Has Wes Anderson gone too Wes with Asteroid City?
Has Wes Anderson gone too Wes with Asteroid City?
All this is delightful but curiously depthless, and you may exit the cinema feeling as if you’ve been trying to survive on a diet of macaroons. If there’s a theme or resonant emotion poking through the tissue-paper, it is the age-old Anderson chestnut of the struggle between brainiac kids and their heedless, uncomprehending parents. “Are we orphans now?” one of Schwartzman’s kids asks. “Are you planning to abandon us?” Long pause. “I was considering it,” he admits, sheepishly. It’s the theme Anderson dealt with best in The Royal Tenenbaums, the last film of his that dug down into something that exceeded or escaped the director’s exquisitely manicured designs. There were shards of genuine pain — Richie’s suicide attempt, Margot’s chain-smoking in the bathroom — glinting amid the pink and amber production design.

This is amazing. Julia Garner is incredible. Every frame, every second of this film is perfect. And the director, Kitty Green, is from Melbourne!

The Banshment
The Return won in 2003 vijf Gouden Leeuwen. Voor regisseur Andrei Zvjagintsev, die later Levithian zou maken, was de taak met een waardige opvolger te komen. Dat werd: The Banishment.

On Chesil Beach
This is a terrible review but it does get one thing right : Saoirse Ronan is brilliant. The scene on the beach is completely hearbreaking.

Matthew McConaughey : the beat of his own drum
Matthew McConaughey : the beat of his own drum
Matthew McConaughey was playing the bongos naked and stoned at 2.40am at his home in Austin. By his telling, he was “winding down” after a 48-hour bender following a triumphant victory by his beloved Texas Longhorns — “it was time to smoke a bowl . . . time to stand over my drum set and follow the rhythm of the blues” — when two policemen rudely burst in. He refused to allow them to protect his modesty with a blanket: “I’m not putting shit on! My naked ass is proof I was mindin’ my own business!”

The best movies are about women and the best movies about love are made by women. This is an achingly beautiful and poignant movie about women loving women.

the three virtues — which to my mind constitute the artist. I shall name them at once: vigilance, wisdom, and, most paradoxical of all, fragility.
…fragility oh dear god. yes. i am broken, does that count?
