Former President Donald Trump’s two adult sons wanted stakes in their father’s media company even though they were barely involved, according to one of the co-founders of Trump Media & Technology Group. Will Wilkerson made the allegations about Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump in a story published by The Washington Post on Saturday. The story detailed accusations of infighting and potentially illegal activity at the company made by Wilkerson, who filed a whistleblower complaint to the SEC in August. “They were coming in and asking for a handout,” Wilkerson said of Donald Jr. and Eric, according to the Post. “They had no bearing in this company … and they were taking equity away from hard-working individuals.” The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment. In a statement provided to Insider, Trump Media & Technology Group blasted the Post’s reporting and touted Truth Social’s successes, such as launching on the Apple and Google app stores and attracting millions of users. “Ignoring these achievements, the Washington Post published a story rife with knowingly false and defamatory statements and other concocted psychodramas,” the statement said. The statement did not comment directly on specific allegations. Wilkerson, who served as senior vice president of operations, said he was fired on Thursday after talking to the Post, the outlet reported. Lawyers for Wilkerson did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment, but told the Post he is cooperating with the SEC and New York prosecutors investigating Trump Media. Wilkerson provided the Post with materials he had given the SEC that he said proved his claims about the company. Among the materials was a log kept by Wilkerson and two other co-founders detailing their daily experiences at the company. According to the Post, the log showed the three men weighed how to address the Trump family’s involvement in the business. One of the logs noted a person told them that Donald Jr. “needs a bedtime story and some love,” the outlet reported. Read More Here

N. Korea Fires Missile, Artillery Shells, Inflaming Tensions https://digitalalaskanews.com/n-korea-fires-missile-artillery-shells-inflaming-tensions-2/ A TV screen shows file images of North Korea’s missile launch during a news program at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised tests of long-range cruise missiles, which he described as a successful demonstration of his military’s expanding nuclear strike capabilities and readiness for “actual war,” state media said Thursday. (AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon) By HYUNG-JIN KIM and KIM TONG-HYUNG Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired a ballistic missile and hundreds of artillery shells toward the sea Friday and flew warplanes near the tense border with South Korea, further raising animosities triggered by the North’s recent barrage of weapons tests. The North Korean moves suggest it is reviving an old playbook of stoking fears of war with provocative weapons tests before it seeks to win greater concessions from its rivals. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement the short-range missile lifted off from the North’s capital region at 1:49 a.m. Friday (1649 GMT Thursday; 12:49 p.m. EDT Thursday) and flew toward its eastern waters. It was North Korea’s 15th missile launch since it resumed testing activities Sept. 25. North Korea said Monday its recent missile tests were simulations of nuclear strikes on South Korean and U.S. targets in response to their “dangerous” military exercises involving a U.S. aircraft carrier. Soon after the latest missile test, North Korea fired 130 rounds of shells off its west coast and 40 rounds off its east coast. The shells fell inside maritime buffer zones the two Koreas established under a 2018 inter-Korean agreement on reducing tensions, South Korea’s military said. On Friday afternoon, South Korea’s military said North Korea fired 90 additional shells off its east coast. It said it also spotted about 300 other North Korean artillery launches from two separate western coastal areas. In both cases, the North Korean shells were believed to have landed in the buffer zones again, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. Observers said it was North Korea’s third and most direct violation of the 2018 agreement, which created buffer zones and no-fly areas along their land and sea boundaries to prevent accidental clashes. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said it earlier sent North Korea a message asking it not to violate the agreement again. North Korea separately flew warplanes, presumably 10 aircraft, near the rivals’ border late Thursday and early Friday, prompting South Korea to scramble fighter jets. There were no reports of clashes between the two countries. It was reportedly the first time that North Korean military aircraft have flown that close to the border since 2017. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said North Korea’s provocations are becoming “indiscriminative'” but that his country has massive retaliation capabilities that can deter actual North Korean assaults to some extent. “The decision to attack can’t be made without a willingness to risk a brutal outcome,” Yoon told reporters. “The massive punishment and retaliation strategy, which is the final step of our three-axis strategy, would be a considerable psychological and social deterrence (for the North).” South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Friday it imposed sanctions on 15 North Korean individuals and 16 organizations suspected of involvement in illicit activities to finance North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile programs. They were Seoul’s first unilateral sanctions on North Korea in five years, but observers say they are largely a symbolic step because the two Koreas have little financial dealings between them. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters he supports South Korea’s decision to impose the sanctions. Most of the North’s recent weapons tests were ballistic missile launches that are banned by United Nations Security Council resolutions. But the North hasn’t been slapped with fresh sanctions thanks to a divide at the U.N. over U.S. disputes with Russia regarding its invasion of Ukraine and with China over their strategic competition. The missile launched Friday traveled 650-700 kilometers (403-434 miles) at a maximum altitude of 50 kilometers (30 miles) before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, according to South Korean and Japanese assessments. “Whatever the intentions are, North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches are absolutely impermissible and we cannot overlook its substantial advancement of missile technology,” Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said. The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement that the U.S. commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan remains “ironclad.” Other recent North Korean tests included a new intermediate-range missile that flew over Japan and demonstrated a potential range to reach the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam; long-range cruise missiles; and a ballistic missile fired from an inland reservoir, a first for the country. After Wednesday’s cruise missile launches, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his nuclear forces were fully prepared for “actual war to bring enemies under their control at a blow” and vowed to expand the operational realm of his nuclear armed forces, according to North Korea’s state media. Some observers had predicted North Korea would likely temporarily pause its testing activities this week in consideration of its ally China, which is set to begin a major political conference Sunday that is expected to give President Xi Jinping a third five-year term as party leader. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular briefing Friday that all related countries should work to prevent tensions from escalating and move toward restarting meaningful talks. North Korea’s ongoing testing spree is reminiscent of its 2017 torrid run of missile and nuclear tests that prompted Kim and then-U.S. President Donald Trump to exchange threats of total destruction. Kim later abruptly entered high-stakes nuclear diplomacy with Trump in 2018 but their negotiations fell apart a year later due to wrangling over how much sanctions relief Kim should be provided in return for a partial surrender of his nuclear capability. Kim has repeatedly said he has no intentions of resuming nuclear diplomacy. But some experts say he would eventually want to win international recognition of his country as a nuclear state and hold arms control talks with the United State to wrest extensive sanctions relief and other concessions in return for partial denuclearization steps. The urgency of North Korea’s nuclear program has grown since it passed a law last month authorizing the preemptive use of nuclear weapons over a broad range of scenarios, including non-war situations when it may perceive its leadership as under threat. Most of the recent North Korean tests were of short-range nuclear-capable missiles targeting South Korea. Some analysts say North Korea’s possible upcoming nuclear test, its first bomb detonation in five years, would be related to efforts to manufacture battlefield tactical warheads to be placed on such short-range missiles. These developments sparked security jitters in South Korea, with some politicians and scholars renewing their calls for the U.S. to redeploy its tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea as deterrence against intensifying North Korean nuclear threats. North Korea’s military early Friday said it took unspecified “strong military countermeasures” in response to South Korea’s artillery fire for about 10 hours near the border on Thursday. South Korea’s military later confirmed it conducted artillery training at a frontline area but said its drills didn’t violate the conditions of the 2018 agreement. Maj. Gen. Kang Ho Pil of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a televised statement that South Korea issued “a stern warning to (North Korea) to immediately halt” its weapons tests. South Korea’s military said it will begin an annual 12-day field training Monday to hone its operational capabilities under various scenarios of North Korean provocations. It said an unspecified number of U.S. troops plan to take part in this year’s drills. —— Associated Press writer Mari Yamaguchi in Tokyo and video producer Liu Zheng in Beijing contributed to this report. Xi Signals Continuity At China Communist Party Congress
Xi Signals Continuity At China Communist Party Congress
Xi Signals Continuity At China Communist Party Congress https://digitalalaskanews.com/xi-signals-continuity-at-china-communist-party-congress/ BEIJING (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping signaled Sunday that his government would maintain policies that have put it at odds with the U.S. and other nations and deepened Communist Party control of the economy and society. Xi, speaking at the opening of a twice-a-decade party congress that is expected to give him a third five-year term, extolled the achievements of the past five years and said the party would strive to achieve what it calls the “rejuvenation” of the nation. “Our future is bright, but we still have a long way to go,” Xi said to the more than 2,000 delegates attending the opening, held in the massive Great Hall of the People that overlooks Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing. “We must foster a firmer sense of purpose, fortitude and self-belief in the whole party and the Chinese people so that we cannot be swayed by fallacies, deterred by intimidation or cowed by pressure,” he said. A third term for Xi would break with recent precedent and further establish him as arguably the most powerful Chinese politician since Mao Zedong. Xi called for further investments in the party’s military wing, the People’s Liberation Army, and reaffirmed that China will not rule out using force to bring the self-governing island of Taiwan under its control. “Reunification definitely must be achieved and reunification definitely will be achieved,” he said. Taiwan and China split during a civil war in 1949 that brought the communists to power in China. Many Taiwanese reject the term “reunification,” saying they were never part of communist China. With Xi expected to remain, little change is foreseen in China’s economic and foreign policies, as well as in his intolerance of criticism and hardline approach to COVID-19 including quarantines and travel bans. Xi defended the pandemic response, saying it “put the people and their lives above all else.” The weeklong congress, the 20th in the history of the century-old party, comes as the economy is facing major headwinds from a sharp real estate slowdown, the war in Ukraine and the economic toll on tourism, retail and manufacturing from COVID-19 restrictions. As with most Chinese political events, little information has been released beforehand and the outcome will only be announced next weekend, after days of closed-door sessions. The congress will likely approve an amendment to its charter that could further elevate Xi’s status as leader. The spokesperson for the congress, Sun Yeli, offered few details at a news conference Saturday. He said the changes would “meet new requirements for advancing the party’s development and work in the face of new circumstances and new tasks.” The previous congress in 2017 incorporated Xi’s ideology, known as Xi Jinping Thought, into the party constitution. The ideology is vague but emphasizes reviving the party’s mission as China’s political, economic, social and cultural leader and its central role in achieving national rejuvenation. Xi, who has been leader for 10 years, has already amassed great power, placing himself in charge of domestic affairs, foreign policy, the military, the economy and most other key matters through party working groups that he leads. Under his leadership, the country has expanded its global footprint while tightening already strict controls on information and dissent. A rare public protest last week, in which banners attacking Xi and the COVID-19 policy were hung in Beijing, was quickly scrubbed from the internet and any discussion of it quashed. Xi presented as achievements Chinese policies toward Taiwan and semi-autonomous Hong Kong that have been harshly criticized by the U.S. and other democracies. He said that steps taken after major protests in Hong Kong in 2019 had restored order and ensured it is governed by patriots. His government imposed a national security law imposed on the city that has all but eliminated opposition voices and demands for democracy. Read More Here

BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping said China reserves the option of “taking all measures necessary” against “interference by outside forces” on the issue of Taiwan. In a wide-ranging speech Sunday, Xi spoke firmly about China’s resolve for reunification with the self-governed island, which Beijing considers part of its territory. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the ruling Communist Party of China’s 20th National Congress, held once every five years. “We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort,” Xi said in Chinese, according to an official translation. “But, we will never promise to renounce the use of force. And we reserve the option of taking all measures necessary.” “This is directed solely at interference by outside forces and a few separatists seeking Taiwan independence,” he said, emphasizing that resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese to resolve. Cross-strait tensions Money Report Tensions around Taiwan have intensified this summer after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s controversial visit to the island. The visit came despite warnings from China, which maintains the island should have no right to conduct foreign relations. The U.S. recognizes Beijing as the sole legal government of China, while maintaining unofficial relations with Taiwan. On Sunday, Xi gave the issue of Taiwan greater prominence in his speech than he had five years ago at the party’s 19th National Congress. The high-level meeting decides which officials will become the leaders of the party, and ultimately, of China. Next weekend, the names of the new core team around Xi are due to be announced. State titles such as president and premier are officially confirmed at an annual meeting of the Chinese government, typically held in March. Read More Here

Kenan Thompson opened the sketch as Rep. Bennie Thompson, who explained that the committee was formed to fight back against the attempted insurrection of the U.S. government: “We assembled a team of monotone nerds to do a powerpoint.” Heidi Gardner’s Liz Cheney chimed in on the Democratic/Republican divide over the panel by saying, “Whether you’re a Republican who’s not watching or a Democrat who’s nodding so hard your head is falling off, one person is responsible for this insurrection, Donald Trump, and one person will suffer the consequences, me.” This led to an extended riff on Cheney’s decision to be so vocally anti-Trump as a consequence of being raised by Dick Cheney. Biden Says January 6 Committee Has Made An 'overwhelming' Case KTVZ
Biden Says January 6 Committee Has Made An 'overwhelming' Case – KTVZ https://digitalalaskanews.com/biden-says-january-6-committee-has-made-an-overwhelming-case-ktvz/ By Betsy Klein and Shawna Mizelle, CNN President Joe Biden said on Saturday the video and testimony shared at the January 6 hearing this week was “devastating” and said the committee overall has made an “overwhelming” case. Asked his thoughts on the hearing during an unannounced stop at a Baskin-Robbins in Portland, Oregon, Biden said, “I think the testimony, the video are absolutely devastating. And I’ve been going out of my way not to comment, see what happens, but it’s just — I think it’s been devastating.” The final hearing ahead of the midterms from the House Select Committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, revealed new evidence and testimony from former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, who said that then-President Donald Trump knew he had lost his bid for reelection even as he continued efforts to overturn the results. Thursday’s hearing included footage of congressional leaders scrambling to respond to the attack on the Capitol as they took refuge by working around Trump and coordinating with other federal and local government officials to thwart the ongoing violence and new evidence of a Trump plan to declare victory regardless of the election results. “I mean, the case has been made, it seems to me fairly overwhelming,” Biden said on Saturday. Saturday’s comments are an escalating rebuke from the President who does not regularly comment on January 6. Biden, who has often said he won’t interfere in the independence of the Justice Department, declined to comment further and reiterated that he had not spoken to Attorney General Merrick Garland on the matter “at all.” In a rare move, the January 6 committee also voted on Thursday to subpoena Trump for documents and testimony. It is not expected that the former President will comply with the subpoena, but the action serves as a way for the committee to set down a marker and show that it wants information directly from Trump as the panel investigates the attack. The select committee’s investigation is working toward a final report, though it’s still not clear what shape that will take or when it might be released. Sources say the panel has also not yet made any decision on whether to make any criminal referrals to the Department of Justice. The-CNN-Wire & © 2022 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Trump Spent 91 Cents To Raise Each Dollar As Troubles Mounted
Trump Spent 91 Cents To Raise Each Dollar As Troubles Mounted https://digitalalaskanews.com/trump-spent-91-cents-to-raise-each-dollar-as-troubles-mounted/ (Bloomberg) — Former President Donald Trump raised $24 million in the third quarter, a 41% increase over the previous quarter, but he spent $22 million to do it. Most Read from Bloomberg Rolex Prices to Drop Further as Supply Surges: Morgan Stanley Diesel Hits Chaos Mode in Fresh Blow for Global Economy Secret Service Minimized Threats Before Jan. 6, Documents Show Putin Tried for Years to Stop His Military From Using Western Parts — And Mostly Failed A $25 Billion Grocery Deal Takes Fight to Walmart Trump spent 91 cents to raise every dollar, according to the latest filings with the Federal Election Commission. The high-cost, low-margin fundraising came as Trump’s legal problems mounted following revelations from the House Select Committee investigating his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot of his supporters in the Capitol. In August, agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his Mar-a-Lago residence, recovering classified documents that are the subject of an ongoing legal battle. In September, New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, filed a $250 million civil lawsuit alleging business fraud against Trump and his three adult children. Trump capitalized on the legal battles with fundraising appeals. Following the FBI raid, Save America Joint Fundraising Committee, the part of his political operation that solicits his small-dollar donors, sent emails that read in part: “The lawlessness, political persecution, and Witch Hunt, must be exposed and stopped.” After James filed the lawsuit, supporters received emails with the subject line “Radical Democrats campaigned on SUING ME.” Both emails asked for donations. Small Donations How much those appeals raised can’t be calculated from Trump’s filings, since he doesn’t have to itemize contributions for donors who give less than $200, and they accounted for $9.8 million of Trump’s third-quarter haul. To reach them, Trump spent $7.3 million on SMS appeals and a little less than $7.3 million on online ads. His third-biggest expense went to rentals of donor lists, which cost $2.8 million. It’s not the first time that Trump’s small-dollar fundraising operation has had low returns for its spending. In the third quarter of 2020, Trump Make America Great Again, the small-dollar donor arm of his re-election effort, spent 77 cents to raise each dollar. Still, the money he’s brought in is unprecedented for a former president. Since losing the 2020 election, Trump has raised $387 million and, despite the low rate of return in the third quarter, is flush with cash at a time when many of his party’s candidates are being outraised in the midterms. Save America, his leadership PAC, had $93 million cash on hand at the end of August, according to FEC filings. It received another $3.3 million from the joint fundraising committee in September. Trump has endorsed more than 280 candidates in federal, state, local and international elections since leaving office, but Save America has given only $910,500, spread among 181 candidates, through the end of August. That’s a fraction of the money he’s raised. By law, his PAC can give no more than $5,000 per election to a federal campaign. Key Races Some Trump-endorsed candidates running for key seats that will help decide control of Congress, including in the US Senate races in Ohio and Arizona, are being outraised and outspent by Democrats. To offset that, Trump’s allies launched a super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., to back his endorsed candidates. It has spent $5 million so far to support GOP Senate candidates in Arizona, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Nevada. The super PAC, which launched on Sept. 23, reported no receipts to the FEC during the third quarter. It only started booking air time in October. Save America has donated $4.1 million to a handful of federal Super PACs that backed candidates he endorsed, and $2.8 million to Take Back Georgia, which supported former Senator David Perdue’s unsuccessful challenge to Governor Brian Kemp. It also gave $1 million donations to America First Policy Institute, a think tank staffed with officials from Trump’s administration, and to the Conservative Partnership Institute, which is led by Mark Meadows, his former chief of staff. Kamala Harris Campaigns With Gretchen Whitmer In Potential 2028 Preview
Kamala Harris Campaigns With Gretchen Whitmer In Potential 2028 Preview https://digitalalaskanews.com/kamala-harris-campaigns-with-gretchen-whitmer-in-potential-2028-preview/ DETROIT —  Vice President Kamala Harris smiled, laughed and showered her fellow Democrats with compliments as she campaigned in Detroit on Saturday with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who remains a favorite for reelection even as her race with Republican Tudor Dixon appears to tighten. But politicos watching Harris’ and Whitmer’s appearance together were interested in more than the governor’s chances in next month’s midterm elections. The vice president and the governor, now allies, are seen as possible future rivals and could well face each other in a presidential primary in 2024 or 2028, depending on whether President Biden seeks another term, as he has promised. At a Michigan Democratic Party fundraising event at a facility that trains young people for jobs in tech and construction, Harris greeted Whitmer with a hug. She opened her speech by thanking and praising the governor, whom she called an “extraordinary leader” who is “always about real talk” and had kept her campaign promise to “fix the damn roads.” But at the highest levels of American politics, permanent allies can be hard to find. Harris and Whitmer “have played well and supported each other,” said John Sellek, a Lansing, Mich.-based Republican consultant who led Utah Sen. Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign in the state. “But I think Republicans feel it’s safe to say that if Biden didn’t run for reelection, or even if Biden serves a second term, that friendship will become secondary to pursuing the presidency.” Vice President Kamala Harris with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. (Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times) The future of the Democratic Party is a subplot that has appeared throughout this midterm campaign season for Harris, who ran for the nomination in 2020 but has been unable to position herself as the prohibitive favorite to succeed Biden. Her encounters with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have drawn similar interest, given his role as a former candidate and rising star in the party. Both Whitmer and Harris gained stature during Donald Trump’s presidency, when Democrats sought a counterweight and Republicans saw both women as targets. Trump went after Whitmer repeatedly in his public comments, elevating her national profile. He showed little remorse when state and federal officials charged 13 extremists with a plot to kidnap her in October 2020. “She’s just tough as nails,” said Jill Alper, a Michigan-based Democratic consultant. Whitmer’s standing as a favorite for reelection in a state that helped Trump secure the 2016 election has only enhanced her national appeal among Democrats, who have lost their lock on the group of Midwestern states that were once the center of their “blue wall.” “I don’t think Michigan’s going to stop being a swing state in the future. I think any Democrat who wants to become president is going to have to carry Michigan,” said Mark Brewer, chairman of the state Democratic Party from 1995 to 2013. “What better way to carry Michigan than to have a candidate from Michigan?” Brewer noted that Buttigieg moved his official residency from Indiana to Michigan this summer, and added that Whitmer could just as easily seek a Senate seat or Cabinet nomination. But Whitmer’s flirtations with higher office, while tantalizing, have become a political liability in her reelection effort. She raised eyebrows in June when she declined in an NBC interview to say whether Biden should seek reelection and called interest in her own potential candidacy “flattering.” In an interview with the Detroit News on Tuesday, she promised to serve her full second term if reelected and called national speculation that she would run for higher office in the near term “baloney.” Harris’ allies have also tried to quiet talk about her ambition to run for president, especially as Biden insists he will be on the ballot in 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris greets well-wishers at Southfield High School in Detroit on Saturday. (Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times) “It’s six years away,” said Bakari Sellers, a co-chair in Harris’ 2020 campaign who is now a CNN commentator. “Kamala Harris is trying to win races in the midterms. She’s not out here running for president. There’s no rivalry between Kamala and Gretchen and anybody else.” Biden’s and Harris’ low polling numbers have made it challenging for them to campaign for fellow Democrats, some of whom have reason to avoid joint appearances with their parties’ top leaders. Biden has said he will do whatever helps his allies the most, even if that means staying away. Neither Biden nor Harris have appeared at many campaign rallies. Harris remains in demand as a fundraiser and, in many places, as a promoter of the administration’s accomplishments. People close to her say her campaign strategy is tied more to her appeal with key demographic groups — including women, people of color and young voters — than regions of the country. Hers is similar in some ways to the role played by former Republican Vice President Mike Pence, who courted evangelical voters and members of the Republican establishment who were uncomfortable with Trump. Harris, notably, has spoken more extensively and forcefully about abortion rights than Biden has, emerging as the administration’s main spokesperson on the issue after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade in June. Democrats hope a ballot initiative adding abortion rights to Michigan’s Constitution will help drive turnout in the state, where several House races remain competitive. Harris appeared in a series of interviews with Black-oriented radio stations in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Milwaukee this week, and also spoke in July to the Essence Festival, a Black-oriented gathering in New Orleans. She also spoke with news radio stations in Philadelphia, Detroit and Minneapolis this week. After the state party fundraiser at the job training site on Saturday, Harris and Whitmer toured the facility together. Later that afternoon, Harris spoke at an organizing event for first-time voters in a Detroit suburb. In a packed gymnasium at Southfield High School, Harris — at 57, the youngest of the Democrats’ current national leaders — addressed a boisterous crowd of students and parents. “To the young leaders here, I will say: I know you guys have been through a lot these past two years,” she said. “People that have had to go through the most … are usually some of the most generous people you’ve ever met.” Voting, she added, is one of the greatest ways that young people can serve their communities: “Our nation needs you.” After the high school event, Harris headed to the airport. She had to catch a flight home to California, where Gov. Gavin Newsom has emerged as another potential rival. Read More Here

Russia-Ukraine War Latest: What We Know On Day 235 Of The Invasion https://digitalalaskanews.com/russia-ukraine-war-latest-what-we-know-on-day-235-of-the-invasion/ At least 11 people were killed and 15 wounded at a military training ground in south-west Russia’s Belgorod region when two volunteers opened fire on other troops, the Russian defence ministry said. The shooters were nationals from a former Soviet republic and had been shot dead after Saturday’s shooting, the ministry said, calling it a terrorist attack. Baza, a Russian news site with close ties to police, said the shooting occurred at 10am local time during shooting practice. Elon Musk has announced his company SpaceX will continue to pay for Starlink satellite internet in Ukraine, a day after suggesting he could not keep funding the project. “The hell with it,” the billionaire tweeted on Saturday. “Even though Starlink is still losing money & other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we’ll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free.” Russia has continued to try to hit Ukrainian’s energy infrastructure but Vladimir Putin’s forces did not appear to have enjoyed any significant success. One missile seriously damaged a key energy facility in the region around Ukraine’s capital, however, and 10 missiles and four drones hit locations in the south-eastern city of Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian forces have repelled Russian attacks near 11 settlements, the Kyiv Independent has reported. According to the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces, Russian forces were attempting to advance near the settlements of Novosadove, Yakovlivka, Berestove, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Opytne, Krasnohorivka, Nevelske, Pervomaiske, Mariinka, and Pobieda. France will train up to 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers on its territory, France’s minister for the armed forces told Le Parisien newspaper in an interview on Saturday. Sebastien Lecornu said soldiers would “be taken into our units for several weeks”, and that France would also provide Ukraine with Crotale air defence systems, without specifying how many. Iran has reiterated that it rejects accusations it has supplied Russia with weapons “to be used in the war in Ukraine”, its foreign ministry said. The topic is due to be discussed by EU foreign ministers in a meeting in Luxembourg on Monday. In a statement, the Iranian foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, “emphasised that the Islamic republic of Iran has not and will not provide any weapon to be used in the war in Ukraine”. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has revealed the identity of the “Ghost of Vinnytsia” who had replaced the “Ghost of Kyiv”, which turned out to be propaganda. The pilot, named as Vadym, has been Ukraine’s poster fighter in the past few weeks after multiple reports of Russian losses in Ukrainian skies. A fuel depot in Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, caught fire after shelling on Saturday, its governor said, without specifying the shelling’s origin. The Russian foreign ministry has confirmed the re-equipping of Belarusian Su-25 aircraft to carry nuclear weapons, according to the Belarusian Hajun project. Ukrainian troops have launched an offensive in Kherson oblast, the Kyiv Independent reported, while it has not been confirmed by Ukraine. Dane Partridge, a 34-year-old man from Idaho who fought as a volunteer soldier in Ukraine, died on Tuesday from injuries sustained during a Russian attack in Luhansk, AP reported. Read More Here

She had four goals and two assists in the win for the Centurions (8-3, 8-2), who are ranked No. 2 in WPIAL Class A. She also had five goals in a 9-0 victory over Serra Catholic. The fast-moving forward had 100 goals and 56 assists for her four-year career heading into the weekend. What was it like to score your 100th goal, and how did the goal develop? It felt great. I received the ball on our half of the field and started dribbling forward and attempted to pass it to Riley Kerr to do a 1-2 pass, but it was blocked by a defender and bounced back to me and I drove toward the goal and scored. I appreciate all the efforts of my teammates in helping me get there. How much momentum does GCC have going into the playoffs? We are taking one game at a time and learning from each one. You were injured against Springdale. What happened, and how much time did you miss? I tweaked my knee and just took the rest of that week off. What went wrong in the pair of losses to Springdale? We were not playing how we can play, and simple mistakes by all of us were made that I think we have learned from now. What do you like about new coach Kara Batey’s system? I like the incorporation of more recovery in practices. You went to the WPIAL and PIAA final last year. How much of a challenge will it be to get back? It was amazing to just make it to both the WPIAL final and PIAA final for the last two years. How well we play together as a team and positively support each other in each game will dictate how far we go this year. How much different is this year’s GCC team from last year’s? We are a younger team this year but have lots of potential. What set Youngstown State apart from other schools? The players and team culture really made it stand out compared to other schools. Who is the best player you’ve played against? Loren Gehret (of Southern Columbia). You go to PKs against your sister, Sam. Who wins? I think I would win. Why do you wear pink shoes? Pink is my favorite color, and it became my signature. Do you have any pets? Yes, I have three dogs. Who is your celebrity crush? Paul Walker. Best student section theme you have seen at GCC? We mainly do basic ones, but my favorite is USA. Chick-fil-A or McDonald’s? Chick-fil-A. Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts? Starbucks. Did you ever think about kicking for the football team? Actually, I was asked by our AD if I would do that this year, but I decided against it. Carlo Denis School: Greensburg Central Catholic Sport: Soccer Class: Senior Claim to fame: Denis, 18, has been a scoring machine for the Centurions (14-1). He scored five goals Saturday in the Centurions’ nonsection 7-0 win at Class 2A Elizabeth Forward. He has 49 goals this season and more than 130 in his career. It was the Centurions 10th consecutive victory. In the third game of the season, Denis scored his 100th career goal, the winner, as the Centurions rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Bentworth, 4-3. When did you start playing soccer? I was 3 or 4 when I started. I loved it from the start because I was so fast, and I enjoyed scoring goals. Who got you started playing? I believe my mom (Lori) and dad (B.J.) put me in youth soccer. I always liked it. They both went to GCC. My dad played baseball and my mom basketball. What has been your most memorable moment in high school? When we won back-to-back WPIAL titles my freshman and sophomore seasons. Last year, we lost in the WPIAL finals to Winchester Thurston and to Eden Christian in the PIAA playoffs. We lost to Faith Christian Academy in the PIAA finals in 2020. What are the goals for this season? I want to win another WPIAL title and make it to the PIAA finals again and reverse the 2020 result. Do you play any other sport at GCC? I run track in the spring. I run the 100 and sprints and the 400 relay. Track helps me keep in shape. What are your favorite subjects in school? I like math and science. I think they are very interesting. Have you picked a college yet, and what will your major be? I’m going to Grove City to play soccer and major in engineering. Who is your favorite soccer player? I like the way Sergio Aguero plays. I try to pattern my game after him. If you could have lunch or dinner with anyone in the word, who would it be and why? I probably pick Sergio. It would be neat to talk about his career and see if he could offer me any tips on being a better player. What is your favorite food? I like hot chicken wings from Dino’s. What is one of your favorite hobbies? I like to play video games. My favorites are Minecraft and Call of Duty. I have an Xbox, and I also play on my computer. Where is a vacation spot you’d like to visit? I want to visit Italy because that’s where my grandparents were from, and I’d like to visit Rome and other popular locations. Where is your favorite vacation spot? I like the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It’s always a fun time there. Bill Beckner Jr. is a Tribune-Review Staff Writer. Secret Service Documents Handed Over To January 6 Committee Show Law Enforcement Discussed Capitol Threats – KESQ https://digitalalaskanews.com/secret-service-documents-handed-over-to-january-6-committee-show-law-enforcement-discussed-capitol-threats-kesq/ By Zachary Cohen and Whitney Wild, CNN Documents provided to the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection by the US Secret Service show that the agency and its law enforcement partners were aware of social media posts that contained violent language and threats aimed at lawmakers prior to the US Capitol attack. The documents, obtained exclusively by CNN, were handed over to the committee ahead of Thursday’s hearing, and shed new light on discussions between law enforcement agencies ahead of the attack. The documents also show the Secret Service took into account assessments from partner agencies, including the FBI and US Capitol Police, as they determined their security posture ahead of the January 6 vote certification. Despite the violent online rhetoric shared in these documents, none of the agencies gave a clear warning about the potential for large scale violence like what unfolded at the Capitol building that day, in spite of information they were sharing. “No immediate threats being tracked at this time,” one summary of the FBI intelligence assessment related to January 6 that was shared with the Secret Service read. However, the Secret Service was alerted to social media posts from sites such as Parler, which was then a popular far-right platform. “Will fight for Trump no matter what,” one post flagged to the Secret Service read. “When we say taking the power away from corruption we meant it,” said another. The documents do not address other concerns raised by the committee last week, including inconsistent testimony from Secret Service witnesses, who told the panel “they had received no intelligence about violence that could have potentially threatened any of their protectees on January 6th, including the vice president.” “Evidence strongly suggests that this testimony is not credible,” Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California said during Thursday’s hearing. Following the hearing, Schiff said in an interview with CNN that the committee intends “to bring people back in from the Secret Service, some who may have testified in ways that we don’t find credible now that we have obtained this documentary evidence, but other witnesses potentially that we have not heard from as well.” In a statement to CNN, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the service “engaged in robust intelligence sharing” with its law enforcement partners “before and during January 6th.” “Intelligence was received from and sent to multiple federal state and local agencies. Included are the redacted examples of these communications that were referenced in Thursday’s committee hearing and show the multi-agency communication,” he said. “Though the Secret Service’s specific mission was executed without compromise, the unprecedented events of that day continue to be evaluated to ensure an attack on our democracy can never occur again,” Guglielmi said. “This is not only paramount to our institutions of government but speaks to the very existence and purpose of the United States Secret Service.” Guglielmi also told CNN that the Secret Service “never received a communication from the committee about an employee’s testimony being contradicted.” The House Select Committee declined to comment when asked about the documents. Thursday’s hearing was the first since July 21. In the nearly three months since that hearing, the committee obtained more than 1 million records from the Secret Service. The panel revealed some of what they learned during Thursday’s hearing. While there are still questions surrounding erased text messages from Secret Service agents around the insurrection, the panel obtained messages and emails showing the agency receiving warnings before January 6, 2021, about the prospect of violence, as well as real-time reports of weapons in the crowd ahead of Trump’s speech at the Ellipse. Schiff said during Thursday’s hearing that the Secret Service had received alerts of online threats made against then-Vice President Mike Pence ahead of the Capitol insurrection, including that Pence would be “‘a dead man walking if he doesn’t do the right thing.’” On January 6, one Secret Service agent texted at 12:36 p.m., according to the committee, “With so many weapons found so far; you wonder how many are unknown. Could be sporty after dark.” Another agent responded minutes later, “No doubt. The people at the Ellipse said they are moving to the Capitol after the POTUS speech.” The-CNN-Wire & © 2022 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Discovery Company. All rights reserved. Biden says Jan. 6 committee testimony was ‘devastating’ U.S. President Joe Biden said testimony and video from last week’s Jan. 6 committee hearing, which featured congressional leadership in tense phone calls with Pentagon and White House officials, was “devastating.” Biden was speaking to reporters during a stop at an ice cream shop in Oregon as he helped campaign for Tina Kotek, who is running for governor or Oregon. Biden, campaigning for Oregon’s Kotek, warns about Trump’s impact on states U.S. President Joe Biden warned that former President Donald Trump’s hold on the Republican Party would spill into state government on Saturday during an event to boost Democrat Tina Kotek in Oregon’s tight race for governor. Biden, who is finishing a western travel swing that included stops in Colorado and California, came to Oregon in part to help Kotek, who supporters hope will keep the governorship in Democratic hands in a state the president won handily in 2020. Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock trade blows in Georgia U.S. Senate debate Democratic U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker sparred over a range of issues from abortion and policing to personal integrity on Friday, as a key Georgia contest that could help determine control of the Senate came to a head in a contentious televised debate. Walker, a one-time football star and political novice backed by former President Donald Trump, sought to brand the incumbent as a rubber stamp for Democratic President Joe Biden’s agenda, which Republicans have painted as responsible for inflation, crime and other social ills. Biden arrives in Oregon as Democratic hold on governorship is threatened U.S. President Joe Biden arrived in Oregon on Friday to rally support for the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, who is in danger of losing in a state where a Republican has not been elected governor since 1982. The race for the governorship pits Democrat Tina Kotek against Republican Christine Drazan and an independent candidate, Betsy Johnson, a former Democrat who is financially backed by Nike co-founder Phil Knight. All three women are former state legislators. Incumbent Governor Kate Brown, a Democrat, cannot run for re-election because of term limits. U.S. President Joe Biden to visit Philadelphia month-end – White House U.S. President Joe Biden will travel to Philadelphia on Oct. 28 for a reception hosted by the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, the White House said on Saturday. Biden would be accompanied by Vice President Kamala Harris. There were no further details. The visit would come ahead of the high-stakes Nov. 8 mid-term elections that would determine control of the U.S. Congress. Obama to stump for Democrats in three states ahead of high-stakes Nov. 8 election Former U.S. President Barack Obama will campaign for Democratic Party candidates in Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin later this month ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections that will determine control of the U.S. Congress. Obama will stump for candidates for federal and state offices, appearing in Atlanta on Oct. 28 before traveling to Detroit and Milwaukee on Oct. 29, his office said on Saturday. Raleigh shooting emergency callers tell of bodies, screams and gunshots Distressed callers who dialed 911 as a deadly shooting unfolded in Raleigh, North Carolina, last week described chilling scenes of bleeding bodies lying on the ground, screams and gunshots ringing out in a quiet neighborhood. Recordings of the calls released by Raleigh police late on Friday captured the fear and horror that gripped the streets of the city’s Hedingham neighborhood on Thursday, where authorities said a 15-year-old male suspect shot and killed five people, and was only apprehended after an hours-long manhunt. Biden takes aim at Big Pharma, Republicans in California U.S. President Joe Biden criticized Republicans and drug companies during a stop at a California community college on Friday as he campaigned for fellow Democrats in November’s midterm elections. Biden’s trip includes stops in California on Friday and Oregon on Saturday as the president looks to position his party, the Democrats, as a champion of consumers and lower healthcare costs at a time that inflation ranks among voters’ top concerns. The midterm elections are on Nov. 8. Justice Dept. asks court to end arbiter’s review of Trump documents The U.S. Justice Department on Friday asked an appeals court to end a third-party review of documents seized from Donald Trump’s Florida home, arguing that a judge should not have appointed an independent arbiter as the former president battles a criminal investigation into his handling of sensitive government records. At issue is the appointment of a special master by the Florida-based federal judge presiding over Trump’s legal effort to restrict access to documents seized by FBI agents during a court-approved Aug. 8 search of his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach. Former WSJ reporter says law firm used Indian hackers to sabotage his career A former Wall Street Journal reporter is accusing a major U.S. law firm of having used mercenary hackers to oust him from his job and ruin his reputation. In a lawsuit filed late Friday, Jay Solomon, the Journal’s former chief foreign correspondent, said Philadelphia-based Dechert LLP worked with hackers from India to steal emails between him and one of his key sources, Iranian American aviation executive Farhad Azima. 18-Year-Old Arrested After Teen Killed In Shooting On Subway In Queens https://digitalalaskanews.com/18-year-old-arrested-after-teen-killed-in-shooting-on-subway-in-queens/ FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens (WABC) — An 18-year-old was arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting death of a teen on the subway in Queens. Keyondre Russell, 18, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon after Jayjon Burnett, 15, was killed on Friday. Police say a single gunshot rang out on a southbound A train just before 3:45 p.m. Friday after a dispute broke out between two groups of teens. The bullet struck Burnett in the chest. A Good Samaritan escorted the teen off the train when it arrived at the Mott Avenue Station in Far Rockaway. Once on the platform, two transit bureau officers that were patrolling the station rushed over to the victim to render aid. EMS later arrived to perform CPR. The teen was taken to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. NYPD detectives are looking at MTA cameras and speaking to witnesses. “We’ve seen a lot this year where disputes quickly lead to verbal arguments and quickly lead to physical disputes confrontations that unfortunately have led to violence,” said NYPD Transit Bureau Chief Jason Wilcox. Police sources say they are looking into a gang component to the shooting, and they stress it was not a random act of violence. Service on the A train was suspended between Far Rockaway-Mott Ave and Broad Channel in both directions during the investigation. The shooting death is the eighth person killed in the transit system this year. WNCC Women Earn Sweep Over Lamar https://digitalalaskanews.com/wncc-women-earn-sweep-over-lamar/ LAMAR, Colo. – The 5th-ranked Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team made short work of Lamar Community College Saturday in a Region IX South Sub-Region conference contest as the Cougars improved to 26-3 on the season with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 over the Lopes. The Cougars captured the win in a little over an hour as everyone got a chance to play and put up some sort of statistic. Eleven different players picked up a kill in the win while another 11 had at least one service point. Erica Fava paced the offense with 10 kills while also tallying three digs and just one point. Ale Meoni and Jenna Curtis each had six kills while Emmalei Mapu had five kills. Meoni also had two digs while Curtis had five digs. Shanelle Martinez finished with 12 points with nine digs, two kills, and 34 set assists, while AK Chavez had 10 points with three aces, and six digs. Megan Bewley also tallied seven points, while Alex Hernandez and Charli Blackman each had four points. The match was one where WNCC trailed just once in the contest and that was 1-0 after a missed serve to start the set. Other than that, WNCC led 99.9% of the time with just three ties, two in the second set at 1-1 and 2-2 and once in the third at 1-1. The first set saw Martinez start the match with two points with two kills from Fava for a 3-0 lead. WNCC led 11-4 after two Hernandez points and then led 16-6 on two Martinez points. WNCC went up 21-7 on four Chavez points and won the first set 25-11 as Curtis tattooed a kill for the set winner. The second set was back and forth to start as Lamar led 1-0 and trailed just 5-4 and later 7-5. That was when WNCC started heating up as Hernandez had two service points followed by three points from Blackman for a 14-6 lead. WNCC kept going as Martinez added six points for a 21-8 lead and Jayla Brehmer served the final point for the 25-10 win. The third set started out at 1-1 before Chavez added two points for a 4-1 lead and then Bewley had six points to push the score to 13-4. WNCC just kept going as the Cougars controlled the pace of the game. WNCC won the match as Blackman hammered down a kill and then Blackman served the final point while Angel Nahinu got the final kill. Other players in the contest with good performances saw Blackman finish with two kills and four points; Maya Angelova had two kills; Paige Nakanelua had three digs; and Nahinu had two kills. WNCC 26-3, will be back at home next week for a big conference showdown with Northeastern Junior College on Friday at 7 p.m. The winner of that contest will earn the top seed from the South for the Region IX tournament that begins in November. Friday’s contest is also Homecoming as well as PAWzitively Pink Breast Cancer Awareness night. Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox! Read More Here

Evin Prison Fire: Gun Shots And Sirens Heard At Iran's Notorious Detention Centre https://digitalalaskanews.com/evin-prison-fire-gun-shots-and-sirens-heard-at-irans-notorious-detention-centre/ Media caption, Iran prison fire: Gunshots and sirens heard on videos By Alex Binley & Elsa Maishman BBC News A major fire has broken out at Iran’s notorious Evin prison, known for housing political prisoners, journalists and foreign nationals. Videos shared online show flames and smoke at the site in Tehran, and gunshots and explosions can be heard. An official quoted by state media said the situation was under control, but video footage appeared to show the fire continuing after this. Iran has been gripped for weeks by anti-government protests. They first erupted last month after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian Mahsa Amini in police custody. Officials said she died of a heart attack, but her family disputed this, saying she was beaten by morality police. BBC Persian’s Rana Rahimpour said it is not yet known whether the situation at the prison is linked to the recent demonstrations. But this could easily be the case, Rana said, as hundreds of the protesters have been sent to Evin. State media has suggested the two are not linked, quoting an official who blamed “criminal elements” for the fire. In a video posted on social media by anti-government monitoring group 1500tasvir, chants of “death to the dictator” – one of the main slogans of the anti-government protest movement – could be heard coming from outside the prison. Another video appears to show objects being fired into the prison from outside its perimeter, and an explosion is then heard, according to BBC Persian. Iranian media, which is strictly controlled by the government, reported that the riot started with financial and criminal prisoners, and that no political prisoners were involved. Eight people had been injured, it said. Speaking from inside the prison, Tehran’s governor told state TV that the riot was in a wing of the prison housing petty criminals and the situation was now completely calm. However, the situation at the prison is still confused, reports BBC Persian’s Kasra Naji. Videos continue to be posted on social media showing the fire still burning and the sound of gunfire heard around the prison. Other pictures show inmates on the roof of a section of the prison where political prisoners and many of the protestors who have been arrested in the past four weeks are kept, Kasra said. The families of some prisoners told the BBC that they were unable to contact their relatives on the phone, which they would normally be able to do, and that internet connection around the prison appeared to have been cut off. The streets leading to the prison were closed. Earlier, videos showed riot police entering Evin. There were also reports that special forces had been deployed to the area. A witness told Reuters news agency that ambulances were also there. Image source, Twitter Image caption, Images posted online appear to show a fire at Evin prison. British-Iranian dual nationals Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori were both held at Evin prison for several years on spying charges, which they denied, before their release earlier this year. The prison has long been criticised by Western rights groups. Human Rights Watch has accused authorities at the prison of using threats of torture and of indefinite imprisonment, as well as lengthy interrogations and denial of medical care for detainees. A group of hackers calling themselves Edalat-e Ali (Ali’s Justice) posted videos in August last year of leaked surveillance footage from Evin prison showing guards beating or mistreating inmates. Image source, Shutterstock Image caption, A person places a candle during a demonstration in solidarity with the protesters. Some foreign governments whose citizens are being held in the prison have expressed concern. A spokesperson for the US state department said it was following events with “urgency”, while the UK Government’s security minister called it a “very worrying development”. Since the death of Ms Amini five weeks ago, a wave of protests has swept across Iran in the boldest challenge to the Islamic Republic since its establishment in 1979. Many of those who have died have been teenagers. Read More Here

Rally Attempt Reels After Just One Day; 5 Growth Stocks To Watch
Rally Attempt Reels After Just One Day; 5 Growth Stocks To Watch https://digitalalaskanews.com/rally-attempt-reels-after-just-one-day-5-growth-stocks-to-watch/ Dow Jones futures will open on Sunday evening, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures. X The main indexes had a wild week, with the major indexes breaking to bear market lows before rebounding powerfully on Thursday despite a hot inflation report. Stocks resumed selling Friday as Treasury yields powered higher. While a market rally attempt is still ongoing, the major indexes are all in major downtrends. Stocks that flash buy signals or set up, suddenly crack. Investors should remain cautious until the market shows real signs of strength. Tesla (TSLA) and Netflix (NFLX) headline earnings in the coming week. TSLA stock has tumbled to 52-week lows. NFLX stock has set up in a bottoming base, but faces significant overhead resistance. Meanwhile, Shockwave Medical (SWAV), Wolfspeed (WOLF), Aehr Test Systems (AEHR), Albemarle (ALB) and Digi International (DGII) are growth stocks that are holding up reasonably well, but are not yet in position amid the current weak market. All have suffered damage in recent days, including Friday. They could break decisively lower if the market shows further weakness. But, if the market strengthens, these could be notable winners. Dow Jones Futures Today Dow Jones futures open at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures. Remember that overnight action in Dow futures and elsewhere doesn’t necessarily translate into actual trading in the next regular stock market session. Join IBD experts as they analyze actionable stocks in the stock market rally on IBD Live Stock Market Last Week The stock market sold off to fresh bear market lows, rebounded, and then started sliding again in volatile weekly action. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.2% in last week’s stock market trading. The S&P 500 index slid 1.5%. The Nasdaq composite tumbled 3.1%. The small-cap Russell 2000 fell 1%. The 10-year Treasury yield leapt 13 basis points to 4.01%, extending the weekly winning streak to 11 weeks. The 10-year Treasury yield hit a 14-year high of 4.06% on Thursday. The two-year Treasury yield, more closely tied to Fed policy and where rates may be headed, surged to 4.5%. U.S. crude oil futures fell 6.8% to $86.40 a barrel last week. Natural gas prices slumped 3.8%. Among the best ETFs, the Innovator IBD 50 ETF (FFTY) slumped 3.6% last week, while the Innovator IBD Breakout Opportunities ETF (BOUT) rose 1.3%. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) tumbled 5.7% while the VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) plunged 8.2%, both to fresh two-year lows. SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF (XME) declined 3.1% last week. The Global X U.S. Infrastructure Development ETF (PAVE) sank 1.5%. U.S. Global Jets ETF (JETS) ascended 5.75%. SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) lost 4.2%. The Energy Select SPDR ETF (XLE) gave up 1.9% and the Financial Select SPDR ETF (XLF) edged up 0.4%. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced nearly 1%. Reflecting more-speculative story stocks, ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) tumbled 9.4% last week, on the cusp of breaking below its March 2020 Covid crash low. ARK Genomics ETF (ARKG) dived 7.1%, still above its June lows. TSLA stock is the top holding across Ark Invest’s ETFs. Five Best Chinese Stocks To Watch Now Stocks To Watch SWAV stock tried to bounce back for most of last week, but rose in light volume. On Friday, shares reversed hard from the 50-day line, closing down 7.6%. Shockwave stock is still above its September lows, holding in a consolidation with a 315 buy point. A decisive move above the 50-day line could trigger an early buy point from a downsloping trendline. While SWAV stock has been volatile, the relative strength line is holding right at highs. WOLF stock also hit resistance at the 50-day line Friday, plunging to near Thursday’s low, which was well below prior trading from the past two months. The EV-focused chipmaker is nearing a 200-day line, with a decisive break possible. If Wolfspeed finds support and rebounds, it could soon have a new base. AEHR stock tumbled back below its 50-day line on Friday, capping a tough week. The EV-focused chip-gear maker spiked higher in the prior week amid blowout earnings, offering an early entry in a consolidation. The official buy point is 19.53. Clearing the Oct. 10 high of 17.61 could offer an aggressive entry. ALB stock plunged nearly 13% for the week, amid market weakness and analyst expectations that lithium prices, at record highs, will fall substantially. A week ago, Albemarle stock was on the cusp of buy signals. Now, ALB stock must hold its 200-day line. DGII stock surged to a record high on Oct. 6, but has sold off since then. On Thursday, the networking play plunged far below its 50-day line, but rallied to close almost flat. But with stocks tumbling again Friday, Digi International fell back toward Thursday’s losses. DGII stock needs time to forge a new base, but its strong growth and RS line make it worth watching. How This Tech Leader Tuned Up A Six-Quarter Sales Spree Netflix Subscriber Shift Netflix earnings are due Tuesday night, but analysts and investors will be focused on subscribers. They’ll especially be interested in Netflix’s subscriber outlook. Last week, Netflix announced that its ad-support tier will launch Nov. 3, priced at $6.99 a month. Netflix stock has forged a bottoming base after crashing from mid-November to mid-May. Shares are trading around the 50-day line, but still below a fast-falling 200-day. The buy point is 252.09. That’s only slightly above the top of NFLX stock’s earnings gap down on April 20, signaling a lot of overhead resistance there. Tesla Earnings Tesla earnings are set for Wednesday night. Analysts expect a 53% EPS gain with revenue up 62% to $22.28 billion. But investors will likely be interested in future growth prospects. Q3 deliveries hit a record 343,800, but that was well below estimates of roughly 360,000, and some 22,000 vehicles below what Tesla produced in the quarter. China backlogs have fallen significantly for the not-so-fresh Model 3 and Y, while competition is heating up dramatically. With Shanghai production set to increase significantly, will Tesla be able to export the bulk of that increase in Q4 and beyond? Or will the EV giant start cutting prices, after raising them substantially over the past two years? Meanwhile, investors will want to get new hints about the Cybertruck and any other future products. Elon Musk recently tweeted that Tesla Semi production has begun, but in what quantity? There are still many questions about Semi prices, costs and key specs. Tesla stock fell significantly for a fourth straight week, finally undercutting its May low to the worst levels in 16 months. Admittedly, it’s not a good time for most growth stocks, especially EV makers. TSLA stock, down over 50% from its November 2021 peak, needs a lot of repair work. Tesla Vs. BYD: Which EV Giant Is The Better Buy? Stock Market Analysis The Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all hit bear market lows last week. On Thursday, they rebounded powerfully from steep intraday losses following a hot inflation report. But on Friday, the major indexes gave back much or all of the prior day’s gain, though they remained above Thursday’s lows. The Dow Jones, which retook its 21-day moving average on Thursday, fell back Friday. The S&P 500 and Russell 2000 hit resistance at that short-term level, which also coincides with the top of a downsloping trendline. The Nasdaq never approached its 21-day, stumbling at the 10-day line. For the week, the Dow Jones rose, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq retreated. A market rally attempt is still ongoing, but hasn’t done anything yet to suggest a true bottom has been set. It’s hard to see a sustained market rally taking hold while Treasury yields are rising and the Federal Reserve is tightening aggressively. The 10-year yield is at 13-year highs, above 4%. Fed rate hike forecasts rose further this past week amid the hot inflation data. This past week included positive market reaction to U.K. government actions as well as the early start to earnings season. But the coming weeks will see a deluge of earnings that could roil the market as well as individual stocks and sectors. There are a number of medical and energy stocks that are holding up well, including Eli Lilly (LLY), Humana (HUM), Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX), Cardinal Health (CAH), Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Devon Energy (DVN). Most growth stocks are heavily damaged, including Tesla. Even names such as Shockwave and DGII stock are prone to sharp sell-offs just as they’re setting up. Time The Market With IBD’s ETF Market Strategy What To Do Now Investors need to be patient and preparing for tomorrow. While big rebounds like Thursday are exciting and raise the possibility of a market bottom, a lot more evidence is needed to suggest that’s the case. Even if the market rally gains steam and stages a follow-through day, that’s not a signal to push all your chips in. A FTD could fail quickly, or the uptrend could simply be another short-term tradable rally within the bear market. Investors should focus on preparing for the next uptrend. Looking for stocks holding in bases above their 50-day line is great. But also track relatively strong stocks with damaged charts. Obama Headed To Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin As Vote Nears https://digitalalaskanews.com/obama-headed-to-georgia-michigan-wisconsin-as-vote-nears-2/ By Associated Press Published: October 15, 2022, 4:13pm FILE – Former President Barack Obama speaks about the Affordable Care Act, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, April 5, 2022. Obama is headed to Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin in the final days of the campaign to give a boost to Democrats running for governor, senator and on down the ballot. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File) WASHINGTON — Former President Barack Obama is headed to Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin in the closing days of the 2022 campaign to give a boost to Democrats running for governor, senator and on down the ballot. He goes first to Atlanta, where Stacey Abrams is taking on Republican Gov. Brian Kemp on Nov. 8. She lost a close race to him in 2018. As in 2020, Georgia also may once again decide which party controls the Senate. Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock is facing a challenge from Republican Herschel Walker, a football star making his first bid for public office. After campaigning in Atlanta on Oct. 28, Obama plans stops the following day in Detroit and Milwaukee for events to help get out the vote. In Michigan, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is running against Tudor Dixon, a onetime commentator for a conservative online program who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Michigan voters also are deciding whether to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. In Wisconsin, Democratic Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes is trying to unseat Republican Sen. Ron Johnson and become the state’s first Black senator. Barnes, who is from Milwaukee, the state’s largest city and home to the largest group of African American voters, has been trying to energize Black voters in a race that a Marquette University Law School poll this past week showed Johnson with an apparent lead. Obama also hopes to give a boost to Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who is being challenged by Tim Michels, a construction company co-owner who is endorsed by Trump. Marquette polls for months have shown that race to be about even. Read More Here

A Liberty Medal For President Zelenskyy
A Liberty Medal For President Zelenskyy
A Liberty Medal For President Zelenskyy https://digitalalaskanews.com/a-liberty-medal-for-president-zelenskyy/ By The Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial Board This appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia plans to award the Liberty Medal to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy next month for his “heroic defense of liberty in the face of Russian tyranny.” It is difficult to imagine anyone more deserving of this honor. Zelenskyy has emerged as a Winston Churchill of our time, showing that true leadership is about an unfaltering commitment to democracy and independence in the face of violence and authoritarianism. The world was reminded of that as Russia ramped up its reckless and inhuman bombing of civilian targets across Ukraine this week. Zelenskyy, as he has done since the start of Russia’s unprovoked invasion, was strong and defiant, telling his citizens Monday night that “Ukraine cannot be intimidated.” On Tuesday, Zelenskyy joined a virtual emergency meeting of G7 leaders where he pleaded for better air defense systems — which must be provided without delay. Zelenskyy’s fearlessness has inspired his fellow citizens to mount a valiant defense of their homeland. As a result, the vaunted Russian military has been repeatedly humiliated. Zelenskyy has been aided, of course, by strong support from the United States and other NATO members across Europe. President Joe Biden has led the effort to unite the Western coalition and send Ukraine billions of dollars in military aid. While the war may seem disconnected to many here, the outcome in Ukraine will impact the future of Europe and the United States, as Inquirer Worldview columnist Trudy Rubin documented during her trip there this summer. As one group of volunteers told Rubin during her trip: “They” — the Ukrainians — “are fighting so we” — the rest of the world — “do not have to.” As we get closer to the Nov. 8 election, it is important to keep in mind how different events here and abroad would have played out if Donald Trump had won in 2020. Trump remains mysteriously in the thrall of Russian President Vladimir Putin and spent much of his one term as president criticizing NATO. Trump also tried to shake down Zelenskyy by trying to withhold $400 million in military aid in return for dirt on Biden — leading to Trump’s first impeachment. And recall that Trump called Putin a “genius” after he invaded Ukraine in February. Given that, it is hard to envision Trump objecting to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Would Trump have looked away at the atrocious war crimes Russia has committed in Ukraine? Would the U.S. have sent Ukraine more than $15 billion in military aid so far? Would NATO be as united, let alone expanding? Trump began cozying up to Putin as far back as 2013, tweeting that the Russian dictator would be his new best friend if Putin attended the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. Trump’s fawning over Putin continued throughout his presidency. Recall the infamous press conference in Helsinki in 2018 when Trump sided with Putin over the assessment of U.S. intelligence agencies that found Russia meddled in the election. The late Sen. John McCain, R.-Ariz., called it “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.” The mild-mannered Sen. Bob Casey, D.-Pa., said Trump “shamed the office of the presidency.” America’s standing in the free world was likewise diminished under Trump, who demeaned allies and praised dictators. Biden, by contrast, has tried to repair the damage and declared that “America is back.” But Trump and his allies are still lurking. Scores of election deniers who have worked to undermine democracy in America are on the ballot next month, including at least 10 in Pennsylvania. They include congressional candidates Aaron Bashir, Jim Bognet, John Joyce, Mike Kelly, Dan Meuser, Scott Perry, Guy Reschenthaler, Lloyd Smucker, Glenn “GT” Thompson, and the Republican gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano. Trump himself is toying with running for president again in 2024. Some fear if Republicans take control of Congress, support for Ukraine — and democracy in general — could soften. Zelenskyy is set to receive the Liberty Medal on Nov. 7. The following day is Election Day — where the future of democracy, both in Ukraine and in the United States, hangs in the balance. It’s also her first LET win since 2011. “I’ve been working extremely hard on my game,” Thompson said. “I felt like it was a matter of time but just wanted to play golf and put myself in contention in the final rounds and learn from the losses that I had and what I needed to work on, and kind of brought that into today.” Korda never got anything going on Saturday, bogeying three of her first six holes before a back-nine rally brought her back into a tie for fourth, behind Madelene Sagstrom and Brooke Henderson, who shot 69 and 68, respectively, to share second. Thompson birdied her opening hole, but made a couple of bogeys to make the turn still at eight under for the week, where she started the final round. She birdied four of the next eight holes to put the win on ice. “I wanted to play fearless golf and not play away from pins by any means and commit to my shots,” she said. “I hit some really good ones and I hit some iffy ones but with this wind and everything, you have to take the bad ones as best you can.” As its name implies, the Armaco event also features a 36-hole team competition, which was won on Friday by the squad of Johanna Gustavsson, Jessica Karlsson, Karolin Lampert and former Tulane and UNC-Charlotte golfer and New York native, amateur Jennifer Rosenberg. Of the format, Thompson said, “Golf is an individual sport and we don’t [often] get to play as a team and with an amateur at that.” Still, this week Thompson did just fine on her own. aramcoteamseries lexithompson womensgolf Related Articles Read More Here

Vikings Defense, Run Game Shines In Win Over Tigers https://digitalalaskanews.com/vikings-defense-run-game-shines-in-win-over-tigers/ VALLEY CITY, ND  (NewsDakota.com)  A week after a brutal three turnover barrage that led to 22 straight fourth-quarter points for the opposition, the Vikings were hungry for a different tone Saturday. That tone was set on the first snap, and it never changed. Lineman Georgia Mageo (Fr., Anchorage, AK) grabbed a batted screen pass out of mid air, turning over Iowa Wesleyan on their opening offensive play and setting up a 24-yard scoring drive, the start of a 32-0 Valley City State University win at Lokken Stadium. Justice Bice (Jr., Bonifay, FL) capped the drive and started a 94-yard, two-score day with an 11-yard touchdown run just 1:41 into the game.  Bice would later score the game’s final touchdown late in the fourth quarter, capping the scoring and moving the Vikings to 2-4 overall, 1-1 in North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) play. The Vikings would score twice on turnovers, the second score coming after linebacker Jahidi West (Jr., Stockton, CA) snared a throw from Tiger backup quarterback Gavin Esquivel and returned to the Wesleyan 18-yard-line.  West had an impressive day, moving from linebacker to cornerback against a Tiger offense that regularly plays four receivers.  He earned Ivy Real Estate Group Player of the Game honors for an effort that include the pick and 28-yard return, two additional breakups, and six tackles. Runningback Taylor Simmons (So, McCleary, WA) ran in from 15 yards after West’s interception, pushing the lead to 25-0 with 6:26 left in the third quarter, effectively sealing the day behind a Viking defense that allowed only 19 yards of total offense to the Tigers in the first half, and only 43 yards rushing on the day.  Simmons finished the day with 73 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Noah Chambers (Fr., Juneau, AK) continued his steady improvement in a season that has called on him to take the starters role due to the injury of Avery Thorsgard.  Chambers ran for 62 yards on 11 carries, including a 13-yard score in the opening quarter.  He also completed seven of 11 throws for 72 yards. The Vikings travel to Waldorf University next Saturday in Forest City, IA. Read More Here

Kanye West Canceled? Here’s Why It Probably Won’t Happen – WTOP News https://digitalalaskanews.com/kanye-west-canceled-heres-why-it-probably-wont-happen-wtop-news/ Kanye West has had so many controversies you may have forgotten a few. From his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards to his early embrace of former President Trump and his “Make America Great Again” agenda, the artist, designer and entrepreneur is, perhaps, best known for being a provocateur. The latest calls to cancel West, who legally changed his name to Ye, may be the most intense yet. After he wore and featured “White Lives Matter” (The Anti-Defamation League categorizes the phrase as a “hate slogan” used by White supremacist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan) apparel in his recent Paris fashion show, there was new outcry against West. “Kanye’s actions are just so dangerous and irresponsible. I don’t care how great his music is, we have to stop supporting someone who uses their platform so irresponsibly,” TV host, professor and former CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill posted on social media. Another lightening rod came earlier this week, when West’s Twitter and Instagram accounts were restricted for violating policies following posts that were criticized as antisemitic. Days later, it was announced that his episode of the YouTube series “The Shop: Uninterrupted” would not release because he used his appearance “to reiterate more hate speech and very ugly stereotypes.” This has led some to suggest that West’s career has crashed and burned and there’s no coming back from it all. But here’s why that’s not necessarily the case: Sign of the times For all the talk of “cancel culture,” we now live in an era where bad behavior, especially by public figures, garners all of the outrage – until it doesn’t. Not only do we live in a society that moves fairly quickly from scandal to scandal, racism and cruelty to others no longer live in the shadows. So while plenty of people have condemned West for his actions and comments, there are many who support both because they agree with him. Then there is the fame factor. Star power has only increased in recent years, especially because social media fosters a sense of intimacy between artists and their followers. “West’s celebrity status has kept us watching and listening mostly because we’re keenly aware that so many others are also paying attention,” Washington Post senior critic-at-large Robin Givhan recently wrote. “And each time he says something indecipherable or cruel, we recoil as if we are shocked anew, as if he has not been terrible before,” she continued. “We respond as if we believe that fame is a preventive to terrible behavior, that those who know they’re being watched will aim to be on their best behavior rather than using all that attention as an enticement to acting out.” The Trump effect West has been very clear about his admiration for Trump, and the two men do seem to share an approach to communication. West recently said in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson that he “started to really feel this need to express myself on another level when Trump was running for office and I liked him.” West said he was warned against supporting Trump, telling Carlson people told him “my career would be over, my life would be over.” Instead, West earned new fans from some of the same people who also support the former president. After conservative author and ACT! for America founder Brigitte Gabriel tweeted her support for West, one of her followers responded, “I used to judge him quite harshly. I’m finding new respect for him now.” The art versus the artist It’s long been debated whether one can embrace the art without supporting the artist. West has a history of coming out on the winning side of that question. There were calls to boycott West in 2018 after comments he made about the history of slavery in the United States. “When you hear about slavery for 400 years,” West said during an interview with TMZ. “For 400 years? That sounds like a choice.” Yet, a month later, all seven tracks on his “Ye” album debuted on Billboard’s Top 40 chart. There have been several other controversies since that have not stopped West from achieving mass success with his fashion and sneaker lines. And while West terminated his relationship with the Gap in September, and Adidas has put their partnership with him under review, he entered the public consciousness nearly two decades ago through music that people will likely continue to return to. The first words West speaks on his first hit, “Through the Wire,” in retrospect, may have been prescient: “They can’t stop me from rapping can they?” This content was republished with permission from CNN. Analyst: Trump’s Bluster Will Not Carry Him In 2024 https://digitalalaskanews.com/analyst-trumps-bluster-will-not-carry-him-in-2024/ An American political analyst and activist says if there is a bevy of Republican candidates in 2024, Donald Trump’s bluster and persona will not carry him the way it did in 2016. Myles Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, said in an interview with Press TV on Saturday that some Republican challengers might develop a spine and take Trump on. Former US House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday predicted that Trump will lose if he decides to run again for the White House in 2024.  The former Speaker added that Trump’s “unelectability will be palpable” by the 2024 presidential election and that the next Republican nominee will likely be someone else.  “I think Trump’s unelectability will be palpable by then. We all know that he will lose. … We all know that he is so much more likely to lose the White House than anybody else running for president on our side of the aisle, so why would we want to go with that?” Ryan said in an interview with Teneo for its “Insights Series.” Ryan said that Trump is the Democrats’ weapon against Republicans. “He’s a cudgel against us, especially in our swing districts.” Hoenig said, “Two years is a lifetime in politics. In one two-year period one could experience a meteoric rise, as someone like Tulsi Gabbard did. But in two years one could drop precipitously, such as Joe Lieberman or Howard Dean. Trump is likely no exception and former House Leader Ryan is correct in projecting Trump as no longer relevant within the party. If there is a bevy of Republican candidates in 2024, Trump’s bluster and insults and persona will not carry him the way it did in 2016.” “If Trump brags about any of his accomplishments, there’ll be plenty of candidates who would be ‘brave’ enough’ to argue about it. If he resorts to his usual name-calling, his immaturity will be exposed and no longer cheered on. It will actually be embarrassing for many who were once his supporters. Some of his opponents might even develop a spine for the moment, as Ted Cruz was emasculated by Trump on the campaign trail yet with Cruz hovelling before him afterwards,” he added. “What cannot be predicted, though, is the future. What will happen with all the investigations, likely indictments, and perhaps the end of his empire? If he does announce that he’s running it will likely be because of these troubles and it will serve as a political weapon for him. But even the ‘Donald’ may not be able to fight the numerous legal and financial troubles and run for president simultaneously. Candidates have run for office while serving jail time like Eugene V. Debs, but no president has been incarcerated in a state jail while holding office. The only pardon could come from the governor of the state. Georgia would likely have a Republican governor but not New York,” he noted. “For now, the only hope for Trump to escape all these existential problems would be to get on his private jet, before it’s repossessed, and fly to a non-extradition country. In 2024, the aura around him would likely be as bright as a 40-watt bulb,” he concluded. Read More Here

Trump Jr. Imagines Massive Conspiracy Over J6 Video Of Nancy Pelosi
Trump Jr. Imagines Massive Conspiracy Over J6 Video Of Nancy Pelosi https://digitalalaskanews.com/trump-jr-imagines-massive-conspiracy-over-j6-video-of-nancy-pelosi/ Donald Trump, Jr. on Saturday said he expected backlash after voicing his thoughts on the videos of Speaker Nancy Pelosi during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The videos were shot by Alexandra Pelosi, the Speaker’s documentary filmmaker daughter. Excerpts were played during Thursday’s public hearing by the House Select Committee Investigating the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol. “CNN obtained roughly an hour of additional material that wasn’t presented by the panel,” the network reported. “The footage, obtained exclusively by CNN, shows in vivid new detail how congressional leaders fled the US Capitol on January 6 and transformed a nearby military base into a command center, where they frantically coordinated with Vice President Mike Pence and Trump Cabinet members to quell the insurrection and finish certifying the 2020 election.” In one clip, Pelosi discusses reporters that Trump wanted to join the rioters at the U.S. Capitol. “I hope he comes up here, I’m going to punch him out,” Pelosi said. “I’ve been waiting for this — for trespassing on the Capitol grounds.” “I’m going to punch him out, I’m going to go to jail, and I’m going to be happy,” the San Francisco Democrat said. Trump Jr. apparently did not like the videos, which show Democrats seeking to protect Congress during the 179 minutes while Donald Trump failed to act, while reportedly watching the violence unfold on Fox News. “So Nancy Pelosi refuses Trump’s request for a national guard presence on Jan 6 & simultaneously has a documentary film crew in her office where are you can hear her poorly delivered tough guy act… I’m sure I’ll be called conspiracy theorist for thinking this isn’t a coincidence!” Trump, Jr. posted to Truth Social. “It’s all so f*cking fake stop buying into the bullsh*t!” he added. In a subsequent post he wrote, “conspiracy theorists are just people capable of pattern recognition.” Watch below or at this link: Alexandra Pelosi www.youtube.com Read More Here

Elon Musk Drops Threat To Halt Internet Service In Ukraine
Elon Musk Drops Threat To Halt Internet Service In Ukraine https://digitalalaskanews.com/elon-musk-drops-threat-to-halt-internet-service-in-ukraine/ Image Elon Musk announced on Twitter on Saturday that his company would continue to provide internet service to Ukraine.Credit…Matt Rourke/Associated Press Elon Musk, the billionaire chief executive of SpaceX, abruptly reversed himself on Saturday, saying that his company would continue to fund the operation of the Starlink internet service in Ukraine, where it has become a digital lifeline for both soldiers and civilians. Mr. Musk, the world’s richest man, drew criticism on Friday when he said on Twitter that his company could not “indefinitely” fund Ukraine’s use of Starlink. The service has been crucial for the Ukrainian army’s communication as it advances into territory occupied by Russia and defends against continued Russian attacks. CNN reported that SpaceX had sent a letter to the Pentagon last month asking it to take over the funding of Ukraine’s use of Starlink, which is built and operated by SpaceX. But on Saturday, Mr. Musk changed course, again posting his decision on Twitter. “The hell with it,” he wrote. He added that “even though Starlink is still losing money” and “other companies are getting billions” in tax dollars, “we’ll just keep funding” the Ukrainian government for free. The hell with it … even though Starlink is still losing money & other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we’ll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 15, 2022 Mr. Musk had helped provide Ukraine with access to the service after Russia invaded in February. About 20,000 Starlink terminals, which were designed to work with satellites orbiting in space to provide online access, have been delivered to Ukraine. It is not completely clear who is footing the bill for the service. A document obtained by The New York Times showed that as of September, Starlink terminals had been funded in part by three Western governments: the United States, the United Kingdom and Poland. The document showed that whereas SpaceX donated about 3,000 terminals to Ukraine, other governments and allies provided funds for nearly 17,000. Mr. Musk has previously said that SpaceX is footing the monthly bill for the service that is streamed to the terminals. Earlier this month, Mr. Musk said the operation in Ukraine had cost SpaceX $80 million. On Friday, he added that “burn” for the project, which refers to the money spent by SpaceX, was about $20 million a month. As of July, the Ukrainian army was using about 4,000 of the mobile terminals. That month, the army requested an additional 6,700 from SpaceX but has yet to receive them. Mr. Musk’s Starlink comments come more than a week after he drew a fierce rebuke from Ukrainian officials for proposing a peace plan — which included ceding territory to Russia — to end the war. Two volunteers who had joined the Russian army opened fire on their fellow soldiers at a training camp in the Belgorod region on Saturday, killing 11 and wounding 15, before being killed themselves, according to Russian state-run news outlets. The Russian Defense Ministry called the episode a terrorist attack, according to RIA Novosti and TASS, which quoted a ministry statement. The account of the shootings could not be verified independently. The statement from the ministry said the two volunteers were from an unnamed ex-Soviet nation and fired on other soldiers during target practice at a firing range, RIA Novosti reported. Law enforcement representatives are working on site, the statement said. The shootings come after President Vladimir V. Putin announced a large mobilization to shore up his faltering war effort in Ukraine, where the Ukrainian army has been recapturing territory in the east and south occupied by Russia. Mr. Putin has said at least 220,000 reservists have been called up. At least 16,000 of them have been deployed “in units that get involved in fulfilling combat tasks,” Mr. Putin told a news conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday, adding that he expects the mobilization to be completed within two weeks. Russian media has reported at least seven deaths among people who were recently drafted. Asked on Friday why some servicemen had died so soon after mobilization began, Mr. Putin said that in some cases training could take just 10 days. In late September, Mr. Putin acknowledged that there had been “mistakes” in how the Russian government had been carrying out his draft. He described cases of people entitled to deferments being wrongly drafted, such as fathers of many children, men with chronic diseases or those above military age. Ivan Nechepurenko contributed reporting. KYIV, Ukraine — The head conductor of Kherson’s top theater was killed in his home by Russian forces, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture, in what appeared to be the latest instance of Russian forces targeting dissenters in the occupied southern city. The conductor, Yurii Kerpatenko, who led orchestras at the Mykola Kulish Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater, was fatally shot after he refused to take part in an online day of music organized by Russian-backed local officials, Ukraine’s culture ministry said in a statement posted on Facebook on Saturday. The statement did not say when exactly Mr. Kerpatenko had been killed, only that the news was known on Friday. It is the only regional capital in Ukraine that is held by Russian forces. Ukrainian forces have been moving toward the city in recent weeks in an attempt to retake the region, placing the Russian troops and local officials under pressure. Earlier this week, the Russian-installed leader of the Kherson region, Volodymyr Saldo, urged civilians to evacuate, a move that Ukrainian officials called a sign of panic as Kyiv’s forces continued their biggest advance in the south since the war began. Yaroslav Yanushevich, the head of the Kherson regional military administration, said that Russian troops had shot the conductor in his own home “because of the man’s refusal to cooperate with the enemy.” He added that the regional prosecutor’s office was investigating the killing. It would not be the first time that someone in Kherson’s arts community had been targeted by Russian soldiers. In March, Oleksandr Knyga, a prominent director of the same theater where Mr. Kerpatenko worked, was kidnapped by Russian soldiers, before being released a short time later. The mayor of Kherson, Ihor Kolykhaev, was arrested in June, and a number of other residents and officials have been detained after speaking out against the Russian occupation. Mr. Kolykhaev had been posted regular updates on social media and had given interviews to Western journalists from the city. But the head of the United Nations’ atomic watchdog warned that Ukrainian workers were under yet more intense pressure as Moscow tries to assert further control of the plant. While Ukrainian engineers have continued to operate the plant under the watch of Russian soldiers, Moscow recently said it was nationalizing the facility. The effort is part of a broader bid to claim, in a parade of formalities designed to give the moves a sheen of legitimacy, that parts of Ukraine are now Russian. The nuclear plant sits in one of four Ukrainian provinces that President Vladimir V. Putin declared this month had been annexed to Russia — a move that has been widely rejected and condemned as illegal. Late Friday, Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in a statement that employees at the nuclear plant were now facing “unacceptable pressure” to sign employment contracts with the Russian nuclear energy company, Rosatom, in defiance of Kyiv. That pressure only adds to the stresses on the workers that Ukrainian officials have been warning about for months, saying that Russian soldiers had subjected already fatigued staff to harsh interrogations and torture. Holding the plant gives Moscow a military advantage but also significant leverage over Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Russian authorities could also, in theory, connect the facility to their grid, funneling power south to Ukrainian territory that Moscow has seized. Amid the continuing management struggle between Moscow and Kyiv, Ukraine’s nuclear power company said this week that Russia had kidnapped another senior official from the plant, expressing fears he could be forced to disclose information about Ukrainian personnel working there. The head of the plant had previously been detained and released. Ukraine’s state energy company, Energoatom, said on the Telegram messaging app on Saturday that it had set up a hotline for workers at the plant that could be used by “everyone who has information about cases of kidnapping and torture” by Russian authorities. Despite Russia’s claims to have nationalized the plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency says that it views the plant as Ukrainian, since the U.N. charter does not recognize illegal annexations. In a “much-needed development,” the Ukrainian engineers who have been working at the Zaporiz...
