So ok. It’s actually a PSA, and I absolutely know this could help a lot of people. But to someone like me, someone who’s still in financial recovery 6 years after a 5 year divorce process that utterly destroyed me financially¹, someone who’s always making a conscious effort to remain as on top of the bills as possible, seeing this email sent me into immediate “holy crap, it’s late !!!” mode.

This is as classic a case of a dark pattern² as I’ve ever seen, and I’m pretty pissed about it. This is flat out irresponsible. Today is Sept 15th. My bill isn’t due until the 28th or 29th, which I had to log into the power company’s site to verify.

Upon logging into the site, I was immediately presented a pop-up that went over all this again, but without the neat little — TINY — disclaimer that this is promotional material. They were treating me like my power bill was late. This is straight up some kind of bullshit!

Neat design case. The author claims it's a dark pattern - which implies intent by the content provider. But is it? The author is in a particular situation and clearly more sensitive (than average?) to finances. How sensitive is he? Is he within the included user range intended by the content provider? He seems to think so. I'm not so sure. It think it's possible that the content provider is not intentionally trying to coerce users. This could simply be an accidental misinterpretation based on personal circumstance that is both perfectly natural and not the result of nefarious behaviour by the content provider.
