‘I’m Gonna Turn Some Heads’: Weight-Lifting Women Talk Gym, Health Culture – The State News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/im-gonna-turn-some-heads-weight-lifting-women-talk-gym-health-culture-the-state-news/ Efforts to make the gym a safer place for women  Studio art sophomore Amanda Roberts and kinesiology sophomore Charly May said they have seen more women in the gym moving away from cardio and beginning to pick up free weights, but it’s still far and few between. “Say I walk into PowerHouse gym at 5 p.m.,” May said. “I’m the only girl in there and I can literally feel everyone staring at me.” After study upon study, it’s no secret that social media is prone to exacerbating beauty standards and contributing to our feelings of self-consciousness. But with the rise of fitness influencers and content online, some believe the nature of this influence is changing, and not necessarily for the better. “I’ve been in the lifting community for a long time and I feel like the content that (influencers) put out isn’t really anything that benefits people,” May said. “It’s kind of just them glamorizing it and only showing the good parts of it.” Last year, members of the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, drafted a bill that sought to put funds towards a strictly female and non-binary gym space on campus.  At the time, education junior (then sophomore) Ella Woehlke said that while female health was so important, she always felt uncomfortable in a “male-dominated” space such as the gym. Her ideal gym vision included fewer mirrors on the walls and, instead, more encouraging quotes.  The bill was tabled.  Political science-prelaw freshman Alex Seidleck said at the time, that she has had several uncomfortable encounters that discourage her from working out in a gym. If she had a safer space, she would work out more often, she said. Promoting accessibility to physical health is the purpose of gyms, but they fall short when women want to get strong safely.  “I have no issue walking in there and acknowledging that I’m the only girl and that I’m gonna turn some heads,” May said. “But … as a beginner, I think that that can be extremely daunting to a lot of women.” May said a more informative, beginner-friendly environment might excite more women and allow them to feel more comfortable. So many people, she said, walk into the gym and don’t know where to start. Instead of feeling supported to start their journey, they quit before they can even begin. “Don’t get too big.” May is determined to compete in a bodybuilding competition someday.  She lifts weights five days a week and regularly tracks her macronutrients. Above all else, the lifestyle associated with weight lifting is something that makes her feel her best, both mentally and physically.  The beauty standard, she said, is shifting away from the stereotypical quest to be as thin as possible.  But while weightlifting becomes more of a trend, May said, what women actually want to look like becomes a gray area. Just because beauty standards are shifting doesn’t mean that things are perfect — not by a long shot. Support student media! Please consider donating to The State News and help fund the future of journalism. May describes herself as having a “bulkier” muscle build, something she faces difficulties for. “I’ve had a lot of girls reach out to me in the past and be like … ‘I don’t really want to look like you,’” May said. “I’ve heard that probably like 50 times in my life. There’s a huge stigma behind the fact that lifting will make you bulky.” Roberts said that more content online nowadays, particularly on TikTok, promotes being muscular. However, there is still a long way to go in the way of equal representation for women who lift. “I feel like for women, there aren’t a lot of super muscular, big influencers out there to show that it’s okay … to have nice, big muscles,” Roberts said. “It’s mostly just being thin and petite and not taking up a whole lot of space.” Despite online fitness content intending to be seen as “motivating”, studies show young people who regularly view health or fitness content online are more likely to have an eating disorder. One study forces readers to consider the format of Instagram — an image-dominant platform where users interact with content largely because of how visually pleasing it is. It is not a text-based platform; there is less emphasis on what the poster says and more on what the image shows us.  Therefore, it’s easy for “wellness” posts, not often based on scientific evidence or the advice of a professional, to win a nod of approval strictly based on what users see – which might be a toned stomach, a vibrant nutrition infographic or copious plates full of nothing but chicken and rice.  Finding Balance Roberts chooses to never look at the number on the scale.  She goes to the gym three to five times a week. She tracks her calories to make sure that she intakes enough protein but does not follow a strict diet. Her overall goal is to “be stronger,” something she said she measures by how she feels rather than her reflection in the mirror.  “#food” is the 25th most popular hashtag on Instagram, and “#fitness” clocks in at 30th. Photos of perceived “healthy” food, however, garner the most popularity when posted with this tag. Studies show that 42% of consumers use social media to gather advice about what they’re eating.  Instagram use is also shown to be associated with a greater tendency to exhibit orthorexic behaviors. The National Eating Disorder Association defines Orthorexia Nervosa as an “obsession with proper or ‘healthful’ eating.” Individuals who engage in orthorexic behaviors may compulsively check nutritional labels, cut out entire food groups in the name of wellness or show distress when their “safe” food options are unavailable. They also might obsessively follow the advice of ‘health’ blogs on social media. The more people post about this kind of lifestyle, May said, the more toxic it becomes. For herself, being healthy is about balance, and this can look very different for people. “There’s not one definition of (being healthy),” May said. “Personally for me, living a healthy lifestyle is me mentally being happy and satisfied with myself and physically feeling good. I don’t necessarily go by the number on the scale or if I’m eating clean however many days in a row … it’s about balance.”

Monday Sports Betting News And Notes: Sep 26, 2022 – Saturday Tradition https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/monday-sports-betting-news-and-notes-sep-26-2022-saturday-tradition/ We’re kicking off week 5 in the Big Ten, and here are your Monday sports betting news and notes. Week 5 Big Ten lines are out All eyes are on the big road matchup for Michigan as they play at Iowa this next weekend. Michigan opened as a 9-point favorite. The biggest spread goes to Rutgers who will travel to Ohio this weekend. Illinois at Wisconsin (-9) Northwestern at Penn State (-22) Michigan State at Maryland (-4) Purdue at Minnesota (-8) Rutgers at Ohio State (-39) Michigan (-9) at Iowa Indiana at Nebraska (-2) Monday Night Football The Cowboys and Giants square off tonight. DraftKings has the Giants listed as a 1-point favorite, while FanDuel is showing a 1.5-point spread. The Giants are one of the few remaining undefeated teams in the NFL. The undefeated season will be on the line against a Cowboys team that has handled the Giants pretty much every year for the last decade. The Cowboys, however, were prone to give up some yards on the ground so far this season, so we’ll see if Saquon Barkley can do his thing. Other sports news Rejoice! The NFL is finally rethinking the Pro Bowl. This game has been unwatchable for years (though still gets tons of eyeballs). The game is being replaced with a week-long skills competition and even a flag football game. Will it be good? Who knows, but it was time for the NFL to try something different. Georgia Tech is cleaning house. Head coach Geoff Collins has been led go after a 1-3 start in his fourth season. Georgia Tech has been terrible, so this doesn’t come as a surprise. Who will replace Collins? Names being floated include Georgia’s OC Todd Monken and App State’s coach Shawn Clark. Sports Betting Legalization All eyes remain on Ohio as sports betting remains on track to launch on Jan 1, 2023. We know when sports betting will be live, but we don’t know when the sportsbook operators will begin offering pre-registration promos to attract Ohio bettors to begin signing up. We’re keeping an eye on it. Maryland remains a state that continues to confound sports betting enthusiasts. Sports betting has been legal in Maryland for some time, but has yet to launch. This past week, the state decided to allow sportsbook approval on a rolling basis, which creates a much more flexible environment for getting sports betting up and running within the state. With recent news, it now appears that there is a chance it could launch in the state in late 2022.

Walmart Is Joining The Metaverse Targets Younger Audiences Kotaku Australia
Walmart Is Joining The Metaverse Targets Younger Audiences Kotaku Australia
Walmart Is Joining The Metaverse, Targets ‘Younger Audiences’ – Kotaku Australia https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/walmart-is-joining-the-metaverse-targets-younger-audiences-kotaku-australia/ It’s 2022, which means that at least one company is announcing some new thing that is connected to NFTs or the metaverse in an attempt to stay relevant in our rapidly collapsing capitalist hellscape. Today’s wheel spins landed on Walmart, Roblox, and “The Metaverse.” Retail giant and horrible company Walmart is launching two different virtual worlds in the uber-popular online game Roblox. According to CNBC, these virtual Walmart worlds will include things that totally don’t exist at any actual Walmart in the world, like a blimp that drops toys, music festivals featuring popular artists, and free-to-play mini-games and activities. Oh, and there’s a virtual store where people can buy virtual merchandise apparently called “Verch.” I’ve learned this word has been around for a bit and I’m both horrified by it and sad that I had to learn it even existed. These two new Roblox “experiences” are called “Walmart Land” and “Walmart’s Universe of Play.” Both launched in Roblox earlier today. William White, Walmart’s chief marketing officer, said that these new Roblox worlds are sort of a “testing ground” for the company as it considers investing in the metaverse (aka: a silly concept with no real definition beyond being a buzzword attached to hundreds of disconnected projects and ideas). White said the experiences were designed to appeal to the “next generation of shoppers,” specifically people age 25 or younger. Now, read with me these actual words and sentences that this human being said in regard to Roblox and Walmart: “How are we driving relevance in cultural conversation? How are we developing community and engagement? How are we moving the needle from a brand favorability [standpoint] with younger audiences?” White said. “That’s what we’re trying to accomplish here.“ If I ever start speaking this way, please push me off a cliff. You have my full permission. You’ll be doing me a favour. Honestly. Earlier this year Walmart filed for metaverse-related trademarks that seem to indicate the company has larger plans involving virtual currencies, digital goods, and even NFTs. White wouldn’t say how or if any of these trademarks will actually be used, but come on… Walmart won’t make any money directly from these new “immersive experiences” currently, but it could sell brands access to these experiences in the future. It also suggested these Roblox worlds could encourage people to make the leap from virtually visiting Walmart to actually shopping in-store or online. For example, in Walmart’s Universe of Play world, users can find and play various games that feature some of the best-selling toys this year — including Jurassic World and Paw Patrol characters. The idea is that kids play these games, get excited about these toys and brands and then bug their parents to buy this stuff at Walmart. A similar tactic can be found in the other Roblox world, which includes a large obstacle course featuring items from Walmart’s Gen-Z-focused beauty and make-up brands. There’s also a virtual dressing room featuring clothes and accessories from Free Assembly, its exclusive fashion line. Yes, for those who have been mostly avoiding all this nonsense, the metaverse is just a new way to try and sell more shit to people and young kids online. I mean, of course, it is. That’s why so many companies are looking to jump into the metaverse, even before it’s really been defined or created.

10 Coolest Justice Leaguers CBR Comic Book Resources
10 Coolest Justice Leaguers CBR Comic Book Resources
10 Coolest Justice Leaguers – CBR – Comic Book Resources https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/10-coolest-justice-leaguers-cbr-comic-book-resources/ The Justice League are the Earth’s greatest heroes. The team faces threats no other group could handle, and since its inception, heroes of all stripes and colors have called the team home. The types of League members range in power, genius, and coolness; however, they all add something to the team in their own way. Being cool is about more than saving the day. It’s a combination of factors; for example, having a great costume, an interesting attitude, great powers, and, of course, a good approach to heroism. The Justice League has given its members many opportunities to prove just how cool they are, whether it’s on the battlefield or beyond. 10 Batman Is The Most Goth Member Of The Team Batman has been a thorn in the League’s side almost as much as he’s been helpful. He sasses teammates and makes plans to kill them if they go bad, like in JLA: Tower Of Babel by writer Mark Waid and artist Howard Porter. However, it’s impossible to deny how cool Batman is. From his costume to his never say die attitude to the endless gadgets, Batman brings something to the League that no one else does. Batman is the overly theatrical Goth who’s a part of every friend group. He’s dramatic, dark, and can definitely make everyone miserable at times. However, he always comes through, doing it with a style and panache that’s unparalleled. 9 Superman Doesn’t Get Credit For How Cool He Is Superman is about truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, and he embodies these values without being dark or violent. He’s a hero of the highest order and cares for everyone, making anyone feel like the most important person in the universe. He’ll also help anyone with anything he can, as evidenced by Superman: Up In The Sky by writer Tom King and artist Andy Kubert. In this story, he traveled across the entire universe just to save one little girl. That’s what makes Superman so cool. There’s nothing he won’t do to save a life. No road is too far or a challenge too great. Superman is a classic hero, which can make him seem lame to some. However, there’s nothing wrong with fighting for truth, justice, and a better tomorrow. 8 Booster Gold Is The Class Clown Booster Gold often seems like he’s trying too hard sometimes. He doesn’t always know when to stop joking and uses his humor as a coping mechanism. He can get a bit annoying, but that’s how class clowns are sometimes. Thankfully, when the chips are down, Booster shines like the gold of his namesake. Booster might be comic relief, but he comes through when he needs to, having saved the universe multiple times completely on his own. As he stopped Mr. Mind from devouring the multiverse, he’s earned the right to be a bit flippant. He’s not always easy to be around, but the Justice League wouldn’t have it any other way. 7 Vixen Is A Supermodel And A Superhero Vixen’s first tenure with the League was during the Detroit years. She made a name for herself during this time, escaping the team’s bad reputation to become an important member of the superhero community. Working as a supermodel and using her fame to help the people of the African continent, she proved herself the rock star of the Justice League. She rejoined the team several times over the years and helped battle the fiercest enemies, including Solomon Grundy and the Legion of Doom. Vixen brought style to the team no one else had and proved how being a superhero was more than just fighting the big battles. She helps people in every way she can, and that’s the height of cool. 6 Black Canary’s Toughness Made Her Standout Among the best fighters on the planet, Black Canary holds a special place in the hearts of fans. She’s as tough as nails, and every villain who’s faced her, no matter how powerful, has learned not to underestimate her. Her canary cry is formidable, but most of the time she doesn’t need it. She’s a martial artist like no other, and that skill is what’s made her important to the Justice League. In her years with the team, she’s been on the front lines of every battle. She was finally given leadership of the team in Justice League of America (Vol. 2) #7by writer Brad Meltzer and artist Ed Benes, her hard work finally paying off. 5 John Stewart Stepped Into Big Shoes And Excelled John Stewart’s skill and courage made him a Green Lantern like few others. Taking over from Hal Jordan, he had a lot to live up to. Stepping into the League and replacing a founder wasn’t an easy road. He made his mistakes, like the destruction of Xanshi in Cosmic Odyssey, written by Jim Starlin and artist Mike Mignola. In fact, the end of the Green Lantern Corps saw him adrift for years, but its return showed him as the hero everyone knew he could be. Rejoining the League during the battles against Perpetua and the Legion of Doom, John Stewart proved why he was the perfect Green Lantern for the team. 4 Zatanna’s Attitude And Showmanship Makes Her As Cool As A Cucumber The Justice League is full of courageous heroes. However, Zatanna takes it to the next level. A perfect example of this was her most recent stint in the Justice League Dark. She was Wonder Woman’s second in command, helping her navigate the magic world, and she was integral in the defeat of the Upside-Down Man by absorbing his evil into herself. That’s why Zatanna is so cool. She’ll do whatever it takes to save the day, even if that means endangering herself. She also has an impeccable fashion sense and a theatricality born from being a stage magician. She’s taken over as the leader of the Justice League Dark, hitting the next level as a hero. 3 Green Arrow Does A Lot With A Little Green Arrow has a lot going for him as a superhero, but he’s always seemed like he shouldn’t fit in with the League. Green Arrow isn’t the most level-headed hero, but he’s always been incredibly tough. Somehow, Green Arrow has managed to hang with the greatest heroes on Earth using only a bow and arrow. Green Arrow’s courage and tenacity are what make him such a great Leaguer. He stays in every fight through sheer will and doesn’t back down. In Justice League (Vol. 4) #75by writer Josh Williamson and artist Rafa Sandoval, he forcibly inserted himself into the battle with Pariah’s dark army, ready to pay the ultimate price. That says everything about Green Arrow’s prominence in the League. 2 Kyle Rayner Joined The Team As The Cool Young Guy Kyle Rayner’s adventures took him all over the universe, which led to him joining the Justice League. He was the new kid on the block, trying to make his way with the greatest heroes in the universe. He was the anime kid who used his ring to create constructs unlike anything the team had seen before. Rayner could have easily been the blustery young hero, but he was able to back it up with talent. He hit his stride in JLA: Rock Of Ages by writer Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter. Thrown into a terrible alternate future where he’d been transformed into a Parademon, he persevered and showed why he deserved to be in the League, all without his ring. 1 Wally West Grew Into An Amazing Hero Wally West is widely considered the best Flash. The former Kid Flash came into his own when he became a member of the Justice League during the conflict with the Hyperclan in JLA: New World Order by writer Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter. As a result, he proved he was ready to shine on the biggest stage of them all. West managed to act as comic relief and also a formidable hero. He played both sides of the fence, which isn’t something easy to pull off. Even with a wife and kids, he’s still an amazing hero who proves having a family doesn’t hinder heroics. California, New York Join Several States Ordering Crypto Lender Nexo To Halt Yield Product – CoinDesk https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/california-new-york-join-several-states-ordering-crypto-lender-nexo-to-halt-yield-product-coindesk/ Jesse Hamilton is CoinDesk’s deputy managing editor for global policy and regulation. He doesn’t hold any crypto. California, New York and six other states are suing cryptocurrency lending platform Nexo for offering unregistered securities in the form of accounts that pay interest for cryptocurrency deposits, the states said in statements on Monday. New York’s action specifically accused Nexo of misrepresenting its registration status. “Nexo violated the law and investors’ trust by falsely claiming that it is a licensed and registered platform,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is demanding the company give up the revenue from its “Earn Interest Product” accounts and provide restitution to customers. “Nexo must stop its unlawful operations and take necessary action to protect its investors.” After the Securities and Exchange Commission made its view clear on interest-bearing accounts early this year, Switzerland-based Nexo said it had “voluntarily ceased the onboarding of new US clients for our Earn Interest Product as well as stopped the product for new balances for existing clients,” according to a statement sent to CoinDesk on Monday. “Nexo is committed to finding a clear path forward for the regulated provision of products and services in the US, ideally on a federal level.” The states – also including Washington, Maryland, Kentucky, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Vermont – filed individual actions targeting certain yield-producing accounts at Nexo. The lender advertises the accounts as “high-yield,” and California noted the company offered annual interest rates as high as 36%. “These crypto interest accounts are securities and are subject to investor protections under the law, including adequate disclosure of the risk involved,” said Clothilde Hewlett, commissioner of California’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. California claimed that as of July 31, more than 18,000 of its residents had $175 million in such accounts. Crypto firms BlockFi, Voyager Digital and Celsius Network Inc. have been subjected to similar regulatory actions. While BlockFi resolved state and federal actions with a $100 million settlement, lenders Voyager and Celsius have been immersed in bankruptcy, with Celsius shareholders filing last week to secure a share of the firm’s remaining assets. The Best Games To Play In The Background – Polygon https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-best-games-to-play-in-the-background-polygon/ Do you listen to podcasts, binge tv, or watch video game streams while playing video games? You are certainly not alone: Research shows that we spend hours of our day consuming media from multiple sources at the same time. It’s certainly easier now than it’s ever been! We can play our Switch while watching TV or add a second monitor to our PC setup. Everyone these days has a smartphone that can watch live streams or play games (or even both at the same time). We also have more content than ever before: Podcasts, live streams, YouTubers and TikTok influencers publishing everyday. More and more streaming platforms are filling their libraries with binge-able series that are perfect for semi-paying attention to. These more ubiquitous “second screens” and more content to engage with are certainly culprits for the increase in media multitasking, but what about the games themselves? Is there something about the games of today that makes us less likely to fully pay attention to them? That’s the question I tried to answer in my video about video game multitasking. I sought out the games people played while doing something else, interviewing my coworkers, trawling forum polls, and even starting a discourse on Twitter. I found people who never multitask while gaming and others who can’t game without having something else to watch at the same time. I also discovered some intriguing trends among multitaskers and categorized the most popular multitasking games that came up in my research. Be sure to check out the video for some of my own personal recommendations! If you enjoy this video and you’re looking for some more content to play in the background while you game, be sure to check out (and subscribe to) our YouTube channel!

Over time, the industry has gotten bigger and ships more sophisticated, new types of cruising have created new categories and broken down old barriers, prompting host Rebecca Tobin, Zelinski and Mike Estill, the COO of the Western Association of Travel Agencies, to debate how the categories have blurred – and whether they are still relevant — and how this impacts the way travel advisors assist their clients with making the right vacation choice. Letter To The Editor: Port Needs To Focus On Rail Rather Than Roads – Seattle Daily Journal Of Commerce https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/letter-to-the-editor-port-needs-to-focus-on-rail-rather-than-roads-seattle-daily-journal-of-commerce/ September 26, 2022 In the September 21, 2022, DJC there is an article regarding the Port of Seattle’s effort to “lessen congestion” at the airport by increasing the roadway, “Ramp removal at the airport making way for more lanes.” The project is the first of a two-part $79.3 million job that will widen the roadway into Sea-Tac in an effort to lessen congestion. The answer to airport congestion is evident: to lessen congestion don’t make the pick-up and drop-off roadways free. Nothing else works, its basic engineering economics. This $80 million project will not lessen congestion, Will the Port of Seattle hold responsible the Responsible Engineer to the boldly stated claim of less congestion? Will the Responsible Engineer place their stamp on a document stating the engineering requirement is measurably less congestion at the airport? Why not? Is it because no PE in their right mind would make that foolish claim given insurmountable evidence to the contrary? When the Port of Seattle stops feeling the need to coddle the car-dependent, congestion will be solved. Not before. Six-lanes, 16-lanes, 26-lanes, there is no paving the way out of congestion. More free pavement, more driving, more congestion. Since drivers don’t pay for that pavement they feel no responsibility to conserve it or minimize their usage. As a teenager I drove my plumb crazy purple 1970 Dodge Challenger up and down the airport’s round parking garages time after time and got out the parking gate before being required to pay the parking fee that kicked in after some number of minutes. We didn’t pay a cent for the use of those wildly fun round-about roadways, if the port had charged even a quarter we would have opted to play a video game instead. Want to lesson congestion at Sea-Tac? Charge drivers money. Enact a toll on the roadway in and adjust the toll amount to the congestion desired. That’s it. We recently paid $20 to park in the hinterlands of Puyallup, wonder what a $20 drop off/pick up toll would do to the congestion “problem” at Sea-Tac? The answer is less congestion. Sea-Tac could easily spend a fraction of that $80 million to substantially improve the experience of Sea-Tac travelers and airport employees and enable accommodation for any foreseeable future passenger predictions. The Port of Seattle’s number one focus needs to be improving the Sound Transit light rail experience at the Sea-Tac airport light rail station to make it first class, so light rail becomes well-known as the quickest, surest, and easiest way for travelers to make their flights and get home without hassle. Simple. Safe. Convenient. Improvements such as airline boarding pass doubles as transit pass, reconfiguring the walkway to provide conditioned space to transit riders between the train and the departure/arrival gates, moving walkways, as well as space for coffee shops, retail, and other vendors where travelers can take a break before hitting the security lines. Rather than port officials squandering money that can never be recovered, make an investment in spaces for vendors that have the potential to generate future small business income, employment, and good will for the Port of Seattle. Better traveler experience, fewer missed flights, a real first-class and world-class airport. — By Jon Mathison, P.E. Weight Loss: Crave Sugar And Calorie-Loaded Foods But Want To Be Fit? Daily Habits To Transition Toward A Heal – Times Now https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/weight-loss-crave-sugar-and-calorie-loaded-foods-but-want-to-be-fit-daily-habits-to-transition-toward-a-heal-times-now/ Added sugar is the root of most weight problems. (Photo: Pixanay) Have you been trying to lose weight but find your old diet and lifestyle habits too ingrained to be discarded? If you find that old habits die hard, you are not alone. Altering one’s diet habits to promote health doesn’t have to involve major adjustments, says Pranay Jain, Founder & CEO, BodyFirst. Modifying your diet in subtle ways over time might have a significant effect, Pranay Jain warns. Sudden drastic changes are neither healthy nor wise, and they will backfire in the long run and that is certainly not what you desire. Pranay Jain holds the authority to dispense advice on how to get fit and stay fit. Born into a business family and excelling in academics as well as athletics, he was proud of his sporting prowess and fitness in his student days. But when he was in his engineering degree programme, burning the midnight oil in preparation for exams became the norm and so did dipping into sugar-loaded yummy goodies – mindlessly and in a robotic manner. The once famed sportsman fell into a vicious loop of sugar craving and consumption. Needless to add, the athlete now looked rounded enough to challenge a Sumo wrestler. Body shamed and with his confidence at rock bottom, it was sports and the passion for fitness that pulled Pranay out of the trenches, reports Forbes India. He took up Mixed Martial Arts in 2012-2013 and once again physical fitness and a healthy diet took prime place in his life. But this time he had decided to eliminate the drug-like substance called sugar altogether from his diet. Pranay’s transformation from flab to abs came just as he also emerged as a qualified and meritorious Chemical Engineer, all set to get into his MBA. Pranay Jain, CEO — Bodyfirst That is why we find listening to him on issues of fitness and diet is worth every moment we spend on it. Armed with a personal journey of transformation and skills gained during his MBA, Pranay founded a wellness brand, BodyFirst® with the credo of spreading true wellness and health. Do you want to be fit? Gear up for modifications! “Even if you’ve followed the same diet for years, you may make modifications. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle also includes eating properly. In addition, eating well can boost your health and quality of life,” says Pranay Jain. To permanently improve your eating habits, you must first reflect on all your individual eating behaviours as well as your typical triggers for unhealthy eating, then replace those with healthier ones, and then reinforce your new, healthier eating habits, Jain says. Here’s his advice on how to transform your eating style slowly but surely. Simple ideas to begin eating better Cut back on sugar-infused beverages: Sweetened drinks can be calorie-dense. Sodas and packaged juices are high in sugar. They cause diabetes, obesity, liver damage, early ageing, and anxiety. Instead of those, try unsweetened or infused water. Slip in some extra greens: Substitute unhealthy meals with fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains. They’re full of protein, fibre, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, unlike processed foods. Consider a plant-based diet: A whole foods plant-based diet is one of the most fundamental cornerstones of a balanced and thriving living. This diet is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats, plant-based protein, and unprocessed carbs, making it ideal at any age. Go nuts for nuts: Superfoods pack protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Chia, flaxseed, and pumpkin seeds are also nutritious. They contain vitamins, antioxidants, calcium, zinc, and magnesium. You can even use them in baking or as a candy bar substitute. Eat-Stop-Eat: Intermittent fasting is a popular fitness and health fad. It is used to improve lifestyle, health, and . Various research has shown the cognitive and bodily benefits of intermittent fasting. Some research shows that it can increase lifespan too. It alternates eating and fasting. Intermittent Fasting doesn’t stipulate which things to eat, only when. This plan recommends a healthy, whole-food diet. Count nutrients, not calories: Focus on nutrients, not calories, to optimize your diet. We can only get energy from food. Quality, not the number of calories, affects health the most. Always have fresh, nutritious options on hand: When you’re hungry, you’ll eat whatever you see first. Keep healthful food visible and accessible at home and work. Keep healthful foods at eye level. Store quick healthy nibbles like nuts and seeds in a jar at work. The Bottom Line: Developing a healthy routine doesn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul. If the changes are little, you may be more able to adjust to them. Don’t try to change everything at once; instead, focus on just one area and make steady progress there. You could be pleasantly surprised by the impact that even minor adjustments can have. Begin your transition towards these simple dietary changes right away to make 2022 your healthiest year ever! How Fortnite Is The Antidote To Metaverse Skepticism IGN
How Fortnite Is The Antidote To Metaverse Skepticism IGN
How Fortnite Is The Antidote To Metaverse Skepticism – IGN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-fortnite-is-the-antidote-to-metaverse-skepticism-ign/ Updated: Sep 26, 2022 6:15 pm Posted: Sep 26, 2022 5:44 pm Nobody knows what the metaverse is. The term, which has become one of the most popular fundraising idioms deployed in boardrooms across the country, is notoriously enigmatic. Can the metaverse be defined as a social space where gamers hang out? A multiverse partitioned into distinct plots of land, governed by ruthless capital laws? Yet another extension of the questionable NFT gambit? Ask a million game developers, and you’ll likely get a million different answers. You could make the argument that we’ve already been living in the metaverse for decades – after all, I spent much of my youth ambling outside of the Ironforge auction house in World of Warcraft. You could also make the argument that the metaverse is a far-off dream that can only be actualized by wistfully futuristic technology; all of us transporting to a digital utopia using the holodeck from Star Trek. Perhaps it is better, and more honest, to think of the metaverse as something studios are creating on the fly, rather than a concrete ideal we’re aspiring towards. In that sense, Fortnite should be considered the torchbearer for this strange new frontier. I am a career Fortnite skeptic. When the game’s Battle Royale mode burst onto the scene on September 26 2017, just two months after the core Save the World mode launched, I was happy to write off Epic’s latest gamble as a strained, desperate attempt to cash in on the rollicking PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds boom. Months later, when Fortnite had firmly left all of its competitors in the dust, I still considered the game to be a quirky, ephemeral fad; a flavor in the month, surely to be steamrolled by the influx of world-conquering Infinity Ward and Respawn interpretations of the genre sure to come. That did come to pass – Warzone and Apex Legends are both massive hits – and Epic countered those incursions by… adding a payload of inter-fiction skins to their video game. Surely, that wasn’t going to work. Fortnite was a glorified mod that got lucky; it parachuted in at the absolute prime of the white-hot Battle Royale revolution, and the ability to take control of, say, Thanos would surely not prevent it from plummeting back into obscurity. When Tim Sweeney started talking about Fortnite as less of a game and more of a decentralized social experience, I thought Epic had officially lost the plot. How on earth is anyone going to hang out in a video game where the primary way to interact with your fellow players is down the barrel of a gun? Fortnite is a game. But please ask that question again in 12 months. — Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) December 26, 2019 Years later, I am prepared to admit defeat on my anti-Fortnite biases. Epic has doubled and tripled down on the belief that their product can transcend all of the established limitations of a video game – crossing over into a self-styled metaverse – and I think it is officially undeniable that they’ve pulled it off. Alex Perry, at Mashable, has a good summary of the copious ways Fortnite has reached escape velocity with all of its eccentric gameplay experimentation. A round of battle royale still has winners or losers, yes, but in Fortnite you can also “explore the expansive map, and do quests to unlock more goofy skins and accessories,” he writes. “You can go ‘fishing.’ You can hop into a car with a working radio station and just joyride around the landscape, or do the same with a boat in any of the map’s huge lakes.” All of this, of course, is filtered through a frankly astonishing catalog of bespoke, pop-culture costumes that allow for some genuinely Ready Player One-esque wish fulfillment. Thanos, introduced in 2018, was just the tip of the iceberg. Now, anyone in the Fortnite expanse can transform into John Cena, Spider-Gwen, or the Demogorgon, to name just a few. The skins that officially won me over? The introduction of the Dragon Ball Z cast. I watched Goku blast a Kamehameha across the map – securing Victory Royale – and realized that this was the exact sort of video game fantasy I dreamed about as a 12 year-old. Fortnite keeps getting bigger and weirder, and that’s all I really want out of whatever the metaverse is supposed to be. I can say, with confidence, that the metaverse should be a vector for huge gusts of laughter. It should feel like anything is possible. There’s a pervasive negative aura whenever game studios start talking up the metaverse. We’ve already witnessed out-and-out revolts by Ubisoft fans and Square Enix fans when the bosses of those two companies started making overtures to a crypto-heavy, transreality future. It’s pretty easy to diagnose where that negativity comes from; the bulk of most metaverse pitches hinge on massive NFT integrations – despite the fact that nobody has proven with any certainty that gamers are interested in say, auctioning off a weapon skin that’s encoded on the blockchain. Some of the biggest proponents of the model, like Facebook, have proven to be untrustworthy actors in our private and public lives, and now we are expected to forget about their reputation and go live in their worlds? Buying and selling digital material under their watchful eye? You aren’t wrong for being suspicious. I am too. “There is a fear that the [crypto] influence will deplete good design tenets, creating an environment where video game experiences are increasingly tiered by financial thresholds, creating a negative experience for consumers,” I wrote, in a story about the metaverse for Vox earlier this year. “So far, publishers haven’t been able to assuage those anxieties.” I think that’s what makes Fortnite such an outlier, and why gamers seem to be so much more optimistic about its metaversal potential. Yes, obviously, Epic is a for-profit company, and the skins sold on Fortnite all come at a price. But those assets aren’t mucked up in any sinister, blockchain membership program, and therefore, we do not feel like we’re being sold a bag of goods. You do not purchase the Goku skin because you believe it will be a good investment someday when you flip them to a prospective buyer for a windfall of sweet, sweet Ethereum. No, you purchase the Goku skin to simply be Goku. That is the same priority across the nascent Fortnite metaverse; all of the decisions Epic makes with the game seems to tie back to a loose, vibrant, gamer-y joy. This is not a metaverse masquerading as a Ponzi scheme or a work-for-hire program; you come to Fortnite to have fun, and with the multitudinous ways Epic continues to expand upon what is possible in a multiplayer match – from Ariana Grande concerts to the Infinity Gauntlet – all of a sudden, the metaverse seems like something worth getting excited about. So do I have any better understanding of what the metaverse is supposed to be now that Fortnite has won me over? No, not really. At its core, Fortnite remains a battle royale game, and no off-beat mini-games or crossover events are going to change that anytime soon. But perhaps the vagueness can work to Epic’s benefit; maybe they’ll be the company that establishes the expectations players have for any publisher welcoming players to their own metaverses. I cannot adjudicate the finer scientific points of the concept, but I can say, with confidence, that the metaverse should be a vector for huge gusts of laughter. It should feel like anything is possible. It should allow us to snipe our friend dressed as Dr. Strange out of the air, while we ourselves are dressed as John Cena. If we’re all enjoying ourselves this much, maybe Epic is right. We’ll all someday be enmeshed in the metaverse, without ever realizing it. Luke Winkie is a freelance writer for IGN. In This Article

Why Crypto Prices Are Crashing And What Will Stop The Bleeding – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/why-crypto-prices-are-crashing-and-what-will-stop-the-bleeding-cryptonews/ The crypto market’s downward spiral has made investors despondent. But hope is not lost if certain key factors play out. Why is Crypto Crashing? The crypto market has proved that it’s strongly connected to the stock market. If equities fall, so do Bitcoin and the best altcoins. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index was down just over 5% last week and has started the new week in the red. Several macroeconomic factors have caused asset prices to fall. A looming recession, rising interest rates, high inflation and geopolitical instability have made investors jittery and prompted them to pull out of the market. High Inflation August’s inflation rate in the US was 8.3%. The last time inflation numbers were that high was forty years ago. The increase in prices such as gas, food and other basic necessities have left investors with less money in their pockets. To supplement the shortage, some investors have sold assets.  A Looming Recession A recession is the latest talk of the town. The US had officially entered a recession in the summer of 2022, and some analysts have an even gloomier outlook. According to certain economists, a global recession that’s poised to be worse than the Great Depression is on its way. With such fears looming, many investors anticipate a massive market crash. To avoid losses, investors have decided to exit before lower prices. Geopolitical Tensions The tension between Russia and Ukraine has made many citizens concerned about potential conflict spreading to their region. Food shortages have become more common and gas prices seem to be heading higher. Many investors are panic-stricken by the global turmoil and decided to stock up on the essentials. Having an abundance of bread and milk has become a priority over the latest hot stock. Rising Interest Rates To fight inflation, the US Federal Reserve has increased interest rates. That has affected investors and homeowners. Owning the dollar has become more attractive due to increased interest rates, so some investors have opted out of securities and into currencies. Homeowners are paying higher mortgages, even though their salary percentage increases are below inflation figures. To keep their homes, some investors have liquidated their securities. But not all is lost.  Crypto’s Saving Grace The altcoins are affected by Bitcoin’s price action. They follow the leader. Whether Bitcoin is making a new high or continuing its downtrend, it should, at the very least, have some upward price movement. After Bitcoin set its all-time high (ATH) in 2018, it went into a multi-year bear market. But before entering a crypto winter, Bitcoin crashed, then had a short-term rally to Fibonacci retracement level 0.702. When Bitcoin’s price bounced to that level and eventually found resistance, it was during that period that the altcoin market went on a bull run.                                                         Bitcoin’s Price Chart The good news is that Bitcoin hasn’t had a short-term rally to the 0.702 retracement level after crashing from its all-time high of $69,000. If it does the way it did in its previous bull run, Bitcoin should reach around $53,000 before finding resistance. That’s when the altcoins should surge.

Putin Grants Citizenship To Edward Snowden, Who Disclosed U.S. Surveillance – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/putin-grants-citizenship-to-edward-snowden-who-disclosed-u-s-surveillance-the-washington-post/ Russian President Vladimir Putin granted citizenship on Monday to Edward Snowden, the former security consultant who leaked information about top-secret U.S. surveillance programs and is still wanted by Washington on espionage charges. Snowden, 39, was one of 72 foreigners granted citizenship in a decree signed by Putin. Snowden, who considers himself a whistleblower, fled the United States to avoid prosecution and has been living in Russia, which granted him asylum in 2013. Snowden was granted permanent residency in 2020, and his lawyers said at the time that he was applying to obtain a Russian passport without renouncing his U.S. citizenship. Snowden’s lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, told the state-run news agency RIA Novosti on Monday that Snowden’s wife, Lindsay Mills, is also now applying for Russian citizenship. Mills joined Snowden in Moscow in 2014. They were married in 2017 and have a son together. Kucherena also said that Snowden would not be subject to the partial military mobilization that Putin decreed last week to help Russia’s flagging war in Ukraine as Snowden never served in the Russian army. Putin said only those with previous experienced would be called up in the partial mobilization though there have been widespread reports of summonses going to others, including men arrested at protests against mobilization. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on Snowden’s new passport, and instead referred questions to the prosecutors seeking his extradition. “Soc, since I believe there have been criminal charges brought against him, we would point you to the Department of Justice for any specifics on this,” Jean-Pierre said. Snowden’s revelations, published first in The Washington Post and the Guardian, were arguably the biggest security breach in U.S. history. The information he disclosed revealed top-secret NSA surveillance as part of a program known as PRISM and the extraction of a wide range of digital information. In 2017, Putin said in a documentary film made by U.S. director Oliver Stone that he did not consider Snowden “a traitor” for leaking government secrets. “As an ex-KGB agent, you must have hated what Snowden did with every fiber of your being,” Stone says in the clip. “Snowden is not a traitor,” Putin replied. “He did not betray the interests of his country. Nor did he transfer any information to any other country which would have been pernicious to his own country or to his own people. The only thing Snowden does, he does publicly.” In 2020, Snowden explained his decision to seek dual citizenship. “After years of separation from our parents, my wife and I have no desire to be separated from our son. That’s why, in this era of pandemics and closed borders, we’re applying for dual US-Russian citizenship,” Snowden wrote on Twitter at the time. “Lindsay and I will remain Americans, raising our son with all the values of the America we love — including the freedom to speak his mind. And I look forward to the day I can return to the States, so the whole family can be reunited,” Snowden added. War in Ukraine: What you need to know The latest: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “partial mobilization” of troops in an address to the nation on Sept. 21, framing the move as an attempt to defend Russian sovereignty against a West that seeks to use Ukraine as a tool to “divide and destroy Russia.” Follow our live updates here. The fight: A successful Ukrainian counteroffensive has forced a major Russian retreat in the northeastern Kharkiv region in recent days, as troops fled cities and villages they had occupied since the early days of the war and abandoned large amounts of military equipment. Annexation referendums: Staged referendums, which would be illegal under international law, are set to take place from Sept. 23 to 27 in the breakaway Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine, according to Russian news agencies. Another staged referendum will be held by the Moscow-appointed administration in Kherson starting Friday. Photos: Washington Post photographers have been on the ground from the beginning of the war — here’s some of their most powerful work. How you can help: Here are ways those in the U.S. can help support the Ukrainian people as well as what people around the world have been donating. Canada Ends All COVID-19 Requirements For Entry – Porthole Cruise And Travel https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/canada-ends-all-covid-19-requirements-for-entry-porthole-cruise-and-travel/ Good news for those heading out on leaf-peeping cruises in New England or a final tour around the Alaskan coast this fall. Canada has announced that starting October 1, 2022, all COVID-19 border requirements, including vaccination, mandatory use of ArriveCAN, and any testing and quarantine/isolation requirements will end for all travelers entering Canada whether by land, air or sea. The news is big for cruise lines in particular is the vast majority of cruises to Alaska or to New England call on a Canadian port. Princess Cruises released a statement in response to the news stating that all their Alaska cruises call on Canada and the decision to remove protocols is a great help to guests and the cruise line.  RELATED: PORT OF SAN DIEGO PREPARES FOR BIGGEST CRUISE SEASON SINCE 2010 “We applaud these decisions by Transport Canada to make visiting the country easier and more convenient for all guests sailing our popular Alaska and Canada/New England itineraries, and look forward to welcoming everyone on our incredible Alaska and Canadian cruises,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “Alaska and Canadian cruises are among the most desired vacation options in the world, and we look forward to welcoming everyone who’s waited the past three years for this market to fully open.” The decision by Canada to allow unvaccinated travelers to visit the country affects a lot more than travel. For instance, since the pandemic, professional basketball and hockey players who chose to remain unvaccinated haven’t been able to play in contests held in Canada. That all changes on October 1st.  Barbados Ends COVID-19 Protocols In a similar move, the Caribbean island of Barbados has decided to forgo all of their COVID-19 protocols for entry effective immediately. There will no longer be testing for vaccinated or unvaccinated travelers and masks are only mandatory in healthcare facilities and on public transportation.  Do you have a cruise planned for Canada or Barbados? Crawford County Forms Healthy Living Coalition – Crawfordcountynow.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crawford-county-forms-healthy-living-coalition-crawfordcountynow-com/ By Crawford County Now Staff September 26, 2022 11:16 am BUCYRUS—Crawford County has formed a Healthy Living Coalition, to coordinate the Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) project, funded by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s State Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) program. Crawford County Public Health is among 18 health districts selected by ODH for HEAL project work. “Crawford County is ready to collaborate and make our communities a healthier place to live, work, and play,” said Lisa Workman, President of The Community Foundation for Crawford County and Co-Chair of the Healthy Living Coalition. “We are going to begin with Bucyrus City and then expand to the other communities in the county.  We will aim for an inclusive, health in all policies approach to community projects.” Kate Siefert, Health Commissioner, further explains that this project will hopefully lead to larger projects. “This project allows us to assess the existing conditions in the community for access to parks, walkable sidewalks, bike paths, safe routes to schools, locations of bike racks, and even the types of foods provided by agencies at public events and community meetings.  We have a very diverse group involved in these assessments and our next steps will be to jointly decide what we want to do next.” For more information about the health of the Crawford County community, please visit the Crawford County Public Health website to view the 2022 Community Health Assessment at crawfordhealth.org.  If you would like to get involved with the Healthy Living Coalition, contact Crawford County Public Health at (419)562-5871.

Sooners In The NFL: Week 3 Sports Illustrated
Sooners In The NFL: Week 3 – Sports Illustrated https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/sooners-in-the-nfl-week-3-sports-illustrated/ Jalen Hurts continued his sensational start to the season to help the Eagles get a big divisional win and move to 3-0. Another NFL Sunday has come and gone with Week 3 now in the books just short of Monday night’s collision between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. As the teams who are true contenders start to separate themselves from the pack, former Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles hit the road to put their perfect record on the line against the divisional foe Washington Commanders. Once again, as he has in each week of this young season, Hurts continued to prove his naysayers wrong with another stat sheet-stuffing performance. The former Heisman Trophy runner-up completed 22-of-35 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, leading the way on a 24-8 Eagles rout of the Commanders. The NFL season is much longer than just three weeks, so there is obviously still a long way to go. But, if the season were to end today, Hurts might very well be named the league MVP. Jalen Hurts Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports So far this year, the former Sooner has thrown for 916 yards and run for additional 167 with seven total touchdowns. Per The Sporting News, Hurts is the only player in league history to throw for 900+ yards and run for another 150+ on the ground in his first three games of the season. That seems impressive. While there were certainly loads of questions on Hurts’ NFL future when he entered the league, and they were warranted, he has continued to answer them since being given the reigns as the Philadelphia starter. There is still a lot of meat on the bone left in the 2022 campaign, but the Eagles now sit 3-0 in large part thanks to Hurts’ play and look to have solidified themselves as the favorites in the NFC East and a legitimate contender in the postseason. Next up for Hurts and the Eagles will be another test at home against the surprise 2-1 Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday at noon CT. Walmart Enters The Metaverse With Two New Roblox Experiences – The Drum https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/walmart-enters-the-metaverse-with-two-new-roblox-experiences-the-drum/ By Webb Wright | Junior Reporter September 26, 2022 | 5 min read Listen to article 4 min The retail giant has launched two new experiences in Roblox aimed at attracting a younger audience and generating an early buzz around holiday toy-shopping. “Walmart Land” is one of two new Roblox-based experiences launched today by the retail brand. / Walmart Walmart has taken note of the growing number of young people hanging out in virtual worlds, and it wants in on the action. This morning, the international retail chain announced that it has launched two separate experiences in Roblox – the open-world, blockchain-based gaming platform that has become a major gateway for brands seeking to set up shop in the metaverse. The brand said in a statement that its new virtual experiences — dubbed ‘Walmart Land’ and ‘Walmart’s Universe of Play’ — will “offer unique interactive content and entertainment for customers,” while delivering “the best fashion, style, beauty and entertainment items directly to the global Roblox community of over 52 million daily users.” “We’re showing up in a big way – creating community, content, entertainment and games through the launch of Walmart Land and Walmart’s Universe of Play,” William White, chief marketing officer at Walmart US, said in a statement. “Roblox is one of the fastest growing and largest platforms in the metaverse, and we know our customers are spending loads of time there. So, we’re focusing on creating new and innovative experiences that excite them, something we’re already doing in the communities where they live, and now, the virtual worlds where they play.” ‘Walmart Land’ will feature games, a virtual merchandise (“verch”) store — where visitors can buy new items for their avatars — and even “a physics-defying Ferris wheel.” The experience is kicking off with three events in October, which Walmart says have been designed “with the next generation of customers in mind”: ‘Electric Island,’ a virtual music festival; ‘House of Style,’ a fashion-oriented experience; and ‘Electric Fest,’ which is described as “a motion-capture concert celebration.” The second activation, ‘Universe of Play,’ is a push to both capitalize on the huge popularity of gaming among younger audiences and to give the brand a headstart in the upcoming holiday toy-shopping rush. The experience will include five games inspired by pop culture phenomena popular among American kids like Jurassic World, Paw Patrol and Razor Scooters. A treasure hunt for virtual toys will also be on offer, and visitors can zoom around using digital hoverboards and other “e-mobility” tools. The news of Walmart’s entrance into Roblox follows a series of patent applications filed in late December by the retailer — which indicated at the time that it had designs to begin capitalizing on the burgeoning virtual marketplace. At least one of the patents, for “virtual merchandise,” is coming to fruition in the brand’s new “verch” store activation. Another patent hinted at plans to begin delving into the realm of cryptocurrency; as it stands, no mention of crypto has appeared in the brand’s communications about its new Roblox experiences. Margot Bingham Nadia Hilker Josh McDermitt & Paola Lazaro Interview: The Walking Dead Screen Rant
Margot Bingham Nadia Hilker Josh McDermitt & Paola Lazaro Interview: The Walking Dead Screen Rant
Margot Bingham, Nadia Hilker, Josh McDermitt & Paola Lazaro Interview: The Walking Dead – Screen Rant https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/margot-bingham-nadia-hilker-josh-mcdermitt-paola-lazaro-interview-the-walking-dead-screen-rant/ After twelve years and eleven seasons, The Walking Dead is finally coming to a close. The long-running AMC juggernaut has consistently been one of the network’s top performers, and the finale of the show will certainly mark the end of an era. Although a number of pre-existing and upcoming spinoffs will continue telling stories in The Walking Dead universe, this final season will be goodbye for a number of fan-favorite characters and locations. Told in three installments, The Walking Dead‘s final season has spent time setting up what is sure to be a spectacular finale. The second installment of the final season left off with a number of primary characters stuck in the Commonwealth, a large but strict (and corrupt) community. Margot Bingham’s Max Mercer published a newspaper calling the Commonwealth’s leader out for her lies, setting up a major conflict within the walls of the town. But she’s far from the only character in trouble in the Commonwealth, as Josh McDermitt’s Eugene, Paolo Lázaro’s Princess, and Nadia Hilker’s Magna are all in the location as well. With The Walking Dead‘s end looming, it’s fair to say that each one of these characters is in danger of dying before the end of the season. Screen Rant participated in a roundtable discussion with Josh McDermitt, Margot Bingham, Paola Lázaro, and Nadia Hilker in which the actors shed some light on what viewers may expect from this final stretch of episodes. The Walking Dead Stars On The Final Season Love has kind of changed [Eugene]. It’s almost a flaw in a way, because he just goes along with whatever his romantic interest says. I was wondering, as someone who used to create all these gadgets, Dr. Smarty Pants and all that, how the character has changed so much. He’s always following, rather than being followed, romantically. Josh McDermitt: Yeah, it’s an interesting thing to play. His pragmatism, as you said, was really in the forefront, in the front of his brain, and now he’s got these blinders on. I think it’s really what made him fall for the decoy Stephanie. He wanted that to happen, and to be real, and so that allowed him to overlook some of the other things that, if he had just remained pragmatic, he might have caught. It’s interesting now that he’s with Max. She’s in a sense bringing him back down to Earth, to where he can actually just see everything for what it is. And I think that’s kind of where we find these characters. They’re confronted with a lot of things that are going on in the Commonwealth, and they’re just asking themselves, “What are we going to do about this?” I don’t know if Eugene without Max would be there right now, just because he might’ve just gone back to burying his head and becoming who he used to be years ago. So, it’s an interesting turn for the character to have him find love, and to have that love kind of blind him in a sense, and now having to be brought back to Earth. Some of you have been with the show for a long time, and some of you are relatively new. Once upon a time, as fans, we used to wonder, “Who were these characters before they arrived on the actual show?” And now, we have this great vehicle with Tales of the Walking Dead to go back and tell stories that may have taken place at any point in a character’s past. Have you considered what a story on a show like Tales of the Walking Dead would be like, and would you be interested in going back and revisiting a moment from your character’s past? Nadia Hilker: If there’s one wish that could come true, it’s that I would have loved to see her [Magna’s] backstory, where she came from. Her and Yumiko. Yeah. A hundred percent. Margot Bingham: I have always loved episodes where it’s really focused on the character. There’s nothing more that I love in a TV program [than] to show a character, and where they originated from, and where they came from. It connects you so much more. I think that would be awesome, for every one of us to be able to see our origin story and see how we came to this point. See all the people that we lost. It only connects fans more, and I think that that’s just one of the coolest journeys to see on a TV show. Paola Lázaro: I agree with everything that Margot said, and Nadia. I think it would be really exciting to see where all these people came from and what their lives were. I think it’d be awesome to see everything before the apocalypse. Josh McDermitt: I think it would be awesome if we did a sitcom-style episode. Paola Lázaro: A multi-cam, yeah. Josh McDermitt: Yeah, with Max and Eugene, where it’s like the show Roseanne or something. Where they’re just living in this house, sitting around at the kitchen table… Nadia Hilker: Fighting… Josh McDermitt: They’ve been married for, like, thirty-five years, you know. Margot Bingham: Hornsby comes in, and the whole crowd is like *Whomp whomp*. Josh McDermitt: They kiss, and it’s like, “Ooooh!” Paola Lázaro: I come and visit, and the crowd’s like “Ha ha ha ha ha ha!” Josh McDermitt: Yeah, you’re like Kramer on Seinfeld. You just get instant laughs from walking through the door. This is why they don’t include us in any of the pitch meetings. Screen Rant: At the start of this last batch of episodes, all of your characters are inside the Commonwealth, and it seems they all have hope that they can make a change from inside. After everything everyone’s been through, how much does hope play into the journey of your characters in this last stretch? Margot Bingham: It’s everything that we have. The only thing that we can hold on to is hope. We’ve lost so many. There’s nothing known around the corner. Everything is a gamble, and hope is literally all that we have. We have each other, but we don’t know for how long. So that’s all that we’ve got. Josh McDermitt: It’s really what’s driving all of this. They could just ignore everything that’s happening within the walls, and just keep moving forward as usual, but eventually all that’s going to fall apart. The corruption is going to get so bad that more and more people die who shouldn’t die, and so the hope for a better place, the hope for what we know this place could be, is really at the crux of this. It’s the only way the community’s going to survive, and they know it, and that’s really why they’ve put their lives on the line. The stakes are higher than ever right now, and that hope is right there. I’m not expecting you to give away your characters’ fate, but generally speaking, was the cast less anxious going into season 11 about their character possibly dying? Because you had gotten so far and accomplished so much, did you want to see your characters go out in a blaze of glory, or were you just so attached to them? Nadia Hilker: I kind of did, because I always wanted to be a zombie. I would’ve loved to just have gotten in the makeup, and done the growl, you know? But in the last episode. If I could have made a wish in the very last episode: after making love to Yumiko, turn me into a zombie. Paola Lázaro: No, I was not less anxious. I was equally anxious. I was probably more anxious. There were 24 episodes, and there were 24 chances… so I was definitely anxious about that. But you know, it’s part of this job. Josh McDermitt: We’re all going to fight for our characters and kind of shape where we feel like they should go. In what direction. I definitely had strong feelings about how long Eugene survived, which I’ll withhold. But whether or not he’s ever going to get killed off, the only thing I ever cared about was being a part of those conversations. Because sometimes with the writers, they’re living with these decisions for months before it’s ever even brought to you. And they’ve made decisions based on decisions based on conversations and more decisions, so by the time it’s brought to you, you may not have as much as a voice as you thought you did. And so, for me, I would just hope that no matter what, I was brought in from the get-go to kind of help shape where I felt like the character should and could end up. But I guess we’ll see. To steal Paola’s line, we have eight more chances to see if Eugene makes it or not. What has each of your characters taught you about yourself? Margot Bingham: That I can survive next to Josh McDermitt. That I’m strong enough to do a lot more than I give myself credit for. Nadia Hilker: That ASL is the most beautiful language in the world. Josh McDermitt: I think Eugene has taught me to be less selfish in my own life. I never felt like I was a very selfish person, but just to see how Eugene really puts others before him. Like, “Yeah, that’s kind of how we should all be living.” Paola Lázaro: I think the character taught me to be at peace with myself, and to kind of love myself, but also to use the pain of the past to move me forward and for survival. Use those skills that you learned in the past to deal with trauma and stuff like that to move you forward in this world. As a shield. I wanted to talk to Nadia about the scene in the first half where she’s a waitress working at Governor Milton’s ball, and you really see the division in between classes. In particular with Eleanor’s character. I almost got vibes of The Purge this season, and I was wondering what you all thought of the whole class influence, the whole modern take, especially with the protest signs in the first few episodes. Nadia Hilker: I hated it. I hated it, and when I read the script I was convinced that she would find a way to get out of there and convince everyone around her. But then, because of the differences in the class, even how they treated people, and then helping others, she felt responsible and wanted to help and make a change. That’s the pretty much the world we’re living in on this plan...

U.S. Gives Ukraine $457 Million In Civilian Security Aid – Axios https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-gives-ukraine-457-million-in-civilian-security-aid-axios/ The U.S. will give Ukraine $457 million in aid to help support its law enforcement and criminal justice agencies throughout Russia’s invasion of the country, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Monday. Why it matters: Part of the new assistance will go toward the Ukrainian government’s efforts to document, investigate and prosecute atrocities committed by Russian forces so far throughout the invasion. What they’re saying: “The United States stands side-by-side with the Ukrainian people and remains committed to supporting a democratic, independent, and sovereign Ukraine,” Blinken said in a statement. “Ukrainian law enforcement officers remain resilient, motivated, and determined to carry out their wide-ranging law enforcement missions and support for innocent civilians in towns and cities facing continuous Russian shelling,” he added. The big picture: A United Nations human rights commission said last week its initial investigation into the invasion has revealed evidence of war crimes, including executions, sexual and gender-based crimes and indiscriminate bombing of civilian targets, like residential buildings, schools and hospitals. The U.S. has committed more than $645 million in civil assistance to Ukraine since December 2021, according to the Department of State. Tech Standards Race Sets Up Proxy Battle Between U.S., Russia – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/analysis-u-n-tech-standards-race-sets-up-proxy-battle-between-u-s-russia-the-washington-post/ Happy Monday! Let me tell you, Elton John did not disappoint in his farewell to D.C. on Saturday. Send your favorite songs by the pinball wizard and news tips to: cristiano.lima@washpost.com. Below: Iranians struggle to get online amid major protests, and House Republicans plot their next move against Silicon Valley. First:  U.N. tech standards race sets up a proxy battle between U.S., Russia U.S. officials have voiced mounting concerns about ceding leadership to China and other rivals in setting global technical standards for emerging technologies like 5G and artificial intelligence, which could have sweeping implications on economic development and internet access.  This week, scores of U.S. diplomats, regulators and Biden administration officials are pushing to gain new ground, converging on the United Nations to rally behind their preferred candidate to lead a key digital standards unit.  Up for grabs is the top role of secretary general at the U.N.’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a 157-year old specialist agency that helps to oversee how radio waves are divvied up globally and how different technologies interconnect across borders.  The election formally pits Doreen Bogdan-Martin, an American ITU veteran backed by the White House, against Rashid Ismailov, a former Russian government official and Huawei executive. Current and former U.S. officials say what’s on the line is much bigger — it’s a battle between competing visions for the future of emerging technologies and the internet.  Tom Wheeler, former Democratic chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, last month called it “the most important election you never heard of,” featuring a choice between an “open internet, or a kind of state-controlled internet that resembles Russia’s and China’s.” The Biden administration seemingly shares that urgency, deploying a massive delegation to the ITU conference kicking off Monday that will decide the fate of the top role.  Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information April McClain-Delaney, one of the officials heading to the summit in Bucharest, Romania, told me that the contest between Bogdan-Martin and Ismailov “is a stark choice in terms of vision and openness.” China has increasingly sought to exert influence over global standards-setting bodies over the past decade, including the ITU, prompting U.S. concerns that the tactic will shape what technologies are adopted and further fracture the internet between the West and its rivals.  Sean Kelly, a spokesperson for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), called it “critical that someone like Doreen Bogdan-Martin represent the U.S” and that “we encourage trusted companies to participate and lead in these international standards bodies.” Kelly added that it would “thwart any efforts by adversaries like Russia and China to control our technological future.” Current and former U.S. officials have expressed concern that China and Russia are pushing to broaden the scope of the ITU’s work to include more sweeping internet governance and to shift away from its decentralized decision-making process. “Some of these more autocratic nations want to go in and have more of a top-down approach and have more control over the type of internet and the standards,” McClain-Delaney said. She added, “I think the other big issue is mission creep. … We don’t want it to go into internet regulation, or a broader regulatory regime, because digital taxation — those issues are really handled in other forums.” Top U.S. officials are arguing that Bogdan-Smith would be a win both for greater inclusivity in decision-making at the agency, which has nearly 200 member states, and for more emphasis on digital equality as a result.  McClain-Delaney argued that under Ismailov, “the vision, the priorities of the ITU would definitely be much less inclusive.” Geoffrey Starks, a Democrat who sits on the Federal Communications Commission, said in an interview that Bodgan-Smith aims to deliver “an inclusive digital future where everyone’s connected, everyone has access to the opportunities that the internet brings.” Democratic FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in a statement highlighted Bogdan-Smith’s “proven track record of driving greater broadband and modern communications in all countries.”  During a news conference last week, Ismailov pushed back on the notion that under him the ITU would take on a greater role in issues like content regulation.  “I don’t think the ITU will be able to control or regulate that,” he said, according to an official translation. And he suggested efforts to expand internet regulation reflect member interest. “Those organizations who don’t want to have any regulation, they’re saying that the ITU tries to take over the regulation and the management of the internet,” he said. “That is not so. The representatives of the countries want to have an international legal framework on the regulation of the internet and to agree on it.” Ismailov also disputed suggestions that what he’s pushing for will fragment the internet. “We would like the internet to remain a unified platform, a single space,” he said.  Natalia Abbakumova from Moscow contributed to this report. Iranians are grappling with widespread internet blackouts Amid intensifying national protests and widespread internet outrages, Iranians are turning to virtual private networks and other tactics to get online, Bloomberg News’s Patrick Sykes, Thomas Seal, and Arsalan Shahla report.  “On Friday, mobile networks suffered a ‘full shutdown,’ according to Cloudflare, a content delivery network business,” the report said. “That follows nationwide blackouts from 3:30 p.m. until about 10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a blog post from the company. Iran’s internet use is heavily mobile-based, with some 85% of site requests coming from mobile devices, the blog added.” Blocks in Iran against many virtual private networks and major platforms like Google, however, are hampering efforts to connect to the internet. In response, the U.S. Treasury Department on Friday issued guidance expanding internet services in Iran despite sanctions against the country, as Reuters reported. House Republicans set sights on Silicon Valley in midterm agenda House Republicans unveiled a midterm agenda Friday that took direct aim at the tech giants over allegations they are biased against conservatives and pose risks to children. The “Commitment to America” includes as a central plank a pledge to “confront big tech and demand fairness,” and criticized tech companies for “crystalizing an ideological echo chamber” and creating addictive apps that pose “potentially devastating consequences” for children. While sparse on specific policy proposals, the agenda calls for boosting data privacy and security protections and giving parents “more tools to keep their kids safe online,” offering a potential preview of the legislation GOP leaders will pursue if they retake Congress. Amazon, AT&T could foot some of the biggest bills under new minimum tax A handful of large companies, including e-commerce behemoth Amazon and telecom giant AT&T, could bear most of the financial burden from the 15 percent corporate minimum tax signed into law last month, the Wall Street Journal’s Richard Rubin and Theo Francis report. According to a new estimate out of the University of North Carolina, the report said, “Berkshire Hathaway would have paid the most in 2021, at $8.3 billion — or about a quarter of the estimated total — followed by Amazon at $2.8 billion and Ford Motor Co. at $1.9 billion. Add the next three companies, and that reflects more than half the $31.8 billion total: AT&T Inc. at $1.5 billion, eBay Inc. at $1.3 billion, and Moderna Inc. at $1.2 billion. “Amazon declined to comment on the figure but said it awaits federal guidance. Amazon said its taxes reflect a combination of investment and compensation decisions and U.S. laws.” (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.) “An AT&T spokesman said the company doesn’t expect the minimum tax to affect its 2023 tax bill.” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Sameera Fazili, the deputy director of the White House’s National Economic Council, speak at an event hosted by the the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution on the technology and service sectors Wednesday. The Morning Dispatch: Iran’s Protests Grow – The Dispatch https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-morning-dispatch-irans-protests-grow-the-dispatch/ Happy Monday! Even the saltiest and crankiest of Cubs fans have to admit Albert Pujols hitting his 700th home run was a pretty cool moment. Congratulations to the 42-year-old Cardinals slugger on becoming only the fourth player in major league history to reach that milestone. In an election with unusually low turnout, voters in Italy have given power to a right-wing coalition led by Giorgia Meloni of the nationalist Brothers of Italy party. Meloni and her coalition partners are strong skeptics of European governance and fierce critics of what they see as accommodationist policies towards migrants and refugees.  Tropical Storm Ian is strengthening in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba and could become a hurricane as early as today. President Joe Biden declared a preemptive federal state of emergency for multiple Florida counties—and Gov. Ron DeSantis declared one statewide—as Ian is expected to reach Florida later this week. Fiona, meanwhile, made landfall in Atlantic Canada on Saturday as a post-tropical cyclone, downing trees, washing away or damaging dozens of houses, and knocking out power for hundreds of thousands of residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.6 percent on Friday and hit its lowest level of 2022 as central bank efforts to combat inflation raise global recession concerns. U.S. equity futures are down further this morning. A report released Thursday by the Labor Department’s inspector general’s office estimated that up to $45.6 billion in pandemic-era unemployment insurance funds were stolen between March 2020 and April 2022. According to the report, most of the fraudulently obtained funds went to people filing for benefits in multiple states, filing on behalf of a deceased person, or filing on behalf of someone in prison. Pima County Superior Court Judge Kellie Johnson ruled Friday that Arizona can enforce a near-total abortion ban—with exceptions for the life of the mother—that had been on the books since the 19th century, before Arizona was a state.  Allies of former President Donald Trump have stood up a new super PAC—dubbed MAGA Inc.—that will reportedly spend money boosting Trump’s endorsed candidates ahead of November’s elections. People close to the former president say the PAC could eventually be used to back a 2024 run for the White House. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Friday she will extend proxy voting in the House through November 10, 2022, allowing representatives to vote remotely until two days after the midterm elections. President Joe Biden on Friday declared a major disaster in Alaska to provide federal funds for recovery from typhoon Merbok, which hit the state last weekend with 50-foot seas, sweeping away homes and triggering flooding and landslides. The disaster funds will cover temporary housing, home repair, and other costs. Protesters in the streets of Tehran last week. (Photo by AFP via Getty Images.) What started as a smattering of local protests has grown into a nationwide movement of Iranians, led by women, frustrated with their oppressive regime. Since we updated you last Tuesday, the protests—sparked by the death in custody of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, detained for allegedly violating Iran’s dress code—have spread to dozens of cities. As many as 80, by some counts.  Even in traditionally conservative cities, women are removing their legally required head coverings and cutting their hair in defiance. Protesters have reportedly seized at least partial control of the small Kurdish town of Oshnavieh, and many have a bigger goal: the downfall of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his son. The protests are the largest since 2019, when security forces killed about 1,500 people who took to the streets over fuel prices. Five members of Basij—a volunteer militia group affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps—have reportedly been killed during the demonstrations, suggesting the Iranian people are increasingly willing to resist security forces trying to dispel protests. “We’ve seen videos of protesters attacking police cars, chasing after police officers, throwing different kinds of incendiary devices at the police,” Jason Brodsky, policy director of United Against Nuclear Iran, told The Dispatch. “That really is an unprecedented development, the level of ferocity in terms of a pushback against Iranian security forces.”  “Now, that doesn’t mean that we should underestimate the willingness and capability of the domestic security apparatus to crack down hard on the Iranian people. They will do that, and it’s going to get bloody, and the regime is very practiced at this.” The regime’s crackdown has already begun. The true fatality numbers are likely higher than what’s being publicly reported, but Iranian state TV has suggested at least 41 demonstrators and police have died so far, while Amnesty International reports at least 30 deaths—including four children. State media also reported at least 1,200 people have been detained. It takes a lot of muscle to quell riots this big, as evidenced by the reported paramilitary members’ deaths: Iranian officials have apparently reinforced the police response with other security forces, a typical escalatory step in the regime’s well-worn playbook on suppressing unrest. Iranians loyal to the regime have also staged counterprotests criticizing the revitalized anti-government movement, with state television airing clips ostensibly showing thousands of people marching in the streets in support of the Supreme Leader. Internet blackouts have also continued apace, as Iranian officials attempt to prevent protesters from coordinating. Cellular networks are reportedly disrupted, and access to Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Skype appears to have been cut off. In an effort to aid the demonstrators, the U.S. Treasury Department on Friday issued a general license allowing tech and telecommunications companies to circumvent sanctions on Iran to “offer the Iranian people more options of secure, outside platforms and services.” Elon Musk has reportedly activated Starlink—the satellite internet operated by SpaceX—in Iran, but the service requires ground-based terminals that will be difficult to operate within a hostile country intent on stifling dissent. The Biden administration has also lent rhetorical support to the protesters, in addition to slapping additional sanctions on Iranian security officials and the morality police accused of killing Amini. “We stand with the brave citizens and brave women of Iran who right now are demonstrating to secure their basic rights,” President Joe Biden declared at the United Nations General Assembly. Critics have argued that White House criticism of the Iranian regime rings hollow because of its eager pursuit of a nuclear deal that would deliver sanctions relief and cash to the oppressive regime. Masih Alinejad, who has agitated against the regime for years and amplified the calls for the protests leading to the current unrest, tweeted at national security adviser Jake Sullivan, urging the White House to stop sending mixed messages. The “idea of conducting nuclear talks while offering ‘thoughts and prayers’ for the murder of #MahsaAmini is shameful. On the streets of #Tehran , everyone chants against the clerics. The Regime is crumbling. Don’t save the dictators by signing a nuclear deal.”   But the Biden administration, borrowing a strategy employed throughout the Obama administration, insists that it can decouple its negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program from regime behavior more broadly.  “That will not stop us in any way from pushing back and speaking out on Iran’s brutal repression of its citizens and its women,” he told CBS News yesterday. “We can and will do both.” Europe has been slower to respond to the protests—though protesters clashed with police outside the Iranian embassies in France and England over the weekend—but the European Union has hinted at the possibility of sanctions over the violent crackdown. According to Iranian state media, the regime’s foreign ministry summoned its ambassadors in Norway and the United Kingdom over the weekend, due to the “interventionist stance” of Norways’ parliamentary speaker and “hostile character” of London’s Persian language media. The protests are going to continue, as is the repression: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Saturday that the country must “deal decisively with those who oppose the country’s security and tranquility.” Other Iranian officials have made similar veiled threats, but Raisi—“elected” to his role last year—is known as a particular barbarian, and will likely exceed his predecessors’ brutality in stifling the unrest. “As prosecutor of Hamedan, he led his province in the torture and execution of thousands of political prisoners in the 1980s,” Charlotte reported last June. “Between July and December 1988, the state carried out the systematic killings of dissidents, activists, militants, mothers, and children imprisoned across Iran. Hussein-Ali Montazeri, deputy supreme leader-turned-dissident, named Raisi as one of the four officials intimately involved.” The world may soon see what that looks like in the 21st century. “This week there’s going to be more violence, not less,” predicted Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “Many are expecting the regime to try to act on what Raisi said.” “This kind of conflagration is what the regime has always been worried about,” Taleblu continued, “which is a spark that leads to a larger rebellion or potentially even revolution.” Meet Kurt Steiner, professional stone skipping legend who in 2013 skipped a stone 88 times. “Steiner stared across the creek and raised his right arm into an L, ...
