Gaye Oakley Calhoun – The Oxford Eagle https://digitalalabamanews.com/gaye-oakley-calhoun-the-oxford-eagle/ Gaye Oakley Calhoun Published 2:55 pm Friday, September 23, 2022 Gaye Oakley Calhoun, 85, died Wednesday, September 22, 2022, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 25, 2022, 12:30 P.M. at Oxford Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Gossett officiating. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Calhoun was born on November 3, 1936, to the late George and Virginia Oakley. She first sat in front of the keys of an organ at the age of 13, realizing both the gift and the passion she had for music. From this moment, Mrs. Calhoun dedicated her life to music. Teaching at both Bramlett Elementary School for 15 years and leading the Gateway music program at Lafayette Elementary School for 8 years, she shared this passion for music with her students and found great joy in seeing the same spark lit within them that she experienced as a young girl. From playing the accordion, to teaching private piano lessons, to playing wedding receptions and special Christmas gathering on the Oxford Square, many can say that special moments in their lives were marked by the sound of Mrs. Calhoun playing in the background. She would donate her time to play for the residents of Memory Makers and other retirement communities, knowing how a simple melody could brightens someone day as the driver for the School Bus #28, she was beloved by the students in her care, who all looked forward to the last day of school, when Mrs. Calhoun would allow them to celebrate with a paper ball fight. She believed firmly in nurturing the creative and playful sides of her students, and allowing plenty of time for fun. Always staying busy, Mrs. Calhoun took on the role of official notetaker for the Athletic Department for The University of Mississippi. After her retirement, she kept her mind sharp by enrolling in classes at Northwest Community College, furthering her studies in art and any other subject that piqued her interest. For 56 years, Mrs. Calhoun was married to her best friend and true companion, Billy, and they never tired of one another’s company. They looked forward to family vacations each year spent on the beach, at theme parks, or in the mountains to see the fall leaves. Once their children were grown, they continued these travels together and cherished every day spent with each other. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Calhoun was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Lampkin “Billy” Calhoun. Mrs. Calhoun is survived by her daughter, Camille Calhoun Steiner and her husband, Keith of Tuscaloosa, AL; sons, William L. “Bill” Calhoun, Jr. and his wife, Paula of Mooreville, MS and David Oakley Calhoun and his wife, Rachel of Oxford, MS; as well as four grandchildren, Emily Addison, Andrew Megginson, Mallory Steiner, and William Calhoun; and three great-grandchildren, Tannor Megginson, Carter Megginson, and Milly Addison. Expressions of sympathy or memorial contributions in Mrs. Calhoun’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 431 North 16 th Street, Oxford, MS 38655. Read More…

Pinellas Deputy Killed In Hit And Run Suspect Taken Into Custody After Manhunt
Pinellas Deputy Killed In Hit And Run Suspect Taken Into Custody After Manhunt
Pinellas Deputy Killed In Hit And Run, Suspect Taken Into Custody After Manhunt https://digitalalabamanews.com/pinellas-deputy-killed-in-hit-and-run-suspect-taken-into-custody-after-manhunt/ ST. PETERSBURG — A Pinellas deputy was hit and killed by one of the construction workers he had been assigned to protect during a Thursday night shift, setting off a nine-hour manhunt that ended Friday with the suspect’s capture, Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said. The crash happened near Roosevelt Boulevard after Deputy Michael Hartwick, 51, started his shift at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Gualtieri said at a news conference Friday morning. Hartwick was working a traffic detail to provide safety for road construction crews who were working on Interstate 275 overnight, Gualtieri said. Hartwick blocked the two inside southbound lanes of the interstate, got out of his patrol cruiser and was standing on the shoulder facing north when Juan Ariel Molina-Salles, 32, a construction worker who was operating a front-end loader, struck him, Gualtieri said. Gualtieri initially provided a different name for Molina-Salles, but at a second news conference Friday afternoon, he said investigators were given false information from workers at the scene. Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Michael Hartwick, 51, was hit and killed overnight Thursday by a construction worker driving a front loader, according to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. [ The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office ] The forklift was moving about 20 mph when it hit Hartwick, killing him instantly, Gualtieri said. Molina-Salles continued for about a mile after hitting the deputy, then stopped in a parking lot and told another construction worker that he had killed a deputy, according to the sheriff. That worker took Molina-Salles’ construction gear and hid it in a wooded area. Molina-Salles took off running, Gualtieri said. Law enforcement across the area spent Friday morning searching for Molina-Salles, using three helicopters and K9 units —including bloodhound dogs from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office that used Molina-Salles’ gear to pick up his scent and take him into custody by about 8:40 a.m. Friday. He was expected to be booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Friday on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a first-degree felony that carries a maximum prison sentence of 30 years. Molina-Salles is from Honduras and is an undocumented immigrant who told investigators he has been in the Tampa Bay area since March, Gualtieri said. His last known address is in Tampa. The worker who helped Molina-Salles hide his gear also initially gave deputies a fake name, Gualtieri said, but investigators eventually confirmed he is Elieser Aureilio Gomez-Zelaya, 31. Gomez-Zelaya also is from Honduras and is an undocumented immigrant, Gualtieri said. He will be charged with being an accessory after the fact, a felony. Gualtieri said other workers at the scene also provided false names. “They were hindering the investigation, not giving us answers to the questions that we needed,” Gualtieri said. Explore all your options Juan Ariel Molinas-Salles, 32, was arrested on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022 on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death after deputies say he fatally struck Pinellas sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hartwick with a front end loader at a construction site on Interstate 275 near Roosevelt Boulevard the prior night and then ran away. [ Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office ] The sheriff said Molina-Salles does not have a driver’s license and gave his employer a fake identification card from North Carolina. He said he told his employer that he knew how to operate the front end loader from his construction experience back in Honduras, according to Gualtieri. Gualtieri said the men work for Archer Western Construction. The Tampa-based firm is among the contractors hired by the Florida Department of Transportation to replace the Howard Frankland Bridge. A representative of the company and a spokesperson for the state transportation department did not immediately respond to messages Friday afternoon. Authorities initially closed I-275 in both directions, diverting southbound traffic onto Ulmerton Road and northbound traffic onto Gandy Boulevard. The northbound lanes were reopened by 10 a.m. and the southbound lanes by about 12:15 p.m. The scene off SR-688 E at Interstate 275 on Friday morning where a manhunt converged for the construction worker accused of fatally striking Pinellas sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hartwick with a front end loader on I-275 Thursday night. The suspect was in custody by 8:40 a.m. Friday. [ DOUGLAS R. CLIFFORD | Times ] “All I can say is, here we go again,” Gualtieri said at the first news conference Friday. “This is 18 months after Deputy Magli was killed. Now we go 110 years in the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office without any line of duty deaths, and now we have two in 18 months.” Deputy Michael J. Magli, 30, was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 17, 2021. The 30-year-old deputy, husband and father of two was killed attempting to stop a drunken driver fleeing from other deputies. Robert Allen Holzaepfel, 35, was sentenced this month to 35 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, DUI manslaughter and a felony charge of driving while his license was suspended or revoked. A Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputy searches an area off State Road 688 E at Interstate 275 for a construction worker accused of fatally striking Pinellas Deputy Michael Hartwick with a front-end loader Thursday night. The worker ran away after the crash and was in custody by 8:40 a.m. Friday, deputies said. [ DOUGLAS R. CLIFFORD | Times ] Hartwick was a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office for 19 years, Gualtieri said. “Mike was a good guy, a good cop,” Gualtieri said. “He did his job.” Hartwick has two adult sons who were notified of Hartwick’s death, as was his mother, Gualtieri said. The Sheriff’s Office will escort the deputy’s body from the medical examiner’s office to the Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs, starting at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Outside of work, Hartwick loved to ride his motorcycle and was the road captain for the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group, Skyway Chapter, 1982 in St. Petersburg. Hartwick was an excellent planner and liked introducing the group to new restaurants on their rides, said 61-year-old Ron Herman, a member of the club. “He used to always joke and say we were a riding group with an eating problem because he knew the places to go and eat,” Herman said. Hartwick liked to ride in Pasco and Hernando counties and enjoyed the camaraderie of the group, said Jim Masterson, who met Hartwick through the club about two years ago. “He was very inviting and inclusive, very open,” said Masterson, 57, adding that Hartwick had a great sense of humor. “He was very interested in how everyone was doing and what was happening in our lives, and he was good about sharing what was going on with his,” Masterson said. “And he was just a good friend.” This is a developing story. Live Updates: Robinson, Budd And Hines To Join Trump For Rally In Wilmington https://digitalalabamanews.com/live-updates-robinson-budd-and-hines-to-join-trump-for-rally-in-wilmington/ Flags blow in a stiff wind prior to a GOP rally featuring former president Donald Trump, at Wilmington International Airport Friday, Sept. 23, 2022. Travis Long tlong@newsobserver.com WILMINGTON Former President Donald Trump returns to North Carolina on Friday to hold a rally in support of Republican candidates he has endorsed in two crucial races on the ballot this fall. Trump will speak at the Aero Center in Wilmington, following remarks by U.S. Senate candidate Ted Budd as well as Bo Hines, who is running in North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District. Other speakers will include Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, U.S. Rep. David Rouzer and Michael Whatley, the chairman of the N.C. Republican Party. The rally comes about six weeks from Election Day, and Budd and Hines remain locked in competitive races against their opponents, Democrats Cheri Beasley and Wiley Nickel. Both races could play a critical role in determining which party emerges from the midterms with control of Congress. Follow this story for live updates from the rally. Crowds continue to gather before program starts Update 3:45 p.m.: With the first speakers of Friday’s rally about to take to the stage, supporters of the former president continue to assemble at the Aero Center. Bleachers behind and surrounding the stage are beginning to fill. In between popular songs by Elvis Presley and other artists, political ads about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Senate candidate Ted Budd played on giant screens flanking the stage. Outside the entrance, vendors were selling a variety of Trump-branded merchandise, including flags, signs, shirts and hats. People walk past a cardboard cut-out of former president Donald Trump prior to a rally in Wilmington, N.C. on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022. Kaitlin McKeown kmckeown@newsobserver.com Democrats blast Budd and Hines for appearing with Trump Update 3:20 p.m.: Ahead of the rally, North Carolina Democrats blasted U.S. Senate candidate Ted Budd and House candidate Bo Hines for their ties to Trump, particularly in light of the former president’s false insistence that he won the 2020 election. At a press conference at Wilmington’s 1898 Memorial Park, Charles Graham, a Democratic member of the N.C. House of Representatives who is running for Congress from North Carolina’s 7th district, said Trump and other speakers would “spew lies and try to deny democracy.” “We must stand up against authoritarianism, a cult-like movement in this country that will undermine democracy,” Graham said. “Today, as I speak, we’re regaining our credibility in the world, our standing in the world. Folks, we can’t go backwards. We can’t take steps backwards, and let this MAGA movement take us backwards.” Charles Graham, a Democratic state representative running for Congress from North Carolina’s 7th district, speaks during a press conference on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022 in Wilmington. Luciana Perez Uribe Guinassi lperezu@newsobserver.com National Democrats also weighed in. Monica Robinson, a spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which raises money to elect Democrats to the House, said Hines had “pledged to be a MAGA warrior in Congress.” “When Bo Hines steps on that stage with Donald Trump tonight, he’ll be reminding North Carolina voters that he takes his marching orders from the most extreme wing of his party – not from North Carolinians,” Robinson said in a statement. Federal Judge Says Court Can't Block House January 6 Subpoena For GOP State Chair
Federal Judge Says Court Can't Block House January 6 Subpoena For GOP State Chair
Federal Judge Says Court Can't Block House January 6 Subpoena For GOP State Chair https://digitalalabamanews.com/federal-judge-says-court-cant-block-house-january-6-subpoena-for-gop-state-chair/ By Katelyn Polantz and Tierney Sneed, CNN (CNN) — A federal judge in Arizona has decided the court can’t block a House January 6 committee subpoena for GOP state chair Kelli Ward and her husband Michael’s cell phone data, a ruling that may deliver more information in the probe about the state-level backing for Donald Trump after his 2020 loss. Judge Diane Humetewa found the court didn’t have power to curtail the House’s investigative steps in response to the Wards suing the committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. The Wards’ phone company received a subpoena in January seeking certain phone records from November 2020 through January 2021. The Wards’ lawsuit was one of several filed by people whose phone records were subpoenaed in the House probe, but it’s one of the first among them with such a conclusive ruling. The phone companies have largely allowed their customers whose records were subpoenaed to block the House from accessing them simply by filing a lawsuit, which many allies of Trump have done. The Wards claimed in their lawsuit against the House committee that the demand for the phone records violated their constitutional rights, as they asked a federal court in Arizona to quash the subpoena. In a Thursday ruling, Humetewa said she was barred by a legal concept known as sovereign immunity from taking legal action against the House lawmakers, as she found they were acting in their official government capacity in demanding the information. She also dismissed claims the Wards had brought against their phone company to prevent production of the records. The Arizona court cited the decision by the federal appeals court in DC that deemed the January 6 committee’s probe legitimate when the appeals court rejected a Trump bid to block the release of his White House records to congressional investigators. Humetewa was also not convinced that the subpoena for the phone records was overly broad. “The Select Committee’s information request relates to phone calls records from November 1, 2020, to January 31, 2021, from an account associated with a Republican nominee to serve as elector for former President Trump,” she wrote. “That three-month period is plainly relevant to its investigation into the causes of the January 6th attack.” The-CNN-Wire & © 2022 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Jurors Deliberating In QAnon Follower's Capitol Riot Trial
Jurors Deliberating In QAnon Follower's Capitol Riot Trial
Jurors Deliberating In QAnon Follower's Capitol Riot Trial https://digitalalabamanews.com/jurors-deliberating-in-qanon-followers-capitol-riot-trial/ WASHINGTON (AP) — An Iowa man was “weaponizing” rioters who joined him in chasing a police officer up a staircase during one of the most harrowing scenes from a mob’s attack on the U.S. Capitol, a prosecutor told jurors on Friday at the close of the man’s trial. Douglas Jensen had a folding knife in his pocket and was wearing a T-shirt expressing his adherence to the QAnon conspiracy theory when he joined the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. One of the videos that went viral after the siege captured Jensen at the front of the crowd that followed Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman up the stairs. “The defendant wasn’t just leading the mob. He was weaponizing it,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Hava Mirell said during closing arguments for Jensen’s trial. “He knew he had the numbers, and he was willing to use them.” Jurors began deliberating in the case against Jensen, a construction worker who is among hundreds of people charged with federal crimes for their conduct at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Jensen’s shirt — which depicted a large “Q” and a bald eagle along with two QAnon slogans — made him stand out from the crowd of rioters. Defense attorney Christopher Davis said the shirt was a symbol of Jensen’s adherence to QAnon, which centered on the baseless belief that former President Donald Trump was secretly fighting a Satan-worshipping cabal of “deep state” enemies, prominent Democrats and Hollywood elites. During Trump’s time in the White House, QAnon spread beyond the internet’s fringes to influence mainstream Republican circles. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta, File) Photo: ASSOCIATED PRESS/Manuel Balce Ceneta PreviousNext “The (COVID-19) pandemic did weird things to us. It did weird things to everyone,” Davis said. “Apparently, Mr. Jensen was one of them.” Jensen believed the conspiracy theory’s apocalyptic prophesy that “The Storm” was coming and would usher in mass arrests and executions of Trump’s foes, including Vice President Mike Pence. Before the riot, Trump and his allies spread the false narrative that Pence somehow could have overturned the results of the 2020 election. After scaling the outer walls of the Capitol, Jensen climbed through a broken window to enter the building. Prosecutors said Jensen learned from a friend’s text message that Pence was about to certify the election results. “That’s all about to change,” Jensen replied. Pence was presiding over the Senate on Jan. 6 as a joint session of Congress was convened to certify President Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral victory. Photographs showed Jensen with his arms extended as he confronted a line of police officers near the Senate chambers. “Go arrest the vice president,” Jensen told one of the officers, according to prosecutors. “This was a terribly confused man on Jan. 6,” Davis said of his client. The defense lawyer urged jurors to judge Jensen by his own actions and not by what others did at the Capitol. “Jan. 6 is not sitting at that table. Douglas Jensen is,” Davis said, pointing to his client. Jensen didn’t testify at his trial, which started Tuesday. Goodman was a key witness for prosecutors. Before running upstairs, Goodman approached Jensen and other rioters with his hand on his gun. Fearing for his life, Goodman retreated upstairs and found backup from other officers guarding an entrance to the Senate, where senators were being evacuated, according to prosecutors. “That was not a game of follow the leader. That was Officer Goodman in survival mode,” Mirell said. Jensen is charged with seven counts, including charges that he obstructed Congress from certifying the Electoral College vote, that he assaulted or interfered with police officers and that he engaged in disorderly conduct inside the Capitol while carrying his knife. He isn’t accused of brandishing the knife. “Doug Jensen would not be stopped on Jan. 6 until he got what he came for, and that was to stop the peaceful transfer of power,” Mirell said. Davis said Jensen didn’t forcibly assault Goodman or anybody else. “It’s all on video,” he said. “He never did it.” Mirell argued that Jensen didn’t have to physically touch Goodman to be found guilty of an assault charge. “Just a threat to use force,” she said. Jenson drove back home to Des Moines, Iowa, a day after the riot. The following day, he walked six miles to a police station and showed up unannounced, saying he was probably a wanted man. But there weren’t any warrants for his arrest when two FBI agents questioned him at the station. Jensen told the agents he considered himself a “digital soldier” who was “religiously” following QAnon. He said he worked his way to the front of the crowd because he “wanted Q to get the attention.” “I basically intended on being the poster boy, and it really worked out,” he said, according to a transcript of the interview on Jan. 8, 2021. At least 880 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related federal crimes. Approximately 400 of them have pleaded guilty. Juries have convicted eight Capitol riot defendants after trials. None of the defendants who had jury trials was acquitted of any charges. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Nick Saban Seems Happiest At This Moment Before Alabama Football Games
Nick Saban Seems Happiest At This Moment Before Alabama Football Games
Nick Saban Seems Happiest At This Moment Before Alabama Football Games https://digitalalabamanews.com/nick-saban-seems-happiest-at-this-moment-before-alabama-football-games/ It doesn’t get more intense than Nick Saban on a gameday. Before and after his team competes, you might see him a handful of times: A pregame interview with ESPN, the Walk of Champions, his post-game press conference. All the while, Saban remains focused on finishing the job, yet there’s a moment of lightheartedness from the hyper-serious coach you can spot mere minutes before the Tide kicks off. We’ve seen Saban cut loose plenty of times, not to suggest the man is incapable of experiencing joy. Alabama fans know better than anybody the coach is a pretty funny guy via his weekly radio show, his annual lake parties or hilarious mic’d up clips. It’s just when it’s time to put the pads on for games or improve at practice, he dials up the intensity. But throughout the years, we’ve amassed several pregame photos of Saban seemingly at his most easy-going mere moments before kickoff, when everything is at stake for his program. Focus on midfield where Saban appears genuinely glad to have a brief conversation with another head coach and usually shares a big smile with that day’s opponent. Saban seems his most relaxed during those conversations, even when it’s with a perceived rival or the coach of a “cupcake” team. You catch a glimpse of two head coaches sharing the experience leading their teams to compete after a week of preparation. Maybe he just likes talking ball with someone who does what he does, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Ahead of the Alabama-Ole Miss game in 2021, Lane Kiffin gave Paul Finebaum and the college football-watching world an explanation of what actually is said during those on-the-field, pre-game meet and greets between coaches. “They really are irrelevant,” Kiffin said of the pre-game chats with opposing coaches. “Both people are ready for the game. It’s really just some tradition that they have. “You go out there and he’ll say, ‘Welcome,’” he said of his talks with Saban. “Talk about the weather. How’s everything? (I’ll ask,) how’s Miss. Terry doing? That’s about it.” He continued: “I mean what do people really think we talk about out there? ‘Hey, we’re really gonna work on your safety with some double moves today.’ I mean there just isn’t a whole lot to say.” In the gallery above or the photos below, take a look at the images documenting the famously focused coach taking a moment to relax and enjoy what he and his contemporary do for a living. For starters, we’ve already seen this from Saban in 2022, with opposing coaches like Steve Sarkisian (his former assistant) of Texas, or Terry Bowden of Louisiana-Monroe. (AP Photo/Vasha Hunt)AP He may have a hundred cameras on him at all times on a gameday, but Saban manages to cut loose before kickoff, even with former assistant and Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher. The two notably exchanged opinions on how NIL impacts recruiting, with Fisher getting especially heated, but they each insist it’s water under the bridge. We’ll look for a similarly cordial encounter on Oct. 8, when the Aggies visit Bryant-Denny Stadium. As mentioned above, Kiffin insists coaches don’t discuss anything particularly important during the pregame meeting, but what makes Nick Saban crack up like this? Perhaps it’s just Kiffin, one of the funniest personalities in college football. (Vasha Hunt)AP What’s really on display is the level of respect Saban and his opposing coaches have for each other, and the resumé doesn’t matter. Coaches have a lot in common and can share stories for days, each knowing what the other experiences on a daily basis in building a program and leading a group of young men at critical periods in their lives. But you see the reverence Saban has for coaches like David Cutcliffe, Frank Beamer and Mark Richt. Or the joy he might feel competing against former assistants like Jim McElwain and Will Muschamp. Or the parallels he can draw with leaders of smaller programs like Mark Spier at Western Carolina (or Terry Bowden at Louisiana-Monroe, above). Arizona GOP Chair's Try To Quash Jan. 6 Panel Subpoena Fails | News Channel 3-12 https://digitalalabamanews.com/arizona-gop-chairs-try-to-quash-jan-6-panel-subpoena-fails-news-channel-3-12/ By BOB CHRISTIE Associated Press PHOENIX (AP) — A federal judge has rejected an effort by Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward and her husband to block a subpoena of their phone records issued by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The ruling from U.S. District Judge Diane Humetewa issued late Thursday said none of the reasons the Wards cited for blocking the congressional demand passed legal muster. She noted that Congress is generally immune from lawsuits, and none of the exemptions applied to the Wards’ case. Their attorneys appealed the decision to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday. Ward did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and a request for comment from the committee was also not immediately returned. The House committee is seeking phone records from just before the November 2020 election to Jan. 31, 2021. That would include a period where Ward was pushing for former President Donald Trump’s election defeat to be overturned and while Congress was set to certify the results. Kelli Ward and Michael Ward were presidential electors who would have voted for Trump in the Electoral College had he won Arizona. Both signed a document falsely claiming they were Arizona’s true electors, despite Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the state. The Wards argued the subpoena should be quashed because it violated their First Amendment rights, violated House rules and exceeded the authority of the Jan. 6 committee. Humetewa rejected each argument in turn, and noted that the federal appeals court in Washington has rejected similar arguments raised by Trump during his unsuccessful effort to block a committee subpoena. The U.S. Supreme Court let those rulings stand. Ward and her husband, who are both physicians, also argued that turning over their phone records could compromise the private health information of their patients. But Humetewa said the records are being sought from a phone provider not covered by health care privacy laws. She did encourage the Wards and congressional investigators to discuss how to protect any patient information that might be revealed. Kelli Ward is a staunch Trump ally who has aggressively promoted the false claim that the election was stolen from him. In the days after the election, she pressured Republicans on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to investigate unsupported claims of fraud before election results were certified, according to text messages released by the county. Quebec Votes: Legault Says Conservative Leader An 'agitator,' Compares Him To Trump https://digitalalabamanews.com/quebec-votes-legault-says-conservative-leader-an-agitator-compares-him-to-trump/ MONTREAL — Coalition Avenir Québec Leader François Legault went on the offensive Friday morning, comparing rival Éric Duhaime to former United States president Donald Trump and saying the Conservative leader’s stance on COVID-19 restrictions is disqu MONTREAL — Coalition Avenir Québec Leader François Legault went on the offensive Friday morning, comparing rival Éric Duhaime to former United States president Donald Trump and saying the Conservative leader’s stance on COVID-19 restrictions is disqualifying.  Legault said he understands that Quebecers were frustrated with the restrictive measures his government took to slow the spread of COVID-19, but he said party leaders need to be responsible. Duhaime is an “agitator” who is “profiting from the distress of certain people to win votes,” Legault told reporters in Laval, Que., before comparing the Conservative leader to the former president.  “He even reminds me of someone in the south (who) also denied the reality, denied the numbers,” Legault said, without directly mentioning Trump’s name. It was the second day in a row that Legault has described Duhaime’s position on COVID-19 measures as “disqualifying.” The incumbent premier made the same attack to reporters following a leaders debate Thursday evening. Duhaime responded to Legault Friday, telling reporters the CAQ leader is “panicking” after the debate. “He was obviously not happy with his performance and I can understand, indeed,” the Conservative leader said. “It was a … very difficult debate for Mr. Legault; it was very poorly handled. He did a very poor job of defending his government’s record, particularly on the mental health of children, and he is looking for a scapegoat.” Duhaime, whose party gained support with its opposition to COVID-19 restrictions, denied that he’s an agitator and said Quebecers deserve to hear ideas that differ from the premier’s. “I know he’s a man who tolerates very little criticism and different ideas; it’s been two years that he’s had a lot of power in his hands and clearly he doesn’t appreciate the democratic aspect of an election campaign, which is there to debate these issues,” Duhaime said. Duhaime said that while Quebec had the “most radical” COVID-19 restrictions in the country, the province is “far from having the best record” when it comes to the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 per 100,000 people. Had he been in power, the government would have protected the most vulnerable and allowed the rest of the public to follow advice from health officials, Duhaime said. Legault has said he believes excess mortality — the number of deaths over a certain period that exceed what would be expected compared with previous years — is a better measure of the pandemic’s impact than COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people. A 2021 report published by the Royal Society of Canada argued that Quebec came closer than any other province to capturing the true death toll of COVID-19, in part because it tested more people for the disease after death than any other province except Manitoba.  “I think Éric Duhaime is smart enough to see, like the rest of us, that the data on excess mortality is clear: there were fewer deaths in Quebec because we had more measures and he knows it,” Legault said Friday.  Elsewhere, Québec solidaire spokesman Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, who was a frequent target of Legault’s attacks during Thursday’s second and final leaders debate, accused the CAQ leader of lying about the left-wing party’s plan to fight climate change. Nadeau-Dubois said that despite Legault’s claims, his party wouldn’t force businesses to close. Instead, he said, the plan reflects an acknowledgment that certain industries — like oil refineries — will see shrinking demand in coming years. Legault’s claims are “unworthy of someone who wants to be premier,” Nadeau-Dubois said. Earlier on Friday, Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said he was pausing his campaign after developing flu-like symptoms. St-Pierre Plamondon said on Twitter he has tested negative for COVID-19 twice but would isolate as a precaution.  This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 23, 2022. Gulf Coast Loses Wild 48-45 Contest To No. 8 EMCC Picayune Item
Gulf Coast Loses Wild 48-45 Contest To No. 8 EMCC – Picayune Item https://digitalalabamanews.com/gulf-coast-loses-wild-48-45-contest-to-no-8-emcc-picayune-item/ Published 1:35 pm Friday, September 23, 2022 PERKINSTON —  Fans of offensive football loved what happened at A.L. May Memorial Stadium on Thursday night, but for Mississippi Gulf Coast there was the feeling of what might have been. The Bulldog saw a 24-point third-quarter lead evaporate in a 48-45 loss to No. 8 East Mississippi. “I’ve never been a part of a game like that,” Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright said. “If you’re a spectator, it’s a great game, but for us, it’s tough to be on the short end of that one.” The teams combined for 1,150 yards of offense split almost exactly down the middle, with the Lions (3-1) edging the Bulldogs (2-2) by 10 yards (580-570). The Bulldogs had a 200-yard receiver and two 100-yard rushers, and it turned out not to be enough. Keymari Odum (So., Haines City Fla./Ridge) had six catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns which covered 68 and 80 yards. Cam Thomas (So., Picayune/Picayune) broke the school record with a 99-yard touchdown run to open the scoring, finishing with 14 carries for 131 yards. Xavier Evans (So., Laurel/Laurel) ran for 109 yards and a touchdown. Thomas’ long touchdown run came with just 47 seconds left in the first quarter, remarkably late in the game to start putting points on the board in a game that finished with 93 total. The scamper broke the school record set by Rod Williams against Southwest Mississippi in 2013. Odum’s 68-yard catch came about two minutes later. “He’s had a big year so far yardage-wise, and he’s been in the end zone a lot,” Wright said. “He’s a dynamite player.” After an EMCC touchdown with 3:41 left in the half, Gulf Coast drove back down the field and scored on a 3-yard throw to Cyrus Hartfield (So., Hattiesburg/Hattiesburg). He also had a key 31-yard reception to set up the score with 11 seconds left. Ramone Bradley (Fr., Fairhope Ala./Fairhope) caught a 13-yard pass from Pat McQuaide (Fr., Solon Ohio/Solon) on the first drive of the second half. Dramarian McNulty had an interception on the next EMCC possession, returning it to the 10-yard line. That set up a 22-yard field goal by Gabe Showalter (Fr., St. Martin/St. Martin) with 7:56 left in the quarter to make it 31-7. McQuaide finished 19-for-34 for 337 yards and four touchdowns. That ties him for the third-most touchdowns in a game in school history. The Lions scored on their next three possessions to make it 31-26, but Gulf Coast responded with a seven-play, 63-yard drive capped by Evans’ 1-yard plunge to push the lead back to 12 with 9:12 to play. EMCC answered with a long drive, but Odum caught an 80-yard touchdown pass 22 seconds later to make it 45-33. The Lions, however, would score twice in the final four minutes to go ahead with 61 seconds left. Gulf Coast couldn’t not answer that time. “We had a chance to get some first downs late third quarter, early fourth quarter on offense and really take the pressure off our defense,” Wright said. “We just didn’t do it. We’ll have to go back and look and see where the fail-points were, but it feels like we ran out of gas.” Gulf Coast outgained East Mississippi 233-52 on the ground and wound up leading the time of possession by 3:39. “That’s the frustrating thing,” Wright said. “We were able to run the football somewhat. Probably never as good as you want, but they weren’t able to run the ball at all. Typically, in those kinds of games, even though they’re a really good team, that plays into your hands.” Gulf Coast was flagged for 17 penalties for 137 yards, with East Mississippi hit 12 times for 91 yards. Drake Thornton (So., Gautier/Gautier) led Gulf Coast with nine tackles, and McNulty had seven in addition to his 51-yard interception return and two pass-breakups. Scott Burton (So., Bogue Chitto/Parklane Academy) had 2.5 sacks, and Ricardo Williams (So., Jackson/Provine) had two. Gulf Coast totaled five sacks and seven tackles for loss. LaDareyen Craig (Fr., Mobile Ala./Baker) forced a fumble that Hayden Hill recovered. The Bulldogs remained unbeaten in the South Division, a half-game back of Jones and Hinds. They’ll travel to Pearl River next week to play their archrivals in Poplarville. Kickoff Thursday is set for 7 p.m. Gulf Coast still controls its own destiny for a playoff berth. “The message to the team is this is a really good team,” Wright said. “I think anybody who was at the game tonight would admit Gulf Coast is a really good football team. I’m proud of them. We have a lot of talent and lot of guys who fought really hard tonight against. We’re a good team. We just came out on the short end of an unbelievable game.” For more information on MGCCC’s 11 intercollegiate athletic teams, follow @MGCCCBulldogs on Twitter and MGCCCBulldogs on Facebook, and go to mgcccbulldogs.com. Rep. Ted Budd Embraces Trump Abortion Opposition In N.C. Senate Race
Rep. Ted Budd Embraces Trump Abortion Opposition In N.C. Senate Race
Rep. Ted Budd Embraces Trump, Abortion Opposition In N.C. Senate Race https://digitalalabamanews.com/rep-ted-budd-embraces-trump-abortion-opposition-in-n-c-senate-race/ RALEIGH, N.C. — In competitive races across the U.S., Republican candidates are distancing themselves from their party’s most controversial policies and people — namely, abortion and former President Donald Trump — as Election Day approaches. Not Ted Budd. The North Carolina GOP Senate nominee is leaning into support for abortion restrictions and amity with the former Republican president as Democrats fight for an elusive victory in the Southern swing state. Democratic optimism remains tempered given the state’s recent red tilt, but Democratic officials believe Budd, a low-profile congressman who emerged as the GOP’s Senate nominee largely because of Trump’s backing, gives them a real chance at flipping a seat — and holding the balance of power in Washington — this fall. Disregarding his critics, Budd is set to appear alongside Trump on Friday night at a rally in Wilmington. The Budd campaign was eager to welcome Trump when the former president’s team called, according to adviser Jonathan Felts. “Trump won North Carolina twice, and an in-person rally is helpful,” Felts said, suggesting Trump would help drive turnout, especially “with unaffiliated and/or undecided voters concerned about the economy.” Others aren’t so sure. “The more Trump emerges, the more Trump is in the news, the better for Democrats,” said David Holian, a political science professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Indeed, Trump remains overwhelmingly popular with Republican voters but is less appealing to the moderates and independents who often decide swing-state elections. Trump’s national favorable ratings have been roughly even with, or worse than, President Joe Biden’s in recent weeks. Still, some North Carolina Democrats are far from confident in a state where they have suffered painful losses in recent years. Democratic skepticism comes despite the apparent strength of their Senate nominee, former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, who has a decided fundraising advantage, a record of outperforming other Democrats in statewide elections and a moderate message. She would be the state’s first Black senator if elected. Yet Beasley is also running against negative perceptions of her party. Trump’s rise has fueled a growing sense among some voters in North Carolina, along with those in many other states, that the national Democratic Party has lost touch with the daily struggles of the working class and similar voting blocs. The Democratic-controlled Congress’ focus on climate change, for example, hasn’t helped inspire voters like Talmage Layton, a 74-year-old farmer from Durham. Layton said he doesn’t know whether a North Carolina Democrat can make a difference on Capitol Hill in lowering gas prices or pushing back against climate change policies that other Democrats have embraced. “That’s not anything against Cheri Beasley,” Layton said after a recent meeting with Beasley. “I’m a registered Democrat, and I would have no problem voting for a Democrat. But they’ve got to think about the little guy here.” Not long ago, it looked as if the Democratic Party was poised to take over North Carolina politics. In 2008, Obama carried the state, becoming the first Democrat to do so since 1976, and Democrat Kay Hagan upset GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole. Political experts predicted the Democratic Party would step to dominance as a result of increasing urbanization and out-of-state liberals moving in for tech jobs in the Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte regions. But Republicans took over the state legislature for the first time in over 140 years following the 2010 election and retained it thanks to support from exurban and rural voters and favorably drawn districts. A decade later, Trump became a two-time North Carolina winner, though he won the 2020 election by just 1 percentage point. While Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper managed to win reelection in 2020, Beasley was one of the party’s casualties. She lost a bid to remain chief justice to a Republican rival by just 401 votes. Her near-miss turned her into a rising candidate in the race to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Richard Burr. In one sign of strength, Beasley has consistently raised more money than Budd. And she appears to be generating momentum by seizing on abortion to energize women and independents, relying on the same playbook Democrats have used elsewhere. Budd, meanwhile, has been outspoken in his opposition to abortion. He co-sponsored a House version of a national 15-week abortion ban introduced by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham that even Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell distanced himself from. “My opponent has been in Congress for six years, and every opportunity he’s had to vote for North Carolina, he’s voted against us,” Beasley charged after meeting with farmers at a produce market in Durham before Graham’s bill introduction. Meanwhile, Republicans in competitive elections in states like Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada and Arizona have distanced themselves from their rigid anti-abortion stances in recent weeks. Others have stripped their websites of references to Trump or his favorite talking points. In Virginia, a Republican House candidate removed a Trump reference from her Twitter bio. In New Hampshire, Republican Senate nominee Don Bolduc abruptly reversed himself last week when asked about Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. After spending much of the last year echoing Trump’s lies, Bolduc told Fox News he had done more research and concluded, “The election was not stolen.” Meanwhile, Budd’s campaign refused this week to say whether he would accept the 2022 election results, having already voted to block certification of the 2020 election. Such positions will almost certainly appeal to Trump’s base, but political operatives say Budd needs sizable support from moderate, independent voters to be successful. Unaffiliated voters this year surpassed Democrats to become the largest bloc of registered voters in the state. “Regardless of what your faith background is, you’re dealing with skyrocketing energy prices. You’re dealing with high grocery costs. You’re dealing with high crime. You’re dealing with economic uncertainty,” Budd said after speaking to pastors recently in Greenville. “And so I want to make life better for all North Carolinians and people in our country by the things that I support.” As Budd has struggled to keep pace with Beasley’s fundraising, outside groups have come to his aid. The McConnell-aligned Senate Leadership Fund and the National Republican Senatorial Committee have spent $17.3 million combined on advertising opposing Beasley, according to Federal Election Commission filings. The Senate Majority Fund, which supports Democratic candidates, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have spent close to $4 million in North Carolina while investing far more in high-profile contests in states like Pennsylvania and Arizona. Today’s Top Stories Daily Start your morning in-the-know with the day’s top stories. “We’re committed to making sure voters continue seeing and hearing the truth about Ted Budd,” Senate Majority Fund spokesperson Veronica Woo said. An arm of the pro-abortion-rights EMILY’s List announced this month spending $2.7 million to criticize Budd on abortion as well. During a recent stop at Perkins Orchard in Durham, Beasley chatted with farmers who gathered around picnic tables and near fresh pumpkins for sale. Some said afterward they were glad to see her interest in their plight. Jason Lindsay, 34, a first-generation Black farmer from Rocky Mount, said he’s been frustrated with the divisive political environment but is encouraged by Beasley. “Her temperament here today gave me the first sign of hope that I’ve had in a long time,” he said. ___ Peoples contributed from New York. Insurance companies (like State Farm, Geico, etc) don’t make money paying out claims. They make money collecting insurance payments and settling injury cases for the least amount possible. It’s in your best interest to work with an auto accident attorney if you have been injured in an accident because they are incentivized to get you the maximum amount possible — they get paid a small fee based on the amount you collect. If you do not win, they do not collect a fee. There are three important elements of every injury case: 1. Determining Fault in an Accident  One of the first things that must be done after an accident is determining who is at fault. This can be tricky, especially if multiple parties are involved or the police report doesn’t paint a clear picture. A car accident lawyer will be able to help you gather evidence and build a case so that you can get the compensation you deserve. 2. Calculating Damages  Another thing that car accident lawyers can help with is calculating damages. This includes both economic and non-economic damages. Economic damages include medical bills, missed work, and property damage. Non-economic damages are things like pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. These types of damages can be more difficult to quantify but are still important to consider when negotiating a settlement. 3. Maximizing Your Settlement  Once fault has been determined, and damages have been calculated, it’s time to negotiate a settlement with the other party’s insurance company. Insurance companies are interested in one thing— making money. They will do whatever they can to minimize the amount of money they have to pay out on claims. A car accident lawyer will fight for you and make sure that you get the full amount of compensation that you deserve. Find the Best Car Accident Lawyer Near You Don’t let the insurance company profit when their policy-holder was at fault for your injuries. You’re entitled to fair compensation, and a top-rated Personal Injury Lawyer can ensure you get a settlement that covers all the damages you incurred as a result of your car accident. McCarthy Rolls Out GOP Agenda As He Eyes House Majority Speaker's Gavel
McCarthy Rolls Out GOP Agenda As He Eyes House Majority Speaker's Gavel
McCarthy Rolls Out GOP Agenda As He Eyes House Majority, Speaker's Gavel https://digitalalabamanews.com/mccarthy-rolls-out-gop-agenda-as-he-eyes-house-majority-speakers-gavel/ WASHINGTON — Weeks before the midterms, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Friday rolled out a sweeping legislative agenda that aims to unify his often divided conference and demonstrates what House Republicans would do if voters put them back in power. The product of more than a year of work, the “Commitment to America” platform focuses on four key pillars — the economy, security and public safety, freedom and government accountability — areas that Republicans say President Joe Biden and his party have failed to address since taking control of Washington two years ago.  “What we’re going to roll out today is a commitment to America in Washington — not Washington, D.C., Washington County, Pennsylvania. You want to know why? It’s about you; it’s not about us,” McCarthy told a crowd at a metal sheet working plant in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh.  “We want to roll it out to you, to the entire country, [so you] know exactly what we will do, if you would trust us and give us the ability to take a new direction for this country. But the commitment is a plan — a plan for a new direction.” McCarthy said the first bill House Republicans would attempt to pass next year seeks to repeal the $80 billion in new IRS funding that was included in Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. He also said Republicans would aim to pass a “Parents’ Bill of Rights” that will give parents more of a say in the curriculum that is taught in schools. McCarthy also vowed to create a House select committee to investigate China. Republicans embarked on a listening tour with constituents this summer, McCarthy said, noting the issues that he said came up the most: inflation, high gas and grocery prices; migrants and Fentanyl drugs coming across the southern border; surging crime rates; and young students who have fallen behind from pandemic-related school closings. Democrats “control the House, the Senate, the White House. They control the committees, they control the agencies … but they have no plan to fix all the problems they created,” McCarthy added. The unveiling of McCarthy’s plan highlights a strategic break with his Senate counterpart, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who has decided not to release a legislative agenda before the elections. Instead, McConnell is betting that keeping up attacks on Biden, whose approval rating is underwater, is all that is needed to wrest control of the Senate from Democrats.  McCarthy, however, believes Republicans need to state what they are for to win back the lower chamber, which they last controlled in 2018. For example, to tackle high gas and energy prices and reduce reliance on foreign countries, Republicans say they want to boost domestic oil and natural gas production and cut the permitting process time in half. To respond to rising crime, Republicans would support the hiring of 200,000 more police officers with recruiting bonuses. They would also end remote or “proxy” voting, which was put in place by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a health measure during the pandemic but is still in use. Biden responded to McCarthy later on Friday at a Democratic National Committee event in Washington, D.C., saying that the minority leader’s plan had “little or no detail” and argued that some its priorities — including public safety — were not in line with the Republican Party’s actions. “MAGA Republicans didn’t side with law enforcement. They sided with the insurrectionists — and they still do,” Biden said, echoing a criticism he often makes about GOP supporters of former President Donald Trump. “Don’t tell me you support law enforcement if you can’t condemn what happened on January the sixth.” Biden said McCarthy’s plan also failed to address important voter issues such as abortion access, Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare. And he accused Republicans of “fiscal recklessness” and said the party “blew up the deficit” under Trump. “I think we’re really at an inflection point. It occurs every three, four or five generations,” Biden said. “It’s that consequential. You now have 46 days to chose and the path offered by Democrats is contrasted with the one offered by the MAGA Republicans.” Commitment to America is reminiscent of Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America agenda, which in 1994 helped propel House Republicans into power for the first time in 40 years. Gingrich was elected speaker after those midterms, a path McCarthy hopes to follow.   Election watchers have favored Republicans to win back the House on Nov. 8; they need to pick up a net of just five seats to take control. After speaking to Republicans in the Capitol on Thursday, Gingrich praised McCarthy’s plan as “much deeper and more complex” than his own agenda 28 years ago. McCarthy’s offers more than 100 policy proposals, a website and a Spanish language section that will help members and candidates communicate the GOP’s message to voters, the former speaker said.    “The unity in there was astonishing,” Gingrich said, emerging from the closed-door meeting. “I mean, I was amazed at members who normally find some reason not to be together getting up and saying, ‘We’re on the same team.’” There was a united front flanking McCarthy as well. The two Republican men who last held the job of speaker — John Boehner and Paul Ryan — were driven out of power after public clashes with the far-right Freedom Caucus. But Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a top Donald Trump ally and one of the Freedom Caucus’s most high-profile figures, was seated on stage on Friday directly behind McCarthy. A few seats away was one of the GOP’s most moderate members, Rep. Dave Joyce of Ohio.     “If you look around, we’ve got members here from New York all the way to the border with Tony Gonzales. We’ve got people that have different approaches all the way from Dave Joyce to Marjorie Taylor Greene,” said Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa., who introduced McCarthy and who represents the district where the rollout was held. “But we’re all united behind Kevin McCarthy. He’s the one to unify the party. He’s the one that came up with this plan. He’s the one that’s going to take us back the majority.” Democrats have acknowledged they face an uphill climb in holding the House, but they believe they have a surge of momentum after the Supreme Court voted to overturn abortion rights and a series of legislative wins. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, House Democrats’ campaigns chief for the 2022 cycle, mocked the Gingrich-influenced GOP plan, saying “McCarthy’s heating up leftovers.” “It’s hard to make a commitment to America when a bunch of your members should be committed,” Maloney said. Boeing — The aerospace company was down 6% after it reached a $200 million settlement on charges of misleading investors following two of its jetliners being involved in deadly crashes. FedEx — Shares were down about 4% and hit a new 52-week low after the delivery company announced plans to increase rates between 6.9% and 7.9%. Costco released earnings that beat expectations and showed year-over-year gains, but also said it was experiencing higher labor and freight costs. CalAmp — The software company plummeted 17% despite an earlier rally. CalAmp reported smaller losses than anticipated in its second-quarter earnings, while also noting record-setting revenue within subscription and software categories. Ally Financial — Shares of the financial services company dropped 4% after Wells Fargo downgraded the stock to equal weight from overweight. The Wall Street firm said it will be difficult for Ally to outperform as used vehicle price continues to decline and as the consumer works through the headwind of inflation. Qualcomm — Shares declined 3% despite JPMorgan saying reiterating the stock as overweight due to the wireless company’s automotive opportunities. fuboTV — Shares jumped 3.4% after Wedbush upgraded the streaming service to outperform from neutral, saying fuboTV is at “compelling entry point” for investors. Although the cryptocurrency exchange has been diversifying its services and revenue streams, that business still accounts for the majority of its revenue, and trading activity tends to stall when prices are low. Crypto assets sold off with the rest of risk assets Friday. Advanced Micro Devices — Shares hit a new 52-week low for the semiconductor company, falling 3.2%. The drop comes despite Morgan Stanley reiterating the stock amid what it sees as a correction of broad-based semis taking place. U.K. Markets Rattled By New Government’s Tax And Spending Policies https://digitalalabamanews.com/u-k-markets-rattled-by-new-governments-tax-and-spending-policies/ Business|U.K. Markets Rattled by New Government’s Tax and Spending Policies https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/23/business/uk-government-pound-tax.html Stocks, bonds and the pound were jolted by policy details from the new government that entailed a huge rise in borrowing. Send any friend a story As a subscriber, you have 10 gift articles to give each month. Anyone can read what you share. This article is part of our Daily Business Briefing Sept. 23, 2022Updated 1:39 p.m. ET Britain’s new government announced a sweeping series of tax cuts on Friday, betting it had found the path to economic growth despite high inflation. But the market verdict was swift and negative: The value of British stocks, bonds and the pound sank to new lows against the U.S. dollar, not seen since 1985. The plans will require large increases in government borrowing and have raised expectations that the Bank of England will need to raise interest rates even more aggressively to stop inflation. This will add even more to the cost of these tax cuts and previously announced spending plans to shield households and businesses from the soaring cost of energy. After the announcement by the new chancellor of Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng, the FTSE 100, Britain’s benchmark stock index, fell 2 percent. But the most eye-catching market moves were in British government bonds and the pound. Bond yields, a measure of borrowing costs, shot higher, which will make the interest the government pays on the new debt it issues much more expensive. The yield on benchmark 10-year government bonds climbed to the highest since 2011. And the yield on the five-year bond rose by about half a percentage point, to 4.05 percent, a huge move in a market where daily changes are typically measured in hundredths of a point. “It’s fair to say that the gilt market hated today’s mini-budget,” Jim Leaviss, a bond investor at M&G Investments, said in emailed comments, referring to the market for British government bonds. “In what has already been a weak period for government bonds thanks to global inflation and central bank rate hikes, the U.K. has stood out as an underperformer,” he added. The pound also fell 2 percent against the euro on Friday and dropped more than 3 percent against the U.S. dollar, to $1.09. The British currency has lost more than 19 percent against the dollar this year. “Concerns over the U.K.’s fiscal position combined with its recessionary outlook and extremely high level of inflation leave the pound extremely vulnerable,” analysts at Rabobank wrote in a note. Mr. Kwarteng outlined the government’s plan in a statement to a packed Parliament, promising to accelerate economic growth with a combination of tax cuts and deregulation that echoed the 1980s under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. But the emphasis on lower taxes for companies and workers comes as the government prepares to spend £60 billion over the next six months to subsidize energy costs for households and businesses, the first phase of an expansive plan to freeze the cost of gas and electricity for consumers. “The markets react as they will,” Mr. Kwarteng said in the House of Commons on Friday. “But the growth plan will very soon show we are on the right course and we are steering us to a more prosperous future.” Investors had already appeared anxious about Britain’s fiscal state before the details of the new government’s plan were unveiled by Mr. Kwarteng. Britain’s budget and balance of imports and exports make the country dependent on what a previous central bank governor called “the kindness of strangers” to finance economic plans. “Sterling is in danger,” warned analysts at Deutsche Bank, who have been fretting for weeks about investors losing confidence in Britain and being unwilling to finance its current account deficit. “We worry that investor confidence in the U.K.’s external sustainability is being eroded fast. And the only thing that can prevent the pound from weakening is a very aggressive Bank of England hiking cycle.” Read More…

Police: All Clear Given At Princeton High School, Report Of Active Shooter Is False https://digitalalabamanews.com/police-all-clear-given-at-princeton-high-school-report-of-active-shooter-is-false/ Police: All clear given at Princeton High School, report of active shooter is false ARE YOU? I HAVE A POLICE OFFICER HERE RIGHT NOW, A LIEUTENANT WITH THE SHARONVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT. SORRY TO CHANGE SUBJECTS A LITTLE BIT. HOW ARE YOU? WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? WHAT IS GOING ON? QUICKLY RESPONDED HERE ABOUT 10:15 FOR A CALL REGARDING AN ACTIVE SHOOTING AND INJURIES INSIDE THE SCHOOL. WE WERE ABLE TO QUICKLY ASCERTAIN THAT IT WAS A HOAX. WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE OUT THERE KNOWS THAT ALL THE STUDENTS ARE SAFE. THERE HAVE BEEN NO INJURIES TO THIS EVENT. ALL THE STUDENTS ARE ACCOUNTED FOR AND EVERYONE IS WELL. BECAUSE OF THE DISRUPTION, THE HIGH SCHOOL IS DISMISSING FOR THE DAY. IT IS HOPEFUL TO GET THE INFORMATION OUT AS TO WHERE PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSED TO GO. IF THEY ARE A BUS WRITING STUDENT, THEY WILL BE BUST HOME FROM THE SCHOOL AND I THINK THEY ARE LOADING THE BUSES NOW. IT WILL BE DROPPED OFF AT THEIR NORMAL LOCATION. IF THE STUDENTS ARE DRIVERS, THEY ARE GETTING INTO THEIR CARS AND THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GO HOME. IF STUDENTS NEED TO BE PICKED UP, THE STUDENTS ARE WALKING OVER TO THE VINEYARD CHURCH ON CENTURY CIRCLE BOULEVARD IN SPRINGDALE. THAT IS THE REUNIFICATION SPOT. WE ASK THAT NO PARENTS COME TO THE HIGH SCHOOL EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE IS SAFE. WE HAVE A HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE AND WE ARE DEALING WITH THE CROWDS CAUSING A LOT OF CONFUSION. CENTRAL CIRCLE BOULEVARD, THE VINEYARD CHURCH. WE HAVE OFFICERS THERE AND WE HAVE SOME SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES THERE AS WELL. EVERYONE IS SAFE. EVERYTHING IS FINE. THIS WAS NOT A GOOD CALL. RIGHT NOW, WE ARE IN CROWD MANAGEMENT MODE. KARIN: THE MIDDLE SCHOOL HAS NOT BEEN IMPACTED IN TERMS OF EARLY RELEASE, CORRECT? THE MIDDLE SCHOOL IS GOING TO MAINTAIN THEIR NORMAL DAY. THEY DID GO INTO LOCKDOWN A LITTLE BIT. THE CALL WAS REGARDING THE HIGH SCHOOL AND THE SCHOOL HAS SINCE BEEN CLEARED. IT IS ONE OF THE REASONS IT TOOK US SO LONG TO GIVE AN OFFICIAL ALL CLEAR. WE WENT ROOM TO ROOM TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NOTHING. KARIN: TALK ABOUT THIS. THERE WAS A THREAT. DIDN’T GET CALLED IN? WAS IT THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA? IT WAS A DIRECT 911 CALL FROM A PERSON ALLEGING TO BE A STUDENT IN THE SCHOOL AND DESCRIBED A SHOOTER AND MULTIPLE INJURIES. I THINK THE 911 CALL WAS TRANSFERRED OUT OF CINCINNATI. ONE OF — WHEN THE DISPATCHERS GET A CALL LIKE THAT, THEY DON’T WASTE TIME, SO THAT IS WHERE WE HAD A MASSIVE RESPONSE FROM ALL THESE AGENCIES. KARIN: YOU HAD JUST ABOUT EVERY AGENCY IN GREATER CINCINNATI HERE. YOU WERE HERE FAST. I WAS A FEW MILES AWAY AND YOU HAD THE PLACE SURROUNDED. TALK ABOUT WHEN IT IS A THREAT AND YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. YOU JUST CALL EVERYONE IN? SOMETHING OF THIS MAGNITUDE, IT ABSOLUTELY — IT GOES ALL COUNTIES. WE HAD WESTCHESTER, CINCINNATI POLICE, THE SHERIFF’S HELICOPTER, COUNTY SWAT TEAM. ALL OUR SCHOOLS IN — PRINCETON, WE HAVE FULL-TIME SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS WHO WERE ALREADY CHECKING ROOMS, TRYING TO GIVE CREDIBILITY TO THE THREAT. WE ARE HAPPY WITH OUR RESPONSE AND HOW WELL WE FEEL SUPPORTED. THERE ARE SEVERAL HUNDRED POLICE OFFICERS, PROBABLY. KARIN: THROUGHOUT OHIO, THERE WERE SEVERAL THREATS MADE AT SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT OHIO. DO YOU KNOW IF THIS IS CONNECTED TO THAT? I CAN’T SPEAK TO THAT. OBVIOUSLY, THEY ARE SIMILAR CALLS. ONE, COUNTY, STARK COUNTY, THERE WERE SIMILAR CALLS. WE CAN PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER. WE ARE STILL IN CROWD MANAGEMENT MODE, MAKING SURE STUDENTS GET REUNITED AND THERE IS LESS CONFUSION AT THE SCHOOL. AFTER THAT, IT TURNS INTO A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION FOR EVERYTHING ELSE. KARIN: WHO WILL BE HANDLING THAT? HE SAID THE CALL ORIGINATED IN CINCINNATI. DO YOU THINK THAT WHOEVER MADE THE CALL WITHIN THE CITY OF CINCINNATI? WE HAVE ALREADY GOT PEOPLE LOOKING INTO WHERE THAT CAME FROM. WE WILL START IT. IF THERE ARE MULTIPLE JURISDICTIONS, IT COULD BE A MULTIPLE AGENCY THING OR A FEDERAL THING. KARIN: HAVE YOU HAD A CHANCE TO TALK TO ANY OF THE STUDENTS WHO WERE JUST RELEASED? IF YOU HAVE, HOW ARE THEY DOING? EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A HOAX, DURING THOSE MOMENTS, I WAS OUT HERE WITH THE PARENTS WHO WERE ON THE PHONES WITH THEIR LOVED ONES. THEY WERE PANICKED, TRYING TO BE QUIET, SAYING “MOM, PLEASE COME GET ME.” HOW ARE THEY NOW? THE STUDENTS I TALKED TO LEAVING ARE IN GOOD SPIRITS. BUT IN THE MOMENT WHEN WE WERE IN THERE, GOING ROOM TO ROOM, IT CAUSED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PANIC, WHICH IS WHY WE ARE SO FRUSTRATED AND SO ANGRY THE PEOPLE WHO FEEL THIS IS SOME LEVEL OF AMUSEMENT TO DO THIS. WE ARE GOING TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO HOLD SOMEBODY ACCOUNTABLE FOR IT BECAUSE IT LITERALLY TERRORIZED A LOT OF THESE KIDS. KARIN: I KNOW THE SHARONVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT WORKED VERY CLOSELY WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS. IS THIS SOMETHING YOU TRAINED FOR WITH PRINCETON CITY SCHOOLS? WE HAVE. THIS IS A NEWER BUILDING. WE HAVE DONE A LOT OF TOURS AND OTHER THINGS INSIDE THE BUILDING. ALL OF OUR OFFICERS HAVE KEYS SO THEY CAN SWIPE THROUGH DOORS AND DO WHAT THEY NEED TO DO. STRANGELY ENOUGH, WE HAVE ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING NEXT WEEK. A LOT OF THAT WILL BE APPLICABLE. MAYBE WE CAN TAKE SOME LESSONS FROM TODAY AND APPLY THAT TO OUR TRAINING NEXT WEEK. KARIN: LIEUTENANT, THANK YOU FOR THROWING THE AIR AND GETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT. THERE WAS A LOT OF CONFUSION FROM PARENTS. MY JOB IS TO GET THE WORD OUT FOR WHERE TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD. VINEYARD CHURCH. IF YOUR STUDENT IS A DRIVER, THEY ARE ABLE TO DRIVE. IF THEY ARE A BUS RIDER, THEY WILL BE BUST HOME. MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE NOT AFFECTED AS MUCH THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE, SO THEY ARE GOING TO REMAIN AT SCHOOL FOR THE DAY. KARIN: THANK YOU, LIEUTENANT. STAY SAFE OUT THERE. LIKE YOU HEARD, ONLY THE STUDENTS — THE PICKUP STUDENTS ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE TO BE PICKED UP AT VINEYARD CHURCH. A BUS RIDER WILL BE DROPPED OFF AT HOME. IF THEY DROVE THEIR OWN CARS, THEY ARE NOW FREE TO GO AND GO HOME. I KNOW A LOT OF PARENTS OUT THERE, ESPECIALLY THE ONES I TALKED TO, CANNOT WAIT GET LOCAL BREAKING NEWS ALERTS The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox. Burglary Suspect Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff Charged In New Break-In After Jail Release; ‘It’s Frustrating,’ Police Say https://digitalalabamanews.com/burglary-suspect-arrested-after-hours-long-standoff-charged-in-new-break-in-after-jail-release-its-frustrating-police-say/ Birmingham Real-Time News Updated: Sep. 23, 2022, 11:47 a.m.| Published: Sep. 23, 2022, 11:45 a.m. A burglary suspect who held police at bay for hours in Pleasant Grove is facing new charges after authorities say he committed another break-in less than a week after being released from jail. Darryl Demetrius Miles, 50, was initially arrested Sept. 7 following an hours-long standoff at his Pleasant Grove home. Police that day arrested him after a witness called in a burglary in progress at another home and saw Miles leave someone’s residence with a number of long guns. Miles returned to his own home where he remained holed up. He eventually surrendered about four hours later, and was charged third-degree burglary, second-degree theft of property and resisting arrest. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 10:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and released the following day after posting $16,500 bond. According to Pleasant Grove police and jail records, Miles was arrested again Sept. 22 on new felony charges of fourth-degree theft of property and third-degree burglary. Those crimes happened on Sept. 16. He was booked into the county jail at 12:29 a.m. Friday and released again at 2:24 a.m. after posting a $10,000 signature bond. Court records show Miles pleaded guilty to burglary in 2018 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison with two years to serve. Pleasant Grove police Capt. Danny Reid said the revolving door is frustrating. “We’re just arresting the same people over and over,’’ Reid said. “We, the police, are doing our jobs but the criminal justice is bigger than just the police.” Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission. Want To Know If Radar Detectors Are Legal In Illinois?
Want To Know If Radar Detectors Are Legal In Illinois?
Want To Know If Radar Detectors Are Legal In Illinois? https://digitalalabamanews.com/want-to-know-if-radar-detectors-are-legal-in-illinois/ The other day a friend and I were talking about things you see in or on cars very often. Bench seats, cigarette lighters, and antennas on the exterior. Another thing I feel like I haven’t spotted in a while is a radar detector. If there is one in the car, are radar detectors legal in Illinois? Things from the past are hard to find in vehicles made within the last 5 years or so. I mentioned you don’t see car antennas much anymore but I should specify. You might think, “This idiot… every car has an antenna.” What I’m talking about are long antennas on the hood of the vehicle or retractable antennas. You definitely don’t see those often unless it’s a classic collectible. Bench seats used to be a thing in the front seat. I remember getting stuck in the middle in the front and hating it. That awkward hump was never enjoyable and it was worse if the car/truck was a stick shift. Other Features You Don’t See In Newer Cars Ashtray/lighter combo Hand-cranked windows Audible turn signals Hood ornaments When radar detectors came to mind so did the question of whether or not they are legal in Illinois. When I was a kid I remember hearing about how they were illegal. To be clear, everything ever made during my youth was either bad or illegal so who knows the truth? When I was searching for this answer I stumbled upon an $850 radar detector. What?! Get exceptional detection range and sensitivity with the same Blackfin 706 DSP and SDR AD 9363 chips in our flagship Redline 360c radar detector. I don’t know what any of that jargon means but for that price it had better make my car invisible. Are Radar Detectors Illegal In Illinois? If you’re rolling around Illinois with a visible radar detector suctioned to your windshield or dashboard you’re in the clear. They’re absolutely legal for most vehicles, according to AutoMo. Analysis | If We May: A Proposed Script For Hannity To Correct Trump’s Falsehoods https://digitalalabamanews.com/analysis-if-we-may-a-proposed-script-for-hannity-to-correct-trumps-falsehoods/ Watching the second part of Fox News host Sean Hannity’s conversation with former president Donald Trump on Thursday night, I couldn’t help but notice that Hannity let a lot of false claims from Trump slide. I was not surprised by this, certainly; the reason that Trump grants so many interview to Hannity is that he knows that Hannity’s preferred mode of response to his claims is nodding. But it did strike me that perhaps one reason that Hannity never endeavors to actually correct the record is that perhaps he doesn’t know how. He’s never really done it before! So, in the interest of both offering my assistance to Hannity and to ensure that his viewers have as accurate an understanding of the discussed subjects as possible, I thought it might be useful to create this draft script that Hannity could read on his program Friday night. Good evening and welcome to “Hannity.” Last night, we showed you the second part of my interview with President Trump. It has come to my attention that some of what the president said was inaccurate or misleading. Given this network’s commitment to journalistic integrity, it seemed incumbent upon me, then, to correct the record where necessary. After all, the last thing we want is for you, the viewer, to be misinformed. With that in mind, here is some additional information about what Trump said. It is not the case, as Trump claimed, that the term “global warming” was abandoned in favor of “climate change” because the former term “wasn’t working too well.” In reality, it was Republican communications expert Frank Luntz who recommended the latter term to defuse concern about the problem. It is also not true that “years ago … they thought it was global cooling,” as both Trump and I claimed. In reality, that idea was a fringe claim that has been elevated not because it was the consensus at the time but because it serves as a rejoinder to the consensus now. It’s not the case that $85 billion worth of military equipment was “left behind” when the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan. First of all, the figure that’s been claimed was $83 billion. But second, that figure is vastly overinflated. While it is true that the U.S. “didn’t lose one soldier in 18 months,” it’s important to understand that this is largely because President Trump made a deal with the Taliban not to attack American forces in exchange for setting a timetable to withdraw. It’s not true, as Trump claimed, that crime in New York is “the worst we’ve ever had.” In fact, violent crime in New York City is far lower than in decades past and murders are down in the city this year. While it is true that “more people died under Biden than under me,” as Trump claimed about the coronavirus pandemic, that’s in part because Trump supporters were less likely to get vaccinated against the virus and, as a result, the per capita death toll in Trump-voting counties has consistently been higher than in Biden-voting ones. The flu pandemic a century ago was in 1918, not 1917. It’s not true that Trump recommended the military go to the Capitol before Jan. 6. It is not true that he sent the National Guard to Minneapolis during the unrest in 2020 “against the governor’s wishes.” In fact, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) made the first request. It is not true that Trump’s favorability numbers went up after New York’s attorney general announced a lawsuit against him; there is no way a valid poll could have been fielded between that announcement and our interview. It is also not true that his poll numbers went up in the wake of the search of Mar-a-Lago. Trump’s assertions that he “rebuilt” the military have been repeatedly identified as exaggerated. Fox News regrets the errors. Oh, one more, actually: While Trump claimed that he respects many people in the media, we were unable to confirm that assertion. We can confirm that, as he stated, he likes me, Sean Hannity, a lot. [cut to commercial] Read More…

Major Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card Changes: Platinum Status & More! https://digitalalabamanews.com/major-marriott-bonvoy-brilliant-card-changes-platinum-status-more/ In the interest of full disclosure, OMAAT earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers (terms apply) that we have found for each product or service. Link: Apply now for the refreshed Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express® Card Huge changes have been made to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express® Card (review), which is Marriott’s premium personal credit card. The card has added several awesome new perks, including Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status without any sort of a spending requirement… wow! As you’d expect, the annual fee has increased as well. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card annual fee increases to $650 Let’s start with the bad news. The annual fee on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card has increased from $450 to $650 (Rates & Fees). This applies immediately for new card applications. For those who opened their account prior to September 22, 2022, the annual fee increase will take effect on renewal dates on or after January 1, 2023. So for a brief period, existing cardmembers can enjoy the new benefits without paying a higher annual fee. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card gets awesome new benefits While the annual fee on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card has increased considerably, the card is also getting several new perks. There are positive changes when it comes to the ability to earn elite status, the value of free night awards, and more. Let’s cover the details of what’s changing. Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card now offers Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status for as long as you’re a cardmember. This is huge, given the perks of Platinum Elite status, which include room upgrades (up to standard suites), breakfast or lounge access at most brands, bonus points, and much more. This is where status with Marriott Bonvoy really starts to get valuable, and this is the easiest readily available pathway we’ve ever seen to Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status. This will understandably interest many. Even if you’re not a Marriott loyalist, Marriott has a huge footprint, so status with the group comes in handy. Receive Platinum Elite status for being a cardmember 25 Marriott Bonvoy elite nights toward status annually The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card now offers 25 elite nights toward status annually (previously, the card offered 15 elite nights). Now, of course you already receive Bonvoy Platinum Elite status just for having the card, but you don’t earn the elite nights that go along with it. So if you want to earn Marriott Bonvoy Choice Benefits (like Suite Night Awards) or go for Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite or Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite status, this could come in handy. With this change, you can now earn up to 40 elite nights annually just for having two Marriott credit cards, as you can earn them from one personal and one business card — you can earn 25 elite nights from this card, and 15 elite nights from the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card (review). If you’re an existing cardmember, you may have noticed that 10 additional elite nights have already posted to your account. That’s because of this new perk, as you’re going from 15 elite nights to 25 elite nights. Earn 25 elite nights annually for having the card Marriott free night award worth up to 85,000 Bonvoy points The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card now offers an anniversary free night certificate every year, valid at a property costing up to 85,000 Bonvoy points. On top of that, you can always top off the free night award with up to 15,000 points, to redeem at a property costing up to 100,000 points. This is an awesome change, as previously the card’s free night certificate was valid at a property costing up to 50,000 Bonvoy points — that’s a significant difference, and means you’ll be able to redeem this at much more premium properties. The card’s free night award just got more valuable Spend $60K, earn more Marriott Bonvoy Choice Benefits Starting in January 2023, there will be a nice additional incentive to spend money on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card. If you make $60,000 in purchases on the card in a calendar year, you’ll be able to select an earned Choice Rewards benefit. Specifically, you’ll be able to choose one of the following: Five Suite Night Awards, each of which can be used to confirm a suite upgrade for one night up to five days prior to arrival A free night award, valid at a Marriott property costing up to 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points $750 off a bed from Marriott Bonvoy boutiques This is in addition to whatever Choice Benefits you’d ordinarily earn for crossing 50 or 75 elite nights in a year. This could be a real incentive to spend money on the card, especially when you consider the opportunity to get a free night certificate worth up to 85,000 points. Earn Choice Benefits for spending on the card Up to $300 per year in restaurant credits The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card now offers up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year for dining purchases at restaurants worldwide. This comes in the form of a $25 credit each month. This replaces the card previously offering a $300 annual Marriott credit. Ultimately this restaurant credit should be easy enough to maximize. Receive a $25 monthly dining credit with the card What’s not changing about the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant While a lot has changed with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card, several things aren’t changing: The points earning structure on the card remains unchanged, as you can earn 6x Bonvoy points on eligible Marriott hotel purchases, 3x Bonvoy points at restaurants worldwide and on flights booked directly with airlines, and 2x points on all other eligible purchases You can receive a Priority Pass Select membership (enrollment required) You can get a statement credit for the application fee of TSA PreCheck (every 4.5 years) or Global Entry (every 4 years) The card continues to offer a Priority Pass membership Earn 150K points with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card If you’re interested in picking up the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card, the card is offering a bonus of 150,000 Bonvoy points after spending $5,000 within the first three months. Personally I value Bonvoy points at 0.7 cents each, so to me that bonus is worth a huge $1,050. And of course you can enjoy your Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite benefits when you redeem those points. Redeem your Bonvoy points at the St. Regis Venice My take on Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card changes Wow, the changes to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card are huge. It’s really significant that you can now earn Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status just for holding onto a credit card. Even with the annual fee on this card now being $650, I think the value here is a slam dunk. Just to do some basic “accounting” on the card: Most people should be able to fully utilize the $300 annual dining credit; this could be as simple as spending $25 per month at Starbucks I’m thrilled that the annual free night award is now valid at a property costing up to 85,000 Bonvoy points per year, with the potential to use up to 15,000 Bonvoy points to top it off, and redeem at a property costing up to 100,000 Bonvoy points; I easily value this certificate at $350, and that’s very conservative The way I view it, those two benefits alone justify the annual fee. That doesn’t even account for the value of Platinum Elite status, the 25 elite nights toward status, the Priority Pass membership, and more. As a Marriott Bonvoy lifetime Platinum Elite member, the Platinum Elite status as such doesn’t add much for me. However, I welcome the 25 elite nights toward status annually. Because I also have a Marriott business credit card, that means I’m earning 40 elite nights toward status annually without actually staying a night. That gets me closer to earning Choice Benefits, which I value immensely. This card has a great value proposition Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card FAQs There are some questions that I’ve been getting over and over regarding the changes to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card, so I wanted to address those in this section. If I missed any, please let me know and I’ll get them added. Does credit card status count toward lifetime elite status? It’s possible to earn lifetime Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status by racking up 600 elite nights and having 10 cumulative years of Platinum Elite status or higher. Elite nights and status earned with Marriott credit cards count toward that requirement, including the Platinum Elite status offered by this card. Are you eligible for the Bonvoy Brilliant Card bonus? Marriott credit card application restrictions can be complicated. In addition to not being eligible for the welcome offer on the Bonvoy Brilliant Card if you’ve already had it, here are the other application restrictions to be aware of: Welcome offer not available to applicants who (i) have or have had The Ritz-Carlton® Credit Card from JPMorgan or the J.P. Morgan Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card in the last 30 days, (ii) have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card from Chase, or the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or (iii) received a new Card Member bonus or upgrade offer for the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card ...

Fetterman’s Health At Center Of US Senate Race In Pennsylvania As Oz Fights To Close Gap https://digitalalabamanews.com/fettermans-health-at-center-of-us-senate-race-in-pennsylvania-as-oz-fights-to-close-gap/ Amid questions over his recovery from a stroke and demands he release his medical records, John Fetterman, the Democratic nominee for US Senate in Pennsylvania, asked supporters if they had faced health challenges themselves. He added: “I truly hope for each and every one of you you didn’t have a doctor in your life making fun of it.” The former mayor of Braddock, now lieutenant governor, was speaking at a campaign rally in Blue Bell. He suffered a stroke in May. His Republican opponent is Mehmet Oz, a heart surgeon who became famous on morning TV, admitted in Senate testimony to promoting diet pills that do not work, insists he does not actually live in New Jersey and is endorsed by Donald Trump. The Oz campaign has repeatedly mocked Fetterman’s health problems. Doctored videos which seem to show Fetterman struggling to speak have spread on social media. Fetterman still leads in polling but the gap has closed as Fetterman’s health has become a campaign issue. Democrats insist their candidate is fine. “I was with him Saturday in Scranton,” Bob Casey, the serving Democratic US senator in Pennsylvania, told NBC News. “He had 1,000 people! … that connection is very strong. The other side is trying to break that and they’re having real trouble because they don’t have that same connection. That’s what the race is about.” Pat Toomey, the retiring Republican whose seat is up for grabs, told the same outlet: “If John Fetterman were elected to the Senate, and he’s not able to communicate effectively, if he’s not able to engage with the press, if he’s not able to engage with colleagues, he will not be able to do the job.” Oz has pressured Fetterman to commit to campaign debates. Earlier this month, the Republican told reporters: “John Fetterman is either healthy and he’s dodging the debate because he does not want to answer for his radical left positions, or he’s too sick to participate in the debate.” Fetterman then said he would debate Oz once. The event is set for 25 October. Oz has now released his medical records. According to the Associated Press, a New York City doctor found the 62-year-old to be in “excellent health” after an annual check-up on Thursday. The AP said the Fetterman campaign did not immediately comment. Pointing out that Pennsylvania could decide control of the Senate, now split 50-50, the Washington Post editorial board called for Fetterman to release his records. The board wrote: “Mr Fetterman is asking voters for a six-year contract without giving them enough information to make sound judgments about whether he’s up for such a demanding job. “We have called for full disclosure of health records from candidates for federal office in both parties, including Donald Trump and Joe Biden, and we believe Mr Fetterman should release his medical records for independent review.” The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has also called for Fetterman to release his records, to “reassure the public”. The Washington Post also said Fetterman should commit to more than one debate. It said: “Since returning to the campaign trail, Mr Fetterman has been halting in his performances. He stammers, appears confused and keeps his remarks short. He has held no news conferences. “Mr Fetterman acknowledges his difficulties with auditory processing, which make it hard for him to respond quickly to what he’s hearing. He receives speech therapy – and we wish him a speedy, full recovery – but the lingering, unanswered questions about his health, underscored by his hesitation to debate, are unsettling.” Speaking to NBC, the Fetterman adviser Rebecca Katz said: “John is communicating effectively with the people of Pennsylvania and running one of the best Senate campaigns in the country. “We don’t need to speculate about whether he can be an effective leader in January, after he’s had four more months to recover. He’s effective right now.” Read More…

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, and other Republicans on the panel sent a letter at the end of last month seeking to clarify NARA’s role in the FBI search at Mar-a-Lago “and reiterate the request for a briefing and all related documents and communications,” per a statement. In Thursday’s letter, Wall didn’t rule out handing over records in the future. “To the extent that we are able to release any additional records responsive to your request in the future, we will make them available to you,” she said. WATCH: Dothan Welcome Baker To Rip-Hewes For Homecoming https://digitalalabamanews.com/watch-dothan-welcome-baker-to-rip-hewes-for-homecoming/ DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – As homecoming festivities are celebrated at Rip-Hewes Stadium tonight, a big 7A non-region clash will be happening in Week 5 of the 2022 season on the gridiron as the Dothan Wolves battle the Baker Hornets. The Wolves and Hornets will be meeting for the first time ever in football. Dothan as it is began play in 2019 after the consolidation of Dothan, the Tigers who dated back to 1912, and Northview, the Cougars who began play in 1978. Neither the old Dothan or Northview faced Baker, who have had an active program since 1951. Dothan will look to continue an impressive 2022 campaign, being currently ranked #9 in 7A according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association rankings with a 4-1 record. The Wolves are coming off back-to-back region wins, a 14-10 victory over Prattville in Week 3 and last week’s high scoring 57-43 triumph over Smiths Station. Dothan’s lone loss of the year was at Auburn, in a lopsided 42-14 defeat. For Baker, they’ll look to bounce back after a tough region loss last week at Daphne by a score of 25-14. The Hornets are 2-3 on the year, losing in their first two games of the season to Theodore (32-3) and Wetumpka (24-21) before bouncing back to start region play with two big wins over Davidson (41-16) and Foley (56-35) before last week’s derailment. Ginni Thomas Agrees To Interview With Jan. 6 House Committee
Ginni Thomas Agrees To Interview With Jan. 6 House Committee https://digitalalabamanews.com/ginni-thomas-agrees-to-interview-with-jan-6-house-committee/ Conservative activist Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, has agreed to an interview with the House select committee leading the probe into the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Thomas’ attorney, Mark Paoletta, confirmed her voluntary participation with the committee’s investigation to CNN. “As she has said from the outset, Mrs. Thomas is eager to answer the Committee’s questions to clear up any misconceptions about her work relating to the 2020 election. She looks forward to that opportunity,” Paoletta said in a statement to the news outlet. The committee did not immediately release details about how it will conduct the interview. NPR reports that committee members suggested that it might be held behind closed doors. The panel is expected to hold its last public hearing on Sept. 28, so they could possibly speak with her after that date. According to The New York Times, the committee, led by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and GOP Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), requested an interview with Thomas in June. The revelation of her text message exchanges with Donald Trump’s White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows prompted the request. In those messages, she encouraged the Trump team to continue its efforts to challenge then President-elect Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. The committee is particularly interested in finding out more about Thomas’ communications with attorney John Eastman, who urged then-Vice President Mike Pence to reject or delay the Congressional certification of the Electoral College votes. Committee members have at least one email between Thomas and Eastman after a federal judge ordered Eastman to turn over documents related to the investigation. In her support of Trump’s false claim that he won the election, Thomas reportedly urged state lawmakers in Arizona and Wisconsin to overturn the election results. She also attended the rally that preceded the Jan. 6 Capitol Insurrection. Read More…

Anyone can read what you share. Don Bolduc with his campaign staff during his primary night watch party. After his primary, he changed his mind on the 2020 election results he had long questioned.Credit…John Tully for The New York Times Sept. 23, 2022, 10:42 a.m. ET As post-primary pivots go, Don Bolduc’s overnight transformation from “Stop the Steal” evangelist to ratify-the-results convert could land him in a political hall of fame. It was an about-face so sudden and jarring that it undermined the tell-it-like-it-is authenticity with which he’d earned the Republican nomination for Senate from New Hampshire. But Mr. Bolduc was hardly the only Republican candidate to edge away from his public insistence, despite a lack of evidence, that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald J. Trump, or that 2020 had undermined the integrity of American elections. Blake Masters in Arizona, Tiffany Smiley in Washington State and Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania have all made pivots — some artfully, some not — as the ardent, Trump-loyal voters who decided the Republican primaries shrink in the rearview mirror, and a more cautious, broader November electorate comes into view. These three Senate candidates haven’t quite renounced their questioning of the 2020 election — to right-wing audiences of podcasts, radio shows and Fox News, they still signal their skepticism — but they have shifted their appeals to the swing voters they need to win on Nov. 8. The real question now is: Can they get away with it? “I can tell you generally that candidates who do a 180-degree reversal in the middle of a campaign have to have a thought-out, strategic reason for doing so,” said Dave Carney, a New Hampshire Republican consultant who backed Mr. Bolduc’s primary opponent, Chuck Morse, but now supports Mr. Bolduc. “The pain has to be worth it,” he added. In some sense, the contortions are about having it both ways: signaling to undecided swing voters that a candidate is willing to move toward the middle, while winking at the right-wing base. After his primary victory in the Arizona Senate race, Mr. Masters, who was Mr. Trump’s pick to take on Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat, removed language from his campaign website that falsely claimed the 2020 election had been stolen. “If we had had a free and fair election, President Trump would be sitting in the Oval Office today,” the website had unambiguously proclaimed. Image Blake Masters removed language from his campaign website that falsely claimed the 2020 election had been stolen.Credit…Rebecca Noble for The New York Times Once that erasure came to light, however, the Masters campaign let it be known that while the website may have changed, the candidate’s views had not. “I still believe the election was not free and not fair,” Mr. Masters told an Arizona radio station early this month. “I think if everybody followed the rules and the law as written, President Trump would be in the Oval Office.” Similarly, Dr. Oz has obscured his views more than changed them. After saying in April that “we cannot move on” from the 2020 election, Dr. Oz told reporters this month that he “would not have objected to” affirming President Biden’s election had he been in the Senate on Jan. 6, 2021. “By the time the delegates and those reports are sent to the U.S. Senate, our job was to approve it. That’s what I would have done,” he said. Later that day, however, on the Fox News Channel, Dr. Oz answered a viewer’s question about whether the election was stolen by saying, “There’s lots more information we have to gather in order to determine that, and I’d be very desirous of gathering some.” Ms. Smiley, the Republican Senate nominee in Washington, dropped “election integrity” from a remade website after her primary victory, and with it, the statement that “the 2020 elections raised serious questions about the integrity of our elections.” Still, in a recent appearance on CNN, Ms. Smiley used a coded “he is our president” answer repeatedly when she was asked if Mr. Biden had been legitimately elected — language other Republicans have used to obscure whether they believe the outcome of the 2020 voting was accurate, while still affirming that Mr. Biden is indeed the president. “The campaign’s position has not changed on this issue,” said a Smiley campaign spokeswoman, Elisa Carlson. “Tiffany has long said that it should be easy to vote and hard to cheat — a position that is still reflected on our website.” Image Tiffany Smiley dropped “election integrity” from a remade website after her primary victory.Credit…Ted S. Warren/Associated Press Mr. Bolduc’s problem has been his complete lack of subtlety or coded messaging, said Fergus Cullen, a former chairman of the New Hampshire Republican State Committee who is now a city councilor in Dover. At a Republican debate just before the Sept. 13 primary, Mr. Bolduc, a retired brigadier general in the Army, declared unequivocally, “I signed a letter with 120 other generals and admirals saying that Trump won the election, and, damn it, I stand by my letter.” He added for good measure, “I’m not switching horses, baby. This is it.” How Times reporters cover politics. We rely on our journalists to be independent observers. So while Times staff members may vote, they are not allowed to endorse or campaign for candidates or political causes. This includes participating in marches or rallies in support of a movement or giving money to, or raising money for, any political candidate or election cause. His nomination clinched, Mr. Bolduc on Sept. 15 left that horse in a ditch. “I’ve done a lot of research on this,” he said on Fox News after being shown a clip of his promise to stay the course on election denial, “and I’ve spent the past couple weeks talking to Granite Staters all over the state from every party, and I have come to the conclusion — and I want to be definitive on this — the election was not stolen.” When a flabbergasted Fox host, Dana Perino, pointed to Mr. Bolduc’s adamant statements before the primary, he shrugged: “You know, live and learn, right?” General-election turns to the center are nothing new, but few would say Mr. Bolduc, a political newcomer whose authenticity was his calling card, executed his smoothly. “Don spent the last three years hanging with primary voters, a third to a half who bought into the whole stolen-election thing, or at least thought something was fishy,” Mr. Cullen said. “When you spend that much time around people who feel that way, it’s easy to think everybody felt that way.” Then he won the primary and realized that it just wasn’t so, Mr. Cullen added. Mr. Bolduc’s post-primary switcheroo created a new problem: Even as he sought to court a general-election electorate, he now also needed to mend fences with his base. Supporters posted a Facebook message that they said Mr. Bolduc had sent them in which he explained his shift. Yes, he wrote with no evidence, election fraud in 2020 was rife — in mail-in ballots, voting machines and drop-box stuffing. But, he added: “Was Biden put into the presidency through a constitutional process … yes.” Mr. Bolduc’s Democratic opponent, Senator Maggie Hassan, has stuck largely to a campaign centered on abortion rights, and recently hit Mr. Bolduc on comments he made in August seemingly backing the privatization of Medicare. But she has used his flip-flop on election denial to say Mr. Bolduc “is trying to mislead Granite Staters and really hide his extreme record.” Image Dr. Mehmet Oz told reporters this month that he “would not have objected to” affirming President Biden’s election had he been in the Senate on Jan. 6, 2021.Credit…Hannah Beier for The New York Times Dr. Oz had an easier task, said G. Terry Madonna, a longtime Pennsylvania political analyst and pollster, now at Millersville University. Though Dr. Oz was endorsed by Mr. Trump and stood by the former president as he spouted lies about the 2020 election, Dr. Oz’s own statements on election fraud were vague. Now, he may be making headway with swing voters to close the gap with his Democratic opponent, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman. Moreover, Mr. Fetterman has so far shied away from attacking Dr. Oz on his affiliation with Mr. Trump, said Berwood A. Yost, director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College, because Mr. Fetterman believes he can win over Trump voters in the state’s small towns and rural stretches. Attacks on the man they still love may not help Mr. Fetterman make that sale. “Trump attacks are not part of Fetterman’s campaign,” Mr. Yost said. “He’s trying to appeal to Trump supporters with ‘I look like you, I sound like you, and I’m running against Washington, too.’” That has allowed Dr. Oz to tack to the center to try to win over voters in the “collar counties” around Philadelphia. But Mr. Fetterman’s aides note that Dr. Oz has not locked up the core Republican vote the way the Trump-aligned State Senator Doug Mastriano has in the Pennsylvania governor’s race. What Dr. Oz is showing in appealing to moderate voters in the general election, they contend, is not so much a pivot as a forked tongue. “Oz is a total fraud who says one thing when he’s in the suburbs and one thing when he’s rallying with Trump and Mastriano,” said Emilia Winter Rowland, a Fetterman campaign spokeswoman. Republican Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy Unveils House GOP’s Big Ideas, But Challenges Ahead https://digitalalabamanews.com/republican-leader-rep-kevin-mccarthy-unveils-house-gops-big-ideas-but-challenges-ahead/ MONONGAHELA, Pa. (AP) — Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is heading to Pennsylvania on Friday to directly confront President Joe Biden and the party in power, unveiling a midterm election agenda with sweeping Trump-like promises despite the House GOP’s sometimes spotty record of delivering and governing in Congress. McCarthy, who is poised to seize the speaker’s gavel if Republicans win control of the House in the fall, hopes to replicate the strategy former Speaker Newt Gingrich used to spark voter enthusiasm and sweep House control in a 1994 landslide. The House GOP’s “Commitment to America” gives a nod to that earlier era but updates it for Trump, with economic, border security and social policies to rouse the former president’s deep well of supporters in often-forgotten regions like this rusty landscape outside Pittsburgh. “We have a plan for a new direction for America,” McCarthy told The Associated Press. On Friday, the House Republican leader will stand with other lawmakers to roll out the GOP agenda, offering a portrait of party unity despite the uneasy coalition that makes up the House minority — and the Republican Party itself. The GOP has shifted from its focus on small government, low taxes and individual freedoms to a more populist, nationalist and, at times, far-right party, essentially still led by Donald Trump, who remains popular despite the deepening state and federal investigations against him. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Meg Kinnard/AP) Propelled by Trump’s “Make America Great Again” voters, the Republicans need to pick up just a few seats to win back control of the narrowly-split House, and replace Speaker Nancy Pelosi. But even so, McCarthy’s ability to lead the House is far from guaranteed. While Republicans and Trump did pass tax cuts into law, the GOP’s last big campaign promise, repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, collapsed in failure. A long line of Republican speakers, including Gingrich, John Boehner and Paul Ryan, have been forced from office or chose early retirement, often ground down by party infighting. “House Republicans are really good at running people out of town,” said Matt Schlapp, chairman of the Conservative Political Action Coalition, or CPAC. McCarthy, first elected to office in 2006, is among the remaining political survivors of those House Republican battles, and he’s a new style of leader who has shown more ability to communicate than to legislate. A key architect of the Republican “tea party” takeover in 2010, the California Republican personally recruited the newcomers to Congress — many who had never served in public office and are long gone. McCarthy was an early Trump endorser, and has remained close to the former president, relying on his high-profile endorsements to propel GOP candidates for Congress. He abandoned an earlier bid to become speaker when support from his colleagues drifted. The “Commitment to America” reflects the strength of McCarthy’s abilities, but also his weaknesses. He spent more than a year pulling together the House GOP’s often warring factions — from the far-right MAGA to what’s left of the more centrist ranks — to produce a mostly agreed upon agenda. But the one-page “commitment” preamble is succinct, essentially a pocket card, though it is expected to be filled in with the kind of detail that is needed to make laws. “They talk about a lot of problems,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md. “They don’t have a lot of solutions.” In traveling to battleground Pennsylvania, a state where Biden holds emotional ties from his early childhood, McCarthy intends to counter the president’s fiery Labor Day weekend speech, in which he warned of rising GOP extremism after the Jan 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, with a more upbeat message. The event is billed as more of a conversation with the GOP leader and lawmakers rather than a stirring address in a uniquely contested state. Along with many as five House seats Republicans believe they can pick up in Pennsylvania in November, the state has one of the most watched Senate races, between Democrat John Fetterman and Trump-backed Mehmet Oz, that will help determine control of Congress. Top of the ticket is the seismic governor’s matchup between the GOP’s Doug Mastriano, who was seen outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, and Democrat Josh Shapiro. “If you are a hardline, populist, and you really want anger, Kevin’s a little frustrating because he’s not going to be angry enough for you,” Gingrich said. “On the other hand, if what you want is to have your values implemented and passed in the legislation, he is a really good leader and organizer.” Gingrich has been working with McCarthy and his team to craft the style and substance of the proposal. The former speaker, who has been asked by the Jan. 6 committee investigating the Capitol attack for an interview, was on hand Thursday in Washington, joining McCarthy as he unveiled the plans privately to House Republicans, who have been mixed on the approach. Mostly, the GOP pocket card hits broad strokes — energy independence, security and an end to liberal social policies, particularly in schooling. Conservative Republicans complain privately that McCarthy isn’t leaning hard enough into their priorities, as he tries to appeal to a broader swath of voters and hold the party together. Many are eager to launch investigations into the Biden administration and the president’s family, with some calling for impeachment. Legislatively, some House Republicans want to fulfill the party’s commitment to banning abortion, supporting Sen. Lindsey Graham’s bill prohibiting the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy. In a sign of the pressures ahead for McCarthy, dozens of House GOP lawmakers signed on to plans from Trump-aligned Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to prevent many gender reassignment procedures for minors, celebrating the Georgian as courageous for taking such a hardline approach. She and others were invited to join Friday’s event, as McCarthy seeks their backing. Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, a member of the conservative Freedom Caucus, has advocated for withholding federal funds as leverage for policy priorities, the tactic that engineered past government shutdowns. “Putting out like, you know, principles about, ‘Well, we’ll secure the border.’ I mean, okay, but what are we gonna do about it?” Roy said. “The end of the day, I want specific actionable items that’s going to show that we’re going to fight for the American people.” It’s notable that McCarthy alone has proposed a plan if Republicans win control of the House chamber. In the Senate, Republican leader Mitch McConnell has declined to put forward an agenda, preferring to simply run against Biden and Democrats in the midterm election. “Kevin’s done a very good job of being in position to become the speaker. And then the question is, what do you do with that? Schlapp said. “This helps as a road map.” Read More…
