Scottsdale Boxing Gym Fights Parkinson’s Progression One Punch At A Time https://digitalarizonanews.com/scottsdale-boxing-gym-fights-parkinsons-progression-one-punch-at-a-time/ SCOTTSDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — Over the years, doctors have long questioned the connection between boxing and head injuries leading to degenerative brain diseases. But a Phoenix-area group who’s fighting the battle of Parkinson’s disease is hitting the bags in the name of health. “These guys are all fighters,” said Duane Bell. Fighters who are training for something bigger than a belt. “They’re here week in and week out,” said Bell. These athletes are a little older. “Listen, I have a class with an average age of 75-78,” said Bell. “It works on my coordination, works on my cognition, works on my balance. It’s wonderful,” said Jan Scheer. The workout helps with motor functions, which are debilitated by Parkinson’s. “Its a great feeling to know that I can do that,” said Scheer. It’s a disease that affects your mobility, your mental health and even something so simple as writing a letter. “My handwriting, couldn’t read it before. Now you can’t read it at all,” said Sheryl Lowenhar. “My dad had Parkinson’s. I kind of knew what to expect.” It’s the disease that brought this group together at Scottsdale’s Pound Boxing Club. Each of them is dealing with different symptoms and different progressions. All of them are led by owner Duane Bell and are working to prolong an illness that has no cure. “There is no contact, but the benefits of the sport is the coordination, the conditioning obviously, the strength building, balance working with their foot movement, even the cognitive aspects of calling out the numbers, memorization of the punches and the movement is very beneficial to Parkinson’s,” said Bell. Before Bell owned this gym, he fell in love with the sport by working with world-class trainer Freddie Roach. He’s a legendary fixture in the boxing community who has Parkinson’s. “I think about Freddie quite often. It’s not at the forefront of my mind ‘cause I literally have room full of Freddies in front of me,” said Bell. Doctors agree boxing can help Parkinson’s patients. “One thing everybody knows is how hard it is, training for a boxing competition,” said Mayo Clinic neurologist Dr. Rodolfo Savica. “We know that exercise, especially aerobic exercise, high heart rate and you’re sweating is one of the only things that we can suggest to delay the progression of Parkinson’s disease.” It’s working for Lowenhar, who, at one time, had nowhere to throw punches in Scottsdale and knocked on this gym door five years ago to do these charitable classes. “Don’t tell him this but Duane is an angel,” said Lowenhar. “And he really makes you feel like you belong here,” said Scheer. Bell admits, at times, it’s hard to see the disease winning rounds on his fighters but he’s grateful to be in their corners. “After doing this for five years consistently, it is hard to see some of my clients deteriorate but its also really positive to see them fight off that deterioration with every breath.” Scottsdale’s Pound Boxing Club, on Northsight Boulevard near Hayden Road, is holding its fifth annual fundraiser for the Michael J. Fox Foundation on Saturday, Oct. 22nd, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information on how to register, click/tap here. Copyright 2022 KTVK/KPHO. All rights reserved. Read More…

EDT https://digitalarizonanews.com/ap-news-summary-at-837-p-m-edt-3/ Putin adds martial law in Ukraine regions, limits in Russia KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin doubled down Wednesday on his faltering invasion of Ukraine with a declaration of martial law in four illegally annexed regions and preparations within Russia for draconian new restrictions and crackdowns. Putin’s drastic efforts to tighten his grip on Ukrainians and Russians follow a series of embarrassing setbacks: stinging battlefield defeats, sabotage and troubles with his troop mobilization. The martial law order belies the Kremlin’s attempts to portray life in the annexed regions as returning to normal. The reality is that a military administration has replaced civilian leaders in the southern city of Kherson and a mass evacuation from the city is underway as a Ukrainian counteroffensive grinds on. First Native American woman in space awed by Mother Earth CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The first Native American woman in space says she’s overwhelmed by the beauty and delicacy of Mother Earth. She’s also channeling “positive energy” as her five-month mission gets underway at the International Space Station, something she learned from her mother. NASA astronaut Nicole Mann spoke with The Associated Press on Wednesday, answering questions gathered from AP members, as well as tribal news outlets. She’s a member of the Wailacki of the Round Valley Indian Tribes in Northern California. Mann says it’s important to recognize that there are all types of people aboard the space station, highlighting “our diversity.” She rocketed into orbit with SpaceX two weeks ago. Trump deposed in defamation suit filed by E. Jean Carroll NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump answered questions under oath in a defamation lawsuit filed by a writer who says he raped her in the mid-1990s. The deposition Wednesday provided lawyers for E. Jean Carroll a chance to interrogate the Republican ex-president about Carroll’s assault allegations, as well as statements he made in 2019 when she first told her story publicly. Trump has said the rape allegation is “a hoax and a lie.” A judge last week rejected Trump’s request to delay the deposition. Details on how the deposition went weren’t immediately disclosed. Trump Lawyers Pushed Claims Of Voter Fraud They Knew Were False Judge Says
Trump, Lawyers Pushed Claims Of Voter Fraud They Knew Were False, Judge Says https://digitalarizonanews.com/trump-lawyers-pushed-claims-of-voter-fraud-they-knew-were-false-judge-says/ Washington — Communications from conservative lawyer John Eastman show former President Donald Trump and his lawyers pushed claims of voter fraud he knew to be false in federal court and to the public in order to delay the counting of state electoral votes by Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, a federal judge in California said in an order Wednesday.  The revelation from U.S. District Judge David O. Carter came as part of an ongoing legal battle between Eastman, a conservative lawyer behind the legal strategy to reject state electoral votes, and the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol over emails it subpoenaed from Eastman.  Eastman has sought to keep the emails — from an account he used while serving as dean at Chapman University — from the select committee, asserting they are covered by attorney-client and work product privilege. Carter has been reviewing the records to determine whether Eastman’s privilege assertions apply to the materials sought by the House panel. In his 18-page order, Carter focused on a subset of 536 documents protected by attorney-client and work product privileges, and whether they should be disclosed under the crime-fraud exception, which applies to documents and communications that were in furtherance of illegal or fraudulent conduct. The judge said the crime-fraud exception applies to eight communications, and he ordered all eight to be turned over to the select committee. Four of the eight, Carter wrote, were documents “in which Dr. Eastman and other attorneys suggest that — irrespective of the merits — the primary goal of filing [lawsuits] is to delay or otherwise disrupt the January 6 vote.”  He cites one email from Trump’s attorneys stating that “[m]erely having this case pending in the Supreme Court, not ruled on, might be enough to delay consideration of Georgia.” “This email, read in context with other documents in this review, make clear that President Trump filed certain lawsuits not to obtain legal relief, but to disrupt or delay the January 6 congressional proceedings through the courts,” Carter wrote. “The court finds that these four documents are sufficiently related to and in furtherance of the obstruction crime.” The remaining four, the judge said, “demonstrate an effort by President Trump and his attorneys to press false claims in federal court for the purpose of delaying the January 6 vote. The evidence confirms that this effort was undertaken in at least one lawsuit filed in Georgia.” The order cites allegations pushed by Trump and his attorneys in a Dec. 4, 2020, filing to a Georgia state court that Fulton County improperly counted votes from dead people, felons and unregistered voters.  The former president and his lawyers then filed a complaint in federal court citing the same numbers, even though Eastman had relayed “concerns” from Trump’s legal team “about including specific numbers in the paragraph dealing with felons, deceased, moved, etc,” Carter wrote, citing Eastman’s records. Eastman, too, explained in a document reviewed by the court that Trump had been made aware that some of the allegations were inaccurate.  “Although the President signed a verification for [the state court filing] back on Dec. 1, he has since been made aware that some of the allegations (and evidence proffered by the experts) has been inaccurate. For him to sign a new verification with that knowledge (and incorporation by reference) would not be accurate,” Eastman wrote, according to Carter’s order. The incorrect figures, though, were included in the former president’s lawsuit filed in federal court, Carter wrote. “President Trump, moreover, signed a verification swearing under oath that the incorporated, inaccurate numbers ‘are true and correct’ or ‘believed to be true and correct’ to the best of his knowledge and belief,” the judge said. “The emails show that President Trump knew that the specific numbers of voter fraud were wrong but continued to tout those numbers, both in court and to the public. The Court finds that these emails are sufficiently related to and in furtherance of a conspiracy to defraud the United States.” Carter has previously held that Trump and Eastman “more likely than not committed obstruction of an official proceeding” — Congress’s Jan. 6 joint session — in violation of federal law, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Trump Threatens unappreciative Jews
Trump Threatens unappreciative Jews
Trump Threatens ‘unappreciative’ Jews https://digitalarizonanews.com/trump-threatens-unappreciative-jews/ I can’t help feeling sorry for Donald Trump. A man of such selfless kindness and generosity, he has done so much for so many and gotten so little appreciation. Like the Jews. Look at all he’s accomplished for Israel. No one has done more. So much, in fact, that the Israeli people would easily elect him prime minister. At least that’s what he told us Sunday in a posting on his failing oxymoronic Truth Social site, which was later posted on Twitter, where he’s banned from direct posting. His lament came with a threat. American Jews should “get their act together” and be “more appreciative” of his good deeds “before it’s too late.” Too late for what he didn’t say. Just that Jews should be more like “our wonderful evangelicals.” Maybe history’s most litigious politician will sue the Jews, a class action case against all those who haven’t sent him money or voted for him. If he’s looking for credit, he can claim some for the rising tide of antisemitism in this country. Jew-hatred incidents have high a 42-year high, up 34% in the last year alone. His latest post can be expected to contribute to more attacks on Jews. US President Donald Trump departs on travel to West Point, New York from the South Lawn at the White House in Washington, US, December 12, 2020. (credit: REUTERS/CHERISS MAY/FILE PHOTO) Many mainstream media outlets were quick to condemn his warning; the pro-Trump New York Post simply reported that he called on American Jews to be “more appreciative,” and then it listed all the reasons why. Throwing a public fit The appreciation he seeks comes in two forms, according to the Baharat Express News of India, namely “fawning praise or money,” and Trump was upset with Jews for not doing enough of either. Most Jewish organizations were also quick to condemn the disgraced former president’s latest antisemitic screed. The ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt called it “insulting and disgusting.” No surprise there. It is what others didn’t say. Like the Zionist Organization of America. Two days before the infamous tweet, the extreme Right-wing organization announced it plans to honor Trump next month with its Theodor Herzl Medallion “for being the best friend Israel ever had in the White House.” I’ve found nothing on the group’s website responding to Trump’s latest post, much less canceling the award. Also being honored will be House minority leader, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who has his own baggage, to be joined by Trump defender Alan Dershowitz. ZOA’s national chair is David Schoen, one of the disgraced former president’s impeachment lawyers.  THERE’S NOTHING shocking or even a bit surprising about Trump’s latest antisemitic outbursts; similar eruptions have marked his entire political career. Then US-president elect Donald Trump and musician Kanye West pose for media at Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York City, US, December 13, 2016. (credit: REUTERS/ANDREW KELLY) What is alarming, if not particularly surprising, is the silence of Republican leaders and Jewish supporters of the GOP and the twice-impeached former president. As I write this, I’ve been unable to find any criticism from any of them. He collected record amounts of contributions from Jews in his two presidential campaigns – although admittedly, with Trump there is never enough – perhaps more than any other candidate in history. The Republican Jewish Coalition can spend millions, but that won’t convince most Jews to cross over to their side, not with Trump’s antisemitism and not with the party’s increasingly reactionary domestic social policies.  It’s not just Trump. Antisemitism is the inevitable partner of the party’s white supremacy and is reflected in its approach to civil rights, social welfare and a full range of domestic issues. The party of book burners can’t expect to attract the People of the Book. Just hours before issuing his threatening tweet, Trump endorsed Rep. Lee Zeldin for governor of New York. Zeldin is one of only two Jewish Republicans in the current congress; David Kustoff of Tennessee is the other. It is obvious why the other 36 Jewish lawmakers are Democrats and Independents. ANTISEMITISM has become a defining principle for many Republicans. The GOP – Eric Trump says, “It’s no longer the Republican Party, it’s the Trump Party” – is dominated by white supremacists preaching nativism, misogyny, homophobia and fascism – and those who don’t buy in are silent out of fear. The rising star of the party in Congress is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Georgia freshman who is a conspiracy theorist with a penchant for Holocaust comparisons and has become a popular speaker at white supremacy events and Trump rallies. Attendees at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership meeting hold up signs while waiting to see President Donald Trump speak at The Venetian Las Vegas (credit: GABE FRIEDMAN (JTA)) She told The New York Times that she has been talking to Trump about being his running mate if he decides to run in 2024. I’m not sure he can handle the competition for the spotlight, but it is worth noting that vice presidents traditionally head the National Space Council, which could give her access to those Jewish space lasers that she said caused the California forest fires. Enablers in his political party only make things worse The usual Republican response in these outbursts is “whataboutism” – a ploy to distract attention by calling out “what about” antisemitism or something else in the other party. Democrats do have an antisemitism problem that they must deal with, but it is far smaller, and they’ve shown a greater willingness to confront it. That is not an excuse for Republicans ignoring their own problem, especially since it is so widespread and goes all the way up the ranks to the very pinnacle. The response of Republican leadership and prominent Jewish supporters to Trump’s threat to Jews to be “more appreciative” “before it is too late!” is shameful. Their silence is nothing less than acquiescence. The writer is a Washington-based journalist, consultant, lobbyist and former AIPAC legislative director. Read More Here

Iran Is Slowly Entrenching Itself As A Player In The Ukraine War | CNN https://digitalarizonanews.com/iran-is-slowly-entrenching-itself-as-a-player-in-the-ukraine-war-cnn/ Editor’s Note: A version of this story first appeared in CNN’s Meanwhile in the Middle East newsletter, a three-times-a-week look inside the region’s biggest stories. Sign up here. Abu Dhabi CNN  —  As Russia faces growing setbacks in Ukraine, it appears to be increasingly turning to Iran for help, in a development that has sparked concern from the West and Tehran’s regional adversaries. Sources familiar with US intelligence have told CNN that Iran has sent military trainers to Crimea to train and advise the Russian military on the use of Iranian-built drones that Moscow has used to rain down terror on cities across Ukraine. The presence of Iranian personnel in occupied Ukrainian territory would mark a significant escalation in Iran’s involvement in the war in support of Russia, and a new phase in the two countries’ budding military alliance. Reuters on Tuesday also reported that Iran may supply Russia with surface-to-surface missiles. Nasser Kanani, the spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, denied the allegation, saying Iran “has always opposed the continuation of the [Ukraine] war.” Despite their differences, Iran and Russia have been getting closer because they “share the same threat perception,” said Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a hawkish think tank in Washington. “They see a regional order aligned against them by an extra-regional power,” he said, referring to the United States. If Iran sells missiles to Russia, this would mean that it is “moving some of its most accurate, some of its most precise ammunition closer to Europe,” he said. “It is critical to see Iranian involvement with Russia as part of its larger war with the West.” Since Russia’s invasion, the two sanctioned countries have cooperated on political and economic matters, with the military dimension being the latest facet in their relationship. Major General Yahya Safavi, a top military aide to Iran’s supreme leader, on Tuesday boasted that 22 countries are now in the market for Iranian drones. Iran, which before the 1979 revolution imported most of its weapons, now manufactures more than 80% of its military equipment, he was cited as saying by semi-official news agency Fars. Iran and Russia have repeatedly denied the Islamic Republic’s involvement in Ukraine, but analysts have said that the news around Iranian drones isn’t necessarily seen as bad publicity in Tehran. While Russia’s use of Iranian weapons may say more about its desperation in the war than Tehran’s military prowess, experts say that media reports about Iran’s killer drones are bolstering its image as it tries to show the world that its arms can compete in international conflict. “For the Iranians, it is about getting market share, it is about prestige, it is about solidifying alliances,” said Eric Lob, a non-resident scholar at the Middle East Institute’s Iran program, adding that these are incentives for a country that is as isolated as Iran. Iran hasn’t been known as a weapons exporter. Its arms were previously sent to ideologically aligned proxies in Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon, largely to fulfill the Islamic Republic’s own regional agenda. The Ukraine war, say analysts, is changing that. Drones have been in use in the Middle East for several years, but, Lob said, “the Iranians have been working on their indigenous drone capabilities since the Iran-Iraq war, since the 1980s,” giving Tehran ample time for further advancement. The Ukraine war is an opportunity for Iran to observe how its drones are being used in the battlefield, so it can look at the shortcomings and see how to further improve them, said Aniseh Bassiri Tabrizi, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London. She added that “it is possible that what is happening in Ukraine would bring Iran more customers… Iran really wants to be a big player in the arms and drones industry.” But Iran’s foes will also be watching the performance of its drones in Ukraine. Its regional rivals in the Gulf Arab states have been direct targets of drone attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthi group in Yemen, and they have accused the Islamic Republic of supplying those drones. Iran’s archenemy Israel, too, is likely to be watching very closely, said Amir Avivi, a retired senior general in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and founder and CEO of the Israel Defense and Security Forum. “It’s a threat and it’s an opportunity,” he told CNN. “It’s an opportunity for us to really see [Iranian] capabilities on the grounds, learn about what’s going on. On the other hand, one of the things that worries us is that [weapons]… might arrive to Hezbollah, for example, [or] to Hamas.” “It’s a challenge all the time to keep developing and always being one step ahead [of] the capabilities that the other side is developing,” he said. “So we are watching very closely what is happening in Ukraine.” Tehran and Moscow’s growing military ties are, however, “bad news” for the West, he said, “because [we’ve] never seen such a tight and close cooperation between Russia and Iran.” CNN’s Hadas Gold and Abbas Al Lawati contributed to this report. Regime change instigated from Washington is not part of the Biden administration’s policy on Iran, US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley told CNN’s Becky Anderson on Monday. “Our policy is to defend and support the fundamental rights of Iranian citizens just as we want to support the fundamental rights of citizens across the globe. The form of government in Iran will be up to the Iranians to decide,” he said. Nationwide protests have been ongoing for over a month following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini with calls for regime change ringing around the streets. Here’s the latest on this developing story: Professional Iranian rock climber Elnaz Rekabi said that she “accidentally” competed without a hijab during the Asian Championships in South Korea this week, in an interview with state-run IRNA upon her arrival in Tehran Wednesday. At least 880 people were arrested in Iran’s Gilan province, semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported on Monday. The European Union on Monday sanctioned 11 people and four entities for their role in the death of Mahsa Amini and the subsequent crackdown on protesters. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian branded the move “superfluous.” At least 215 people have been killed since Iran’s nationwide protests started in September, Norway-based Iran-focused rights group, Iran HR, said on Monday. . UAE summons EU mission head to explain Borrell comments it says were racist The United Arab Emirates on Monday summoned the acting head of the EU mission in the country, asking for an explanation of what it said were racist comments made by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell last week. The UAE foreign ministry said the remarks were “inappropriate and discriminatory” and “contribute to a worsening climate of intolerance and discrimination worldwide,” state news agency WAM reported. Background: In his remarks at the new European Diplomatic Academy in Bruges, Belgium last week, Borrell called Europe “a garden” and most of the world a “jungle” that “could invade the garden.” “The gardeners have to go to the jungle. Europeans have to be much more engaged with the rest of the world. Otherwise, the rest of the world will invade us,” he said. At a press conference on Monday, Borrell denied that his message was racist or colonialist, news agency EFE reported. Why it matters: The comments have created a stir on social media in the Middle East, with critics denouncing the speech as promoting a colonial narrative. Most of the Middle East had been under European control until the mid-20th century. Israel summons Australian ambassador to protest decision on Jerusalem Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Australia’s ambassador to the country on Tuesday to protest Canberra’s reversal of a decision taken by the previous government to recognize West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said. Background: Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Tuesday justified the reversal of the move by saying the sovereignty of the holy city is a “final status issue that should be resolved as part of any peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian people.” Why it matters: Israel considers all of Jerusalem its “undivided capital.” It captured the eastern sector of the city in the 1967 war and later annexed it in a move not recognized by most of the international community. Palestinians want the occupied eastern sector of the city as the capital of a future state. Son of US citizen detained in Saudi Arabia says his father is ‘nowhere near being dissident’ The son of an American citizen imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for criticizing the Saudi government said Tuesday evening that his father is “nowhere near being a dissident.” Ibrahim Almadi told CNN on Tuesday that if his father had been held in Russia or Iran, “we’d see his name in the headlines every morning.” Background: The US State Department confirmed earlier Tuesday that 72-year-old Saad Ibrahim Almadi has been imprisoned in Saudi Arabia after being given a 16-year sentence for tweets critical of the Saudi government. State Deputy Spokesperson He said the State Department is still going through the process to determine whether Almadi will be designated as “wrongfully detained.” Why it matters: Saudi Arabia has very strict social media rules and has sentenced people in the past over their Twitter activity. In August, Saudi women’s rights campaigner Salma al-Shehab was sentenced to 34 years in prison for her activity on Twitter, according to court documents viewed by CNN. Another woman, Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani, w...

Review: Hale Centre Theatre Presents WAIT UNTIL DARK
Review: Hale Centre Theatre Presents WAIT UNTIL DARK https://digitalarizonanews.com/review-hale-centre-theatre-presents-wait-until-dark/ Although Frederick Knott is not known for an expansive body of work, it has required only three plays, most notable for their intricate plots, to grant him a modest position in the pantheon of mystery playwrights: DIAL M FOR MURDER and WRITE ME A MURDER, both of which received the Edgar Allan Poe Award, and WAIT UNTIL DARK. In a 1995 interview with Mike Giuliano of The Baltimore Sun, Knott clarified his intentions in composing these works. “I was always intrigued with the idea that somebody would plan a crime, and then you see that everything doesn’t turn out right. You can plan a murder in great detail and then put the plan into action, and invariably something goes wrong and then you have to improvise. And in the improvisation, you trip up and make a very big mistake.” This predilection with criminal machinations is clearly apparent in WAIT UNTIL DARK. The play has a glorious but rocky history, as reported by The Guardian at the time of Knott’s death in 2003: box office success in 1966 on Broadway with Lee Remick garnering a Tony nomination and in London with Honor Blackman; the 1967 film starring Oscar-nominated Audrey Hepburn; and then the flop of its 1998 revival, attributable to the miscasting of Marisa Tomei and Quentin Tarantino. Now, this still popular chestnut is on stage and in the round at Hale Centre Theatre in Gilbert Arizona through November 22nd. The story line is pretty famous. Susy and Sam Hendrix live in a downstairs flat in Greenwich Village. It’s 1966, and Hale’s scenic designer and prop master, McKenna Carpenter, has done a yeoman’s job in giving the place an appearance of period authenticity ~ to wit, an old box of Dash laundry detergent, a rotary dial phone, a vintage photo enlarger, and similar trappings. Sam is a photographer who, on a recent business trip, unknowingly, at the behest of another airport passenger, smuggled a doll that contains a fortune in heroin. (Knott did not allow much stage time for this character, which is unfortunate in that, for the time that McKay Moody appeared in this role, we saw a polished talent that merits future attention.) Susy, blinded in a car accident, is essentially a stay-at-home housewife who is helped along in her daily chores by her pre-adolescent upstairs neighbor Gloria (Mason Berchman, appropriately annoying and ultimately lovable). All (well, maybe not all) are blind to the fact that doll is stashed on the premises. The chills and thrills come into play when three con men converge on the apartment in a nefarious scheme to get the bad goods. The criminal mastermind is Harry Roat (an intensely menacing Dennis Kelsch). His co-conspirators, Mike Talman and Sergeant Carlino, whom he’s blackmailed into sinister service, are given fine definition by the performances of David Michael Paul and Karl Haas. As a cohort, they enact a play within a play, assuming false identities and disguises, all to trick a seemingly defenseless woman. No doubt, under normal circumstances, a heist wouldn’t require as convoluted a scenario as playwright Knott has concocted. It may take a while for the audience to get a grip on Roat’s plan. The good news is that, thanks to the careful direction of Jim Roehr and some very fine acting, Hale’s production engenders just the right amount of tension and mystery to keep the audience enthralled in what becomes an intricate cat and mouse game. The mood is amplified by Boyd Cluff’s lighting and sound design, both conspiring to create an atmosphere and tone of gravity and peril. As in all of its iterations, the success and effectiveness of WAIT UNTIL DARK depends on the portrayal of Susy. In this regard, Juli Buehrle delivers a shining performance. She confers upon the role a natural and appealing innocence that makes the character’s emergence as a force to be reckoned with all the more surprising and satisfying. Once vulnerable, she ascends to assert her independence and self-reliance. As she is deprived of one sense, her acuity in other senses expands and serves her well in discerning what danger lurks behind the venetian blinds and shadows of her Greenwich Village apartment. WAIT UNTIL DARK runs through November 22nd at: Hale Centre Theatre ~ 50 West Page Avenue, Gilbert, AZ ~ 480-497-1181 ~ https://haletheatrearizona.com/ ~ boxoffice@haletheatrearizona.com The run time is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note touched its highest level in more than 14 years as soft housing data did little to alter expectations the Federal Reserve will remain aggressive in hiking interest rates as it attempts to wrestle down stubbornly high inflation. The rise in yields weighed on rate-sensitive names like real estate (.SPLRCR) stocks, down 2.56% as the worst-performing S&P sector on the day, and megacap growth names such as Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O). Energy (.SPNY) was the sole S&P sector to end the session in positive territory with a gain of 2.94%. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Abbott Laboratories tumbled 6.5% after reporting lower-than-expected growth in international medical device sales, hit by a strong dollar and supply challenges in China. Netflix shares, however, jumped 13.1% as the best perfomer operformerP 500 after it attracted 2.4 million new subscribers worldwide in the third quarter, more than double the consensus forecast, and guided for 4.5 million additions by year-end. “The bonds are just weighing so heavily on it … it’s a shame to see good earnings be wasted,” said JJ Kinahan, CEO of IG North America in Chicago. “Ultimately earnings drives stocks but when they are being overshadowed it is tough to have that optimism, but ultimately good earnings will lead to stocks going higher, it is a matter of how much the macroeconomic picture is going to continue to hurt those earnings.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) fell 99.99 points, or 0.33%, to 30,423.81, the S&P 500 (.SPX) lost 24.82 points, or 0.67%, to 3,695.16 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) dropped 91.89 points, or 0.85%, to 10,680.51. Fed officials have largely been in sync in their public comments about the need to be aggressive in raising rates to tackle inflation. On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari said job market demand remains strong and underlying inflation pressures probably have not peaked yet. The Fed’s “Beige Book” survey of economic activity showed firms noted price pressures remained elevated, although there was some easing in several districts, while the labor market showed some signs of cooling. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 17, 2022. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid The U.S. central bank is widely expected to raise rates by 75 basis points for the fourth straight time at its November meeting. The Fed’s effect on the housing market continues to grow. Housing starts, a measure of new residential construction, dropped 8.1% in September in the latest sign of the economy losing steam. Housing starts building permits The PHLX Housing Index (.HGX) stumbled -4.50%, marking another sector unlikely to help stocks reverse months of declines, with the three main U.S. indexes still mired in bear markets. Dow components Procter & Gamble Co gained 0.93% and Travelers Companies Inc (TRV.N) rose 4.44% after the companies posted better-than expected quarterly profit. Third-quarter profit growth expectations for S&P 500 companies have edged up to 3% from 2.8% on Tuesday, according to Refinitiv data, still well below the 11.1% increase forecast at the start of July. Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) advanced 0.84% ahead of its earnings after the bell, with focus on any weakness in demand that is starting to weigh on the auto industry. Shares dropped 3.94% following the close as the electric vehicle maker missed revenue estimates for the third quarter. Volume on U.S. exchanges was 11.05 billion shares, compared with the 11.62 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days. Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 3.28-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.69-to-1 ratio favored decliners. The S&P 500 posted 2 new 52-week highs and 9 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 42 new highs and 232 new lows. UAHillel Credits Security Training For Prepared Response To On-Campus Shooting, AZ Jewish Post https://digitalarizonanews.com/uahillel-credits-security-training-for-prepared-response-to-on-campus-shooting-az-jewish-post/ This past Yom Kippur, tragedy struck the University of Arizona campus when beloved professor Thomas Meixner was senselessly murdered by a former graduate student. The shooting occurred very near the UArizona Hillel building, while 25 students, 6 staff, and a guest rabbi were participating in Hillel’s afternoon Yom Kippur programming. Alerted by police activity outside of the building – and with conflicting messages emerging from contacts across campus – Hillel Executive Director Jessica Emerson McCormick made the split-second decision to lock down the Hillel building more than 20 minutes before the first alert was issued via the University’s emergency system. Hillel staff sprang into action, with the assistance of Hillel’s hired security guard, locking down the building and ensuring that the students were secure and as comfortable as possible given the circumstances. When the University gave the order to clear campus, Hillel staff communicated the message as broadly as possible, and secured safe transportation home for students who were currently on site, taking the time to verify they had safely reached their destinations. Unfortunately, Hillel could not host mincha, ne’eilah, or break-fast. It was determined that the incident on campus was not related in any way to Hillel or Yom Kippur. Emerson McCormick promptly updated the community on the situation and highlighted the poise and professionalism of her Hillel team, writing in her email: “I want you to know that I am very proud of our extraordinary staff who acted with integrity, calm, and care all day. As our law enforcement partners have told me, you never know how many lives may be saved by quick and decisive action, and our staff truly met the moment…We were in close touch with the amazing Tucson Jewish community security liaisons, who were able to get us good information and supportive advice, and we are indebted to them both for their response today, and for the trainings they have personally given to our staff.” When asked for comment, Paul Patterson, one of the Jewish Community security directors who oversees training and security upgrades for Jewish organizations in Southern Arizona reiterated the importance of preparing for potential crisis situations. “We are trying hard to prepare people and give them the tools to respond to situations like this. [When dangerous scenarios arise], you don’t rise to the occasion, you fall to your level of preparation.” Patterson went on to encourage any organization who has not done so already to contact one of the community security directors to schedule crisis training. Emerson McCormick concurs: “The recent trainings and updates to our security manual provided by Paul and his colleague Chelsea Gutierrez were invaluable and lifesaving. Because of Paul and Chelsea, Hillel staff knew exactly what to do, felt confident to make big decisions quickly, and felt prepared if, God forbid, the shooter showed up at our front door. This is an incredibly precious Jewish communal resource of JPSA (Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona), and I’m so proud of Tucson’s Jewish community for providing it.” Patterson can be reached at [email protected]. His colleague, Gutierrez, can be reached at [email protected]. The office phone line for the Community Security Directors is (520) 647-8426. Read More Here

What To Know About Trump’s Deposition In E. Jean Carroll’s Suit https://digitalarizonanews.com/what-to-know-about-trumps-deposition-in-e-jean-carrolls-suit/ The former president was asked questions under oath Wednesday in a defamation case brought by the writer E. Jean Carroll, who says he raped her in a dressing room. Send any friend a story As a subscriber, you have 10 gift articles to give each month. Anyone can read what you share. Former President Donald J. Trump has said his accuser is lying and has denied harming her. Credit…Brittany Greeson for The New York Times Oct. 19, 2022Updated 6:36 p.m. ET Three years after the writer E. Jean Carroll sued Donald J. Trump for defamation in New York, the former president submitted to a sworn deposition on Wednesday at Mar-a-Lago, his residence and private club in Florida. What is the case about? Ms. Carroll, in a 2019 book and excerpt in New York magazine, accused Mr. Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s at the department store Bergdorf Goodman. She said that he pushed her against a dressing room wall, pulled down her tights, opened his pants and forced himself upon her. Mr. Trump said that he had never met Ms. Carroll, that she was “totally lying” and that she was not his “type.” In her suit, Ms. Carroll, a longtime advice columnist for Elle magazine, said Mr. Trump’s statements had harmed her reputation. Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, last month asked Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of Federal District Court in Manhattan to delay the deposition while a key question about the suit was considered on appeal. Ms. Habba argued that if her client won that appeal, there would be no need for a deposition. Judge Kaplan denied the request on Oct. 12, finding that Mr. Trump had litigated the case “with the effect and probably the purpose of delaying it.” The trial is scheduled for Feb. 6. Late Wednesday, a spokesman for Ms. Carroll’s lawyers at the firm Kaplan Hecker & Fink said in a statement: “We’re pleased that on behalf of our client, E. Jean Carroll, we were able to take Donald Trump’s deposition today. We are not able to comment further.” Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Ms. Habba, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. What position had Mr. Trump been expected to take? Ms. Habba, in unsuccessfully seeking to postpone the deposition, wrote to Judge Kaplan that her client was nonetheless “ready and eager to sit” for questioning. Mr. Trump has made it clear he has not changed his public position on Ms. Carroll’s allegations. Image E. Jean Carroll has said that she plans to file a second case against the former president under a newly passed state law.Credit…Seth Wenig/Associated Press After Judge Kaplan denied Mr. Trump’s request to delay, Mr. Trump blasted Ms. Carroll in a lengthy social media post, repeating the kind of statements that had prompted her to sue in the first place. “This ‘Ms. Bergdorf Goodman’ case is a complete con job,” Mr. Trump said in his statement. He said that Ms. Carroll was not telling the truth, that he did not know her — and that she was not his type: “While I am not supposed to say it, I will.” What to Know About E. Jean Carroll’s Accusations Card 1 of 5 A looming lawsuit. E. Jean Carroll, a writer who says former President Donald J. Trump raped her in the mid 1990s, plans to use a law passed in May to sue Mr. Trump. Here is what to know: How did Trump respond to her claims? After Ms. Carroll’s account appeared as an excerpt of her then-forthcoming book in New York magazine, Mr. Trump emphatically denied her accusations, saying that she was “totally lying,” that the assault had never occurred and that he could not have raped her because she was not his “type.” Is this Ms. Carroll’s first suit against Mr. Trump? No. In 2019, Ms. Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit against Mr. Trump in state court for branding her a liar. In 2020, while Mr. Trump was still president, the Justice Department took over his defense from private lawyers and moved the case into federal court, where it argued that he could not be sued for defamation because he was president. A District of Columbia court will determine if the suit can proceed. Ms. Carroll’s lawyers said through a spokesman that Mr. Trump’s statement “obviously does not merit a response.” Will the public see Mr. Trump’s deposition? The court has imposed a routine order that would allow Mr. Trump and Ms. Carroll to keep their depositions confidential throughout the pretrial discovery process. It is not known whether Mr. Trump will ask that his deposition be treated as confidential. Neither party’s lawyers released information about the deposition Wednesday. Will the defamation case be short-circuited? After Ms. Carroll sued in state court in Manhattan in 2019, the Justice Department, then led by Attorney General William P. Barr, abruptly intervened on Mr. Trump’s behalf in September 2020, citing a law intended to protect federal employees from litigation stemming from their official duties. The Justice Department moved the case into federal court and sought to substitute the United States for Mr. Trump as the defendant. That maneuver, if successful, would be likely to result in the lawsuit’s dismissal, as the federal government cannot be sued for defamation. In October 2020, Judge Kaplan rejected the department’s attempt to intervene in the case, saying Mr. Trump was not performing official duties when he made his statements about Ms. Carroll. “His comments concerned an alleged sexual assault that took place several decades before he took office,” Judge Kaplan wrote, “and the allegations have no relationship to the official business of the United States.” Last month, a panel of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled by a 2-to-1 vote that the president is an employee of the federal government, but it did not decide whether he was acting in that capacity when he made his statements about Ms. Carroll. The panel asked the District of Columbia Court of Appeals to answer that question, because Mr. Trump had made his statements in Washington. Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Ms. Habba, had argued that her client’s deposition should be delayed until the D.C. appeals court ruled. But in his denial last week, Judge Kaplan noted that a ruling from the D.C. court could take a long time. “Perhaps most significant,” Judge Kaplan wrote, both Ms. Carroll, 78, and Mr. Trump, 76, and perhaps other witnesses in the case, were already of advanced age. “The defendant should not be permitted to run the clock out,” the judge wrote, on Ms. Carroll’s “attempt to gain a remedy for what allegedly was a serious wrong.” The deposition could matter even if Ms. Carroll’s defamation suit dies. Ms. Carroll’s lawyers have said that she plans to file a separate case against Mr. Trump in November under a new state law allowing adult sexual assault victims a one-time opportunity to sue, even if the statute of limitations has expired. That suit will probably end up before Judge Kaplan under the federal court’s rules on related cases. Given the potential filing of the second lawsuit, the judge wrote last week, there was no reason to delay Mr. Trump’s deposition. “The question whether Mr. Trump in fact raped Ms. Carroll is central to this case,” Judge Kaplan wrote. “But it will be central also to the new case.” What other legal actions does the former president face? There are investigations by the Justice Department and Congress into Mr. Trump’s role in the events of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, and the department also has been scrutinizing Mr. Trump’s removal of thousands of sensitive government documents when he left the White House. Mr. Trump’s potential interference in Georgia’s election results is under investigation by the Fulton County, Ga., district attorney. Mr. Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing in those inquiries. Last month, the New York attorney general, Letitia James, sued Mr. Trump, accusing him, three of his children and his family business of lying to lenders and insurers by fraudulently overvaluing his assets. Mr. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, attacked Ms. James and the investigation as “Another Witch Hunt by a racist Attorney General.” The office of Alvin L. Bragg, Manhattan’s district attorney, has also been conducting a criminal investigation into some of the same issues covered in Ms. James’s inquiry. Read More Here

Trump Deposed In Defamation Suit Filed By Magazine Columnist E. Jean Carroll https://digitalarizonanews.com/trump-deposed-in-defamation-suit-filed-by-magazine-columnist-e-jean-carroll/ NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump answered questions under oath Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by E. Jean Carroll, a magazine columnist who says the Republican raped her in the mid-1990s in a department store dressing room. The deposition gave Carroll’s lawyers a chance to interrogate Trump about the assault allegations as well as statements he made in 2019 when she told her story publicly for the first time. Details on how the deposition went weren’t immediately disclosed. “We’re pleased that on behalf of our client, E. Jean Carroll, we were able to take Donald Trump’s deposition today. We are not able to comment further,” said a spokesperson for the law firm representing her, Kaplan Hecker & Fink. Trump has said Carroll’s rape allegation is “a hoax and a lie.” His legal team worked for years to delay his deposition in the lawsuit, which was filed when he was still president. A federal judge last week rejected Trump’s request for another delay, saying he couldn’t “run the clock out on plaintiff’s attempt to gain a remedy for what allegedly was a serious wrong.” Trump’s lawyers didn’t immediately respond Wednesday to a request for comment about the deposition. Carroll was to have been questioned by Trump’s lawyers last Friday. Neither her attorneys nor Trump’s have responded to questions about how that deposition went. The lawyers haven’t disclosed whether the deposition was done in person or remotely, over video. Trump was in Florida on Wednesday. The lawsuit is being handled in a court in New York City. Anything Trump said during his deposition could potentially be used as evidence in an upcoming civil trial. He hasn’t faced any criminal charges related to Carroll’s allegations and any prosecution is unlikely. The deadline for criminal charges over sexual assaults that occurred in the 1990s has long expired. Similar legal deadlines also applied to civil lawsuits over sexual assault. As a result, Carroll chose to sue Trump for defamation over comments he made in 2019 when he denied any wrongdoing. She maintains his denials and attacks on her credibility and character damaged her reputation. However, New York lawmakers recently gave survivors of sexual violence a one-year window to sue their attackers over old assaults. Carroll’s lawyer has told the court she intends to file such a suit against Trump after that window opens in late November. According to Carroll’s account, she bumped into Trump as the two were shopping at the Bergdorf Goodman store across Fifth Avenue from Trump Tower. At the time, Carroll was on television as the host of an advice program, “Ask E. Jean.” She said the two engaged in friendly banter as she tried to help him pick out a gift. But when they were briefly alone in a dressing room, she said he pulled down her tights and raped her. In a recent statement, Trump called that story “a complete con job.” “I don’t know this woman, have no idea who she is, other than it seems she got a picture of me many years ago, with her husband, shaking my hand on a reception line at a celebrity charity event,” Trump said. A Besieged Liz Truss Loses The Second Of Her Top Cabinet Members https://digitalarizonanews.com/a-besieged-liz-truss-loses-the-second-of-her-top-cabinet-members/ LONDON — Struggling British prime minister Liz Truss lost the second of her key cabinet officials on Wednesday as Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned and expressed “concerns about the direction of this government.” Earlier in the day, Truss declared herself to be “a fighter, not a quitter,” amid calls for her own resignation at her first public grilling in Parliament since she saw her economic agenda gutted. Truss and her government are producing more head-spinning headlines than Boris Johnson, who was ousted by his party a few months ago after a string of scandals. In her resignation letter, Braverman emphasized that she was “choosing” to go — suggesting she was not sacked as finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng was last week. As rationale, she said she had mistakenly violated the rules by sending an official document to a lawmaker from her personal email. She made what could be read as an implicit criticism of the prime minister, writing that “the business of government relies upon people accepting responsibility for their mistakes” and that “pretending we haven’t made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can’t see we have made them and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics.” Then she took the opportunity to overtly bash Truss’s government. “Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have had serious concerns about this government’s commitment to honouring manifesto commitments, such as reducing overall migration numbers and stopping illegal migration, particularly the dangerous small boats crossings,” she wrote. Braverman had been pushing for the government to deport immigrants who enter Britain illegally to Rwanda — a plan that has run into a legal wall. This week she had gotten attention for blaming disruptive climate protests on “Guardian-reading tofu-eating wokerati.” Chris Bryant, a Labour lawmaker, celebrated the resignation with a tweet: “Tofu 1: Braverman 0.” In her brief tenure as home secretary, Braverman held one of the four “great offices of state,” the most senior posts in government. When Truss named her cabinet just six weeks ago, it was celebrated as the first in which no White man held one of Britain’s four top seats of political power. But since then, Kwarteng has been replaced by a White male Tory: Jeremy Hunt. And on Wednesday, the prime minister announced that Braverman would be replaced by another prominent White male: Grant Shapps. Among the original four, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is still hanging on the job. He came to the defense of the prime minister in an interview with Sky News, saying that “going through another leadership campaign, defenestrating another prime minister,” won’t “convince the British people that we are thinking about them rather than ourselves” or “convince the market to stay calm.” “Being angry, I get — I totally get it,” he added. “But that’s an emotional response, not a plan.” Truss, though, is in trouble. To Parliament on Wednesday, she offered an apology — of sorts — as she came under criticism for first proposing big tax cuts and then reversing herself after her policies sent financial markets reeling. “I’ve been very clear that I am sorry and I have made mistakes,” she told lawmakers in the House of Commons — where opposition members accused the new prime minister of governing with no viable plan and no mandate and where some of her own party’s members, too, have threatened to revolt. As Truss struggles, so does the British economy. Just a few hours before she appeared in Parliament, the government reported that inflation increased to 10.1 percent in September compared with prices last year. The higher cost of food was driving the spike. The economy was in bad shape before Truss became leader — though she arguably has made things worse. Energy costs are soaring, in part because of Russia’s war in Ukraine; the British pound is taking a beating; and the Bank of England has warned that a recession is likely before year’s end. In her remarks, Truss blamed global head winds for the woes and not her bungled plan for economic growth, which envisioned tax cuts for the well-to-do and corporations, paid for by deep borrowing and more debt. Her appearance at Prime Minister’s Questions, or PMQs — only her third since becoming leader of the country six weeks ago — found Truss mostly on the defensive. She lashed out at the opposition parties. But the opposition has not run Britain for the past 12 years. Her Conservative Party has. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer asked Truss, “What is the point of a prime minister whose promises don’t even last a week?” Starmer said that Truss’s now-defeated economic plan had sent adjustable mortgage rates soaring for homeowners and charged that she had “trashed” the British economy. “How can she be held to account when she is not in charge?” Starmer asked, referring to how her new finance chief, Hunt, had presented an entirely new government policy this week. Some politicians and British media outlets have referred to Hunt as the “de facto prime minister.” “I have acted in the national interest to make sure we have economic stability,” Truss retorted. Reviews from the public have been brutal. One poll from YouGov found that only 10 percent of voters have a favorable view of Truss, making her the most unpopular prime minister the organization has ever tracked. Another survey found that most Conservative Party members — the small section of the population that voted her into office — would now like to see her resign. If Truss stays in office, it may be less because she is a fighter than because Conservative Party lawmakers — who would have to pressure or vote her out — are divided over who might replace her. Things have become so fraught that Conservative Party lawmaker Bob Seely felt the need to apologize for his government’s behavior during an interview with LBC Radio. “I actually want to apologize. I really am getting fed up with this soap drama as much as your listeners are,” he said. “I’m frankly as bemused as everybody else is, and I’m really unhappy with the situation.” Some lawmakers reported that the Conservative Party’s war with itself was on display Wednesday in the House of Commons lobby, ahead of a late-night vote on fracking that was initially billed as a vote of confidence in the government. “I’ve never seen scenes like it at the entrance to a voting lobby,” tweeted Labour lawmaker Ian Murray. “… Two Tory whips dragging people in. Shocking.” Senior Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg told Sky News that “to characterize it as bullying is a mistake.” Read More Here

Heavier traffic can be expected on westbound Interstate 10 in Phoenix as well as Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) in Glendale Thursday afternoon, Oct. 20, prior to the game between the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints. Drivers should expect busier than normal conditions due to a mix of football and regular commuting traffic traveling toward the West Valley, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Kickoff at State Farm Stadium is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Thursday. Fans traveling to the game from the Chandler/southeast Valley region should consider using westbound/northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to bypass I-10 in the downtown Phoenix area. Drivers should allow extra time and try to arrive in the area near the stadium early. The city of Glendale says stadium parking lots will open at 1 p.m. Thursday. Glendale will be closing the following Loop 101 on-ramps from approximately 2 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. to assist with traffic flow: Northbound on-ramps at Indian School Road, Camelback Road and Cardinals Way and the southbound on-ramp at Glendale Avenue. Fans also should practice patience after the game and be prepared for heavier freeway traffic along sections of Loop 101 and I-10 in the West Valley once fans have left the stadium. Glendale will close the southbound Loop 101 off-ramps at Cardinals Way and Camelback Road from approximately 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The north- and southbound Loop 101 HOV off-ramps at Maryland Avenue will be closed from 5:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as part of the city’s post-game traffic plan. State Attorney Predicts Donald Trump Indictment After Elections
State Attorney Predicts Donald Trump Indictment After Elections https://digitalarizonanews.com/state-attorney-predicts-donald-trump-indictment-after-elections/ Charges could include conspiracy to defraud the United States or obstruction of an official proceeding. Before former President Donald Trump eyes 2024, perhaps he should have his attention on matters more pressing. A South Florida prosecutor believes the Justice Department will up its game on indictments, after Election Day, related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riots and Trump’s handling of confidential government documents.  “We have reports that involve nuclear materials, we have reports that involve foreign spies, but we don’t know (those allegations) for sure,” said Dave Aronberg, State Attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit. “And that’s where I’m guessing (the documents do) involve that, and I think he will be indicted after the midterms.” Aronberg, a regular on cable news networks regarding legal matters, spoke to the Flagler Tiger Bay Club. The club invited him to get his look at what might come out of the Mar-a-Lago confidential documents investigation, and how the elections may shake out in Florida and nationally. There are a number of layers between Trump and what his supporters did Jan. 6, he noted.  “If you’re going to charge the former President with any crimes, you have to tie him directly to the violence,” Aronberg said. “It’s not so easy to do.” Seditious conspiracy, a charge which Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes faces, is notoriously hard to prove, and there would have to be evidence of an agreement with Trump regarding the violence. Trump could be charged with other offenses, though, like conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of an official proceeding. “There’s a federal judge, Judge (David) Carter, who said that it is more likely than not that former President Trump committed those two crimes,” Aronberg said. “So, those two are in play. But again, you have to have a direct link between Trump and the violence on that day for prosecutors to charge. “Based on what we know now, not sure.” On the documents, though, there is a direct line, he said. “He keeps making admissions in his public statements,” all of which really hurts him, Aronberg said. “It shows knowledge, it shows intent.” There’s also the matter of whether it’s in the government’s interest to prosecute Trump. “To get there, you have to show something that is really damaging to our national security,” Aronberg said. “If the documents matter is about Kim Jong-un’s love letters, it’s not going to happen, you’re not going to see a prosecution.” Aronberg, a Democrat and former state Senator, made jokes about how the Republican bastion of Flagler County felt like an away game, and he hoped whatever he said wouldn’t gain him the attention of Gov. Ron DeSantis. “The goal here today is for me to be honest and interesting and provocative,” Aronberg said, “but not so honest, interesting and provocative to get suspended by this Governor.”  Post Views: 0 Read More Here

Pence Breaks From Trump Allies On Foreign Policy Blasts Putin Apologists In GOP

Pence Breaks From Trump Allies On Foreign Policy, Blasts ‘Putin Apologists’ In GOP https://digitalarizonanews.com/pence-breaks-from-trump-allies-on-foreign-policy-blasts-putin-apologists-in-gop/ Former Vice President Mike Pence took a firm stance Wednesday on support for Ukraine, warning against “Putin apologists” in the Republican Party and dismissing a push by some close allies of former President Donald Trump for an isolationist foreign policy. Mr. Pence called for increased support for Ukraine and a tougher stance on aggression by Moscow and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I believe that conservatives must make it clear that Putin must stop and Putin will pay. There can be no room in the conservative movement for apologists for Putin,” Mr. Pence said Wednesday at the Heritage Foundation. The former vice president said the U.S. must stand with Ukraine as Russia continues to wage an “unconscionable war” in the nation. “We must continue to provide Ukraine with the resources to defend themselves,” Mr. Pence said. “We must continue to bring economic pressure to the most powerful economy in the world, on Russia, and we must continue to provide the generosity, compassion, and prayers of the American people until Russia relents and until peace is restored.” Mr. Pence’s comments show a clear break from a growing number of “America First” Republicans in Congress who have resisted providing more aid to Ukraine. Earlier this year, 57 House Republican and 11 GOP senators voted against a $40 billion aid package to Ukraine, many of whom have accused the Biden administration of putting the needs of foreign allies over Americans. “$40 billion dollars but there’s no baby formula for American mothers and babies,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican. Rep. Paul Gosar, Arizona Republican, called the aid package an example of putting the country last. “Biden wants to send FORTY BILLION that has been taken from taxpayers to Ukraine while our borders remain wide open with historic crossings. This regime prioritizes every other country before it even thinks about our own — this is the definition of America Last,” Mr. Gosar said. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, North Carolina Republican, event went as far as referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a “thug” and the Ukrainian government “incredibly corrupt and incredibly evil.” Other GOP lawmakers said they opposed the aid on fiscal grounds, saying the package was bloated. Mr. Pence’s comments came on the heels of new audio recordings of Mr. Trump released by veteran journalist Bob Woodward that included conversations in which the former president praised Mr. Putin and other authoritarian leaders. “I like Putin,” Mr. Trump said in a 2020 interview. “Our relationship should be a very good one. I campaigned on getting along with Russia, China, and everyone else.” Mr. Pence is walking a fine line, suggesting he wanted to marry the movement of Ronald Reagan to the populist ‘America First’ movement under Mr. Trump, as speculation rises about his plans for 2024. “Now more than ever, we ought to be thinking not just about Election Day or about the day after Election Day, [but] what the agenda will be for really bringing America back, which you and I all know is by returning America to the principles of the American founding,” Mr. Pence said. Mr. Pence unveiled his vision for the country in a policy layout that focused on enhancing the anti-abortion and religious liberty movement, promoting patriotic education with less federal intervention, and strengthening the national defense, among other things. Mr. Pence’s plan was created with the aid of several Republican and conservative leaders, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista, former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and former U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. The proposed agenda calls for a limited government approach to health care, innovation, and education, and could be considered a blueprint for a 2024 presidential run. Mr. Pence’s political group, Advancing American Freedom, has raised $10 million since it launched in April 2021. It has announced a goal to raise $35 million for itself and a sister organization. The former vice president has also shown up several times this year in Iowa — a state that plays a critical role in the early presidential nominating process. Mr. Pence, who has spoken out about his differences with Mr. Trump regarding the 2021 Capitol riot in which rioters called for him to be hanged, also discussed the need to uphold the Constitution at all costs. He did not mention his actions on Jan. 6. “We will stand for the Constitution. We will hold its principles, even when it would be politically expedient to do otherwise,” he said. “If conservatives don’t defend the Constitution, we won’t just lose elections. We lose our country.” He gave credit to Mr. Trump for fostering strong national security, and touted the achievements of his administration on the world stage. “I believe the agenda of the Trump-Pence administration was a marriage of an apologetic commitment to the foundations of the conservative agenda with thoughtful populist priorities driven by the aspirations of the American people,” Mr. Pence said. “We fought for a strong national defense, for free market and free enterprise principles, less government, less taxes, less regulation, and we stood every day for the sanctity of human life.” A recent poll showed Mr. Pence lagging far behind Mr. Trump, if he seeks another bid for the White House, but doing well in a field of candidates that doesn’t include his former boss.  A September survey by the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and the Harris Poll had Mr. Pence as the non-Trump favorite among 490 registered Republican voters. Mr. Trump had 58% of support, compared with Mr. Pence with 13% and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis with 9%. Minus Mr. Trump, Mr. Pence carried 32% of support over Mr. DeSantis’s 20%. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who was also in the non-Trump poll, had 14%. The poll, conducted Sept. 15-16, had an error margin of +/-4%. Read More Here

Judge: Trump Allegedly Engaged In
Judge: Trump Allegedly Engaged In https://digitalarizonanews.com/judge-trump-allegedly-engaged-in/ A California federal judge has found evidence that former President Donald Trump allegedly engaged in “a conspiracy to defraud the United States,” ordering the transfer of four emails from Trump attorney John Eastman to the House committee investigating the Capitol attacks. In an 18-page order Wednesday, U.S. District Judge David Carter said the emails were used to press false claims of voter fraud in Georgia even though “President Trump knew that the specific numbers of voter fraud were wrong” and that Trump “continued to tout those numbers, both in court and to the public.” “The Court finds that these emails are sufficiently related to and in furtherance of a conspiracy to defraud the United States,” the judge concluded as part of a continuing review of Eastman’s communications and the lawyer’s efforts to resist disclosure to the House committee. It is the second time this year the judge has described damning evidence involving Trump. In March, Carter ruled that Trump “corruptly attempted to obstruct” the Jan. 6, 2021 certification of President Joe Biden’s election. “The illegality of the plan was obvious,” Carter said in the earlier ruling that emerged from the same review of Eastman’s communications. . Man Arrested For Allegedly Groping People, Exposing Himself At Leisure World In Mesa https://digitalarizonanews.com/man-arrested-for-allegedly-groping-people-exposing-himself-at-leisure-world-in-mesa/ MESA, AZ — A man has been arrested for allegedly touching people inappropriately at Leisure World Community in Mesa. On October 12, John Grefe was arrested by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit for eight counts of sexual abuse, as well as two counts of indecent exposure. MCSO says Grefe exposed himself or inappropriately hugged/touched victims while servicing their golf carts at their residence. Grefe is a resident of the Leisure World Community and was known to be handy with golf cart repairs, MCSO said. He reportedly often completed repairs within the community for free or a nominal fee. Some of the victims claim they were groped while hugged, Grefe exposed himself, or Grefe made unwanted inappropriate sexual comments to them. MCSO detectives completed their investigation and submitted the case to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for charging, which later resulted in an arrest warrant being issued for Grefe’s arrest. 'Person Of Interest' In Oklahoma Bicyclists' Slayings Arrested In Florida https://digitalarizonanews.com/person-of-interest-in-oklahoma-bicyclists-slayings-arrested-in-florida/ Police arrested a “person of interest” in the slayings of four Oklahoma bicyclists in central Florida — more than 1,200 miles away — authorities said Tuesday. Joseph Kennedy, 67, was arrested in Daytona Beach Shores in a car “that was reported stolen to the Okmulgee County Sheriff’s Office” on Monday, police in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, said in a statement. Mark Chastain, 32, Billy Chastain, 30, Mike Sparks, 32, and Alex Stevens, 29, were reported missing last week and were found shot and dismembered bodies days later in the Deep Fork River, Okmulgee police said. From left, Alex Stevens, Mark Chastain, Billy Chastain, and Mike Sparks.Okmulgee Police Department via Facebook Just after they named Kennedy as a “person of interest” Monday afternoon, police said the man’s blue Chrysler PT Cruiser was found “abandoned behind a business” in Morris. Kennedy was driving near the 2800 block of South Atlantic Avenue at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when a police license plate reader detected Kennedy’s vehicle, listing the car as stolen and its driver as “missing,” Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Director Michael Fowler said. Kennedy was arrested without incident and made no statement to officers, Fowler said. “Upon confirming [with police in Oklahoma] his status as a missing person we were notified that he is a person of interest in a quadruple homicide,” Fowler said. Kennedy, who has an address listed in Okmulgee, on Wednesday was ordered held without bail by a judge in Florida. He’s being held on suspicion of grand theft of a motor vehicle and as a fugitive from justice, according to Corrections Department records. Oklahoma authorities said they want to bring Kennedy back to their state in connection with a 2012 shooting in Okmulgee. Kennedy in 2013 pleaded no contest to felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor obstructing a police officer, court records showed. To avoid prison time, Kennedy had to meet conditions of probation until May 15, 2023, court records showed. Oklahoma prosecutors said in court papers filed Tuesday that Kennedy breached his conditions and now should be sentenced for the two 2012 charges. The assault charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years behind bars. “There were a number of people who had broken into his salvage yard, and Mr. Kennedy alleged that he saw a gun, was fearful for his life and shot in self-protection,” Kennedy’s defense lawyer in that case, Luke Gaither, said Tuesday. “The state clearly had a different side of that.” The Okmulgee police statement Tuesday did not name Kennedy as a suspect in the deaths of the four bicyclists. It was not immediately clear Tuesday afternoon whether Kennedy had hired or been assigned an attorney. Kennedy got on the radar of investigators after they searched his scrap yard and found evidence of a “violent event” on an “adjoining property,” Okmulgee Police Chief Joe Prentice said. Okmulgee police initially interviewed Kennedy on Friday, Prentice said, before he apparently left the state. The four men were reported missing early last week after they left on their bicycles. Prentice later said the men had been planning to pull off an undisclosed crime. Investigators base the belief on the word of a witness who had been invited to go along as the men planned to “hit a lick big enough for all of them,” Prentice said, using slang for a profitable criminal act. On The Roads: Which American Cities Are The Best, Worst To Drive In? https://digitalarizonanews.com/on-the-roads-which-american-cities-are-the-best-worst-to-drive-in/ (© PiyawatNandeenoparit – stock.adobe.com) Americans lose an average of $564 per year wasting time sitting in traffic congestion. Personal finance website WalletHub released its report 2022’s Best & Worst Cities to Drive In to determine the most driver-friendly places in the United States. WalletHub compared the 100 largest American cities across 30 key metrics. Data includes average gas prices, annual hours in traffic congestion per commuter and auto repair shops per capita. According to the report, the best city to drive in is Raleigh, N.C., followed by Plano, Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas, Greensboro, N.C. and Winston-Salem, N.C. Orlando, Fla. is no. 10 on the list of best cities to drive in. On the other end, the worst city to drive in is Philadelphia, followed by Detroit, Oakland, Calif., San Fransisco, Calif., and Chicago. Rounding out the top 10 worst cities to drive in are New York City, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Md., Seattle and Los Angeles. The lowest traffic fatality rate per 100,000 residents is in Honolulu at 2.30, which is 14.9 times lower than Memphis’s 34.26, the highest fatality rate. In Gilbert, Az., per 1,000 residents are the fewest car thefts at 0.58, which is 26.4 times fewer than in Oakland, Calif., the city with the most at 15.33. The lowest average gas price, $3.12 per gallon, is in Laredo, Texas, and is 1.8 times lower than in San Fransisco, the city with the highest at $5.46 per gallon. Corpus Christi, Texas has the lowest average parking rate at $1 for two hours, which is 38.4 times lower than in Boston, which has the highest parking rate at $38.40 for two hours. Experts offered saving tips for drivers while gas prices are on an upward trend. “Try to limit travel at speeds higher than 65 or 70 mph,” Professor and Faculty Fellow at Texas A&M University Dominique Lord said in a press release. “It has been shown that the optimal speed is about 55 mph, where going above or below that value will increase gas consumption. Hence, going slightly faster than 55 mph may be reasonable. Try to reduce sudden acceleration or deceleration events, which increase fuel consumption.” According to Dr. Hesham A. Rakha, Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Mobility at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, drivers should choose gas-efficient routes. “Faster travel time routes are not necessarily more energy efficient. Do not be aggressive on the gas pedal. We found that the top 10 percent of the aggressive events on a trip consume 25 percent of the total fuel of the trip,” Rakha said. When will more self-driving vehicles be on American roads than human-driven vehicles? “We have a very long way to go before that will happen — probably 75-100 years,” Dr. Daniel V. McGehee, Director of the National Advanced Driving Simulator, Industrial and Systems Engineering; Emergency Medicine, Public Health, Public Policy at University of Iowa, said in a press release. “It will take over 25 years for 90 percent of the U.S. fleet to have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane keeping (which is not automation).” Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UVA Brian L. Smith said it will take time for a large number of self-driving vehicles to be seen on American roadways. The majority will be in cities with on-demand services, such as Uber and Lyft. “It will take longer to see them in more suburban and rural areas. The exception to this will be large trucks. I expect to see partially automated platoons of trucks in the near future to allow for more efficient and safe freight movement,” Smith said in the press release. Experts offered opinion on what local authorities can do to reduce traffic and improve safety. “Investments in balanced, resilient transportation systems that focus on moving people and goods instead of vehicles are a good place to start,” Dr. Kyle Shelton, Director of the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Minnesota, said in the press release. For instance, in urban areas, quality public transportation operated by professional drivers not only moves people more efficiently and safely than single-occupancy vehicles, but also frees up roadway space for shippers and commercial and emergency vehicles…Building streets in ways that encourage a range of users to interact safely is a must. Most roads today are oriented towards drivers. This orientation leaves other users on the periphery and, lacking infrastructure, puts vulnerable users such as pedestrians and folks on bikes at risk…The way we engineer our roads, especially those with multiple users, can go a long way toward signaling to drivers how to share space.” McGehee said that local authorities can enact hands-free only laws when it comes to smartphone use while driving, as well as have and enforce seatbelt laws for all seating positions, lower BAC levels to 0.05 percent or higher, and enact strict teen driver license systems.
