The Mexican government filed another U.S. gun lawsuit, this time against five U.S. gun shops and distributors it claims are responsible for the flow of illegal weapons into Mexico. “The five worst stores” were named in the lawsuit, including three gun outlets in Tucson, Phoenix and Yuma.

Former US president Donald Trump claims he can declassify top secret documents just ‘by thinking about it’
Christina Bobb, the attorney for Donald Trump who signed a false certification telling the Department of Justice that the ex-president had turned over all classified documents in his possession, is now cooperating with federal prosecutors.
She reportedly spoke with investigators on Friday.
The attorney is also believed to have provided information on two other lawyers connected with the statement: Mr Trump’s previous lead counsel Evan Corcoran, and lawyer Boris Epshteyn.
Over the weekend, Mr Trump defended keeping classified documents at his Florida resort by accusing former president George HW Bush of doing the same, saying the 41st president “took millions and millions of documents to a former bowling alley pieced together with what was then an old and broken Chinese restaurant”.
Mr Trump’s comment drew a sharp response on Twitter from Bush’s son, Jeb Bush.
“I am so confused,” he said: “My dad enjoyed a good Chinese meal and enjoyed the challenge of 7 10 split. What the heck is up with you?”

HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) — Just weeks before Election Day in Texas, once again there is big money, new signs of shifting voters and bold predictions of an upset that will turn heads across the U.S.
But this time, it’s coming from Republicans.
“We are going to turn the Rio Grande Valley red,” said Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, kicking off a rally in the Texas border city of Harlingen.
As Democrats embark on another October blitz in pursuit of flipping America’s biggest red state, Republicans are taking a swing of their own: making a play for the mostly Hispanic southern border on Nov. 8 after years of writing off the region that is overwhelmingly controlled by Democrats.
The task — like Democrat Beto O’Rourke ‘s underdog campaign to unseat Abbott — is an uphill climb. But it is another way Republicans are putting plenty at stake on the Texas border, given that they are already refocusing the final sprint of the 2022 midterms on portraying the 1,200-mile boundary as rife with escalating danger and disorder as record number of migrants enter from Mexico.
Border Democrats say dramatic moves to bus and fly migrants across the country will backfire with voters, but also acknowledge they can no longer coast into office.
Still, the rare sight of contested races on the Texas border has widened cracks in an important Democratic stronghold two years after former President Donald Trump’s significant gains with Hispanic voters during the 2020 election caused both parties to scramble in unexpected ways.
“This is the first time we’ve ever had this many competitive races where the Democrats are like, ‘What are we going to do?’” said Republican Carlos Cascos, a onetime border Democrat who switched parties and later served as Abbott’s first secretary of state.
He’s doesn’t see Republicans sweeping races in the Rio Grande Valley, home to roughly 1.5 million people. But, he says, “I think this area has been taken for granted a lot. In the Valley, you’re born two things: a Catholic and a Democrat. Things are changing.”
Democrats still hold advantages in South Texas — decades of incumbency, a culture of residents voting Democratic, and more moderate candidates who are less vulnerable to GOP attacks on the left and more critical of President Joe Biden when his approval ratings remain low and inflation is still high.
But Republican Rep. Mayra Flores’ victory in a special election this year, becoming the first Texas Latina in the U.S. House, reflected the shifting ground. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, a South Texas Democrat, switched districts to more favorable territory and is hoping to unseat her for a full term in November.
Democrats have dismissed dramatic moves by Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, two potential 2024 presidential contenders, to send migrants to places like Washington, New York and Martha’s Vineyard. But Republicans counter that more liberal voters in big cities far from the border are ignoring problems that are hitting largely working-class South Texans.
Running for what’s arguably Texas’ most competitive House seat, which stretches from east of San Antonio to border communities including McAllen, Republican Monica De La Cruz blamed “an elite class that just does not get it because illegal immigration has virtually no impact on their lives.”
“Wall Street bankers don’t have to worry about a poor Central American migrant undercutting their wages,” De La Cruz told reporters recently. She is running against Democrat Michelle Vallejo in the district that Gonzalez is vacating.
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is set to campaign with Flores and de la Cruz on the border Monday — an unusual display of national GOP political force for South Texas.
Those efforts to control the political narrative coincides with the Republican Party opening 38 minority outreach community centers around the country, including in McAllen and another border city, Laredo, as well as in heavily Hispanic Houston and San Antonio.
Some offer services like tutoring for U.S. citizen classes and tax advice. They’ve also hosted movie nights, pot-luck dinners and business roundtables, as well as courses on topics like crypto currency. Some have been open for more than a year.
The GOP says it has spent millions on Hispanic outreach nationwide, including 30-plus ad buys in Spanish-language media encompassing digital, TV, radio and print. It also has a record 32 Hispanic Republican nominees on House ballots around the country, although many are underdogs.
Democrats, for their part, opened a national field office in McAllen in April and have three staffers working on the area’s congressional race, the party’s first such investment in recent memory.
Richard Gonzales, Democratic Party chair of Hidalgo County, which includes McAllen, said party officials hold weekly Zoom calls with O’Rourke’s campaign to coordinate efforts that have focused on boosting turnout, especially among non-active voters. He said gains in 2020 by Trump and the Republicans were real but “very candidate specific” and unlikely to “translate to future races.”
O’Rourke, who in the past ran unsuccessfully for Senate and president, also heads a nonprofit called Powered By People. In 2020, he organized phone banking that saw volunteers contact voters in Webb County — which includes Laredo, where less than 40% of eligible voters cast ballots in the 2018 Senate race — hoping to boost turnout for Biden.
The group registered thousands of Webb County voters, and eventually saw turnout climb to 50% of eligible voters in the 2020 election. But Trump sharply increased his support in Webb County, taking nearly 26,000 votes, about double his 2016 raw vote total — and captured about 38% overall support there, compared with about 23% in 2016.
“People want to say that the Democrats are done down here, that the Republicans are taking over. That is not true,” Gonzales said. “What this has done is it has woken up the Democrats down here and made us realize, ‘Hey, we can’t take this for granted anymore.’”

U.S. stock futures traded lower on Tuesday morning after the Nasdaq Composite closed at its lowest in two years during the regular session.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell by 179 points, or 0.61%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.62% and 0.6%, respectively.
Stocks closed lower Monday, with the Nasdaq Composite falling 1% following a drop in semiconductor stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed nearly 94 points, or 0.3%, while the S&P 500 declined about 0.8%.
Investors weighed comments from JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, who warned that the U.S. would likely fall into a recession over the next “six to nine months,” and said the S&P 500 could fall another 20% depending on whether the Federal Reserve engineers a soft or a hard landing for the economy.
Those remarks came at the start of a big week for third quarter bank earnings, and ahead of Wednesday’s producer price report, Thursday’s consumer price index report for September and Friday’s retail sales numbers, also for last month.
Investor reaction is focused solely on how the Federal Reserve will react to the economy as it works to dampen inflation.
“There’s always this idea of a Fed pivot coming right around the corner, and they’re just going to tighten their belts to bring inflation down without affecting the economy more broadly,” Dan Greenhaus, chief strategist and economist at Solus Alternative Asset Management, said Monday on CNBC’s “Closing Bell: Overtime.”
“All of that was always hopes and dreams. And the most likely outcome was … what history shows always happens, which is the Fed tightens, they tighten too much, they cause an economic dislocation, the market goes down. Full stop,” he added.
U.S. Treasury yields climb, 30-year hits highest level since 2013
The yield on the 30-year U.S. Treasury note climbed as high at 3.941%, reaching its highest level in nine years.
The 10-year yield rose to 3.963% and the 2-year yield inched higher to 4.318%. Rates fell earlier this month but started to rise again after positive economic data in the U.S. led investors to increase bets on further rate hikes by the Fed.
Bond yields move inversely to prices and one basis point is equivalent to 0.01%.

Kevin Simpson’s top stock picks include UPS, Qualcomm
Kevin Simpson said his top stock picks include UPS and Qualcomm as he looks for names with strong dividend growth in a volatile market.
The founder and CIO at Capital Wealth Planning said he has a 5% allocation to UPS, noting its healthy dividend yield of nearly 4%.
“Over the past 10 years, they just continue to raise that dividend, and that’s our playbook,” Simpson said Monday on CNBC’s “Closing Bell: Overtime.” “If we can have stocks that turn a profit, they have an EBITDA, they return cash to shareholders, certainly in a time period like this, that type of methodology can work.”
Simpson said he’s using the decline in semiconductor stocks to build a position in Qualcomm, which has a 2.6% dividend yield. Chip stocks slumped on Monday after the Biden administration announced new measures that would limit U.S. companies’ ability to sell advanced computing chips to China.
The investor, who said he has a 14% cash allocation, said he expects “the next three to six months are going to provide ample opportunity to buy amazing names” as the Federal Reserve maintains a hawkish stance against inflation.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – A Phoenix woman says two pit bulls charged at her and her two-year-old wheaten terrier, Stanley leaving her dog so severely injured that his leg had to be amputated.
A routine walk for Heather Isgrigg and Stanley in her Phoenix neighborhood near 19th Street and Campbell Avenue turned to terror within seconds. Across the street from them were two pit bulls. Isgrigg says the pit bull’s owner bent down to pick something up when the dogs took off.
“As soon as she lost control of the dog, she started screaming and I knew it was going to be bad,” Isgrigg said. “It was pure terror and then it was just two pit bulls coming right at us. I froze and didn’t know what to do.” One of the pit bulls immediately latched onto Stanley’s arm, ripping it to its bone. Isgrigg says she tried pulling the dogs apart with their owner for 20 minutes. “We were stuck for what felt like eternity,” she said.
Finally, two strangers stepped in. One of the strangers handed Isgrigg a skateboard, and the other gave her mace. That was the only thing that got the dog to let go of Stanley. “It looked like the whole top of his foot was gone. Everything was bloody.”
Isgrigg says the worst part is that the dog’s owner ran away and still has not come forward. “During the altercations she was screaming that she was sorry so I really believed that she would do the right thing.” Isgrigg rushed Stanley to the veterinarian, where doctors gave her two options: try to repair the leg with months of daily bandage changes or amputation, which they agreed would be better long-term. Stanley now only has three legs.
Isgrigg says Stanley is hanging in there, but what happened now makes her scared to walk in her neighborhood. “I don’t think I’m going to walk Stanley for a really long time, and I think he’s going to be pretty traumatized,” she said. Isgrigg says she’s looking into getting Stanley a prosthetic leg.
Maricopa County Animal Control says they are working on this case and asking anyone with information on the dogs or their owner to please call 602-506-7387.

Renters beware: Online fraud in competitive Arizona housing market is all too familiar – red flags to look for
PHOENIX – Whether you’re looking to rent or you just bought a home, you could be a target of online fraud.
Rent isn’t getting any cheaper in the Valley, instead, prices are up in most Phoenix metro cities. Here’s a glimpse into how easy it is for someone to capitalize on this demand from a computer or phone.
“This is the Zillow rental app,” Ahmed Saber said. “It has pictures of my property from when I first purchased it.”
He was surprised and concerned, to say the least.
“I purchased this property with the intent of renting it, putting it on the market as an investment property. I was researching the area on Zillow and I found a house that looked a lot like mine and I looked closer and realized it was actually my house,” Saber said.
His Chandler home was in fact listed for rent on Zillow. Saber’s name was listed as the contact, but the phone number wasn’t his.
For about two weeks straight, the listing remained online. He reported it as fraudulent to Zillow.
“Pretending to be me and using the Zillow platform to get tenants into this house. Pretending to be me and collecting income from people,” he said.
As a test, we called the number listed on Zillow for this home. No one answers but when you hang up, a text message is sent from the contact saying “This is Zillow …” and it asks for additional details to get the rental process started.
Saber quickly put up a sign on his house reading, “This home is not for rent.”
“At the end, whoever is going to be the victim, they’ll find me, the real owner, and it’s going to be a headache for me,” he said.
Cost of living is way up
The cost to rent an apartment in Phoenix, according to Rent.com, has gone up across the board. Three-bedroom apartments saw the largest increase with a 33% hike from last year, reaching about $2,396.
A studio alone is 16% more to rent compared to 2021, equaling about $1,125.
As for rent in cities across the Valley, the average one-bedroom costs more than 1,600 a month.
‘I should have known’
“It was brand new, everything was new in the pictures,” Vanessa Lowell said. She was trying to find somewhere more affordable to live, and she thought she found just that on Facebook Marketplace. “I should have known.”
It led to a string of text messages with someone using the name “Thomas Gabriel.”
Messages say he was waiting on his lawyer for documents but said that she could pay various fees by using the Zelle app to send money to different email addresses.
Paying those fees almost caused her to be evicted from where she was currently living after she spent more than a thousand bucks in just days.
She never heard from “Thomas Gabriel” again.
“It really frustrates me since I’m on disability. I have a limited income … that’s all I got,” she said.
How to keep safe from online scams
“Before you may get your hopes up, really think, if it could be a realistic price at this current point of time,” explained Ligia Chang with the Better Business Bureau.
She advises always verifying and confirming the listing, working with a reputable rental company, and never sending money immediately.
“If they ask you to send money upfront, they could claim that it’s for a background check to hold a spot, or for your first month’s rent, or even a security deposit. It’s important to never send money without seeing the property first and signing a lease,” Chang said.
What’s next
The rental listing for Saber’s home is no longer online.
FOX 10 reached out to Zillow to find out if this is a common issue, and a spokesperson says not at all.
“Zillow strives to provide a safe online platform, and we go to great lengths to monitor activity and fully inform our users of the risks of scams on the internet and how to protect themselves. Our teams monitor activity on the site in several different ways, actively screening for possible fraud or scams and preventing them from getting posted. If a listing is found to be fraudulent, it is removed from our site as quickly as possible. Our ‘How to Recognize and Avoid Rental Fraud’ page and ‘Beware of Scams and Other Internet Fraud’ page explain how to look out for red flags such as requests for wire transfers or long-distance inquiries, and provide other valuable information about how to avoid bad actors in the housing market,” read a statement from Zillow.
We also contacted Meta Platforms, Facebook’s parent company, about Lowell’s situation but didn’t get a response.

Republicans must work together and avoid infighting on topics like former President Donald Trump in order to bring a “red wave” to fruition this November, GOP candidates and leaders said at a Polk County Republican rally Monday night.
Alongside Iowa conservative leaders, Wyoming Republican congressional candidate Harriet Hageman and former California governor candidate Larry Elder rallied for 3rd Congressional District candidate Zach Nunn as well as other GOP state and federal candidates in Polk County at the Horizon Event Center in Clive.
While the conservative figures spent much of their time talking about the need to win back Congress to fight against President Joe Biden’s administration, they also spoke about better times under former President Donald Trump.
Hageman won a contentious Republican primary against incumbent U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump for his connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. Cheney chairs the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot and Trump’s role in spurring the effort to overturn the 2020 election results. Hageman was endorsed by Trump in the primary race.
While the Wyoming Republican did not name Trump in her speech, she said she would investigate the FBI and critics of Trump if elected.
“We’re going to start investigating people like Hunter Biden,” Hageman told the crowd of more than 200. “… and the people who raided Mar-a-Lago, and the people who pushed forward with the ‘Russia, Russia, Russia’ hoax, and all the other things that need to be looked into.”
Cheney has alleged that Hageman has spread false theories about the 2020 presidential election results, and said that she will not support her primary opponent in the general election. Iowa GOP party chairman Jeff Kaufmann criticized Cheney’s comments following the primary election. If Republicans are going to take back Congress, he said, they need to act as a team.
“It’s really kind of sad,” Kaufmann said. “And I would say that in Iowa, the same thing was happening. It’s really kind of sad to see a poor loser. It’s really kind of sad to see someone that’s part of a team and then forgets they’re part of that team if things don’t go their way.”
Elder also praised Trump in his address, comparing the economy under Trump versus Biden. He compared Trump’s approach to a golfer who doesn’t play with good form, but still makes impressive shots.
“When it comes to President Trump, I love where the ball landed,” Elder said. “I pay no attention to the swing.”
Mindy Ginger, a conservative Republican from Saylorville, said she has been a fan of Hageman since her appearance on shows including the War Room with Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson’s talk show on Fox News. Congress needs more people like Hageman who “means what she says,” said Ginger, who said she gave money to the campaign.
Ginger said Iowa Sen. Zach Nunn was similar to Hageman, and would help reform the federal government, cutting taxes and securing the U.S.-Mexico border. In addition to getting Republicans elected to Iowa offices, she said she wants to see Trump run for election again in 2024.
“I pray he gets back in,” Ginger said.

Speakers showed their support for Gov. Kim Reynolds, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley and Republican state government candidates, but most of the attention was focused on Nunn’s campaign against U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne. She won re-election in 2020 when Trump won the majority of the vote in the congressional district, and the redistricting process has added more rural, conservative-leaning counties to the district.
Nunn said he would work on fighting government spending in Washington, D.C. if elected and called for the reversal of the Inflation Reduction Act and Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness program. Axne and other liberal politicians do not care about the average Iowan, he said, who are still grappling with the impacts of high inflation and costs of living.
“We talked to families who have really suffered because they like us have tried to make do with not enough,” Nunn said.
During her address, Hageman said that she was looking forward to working with Nunn to stop “radical” economic and social policies.
“Zach, when you and I get to Congress, we’re going to work together on a couple of things,” Hageman said.
Elder said he related to Nunn’s race trying to unseat a Democratic incumbent, reflecting on his race against California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
While the former talk show radio host said he was in Iowa to support Nunn and other Republican candidates in the upcoming election, he also told the crowd he was considering running for another public office. While he did not say he was planning to run for president in 2024, he said he has heard from people in states from Iowa to Maine that they want the chance to support him in an election.
“I’m thinking, thinking, thinking about running for something else,” Elder said, as attendees cheered. “I will keep you posted.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Sen. Tommy Tuberville is making headlines over controversial comments made during a speech this weekend in Nevada.
Tuberville made remarks during a rally held by former President Donald Trump on Saturday, and many Democrats are calling his comments regarding their political party racially charged.
“They’re not soft on crime. They’re pro-crime. They want crime. They want crime because they want to take over what you got. They want to control what you have. They want reparations because they think the people that do the crime are owed that,” Tuberville said during remarks at the rally.
Several Democrats are responding to the controversial remarks including former Sen. Doug Jones, who responded to the remarks via a video posted on Twitter.
“This racist’s rant at a MAGA rally just can’t go uncalled out,” Jones said.
President of the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP Bernard Simelton is also responding to Tuberville’s claims. He said he wants to see an apology.
“The NAACP joins with others who have condemned the statements made by senator Tuberville as condescending and right-out racists. And we’re asking senator Tuberville for a sincere apology for making such outlandish and racists comments,” Simelton said.
CBS 42 reached out to Sen. Tuberville for a statement and we have not yet heard back.

In the last few seasons, Arizona softball has been loading up with recruits from all over the country, with the previous commit coming from Barrington, Illinois catcher last week. Head coach Caitlin Lowe and her staff remember the greats in their home state, though.
Following up on the commitment of the No. 2 catcher in the class of 2024, Lowe has received the pledge of Extra Inning Softball’s No. 6 overall player in 2024, Kate Vance. Vance is the No. 4 middle infielder according to EIS. She plays her prep ball for Hamilton High in Chandler, Ariz. and competes in travel ball for Arizona Storm.
Entering her junior year with the Hamilton Huskies, Vance has played 57 games at the varsity level. Over those games, she has hit .452, including taking a .055 leap in batting average between her freshman and sophomore seasons. In her second season, she hit .472 in 35 games.
Last season was a huge improvement across the board. Vance played in an additional 13 games compared to her freshman year. She scored 47 runs, had 60 hits, knocked in 40 RBI, hit eight doubles, legged out four triples, and blasted 16 home runs. It was enough to land her on MaxPreps’ 2022 Underclassmen All-America First Team.
In her two seasons at the high-school level, Vance has scored 76 runs, amassed 90 hits, knocked in 73 runs,

There were some frightening moments at a Jersey Shore comedy club this weekend when a heckler threw a full beer at the performer on stage.
Comic Ariel Elias was performing at Uncle Vinney’s Comedy Club in Point Pleasant Beach on Saturday and was inches away from being struck in the head by a full beer can. What she did next won her points with the crowd.
“She goes, ‘I was just a wreck and I needed a drink,’” says club owner Dino Ibelli. “It was stressful for about, I would say 10-15 seconds, and that was it.”
The incident happened during Elias’s Q&A portion of her set. An audience member asked her if she voted for former President Donald Trump.
Elias responded, “Why would you ask me that, knowing I’m the only Jew in the room? Are you trying to get me killed?”
The heckler responded that she could tell Elias voted for President Joe Biden “based on [her] jokes.”
The crowd started to get uneasy at this exchange. Elias then told the crowd “Make some noise if you want her to shut up.”
That’s when someone – believed to be the heckler’s husband – threw a beer at the stage, narrowly missing Elias. Elias responded by picking up the beer and chugging it.
The beer-thrower ran out of the club too quickly for anyone to catch him. But Ibelli says he found out who it was through the club’s surveillance system and some research.
“We’re going to prosecute to the fullest extent that we can. What it’s going to be, I don’t know the actual terms, but we’re going to go full steam ahead,” he says.
Ibelli says that in the club’s 20 years in business, nothing like this has ever happened. He says he is glad no one got hurt.
“The comedian’s the only one with the microphone. They’re the only professional in the room. And when you start heckling a comedian, everyone else is against you. So now you’re fighting against 100-plus people and yourself and you’re never going to win,” he says.
Elias was not available to be interviewed. But she received a lot of support from other comedians.
The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department says that she does not wish to pursue changes and that any information that police have made an arrest is false.

Oct. 10—WASHINGTON — In his nearly eight years representing central Washington in the House, Dan Newhouse has fended off challengers from across the political spectrum and carved out a niche as a pragmatic lawmaker more interested in policy than bluster.
But this year’s general election presents the Republican from Sunnyside with a new kind of challenge: convincing voters in the state’s reddest district to look past his vote to impeach former President Donald Trump and give him the support they largely withheld in the August primary.
Newhouse and his Democratic opponent, Yakima businessman Doug White, each received roughly 25% of votes in the primary, enough to advance from the top-two contest only because six other GOP candidates who aligned themselves with Trump split the remaining half of votes. What that pro-Trump voting bloc does in the general election will play a big role in determining the outcome.
“It’s the most conservative district in the state of Washington,” Newhouse said in an interview, “so my strategy and my message has been to appeal to those people that have supported me in the past and to remind them that I’m still the same conservative Republican that I’ve always been.”
The Cook Political Report rates Washington’s 4th Congressional District “R+11,” meaning Republican candidates are expected to perform 11 percentage points better than the national average and making it the most heavily GOP-leaning district in the state. Newhouse bested Democratic challengers in 2018 and 2020 by a roughly 2-to-1 margin while his closest races came in 2014 and 2016 against fellow Republican Clint Didier, now a Franklin County commissioner.
But White, a first-time candidate who returned home to Yakima after a 20-year career in international business, thinks right-wing voters’ lingering resentment toward Newhouse makes the incumbent vulnerable. Pitching himself as a solutions-oriented moderate, White said in an interview he hopes to assemble a coalition of reliable Democratic voters, independents and conservatives who want to see Newhouse gone.
“Obviously, it’s an uphill battle,” White said, before citing a recent internal poll his campaign commissioned that makes him optimistic. The survey’s most important finding, he said, is that 40% of Republicans in the district “would vote for a Democrat if that Democrat had the profile that I do.”
“This is a completely different game,” White said. “We’ve literally never seen this in this district before. My message is resonating well with people. They’re fed up with Dan Newhouse and we’re going to see a change.”
A spokesman for the White campaign, John Wyble, declined to share the full poll results but said it shows that Newhouse is “a divisive figure,” even among Republicans, and the race narrows to within the margin of error “after voters hear about Doug White.”
There has been no independent polling this year in the district, which national political analysts consider safely in GOP hands. But White isn’t the only one who thinks the pro-Trump electorate could throw a wrench in Newhouse’s re-election bid.
“I’ve heard a lot of people say that they’re going to vote for White because they cannot get over what Newhouse did, and I’ve heard a lot of people say they’re not going to vote at all,” said Teagan Levine, chair of the Okanogan County GOP.
Levine said when she has told those voters to “take Newhouse’s name out of it” and “look at the bigger picture,” they have usually agreed to vote for the Republican, but she is concerned that not every disaffected voter in the district will get that message before casting their ballots.
If GOP voters can’t get over Newhouse’s impeachment vote, Levine said, she worries they will jeopardize the party’s chances of taking control of the House — and in turn the odds of a Republican winning the presidency in 2024.
None of the Republicans Newhouse bested in the primary have formally endorsed the incumbent although some said they plan to vote for him.
“Newhouse is in trouble, for sure, just talking to people,” said Jerrod Sessler, a former NASCAR driver from Prosser who took 12.3% of votes in the primary, adding that he has encouraged others to vote for Newhouse. “There’s a lot of people voting for Doug White, or they’re going to abstain.”
Jacek Kobiesa, an engineer from Pasco who entered the race late and received just 490 votes, called the race “a huge mess” but said he would vote for Newhouse.
Corey Gibson, a marketing entrepreneur from Selah who won 3.4% of votes, said he has received “so many calls” from conservatives who say they are considering voting for White, “not because they align with him, but because there’s this energy out there of wanting to be heard, wanting to be able to show that people want something different.”
Gibson said he expects Newhouse to win the general election, but said he worries having such a “wildly unpopular” candidate could depress voter turnout in the district and hurt other Republicans, like Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley.
Loren Culp, a former Republic police chief who won Trump’s endorsement and 21.6% of votes in the primary, said he doesn’t plan to vote for either Newhouse or White.
“They’re both Democrats,” Culp said. “One of them just lies to us and tells us he’s a Republican.”
One issue that gives voters a clear choice between the two men is abortion access. While Newhouse touts an “A” rating from the antiabortion Susan B. Anthony List, White talks about the right to terminate a pregnancy as a matter of individual liberty.
The Democrat hopes the Supreme Court’s June ruling that overturned a federal right to abortion will drive abortion-rights supporters to turn out and support him.
With the 50% of primary voters who backed neither Newhouse nor White theoretically up for grabs, there is a potential opening for a write-in candidate to enter the race. State law prevents a losing primary candidate from running a write-in campaign for the same office, but some voters have encouraged Didier, the Franklin County commissioner who ran for the seat in 2014 and 2016, to mount a write-in campaign.
In a text message, Didier confirmed he has had “an incredible amount of people want me to run as a write in,” but said he had no plans to do so.
Mike Massey, chair of the Benton County GOP, said he estimates as many as one-third of conservatives “can’t put the clothes pin over their nose” and vote for Newhouse.
“I’m going to vote for Dan because I have learned in the past that if you don’t support your party, it can really damage things,” Massey said, recalling how he voted in the 1992 presidential race for independent Ross Perot, whose candidacy helped Democrat Bill Clinton defeat Republican George H.W. Bush.
Mike McKee, chair of the Grant County GOP, said he expects Newhouse to prevail but also worries many Republicans will not vote for him.
“I just tell them, ‘Dan may not have been your first, second, third or fourth selection, but he’s won fair and square and now it’s time to fire (House speaker Nancy) Pelosi,'” McKee said, adding with a chuckle, “I can guarantee that Dan Newhouse is not going to vote to impeach another Republican president in the next two years.”
The Washington State Republican Party didn’t endorse a candidate ahead of the August primary, but officially “nominated” him as the party’s candidate after he won the primary, party spokesman Ben Gonzalez said.
For his part, Newhouse is counting on most of the district’s Republican-leaning voters forgiving him for the impeachment vote. In an interview, he alluded to a quote attributed to conservative icon Ronald Reagan, who reportedly said, “The person who agrees with you 80% of the time is a friend and an ally, not a 20% traitor.”
In that spirit, Newhouse said, he hopes his conservative constituents who have supported him in the past will see the race against White as a clear choice between Republican and Democratic platforms.
“I think if they sit down and think about that, even though they’re angry with me for one vote, that’s still better than the other choice that they have in front of them,” he said. “So we’re doing the best that we can to communicate that message.”
When a new Congress is sworn in at the start of 2023, Newhouse may be the only remaining member of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The only other pro-impeachment Republican who survived the primaries, Rep. David Valadao of California, is in a tight race the Cook Political Report rates as a toss-up.
He will also be among a dwindling number of House Republicans who are interested in working with Democrats on bipartisan legislation as the GOP conference is increasingly dominated by hardline members who say their top priority in the next two years is investigating and even impeaching members of the Biden administration.
Newhouse, a third-generation Yakima Valley farmer, is one of the leading advocates for bipartisan immigration reform to create a reliable, legal supply of U.S. agricultural workers, about half of whom are unauthorized immigrants, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That effort has drawn the ire of anti-immigration hardliners, but Newhouse said he believes 4th District voters want solutions to problems that affect the region.
“The fact that I’m pragmatic, solutions-oriented, willing to work with people on both sides of the aisle in order to find those solutions, I don’t see that as a negative,” he said. “I think that’s what people expect of me.”

The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. on Oct. 14 at St. Cyril of Alexandria Roman Catholic Church. The burial will take place at noon at Holy Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum, located at 3555 North Oracle Road.
As a way to honor Meixner’s legacy, his family asked for people to donate to the following charities:

Wrong-way crash on I-17 near New River kills 3 GCU students
NEW RIVER, Ariz. – Three freshman Grand Canyon University students and roommates were killed by a driver headed the wrong way on I-17 early Monday morning, says the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) on Oct. 10.
Northbound lanes closed north of New River because of the four-car crash around 4 a.m.
A driver headed southbound in the northbound lanes collided with the students’ vehicle, and two other cars, which were traveling northbound. The alleged wrong-way driver was unconscious at the scene and hospitalized, DPS says, and those in the other two cars are going to be OK.
The students, however, didn’t survive.
Impairment is suspected to be a factor in this crash, DPS says.
The highway reopened at 11:30 a.m.
Victims identified
Nearly 12 hours after the crash, Grand Canyon University identified the three people killed in the crash as students of its university.
18-year-old Abriauna Hoffman, 19-year-old Hunter Balberdi, and 18-year-old Magdalyn “Maggie” Ogden, were all freshmen and dorm roommates. Two of the three were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third died at the hospital.
Balberdi was from Wailuku, Hawaii and was a pre-med student studying biology. Ogden was from Clarkston, Washington and was also on the same education and career path as Balberdi. Hoffman, also from Clarkston, Washington, was studying marketing and advertising.
“As the GCU family joins together to mourn the tragic loss of these students, we ask that you keep their families and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and know that God is always there for us,” read a portion of the university’s statement.

Sixteen-year-old Sarina Esmaeilzadeh loved to share her life with the world online. On her video blog, the charismatic teen sang, danced, cooked, did her makeup, and celebrated the end of exams. On Sept. 22, Esmaeilzadeh went to join the protests sweeping the country and was beaten to death by Iranian security forces, rights groups say.
As her case gained attention online, Iranian authorities denied any responsibility Friday, claiming she died by suicide by jumping off a roof. But the details of Esmaeilzadeh’s death in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, fit into a broader pattern of security forces targeting, arresting and, in some cases, killing minors as Iran’s anti-government uprising enters its fourth week.
Esmaeilzadeh “died after being severely beaten in the head with batons,” according to Amnesty International, which reported her death Sept. 30 as one of at least 52 people killed by security forces up to Sept. 25, an account later corroborated by other rights groups.
On her blog, Esmaeilzadeh would occasionally lament the discrimination women faced in Iran. Teenagers “need freedom” to live a good life, she said in a video posted May 22. But she couldn’t, she said, “because of some of the restrictions that are specifically put on women,” such as the mandatory hijab and being barred from sports stadiums. Iranians could expect “nothing else” from the government except welfare handouts, she said.
“It’s no longer 20 years ago when apart from ourselves we hadn’t seen any other teenager,” Esmaeilzadeh, dressed in a colorful shirt of cartoon prints, told the camera. “And it’s only natural that as a human you would look toward the better option.”
Esmaeilzadeh’s case is eerily similar to that of 16-year-old Nika Shakarami, who also died during protests last month. Her family alleges she was killed by security forces after burning a hijab, while Iranian authorities claim she fell off a roof. Shakarami’s death, and the apparent attempts to cover it up and intimidate her family, fueled further outrage.
It was the unexplained death of another young woman, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, in the custody of Iran’s morality police that first sparked the nationwide protests in mid-September. Despite a violent crackdown and internet shutdowns, the popular unrest has continued, posing the greatest challenge to Iran’s clerical leaders in several years.
“I can see that the protests have spread further after the killings increased, especially with the killing of Nika and Sarina,” Negin, a 36-year-old art teacher at a Tehran high school who has joined protests, told The Washington Post. She spoke on the condition that only her first name be used to protect her security.
Negin said one of her male relatives had initially dismissed the protests as “a bunch of spoiled kids making a mess.” But he was very saddened by Esmaeilzadeh’s death, which he compared to Iran losing a great poet.
Iranian censorship and reporting restrictions make casualty counts difficult to verify, but rights groups have identified more than two dozen children who have been killed in demonstrations. Many of the minors lived in long-marginalized areas of Iran, including Kurdistan and Baluchistan provinces, where the state’s crackdown has been most severe.
Esmaeilzadeh reportedly went to protest Sept. 22 with several friends after class. She did not return that night.
Reports of Esmaeilzadeh’s death and videos from her blog soon began to circulate online. One video of the teen singing a song by the Irish musician Hozier reached the singer on Friday, he said.
“We talk about freedoms with no understanding of what it means to pay the ultimate price in fighting for it,” Hozier tweeted. “This brave girl was only 16 years in the world…”
Under pressure, Iranian authorities said Friday that the teen died by suicide by jumping from a five-story building. State TV also aired an interview with Esmaeilzadeh’s mother, who said her daughter had once tried to kill herself using pills. She confirmed the official cause of death.
But Iran has a long history of forcing confessions and airing them on state TV, according to rights groups. Shakarami’s mother said her family was pressured to make false statements about her daughter’s death.
State TV was later briefly hacked Saturday by a group calling itself “Adalat Ali,” or Ali’s Justice. The hackers interrupted a news bulletin with slogans in support of the protests and pictures of slain demonstrators, including Esmaeilzadeh.
“The main core of this revolution is Sarina and her generation,” said Negin. “A group which is fully aware of their rights, is in touch with the world and knows really well what they are deprived of … They don’t have the fears of [my] generation.”

Hackers Knock Some U.S. Airport Websites Offline https://digitalarizonanews.com/hackers-knock-some-u-s-airport-websites-offline/
Websites for a handful of U.S. airports, including those in Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, were taken offline during a cyberattack Monday, although officials said there was no effect on flight operations.
Managers at multiple airports said they notified the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration about the cyberattacks. In a statement, the FBI said it was aware of the incident but had no additional information. The TSA declined to comment, referring inquiries to individual airports.
The attacks were carried out by a group of pro-Russian hackers known as Killnet, according to John Hultquist, vice president for intelligence at Mandiant, an American cybersecurity firm. Killnet called for coordinated denial-of-service attacks on cyber targets from a list it posted on its Telegram channel — a list that included several major U.S. airports. Denial-of-service attacks occur when a target is flooded with traffic until it can’t respond or crashes.
Though highly visible, Hultquist characterized such attacks more as a “public nuisance” than serious security threats because they don’t target major internal systems that could affect an airport’s operations. Still, when they do take place, he said, they are effective in drawing public attention.
Officials at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which is charged with understanding, managing and reducing risks to the nation’s cyber and physical infrastructure, did not respond to request for comment Monday.
The Port Authority of New York/New Jersey said LaGuardia Airport’s website experienced a denial of service incident about 3 a.m. Monday that resulted in intermittent delays for those who tried to access the site.
“The Port Authority’s cybersecurity defense system did its job by detecting the incident quickly, addressing the problem in 15 minutes, and enabling us to alert others by notifying federal authorities immediately,” the agency said in a statement, adding that there was no effect to any Port Authority facilities.
At Denver International Airport, the attack began around 11 a.m., officials said.
Los Angeles International Airport managers said in a statement the airport’s website was partially disrupted, limited to portions of the public-facing site. They said the airport’s information technology team restored all services and is investigating the cause.
“No internal airport systems were compromised and there were no operational disruptions,” the statement said.

Democratic Ohio Senate candidate Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) reiterated at a televised debate on Monday that he does not believe that President Biden should run for reelection in 2024.
“No, I’ve been very clear. I’d like to see a generational change,” Ryan said at a debate hosted by The Hill’s parent company Nexstar in Cleveland.
“Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump, the president, everybody,” he continued. “We need a new generation of leadership.”
Last month, Ryan made headlines when he suggested that Biden should not run for another term, citing generational change.
“The environment politically across the country is poisonous, and people I think want some change,” the congressman told WFMJ-TV in Youngstown, Ohio. “It’s important for us, in both parties, these leaders who have been around for a while, I think it’s time for some generational change.”
And last week, Ryan told Fox News he was not inviting Biden onto the campaign trail with him, adding that “I’m really not inviting anybody.”
A Spectrum News/Siena College poll released late last month shows Biden with a 41 percent approval rating in the Buckeye State.
Ryan’s comments come as his Republican opponent J.D. Vance works to tie him to the sitting president, mirroring a strategy seen in other contentious midterm races across the country.
The state’s Senate race appears to be narrowing, with the Real Clear Politics polling average showing Vance leading Ryan by just 1.4 points. The Cook Political Report has labeled the race as “lean Republican.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) is facing backlash for comments he made over the weekend about reparations for descendants of people who were enslaved, with National Urban League President Marc H. Morial calling his remarks “bigoted” and “stunning” and NAACP President Derrick Johnson describing them as “utterly sickening.”
During a Trump rally on Saturday in Minden, Nevada, Tuberville, a retired college football coach, claimed that Democrats are “pro-crime” because “they want to take over what you got. They want to control what you have. They want reparation because they think the people that do the crime are owed that. Bulls—t. They are not owed that.”
In a statement released Monday, Johnson called these comments “flat out racist, ignorant, and utterly sickening. His words promote a centuries-old lie about Black people that throughout history have resulted in the most dangerous policies and violent attacks on our community. Next time the senator wants to talk about crime, he should talk about Donald Trump’s hate-fueled rally on Jan. 6, 2021, and the attacks that followed. Perhaps the real criminals are in his orbit.”
Morial called on every member of the Senate to “make it clear that Tuberville’s repugnant views are unacceptable and must bear no influence on public policy. People of conscience can disagree on the best way to achieve economic justice after centuries of slavery, segregation, and discrimination. Sen. Tuberville has disqualified himself from serious discourse by smearing in the ugliest possible terms those who pursue racial justice and those to whom justice is owed.”
Tuberville’s Senate office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News. On Meet the Press Sunday, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) was asked about Tuberville’s comments, and responded that he would have been more “polite” when discussing reparations. After being pressed, Bacon said, “I’m not going to say he’s being racist. But I wouldn’t use that language.”

Former President Donald Trump made a series of faulty comparisons to other past presidents to argue that he was being held to a double standard regarding the FBI’s pursuit of his presidential documents.
Trump accused several of his presidential predecessors of storing White House documents, including ones that were classified, in unsecured warehouse spaces. But all of the examples Trump mentioned were cases of the National Archives and Records Administration — not the former presidents themselves — storing documents in secure facilities, while permanent presidential libraries were being built.
For example, Trump said, “George H.W. Bush took millions and millions of documents to a former bowling alley pieced together with what was then an old and broken Chinese restaurant, they put them together. And it had a broken front door and broken windows. Other than that it was quite secure. And there was no security.”
That drew a bewildered response from the late George H.W. Bush’s son and Trump nemesis, Jeb Bush, who tweeted a link to a clip of Trump’s rally in Arizona on Oct. 9 and commented, “I am so confused. My dad enjoyed a good Chinese meal and enjoyed the challenge of 7 10 split. What the heck is up with you?”
Documents and artifacts from the elder Bush’s time in the presidency were kept for several years in a former bowling alley in the mid-1990s, while the permanent George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum was under construction on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The delay gave archivists time to curate some 40,000 objects, such as gifts from foreign dignitaries, and 36 million pages of official records and personal papers. It was so much stuff that some of it had to be stored next door “in what used to be the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant,” according to an Associated Press story in 1994.
“Some printed material is classified and will remain so for years; it is open only to those with top-secret clearances,” the AP said.
But contrary to Trump’s claim that there was “no security” at the building, AP wrote: “Uniformed guards patrol the premises. There are closed-circuit television monitors and sophisticated electronic detectors along walls and doors.”
Dr. Robert Holzweiss, deputy director of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, told People magazine in February, “When I got involved the temporary facility for the Bush museum was in College Station, Texas, in an old bowling alley. Without the alleys it was perfect, it was like a warehouse. They just built a secure space within to house the classified material.”
Note that he says the classified materials were held in a “secure space” built by NARA.
And in any case, none of the presidential records, including classified documents, were in Bush’s possession or in his personal residence, as was the case with documents seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago in Florida. In a timeline of the FBI’s investigation of Trump’s handling of highly classified documents, we detailed the numerous steps NARA and the Department of Justice took in an effort to retrieve government records from Trump after he left office — including numerous formal requests, a grand jury subpoena and a court-approved search warrant. On Aug. 8, the Justice Department seized 13 boxes that contained numerous documents, many highly classified or top secret.
But at the rally on Oct. 9, Trump brought up several former presidents in an attempt to make the case that he was unfairly being singled out by federal authorities over presidential records.
“We have a weaponized Department of Justice and FBI and everything including, of course, the break-in of my home,” Trump said. “[W]e could call it the warehouse case because many other presidents stored their millions of pages of stuff in unsecured warehouses, some of them without front doors that worked properly. Just look at how every other president has been treated when they left office. They’ve been treated beautifully. … They’ve been given the time needed and complete deference when it came to their documents and to their papers. There was no criminality.”
Trump then talked about the handling of presidential documents by some of his predecessors to claim that he is being held to a “double standard.”
Obama’s Records
Trump falsely said that Barack Obama “moved more than 20 truckloads, over 33 million pages of documents, both classified and unclassified, to a poorly built and totally unsafe former furniture store located in a rather bad neighborhood in Chicago,” claiming, “They just found that out.”
No one “just found that out.” NARA moved and controlled records from the Obama administration after he left office.
In the days after the FBI executed a search warrant at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property on Aug. 8, Trump repeatedly raised questions about Obama’s handling of presidential records. On Sept. 23, NARA released a statement contradicting Trump’s account.
NARA statement, Sept. 23: The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) administers the Barack Obama Presidential Library, located in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The library holds records from the Obama presidential administration and is leased, controlled, managed, and used exclusively by NARA. The Obama Foundation, an independent entity, has never had control over the records in Hoffman Estates. All records in that facility are stored and managed by NARA in accordance with archival storage standards, and all classified records were stored in an appropriately secured compartment within the facility. NARA moved these records at the end of the Obama administration to the Hoffman Estates facility under the assumption that former President Obama and his Foundation would be building and transferring to NARA a traditional, physical Presidential Library in the Chicago area. When former President Obama decided that he would not build a physical, NARA-operated Presidential Library, NARA transported the classified records back to secure locations in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. The Obama Foundation provided NARA with funds to help convert the Hoffman Estates facility and to cover some of the expenses of moving the classified records, but the foundation has never had possession or control over the records.
Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter
Trump also misleadingly claimed that President George W. Bush “stored 68 million pages in a warehouse in Texas,” and that Bill Clinton “took millions of documents from the White House to a former car dealership in Arkansas.” In both cases, NARA controlled the documents at temporary facilities (a warehouse in Bush’s case and a former car dealership in Clinton’s case) before the presidential libraries were constructed.
A Jan. 15, 2009, NARA media alert said that once Bush left office a few days later on Jan. 20, “his official records and gifts received on behalf of the U.S. Government become the property of the National Archives and Records Administration,” which was transferring the material to “a temporary Library facility in Lewisville Texas approximately 20 miles from the permanent Library site on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.”
At the end of that year, a Washington Post article described the facility as a “warehouse,” reporting that “68 million pages of documents,” along with 175 million emails and many other objects and artifacts from Bush’s years in the White House had been “meticulously catalogued, wrapped, stored and guarded in the climate-controlled warehouse” managed by NARA in Lewisville. “It will all eventually move to the $300 million George W. Bush Presidential Library opening at Southern Methodist University in 2013.”
Similarly, in 2000, NARA leased a 42,000-square-foot facility, “formerly the Balch Motor Company,” a NARA press release said, in Little Rock, Arkansas, until the Clinton Presidential Library could be built.
There’s nothing unusual about NARA using converted facilities to temporarily store presidential records and artifacts while until a permanent presidential library is built.
According to NARA, “Repurposed storage facilities are a trademark of temporary library locations. The records from the Reagan administration were housed in a converted pasta factory. For the records of the George H. W. Bush administration, a bowling alley and an adjacent Chinese restaurant were combined to provide space for the records. A former car dealership housed the Clinton records in Little Rock.”
Tapes, Emails and Nuclear Codes
Trump made a few other false and misleading claims about George W. Bush, Clinton and Carter.
He said that Clinton “kept classified recordings in his sock. … They say he left the White House with recordings in his sock, and they found them in his sock drawer.” These were not “classified recordings.” Instead, they were tapes of Clinton’s conversations with author Taylor Branch, and, according to one 2007 news report, Clinton later used these oral history recordings to write his autobiography. The CBS News report said that Clinton “kept the tapes in a sock drawer.””
Branch also wrote a book, published in 2009, based on the tapes, called “The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President.”
The next year, the conservative group Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit asking a court to require NARA to take custody of the tapes, but NARA said these were “personal records” per the Presidential Records Act. In 2012, a District Court judge dismissed the suit.
Trump said that Bush “lost 22 million White House emails covering the Iraq invasion. … They’re still looking for those 22 million pages.” It’s true that the Bush administration failed to archive millions of emails, though the 22 million messages were recovered by computer specialists.
