Trump Thanks Ginni Thomas For Continuing To Believe 2020 Election Was Stolen After Jan 6 Committee Interview
Trump Thanks Ginni Thomas For Continuing To Believe 2020 Election Was Stolen After Jan 6 Committee Interview https://digitalarizonanews.com/trump-thanks-ginni-thomas-for-continuing-to-believe-2020-election-was-stolen-after-jan-6-committee-interview/ The wife of conservative US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas continues to falsely believe that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump, according to the House select committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol fuelled by the same lie. On his Truth Social platform on 30 September, the former president congratulated Ginni Thomas following her interview with the committee “for having the courage of her convictions” and believing that the election was “rigged and stolen”. “By the way, her husband is Great!” he wrote. Committee chair Bennie Thompson told reporters on Friday that Ms Thomas continues to cling to bogus election conspiracy theories, which she shared in texts and emails with White House officials and Trump allies in her efforts to reject the outcome. “She absolutely has a First Amendment right to take whatever positions she wants, and that means she can take as deranged a position she wants about the 2020 election,” Democratic US Rep Jamie Raskin told reporters. “I don’t expect anything more from her right-wing politics than I do of anybody else who is steeped in that cultish orthodoxy today.” Ms Thomas’s opening statement to the committee, obtained by The New York Times, claims that the couple maintain an “ironclad” agreement to avoid discussing cases in front of the nation’s high court. “It is laughable for anyone who knows my husband to think I could influence his jurisprudence – the man is independent and stubborn, with strong character traits of independence and integrity,” the right-wing activist said. Justice Thomas, however, was the only justice who opposed an order that would grant the committee access to hundreds of Trump White House documents – including text messages sent by Ms Thomas to Mr Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows. Those messages urged Mr Meadows to pursue efforts to overturn the results of the election, undermining and dismissing millions of Americans’ votes to seat Mr Trump for a second term. She also pressed state lawmakers to ignore Mr Biden’s victory and “choose” their own electors who are loyal to Mr Trump. This fall, the justices will weigh in on the validity of that right-wing conspiracy theory, promoted by Trump allies like John Eastman, whose radical and dubious legal arguments animated the former president’s attempts to toss out the 2020 election. According to the theory, partisan state legislators – not the courts – would have effective control over the electoral process. After elections analysts called the race for Mr Biden in Arizona in November 2020, Ms Thomas pressed 29 state lawmakers to reject the outcome, telling them in emails to “stand strong in the face of political and media pressure” and claiming that the responsibility to choose electors was “yours and yours alone.” They have the “power to fight back against fraud” and “ensure that a clean slate of Electors is chosen,” she wrote. Iranian Security Forces Arrest A Woman For Eating At Restaurant In Public Without Her Hijab, Family Says | CNN https://digitalarizonanews.com/iranian-security-forces-arrest-a-woman-for-eating-at-restaurant-in-public-without-her-hijab-family-says-cnn/ 02:49 – Source: CNN Protesters set fire to statue of symbolic Islamic figure CNN  —  Iranian security forces arrested a woman after a photo of her and another woman eating at a Tehran restaurant without their head scarves was widely circulated online, her family said Friday. The photo emerged Wednesday showing the two women having breakfast at a cafe that, like most coffeehouses in Iran, is traditionally patronized by men. One of the women in the photo, Donya Rad, was arrested shortly after the photo was published online. CNN spoke with her sister who said security agencies contacted Donya and summoned her to explain her actions. “After visiting the designated place she was arrested, after a few hours of no news, Donya told me in a short call that she was transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison,” her sister told CNN. Tehran’s Evin Prison is a notoriously brutal facility where the regime incarcerates political dissidents and is exclusively designated for prisoners managed by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry. CNN has reached out to Iranian authorities about the alleged arrests. In recent days, security forces have reportedly detained several influential Iranians, including writer and poet Mona Borzouei, Iranian football player Hossein Mahini, and the daughter of former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Faezeh Rafsanjani. Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour was also arrested this week after releasing a poignant song based on tweets shared by Iranians expressing sentiments of why people are protesting, according to NGO Iran Human Rights. Hajipour’s song “For…” went viral online, receiving millions of views and is being shared widely among Iranians both inside and outside of the country. On the cover of state-aligned newspaper Hamshahri daily on Thursday, the headline read “Celebrities of Disturbance” with a picture of former football player Ali Karimi standing alongside notable Iranian actors and actresses who have been vocal in supporting the protests. The article says they “are one of the main reasons for recent popular protests.” “We are not the ones causing the disturbances. We are a drop from the people,” Iranian Actor Ehsan Karamy said in an Instagram post addressing claims made by authorities. “Don’t mislead the people. Go after the hardliners who have provided the firewood for this fire piece by piece.” The government crackdown has continued after almost two weeks of protests, with dozens dying in clashes between security forces. Iran Human Rights estimates that at least 83 people including children, are confirmed to have been killed in protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. More than a thousand people connected to the protests have been detained as of last weekend, according to state news agency IRNA. At least 28 journalists arrested were arrested as of Thursday, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. 01:13 – Source: CNN Iranian women open up about hijab law and morality police Amnesty International on Thursday said they are “investigating the authorities carrying out mass arrests of protesters and bystanders, as well as journalists, political activists, lawyers, and human rights defenders, including women’s rights activists and those belonging to oppressed ethnic minority groups.” Despite the growing death toll and a fierce crackdown by authorities, videos circulating on social media show protestors calling for the fall of the clerical establishment in the cities of Qom, Rasht and Mashhad. CNN cannot independently verify arrest or detention claims. A precise number of protestors arrested or detained is impossible for those outside Iran’s government to confirm. Tips To Keep Your Relationship Solid During A Serious Illness
Tips To Keep Your Relationship Solid During A Serious Illness
Tips To Keep Your Relationship Solid During A Serious Illness https://digitalarizonanews.com/tips-to-keep-your-relationship-solid-during-a-serious-illness/ The Herald No matter how solid your relationship with your partner is, a serious illness like cancer or a chronic disease such as diabetes, arthritis or multiple sclerosis can add unexpected challenges. “The partner who’s sick may not feel the way they did before the illness. And the person who’s not sick may not know how to handle the changes. The strain may push both people’s understanding of ‘in sickness and in health’ to its breaking point,” said Rena Szabo, PsyD, psycho-oncology section director at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Centre at Banner Gateway Medical Centre in Gilbert, AZ.  In the face of a major illness, you might need to renegotiate roles, responsibilities, physical needs, emotional needs, intimacy needs and future plans. “It can be overwhelming,” Dr Szabo said. But keeping your relationship on solid ground is essential. “Relationships have the power to influence physical and mental health, for better or worse,” Dr Szabo said.  “They influence conditions such as cancer, heart disease, depression and addiction. They can affect endocrine function, immune function and nervous system activity. That evidence is leading health psychologists to say that strengthening bonds should be a public health priority.” Staying connected to your partner can be a source of support, validation and information. Your relationship can provide distraction, enjoyment and pleasure when you’re facing a serious illness. Tips for the person who is sick “Dealing with a serious illness can change your relationships with the people in your life,” Dr. Szabo said. “And chronic pain or illness can frustrate you, your friends and your family. How you and others respond to the stress of your condition can affect the quality of your relationships.” Here are ways you can keep your relationship with your partner strong: Remember, you are still you. This illness does not define you. Keep communication open — be open and honest. People only understand what you are thinking or feeling if you tell them. Express your needs, feelings, and ideas honestly and directly, without putting down or hurting others. Don’t lie about your symptoms. Use “I” statements to describe problems. That way, your partner doesn’t feel blamed or criticised, and you keep the focus on your needs and wants. Avoid endless complaining, which can be draining. Instead, talk about how you can change the parts of your life that are making you unhappy.  Adopt a positive outlook. Try to find humour in situations. Use honesty and transparency to foster closeness. Remember how you and your partner overcame difficult situations in the past and use those strategies now. Allow  room for a “time out.” Serious illnesses can cause feelings of anger and depression. Give yourself and your partner room to feel your emotions and take a moment alone. Remain  intimate. Intimacy does not necessarily mean sex. It means spending time together — holding hands, reading together, talking, etc. Find  time to do the things you love. Let others know what to expect of you as you heal — and what not to expect. Let go of guilt about not doing the same things or going to the same places. Be gentle with yourself. Commit to getting and staying emotionally and spiritually strong.  Tips for the partner of a person who is sick “Although your partner has a serious illness, the illness is really happening to both of you. Your life is disrupted in many of the same ways. You are sharing many of the same emotions and concerns,” Dr Szabo said. “It can be tremendously reassuring and comforting to your loved one to know that the two of you are facing the illness together and that your support and involvement will be steadfast and unwavering regardless of what happens.” Here are ways you can keep your relationship with your partner strong: Talk with your partner. Do not assume that you know what your partner is thinking or feeling or what they need from you. You might think your partner is scared when they feel sad or guilty. You might think your partner is strong and resilient when they feel vulnerable and dependent on you. Ask your partner what they need.  They may need practical support like going together to doctor’s appointments, becoming educated about their illness and treatment options, handling phone calls from friends and relatives, or taking over household chores. They may also need emotional support, like for you to be attuned and responsive to their feelings. Commit to getting and staying emotionally and spiritually strong.  Learn as much as you can about your partner’s illness. Support your partner’s true feelings. Most people feel pressure to maintain a positive mental attitude, and this pressure prevents them from expressing their true feelings. Your loved one probably has good reasons to be worried and upset, as well as to feel hopeful and optimistic. You should try to support and validate both sets of emotions, not only the positive ones. Confront sexual issues with open communication. Your partner may be facing a loss of libido, impotence, body image issues or depression. These changes in your partner can also cause you to lose interest. Watch for caregiver burnout. — Bannerhealth.com. Read: www.herald.co.zw Warning signs include withdrawal from friends and family, loss of interest in activities, feeling blue or irritable, changes in appetite or weight, changes in sleep patterns, getting sick more often, wanting to hurt yourself or the person you are caring for, or emotional and physical exhaustion.  If you notice these signs, seek professional help. Where can you find support? Ask your provider if there is an integrative health psychologist on your medical team who you can consult. It can be helpful to speak with an unbiased health psychologist, who is an expert in the intersection of health and behaviour and works with similar patients as a part of an integrated health care delivery team. You can also try: Disease/illness-specific organisations eg Cancer Association, Support groups, Family/couples counselling. The bot tomline -When you’re living with a serious illness, you and your partner should expect your relationship to change. By focusing on open and honest communication with each other as early as possible, you can keep your relationship strong through these challenging times.  — Bannerhealth.com. Read More Here

Trump Fraud Lawsuit Goes To Judge Who Held Him In Contempt
Trump Fraud Lawsuit Goes To Judge Who Held Him In Contempt https://digitalarizonanews.com/trump-fraud-lawsuit-goes-to-judge-who-held-him-in-contempt/ By MICHAEL R. SISAK, Associated Press Published: September 30, 2022, 2:58pm NEW YORK (AP) — The New York attorney general’s lawsuit accusing Donald Trump and his company of fraud has been assigned to a state court judge who repeatedly ruled against the former president in related subpoena disputes — including holding him in contempt, fining him $110,000 and forcing him to sit for a deposition. Trump’s lawyers are objecting to Manhattan Judge Arthur Engoron’s continued involvement and accused Attorney General Letitia James’ office of attempting to “judge shop” because, in paperwork seeking assignment of a judge, it noted Engoron’s knowledge of the case and linked the lawsuit and subpoena disputes as “related” matters. In a letter Thursday to the court’s administrative judge, Trump lawyer Alina Habba argued that the lawsuit should instead be assigned to the court’s Commercial Division, which is set up to handle complex corporate litigation. James’ office, which filed the lawsuit last week, is angling to get the case to trial by the end of next year — before the first primaries in the 2024 presidential election. In a response, it said the case should remain with Engoron in part because of “the level of familiarity” he’s developed in handling discovery and subpoena issues in the underlying investigation. “Given the fact that this action involves allegations of an ongoing scheme and conspiracy to obtain millions of dollars through fraudulent activity, and that defendants repeatedly have sought to delay the conclusion of (James’ investigation), it is imperative that this case proceed quickly,” Wallace wrote. A court spokesperson said Engoron had no comment. James’ lawsuit alleges Trump and the Trump Organization inflated his net worth by billions of dollars and misled banks and others for years about the value of prized assets like golf courses, hotels and his Mar-a-Lago estate. She is seeking $250 million and a permanent ban on Trump doing business in the state. Trump’s three eldest children, Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric Trump, were also named as defendants, along with two longtime company executives. A lawyer for Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump sent a letter Thursday to the administrative judge echoing Habba’s call to move the case to the court’s Commercial Division. Engoron, a Democrat, has been involved in Trump-related cases since 2020, when he was assigned to intervene in quarrels among Trump’s lawyers and James’ office over demands for evidence and the direction of her investigation. Trump, a Republican who’s been laying groundwork for a potential comeback campaign for president, claimed bias after several of Engoron’s rulings went against him, saying in a statement: “I can’t get a fair hearing in New York because of the hatred of me by Judges and the judiciary. It is not possible.” In February, Engoron enforced a subpoena for Trump and two of his children, Ivanka and Donald Jr., to give deposition testimony under oath. They testified in August after a state appeals court rejected attempts to overturn the ruling. Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination more than 400 times. In April, Engoron held the former president in contempt of court and fined him for being slow to respond to a subpoena requiring him to turn over certain documents. Engoron lifted the contempt finding in June after Trump paid the $110,000 fine and complied with other demands. Engoron has also issued rulings ordering the Trump Organization and its appraiser, Cushman & Wakefield to hand over evidence, and requiring another son, Eric Trump, to testify at a deposition. Trump has decried James’ lawsuit as “Another Witch Hunt” and noted that his company’s financial disclosures warned banks not to trust the information provided. Habba said the allegations in the lawsuit are “meritless.” Read More Here

DeSantis Drops Provocations For Now In Response To Ian
DeSantis Drops Provocations For Now In Response To Ian
DeSantis Drops Provocations — For Now — In Response To Ian https://digitalarizonanews.com/desantis-drops-provocations-for-now-in-response-to-ian/ Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has whipsawed his way through the national conversation this month, first by putting migrants on planes or buses to Democratic strongholds and then shifting to a more traditional role of crisis manager as one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the U.S. barreled into his state. Facing a reelection in November that could be a precursor to a presidential campaign, the approach has been awkward at points. Navigating one of his state’s darkest moments, DeSantis, a Republican, must partner with a Democratic president he has spent the better part of two years demeaning. He’s also gladly accepting the type of federal disaster aid and assistance he rejected as wasteful while he was a member of Congress. But together, the developments over the past two weeks offer insight into how DeSantis might govern if he wins another term as governor or advances in a 2024 presidential contest. He’s willing to use — and potentially exceed — the raw executive power of his office to pick at America’s most sensitive divides on issues like immigration. In a sudden moment of disaster, however, he’s capable of striking a more unifying tone in a way that former President Donald Trump — once a close ally and now a potential 2024 rival — rarely demonstrated. “At the end of the day, I view this as something that you’ve got folks that are in need, and local, federal and state, we have a need to work together,” DeSantis said at a briefing late Thursday, taking a far more conciliatory tone toward an administration he bitterly criticized just days earlier. He expressed appreciation that FEMA has approved every request for aid he has made, and said he welcomed the agency’s director to travel with him to view destruction. The shift in tone is almost certainly temporary. When a 12-story condo building in Surfside, Florida, collapsed last year and killed 98 people, DeSantis appeared with local officials, including Democrats who praised his assistance. He sat next to President Joe Biden during a briefing with first responders and local officials in Miami. Within months, however, he returned to partisan brawls. Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., left, prepares to enter a vehicle, Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, in Punta Gorda, Fla. Hurricane Ian caused damage in the area. (AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee) Photo: ASSOCIATED PRESS/Wilfredo Lee Facing another tragedy, DeSantis didn’t answer questions this week about whether he would meet with Biden, saying he wasn’t sure about the president’s travel plans. At a FEMA briefing on Thursday, Biden also aimed to set aside hostilities, saying he would visit Florida when conditions allow and meet with DeSantis “if he wants to meet.” Biden and DeSantis both said they have spoken more than once. And at DeSantis’ request, Biden on Thursday declared a major disaster in parts of Florida, freeing up additional federal assistance to state and local governments and individuals. “We’re going to build it back with the state and local government,” Biden said. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre tweeted that Biden and DeSantis spoke again by phone on Friday, as the FEMA administrator is on the ground in Florida. DeSantis’ embrace of federal help is a shift from his early days as a congressman, when he voted against a federal relief package for New York and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy. That drew criticism this week from some New York-area officials and other Democrats who described the turnaround as a move from cruel to hypocritical. Richard Conley, a University of Florida political science professor, said DeSantis is doing what he needs to do, pragmatically and politically. While DeSantis is popular in the reliably Republican area of southwest Florida that was hardest hit by Hurricane Ian, he said people will inevitably become frustrated if it takes too long to get help, and will look for someone to blame. “He’s just got to get the job done,” said Conley. “The question will be: Going forward, does he look very statesmanlike? Does this help him with an eventual 2024 run? I don’t know, it remains to be seen.” Since his early years running for governor, DeSantis has been linked to Trump. DeSantis was a relatively obscure third-term congressman when he announced his 2018 bid for governor — and a Trump endorsement — on Fox News. He echoed some of Trump’s favorite lines as he campaigned, pledging, for example, to “drain the swamp” in Tallahassee. Trump took credit for the victory, though their relationship is said to have chilled amid the 2024 talk. As governor, DeSantis has elevated issues that excite the conservative base and used his resources and the power of his office to get things done his way, even if it pushed the limits of his legal authority. During the COVID pandemic, DeSantis insisted Florida would remain open. He shunned guidance from federal health experts and once said of Dr. Anthony Fauci that someone should “chuck him across the Potomac.” He also stripped funding from school districts that implemented mask mandates. This spring, DeSantis signed legislation stripping Disney of a special agreement that allowed the theme park to govern itself, after the company criticized a new state law that critics called “Don’t Say Gay. ” DeSantis also suspended an elected Democratic prosecutor in Tampa from office over statements about not pursuing criminal charges in abortion, transgender rights and certain low-level cases. The prosecutor has since filed a federal free speech lawsuit against the governor. In recent weeks, Florida under DeSantis’ direction paid for two flights of migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard. DeSantis was the latest GOP governor, frustrated over the federal government’s response to policing the southern border, to transport the migrants to Democratic cities. DeSantis defended the move as a way to make immigration a “front-burner issue” ahead of the midterms. Critics questioned the legality, and his Democratic opponent for governor said it represented a new low level of shrewdness. “It’s amazing to me what he’s willing to do for sheer political gain,” Charlie Crist, his gubernatorial challenger, said. Conley, who wrote a book about Trump and populism, said he understands the comparisons between the two men, both often provocative Republicans. But he noted key differences, including that DeSantis is more disciplined and restrained with statements on social media. “He may say controversial things, but I don’t think he’s going to sit around at 3 or 4 in the morning and contemplate how to get back at (Senate GOP Leader) Mitch McConnell or something” as Trump would do, Conley said. Trump also drew criticism for his responses to natural disasters, which often failed to convey empathy. After Puerto Rico was flattened by Hurricane Maria, he flew to San Juan and threw paper towels into the crowd, withheld aid and questioned whether a death toll in the thousands was contrived by Democrats to make him look bad. On a trip to Houston after Hurricane Harvey, he was criticized for not meeting with storm victims. When he returned days later, Trump urged those at a shelter to “have a good time.” Natural disasters have historically put U.S. politicians in predicaments. Years earlier, President George W. Bush left the impression of overlooking Hurricane Karina’s devastation in New Orleans when he flew over the city while returning to Washington from vacation. He later praised FEMA Director Michael Brown as doing “a heck of a job.” Both New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, and Democratic President Barack Obama felt political effects of a friendly greeting after Hurricane Sandy. The image may have helped Obama project a moderate, bipartisan front days before his election for a second term but conservatives derided Christie for what they called a “hug.” At Thursday’s afternoon briefing, DeSantis spoke of surveying the damage, from a wiped out causeway between the mainland and Sanibel Island off Fort Myers to destroyed homes and hundreds of people rescued. “These are resilient folks,” he said. “They will bounce back, but we just want to make sure that we can kind of pave the way for them.” Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. New York AG Seeking To Expedite Fraud Suit Against Trump And Company Deltaplex News
New York AG Seeking To Expedite Fraud Suit Against Trump And Company – Deltaplex News https://digitalarizonanews.com/new-york-ag-seeking-to-expedite-fraud-suit-against-trump-and-company-deltaplex-news/ (WASHINGTON) — New York Attorney General Letitia James wants to accelerate her $250 million fraud lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, his children, his company, and two of its executives. James, in a letter to the state’s chief administrative judge, signaled her intention to push for a trial before 2024 and asked him to keep the civil case before Judge Arthur Engoron, who had presided over disputes between the attorney general and the Trump legal team during the investigation. The Office of the Attorney General “intends to seek an expedited preliminary conference to set a trial date before the end of 2023,” James’ letter said. “Allowing for an expedited trial schedule on an enforcement proceeding after extensive litigation over subpoena enforcement is precisely the circumstance that warrants keeping this case before Justice Engoron in the interests of judicial economy.” Trump had asked for the case to be assigned to someone other than Engoron, who earlier held him in contempt for refusing to comply with a subpoena during the probe. Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, accused the attorney general’s office of trying to keep the case before a friendly judge. “OAG’s actions appear to be nothing less than a deliberate attempt to circumvent the rules of the Individual Assignment System and to ‘judge shop,”” Habba said in a letter asking for the case to be reassigned to the Commercial Division of New York State Supreme Court. The AG, in contrast, argues that Engoron is already familiar with the material so for expediency’s sake the case should stay with him. James has accused Trump of “staggering” fraud and alleges that the former president, with the help of his three eldest children and two corporate executives, “grossly inflated” his net worth by billions of dollars. The lawsuit accuses them of preparing hundreds of fraudulent and misleading financial statements that overstated the values of nearly every major property in the Trump portfolio, thereby convincing banks and insurers to giving Trump better terms than he otherwise would have received. All of the defendants have denied wrongdoing. Copyright © 2022, ABC Audio. All rights reserved. Read More Here

Hurricane Ians Remnants Mean A Prolonged Rain Event For D.C. Area
Hurricane Ian’s Remnants Mean A Prolonged Rain Event For D.C. Area https://digitalarizonanews.com/hurricane-ians-remnants-mean-a-prolonged-rain-event-for-d-c-area/ Hurricane Ian is making its second U.S. landfall Friday in South Carolina, spreading rain over much of the Mid-Atlantic, including in the Washington and Baltimore areas through the weekend and even into early next week. By Tuesday, the greater region could see at least 1.5 to 3 inches of rain. The rain is generally expected to fall slowly enough to prevent widespread flooding. The heaviest rain of the storm may occur Friday night into early Saturday. Much of Saturday could lack steady rain, but it will be damp, nonetheless. As the storm drifts back to the east, rainfall may increase again Sunday. It could even linger to some extent, until late Monday or even Tuesday. Most widespread rain: Friday night and Sunday. Total rainfall: 1.5 to 3-plus inches (about an inch tonight). Temperatures: Near 60 to mid-60s during the day. 50s at night. Storm departs: Late Monday into early Tuesday. The National Weather Service forecast shows rainfall increasing from north to south across the region, from about 3.5 inches near Fredericksburg to 1.5 inches north of Baltimore. These numbers have come down a little since midweek. The latest computer model simulations show about 2 to 3 inches in the immediate Washington area by the end of Tuesday. Some of the higher-resolution models simulate localized amounts up to 5 inches. What we expect, in detail Hurricane Ian is making its second landfall along the South Carolina coast Friday as a hybrid Category 1 hurricane. The remnant vortex aloft and at the surface will slowly drift northward along the Appalachians over the next two to three days. Afterward, it will move east and eventually exit the coast. Given this storm track, the region should buckle down for an extended period of largely beneficial, soaking rain into Monday. The outer edge of Ian’s rain shield will spread over the Washington region late Friday afternoon into early evening. A stiff breeze from the northeast also will develop, and temperatures will hover near 60. In all, it will often feel like a long duration nor’easter through the weekend. Some exceptions may be noted further south and east, where a brief window for damaging winds or an isolated tornado may present itself in the Virginia Tidewater. As the sets of forecast weather maps show, the progression will be slow indeed, and the surface low will assume a double-barrel configuration over time. The eventual inland surface low — former Ian — is an expression of the vortex and energy aloft, while a separate low along the Delmarva coast eventually takes shape. A dry slot of air at upper levels will work across the region at some point this weekend — probably Saturday — and may turn otherwise steady rain to more showery episodes for a time. A lot of the moisture feeding into the system during the early weekend will be sourced as a deep, tropical plume extended into the Caribbean, what is termed and “atmospheric river.” By Monday, strengthening winds aloft will draw the remnant upper level low toward the east and offshore, causing rains to slowly taper through the day. Some weather modeling keeps this process going into Tuesday. As noted earlier in the week, freshwater flooding risk should not be widespread thanks to relatively dry conditions ahead of this rain event. While some isolated flooding is possible, and a flood watch may be issued, the biggest water concern from Ian’s remnants locally is more likely to come from unusually high tides along the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Fueled by strong winds out of the east and northeast, a coastal flood warning is up for St. Mary’s County, as well as beaches further south. In Southern Maryland, tides of two to two and a half feet above normal are anticipated through the weekend. This will lead to flooding of some roads and other locations. Coastal flood advisories are also in effect for much of the bay shore and Potomac River, including the District. These areas can expect tides running above normal, as well, leading to some flooding in places like the Tidal Basin. The timing of the dry air intrusion into the remnant Ian vortex, and also exact placement of both low-pressure systems in coming days, adds some uncertainty to when and where the heavy rains will fall. Additionally, stiff easterly low-level winds impinging on the mountains may shift the heaviest amounts over that region through what is termed “orographic enhancement.” Moderate to heavy rain that is expected to fall Friday night is a fairly certain part of the forecast. While there is an anticipated lull Saturday, it’s not a given. Timing and amounts after that are subject to potentially larger revision, although given general model agreement, we can feel reasonably sure that the scenario will play out as imagined in broad strokes. Trump will attend an Oct. 9 rally in Mesa, Arizona, about four weeks before November’s general election. The event will be held at Legacy Sports Parks in Mesa, a 320-acre private family sports and entertainment complex. Trump is slated to take the stage at 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET). ‘A TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE’: TRUMP ERUPTS AT DEMOCRATS AT FIRST RALLY AFTER FBI RAID Trump held a similar rally in July in Prescott Valley, where thousands packed the Findlay Toyota Center in the deeply conservative Arizona enclave just before the primary elections. Biden Calls Nord Stream Pipeline Leaks A 'deliberate Act Of Sabotage' | CNN Politics https://digitalarizonanews.com/biden-calls-nord-stream-pipeline-leaks-a-deliberate-act-of-sabotage-cnn-politics/ CNN  —  President Joe Biden on Friday called the leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines a “deliberate act of sabotage” and accused Russia and President Vladimir Putin of “pumping out disinformation and lies,” though he did not directly accuse Moscow for the leaks. Biden’s strong words mark the first time he’s directly asserted that the leaks were a result of sabotage, pushing back on Russia’s narrative about the incident amid Moscow’s escalating efforts to assert its claim over Ukrainian territory. On Monday, leaks were discovered in the pipelines, prompting investigations by European authorities that determined powerful underwater explosions had occurred just before the pipelines burst in several places. Biden said that the United States is working with allies to “get to the bottom of exactly – precisely what happened” with the leaks and that he has already directed resources to help allies enhance protection of the pipelines, which funnel gas from Russia into the European Union. “Let me say this, it was a deliberate act of sabotage and now the Russians are pumping out disinformation and lies,” Biden said. At “the appropriate moment when things calm down, we’re gonna send the divers down to find out exactly what happened,” he added. “We don’t know that yet.” Western nations have said leaks in Nord Stream 1 and 2, two Russian gas pipelines, are likely the result of sabotage. But up to this point, US officials had been largely circumspect compared to their European counterparts in drawing conclusions about the leaks. Putin on Friday claimed “Anglo-Saxons” were to blame for the explosions, claiming: “Well, for the Anglo-Saxons sanctions are no longer enough, they switched to sabotage. Unbelievable, but it is a fact.” Biden, however, insisted that what Putin is saying about the leaks is “not true.” And national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Friday that the US does not believe any NATO ally is behind the leaks. The pipelines were controversial long before Russia waged war on Ukraine, largely because of fears around European reliance on Russian energy. If Russia did deliberately cause the explosions, it would be effectively sabotaging its own pipelines: Russian state company Gazprom is the majority shareholder in Nord Stream 1 and the sole owner of Nord Stream 2. But officials familiar with the latest intelligence say that Moscow would likely view such a step as worth the price if it helped raise the costs of supporting Ukraine for Europe. US and western intelligence officials believe Putin is gambling that as electricity costs rise and winter approaches, European publics could turn against the Western strategy of isolating Russia economically. Sabotaging the pipelines could “show what Russia is capable of,” one US official previously told CNN. Allegations about the leaks come amid what the West has cast as Moscow’s most serious escalation in the war in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in February. Last week, Putin announced partial mobilization in Russia, calling up 300,000 reservists. And earlier Friday, Putin delivered a formal speech announcing that Russia is to annex nearly a fifth of Ukraine following so-called referendums, which have universally been dismissed as shams by Ukraine and Western countries. Biden on Friday responded to Putin’s earlier remarks about annexation, saying, “America is fully prepared with our NATO allies to defend every single inch of NATO territory. Every single inch. So, Mr. Putin, don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. Every inch.” Biden asserted that Western allies “are not going to be intimidated by Putin and his reckless words and threats. He’s not going to scare us or intimidate us. Putin’s actions are a sign he’s struggling.” “The sham referenda he carried out and … the sham routine that he put on this morning … well, the United States is never going to recognize this and quite frankly, the world’s not going to recognize it, either. He can’t seize his neighbor’s territory and get away with it. It’s as simple as that,” he continued. Earlier Friday, the US announced new sanctions in response to Putin’s annexation announcement. The measures include a combination of export controls, visa restrictions and asset freezes, as part of an effort to further clamp down on Russian supply chains – and the individuals directing the efforts – critical to maintaining the war effort. The United States, Biden said during his remarks, “is going to continue to stay the course” with Ukraine. “We’re going to continue to provide military equipment so that Ukraine can defend itself and its territory and its freedom, including additional resources that the Congress is going to give me today of $13 billion more dollars to help Ukrainians defend themselves and fight back,” he continued. This story has been updated with additional developments Friday. Read More Here

DeSantis Shifts From Provocateur To Crisis Manager After Ian ABC17NEWS
DeSantis Shifts From Provocateur To Crisis Manager After Ian ABC17NEWS
DeSantis Shifts From Provocateur To Crisis Manager After Ian – ABC17NEWS https://digitalarizonanews.com/desantis-shifts-from-provocateur-to-crisis-manager-after-ian-abc17news/ By SARA BURNETT Associated Press Florida Gov. Facing another tragedy, DeSantis didn’t answer questions this week about whether he would meet with Biden, saying he wasn’t sure about the president’s travel plans. When he returned days later, Trump urged those at a shelter to “have a good time.” Natural disasters have historically put U.S. political leaders in predicaments. “They will bounce back, but we just want to make sure that we can kind of pave the way for them.” Read More Here

GOP Congressional Candidate Joe Kent's Ties To White Nationalists Include Interview With Nazi Sympathizer KVIA

GOP Congressional Candidate Joe Kent's Ties To White Nationalists Include Interview With Nazi Sympathizer – KVIA https://digitalarizonanews.com/gop-congressional-candidate-joe-kents-ties-to-white-nationalists-include-interview-with-nazi-sympathizer-kvia/ By Andrew Kaczynski and Em Steck, CNN Despite disavowing White nationalism last spring when one of its adherents endorsed him, a US House candidate in Washington subsequently gave a previously unreported interview in June to a Nazi sympathizer and White nationalist. While Republican Joe Kent touted his support for prominent far-right figures like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Green and Paul Gosar and supported MAGA policies, he was speaking with Greyson Arnold, a Nazi sympathizer. Kent’s exchange with Arnold is all the more notable because just weeks later Kent’s campaign worked to distance him from Arnold after photos surfaced of the pair together. A Kent campaign strategist told the Associated Press in July that the campaign did not do background checks on those who took selfies with the candidate. Arnold has a well-documented history of making White nationalist, racist, antisemitic and pro-Nazi statements, including once calling Adolf Hitler “a complicated historical figure which many people misunderstand.” In a statement to CNN, campaign spokesperson Matt Braynard said, “Joe Kent had no idea who that individual was when he encountered him on the street and Joe Kent has repeatedly condemned the statements that the individual is accused of making.” Braynard added that the campaign screens all interview requests and that Arnold approached Kent on the street by what he assumed was a local journalist. “None of the questions gave Joe any indications that the individual had any racist or antisemitic views and, if he had, Joe would have cancelled the interview immediately,” said Braynard. The campaign said that Arnold “is not in any way part of our campaign nor would we allow our campaign to be associated with someone who has that background. We also have no record of any contribution from that individual and if we had received one, we’d return it.” Kent, a former Green Beret and gold star spouse endorsed by former President Donald Trump, ran in this summer’s primary against Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, one of ten Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in 2021. In August, Kent advanced to November’s general election against Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez under the state’s top-two primary system after edging out Beutler, who placed third. Inside Elections recently redesignated the race as more competitive, moving it from “Safe Republican” to “Likely Republican.” A pro-Nazi blogger On a since-suspended Twitter account and active channel on Telegram called “Pure Politics,” Greyson, or “American Greyson” as he calls himself, has shared posts that called Nazi men the “pure race” and that the US should have sided with the Nazis during World War Two. Arnold has falsely claimed there were “Jewish plans to genocide the German people,” and in a post, he shared a quote that said the “Jewish led colored hordes of the Earth” were attempting to exterminate White people. Arnold was pictured in multiple photographs with Kent at a fundraiser in April and has been canvassing for Republican candidates with Washington State Young Republicans, with one recent photo showing Arnold in a Joe Kent shirt according to photos on their public Instagram. Speaking with Arnold, Kent praised Gosar’s stance on illegal and legal immigration in a friendly five-minute interview. “Paul Gosar has been excellent, obviously immigration — border state down there. He took me down to the border, so I got a firsthand feel of all the crises we face there,” said Kent. “Representative Gosar also has some awesome legislation he’s proposed about getting rid of a lot of the legal immigration.” Arnold was at the Capitol during the January 6, 2021, riot, posting a video of himself leaving the steps of the front of the building saying they were being “chased out by communists,” calling the riot “an American baptism,” as he said police were deploying tear gas. There is no indication he entered the building, and he has not been charged with any crime. Extremist links bogged down Kent’s campaign While Kent has tried to shift his campaign rhetoric toward the center — including by removing calls to adjudicate the 2020 election from his website sometime between June and July — his campaign has been bogged down by associations with white nationalists and extremists, whom Kent has repeatedly had to distance himself from. Back in March 2022, Kent disavowed Nick Fuentes, a 24-year-old far-right white nationalist, after Fuentes endorsed Kent in the primary. Fuentes is the architect of the America First Political Action Conference, a white nationalist conference held annually that received intense backlash this year after Gosar appeared at the event and Greene attended it. Kent said at the time that he was unfamiliar with Fuentes despite a brief call with him in spring 2021 about the candidate’s social media strategy. In April 2021, Kent tweeted in defense of Fuentes after he was banned from Twitter. “Many are glad that their political rivals are targeted by the state & big tech, they hate Trump, @NickJFuentes & MAGA. This short side thinking has led to some of the greatest tragedies in human history. We must fight for all speech & fight the confluence of gov & big tech.” He later said he stood by his comments but reiterated he did not want Fuentes’ endorsement because of Fuentes’ “focus on race/religion.” Kent’s website also features an endorsement from Arizona state Sen. Wendy Rogers who was censured by the Republican-controlled Arizona senate after she gave a speech to the white nationalist conference calling for public hangings. Russian Media Push Baseless Theory That US Attacked Pipeline
Russian Media Push Baseless Theory That US Attacked Pipeline
Russian Media Push Baseless Theory That US Attacked Pipeline https://digitalarizonanews.com/russian-media-push-baseless-theory-that-us-attacked-pipeline/ By David Klepper | Associated Press The Kremlin and Russian state media are aggressively pushing a baseless conspiracy theory blaming the United States for damage to natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in what analysts said Friday is another effort to split the U.S. and its European allies. The Russian position is also reverberating on social media forums popular with American conservatives and far-right groups. NATO leaders believe the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines between Russia and Germany is the result of sabotage. NATO has refrained from identifying a suspect pending an investigation into the damage. Russia began blaming the U.S. quickly after the damage was reported Monday night. On Friday, speaking at a ceremony to annex four Ukrainian regions, Russian President Vladimir Putin said “Anglo-Saxons” in the West were behind the “terror attacks” but did not specify any nations. Pravda and other Russian state outlets reported Thursday that the U.S. operates underwater robots capable of carrying out the acts of sabotage. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman wrote about her suspicions of U.S. involvement in a Telegram post. “Europe must know the truth!” Maria Zakharova wrote on Telegram Wednesday. President Joe Biden on Friday dismissed Russia’s claims. “It was a deliberate act of sabotage. And now the Russians are pumping out disinformation and lies,” Biden said. “… When things calm down, we’re going to send the divers down to find out exactly what happened. We don’t know that yet exactly. But just don’t listen to what Putin’s saying. What he’s saying we know is not true.” The assertions of U.S. responsibility cite Biden’s threat in February to stop the recently completed Nord Stream 2 pipeline if Russia invaded Ukraine. “If Russia invades … then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2,” Biden said. “We will bring an end to it.” The two Nord Stream lines were not in operation but were filled with tons of methane that began bubbling to the surface following the damage. Russia recently shut off the Nord Stream 1 pipeline as it ramped up energy pressure on Europe. Nord Stream 2 has never been used. File photo: Fox News’ Tucker Carlson also floated the theory Tuesday that the U.S. was behind the sabotage. Richard Drew/Associated Press Fox News’ Tucker Carlson played the Biden clip on his show Tuesday and brought up the possibility that the U.S. was behind the sabotage. “If they did this, this will be one of the craziest, most destructive things any American administration has ever done, but it would also be totally consistent with what they do,” Carlson said. Former President Donald Trump also reposted Biden’s remarks on Truth Social along with a call for the U.S. to remain “cool, calm” in its relations with Russia. “Wow. What a statement. World War III anyone?” he wrote. Contacted for a response, a spokeswoman for Fox News forwarded transcripts from past episodes of Carlson’s show, including one in which he discussed a conspiracy theory about supposed secret bioweapon research in Ukraine. A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately respond to a message on Friday. The suggestion that the U.S. caused the damage was circulating on online forums popular with American conservatives and followers of QAnon, a conspiracy theory movement which asserts that Trump is fighting a battle against a Satanic child-trafficking sect that controls world events. The claim’s popularity among the American far-right and the speed with which it spread from Russian state media reflect mounting skepticism about America’s role in the war in Ukraine, according to Emma Ashford, a senior fellow at the Washington, D.C.-based Stimson Center and an expert on security and energy. “Russia is quite good at capitalizing on these divides, but it doesn’t create them,” she said. It’s not the first time Russia has spread disinformation seeking to redirect blame for the war and undermine Ukraine’s allies. Earlier this year, Kremlin-controlled media mounted a disinformation operation asserting the U.S. had been running secret bioweapon labs in Ukraine. Carlson helped amplify that theory too. Networks allied with the Kremlin have also spread frightening tales about Ukrainian refugees, and blamed atrocities committed during the war on Ukrainians. Seen in that context, the conspiracy theory alleging U.S. responsibility for the pipeline damage is consistent, the researchers concluded. “The central theme is that this is a “false-flag” operation, an American plot designed to convince Europe that it was a Russian attack intended to signal the vulnerability of Europe’s energy supplies,” the researchers wrote. (Caitlin Fowble photo/AZPreps365) Caitlin Fowble is an ASU Cronkite School of Journalism graduate student assigned to cover Deer Valley for AZPreps365.com The Deer Valley Skyhawks took all three sets backed by a strong offensive showing against the Agua Fria Owls in Avondale Thursday night.  Deer Valley (5-3, 1-1) shined on offense, winning the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-11. The Skyhawks had all things working as they never trailed during the match.   “Definitely our energy and our positivity. Our serving was key, and then obviously we had some good hits,” Skyhawks coach Jackie Wallace said.  The Skyhawks finished with 11 aces and 37 kills. Seniors Sam Gloria and Amanda Hardt combined for 30 of those kills.  Sophomore Bella Figueroa also credited her team’s energy in Thursday’s win.  “The bench helped with all the cheering. We were really good,” Figueroa said. “It was the bench. We all helped.” The Skyhawks bench was involved the entire match, providing strong communication and encouragment for their teammates.  The Skyhawks and the Owls (2-6, 1-1) were dialed into a first-set battle when play paused due to an injury. Skyhawks junior Natalie Vasquez suffered an ankle injury midway through the first set and left the match.  “It’s heartbreaking, totally,” Wallace said. “I think they really wanted to win for her probably,  and are worried for her, but they all pulled it together today.” During the stoppage in play, the Owls’ players stood in front of an injured Vasquez, giving her privacy in a great show of sportsmanship.  “Well I think all players worry about it happening to them,” Owls coach Jen Weeg said. “You’re always worried about it as an athlete and it takes you like three or four points afterwards to reset your mind.” After the injury, the Skyhawks outscored the Owls 8-4 to secure the set victory. The rest of the match was dominated by the Skyhawks’ power on offense.  “I was very excited to play and really wanted a win tonight,” said Figueroa, who finished the night with two kills and two aces.  It wasn’t reflected in the box score, but the Owls played a hard-fought match in all three sets with the Skyhawks.  “I do think my team really stepped up and played at a higher level that they haven’t played in the past,” Weeg said. “We definitely challenged them a couple times, and we had a lot of long rallies and volleys.” Both teams are preparing to move forward, competing in separate tournaments this weekend.  “I definitely think we need to learn to put the ball away,” Weeg said. “I thought we passed well tonight, which we hadn’t passed well last night. So I’m looking for our hitters to make the same adjustments this weekend.” “This is a good win, a good confidence booster going into tomorrow. We’re excited,” Wallace said.  Deer Valley travels to Mesa to compete in the Nike Tournament of Champions on Saturday and Sunday. Their first game of the weekend is against La Jolla Country Day (CA) School (7-15, 0-3) Saturday at 10 a.m. Agua Fria heads to Queen Creek to compete in the “Spiketown” volleyball tournament. Their first game takes place Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Gilbert Christian Knights (8-3, 4-0). Read More Here

Tillis Endorses And Donates To Hines In Competitive Triangle Congressional Race https://digitalarizonanews.com/tillis-endorses-and-donates-to-hines-in-competitive-triangle-congressional-race/ RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis is throwing his support behind a Republican political newcomer, seeking to bolster Bo Hines’ bid in what is expected to be the closest congressional race in the state this year. A political action committee affiliated with Tillis recently gave Hines’ campaign $2,900, according to Tillis adviser Jordan Shaw. The total is the maximum contribution allowed by the Federal Election Commission. The Tillis-aligned group also backed a number of other Republicans, including the two running for a pair of state Supreme Court seats and several General Assembly candidates. “Senator Tillis knows North Carolina can’t afford more inflation-causing spending sprees from Nancy Pelosi, so he’s doing what he can to get Republicans elected across the state,” Shaw told WRAL News. Hines’ campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the candidate’s thoughts about Tillis’ involvement in the race. The contributions from Tillis’ group, NC Red, were first reported on Friday in the NC Insider. Tillis has had sizable sway in North Carolina this year. In the May primary, he helped defeat U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn after the bombastic 27-year-old called Tillis a Republican In Name Only. Tillis instead backed state Sen. Chuck Edwards, who narrowly defeated Cawthorn in a crowded GOP primary field. Hines, another 27-year-old Republican, has embraced similar hardline policies as Cawthorn, but insists he’s more interested in governing than the congressman had been. The two appeared on the campaign trail last year in western North Carolina. Hines and Cawthorn also had speaking slots at an April 9 rally held by former President Donald Trump. “I don’t know who’s better looking, him or Madison,” Trump told the crowd. Hines, who has long touted Trump’s endorsement, also joined the former president at a recent event in Wilmington. Tillis represents a more centrist wing of the Republican Party, which could resonate with more moderate voters in the district Hines is seeking to represent, which includes Johnston County and parts of Wake, Wayne and Harnett counties. The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan group that analyzes the political leaning of congressional districts, considers North Carolina’s 13th District a toss-up with a slight Republican bent. It’s one of 30 toss-up seats in the country and is the only such contest in North Carolina. Read More Here

Trump Holding Rally In Nevada For GOP Candidates https://digitalarizonanews.com/trump-holding-rally-in-nevada-for-gop-candidates/ Wade Vandervort Former President Donald Trump speaks at the America First rally to show support for Nevada Republican gubernatorial candidate Joe Lombardo and Republican Nevada Senate candidate Adam Laxalt at Treasure Island Friday, July 8, 2022. By Casey Harrison (contact) Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 | 11:38 a.m. With fewer than six weeks to go before the Nov. 8 general election, Donald Trump will hold a rally in Northern Nevada next week for many of the state’s Republican candidates vying for office, according to an event page on the former president’s website. Trump’s “Save America” rally will be held at the Minden-Tahoe Airport on Oct. 8, according to the website entry. Doors open at 2 p.m., and the event is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Spokespeople for the campaigns of Senate hopeful Adam Laxalt and gubernatorial candidate Joe Lombardo weren’t immediately available for comment. In a statement, a campaign spokesman for Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto — whom Laxalt is running to unseat — slammed the move, calling Laxalt “Trump’s top lackey” in Nevada. “No one did more to overturn the 2020 election for Donald Trump than Adam Laxalt, and he is once again being rewarded,” Cortez Masto spokesman Josh Marcus-Blank said. “Laxalt has made it clear he will break the rules and go even further than Trump to gain power, but Nevadans have rejected them both before and will reject them again in November.” Reeves Oyster, spokeswoman for incumbent Gov. Steve Sisolak’s campaign, said in a statement, “Joe Lombardo is calling in backup after another abysmal week on the campaign trail where he was caught trying to rewrite his entire anti-abortion record and called out — again — for raising crime on his watch.” “But one thing is still clear: no amount of Trump visits will cover up the fact that Joe Lombardo is another anti-abortion, corrupt, failed politician who will do or say anything to win,” Oyster said. Laxalt served as the co-chair of Trump’s 2020 reelection bid in Nevada and launched several lawsuits aiming to overturn the election’s results. President Joe Biden bested Trump by 33,596 votes, or 2.9%, in Nevada. Virtually all of the lawsuits filed by Laxalt or other conservatives seeking to reverse the results of the election were overturned. Read More Here

Challenge To Az https://digitalarizonanews.com/challenge-to-az/ Caitlin Sievers/Arizona MirrorMembers of Save Our Schools chant during a news conference on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix Sept. 23, 2022, after the group claimed it collected 141,714 signatures from voters who want to see the expansion of the state’s school voucher program put to a voter referendum. Public school advocates did not collect enough signatures to block universal school vouchers and force a public vote in 2024, the Secretary of State’s Office announced Friday morning.  The expansion of the state’s Empowerment Scholarship Account program, which Republican lawmakers approved earlier this year, makes a program that had previously been implemented in a limited capacity available to all 1.1 million Arizona students. The program gives participants about $7,000 to pay for private school, homeschooling or other educational options — and it can be socked away to pay for college in the future. Now that the referendum effort has failed, the Arizona Department of Education announced that it would begin to approve voucher applications received for the expansion. Save Our Schools Arizona, the group that hoped to put the expansion to a referendum, announced on Sept. 23 when it turned in its petitions that it collected 141,714 signatures, more than enough to get it on the 2024 ballot.  But it soon became clear that was incorrect.  “Though our estimated signature count was much higher, the discrepancy was influenced by several factors, including the incredibly high volume of returns of petitions in the final week, days, and hours of the campaign,” Save Our Schools said in a statement on Friday. “Our grassroots campaign relied on hand counts and volunteer hours, in stark contrast to deep-pocketed special interests like the Goldwater Institute who use sophisticated software to further their goal of dismantling public education in Arizona.” Save Our Schools Arizona did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the announcement Friday morning from Secretary of State’s Office. The Secretary of State’s Office said that it would release signature totals once it completes a full review of the petitions, as is required by law.  According to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office, the group filed 8,175 petition sheets. That means the group would have needed about 17.3 signatures per petition sheet to hit the number of signatures claimed — an impossibility, as there are only 15 lines per sheet.  The Goldwater Institute and Center for Arizona Policy — conservative groups that have advocated for the school voucher expansion and marshaled a campaign to hinder Save Our Schools Arizona’s referendum effort — claimed that fewer than 89,000 signatures were actually filed.  “This is a monumental victory for students not only in Arizona, but also across the nation,” said Matt Beienburg, director of education policy at the Goldwater Institute. “Lawmakers in every other state now know it’s possible to defeat the radical teachers unions and make students the priority of our education system once again.” Read More Here

Former U.S. President Donald Trump rallies with his supporters at Wilmington International Airport in Wilmington, North Carolina, U.S. September 23, 2022. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) – The writer suing Donald Trump for defamation after he denied having raped her in the mid-1990s accused the former U.S. president of stonewalling and trying to avoid a scheduled deposition as he tries to delay the case indefinitely. In a letter filed on Friday in federal court in Manhattan, a lawyer for E. Jean Carroll also said Trump was “mistaken” in arguing that the lawsuit should be dismissed altogether because the U.S. government, and not he, was the proper defendant. Trump sought to put Carroll’s case on hold on Wednesday, after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan left it to a Washington, D.C., appeals court to decide whether Trump acted as president when he branded Carroll a liar in 2019. A determination could take months, and a ruling in Trump’s favor could end Carroll’s defamation case. “He should not be permitted to assert at the last minute that he is entitled to avoid a deposition because it remains on appeal,” Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan wrote. “It could hardly be clearer that defendant hopes to ‘run out the clock’ until he is elected president again.” A lawyer for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kaplan also accused Trump of seeking an improper leg up in pre-trial discovery, saying Carroll has turned over 30,469 pages of documents and 19 substantive responses to questions over four months, while Trump has produced eight documents and four “incomplete” responses. Carroll sued Trump in November 2019, five months after he denied raping her in the mid-1990s in a Manhattan department store dressing room, and said “she’s not my type.” The former Elle magazine columnist still plans to sue Trump for battery and inflicting emotional distress on Nov. 24. On that date, Carroll and other accusers get a one-year window to sue over alleged sexual misconduct even if the statute of limitations expired long ago under a recently enacted New York state law. The case is Carroll v Trump, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 20-07311. Related Articles Read More Here

Zelensky Pushes accelerated Application For Ukraine NATO Membership
Zelensky Pushes ‘accelerated’ Application For Ukraine NATO Membership https://digitalarizonanews.com/zelensky-pushes-accelerated-application-for-ukraine-nato-membership/ KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine is applying for “accelerated ascension” into NATO, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday, in an apparent answer to Russia’s move to illegally annex four of the country’s partially occupied regions. The remarks were more symbolic than practical: The speedy admittance of Ukraine to the alliance would require members to immediately send troops to fight Russia, under collective defense obligations. Ukraine has long sought NATO membership, but Zelensky conceded in March that Ukraine had to accept that it was not going to be accepted into the Western military alliance, despite receiving security assistance from countries in it. “De facto, we have already made our way to NATO,” Zelensky said in a Telegram statement. “De facto, we have already proven compatibility with Alliance standards. They are real for Ukraine — real on the battlefield and in all aspects of our interaction. We trust each other, we help each other, and we protect each other.” In practice, the chances of Ukraine joining NATO have only grown slimmer in the course of the Russian invasion. Member countries, including the United States, have drawn clear lines: They arm Ukraine, but they don’t have their own troops on the ground out of concern for triggering a World War. Just an hour before Zelensky’s announcement, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Moscow’s illegal annexation of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, which Russian forces have partially occupied. At the time of Putin’s speech, Zelensky was meeting with his National Security Council. “There will be no negotiations with Russia while Putin is the president,” Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff, said on Telegram. “We are moving forward. To victory.” Read More Here

It’s the latest impact of the storm that inundated wide sections of the Florida peninsula — and Ian is expected to bring power outages and flooding to South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina. Ahead of Ian’s arrival, a hurricane warning covered all of the South Carolina coast and part of the North Carolina shore up to Cape Fear. Charleston County, which includes around 100 miles of coastline, declared an emergency on Thursday and opened shelters for people who want to sit out the storm in safe spaces and on higher ground. But the county had to halt bus service to shelters on Thursday, when high winds made those trips risky. Just north along the coast, Georgetown County urged people in flood-prone areas to keep an eye on weather warnings — but in contrast to Charleston, the county said on Thursday that it had no plans to open shelters. It also eschewed other steps such as offering sandbags, saying people can buy them at stores. There is no evacuation order in effect, but residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should keep a close eye on conditions. #HurricaneIan pic.twitter.com/1ENpmTBqpA — Georgetown County, S.C. It expects other impacts to range from trees snapped off or uprooted, debris blocking roads and bridges and high roads becoming unsafe. Flooding started in the predawn darkness Much of the Charleston metro area began the day Friday under a flash flood warning that was issued around 6 a.m. ET — hours before the hurricane was expected to bring its storm surge. In downtown Charleston, some roads started flooding before dawn, as Ian’s heavy rain bands dropped 1 to 2 inches of water on the city, according to the National Weather Service office in Charleston. Another 2 to 6 inches of rain could fall, it warned. Flash flooding was expected to hit a number of popular tourist areas, such as Folly Beach to Sullivans Island and Isle of Palms. Further inland, floods will also likely hit North Charleston, the office said. Read More Here

Woman Arrested With 36 Kilograms Of Fentanyl Pills https://digitalarizonanews.com/woman-arrested-with-36-kilograms-of-fentanyl-pills/ PHOENIX, Ariz. – Maria Fernanda Granillo-Velazquez, 21, of Mexico, was charged on August 19, 2022, by criminal complaint for Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl. Granillo-Velazquez had her initial appearance on August 22, 2022, before United States Magistrate Judge Michael T. Morrissey. The case is set for trial on November 1, 2022, before United States District Judge John J. Tuchi. The complaint alleges that, on August 18, 2022, members of the Phoenix DEA East Valley Drug Enforcement Task Force were contacted by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) regarding a traffic stop of a vehicle on Interstate 10 in Pinal County, Arizona. The sole occupant of the vehicle was Granillo-Velazquez. During the traffic stop, a canine trained in detecting narcotics alerted to the presence of narcotics coming from the vehicle. PCSO deputies searched the vehicle and discovered a concealed compartment in the floorboard underneath the rear seats. The concealed compartment contained approximately 21 packages containing blue pills stamped M30.   Investigators seized approximately 36.75 kilograms (approximately 360,000 pills) from the vehicle. The Chandler Police Department laboratory confirmed a sample of the M30 pills contained fentanyl. A conviction for possessing with the intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum term of life in prison. A criminal complaint is merely an allegation of criminal conduct, not evidence. An individual is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The Phoenix DEA East Valley Drug Enforcement Task Force and the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation in this case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Phoenix, is handling the prosecution. Trump-Backed Dr. Oz Eating Into Biden
Trump-Backed Dr. Oz Eating Into Biden
Trump-Backed Dr. Oz Eating Into Biden https://digitalarizonanews.com/trump-backed-dr-oz-eating-into-biden/ Over the summer, Dr. Mehmet Oz’s bid to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate seemed like a Quixotic quest all but destined to end in defeat. Fetterman is still the clear favorite—more than half of likely voters in the state, according to several polls evaluated by Newsweek, expect him to win. But with just over a month left in the race, Oz is not only competitive, he’s surging. In August, Fox News pollsters projected Democrat John Fetterman’s lead over Oz at about 11 points; it’s now 4. Franklin and Marshall College had Fetterman winning by more than a dozen points in August, but the gap has fallen into single digits. And where conservative pollsters had Fetterman with a slight advantage over the summer, the race—according to right-leaning pollsters like the Trafalgar Group and Emerson College—is now statistically tied, with the polling gap between the two reduced from a 12-point lean for Fetterman in mid-August to just six points entering the closing weeks of the campaign. Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz holds a press conference with U.S. Senator Pat Toomey on September 6, 2022, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the November general election, Oz faces Democrat John Fetterman. Mark Makela/Getty Images According to those polls, the shift came largely from Oz’s increasing popularity among independents as well as the Black and Hispanic voter base that helped President Joe Biden to a 1.2 percent victory in the state in the 2020 presidential election. According to a 2020 study by the University of California-Los Angeles, only an estimated 17 percent of urban Hispanic voters in Pennsylvania voted for President Donald Trump in that year’s election, helping Biden achieve about 65 percent of the Hispanic vote nationally, according to exit polls. However, recent Emerson polling shows Oz currently outperforming Trump among that demographic, leading Fetterman’s support among Hispanic voters at 46 percent. And while Fetterman has a clear lead among Black voters—with roughly 65 percent of the vote, according to Emerson polling—Oz still has the support of 16 percent of Black voters in the state, according to an Insider Advantage poll published this week, outpacing Trump’s percentage of the New York Times’ estimated national Black vote in 2020 by more than 5 points. Fox News polling shows Oz’s support among non-white voters in the state at about 24 percent, a worrying indicator after a pro-Oz super PAC released an ad reviving an incident in which Fetterman pulled a gun on a Black jogger as mayor of Braddock roughly a decade earlier. “I think Fetterman is struggling a little bit with urban and non-white voters,” Franklin and Marshall pollster Berwood Yost told Newsweek. “They just don’t seem as motivated as they could be for this race. And I think that could be an important part of the story.” The independent vote could also be of concern for Fetterman. According to recent polling by Franklin and Marshall, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro holds a near 20-point lead over Republican nominee Doug Mastriano among independent voters. Fetterman’s lead among that demographic is just 11 percent despite significantly higher favorability ratings and his more popular stance on social issues. The key difference in the race? Economic issues. According to that same poll, nearly one-third of voters identified some economic concern—unemployment, taxes or the state of the economy—as their top concern entering the 2022 midterms. Overall, 39 percent of voters Franklin and Marshall surveyed believe Oz-backed policies will benefit them financially, compared to 32 percent for Fetterman. But the main thing that boosted the number, Yost told Newsweek, was a consolidation of support among Republicans who were previously tepid in their support. “Republicans have sort of warmed to his candidacy, I would imagine for a number of reasons, including economic reasons,” Yost said. “It’s hard for me to know which is more important in the race, but I think that the more Oz can turn the question to economic matters, the better off he is, because that is a top-of-mind concern to many people.” Read More Here
