Terms Used:
Startup: The period of time that occurs after pressing your attack button, but before your attack is capable of making contact with the opponent. It's one of the three stages of an attack, along with active and recovery, and is measured in frames.
Recovery: The period of time that occurs after your attack has finished hitting, but before you gain back control of your character for more actions.
Hurtbox: A predefined area (usually a group of rectangles or circles) that tell the game how your character is allowed to get hit by any incoming attack. Specifically, you'll get hit by (or block) an attack if that attack's hitbox ever overlaps your hurtbox.
