Walmart Goes After Younger Customers By Putting Itself In The Metaverse – SiliconANGLE News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/walmart-goes-after-younger-customers-by-putting-itself-in-the-metaverse-siliconangle-news/ EMERGING TECH Walmart goes after younger customers by putting itself in the Metaverse Walmart Inc. today announced that it is launching two immersive experiences inside the ultra-popular online game Roblox, an effort the company hopes will attract a younger kind of shopper. These new virtual worlds will be called “Walmart Land” and “Walmart’s Universe of Play,” both of which won’t give players the ability to buy stuff in any actual Walmart store. The idea is to introduce kids to Walmart in what looks and feels like a cool Metaverse experience. The company said in Walmart Land, players will be able to wander around, collect virtual coins, and buy what Walmart is calling “verch.” These are virtual goods, but they align with things Walmart sells in its stores or online. Users can visit virtual islands where there might be music playing, with an island soon to come to the experience where players can try on clothes and fashion accessories. With a Roblox community of over 52 million daily users, this is how Walmart intends to bring the young to its stores. “We’re showing up in a big way – creating community, content, entertainment, and games through the launch of Walmart Land and Walmart’s Universe of Play,” said William White, chief marketing officer, Walmart U.S. “Roblox is one of the fastest growing and largest platforms in the metaverse, and we know our customers are spending loads of time there. So, we’re focusing on creating new and innovative experiences that excite them, something we’re already doing in the communities where they live, and now, the virtual worlds where they play.” Walmart’s Universe of Play will feature a number of challenges, all of which can earn the player more coins and trophies. There will be immersive games, a Walmart blimp will regularly drop toys, and throughout certain adventures, kids can get their hands on things such as hoverboards and what the company has called a Sharper Image drone. The move into the Metaverse is in line with Walmart’s venture into emerging technologies. Just recently the company announced a new digital product that combines augmented reality and artificial intelligence to give shoppers a realistic simulation of what clothing will look like on them. I am a snacker at my very core. Outside of my three meals a day, you’ll always find me either hoarding a big bag of chips while I watch Netflix or munching on some grapes and biccies while I work from home. The only trouble with this habit is that it often ends in one of two ways. A) with me being wholly doused in cheese powder or B) me finding my grubby, oily prints (and a whole lot of crumbs) sprawled all over my laptop keyboard or phone screen closely after. Sometimes both, if I’m being honest. That’s why, when I was served this legendary device on my TikTok FYP, I knew my manifestation crystals were doing something for me up there. Enter: finger chopsticks (aka the future, folks). To get down to the nitty-gritty of it, this little kitchen gadget is basically a tweezer and chopstick hybrid because it’s connected at the top and is small enough to fit between your pointer and middle finger. All you have to do is pull your fingers together, and it’ll allow you to pick up ample chips and other small snacks without the food actually ever touching your hands. This means long gone are the days of having an oil fest build up on your keys, nor having the tips of your fingers (and anything in a one-metre radius) turn bright orange from a bag of Extreme Cheese Doritos. @snack.stick Best purchase of 22 #fyp #gamer #worklife ♬ original sound – sweet bee I wouldn’t call myself a gamer (because Animal Crossing and Sims are the only two games in my arsenal), but loads of people in the comments are also saying this baby is the answer to gaming and snacking seamlessly, too. But I’ll let you all be the judge of that because here’s precisely where you can locate these gaming chopsticks, godsends: Snactiv Finger Snacking Tool Snactiv Snacking Tool, $43.80 As seen on that sick Shark Tank show where entrepreneurs come and pitch their cool business ideas, this device is deemed the official snacking tool on the market. It’s durable and sleek, and the ergonomic finger slot ensures comfortable wear for all users 13 and up. It’s also got rubber tips at each end to ensure they efficiently grip your snack of choice because nothing is worse than turning your snack session into that insufferable claw arcade game. The only issue is that this kitchen gadget is a bit pricey on Amazon, which seems to be the only retailer that stocks Snactiv down under. Free-Hands Finger Chopsticks Free-Hands Finger Chopsticks, $7.16 with the code ‘SVE20’ If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative that still does the job, this alternative kitchen gadget will be your ride-or-die, my friend. While it’s not made from the same bougie and ergonomic materials as the Snactiv option, it still seamlessly allows you to snack on your munchies without a hitch. The ends of these gaming chopsticks also don’t have rubber tips, but they boast a little cerated edge to ensure your snacks don’t just slip out of reach. This one retails for $7.16, but if you’re after a bulk order so your mates can get in on this, you can get a four-pack for $11.32, which means you get one for just $2.83. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com SEOUL, Sept 26 (Reuters) – Tensions over Taiwan have raised the thorny issue of whether U.S. troops based in South Korea would be involved in any conflict, with American and South Korean officials acknowledging that the peninsula could easily be dragged into a crisis. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol told CNN in an interview aired on Sunday that his country was keen to work with the United States to “expand freedom”, but that in a conflict over Taiwan, North Korea would be more likely to stage a provocation and that the alliance should focus on that first. North Korea has a mutual defence treaty with China and military analysts suggest it could coordinate with Beijing or take advantage of a crisis to pursue its own military goals. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Last week U.S. President Joe Biden said U.S forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, drawing an angry response from China and raising the stakes for U.S. allies that host American troops in the region. China is South Korea’s largest economic partner, and Seoul could find itself on the literal front lines of any regional military conflict. North Korea has backed China’s claims over Taiwan, and accused Washington of trying to build an “Asian NATO” that would import crises like the one in Ukraine to Asia. Yoon has vowed to forge closer ties with the United States, which has had a mutual defence treaty with South Korea since the 1950-1953 Korean War and stations around 28,500 troops in the country. But when asked whether South Korea will help the United States if China attacks Taiwan, Yoon did not directly answer. Last week the commander of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), General Paul LaCamera, said it was prudent to plan for all possibilities. “What begins in one region spreads very quickly within the region and around the world,” LaCamera told a seminar hosted by the Institute for Corean-American Studies (ICAS) on Tuesday. South Korean troops fought alongside Americans in Vietnam and supported the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but questions of future involvement are up to South Korea alone, LaCamera said. In response, South Korean Vice Defence Minister Shin Beom-chul told broadcaster MBC that there had been no such discussions between Washington and Seoul. “I can tell our citizens that we will ensure consultations would not move in a direction that undermines security on the Korean Peninsula,” he said. A USFK spokesman referred questions about its role in any regional conflict to the Indo-Pacific Command and the Pentagon, which did not immediately respond. South Korea’s Ministry of Defence also did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Privately, many South Korean military officials expect they could once again face off against China, with memories of Beijing’s intervention on the side of the North in the Korean War, said one former South Korean general. “They absolutely do not trust China, it’s something they feel in their bones,” he said. ‘STRATEGIC FLEXIBILITY’ In his confirmation hearing last year, LaCamera said he would seek to integrate USFK into “operational plans supporting U.S. interests and objectives in the region”. In 2006, amid Washington’s push to mobilise forces for the “war on terror”, Seoul agreed to “strategic flexibility” under which it would “understand”, but not necessarily support, the deployment of USFK units to other locations, as long as it is consulted, said Sungmin Cho, a professor at the Pentagon’s Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) in Hawaii. “(It’s) still ambiguous,” he said. “This needs to be talked out between Seoul and Washington.” Cho said North Korea could support China in a Taiwan conflict by launching an attack on South Korea, or simply use the conflict as a chance to push forward with its nuclear or missile development. USFK is heavily focused on land-based troops, which would be of limited use in a conflict that remains focused around the Taiwan Straight, said former General Park Cheol-kyun, who worked on international policy at South Korea’s Defense Ministry until May. “You need the navy, air force, and intelligence assets, so most of the U.S. forces that could contain or deter Chinese provocation, are mostly in Japan,” he said, but added that the U.S.-South Korea alliance can’t afford to ignore China’s role in the region. Science-Tech Firms Lapping Up Innovation Coupons – SHINE https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/science-tech-firms-lapping-up-innovation-coupons-shine/ The trial of science and technology innovation coupons for the Yangtze River Delta region has started, and 33 companies based in Qingpu District have already redeemed the coupons worth 12.5 million yuan (US$1.78 million). The trial is being conducted by the region’s science and technology authorities and the Yangtze River Delta Ecology and Greenery Integration Demonstration Zone in Shanghai’s Qingpu District, Wujiang District of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, Jiashan County in Zhejiang Province, and Ma’anshan City in Anhui Province. As the first district in Shanghai to be involved in the trial, Qingpu is actively promoting its implementation. Among the 33 companies who have redeemed the coupons, 15 have made 3.04 million yuan in payments with coupons to purchase services from 12 agencies. Rigger Micro Technologies is a service provider for high-end chip packaging and testing. With the innovation coupon service platform, the company found Shanghai BeiXin Semiconductor Technology Co Ltd, which provides an integrated circuit analysis service. Zhuo Jianfang, a project manager of Rigger, said the service fee totaled 186,000 yuan with 46,000 yuan covered by the coupons, which significantly cut the time on project research and development as well as labor costs. The innovation coupon platform offers a good opportunity for companies to find partners for joint development. The business of Shanghai Jiyan Biomedical Development Co Ltd, a high-tech company established in 2019, involves the research and production of pharmaceutical intermediates. It commissions Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology Co Ltd to conduct the research and preparation of various traditional Chinese medicine and plant extracts to be used in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics areas. As a small company, it has to deal with difficulties regarding funding and laboratory equipment. The innovation coupon platform offers it good opportunities to find partners for joint development. So far, it has consumed 1 million yuan in coupons, significantly relieving its funding pressure. Research and development of medicine and relevant products require a big investment in staff, pharmaceutical equipment, and testing instruments, which hinders project development and manufacturing, particularly for newly established companies, leading to their development bottleneck. Qu Liping, a project leader at Shanghai Jiyan Biomedical Development Co Ltd, said service agencies listed on the platform not only provide innovative technology services but also satisfy the demands of users and tackle their real problems during product research and development, enabling them to put their limited funds into the manufacturing and marketing of products. The science and technology commission of Qingpu District particularly supports companies registered in the district to apply for six types of services such as technology research and development, testing, technology transfer and resource sharing. It has selected 521 agencies based in the Yangtze River Delta region, more than 9,000 service items and 24,000 big instruments for Qingpu companies to make cross-area purchases within the platform.

Gaming Magazine Names Ilani ‘best Casino’ For Sixth-Straight Year – The Reflector https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/gaming-magazine-names-ilani-best-casino-for-sixth-straight-year-the-reflector/ The Reflector The streak of top-place success for ilani continues this year as the casino resort received the title of “best casino” in the Native Northwest category for the sixth year from Casino Player Magazine, ilani announced this month. Casino Player Magazine bestowed 18 awards on ilani for its 2022 Best of Gaming Awards released this month, according to a news release from the casino. The Native Northwest category covers dozens of casinos in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, according to the magazine. The casino has received the accolade every year since it opened its doors in 2017. In 2021, ilani won “best overall gaming resort” from the magazine. At the time of that award, the magazine highlighted ilani’s 100,000 square feet of gaming space, nearly 3,000 slot machines, 75 tables and 15 restaurants, bars and retail shops. The casino still placed in the top-three for overall gaming resort this year, taking second place, the release stated. This year ilani received eight first-place rankings including best video slots, best high limit room and best VIP lounge and services, among others, according to the release. The casino was honored to have received the numerous awards, ilani President and General Manager Kara Fox-LaRose stated in the release. “With such commendable recognition from Casino Player’s readers, ilani is continuing to rise to new heights in its ability to create memorable experiences for its valued guests,” Fox-LaRose stated. The Cowlitz Indian Tribe’s casino is up against several establishments in the Native Northwest category that feature one thing ilani doesn’t currently have — a hotel. That will change soon as the casino plans to open its 14-story, 300-room hotel next year.

Gas Prices Edge Up In Wisconsin Across Nation Beloit Daily News
Gas Prices Edge Up In Wisconsin, Across Nation – Beloit Daily News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/gas-prices-edge-up-in-wisconsin-across-nation-beloit-daily-news/ MADISON—Gas prices are rising in Wisconsin and across the nation. Prices at the gas pump rose a nickel over the past week, as the national average gas price hit $3.72 per gallon. The main reason is higher regional prices on the West Coast and the Midwest due to refinery issues ranging from planned maintenance to a fire, according to a news release from the AAA—The Auto Club Group. But low domestic demand as fewer drivers fuel up and much lower oil prices have helped to blunt some of the impact. On Friday, the price of oil slipped below $80 a barrel for the first time since January, primarily due to fears of a recession-led global economic slowdown.

Arizona Abortion Clinics Send Women To Other States – National Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/arizona-abortion-clinics-send-women-to-other-states-national-post/ Author of the article: The Associated Press Jonathan J. Cooper And Terry Tang PHOENIX (AP) — When an Arizona judge ruled last week that prosecutors can resume enforcing a near-total ban on abortion that dates to the Civil War, it fell to the staff at Camelback Family Planning to break the news to the women scheduled for appointments in the coming weeks. The staff faced “crying, a lot of very, very angry people, denial,” nurse Ashleigh Feiring said Monday. One woman argued, “But I’m only five weeks (along).” NP Posted Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the National Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc. Postmedia Network Inc. | 365 Bloor Street East, Toronto, Ontario, M4W 3L4 | 416-383-2300 Women seeking abortions across Arizona were forced to find alternatives beyond the state’s borders after the ruling, which clears the way for prosecutors to charge doctors and others who help a woman end a pregnancy unless her life is in danger. The state’s major abortion providers immediately halted procedures and canceled appointments. Advertisement 2 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Providers in neighboring states, already seeing an increase in traffic from other conservative states that have banned abortion, were preparing to treat some of the 13,000 Arizona patients who get an abortion each year. Planned Parenthood Arizona on Monday asked Pima County Superior Court Judge Kellie Johnson to put her ruling on hold pending an appeal, saying it created confusion about the status of the law in Arizona. Lawyers cited conflicts created by the abortion ban dating to 1864, a more recent law banning abortions after 15 weeks, and a variety of other laws regulating the processes and paperwork when terminating pregnancies. Johnson’s ruling lifted an injunction that was imposed after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision guaranteed a right to abortion in 1973. Advertisement 3 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. At the Camelback Family Planning clinic in central Phoenix, a young woman took off from work Monday afternoon for an appointment to get medicine to help with an abortion. The 20-year-old is afraid she is prone to miscarriage and already miscarried two years ago. “I don’t want to experience this. I don’t have the time and energy to go through that again,” said the woman, who declined to give her name. But she never made it past the check-in window. Instead, she got a slip of paper with a website to order medicine by mail and left visibly upset. She says she never got a call that the ruling by a Tucson judge last Friday effectively voided her ability to get an abortion in Arizona. “I can guarantee I would not have wasted my time leaving work early and losing money to come here,” the woman said. “I need to get it done –regardless if that’s going to a different state or going across the border. It just sucks that this is the last resort for people.” Advertisement 4 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The doctors and nurses at Camelback Family Planning had an inkling last week that a court decision on abortion could come down. But they thought it would be a ban on abortions after 15 weeks into pregnancy. So, several of the abortions performed last week were for patients over 20 weeks along. “We cleared our schedule to do as many of those later-term ones,” said Feiring, the nurse. So they postponed some patients less farther along until this week. Feiring and other staff at the Phoenix clinic are letting patients know the clinic is still available to do follow-up abortion care. They refer them to websites and organizations that help with abortion access. Planned Parenthood has patient navigators who work with women seeking abortions to find an affiliate in a state where abortion is legal, and to help with money and logistics, said Brittany Fonteno, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona. Many Arizona patients are getting abortions in California, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado. Advertisement 5 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. “This is really a traumatic experience, to be told that one day a basic health care procedure is available to you and then out of the blue the next day it’s been stripped away from you and has the potential to completely alter the course of your life,” Fonteno said. In California, the second-largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the country says it is considering opening a new health center in part because of an expected increase in patients from Arizona and other states. Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino counties operates nine health centers in Southern California that catered to 250,000 medical visits last year — largely for services other than abortion, like cancer screenings and birth control, according to Nichole Ramirez, the group’s senior vice president for communications. Advertisement 6 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The group started preparing for an influx of patients from other states last year by hiring more providers, offering more abortion appointment slots and helping patients pay for things like gas, hotel rooms and plane tickets. “We knew this was going to happen slowly, in a way, as state by state has been banning abortion,” Ramirez said. “The number is going to continue to increase.” California is already seeing evidence of an increase in abortion patients coming from other states. Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new website — abortion.ca.gov — that promotes all of the state’s abortion services, including a list of clinics and information about state laws. On Monday, the Governor’s Office said the website — while not tracking and storing people’s personal information — had seen an increase in out-of-state page views, with about 58% of traffic coming from people in other states. That increase comes after Newsom used some of his campaign money to pay for billboards in seven conservative states to promote the website. Advertisement 7 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Meanwhile, a California Access Reproductive Justice — a nonprofit that helps people pay for the logistics of getting an abortion — said 10 of the 63 people it helped in August were from Arizona. Shannon Brewer, director of Las Cruces Women’s Health Organization that operates an abortion clinic in southern New Mexico, says she anticipates a surge in inquiries about abortion services from residents of Arizona, a two-hour drive away at minimum. The clinic already received nearly a dozen queries Monday from people in Arizona. Brewer previously operated the abortion clinic in Jackson, Mississippi, that was at the center of the Dodds v Jackson Women’s Health decision that took away women’s constitutional protection for access to abortions nationwide. The Mississippi clinic has closed, while the like-named clinic in New Mexico has treated about 100 abortion patients during its first six weeks in operation. Advertisement 8 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. “The majority of our calls are from out-of-state, mostly Texas. The majority of our patients are from Texas,” Brewer said Monday. “I expect the same thing” from Arizona. Most abortion procedures remain legal in New Mexico, where state lawmakers in 2021 repealed a dormant 1969 statute that outlawed most abortion procedures as felonies to ensure access to abortion. —— Associated Press writer Morgan Lee in Santa Fe, New Mexico, contributed. From Mjolnir To Batarangs: 10 Of The Coolest Weapons Seen In Superhero Movies – Collider https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/from-mjolnir-to-batarangs-10-of-the-coolest-weapons-seen-in-superhero-movies-collider/ With She-Hulk currently racing towards its finale and Werewolf By Night recently receiving overwhelmingly positive first reactions, superhero properties continue to cast a large shadow over pop culture. Not to mention, the highly anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Black Adam arrive in theaters very soon. Discourse about superhero films is constantly ongoing. Fans like to debate the best characters, the best villains, and even, in this case, the coolest weapons and gadgets seen in superhero films. Batarangs As far as superheroes go, they do not get any cooler than Batman. The character has been a staple of movies, TV, comics, and video games for several decades now, and with Gotham Knights and The Batman Two on the way, Bruce Wayne isn’t going away anytime soon, either. None of the many weapons and gadgets wielded by Batman are as effective, simple, and fun as the Batarang. If you’ve ever played any Arkham games, you’ve likely wasted hours repeatedly throwing Batarangs at low-level thugs to frighten them. Cap’s Shield To put it simply, Cap’s shield defines the character. It symbolizes pride, patriotism, and the unstoppable desire to do what is right. The ownership of said shield was hotly debated during the Disney+ series, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. By the time the series concluded, however, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) embraced the Captain America mantle and held the shield with pride. Though his time with the shield was limited in the series, we expect to see him unleashing star-spangled fury when Captain America: New World Orderhits theaters in 2024. Lasso of Truth Image via HBO Max Perhaps one of the most unique weapons on this list, Wonder Woman’s Lasso Of Truth is an object of incredible power. The magical golden object forces anybody captured within it to obey the wielder’s commands and tell the truth. The Lasso of Truth is Diana Princes’ (Gal Gadot) main weapon in the DCEU. In addition to striking fear into the hearts of villains everywhere, it has also occasionally been played for laughs. Hopefully, the Lasso will continue to play a big role in Diana’s crime-fighting when she returns to the big screen in the upcoming Wonder Woman 3. Mjolnir Mjolnir is not only a weapon of nearly unthinkable power but also completely fair. The hammer can only be wielded by a being who is worthy of its power, and in the entirety of the MCU thus far, only three people have managed to wield Mjolnir. Thor was devastated when Mjolnir was crushed in the hands of Hela, but he was blown away when he discovered that Mjolnir had reformed and was now being wielded by his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Though it is unclear if Mjolnir will return to the MCU, we sure hope we haven’t seen the last of that faithful hammer. The Cloak of Levitation Image via Marvel The Cloak of Levitation is clothing, magical artifact, and trusty companion all rolled into one. The cloak has saved Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) life on multiple occasions. It’s hard to think of a Doctor Strange appearance in which The Cloak Of Levitation hasn’t come to the rescue of the former Sorcerer Supreme. The cloak will certainly continue saving Doctor Strange’s life, but we’re still sad that the Infinity War scene in which Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and Doctor Strange swapped costumes was cut. The Batmobile This one’s pretty self-explanatory. Like everybody has a favorite Batman, we all have a favorite Batmobile. It doesn’t matter the decade, the generation, or the director; the Batmobile always has been and will always be the coolest car in cinema history. Though it often looks different from film to film, there are some things the Batmobile always is. It’s always fast. It’s always armed to the teeth. And it always comes in black. The Batmobile will return to our screens in the upcoming The Flash movie, perhaps even two different iterations of the beloved car. Stormbreaker Image via Disney Like Batman, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has a badass and extensive arsenal. After Mjolnir was destroyed, fans assumed there was no way the MCU could give the God of Thunder an equally cool weapon. Thankfully, Thor knows Eitri (Peter Dinklage), a dwarf with the knowledge and skillset required to build an axe that can not only summon the Bifrost but also kill Thanos (Josh Brolin). Seeing Thor’s two weapons fight for his affection is one of the best jokes in Thor: Love and Thunder, and hopefully, Stormbreaker will be functioning as normal when we next see Thor. The Hulkbuster Building a suit capable of going toe to toe with the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is something that only Tony Stark could accomplish. Of course, it doesn’t contain the Hulk quite as quickly as Tony planned, leaving considerable collateral damage in their wake. Of course, the Hulkbuster suit is redeemed when, years later, it is worn by Bruce Banner himself. Given that he can’t turn into the Hulk, a suit capable of kicking the Hulk’s ass is the second-best option. It proves to be a reliable option, too, with Bruce playing a significant role in the battle of Wakanda before the Avengers’ eventual loss. Hawkeye’s Trick Arrows Image via Disney The Hawkeye Disney+ series was a lot of fun. It was filled with festive cheer, lovable new characters, unexpected introductions, and, perhaps best of all, more trick arrows than you could count. Perhaps most memorably, one arrow contained Pym particles which Clint (Jeremy Renner) used to shoot another arrow, enlarging it massively and sending it crashing down into a car full of bad guys. The trick arrows provided the series with some incredibly memorable fight scenes and set pieces, and audiences hope to see more of this whenever Clint and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) return to action. Trident of Neptune (Bernadette) Image Via Warner Bros. Jason Momoa is effortlessly cool, so it should be no surprise that his take on Arthur Curry is one of the slickest superheroes to grace the big screen. Very few actors out there could pull off a gold and green superhero costume, but Momoa does so without even trying. His Arthur is charming, bold, and endearingly brave. It may have taken him a while to find the Trident Oo Neptune, which Momoa lovingly refers to as Bernadette, but it was well worth the wait. The Trident is the perfect weapon for Aquaman. The mystical weapon is powerful and enchanted, often strong enough to harm the New Gods and a symbol of the ruler of Atlantis. Have Helium Leaders Been Lining Their Own Pockets While Not Delivering On Product? – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/have-helium-leaders-been-lining-their-own-pockets-while-not-delivering-on-product-cryptonews/ Source: Adobe/FellowNeko Executives at Helium (HNT), a developer of a “decentralized wireless infrastructure,” as well as their family and friends, hoarded the majority of wealth at the project’s launch, claims Forbes. This is a $1.2 billion web3 company that said it was building a global wireless internet connection called the “People’s Network.” Helium COO Frank Mong wrote that one of the tenets of the Helium network is fairness, saying that “everyone has an equal opportunity to mine.” But Forbes has painted a very different picture of the company – an antonym of fair. Per its report, the People’s Network users have seen “vanishingly small crypto rewards,” claiming that, “Helium has made a handful of people disproportionately rich: its executives and their friends.” Lee Reiners, Policy Director at the Duke Financial Economics Center, who teaches cryptocurrency law at Duke Law, was quoted by the news outlet as saying that, “This thing was set up to enrich the founders and early supporters at the expense of everyday people.” Forbes claims to have reviewed “hundreds of leaked internal documents” and transaction data, and that it interviewed five former Helium employees, finding that, despite the project insiders promoting democracy and fairness, a majority of wealth generated in the earliest days of the project, when it was the most lucrative, went to these insiders. The authors claim to have identified 30 digital wallets that appear to be connected to Helium employees, their friends, family, and early investors. These wallets show HNT 3.5 million mined, which is almost half of all tokens mined within the first three months of the network’s launch in August 2019. Then, within six months, more than a quarter of all HNT had been mined by insiders — valued at some $250 million during the token’s peak last year. After the crash, the tokens are still worth $21 million. The authors claim that, “While Helium and its executives have publicly discussed their incentive plan — a scheme called Helium Security Tokens, or HST, which guarantees about a third of all HNT for insiders — they haven’t previously disclosed the additional windfall taken from Helium’s public token supply, worth millions, that was identified by Forbes.” This means that, when Helium rewards per hotspot hit their all-time high, a bit more than 30% went to the community, while insiders claimed the rest. Each hotspot earned an average HNT 33,000 in August 2019, while each hotspot today only earns around HNT 2 a month. So, the executives, friends, family, and certain early investors made windfalls in addition to the guaranteed dividends before earnings plummeted. The article also claims that some insiders exploited vulnerabilities known to the company to further fill their bags. ‘Nothing unreasonable’ That said, Amir Haleem, Helium’s co-founder and CEO, described the project on Discord, as “by far the most fair token distribution of any project that I’m aware of.” Haleem further said in an interview that approximately half of the initial hotspots were distributed to employees, and their family and friends. “None of those numbers feel unreasonable to me or egregious in any way,” he told Forbes. However, a hotspot linked to Haleem’s wife displayed the coordinates of a California home the couple owned, and five hotspots connected to this wallet mined HNT 250,000 in the network’s first three months – earning a total HNT 455,000 from mining rewards, worth $25 million at HNT’s peak price, and $2 million today. It is unclear when or if Haleem sold these tokens and he declined to comment, the authors said. Another example is that of COO Frank Mong. Per Forbes, in a single day in August 2021, a wallet that appears connected to Mong received almost a dozen payments – worth nearly $1 million – from two other wallets linked to him. The sum was moved to a Binance wallet. Asked if Helium should have disclosed to the community this additional insider windfall, Haleem replied that, “I don’t know why we would be asked to be in a position to reveal anything about these people…They took an enormous risk and a huge chance on paying money to build something.” Haleem claimed that some crypto projects reserve as much as 90% of initial token supplies for investors and team members, which Forbes could not substantiate, and Haleem allegedly did not provide an example. “That’s the playing field that we’re always on in crypto, whether rightly or wrongly,” he said. “The generally accepted reality is that someone has to start the network.” More than one alleged issue Helium also seems to be struggling to generate revenue from its network, claimed Forbes, adding that, between June 2021 and August 2022, just $92,000 in revenue was generated from data moving across the network – compared to the $250 million the parent company has raised from investors. Helium generates the vast majority of its revenue from people registering their new hotspots and authenticating other devices on the network. Source: Forbes The company may have also exaggerated the nature of some of its partnerships, with Helium subsequently removing certain companies from their website where they had been displayed as customers. Though the money + hype poured in, however, we found that Helium only generated $92K from its network being used over the past ~year. Just $1500 for the month of August. Meanwhile, its community has purchased more than $500M worth of hotspots, and their rewards have plummeted. pic.twitter.com/lYBZguVieN — sarah emerson (@SarahNEmerson) September 23, 2022 Helium is backed by Andreessen Horowitz and Tiger Global, among other investors. Neither of these companies appeared in the early insider group, said Forbes. At noon UTC on Monday, HNT is trading at $4.52. It’s up nearly 1% in a day and 14% in a week. It’s down 24% in a month, 74% in a year, and 92% since its all-time high of $54.88 recorded in November 2021. The company says it is currently building Helium 5G, collaborating with wireless carriers DISH and T-Mobile, while they also announced the launch of the MOBILE token to reward hotspot owners for building the 5G ecosystem. And while some applauded Forbes’ report: Others criticized it: I read it twice. They “reported” and “investigated” nothing. They know nothing about the network or how it functions. They don’t even understand how radio waves work lmao. Forbs and these “writers” are trying to cash in on the noise. Funny how they wanna talk after T-Mobile deal. — Crypto_Zonk (@therunningman__) September 25, 2022 ____

Nigerian State Official Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison For Stealing U.S. Disaster Aid And Taxpayer Refunds – Department Of Justice https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/nigerian-state-official-sentenced-to-5-years-in-prison-for-stealing-u-s-disaster-aid-and-taxpayer-refunds-department-of-justice/ Tacoma – A 45-year-old resident of Lekki, Nigeria, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to 5 years in prison for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for his attempt to steal nearly $2.4 million from the United States government, including approximately $500,000 in pandemic-related unemployment benefits, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.  At the time of his arrest, Abidermi Rufai was the Special Assistant to the Governor of Nigeria’s Ogun State.  He admitted a long history of using stolen identities to defraud U.S. disaster programs, including aid for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and file fraudulent U.S. tax returns.  At the sentencing hearing U.S. District Judge Benjamin H. Settle said, “The motivation was greed, unrestrained greed, and a callousness towards those who have suffered.” “Mr. Rufai was relentless in his scheme to use the stolen identities of Americans for fraud,” said U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.  “He orchestrated ‘mystery shopper’ scams, business email compromise attempts, and filed fake tax returns to financially harm individuals and businesses. But when disaster struck, so did Mr. Rufai. Whether it was hurricane disaster relief, small business loans, or COVID unemployment benefits, he stole aid that should have gone to disaster victims in the United States.” ”Abdemi Rufai chose to exploit the pandemic for personal gain, using stolen identities of Americans to support his lavish lifestyle overseas,” said Associate Deputy Attorney General Kevin Chambers, the Justice Department‘s Director of COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office and their law enforcement partners did exceptional work bringing this defendant to justice. The Department will continue to pursue fraudsters who abused these programs and seek to recover their ill-gotten gains, whether they are in the United States or overseas.” According to records filed in the case, since 2017, Rufai stole the personal identifying information of more than 20,000 Americans to submit more than $2 million in claims for federally funded disaster relief benefits and fraudulent tax returns.  The various agencies involved paid out more than $600,000. The largest amount of fraud was committed against the Washington State Employment Security Department, which paid out $350,763 in fraudulent pandemic unemployment claims to accounts controlled by Rufai.  Rufai also submitted fraudulent pandemic unemployment claims in at least 17 other states.  “The Employment Security Department deeply appreciates the tireless efforts of the Department of Justice, federal agencies and law enforcement in this matter,” said Cami Feek, Commissioner for the Employment Security Department. “We always stand ready to hold those accountable who steal public funds and we appreciate the partnership in catching and prosecuting this individual.” Rufai also defrauded the Small Business Administration (SBA) by attempting to obtain Economic Injury Disaster loans (EIDL) tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Between April 8, 2020, and June 26, 2020, he submitted 19 fraudulent EIDL applications.  SBA paid out $10,000 based on the applications. Between 2017 and 2020, Rufai attempted to obtain more than $1.7 million in IRS tax refunds by submitting 675 false claims.  The IRS paid out $90,877 on these claims. Rufai’s efforts to exploit disaster in the United States did not start with COVID-19.  In September and October 2017, he submitted 49 disaster relief claims connected to Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.  He filed $24,500 in false claims and was paid on 13 claims totaling $6,500. In asking for a nearly six-year prison sentence Assistant United States Attorney Cindy Chang noted that Rufai’s scheme damaged real people who needed help. “In this case, Rufai successfully used the stolen identities of at least 238 real individuals who qualified for disaster aid and may have needed it urgently. This number does not account for the number of stolen identities Rufai attempted to use but failed.” Rufai has agreed to pay full restitution of $604,260 to the defrauded agencies, however he has not fully cooperated with efforts to identify and forfeit assets that could be used for restitution. “Mr. Rufai did not care if the disaster was the pandemic or a hurricane, or if the victim was a hard-working American taxpayer, a small business, or the U.S. government,” said Richard A. Collodi, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle Field Office. “He could have used his influence to be a role model in his community. Instead, he stole the identities of Washington state residents and money meant for those in need.” “Mr. Rufai said, ‘The choices we make are ultimately our responsibility,’ and he is correct. This sentence is a result of the culmination of choices he made funding his luxurious lifestyle. His fraud schemes began with filing fraudulent tax returns from stolen identities to pilfering economic aid designed to help disadvantaged workers and families suffering through the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Seattle Field Office Special Agent in Charge Bret Kressin. “IRS-CI continues to provide our financial expertise to investigate large-scale fraud with our law enforcement partners.” “Rufai used stolen personal identifying information of thousands of Americans in order to defraud more than $600,000 in government benefits, including approximately $350,000 from the Washington Employment Security Department.  We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to aggressively investigate and prosecute those who defrauded unemployment insurance programs during the global health crisis,” said Quentin Heiden, Special Agent-in-Charge of the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General, Los Angeles Region. Abidemi Rufai has been in custody since his arrest at New York’s JFK airport in May 2021.   The Eastern District of New York U.S. Attorney’s Office assisted with detention hearings following Rufai’s arrest. This case was investigated by the FBI, with assistance from the Department of Labor Office of Inspector General, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations, Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General, and the United States Small Business Administration Office of the Inspector General, and the Washington Employment Security Department (ESD). The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Cindy Chang and Seth Wilkinson of the Western District of Washington. On May 17, 2021, the Attorney General established the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force to marshal the resources of the Department of Justice in partnership with agencies across government to enhance efforts to combat and prevent pandemic-related fraud. The Task Force bolsters efforts to investigate and prosecute the most culpable domestic and international criminal actors and assists agencies tasked with administering relief programs to prevent fraud by augmenting and incorporating existing coordination mechanisms, identifying resources and techniques to uncover fraudulent actors and their schemes, and sharing and harnessing information and insights gained from prior enforcement efforts. For more information on the department’s response to the pandemic, please visit https://www.justice.gov/coronavirus. Anyone with information about allegations of attempted fraud involving COVID-19 can report it by calling the Department of Justice’s National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF) Hotline via the NCDF Web Complaint Form at https://www.justice.gov/disaster-fraud/ncdf-disaster-complaint-form.

UQ Startup Acquired By Pfizer UQ News University Of Queensland
UQ Startup Acquired By Pfizer – UQ News – University Of Queensland https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/uq-startup-acquired-by-pfizer-uq-news-university-of-queensland/ Global biopharmaceutical company Pfizer has acquired University of Queensland startup ResApp Health Limited for $179 million. ResApp, an ASX-listed company based in Brisbane, has developed simple and inexpensive smartphone technology that can accurately identify respiratory diseases based on cough analysis. UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the acquisition, finalised yesterday, was an outstanding outcome for the company, the University and the associated researchers. “The value of translating research into new point of care diagnostics to improve healthcare on a global scale cannot be understated,” Professor Terry said. UQ’s commercialisation company UniQuest licensed the UQ technology to ResApp in September 2014. The technology records a patient’s cough on a smartphone and analyses sounds and simple symptoms, such as a runny nose, to diagnose and measure the severity of a range of chronic and acute diseases. They include asthma, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, croup and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. ResApp recently announced positive results for its COVID-19 screening test. Clinical trials are continuing and the company said if successful the technology could potentially reduce the number of PCR and rapid antigen tests used worldwide. The UQ technology licenced to ResApp was developed by Associate Professor Udantha Abeyratne and his team at UQ’s School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. “We worked closely with paediatricians and respiratory physicians to develop the diagnostic technology,” Dr Abeyratne said. The technology has received global awards and recognition, including a prestigious Global Grand Challenges grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.   UniQuest CEO Dr Dean Moss said he had watched the growth of the health-tech company keenly. “This is one of the most exciting Australian biotech deals to come out of university research,” Dr Moss said. “It’s rewarding that the company’s technological breakthroughs have attracted this significant international backing.” ResAppDx is CE Marked in the European Union and TGA approved in Australia. How Squad 51 Vs. The Flying Saucers Throws Back To 1950s Era UFO Movies Shacknews
How Squad 51 Vs. The Flying Saucers Throws Back To 1950s Era UFO Movies Shacknews
How Squad 51 Vs. The Flying Saucers Throws Back To 1950s Era UFO Movies – Shacknews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-squad-51-vs-the-flying-saucers-throws-back-to-1950s-era-ufo-movies-shacknews/ The 1950s was an unforgettable period in the age of film. Society was growing increasingly fascinated by science fiction. Specifically, people were starting to get into UFOs and aliens. Over a decade after the famous War of the Worlds radio broadcast, film was starting to explore the outer cosmos, albeit with far more primitive resources. Spaceships were just small crafts held up by strings. Fearsome alien beasts were just guys in hokey rubber suits. The 1950s sci-fi movement in film was a sign of those times and one that the developers at Loomiarts and Fehorama Filmes were eager to recapture in Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers. The trailer above was a captivating watch. At first, one watches it waiting for the 1950s film effects to stop and for the gameplay to kick in. That’s when the realization sets in that the 1950s black-and-white, grainy film setting is the gameplay. That makes Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers one of the most visually riveting titles to come along in quite some time, which is why Shacknews reached out to the developers to learn more about its conception, its inspirations, and just how this space shooter came together. Shacknews: How long has the team been working on Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers? Giordano Gio, Executive Producer at Fehorama Filmes: Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers was envisioned by Márcio [Rosa] many years ago. He’s been developing it since 2016, first all by himself. Throughout the years, many partners came onboard. The cutscenes director Felipe Iesbick, the sound crew led by KF Studios, the composer Renan Franzen. Our film company, Fehorama Filmes, became partners with Loomiarts in this project in 2018, when we shot the live-action cutscenes. In 2020, we finally closed the deal with our main publisher WhisperGames, which allowed us to finally gather a larger team to finish the development of all the remaining levels and also to complete the post-production of our cutscenes, alongside Forno VFX, the company who filled the green screens with the landscapes, cityscapes and aircrafts that surround the actors. So, it’s been almost seven years, with a few setbacks, during a very difficult political and economical time here in Brazil, but we’re very proud of everyone’s work in the project, and happy to finally showing Marcio’s creation to the world. Source: Assemble Entertainment Shacknews: Before even getting into the “how” of how you put this together, I want to take a sidestep to talk about the research put into this project. What old-timey sci-fi movies and TV shows did you watch that ultimately helped with the game’s aesthetic? Márcio Rosa, Creator at Loomiarts: Our focus was cinema, not much TV. Sometimes, not even exactly from that era, we have some big famous productions from the 40s or 60s being referenced as some sort of an easter egg. But, of course, the sci-fis from the fifties were our main goal. Some with a more similar premise, like a war between humans and aliens, others with other kinds of menace, others with a smaller scale. Obviously, we have famous flying saucer movies like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still. Also, monster movies like The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, The Thing From Outer Space, It Came from Outer Space or other Jack Arnold’s movies, Godzilla and other of the movies directed by Ishiro Honda, Kaitiki and Planet of the Vampires, which was also directed by Mario Bava and was not exactly from this era, but has nice old-style visuals. Not of This Earth, This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, When Worlds Collide… all of it had some influence. Shacknews: How did you do this, from a visual standpoint? How did you put this together, where you’re basically playing in an old movie with set pieces held up by strings, everything’s made of cardboard, and the monsters are people in cheap rubber suits? Rosa: Since we are making a game, it’s impossible to fully get away from a “digital looking,” which is the opposite of these handcraft, analog cinema from decades ago. But, as soon as we “get” what makes a movie from the 50s look that way, we tried to reproduce small little pieces of it into the game. Me and the cinematographer of the cutscenes, for example, worked together to create a shader to reproduce the film grain of the celluloid. We thought the Unreal Engine’s built-in effect was too digital. Although the game may run at 60 FPS, we had animations and some effects, like these post processing shaders, running at 24 or 12. We use disproportional pyrotechnics and exaggerated physics movements to simulate miniatures from an era where many professions still didn’t know how to record the footage in the correct speed to hide the usage of small objects. We have pre-rendered backgrounds in 2D to simulate mattes. We didn’t have enough budget to actually work with paints, but using static images already gave some idea of it. Sometimes, we had even to control the quality of the art direction; the fifties were before Kubrick’s 2001 with its very detailed tech stuff, so ships and futuristic gadgets were way simpler than today’s standards, more like plastic or wooden toys. Sometimes, [they were] even silly. The monster is a good example. We’ve tried to use animations and a proportion that fits a human inside the costume, but the company that made the monster for us had some initial difficulty to not make it too good-looking. After they gave us some alternative designs, the less cool for modern standards was chosen, and even after that, some small adjustments were made, like changing the very well made eyes to a more simple “two white spheres with a dot in the middle.” Shacknews: I’m just as impressed by the audio quality. You nailed those early days of raw, 50s era Hi-Fi audio. How did you approach the audio process for this specific project? Rosa: The sound department was handled by KF Studios, an external company that has great structure and expertise in filmmaking. They made many movies and TV shows along the years, but this was actually the first time they made a game. Still, they manage to learn all the tech that was new to them and implement the sound directly into the game. I think I worked close to them more than anyone else in this project, personally. We’ve discussed a lot of things, from technical stuff to artistic decisions. We used all movie references to create the sound design and music, but we also made adaptations when needed, since the game is much more frenetic and noisy than the references we had. Of course, our musician, Renan Franzen, not only created hours of music tracks, but also helped to put everything together. It was a very nice process that included listening sections in the studio, to take notes regarding the sound mixing or filters to be applied to make the game sound “old.” Source: Assemble Entertainment Shacknews: Tell me about the FMV cutscenes you put together. Where did you record them and what were the challenges in making it look like a production from 70 years ago? Gio: When Márcio showed us the project, we’ve talked about how the perfect way to do it would be by replicating 1950s physical effects and scenography, which was also the director Felipe Iesbick’s intention. However, as a small indie, almost-no-budget production in Brazil, it’d be a very difficult goal to achieve. We gathered a large team of artists, from great actors to makeup artists, to reach the best result possible according to Marcio’s references from the atomic age. Of course, at first it was a hard decision to shoot it all on green screen instead of building the scenery and it was a big challenge for everyone involved, since most of the cast and crew was working with chroma-key for the first time. When our visual effects artists from Forno VFX came onboard to give life to Marcio’s vision on the 1950s Planet Earth and Vega Corporation’s machinery, we were confident that we made the right choice. Shacknews: The instinct in gaming is to always go cutting edge. It’s to use techniques from today or, if you’re aiming for a retro audience, use ideas from the 80s and 90s. However, with this game, you want to go back even farther, so were there any specific game mechanics that you might have wanted to implement that you ultimately couldn’t because it wouldn’t fit with this style? Rosa: This is a very interesting question because it points to some aspects in which we actually walked a little away from the style of the 50s. See, my first idea was to make a SHMUP game. And then I decided the style. It was almost at the same time, but still, the genre of the gameplay came first. Movies from the 50s had a different pacing, only in the 80s the video-clip editing style became a thing. I think it may explain why so many TV, movies, games, only go back to the 80s. We, however, tried to keep the style of the 50s as much as possible, but not always 100% faithful to it. The game is more frenetic than anything from that era. So, instead of cutting some mechanic that didn’t fit, we slightly changed the style. Like I mentioned before, it applies to the sound too. To be honest, although I think it worked as intended, I’m not sure if I would do this if I started the development of the game today instead of 2016. Maybe I would change the mechanics instead of the style, without compromising it, of course. But this was the direction we had since the beginning, and the direction I passed to the entire team as well. Source: Assemble Entertainment Shacknews: What are the primary differences between the four playable aircrafts? In what ways can they be upgraded? Rosa: The main differences are the size and “weight,” which is a thing you feel because of the speed and acce...

With the Terra Classic price up 80% from the lows today, many LUNC dip buyers missed the boat – what’s the best crypto to buy right now instead? Best Crypto to Buy Now One of the latest market insights posted to leading crypto news publication Cointelegraph reviews ‘innovative‘ new cryptocurrency project Tamadoge. OKX exchange is set to list the play to earn crypto game’s native token TAMA tomorrow in a listing that ‘could spark huge growth‘. The listing will take place first on OKX’s centralized exchange at 11:00 UTC, with the addition of a TAMA/USDT trading pair. According to CoinMarketCap, OKX is one of the 20 largest crypto exchanges in the world, regularly handling over $1.6 billion in daily trading volume. The exchange also boasts over 20 million registered users, ensuring Tamadoge will have a massive audience of potential investors. Many market commentators believe this could be the catalyst that Tamadoge needs to produce market-beating returns, with some regarding Tamadoge as one of the best cryptocurrencies to invest in. As Cointelegraph notes, OKX also has an attached decentralized exchange (DEX) which is accessible for traders in all countries. That will list Tamadoge the same day at 17:00 UTC. The official Tamadoge Twitter posted a tutorial guide on how to use the OKX wallet and Web3 DEX for its 70,000 followers. YouTuber Jacob Bury, whose channel reviews the best cryptos to buy daily, has also posted a beginners’ guide to OKX. The Tamadoge Telegram chat has now passed 56,000 members.  Over 25,000 investors took part in the Tamadoge token presale which lasted just 55 days before selling out despite the Bitcoin price crashing during its final phases. The incredible success of Tamadoge’s presale has provided a solid foundation for future growth. The presale raised a total of 19 million Tether (USDT) for the project, which is even more impressive considering the ongoing “crypto winter” and poor macroeconomic conditions. Lead game developer Thomas Seabrook has extensive experience in game design, having previously worked for leading entities, such as Voodoo, StarDigital, SketchJam and WMS. Terra Classic vs Tamadoge For those that missed the explosive Terra Classic LUNC price pump earlier today, the Tamadoge (TAMA) initial exchange offering could be one of the best cryptos to watch this week. Other than Terra Classic price volatility following new LUNC burn news from CZ Binance, crypto prices have been flat – but ‘all eyes will be on TAMA’s price in the coming weeks‘. Cointelegraph cites publications outside the crypto news industry such as Yahoo Finance and Business2Community which also speculate Tamadoge could be one of the best cryptos to invest in long term. CT notes that following Tamadoge’s IEO tomorrow, ‘2023 is likely to be a breakthrough year for the project‘ and it may be the next cryptocurrency to explode ‘in the coming weeks as demand continues to rise‘. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Sept 26 (Reuters) – Eight U.S. state regulators on Monday charged cryptocurrency lender Nexo Group for allegedly failing to register its Earn Interest Product, as authorities crackdown on digital asset platforms rocked by a crypto winter in recent months. Regulators from New York, California, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Washington and Vermont all filed administrative actions against the company, saying its accounts would qualify as securities and should be registered as such. “Nexo violated the law and investors’ trust by falsely claiming it is a licensed and registered platform,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said, adding she had sued the company and was seeking “disgorgement of any revenues derived from Nexo’s unlawful conduct”. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com In February, BlockFi had agreed to pay $100 million in a landmark settlement with the U.S. SEC and state authorities that said its interest-bearing product should have been registered as a security. Since then, digital asset platforms have been seeking more clarity on the rules governing such products, saying current regulations remain unclear. “Since the SEC guidance on earn products in February 2022, Nexo has voluntarily ceased the onboarding of new U.S. clients for our Earn Interest Product as well as stopped the product for new balances for existing clients,” the company said. Nexo’s interest accounts promise an annual interest rate as high as 36%, according to California’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. The company, however, said the 36% interest was only applicable for one asset, and it does not advertise the high rate. For the majority of assets on its platform, rates offered are in single-digit percentages, Nexo said. The regulatory clampdown comes amid a crypto winter that has seen prices plummet this year as a risk-off sentiment and fears of a looming recession crushed risky assets, forcing some companies into bankruptcy. Home Health Outsourcing Company InHome Therapy Increases Value Proposition Through Acquisitions, Technology – Home Health Care News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/home-health-outsourcing-company-inhome-therapy-increases-value-proposition-through-acquisitions-technology-home-health-care-news/ Since its arrival on the scene in 2021, InHome Therapy has tried to cement its spot as the go-to for home health providers when it comes to their therapy needs. In order to do this, the company has been focused on accelerating its growth through acquisitions. Over the last six months, InHome Therapy has hit the ground running. Ths company scaled in staff size and geographic reach with the acquisitions of Fort Myers, Florida-based Contract Therapy Services Inc., Austin, Texas-based Remedy Therapy, Dallas-based North Texas Home Therapy Professionals and Palm Beach, Florida-based Advanced Healthcare Services. As an organization, InHome Therapy is a King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based therapy outsourcing partner for home health agencies. Each of the acquisitions bring something unique to InHome Therapy’s business, its COO Meaghan Chitwood told Home Health Care News. “As an example, Contract Therapy Services had more speech therapists than your average company,” she said. “That allowed us to really bolster our speech, and also think about speech therapy differently, which was really helpful. Remedy allowed us to move into Texas, and the travel therapy part of their company was really interesting.” Dan Haggerty, InHome Therapy’s chief revenue officer, sees travel therapy as newfound potential area of growth. “The travel piece was something that was not initially on our radar, nor something that we were seeking out,” he told HHCN. “Now that we’ve gotten a handle on what that business looks like, and the total potential opportunity, we realized that travel will probably become a huge piece of our portfolio of services. In fact, we’re currently investing a significant amount of our budget into marketing for the travel services.” This aspect of the business also allows the company to form partnerships with agencies in markets where InHome Therapy doesn’t have a large presence. Haggerty noted that roughly 10% of InHome Therapy referrals two weeks ago came in from markets where the company doesn’t didn’t have a presence as recently as four or five months ago. “We really think about it as being a partner to the home health agency operators in running their therapy departments,” Matt Murphy, CEO of InHome Therapy, previously told HHCN. “The way our model works is that we handle every aspect of their therapy business.” Now that InHome Therapy has completed a big acquisition push, the company is focused on expanding its business in the markets it has entered. “We’re looking at ways that we can set ourselves apart from the people who are in our same space,” Chitwood said. InHome Therapy also raised growth capital from new investor TT Capital Partners and fromits original investor NewSpring. The company declined to disclose the amount it raised. The new funds will go toward a number of different areas, including technology development. “With technology development, we are looking at what are the things that we can do to be more accurate when it comes to what our agencies need,” Chitwood said. “What are the processes that need to be followed? How do we ensure that we’re hitting every single mark along the way?” Chitwood pointed to the example of a discharge versus a discharge OASIS, and the need to ensure that the company is getting these kinds of decision points right every time. InHome Therapy’s technology development is also focused on identifying all of the aspects of a therapist’s job that are non-clinical, and finding technology solutions that will streamline these areas. Looking ahead to the rest of the year, InHome Therapy has a number of goals it would like to accomplish. “We’re in a labor constrained market, where there will always be more business than therapists for the foreseeable future,” Haggerty said. “We have embarked on a campaign. We’re mobilizing multiple departments within the company to hire as many therapists as we can to bridge that gap. We’re calling it the 202 campaign, we will hire 200 clinicians between September and October.” The company is also looking to have a beta version of their technology ready before the end of the year. “Our leadership team believes that the company in our space that can figure out talent acquisition and technology will be able to provide the best solutions and be the best partner for home health agencies,” Haggerty said. At this very moment, countless teachers and librarians are having silly storytimes—and for good reason! With many readily available funny-to-hilarious books to choose from, these educators have their hands full when curating, reading, and using these books to create moments filled to the gills with giggles. PW spoke with five such educators how and why they do it. As a somewhat nervous child growing up, children’s librarian Brian Wilson (not the Beach Boys frontman) found comfort in anything humorous. “Humor and finding things that made me laugh put me at ease,” Wilson said. Today, as part of the early learning and literacy staff at the Evanston Public Library in Evanston, Ill., , a previous member of several national award committees, and the 2022 chair of the Children’s Literature Legacy Award, he offers ample opportunities for humor and laughter for his pre-K through first graders in his popular storytimes. “As you start reading a silly story, you begin hearing the kids laugh, and you see them looking at their classmates or kids they’ve just met, and they’re like, ‘Wow! We’re all having fun reading together!’ ” Wilson said, “There’s this positive experience and energy that happens.” This positivity lights up the room and gives Wilson the confidence to ham things up—and take the silliness to a whole new level. “For example, when reading Kitten’s First Full Moon (by Kevin Henkes), I might do this in the quietest, gentlest possible way or turn it into a rollicking, rowdy ride with the kitten chasing the moon and all the slapstick things that happen to the kitten,” Wilson said. Wilson says that silly stories can and often do go in different ways depending on his “read” of the mood of the room, and his own excitement level. He insists on using books that excite him. But it appears that it’s Wilson’s repertoire of storytelling skills that adds the secret sauce. “I’ll raise the rowdiness or slow things down if we need a laughter break,” Wilson said. “I want the story to make my students feel like they’ve been on a roller coaster, to engage and to hook them!” Wilson will also make stops along the way for teachable moments to talk about the story’s narrative and characters. And Wilson and his storytime friends are just getting started. “Together, we’re beginning a foundation for early literacy and a lifelong love of reading.” Beth Parmer, K-5 librarian at Maryland Elementary School in the Bexley City Schools in Columbus, Ohio, begins her school year with her K-first grade students taking part in fun and funny storytimes. “I always open the school year with silly stories for them because this might be their first exposure to the library—any library—and I don’t know how they feel about books just yet,” Parmer said. “I want them to think of our school library as a fun place to be, and to make it as joyful as I can.” According to her students, she’s accomplished all of the above and elevated library time to a revered status at her elementary school. “I have kids telling me that their favorite “special” is library,” Parmer said. “That’s really good because it’s hard to top gym class!” Palmer creates a worthy contender to P.E. by mixing music, movement, and interaction during storytimes whenever she can. “I look for stories that have songs to sing, or repetitive phrases so the kids repeat them,” Parmer said. “I like making the story as interactive as possible and acting them out; and my students do, too. If the characters in the story are digging for dinosaurs, I make sure they’re digging. If there’s moving and marching, we’re moving and marching!” With all of this silliness with a purpose, Parmer is hoping to dispel the myth that kids have to be quiet in the library. “Sometimes, there are kids who have this misunderstanding that the library has to be really quiet and serious. So, when I get to a really silly part in a story, I make sure that I’m cracking up so they feel that freedom to laugh as well.” During their library visits, Parmer gives her kids time to find books of their own to tickle their funny bones, and for some free choice activities (e.g. blocks, puzzles, or art) before sending them back to their classrooms until next time. When they return, Parmer may have yet another silly story waiting for her students—they can’t seem to get enough of them. But Parmer says they won’t ever be too zany or subversive, even though she especially loves those kinds of books. She’s mindful of her readers’ interests and needs. “I won’t ever choose a title that might make any kid uncomfortable,” Parmer said, “Because at the end of the day, the story times are for them—and the books have been chosen especially so they will laugh, enjoy books, and have fun!” Children’s librarian Basheer Kareem’s often standing-room-only morning storytimes at the Westover Branch of the Arlington Public Library in Arlington, Va., are filled with lots of fun and silliness. But, it’s silliness for a greater good. For the little ones he uses a combination of silly songs filled with rich language and opportunities for imaginative fun and games. His favorite go-to songs are often by the Laurie Berkner Band. “Their songs are funny, catchy, and, I love sharing them with young audiences because they just love them.” One particular song, “Let’s Go Swimming,” is a storytime favorite. The song is about a school of fish that try doing all kinds of things like riding bicycles and brushing their teeth, and then they say, “Wait a minute, fish don’t ride bikes!” (or whatever human activity they tried) and then say, “let’s go swimming!” From the Laurie Berkner Band to Desmond Dennis’s classic nursery rhyme remixes, Kareem carefully curates his song choices with the intent to introduce kids to silly and new vocabulary words, to get them moving, grooving, and acting out the songs. He also encourages them to use their imaginations and to have a good time. Then, he likes to switch gears. “That’s when I begin reading a heartfelt story to give my storytime friends something to think about—a message to take home and to put into practice,” Kareem said. “For example, we just read a very touching story called A Hundred Thousand Welcomes by Mary Lee Donovan [illustrated by Lian Cho]. It gives readers a glimpse into diverse households from various parts of the world.” With older kids (i.e. third through fifth grade) who drop by to unwind after the school day and, maybe, act a little silly, Kareem shares the latest humorous graphic novels and chapter books. “For this age, I gravitate towards silly stories because these stories have the power to draw kids in,” Kareem said, “and are great hooks for reluctant readers.” Once a reluctant reader himself, Kareem wished that someone had introduced silly books to him earlier in his reading journey. Today, he’ll only suggest books (e.g. The Treehouse series by Andy Griffith and Terry Denton, and the Timmy Failure series by Stephan Pastis) that have made him laugh out loud. “I want my readers to see their silliness in books—and that being silly can turn into careers… like writing silly books.” Laura Mossa’s career choice as an elementary school reading specialist at Grange Elementary School in the Baltimore County Schools.allows her the chance to support her “striving readers,” those still working on a variety of reading skills, and to serve all kinds of readers any way she can. One way is through silly storytimes and read-alouds. Whether she’s using them to teach reading behaviors and skills, or blogging about them with her dog, Bella, at Beagles and Books, Mossa gravitates toward picture book—the sillier, the better. On top of juggling her reading specialist caseload, Mossa instituted the popular #ClassroomBookADay initiative (created by Jilian Heise) in a second grade class back in 2017. As part of the initiative, Mossa reads a picture book to her second graders every day of the school year at the end of the day. At first, she chose different genres including nonfiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction. But, she soon discovered one necessary ingredient for their daily dose of picture books. “I found that humor’s really important,” Mossa said, “especially today—and in an elementary school, kids have to laugh. For these second graders, humor is the hook to get them into the stories!” While she was leading remote learning during Covid, humor became a lifeline for her students and herself. And, even now, she has one question for her students: “Who needs to laugh today?” Mossa said. The answer is always “We do!” and they share a silly picture book together. Afterwards, she said, “We discuss the author’s purpose, and how we might write our own silly stories as well.” Sometimes, things will turn serious. “At times, I will choose a silly book that has a serious tone, so we can peel back the onion. For example, Something’s Wrong! A Bear, a Hare, and Some Underwear by Jory John is about a bear that gets a pair of underwear from his grandma, and tries them on and forgets to take the underwear off.” Mossa said, “Throughout the book there’s a repetitive phrase: “Why is that bear wearing underwear?” But his best friend, a rabbit, not only tells him the truth, but also puts on a pair of underwear, and says that it’s a new style.” With four graders, she has used a silly nonfiction book, The Battle of the Butts: The Science Behind Animal Behinds by Jocelyn Rish. “At first, the kids were unsure about the book, and some were even embarrassed until they realized that the book was about how animals use their butts,” Mossa said. “Again, the humor was the hook—and we dove into more research about animals. Humor seems to be ?...

Does The Disney California Adventure Name Still Make Sense? – CinemaBlend https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/does-the-disney-california-adventure-name-still-make-sense-cinemablend/ Of the six North American Disney Theme Parks, Disney California Adventure is one of my favorites. It’s such an odd little place that it has a charm that many of the other parks don’t have. It’s not the park with the best rides, though it has some great ones. It also doesn’t have the history that a place like Disneyland has, but its own history is just as worthy of note.  However, as part of that history, Disney California Adventure has gone through more significant changes to its core identity than probably any other Disney park in its lifetime. Only perhaps Walt Disney World’s Epcot has seen as much change in its total lifetime, and Epcot has been around twice as long. California Adventure is still a great park, but does its name still make any sense? With the news that the final area of the original park, Pacific Wharf, is about to get rethemed, is it time to do something that hasn’t been done since Disney and MGM parted ways and rename a U.S. Disney park? (Image credit: Disneyland Resort) What Disney California Adventure Was Originally Designed To Be From its inception, Disney’s California Adventure had the most unique concept for a theme park, possibly ever. It was a theme park designed to bring all aspects of a California vacation together in one place… in California. You had to travel to California to go to a theme park to experience California. Ok, the idea maybe wasn’t quite that weird. Disney found that people traveling to California on vacation would frequently make Disneyland one stop on a larger vacation in the Golden State. So the idea was that if Disney could provide all the elements that vacationers were looking for, they could come to Disneyland Resort, stay there longer and still get everything they were looking for. So the initial layout for Disney’s California Adventure had areas inspired by the Napa wine country, Monterey’s waterfront, the Santa Monica Pier, the Northern California Redwood forests, National Parks like Yosemite, Hollywood and even central California farmland. It certainly succeeded in bringing the different parts of a diverse state to one place. Some of these areas had attractions in the Disney style, many of them just focused on food and beverage from the particular location being represented. However, the initial response to Disney’s California Adventure was not great. The park fell well below initial attendance estimates, and the changes to the park began almost immediately. (Image credit: Disneyland Resort) How Disney California Adventure Has Changed Over The Years One important thing to mention about the original California Adventure is that, like Epcot before it, the focus of the park was not on Disney characters or movies. Unlike Epcot’s earliest days, there was some IP at DCA. The It’s Tough To Be A Bug 3D movie based on A Bug’s Life was there, and Disney references and films could be found in the Art of Animation building, but that was about it. This all changed fairly quickly. Less than a year after California Adventure opened, the park’s least popular attraction, Superstar Limo, closed. It would eventually be replaced by Monsters Inc: Mike & Sully to the Rescue. Adjacent to the theater showing the Bug’s Life movie, a new land dedicated to A Bug’s Life was built, adding rides for younger guests, something the park desperately needed. In 2007, a major redesign of Disney California Adventure began that would cost more than the initial park construction. It added major areas to the park and completely redesigned others. Part of Cars Land were built over the area that once celebrated California farmland. A movie about the history of the state of California was replaced by The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. Various other attractions that remained would be rethemed to include Disney characters, such as the wild mouse roller coaster Mulholland Madness becoming Goofy’s Sky School. This redesigning and retheming has only continued. In 2018, the Paradise Pier area became Pixar Pier, including a re-theming of the park’s marquee attraction, California Screamin’ into the Incredicoaster. 2019, of course, gave us Avengers Campus, replacing Bug’s Land. Even more recently at the D23 Expo earlier this month, we learned that the Pacific Wharf area is set to get its own retheme into Big Hero 6’s San Fransokyo. Pacific Wharf was part of California Adventure on day one, and it’s essentially the last part of the original park that has remained mostly untouched. Many of the elements that made up the original park are still there, but their direct connection to the Golden State is largely gone. So does Disneyland Resort’s second gate need a new name? (Image credit: Disneyland Resort) Should Disney California Adventure Change Its Name? Yes, Sort Of… At this point, while the bones of the original Disney’s California Adventure are certainly still there, as somebody who visited on day one would still recognize the park, almost all of it has changed in some fashion, and nearly all of it has changed in a way that makes the park more Disney and less California. This is why I would argue that Disney California Adventure actually should change its name, but only slightly.  You see, there was another change back when all those other major renovations were taking place 15 years ago. It was originally called Disney’s California Adventure, but is now called Disney California Adventure. It was an odd choice because other Disney Parks, like Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, still use the possessive, and DCA should as well.  The name should be changed back to Disney’s California Adventure because there is still a distinctly California vibe going inside the park, but it’s Disney’s version of what a California-themed theme park would be. To whatever degree it ever was, California Adventure can no longer compete with what California actually is, but it can give you Disney’s take on what California would be like through a Disney lens. Pixar Pier still has similar amusements to what you’ll find at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk or Santa Monica Pier, but with Pixar characters and Disney’s Imagineers taking those midway games to the next level. You can still feel like you’re walking through a National Park as you walk through the park with Grizzly Peak on one side of you and the Grand Californian Hotel & Spa on the other. And Buena Vista Street doesn’t really look like Los Angeles did in the 1920s when Walt Disney arrived, but it looks the way you feel like it should in a Disney Park. When San Fransokyo opens in a couple years, it will still have elements of San Francisco, just in the way the city was there in Big Hero 6. It’s not the real San Francisco, certainly, but it also isn’t entirely divorced from reality either. California Adventure is now such a strange combination of places and characters that there’s probably no name that will capture what the park is better than the name that it already has, but that strangeness is part of the park’s charm. It is a Disney Adventure found in California, and that’s all it needs to be.  CinemaBlend’s resident theme park junkie and amateur Disney historian. Armchair Imagineer. Epcot Stan. Forest Service Seizes PG&E Equipment As Part Of Fire Probe – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/forest-service-seizes-pge-equipment-as-part-of-fire-probe-69news-wfmz-tv/ SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal investigators have taken possession of a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. utility transmission pole and attached equipment in a criminal probe into what started a Northern California fire that has become the largest in the state this year, the utility said in a regulatory filing Monday. U.S. Forest Service officials indicated to PG&E that an initial assessment showed the Mosquito Fire started near one of its power lines on National Forest lands, the Oakland-based utility said in its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Federal investigators removed the pole and equipment on Saturday, the utility said. The Mosquito Fire has scorched 120 square miles (310 square kilometers) and was 85% contained as of Monday. The blaze in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 110 miles (180 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco, broke out Sept. 6 and has destroyed at least 78 homes and other structures and charred forestland across Placer and El Dorado counties. Earlier this month, the fire surpassed the size of the previous largest conflagration in 2022 — the McKinney Fire — although this season has seen a fraction of last year’s wildfire activity so far. Fire officials said total containment of the Mosquito Fire is expected around Oct. 15. PG&E is cooperating with the U.S. Forest Service investigation, which has yet to determine what caused the blaze, the utility said in a statement Monday. The utility said it is conducting its own investigation into what sparked the blaze and that it doesn’t have access to the physical evidence that was collected by the Forest Service investigation over the weekend. “As the threat of extreme weather continues to impact our state and the West, we remain focused on preventing major wildfires and safely delivering energy to our customers and hometowns,” it said. PG&E equipment has been blamed for several of California’s deadliest wildfires in recent years, even as drought and heat waves tied to climate change have made wildfires fiercer and harder to fight. The utility pleaded guilty in 2019 to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter for a 2018 blaze ignited by its long-neglected electrical grid that nearly destroyed the town of Paradise and became the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century. PG&E filed for bankruptcy protection in 2019, after that blaze and others were blamed on its aging equipment. The utility emerged from bankruptcy in 2020 and negotiated a $13.5 billion settlement with some wildfire victims. But it still faces civil and criminal actions related to other fires. On Friday, a lawsuit claiming the Mosquito Fire was ignited by PG&E’s poorly maintained utility infrastructure was filed in San Francisco Superior Court. “The damage done to several counties by PG&E was entirely avoidable with their knowledge and expertise as electrical service providers,” attorney Gerald Singleton said in a statement. “PG&E continues to act negligently and has been responsible for more than 1,500 fires across the states leading to deaths, property destruction, financial burdens, and ruined lives because of their poorly maintained utility equipment,” Singleton said. The financial impact has not yet been reported but will likely be significant due to the number of acres that have been charred and recklessly ruined, forever changing the communities and lives of those affected, Singleton said.
