Silicon Valley Chosen for $4 Billion Chip Research Center
Silicon Valley Chosen for $4 Billion Chip Research Center https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/silicon-valley-chosen-for-4-billion-chip-research-center/
Silicon Valley got its name from computer chips, but no longer plays a central role in shaping how they are made. A major supplier to the industry hopes to change that.
Applied Materials, the biggest maker of machines for producing semiconductors, said on Monday that it planned to build a massive research facility near its hometown, Santa Clara, Calif., to allow chip makers and universities to collaborate on advances to make more powerful chips. Silicon Valley hasn’t seen a comparable semiconductor construction project in more than 30 years, industry analysts say.
The company expects to invest up to $4 billion in the project over seven years, with a portion of that money coming from federal subsidies, while creating up to 2,000 engineering jobs.
The plan is the latest in a string of chip-related projects spurred by the CHIPS Act, a $52 billion package of subsidies that Congress passed last year to reduce U.S. dependence on Asian factories for the critical components. What sets Applied Materials’ move apart is that it focuses on research, rather than manufacturing, and is a substantial new commitment to the industry’s original hub.
Chip makers that grew up in Silicon Valley have long chosen to build new “fabs,” the sophisticated factories that fabricate chips from silicon wafers, in less costly states and countries. But Applied Materials is betting that technical talent at nearby universities and the local companies that design chips will spur innovation quickly, making up for cost differences with other locations.
“You can connect more leaders in this ecosystem here than anyplace in the world,” said Gary Dickerson, the chief executive of Applied Materials. “There’s no place like this.”
Applied Materials hosted an event on Monday in Sunnyvale, Calif., to discuss the project, drawing a large audience that included employees, customers, city officials and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The company said it would use a 150-pound piece of silicon, which one executive called “easily the biggest piece of silicon in Silicon Valley,” as a cornerstone for the new center.
Politicians from both parties overwhelmingly supported the CHIPS Act, partly out of fears that China will one day exert control over Taiwan and factories there that produce the most advanced chips. Besides encouraging domestic chip manufacturing, the legislation allocated about $11 billion to spur related research and development.
Chip research now takes place in several phases in multiple locations, including university labs and collaborative centers such as the Albany NanoTech Complex in New York. Applied Materials participates with other companies in that center and operates a research fab in Silicon Valley where chip makers can work with its machines and those of other toolmakers.
But many of the core chores in developing new production processes are carried out by chip manufacturers in fabs outfitted with a broad array of equipment. The proposed center, which Applied Materials calls Epic, is set to have ultraclean production space bigger than three football fields and is designed to give university researchers and other engineers comparable resources to experiment with new materials and techniques for creating advanced chips.
One goal is to reduce the time it takes for new ideas to flow from the research labs to companies designing new manufacturing gear, information that is now often delayed as it is filtered through the chip makers.
“The trouble is, those customers need time to figure out what they need,” said H.-S. Philip Wong, a Stanford professor of electrical engineering who was briefed on the company’s plans. “There is a big hole in there.”
Applied Materials also said chip makers would be able to reserve space in the center and try out new tools before they were commercially available.
The plan hinges partly on whether Applied Materials can win subsidies under the CHIPS Act, which the Commerce Department says has already attracted expressions of interest from more than 300 companies. Mr. Dickerson said that the company planned to build the center in any case, but that government funding could affect the project’s scale.
Assuming the center evolves as planned, it could substantially bolster Silicon Valley’s role in the evolution of chips, said G. Dan Hutcheson, vice chair at the market research firm TechInsights.
“It really is a vote of confidence for the Valley,” he said.

President Biden nominates a fresh face to break FCC deadlock
President Biden nominates a fresh face to break FCC deadlock https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/president-biden-nominates-a-fresh-face-to-break-fcc-deadlock/
President Joe Biden nominated Anna Gomez, a veteran government telecom lawyer, to serve as the third Democrat at the Federal Communications Commission on Monday.
Gomez’s confirmation would unlock a more than two-year FCC stalemate, allowing the agency to approve more contentious telecom regulations like reinstating nationwide net neutrality protections. As of publication, it’s unclear when the Senate plans to schedule its first confirmation hearing on Gomez’s nomination.
“I congratulate Anna Gomez on her nomination to serve as FCC Commissioner,” FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement Monday. “She brings with her a wealth of telecommunications experience, a substantial record of public service, and a history of working to ensure the U.S. stays on the cutting edge of keeping us all connected.
“She brings with her a wealth of telecommunications experience”
The nomination of Gomez, a longtime government lawyer turned corporate law partner, comes months after Biden’s previous pick, Gigi Sohn, withdrew her nomination. First nominated in October 2021, Sohn’s nomination was a huge win for progressives who favored her decades of experience in public advocacy work. Sohn previously served as an aide to former FCC Chair Tom Wheeler, who first implemented net neutrality protections in 2015.
Sohn’s nomination was met with an intense and oftentimes bad-faith opposition campaign spearheaded by Republicans. The campaign drew out her confirmation process for more than 16 months before she stepped away.
“I could not have imagined that legions of cable and media industry lobbyists, their bought-and-paid-for surrogates, and dark money political groups with bottomless pockets would distort my over 30-year history as a consumer advocate into an absurd caricature of blatant lies,” Sohn said in a statement at the time.

LinkedIn brings its verification tools to job posts adds new message warnings for potential scams
LinkedIn brings its verification tools to job posts, adds new message warnings for potential scams https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/linkedin-brings-its-verification-tools-to-job-posts-adds-new-message-warnings-for-potential-scams/
After launching its verification features last month, LinkedIn is now bringing verification to job posts, the company announced on Monday. LinkedIn is also introducing new message warnings that will alert users if messages on the platform include high-risk content that could potentially include scam activity.
The company will now start showing verifications related to a job post, displaying verified information about a job poster or their company. When you see verifications on job posts, that means there is information that has been verified as authentic by the job poster, LinkedIn or one of its partners. The verified information will show whether the poster is affiliated with an official company page, has verified their work email or workplace, or their government ID was verified through CLEAR, which is a secure identity platform.

“We’re showing these verifications to help you feel confident in your search and give recruiters the opportunity to build trust with potential candidates,” the company wrote in a blog post. “Verifications on job postings are just rolling out, and as we expand access to our free verification tools, you’ll see even more across the jobs you’re exploring.”
As for the new message warnings, LinkedIn will now alert you when messages look like they could be scams. For example, the platform will alert you if a message asks you to take the conversation to another platform, as that can sometimes be a sign of a scam. The warnings will also give users the option to report the content without letting the sender know.
The new feature is arriving as LinkedIn’s latest transparency report found an increase of spam and scam activity on the platform. Between July and December of last year, LinkedIn proactively removed 90.95 million pieces of spam and scam content. The company says its automated defenses stopped 99.3% of this content and its teams manually removed the rest.

Last month, LinkedIn introduced new ways to verify your identity and where you work. Unlike with Twitter and Meta, LinkedIn’s new verification measures don’t include paid subscriptions or blue checkmarks. At the time, LinkedIn said it believes verification should be available for everyone, which is why its verification features will be available for free.
Unlike Twitter and Meta, which bundled verification with additional features, LinkedIn is choosing to keep its verification features focused on confirming users’ identifies in the hopes of providing an extra layer of protection when it comes to fake or scam accounts.

Meta Fined $1.3 Billion for Violating E.U. Data Privacy Rules
Meta Fined $1.3 Billion for Violating E.U. Data Privacy Rules https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/meta-fined-1-3-billion-for-violating-e-u-data-privacy-rules/
Meta on Monday was fined a record 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) and ordered to stop transferring data collected from Facebook users in Europe to the United States, in a major ruling against the social media company for violating European Union data protection rules.
The penalty, announced by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, is potentially one of the most consequential in the five years since the European Union enacted the landmark data privacy law known as the General Data Protection Regulation. Regulators said the company failed to comply with a 2020 decision by the E.U.’s highest court that data shipped across the Atlantic was not sufficiently protected from American spy agencies.
The ruling announced on Monday applies only to Facebook and not Instagram and WhatsApp, which Meta also owns. Meta said it would appeal the decision and that there would be no immediate disruption to Facebook’s service in the Europe Union.
Several steps remain before the company must cordon off the data of Facebook users in Europe — information that could include photos, friend connections, direct messages and data collected for targeting advertising. The ruling comes with a grace period of at least five months for Meta to comply. and the company’s appeal will set up a potentially lengthy legal process.
Meta also could avoid the ruling’s harshest penalties if European Union and American officials strike a new data-sharing pact now being negotiated that would provide legal protections for Meta and scores of other companies to continue moving information between the United States and Europe. A preliminary deal was announced last year.
The E.U. decision shows how government policies are upending the borderless way that data has traditionally moved. As a result of data-protection rules, national security laws and other regulations, companies are increasingly being pushed to store data within the country where it is collected, rather than allowing it to move freely to data centers around the world.
The case against Meta stems from U.S. policies that give intelligence agencies the ability to intercept communications from abroad, including digital correspondence. In 2020, an Austrian privacy activist, Max Schrems, won a lawsuit to invalidate a U.S.-E.U. pact, known as Privacy Shield, that had allowed Facebook and other companies to move data between the two regions. The European Court of Justice said the risk of U.S. snooping violated the fundamental rights of European users.
“Unless U.S. surveillance laws get fixed, Meta will have to fundamentally restructure its systems,” Mr. Schrems said in a statement on Monday. The solution, he said, was likely a ”federated social network” in which most personal data would stay in the E.U. except for “necessary” transfers like when a European sends a direct message to somebody in the United States.
On Monday, Meta said it was being unfairly singled out for data-sharing practices used by thousands of companies.
“Without the ability to transfer data across borders, the internet risks being carved up into national and regional silos, restricting the global economy and leaving citizens in different countries unable to access many of the shared services we have come to rely on,” Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, and Jennifer Newstead, the chief legal officer, said in a statement.
The ruling, which is a record fine under the General Data Protection Regulation, or G.D.P.R., has the potential to bruise Facebook’s business in Europe, particularly if it affects the company’s ability to target ads. Last month, Susan Li, Meta’s chief financial officer, told investors that about 10 percent of its worldwide ad revenue came from ads delivered to Facebook users in E.U. countries. In 2022, Meta had revenue of nearly $117 billion.
Meta and other companies are counting on a new data agreement between the United States and the European Union to replace the one invalidated by European courts in 2020. Last year, President Biden and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Union, announced the outlines of a deal in Brussels, but the details are still being negotiated.
Without a deal, the ruling against Meta shows the legal risks that companies face in continuing to move data between the European Union and United States.
Meta faces the prospect of having to delete vast amounts of data about Facebook users in the European Union, said Johnny Ryan, senior fellow at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. That would present technical difficulties given the interconnected nature of internet companies.
“It is hard to imagine how it can comply with this order,” said Mr. Ryan, who has pushed for stronger data-protection policies.
The decision against Meta comes almost exactly on the five-year anniversary of G.D.P.R. Initially held up as a model data privacy law, many civil society groups and privacy activists have said it has not fulfilled its promise because of lack of enforcement.
Much of the criticism has focused on a provision that requires regulators in the country where a company has its European Union headquarters to enforce the far-reaching privacy law. Ireland, home to the regional headquarters of Meta, TikTok, Twitter, Apple and Microsoft, has faced the most scrutiny.
On Monday, Irish authorities said they were overruled by a board made up of representatives from E.U. countries. The board insisted on the €1.2 billion fine and forcing Meta to address past data collected about users, which could include deletion.
“The unprecedented fine is a strong signal to organizations that serious infringements have far-reaching consequences,” said Andrea Jelinek, the chairwoman of the European Data Protection Board, the E.U. body that set the fine.
Meta has been a frequent target of regulators under the G.D.P.R. In January, the company was fined €390 million for forcing users to accept personalized ads as a condition of using Facebook. In November, it was fined another €265 million for a data leak.

Meta slapped with $1.3 billion fine for sending EU user data to the U.S. https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/meta-slapped-with-1-3-billion-fine-for-sending-eu-user-data-to-the-u-s/
Facebook’s parent company Meta has been fined 1.2 billion euro ($1.3 billion) for breaching the European Union’s data protection rules.
The issue revolves around the way Facebook handled European user data. According to Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), which announced the results(opens in a new tab) of its inquiry into Meta Ireland on Monday, Facebook’s transferring of user data from Europe to the U.S. was in breach of Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules.

In a nutshell, when Facebook takes personal data from its customers in the EU, and transfers it over to the U.S., the data can potentially be shared with U.S. intelligence services. A deal called the Privacy Shield used to allow free transfer of EU user data to companies in the U.S. until 2020, when the EU’s Court of Justice determined it didn’t really protect(opens in a new tab) EU users’ data from U.S. surveillance. But Facebook continued to transfer EU users’ personal data even after the Privacy Shield was invalidated, thus triggering the inquiry by the EU’s regulators.
With this fine, Facebook will be the unwilling record-holder for the biggest ever fine handed by the EU, surpassing Amazon which was slapped with an $886 million fine over (surprise) a GDPR breach in 2021. According to Euronews(opens in a new tab), Meta plans to appeal the decision.

The DPC also banned Facebook (but not other Meta companies such as Instagram) from transferring users’ personal data to the U.S. in the future. The company now has five months until it has to stop the data transfers, and six months until it has to delete the data it’s already sent.
Meta previously said it might be forced to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe if the company is rendered unable to send user data to the U.S. But this might be averted if the EU and U.S. manage to reach a new agreement on data transfers from the EU to the U.S., which could happen(opens in a new tab) over the next couple of months.

Meta hit with record-breaking $1.3 billion fine over Facebook data transfers to the US
Meta hit with record-breaking $1.3 billion fine over Facebook data transfers to the US https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/meta-hit-with-record-breaking-1-3-billion-fine-over-facebook-data-transfers-to-the-us/
Meta has been hit with a record-breaking $1.3 billion fine (€1.2 billion) by EU data regulators, and ordered to stop transferring the Facebook data of EU citizens to the US. EU courts believe such data transfers expose EU citizens to privacy violations — a complaint that stems back to 2013 and revelations by whistleblower Edward Snowden about US mass surveillance programs.
The ruling was made by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), which said that that the current legal framework for data transfers to the US “did not address the risks to the fundamental rights and freedoms” of Facebook’s EU users and violated GDPR. The fine exceeds the previous EU record of €746 million levied against Amazon in 2021 for similar privacy violations.
Transferring data to the US is critical for Meta’s vast ad-targeting operation, which relies on processing multiple streams of personal data from its users. Last year, Meta said it would be forced to consider shutting down Facebook and Instagram in the EU it wasn’t able to send data back to the US; a warning EU politicians saw as an obvious threat. “Meta cannot just blackmail the EU into giving up its data protection standards,” replied EU lawmaker Axel Voss to the news. “Leaving the EU would be their loss.”
Previously, these data transfers were protected by a transatlantic pact known as the Privacy Shield. But this framework was declared invalid in 2020 after the EU’s top court found that it did not protect data from being scraped by US surveillance programs. This ruling was given in response to a claim by Austrian lawyer Max Schrems, whose legal battle against Facebook dates back to 2013 and the original Snowden revelations of US surveillance.
Although Meta has now been ordered to stop these data transfers, there are a number of caveats that benefit the US social media giant. First, the ruling only applies to data from Facebook, not other Meta companies like Instagram and WhatsApp. Second, there’s a five-month grace period before Meta has to stop future transfers, and a six-month deadline to stop holding current data in the US. Third, and most important, the EU and US are currently negotiating a new deal to transfer data that could be in place as early as this summer and as late as October.
Despite the record-breaking size of the fine, experts expressed doubt that it will change anything fundamental about Meta’s privacy practices. “A billion-euro parking ticket is of no consequence to a company that earns many more billions by parking illegally,” Johnny Ryan, a senior fellow at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, told The Guardian this weekend.
Others were more triumphant. “We are happy to see this decision after ten years of litigation,” said Schrems, whose 2013 legal challenge is the origin of today’s ruling, in a press release. “The fine could have been much higher, given that the maximum fine is more than 4 billion and Meta has knowingly broken the law to make a profit for ten years.”
Meta itself described the fine as “unjustified and unnecessary” in a blog post written by Meta’s president for global affairs, Nick Clegg, and the company’s chief legal officer, Jennifer Newstead. The company stressed that it’s only one of “thousands” of companies that use similar legal frameworks to transfer data.
“We are appealing these decisions and will immediately seek a stay with the courts who can pause the implementation deadlines, given the harm that these orders would cause, including to the millions of people who use Facebook every day,” write Clegg and Newstead.
Schrems predicts that Meta’s difficulties here are not over. He thinks any legal appeal of today’s decision by the company will be unsuccessful and that the forthcoming EU-US data transfer protocol still won’t satisfy the EU’s privacy regulations in court. “Meta plans to rely on the new deal for transfers going forward, but this is likely not a permanent fix,” said Schrems. “Unless US surveillance laws gets fixed, Meta will likely have to keep EU data in the EU.”
Update, Monday 22nd May, 05:26AM ET: Story updated to add more details from the DPC’s ruling and reaction from Max Schrems and Meta.

Eight years after a controversy over Black people being mislabeled by image analysis software — and despite big advances in computer vision — the tech giants still fear repeating the mistake.
May 22, 2023
When Google released its stand-alone Photos app in May 2015, people were wowed by what it could do: analyze images to label the people, places and things in them, an astounding consumer offering at the time. But a couple of months after the release, a software developer, Jacky Alciné, discovered that Google had labeled photos of him and a friend, who are both Black, as “gorillas,” a term that is particularly offensive because it echoes centuries of racist tropes.
In the ensuing controversy, Google prevented its software from categorizing anything in Photos as gorillas, and it vowed to fix the problem. Eight years later, with significant advances in artificial intelligence, we tested whether Google had resolved the issue, and we looked at comparable tools from its competitors: Apple, Amazon and Microsoft.
There was one member of the primate family that Google and Apple were able to recognize — lemurs, the permanently startled-looking, long-tailed animals that share opposable thumbs with humans, but are more distantly related than are apes.
Google’s and Apple’s tools were clearly the most sophisticated when it came to image analysis.
Yet Google, whose Android software underpins most of the world’s smartphones, has made the decision to turn off the ability to visually search for primates for fear of making an offensive mistake and labeling a person as an animal. and Apple, with technology that performed similarly to Google’s in our test, appeared to disable the ability to look for monkeys and apes as well.
Consumers may not need to frequently perform such a search — though in 2019, an iPhone user complained on Apple’s customer support forum that the software “can’t find monkeys in photos on my device.” But the issue raises larger questions about other unfixed, or unfixable, flaws lurking in services that rely on computer vision — a technology that interprets visual images — as well as other products powered by A.I.
Mr. Alciné was dismayed to learn that Google has still not fully solved the problem and said society puts too much trust in technology.
“I’m going to forever have no faith in this A.I.,” he said.
Computer vision products are now used for tasks as mundane as sending an alert when there is a package on the doorstep, and as weighty as navigating cars and finding perpetrators in law enforcement investigations.
Errors can reflect racist attitudes among those encoding the data. In the gorilla incident, two former Google employees who worked on this technology said the problem was that the company had not put enough photos of Black people in the image collection that it used to train its A.I. system. As a result, the technology was not familiar enough with darker-skinned people and confused them for gorillas.
As artificial intelligence becomes more embedded in our lives, it is eliciting fears of unintended consequences. Although computer vision products and A.I. chatbots like ChatGPT are different, both depend on underlying reams of data that train the software, and both can misfire because of flaws in the data or biases incorporated into their code.
Microsoft recently limited users’ ability to interact with a chatbot built into its search engine, Bing, after it instigated inappropriate conversations.
Microsoft’s decision, like Google’s choice to prevent its algorithm from identifying gorillas altogether, illustrates a common industry approach — to wall off technology features that malfunction rather than fixing them.
“Solving these issues is important,” said Vicente Ordóñez, a professor at Rice University who studies computer vision. “How can we trust this software for other scenarios?”
Michael Marconi, a Google spokesman, said Google had prevented its photo app from labeling anything as a monkey or ape because it decided the benefit “does not outweigh the risk of harm.”
Apple declined to comment on users’ inability to search for most primates on its app.
Representatives from Amazon and Microsoft said the companies were always seeking to improve their products.
Bad Vision
When Google was developing its photo app, which was released eight years ago, it collected a large amount of images to train the A.I. system to identify people, animals and objects.
Its significant oversight — that there were not enough photos of Black people in its training data — caused the app to later malfunction, two former Google employees said. The company failed to uncover the “gorilla” problem back then because it had not asked enough employees to test the feature before its public debut, the former employees said.
Google profusely apologized for the gorillas incident, but it was one of a number of episodes in the wider tech industry that have led to accusations of bias.
Other products that have been criticized include HP’s facial-tracking webcams, which could not detect some people with dark skin, and the Apple Watch, which, according to a lawsuit, failed to accurately read blood oxygen levels across skin colors. The lapses suggested that tech products were not being designed for people with darker skin. (Apple pointed to a paper from 2022 that detailed its efforts to test its blood oxygen app on a “wide range of skin types and tones.”)
Years after the Google Photos error, the company encountered a similar problem with its Nest home-security camera during internal testing, according to a person familiar with the incident who worked at Google at the time. The Nest camera, which used A.I. to determine whether someone on a property was familiar or unfamiliar, mistook some Black people for animals. Google rushed to fix the problem before users had access to the product, the person said.
However, Nest customers continue to complain on the company’s forums about other flaws. In 2021, a customer received alerts that his mother was ringing the doorbell but found his mother-in-law instead on the other side of the door. When users complained that the system was mixing up faces they had marked as “familiar,” a customer support representative in the forum advised them to delete all of their labels and start over.
Mr. Marconi, the Google spokesman, said that “our goal is to prevent these types of mistakes from ever happening.” He added that the company had improved its technology “by partnering with experts and diversifying our image datasets.”
In 2019, Google tried to improve a facial-recognition feature for Android smartphones by increasing the number of people with dark skin in its data set. But the contractors whom Google had hired to collect facial scans reportedly resorted to a troubling tactic to compensate for that dearth of diverse data: They targeted homeless people and students. Google executives called the incident “very disturbing” at the time.
The Fix?
While Google worked behind the scenes to improve the technology, it never allowed users to judge those efforts.
Margaret Mitchell, a researcher and co-founder of Google’s Ethical AI group, joined the company after the gorilla incident and collaborated with the Photos team. She said in a recent interview that she was a proponent of Google’s decision to remove “the gorillas label, at least for a while.”
“You have to think about how often someone needs to label a gorilla versus perpetuating harmful stereotypes,” Dr. Mitchell said. “The benefits don’t outweigh the potential harms of doing it wrong.”
Dr. Ordóñez, the professor, speculated that Google and Apple could now be capable of distinguishing primates from humans, but that they didn’t want to enable the feature given the possible reputational risk if it misfired again.
Google has since released a more powerful image analysis product, Google Lens, a tool to search the web with photos rather than text. Wired discovered in 2018 that the tool was also unable to identify a gorilla.
These systems are never foolproof, said Dr. Mitchell, who is no longer working at Google. Because billions of people use Google’s services, even rare glitches that happen to only one person out of a billion users will surface.
“It only takes one mistake to have massive social ramifications,” she said, referring to it as “the poisoned needle in a haystack.”

Succession Season 4 episode 9: The 14 most WTF quotes
‘Succession’ Season 4, episode 9: The 14 most WTF quotes https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/succession-season-4-episode-9-the-14-most-wtf-quotes/
Another week of Succession, another barrage of impressively shocking, cringey and downright wince-inducing moments.
Season 4 , episode 8 was a tough one to top, but episode 9, which revolves around Logan’s funeral, certainly makes a decent go of it.
SEE ALSO:
I love ‘Succession’, but there’s 1 tiny planning detail I can’t get my head around
From Roman (Kieran Culkin) making inappropriate jokes about Shiv’s (Sarah Snook) pregnancy, to Connor (Alan Ruck) being Connor, here are the most WTF quotes from episode 9.
1. “Don’t be a pussy dude, what you don’t like these fucking ratings? It’s discord, man. Discord makes my dick hard.” — Roman
Roman starts episode 9 pretty much where he left off the previous episode — being gleefully nihilistic about the consequences of someone as terrible as far-right, racist, white supremacist Congressman Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk) becoming president.
2. “Get Ebba to bury those numbers. It’s just so golden.” — Shiv
This is Shiv, cheerfully speaking to GoJo CEO Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) on the phone about the news being so terrible that it’s a “golden” time for him to leak the fact his subscriber numbers are a massive lie.
3. “I’m going to go to court to get an emergency court order to stop you leaving the city!” — Kendall
It’s probably fair to say that Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is not at his best when he’s communicating with his ex-wife. Here he’s so desperate to force his family to come to his dad’s funeral that he’s threatening them, despite Rava (Natalie Gold) having some very legitimate concerns about the riots in the city.
4. “Is it mine?” — Roman
Yep, that’s the first thing Roman says after his sister tells him she’s pregnant.
5. “If I see you breastfeeding, I am gonna have to jerk off.” — Roman
Shortly after, he follows it up with this touching sentiment.
Shiv looks permanently unimpressed when speaking to Roman.

6. “Nice timing, Jess. Lovely day to tell me. Really thoughtful.” — Kendall
Clearly still in a mood after being terrible to his ex-wife, Kendall then bullies his assistant Jess (Juliana Canfield) into telling him the reason she’s booked them in for a one-on-one meeting on Monday. She doesn’t want to tell him on the day of his dad’s funeral, but he insists. and when she does tell him it’s because she wants to move on to another job? He angrily puts his shades back on and throws a massive sulk.
7. “I think it’s great that Mencken’s a racist and he won’t let a dirty foreigner buy the company, but I still think we need to get the board and brass rallying round the old orphans here, don’t you think?” — Roman
Here’s Roman once again casually cracking jokes about how he’s almost single-handedly managed to get a racist president elected purely to squash the GoJo deal.
8. “Marcia’s looking chic. Yummy. Sexy funeral lady. If you’re weirded out by that, wait ’till I have sex with her on dad’s coffin.” — Roman
This one sort of speaks for itself, but the best bit might be Kendall’s completely blank, impassive reaction.
9. “How much of you is glad?” — Gerri
You can always rely on Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) to tell it how it is, especially now Logan (Brian Cox) has passed. As the person who should have been Waystar Royco’s CEO, Gerri’s response to Frank (Peter Friedman) lamenting “he’s really gone” is exactly as blunt as you’d hope.

Jeremy Strong on how he approached is roles for ‘Succession’ and ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’
10. “Sally-Anne was my Kerry, so to speak. It’s all water under the bridge now.” — Lady Caroline Collingwood
When Logan’s ex-wife Lady Caroline Collingwood (Harriet Walter) casually starts introducing all his other wives and mistresses to one another it comes as quite a shock, but the end result — Marcia (Hiam Abbass) cracking a joke about his teeth grinding before comforting Kerry (Zoe Winters) — is unexpectedly wholesome.
11. “He always believed that he brought home the polio with him which took her. I don’t even know if that’s true, but our aunt and uncle certainly did nothing to disabuse him of that notion. They let it lie with him.” — Ewan
The story Logan’s estranged brother Ewan (James Cromwell) tells during his eulogy is pretty grim, but it certainly gives a further insight into why Logan may have turned out the way he did.
You can always rely on Conner to say something weird.
Credit: Macall B. Polay/HBO
12. “I was crazy for cryogenics, but yeah — I wouldn’t say no to a top bunk.” — Conner
Connor’s lines are a different kind of WTF most other character’s, but still pretty WTF nonetheless. This is what he says as he’s looking around his dad’s roomy tomb and deciding if he wants to be buried there some day.
13. “He sounds like a sow that’s about to get the stun gun and knows it.” — Karl
Sure, there are a few sympathetic glances from the audience when Roman breaks down during his father’s eulogy, but it isn’t long before Karl (David Rasche) is gleefully replaying a clip of the high-pitched noise Roman makes when he’s crying.
14. “Fuck you! Fuck you, you piece of shit! You’ve no fucking idea! No idea! Morons!” — Roman
The Roman that ends episode 9 is a long way removed from the cheerful Roman that starts episode 9. Here he’s fallen so far that he’s resorted to screaming at protestors in the street with zero regard for his own safety.
Succession is now streaming on HBO Max(opens in a new tab), with new episodes airing at 9 p.m. ET Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.

China bans Micron chips in key infrastructure over national security risks
China bans Micron chips in key infrastructure over ‘national security’ risks https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/china-bans-micron-chips-in-key-infrastructure-over-national-security-risks/
China has banned some sales of Micron products after launching a probe into the American memory chip giant for cybersecurity risks in early April.
The decision is widely seen as part of the tit-for-tac in the ongoing U.S.-China economic competition, which has started to upend a deeply intertwined global tech supply chain.
Last year, the U.S. added China state-backed memory chip maker Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation to the entity list, barring U.S. companies from supplying it without approval. The U.S. has also restricted Nvidia from exporting H100, its state-of-the-art GPU for generative AI training, to China.
The Cyberspace Administration of China on Sunday told domestic firms that provide “key information infrastructure” to stop buying from Micron. Products of Micron “have serious cybersecurity issues and pose a big risk to the country’s key information supply chains, raising cybersecurity concerns.”
Micron, which opened its first factory in China 16 years ago, specializes in producing computer memory and data storage such as dynamic random-access memory, known as DRAM, and flash memory. China is its third-largest market, accounting for 10.7% of its annual revenue in 2022. We’ve reached out to Micron for comment.
“Key information infrastructure”, as China defines it, includes telecommunication, energy, transportation, finance, defense and any other area that concerns national interests.
The authority did not specify in what ways Micron poses a cybersecurity risk, but it did cite China’s Cybersecurity Law that took effect in 2016, a wide-ranging regulation aimed at strengthening the government’s oversight on the internet, with rules like real-name verification and storing local user data on local servers.
Micron anticipated its challenges in China in its 2022 annual report.
In particular, we face the threat of increasing competition as a result of significant investment in the semiconductor industry by the Chinese government and various state-owned or affiliated entities, such as Yangtze Memory Technologies Co., Ltd. (“YMTC”) and ChangXin Memory Technologies, Inc. (“CXMT”), that is intended to advance China’s stated national policy objectives. In addition, the Chinese government may restrict us from participating in the China market or may prevent us from competing effectively with Chinese companies.
The ban could benefit Micron’s competitors in China, the South Korean giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. But the U.S. also urged South Korea not to fill China’s market gap in memory chips if Micron gets banned, according to the Financial Times.
In response to the ban, the U.S. Department of Commerce said it will “engage directly with Chinese authorities to detail the U.S. position and will engage with key allies and partners to address what it termed as distortions of the memory-chip market caused by China’s actions.”
In recent years, China has been working to shore up its technological self-reliance in key industries like advanced semiconductors, which have historically depended on foreign suppliers. For example, there’s been a push to substitute foreign hardware and software with domestic alternatives across state-owned enterprises.

Patient21 a digital healthcare startup with brick-and-mortar clinics raises $108M to grow beyond Germany
Patient21, a digital healthcare startup with brick-and-mortar clinics, raises $108M to grow beyond Germany https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/patient21-a-digital-healthcare-startup-with-brick-and-mortar-clinics-raises-108m-to-grow-beyond-germany/
Patient21, a four-year-old German startup that combines a digital healthcare platform with real-world brick-and-mortar clinics, has raised €100 million ($108 million) in a Series C round of funding led by Israeli VC firm Pitango, constituting a mix of equity and debt.
Founded out of Berlin in 2019, Patient21’s platform spans pretty much the whole patient cycle, from online bookings through digital case histories, check-ins, billing, insurance, and more.
However, while telemedicine has been on something of an upwards trajectory in recent years, accelerated somewhat by the global pandemic, Patient21’s platform is notable insofar as it doesn’t offer a remote healthcare option like its U.S. counterpart Carbon Health. Instead, the company has developed proprietary software for managing patients, and then steers them toward its 50-plus outpatient clinics across Germany.
This is partly because Patient21 is largely focused on dentistry for the time-being, with more than 80% of its clinics currently targeting oral health, with the rest split between gynaecology and GP practices.
“Dentistry inherently requires in-person consultations for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment,” Patient21 co-founder and CEO Chris Muhr told TechCrunch. “The nature of dentistry involves visually inspecting oral health, utilizing diagnostic tools like x-rays, and addressing emergencies promptly. These aspects are best served through onsite consultations to ensure the highest standards of care.”
Patient21 consumer app Image Credits: Patient21
The company says it’s currently handling more than 300,00 patient visits each year, and it plans to expand to cover additional areas of healthcare in the future — at which point it may extend into virtual healthcare.
“As we continue to expand and develop our presence in human medicine, we are actively exploring the integration of telehealth solutions into our offerings,” Muhr said.
It’s worth noting that there are multiple facets to Patient21’s software, with the patient-facing app just one side. Indeed, the company also has an app for doctors and a clinic management system.
“In a sector that is increasingly supply-constrained due to staff shortages, an aging health workforce, and surges in chronic illnesses, our focus is on supporting healthcare professionals and making sure their time is used as wisely as possible,” Muhr continued. “We’ve developed a suite of clinic-facing software that accommodates the needs of our healthcare professionals and local clinics — it frees our clinical teams up from tedious administrative tasks so that they can focus on what they are best at: taking care of patients.”

Healthy business
Patient21 had previously raised around €66 million ($71 million) in funding, and with its fresh cash injection it said that it plans to grow its software and expand beyond Germany. “We expect to launch in two new European markets within the next 12 months,” Muhr noted.
Opening physical clinics also instinctively seems like a resource-intensive endeavor, but Muhr said that its clinics have become “operationally profitable” quite quickly.
“As a result, we grow with minimal equity investment needed to roll out new clinics,” he said. “Thus, most of the funding goes towards software development to further enhance our platform capabilities.
Moreover, further down the road there could be scope for Patient21 to license out its booking and patient-management software.
“Long-term we believe there will be an opportunity to form partnerships or to run clinics in the form of a franchise model, providing franchisees with software and services offering that is unique in the market,” Muhr added.
The company’s Series C round was mostly equity — we’re told “more than 70%” — and aside from lead backer Pitango, participants included PICO Venture Partners, Bertelsmann Investments, Artian, Target Global, Piton Capital, and several angel investors. The debt segment was provided by IPT Partners.

Instagram was down, but now it’s working again https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/instagram-was-down-but-now-its-working-again/
For a couple of hours on sunday evening, Instagram was down. The app’s feed was frozen, tossing users errors saying that it couldn’t refresh, while the website gave only a blank page. According to the outage tracker DownDetector, the first reports of trouble started a few minutes after 6PM ET before spiking to over 175,000 reports at its peak, but by 7:30PM ET, the issue appears to have been resolved and it’s working again.
In an email to The Verge, Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold acknowledged the outage, saying, “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing Instagram. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
Other services belonging to Instagram’s parent company Meta, like Facebook, WhatsApp, or Horizon Worlds, appear to have been unaffected. There’s no sign of any issues like the massive datacenter backbone problem that took down the company’s services for hours in 2021.
Instagram’s help page and accounts on other platforms like Facebook and Twitter hadn’t posted any updates about the outage. An Instagram-owned service like Twitter would be a good place to check, but despite the rumors and leaks, it doesn’t exist yet.
Update May 21st, 7:20PM ET: Added comment from Meta spokesperson confirming the Instagram outage.
Update May 21st, 7:42PM ET: Updated to note the outage appears to be over.

Top of the list? JB Straubel, a Tesla co-founder and former CTO, has returned as a board member.
Other items that got my attention included another delay for the next-gen Roadster, hints of two upcoming EV products and Musk’s decision to “try a little advertising.” Here’s a roundup of our coverage.
Speaking of Musk, he lost another bid to end a 2018 settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that requires oversight of some of his Tesla-related tweets. The upshot: The Twitter sitter (as some have described the role) must remain.
Alrighty, then. Onward!

Micromobbin’
May is Bike Month and Friday was National Bike to Work Day, two reminders that bikes are not just for sports and recreation — they’re a viable form of transit. That’s especially true for e-bikes, so don’t let someone tell you you’re cheating if you don’t ride a push bike to work.
But remember, e-bikes and e-scooters should be treated with care and responsibility.
A shocking video of an e-scooter catching fire in a London home has been going around. The owner of the scooter bought it off Gumtree (a Craigslist-type site) and was charging it inside when the battery caught fire, which spread rapidly. This is a PSA for safe e-scooter practices!
Here are tips and best practices on owning and storing a scooter. A few that are especially important:
Buy a scooter from a reputable company that equips its vehicles with batteries that are compliant with global standards.
Don’t charge batteries overnight while you’re asleep or while you’re away from home.
Don’t dispose of batteries in household waste or normal recycling. Find a battery recycling service.
Avoid storing and charging e-scooters and e-bikes on escape routes or communal areas of multi-occupied buildings.
and with that, onto the news nuggets …
BackPedal is a new British startup that offers e-bike theft protection via a monthly subscription. Included in that subscription are things like an integrated GPS system with LTE and a retrieval team that tracks your stolen bike and calls the cops for you. My question for the company: Do the cops — who are busy these days with increased crime in major cities — actually do anything to help people retrieve bikes?
A study commissioned by Bolt found that about half of residents in the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal want to see more micromobility parking spots and fewer car parking spots. Same.
Christchurch, New Zealand, might be the first city in the country to back a campaign for e-bike subsidies.
Citi Bike has been around for 10 years. The iconic bike-sharing program has been a staple in NYC and other cities since before it belonged to Lyft.
General Motors, in partnership with SAIC-Wuling in China, is building a super cute tiny electric pickup for the Chinese market that’s expected to cost around $14,000. It’s about the size of a Fiat 500, and potentially a great solution for urban tradespeople.
India is considering slashing its electric two-wheeler subsidies from 40% of the sale price to 15%, ostensibly to spread the incentive to a larger number of vehicles (link to paywall site).
New York City announced a $30 million RFP to create and sustain high-quality public spaces, like plazas and Open Streets, in under-resourced neighborhoods.
As I mentioned last week, there have been rumors floating around about Tier pondering an acquisition. This week, Sifted reported that European transportation super app Bolt is in late-stage acquisition talks with Tier. Tier had reportedly also been in M&A talks with Lime, but those talks ended, according to Sifted, which cited a source close to the company. I reached out to Tier, but no comment. The company only confirmed that it recently raised a convertible note from the majority of its existing investors.
“We are well financed for 2023 and we are aiming to achieve EBITDA profitability this year,” Lawrence Leuschner, Tier’s CEO, told TechCrunch.
Yamaha announced a limited-edition e-bike to celebrate its 30th year of e-bike building. The YDX-MORO 07, priced at $6,499, has a dual twin frame design that holds Yamaha’s new, lighter and smaller PW-X3 drive unit with powerful torque. It’s an all-mountain bike that has compact control switches, a minimalist display and one-finger braking power.
Deal of the week
Instead of highlighting one deal this week, how about dozens of deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars?
According to data from PitchBook, automotive-related startups raised $402 million from investors in April, up about 2% from the previous month. That flatish result is actually worth cheering because investor activity has been falling since the beginning of the year.
In January, automotive-related startups raised $1.16 billion. That figure dropped to $690.5 million in February and $394.1 million in March.
This doesn’t mean everything is unicorns and rainbows now. The chaos surrounding the Silicon Valley Bank may have ebbed, but mobility startups are competing for investor attention and capital as other buzzy areas like generative AI takeover.
Other deals that got my attention this week …
Bird has decided to issue a reverse stock split, in an attempt to get back into compliance with the New York Stock Exchange after it received a delisting notice for trading too low. Bird’s stock closed Thursday at $0.11. When the market opened Friday, Bird began trading on a 1/25 split-adjusted basis. As of May 1, there were about 286.8 million shares of Class A common stock and 34.5 million shares of Class X common stock. After the reverse stock split, Bird will have about 11.5 million Class A shares and about 1.4 million Class X shares.

Cruise and Waymo are on the cusp of securing final approval to charge fares for fully autonomous robotaxi rides throughout the city of San Francisco at all hours of the day or night. TuSimple, the once high-flying autonomous trucks company that went public in 2021, is restructuring and laying off about 30% of its global workforce as it works to preserve cash and stay in business. One of the more interesting pieces of this restructuring (the second in six months) was the decision to keep its China subsidiary. The company was also at risk of being delisted from Nasdaq, but received a temporary reprieve from the exchange.
