A VHS Tape of Rocky Just Sold for $27500 Because Why Not
A VHS Tape of ‘Rocky’ Just Sold for $27,500, Because Why Not https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/a-vhs-tape-of-rocky-just-sold-for-27500-because-why-not/
Just about everyone has somewhere special they went when young, a place that glows in memory. For some it may be a library or game arcade, for others a baseball field or bookstore. For Jay Carlson, growing up in western Massachusetts in the early 1990s, the center of the universe was the video rental store.
This was before streaming, before Netflix, before DVDs. The videocassette player was the summit of consumer technology. At the rental shop, 12-year-old Jay would bump into friends and neighbors, hear about something that couldn’t be missed, talk up his own favorites. It was like social media before social media was invented.
He grew up, got married, had children, went to work in the finance department of a retailer. Technology moved on, but his heart did not. One day, he saw in his local comics store a tape of “Ghostbusters,” the first movie his parents let him pick out himself. It was $7, still sealed from the factory.
“I said to my wife, ‘I think I might start collecting tapes,’” Mr. Carlson, 43, said. “I was taking a piece of my childhood back.”
Many others are, too. The stock market, real estate and cryptocurrencies did poorly in 2022, but the global luxury goods market grew 20 percent. People may have had less, but they spent more on fine arts and collectibles that serve no function except to provide pleasure.
The culture is bursting with new material — every day, thousands of new books are published and 100,000 new songs are released on Spotify — but the old stuff offers a sweeter emotional payoff for many. It could be tapes or posters or pictures or comics or coins or sports cards or memorabilia. It might be from their childhood or the childhood they never had, or it might merely express a longing to be anywhere but 2023.
The common element is this: People like to own a thing from a thing they love. For Mr. Carlson and millions like him, the nostalgia factory is working overtime.
When Mr. Carlson first began to look for sealed VHS cassettes, they were considered so much plastic trash. “Back to the Future,” “The Goonies,” “Blade Runner,” were about $20 each on eBay. He put them on a shelf, little windows into his past, and started an Instagram account called Rare and Sealed.
Then tapes began to get scarcer and much more expensive. People trapped at home had lots of money to spend during the pandemic. But it was more than that.
Objects with a bit of history have an obvious attraction in a high-tech world. The current cultural tumult, with its boom in fake images, endless arguments over everything and now the debut of imperious A.I. chatbots, increases the appeal of things that can’t be plugged in.
At the same time, advances in technology mean it is ever easier to buy expensive things online. Bids at auctions routinely reach tens, even hundreds, of thousands of dollars.
One thing people are eagerly seeking with the new technology is old technology. Cormac McCarthy’s typewriter, which he used to write a shelf of important novels, went for a quarter-million dollars. An Apple 1 computer fetched nearly twice that. A first-generation iPhone, still sealed in its box, sold for $21,000 in December and triple that in February.
Blend these factors — a desire for escape from our virtual lives; bidding as fast as pushing a button; and the promotion of new collecting fields like outdated technology devices — and you have Heritage Auctions in Dallas.
Heritage is a whirlwind of activity, of passion, of hype, constantly trying new ways of enticing people to own something beautiful and useless. Ninety-one million Americans, according to U.S. Census Bureau surveys, are having trouble paying household bills. Everyone else is a potential bidder.
“There was a point in time when art and collectibles were dominated by old white men,” said Josh Benesh, Heritage’s chief strategy officer. “I think that has been democratized. and the categories of material for sale have been democratized a lot.”
Twenty years ago, Heritage had four categories: coins, comics, movie posters and sports. Now it has more than 50, which generated revenue of $1.4 billion last year. Everything, at least in theory, is collectible.
“We don’t question the value or legitimacy of a particular subject matter relative to outmoded norms,” Mr. Benesh said. “We’re not here to tell you what’s worthwhile. The marketplace will tell you. The bidders” — Heritage has 1.6 million — “will tell you.”
VHS tapes were apparently worthwhile. The selection of an expert to run the sales was easy: Mr. Carlson. His first auction, in June 2022, brought in more than a half-million dollars.
The publicity around the sale brought Mr. Carlson, whose email address is on the Heritage website, many offers of tapes. One man said he had put together a time capsule for his son, who was born on Christmas Day 1982. “Rocky III” had just come out, so the father included a brand-new copy. He threw in “Rocky I” and “Rocky II” as well. They’d cost $60 each.
The three tapes, all with a factory seal, fetched $53,750 in a February auction.
Since cassettes were designed to be played, only a few unopened ones exist 40 years later. But since they were never considered valuable, they might be found anywhere for a pittance.
“A man told us he found a sealed first release of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ at Goodwill,” Mr. Carlson said. “He paid a quarter. That will probably go for $20,000.”
Every potential bidder must decide if this is the 2023 equivalent of Beanie Babies, which flew high and then crashed. Mr. Carlson would not be working at Heritage if he didn’t believe.
“These tapes are historical artifacts that have this ability to sweep you back in time to a place that all at once feels miles away and yet somehow like home,” he said. “I used to think it was just me, but I talk to more and more people getting into this because of that pull.”
The pull of nostalgia is powerful indeed. But the pull of quick cash can be more powerful still. There were 235 lots in February’s tape auction, and they all sold.
For those who missed out, dozens of the lots are now highlighted on Heritage’s website to suggest the owner might be willing to flip his newly acquired copy of “Caddyshack” for a 50 percent premium.
At Heritage, the bidding never really ends.
Wanted Dead or Alive
The Heritage offices look like a cross between an Amazon warehouse and a very wide-ranging museum, with a dash of “Hoarders” thrown in.
In mid-2020, the privately held company moved to a 160,000-square-foot building by Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, doubling the size of its former headquarters. Hundreds of specialists, most of them collectors themselves, prepare hundreds of thousands of items for bids here — researching, photographing, writing catalog copy.
There are boxes of Teenage Mutant Turtles Killer Bee toys. A CBS television camera that filmed the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald. A poster from the McKinley campaign in 1896. Lots of Pokémon. Fake newspapers from the HBO series “Watchmen.” Lots and lots of comic books. A videocassette of the horror flick “Death Spa.” Sneakers. Trading cards.
Stuff overwhelms desks; objects are piled to the ceilings in storage rooms; racks are full of items that have been bought and must be shipped.
The spiritual roots of Heritage, which calls itself “America’s auction house,” go back to the most primitive type of collector, the souvenir hunter. Anything not nailed down in America, along with quite a bit that is, becomes prey. Traveling through Missouri in 1882, Oscar Wilde noticed a crowd pulling down a little yellow house.
“It is the house of the great train-robber and murderer, Jesse James, who was shot by his pal last week, and the people are relic hunters,” the playwright reported. “They sold his dustbin and foot-scraper yesterday at public auction, his door-knocker is to be offered for sale this afternoon, the reserve price being about the income of an English bishop.”
Wilde added that Americans “are great hero-worshippers, and always take their heroes from the criminal classes.” That’s as true as ever. A few months ago, Heritage sold the outlaw’s pocket revolver for $62,500.
The problem is, older historical items that were previously unknown are becoming rare. Every barn, basement and attic has been ransacked for treasures. New items related to Washington or Lincoln, for instance, are nearly impossible to find.
“All the varieties of Lincoln inaugural buttons seem to be known,” said Curtis Lindner, Heritage’s director of Americana. “There has not been a new photo of Lincoln in many years. We get a lot of people saying, ‘I have a new image.’ Unfortunately, not everyone who has a beard is Abraham Lincoln.”
So the pressure is on to develop new material. For instance, Vegas casino chips. “People have emotional ties to Vegas,” said Ray Farina, who moved over from Americana to develop this niche. “Maybe they saw Elvis there back in the day.”
A 1953 chip from the fabled Sands casino sold for $12,000 at Heritage in December. Now people with chips are contacting Heritage. A guy says his father worked for the casinos taking the decommissioned chips out to the desert to bury them in concrete. Apparently, he kept some.
“Word gets out,” Mr. Farina said. “We have tremendous marketing ability here.”
The pace of Heritage’s auctions is relentless — there were 1,034 in 2022, almost three a day, with a total of 412,270 lots — and so are the Heritage emails promoting them.
Even so, revenue barely inched up in 2022 after growing 60 percent in 2021. The number of registered bidders rose, but only by a small fraction. There may be a limit to what marketing can do.
Looking for a Sure Thing
Sitting in his office on a rainy Monday morning, Chris Ivy, the director of sports auctions at Heritage, is a bit distracted. That’s because he i...

Is Substack Notes a Twitter clone? We asked CEO Chris Best.
Is Substack Notes a ‘Twitter clone’? We asked CEO Chris Best. https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/is-substack-notes-a-twitter-clone-we-asked-ceo-chris-best/
It is fair to say that Substack has had a dramatic week and a half or so, and I talked to their CEO Chris Best about it. The company announced a new feature called Substack Notes, which looks quite a bit like Twitter — Substack authors can post short bits of text to share links and kick off discussions, and people can reply to them, like the posts, the whole thing. Like I said, Twitter.
Twitter, under the direction of Elon Musk, did not like the prospect of this competition, and for several days last week, Twitter was taking aggressive actions against Substack. At one point you couldn’t even like tweets with Substack links in them. At another point, clicking on a Substack link resulted in a warning message about the platform being unsafe. and finally, Twitter redirected all searches for the word Substack to “newsletter.” Musk claimed Substack was somehow downloading the Twitter database to bootstrap Substack Notes, which, well, I’m still not sure what that means, but I at least asked Chris what he thought that meant and whether he was doing it.
It’s tempting to think of Substack like a rival platform to Twitter, but until the arrival of Substack Notes, it was much more like enterprise software. With Substack Notes, the company is in direct competition with social networks like Twitter. It’s shipping a consumer product that’s designed to be used by Substack readers. It is no longer just a software vendor; it’s a consumer product company. and that carries with it another set of content moderation concerns, that, after talking to Chris, I’m just not sure Substack is ready for. Like, I really don’t know. You’ll just have to listen to his answers — or really, non-answers — for yourself.
This is a wild one. I’m still processing it. Let me know what you think. Okay, Chris Best, CEO of Substack. Here we go.
This excerpt has been lightly edited for clarity. The full transcript will be available shortly.
Was it meant to compete with Twitter?
What was it meant to do besides post recommendations? Because it feels like you want writers putting more content in the app so people use the app more, which I totally understand. Again, that’s our motivation for our product and our site [The Verge]: we want our writers to participate more, be more present, build more audience, build more community.
I think that the incentive structure of the social media business model pulls in a certain direction. It pulls in this direction of being maximally cheaply compelling, maximally addictive, and trying to get you to spend more and more of your time there, regardless of how much you value it. and I basically think that the truest instantiation of that today is TikTok. and I think that every company that has this business model is going to get pulled in the direction of getting closer and closer to TikTok and then whatever comes beyond TikTok. TikTok but everything’s AI, or TikTok plugs into your brain, or whatever it is. I don’t know.
There’s some gravitational pull that’s pulling every platform that works that way to be that way whether they want to or not. and I think that opens up an opportunity for something that is in opposition to that that works a totally different way. That says, “Hey, over here, you are the customer. You are going to subscribe directly to things you care about. The job of this app, of this inbox, of this feed is not to keep you here at all costs. It’s to find you things that you value so much that you might want to pay for them.”
and so, my mental model of this is basically that everybody’s going to either have to turn into TikTok or turn into Substack. We are already Substack. In the broad sense, that creates an alternative to the attention economy. Substack, as a whole, is an alternative to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, and over time, we think this alternative model will grow. But it’s just obviously not the case that we’re going to release one feature and everybody from some other thing is going to jump over. It doesn’t work that way.
Just to be clear, the users of Notes are expecting that. Just browsing Notes for the past couple days since I’ve had access to it, there’s a lot of hope that everyone will just move over from Twitter. Obviously, there’s some Twitter-related drama that we should get into very directly. But right now, looking at the users of Notes, who are a bunch of Substackers, they’re saying, “Hey, this feels like early Twitter. I hope we can keep this going and this replaces Twitter.” Do you think that’s a fair or appropriate expectation?
Listen to Decoder, a show hosted by The Verge’s Nilay Patel about big ideas — and other problems. Subscribe here!
I’ve seen the meme that you’re talking about. That’s not the story that we’re telling, and that’s not the way that we believe it’s going to work. We don’t think that anything is going to be the new Twitter. and we think, even if that were possible, that’s not what we’re trying to do. We’re not trying to build the same thing.
I can understand how people, especially writers who really want to have a reliable platform for their work, a reliable place to share, could be feeling the heat and looking for alternatives. I think that simplistic understanding just doesn’t hold water.
Let’s talk about that part of it for just a quick second. The last time we talked, you said that you were keeping track of various writers’ Twitter followers as you were considering recruiting them to Substack, and there have been a lot of different deals that recruit writers to Substack. But the idea that people with a lot of Twitter followers were attractive targets to recruit to Substack came through loud and clear.
I have certainly heard from a lot of people in Substack over the past two years that their primary source of conversions to paid is Twitter. Twitter is their best marketing engine. Substack maybe monetized Twitter better than Twitter ever monetized itself. This has been a real relationship that we’ve seen play out. and now, Twitter’s going through whatever it’s going through. I think there is a lot of fear from that community that their single best top-of-funnel network is going away or will be inhospitable to them in some meaningful way.
and Notes might be the replacement, or Mastodon might be the replacement, but it’s certainly not going to be TikTok, and it probably isn’t search. Are you thinking, “Okay, we’ve got to build something that looks like the top of the funnel for Substack writers”?
I think the right way to think about this is we’re trying to build ways in Substack where you can use the power of the Substack network to grow, to reach new audiences, to have a place, in a Substack-y way. An example of this is the recommendation feature we launched, where writers can recommend each other. Therefore, readers can discover new things they might like, not through a machine that’s just predicting what you’ll click on but somebody that they’ve chosen to trust saying, “Hey, this is worth checking out.”
We’re extending that ethos into how Notes works. It’s just a way that you can recommend even more things. and at the same time, we want people publishing on Substack to be able to publish everywhere. We want people to also share on Twitter. We want them to also share in TikTok, also share everywhere. We think writers should have the power to share their work broadly everywhere that it can go. We think that’s good.

Spotify introduces an iPhone Lock Screen widget for easy access to its app
Spotify introduces an iPhone Lock Screen widget for easy access to its app https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/spotify-introduces-an-iphone-lock-screen-widget-for-easy-access-to-its-app/
Spotify is embracing the iOS Lock Screen. The company announced today it’s introducing a new iPhone Lock Screen widget to all users running iOS 16 or later that allows you to tap on Spotify’s icon to launch the app directly before unlocking your phone.
Support for Lock Screen widgets rolled out with iOS 16’s release last fall as a way to put glanceable information directly on the phone’s screen as either round or rectangular widgets below the date and time or as a line of text just above it. A number of developers both large and small were quick to jump on board with Lock Screen widgets, including major tech companies like Google (including YouTube), Facebook, Snap and others. But Spotify had not.
While largely meant as another way to connect people with information from their apps, some Lock Screen widgets can also be used as shortcuts that launch apps directly. That provides quicker and easier access to the apps you use the most. For example, one of Google’s widgets lets you kick off a search right from the iPhone’s Lock Screen.
In Spotify’s case, the app will simply open the Spotify app — saving you the time of unlocking your phone and then finding the app icon or widget and tapping it. This can be useful when you want to jump into your music or podcasts while on the go or in the car and don’t have time to swipe through apps and screens.
Before, users who wanted Spotify on their Lock Screen had been taking advantage of third-party widget customization apps, like Widgetsmith, to create their own widgets.

To add Spotify’s new widget, you press and hold your finger down on your Lock Screen to make the “Customize” button appear at the bottom. Tap this to be taken to the area where you can choose to add widgets and look for Spotify in the alphabetical list. You can then tap on Spotify or drag the widget to add it to the Lock Screen and exit the customization screens.
In addition to the new Lock Screen widget, the company supports other widgets including two sizes of Home Screen widgets for easy access to your most recently played music and podcasts. It also supports Apple’s Live Activities, which puts music controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen when you’re actively using the app.
Spotify notes that you’ll need to update its iOS app to the latest release to gain access to its new Lock Screen widget feature. Users must be on iOS 16 or later to use these types of widgets, as well.

NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube: Choose your plan wisely
NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube: Choose your plan wisely https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/nfl-sunday-ticket-on-youtube-choose-your-plan-wisely/
YouTube has finally announced pricing for NFL Sunday Ticket, but it doesn’t want you to wait until fall to sign up.
Until June 6, the company is offering $100 off the first season of Sunday Ticket. That brings the first-year price to a still-steep $249 when bundled with YouTube TV, or an even-steeper $349 on a standalone basis through regular YouTube. Adding NFL RedZone to either plan costs an extra $40 for the season.
Because Sunday Ticket only covers out-of-market games, YouTube’s bifurcated packages are likely to cause some confusion and heartache once football season starts. Before you jump in with the presale, pay close attention to what you’re paying for.
Don’t miss TechHive’s coverage of the best live TV streaming services.
How does NFL Sunday Ticket work on YouTube?
First, let’s clarify the difference between YouTube TV and plain old YouTube:
YouTube is the service best-known for its millions of free, ad-supported videos. Among other things, it also offers a marketplace called “Primetime Channels” for subscription video services, one of which will be NFL Sunday Ticket.
YouTube TV is a separate service that’s basically a replacement for cable TV. For $73 per month, it offers a big bundle of pay TV channels along with an array of optional add-ons, one of which will be NFL Sunday Ticket.
Primetime Channels is a way to subscribe to video services from inside the regular YouTube app.
Jared Newman / Foundry
DirecTV will no longer sell Sunday Ticket in 2023, so these will be your only options for out-of-market NFL games for the next seven years. With that in mind, YouTube’s regular pricing for Sunday Ticket is as follows:
YouTube Primetime Channels: $449 for the season, or $489 with NFL RedZone.
YouTube TV: $349 for the season, or $389 with NFL RedZone; plus, $73 per month for YouTube TV itself.
Signing up by June 6 will save you $100 on any of the above packages, but only for the first year. and if you go with YouTube Primetime Channels, Sunday Ticket will auto-renew at the regular price unless you cancel beforehand. (The best time to do so is right after signing up.)
In both cases, the core NFL Sunday Ticket offering is the same: You’ll get live access to out-of-market games, along with a “multiview” feature for watching up to four games at a time. The difference with YouTube TV is that you’ll also get a full pay TV package to go with it.
YouTube TV is a cable replacement service with features like a grid guide and DVR.
Jared Newman / Foundry
Meanwhile, the NFL RedZone add-on will provide whiparound coverage of early and late afternoon games. YouTube TV’s $11-per-month Sports Plus add-on also offers NFL RedZone without the need for Sunday Ticket, but no standalone RedZone option exists for YouTube Primetime Channels subscribers.
Does NFL Sunday Ticket include all NFL games?
Once more, with feeling: NFL Sunday Ticket does not include local or nationally broadcast NFL games. With the NFL RedZone add-on, you might occasionally see local action through that channel’s whiparound coverage. Coverage is otherwise limited to out-of-market games on Sunday afternoons only.
That means if you subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket through regular YouTube, you’ll need to look elsewhere for local games, Sunday Night Football on NBC, Monday Night Football on ESPN, Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime, and the entirety of the NFL playoffs. If your TV has an onboard tuner, you might consider buying an over-the-air antenna to bring in local TV broadcasts. Take a look at TechHive’s coverage of the best TV antennas.
But by now, you should see the potential for chaos: With YouTube taking pre-orders, some folks will sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket on a standalone basis only to realize come football season that it doesn’t entitle them to complete NFL coverage. At that point, it’ll be too late to switch over to the YouTube TV version that costs $100 less (plus the price of YouTube TV, of course).
Conversely, YouTube TV’s version of NFL Sunday Ticket requires an active YouTube TV subscription to access. If you sign up this way, and then decide to try a different live TV service—or cancel your TV bundle entirely—you’ll lose access to the NFL Sunday Ticket subscription you already paid for.
Hence the need for foresight when choosing one of these plans. Bundling NFL Sunday Ticket with YouTube TV makes sense for those who are committed to the latter for at least the next nine months. If you want flexibility, it’ll cost you an extra $100.
Why NFL is Sunday Ticket so expensive now?
While YouTube’s Sunday Ticket price is a lot higher than the $294 that DirecTV charged, its reported $2-billion-per-year price tag for the rights is also $500 million more than what DirecTV paid in its final years. All this comes as the tech and streaming industries focus more on profits than growth, so the largesse you might’ve expected from a company like Google is no longer on display here.
Whether it’ll pay off for Google is another matter. With NFL Sunday Ticket, Google is betting it can use bundle discounts to prop up its pay TV package. Even so, the trend in cord-cutting is away from these big bundles and toward cheaper streaming options.
NFL Sunday Ticket was a boon for DirecTV in the satellite service’s early days, but it eventually became an albatross, costing corporate parent AT&T $800 million per year by one estimate. YouTube has indicated it will experiment more with pricing and packaging down the road, perhaps to avoid a similar fate. For now, its motivations look a lot like those of the TV provider it’s replacing.

When Your Boss Is an App https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/when-your-boss-is-an-app/
It’s hard not to be apprehensive of the ways in which the least pleasant innovations of the gig economy, and the technology that enables them, could seep into ever more industries and jobs — a future in which the “Uberization of everything” doesn’t mean eliminating regular employment, just forcing it to operate in increasingly giglike ways. David Weil — who served in the Labor Department under President Obama and later as dean of the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University — sees the expansion of gig working as part of a larger story, one he calls “fissuring.” When corporations started offshoring manufacturing in the mid-20th century, he says, they did so in part to access cheaper labor in other countries. Soon they found ways to do something similar at home, contracting out for roles that would, in the past, have belonged to their own pool of workers. The janitors at a tech company like Apple, for example, might once have been direct employees, entitled to benefits similar to those of their peers. Now they can be employed by a cleaning service with its own labor policies — severing, or at least loosening, the legal ties between them and the company whose offices they will clean.
Weil considers companies like Uber and Lyft to be “hyper-fissured.” They minimize labor costs by categorizing all their drivers as independent — people with, in theory, other jobs and other access to benefits — and casting themselves as mere management systems that allow those workers to operate. Given their power over nearly every aspect of that work, though, many see these brands not as systems of management but of employment. “So much of the platform world, they want to have things two ways at the same time,” Weil says. “They want as much control as they possibly can of the product and the service — whatever the targets are related to product innovation, service and delivery — but they don’t want the messy problems of being an employer.”
The depth of this particular fissure — the obvious way these platforms maximize control over workers while minimizing obligations to them — has sparked multiple battles over how the law should categorize laborers. In courts and in legislatures, workers and labor advocates have butted against tech companies and business interests. The latter have scored plenty of wins. In 34 states, legislation has already been adopted that specifically exempts “Transportation Network Companies” (TNCs) from some state and local labor standards. The gig-working platform Handy, which has since been purchased by Angi Inc., has backed legislation that would ensure those who found jobs on apps or platforms could more easily be considered independent workers; 10 states now have such “marketplace platform” laws on the books. and a growing, well-funded lobby for platform work, the Coalition for Workforce Innovation, has argued for a third labor classification, beyond employees and independent contractors. This category would be created simply by having workers sign a contract called a “Worker Flexibility Agreement,” in which they trade away protections like a minimum wage for the ability to take outside work — thus giving platforms, the argument goes, freedom to offer piecemeal selections of perks and benefits to entice labor.
The strongest alternative to all of this is a standard called the “ABC test,” which gained notoriety during a class-action suit against a California courier and delivery service called Dynamex Operations West. In 2004, Dynamex converted all of its drivers from full-time employees to independent contractors. After much litigation, the California Supreme Court ultimately relied on the ABC test — which sets a high bar for considering workers independent — to uphold a lower-court verdict for the plaintiffs, sparking a flurry of political action. The State Legislature passed a measure codifying the ABC test into law. In reaction, TNCs including Uber, Lyft and Instacart pushed for a state ballot measure, Proposition 22, that would place their drivers in a category of worker entitled to only limited benefits. The proposition passed in 2020, but has been hindered by legal challenges. Versions of this battle have occurred in states across the country, and even nationally. The House of Representatives has twice passed the PRO Act, a law focused on union organizing that also adopts the ABC test at a federal level; both times, in 2019 and 2021, it languished in the Senate. It was introduced a third time this February.
At the same time, the sheer variety of gig-working arrangements has continued to expand, outpacing the speed of most moves to regulate or define it. Many of the newest platforms in the field actually bill themselves as attempts to bridge the gap between flexibility and security — using the tools of gig work to solve the problems of gig work. Yong Kim, the founder of a platform called Wonolo, told me his hope is to build a new model for protecting workers. Kim came to the United States from South Korea as a teenager and has memories of walking into stores with help-wanted signs, only to be turned away — “I couldn’t get a job at a gas station,” he told me, “because of the way I looked and the way I spoke.” His platform connects workers with businesses in need of on-demand staffing. “Most of the gig-economy-based platforms, they are connecting workers with consumers,” he says. “If someone needs food delivered to their house, they use it. In our case, one side is actually businesses. There are companies like Hello Fresh and Coca-Cola that also have to think about the well-being of the workers. Can we design it in a new way and innovate around that?”

Congressional Republicans subpoena the FTC for asking Twitter too many questions
Congressional Republicans subpoena the FTC for asking Twitter too many questions https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/congressional-republicans-subpoena-the-ftc-for-asking-twitter-too-many-questions/
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), chair of the committee, authorized the subpoena sent to FTC Chair Lina Khan, accusing the agency of refusing to comply with a handful of other requests the committee has made over the last few months. The demand requires the FTC to hand over all internal communications related to Musk’s October 2022 purchase of Twitter.
In his letter to Khan Wednesday, Jordan accused the FTC of making “inappropriate and burdensome demands” of Musk’s Twitter, calling the agency’s responses to past requests for information “woefully insufficient.”
Shortly after Musk purchased Twitter last year, the FTC said it was monitoring the platform’s abilities to protect the security of users’ information. In a recent report, Jordan’s committee found that the FTC had sent at least a dozen demand letters to the company since Musk took over.
“The FTC respects the important role of Congressional oversight. We have made multiple offers to brief Chairman Jordan’s staff on our investigation into Twitter. Those are standing offers made prior to this entirely unnecessary subpoena,” FTC spokesman Douglas Farrar said in a statement to The Verge Wednesday.
The FTC’s investigation is reportedly centered around the platform’s abilities to uphold data security promises it made to the agency more than 10 years ago. In 2011, Twitter reached an agreement with the FTC to settle charges that the company had mishandled user data, ultimately allowing hackers unauthorized access to user accounts. As part of that agreement, Twitter was required to create “a comprehensive privacy and information security program” to protect users.

The company said that emerging artists working with UnitedMasters will be eligible for grants through the Sounds Creator Fund. Snap started this program last year in partnership with DistroKit to award up to $100,000 per month (or $5,000 to 20 songs per month to upcoming musicians.)
This grant also provides creative support to artists in establishing “relevancy” with the audience. Snap includes popular licensed songs in Sounds playlists so people can use them in the video clips on the platform. With the inclusion of new artists through this label deal, there will be more competition to get into those 20 spots.
Snap first debuted the Sounds product in 2020 in response to TikTok becoming a hotbed for music discovery. Over the years, the company has inked deals with multiple labels including Warner Music Group, Merlin (including their independent label members), NMPA, Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner Chappell Music, Kobalt BMG Music Publishing, and Universal Music Group. Additionally, it has content from over 9,000 independent music publishers and labels in its library.
Earlier this year, YouTube made a new music licensing tool called Creator Music available to all YouTube Partnership Program participants in the U.S.

Where did Wordle come from?
Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle(Opens in a new tab) rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans have even sprung up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once.
Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

What weve learned about Sony PlayStations new smartphone games team
What we’ve learned about Sony PlayStation’s new smartphone games team https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/what-weve-learned-about-sony-playstations-new-smartphone-games-team/
Sony wants 20 percent of new games to be on smartphones by 2025, and last August it announced a new PlayStation Studios Mobile Division to help make that happen. But you should know that what Sony’s building doesn’t look like a new game studio that will produce its own games, nor, say, a way to port Sony’s biggest games to phones the way they’re getting ported to PC.
17 current and former job postings suggest that PlayStation Studios Mobile is more of a cross-functional management, strategy, licensing, and support team.
They figure what PlayStation intellectual property would best fit a mobile phone, help dish out that licensed IP to internal and external game studios alike, oversee the titles, make sure the final games live up to Sony’s expectations — and maybe invest or even acquire external developers if there’s strategic value in it.
Here’s the description for a Senior External Producer role, for example:
Be an ambassador for PlayStation, collaborating with top mobile game developers in evaluating, producing and releasing PlayStation Studios Mobile games at the highest level of quality, on time and on budget.
and many roles ask prospective employees to have a “proven track record” with free-to-play games specifically. I’ve only seen one game designer role so far, and its primary responsibility is: “Support game design for internal projects and provide consultation for projects with external partners on mobile F2P systems, economy management and retention features.”
Tried and true, at least for console
Leaning on external studios wouldn’t be surprising: it’s a formula that’s worked for Sony in the past. Many lauded first-party and third-party games have come out of Sony’s PlayStation Studios (formerly Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios), even if Sony did briefly try to pretend the brand was solely about its own first-party exclusives when the PS5 first launched.
Besides, this is the third time Sony’s tried to get smartphone gaming off the ground, following its failed PlayStation Mobile platform and its WayForward studio that’s only produced two games (Everybody’s Golf and Disgaea RPG) specifically for the Japanese market. (Sony was also preparing to bring its PlayStation Now cloud gaming service to phones, I discovered in 2021, but let’s not count that since Sony never announced it.)
Some of the postings describe the group as a “small but quickly growing team” where employees will “wear many hats and contribute to the nascent culture for mobile game design at PlayStation Studios while championing the efforts across the company.”
The job postings do make it seem like there’s real interest in tapping Sony’s internal studios to produce the games, too, should those efforts be championed successfully. The company’s head of mobile product describes his job as including both externally and internally developed titles:
Responsible for delivery of PlayStation Studios quality mobile titles, including internally developed within existing & acquired studios and externally developed via licensing, co-development and co-publishing partnerships.
Most current roles are for product managers and external producers in San Mateo and Amsterdam; the company’s also hiring a Director of Mobile Engineering and a product strategy analyst. Previously, Sony also went looking for a finance manager, directors of mobile product management, business development and studio operations, and a Korean translator in Amsterdam.
According to their LinkedIn pages, Sony’s hires currently appear to include:
Nicola Sebastiani as head of mobile; she formerly was head of content for Apple Arcade
Olivier Courtemanche as head of mobile product; he was formerly director of product for Zynga and briefly head of content for Meta’s Horizon. Amusingly, Sony appears to have built the role specifically for him:
Hope nobody else applied for this job! Screenshot by Sean Hollister / The Verge
Kris Davis as head of mobile business development; he spent seven years doing that job for Kabam
Uyen Uyen Ton Nu as head of mobile marketing; she spent eight years doing that for Super Evil Megacorp (that studio, by the way, is working on a project for Netflix’s mobile games lineup)
Justin Kubiak in licensing; he was former VP of mobile publishing at NCSoft and previously head of games partnerships for Samsung
We’re definitely eager to see what they come up with. Sony has previously said that Savage Game Studios, the first group that PlayStation acquired to produce mobile games, already has “a new unannounced AAA mobile live service action game” in the works. Their job postings show they’re looking for experience with the Unreal Engine.
Nintendo also recently stood up a new company with partner DeNA (co-developer of Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, etc) to potentially produce more mobile games. and like Sony, Netflix also leans on external partners for its own mobile titles, though it’s also taken the Apple Arcade strategy of bundling games you previously had to buy into its paid subscription.

Italy gives OpenAI initial to-do list for lifting ChatGPT suspension order
Italy gives OpenAI initial to-do list for lifting ChatGPT suspension order https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/italy-gives-openai-initial-to-do-list-for-lifting-chatgpt-suspension-order/
Italy’s data protection watchdog has laid out what OpenAI needs to do for it to lift an order against ChatGPT issued at the end of last month — when it said it suspected the AI chatbot service was in breach of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and ordered the U.S.-based company to stop processing locals’ data.
The EU’s GDPR applies whenever personal data is processed, and there’s no doubt large language models such as OpenAI’s GPT have hoovered up vast amounts of the stuff off the public internet in order to train their generative AI models to be able to respond in a human-like way to natural language prompts.
OpenAI responded to the Italian data protection authority’s order by swiftly geoblocking access to ChatGPT. In a brief public statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also tweeted confirmation it had ceased offering the service in Italy — doing so alongside the usual Big tech boilerplate caveat that it “think[s] we are following all privacy laws.”
Italy’s Garante evidently takes a different view.
The short version of the regulator’s new compliance demand is this: OpenAI will have to get transparent and publish an information notice detailing its data processing; it must immediately adopt age gating to prevent minors from accessing the tech and move to more robust age verification measures; it needs to clarify the legal basis it’s claiming for processing people’s data for training its AI (and cannot rely on performance of a contract — meaning it has to choose between consent or legitimate interests); it also has to provide ways for users (and non-users) to exercise rights over their personal data, including asking for corrections of disinformation generated about them by ChatGPT (or else have their data deleted); it must also provide users with an ability to object to OpenAI’s processing of their data for training its algorithms; and it must conduct a local awareness campaign to inform Italians that its processing their information to train its AIs.
The DPA has given OpenAI a deadline — of April 30 — to get most of that done. (The local radio, TV and internet awareness campaign has a slightly more generous timeline of May 15 to be actioned.)
There’s also a little more time for the additional requirement to migrate from the immediately required (but weak) age gating child safety tech to a harder-to-circumvent age verification system. OpenAI has been given until May 31 to submit a plan for implementing age verification tech to filter out users below age 13 (and users aged 13 to 18 who had not obtained parental consent) — with the deadline for having that more robust system in place set at September 30.
In a press release detailing what OpenAI must do in order for it to lift the temporary suspension on ChatGPT, ordered two weeks ago when the regulator announced it was commencing a formal investigation of suspected GDPR breaches, it writes:
OpenAI will have to comply by 30 April with the measures set out by the Italian SA [supervisory authority] concerning transparency, the right of data subjects — including users and non-users — and the legal basis of the processing for algorithmic training relying on users’ data. Only in that case will the Italian SA lift its order that placed a temporary limitation on the processing of Italian users’ data, there being no longer the urgency underpinning the order, so that ChatGPT will be available once again from Italy.
Going into more detail on each of the required “concrete measures,” the DPA stipulates that the mandated information notice must describe “the arrangements and logic of the data processing required for the operation of ChatGPT along with the rights afforded to data subjects (users and non-users),” adding that it “will have to be easily accessible and placed in such a way as to be read before signing up to the service.”
Users from Italy must be presented with this notice prior to signing up and also confirm they are over 18, it further requires. While users who registered prior to the DPA’s stop-data-processing order will have to be shown the notice when they access the reactivated service and must also be pushed through an age gate to filter out underage users.
On the legal basis issue attached to OpenAI’s processing of people’s data for training it’s algorithms, the Garante has narrowed the available options down to two: consent or legitimate interests — stipulating that it must immediately remove all references to performance of a contract “in line with the [GDPR’s] accountability principle.” (OpenAI’s privacy policy currently cites all three grounds but appears to lean most heavily on performance of a contract for providing services like ChatGPT.)
“This will be without prejudice to the exercise the SA’s investigation and enforcement powers in this respect,” it adds, confirming it is withholding judgment on whether the two remaining grounds can be used lawfully for OpenAI’s purposes too.
Additionally, the GDPR provides data subjects with a suite of access rights, including a right to corrections or deletion of their personal data. Which is why the Italian regulator has also demanded that OpenAI implements tools so that data subjects — which means both users and non-users — can exercise their rights and get falsities the chatbot generates about them rectified. Or, if correcting AI-generated lies about named individuals is found to be “technically unfeasible,” the DPA stipulates the company must provide a way for their personal data to be deleted.
“OpenAI will have to make available easily accessible tools to allow non-users to exercise their right to object to the processing of their personal data as relied upon for the operation of the algorithms. The same right will have to be afforded to users if legitimate interest is chosen as the legal basis for processing their data,” it adds, referring to another of the rights GDPR affords data subjects when legitimate interest is relied upon as the legal basis for processing personal data.
All of the measures the Garante has announced are contingencies, based on its preliminary concerns. and its press release notes that its formal inquiries — “to establish possible infringements of the legislation” — carry on and could lead to it deciding to take “additional or different measures if this proves necessary upon completion of the fact-finding exercise under way.”
We reached out to OpenAI for a response but the company had not replied to our email at press time.

Montanas Plan to Bank TikTok Is a Preview for the Rest of the Country
Montana’s Plan to Bank TikTok Is a Preview for the Rest of the Country https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/montanas-plan-to-bank-tiktok-is-a-preview-for-the-rest-of-the-country/
Lawmakers in Washington are pushing for an outright ban of TikTok on American soil. Montana might beat them to it.
The state’s Legislature is further along than any other body in the United States to passing a ban of the popular Chinese-owned video app, which has faced scrutiny for whether it is handing sensitive data about Americans to Beijing. A Montana bill to block the app was introduced in February, and the State Senate approved it last month. The State House, where the bill has a strong chance of passing after two more votes, is scheduled to consider it on Thursday.
Along the way, the proposal has encountered obstacles. A major internet provider said it could not block TikTok in Montana, prompting lawmakers to rewrite the legislation. A trade group funded by Apple and Google, which operate the app stores that would be forbidden to carry the app, also declared that it was impossible for the companies to prevent access to TikTok in a single state.
and the lobbying has been intense. Critics of China have appeared at hearings supporting the bill. To strike back, TikTok has pushed its users to oppose the legislation by calling and emailing Montana’s Republican governor, Greg Gianforte. A spokeswoman for Mr. Gianforte said he would “carefully consider any bill the Legislature sends to his desk” and noted that he had already banned TikTok on state devices.
The fight in Montana is a preview of what the United States might confront at a national level if lawmakers or the White House tries to enact a nationwide ban of TikTok. Even if legislation disallowing the app is passed, carrying out a ban is technologically difficult and would involve companies across the digital economy.
TikTok could foment a backlash among its 150 million U.S. users. and any ban is likely to face legal challenges, with courts shooting down an attempt by President Donald J. Trump to block TikTok in 2020.
Montana’s attorney general, Austin Knudsen, whose office drafted the bill, acknowledged that enacting a state TikTok ban would be difficult.
“We’re under no illusions that this is not going to get challenged,” he said in an interview. “I think this is the next frontier in First Amendment jurisprudence that’s probably going to have to come from the U.S. Supreme Court. and I think that’s probably where this is headed.”
The proposed ban would take effect in 2024.
The moves in Montana are part of a intensifying technological cold war between the United States and China, with TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, caught in the middle.
Last month, members of Congress grilled Shou Chew, TikTok’s chief executive, for roughly five hours about whether the app could provide data to the Chinese government or be used to spread propaganda. In the last five years, U.S. officials have also cut off Chinese telecom companies from major suppliers, subsidized stateside manufacturers to compete with Asian chip makers and forced a Chinese company to sell the dating app Grindr.
Brooke Oberwetter, a spokeswoman for TikTok, said in a statement that there were “thousands of TikTok creators and users in Montana” who “deserve to have a seat at the table in any conversation that impacts them and their livelihoods.” TikTok has denied giving user data to the Chinese government.
Mr. Knudsen, a Republican, said his team had received scores of complaints from parents about TikTok content referring to drugs, suicide or pornography. As the state’s legislative session approached this year, his office began looking at the idea of fully banning the app.
The political environment is friendly to a ban. Montanans are already protective of their personal privacy, state politicians said. Then, in early February, a Chinese spy balloon passed over the state, drawing national attention and heightening concerns about Beijing’s espionage.
“Frankly, the Chinese did us a favor by floating that spy balloon over Montana when they did,” Mr. Knudsen said. After his office wrote the bill, State Senator Shelley Vance, a Republican, introduced it on Feb. 20.
The first version of the proposal, which included fines for internet service providers and app stores if they helped to distribute the app, as well as TikTok if it continued to operate in the state, drew little attention when the State Senate’s Business, Labor and Economic Affairs Committee considered it on Feb. 27.
At one point in that hearing, a lobbyist for AT&T stood up and announced that the company opposed the bill. He said it was “not workable” for internet service providers to put a TikTok ban into effect. He said AT&T was discussing a change with the bill’s sponsors that would allow the company to withdraw its opposition to the measure.
Lawmakers had removed any mention of internet providers like AT&T when the State Senate passed the legislation a week later.
By March, TikTok had hired two lobbyists in the state and was running ads featuring Montana small businesses that used TikTok. The app also started to mobilize its users.
“We need your help to stop the Montana State Legislature from taking away your right to use TikTok,” the company said in an email posted to one user’s feed. The company gave users a prewritten email they could send to Mr. Gianforte opposing the bill. It sent a similar warning to users through a notification inside its mobile app, according to another post on TikTok.
The State House’s Judiciary Committee considered the bill, which still required Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their stores, at a March 28 hearing.
App stores frequently take down products. A ban on TikTok could also stop the stores from distributing updates to the app, slowly hobbling the service for users who had already downloaded it. But at the hearing, a representative from TechNet, a trade group whose members include Apple and Google, said it would be “impossible” to restrict TikTok state by state.
Apple and Google declined to comment.
State Representative Zooey Zephyr, a Democrat, said in an interview that it was possible that TikTok users could disguise their location to maintain access to the app even after a ban, which could also be hard to enforce in border towns where internet connections may involve cellular towers in another state.
But skepticism of TikTok ran deep at the hearing. Keith Krach, a former corporate executive behind some of the Trump administration’s efforts to marginalize Chinese companies, testified that he wouldn’t let his 11-year-old twins near the app. He said it was “disguised as candy, but it’s really cocaine.”
“Would you agree with me that TikTok is the music played by the Pied Piper to steal this generation’s heart and mind?” asked Representative Neil Duram, a Republican, as Ms. Zephyr, seated next to him, burst out laughing.
“I’m unsure, a little bit, of what you’re getting at,” replied Keegan Medrano, the policy director for the Montana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which opposes the bill. A post of their exchange quickly gained 70,000 likes on TikTok. Mr. Duram followed up by asking Mr. Medrano if he would agree that “this generation” was, through TikTok, choosing the Chinese Communist Party “as their new god.”
Mr. Medrano said in an interview that the bill could have an impact on speech, possibly making it more difficult for people to discuss topics like “alternative views on vaccines” or “revolutionary moments in other countries.”
Mr. Knudsen said that the bill was about “an enemy superpower nation collecting personal information from Montanans” and that he was prepared for a legal fight.
“I think these are all questions that probably need the courts to step in here,” he said. “We didn’t just crack off this legislation willy-nilly without any thought to that.”

Yellowjackets connects Seasons 1 and 2 with Beaches
‘Yellowjackets’ connects Seasons 1 and 2 with ‘Beaches’ https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/yellowjackets-connects-seasons-1-and-2-with-beaches/
You’ve got to laugh a little, cry a little, until the ritualistic cannibalism rolls by a little. That’s the story of, that’s the glory of Yellowjackets.
In case you missed it, Yellowjackets Seasons 1 and 2 are connected by one of cinema’s most iconic stories of love and long friendship, with several references to the eternally tearjerking movie Beaches.
Starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as lifelong friends CC Bloom and Hillary Whitney, Beaches was released in 1988, eight years before the Yellowjackets’ plane crashed in the wilderness in 1996. A tale of complicated best friendship over a lifetime, the film sees several parallels with Yellowjackets: from Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) and Jackie’s (Ella Purnell) deeply competitive relationship to Misty (Samantha Hanratty) and Crystal’s (Nuha Jes Izman) emerging bond as social outcasts. But Yellowjackets also includes direct references to the Beaches script and soundtrack, so let’s dive in.
Yellowjackets Season 1 references Beaches in the finale.

Like Shauna and Jackie in Season 1, CC and Hillary navigate their friendship through a complicated love triangle; theirs is with CC’s show business boss, John. Hillary and John sleep together, causing a rift between the two friends, though John later marries CC — sounds familiar, huh, Jeff? Later in life, Hillary finds herself unexpectedly pregnant by her cheating husband, and CC springs to support her, just as Jackie does with Shauna’s pregnancy, albeit before she finds out the truth.

‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2 opens with the perfect song
However, the biggest connection comes in the Season 1 finale, during Shauna and Jackie’s final argument. Shauna chastises Jackie for narcissism — “The rest of us, we’re just extras in the movie of your fucking life!” — something Hillary struggles with CC about in Beaches.
“Did I force you to live in my shadow, Shauna?” Jackie says in Yellowjackets. “It must be hard being this jealous all the time. You’re so fucking jealous of me you can barely breathe.”
“Are you quoting Beaches at me right now?” Shauna scoffs incredulously.
“What?! No,” Jackie genuinely responds, as if she’s internalised the script to believe it’s her own words.
“You’re so fucking jealous of me you can barely breathe.”
The line Jackie apparently unknowingly quotes is from the scene in Beaches in which Hillary and CC have a brutally cold argument in a department store, in which everything they’ve ever wanted to say to each other comes out. Tensions rise as the subject turns to the idea of having children, and Hillary makes the outstandingly loaded statement, “I just thought someone like you wouldn’t care about children, you’re so obsessed with your career and all.” From here, Hillary keeps laying out the judgment, provoking an all-out home truth session between these two supposedly best friends. Ultimately, CC declares Hillary’s problem as “plain, old-fashioned jealousy.”
“I’m living the life you didn’t have the courage for, so don’t give me you’re not jealous,” she says. “You’re so jealous, you can hardly breathe.”
In a more subtle additional nod, Jackie’s “shadow” comment sounds like a reference to the lyric from Midler’s Grammy-winning Beaches song, “Wind Beneath My Wings” — “It must have been cold there in my shadow.”

In Season 2, the Beaches soundtrack makes yet another connection within the Yellowjackets team. The soundtrack would have peppered the Yellowjackets’ childhoods, as “Wind Beneath My Wings” topped the Billboard singles chart in 1989 and won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990. You wouldn’t have been able to escape it in New Jersey, in the team’s fictional hometown of Wiskayok. But importantly, one of the songs from Beaches makes an appearance in Season 2, episode 1 of Yellowjackets.
Though she’s constantly scorned by her teammates for it, Crystal enjoys a good sing, even in the wilderness. In one scene, when she believes she’s alone, Crystal busts out in a Broadway-hopeful version of “The Glory of Love” — the same song she was humming in the cabin earlier before Gen tells her to quit it.

“The Glory of Love” is featured twice in Beaches, marking the start and end of CC and Hillary’s friendship. It’s the first song Hillary hears her new friend CC performing as a kid (played by Mayim Bialik), and after Hillary’s funeral, Midler’s CC sings a sombre ballad version at one of her concerts, concluding the film.
“You know that song I just finished with?” CC tells Hillary’s daughter, Victoria, after the show. “I sang that song the day your mother and I met at Atlantic City. We were just about your age, did you know that?”

In Yellowjackets, Crystal breaks out into “The Glory of Love” thinking she’s performing solo in the snow post-pee. She’s surprised by Misty, who has been sent to collect ice for water again and who notably shares the unfortunate experience of being bullied by her fellow teammates. Misty instantly channels Gen and tells Crystal to can it; however, Crystal easily changes Misty’s mind.
“I know it’s annoying to people who aren’t into the theatre like I am,” she says, dropping the magic words for the audience, as we know Misty is big into it in her adult life, listening to the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack before kidnapping Jessica Roberts in Season 1. “You should try it sometime, it helps,” Crystal adds, before offering to teach Misty to sing, nay, “harmonise.” It’s the first offer of friendship and kindness Misty’s received from frankly anyone at Camp Yellowjackets, and she looks visibly humbled at this genuine olive branch.
That’s the story of, that’s glory of love.

With multiple Beaches references connecting the two series, Yellowjackets uses one of late ’80s, early ’90s cinema’s most famous screen friendships to draw parallels between the girls’ connections with each other. Sadly, Jackie and Shauna won’t enjoy a lifelong friendship like CC and Hillary’s, but there’s hope for Misty and Crystal.
Yellowjackets Season 2 is streaming on Showtime, with new episodes streaming weekly on Fridays(Opens in a new tab). Episodes also air every Sunday on Showtime at 9 p.m. ET.

MultiVersus open beta is shutting down but the game is set to return in 2024
MultiVersus’ open beta is shutting down, but the game is set to return in 2024 https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/multiversus-open-beta-is-shutting-down-but-the-game-is-set-to-return-in-2024/
Warner Bros. Games is shutting down MultiVersus’ open beta ahead of a full release targeted for early 2024. The open beta for the WB-themed free-to-play Super Smash Bros.-like brawler will be taken offline on June 25th.
While MultiVersus is offline, you can still play the game’s training room and local matches, and you can use any characters and in-game cosmetics you have unlocked. (If you want to be able to mess around with the offline features, you’ll need to download the game from digital storefronts before April 4th.) Any progress you have already made will carry over when the game is available again in 2024. But you won’t be able to get refunds due to the closure, according to an FAQ page, which might be frustrating for players who spent money on a game that they soon won’t be able to play online for months.
Because of the open beta, “we have a clearer view of what we need to focus on, specifically the content cadence of new characters, maps and modes to give you more ways to enjoy the game, along with updated netcode and more matchmaking improvements,” Tony Huynh, CEO and co-founder of MultiVersus developer Player First Games, wrote in a blog post. “We’ll also be reworking the progression system based on your feedback and looking at new ways for you to connect with your friends in the game.”

Elliott pulls Salesforce board noms: What it means
Elliott pulls Salesforce board noms: What it means https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/elliott-pulls-salesforce-board-noms-what-it-means/
Could activist peace be at hand at Salesforce? With the announcement Monday that Elliott would be withdrawing its nomination for the board of directors, it seems that the CRM leader could have forged a peace agreement. The question is: At what cost?
While it’s not clear what this agreement means to the other four activist firms operating inside the company, Elliott is likely pleased with the company’s recent changes including a surprisingly strong quarter combined with some moves like shareholder buy-backs, disbanding the M&A group and cost reduction strategies (which partly translated to laying off 10% of the staff).
But this doesn’t necessarily mean that Elliott’s work is done with the company, a person familiar with the agreement told TechCrunch+.
Surprisingly, the terms between the two companies doesn’t include a standstill agreement There wasn’t even an information-sharing agreement or any type of legal document prohibiting Elliott from speaking badly about the company, talking to the press or anything like that.
“So Elliott established an ongoing relationship. That doesn’t mean it’s walking away, or never going to come back,” said the person, who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak publicly on behalf of the company. “Like I said, with the freedom of no standstill if everything goes south a month from now or a couple of months from now, the firm can always come back and say, ‘You know, we’re still watching. We’re still involved, and here’s what we think you should do to make it better.’ Elliott doesn’t want that to happen. But that is a possibility that could happen.”
All of that gives Elliott a lot of leeway to continue to pressure the company should circumstances warrant it. But for now, at least, Salesforce appears to have appeased the activist firm, and it has the activists off its back ahead of the stockholder’s meeting in June.
