Nightshades (Solanaceae family) are planets containing alkaloids, with common edible types including potatoes (not sweet potatoes), tomatoes, all peppers (bell, chili, jalapeno), eggplant, and tomatillos. Key spices include paprika, cayenne, and chili powder. They are found in many sauces, spice blends, and foods.
Common Nightshade Foods & Fruits Potatoes: White, red, Yukon gold, russet (Note: sweet potatoes/yams are NOT nightshades). Tomatoes: All varieties, including canned, ketchup, sauces, and soups. Peppers: Bell peppers (all colors), jalapenos, habaneros, chili peppers, pimentos, serrano, banana peppers. Eggplant: Also known as aubergine. Tomatillos: Often used in green salsa. Berries/Fruits: Goji berries, ground cherries, Cape gooseberries, garden huckleberries (not regular huckleberries), tamarillos, pepino melons. Other: Okra, tobacco, ashwagandha (an herb).
