All this is delightful but curiously depthless, and you may exit the cinema feeling as if you’ve been trying to survive on a diet of macaroons. If there’s a theme or resonant emotion poking through the tissue-paper, it is the age-old Anderson chestnut of the struggle between brainiac kids and their heedless, uncomprehending parents. “Are we orphans now?” one of Schwartzman’s kids asks. “Are you planning to abandon us?” Long pause. “I was considering it,” he admits, sheepishly. It’s the theme Anderson dealt with best in The Royal Tenenbaums, the last film of his that dug down into something that exceeded or escaped the director’s exquisitely manicured designs. There were shards of genuine pain — Richie’s suicide attempt, Margot’s chain-smoking in the bathroom — glinting amid the pink and amber production design.

In zijn uitstekende biografie beschrijft Jos Versteegen hoe Hans Keilson zichzelf telkens opnieuw wist uit te vinden als schrijver, geliefde, vader...
Keilson wist dat de verwerking in fasen verliep en dat trauma eigenlijk nooit overging.
In Der Tod des Widersachers analyseert Keilson het fenomeen haat: vijanden kunnen niet zonder elkaar, ook in haat zit een perverse vorm van fascinatie. Zonder dat ze worden benoemd, gaat deze roman over Hitler en zijn slachtoffers. Deze analyse werd in 1947 slecht begrepen, alsof Keilson de wandaden van Hitler bagatelliseerde, wat hij uiteraard niet deed. Hij wilde deze zieke geest begrijpen. Treffend is wat Versteegen in de epiloog schrijft: ‘Had hij een gesprek met Hitler kunnen voeren, dan was het gegaan over wat er toch gebeurd was in zijn leven dat hij zo’n grenzeloze haat had ontwikkeld.’

Ze stelde dat het onderzoek daarnaar te generaliserend was en geen oog had voor de benarde positie waarin de Nederlandse militairen zaten. Toen ze er door Sjoerd Sjoerdsma op werd gewezen dat al deze nuances uitgebreid beschreven staan in het rapport en dat ze dat misschien even moet lezen, hield ze voet bij stuk: ze gaat geen D66-opdrachtjes uitvoeren. Zelfs als er in de aanklacht letterlijk staat dat je iets niet zo moet opvatten, kun je het ongestraft toch zo opvatten.
