Joe Knighten Gunnels https://digitalarkansasnews.com/joe-knighten-gunnels/ Joe Knighten Gunnels, 83, of Magnolia passed away Friday, October 7, 2022. Knighten was born on February 12, 1939 in Atlanta, Arkansas, to the late Robert Carroll “Buster” and Chlorie M. (Nesbit) Gunnels. He was a long-time member of Antioch East Baptist Church. Knighten was a talented draftsman who was known all over the Southeast for his drafting skills. In 1969, he came back to Magnolia and became a partner in his father’s business, Gunnels Mill, Inc. His father ran the sawmill, and Knighten took over the logging operation until 1990 when his son Rob joined the business. Soon after, his daughter Melissa also joined the business, and — at one point — four generations were working at the mill when his grandson, Austin, worked there while attending college. Knighten was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many duck and deer hunts at his camps in McGehee, Arkansas City, and Bradley. He especially enjoyed his last dove hunt with a host of family and friends, some of whom he had hunted with for over 50 years. He also enjoyed piloting his own plane for many years. Knighten was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary (Davison) Gunnels; wife, Mary (Aycock) Gunnels; sister, Carolyn Hudson Newcomb; son, Stephen Gee; and niece, Robin Craft. Survivors are his wife, Glenda (Phillips) Gunnels; sister, Belinda Cook of El Dorado; sons, Rob (Deidra) Gunnels of Magnolia, and Brett (Alice Ann) Gee of Bryant; daughters, Michelle (John) Jimmerson of Ruston, LA, Melissa Green of Magnolia, and Meridith (Charlie) Bateman of Texarkana. He is also survived by grandchildren, Caleb (Lexi) Bateman of Jonesboro, Zach Gee of Bryant, Austin (fiancée Emily) Gunnels of Magnolia; Lilla (fiancé Chris) Jimmerson of Bossier City, LA, Max Braswell of Magnolia, Jessie and Missy Gunnels of Magnolia, Jessika and Robbie Shelton of Bryant; as well as great-grandchildren, Cannon and Steele Bateman of Jonesboro. Knighten is survived by nieces Kathy (Lindsey) Sims of Laurel, MS, and Lisa (J.P.) Antoon of Magnolia, and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews and friends. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2022 at Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., in Magnolia. The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Antioch East Baptist Church with Bro. Ron Owen officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch East Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Willett, Buster Caver, Will Roberson, Mike McWilliams, Shane McClelland, and David Braswell. Trump Says Mike Lee abused By Romney
Trump Says Mike Lee abused By Romney
Trump Says Mike Lee ‘abused’ By Romney https://digitalarkansasnews.com/trump-says-mike-lee-abused-by-romney/ Former President Trump slammed Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Wednesday, accusing him of “abusing” his Utah colleague Sen. Mike Lee (R) following news that Romney has refrained from issuing an endorsement in Lee’s reelection campaign. “Mike Lee is an outstanding Senator who has been abused, in an unprecedented way, by a fellow Republican Senator from his own State, something which rarely has happened in political History,” Trump said in a statement issued through his Save America PAC. “Such an event would only be understandable if Mike did not perform his duties as a United States Senator, but he has, and he has performed them well,” the former president continued. Lee, who is in a tight race with independent challenger Evan McMullin, appealed to Romney on Tuesday evening during a conversation with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, asking his colleague to help him win. “Well, I’ve asked him. I’m asking him right here, again, tonight, right now. Mitt, if you’d like to protect the Republican majority, give us any chance of seizing the Republican majority, once again, getting it away from the Democrats, who are facilitating this massive spending spree in a massive inflationary binge, please get on board,” Lee said. In his appeal, Lee mentioned that the contest between himself and McMullin, a former CIA officer, was getting tighter. According to nonpartisan handicapper Cook Political Report, the race is rated “likely Republican.” However, recent polling shows that McMullin is closing the gap. For his part, Romney said he’s refrained from making an endorsement because he is friends with both Lee and McMullin, who left the Republican party in 2016 after Trump won the party’s presidential nomination, and ran against him as an independent. “I’ve worked with Mike a lot and appreciate the work we do together. But both are good friends, and I’m going to stay out,” Romney said in a statement to The Hill. Romney also caught Trump’s ire after he voted to convict the former president of one count during his first impeachment trial and has been a critic of the Trump administration in the past. Trump has called Romney a “super RINO,” or “Republican in name only.” On Wednesday, Trump said that McMullin did not represent the values of Utah, “but neither, as you will see in two years, does Mitt Romney, who refuses to endorse his fellow Republican Senator, Mike Lee.” “Mike Lee is outstanding and has my Complete and Total Endorsement. Mitt Romney and Evan McMuffin can count on the fact that they will never have my Endorsement!,” he concluded. Read More Here

Blake Masters Tells Fox News He Still Believes Trump Won In 2020
Blake Masters Tells Fox News He Still Believes Trump Won In 2020 https://digitalarkansasnews.com/blake-masters-tells-fox-news-he-still-believes-trump-won-in-2020/ Arizona GOP Senate candidate Blake Masters doubled down on his election denialism on Wednesday, telling Fox News that he still believes former President Donald Trump defeated Joe Biden in the 2020 election. With his race against incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) tightening in recent weeks, the ultra-conservative Masters has attempted to distance himself from unpopular right-wing positions and soften his stances on several divisive issues. Notably, the Trump-backed venture capitalist quietly scrubbed a section of his campaign website peddling the “Big Lie” about a “stolen” 2020 election. “The 2020 election was a rotten mess,” the site read in August. “If we had had a free and fair election, President Trump would be sitting in the Oval Office today and America would be so much better off.” During his debate with Kelly last week, however, Masters once again embraced the notion that 2020 was rigged against Trump. Rather than cite the widespread voter fraud, the Senate hopeful instead elevated claims popularized by MAGA media that Big Tech and the mainstream press conspired to tamp down negative stories about Biden to aid his victory. “I suspect that if the FBI didn’t work with Big Tech and Big Media to censor the Hunter Biden crime story,” he said when asked at the debate if the election had been “rigged” against Trump. “Yeah, I suspect that changed a lot of people’s votes.” Appearing on Fox News’ The Faulkner Focus on Wednesday, Masters was initially pressed by anchor Harris Faulkner on why he had taken down from his website the declaration that the election was stolen from Trump. “Sixty percent of the country will see somebody on a ballot somewhere who believes that 2020’s election was not fair and that… Joe Biden is not the legitimate winner of the 2020 election,” Faulkner noted. “With that as a backdrop, I know at one point your website featured this statement: ‘If we had a free and fair election President Trump would be sitting in the Oval Office today.’ That comment no longer sits on your website. Why not?” Masters immediately replied: “Well, I still believe it. That’s for sure. Like I said in my debate last week, I think if everyone followed the law President Trump would be in the Oval Office.” He went on to suggest that Twitter temporarily restricting a New York Post story on Hunter Biden and Facebook’s decision to briefly limit the report’s circulation weeks ahead of the election was largely responsible for Biden’s victory. “Millions didn’t get to read about that in the weeks before the election,” Masters proclaimed. “That one act of corporate and Big Tech censorship sent Biden into the White House.” Faulkner, meanwhile, said “that’s interesting” since it “has nothing to do with the election process,” adding that Masters was talking about “why it wasn’t fair and what Americans need to know.” At the same time, she still wanted to know why Masters decided to wipe his election denialism from his site. “One of the people in that debate with you was an independent, and I know it was an issue that he was willing to use against you. Your last thought on that and we’ll move forward,” she stated. “Like I said, I think states change the rules to flood the zone with mail-in ballots, I think that’s messed up,” he reacted, completely dodging the question. “But I think the biggest problem, Harris, in the 2020 election was Big Tech working with Big Media and apparently being pressured by the FBI to censor true information about Hunter Biden’s crimes. Call me old fashioned, but I think the American people should determine who is president, not Google or Facebook.” The Fox News anchor, for her part, piggybacked on Masters’ remarks. “Well, and more evidence to what you’re saying at the federal level: We now know that a former CIA agent, Bret Baier interviewed him last night, he was part of a letter signed saying that he thought it was misinformation about Hunter Biden. At the CIA! Just to pitch into what you are saying right there,” Faulkner declared. “Blake Masters, good luck this fall,” she added, concluding the interview. Read More Here

Judge: Trump Must Sit For Deposition In Defamation Lawsuit https://digitalarkansasnews.com/judge-trump-must-sit-for-deposition-in-defamation-lawsuit-2/ A lawyer for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump’s legal team has tried various legal tactics to delay the lawsuit and prevent him from being questioned by Carroll’s attorneys, but Kaplan wrote that it was time to move forward. “The defendant should not be permitted to run the clock out on plaintiff’s attempt to gain a remedy for what allegedly was a serious wrong,” he wrote. Carroll’s lawsuit claims that Trump damaged her reputation in 2019 when he denied raping her. Trump’s legal team has been trying to squash the suit by arguing that the Republican was just doing his job as president when he denied the allegations. That’s a key question because if Trump was acting within the scope of his duties as a federal employee, the U.S. government would become the defendant in the case. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a split decision last month that Trump was a federal employee when he commented on Carroll’s claims. But asked another court in Washington to decide whether Trump’s public statements occurred during the scope of his employment. Kaplan said Trump has repeatedly tried to delay the collection of evidence in the lawsuit. “Given his conduct so far in this case, Mr. Trump’s position regarding the burdens of discovery is inexcusable,” he wrote. “As this Court previously has observed, Mr. Trump has litigated this case since it began in 2019 with the effect and probably the purpose of delaying it.” Read More Here

Brooklyn Center Man Admits To Staging Arson With Trump Flag, “BLM” Graffiti https://digitalarkansasnews.com/brooklyn-center-man-admits-to-staging-arson-with-trump-flag-blm-graffiti/ 11:34 AM | Wednesday, October 12, 2022 A Brooklyn Center man accused of staging an arson at his home by spray-painting “Biden 2020” and “BLM” on his garage due to his Trump flag has pleaded guilty to wire fraud for filing false insurance claims. U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger announced the guilty plea by Denis Molla, 30, on Tuesday. According to court documents, Molla told police that on Sept. 23, 2020 someone had lit his camper on fire and that three unknown males were near his home when he heard an explosion. Molla had stated that his camper was targeted because it had a Trump 2020 flag displayed on it. He also reported this his garage door was vandalized with an Antifa symbol on it, as well as “Biden 2020” and “BLM” for Black Lives Matter. In reality, Molla set his own property on fire and did the vandalism himself. Denis Molla during 2020 interview with CCX News Investigators say Molla later submitted multiple insurance claims seeking coverage for fire damage to his garage, campers, vehicles and home. Molla’s insurance company denied some of those claims, which led Molla to file a written complaint with the company and threaten reporting the insurer to the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, court records showed. Court records show Molla submitted more than $300,000 in fraudulent insurance claims. He received roughly $61,000 from his insurance company, documents showed. Molla also received more than $17,000 from individual donors through GoFundMe, the investigation found. Molla pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. A sentencing hearing will be held at a later date. The case is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI and the Brooklyn Center Police Department. Brooklyn Center Read More Here

A federal appeals court asked a Washington D.C. appeals court Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, to help it decide whether the United States should be substituted for former President Donald Trump as the defendant in a defamation lawsuit brought by Carroll, who says he raped her over a quarter century ago.(AP Photo/Larry Neumeister, File) (Larry Neumeister, Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. NEW YORK – Former President Donald Trump will have to sit for a deposition next week in a defamation lawsuit filed by a writer who says he raped her in the mid-1990s, a judge ruled Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan rejected a request by Trump’s lawyers that the planned testimony be delayed. The deposition is now scheduled for Oct. 19. The decision came in a lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll, a longtime advice columnist for Elle magazine, who says Trump raped her in an upscale Manhattan department store’s dressing room. Trump has denied it. Carroll is scheduled to be deposed Friday. A lawyer for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It supports USB 3.2, and while it uses USB-C, SanDisk includes a USB Type-A adapter to make it compatible with more devices. It’s not quite as popular as other SSD models, but the 2TB configuration of the Crucial P5 Plus M.2 SSD is currently on sale for $169.99, down from its usual price of $319.99. It certainly isn’t the fastest SSD on the market, but the advertised 6600MB/s transfer speed makes the Crucial worth checking out if you need some inexpensive storage. Lucy Letby Trial: Nurse Killed Baby And Sent Parents Card Trial Told
Lucy Letby Trial: Nurse Killed Baby And Sent Parents Card Trial Told
Lucy Letby Trial: Nurse Killed Baby And Sent Parents Card, Trial Told https://digitalarkansasnews.com/lucy-letby-trial-nurse-killed-baby-and-sent-parents-card-trial-told/ Image source, SWNS Image caption, Lucy Letby, 32, of Hereford, denies 22 charges at Manchester Crown Court A nurse accused of murdering babies on a neonatal ward killed a premature baby girl on the fourth attempt before sending her parents a sympathy card, a court has heard. Lucy Letby is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder 10 others at Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016. Manchester Crown Court was told Ms Letby allegedly tried to kill the girl by injecting her with air. Ms Letby, 32, denies 22 charges. Continuing the prosecution’s opening statement for a third day, Nick Johnson KC said the circumstances of the girl’s death were “an extreme example even by the standards of this case”. “There were four separate occasions on which we allege Lucy Letby tried to kill her,” he said. The child, referred to for legal reasons as Child I, was “resilient,” he said, “but ultimately at the fourth attempt, Lucy Letby succeeded in killing her”. He said on the first occasion Ms Letby, of Hereford, had injected Child I with air. On her second attempt, he said she had stood in the doorway of the girl’s darkened room and commented she looked pale. The girl’s designated nurse then turned on the light and saw Child I was not breathing. Following a third alleged attempt to kill her, Child I was again found to have excess air in her stomach, which had affected her breathing. She was transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital where she stabilised, before being taken back to Chester, the court heard. Image caption, Lucy Letby is accused of murdering seven babies and trying to kill 10 others When Child I’s medical alarm went off following a fourth attempt, another nurse found Ms Letby next to the incubator, the jury was told. The baby died that morning. Mr Johnson said: “[Child I] was born very early and very small. “But she survived the first two months of her life and was doing well by the time Lucy Letby got her hands on her. “It was persistent, it was calculated and it was cold-blooded.” The court heard how in the immediate aftermath of Child I’s death her parents were taken to a private room and asked if the baby’s mother wanted to bathe her daughter. As the mother bathed her child, Ms Letby came into the room and, in the words of the mother, she “was smiling and kept going on about how she was present at the baby’s first bath and how much the baby had loved it”. The jury was told Ms Letby later sent a sympathy card to the child’s parents and kept an image of the card on her phone. During a police interview she agreed this was unusual but said it was not often nurses got to know a family as well as they had got to know Child I’s, the court heard. Image source, PA Media Image caption, Lucy Letby worked on the neonatal ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital The court was also told how a suspicious doctor walked in on Ms Letby as she allegedly attempted to kill another baby. Dr Ravi Jayaram, a paediatric consultant, had helped deliver Child K, who was born at 25 weeks, and later became aware Ms Letby was alone with the baby. Mr Johnson told the jury: “Feeling uncomfortable with this because he had started to notice the coincidence between the unexplained deaths, serious collapses and the presence of Lucy Letby, Dr Jayaram decided to check on where [Ms Letby] was and how Child K was. “As he walked in he saw Ms Letby standing over Child K’s incubator. “Dr Jayaram could see from the monitor on the wall that Child K’s oxygen saturation level was falling dangerously low, to somewhere in the 80s.” He said an alarm should have been sounding as Child K’s oxygen levels were falling. “We allege she was trying to kill Child K when Dr Jayaram walked in,” Mr Johnson said. Dr Jayaram found Child K’s chest was not moving and asked Ms Letby if anything had happened, to which she replied: “She’s just started deteriorating now.” Mr Johnson said Dr Jayaram found Child K’s breathing tube had been dislodged. The prosecutor said it was possible for this to happen in an active baby, but Child K was very premature and had been sedated. ‘Remarkable recovery’ The jury heard the alarm should have sounded but could be overridden for one minute. Despite his concerns at the time, Dr Jayaram did not make a note of his suspicions, the court heard. Later the same morning Ms Letby was again at Child K’s cot calling for help. She was assisting the baby with her breathing and it was found Child K’s breathing tube had this time slipped too far into her throat, the court heard. Child K was transferred to another hospital later that day but remained unwell and died two days later. Ms Letby is not accused of her murder. Image source, Julia Quenzler/BBC Image caption, Lucy Letby’s trial is continuing for a third day Earlier, Mr Johnson told the court about attempts made on the life of another premature girl, Child H, on two consecutive night shifts. He said that girl had a series of known medical problems but had suffered two inexplicable collapses. He said on the first night, Ms Letby was the girl’s designated nurse and, after she collapsed, she was transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital and underwent a “dramatic improvement”. He said Ms Letby had not been Child H’s designated nurse the following night, after she was returned to Chester. Mr Johnson said: “It is a notable fact in the case of [Child H] and others that as soon as children were removed from the Countess of Chester and the sphere of influence of Lucy Letby, it was often followed by their sudden and remarkable recovery.” He said a week after the baby’s collapses, Ms Letby searched Facebook for the girl’s parents and for the families of two other children she is accused of attacking. The court also heard about Child J, who Ms Letby is accused of trying to murder. She was a premature baby girl who was “doing well and healthy” after a bowel operation. But she suffered two serious problems with her breathing overnight in November 2015 when Ms Letby was one of the six nurses working, the jury was told. She was moved to a high-dependency room and had a seizure at 06:56 GMT. At 07:20 Ms Letby gave the baby a glucose infusion. Minutes later Child J collapsed again with a seizure and had to be resuscitated, with the help of a doctor, but he could not explain why it had happened again, the jury heard. An independent medical expert who reviewed Child J’s case said it was “of concern and consistent with some form of obstruction of her airways, such as smothering”. Again, Ms Letby, made searches on Facebook for the child’s parents. Image caption, Lucy Letby is accused of murdering seven babies and trying to kill 10 others The jury was told of twin baby brothers, Child L and M, who the nurse is charged with attempting to murder in April 2016. By this time, Ms Letby was supposed only to be working day shifts because consultants were concerned about the correlation between her presence and unexpected deaths and life-threatening episodes on the night-shifts. Mr Johnson said the defendant had volunteered to work an extra shift after she noted Child L’s low glucose levels shortly after his birth the previous day. “We say that in effect she saw the opportunity to complete what she had attempted [with Child F],” he said. The prosecution said Ms Letby attacked Child L first by adding insulin to his nutrient feed and then, while that attack was under way, administering air into Child M’s circulation. Child M suffered an unexpected life-threatening event “without warning” and came close to death and his twin’s blood sugar was left dangerously due to the insulin poisoning, the court heard. When Ms Letby’s home in Chester was searched two years later, medical notes were found detailing how many doses of adrenaline were given to Child M during his collapse and a note of his collapse was in her diary. “She denied the notes were a souvenir and she denied deliberately trying to harm [Child M],” Mr Johnson said. The nurse allegedly tried to kill another premature baby, referred to as Child N, who had a blood disorder, on three occasions. Mr Johnson said this meant Ms Letby believed, wrongly, his disorder gave her “cover” to attack him because if he bled it would be put down to the condition. He suffered a sudden life-threatening lowering of his blood oxygen levels but recovered after emergency assistance, the court heard. Independent medical experts said the baby’s sudden deterioration was consistent with some kind of “inflicted injury” or him having received an injection of air. Twelve days later, in June 2016, Ms Letby is alleged to have made two more attempts to murder Child N. Image source, Julia Quenzler/BBC Image caption, Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC said Lucy Letby would search for the parents of the poorly babies on social media The court also heard about Child O and Child P, two boys from a set of triplets. Ms Letby is charged with murdering them both on successive days. Within a few minutes of the nurse coming into the neonatal unit, Child O suffered his first collapse described as a “remarkable deterioration”, the jury was told. A breathing tube was inserted by medical staff and the baby was resuscitated but he suffered another episode later and this time doctors were not able to resuscitate him. A post-mortem examination found unclotted blood in Child O’s body from a liver injury and a coroner certified death on the basis of natural causes and intra-abdominal bleeding. Mr Johnson said: “It would not occur to [the coroner] a nurse would have assaulted a child in the neonatal unit.” He said an independent pathologist had since reviewed the case and was of the opinion the liver injury was not the result of chest compressions in resuscitation. Mr Johns...

Arkansas Has Highest Teen Birth Rate In Country Here's Why
Arkansas Has Highest Teen Birth Rate In Country, Here's Why https://digitalarkansasnews.com/arkansas-has-highest-teen-birth-rate-in-country-heres-why/ According to a report, Arkansas currently has the highest teen birth rate in the country due largely to a lack of contraceptives and proper sex education. LITTLE ROCK, Ark — Arkansas currently has the highest teen birth rate in the country, according to a report from Arkansas Advocates for Children’s & Families. The report found that limited access to contraceptives and a lack of sex education are two of the biggest reasons why the Natural State is leading the nation, despite having teens that aren’t any more sexually active than other states.  The report found that a large portion of these teen pregnancies in the state aren’t planned and that the teen birth rate in the state is almost double than that of the national average.  Advocates in the state have since pushed for “comprehensive sex education” and expanded access to better and more effective contraceptives.  According to the report, only 22% of the teens who give birth in the state said that it was intentional. The birth rate among White and Pacific Islanders teens in the state is reportedly far above the norm in comparison to other states. “Arkansas has made gains over the past two decades in lowering its teen birth rate, but other states have made progress much faster than we have,” they said. “The report suggests that Arkansas can look to those states’ successes for examples of how to address this crisis at home.” With the vast majority being unplanned pregnancies, advocates are fearful that it could infringe on the teen’s ability to finish high school, go to college, and contribute to the state’s child poverty rate. Why Republicans Can't Walk Away From Herschel Walker | CNN Politics https://digitalarkansasnews.com/why-republicans-cant-walk-away-from-herschel-walker-cnn-politics/ Megan Varner/Getty Images CNN  —  Republicans are standing by Herschel Walker. “I think we’re going to stick with Walker….we’re going take it all the way to the end,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in an interview with CNN that aired Tuesday afternoon. “I think they’re going to hang in there and scrap to the finish.” McConnell’s comments came just hours before The Washington Post reported that “the mother of one of Herschel Walker’s children had to repeatedly press the former football star who is now the Republican Senate nominee in Georgia for funds to pay for a 2009 abortion that she said he wanted her to have, according to the woman and a person she confided in at the time.” That was the latest in a series of allegations swirling around Walker and his past relationships with women. Amid all of this, his son, Christian, a conservative influencer, has spoken out against his father – insisting he was a less-than-ideal parent and that members of his family had urged him not to run for office. The contrast between McConnell’s vote of confidence in Walker and the latest allegation against the Republican Senate nominee in Georgia are striking. But, it speaks to an uncomfortable reality that undergirds Republicans’ continued support for Walker: They badly need to win this seat for the Senate majority, and it’s simply too late now to back away from him and his troubled candidacy. The Senate math is simple. Republicans need to net a single seat to win the majority. But, with Dr. Mehmet Oz trailing in Pennsylvania where Republican Sen. Pat Toomey is retiring and Arizona Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly running surprisingly strong against Blake Masters, Republicans are looking at a very narrow window of opportunity to make the gains they needs. A two-seat window, in fact. Nevada, where Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto is in a very tight race with Adam Laxalt and, you guessed it, Georgia where Walker continues to run competitively against Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock. There’s just no other seat that has come on the board for Republicans that could allow them to step away from Walker. New Hampshire was, at the start of the election cycle, widely seen as a potential pickup but popular Gov. Chris Sununu decided not to run and Trump-aligned Don Bolduc emerged as the Republican nominee. While Republican strategists still view Sen. Maggie Hassan as vulnerable, she is clearly in a better spot than many expected her to be even a year ago. In Colorado, Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet’s numbers are somewhat soft but a Marist poll released this week showed him leading Republican nominee Joe O’Dea 48% to 41%. Given all of that, what McConnell is engaging in is a bit of realpolitik. He is sticking with Walker not because he buys that all of the allegations against Walker are false or because he thinks Walker is a stellar candidate but because Walker gives him the best chance to win in a state where polling suggests Republicans can still win. That’s it. Don’t overthink it. This isn’t about Walker. Not really. This is about getting McConnell to 51 seats in the Senate – plain and simple. Read More Here

The reality couldn’t be further from the truth of course, beneath this facade I am crumbling, cascading into despair and at odds with my emotions. ‘The Perfume of Decay’ is my expression of this feeling, an argument between affectation and naturalness. It marks the beginning of a new era for us – this is Tigercub at its heaviest, its most accomplished, and most unapologetic.” “Jamie Hall is not only an incredible songwriter, singer, and fing wicked guitarist,” says Stone Gossard, “but he also has a deep understanding of art and music history. Purported Trump Supporter Who Claimed Antifa Burned Down His Camper Admits To Staged Attack, DOJ Says | CNN https://digitalarkansasnews.com/purported-trump-supporter-who-claimed-antifa-burned-down-his-camper-admits-to-staged-attack-doj-says-cnn/ CNN  —  A Minnesota man who claimed Antifa set fire to his camper during the political unrest of 2020 because he had displayed a Trump campaign flag admitted to staging the event and committing insurance fraud, the Justice Department announced Tuesday. Denis Molla, age 30, of Minneapolis suburb Brooklyn Center was indicted by a federal grand jury in July and pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud after being accused of defrauding and attempting to defraud an insurance agency and GoFundMe donors of more than $300,000 following the alleged incident, according to court records. In September 2020, Molla had “falsely reported to law enforcement that someone had lit his camper on fire and that three unknown males were near his home when he heard an explosion,” according to a DOJ news release. The Justice Department said Molla claimed his property was vandalized with graffiti referencing “Biden 2020,” Black Lives Matter, and Antifa. Molla falsely told CNN affiliate WCCO shortly after the fire that he believed someone set the blaze in response to Trump 2020 flags he had put in his yard. “These kind of stuff should not happen, especially over beliefs of some sort,” he told WCCO. “Mr. Molla was obviously remorseful during his federal plea hearing today,” Ryan Garry, Molla’s attorney, told CNN via email Tuesday. “It’s easy for the general public to look down on him, without knowing what was going on in his life, and cast immediate judgement. Mr. Molla is a wonderful husband and father who made a mistake that he sincerely regrets. Unlike many others, he has accepted full responsibility for his actions and is sorry for what happened.” Federal guidelines call for Molla to receive a sentence of up to 51 months, plus a fine and restitution, but prosecutors did not immediately make a sentencing recommendation. Judge David Doty released Molla on his own recognizance pending a sentencing hearing to be scheduled at a later date. Read More Here

Impeachment Vote Gives Dems Chance At Washington House Seat Local News 8
Impeachment Vote Gives Dems Chance At Washington House Seat – Local News 8 https://digitalarkansasnews.com/impeachment-vote-gives-dems-chance-at-washington-house-seat-local-news-8/ By RACHEL LA CORTE Associated Press VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A vote to impeach former President Donald Trump led to an outcome Washington Democrats had unsuccessfully sought for years: the ousting of long-time Republican U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler from her seat representing the southwest corner of the state. Now an open seat heading into November, the 3rd Congressional District is a key race for both parties as the House is up for grabs amid an environment of increasing polarization. Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Trump-endorsed Republican Joe Kent advanced out of the state’s crowded top two August primary that left the moderate Republican incumbent in third place. Herrera Beutler, one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, has not endorsed a candidate in the race, and has not said how she plans to vote. Where the 22% of voters who voted for Herrera Beutler in the primary fall in the general will be key for who ultimately prevails, said Mark Stephan, an associate professor of political science at Washington State University-Vancouver. “Even though Republicans continue to dominate the 3rd District, they are split in their perspectives,” he said. “This is a Republican district and it will be for a while. But there’s this small sliver of chance for the Democrats now.” The former president garnered just 38% of the statewide vote in 2020 but narrowly won southwest Washinton’s 3rd District with 50.6% of the vote. In comparison, Herrera Beutler captured more than 56% in her race that year. With an “America First” Republican candidate and a rural Democrat now the choice before voters, Stephan said “the polarization of the rest of the country can be visualized in the 3rd District.” A recent debate in Vancouver, the largest city in the district, showed the vast difference between the two candidates, with Gluesenkamp Perez saying Kent is too extreme for the district and Kent countering that she would be a rubber stamp vote for Democrats . Kent, a former Green Beret who is a regular on conservative cable and podcasts, has called for the impeachment of President Joe Biden and an investigation into the 2020 election. He’s also called to defund the FBI after the search on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home for classified documents. He railed against COVID shutdowns and vaccine mandates at the debate, calling the vaccine “experimental gene therapy” and saying Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, “must be held accountable.” “Does anyone else here feel like they just spent a month on YouTube?” Gluesenkamp Perez asked the crowd, saying that Kent’s comments are “doing nothing to heal our country.” Kent responded that the loss of his wife, a Navy cryptologist who was killed by a suicide bomber in Syria during a mission to fight the Islamic State in 2019, was “because our ruling class, Republicans and Democrats, consistently lied to the American people to keep us engaged in wars abroad.” “That is why I have a skepticism of our federal government,” he said. Gluesenkamp Perez — who co-owns an auto shop with her husband just across the border in Portland, Oregon — said that as a small business owner who lives in a rural part of the district, she is more in line with voters. She supports abortion access and policies to counter climate change, but also is a gun owner who said she opposes an assault rifle ban, though she does support raising the age of purchase for such guns to 21. “I am not your typical Democrat,” she told the crowd. “We have got to get people in Congress who fix things again, not people that are out starting flame wars.” Kent said Gluesenkamp Perez “will vote in lock step” with Democrats. “How’s your 401k doing right now, how’s your future look for your kids? Very bleak,” he said. “We cannot have two more years of the Democrats at the helm. I’m going there to be a check and a balance on Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden.” Kent has had to address connections to right-wing extremists throughout his campaign, something Gluesenkamp Perez pointed to during the debate, saying that he wanted to ban immigration “to ensure a white majority.” “This nonsense about me being a white nationalist is absolutely despicable,” Kent countered. “I fought for this country for over 20 years, I placed my life in the hands of minorities and people of every single race and creed and sexuality, and they’ve placed their lives in my hands.” Ron Moon, 79, attended the debate wearing a red “Fire Pelosi” hat with a Joe Kent button attached. Moon said he had voted for Herrera Beutler in previous elections, calling her the “lesser of two evils.” Her impeachment vote following the attack on the U.S. Capitol was the last straw: “That was the end,” he said. “I never again thought about supporting her.” Nearby, 70-year-old Nancy Everly was wearing a shirt supporting Gluesenkamp Perez and a necklace of Scrabble tiles that spelled out “Vote.” “I have to support a candidate who is pro-choice,” she said. “We can’t go backwards.” Ballots will be mailed by Oct. 21 to the state’s nearly 4.8 million registered voters, including the more than 499,000 in the 3rd Congressional District. Because Washington is a vote-by-mail state and ballots just need to be in by Election Day, it often takes days to learn final results in close races as ballots arrive at county election offices throughout the week. New York Times Latest Spin: Grandpa Biden Is Simply A Folksy Storyteller. Trump Is A Pure Liar. | The Daily Wire https://digitalarkansasnews.com/new-york-times-latest-spin-grandpa-biden-is-simply-a-folksy-storyteller-trump-is-a-pure-liar-the-daily-wire/ Man, being a Democratic politician like President Joe Biden is so easy. You can lie through your teeth for 50 years straight, and the worst criticism from the lapdog media you will receive is a New York Times article waving all that dishonesty away as “storytelling” and “folklore.” To save ink, let’s shorten “Biden’s storytelling” to “BS.” On Monday, The Times wrote a lofty story about such BS titled, “Biden, Storyteller in Chief, Spins Yarns That Often Unravel.” The article, which took two journalists to write, has the subheader: “President Biden has been unable to break himself of the habit of embellishing narratives to weave a political identity.” The Times went on to list a number of lies — though the paper didn’t call them that — that have already been covered extensively by conservative news outlets — including The Daily Wire. The BS includes lying about traveling to Afghanistan to pin a silver star on a war hero, his house almost burning down from a fire, and being a politically Black-Puerto-Rican-Jewish American. All of it is old news, but the president repeats his lies often enough that even legacy media has to report on it. If anytime readers of The Gray Lady are struggling to understand when Biden is lying, here’s a helpful tip. First, anytime Biden claims that somebody called him “Joey,” it suggests that he is telling an exaggerated story at best and an outright lie at worst. The president’s favored phrase — “not a joke” — is another tell that something is amiss. The Times, being the hacks they are, had to claim that former President Donald Trump is worse than Biden. “Mr. Biden’s instances of exaggeration and falsehood fall far well short of those of his predecessor,” the paper said in an effort to appease its clientele. “Former President Donald J. Trump lied constantly, not only about trivial details (like insisting it hadn’t rained during his inauguration when it clearly had) but also about consequential moments — misleading about the pandemic, perpetrating the ‘big lie’ that Mr. Biden stole the 2020 election, and claiming falsely that the Capitol was not attacked by his supporters on Jan. 6, 2021,” the article said. Did you get that? Trump is a liar, whereas Biden is simply a folksy storyteller who uses exaggeration and falsehood to craft his own political narrative. To prove its point, The Times even spoke to an expert on presidential lying. Eric Alterman is the author of “Lying in State: Why Presidents Lie — and Why Trump Is Worse” and, perhaps not surprisingly, a professor in the City University of New York system. “He obviously has this tendency, where he’s a good and decent man who in politics has felt like he could stretch the truth up to a point just like virtually every president has done,” Alterman said seriously. “With Biden, people have decided these are not the kind of lies that matter,” Alterman added. “These are the kinds of lies that people’s grandfathers tell.” The Times also noted conservative criticism of the president while speaking to another college professor for comment. “It’s an attempt to create a sort of picture of who he is as someone who has empathy and knowledge and connection with people who are unlike him,” Michael Blake, a professor of philosophy, public policy and governance at the University of Washington, told the paper.  “But the problem is, when it’s verifiably a false story, at that point trust in that story, it fails.” Of course, Biden’s first campaign ended due to plagiarism and lying about his law school record. From there, the BS has only gotten worse. In other words, Biden’s entire political narrative has been a lie. That’s obvious as he presented himself as a moderate unifier and has now spent the first two years of his office demonizing Trump supporters, and his administration has effectively sicced the Department of Justice on his political opponents. Anyway, disregard all that. According to the “experts” and reporters at The New York Times, Grandpa Joe is just an All-American classic no different from your grandfather. What BS. Casino Tycoon Wynn Defeats U.S. Lawsuit Over Chinese Agent Claims https://digitalarkansasnews.com/casino-tycoon-wynn-defeats-u-s-lawsuit-over-chinese-agent-claims/ By Jacqueline Thomsen (Reuters) – Casino magnate Steve Wynn cannot be ordered to register with the U.S. Department of Justice as a foreign agent of China, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., said Wednesday. The Justice Department in May sued for a court order forcing Wynn, the former CEO of Wynn Casinos, to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Officials alleged that Wynn lobbied then-U.S. President Donald Trump on China’s behalf in 2017. Wynn’s attorneys denied that he was ever an agent of the Chinese government. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg said Wednesday that, because any relationship between Wynn and the Chinese government ended in 2017, the GOP donor cannot be required to register as an agent. The judge pointed to past precedent in D.C. federal court in making the ruling. The judge said he was not determining whether Wynn had lobbied on China’s behalf. He also said the Justice Department could pursue criminal sanctions against Wynn for failing to disclose the alleged lobbying, if the statute of limitations had not expired. Wynn’s lawyers and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Republican And Democratic Jewish Groups Launch Campaigns In Close Nevada Senate Race https://digitalarkansasnews.com/republican-and-democratic-jewish-groups-launch-campaigns-in-close-nevada-senate-race/ Nevada Republican U.S. Senate candidate Adam Laxalt joins former U.S. President Donald Trump on stage during a campaign rally at Minden-Tahoe Airport in Minden, Nevada, Oct. 08, 2022. (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) By Ron Kampeas October 12, 2022 (JTA) — Democratic and Republican Jewish groups are campaigning in the Nevada U.S. Senate race, where the state’s substantial Jewish community could help make the difference in a close contest. Adam Laxalt, the state’s former attorney general, is seeking to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto. The Republican Jewish Coalition’s political action committee has hired a field staffer in Nevada and is running a phone bank and door-knocking operation to benefit Adam Laxalt, according to RJC director Matt Brooks. The RJC staged a rally for Laxalt in Las Vegas on Sept. 28, which was attended by Miri Adelson, the widow of Jewish casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, and one of the GOP’s leading donors. Meanwhile, the Jewish Democratic Council of America’s affiliated PAC on Wednesday launched a 30-second video ad tying Laxalt, the former state attorney general, to former President Donald Trump, antisemitism, extremist violence, stringent anti-abortion measures, and guns. “This is where Adam Laxalt will take America,” says the ad, which will reach Jewish voters and Independents on digital platforms. It includes an image of a memorial to the 11 Jewish worshippers massacred in their Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018. Laxalt has embraced some of Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election. His communications director, Courtney Holland, was among those marching on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, a protest spurred by Trump’s lies that culminated in deadly violence. Laxalt opposes abortion in most cases while saying state legislatures should determine abortion laws. He backs the removal of restrictions on gun ownership. The ad’s reference to Laxalt’s purported support for the antisemitic and racist “great replacement theory” is based on a Democratic-aligned news site’s analysis of Laxalt’s immigration policy. Voter research shows Laxalt and Cortez Masto essentially tied. Nevada’s Jewish community numbers close to 80,000 people, a constituency that could make the difference in a close election. To Hold House Democrats Eye GOP-Held Districts Won By Biden
To Hold House, Democrats Eye GOP-Held Districts Won By Biden https://digitalarkansasnews.com/to-hold-house-democrats-eye-gop-held-districts-won-by-biden-2/ GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — While preparing to march in a Saturday morning parade through this fast-growing city’s westside, Democratic congressional candidate Hillary Scholten warned her staff that the area was traditionally very conservative and they should brace for possible booing. But the crowd lining Fulton Street to mark the region’s Polish pride was friendly. Only one man bellowed what sounded to the candidate like “Go to hell, Hillary!” as she passed. But he also grinned and flashed a thumbs-up later. He’d actually cried, “Give ’em hell, Hillary!” It’s been 32 years since a Democrat won the House seat where Scholten is competing against Republican John Gibbs. But, its largest city, Grand Rapids, has turned steadily bluer lately, and redrawn congressional maps have converted it from a district that backed Donald Trump for president in 2020 to one that Joe Biden would have carried instead. It’s one of 14 U.S. House seats nationwide that are held by Republicans but that Biden would have won under new maps. As Democrats brace for midterm defeats that could erase their narrow, five-seat control of the House, a chance to limit the damage may lie in flipping Republican-held seats that voted for Biden to stanch the effect of losses elsewhere around the country. Scholten, a former Justice Department attorney and Christian Reform Church deacon, lost the seat to Republican Rep. Peter Meijer in 2020. But Meijer was defeated in his Michigan GOP primary this year by Trump-backed challenger Gibbs, a former software engineer who falsely purports that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Scholten is trying to become the first Democratic woman elected to the House from western Michigan and isn’t counting on more favorable boundaries to get her there, noting that it’s “hard for people to believe in what they’ve never seen before, and we feel that every day.” But even Gibbs concedes the new maps have Democrats excited. “In a year where they’re expected to have a very difficult time in the midterms,” he said, “for them, a pickup is something that they’re salivating over.” The list of GOP-held Biden districts feature three Los Angeles-area seats and one in California’s Central Valley. Others are the territories of Republican Reps. Don Bacon in Omaha, Nebraska, and Steve Chabot in Cincinnati. Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, who represents the moderate swing battleground of Bucks County, north of Philadelphia, faces a similar test. On the other side are a dozen districts that voted for Trump but are held by Democrats. Retirements and redistricting mean many no longer have incumbents running. Still, Democrats see high stakes in their efforts to flip seats won by Biden. When House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer recently predicted that his party would hold the chamber, he mentioned such territory in California and Illinois, as well as Bacon’s and Chabot’s districts, and the Grand Rapids race. Not every incumbent is sweating toss-up races. Chabot says that, during his 26 years running for reelection in southwestern Ohio, he’s “had more challenging races, for sure, than anyone in the House.” But, as he competes for potential crossover voters, Chabot is not emphasizing Trump. “I agree with most of his policies, but I’m running on my own record,” Chabot said. “People can make up their own minds.” Gibbs says that, despite Trump’s endorsement, he’s building appeal among independents and swing voters. He recalled one man approaching him in the lakefront city of Muskegon, northwest of Grand Rapids, and saying: “I voted for you. I’m a Democrat. Is that OK?” “This race is not so much about Democrat vs. Republican. It’s more crazy vs. normal,” said Gibbs, pointing to high gas and food prices and ”what they’re trying to do to kids in school,” with modern curriculums and inappropriate material in campus libraries being especially outlandish. But, echoing Trump, Gibbs left open the possibility that he may object to the results of his own election next month. “If it’s fair and everything’s on the up and up, I’ll accept whatever the result is,” he said. But asked if he could define fair, Gibbs replied, “Not at this point.” “We’ll just have to kind of see how it goes,” he said. A Scholten win would cement this area’s political transformation from red to blue. Booms in health, university and technology jobs are attracting scores of college-educated workers — with new residents often importing Democratic voting preferences. Grand Rapids and its suburbs have also turned more diverse, including notable increases in Hispanic voters. Such a change was long unthinkable in the home city of Gerald Ford and former Trump administration Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, which once epitomized pro-business, country club conservativism. “I love to play golf. We play at public courses,” Scholten said, laughing. “I think that’s a pretty good analogy, actually.” Despite Democrat-friendly lines, national Republicans see the district as a “checks and balances” area where voters might have shunned Trump but want to control Washington’s spending and potential federal overreach. Meijer was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, prompting the former president to endorse Gibbs. The Democratic House campaign committee even financed a GOP primary ad proclaiming that Gibbs was “hand-picked by Trump to run for Congress,” believing he’d be beatable in November. Trump once nominated Gibbs to head the Office of Personnel Management, but he wasn’t confirmed amid questions about past tweets, including one from 2016 in which Gibbs wrote, “Today’s Dem party: Islam, gender-bending, anti-police, ‘u racist!’” Gibbs says Democrats have posted far more incendiary things. “I don’t apologize. I never have and will not,” he said. Democrats hope that a question on Michigan’s ballot asking voters to put the right to an abortion in the state constitution energizes their base. “The issue of choice is front and center in a way that it wasn’t before,” Scholten said. “It’s changed a lot of minds.” Gibbs counters that his steadfast opposition to abortion is a winner. He’d only allow exceptions if a pregnant woman’s life is endangered. In instances of rape or incest, Gibbs said: “That baby, born in that case, is innocent. So I don’t see why an innocent person should have to perish.” Raised in the Pentecostal church, Gibbs spent seven years as a missionary in Japan. But he converted to Catholicism in 2021 and now tries to go to Mass multiple times per week. He has that in common with Biden, who is also a devout Catholic, though Gibbs isn’t seeking bipartisanship there. He retorted of the president’s frequent Mass attendance, “Yeah, I just wish he would accept the teachings.” “If I ever saw him at Mass, I’d have a nice, frank conversation,” Gibbs said. “Give him a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: ‘You oughta learn this.’” ___ By WILL WEISSERT Read More Here

What Is Vladimir Putin Thinking And Planning?
What Is Vladimir Putin Thinking And Planning?
What Is Vladimir Putin Thinking And Planning? https://digitalarkansasnews.com/what-is-vladimir-putin-thinking-and-planning/ Image source, EPA Image caption, President Putin seems to be determined to push ahead despite a series of recent military defeats in Ukraine By Steve Rosenberg Russia Editor, Moscow It’s the question we’ve been asking for months now, even before Russia invaded Ukraine. What is Vladimir Putin thinking and planning? Let me get the disclaimer in early. I have no Kremlin crystal ball. Neither do I have Putin on direct dial. Former US President George W Bush once said he’d looked Vladimir Putin in the eye and “got a sense of his soul”. Look how well that ended for relations between Russia and the West. So, getting inside the mind of the Kremlin leader is a pretty thankless task. But it’s important to try. Perhaps more than ever now, in light of recent nuclear sabre-rattling by Moscow. There’s little doubt that the Russian president is under pressure. His so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine has gone badly wrong for him. It was supposed to last a few days. But we’re nearly eight months in and there’s no end in sight. The Kremlin admits “significant” troop losses; in recent weeks the Russian military has been losing territory in Ukraine which it had previously occupied. To boost troop numbers, last month President Putin declared partial mobilisation, something he’d insisted he wouldn’t do. Meanwhile, sanctions continue to degrade the Russian economy. So, back to Putin’s state of mind. Will he be thinking he got it all wrong, that his decision to invade was a fundamental error? “Putin’s perceptions drive the entire situation in this conflict,” believes Konstantin Remchukov, owner and editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta. “He is the authoritarian leader of a nuclear power. He’s the unchallenged leader in this country. He has some strong beliefs and perceptions which drive him crazy. He’s started to believe that this is existential from the point of view of importance. Not only for him. But for the future of Russia.” If this conflict is existential, how far is President Putin prepared to go to win it? In recent months senior Russian officials (including Putin himself) have been dropping unsubtle hints that the Kremlin leader would be prepared to use nuclear weapons in this conflict. “I don’t think he will,” US President Joe Biden told CNN. “But I think that it’s irresponsible for him to talk about it.” Image source, EPA Image caption, Russian troops were forced to make a humiliating retreat from nearly all of Ukraine’s north-eastern Kharkiv region in September This week’s intense Russian bombardment of Ukraine suggests the Kremlin is, at the very least, determined to escalate things with Kyiv. “He’s trying to avoid direct confrontation with the West, but at the same time he’s prepared for it,” believes veteran liberal politician Grigory Yavlinsky. “I fear most the possibility of nuclear conflict. And, on the second place, I fear endless war”. But “endless war” requires endless resources. That’s something Russia doesn’t seem to have. The wave of missile strikes on Ukrainian cities is a dramatic demonstration of force, but how long can Moscow sustain that? “Could you continue this missile flow for days, weeks, months? Many experts doubt that we have enough missiles,” says Mr Remchukov. “Also, from the military point of view, no-one has ever said what would be the sign of ultimate [Russian] victory? What is the symbol of victory? In 1945 it was the banner over Berlin. What is the criteria of success now? [A banner] over Kyiv? Over Kherson? Over Kharkiv? I don’t know. Nobody knows.” It’s not even clear that Vladimir Putin knows. Back in February, the Kremlin’s objective appears to have been the rapid defeat of Ukraine, forcing Russia’s neighbour back into Moscow’s orbit without a prolonged war. He miscalculated. He underestimated the determination of the Ukrainian army and people to defend their land, and seemingly overestimated the capabilities of his own military. What’s he thinking now? Is Vladimir Putin’s current plan to cement control over Ukrainian territory he claims to have annexed and then freeze the conflict? Or is he determined to push on until the whole of Ukraine is back in the Kremlin’s sphere of influence? This week former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev wrote: “The Ukrainian state in its current configuration… will be a constant, direct and clear threat to Russia. I believe the aim of our future actions should be the complete dismantling of Ukraine’s political regime.” If Mr Medvedev’s words reflect President Putin’s thinking, expect a protracted and bloody conflict. Image source, Reuters Image caption, Russia’s military says it wants to mobilise 300,000 reservists – but there appears to be a growing opposition to the move across the country But, inevitably, Mr Putin’s actions abroad are having consequences at home. Over years the Kremlin painstakingly cultivated Putin’s image of “Mr Stability”, encouraging the Russian public to believe that as long as he was in charge they would be safe. “The previous contract between Putin and society was that ‘I protect you’,” says Mr Remchukov. “For many years the main slogan was ‘predictability’. What kind of predictability is there today? The concept is over. Nothing is predictable. My journalists don’t know whether they will receive call-up papers when they get home today.” Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine surprised many. But not Mr Yavlinsky. “I think that [Putin] had been moving in that direction – year by year he was constructing the way to what we have now,” Mr Yavlinsky says. “For example, destroying independent media. He started that in 2001. Destroying independent business. He started that in 2003. Then 2014 and what happened with Crimea and Donbas. You’d have to be blind not to see it. “Russia’s problem is our system. A system was created here that created such a person [as Putin]. The question of the West’s role in creating this system is a very serious one. “The problem is that this system didn’t create a society. There are a lot of very nice people in Russia. But there is no civil society. That’s why Russia can’t resist.” Read More Here

3 SWAT Officers Shot, Injured In Philadelphia; Police Call Level Of Gun Violence 'ridiculous' https://digitalarkansasnews.com/3-swat-officers-shot-injured-in-philadelphia-police-call-level-of-gun-violence-ridiculous/ Three members of a Philadelphia SWAT team were shot while serving a warrant Wednesday morning, according to police, who again pleaded for an end to the city’s gun violence. It appears all the injured officers will be OK, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said. This shooting occurred just after 6 a.m. as SWAT officers tried to serve a warrant on a person who was wanted for an August homicide and was suspected of participating in multiple armed robberies, Philadelphia Police First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said at a news conference. Investigators work the scene where multiple people were shot including police officers in Philadelphia, Oct. 12, 2022. Matt Rourke/AP As officers approached the door, the 19-year-old suspect shot at them through the door and window, Stanford said. The suspect tried to flee, and when the SWAT officers followed, the suspect fired at them, according to Stanford. SWAT officers returned fire and the suspect was pronounced dead at 7:32 a.m., he said. Investigators work the scene where multiple people were shot including police officers when a SWAT team attempted to serve a homicide warrant in Philadelphia, Oct. 12, 2022. Matt Rourke/AP Two of the injured officers are expected to be released from the hospital later on Wednesday, Stanford said. One officer was struck in the leg, one in the hip and the third was hit in the upper chest, Stanford said. “It’s good to see them sitting up, talking, and their families around them,” Kenney told reporters. Stanford called the level of gun violence in Philadelphia “ridiculous,” adding, “it’s enough.” “There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t either have a child that is shot, or multiple people shot, because there are too many people out here carrying guns and they don’t have consequences,” he said. “Some people need to be in jail.” “This should not be happening — this is not normal,” he said. “Unfortunately we have come to believe that this is the normal course of events — it’s not … it is troubling.” A street in North Philadelphia, where three SWAT team members were shot while serving a warrant on Oct. 12, 2022. WPVI Stanford stressed that Wednesday’s suspected gunman was just 19 years old. “Something has been broken in this young man’s life for a long time, and it just didn’t start today,” he said. (AP Photo/Mary Schwalm, File) by: Caroline Vakil Posted: Oct 12, 2022 / 07:50 AM MDT Updated: Oct 12, 2022 / 07:50 AM MDT Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii), who recently announced she would be leaving the Democratic Party, will be campaigning with a Trump-aligned GOP Senate candidate in New Hampshire ahead of midterms.  The campaign for retired Army Gen. Don Bolduc, who won the GOP primary to take on Sen. Maggie Hassan (D) in November, announced on Wednesday that Gabbard would be stumping for him.  “We don’t agree on every issue, but I am honored to have the support of Tulsi Gabbard who shares my view that the status quo is broken, and we need a change of direction,” Bolduc said in a statement.  “Tulsi is a fellow change agent and independent-minded outsider willing to speak truth to power. I am going to spend every day between now and election day building a wide coalition of supporters that includes Republicans, independents and even disaffected Democrats who know that Senator Hassan is a career politician and must be retired.” Recent polling has shown Bolduc trailing Hassan by as much as double digits, though the nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates Hassan’s seat as only “lean Democrat.” Many Republicans had hoped to see state Senate President Chuck Morse (R) prevail in the September GOP primary; Morse was seen as the establishment favorite whom members of the party believed could give them a better chance of flipping the seat. But not all politicos see the Senate race as a wash, including Gabbard, who made news on Tuesday after she said that she would leaving the party and invited others to join her.  “If you can no longer stomach the direction that the so-called woke Democratic Party ideologues are taking our country, then I invite you to join me,” she said in a video message posted to Twitter. Sen. Lindsey Graham Presses Court To Overturn Georgia Subpoena In Vote Fraud Probe https://digitalarkansasnews.com/sen-lindsey-graham-presses-court-to-overturn-georgia-subpoena-in-vote-fraud-probe/ Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is asking a federal appeals court to overturn a lower court’s decision that forces him to testify before the Fulton County grand jury investigating actions by former President Donald Trump and his allies in the aftermath of his 2020 election loss in Georgia. Mr. Graham, a Republican, wants the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit to let his attorneys present oral arguments on why his phone calls with Georgia officials amounted to legitimate legislative activity and should be protected from legal scrutiny. “This appeal presents important questions of constitutional immunity concerning whether (and, if so, to what extent) a local district attorney can compel a sitting United States senator to testify before a state special-purpose grand jury,” Mr. Graham’s attorneys wrote in court papers on Tuesday. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis wants to hear from Mr. Graham because Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger reportedly came away from one call believing the senator wanted him to discard some ballots. Mr. Graham says he never asked officials to throw away ballots and said his scrutiny of procedures was necessary because he chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time and had to certify electoral votes as a member of Congress. An Atlanta-based judge earlier this year ruled Mr. Graham must testify in Fulton County, saying there were “considerable areas of inquiry” that were not related to the senator’s legislative duties. Mr. Graham’s attorneys say that is a backdoor excuse to find ways to ask about legislative activity that is protected by the Constitution’s “speech or debate clause,” alongside concepts known as “sovereign immunity” and the “high-ranking-official doctrine.” “All three roads independently lead” to tossing out the judge’s order, Mr. Graham’s attorneys wrote. While other key figures tied to Mr. Trump, including former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, have testified before the grand jury on post-election activities, Mr. Graham says he plans to fight the subpoena all the way to the Supreme Court. Fetterman Walker Face Political Challenges Outside Of The Overall Environment
Fetterman Walker Face Political Challenges Outside Of The Overall Environment
Fetterman, Walker Face Political Challenges Outside Of The Overall Environment https://digitalarkansasnews.com/fetterman-walker-face-political-challenges-outside-of-the-overall-environment/ WASHINGTON — If it’s Wednesday … NBC’s Dasha Burns interviews  Democrat John Fetterman on his health after his stroke: “I feel like I’m gonna get better and better — every day.” … Herschel Walker’s abortion accuser shows the Washington Post a $700 check that contains Walker’s name, signature and address at time. … President Biden warns of “consequences” for Saudi Arabia over OPEC’s cut in oil production. … And Biden calls for resignation of an L.A. City Council members after audio of racist comments. But first: Two interviews, two candidates and two unique situations — where the story at play is far removed from the traditional dynamics of a midterm campaign.  NBC News’ Dasha Burns interviewed Democrat John Fetterman in PA-SEN about his health in the candidate’s first sit-down TV interview since his stroke, and they discussed the transcription service he uses to process questions.  “It’s really just how things happen with me, because I sometimes will hear things in a way that’s not perfectly clear. So I use captioning, so I’m able to see what you’re saying in captioning,” Fetterman said.   On why his campaign has denied requests for his medical records: “As I said, being in front of thousands and thousands of people and having interviews and getting around all across Pennsylvania, that gives everybody– and the voters decide if they think that’s really the issue.”  In a separate interview, ABC News spoke with Republican Herschel Walker in the Georgia Senate race after being accused of urging an ex-girlfriend to get an abortion and reimbursing her for it.  “I know nothing about an abortion. I know it’s a lie … Yes, she’s lying,” he said.   That interview, however, was taped before the Washington Post reviewed a $700 check to Walker’s abortion accuser that contained Walker’s name, his signature and his address at the time, as well as a $575 receipt from a women’s medical center.  What stands out about both Fetterman and Walker is that their candidacies — right now — have little connection with the national political environment, even as they’re running in two of the most important Senate contests of 2022.   Instead, their challenges have become something else — health and an abortion accusation.  Tweet of the day Data Download: The number of the day is … $725 million That’s how much has already been spent on general election ads in governors races in 2022, per AdImpact (including what’s been booked). Democrats have a significant advantage — their candidates are outspending Republican candidates by a more than 2:1 margin ($210 million to $97 million), and Democratic outside groups have spent 39% more than Republican outside groups.  The top five races as far as spending so far are Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada and Florida, in that order.  Other numbers to know: More than 1 million: How many electronic communications from agents the Secret Service has turned over to congressional investigators from around Jan. 6, 2021, NBC News’ Julia Ainsley reports exclusively. The messages include emails but not text messages.  96: The age of the legendary actress Angela Lansbury when she passed away Tuesday.  14: How many GOP-held House seats Biden won in 2020, which Democrats are targeting to hold onto their majority, per the Associated Press.  67: The number of Republicans on the ballot in House races who are Black, Latino, Asian or Native American, per the New York Times.  $6 million: How much Republican Tiffany Smiley raised in the latest fundraising quarter in her Senate race in Washington, per Axios.  Midterm roundup: Standing by election deniers Arizona is ground zero for election denialism, with GOP candidates for governor, Senate, secretary of state and attorney general all denying the results of the 2020 election. But that hasn’t stopped Republican leaders from campaigning with them.  On Wednesday, GOP Gov. Doug Ducey and former Vice President Mike Pence, who both defied pressure from former President Donald Trump to overturn the election results, respectively backed gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake and Senate nominee Blake Masters, both of whom have said the 2020 election was stolen. In an interview with NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard, Ducey defended the Republican Governors Association’s decision to back Lake, arguing that border security, school choice and taxes are also important issues. And Pence said at event with Masters that he is a “proven conservative.”  The events in Arizona underscore a broader dynamic within the GOP as Republican leaders back scores of candidates who echo Trump’s lies about the 2020 election. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell summed it up this way in an interview with CNN: “I don’t have a litmus test. I’m for people that get the Republican nomination, and for winning, because if we win, we get to decide what the agenda is, and they don’t.” Elsewhere on the campaign trail: Colorado Senate/Governor: Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet leads Republican Joe O’Dea in a new Marist poll of registered voters 48%-41%. The poll also found Democratic Gov. Jared Polis leading his Republican rival, Heidi Ganahl, 54%-36%.  Pennsylvania Senate: Democratic nominee John Fetterman  released a new ad in partnership with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee featuring a Republican planning to vote for him over the Republican nominee, Mehmet Oz. The ad is part of a new “Republicans for Fetterman” initiative, his campaign says. Wisconsin Senate: Democrat Mandela Barnes is leaning into the issue of abortion as polls show a close race, Politico reports. Michigan Governor: Vice President Kamala Harris will attend a fundraiser for Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the Detroit area this weekend. The RGA’s Michigan political committee is going up with its first direct ad buy of the general election in this race, for about $430,000 per AdImpact.  Nevada Governor: Everytown For Gun Safety Action Fund is booking its first ad buy in this race, costing $1.8 million, per AdImpact.  Oregon Governor: Virginia Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin is campaigning next week with Oregon GOP gubernatorial nominee Christine Drazan. Texas Governor: The Texas Tribune reports that Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and Democratic nominee Beto O’Rourke each raised about $25 million from July through Sept. 29. And a new Marist poll of registered voters found 49% backing Abbott and 45% backing O’Rourke.   Texas Attorney General: NBC News’ Suzanne Gamboa explores  whether the issue of abortion can help Democrat Rochelle Garza in her race against GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton. Connecticut-05: The Congressional Leadership Fund booked $1.1 million in ads here, per AdImpact.  Oregon-06: The Cook Political Report moved its rating of the newly drawn Oregon 6th District to a “Toss Up.” Rhode Island-02: Republican Allan Fung leads Democrat Serth Magaziner by 8 points in a new Boston Globe/Suffolk poll, 45%-37% among likely voters. AdImpact data shows the GOP-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund just booked another $1.1 million in ad spending there. Fung is one of a handful of Republicans threatening to break Democrats’ hold on New England House districts, per the Washington post.  Ad watch: Using Gibbs’ own words against him After boosting his right-wing primary opponent to help oust Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Mich., Democrats are now turning to attacking that opponent — Republican John Gibbs — in an effort to flip Michigan’s 3rd District in November. In a new ad out by House Majority PAC, a group aligned with House Democratic leadership, young girls read statements attributed to Gibbs. Those statements include things like, “Are men smarter than women? I think the answer is yes” and “The United States has suffered as a result of women’s suffrage.” Despite this ad, a Republican group has still been the top spender since the August primary, according to AdImpact. The conservative Congressional Leadership Fund has spent $1.6 million already and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has spent $1.3 million. HMP, which funded this ad, has spent just $80,000 but has an additional $890,000 worth of airtime booked through Election Day. Gibbs will face Democratic nominee Hillary Scholten in November. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race “Lean Democrat.” ICYMI: What else is happening in the world A new book focusing on the Trump administration details a tense call between former President Trump and Republican leaders ahead of his first impeachment. Capitol Police are investigating a letter found near Rep. Bennie Thompson’s, D-Miss., office that they say has “concerning language.” Thompson chairs the House committee investigating January 6. The Justice Department is asking the Supreme Court to block the special master that is reviewing documents seized at Mar-a-Lago from accessing classified documents. Read More Here
