James Clemens Tops Region Rival Sparkman 41-17 https://digitalalabamanews.com/james-clemens-tops-region-rival-sparkman-41-17/ Gio Lopez ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as James Clemens beat Sparkman 41-17 for its second win over the season, handing the Senators their second loss. Gabe Ballard also accounted for three touchdowns – two rushing and one on a 5-yard catch – for the Jets in the Class 7A, Region 4 game. Luke Boseck kicked two field goals, a 30-yarder and a 25-yarder. James Clemens (2-5, 2-2) led 24-10 at halftime at Sparkman Field in Harvest. “We’ve been through a lot of adversity this year,” Jets coach Chad McGehee said. “We’ve had 17 injuries throughout the season at one time or another, mostly on offense. We are playing about 10 sophomores and the kids have worked really hard and we’re getting better. Playing all these young guys we’re getting better. “Tonight, we just put it all together finally – all three phases, offense, defense, special teams. Sparkman was the No. 1 scoring offense in the state and they were the No. 1 defense in the state. They were giving up 6.6 points a game. And we challenged our kids to come out and perform and their backs were against the wall. We have to win these games to get in the playoffs.” James Clemens QB Giovanni Lopez signaling to his receiver downfield in the first half of the Sparkman senator’s game at Sparkman field Harvest, Ala., Friday Sept. 30, 2022 (Kevin Farrell | preps@al.com) The host Senators (4-2, 2-2) scored on Josh Ward’s 8-yard pass to Karmelo Montgomery and a 5-yard run by Jayden Thomas. Christian Burrus kicked a 21-yard field goal. Stars of the game: Lopez, a South Alabama commit, completed 13-of-37 passes for 353 yards and one touchdown with one interception. He had nine carries for 24 yards and scored from 1 and 5 yards out. Ballard, also a senior, scored on runs of 1 and 6 along with his TD catch for his first three-touchdown game. Play of the game: Trailing 3-0, Lopez put the Jets ahead to stay with his 1-yard run at 3:40 in the first quarter. Boseck added the extra point for a 7-3 lead. Key sequence: After a Sparkman fumble, James Clemens marched 56 yards in three plays, capped by Ballard’s 1-yard run. Boseck’s extra point made it 14-3 at 1:36 in the first. Stat sheet: James Clemens – Ballard had 14 carries for 38 yards and two touchdowns plus two catches for 12 yards and a TD. Senior corner/safety Jamal Mayers had one of the Jets’ two pass interceptions. Sparkman – Ward completed 13-of-23 passes for 69 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. Montgomery had five catches for 32 yards and a touchdown. Matthew Rozier had five catches for 22 yards. By the numbers: 416 … James Clemens total yards with 353 passing and 63 rushing. 303 … Sparkman total yards with 234 rushing and 69 passing. 1 … James Clemens turnover on an intercepted pass. 3 … Sparkman turnovers on two intercepted passes and one lost fumble. 5 … consecutive wins for James Clemens over the Senators. The Jets lead the all-time series 9-2. Coachspeak: “I’m really proud of this team. A lot of teams could’ve folded at 1-5. To come out here and do this shows a lot of character.” – McGehee “I just think first half they kept us off-balance on defense. I thought offense played well. We just didn’t get them off the field enough times. We’ve just got to play better.” – Sparkman coach Laron White They said it: “I just listened to what the coaches had to call and I just executed. Also just got some studs on the outside (at receiver). It (this win) means a lot because we were down 1-5, just started to figure something out.” – Lopez “Our O-line blocked really well. And then I hit the hole and just got loose. It (this win) means a lot. It keeps our hope up. It keeps us in playoff hopes.” – Ballard “Just played as a team. We were smart, physical.” – Mayers What’s next: In 7A, Region 4 games, James Clemens will host Austin while Sparkman entertains Bob Jones. Foley Upsets Fairhope With 4th-Quarter Rally
Foley Upsets Fairhope With 4th-Quarter Rally
Foley Upsets Fairhope With 4th-Quarter Rally https://digitalalabamanews.com/foley-upsets-fairhope-with-4th-quarter-rally/ There are wins that can make a team’s season. Then, there are wins that can change the direction of a program. With Friday night’s 39-38 upset of Class 7A, No. 2-ranked Fairhope, the Foley Lions could be headed to a new level. “I’m just so thankful for our young people,” Foley coach Deric Scott said. “They played so hard and played through so much adversity. Now they know they can get it done. We’re turning some corners.” Foley battled back from a 38-22 deficit at the start the fourth quarter. The winning points came on a 23-yard field goal by Matt Owens with 1:42 remaining. Fairhope had one final possession with a chance to win, but Caden Creel’s pass was intercepted by Makai Mitchell to seal the victory. “I saw the quarterback roll left and I knew I couldn’t let anybody get behind me,” Mitchell said. “But when I saw he was going to throw it back over the middle, I knew I had time to get there and make the play. I knew I had it the whole way.” The loss spoiled another outstanding performance by Creel. The senior scored on runs of 46 and 6 yards. He finished with 130 rushing yards on 17 carries and completed 15-of-24 passes for 125 yards and a 30-yard scoring strike to Qualin McCants. McCants also scored on a 5-yard run before exiting the game after only one third-quarter carry because of an injury. His replacement, Preston Godfrey, was excellent in relief, totaling 88 yards on 12 carries and a 7-yard touchdown run. Foley’s Kolton Nero was perhaps the most impactful player in the game. The bruising runner carried 17 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns. In the first quarter, Nero threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell, scored on a 25-yard run and had two tackles for losses on consecutive plays. The halfback pass staked the visiting Lions to a 7-0 early lead. Fairhope answered with McCants’ touchdown. Fairhope took advantage of a short punt to get a 41-yard field goal from Ryan McNeill. But McNeill was injured on the ensuing kickoff, which proved to be key later in the game when the Pirates were stopped on a fourth-down play rather than attempt a field goal. Fairhope led 25-15 late in the first half before Reece Tynes found Alabama commit Perry Thompson for a 6-yard touchdown pass to close the halftime lead to 25-22. At the half, Fairhope had 238 yards on 37 plays, while Foley had 207 yards on 33 plays. Fairhope opened the second half with two impressive drives to extend the lead to 38-22. But the Lions scored 17 unanswered points in the final 10:06 to rally for the win. After closing to withing 38-36 with 7:02 remaining, Thompson made a leaping interception on a deep pass to set up the winning drive for the Lions. Foley drove 69 yards in 10 plays, chewing up 4:26 off the clock before Owens delivered the game-winning kick. Foley improves to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Class 7A, Region 1 play. Fairhope suffered its first loss after opening the season with five wins. The Pirates are also 2-1 in Region 1. Coachspeak: “Our kids played hard. We didn’t take them for granted. They (the Lions) have been sitting there waiting to put together a complete game. And they did that tonight.” – Fairhope coach Tim Carter Star of the game: Owens delivered the first game-winning kick of his career. “I knew I was going to make it even before I kicked it. I just knew it,” Owens said. By the numbers: Both teams ran 66 offensive plays. Fairhope had 374 total yards – 249 yards rushing and 125 passing; Foley had 342 yards – 197 rushing and 145 passing. Star watch: Thompson, the Foley junior who is already committed to Alabama, had an unusual statistical night. He caught 11 passes, including touchdown grabs of 6 and 13 yards. But he finished with only 47 receiving yards. He added to crucial late interception. Storied rivalry: The Foley-Fairhope rivalry is one of the most storied in the state. Foley leads the all-time series 54-42-4. What’s next?: Fairhope will go on the road for its annual rivalry with Daphne. Foley will visit Alma Bryant. Opelika Vs. Auburn Football Live Stream: How To Watch, Get Live Score Updates Online https://digitalalabamanews.com/opelika-vs-auburn-football-live-stream-how-to-watch-get-live-score-updates-online/ With no Power 25 matchups on the slate for Week 7, the biggest games of the week are in-state matchups, and possibly No. 1 on that list features unbeaten Auburn taking on fellow Class 7A Region 2 foe Opelika.   These two teams have the best records in their Region, and both have their sights set on competing for Alabama’s Class 7A state title this season.  This is a high-stakes game for both sides, and one you don’t want to miss. Thankfully, you don’t have to. You can watch the Opelika vs. Auburn live stream on the NFHS Network.  HOW TO WATCH What: The Opelika Bulldogs take on the Auburn Tigers in one this week’s best matchups. When: 5:00 p.m. PT/8:00 p.m. ET on Friday, September 30 Where: Auburn High School | Auburn, Alabama How to watch live stream online: You can watch this game live on the NFHS Network. Live score updates: Follow the game on SBLive Sports for live score updates More coverage: SBLive Sports features in-depth coverage of Alabama high school football, including season previews, team rankings, top player lists and much more. Follow your favorite teams on SBLive’s live high school football scoreboard and download the SBLive Sports App. Auburn (6-0) is the only remaining undefeated team in Class 7A Region 2, and the Tigers have yet to allow more than 21 points in a game this year (which they have only done twice). They have outscored opponents 227-77 through their first six games.  Their hot start has them on the bubble in this week’s Power 25, and a win over Opelika might just move them into the national rankings on top of cementing the Tigers as the best team currently in Alabama.  If Auburn can pull that off, it would be the first time the Tigers have entered the Power 25 this season, and just the second time a team from Alabama cracked the Power 25 in 2022.  Opelika (4-2) started the season with four straight wins, but suffered back-to-back tough losses to Prattville and Theodore by a combined 13 points.  The Bulldogs have had three games decided by a field goal this year, and their experience in close games could come in handy if they can keep Auburn within striking distance.  An upset over Auburn would crush the Tigers hopes of jumping into the Power 25, and establish Opelika as a true threat in Alabama’s Class 7A.  With a lot on the line for both teams, this is a game you want to catch live.  Watch the Opelika vs. Auburn live stream on the NFHS Network.  Read More…

Bill Maher Defends Biden From Complaints Of His Age Following 'Where's Jackie?' Gaffe https://digitalalabamanews.com/bill-maher-defends-biden-from-complaints-of-his-age-following-wheres-jackie-gaffe/ “Real Time” host Bill Maher went to bat for President Biden following his latest gaffe involving him calling out for a deceased congresswoman at a White House event this week.  At Wednesday’s Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, Biden seemingly searched the crowd for Rep. Jackie Walorski, R-Ind. “Jackie, are you here? Where’s Jackie? She must not be here,” Biden looked around before continuing his speech. Walorski died in a car accident in early August along with two staffers, which Biden himself acknowledged in a statement released after her passing. She had been a legislative champion of a bipartisan bill that tackles nutrition and hunger. A video tribute honoring her memory played at the event. BILL MAHER SUGGESTS BIDEN BUMPS KAMALA HARRIS FROM DEM TICKET IN 2024: ‘I JUST THINK SHE’S A BAD POLITICIAN’ US President Joe Biden speaks at the White House Conference On Hunger, Nutrition And Health in Washington, DC, US, on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022. (Yuri Gripas/Sipa/Bloomberg via Getty Images) During Friday’s monologue, Maher said Republicans “lost their s—” over the gaffe, “the kind he’s made for 50 years.” “There’s 535 members of Congress, OK?… I’m not saying it was a great moment. Again, 535 members. He forgot she was dead. The last guy forgot we were a democracy! Can we have a little perspective?” Maher excused Biden before railing former President Donald Trump for one of his memorable gaffes.  ‘WHERE’S JACKIE?’ BIDEN’S LATEST GAFFE IGNORED ON-AIR BY CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC Later during the panel discussion, Maher clashed with one of his guests, The Atlantic staff writer Caitlin Flanagan, who suggested Biden shouldn’t seek re-election in 2024 because he’s “super old.” “There’s nothing wrong with being old, there’s no shame to it… but there are natural processes that happen and it certainly seems like he’s losing his acuity, which a lot of older men do,” Flanagan said.  “I’m so disappointed that you, like me, not so young, would say this. It’s such bulls—,” Maher reacted.  “Real Time” host Bill Maher pushed back at the notion that President Biden is too old to seek reelection, calling the argument “bulls—.” (HBO) “First of all, the same week that he did this, Kamala Harris was over in Korea saying ‘our longtime ally North Korea,’” Maher continued.  “Again, the bar is low,” Flanagan stressed. “But I’m just saying that he is — nobody is wrong to say — “ “He’s the same guy. He was always a gaffe machine,” Maher pushed back. “He’s actually more disciplined than he used to be.” BILL MAHER TORN ON BIDEN’S ANTI-MAGA SPEECH: I LIKE THAT HE GAVE IT, ‘BUT THE WAY HE DID IT? NOT GOOD’ CNN contributor Van Jones chimed in, saying, “When Biden’s strong, he’s very strong. And when he’s weak, he’s very weak,” which is “what people are responding to.” “If the public in 2024 sees what they perceive to be a weak insider versus a scary outsider, a Trump or a DeSantis — that’s a perception… I do think that people have a reason to be concerned if he continues to be perceived to be weak, but the reality is, what’s the alternative to Biden?” Jones asked.  U.S. President Joe Biden looks out at attendees as he speaks at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health in Washington, U.S., September 28, 2022.  (REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque) “You don’t see, at all, any concerns at all?” Flanagan asked.  “Concerned? Compared to what?” Maher shot back. “Would I like to have great wisdom in the body of a 20-year-old? Yes, everybody would, but that’s not life. And it doesn’t matter.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP “I admit he is going to have trouble in the debates, debates are gonna look bad. Prepare for it now. There’s gonna be some senior moments. He could show up without pants… But it doesn’t matter. It has nothing to do with running the country. You run the country behind the scenes. It’s all show. It’s all bulls—,” Maher added. Joseph A. Bolsonaro Or Lula? As Brazil Prepares To Vote Here's What To Know KVIA
Bolsonaro Or Lula? As Brazil Prepares To Vote Here's What To Know KVIA
Bolsonaro Or Lula? As Brazil Prepares To Vote, Here's What To Know – KVIA https://digitalalabamanews.com/bolsonaro-or-lula-as-brazil-prepares-to-vote-heres-what-to-know-kvia/ By Camilo Rocha As election day approaches in Brazil, the two leading presidential candidates — former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and current leader Jair Bolsonaro — have stepped up efforts to woo voters. But this is an arduous task in a country where 85% of voters say they have already made up their minds, according to a Datafolha poll released Thursday. For Lula, more votes could mean victory in the first round of voting, with no need for a runoff. Meanwhile, Bolsonaro needs to catch up, as he slips 14 points behind his rival, according to the same survey. When is Brazil’s election? Brazilians will vote for their next president on Sunday, Oct. 2, in the first round of the elections. On the same date, governors, senators, federal and state deputies for the country’s 26 states plus the federal district will also be chosen. Voting is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. in Brasilia (7 a.m. ET) and concludes at 5 p.m. local (4 p.m. ET). In the Brazilian electoral system, a winning candidate must gain more than 50% fo the vote. If no candidate crosses that threshold, a second round of voting will be organized, in which the options will be narrowed down to the two frontrunners from the first round. In Brazil, opinion polls always estimate candidates’ potential performance in the first round (competing against with all other candidates) and in the second round (with just two top candidates). Over 156 million Brazilians are eligible to vote. Who are the candidates? Bolsonaro and da Silva — more commonly referred to as Lula — are by far the candidates to watch. Though other candidates are also in the race, they’re polling with one-digit percentages and are unlikely to pose much competition. Lula, 76, was Brazil’s President for two terms, from 2003 to 2006 and 2007 to 2011). A household name, he first came into the political scene in the 1970s as a leader of worker strikes which defied the military regime. In 1980, he was one of the founders of the Workers’ Party (PT), which went on to become Brazil’s main lef-twing political force. Lula’s presidential terms were marked by programs aimed at reducing poverty and inequality in the country but also rocked by revelations of a corruption scheme involving the payment of congressional representatives to support government proposals. Due to lack of evidence of his involvement, Lula himself was never included in the investigation of this scheme. Lula’s campaign for the presidency now promises a new tax regime that will allow for higher public spending. He has vowed to end hunger in the country, which has returned during the Bolsonaro government. Lula also promises to work to reduce carbon emissions and deforestation in the Amazon. Bolsonaro is a former army captain who was a federal deputy for 27 years before running for President in 2018. A marginal figure in politics during much of this time, he emerged in the mid-2010s as a leading figure of a more radically right-wing movement, which perceived the PT as its main enemy. As a President, Bolsonaro has pursued a conservative agenda, supported by important evangelical leaders. His government also became known for its support for ruthless exploitation of land in the Amazon, leading to record deforestation figures. Environmentalists have warned that the future of the rainforest could be at stake in this election. In his program, Bolsonaro promises to increase mining, privatize public companies and generate more sustainable energy to bring down energy prices. He has vowed to continue paying a R$ 600 (roughly US$110) monthly benefit known as Auxilio Brasil. When will we know the results? Vote counting begins right after ballots (mostly electronic) close on Sunday. Brazil’s electoral authorities say they expect final results from the first round to be officially announced that evening, on Oct. 2. They will be published on the electoral court’s website. In the last few elections, results were officially declared two to three hours after voting finished. If the leading candidate does not manage to muster more than half of all valid votes, a second round will take place on October 30. Observers will be watching closely to see if all candidates accept the vote result publicly. Bolsonaro, who has been accused of firing up supporters with violent rhetoric, has sought to sow doubts about the result and said that the results should be considered suspicious if he doesn’t gain “at least 60%”. Both he and his conservative Liberal Party claimed that Brazil’s electronic ballot system is susceptible to fraud — an entirely unfounded allegation that has drawn comparisons to the false election claims of former US President Donald Trump. There have been no proven instances of voter fraud in the electronic ballot in Brazil. The Supreme Electoral Court has also rejected claims of flaws in the system, as “false and untruthful, with no base in reality”. The-CNN-Wire & © 2022 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. GREG GUTFELD: Could Trump And Obama Team Up Together Like 'Super Friends' To Solve Russia-Ukraine Crisis? https://digitalalabamanews.com/greg-gutfeld-could-trump-and-obama-team-up-together-like-super-friends-to-solve-russia-ukraine-crisis/ NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! I’m so excited, let me get my notes together. Oh, so many things. Happy Friday, my Friday, friends. But before I get to the monologue, I want to send our thoughts to those who are currently suffering, not him, I’m talking about people experiencing the wrath of Hurricane Ian, not hurricane Gutfeld, though what a mess I’ve left behind. Brian Williams. Oh, man, I’m taunting karma, aren’t I? Yeah, I am. I’ve been fired many times. Yeah, you got Brian Williams. You got Don Lemon. You got James Corden, Samantha Bee, and now Trevor. I’d say Seth Meyers is next, but I really like her work, she’s a keeper. Now, as for all of our friends down south, in all seriousness, dealing with the hurricane, our hearts are with you and especially with this guy. There he is. You know, if that doesn’t reflect the spirit of America, when times get tough, I don’t know what does. We’re with you Florida flag guy, wherever you ended up. R.I.P.  ‘GUTFELD!’ MAKES HISTORY, UNSEATS STEPHEN COLBERT AS NEW KING OF LATE-NIGHT TELEVISION So this week, former President Trump suggested that he could lead a team to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia. Yeah, someone finally mentioned peace. He did it on his own app, Truth Social, where he wrote, “U.S. leadership should remain cool, calm and dry on the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. This is a big event that should not entail a big solution. Do not make matters worse. Be strategic. Be smart. Brilliant.” He’s got it in parentheses. “Get a negotiated deal done now. Both sides need it and they want it. The entire world is at stake. I will head up group.” Three question marks after that, that means it’s real.  Vladimir Putin delivers an address flanked by men in military uniforms. (AP) (Pavel Bednyakov, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP) Of course, being Trump, he had to remind everybody that this war never would have happened under his watch. And we’ll never know if that’s true, of course, but we do know he can’t do worse than his bumbling successor, who only strikes fear in pre-teens with ponytails. Speaking of, let’s check in on him. VIDEO Not the right way to go. They did find him three hours later on an interstate clutching a teddy bear. Now, this wasn’t the first time Trump called for a peace and negotiated peace between Russia and Ukraine. In April, he said they should negotiate “now… not later,” when everyone will be dead. Exclamation point. And as you know, it’s hard to talk to dead people, as hard as Biden tries. VIDEO Yeah, that’s normal. But despite having no diplomatic experience, Trump understood a war’s most lamentable variable, duration. The longer it goes, the worse it gets in terms of loss of human life and loss of treasure. And so he said this. TRUMP: RUSSIA INVASION OF UKRAINE A CONSEQUENCE OF WORLD LEADERS ‘NO LONGER’ RESPECTING AMERICA PRESIDENT TRUMP 2019: I really hope that you and President Putin get together and can solve your problem. That would be a tremendous achievement. Look at Zelensky’s face, he does not want to hear that. But that was three years ago. Of course, no one wanted to take that seriously at the time because it’s Trump. So is this recent offer a crazy idea, a desperate idea, or a brilliant one? It could be all three. Like when I shaved Bill Hemmer’s back, I just left his initials. That could mean a lot of things. Abraham Accords signing ceremony at the White House on September 13, 2021. (Getty) Fact is, with Trump, his penchant for deal making makes him a better diplomat than most. You table the animosities and grudges in deals, and you ask both parties what they want to get out of this. Everyone needs an off ramp, including Putin, or else there isn’t an end, just mountains of dead. There’s no food or gas, and we’re one errant missile away from America joining World War III with a president who has cabbage for brains. So what do you think the biggest obstacle to world peace really is? Is it corruption? Sure. Authoritarianism? Maybe. Jesse Watters? Perhaps. But you’re close with that.  VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS COMMENDS US ALLIANCE WITH ‘REPUBLIC OF NORTH KOREA’ IN DMZ SPEECH GAFFE My guess it’s ego. A subject I’m an expert in, for it’s ego that keeps people in power from listening to those other people that they can’t stand who can help them. Maybe because they aren’t diplomats or they aren’t in your party or they’re Donald Trump. However, Trump’s provided the world with two huge successes and it’s not that The Apprentice or his signature ribeye steaks, which are delicious. You still have my address, right? You can send them there. First, North Korea, without any diplomatic experience, Trump obliterated the threat like they were Hillary Clinton’s dreams. He was laughed at, but he did it. And now what do we have in his place at the DMZ? KAMALA HARRIS: So the United States shares a very important relationship, which is an alliance with the Republic of North Korea, and it is an alliance that is strong and enduring. US Vice President Kamala Harris, right, looks towards the north side of the border at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). (SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg via Getty Images) It is, is there a 25th Amendment for the vice president or as she would call it banana fufu, carrot top. Then there’s the Abraham Accords, orchestrated by Trump’s son-in-law, who again had no experience in diplomacy, although having Trump as a father-in-law looks better than anything on Anthony Blinken’s resumé. But I’m starting to think diplomacy is like co-hosting “Fox & Friends,” anybody can do it. Idiots like Tony Blinken and John Kerry, they just make it look hard.  But the Trump administration brokered a deal between sworn enemies. If this were a Democrat White House, the staff would have Nobel Prizes coming out of their asses, which is less painful than going in, I’ve heard. So now you have Trump offering to help. And I’m sure that drew dismissive laughter from all the useless nothing-crats. But why should they be laughing? It’s not any funnier than Democrats believing men could get pregnant. PLANNED PARENTHOOD DOCTOR TELLS CONGRESS MEN CAN GET PREGNANT: ‘THIS IS MEDICINE’ REP. ANDREW CLYDE, R-GA: Dr. Kumar, can biological men become pregnant and give birth? DR. BHAVIK KUMAR: So men can have pregnancies, especially trans-men. REP. ANDREW CLYDE, R-GA: So are you saying that a biological female who identifies as a man and therefore becomes pregnant is, a “man”? DR. BHAVIK KUMAR: Somebody with a uterus may have a capability of becoming pregnant, whether they’re a woman or a man. That doesn’t mean. REP. ANDREW CLYDE, R-GA: Okay, we’re done. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, left, and U.S. President Donald Trump shake hands over the military demarcation line at the border village of Panmunjom in Demilitarized Zone. (Korean Central News Agency/Korea News Service via AP) I have a feeling America is almost at the point of saying, “yeah, we’re done.” At least what Trump is offering makes sense, and no wonder the Dems don’t like it, they never see that stuff. Right now, they have no way forward diplomatically in ending a war that we are paying for. Fact is, Trump might be the only person to pull this one off, but perhaps with the help of another guy. Yeah, that guy who also saw the folly in picking sides between these two countries. Now, could you imagine this? A peace team that feels exactly like a buddy cop movie? One unorthodox wild man, another a by the book bureaucrat, it’s like Lethal Weapon, 48 HRS., and Laverne & Shirley all rolled into one, that’s a brilliant idea. But in order for this to happen, Obama and others would have to lose their ego. It’s the same thing I tell Jesse Watters when he keeps spray-painting his bald spot.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Our leaders should ask themselves, would I be okay with real peace if Trump had a role? If you say no, then that’s your ego talking, and you value it more than human life, which sadly makes you another useless diplomat. Let’s go to Joy Behar for a comment. VIDEO It’s Friday and yeah, I’m going to be milking that one for a while. Friday Roundup: Northside T.R. Miller Earn Big Wins
Friday Roundup: Northside, T.R. Miller Earn Big Wins https://digitalalabamanews.com/friday-roundup-northside-t-r-miller-earn-big-wins/ Northside relied on its ball-control modified Wing-T offense to knock off previously unbeaten Corner 35-21 on the road Friday night. Senior quarterback Braden Green had 30 carries for 209 yards and two rushing touchdowns and lofted a 15-yard TD pass to Jaden Roberts as the eighth-ranked Rams improved to 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in Class 4A, Region 5. Brandon Musch's 7 TDs Lead Westminster Past DAR https://digitalalabamanews.com/brandon-muschs-7-tds-lead-westminster-past-dar/ High School Sports Published: Sep. 30, 2022, 11:20 p.m. Westminster Christian bounced back from a heartbreaking loss last week to defeat DAR 53-7 on the road tonight. Junior quarterback Brandon Musch compiled 491 total yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Wildcats (4-2, 3-1 Class 4A, Region 8), who regrouped following a 70-69 loss to Central-Florence. Westminster led 25-7 at the half behind Musch rushing touchdowns from 62, 15 and 39 yards out and a 38-yard TD pass to Kyle Everleth. The Patriots looked as if they would get back in the game on their first possession in the third quarter, moving the ball to the Wildcat 28-yard line, but Josh Pomnitz stepped in front of Trey Bolt’s pass over the middle and raced 72 yards for a touchdown and a 32-7 Westminster lead. DAR dropped to 1-6 and 0-4. Star of the game: Musch completed 17 of 23 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns. He had three TD tosses in the second half – 46 and 33 yards to Owen Lockette and 31 yards to Amos Baldwin. Musch finished with 210 yards rushing and three TDs on 12 carries. Play of the game: Pomnitz’s 72-yard pick 6 dashed any hopes of a Patriot comeback. Brady Largin scored DAR’s lone TD on a 1-yard run. By the numbers: 532 – Total yards for Westminster. They said it … : “I just looked at the quarterback and saw the ball into my hands and I just took off running and all the excitement just hit me when I got into the end zone. It was our first pick 6 and my first pick of the season and it just made the whole defense energy go up and it was just awesome.” – Pomnitz “The last two games were really tough for us as a team and I’m just proud of my guys that we didn’t lay down and let these two losses define the rest of our season. We had a great week of practice and just trusted out coaches to give us a great gameplan to help us be successful.” – Musch Coachspeak: “I’m just proud of these playing a complete game on both sides of the ball even with a few hiccups as we had a few guys out sick this week and a few injured that didn’t come back that we thought would. We have a lot of growth left to do, but I just love how these guys rebounded after two weeks of some pretty tough football that could have did us in for the season. They fought back and showed their resiliency.” – Westminster coach Louis LeBlanc What’s next? Westminster hosts Madison County next Thursday. Ian Arrives In North Carolina After Bringing Flooding, Damage To South Carolina; Death Toll Rises In Florida https://digitalalabamanews.com/ian-arrives-in-north-carolina-after-bringing-flooding-damage-to-south-carolina-death-toll-rises-in-florida/   11:43 PM Ian pounds South Carolina; washes away piers and floods streets Rain from Hurricane Ian floods a street on Sept. 30, 2022, in Charleston, South Carolina.  Getty Images Ian slammed coastal South Carolina as a hurricane on Friday, ripping apart piers and flooding streets after the ferocious storm caused catastrophic damage in Florida. As Ian moved across South Carolina on its way to North Carolina Friday evening, it dropped from a hurricane to a post-tropical cyclone. While Ian’s center came ashore near Georgetown, South Carolina, on Friday with much weaker winds than when it crossed Florida’s Gulf Coast earlier in the week, the storm left many areas of Charleston’s downtown peninsula under water. It also washed away parts of four piers along the coast, including two at Myrtle Beach. Online cameras showed seawater filling neighborhoods in Garden City to calf level. After the heaviest of the rainfall blew through Charleston, Will Shalosky examined a large elm tree in front of his house that had fallen across his downtown street. He noted the damage could have been much worse. “If this tree has fallen a different way, it would be in our house,” Shalosky said. “It’s pretty scary, pretty jarring.” Ian’s heavy rains and winds crossed into North Carolina on Friday evening. Gov. Roy Cooper warned residents to be vigilant, given that up to 8 inches of rain could fall in some areas. “Hurricane Ian is at our door. Expect drenching rain and sustained heavy winds over most of our state,” Cooper said. “Our message today is simple: Be smart and be safe.”   10:16 PM Florida’s DeSantis warns against looting amid hurricane recovery: “We’re a Second Amendment state” In a press conference addressing Hurricane Ian damage and recovery efforts, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Friday expressed concern over looting and robberies in impacted areas. “The other thing we’re concerned about, particularly in those areas that were really hard hit, is we want to make sure we’re maintaining law and order,” DeSantis said. “You can have people bringing boats into some of these islands and trying to ransack people’s homes.” The governor warned the community against looting, implying that law enforcement would be watching for it. He also referenced the Second Amendment. “Don’t even think about looting. Don’t even think about taking advantage of people in this vulnerable situation,”  DeSantis said. “I can tell you, in the state of Florida, you never know what may be lurking behind somebody’s home. And I would not want to chance that, if I were you, given that we’re a Second Amendment state.” DeSantis said that law enforcement was monitoring potential robberies. He also offered local jurisdictions state assistance in controlling crime, if necessary. Lee County, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, includes the cities of Fort Myers and Cape Coral, both of which were hard hit by the hurricane. Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno warned against looting in a press conference Thursday, threatening jail time.  “Don’t do it in this county. Don’t make that mistake,” Marceno said. “Because one thing we do have is vacancy at the jail. And I guarantee you if you try to prey on one of our great residents, you will find yourself in that jail.”   7:47 PM / September 30, 2022 Ian knocks out power in Carolinas, Virginia More than 60,000 residents are without power in Virginia as Ian moves further north, poweroutage.us reported Friday night. To the south, over 270,000 people in North Carolina and 164,000 in South Carolina are in the dark. Meanwhile, 1.5 million people still do not have power in Florida, several days after Ian swept across the peninsula.   7:25 PM / September 30, 2022 Ports in Tampa Bay, Canaveral reopening The ports of Tampa Bay and Canaveral both reopened on Friday, two days after Hurricane Ian forced them to close. In Tampa Bay, cargo ships are moving in and out of the port. However, cruises have not yet resumed — the first will be the Carnival Paradise, which is scheduled to arrive on Saturday. Across the peninsula, in Canaveral, vessels weighing 500 gross tons and less were welcomed back beginning at 4 p.m. The port said it would reopen to all traffic beginning at midnight.   6:46 PM / September 30, 2022 “We’ve never seen anything like this”: Severe floods swamp Orlando Many houses and apartment complexes in Orlando, Florida, are still completely surrounded by water. Lidianys de Dios stayed up all night as hurricane Ian hit, watching the rising water creep up to her front door, knowing that she has no flood insurance. She said she’s never had flooding like this in her neighborhood. “We’ve been in this house for like 16 years and then in the country for like 20-something years and we’ve never seen anything like this before,” she said. Across Orlando, airboats made their way through flooded neighborhoods all day Friday, rescuing residents who had no way out. Some braved the flooded streets by car, others used kayaks to get around. “This is definitely the worst hurricane I’ve been through,” said Orlando resident Juan Ceballos, who was evacuated by the National Guard. “We just packed like a quick tub full of stuff and walked out.” Harrowing rescues after severe floods swamp Orlando 02:03   6:27 PM / September 30, 2022 U.S. Army shares video of rescue mission in Sanibel Soldiers with the Florida National Guard flew to Sanibel Island to “assist with medical evacuations and search and rescue operations,” the U.S. Army tweeted Friday. A total of 27 people were on the boat when it took on water off Stock Island on Wednesday, the Coast Guard said. Four people, identified by authorities as Cuban migrants, made it to shore in the immediate aftermath.  The Coast Guard said the next day that three people were located 2 miles off Boca Chica and taken to area hospitals for exhaustion and dehydration. Later that same day, the Coast Guard said nine people had been safely located and rescued. The boat sank as Hurricane Ian approached Florida’s west coast, bringing storm surges, roaring wind and punishing rain to much of the state. It comes after the Glazer family, who owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, announced they were donating $1 million Thursday. The foundation will also auction off “a limited number of game-worn jerseys and other unique items” from this weekend’s Tampa Bay-Kansas City game to benefit the American Red Cross’ hurricane relief efforts. Fans will be able to bid on the items at NFL.com/auction. “The NFL family’s thoughts are with the various communities affected by Hurricane Ian during this difficult time and we will continue to find additional ways to provide help and support to those in Florida who need it now and in the months ahead,” the foundation said in a statement.   4:11 PM / September 30, 2022 Hundreds of thousands without power in Florida and Carolinas As of 3:45 p.m. ET on Friday, more than 1.7 million customers in Florida, 210,000 in South Carolina and 82,000 in North Carolina were without power, according to poweroutage.us.   4:02 PM / September 30, 2022 Florida sheriff’s office shares photos of devastation The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was surveying damage Friday on Pine Island and Matlacha, two islands located very close to where Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida. Officials shared stunning photos of the destruction left there: a buckled road, flooded streets, a trapped car, a leveled home and downed palm trees. “The devastation is heartbreaking,” a Facebook post said. The president reiterated that the federal government will handle 100% of the cost to clear debris in Florida’s hardest-hit counties.  “We’re just beginning to see the scale of that destruction,” Mr. Biden said. “It’s likely to rank among the worst … in the nation’s history. You’ve all seen on television homes and property wiped out. It’s going to take months, years to rebuild. And our hearts go...

US Justice Dept Seeks Expedited Ruling In Trump Special Master Case
US Justice Dept Seeks Expedited Ruling In Trump Special Master Case https://digitalalabamanews.com/us-justice-dept-seeks-expedited-ruling-in-trump-special-master-case-2/ The US Justice Department on Friday moved to expedite its appeal of an order appointing a special master to review all of the records the FBI seized from former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate. In a court filing late on Friday, the Justice Department said its inability to access the non-classified documents held at Trump’s estate is still hampering significant aspects of its investigation on the retention of government records at the Florida property that pertain to the classified records. For all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app. The Justice Department is asking the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to order all papers be filed in the case by Nov. 11, and hold any necessary hearing in the case as soon as that briefing is completed. Trump’s lawyers are opposing the request, the government said. The former president’s attorneys did not immediately return a request for comment. The Justice Department said an expedited schedule may allow the government, if it wins the appeal, “to more quickly resume its full investigation without restraints on its review and use of evidence seized pursuant to a lawful search warrant.” The government attorneys added that, if the Atlanta-based appeals court rules in the Justice Department’s favor, it would end the litigation over materials seized in the search as well as the outside review of those documents. That review, being conducted by special master Senior U.S. District Judge Raymond Dearie, is currently set to end by Dec. 16. The appeals court earlier this month sided with the Justice Department in lifting parts of the ruling from U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon that had prevented the department from relying on classified materials taken in the search as part of its investigation, such as bringing up the sensitive records’ contents in witness interviews or presenting charges to a grand jury. The 11th Circuit also blocked Dearie from accessing the classified records as part of his proceedings. Cannon on Sept. 5 granted Trump’s request for that third-party review of the seized documents, over the objections of the Justice Department. That process has already been delayed, as Trump and the government have not yet been able to secure a contract with an outside vendor to host the documents as part of the review. Cannon on Thursday also rejected Dearie’s instruction that Trump verify the list of documents taken from the property, after the former president’s lawyers argued that requirement was outside the scope of the special master’s authority. Trump has claimed without evidence that FBI agents planted evidence as they searched his resort on Aug. 8, but his attorneys have not repeated the same allegations in court. Why DOJ Wants A Faster Ruling In Appeal Of Trump Special Master Review
Why DOJ Wants A Faster Ruling In Appeal Of Trump Special Master Review
Why DOJ Wants A Faster Ruling In Appeal Of Trump Special Master Review https://digitalalabamanews.com/why-doj-wants-a-faster-ruling-in-appeal-of-trump-special-master-review/ The Department of Justice filed a request to expedite its appeal of a judge’s order to allow a special master to review classified documents taken from former President Donald Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago residency. The request, filed on Friday to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, proposed an expedited schedule that would wrap up the written briefs by November 11 instead of the current deadline scheduled for a month later. The DOJ said that the independent special master review has hampered the department’s own criminal investigation of the documents seized from the former president’s Florida residence in August. “An expedited appeal would serve the interests of justice,” read the filing. “Based on the district court’s orders thus far, the government is barred from accessing all of the materials except those with classification markings recovered in August pursuant to a lawful search warrant—and it may continue to be barred from doing so until mid-December or later.” Former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate is seen on September 14, 2022, in Palm Beach, Florida. The Department of Justice filed a request on September 30 to expedite its appeal of having a special master review documents that were seized in August from Mar-a-Lago. Joe Raedle/Getty Images The DOJ was granted an appeal from the court earlier in September for more than 100 documents marked as classified to be exempted from the special master review. Expediting the appeal of the broader review—and winning the appeal—would give the DOJ access to all 11,000 documents as part of its investigation into how they were transferred, stored and who has accessed them. Legal experts took to Twitter in light of the news to explain why the DOJ would be motivated to speed up the appeal process, and weighed in on why they think the department’s arguments might be granted by the court. Former appellate defender Teri Kanefield posted a thread to Twitter explaining why she believes the circuit court would be inclined to grant the request. Among Kanefield’s arguments she noted that the court already gave a “shellacking” to Judge Aileen Cannon by blocking the special master review of specific classified documents. The DOJ is moving to expedite the appeal. (Their answer to Judge Cannon’s shenanigans.) Procedural history: First they filed a notice of appeal, then asked for a stay pending the appeal of the 100 documents marked classified. . .https://t.co/XX293Gt5j2 h/t @kyledcheney 1/ — Teri Kanefield (@Teri_Kanefield) September 30, 2022 The DOJ references in Friday’s filing that the court had granted its order earlier in the month on the basis that the “injunction against the government’s review” posed “real and significant harm on the United States and the public.” “Even if not to the same degree,” continued the DOJ, “such harm persists with respect to the district court’s injunction against the government’s review and use of thousands of remaining documents and other material….” The DOJ also argued in its filing that there is “good cause” to expedite the appeal, including that the request does not ask the court to “analyze an extensive factual record.” “Instead, this appeal presents two questions of law,” wrote the DOJ. “Whether the district court erred by exercising equitable jurisdiction over [Trump’s] motion, and whether the district court erred by granting a preliminary injunction barring the government from reviewing or using evidence seized… in an ongoing criminal investigation.” Kanefield added that if the DOJ is granted its request to expedite the process and goes on to win the appeal, “It was all a waste of Trump’s money and the DOJ’s time.” Former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti also weighed in on Twitter, saying that he believes Judge Cannon’s recent decision to side with Trump in an argument between the former president and the special master played a role in the DOJ’s decision to request an expedited appeal. Cannon’s recent order certainly played a role in DOJ’s decision to request an expedited appeal. We don’t know how the appellate court will decide the broader issues raised by DOJ. But its decision on the motion to stay is a good sign, and DOJ is right to prefer them to Cannon. https://t.co/vBmAZrjatL — Renato Mariotti (@renato_mariotti) October 1, 2022 Mariotti added that it’s hard to say if the appeals court will grant the request from the DOJ, but that the department’s decision on the motion is “a good sign, and the DOJ is right to prefer them to Cannon.” The DOJ noted in its request that it had conferred with Trump’s lawyer, Chris Kise, who said that Trump is opposed to the motion to expedite the process. “It will be interesting to see what reasons Trump comes up with for needing more time, particularly because the DOJ is truncating its own timeframe,” Kanefield noted on Twitter. On his Truth Social account Friday, the former president referred to the “Document Hoax Lawsuit” as another “scam” from the DOJ and the FBI. “Much like Russia, Russia, Russia, Impeachment hoax #1, Impeachment hoax #2, the Mueller Report, spying on my campaign, lying to the FISA Court, lying to Congress, illegally breaking into my home in Florida in violation of the Fourth Amendment and also violating the Presidential Records Act,” Trump said in the post. Trump Intensifies Attacks On McConnell With 'death Wish' Remark On His Social Media Platform https://digitalalabamanews.com/trump-intensifies-attacks-on-mcconnell-with-death-wish-remark-on-his-social-media-platform/ Former President Donald Trump raised the specter of political violence Friday with a fresh attack on Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, suggesting that the GOP leader had “a death wish” because he had voted to approve legislation sponsored by Democrats. In a post on his Truth Social website, Trump asked if McConnell had supported the unspecified bills “because he hates Donald J. Trump, and he knows I am opposed to them.” “He has a DEATH WISH,” Trump added. While Trump did not specify which Democratic-sponsored bills McConnell supported, the Senate on Thursday passed a bill to keep the government funded in a 72-25 vote that included support from McConnell and other Republicans. Earlier in the week, McConnell said he would back a bipartisan legislation aimed at protecting against election subversion — putting him at loggerheads with Trump. When asked about Trump’s comments on Friday, Trump spokesperson Taylor Budowich said it was “absurd” to suggest the former president’s post could be construed as dangerous. “Mitch McConnell is killing the Republican Party through weakness and cowardice. He obviously has a political death wish for himself and Republican Party, but President Trump and the America First champions in Congress will save the Republican Party and our nation,” Budowich said in a email to NBC News. Trump has frequently lambasted McConnell, with the attacks intensifying after the Senate Republican leader rebuked Trump following the Capitol riot. More recent attacks have included derogatory comments about McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who served as transportation secretary during the Trump administration. On Truth Social last month, Trump called Chao “crazy,” while referring to McConnell as a “broken down hack politician.” Chao resigned a day after the attack on the Capitol, when a pro-Trump mob chanted “hang Mike Pence” while storming the building. She later sat for a videotaped interview with the House Jan. 6 committee. On Friday, Trump said McConnell must “immediately seek help and advise from his China loving wife, Coco Chow!” Chao was born in Taipei. NBC News has reached out to McConnell’s office for comment. SEC Football By The Numbers: Top 10 For Week 5
SEC Football By The Numbers: Top 10 For Week 5
SEC Football By The Numbers: Top 10 For Week 5 https://digitalalabamanews.com/sec-football-by-the-numbers-top-10-for-week-5/ The fifth week of the SEC’s 90th season features five conference and two non-conference contests, with Tennessee and Vanderbilt on open dates. To avoid Hurricane Ian, South Carolina moved its Saturday game to Thursday and defeated South Carolina State 50-10. Here are 10 numbers, along with the schedule, TV times and betting lines, to get ready for the SEC’s fifth week of 2022: 1 Previous Kentucky-Ole Miss game has featured two ranked teams. On Sept. 27, 1958, No. 9 Ole Miss defeated No. 17 Kentucky 27-6 in Memphis. The teams have squared off 29 times since that contest. On Saturday, No. 7 Kentucky visits No. 14 Ole Miss on Saturday. 1 TD run in each of Georgia’s games this season for QB Stetson Bennett. He also has thrown for at least 272 yards in each contest, making him the first SEC player with at least 250 passing yards and one TD run in four consecutive games since Florida QB Tim Tebow in the final four contests of the 2007 season. Against Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Florida Atlantic and Florida State, Tebow completed 88-of-121 passes for 1,185 yards with 11 TDs and three interceptions and ran for 275 yards and 10 TDs on 56 carries. In Georgia’s victories over Oregon, Samford, South Carolina and Kent State, Bennett has completed 92-of-124 passes for 1,224 yards with five TDs and one interception and run for 44 yards and four TDs on 13 carries. 4 200-yard rushing games apiece for Arkansas and Ole Miss in 2022. They are the only SEC teams that have surpassed 200 yards on the ground in every game this season. On Saturday, the Razorbacks play Alabama, which most recently allowed an opposing team to rush for 200 yards on Sept. 18, 2021, in a 31-29 victory over Florida – 16 games ago. On Saturday, the Rebels play Kentucky, which most recently allowed an opposing team to rush for 200 yards on Dec. 5, 2020, in a 41-18 victory over South Carolina – 18 games ago. 5 Of the six LSU coaches in the SEC era who faced Auburn in their first full seasons won that game. The lone loss was suffered by Nick Saban in a 34-17 setback on Sept. 16, 2000. Brian Kelly will face Auburn for the first time as LSU’s coach on Saturday. Seven of LSU’s full-time coaches in the SEC era did not face Auburn in their first seasons, and three never led an LSU team against Auburn. 6 Consecutive Alabama-Arkansas games have featured at least 40 points for the Crimson Tide. Alabama has scored at least 40 points in six straight games against only one other SEC rival – the past six meetings with Ole Miss. In its past six meetings with the Razorbacks, Alabama won 49-30 in 2016, 41-9 in 2017, 65-31 in 2018, 48-7 in 2019, 52-3 in 2020 and 42-35 in 2021. The Tide visits Arkansas on Saturday. SEC FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS: TOP 10 FROM WEEK 4 14 Consecutive losses for Kentucky when playing an SEC West team on the road. The Wildcats haven’t won on an SEC West rival’s home field since Oct. 17, 2009, when Kentucky defeated Auburn 21-14 Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Wildcats visit Ole Miss on Saturday. 14 Of the past 15 Auburn-LSU games have been won by the team that gained the most yards. The exception came in 2017, when both teams finished with 354 yards in LSU’s 27-23 victory. The most recent Auburn-LSU game in which the losing team finished with more yards than the winning team came in 2006, when Auburn won 7-3 even though LSU held a 311-182 advantage in yardage. Entering their Saturday matchup, LSU is averaging gaining 487 yards per game and Auburn is averaging gaining 377 yards per game. 18 Consecutive games have featured at least 20 points for the Bulldogs, tied for the longest such streak in school history. Since Georgia defeated Clemson 10-3 to kick off the 2021 season, the Bulldogs haven’t scored fewer than 24 points in any game. Georgia also had an 18-game streak with at least 20 points in each across the 2012 and 2013 seasons, which was ended by a 24-19 loss to Nebraska in the Gator Bowl. Georgia’s opponent on Saturday, Missouri, has held each of its past two opponents to fewer than 20 points. The SEC record for consecutive games scoring at least 20 points is 40 by Alabama, a streak that ended in the Crimson Tide’s 33-18 loss to Georgia in the CFP national championship game on Jan. 10, 2022. 24 Years since Auburn had a three-game stretch without scoring at least 20 points in any of them. The Tigers enter Saturday’s game against LSU having lost to Penn State 41-12 and beaten Missouri 17-14 in overtime in their previous two outings. It was the first time that Auburn had back-to-back games of fewer than 20 points since losing to Texas A&M 29-16 and beating LSU 18-13 in September 2016. The Tigers closed the 1998 season by beating Central Florida 10-6 and losing to Georgia 28-17 and Alabama 31-17 for their most recent three-game streak without reaching 20 points. Auburn has failed to reach 20 points in six of their 17 games under coach Bryan Harsin and own a 1-5 record in those contests, with last week’s game against Missouri the lone win. 45 Years since Kentucky had a winning streak longer than the Wildcats’ current eight-game run. The current winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest in school history and dates from a 45-42 loss to Tennessee on Nov. 6. In 1977, Kentucky won nine consecutive games. The Wildcats had a 12-game winning streak during the 1909 and 1910 seasons, a 10-game streak in 1950 and a nine-game streak during the 1898 and 1899 seasons. Saturday, 01 Oct 2022 9:41 AM MYT WASHINGTON, Oct 1 ― The US Justice Department yesterday moved to expedite its appeal of an order appointing a special master to review records the FBI seized from former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate. In a court filing late yesterday, the Justice Department said its inability to access the non-classified documents is still hampering significant aspects of its investigation on the retention of government records at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. The Justice Department is asking the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to order all papers be filed in the case by November 11, and hold any necessary hearing in the case as soon as that briefing is completed. Trump’s lawyers oppose the request, the government said. Trump spokesperson Taylor Budowich said in an email: “After having weeks to prepare their arguments, the DOJ is now picking an unnecessary fight over a nine day difference in filing timelines.” The Justice Department said that because it is currently barred from accessing the roughly 11,000 non-classified documents seized in the search, it cannot examine documents that were stored alongside the classified materials. The government said those non-classified records “may shed light” on how the documents were transferred to or stored at the Mar-a-Lago estate, and who might have accessed them. The records might also serve as evidence of violations of federal statutes on obstruction and the concealment or removal of government records, according to yesterday’s filing. The Justice Department said an expedited schedule may allow the government, if it wins the appeal, “to more quickly resume its full investigation without restraints on its review and use of evidence seized pursuant to a lawful search warrant.” The government attorneys added that, if the Atlanta-based appeals court rules in the Justice Department’s favour, it would end the litigation over materials seized in the search as well as the outside review of those documents. That review, being conducted by special master Senior US District Judge Raymond Dearie, is currently set to end by December 16. The appeals court this month sided with the Justice Department in lifting parts of the ruling from US District Judge Aileen Cannon that had prevented the department from relying on classified materials taken in the search as part of its investigation, such as bringing up the sensitive records’ contents in witness interviews or presenting charges to a grand jury. The 11th Circuit also blocked Dearie from accessing the classified records as part of his proceedings. Cannon on September 5 granted Trump’s request for that third-party review of the seized documents, over the objections of the Justice Department. ― Reuters Read More…

Arizona GOP Chair: DOJ Has Not Attempted To Enforce False-Elector Subpoenas https://digitalalabamanews.com/arizona-gop-chair-doj-has-not-attempted-to-enforce-false-elector-subpoenas/ The batch of subpoenas was one of the earliest public signs of DOJ’s rapidly unfolding criminal investigation related to Trump’s effort to remain in power despite his defeat. The wave of subpoenas also coincided with the public hearings held by the Jan. 6 select committee, which highlighted the effort by Trump to assemble false presidential electors to provoke a controversy intended to overturn the election on Jan. 6, 2021. It’s unclear if DOJ has taken steps to enforce subpoenas issued to false electors in states other than Arizona. It’s also unclear how the false Arizona electors lodged the objections to the grand jury subpoenas that Ward described in her filing, however, the grand jury probe is overseen by Washington, D.C.‘s chief federal district court judge Beryl Howell, who has been adjudicating closed-door disputes throughout the investigation. Ward, one of 11 false electors for Trump in Arizona, has also been locked in a legal battle since February against the Jan. 6 select committee, which subpoenaed T-Mobile for her phone records as part of its expansive probe. Ward’s description of the status of the grand jury subpoenas came in filings connected to her appeal of a federal judge’s ruling granting the select committee access to her phone logs. U.S. District Court Judge Diane Humetewa ruled last week that Ward could not block the select committee from accessing her phone logs from T-Mobile. Ward quickly appealed the decision to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. As part of her appeal, Ward submitted an update on the status of the grand jury subpoenas. Two attorneys for Ward, and a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., did not respond to requests for comment. Ward contends that the select committee’s bid for her phone records is a political effort to punish a close ally of Trump. But the select committee has said it requires them as part of an effort to piece together contacts between key figures during the chaotic weeks that preceded the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Eifert and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell. The press conference will be streamed at thefloridachannel.org. Richard Tribou More than 2 million homes and businesses in the state remain without power as of 7:30 a.m. Friday, according to poweroutage.us. More than 2.6 million had been out on Thursday with the hardest hit counties in Southwest Florida still reeling. “Lee and Charlotte are basically off the grid at this point,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said noting power restoration will take time. “Charlotte and Lee reconnects are really going to likely have to be rebuilding of that infrastructure.” The state has 42,000 linemen responding to the power outages. Richard Tribou Passenger flights at OIA will resume Friday afternoon | 9:45 p.m. Greater Orlando Aviation Authority’s CEO Kevin Thibault said the Orlando International Airport will resume passenger flights Friday afternoon after an assessment of the property found little to minor damage. GOAA ceased commercial operations on Wednesday out of an abundance of caution pending the arrival of Hurricane Ian. Thibault said airport crew members inspected the area and are working to remove water buildup in order to resume operations by tomorrow afternoon. They inspected the airfield, airside property, gate and terminal links (trams), landside facilities and roads to ensure safe passage for buses and cars, an announcement said. Travelers are being advised to arrive at the airport for their departure after 10 a.m. to give enough time for airport workers and partners to prepare. Those wishing to adjust their flight should check with their individual airlines and rental car companies as many are adjusting their schedules and adding relief flights over the weekend. Amanda Rabines Disney, the first to announce its reopening plan around 2:45 p.m. Thursday, also unveiled its reopening times for Friday. At Magic Kingdom, early entry time is at 8 a.m. with general admission at 10 a.m. Early opening time at Epcot is at 9 a.m. with the park opening to all guests at 11 a.m. Early entry times at Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom are at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively, with general admission open two hours later. Reservations are needed. Disney Springs will be open from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. First responders have conducted about 700 confirmed rescues of people put in peril by Hurricane Ian, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday evening. The majority of those rescues were done in areas hit hardest by the storm including Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island. The rescues were conducted by air, sea and via high water vehicles, DeSantis said. Still, DeSantis said he expected more deaths from the storm. He declined to give a number of deaths so far, saying the figure was still being tallied. Unofficially, at least 11 deaths have been reported. Emergency management chief Kevin Guthrie said further deaths can be avoided if residents steer clear of power lines and using equipment such as chainsaws if they don’t know how to use them. David Harris The barricaded perimeter around Cranes Roost Park in Altamonte Springs wasn’t the only thing stopping curious neighbors from entering after Hurricane Ian dropped a massive amount of rain over Central Florida Wednesday evening. The lake was overflowing by Thursday covering most of the park and its paved one-mile-long walkway with a layer of floodwater that stretched all the way to the corner entrance on East Central Parkway and Festival Drive. By Thursday evening as Hurricane Ian moved off Florida’s East Coast and strengthened again, the park was left with the wreckage it caused the night before. Massive amounts of debris covered the upland areas. Cranes Roost Lake’s water levels reached above the boardwalks that hover over the lake and connect pedestrians to the walkways on land. Water covered most of the stadium-style seating that fronts the Eddie Rose Amphitheater – making it look more like the floating amphitheater it was originally designed to be. Altamonte Springs City Manager Frank Martz was not immediately available to respond to questions about drainage procedure. Earlier Thursday morning an emergency executive order in Altamonte Springs enforced a strict 5 mph speed limit on certain roads, including Central Parkway and Cranes Roost Boulevard, due to severe flooding. Amanda Rabines Rainfall levels along Ian’s trajectory reached from 14 to nearly 17 inches as the storm moved from coastal counties such as Sarasota inland to Orange, Osceola, and Polk Counties, even leaving more than 14 inches on the east coast’s Brevard and Volusia Counties. About 20 miles north of the storm’s landfall, the seaside town of Nokomis in Sarasota County was slammed with 14.20 inches of rain. In Polk County, just inland, Ian’s fury left 16.99 inches on Lake Wales, about midway between Sebring and Orlando. Osceola County’s town of Campbell as inundated with 15.65 inches, and in Orange County, Orlando was hit with 14.37 inches and Union Park, about 10 miles east of Orlando, received 14.88 inches. As the storm progressed northeast, it dumped 16.14 inches on Seminole County’s Lake Mary and 15.11 inches in Winter Springs. Ian maintained wind up to 81 mph as it reached the east coast’s Brevard County, where Titusville was hit with 14.07 inches of rain and the Nasa Shuttle Facility received 14.45 inches. In Volusia County just to the south, New Smyrna Beach got slammed with 15.42 inches. Bill Kearney Universal Orlando will begin reopening in phases to hotel guests only Friday, according to the resort. “We continue to conduct assessment and recovery efforts across our entire destination with the safety of guests and team members being our top priority,” the resort said in a statement. Universal began recalling employees to work Thursday night, according to its employee website. Before publicly announcing the phased resort reopening Thursday, Universal told employees scheduled for Friday they should be prepared to work. Katie Rice As Hurricane Ian leaves the state, 2.6 million people were without power as of Thursday evening, according to poweroutage.us. The majority of those outages were in southwest Florida where the storm made landfall Wednesday afternoon. Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier Thursday described the area, particularly Charlotte and Lee counties, as “off the grid.” Charlotte has 112,000 of 127,000 customers out while Lee has 412,000 customers out of the 471,000. In Collier County, 196,000 out of out of the 262,000 customers are out. As far as Central Florida: Orange: About 209,000 out of 603,000 customers are without power. Osceola: 19,000 out of 200,000 Polk: 162,000 out of 305,000 Seminole: 131,000 out of 225,000. Lake: 30,000 out of 169,000 Volusia: 247,000 out of 312,000 Brevard: 92,000 out of 330,000 David Harris Hurricane Ian has regained its strength over the Atlantic as the storm was once again upgraded to Category 1 hurricane during the National Hurricane Center’s 5 p.m. update. Although the storm has moved offshore from Central Florida, the NHC advised that major-to-record river flooding will continue across portions of central Florida, including the Little Wekiva River, which is already causing substantial area flooding and isn’t expected to crest until Sunday. A storm surge warning remains in effect for the St. Johns River and the NHC advises that hurricane conditions may continue into tonight for northeastern Florida. Hurricane Ian is currently located 240 miles south of Charleston, S.C., with maximum sustained winds of 75 MPH. Hurricane Ian is again a Category 1 storm as it heads for the coasts of North and South Carolina. Gatorland’s parking lot is flooded and an alarm is going off at the front entrance. Gatorland’s parking lot is flooded and an alarm is going off at the front entrance after Hurricane Ian. Legoland Florida in Winter Haven will also remain closed through Friday because of Hurricane Ian, the resort said Thursday. The resort will allow guests with tickets dated Wednesday, Sept. 28 through Sunday, Oct. 2 to redeem the tickets on another date through the end of the year. Energy Expert Says California Windfall Tax Is A Bad Idea
Energy Expert Says California Windfall Tax Is A Bad Idea https://digitalalabamanews.com/energy-expert-says-california-windfall-tax-is-a-bad-idea/ California implementing a windfall tax on oil companies would be harmful, according to an energy expert who spoke with FOX Business. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday called for a windfall profit tax to be levied on the profits above a set amount for companies involved in the extraction, production and refining of oil. The funds collected by the tax would then be “directed to rebates/refunds to California taxpayers impacted by high gas prices,” according to a press release from Newsom’s office.  “Crude oil prices are down but oil and gas companies have jacked up prices at the pump in California,” Newsom claimed in a statement. “We’re not going to stand by while greedy oil companies fleece Californians.” A customer pumps gas into their car at a gas station on May 18, 2022 in Petaluma, California.  ((Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) / Getty Images) The average price for regular gas in California was $6.29 as of Friday, according to AAA. That price is up 11.3% from the $5.58 average price a week ago. Meanwhile, the average price for regular gas nationwide Friday was roughly $3.80. GAS PRICES MOVING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE: GASBUDDY ANALYST Phil Flynn, a FOX Business contributor and senior market analyst at the Price Futures Group, said such a windfall tax would “further discourage investment in an industry that is desperately in need of capital to stay in business in an increasingly hostile governmental environment.” he said. In April 2021, Newsom signed an executive order aiming to halt oil extraction in California by 2045. More recently, in August, the California Air Resources Board moved to require all new vehicles in the state to operate on electricity by 2025, a policy the governor previously asked regulators to consider. It also doesn’t take into account that most of these energy companies in the past were losing money just a few years ago.” Flynn told FOX Business the windfall tax Newsom called for is a “tool to shift blame” onto oil companies “that are just trying to do their job and keep the market well supplied.” It would restrict supply and make prices rise in the long run, he said. Gavin Newsom unveils his proposed 2022-2023 state budget during a news conference in Sacramento, Calif., Monday, Jan. 10, 2022.  (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli / AP Newsroom) BIDEN’S ‘PRICE GOUGING’ WARNING TO OIL AND GAS COMPANIES IS ‘MIND-BOGGLING’: ENERGY EXPERT While a windfall tax may “sound nice to the average person,” Flynn said it actually would also reduce incentive and investment for oil companies and “strangle” their long-term viability. It could also impact people’s 401(K)s, he argued. “If these companies aren’t making profits, who’s going to invest in their oil stocks?” he said. “And if you have oil stocks in part of your 401(k) – whether you know it or not, most Americans do, they might not even realize – they’re taking money out of your 401(K) to pay for their bad policies because those stocks aren’t going to do as well.”  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ON FOX BUSINESS Read More…

LIV Golf: The Cases For And Against Receiving World Ranking Points
LIV Golf: The Cases For And Against Receiving World Ranking Points
LIV Golf: The Cases For And Against Receiving World Ranking Points https://digitalalabamanews.com/liv-golf-the-cases-for-and-against-receiving-world-ranking-points/ Question of the week [Sept. 26-Oct. 1]:  Should LIV Golf events be awarded Official World Golf Ranking points — why or why not? RELATED: The First Call Inbox archive No. No cut, no points. Kevin Alexander  Victoria, British Columbia  ————— The easy answer is no.  The OWGR was in place long before LIV Golf existed. It was well established and had been tweaked and adjusted to where it was fair for all concerned parties and enjoyed credibility in the golf world. It was and is a useful tool for determining who is eligible for various tournaments.  LIV created a new model that completely ignored the rules of the OWGR and yet somehow expected the OWGR and the rest of the golf world to accommodate them because they have a handful of the world’s top golfers on its roster.  The OWGR is based on strength of field, not strength of a half dozen golfers. There are rules on size of field, number of holes played and other factors that LIV totally ignored as it designed its new product. LIV could have consulted with OWGR in the design phase, but it knew the format would not be acceptable. LIV wanted to do what it wanted to do and assumed that it could force a presence on the OWGR after signing up a few top golfers. LIV is trying to disrupt a sound and effective system and should not be allowed to do so. John Abercrombie Cape Girardeau, Missouri ————— Absolutely. The LIV Golf players are every bit as good as guys on the PGA Tour. Most all of them came from the PGA Tour and played a role in making the Tour what it is. Bill Ramsey Grand Haven, Michigan —————   Since LIV Golf presently does not meet the qualifying criteria that the OWGR organization has used for 40 years, of course not. It’s that simple.   LIV Golf, which has been around for just a few months, doesn’t get to dictate terms. Rick Nowosad Calgary, Alberta ————— My answer is yes, but points should be highly discounted to address the weakness of the field, lack of a cut and the fact that events are only 54 holes. OWGR can come up with a formula in much the same way as it rates the various tour strength. Mike Hollywood Groveland, Florida ————— No world golf ranking points should be awarded to LIV golfers for playing in a three-day exhibition. LIV is a cash grab, and the players and [commissioner] Greg Norman should just acknowledge that, and continue down the road they have chosen.   Duane Ragland Chicago, Illinois ————— LIV golfers should not receive world ranking points until it either conforms to the current rules or the rules are changed to accommodate the league — which I hope the committee does not). LIV golfers knew the deal when they signed or they were misled about earning world ranking points. One or the other, they have made their bed and now they have to lay in it.  Collect the money until things change and move on. There’s no denying LIV has several top world-class golfers — Dustin Johnson and Cam Smith are first to mind. They and at least 46 others chose the money. They now have to wait on the system to work itself out, if that happens. Barry Duckworth Knoxville, Tennessee ————— No points for people who went to LIV Golf. The players knew the rules. They made a choice and knew the consequences. They took the money and need to take responsibility for their actions.  Stand tough Mr. [Jay] Monahan, [the PGA Tour commissioner].  Mike Bruckner  Haymarket, Virginia ————— Absolutely not. These are invitationals and not real golf tournaments. LIV Golf plays with shotgun starts and only 54 holes, with no cuts and limited fields. You might as well start awarding OWGR points to every country club invitational and member-guest event throughout the world. Just because they play for huge sums of money does not legitimize the quality of the event. Mike Gosnell Crestwood, Kentucky ————— If there is a formula — strength of field, holes played, course challenge, etc. — then I would expect the OWGR to be applied to LIV Golf as it applies to every other league or tournament.  Based upon the assumption that this is how they run it, I don’t know, and don’t really care about male professional golf right now. If not, and the majors and other power brokers in OWGR decide to twist the tail, then fine. In three to five years we will know whether the Saudis were in it for the long run and how this is all going to play out. I’m currently skimming and skipping my golf content, right over anything to do with LIV or PGA Tour. Mark Chatfield Houston, Texas ————— My answer is LIV Golf should absolutely not be awarded world golf points. The reason why is simple, those who choose to jump to the LIV league did so for the money. Let them stay with that. Why should they be allowed to benefit from the PGA and DP World tours that gave them so much? If I left one company to join another for the money, why should I expect to benefit from the company I deserted? I should not and would not. Don Moore  Warren, Pennsylvania ————— Absolutely not. Besides the obvious circus — like context and structure — of LIV Golf’s meaningless exhibitions, the fact is they are bought to play and there is no merit. The greats — Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Wayne Gretzky, Mark Spitz, Tom Brady, et al. — competed for titles, legacy, honor, integrity and the good of their sport. It wasn’t about money. No OWGR points for LIV. Larry Guli Waxhaw, North Carolina ————— Absolutely no.  LIV Golf does not meet the established criteria. The events remind me of a three-day member-guest. The International members that jumped ship to LIV took the money and thumbed their noses at International Team members at this year’s President Cup. We will never know if it would have been a closer outcome. The same can be said of the greedy American LIV members. I was impressed that Trevor Immelman did an outstanding job of captaining his Internationals team and making it a definite event to watch to the end.   Great job by the USA Team. Go USA! Brian Nelson North Haven, Connecticut ————— No, emphatically. There is not a full field, there is no cut, there is no qualifying opportunities, money is fully guaranteed for all participants. Can you spell “exhibition”? To be consistent the Hero World Challenge should also not receive world ranking points. The metric for world ranking points has to be similar for all events regardless of whether its LIV Golf or the PGA Tour. Reid Farrill Toronto, Canada —————   Of course not. There is simply no comparison between competitive PGA Tour tournament golf and exhibitions involving 48 participants played over 54 holes. There are only 10 golfers who joined LIV Golf who are even relevant at this point. It’s very nice for them to have their guaranteed money and I don’t begrudge them that, but their days of playing in majors and representing in the established international competitions should be over. Terry Fraser Huntsville, Alabama ————— ONLY ONE CHOICE Question of the week [Sept. 19-25]: If you could only play the courses designed by one golf course architect, who would that architect be and why? Read additional responses Seth Raynor.  Why? Just look at his body of work: Fisher’s Island, Shinnecock, Greenbrier, Yeamans Hall, Waialae, The Lido, Shoreacres, Yale, Mid-Ocean. He was C.B. Macdonald’s engineer, for gosh sakes. Raynor sculpted and drained The National Golf Links and Chicago Golf Club.   Along with Macdonald, they delivered “template holes” to the U.S. — Redan, Hogs Back, Biarritz, Lido, etc. Raynor’s courses still stand up incredibly well today (several in the Golf Digest Top 100). They’re typically right in front of you and not tricked up. He was prolific for his limited tenure in the business. Bill Ramsey Grand Haven, Michigan ————— Donald Ross. Simply the best shot values in golf. Butch English Lake Norman, North Carolina  ————— Gil Hanse. Solid routings, high shot values, good mix of variety while keeping a core design style — multiple ways to attack the hole, risk/reward and not penal.  Tim Nugent Milton, Georgia  ————— The First Call invites reader comment. Latvia Goes To Polls Amid Growing Rift Between Latvian Majority And Russian Minority https://digitalalabamanews.com/latvia-goes-to-polls-amid-growing-rift-between-latvian-majority-and-russian-minority/ VILNIUS, October 1 (Reuters) – Latvians will vote in parliamentary elections on Saturday, with polls predicting that Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins’s centre-right New Unity party will win the most votes, enabling him to continue his coalition with the conservative National Alliance. A victory for Karins could widen a growing rift between the Latvian majority and Latvia’s Russian-speaking minority over their place in society. The first Latvian head of government to survive a full four-year term, Karins is benefitting from driving the country’s hawkish stance against Russia, its amid widespread national anger over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The election campaign has been dominated by questions of national identity and security concerns, while urgent issues including soaring energy costs and high inflation were largely pushed aside. Karins told Reuters on Tuesday he believes the war in Ukraine has consolidated his NATO and European Union nation of 1.9 million, and said that if re-elected, he would integrate the Russian minority – a quarter of population – by having the country educate its children in the Latvian language. “We’re putting all of our focus on the youth, to make sure that regardless of what language is spoken at home, that the child grows up with all of the advantages of knowing our language, knowing our culture”, he said. Before Moscow invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 in what it terms a “special military operation”, tens of thousands of Russian speakers in Latvia used to gather every May 9 around a monument in Riga to commemorate the Soviet victory in World War Two. Their gatherings were banned after the invasion and the 84-metre structure in the centre of the capital was crushed with a bulldozer on orders from the government – which is dominated by ethnic Latvians and would prefer to bury the memories of being part of the former Soviet Union up to 1991. Popular TV broadcasts from Russia have been banned and the state language board has proposed renaming a central Riga street commemorating Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Karins’ government has put forward plans to switch all education to Latvian and to swiftly phase out instruction in Russian. The social democrat Harmony party, traditionally backed by Latvia’s Russian-speaking minority, received 19.8% of votes in the 2018 elections and became the largest opposition party in parliament. However, the latest survey indicates 7.3% support for Harmony. (Reporting by Andrius Sytas in Vilnius; Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky) Read More…

This Week https://digitalalabamanews.com/this-week/ At a Good Clip The Bullet That Missed, British TV presenter-turned-novelist Richard Osman’s “diverting third Thursday Murder Club mystery,” per our review, “delivers laughs along with a nicely woven plot involving fraud, murder, and life in the Kent retirement village of Coopers Chase.” It hits our hardcover fiction list at #3, with stronger first-week print unit sales than those of its bestselling predecessors combined. Literary Callbacks Characters from a pair of lit fic heavy hitters return, convening on our hardcover fiction list. At #7, Elizabeth Strout’s Lucy by the Sea is the latest “captivating entry in the Lucy Barton series,” per our starred review, after 2021’s Oh William! “This time, Lucy decamps to rural Maine during the first year of the Covid lockdown,” where “loneliness, grief, longing, and loss pervade intertwined family stories as Lucy and William attempt to create new friendships in an initially hostile town.” Five years after the publication of his Pulitzer-winning Less, Andrew Sean Greer is back with Less Is Lost, “another delightful road story featuring middle-aged writer Arthur Less,” according to our review. “Though a bit overboard at times, Greer packs in plenty of humor and some nicely poignant moments,” and lands at #14 on our list. Maybe New Sure, a Colleen Hoover bestseller isn’t exactly news anymore. But how about a new Colleen Hoover novel? Or new-ish, anyway: in 2018, after Atria had published Hoover’s Maybe Someday and Maybe Not, the author began posting the series finale, Maybe Now, one (unedited) chapter at a time for free on Wattpad; self-published paperback and e-book editions followed. This week, a new trade paper edition from Atria, which includes a new chapter, is the #7 book in the country. And watch this space: It Starts with Us, the sequel to Hoover’s It Ends with Us, is out October 18. NEW & NOTABLE THE DIVIDER Peter Baker and Susan Glasser #3 Hardcover Nonfiction For this “comprehensive and scathing chronicle of the Trump administration,” our starred review said, married journalists Baker and Glasser enrich “their own reporting with the juiciest material from the slew of books about the Trump presidency, fashion[ing] a coherent narrative out of the chaos.” ODDER Katherine Applegate #16 Children’s Fiction “Applegate delivers an uplifting tale of an inquisitive sea otter pup raised by scientists after being separated from her mother,” per our starred review. “Though humans make cameo appearances in this edifying novel about otter life, the focus remains rightfully on its enigmatic star: a lovable otter who not only survives against the odds but thrives.” A version of this article appeared in the 10/03/2022 issue of Publishers Weekly under the headline: Behind the Bestsellers Sept. 18–24, 2022 Read More…

Deadly Russian Strikes On Civilian Convoy As Putin Proclaims Annexation https://digitalalabamanews.com/deadly-russian-strikes-on-civilian-convoy-as-putin-proclaims-annexation/ Updated September 30, 2022 at 5:28 p.m. EDT|Published September 30, 2022 at 7:44 a.m. EDT Scene from the aftermath of suspected Russian missile strikes that killed at least 25 Ukrainians as they waited to deliver aid and to collect relatives from an area that Russian President Vladimir Putin moved to annex in violation of international law, in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, Sept. 30, 2022. (Photos by Wojciech Grzedzinski for The Washington Post/For The Washington Post) ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine — Hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of this contested region and vowed to protect the people living here, suspected Russian missiles tore through a convoy of civilians — leaving the latest victims of his war lying in body bags on the cold ground. They had waited hours beneath the trees of an old car market to begin the journey from Avtorynok, near the final checkpoint under Ukrainian control in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia province, to towns and cities seized by Russian forces in the early weeks of the war. Washington Post reporters had spoken the day before with men joining the convoy: Some were doctors, crossing battle lines to conduct lifesaving surgeries in hospitals that Russian forces have failed to adequately restock; others were ordinary civilians, trying to rescue loved ones who were too elderly or infirm to make the journey alone. Around 7 a.m. Friday, three suspected Russian missiles destroyed those plans. Explosions rocked the asphalt. The ground was strewn with bodies and shrapnel. Ukrainian officials said that at least 26 people were killed and another 85 wounded. The strikes were part of a wave of Russian missile, rocket and drone attacks launched across the southeast as Putin readied his annexation announcement, Ukrainian officials said. The contrast between the “great liberating mission” Putin claimed to be carrying out in occupied Ukraine and the brutal reality of the war he has inflicted on people here could not have been more stark. “I’m going to treat people with heart diseases as best I can over there, or I’ll put them in the car and bring them back here myself,” a 69-year old-surgeon, Vitaly, had said the day before, shrugging off the risks with a smile. “I’ll be fine.” His mustard-colored Lada was there among the wreckage Friday. Vitaly was one of a handful of shellshocked survivors. His face was a picture of grief. Some of the dead were lying next to their cars, or by bushes where they had searched for safety. When one of Vitaly’s companions received a phone call, the companion picked up and said, simply, ‘I’m here and I’m alive,” then ended the call. Friday’s strikes sent shock waves through a city already transformed by Putin’s war. Hospitals swung into action as casualties poured into their emergency rooms. Volunteers who have spent months turning the parking lot of a major supermarket into a welcome point for civilians fleeing occupied areas scrambled to move to another location, fearing that strikes on other humanitarian positions might follow. At the last checkpoint in Russian-held territory, fear and confusion rippled through a queue of Ukrainian vehicles, full of civilians trying to flee. Russian soldiers walked between the cars and told the drivers that the Ukrainian army was responsible for the strikes, passengers later said. “I didn’t believe it,” said Pavlo, a 23-year-old from the town of Tokmak. Like others interviewed, he spoke on the condition that only his first name be used, fearing repercussions for family members in Russian-held territory. “We had to carry on driving. The other option was staying at home and being conscripted by the Russians to fight against my fellow Ukrainians,” he said. As Putin declares a partial mobilization of Russians at home, Ukrainians in newly annexed lands fear that they may now be forced to fight their countrymen. Tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have already been killed since Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February. The International Criminal Court has launched an investigation into what appear to be war crimes on a massive scale. In a move that mirrored the stagecraft of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, Russian soldiers and local puppet authorities staged referendums across the territory they control in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, with victories of over 90% being recorded in each. Some votes were collected at gunpoint, escaped residents say. At the new welcome point in Zaporizhzhia, no one was watching Putin’s annexation speech. They already knew what he would say, and most families were focused on finding a place to spend the night. When asked about Putin’s latest declaration — that they were now Russian citizens “based on historical unity”— several residents rolled their eyes. Recent arrivals said they hoped the Ukrainian army, which has rolled back Russian gains in the east in recent weeks, would one day recapture the lands that Putin has claimed as his own. One of the volunteers, a 17-year-old named Yaroslav, said that he planned to enlist as soon as he reached the legal age of 18. He said that local separatist soldiers allied with Russia were now living in his home in the Zaporizhzhia town of Enerhodar. He had spoken with them before fleeing, he said, and they told him they never believed that Russia’s invasion would take them so far. “We’ve seen people suffering, we’ve seen people dying because of this war,” Yaroslav said. “For what?” As night fell in Avtorynok, possessions of the dead were still on the ground. A small photograph was nestled in the long grass. It showed a young couple beaming, and they looked very much in love. “I miss you so much,” read a note on the back. “Come back to me.” Serhii Korolchuk in Zaporizhzhia contributed to this report. War in Ukraine: What you need to know The latest: Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees Friday to annex four occupied regions of Ukraine, following staged referendums that were widely denounced as illegal. Follow our live updates here. The response: The Biden administration on Friday announced a new round of sanctions on Russia, in response to the annexations, targeting government officials and family members, Russian and Belarusian military officials and defense procurement networks. President Volodymyr Zelensky also said Friday that Ukraine is applying for “accelerated ascension” into NATO, in an apparent answer to the annexations. In Russia: Putin declared a military mobilization on Sept. 21 to call up as many as 300,000 reservists in a dramatic bid to reverse setbacks in his war on Ukraine. The announcement led to an exodus of more than 180,000 people, mostly men who were subject to service, and renewed protests and other acts of defiance against the war. The fight: Ukraine mounted a successful counteroffensive that forced a major Russian retreat in the northeastern Kharkiv region in early September, as troops fled cities and villages they had occupied since the early days of the war and abandoned large amounts of military equipment. Trump’s lawyers are objecting to Manhattan Judge Arthur Engoron’s continued involvement and accused Attorney General Letitia James’ office of attempting to “judge shop” because, in paperwork seeking assignment of a judge, it noted Engoron’s knowledge of the case and linked the lawsuit and subpoena disputes as “related” matters. In a letter Thursday to the court’s administrative judge, Trump lawyer Alina Habba argued that the lawsuit should instead be assigned to the court’s Commercial Division, which is set up to handle complex corporate litigation. James’ office, which filed the lawsuit last week, is angling to get the case to trial by the end of next year — before the first primaries in the 2024 presidential election. In a response, it said the case should remain with Engoron in part because of “the level of familiarity” he’s developed in handling discovery and subpoena issues in the underlying investigation. “Given the fact that this action involves allegations of an ongoing scheme and conspiracy to obtain millions of dollars through fraudulent activity, and that defendants repeatedly have sought to delay the conclusion of (James’ investigation), it is imperative that this case proceed quickly,” Wallace wrote. A court spokesperson said Engoron had no comment. James’ lawsuit alleges Trump and the Trump Organization inflated his net worth by billions of dollars and misled banks and others for years about the value of prized assets like golf courses, hotels and his Mar-a-Lago estate. She is seeking $250 million and a permanent ban on Trump doing business in the state. Trump’s three eldest children, Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric Trump, were also named as defendants, along with two longtime company executives. A lawyer for Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump sent a letter Thursday to the administrative judge echoing Habba’s call to move the case to the court’s Commercial Division. Engoron, a Democrat, has been involved in Trump-related cases since 2020, when he was assigned to intervene in quarrels among Trump’s lawyers and James’ office over demands for evidence and the direction of her investigation. Trump, a Republican who’s been laying groundwork for a potential comeback campaign for president, claimed bias after several of Engoron’s rulings went against him, saying in a statement: “I can’t get a fair hearing in New York because of the hatred of me by Judges and the judiciary. It is not possible.” In February, Engoron enforced a subpoena for Trump and two of his children, Ivanka and Donald Jr., to give deposition testimony under oath. They testified in August after a state appeals court rejected attempts to overturn the ruling. Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination more than 400 times. In April, Engoron held the former president in contempt of court and fined him for being slow to respond to a subpoena requiring him to turn over certain documents. Engoron lifted the contempt finding in June after Trump paid the $110,000 fine and complied with other demands. Engoron has also issued rulings ordering the Trump Organization and its appraiser, Cushman & Wakefield to hand over evidence, and requiring another son, Eric Trump, to testify at a deposition. Trump has decried James’ lawsuit as “Another Witch Hunt” and noted that his company’s financial disclosures warned banks not to trust the information provided. Habba said the allegations in the lawsuit are “meritless.” __ Follow Michael Sisak on Twitter at twitter.com/mikesisak Copyright © 2022 . All rights reserved. Fact Check: Jan. 6 Committee Could Make Referrals To Justice Department, Can https://digitalalabamanews.com/fact-check-jan-6-committee-could-make-referrals-to-justice-department-can/ The claim: The Jan. 6 committee is ‘ready to arrest’ Donald Trump after reviewing Secret Service text messages The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol did not gather as planned this week because of Hurricane Ian, but a Facebook post claims the panel of lawmakers is poised to make a significant move. “REPORT IS COMING! Pelosi’s panel READY TO ARREST Trump after reviewing 100k+ Secret Service texts,” reads the caption of a Sept. 25 video, which has been viewed more than 13,000 times in four days. But the claim is false. The committee does not have the power to arrest anyone, only to make recommendations to the Justice Department, which would then make its own determination whether to investigate. The 25-minute video with the post also does not support or relate to the claim of a Trump arrest. It is a clip from a CNN broadcast that includes an interview with Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., who is on the committee, in which she responds to questions about the now-delayed hearing. Jan. 6 committee can only make recommendations to prosecutors The committee has the ability to refer cases to the Justice Department, but those referrals are “just recommendations with no legal force,” Daniel Richman, a former federal prosecutor and law professor at Columbia University, told USA TODAY. “The (Justice Department) would doubtless take such recommendations seriously, particularly if strong support in law and fact are provided,” Richman said. “But it is under no obligation to proceed.” The primary objective of the committee is not to make criminal referrals, but to write a comprehensive report about what led to the Jan. 6 attack and make recommendations to avoid similar events in the future, the New York Times reported. Fact check: Video shows Elise Stefanik press conference, not attack on Adam Schiff The committee last met in a public setting in July, following a string of eight hearings that revealed more about the deadly riot and now-former President Donald Trump’s efforts to hold on to power. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., recently revealed that the committee has received about 800,000 pages of communication materials from the Secret Service. She said most text messages from on or around Jan. 6, 2021, which the committee has requested, haven’t been recovered.  PolitiFact also debunked the claim. Our rating: False Based on our research, we rate FALSE the claim that the Jan. 6 committee is “ready to arrest” Donald Trump after reviewing Secret Service text messages. CNN  —  Ian has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone after pummeling South Carolina Friday afternoon with destructive winds and life-threatening storm surge, and after killing at least 42 people in Florida, leaving behind a trail of apocalyptic destruction. The storm, which made landfall near Georgetown as a Category 1 hurricane, continues to pack winds of 70 mph as it moves farther inland over the Carolinas. “It should be emphasized that just because Ian has become a post-tropical cyclone that the danger is not over,” the National Hurricane Center warned. “Dangerous storm surge, flash flooding and high winds are still in the forecast from this cyclone.” Reports of property damage, power outages, and water-rescue calls have multiplied as officials across the state continue to issue dire warnings to residents to stay inside. FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES A hurricane warning was issued from the Savannah River at the Georgia-South Carolina state line to Cape Fear, North Carolina. Considerable flooding is possible from seawater and rain, especially in parts of coastal South Carolina, where storm surge up to 7 feet and 4 to 12 inches of rain could hit, forecasters say. And a tornado watch covering nearly five million people is in effect until 10 p.m. ET for parts of the Carolinas and Virginia, including Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, according to the Storm Prediction Center. More than 200,000 power outages were reported in South Carolina, as well as more than 138,000 in North Carolina, by 3:50 p.m. ET, according to PowerOutage.us. In Virginia, more than 17,000 customers have lost power, largely on the east and south sides of the state. Additionally, two piers in South Carolina – Cherry Grove Pier in North Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island Pier north of Charleston – partially collapsed Friday due to the storm. Pawleys Island Mayor Brian Henry told CNN the water has receded on the two causeways connecting the island to the mainland. No one is allowed back on the island until the damage has been assessed, Henry said, adding that there is a “tremendous amount of debris strewn across the island on the roads.” “It’s a pretty scary sight,” Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune said of Hurricane Ian. “I’m seeing way too many cars passing by. And I think people just don’t realize how dangerous it is to be out in these types of conditions. We’ve seen so many people’s cars get stuck and emergency personnel has to go out and rescue people.” Shelters in Charleston County will remain open until 4 p.m. on Saturday, the county said in a press release. Buses will start taking people from the shelters back to the original pick-up locations Saturday morning. “A lot of prayers have been answered,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said. “This storm is not as bad as it could have been, but don’t let your guard down yet. We are not out of the woods, there is water on the roads, still heavy winds, and it is still dangerous in many parts of the state.” Charleston International Airport’s airfield closed Friday because of high winds, the airport said. And Myrtle Beach residents are urged to stay inside during the storm, Mayor Brenda Bethune told CNN. Coastlines along Georgia and South Carolina may sustain significant alterations because the powerful waves and storm surges brought by Ian could inundate coastal sand dunes, according to the US Geological Survey. In addition to flooding communities behind the dunes, the storm may push sand back and deposit it inland, which could “reduce the height of protective sand dunes, alter beach profiles and leave areas behind the dunes more vulnerable to future storms,” the agency said. Meanwhile, Florida confronts the dizzying destruction Ian wrought through much of the peninsula Wednesday and Thursday after it smashed into the southwest coast as a Category 4 storm and plowed through central and northeastern areas. At least 42 deaths have been reported in the state. Homes on the coast were washed out to sea, buildings were smashed throughout the state, and floodwater ruined homes and businesses and trapped residents, even inland in places like the Orlando area. Hundreds of rescues have taken place by land, air and sea, with residents stuck in homes or stranded on rooftops, and searchers have made many wellness checks, especially in the Fort Myers and Naples areas, where a storm surge inundated streets and homes. Roger Desjarlais, manager of Lee County, which encompasses Fort Myers, told CNN Friday that it isn’t an overstatement to say that Hurricane Ian decimated parts of the area and “there has to be many fatalities.” “It looked as though someone had just dropped from the sky picked up hotels and buildings and took them away. So much so that in many places there wasn’t even debris,” Desjarlais said. “We also know that not as many people evacuated from those islands as we had hoped for. We know there has to be many fatalities yet to be accounted for.” President Joe Biden continued to pledge federal support for Florida as it deals with the devastation caused by the storm, which he said was “likely to rank among the worst… in the nation’s history.” “We’re just beginning to see the scale of that destruction,” Biden said, adding that the largest team of search and rescue experts “in recent history” was currently deployed to the state. “It’s going to take months, years to rebuild.” And now, the storm’s aftermath poses new, deadly dangers of its own. Some standing water is electrified, officials warned, while maneuvering through debris-strewn buildings and streets – many without working traffic signals – risks injury. Lack of air conditioning can lead to heat illness, and improper generator use can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. In North Port between Fort Myers and Sarasota, Rosanna Walker stood Thursday in the flood-damaged home where she rode out the storm. Part of her drywall ceiling was hanging down. “And all of a sudden, the water was coming in through the doors – the top, the bottom, the windows over here,” she told CNN. “It’s all in my closets; I’ve got to empty out my closets.” “Everything got ruined.” Claudette Smith, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office in Charlotte County, just north of Fort Myers, told CNN that the county is in desperate need of help as emergency services continue to be inundated “We need everything, to put it plain and simple. We need all hands on deck,” Smith said. “The people who have come to our assistance have been tremendously helpful, but we do need everything.” Many members of the community are without homes, water, and electricity, and there is currently only one operating hospital in the county. Here’s what to know about the destruction in Florida: • Deaths in Florida: At least 42 deaths that are suspected to be related to Ian have been reported in Florida. That includes 16 in Lee County, 12 in Charlotte County, eight in Collier County, three in Volusia County, one in Polk County and two in unincorporated Sarasota County, according to officials. Unconfirmed death cases are being processed by local medical examiners, who decide whether they are disaster-related, state emergency management Director Kevin Guthrie said. • Power outages: Florida had more than 1.6 million power outages as of Friday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us. Most counties with the highest percentage of residents without power lie in the southwest, including Lee, Charlotte, DeSoto and Hardee. • Historic flooding in Florida: Record flooding was recorded across central and northern Florida, including at least three rivers that hit all-time flood records. Officials in Orlando warned residents of dangerous flooding, which exceeded a foot in some areas. • Hundreds of rescues and thousands of evacuations: The US Coast Guard has performed over 275 rescues in Florida, Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson told CNN. More than 700 rescues have happened across Florida so far, the governor said Thursday, and thousands of evacuees have been reported. In Lee County, a hospital system had to evacuate more than 1,000 patients after its water supply was cut off, while other widespread evacuations have been reported in prisons and nursing homes. In Fort Myers, the fire chief was “pretty comfortable” by Friday morning that everyone needing help there had been rescued, Mayor Kevin Anderson said. The Coast Guard is treating this like a military operation searching “block by block to make sure that everybody gets out.” • Much of Fort Myers Beach obliterated: A helicopter flight over Fort Myers Beach shows utter devastation: empty or debris-littered lots where homes and businesses used to be and boats tossed into mangroves. “You’re talking about no structure left. … You’re talking about homes that were thrown into the bay. This is a long-term fix, and it’s life-changing,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said. • Coastal islands isolated from mainland: Sanibel and Captiva islands in southwest Florida are cut off from the mainland after several parts of a critical causeway were torn away. At least two people were killed in the storm in Sanibel, and the bridge may need to be completely rebuilt, local officials said. Chip Farrar, a resident of the tiny island of Matlacha, told CNN that 50 feet of road essential to reaching the mainland bridge has been washed out, and a second nearby bridge has also collapsed. • Insured losses in Florida may be enormous: Ian may have caused as much as $47 billion in insured losses in Florida, according to an estimate ...
