms.” Kentucky’s Transportation Secretary has issued an official order to help speed up things for emergency crews heading to Florida. As a result, there are currently no limits on the number of hours they can drive and crews can bypass weigh stations. Copyright 2022 WDRB Media. All rights reserved.

Dana Salo Courtesy photo Salo Home Watch is a service that “keeps an eye on things” at your vacation or primary home while you are not in residence. The NHWA was formed in 2009 in order to establish and maintain industry standards for absentee homeowner services throughout the United States and Canada (www.nationalhomewatchassociation.org). During 2018-2019, Salo Home Watch experienced five saves. A save is a situation where, if Home Watch was not watching over the client’s home, the client would have experienced a big mess and an expensive clean-up. Owner Dana Salo, a father of two daughters, is a 1983 graduate of Northeastern University, College of Criminal Justice. After retiring as a 36-year letter carrier, he began Salo Home Watch in August 2009, when a retired doctor on his mail route asked him to watch over his home while he was away. After counting the number of vacation homes on his mail route, a business idea took root. He is now operating Home Watch full-time. Salo likes to point out that unoccupied homes are the breeding grounds for trouble. If your home sits unoccupied, it is not a question of “if something will happen,” he says, but instead, “when something will happen.” Salo sat on the NHWA’s Advisory Board from its inception until last year. He is a Certified Home Watch Professional, making him one of the elite professionals in the industry. The CHWP designation shows Salo’s commitment to providing excellent service to his clients. Salo Home Watch serves Rockport, Gloucester, Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and most of the North Shore along the Route 128 corridor. Salo can be reached at 978-660-2372 or salohomewatch@gmail.com. California Bans Unnecessary Pesticide Chemical Testing On Dogs And Cats Los Angeles Times
California Bans Unnecessary Pesticide, Chemical Testing On Dogs And Cats – Los Angeles Times https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/california-bans-unnecessary-pesticide-chemical-testing-on-dogs-and-cats-los-angeles-times/ California will ban the testing of harmful chemicals on dogs and cats, effectively becoming the first state in the U.S. to remove the option for companies seeking to learn about the harmful effects from their products. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law Monday along with several other bills aimed at protecting animal welfare in the state. The law goes into effect Jan. 1. State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) authored Senate Bill 879, which bans unnecessary toxicity testing that exposes dogs and cats to industrial and consumer products. Products tested on animals include pesticides, chemical substances and food additives, Wiener said. “For many families, including my own, pets are beloved companions that enrich our lives every day,” Newsom said in a statement. “I’m proud to sign this legislation to advance our state’s leadership on animal welfare by ending cruel and unnecessary testing on dogs and cats, among other measures to protect the health and safety of pets in California.” Testing involves exposing animals to products to better understand what harms can be expected when they are used by humans. But the process is often painful for animals, according to the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The testing includes observing animals for toxic effects over an extended period of time, including vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, death and other serious side effects. Some animals are bred specifically to be exposed to harmful products in laboratory settings, according to Wiener’s office. The Prohibiting Extraneous Testing Act will not apply to products intended for use on dogs and cats including medicines, like anesthesia, cancer treatment and other products for animals, but is the first of its kind in the country. “Animal testing that has no scientific value and causes terrible pain and suffering is inhumane, unnecessary, and cruel,” Wiener said in a statement. “The PET Act protects cats and dogs from this type of testing, and helps these animals live long, healthy lives.” The most recent example of animal testing involved 4,000 beagles bred in captivity at a research facility in Virginia. The dogs were living in unsafe conditions at an Envigo RMS facility. A sizable number of those dogs have since been relocated to California, said Kitty Block, chief executive of the Humane Society of the United States. “As we celebrate California becoming the first state in the nation to prohibit certain testing on dogs and cats, we extend our gratitude to Governor Newsom for signing The PET Act, SB 879, into law,” Block said in a statement. “Almost 500 beagles recently arrived in California after our organization led a historic effort to remove nearly 4,000 beagles from a mass breeding facility that sold dogs to laboratories for experimentation.” Animal rescue and advocacy groups say the type of testing done on dogs and cats is ineffective at indicating harmful effects in humans. About 60,000 dogs each year are used in government, university, commercial and private industry laboratories, according to the Humane Society.

Hurricane Ian Updates: College Football Schedule Tracker With Florida, South Carolina, UCF Moving Games – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/hurricane-ian-updates-college-football-schedule-tracker-with-florida-south-carolina-ucf-moving-games-cbs-sports/ The first major storm of the 2022 hurricane season is about to touch down in the Southeastern United States, and it appears prepared to affect those living on the west coast of Florida and nearby states in the region. Hurricane Ian should touch the continental United States for the first time Tuesday evening with the storm carrying up through the Gulf of Mexico into Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina by the weekend. While it may not be swirling during some college football games on Saturday, it could certainly leave plenty of damage in its wake. Beyond that, emergency personnel in each state will be on high alert making services needed for game days — such as security — a lower priority for states when the same resources can be used to project the population. As such, college football teams have already begun moving games. Some are changing locations. Others are moving days and being played either earlier or later in the week. Given the constantly changing situation caused by Hurricane Ian, CBS Sports will be updating all of the schedule changes and game updates constantly throughout the week. Keep it locked here for game information, schedule updates and much more through the weekend as Week 5 of the 2022 college football season remains in flux. See New Posts Pinned UCF vs. SMU moved to Sunday UCF was set to host SMU on Saturday afternoon, but Hurricane Ian has delayed that kickoff. The Knights and Mustangs will meet at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Television coverage for the key AAC matchup will be determined at a later date.  Pinned No change for Florida State vs. Wake Forest … yet No. 23 Florida State is set to host No. 22 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon, and that appears to still be the case … for now.  Pinned Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson has concerns No. 22 Wake Forest is scheduled to travel to Tallahassee, Florida, to take on No. 23 Florida State on Saturday afternoon, but the hurricane has put the time and location of that game in doubt. Demon Deacons coach Dave Clawson said Tuesday that player safety is his biggest concern no matter what decision the ACC makes regarding the status of the game. Pinned Eastern Washington vs. Florida moved to Sunday Florida’s home game with Eastern Washington, originally scheduled for Saturday at noon ET, has been moved to Sunday at noon ET at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida. All tickets that were issued for Saturday will be honored for Sunday afternoon’s game. Pinned South Florida vs. East Carolina changes venues Originally scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, the game will see a site location change to Boca Raton at Howard Schnellenberger Field, the home stadium of FAU, who is not in town for its Week 5 game as the Owls will be playing at North Texas in Denton, Texas. The game will now kickoff at 2 p.m. Pinned South Carolina vs. South Carolina State moved Originally scheduled for Saturday at noon ET, the game will now be played Thursday at 7 p.m. Television coverage has not been announced at this time. Fans with tickets for Saturday’s matchup will be able to use them for Thursday night’s game.  “Due to the potential impact of the hurricane on Columbia and the surrounding area, it is in the best interest of safety to play the game on Thursday rather than Saturday afternoon,” South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said. “I appreciate the cooperation of South Carolina State head coach Buddy Pough, the South Carolina State administration and the Southeastern Conference officials who worked closely to make the appropriate operational adjustments in order to accommodate this change in the schedule.” Tanner added: “Based on the current forecast and expected weather conditions as well as information from our campus, state and local law enforcement agencies, at this time, the University is confident in our ability to host the game on Thursday at Williams-Brice Stadium. We will be able to staff traffic, law enforcement, security and other game day operations. The safety of everyone affected by the storm and the minimization of the impact on emergency personnel were the most important factors considered in making the decision,”

The partnership seeks to enable metaverse experiences that complement the Singapore attraction’s physical offerings, specifically, new opportunities for ‘phygital’ — a blend of physical and digital — events at the Gardens and in a re-created version of it in the metaverse developed by ESPL, dubbed a digital twin. “With the enhanced 5G connectivity, we look forward to working with M1 and ESPL to create even more interactive and immersive experiences in Gardens by the Bay, offering a phygital option for event organisers to expand their reach beyond the physical confines of the venues here, to engage people from around the world,” said Lee Kok Fatt, deputy CEO of Gardens by the Bay. In one example showcased at the launch, a metaverse concert was held in the digital twin, featuring an avatar of Singapore-based artiste DJ Red interacting with the audience against a virtual back-drop of Supertree Grove. As such, audiences with 5G-enabled mobile device can access the metaverse and experience the performance in a real-time immersive environment. “Offering metaverse experiences is an exciting milestone in our True 5G rollout roadmap,” added Willis Sim, chief corporate sales and solutions officer at M1. “M1 is constantly pushing the bar with our 5G capabilities, and we’re proud to roll out 5G within the Gardens by the Bay as well as power its digital recreation made by our partner ESPL. “The ability to give audiences a live and immersive experience both physically and virtually has immense potential to deliver rich content on-the-go. We are excited to unlock new metaverse opportunities for the entertainment, MICE and tourism industries and help Gardens by the Bay become the garden of the future.” In a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) industry use case, M1 envisions adding a “new dimension” to physical events and allowing participants from around the world to interact with the content and with one another in the metaverse. Meanwhile, specific to the education sector, M1 suggests that the high-speed and low-latency connectivity of 5G also supports educational technology to bring curricula to life and capture the imagination of students through extended reality and gamification. Related: Phasmophobia: How Custom Difficulties Work How to Use the DOTS Projector in Phasmophobia As with any other gadget or tool in a game, your first step is to equip the DOTS Projector. Next, you’ll have to look around for a hard surface, such as a wall, door, or the floor, and press the “F” key on your keyboard. Once you’ve hit the “F” key, the DOTS Projector will do what it’s meant to. It will project hundreds of little dots in front of you, covering the room. Whenever a ghost comes near, you will be able to see the shape of the ghost as a silhouette under the projector’s dots. However, ghosts can and will likely appear then very soon after disappear just as quickly. So, make sure you are actively checking the room’s hard surfaces. Though, since the DOTS Projector’s main purpose is to help you view ghosts in Phasmophobia, it will have done its job by that point. Estimates do not guarantee end-of-month prices. Bitcoin (BTC) reached its highest level in more than a week on Tuesday, September 27, when it surpassed $20,000. Despite this, the cryptocurrency still has trouble breaking out of its narrow trading range. As a result, several traders and investors are now focusing on the crypto’s next target price by October 31, given the volatility experienced in the crypto market. In particular, the cryptocurrency community on CoinMarketCap forecasts that Bitcoin’s value will increase by 13.18% from its current level, reaching a median price of $22,857 by the end of October 2022, an increase of over $2,661. Bitcoin October price prediction. Source: CoinMarketCap According to crypto trading Michaël van de Poppe, the breakout consisted of a ton of spot volume on Bitcoin. He also suggested that it is a good idea to potentially long Bitcoin and short the dollar and that the flagship digital asset could be moving near the region the crypto community had suggested for the end of October. “It depends on the indices today, but it looks like we’ll be able to look towards $23K for some relief, at least. Time to long BTC.Time to short DXY. Probably that type of period.” He added: “Upside: – $20.7K – $22.9K Downside: – $20K – $19.3-19.5K. All are levels I’d be looking at for entries on positions.” Bitcoin price levels. Source: Michaël van de Poppe Bitcoin price fluctuation Since the middle of June, Bitcoin’s price has fluctuated between $18,000 and $25,000. This comes after a meltdown that wiped roughly $2 trillion off the value of the whole cryptocurrency market since it reached its all-time high in November.  This market fall was fueled by a wave of bankruptcies and insolvency troubles that trickled through the cryptocurrency sector. Interest rate increases by central banks aimed at managing uncontrolled inflation were also driving factors in this market decline. Interestingly, the recent upswing in Bitcoin, which started on Monday, September 26, occurred despite a decline in US equities, with the S&P 500 ending at its lowest level since 2022. The price of stock futures went up on September 27. Therefore, there are indications that the link between cryptocurrencies and equities may be beginning to break down.  Investors carefully watch DXY Meanwhile, investors are keeping a careful eye on the value of the United States dollar. This year, the dollar index, which compares the US dollar value to that of a group of other currencies, has increased by more than 18%.  Because the price of Bitcoin swings in the opposite direction of the dollar, a strong dollar is bad for the cryptocurrency. However, with some analysts such as Poppe suggesting the dollar index might be getting close to its peak, it could indicate a possible bottom for Bitcoin, which may be one explanation for Bitcoin’s recent price increase. Owamni: The US Best New Restaurant? BBC
Owamni: The US Best New Restaurant? BBC
Owamni: The US’ Best New Restaurant? – BBC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/owamni-the-us-best-new-restaurant-bbc/ Owamni: The US’ best new restaurant? (Image credit: Dana Thompson ) Through The Sioux Chef, Sean Sherman and Dana Thompson use food as a guidepost to a hidden part of history, all while sparking a (r)evolution of “true” North American foods. O On the back patio at Owamni – the Minneapolis, Minnesota, restaurant owned by Sean Sherman and Dana Thompson – the late-evening sun cast my dessert in a natural spotlight. Marigold-coloured agave squash caramel cascaded slowly down the sides of a sunflower-seed cake the colour of sandstone, and a deep red berry sauce shimmered atop a maple chaga cake so earthy in tone, it felt as though it were plucked from the forest floor. The connection to nature is palpable here, where sweeping views of the Mississippi River, along with curated indigenous plants like prairie dropseed – whose high-protein seeds can be eaten raw or ground into a flour – etch themselves into the landscape like a painting. “We named this restaurant Owamni from the Dakota name OwamniYomni, for the waterfall that used to surround this area,” said Thompson, a descendant of the Wahpeton Sisseton and Mdewakanton Dakota tribes. “It was said to be as beautiful as Niagara Falls. Spirit Island was the most sacred of the four islands here, and the Dakota and Anishinaabe communities would take their canoes there for ceremony, and women would come from far away just to give birth there.” Thompson’s grandfather, who contributed historical knowledge to the book Where the Waters Gather and the Rivers Meet, an atlas of the Eastern Sioux published in 1994, made it possible for this important piece of indigenous history to live on. One of Owamni’s many strengths is its ability to bridge the past to the present, knowing one can only exist because of the other. You feel this in the dining room, perched on the second floor of two abandoned flour mills, restored after the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and Parks Foundation raised more than $19 million to honour the indigenous history of the area by creating a park with Owamni as its inspiration. It’s an investment that has already paid off in powerful ways. Less than a year after opening in July 2021, Owamni was named 2022’s Best New Restaurant in the United States by the James Beard Foundation – whose annual awards recognise exceptional talent in the culinary arts, hospitality, media and the broader food world. The accolade is big deal for any restaurant, but a monumental one when a decolonised menu is on the table. At Owamni, this means never using ingredients introduced to North America after Europeans arrived – including cane sugar, wheat, dairy, pork and chicken. Instead, only indigenous ingredients like turkey, bison, walleye, beans, wild rice, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, herbs, maple syrup and blue corn are featured. Other ingredients – like crickets, acorns and timpsula (or prairie turnip) – might be unfamiliar to more mainstream American palates, despite coming from the places we walk, cycle and drive past. But eating the food here brings with it a profound sense of place difficult to put into words. Sunflower-seed cake with agave squash caramel (Credit: Dana Thompson) While I’ve had sunflower seeds and honey before, I never expected that, with the addition of water, such simple ingredients could become a cake befitting any pastry shop. And though I can only imagine what a molten sunset absorbing a field of pumpkins into its hot, sticky flow would taste like, I feel certain nothing would come closer than the ethereal squash-agave caramel painted on top. It was so addictive I could have eaten an entire bowl of it. But then I wouldn’t have had room for the blue corn mush – a hazelnut and berry porridge – from the Ute Mountain Ute tribe in Colorado. A pool of maple syrup lay in wait at the bottom of the dish, and its sweetness, combined with the tender grit of the corn meal, the crunch of the hazelnuts and soft, tart berries, felt like a hug from my grandma. And that glistening berry topping on the maple chaga cake? It’s a Lakota berry soup called wojape, which Sherman uses as a sauce in both sweet and savoury dishes. As a child, he’d gather buckets full of fresh chokecherries to make it but uses many different berries today. The food, while beautiful, is so much more than a plate of art. It’s a thoughtful entry point for conversations about indigenous history – something inherent to the mission of The Sioux Chef, the company Sherman, an Oglala Lakota chef, founded in 2014, and co-owns with Thompson. Their business started with catering and pop-ups and now includes a food truck, the non-profit North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS) – from which the Indigenous Food Lab, a professional indigenous kitchen and training centre in Minneapolis’ Midtown Global Market is based – and, of course, Owamni. The wheels are already in motion to replicate the Indigenous Food Lab across the country, with immediate plans for locations in Montana and Alaska, and, eventually, into more than 45 satellite locations across the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South America. Owamni was named 2022’s Best New Restaurant in the United States by the James Beard Foundation (Credit: Stefanie Ellis) “North America’s history begins with indigenous history,” Sherman said. “There should be Native American restaurants all over the place.” While he and culinary cohorts – like James Beard finalist Crystal Wahpepah, chef Nephi Craig of Café Gozhóó in Arizona, cook and educator Hillel Echo-Hawk and I-Collective co-founder Neftali Duran – have long been working to shift the conversations around indigenous food, the cuisine is still just gaining a foothold in the US. Recognising the limited time they have to capture guests’ attention, Owamni brings the past to life with intentional design touches – from a map that hangs in the foyer, noting the original indigenous names for the waterways and villages throughout Dakota Territory, to the sunlight-flooded dining room, whose wall of windows gives guests a clear view of the pulsing river below. At the door, a neon sign reminds you: You Are on Native Land. Thompson asked if I’d like to pose under it for a photo and snapped away on my iPhone. Though she and Sherman know some people still favour trendy food photos over the story behind the food, they’re banking on the fact that the more exposure people have to indigenous culture, the more they’ll want to learn its history. Owamni’s dining room overlooks the Mississippi River (Credit: Stefanie Ellis) But what that history is and isn’t makes their work all the more challenging. “History books were written by the US government,” said Sherman. “You always hear how Native Americans died from starvation and disease, but people were intentionally mutilated, murdered and killed brutally. “When you follow American history, you’ll see that from 1800-1900, indigenous people still had [access to] over 80 percent of land [in the US], but by the end of that century, had access to just two percent.” He pointed to a shockingly long list of historical events systematically designed to stamp out indigenous culture, such as the US government’s massive slaughtering of buffalo. Before 1800, an estimated 60 million buffalo roamed the land, offering crucial food sources, along with material for shoes and clothing, housing, cooking vessels and medicine. By 1900, after widespread efforts eradicated the buffalo population across the country, only a few hundred animals were left, effectively paralysing the mechanisms that existed for indigenous people to maintain a self-sustaining way of life. In his cookbook, The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen, Sherman explains that fry bread – often the only thing people associate with Native American food – is “a difficult symbol connecting the present to the painful narrative of our history. It originated [nearly 155 years ago] when the US government forced our ancestors from the homelands they farmed, foraged and hunted, and the waters they fished. Displaced and moved to reservations, they lost control of their food and were made to rely on government-issued commodities – canned meat, white flour, sugar and lard. Fry bread contributes to high levels of diabetes and obesity that affect nearly one-half of the Native population living on reservations. Obesity and tooth decay did not exist among indigenous people of North America before colonial ingredients were introduced.” The seeds from prairie dropseed can be eaten raw or ground into a flour (Credit: Stefanie Ellis) Sherman, who grew up on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation, says these historical events devastated so much for human beings and their knowledge base, yet no one is talking about it. “It’s not ancient history,” he said. “This just happened.” Every culture has its own connection to food, including how it’s prepared, grown and consumed. For indigenous people, food sovereignty – the right to healthy and culturally appropriate food and the right to define food and agriculture systems – was erased through colonisation. Sherman hopes to put the power back in the hands of the people, because he believes when you control your food, you control your destiny. In North America, ingredients like the tepary bean, a culturally appropriate food and an important heirloom crop brought back from near extinction by Ramona Farms in Arizona, grow abundantly in areas without a lot of water. And at Owamni, when mixed with salt, sunflower oil, pepita meal and maple syrup, it creates an immensely comforting foundation for the tender tumble of smoked Lake Superior trout (from the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Wisconsin) piled on top. The fish was remarkable – evoking memories of a snuffed-out campfire that left the tiniest trail of smoke lingering in the air,...

IMPD Pushes Forward With Gunshot Detection Technology – WISH TV Indianapolis, IN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/impd-pushes-forward-with-gunshot-detection-technology-wish-tv-indianapolis-in/ INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis police have begun Phase 2 of the process to install gunshot detection technology by collecting data from three vendors: Flock Safety, J&M Security Systems, and ShotSpotter. “That’s one of our major questions, is how accurate is this. It’s one thing to hear a gunshot and have no idea where it came from, and it’s another thing to be able to respond to a very specific area,” said Matthew Thomas, commander of criminal investigations division of Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Thomas tells I-Team 8 the collection of data will help answer a long list of questions: accuracy, timing, and even the types of weapons that are being used. “How fast was the response time? Has it changed? Or are we able to render medical aid to somebody more quickly?” he said. “It’s important that we walk through this methodically, and we’re using Phase 2 to do that, to ensure that the processes and policies are in place for Phase 3, which is active response by officers when they receive an alert directly to their laptop.” Thomas says the phases area coming at no cost to IMPD because $9 million was given to the department through the American Rescue Plan Act, which provided federal funds as a response to the coronavirus pandemic. However, once and if a vendor is picked, the gunshot detection technology will be costly. IMPD teamed up with Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis to “study the results of this pilot and allow the community to make an informed decision about continuing the funding of this technology.” Thomas said, “They’re able to sift through massive amounts of data and use best practices to be able to provide us kind of a third party for an independent voice and perspective.” The IMPD commander says the pilot process will remain within a 5-mile radius in the East District. He says, while the police department believes the technology will help officers to be more efficient, it will not replace the basics. “Gunshot detection systems are not a substitute for calling 911. They are an enhancement,” Thomas said. “There will never be a replacement for calling 911. A person’s perspective of events is critical, and forming a more complete picture.” Thomas says Phase 2 will last two weeks. He says the goal is to get through all six phases and then pilot one vendor for a year. © 2022 Circle City Broadcasting I, LLC. | All Rights Reserved.

Magical Vacation Planner Racing: Chase Briscoe Talladega Advance – Speedway Digest https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/magical-vacation-planner-racing-chase-briscoe-talladega-advance-speedway-digest/ ● Fresh off a top-five finish a in the Round of 12 opener of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, Chase Briscoe returns to Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway ninth in the standings, just four points below the cutline to advance to the Round of 8. The driver of the Magical Vacation Planner Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) finished 37th in this year’s April race at Talladega after an accident on lap 56 ended his bid. ● In three Cup Series starts at Talladega, Briscoe has a best finish of 11th, earned on April 25, 2021. He has four NASCAR Xfinity Series starts (best finish of fourth in April 2019), one Camping World Truck Series start (22nd-place result in October 2017), and one ARCA Menards Series start (third-place finish in April 2016) at the 2.66-mile oval. ● Briscoe has earned four top-five finishes and five top-10s in 30 races this season, and he’s led 238 laps thus far compared to just 18 during his 2021 Rookie of the Year campaign. The 27-year-old driver earned his first Cup Series victory in his 40th career start March 13 at Phoenix Raceway. He scored his first Cup Series pole award June 5 at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis. ● Riding along with Briscoe and the No. 14 SHR Ford Mustang this weekend is Magical Vacation Planners (MVP), which was founded by Jamie Ane Eubanks alongside her husband JJ, a former professional basketball player, as a storefront travel agency in 2006. Today, it is a company that provides one of the best vacation planning services in the industry. It operates through three branches: MVP Parks, MVP Cruising and MVP Getaways. The company provides its exclusive and personalized, stress-free planning service at no additional expense to its clients, making the extensive array of Disney options and add-ons easy to understand and navigate. MVP actively seeks savings for its clients, monitoring early-morning releases of discounted room or vacation packages while also scouring existing reservations for price drops to where they can modify an existing reservation at the newfound lower price. MVP will also plan a family’s itinerary, expertly navigating Disney’s Genie+ and Lighting Lane systems to maximize resort and park times by avoiding long lines while also securing those premium Disney dining experiences that include coveted character meetings. Chase Briscoe, Driver of the No. 14 Magical Vacation Planner Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing: You’re in a good position within the playoffs headed to Talladega. Does it help to know you are only four points below the cutline? “Thankfully, we aren’t in a massive points deficit going into this weekend. We made the best out of a tough situation to start in Texas and came out just outside of the top-eight in points. If we can keep doing that and just running the best race for us, I think we can continue in the playoffs. I don’t think anyone expected Texas to go the way that it did, but it was a nice primer for the chaos of Talladega.” You’ve done well on superspeedways this year, even if you don’t have the results to show for it. Is there a confidence that comes with knowing you are capable of being up front and potentially winning on these types of tracks? “I’m not sure. I’d like to say that I feel good about it, but there are so many unknowns. You never really know what you’re going to be up against. This weekend will be pretty similar to what we faced last weekend, just in terms of trying to avoid all of those things happening around us. I feel like I’ve gotten better at superspeedway racing over the years and we kind of saw that in the Daytona 500, but there’s not much you can control in these races, which we also saw at Daytona in August. Talladega is a different track. This car handles a little different there, but the concept of superspeedway racing is the same. Things happen so fast and it’s easy to end up in someone else’s mess, so I can’t make mistakes that are going to take us out of a chance to win and lock in or just have a good finish. I think our strategy is the same for the next few races, just run our best race and don’t do anything that can take us out of it. If it ends in a win, that’s great, but we really just can’t have a bad day.” TSC PR

Living Donor Transplantation Offers A Safe Alternative For Liver Transplant Patients – Anti Aging News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/living-donor-transplantation-offers-a-safe-alternative-for-liver-transplant-patients-anti-aging-news/ Demand for donor livers for transplant patients outstrips supply with over 15% of waitlist patients dying after a year. A new international study offers support for increasing the use of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in Western countries and reducing the imbalance between organ supply and demand. This study is reported in the Journal of Hepatology, the official journal of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, published by Elsevier. LDLT is when a portion of the liver from a healthy living person is removed and placed into someone whose liver is no longer working properly. The donor’s remaining liver regrows and returns to its normal size, volume, and capacity within a few months after the surgery. Although the waiting period for a deceased donor transplant can be over five years, LDLT remains uncommon compared to deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT) in Western countries compared to those in Asia. Identifying differences in outcomes and other transplant characteristics may help identify areas for healthcare improvement and clarify whether expanding LDLT practices can be justified in countries that rely primarily on DDLT. “There has been a growing interest in strategies to alleviate the increasing demand for transplantation and the unacceptably high mortality on the liver transplant waitlist,” explained Gonzalo Sapisochin, MD, Ph.D., MSc, Division of General Surgery, University Health Network, Toronto, ON, Canada. “One such approach is LDLT, which can expand the number of grafts available for transplantation. However, short- and long-term outcomes need to be maintained for both the donors and recipients. We, therefore, sought to compare donor and recipient characteristics and post-transplant outcomes after LDLT.” This is a retrospective multicenter study of adults aged 18 years or older who underwent primary LDLT between January 2008 and December 2018 as reported by three national liver transplantation registries: United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS; US), National Health Service Blood and Transplantation (NHSBT; UK), and the Canadian Organ Replacement Registry (CORR; Canada). Patients undergoing retransplantation or multi-organ transplantation were excluded. Investigators compared recipient and donor characteristics, temporal trends, and post-LDLT outcomes across the three registries. In addition, they sought to evaluate outcomes for LDLT compared with DDLT within each of the countries. A total of 2,954 LDLTs were performed in these countries, 2,328 of which took place in the US, 529 in Canada, and 97 in the UK. Canada performed the highest proportion of LDLT procedures over time. Investigators were pleasantly surprised to see that long-term outcomes were excellent despite relatively low use of LDLT in Western countries. The one-, five-, and 10-year patient survival rates were 92.6%, 82.8%, and 70.0% in the USA; 96.1%, 89.9%, and 82.2% in Canada; and 91.4%, 85.4%, and 66.7% in the UK, respectively. This analysis of LDLT demonstrates that despite the low use of LDLT in Western countries compared to Asian countries, long-term survival is excellent. In addition, the mortality risk is not statistically significantly different between these three countries. “This study offers support for increasing the use of LDLT in Western countries because it provides an opportunity to reduce the imbalance between organ supply and demand and, as a result, offers waitlist candidates the possibility of earlier transplantation and decreased mortality on the transplant waitlist,” commented Dr. Sapisochin

USA Vs. Saudi Arabia Score: USMNT Held To Uninspiring Scoreless Draw As World Cup Now Looms On Horizon – Sporting News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/usa-vs-saudi-arabia-score-usmnt-held-to-uninspiring-scoreless-draw-as-world-cup-now-looms-on-horizon-sporting-news/ If the 2-0 defeat to Japan saw worries creep across the USMNT fanbase ahead of the 2022 World Cup, then alarm bells are now surely blaring as the United States played to a drab 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia in the final friendly before the World Cup arrives in late November. Both sides had a few decent chances but the match was hardly a barnburner, with Christian Pulisic unable to inspire an attacking onslaught from the United States. Ricardo Pepi, who has struggled for club form at striker, was handed a start but saw just scraps up front. At the back, mistakes that plagued the U.S. against Japan cropped up again as starter Aaron Long and substitute Mark McKenzie both struggled on the ball. Gregg Berhalter has preached calm and trust as the process plays out, but with USMNT supporters having waited eight years for World Cup action and the big dance nearly here, the fanbase grows increasingly worried. Poor results against two teams not expected to exit their respective groups in Qatar are a worrisome way to highlight the September international window. Now, Wales awaits in the Group B opener for the United States as the players return to the clubs and the coaches get to devising a plan for success at the 2022 World Cup. DECOURCY: Why Pepi might be USA’s best chance at resolving forward conundrum USA vs. Saudi Arabia final score   1H 2H Final USA 0 0 0 Saudi Arabia 0 0 0 Goals: None USA vs. Saudi Arabia live updates, highlights from friendly FULL-TIME: USA 0-0 Saudi Arabia A totally uninspiring performance as the World Cup preparation comes to an official close. The United States had very little creativity or attacking spark, and Gio Reyna was injured in the process. It was better than against Japan, but not by much considering the level of competition. After a loss to Japan and a draw with Saudi Arabia, head coach Gregg Berhalter will face a lot of nervous U.S. fans and media between now and the start of the World Cup. 90+1 min: Tyler Adams gets a yellow card in a final act from the official as the three minutes of added time quickly play out. Saudi Arabia with one last set-piece chance before the time ticks down. 86th min: Off a nothing throw, Jesus Ferreira threads Paul Arriola in on goal, but the FC Dallas winger blasts his shot miles wide. Arriola’s hit looked like a power hitter swinging out of his shoes trying to hit a 500-foot home run. 82nd min: Now it’s Saudi Arabia’s turn to possess the ball in the attacking third, threatening Matt Turner’s penalty area on multiple occasions. The U.S. just look completely flat, with very few chemistry and no answers to find a winner. 75th min: A long spell of good attacking pressure from the U.S. doesn’t result in any solid chances. Arriola, Ferreira, and Pulisic are at the heart of the moves, but nothing comes off. Malik Tillman and Brenden Aaronson will come off the bench for an appearance, while Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic are replaced. Interestingly, Aaronson comes into midfield and Tillman goes out wide. 70th min: Chance, Saudi Arabia! A giveaway from Mark McKenzie creates an opportunity for Asiri, but Matt Turner makes a great parried save! The Arsenal goalkeeper was great against Japan, and he’s not yet beaten today, denying the substitute. — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) September 27, 2022 68th min: More pressure from Saudi Arabia as they bring on fresh legs, but the cross from deep on the right flank doesn’t find a mark. 61st min: Chance, USA! Just moments after coming on, Jesus Ferreira comes close! Paul Arriola sets up the chance, and Ferreira strikes from a central location, but Al-Rubaie makes the simple save down low, with the shot directly at the Saudi Arabia goalkeeper. Our FC Dallas boys combine for our best look of the evening thus far pic.twitter.com/FPaNlcC8TO — U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team (@USMNT) September 27, 2022 57th min: Oh boy. Abdulhamid obliterates DeAndre Yedlin deep on the right flank, late after delivering a cross. Typical from this referee, Abdulhamid gets just a yellow here, but on replay it shows a nasty late tackle, and the FOX rules analyst Dr. Joe Machnik believes the Saudi Arabia man should have been sent off. — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) September 27, 2022 Yedlin immediately makes way for Joe Scally, limping off the field gingerly. McKenzie replaces Aaron Long, while Jesus Ferreira takes over up front for Pepi. The starting U.S. striker had just 13 touches through an hour of action. 55th min: Paul Arriola generates a turnover deep in the attacking third, but his cross into the area sees nobody there to meet it. Joe Scally, Jesus Ferreira, and Mark McKenzie look like they’re getting ready to come on. 52nd min: Whatever changes Berhalter hoped to make at the break have not come to fruition. Saudi Arabia have had the lion’s share of possession to start the second half, just like they did to start the match. U.S. on the back foot, looking like they want to be anywhere else. 46th min: We’re back under way in Spain, and there’s some good news as Gregg Berhalter tells FOX sideline reporter Jenny Taft that Reyna’s substitution was “precautionary.” Moments later, U.S. Soccer confirmed that the 19-year-old felt “muscle tightness” so they brought him off. UPDATE: Gio Reyna was experiencing muscle tightness and came out of the match as a precaution. https://t.co/GET8j1zGc1 — U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team (@USMNT) September 27, 2022 HALFTIME: USA 0-0 Saudi Arabia A very, very concerning half from the United States. They started on the back foot, and eventually built into the match, but created precious few opportunities. Christian Pulisic is being hacked to pieces by Saudi Arabia, which he should be used to from CONCACAF matches, but the U.S. has not capitalized. The opponents missed a big chance too, which contributes to the feelings of disappointment at the break. We failed the test against a high pressing team. The test against a low block isn’t going well either. Oof For the record, I remain optimistic. #USMNT — Michael Parkhurst (@MFparkhurst) September 27, 2022 The injury to Gio Reyna is the talking point of the first half, as he was one of the best U.S. players in the first half. If it’s another muscle injury, he and fans will be severely disappointed given his history. The U.S. has not scored in 135 minutes of play in this international break, which will also make fans extremely nervous about the fast-approaching World Cup. There could be significant changes from Gregg Berhalter after the break as the head coach looks for some kind of attacking spark. Josh Sargent, Jesus Ferreira & Joe Scally stay on the field warming up at the half — Meg Swanick (@Meg_Swanick) September 27, 2022 43rd min: Pulisic is hacked on the edge of the penalty area, but no call, which is a consistent theme of this first half. A replay showed that not only was it a clear foul, but it was probably slightly inside the 18-yard box too. It’s unclear if these friendlies have VAR (the Japan game did have VAR available but the broadcasters didn’t even know it), but that probably should have been a penalty for the United States. 41st min: U.S. holding significant possession but struggling to bring the attackers into the flow of possession. Kellyn Acosta is flagged for offsides, ending the move. Meanwhile, U.S. Soccer has confirmed that the Reyna substitution was NOT pre-planned, which is obviously not good news for his health. USSF spokesperson says the Gio Reyna sub was not planned. Not great, obviously. — Paul Tenorio (@PaulTenorio) September 27, 2022 38th min: Tyler Adams and Christian Pulisic have been hacked incessantly in this first half, and the referee has not shown a single yellow card. U.S. players are getting increasingly frustrated. Saudi Arabia officially aware that they are not going to get yellows for anything. Late tackles on Weston and Christian (multiple times) and ref just asking for calm, basically. — Paul Tenorio (@PaulTenorio) September 27, 2022 34th min: Chance, Saudi Arabia! How did the Middle Eastern side not score??? Somehow, the ball can’t find the back of the net as the substitute Asiri carves through the penalty area. He fires off a shot that’s blocked, and the ball bobbles around, with Turner diving to make a stop and finally Arriola clearing. Complete mayhem, but still scoreless. — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) September 27, 2022 31th min: An all-too familiar sight for USMNT fans will make them sick just weeks before the World Cup. Gio Reyna is subbed off on the half-hour mark, with Paul Arriola coming on. The timing actually could lend itself to a pre-planned change, but Reyna heads right down the tunnel after coming off, which is a bad sign. Saudi Arabia makes a substitution as well, as Al-Najei comes off for Asiri Haitham. — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) September 27, 2022 Gio asked for the sub just before the free kick and he kicked it out of bounds to initiate the change so yeah I don’t think they planned to sub him off after 27 minutes. — scuffed (@scuffedpod) September 27, 2022 29th min: It’s Saudi Arabia’s turn for a dangerous free-kick, with a set-piece from atop the penalty area maybe five yards outside the box. A long wait for Turner to set the wall, and eventually it’s fired well over the crossbar, not threatening the U.S. goal. 27th min: Babhir chops down Sergino Dest and the U.S. have a dangerous free-kick. Those two were involved in a wrestling match on the touchline moments earlier, and it appeared then that the referee told Babhir no more, but he’s not cautioned for the most recent offense. The free-kick is collected by the Saudi Arabia goalkeeper. 24th min: Chance, USA! Pulisic brings u...

Color Stars Metaverse Adventure Continues With Promise To Make Smart Phones Defector
Color Stars Metaverse Adventure Continues With Promise To Make Smart Phones Defector
Color Star’s Metaverse Adventure Continues With Promise To Make Smart Phones – Defector https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/color-stars-metaverse-adventure-continues-with-promise-to-make-smart-phones-defector/ Color Star Technology Co., Ltd., the Cayman Islands-registered, possibly Dubai-based ready-mix concrete company that scrapped its legacy business and recently launched its own extremely janky digital metaverse, continues to struggle with executive turnover. On Aug. 5, Color Star quietly filed paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission noting that Biao Lu and Jehan Zeb Khan had resigned simultaneously from their roles as co-CEOs of this strange company, and were replaced by a man named Farhan Qadir. Even by the standards of Color Star, which has now had seven CEOs in just over two years, this is abrupt: Lu and Khan were on the job together for less than two months, and are not stepping back into support roles, but appear to be leaving the company altogether. For the record, this is now the second time that Biao Lu, who also resigned from his role as Chairman of the company’s board of directors, has resigned from the position of Color Star CEO. Followers of this extremely normal business story will recall that Color Star’s fascinating young CEO, Sir Lucas Capetian, the man who spearheaded the launch of the company’s signature Color World app, resigned suddenly and left the company due to “personal reasons” back in June. At Defector, this was a heartbreaking development: We’d worked diligently over a period of months to establish contact with Capetian, and had received nothing in return beyond a couple terse emails and the threat of a lawsuit. Now, suddenly, Capetian was out of our lives altogether, replaced at the top of this strange company by not one but two new corporate officers. What a time we’d had: It was during Capetian’s eventful stewardship that Color Star entered into the now-infamous sponsorship partnership with the Philadelphia 76ers, and it was Capetian who pivoted from the 76ers deal to a partnership with Villareal of Spain’s La Liga. It was Capetian himself who announced to the world that Color Star had formed a strategic partnership with a super-duper-real biotech company that could eventually give Color World users access to “human cloned organs.” To see this visionary jettisoned from the company he’d led in so many deranged new directions was like watching a beautiful star in the night sky suddenly blink out forever. Biao Lu and Jehan Zeb Khan did not immediately show their predecessor’s flair for Slick Business. The first news update posted to the company’s extraordinarily busted website (you’ve been warned) after the duo’s June takeover is headlined “Stop wasting time! This is enough~” and features another jarring 30-second video advertisement for the Color World app, with a strange and Cinquain-esque caption: Immersive visual experience, fresh and fun new sections, star entertainment, technological intelligence, and experience [color world] without leaving home. come, on! Hurry up and log in to the app store and download [chromeworld_metverse] Color Star Credit: Screenshot: Color Star Normal company. This inauspicious launch portended doom. Six days later, Lu and Khan resigned and were replaced by Qadir. Qadir appears to be a mover and shaker: Just over two weeks after taking the helm, Qadir attended a fancy event in Dubai where Color Star announced a “strategic cooperation” with something called Emirates Travellers. As with other recent Color Star partners, it’s not clear at all what Emirates Travellers sells or does, but it’s worth noting that the Color Star press release says the event was attended by members of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates. Neat! Then again, Color Star once announced that they would put likenesses of active 76ers players in their ugly metaverse, an overstatement that may have provided the 76ers organization the escape hatch they needed to parachute out of this hilariously ill-advised partnership agreement. One must never take at face value anything printed in a Color Star press release or advertorial. The purpose of the new partnership is unclear, but Color Star says their vaunted in-house tech team is busy building the “world’s first metaverse headquarters” for Emirates Travellers, which presumably will have the same Turok-gas-station aesthetic as the Color World shopping mall, announced back in June: Credit: Color Star It’s the mall. Just days after the glamorous Emirates Travellers announcement, Qadir was back at it, announcing on Sept. 6 a “long-term strategic cooperation” with something called Global Digital Club, which it describes as a “world-renowned professional digital investment club” with a membership of “powerful corporate elites in the global field.” In a startling twist, Global Digital Club has a functioning website and a little bit of an online footprint. In fact, they recently held a private investors event, featuring “business CEOs, venture capital funds, and investors” back on, ah, Sept. 11. Looks fun! But the biggest development of Color Star’s business was announced Monday, when the company issued a press release describing the upcoming launch of Color Star Technology Co., LTD-branded smart phones. These gizmos will be made in partnership with a company called Anex Korea, which Color Star describes as an “internationally renowned enterprise.” The “‘DONO’ Metaverse mobile phone,” as it is described in the announcement, will come preloaded with the Color World app, so that users can instantly log on and wander around the bleak, empty, bizarrely magenta-soaked digital landscape. “The mobile communication market is our latest new business sector, we are very happy about it, and are confident that we will develop this sector into maturity in the next few years,” says Qadir, via the press release. “While the outside world is focusing on the functions of the Metaverse, we will use mature and perfect technical means to escort users.” The bet seems to be that sooner or later one of these lurches is bound to pay off. Color Star recently executed something called a “reverse stock split” of shares of its ordinary stock, in order to consolidate the nearly 262 million shares of outstanding stock it’s distributed over the many years and permutations of its business. Reverse stock splits generally produce a bump in stock price, as sets of individual units at a certain market value are converted into one larger unit, maintaining all the consolidated market value. It’s a little artificial, yes, but Color Star’s stock has been trending in the wrong direction for years, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Unfortunately, in Color Star’s case, 40 shares individually worth approximately dog shit are being consolidated into one share of incredibly dense dog shit. This and Color Star’s more ambitious business moves have failed so far to generate enthusiasm among investors: CSCW stock has lost approximately 98 percent of its value over the past five years, and is now trading at a new low of $1.22 per share as of Tuesday afternoon. But just you wait until those hot Color Star smartphones hit the shelves. As their enthusiastic new CEO says, Color Star “is by no means a traditional technology company, and more we will combine our metaverse content with other businesses, which will find a broader market environment for us, and everything is possible.” That’s the spirit!
