Sam Chaudhary takes his time. The founder of ClassDojo, an edtech consumer app that focuses on student classrooms, spent eight years building the company before introducing a formal revenue model. All while raising over tens of millions in venture capital from elite Silicon Valley investors and eyeing a big mission: become the brand families can turn to when they think about a child’s education.
Today, ClassDojo has raised over $200 million in venture capital and has its eyes on its next target, to hit $100 million in annual recurring revenue and reach over 100 million families. On this episode of TechCrunch Live taking place on April 26 at 12 pm PDT, we’ll get into how Chaudhary played the long-game in edtech and what he’d do differently if he was starting all over again. We’ll talk about opportunity in the sector in a post-pandemic landscape — and how he landed investor patience. Chaudhary will speak about his entrepreneurial journey with his investor Chris Farmer, the founder and CEO of SignalFire.

California Economy Is on Edge After Tech Layoffs and Studio Cutbacks
California Economy Is on Edge After Tech Layoffs and Studio Cutbacks https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/california-economy-is-on-edge-after-tech-layoffs-and-studio-cutbacks/
California has often been at the country’s economic forefront. Now, as fears of a national recession continue to nag, the state is hoping not to lead the way there.
While the California economy maintains its powerhouse status, outranking even those of most countries, the state’s most-powerful sectors — including tech companies and supply chain logistics — have struggled to keep their footing, pummeled by high interest rates, investor skittishness, labor strife and other turmoil.
Even the weather hasn’t cooperated. Severe flooding throughout much of the winter, caused by atmospheric rivers, has left farming communities in the Central Valley devastated, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in crop losses.
Thousands of Californians have been laid off in the last few months, the cost of living is increasingly astronomical, and Gov. Gavin Newsom revealed in January that the state faced a $22.5 billion deficit in the 2023-24 fiscal year — a plummet from the $100 billion surplus a year ago.
“It’s an EKG,” Mr. Newsom said at the time, comparing a graph of the state’s revenue to the sharp spikes and drops of the heart’s electrical activity. “That sums up California’s tax structure. It sums up the boom-bust.”
The structure, which relies in large part on taxing the incomes of the wealthiest Californians, often translates into dips when Silicon Valley and Wall Street are uneasy, as they are now. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, one of the state’s most prominent corporations, said in January that it was cutting 12,000 workers worldwide, and Silicon Valley Bank, a key lender to tech start-ups, collapsed last month, sending the federal government scrambling to limit the fallout.
This has coincided with a drop in venture capital funding as rising interest rates and recession fears have led investors to become more risk-averse. That money, which declined 36 percent globally from 2021 to 2022, according to the management consulting firm Bain & Company, is critical to Silicon Valley’s ability to create jobs.
“The tech sector is the workhorse of the state’s economy, it’s the backbone,” said Sung Won Sohn, a finance and economics professor at Loyola Marymount University. “These are high earners who might not be able to carry the state as much as they did in the past.”
Entertainment, another pillar of California’s economy, has also been in retreat as studios adjust to new viewing habits. Disney, based in Burbank, announced in February that it would eliminate 7,000 jobs worldwide.
In California alone, employment in the information sector, a category that includes technology and entertainment workers, declined by more than 16,000 from November to February, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data, which predates a recent wave of job cuts in March.
Layoffs in Big tech
After a pandemic hiring spree, several tech companies are now pulling back.
A recent survey from the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California found widespread pessimism about the economy. Two-thirds of respondents said they expected bad economic times for the state in the next year, and a solid majority — 62 percent — said they felt the state was already in a recession.
When Mr. Newsom announced the deficit earlier in the year, he vowed not to dip into the state’s $37 billion in reserves, and instead called for pauses in funding for child care and reduced funding for climate change initiatives.
Joe Stephenshaw, director of the California Department of Finance, said in an interview that he and top economists had begun to spot points of concern — persistent inflation, higher interest rates and a turbulent stock market — on the state’s horizon during the second half of last year.
“Those risks became realities,” said Mr. Stephenshaw, an appointee of the governor.
He acknowledged that the problem was driven largely by declines in high earners’ incomes, including from market-based compensation, such as stock options and bonus payments. As activity slowed, he said, interest rates rose and stock prices fell.
But the state’s problems aren’t limited to the tech industry.
California’s robust supply chain, which drives nearly a third of the state’s economy, has continued to buckle under stresses from the pandemic and an ongoing labor fight between longshoremen and port operators up and down the West Coast, which has prompted many shipping companies to rely instead on ports along the Gulf and East Coasts. Cargo processing at the Port of Los Angeles, a key entry point for shipments from Asia, was down 43 percent in February, compared with the year before.
“The longer it drags on, the more cargo will be diverted,” said Geraldine Knatz, a professor of the practice of policy and engineering at the University of Southern California, who was executive director of the Port of Los Angeles from 2006 to 2014.
Still, wherever the economic cycle is leading, California heads into it with some strengths. Although unemployment in February, at 4.3 percent, was higher than in most states, it was lower than the rate a year earlier. In the San Francisco and San Jose metropolitan areas, unemployment was below 3.5 percent, better than the national average.
Over decades, California’s economy has historically seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, part of the state’s boom-bust history. During the recession of the early 1990s, largely driven by cuts to aerospace after the end of the Cold War, California was hit much harder than other parts of the country.
In March, the U.C.L.A. Anderson Forecast, which provides economic analysis, released projections for both the nation and California, pointing to two possible scenarios — one in which a recession is avoided and another in which it occurs toward the end of this year.
“Even in our recession scenario we have a mild recession,” said Jerry Nickelsburg, director of the Anderson Forecast.
Regardless of which scenario pans out, California’s economy is likely to be better off than the national one, according to the report, which cited increased demand for software and defense goods, areas in which California is a leader. Mr. Nickelsburg also said the state’s rainy-day fund was healthy enough to withstand the decline in tax revenues.
But that shortfall could complicate the speed at which Mr. Newsom can carry out some of his ambitious, progressive policies. In announcing the deficit, Mr. Newsom scaled back funding for climate proposals to $48 billion, from $54 billion.
The fiscal outlook also casts a cloud over progressive proposals, widely supported by Democrats, who have a supermajority in the Legislature.
A state panel that has been debating reparations for Black Californians is set to release its final report by midyear. Economists have projected that reparations could cost $800 billion to compensate for overpolicing, housing discrimination and disproportionate incarceration rates. Once the panel releases its report, it will be up to lawmakers in Sacramento to decide how much state revenue would support reparations — a concept that Mr. Newsom has endorsed.
Through all this, one thing has remained constant: Many Californians say their biggest economic concern is housing costs.
The median value for a single-family home in California is about $719,000 — up nearly 1 percent from last year, according to Zillow — and recent census data shows that some of the state’s biggest metro areas, including Los Angeles and San Francisco Counties, have continued to shrink. (In Texas, where many Californians have relocated, the median home value is about $289,000.)
Still, some Californians remain optimistic.
Zeeshan Haque, a former software engineer at Google, learned in January that he was being laid off. His last day was March 31.
“It was out of nowhere and very abrupt,” said Mr. Haque, 32, who recently moved from the Bay Area to Los Angeles.
He bought a $740,000 house in the city’s Chatsworth neighborhood in February and spent time focusing on renovations. But in recent weeks, he has begun to look for a new job. He recently updated his LinkedIn avatar to show the hashtag #opentowork and said he hoped to land a new job soon.
“It’s just very competitive at this time because of so many layoffs,” he said.
Ben Casselman contributed reporting.

Ana de Armas joins a Spanish class in ‘SNL’ sketch https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/ana-de-armas-joins-a-spanish-class-in-snl-sketch/
This week Saturday Night Live decided to take advantage of having three Spanish-speaking actors in the cast as host Ana de Armas, guest musician Karol G, and cast member Marcello Hernández join a Spanish class taught by Mikey Day.
The sketch is a relatable experience for any bilingual student who just needs a language credit to graduate. Armas and Hernández gleefully flex their Spanish chops in this sketch as Day slowly has a mental breakdown as the two take over his class.

“That was a little fast, that was a little fast por me,” Day says after asking the two for their names.
As the class continues, the two Spanish speakers correct Day on how elementary his knowledge of the language is.
“Yeah just so you know, no one in our country says ‘aci aci’,” Armas tells Day.
“No that’s like if somebody says ‘how are you?’ and then you say ‘that, that’,” Hernández says.

Not-yet-unlocked potential
When The Exchange looked into Battery Ventures’ state of cloud software spending report, we started by focusing on what the title promised: fresh data on cloud software spend. and it turned out to be more encouraging than we expected.
We then looked into another piece of good news for founders: that startups building tech to automate tasks and drive quick productivity gains might be able to duck the downturn. It was based on a report data point showing that automation had risen among enterprise budget priorities.
But in the back of my mind, I also kept thinking about some of the report’s comments about generative AI — and not just because superlative takes on the topic have been ubiquitous ever since.
If anything, you could call Battery’s view on generative AI conservative, but that would be unfair. After all, the VC firm was just relaying findings from its Q1 survey, which gathered responses from 100 C-suite execs (CXOs) managing around $30 billion in spend.

Google Devising Radical Search Changes to Beat Back AI Rivals
Google Devising Radical Search Changes to Beat Back AI Rivals https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/google-devising-radical-search-changes-to-beat-back-ai-rivals/
Google’s employees were shocked when they learned in March that the South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung was considering replacing Google with Microsoft’s Bing as the default search engine on its devices.
For years, Bing had been a search engine also-ran. But it became a lot more interesting to industry insiders when it recently added new artificial intelligence technology.
Google’s reaction to the Samsung threat was “panic,” according to internal messages reviewed by The New York Times. An estimated $3 billion in annual revenue was at stake with the Samsung contract. An additional $20 billion is tied to a similar Apple contract that will be up for renewal this year.
A.I. competitors like the new Bing are quickly becoming the most serious threat to Google’s search business in 25 years, and in response, Google is racing to build an all-new search engine powered by the technology. It is also upgrading the existing one with A.I. features, according to internal documents reviewed by The Times.
The new features, under the project name Magi, are being created by designers, engineers and executives working in so-called sprint rooms to tweak and test the latest versions. The new search engine would offer users a far more personalized experience than the company’s current service, attempting to anticipate users’ needs.
Lara Levin, a Google spokeswoman, said in a statement that “not every brainstorm deck or product idea leads to a launch, but as we’ve said before, we’re excited about bringing new A.I.-powered features to search, and will share more details soon.”
Billions of people use Google’s search engine every day for everything from finding restaurants and directions to understanding a medical diagnosis, and that simple white page with the company logo and an empty bar in the middle is one of the most widely used web pages in the world. Changes to it would have a significant impact on the lives of ordinary people, and until recently it was hard to imagine anything challenging it.
A New Generation of Chatbots
Card 1 of 5
A brave new world. A new crop of chatbots powered by artificial intelligence has ignited a scramble to determine whether the technology could upend the economics of the internet, turning today’s powerhouses into has-beens and creating the industry’s next giants. Here are the bots to know:
ChatGPT. ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence language model from a research lab, OpenAI, has been making headlines since November for its ability to respond to complex questions, write poetry, generate code, plan vacations and translate languages. GPT-4, the latest version introduced in mid-March, can even respond to images (and ace the Uniform Bar Exam).
Bing. Two months after ChatGPT’s debut, Microsoft, OpenAI’s primary investor and partner, added a similar chatbot, capable of having open-ended text conversations on virtually any topic, to its Bing internet search engine. But it was the bot’s occasionally inaccurate, misleading and weird responses that drew much of the attention after its release.
Ernie. The search giant Baidu unveiled China’s first major rival to ChatGPT in March. The debut of Ernie, short for Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration, turned out to be a flop after a promised “live” demonstration of the bot was revealed to have been recorded.
Google has been worried about A.I.-powered competitors since OpenAI, a San Francisco start-up that is working with Microsoft, demonstrated a chatbot called ChatGPT in November. About two weeks later, Google created a task force in its search division to start building A.I. products, said two people with knowledge of the efforts, who were not authorized to discuss them publicly.
Modernizing its search engine has become an obsession at Google, and the planned changes could put new A.I. technology in phones and homes all over the world.
The Samsung threat represented the first potential crack in Google’s seemingly impregnable search business, which was worth $162 billion last year. Although it was not clear whether Microsoft’s work with A.I. was the main reason Samsung was considering a change after the last 12 years, that was the assumption inside Google. The contract is under negotiation, and Samsung could stick with Google.
But the idea that Samsung, which makes hundreds of millions of smartphones with Google’s Android software every year, would even consider switching search engines shocked Google’s employees.
After some workers were told that the company was looking for volunteers this month to help put together material for a pitch to Samsung, they reacted with emojis and surprise. “Wow, OK, that’s wild,” one person responded.
A Google spokesperson said that the company was continuously improving its search engine to give partners more reason to choose Google, and that Android phone makers were free to embrace technologies from different companies to improve their users’ experience.
Samsung and Microsoft declined to comment.
Google has been doing A.I. research for years. Its DeepMind lab in London is considered one of the best A.I. research centers in the world, and the company has been a pioneer with A.I. projects, such as self-driving cars and the so-called large language models that are used in the development of chatbots. In recent years, Google has used large language models to improve the quality of its search results, but held off on fully adopting A.I. because it has been prone to generating false and biased statements.
Now the priority is winning control of the industry’s next big thing. Last month, Google released its own chatbot, Bard, but the technology received mixed reviews.
Plans for the new search engine, which demonstrate Google’s ambitions to reimagine the search experience, are still in the early stages, with no clear timetable on when it will release the new search technology.
The system would learn what users want to know based on what they’re searching when they begin using it. and it would offer lists of preselected options for objects to buy, information to research and other information. It would also be more conversational — a bit like chatting with a helpful person.
But long before the search engine can be rebuilt, the Magi project will add features to the existing search engine, according to internal documents. Google has more than 160 people working full time on it, a person with knowledge of the work said.
Magi would keep ads in the mix of search results. Search queries that could lead to a financial transaction, such as buying shoes or booking a flight, for example, would still feature ads on their results pages.
That’s important for Google, since search ads are the primary way it makes money. Its chatbot, Bard, does not feature ads, and there has been anticipation in the tech industry that A.I. answers on search engines could make ads less relevant to users.
The planned search additions could also answer questions about software coding and write code based on a user’s request. Google may place an ad under the computer code answers, according to a document.
Last week, Google invited some employees to test Magi’s features, and it has encouraged them to ask the search engine follow-up questions to judge its ability to hold a conversation. Google is expected to release the tools to the public next month and add more features in the fall, according to the planning document.
The company plans to initially release the features to a maximum of one million people. That number should progressively increase to 30 million by the end of the year. The features will be available exclusively in the United States.
Google has also explored efforts to let people use Google Earth’s mapping technology with help from A.I. and search for music through a conversation with a chatbot, a Google director wrote in a document.
Other product ideas are in various stages of development. A tool called GIFI would use A.I. to generate images in Google Image results. Another tool, Tivoli Tutor, would teach users a new language through open-ended A.I. text conversations.
Yet another product, Searchalong, would let users ask a chatbot questions while surfing the web through Google’s Chrome browser. People might ask the chatbot for activities near an Airbnb rental, for example, and the A.I. would scan the page and the rest of the internet for a response.
Jim Lecinski, a former Google vice president of sales and service, said the company had been goaded into action and now had to convince users that it was as “powerful, competent and contemporary” as its competitors.
“If we are the leading search engine and this is a new attribute, a new feature, a new characteristic of search engines, we want to make sure that we’re in this race as well,” Mr. Lecinski, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University, said in an interview.
Daisuke Wakabayashi, Karen Weise and Tripp Mickle contributed reporting.

Why I’m using a keyboard phone in 2023 https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/why-im-using-a-keyboard-phone-in-2023/
For the past month, I’ve been using the Unihertz Titan Pocket, a phone released in 2021 that rocks a 3.1-inch display above a full Qwerty keyboard. To be clear, it’s been by choice — my editors didn’t assign me to do this as a prank (in fact, some of them have clowned on me for using it), and it’s not like I don’t have other options. I’ve got a perfectly good iPhone 12 Mini that I actively gave up to switch to this phone.
The first reason is that it can just be kind of fun to try something new. Or, in this case, go back to something old; my first experiences with a smartphone were stealing my dad’s Navy-issued BlackBerry to email my significant other when I was in middle school. But for the past 10 years or so, the phones I’ve used have pretty much had the exact same form factor. They’ve just changed size.
That’s also largely true for everyone else. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten as many comments on a gadget as I have the Titan Pocket. I’ve gotten several “is that a BlackBerry?” or “whoa, cool, what phone is that” comments, and I think that’s mostly down to the fact that people just aren’t used to seeing someone use this sort of phone anymore. (Though there are dozens of us! Someone who goes to my gym also has a Titan Pocket, which shocked me; I never expected to see another one in the wild.)
Thickness aside, the Titan Pocket is just as compact and holdable as an iPhone Mini.
However, the main reason I decided to switch to this phone is actually because of its main selling point: the keyboard. I’m going to be disappearing into the wilderness for a few months to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, and during that time, my main form of contact with the folks back home will be through long emails sent every week or two. I won’t be dashing off texts every hour like I normally do, which marks a pretty fundamental change to how I communicate. So why not pair that with a fundamental change in my communication device?
This phone feels like it was made for writing. The keyboard is tactile — obviously, you’re pressing down on real keys — and includes a bevy of function keys across the top that add another layer to the experience. Of course, there are shift and alt keys for accessing capital letters and some symbols, but there are also two programmable keys as well. I use the symbol key for its intended purpose, popping up a virtual keyboard that lets me enter characters that aren’t on the hardware one. The Fn key, however, I have configured to act basically like a control key.
Yes, that means I can access all of my favorite desktop keyboard shortcuts on my phone. Need to select all? Function-A. Want to search a page? Function-F. Undo? Yup, I can do that, too. I can even hit Function-L in Chrome to jump to the address bar and immediately start typing in the site I want to go to.
The utility of having a keyboard attached to your phone goes beyond the in-app or typing experience, too. When I need to launch an app on iOS, I swipe to get to the homescreen, pull down to open Spotlight, and start typing its name, tapping on its icon when it shows up. On the Titan Pocket, I double-tap the home button (if I’m not already at the launcher) and just start typing. Once I put in the app’s name, or enough of it to get it to be the first search result, I mash the enter key and it launches.
Okay, so the time savings aren’t that significant. But I do feel way cooler pressing the enter button than tapping on an icon.
Unihertz also has a system that lets you set keys as shortcuts for apps and actions. For example, no matter where I am on my phone, I can long-press the “t” key to start a new timer or the “c” key to open Chrome. It turns out that having extra buttons can be super useful if you want to get things done quickly
This phone has a lot going for it beyond the keyboard. For one, it has features that my iPhone 12 Mini, which cost a full $479 more than it, doesn’t. You know how everyone complains about how phones don’t have headphone jacks or microSD card slots anymore? The Titan Pocket does. Those are going to be very useful for me while I’m attempting to hike across the US for reasons that I explained to my colleague David Pierce on an episode of The Vergecast.
It also has an IR blaster that I can use to control my TV and oscillating fan, and if I plug some wired headphones in, I can use it as an FM radio. Plus, there’s an extra hardware button that you can program to do three separate actions based on whether you single-, double-, or long-press it. Why has the market decided that there shouldn’t be any flagship phones that have these features when so many budget handsets do?
Also: please look at this battery chart and then remember that this is a phone that’s approximately the same size as an iPhone Mini. (Admittedly, it’s a fair bit thicker, but it’s just as easy to hold, in my opinion.)
This phone can easily go two days without being charged.
Now, I’m not trying to say that this phone is perfect because it is absolutely not. Here are some of my complaints, in no particular order:
The vibration motor feels like it could’ve come from a low-end phone in 2012.
Its MediaTek Helio P70 processor was midrange when it launched in 2019 — and boy is its age noticeable.
It doesn’t support 5G or eSIMs.
It’s stuck on Android 11, likely forever, and the security patch on it is from September 2022. (Don’t hack me, pls.)
The camera is so bad I’d be better off just writing out a description of what I’m looking at rather than taking a picture of it.
I would give anything for this phone to have an actual BlackBerry-style trackpad or rollerball because manipulating a cursor on a screen this small is hell.
Despite its 6GB of RAM, I still feel like apps get kicked out of memory a lot.
The touchscreen is fine, but a lot of apps aren’t built to run on a square screen. I have to put it in a goofy letterbox mode (which is, to be fair, very cleverly built in) to view Instagram Stories, for example.
The leather holster for it is sold out, making it very difficult for me to fully complete my transformation into my dad.
Also, there’s this astoundingly annoying bug where things just kind of break if the first thing I type into a text box is a number or symbol. (At least it does if I use the keyboard to type it; the on-screen keyboard doesn’t have that problem, but some fields seem to block it from coming up.) That’s super annoying if I’m trying to, say, type in a ZIP code or respond to something with an emoticon.
and yeah, okay, now that I look at it, that’s a pretty long list of complaints. and there are also some objective points you could make against the Titan Pocket for being a good writing machine. I actually type faster on the iPhone than the Titan (59 words per minute versus 50), and the physical keyboard gets beaten even worse if I have to do something like add a special character that’s not one of the ones accessible via the alt key — the dollar sign is a common culprit, as is the semicolon. Plus, this screen simply can’t show that much text at once, meaning I have to do a lot of scrolling when I’m reading back through something to check that it makes sense.
But when I’m just using the phone to text a friend, write a note, or bang out a long email or blog post, all of those problems mostly just melt away. It’s a tactile experience that my iPhone just can’t touch, and being able to switch between apps, copying and pasting text without ever touching the screen makes me feel like a productivity deity. Sure, I may be slower at typing, but my brain has always been the roadblock to my writing speed, not my fingers. I can still type as fast as I can form coherent thoughts.
I like the iPhone’s keyboard, but even the haptics option doesn’t hold a candle to actual buttons.
This may be all in my head, but using the Pocket puts me in the mood for writing and lets me focus on what I’m doing in a way that other phones just don’t. I’m not tempted to just switch away from a draft and watch a YouTube video because, honestly, watching YouTube on this thing sucks! My wife has made fun of me because of how close I have to hold the phone to my face when I do watch videos on it.
and yeah, it’s totally fair to criticize the Titan Pocket for those shortcomings (though, really, they’re mostly inherent to all keyboard phones, as Steve Jobs pointed out while announcing the iPhone). But in some ways, they’re part of why I love this phone so much. As someone who’s spent pretty much my entire life addicted to the internet, I appreciate the tiny moment of hesitation I have before picking up my phone, and it’s not terribly usable one-handed, so I have to commit to it when I do decide to use it.
I’m absolutely not trying to argue that phones in general should be a little less convenient so that people use them less. I’m just saying that I’m happy mine is. and yes, I love that anything I do with it feels like serious business, even if I’m just typing out silly jokes to friends and co-workers. It’s hard to think of another phone that has fundamentally changed how I think about what exactly I use a phone for. and sure, when I return to society, I’ll probably go back to my iPhone. But I hope that at least some of my BlackBerry habits stick around.

The Real-World Costs of the Digital Race for Bitcoin
The Real-World Costs of the Digital Race for Bitcoin https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/the-real-world-costs-of-the-digital-race-for-bitcoin/
Some in the industry have pushed back against suggestions that it is directly responsible for any environmental harm.
A May 2022 letter to the Environmental Protection Agency, signed by many of the biggest companies, said their operations “released” no pollutants. “Bitcoin miners have no emissions whatsoever,” it said. “Associated emissions are a function of electricity generation.”
Nic Carter, a partner at a crypto-focused venture capital firm and a prominent Bitcoin advocate who told The Times he was the letter’s primary author, said he was playing a “language game” when he wrote that Bitcoin mining has no emissions. At the time, he said, he felt the industry was being unfairly singled out.
“Maybe the more sincere point is like, we’re already fully aware of the emissions associated with utilities generating grid power,” he said.
Many academics who study the energy industry said Bitcoin mining was undoubtedly having significant environmental effects.
“They’re adding hundreds of megawatts of new demand when we already face the need to rapidly cut fossil power,” said Jesse Jenkins, a Princeton professor who studies electrical grid emissions.
“If you care about climate change,” he added, “then that’s a problem.”
Flooding Into America
Bitcoin, conceived in 2008, introduced most of the world to the concept of cryptocurrencies. Instead of trusting banks to track the value of accounts, the system publishes transactions on a public ledger called a blockchain. Proponents said that cutting out middlemen would free people from financial institutions, government oversight and fees.
So-called mining is a fundamental part of the system: When a computer guesses correctly, it updates the ledger and collects six and a quarter new Bitcoins. Then the guessing game begins again.
Initially, hobbyists could win with personal computers, but as the value of each Bitcoin soared — from under $1,000 in 2017 to above $60,000 in 2021 — mining increasingly became an industrial endeavor. (The price has since dropped and, as of publication, was roughly $28,000.)
The only way for miners to better their odds is to add computing power, which requires more electricity. But as the number of guesses increases, the algorithm makes the game more difficult. This has created an energy arms race.
The mines’ scale can draw gasps from people in the power industry. A one-megawatt mine consumes more energy each day than a typical U.S. home does in two years. The electricity coursing through a 100-megawatt operation at a given moment could power about half the homes in Cleveland, according to federal data.

‘Wordle’ today: Here’s the answer, hints for April 16 https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/wordle-today-heres-the-answer-hints-for-april-16/
It’s Sunday! You made it! and what better way to celebrate the most relaxing day of the week than by tucking in to today’s Wordle. We’re here as always to help guide the way with our expert Wordle advice and the solution.
If you prefer to just be told the answer, you can scroll to the end of this article for April 16’s Wordle word to be revealed. But if you’d rather work through it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.
Where did Wordle come from?
Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle(Opens in a new tab) rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans have even sprung up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once.
Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.
Not the day you’re after? Here’s the Wordle answer for April 15.
What’s the best Wordle starting word?
The best Wordle starting word is the one that brings joy to your heart. But if what brings you joy is strategy, we have a few ideas to help you pick a word that might help you find the solution faster. One tip is to select a word that includes at least two different vowels, plus some common consonants like S, T, R, or N.
What happened to the Wordle archive?
The entire archive of past Wordle puzzles used to be available for anyone to enjoy whenever they felt like it. Unfortunately, it has since been taken down, with the website’s creator stating it was done at the request of the New York Times.
Is Wordle getting harder?
It might feel like Wordle is getting harder, but it actually isn’t any more difficult than when it first began. You can turn on Wordle’s Hard Mode if you’re after more of a challenge, though.
Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?
Though usually Wordle will only accept one correct solution per day, occasionally it will rebel against the norm and deem two different answers acceptable. This is due to changes the New York Times made to Wordle after it acquired the puzzle game.
The Times has since added its own updated word list, so this should happen even less frequently than before. To avoid any confusion, it’s a good idea to refresh your browser before getting stuck into a new puzzle.
Here’s a subtle hint for today’s Wordle answer:
Living in the past.
Does today’s Wordle answer have a double letter?

Bluesky is my favorite Twitter clone yet https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/bluesky-is-my-favorite-twitter-clone-yet/
Bluesky is really, really fun.
Yes, the platform is essentially just Twitter but decentralized. and yes, the Jack Dorsey-backed Bluesky is one of many services emulating how Twitter looks right now. But after spending a few hours in Bluesky since getting my beta invite this week, it’s so far the service where I feel the most joy.
Similar to Mastodon, Bluesky is a federated social network, which, at its most basic level, means that users can participate through different providers instead of a huge central one. The easiest comparison is email: if you have Gmail, you can send an email to somebody on Apple’s iCloud, and they can reply back to you.
Bluesky lets you pick from different hosting providers. When I joined the app on Tuesday, I picked the default, which is Bluesky’s own system. (There’s an option to join other providers, but I don’t know what options are available or how to set them up. This may be user error or ignorance.) From there, I set my username, which reads more like a domain — jaypeters.bsky.social — and I’ll talk about that a bit more later.
“It was getting pretty scene-y here”
When I first got to the “Following” feed, it was empty, but as I explored more, it didn’t take long to discover that Bluesky already has an extremely active user base that’s now dealing with an influx of newbies like me. Very soon in my Bluesky journey, I stumbled upon a post from Jay Graber, the CEO of Bluesky, that helped me get a sense of what I was in for.
“It was getting pretty scene-y here so we just emailed 5K people from our waitlist, say hi when you see them trickle on!” Graber wrote. In a reply, Graber added “densely connected subgraph of twitter power users who just joined, meek 5k people who gave us their email and filled out a form ”
Cruising the “What’s hot” section that day was a mishmash of simple internet delight.
One person quoted Graber to apologize for the “scene stuff” and to encourage new users to jump into conversations.
One person wrote “The goat, fr” with a picture of two goats.
Several people shared photos of “this is where i post from.” Many seemed serious, like a cozy room and a tiny home; others were not, like one picture of an alligator.
Somehow, somebody followed me within a minute of me joining the platform. Minutes later, a handful of other users followed me, too. It turns out I’m not that special; they all already follow more than 20,000 people, so they probably just follow every new account as it joins.
Bluesky kept feeling good throughout the week. My feed wasn’t littered with angry posts about HBO Max’s change to Max, for example — instead, the people I follow seemed most invested in maintaining Bluesky’s currently positive culture. Graber posted about why Bluesky hasn’t launched yet “against Jack’s wishes” until the team builds out moderation tooling. On Friday, people were posting pictures of their bookshelves: “shelfies.” It was enjoyable to scroll.
The challenge for Bluesky will be maintaining its positive environment, and that’s just what things its federated system — the AT Protocol — is designed to do. The protocol is still in development, but Bluesky’s stated focuses for it are decentralized social networking, algorithmic choice, and portable accounts. That means that, maybe someday, I’ll theoretically be able to hang out in a domain that isn’t also used by everybody else in the Bluesky app, choose an algorithm that serves mellower posts, and if I want to leave, easily bring my account and followers with me to another app. (It’s worth noting that Twitter owner Elon Musk has expressed an interest in letting you choose your own Twitter algorithm, but we’ll see if that actually happens.)
Bluesky’s moderation tooling could also be key to the platform’s future. The organization wants to let you apply custom filters and labels and even rely on preferred third parties to do that work for you, which could let users better tailor their social feed for what they need. “Centralized social sites use labeling to implement moderation — we think this piece can be unbundled, opened up to third-party innovation, and configured with user agency in mind,” Graber wrote in a blog post. “Anyone should be able to create or subscribe to moderation labels that third parties create.”
The network’s domain name system also doubles as a handy verification service of sorts. The current setup could mean that one day, for example, I might be able to have @jay.peters.theverge.com to show that I’m a working journalist at The Verge. Or, I could tie a domain I own to my Bluesky account to prove that I am the person I say I am. If this system takes off, it could solve a lot of the verification and moderation woes other platforms have had to deal with.
Bluesky currently feels like a simpler time on the internet
To me, Bluesky currently feels like a simpler time on the internet. It’s a feeds-based social network with a community of at least 20,000 people, meaning there’s a lot of activity and conversation, but so far, I haven’t seen much toxicity or people racing to slam dunk people in quote tweets. It feels like a platform where people are just hanging out and chatting with each other.
It’s too early to say if Bluesky and the AT protocol will see the same kind of activity as things like Mastodon and ActivityPub protocol. But for now? I’m just really enjoying the vibes in my Bluesky feed.

Meme Group on Discord Is Focus of Uproar Over Leaked Pentagon Documents
Meme Group on Discord Is Focus of Uproar Over Leaked Pentagon Documents https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/meme-group-on-discord-is-focus-of-uproar-over-leaked-pentagon-documents/
An online community of a few thousand subscribers that followed a YouTube celebrity named wow_mao had for years occupied a small, very male-centric corner of the internet. It was hosted on Discord, a social media app, where young people who were fans of wow_mao swapped humorous digital images and told edgy, sometimes tasteless, jokes.
Over the weekend, wow_mao’s niche community became a focus of international attention after it was learned that a volunteer moderator in his Discord group had posted images of leaked documents detailing secret Pentagon intelligence.
It was all a bit much for wow_mao, who said in an interview on Tuesday that he was a 20-year-old college student who lives in Britain. In a YouTube video a day earlier, he said he was an “internet micro-celebrity, and I’d like to keep it that way.”
The collision of internet youth culture and national security may have seemed bewildering, but it has happened with increasing frequency in recent years. and the surfacing of classified documents on Discord was a reminder of how the digital world has increasingly affected real life in sometimes dangerous ways.
The Biden administration has scrambled to limit the damage from the leaked information, which appears to detail national security secrets concerning a range of U.S. adversaries, including Russia and China, as well as allies like Ukraine and South Korea. The Federal Bureau of Investigation opened an inquiry into the leak on Friday, but senior U.S. officials have said little about it this week.
“We don’t know who is behind this. We don’t know what the motive is,” John F. Kirby, the National Security Council spokesman, said on Monday. “We don’t know what else might be out there.”
Perhaps no part of the internet has facilitated more free-flowing, frivolous chatter in recent years than Discord, which began as a haven for video game players before gaining mainstream appeal during the pandemic. Much of what occurs on Discord servers — the term the company uses to describe its chat groups — is innocuous, such as music fans discussing their favorite artists and Minecraft video game players swapping memes.
But the unfiltered, edgy banter in the wow_mao server, which is called the End of Wow Mao Zone, and in many other servers like it, can sometimes veer into darker territory. Those servers are sometimes described as the less venomous cousins of 4chan, the far-right anonymous message board known for sharing conspiracy theories and popularizing QAnon. Many 4chan users split their time between Discord and 4chan, sharing digital memes and chatting with friends.
Dark humor about race or ideology can eventually shape the beliefs of impressionable young people, and innocuous memes can be co-opted into symbols of hatred, researchers say.
“If you’re a young man with no prospects hanging out on 4chan, you’re definitely on some Discords and probably some pretty dark Discords,” said Dale Beran, a lecturer at Morgan State University and the author of “It Came from Something Awful: How a Toxic Troll Army Accidentally Memed Donald Trump into Office.”
An 18-year-old gunman used Discord to record his thoughts, chat with friends and share racist memes that he was collecting from 4chan before fatally shooting 10 people and injuring three others at a grocery store in Buffalo last year. He was sentenced to life in prison in February.
White supremacists also used Discord to plan the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017. Discord has taken steps to improve its content moderation since then, writing in 2020 that it has a “responsibility to ensure that Discord is not used for hate, violence or harm.”
But the site is still largely reliant on reports from users to spot problems, especially in private, invitation-only Discord servers. Discord is divided into what are essentially chat rooms, with large public groups that can have strict content moderation and smaller private ones that can have little or none at all. Discord said it was cooperating with a law enforcement investigation of the leaked documents, but declined to comment further.
In a live audio chat on the wow_mao Discord on Monday, users passed the time largely by talking about movies and complaining about their parents. But they sometimes veered into overtly racist language.
For young people, these irreverent chat rooms can hold a particular appeal.
“This is the vernacular in which their questions can be answered in the language they understand. They’ve grown up soaked in memes and ironic, winky behavior,” Mr. Beran said. He added that such communities could seem benign at first, “but taken to its extremes, it becomes a very difficult criminal problem, or a terrorist problem.”
Video game players have reportedly leaked classified military secrets in the past, to prove their point in online arguments and convince game developers to make more accurate combat vehicles.
The New York Times contacted wow_mao through his YouTube channel and the Discord server and, in an audio call made through Discord on Tuesday, he spoke at length with a New York Times reporter. He said that he spent little time on the Discord server and that he mostly focused on his YouTube channel, where he has about 250,000 subscribers, as well as on his social life and his college studies. He declined to share his real name out of safety and privacy concerns but said he was British and Filipino.
Wow_mao is not a celebrity in the traditional sense, or even among internet influencers. But despite his anonymity, his channel has gained a following over the years because his videos have struck a chord with people who share his sense of humor.
He said his material stemmed from an interest in geopolitics and history — “never this interested, my God!” — and a desire to make over-the-top videos that were funny solely because he “put so much effort into something so stupid.”
But he said he was troubled by the tenor of the Discord server. Some “very right-leaning” teenagers were most likely attracted to his irreverent content, he said, but he “absolutely” did not share their worldview.
“I’ve just let a bunch of children run wild,” wow_mao added. “I do regret, maybe, not moderating my server just a little bit more.”
But that the leaked documents had surfaced there, he said, was “hilarious.”
“It was just spread onto the nicheiest, nerdiest parts of the internet,” he said. “That’s the kind of people who would find these documents — losers. That’s who the U.S. government really has to fear.”
Young, tech-savvy people often have less respect for government, wow_mao said, “and they’ll always find it funny to mock them and cut under them in some sort of way.”
In early March, a user on the wow_mao server named Lucca uploaded page after page of the classified information, according to screenshots shared by users who had investigated the leak. The origins of the documents were reported earlier by Bellingcat.
The documents gained wider attention after they were posted two days later in a server dedicated to Minecraft, where one user appeared to share them during an argument.
“Here, have some leaked documents,” the user said, before uploading some of them.
“Nice,” another user replied.
The posts appeared to have lingered online for nearly a month before they started getting attention beyond Discord. Users on 4chan posted images from the documents as early as April 5. A pro-Russian channel on the messaging app Telegram shared the images later that day. Users on Twitter took notice, and so did the world.
The Discord servers and the users thought to be behind the documents were swarmed with attention. A Twitter account using the name MrLucca, who used the same profile photo that was found on the Lucca Discord account, said he had gotten the documents from yet another Discord server.
“Found some info from a now banned server and passed it on,” the user wrote, according to screenshots of the conversation. The Twitter and Discord accounts have since been deleted.
To users on the wow_mao server, the attention was only a brief distraction between memes and jokes. On Easter Sunday, users mourned Lucca’s departure with a meme depicting him as Jesus, rising from the grave.
For wow_mao himself, the episode was another opportunity for content. He said that the number of members in his Discord server had jumped to about 7,000 from about 4,000 before news of the documents broke.
“Any publicity’s good publicity, I guess, as long as I don’t land in prison,” he said.
He ended his YouTube video by urging viewers to support him by subscribing to his Patreon, a donation platform popular among content creators. Then he shared that video on Twitter with a message: “the cia may have put me on their watchlist.. but i should be on YOURS too!”

Quordle today: See each Quordle answer and hints for April 16
‘Quordle’ today: See each ‘Quordle’ answer and hints for April 16 https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/quordle-today-see-each-quordle-answer-and-hints-for-april-16/
If Quordle is a little too challenging today, you’ve come to the right place for hints. There aren’t just hints here, but the whole Quordle solution. Scroll to the bottom of this page, and there it is. But are you sure you need all four answers? Maybe you just need a strategy guide. Either way, scroll down, and you’ll get what you need.
What is Quordle?
Quordle is a five-letter word guessing game similar to Wordle, except each guess applies letters to four words at the same time. You get nine guesses instead of six to correctly guess all four words. It looks like playing four Wordle games at the same time, and that is essentially what it is. But it’s not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.
Is Quordle harder than Wordle?
Yes, though not diabolically so.
Where did Quordle come from?
Amid the Wordle boom of late 2021 and early 2022, when everyone was learning to love free, in-browser, once-a-day word guessing games, creator Freddie Meyer says he took inspiration from one of the first big Wordle variations, Dordle — the one where you essentially play two Wordles at once. He took things up a notch, and released Quordle on January 30(Opens in a new tab). Meyer’s creation was covered in The Guardian(Opens in a new tab) six days later, and now, according to Meyer, it attracts millions of daily users. Today, Meyer earns modest revenue(Opens in a new tab) from Patreon, where dedicated Quordle fans can donate to keep their favorite puzzle game running.
How is Quordle pronounced?
“Kwordle.” It should rhyme with “Wordle,” and definitely should not be pronounced exactly like “curdle.”
Is Quordle strategy different from Wordle?
Yes and no.
Your starting strategy should be the same as with Wordle. In fact, if you have a favorite Wordle opening word, there’s no reason to change that here. We suggest something rich in vowels, featuring common letters like C, R, and N. But you do you.
After your first guess, however, you’ll notice things getting out of control if you play Quordle exactly like Wordle.
What should I do in Quordle that I don’t do in Wordle?
Solving a Wordle puzzle can famously come down to a series of single letter-change variations. If you’ve narrowed it down to “-IGHT,” you could guess “MIGHT” “NIGHT” “LIGHT” and “SIGHT” and one of those will probably be the solution — though this is also a famous way to end up losing in Wordle, particularly if you play on “hard mode.” In Quordle, however, this sort of single-letter winnowing is a deadly trap, and it hints at the important strategic difference between Wordle and Quordle: In Quordle, you can’t afford to waste guesses unless you’re eliminating as many letters as possible at all times.
Guessing a completely random word that you already know isn’t the solution, just to eliminate three or four possible letters you haven’t tried yet, is thought of as a desperate, latch-ditch move in Wordle. In Quordle, however, it’s a normal part of the player’s strategic toolset.
Is there a way to get the answer faster?
In my experience Quordle can be a slow game, sometimes dragging out longer than it would take to play Wordle four times. But a sort of blunt-force guessing approach can speed things up. The following strategy also works with Wordle if you only want the solution, and don’t care about having the fewest possible guesses:
Try starting with a series of words that puts all the vowels (including Y) on the board, along with some other common letters. We’ve had good luck with the three words: “NOTES,” “ACRID,” and “LUMPY.” YouTuber DougMansLand(Opens in a new tab) suggests four words: “CANOE,” “SKIRT,” “PLUMB,” and “FUDGY.”
Most of the alphabet is now eliminated, and you’ll only have the ability to make one or two wrong guesses if you use this strategy. But in most cases you’ll have all the information you need to guess the remaining words without any wrong guesses.
If strategy isn’t helping, and you’re still stumped, here are some hints:
Are there any double or triple letters in today’s Quordle words?
One word has a double letter.
Are any rare letters being used in today’s Quordle like Q or Z?
Q.
What do today’s Quordle words start with?
S, B, Q, and F.
What are the answers for today’s Quordle?
Are you sure you want to know?
There’s still time to turn back.
OK, you asked for it. The answers are:
SLATE
BENCH
QUASH
FOGGY

Makoto Shinkai wants Suzume to build a bridge of memory between generations
Makoto Shinkai wants Suzume to build a bridge of memory between generations https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/makoto-shinkai-wants-suzume-to-build-a-bridge-of-memory-between-generations/
In Suzume, Your Name and Weathering with You director Makoto Shinkai’s latest film, an ordinary highschooler finds herself pulled into a life of chasing down otherworldly creatures and sealing portals that would otherwise unleash catastrophic tectonic devastation across Japan. Out of all of Shinkai’s animated features, Suzume’s one of his most direct in the way it draws upon Japan’s real-world history with natural disasters to tell an epic story that plays like a love letter to the country and all its natural beauty.
For all its focus on Japan, however, there’s an undeniable universality to many of Suzume’s messages about growing up and understanding one’s relationship with the past. While Shinkai didn’t necessarily set out to make a film that would speak to absolutely everyone, when we sat down to chat recently ahead of Suzume’s release this week, he was emphatic about his desire for the movie to speak to younger moviegoers especially.
You’ve been very frank about Suzume being a story about the existential crises Japan faces as it deals with natural disasters and problems like population decline. Both of those issues are so serious and difficult to frame as anything but negative. What was most challenging for you about telling a story that’s so honest and unflinching about the problems Japan is dealing with, even though they’re things people might not want to face head-on?
As you mentioned, the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake is a very central theme in Suzume, and I wanted to use the film to help put it all into perspective. The disaster only happened 12 years ago, but for me, it was important to put that into the context of entertainment. That combination of taking such a grave subject matter and putting it in front of an entertainment backdrop… there was a lot of resistance, I think, from the Japanese moviegoing audience. But for me, because the subject matter was so serious, it was important to give it some comic relief or put it into a more entertaining type of context.
Had I said, “Hey, I’m making a movie about the 2011 disaster; it’s an exposition documentary, and it’s like a textbook guide on how to navigate it,” I don’t think anyone would have come to see that film — especially so with younger audiences. So it was important to me that Suzume be both serious and entertaining because I think a lot of younger moviegoers either haven’t experienced this incident from 12 years ago — this massive disaster — directly, or even if they did, they were so young that they probably don’t recall it at all. Without [Suzume] being a spectacle, I don’t think people would have even been open to seeing it.
There are a lot of these issues that I think we need to come face to face with that demand our attention. But it’s hard to face them in a way or put them into a context where younger audiences will be open to discussing it. So in some ways, I think Suzume is connecting the older and younger generations through this sort of communal or unified experience.
The film’s worms are such an interesting and terrifying metaphor for Japan’s history with earthquakes, but I was really struck by the idea of closing doors being the only way to avert disaster as opposed to, say, a story’s protagonist having to just fight a big monster. Talk to me about how those ideas came to you.
When I was growing up in Japan as a young kid, it was the so-called golden era of Japan, where the economy was booming, and the population was increasing. I personally grew up in the countryside of Japan, and in spite of that, there were new homes being erected one after another. But as I became an adult, that era of economic growth and surge came to an end, and I think instead, we became more and more surrounded by stagnation or even ruins as a result of natural disaster, simple human behavior, or population decline. In my mind, that was not really the time to be opening new doors, in a sense.
That idea has stuck with me, but in the case of Suzume, I thought that making a movie about opening new doors would be unreasonable and wouldn’t resonate with Japanese audiences — partially because I was developing this movie during covid, during the lockdowns.
There was a lot of discussion at the time in Tokyo about “do we have the Olympics? Do we postpone it, or do we do it?” Even that discussion and the drive to host the games in spite of the pandemic and all the world events happening, to me, felt irresponsible to some degree. You were opening this new door and not sure of what’s on the other side without bringing closure or understanding or coming to terms with what’s behind you. I want to say a lot of the Japanese population felt the same way. There was this kind of awkward air about us, and it really wasn’t time to open new doors without first reflecting on what came before us.
You’ve spoken about Suzume partially being a rumination on Japan’s declining population, and you can feel some of those anxieties being reflected in Tamaki’s relationship with Suzume. But there’s also a distinct sense of hope there between them, especially in the way that they both seem to trust each other to make the right decisions, even as they’re bickering. What aspects of Japanese society did you want to define Suzume’s dynamic with her aunt?
When thinking about the relationship between Tamaki and Suzume, I get the sense that the very fabric of Japanese society is entrenched there — this idea of a traditional nuclear family where you have two parents and kids who are obviously connected by blood, and it’s that family’s responsibility to navigate society and conform to these social values. But I don’t think that that type of family structure is really a reality, or to demand that in our current environment is realistic because, of course, you have single mothers or children with no parents at all, and there can be different types of family structures.
In spite of all this, society demands that we conform to this ideal shape. I think there’s a huge gap there right now, and I wanted to show that there are certain parental relationships that can exist — perhaps even without the connection of blood — and kind of thought-provoke people into seeing that maybe there are other ways that we can create what we understand as a family.
We only see a tiny bit of how Daijin becomes something of a social media celebrity as he’s running around Japan, but it’s such an interesting little character detail, particularly for an antagonist. What ideas about ordinary people and society at large did you want to illustrate through Daijin’s fame?
That’s a very interesting way to see Daijin and his relationship to social media. After completing the film, only then did I realize the sort of irony of this antagonist — how we’ve turned him into a celebrity as a society. But I don’t think I considered that relationship too extensively; it was more my intent to depict the current shape of our society.
We’re surrounded by technology; everyone has a smartphone. But at the same time, in Japan especially, there are a lot of traditions and routines and ideas with deeply grounded cultural roots that are also very confining and that I think a lot of the younger generations feel trapped by.
Take Sota’s job as a closer, for example. Of course, that doesn’t actually exist, but the act of praying and willing something into existence goes all the way back to the Buddhist and Shinto roots. We can see artifacts of those traditions still in our present-day society, and there is a certain level of slightly illogical and almost inefficient behaviors that are part of our daily routine.
The purported goal with technology is always about finding ways to remove friction and inefficiency from our everyday lives despite all the routines that we undertake to maintain some kind of semblance of tradition. But there’s always a gap there, and that’s what I wanted to put into perspective with Daijin and social media.

What Good Are Wearable Computers if the Data Is Wrong?
What Good Are Wearable Computers if the Data Is Wrong? https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/what-good-are-wearable-computers-if-the-data-is-wrong/
Smartwatches from tech companies like Apple and Garmin make it easy to see a number that could reflect how old you are more accurately than your age: the VO2max, the maximum amount of oxygen that your body can use during intense exercise.
The higher your VO2max, exercise experts say, the better your cardiovascular fitness and, potentially, the longer your life. In the past, only serious athletes sought a traditional VO2max test, which involved wearing cumbersome sensors while exercising inside a lab, but now anyone can get an estimate by wearing a smartwatch and moving around.
Is it good to have access to this kind of information? and how accurate could a wearable be? In the last five months, when I fell down a VO2max rabbit hole, I learned some uncomfortable truths about my health and the limits of smartwatches.
First, let me tell you about my fitness journey. In November, while I was out celebrating my birthday, my Apple Watch delivered the most unwanted gift: a notification of a high heart rate. That led me to look at my VO2max, which the Apple Watch said was 32, well below average for a man in his late 30s.
In search of a quick solution, I bought a membership at a high-intensity interval gym, a type of training that specializes in boosting cardio fitness. Five months and many kettlebell swings and jump squats later, I felt progress. I burned fat, gained muscle and felt more energetic. The Apple Watch gave me a VO2max estimate of 40, just shy of average, and a Garmin watch that I also wore rated me at 45.
All that was left to do was to take a real VO2max test, so I found one. This is where the good news ends. A few hours after pedaling on an exercise bike with an oxygen mask strapped to my face, I got my lab results: 25, a rating of poor, far below the flattering results from the Apple Watch and Garmin. Devastating.
Dr. Ethan Weiss, a cardiologist in San Francisco who has studied wearable technology for many years, said my experiment underscored the pros and cons of using smartwatch data to explore health.
“On the one hand, you can give it credit for kicking you in the butt to tell you to go work out,” he said. “But on the other hand, now you’re sort of burned with this real test and like, ‘What do I do with this number?’”
Fortunately, after studying all the data, learning how the wearable algorithms work and talking with health experts, I arrived at a positive conclusion: Even if the smartwatch numbers were wrong, they were correct in broad strokes, and I was probably better off wearing one than not.
My experience can serve as a template for anyone trying to have a healthy relationship with technology tracking many types of health data, from sleep patterns to body fat.
A Deeper Look at the Data
Last month, my gym in Oakland, Calif., called Sweat, announced that it had teamed up with PNOĒ, a metabolic health lab, to offer clinical-grade VO2max testing, so I signed up with gusto.
The purpose of a clinical VO2max test is to measure your maximum oxygen intake at the point that you reach exhaustion. This metric — the ability for a person to breathe in oxygen and produce carbon dioxide during exercise — is a strong indicator of cardiovascular fitness.
At Sweat, the gym’s owner, Cassie Hecker, strapped an oxygen mask over my face and a heart monitor to my chest. She instructed me to pedal on an exercise bike for about 12 minutes, increasing the intensity each minute while her equipment gathered data. After I reached my maximum heart rate of 182 beats per minute and began to struggle from exhaustion, the test was done.
The test was very different from the way the wearables estimated my VO2max. The Apple Watch and Garmin study your heart rate and movement while you’re walking or running for at least 10 minutes and tally a score.
Spokespeople for Apple and Garmin referred to documents describing their methods. To inform their algorithms on how to make these estimates, Apple and Garmin ran studies involving people who were doing a real VO2max test as well as other exercises and studied their heart rates and various metrics.
The key word is “estimate.” The watches aren’t actually measuring your oxygen intake and, therefore, aren’t actually measuring your VO2max.
“It’s at best an imputed VO2max,” Dr. Weiss said. “Not only do you not have an oxygen mask, you’re not actually exerting yourself to exhaustion.”
A simple reason that my wearable estimates were so far off from my real VO2max result is that the way my body works doesn’t match the heart-rate and oxygen-intake patterns of participants in the Apple and Garmin studies. Such is the danger of putting too much trust in algorithms.
That left me with no choice but to embrace the hard truth: My VO2max result in the lab test was very low. But that statistic was only one data point. The report also showed many positives, including a very high metabolic rate and fat-burning efficiency and healthy breathing patterns.
Taking all this information together, Ms. Hecker said she rated my fitness level “average,” higher than the Apple Watch’s cardio fitness rating of “below average.” She instructed me to focus on my cardio training. (Admittedly, in the gym classes I pushed myself harder in exercises I enjoyed, like weight lifting, and tended to take it easy on the cardio exercises I found torturous, like burpees.) Not doom and gloom.
Ignore the Numbers; Follow the Trends
In the end, all the health experts I interviewed agreed that even though the wearable data — much of it flawed — had given me anxiety, I had reached a net positive. The Apple Watch nudged me to pay closer attention to my health, and as a result I’m healthier now.
The broad trends shown by the wearables were accurate: Months ago, after the pandemic had taken a toll on my body and mind, I was in my worst shape in years, and the watch numbers were low. Now, even though the watch numbers are too high, I do look and feel better, and that’s all that really matters.
That may be the best way to approach wearables — view them as a directional arrow rather than a precise measuring tool, said Steven Adams, a sports medicine doctor and personal trainer in Danville, Calif.
Whether you’re using devices to measure your progress in losing weight, getting more sleep or taking more footsteps, what you need to know is whether the numbers are going up or down. But don’t take them too seriously, because all sorts of factors could be throwing them off — a loose wrist strap, a faulty sensor or, as in my case, imperfect algorithms.
“It’s the trend that’s important, not the absolute number, because this stuff’s not accurate,” Dr. Adams said.

Elon Musk said the Twitter Files are basically dead
Elon Musk said the Twitter Files are basically dead https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/elon-musk-said-the-twitter-files-are-basically-dead/
The Twitter Files are over.
At least, that’s what Elon Musk expressed following his falling out with the project’s head writer Matt Taibbi.
“At a certain point, I think we need to move on from the Twitter Files,” Musk said(Opens in a new tab) in a Twitter Space audio chat earlier this week. “I think there’s a few things left. General, there’s not a lot that I’m aware of that’s left.”
“It’s mostly just like, you know, let’s move on to the future,” said Musk.

Remember, the Twitter Files were promoted by Musk and his supporters as a big deal. Matt Taibbi, Bari Weiss, and a few other writers hand-picked by Musk began publishing reports based on internal Twitter documents and access provided to them by Musk. These documents supposedly showed Twitter’s bias against conservatives as well as interference by the U.S. government to censor certain posts and users.
In reality, the released information showed former Twitter employees engaging in fairly even-handed, basic content moderation found on almost any social media platform. Nevertheless, Musk’s curated narrative broke through with conservatives and Musk fans. There were even Congressional hearings held based on the Twitter Files where former employees shared just how much was missing from Musk’s chosen documents.
Still though, Congressional hearings were held! Multiple Twitter Files were published. Conservative media ran with these stories again and again. These Twitter Files were a big deal according to Musk and his supporters.
and yet, Musk is now just saying it’s time to move on after saying there would be more Twitter Files. Musk even teased that he’d be releasing(Opens in a new tab) a supposed “Fauci Files” regarding Twitter and the pandemic back in January, going after former White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci. These “Fauci Files” have never been released. Neither have the Twitter Files regarding Musk-run Twitter, which Musk said he would also release for the sake of transparency.
That’s quite an uneventful ending for what many Musk supporters framed as huge, important revelations.
Where did Musk say this?
Much has been said about Elon Musk’s interview(Opens in a new tab) earlier this week with the BBC by now. It’s been covered by multiple outlets in great detail.
BBC reporter James Clayton was granted a last-minute interview with Musk late Tuesday night where the two discussed Musk’s Twitter acquisition and subsequent layoffs, misinformation, and hate speech on the website. The interview, which was filmed for BBC and streamed live on Twitter Spaces, was unfortunately not very good. Musk sidestepped questions, turning them back around against the BBC and its reporter seemed unprepared to respond to such pushback.
But, there was one very interesting nugget of information that came towards the end of the Twitter Spaces discussion. and judging by the lack of coverage, it seems like most people missed it.
After BBC ended its portion of the interview, Musk brought on some of his favorite fans, consisting of right-wing influencers and cryptocurrency accounts. One of them, Malaysia-based right-wing influencer Ian Miles Cheong, asked Musk about the future of the Twitter Files after saying he received numerous messages asking him to inquire.
Just days earlier, Musk’s relationship with Twitter Files’ lead writer Taibbi came to an end over Musk’s feud with Substack. Unhappy that Substack launched a Twitter-like feature called Substack Notes, Musk had Twitter block interactions on tweets that included Substack links. Being that Taibbi publishes the vast majority of his writing on his Substack, the two had a disagreement over the issue which led to Musk unfollowing Taibbi and Taibbi leaving Twitter.
In a statement(Opens in a new tab), Taibbi confirmed that these events would affect his Twitter Files work, as ostensibly Musk will no longer provide Taibbi with further documents or access. Since then, Taibbi has moved(Opens in a new tab) to other platforms such as Donald Trump’s Truth Social and has been working to move the Twitter Files threads he had already published on Twitter to his new homes.
So, there might be a few Twitter Files reports left to be published from before Musk’s feud with Taibbi. But, listening to Musk in that Twitter Space, he didn’t seem too excited about them. and again, according to Musk, it’s time to “move on” from the Twitter Files anyway.
