Jenfi raises more funding for its growth capital as a service platform
Jenfi raises more funding for its “growth capital as a service” platform https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/jenfi-raises-more-funding-for-its-growth-capital-as-a-service-platform/ Jenfi, a “growth-capital-as-a-service” platform, can provide online businesses with revenue-based financing in a little as a day. The Singapore-based startup announced today it has raised $6.6 million in pre-Series B funding, led by Headline Asia. Participation came from returning investor Monk’s Hill Ventures, which led Jenfi’s Series A two years ago, ICU Ventures, Granite Oak, Korea Investment Partners & Golden Equator Capital and Atlas Ventures. Since Jenfi’s inception four years ago, it has deployed more than $25 million in non-dilutive capital to about 600 companies. Its customers include Gushcloud, Ralali, Hello Health, Lamer Fashion, Buy2sell and Mystifly. The new funding will be used to grow its customer base in Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia, and expand into new markets in Southeast Asia, like Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. It will also enable Jenfi to refine its credit underwriting and risk assessment capabilities, including its proprietary risk assessment engine. The fintech was founded in 2019 by Jeffrey Liu and Justin Louie, who exited from their previous startup, fitness marketplace GuavaPass, when it was acquired by ClassPass. Jenfi’s “growth capital as a service” model was developed after the two realized that online business owners, like e-commerce sellers, SaaS and consumer tech providers, often had trouble getting capital to fund their growth expenses from traditional financial institutions. and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?w=437″ alt=”Jenfi co-founders Jeffrey Liu and Justin Louie” width=”437″ height=”680″ srcset=”https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg 1790w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=96,150 96w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=193,300 193w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=768,1196 768w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=437,680 437w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=987,1536 987w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=1315,2048 1315w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=771,1200 771w, https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Jeffrey-Liu-and-Justin-Louie-with-Y-Combinator-sign-1.jpg?resize=32,50 32w” sizes=”(max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px”/ Jenfi co-founders Jeffrey Liu and Justin Louie Businesses that apply to Jenfi can get financing ranging from $10,000 to $1 million to spend on marketing, inventory and growth campaigns. Liu told TechCrunch that aggregate sales generated by companies in Jenfi’s portfolio is now more than $150 million. Decisions about what businesses to lend to are made with Jenfi’s proprietary risk assessment engine, which integrates into data sources like accounting software, payment gateways, e-commerce platforms, online marketplaces and digital advertising. This lets Jenfi continuously monitor its borrowers’ business activity, including revenue growth and marketing return on investment. As Jenfi grows, it is adding more local market data sources, including selling management platform Haravan and POS management software KiotViet in Vietnam, and almost all banks in Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. Jenfi’s proprietary risk engine is one of the main ways it differentiates from other companies offering revenue-based financing to digital-native businesses, said Liu, because it means more comprehensive assessments of creditworthiness and tailored financing solutions. Since its Series A was announced, Jenfi has deployed its first machine learning-assisted underwriting system, which Liu said enables it to make faster underwriting decisions, with better accuracy and less human involvement. In the future, Jenfi will work with synthetic data to get a better understanding of client behavior and possible future outcomes. The company also plans to develop a tech platform to allow third-parties to use its proprietary scoring models in their own native infrastructure. Another way Jenfi differentiates from competitors is the flexibility of its repayment plans, said Liu. They range from three to twelve months and are designed to flexible, taking the needs of each business in mind. Repayment amounts are based on a pre-determined percentage of revenue, but that varies widely depending on business type. For example, a high-margin software business may be granted a higher revenue share percentage than businesses in another sector. The total amount of fees that a company pays depends on the credit score generated by its proprietary risk engine. Liu said rates are transparent and competitive, with no hidden fees or charges. Jenfi’s plans for the near future include offering growth capital to more clients through the use of dynamic limits, which can be adjusted based on client needs and creditworthiness. It will also launch an on-demand financing product to cover recurring growth capital needs like variable monthly ad spend. In a statement, Headline Asia partner Aki Okamoto and principal Jonathan M. Hayashi, said “We have been continuously conducting research on revenue-based financing, and have talked to almost every single player in this field in Asia. Jenfi absolutely stood out to us. Their technology, product, operation and traction are significantly better than their peers.” Source link The post Jenfi raises more funding for its “growth capital as a service” platform appeared first on Best Friendship Lamps.

Sonos app drops ability to play local Android music files
Sonos app drops ability to play local Android music files https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/sonos-app-drops-ability-to-play-local-android-music-files/ Sonos users have long been able to easily stream music tracks on their Android phones to Sonos speakers, but that feature is going away before the month is out. According to a Sonos support page spotted by The Verge, Sonos will drop its “on this device” feature for Android on May 23, a little more than a week away. That feature made it easy to play music tracks stored on an Android device directly on Sonos wireless speakers, such as the Sonos One, the Sonos Arc soundbar, and the new Sonos Era speakers. Why the change? As 9to5Google reports, a Sonos support forum post blames “newer versions of mobile operating systems” that “can sometimes change the way information is shared between devices.” and while some Android users may be tempted to blame the Google-Sonos legal spat for the disappearing feature, it’s worth noting that Sonos deprecated “on this device” functionality for iOS users three years ago. So, that’s the bad news. The good news is there are still plenty of ways to play your own music files on Sonos speakers, even if Chromecast isn’t one of them. The easiest way to stream your local Android music files to your Sonos speakers is via Bluetooth, although doing so requires a Sonos speaker that actually supports Bluetooth. The portable Sonos Move and Roam speakers are both Bluetooth-enabled, as are the new Era 100 and 300 speakers. Another method is to upload your music tracks to a streaming music service. YouTube Music, for example, lets you upload music tracks to free accounts, while Apple’s iTunes Match service costs $25 a year. Deezer offers MP3 uploads for its paid plans, starting at $10.99 a month. You can also set up a Plex media server, which is free to download for Mac, Windows, and Linux, and FreeBSD. Finally, you can put your music collection on a NAS and stream your tracks to Sonos over your home network.  Source link The post Sonos app drops ability to play local Android music files appeared first on Best Friendship Lamps.

E.U. Approves Microsofts $69 Billion Deal for Activision
E.U. Approves Microsofts $69 Billion Deal for Activision
E.U. Approves Microsoft’s $69 Billion Deal for Activision https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/e-u-approves-microsofts-69-billion-deal-for-activision/ Microsoft’s faltering $69 billion bid to buy the video game company Activision Blizzard received a glimmer of hope on Monday when European Union regulators approved what would be the largest consumer tech deal in two decades. E.U. officials said they would allow the deal after Microsoft, the maker of the Xbox console, made concessions to ensure that rival companies of new online gaming services would have continued access to titles developed by Activision, such as the hugely popular Call of Duty. Even so, the blockbuster acquisition, which has become a test of whether regulators around the world will approve a tech megamerger amid concerns about the industry’s power, still faces an uphill climb. American and British regulators have each moved to stop the acquisition in recent months, arguing that a combination of the Xbox maker with the company behind the Call of Duty franchise would hinder competition. Microsoft is fighting both actions. The deal has revealed fractures among regulators about how to crimp the power of the world’s biggest technology companies. Opposition to the acquisition has centered in part on so-called cloud gaming, a relatively new technology that lets people stream games on phones, tablets and other devices, potentially eliminating the need for hardware like consoles. American and British regulators said Microsoft’s purchase of Activision would undercut this still-developing sector of the gaming industry before it had a chance to bloom. The European Commission, the executive body for the 27-nation bloc, gave its approval after Microsoft agreed to guarantee for 10 years that gamers would be able to play Activision titles on cloud gaming services being developed by other companies, such as Nvidia. After negotiating the concessions with Microsoft, European Union officials said they concluded that the deal could go through, particularly because the cloud gaming market was still so small. Many Activision titles that are not currently playable on smaller cloud gaming services would now be available, providing a consumer boost for the new technology, the regulators said. “These commitments fully address the competition concerns identified by the commission and represent a significant improvement for cloud game streaming compared to the current situation,” the E.U. regulator said in a statement. Microsoft said the concessions would benefit consumers. “The European Commission has required Microsoft to license popular Activision Blizzard games automatically to competing cloud gaming services,” said Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft. “This will apply globally and will empower millions of consumers worldwide to play these games on any device they choose.” The European Commission said the deal would not harm the console market because Microsoft would not have an incentive to deny rivals, such as the Sony PlayStation, access to Activision titles without sacrificing profit. In the European Union, PlayStation has a much larger market share than Xbox. The deal shows the difficulty of reaching a global consensus to regulate an evolving technology industry. While policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic have expressed concern about the growing power of the tech industry, differences remain about when and how to intervene. The approval on Monday is a rare occasion where European regulators appear to be more accommodating than the United States. For years, European antitrust regulators, under Margrethe Vestager, have aggressively gone after big tech companies such as Google, issuing billions of dollars of fines and ordering changes to certain business practices. An E.U. new law taking effect by next year will add further competition oversight of the biggest tech firms. But in this instance it is the United States taking the tougher position. Lina Khan, the chair of the Federal Trade Commission, has made the challenging of mergers a central part of her plan to rein in the tech giants. The F.T.C. sued to block Microsoft’s purchase of Activision in December, arguing that the deal would harm consumers and lure gamers away from rivals. British regulators followed suit last month, rejecting the acquisition because of concerns about harming the cloud gaming market. Sarah Cardell, the chief executive of Britain’s antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority, said the decision reached by the European Commission gives Microsoft too much power to set the terms and conditions for the cloud gaming market for the next decade. “While we recognize and respect that the European Commission is entitled to take a different view, the C.M.A. stands by its decision,” Ms. Cardell said in a statement. An F.T.C. spokesman declined to comment. Approval in Brussels sets up a complicated legal chessboard for Microsoft and Activision, with few moves left to play. The fate of the deal will now hang largely on the legal process in the United States and Britain. The two companies must show that the deal would not constrain competition, particularly if Microsoft would guarantee access to Activision titles. While American courts have shown they can be more open to overruling government antitrust initiatives, in Britain it is less common for verdicts by the Competition and Markets Authority to be reversed. A loss in either country could be fatal for the deal because of the globalized and interconnected nature of the video game industry and the technology it uses. Source link The post E.U. Buy Me a Coffee removes far-right influencers and QAnon accounts https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/buy-me-a-coffee-removes-far-right-influencers-and-qanon-accounts/ Buy Me a Coffee, an online crowdfunding service for creators, has immediately reacted to a new report showing how far-right influencers were raising money on its platform. Dozens of influential figures in the QAnon conspiracy community have been banned from the Buy Me a Coffee platform, which allows users to drop one-off payments as well as recurring subscriptions in order to support their favorite creators. Other prominent online right-wing figures, including some of those who took part in the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, have also been suspended from the platform. SEE ALSO: QAnon influencers are now reportedly defrauding their followers via cryptocurrency scams The move from Buy Me a Coffee comes in response to a new report(opens in a new tab) from Media Matters for America that detailed some of the largest QAnon figures on the platform. QAnon is a far right-wing conspiracy theory whose followers believe that former President Donald Trump is fighting a secret war against a globalist cabal of baby-eating human-traffickers made up of Hollywood elites and Trump’s political enemies. QAnon believers became increasingly violent over the years, prompting warnings(opens in a new tab) from the FBI. Many social media platforms, like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, banned QAnon content over the past few years. (Twitter has since allowed(opens in a new tab) many formerly suspended(opens in a new tab) QAnon users back on the platform under its new owner, Elon Musk.) According to Media Matters, some of the QAnon figures that were using Buy Me a Coffee include Charlie Freak, Liz Crokin, and RedPill78. Other far-right figures found in the report include Patrick Casey and Baked Alaska. The more than two dozen accounts in Media Matters’ report, including the ones just mentioned, have all been removed from the Buy Me a Coffee platform. In total, these far-right accounts had raised close to $200,000 through Buy Me a Coffee before they were removed. “We strongly condemn hate groups and have a moderation team who take them down on a daily basis, even before they make any money,” said Buy Me a Coffee CEO Jijo Sunny in a statement provided to Media Matters. “This is sometimes overridden when people pretend to be someone else to raise money. We will continue to be extra cautious and take action as soon as it’s noticed or reported.” Source link The post Buy Me a Coffee removes far-right influencers and QAnon accounts appeared first on Best Friendship Lamps.

Microsoft will pay to capture carbon from burning wood
Microsoft will pay to capture carbon from burning wood https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/microsoft-will-pay-to-capture-carbon-from-burning-wood/ Microsoft just backed a big plan to capture carbon dioxide emissions from a wood-burning power plant. Today, the tech giant announced a deal with Danish energy company Ørsted to purchase credits representing 2.76 million metric tons of carbon dioxide captured at Ørsted’s Asnæs Power Station over 11 years. It’s one of the biggest deals any company has made to date to draw down carbon dioxide emissions, according to a press release from Ørsted. The move is supposed to help Microsoft hit its goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030, the point at which the company is removing more planet-heating carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it generates through its operations. It’s one of the biggest deals any company has made to date to draw down carbon dioxide emissions But technology to capture carbon dioxide emissions is still nascent, and some environmental groups and researchers are skeptical that the strategy Microsoft just helped to fund can be an effective way to tackle climate change. Without Microsoft’s support, Ørsted wouldn’t have been able to install carbon capture devices at its power plant. “Danish state subsidies and Microsoft’s contract were both necessary to make this project viable,” Ørsted’s announcement says. With Microsoft’s help, Ørsted was able to nab an even bigger, 20-year contract with the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) to capture CO2 emissions from Asnæs in western Zealand and a second power plant near Copenhagen. After the carbon capture devices are installed, they should be able to capture a total of 430,000 metric tons of CO2 annually by 2026. For comparison, that’s roughly equivalent to how much CO2 a single gas-fired power plant emits in a year. These power plants, however, burn wood chips and straw, fuels also known as “biomass.” and burning biomass, which can include agricultural waste and other plant material, as a sustainable energy source is controversial. The EU counts biomass as its biggest source of renewable energy, but a lot of the wood that’s burned has come from trees cut down in forests across Europe and the southeast US. Ørsted says the wood chips burned at its Asnæs Power Station “come from sustainably managed production forests and consists of residues from trimming or crooked trees.” How is burning trees supposed to be good for the environment? How is burning trees supposed to be good for the environment? After all, wood still releases CO2 when it’s burned. The argument is that trees or crops used to make biomass naturally take in and store CO2 when they’re alive. So if you replant the trees or plants, you can potentially have a fuel that’s carbon neutral. Ørsted is going one step further by adding technologies that can filter CO2 out of its power plants’ smokestacks, keeping it from wafting up into the atmosphere. By doing that, it believes its biomass-burning power plants will become carbon negative. They plan to bury the excess carbon dioxide they capture under the North Sea and sell credits to Microsoft representing each ton of CO2. Microsoft can then use those credits to claim that it has canceled out some of its own greenhouse gas pollution. If that all sounds like a tricky balancing act, it is. Previous research has found that burning woody biomass can create more CO2 emissions than what’s captured. That’s because only capturing smokestack emissions fails to account for all the pollution that might come from cutting down the trees and transporting the wood. Plus, it can take a long time for trees or plants to grow mature enough for people to rely on them to draw down a significant amount of CO2. “We think that the details are crucial,” Phillip Goodman, carbon removal portfolio director at Microsoft, says in an email to The Verge. An effective carbon capture project would need to use biomass “harvested from appropriate areas” and account for all of its “process” emissions, Goodman says. Microsoft declined to say how much it would pay Ørsted for carbon removal credits for this particular project. Microsoft has been making some bold bets on climate tech and clean energy technologies lately. Last week, it announced a plan to purchase electricity from a forthcoming nuclear fusion power plant — even though some experts don’t think such a cutting-edge power plant could realistically be developed for several more decades. Microsoft has also paid a Swiss company called Climeworks to filter CO2 out of the air. Kevin Systrom explains why Artifact wants to treat writers like the creators they are https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/kevin-systrom-explains-why-artifact-wants-to-treat-writers-like-the-creators-they-are/ Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have already shipped a ton of substantial updates for their news-focused app Artifact, which launched earlier this year but already looks very different from what debuted in January. On top of allowing users to follow writers on the platform, the latest update also provides a way for writers to claim their own profiles, upload a profile picture and fill out a bio, as well as gives them access to some basic stats about how their work is performing with the Artifact community. I spoke to Systrom about the new features, and about Artifact’s decision to focus on serving writers as a top priority, rather than just readers or consumers. Systrom sees writers as key to the platform’s growth, and he also believes Artifact can serve them in a way that no other platform or publishing paradigm has done to date. “From the writer side, it feels to me like there’s this trend of writers building more independent followings on Substacks, building more independent followings on Twitter, just for breaking news,” Systrom said. “The real issue with all of these is the lack of distribution, meaning like, if you want to create a following, how do you do it?” The idea is to build a connective layer between writers and their readers that doesn’t limit them to just one publication platform, like Substack, and that also doesn’t just happen to work for this purpose but is actually designed for myriad other things (like Twitter). “Maybe what we could do is create this marketplace where we match consumers with the writers of the things that they love reading, and we can build a following for these writers on Artifact,” Systrom explained regarding their thinking about where Artifact could go from here. Systrom immediately acknowledges that writers won’t find followings anywhere near comparable to those they might have built on Twitter or Substack on Artifact right now – but he notes that they only launched three-and-a-half months ago so that’s naturally going to be the case. If you’re a writer and you do verify your profile on Artifact, however, you might find you have a following already, since Artifact is creating placeholder profiles automatically for writers whose stories show up on the platform. and eventually, Systrom thinks the value inherent in a network designed for writers and readers will eclipse the value of the systems people use for that now. “Over time, you can absolutely imagine all sorts of great things happening when writers control their profiles, understand their audiences on Artifact, are able to understand who they’re catering to, which articles are doing really well, and which ones didn’t do so well,” he said. “Basically, as if they’re a creator on TikTok — and it all just starts to make sense.” Currently, writers who claim their profiles will be able to see how many people follow them on Artifact, as well as how many reads their articles have garnered through the app. You can view all the articles Artifact has attached to your byline so far, and get a read count per piece as well. In the future, Systrom says they’ll aim to surface additional and different information, depending on feedback they receive from the community, and from writers, about what it is that matters most to them in terms of their audience metrics — whether that’s the number of comments an article receives, or when articles are cited in other publications of note. Systrom rightly points out that there’s currently a disconnect now between audiences and writers, in that audiences often don’t know who the writers are who are writing about the things they love most — excepting the rarified few who manage to build up identities for themselves, often over the course of very long careers that span decades. Writers, likewise, often have no idea who their audiences are or where to find them, whether that’s because those relationships are mediated through the publications they write for, or because the metrics as they exist on dedicated platforms like Substack are siloed and independent of broader readerships. “What if we could be a matchmaker,” Systrom said. “Sometimes I laugh that we’re a glorified dating system for content, where people effectively swipe left or right on every story that they see — and the whole goal is matchmake. Sometimes your your relationship is with a publication, and sometimes it’s as short-lived as an article, but we believe that there’s this layer that doesn’t seem to exist anywhere else, which is this writer layer.” Artifact’s author pages (unclaimed on the left, claimed on the right) Artifact thus far is building its algorithmic news feed similar to how TikTok serves up content to its users, Systrom explains. Specifically, they show content to limited groups of users in order to gauge if it resonates. Once you find things that do, you broaden their distribution, continuing the process by expanding the reach of the stuff that resonates most as you continue to expand, further increasing distribution until you end up with a handful of “knockout hits.” Systrom says it’s hard for him to predict what’s going to work well on the platform from looking at signals like headlines, topics, etc., but he foresees a time when they can help writers better understand what makes something resonate with their audience and provide tools to help them do that more consistently. “Should writers be able to customize how their content appears on the platform,” he asked rhetorically, explaining how they think about their feature roadmap. “Should they be able to choose an image, should they be able to change the title, should they be able to like add a writer’s note underneath as context which might make it more likely that people will click through? If you could give writers a layer on top of everything they’re doing now to supercharge their careers, what would you do?” The appeal is also in providing writers with direct relationships with their readers, regardless of where they place their writing. Freelancers already span multiple outlets, and even most staff writers tend to spend time at various publications across their careers. The few writers who build enough of a reputation to exist as a brand in themselves end up on Substack or similar, but Systrom notes that so far, it has tended to be the up-and-coming writers who are quicker to come on to claim their profiles on Artifact. He thinks that’ll change with time, however, and bigger name writers will be able to walk in and have a healthy audience waiting for them on the app. “You get to just walk in and have these relationships,” he said. “and then, again, if a tool exists to then supercharge your career through analytics, through understanding notifications, through a verified badge, and where you can communicate directly with the people reading who are reading your stories — that’s all really exciting to me.” Systrom sees the focus on writers as the key to maximizing Artifact’s growth. I asked him about why that focus versus a focus on readers. He said that of course they debated different approaches since both are important user groups, but ultimately they decided that people who consume the most news typically have a lot of tools they love already, and they’ve dialed-in their approach to consumption in hyper-specific ways. The better strategy, then, was to try to differentiate on the writer and publisher side, where Systrom argues there’s a “lack of tools, a lack of distribution, a lack of analytics,” particularly in a mobile-first world. Plus, if Artifact can succeed in “supercharging” the game for writers, Systrom says that will serve to provide incentive for readership, too. “If they love Artifact for that, we will have a very useful audience to then interact and comment, which is unique content that you can only get on Artifact,” he said. “Whether [writers] add sidebars to their stories, that’s unique content eventually. We don’t have messaging publicly in the app yet, but you can imagine being able to message with readers or message with other writers around stories. If you can help with discovery of who’s linking to your content, how your content is performing, all of this means that there’s an engaged base of power users on your platform. and I believe that that allows you to then grow into readers as well.” Out the gate, Artifact earned comparisons to TikTok for its algorithmic delivery of stories, but the comparison is still more apt when you consider that Systrom and Krieger are laser-focused on creators and giving them what they need to reach new audiences and better engage with existing ones. Of course, as with any bet, it’s one that carries a lot of risk that it won’t work as intended, but writers are definitely a creator group that hasn’t enjoyed the explosion of platforms and audience tools that have popped up for those working in video, for instance. Systrom and Krieger already changed the game for photographers — who’s to say they can’t do the same for wordsmiths, too? Telly reveals its free dual-screen TV, complete with ads https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/telly-reveals-its-free-dual-screen-tv-complete-with-ads/ A 55-inch 4K HDR TV with a built-in soundbar, all for free? That’s the idea behind Telly, an upcoming dual-screen smart TV that its manufacturer will give away, provided you don’t mind dealing with ads. We first heard chatter about the Telly earlier this month, when manufacturer Telly Corp. was still in stealth mode. Now, Telly is going public with its free TV, which (according to Deadline) the company hopes to ship starting this summer. In a spec sheet supplied to The Verge, Telly says its new TV comes with a 55-inch main screen with 4K HDR resolution, plus a shorter, secondary “smart” screen running along the entirety of the main display’s width. Sandwiched between the two screens is a “powerful” five-driver soundbar, according to the spec sheet, while other features include an HD video camera, a motion sensor, a microphone array, and a “Hey Telly” voice assistant. A “non-intrusive” ad tucked in the corner of Telly’s second “smart” screen. Telly The Telly also comes with three HDMI inputs and a bundled Android TV dongle that allows for streaming from the likes of Netflix, Max, Disney+, and all the usual suspects, The Verge reports.  Naturally, you’ll be able to plug in other dongles and streaming boxes, such as an Apple TV, a Roku streaming stick, or an Amazon Fire TV player. On its website, Telly promises a variety of “new experiences” through the dual-screen design, including news and sports tickers, Zoom-powered video conferencing, a “game room” with roughly 40 video games (“from arcade classics to immersive multiplayer experiences”), streaming music, and “motion-tracking” fitness programs. The Telly and all its features come for free, but you’ll have to answer questions “about you and your household” before you take delivery on the set, and you will be seeing “non-intrusive” advertisements on the secondary screen, as noted on Telly’s website. That said, the company promises to keep user data private, with Telly CEO (and Pluto TV co-founder) Ilya Pozin telling Deadline that “everything is very transparent with our consumers.” Even so, will viewers cozy up to a second screen that’s continually buzzing with tickers, ads, and other distracting content, even if the TV itself is free? That’s the big question, and one we hope to answer once we check out a test unit. Your DNA Can Now Be Pulled From Thin Air. Privacy Experts Are Worried.
Your DNA Can Now Be Pulled From Thin Air. Privacy Experts Are Worried. https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/your-dna-can-now-be-pulled-from-thin-air-privacy-experts-are-worried/ David Duffy, a wildlife geneticist at the University of Florida, just wanted a better way to track disease in sea turtles. Then he started finding human DNA everywhere he looked. Over the last decade, wildlife researchers have refined techniques for recovering environmental DNA, or eDNA — trace amounts of genetic material that all living things leave behind. A powerful and inexpensive tool for ecologists, eDNA is all over — floating in the air, or lingering in water, snow, honey and even your cup of tea. Researchers have used the method to detect invasive species before they take over, to track vulnerable or secretive wildlife populations and even to rediscover species thought to be extinct. The eDNA technology is also used in wastewater surveillance systems to monitor Covid and other pathogens. But all along, scientists using eDNA were quietly recovering gobs and gobs of human DNA. To them, it’s pollution, a sort of human genomic bycatch muddying their data. But what if someone set out to collect human eDNA on purpose? New DNA collecting techniques are “like catnip” for law enforcement officials, says Erin Murphy, a law professor at the New York University School of Law who specializes in the use of new technologies in the criminal legal system. The police have been quick to embrace unproven tools, like using DNA to create probability-based sketches of a suspect. That could pose dilemmas for the preservation of privacy and civil liberties, especially as technological advancement allows more information to be gathered from ever smaller eDNA samples. Dr. Duffy and his colleagues used a readily available and affordable technology to see how much information they could glean from human DNA gathered from the environment in a variety of circumstances, such as from outdoor waterways and the air inside a building. The results of their research, published Monday in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, demonstrate that scientists can recover medical and ancestry information from minute fragments of human DNA lingering in the environment. Forensic ethicists and legal scholars say the Florida team’s findings increase the urgency for comprehensive genetic privacy regulations. For researchers, it also highlights an imbalance in rules around such techniques in the United States — that it’s easier for law enforcement officials to deploy a half-baked new technology than it is for scientific researchers to get approval for studies to confirm that the system even works. Genetic trash to genetic treasure It has been clear for decades that fragments of our DNA cover the planet like litter. It just didn’t seem to matter. Scientists believed DNA in the environment was too small and too degraded to be meaningfully recovered, much less used to identify an individual human being, unless it came from distinct samples like a bloodstain or an object someone had touched. Wildlife researchers embraced environmental DNA anyway because they’re only looking for very small segments of DNA — scanning for what they call bar codes that will identify the creatures in a sample to a species level. But after finding “surprising” levels of human eDNA in their samples while monitoring disease in Florida sea turtles, Dr. Duffy and his team set out to get a more accurate picture of the condition of human DNA in the environment, and to see how much information it could reveal about people in an area. As a proof of concept in one of their experiments, the researchers scooped up a soda-can-size sample of water from a creek in St. Augustine, Fla. They then fed the genetic material from the sample through a nanopore sequencer, which allows researchers to read longer stretches of DNA. The one they used cost about $1000, is the size of a cigarette lighter and plugs into a laptop like a flash drive. From the samples, the team recovered much more legible human DNA than they had anticipated. and as knowledge expands about human genetics, analysis of even limited samples can reveal a wealth of information. The researchers recovered enough mitochondrial DNA — passed directly from mother to child for thousands of generations — to generate a snapshot of the genetic ancestry of the population around the creek, which roughly aligns with the racial makeup reported in the latest census data for the area (although the researchers note that racial identity is a poor proxy for genetic ancestry). One mitochondrial sample was even complete enough to meet the requirements for the federal missing persons database. They also found key mutations shown to carry a higher risk of diabetes, cardiac issues or several eye diseases. According to their data, someone whose genetic material turned up in the sample had a mutation that could lead to a rare disease that causes progressive neurological impairment and is often fatal. The illness is hereditary and may not emerge until a patient’s 40s. Dr. Duffy couldn’t help but wonder — does that person know? Does the person’s family? Does the person’s insurance company? Surveillance and forensics Anna Lewis, a Harvard researcher who studies the ethical, legal and social implications of genetics research, said that environmental DNA hadn’t been widely discussed by experts in bioethics. But after the findings from Dr. Duffy and his colleagues, it will be. Technology focused on eDNA, she said, could be used for surveillance of certain kinds of people — for example, people with a specific ancestral background or with particular medical conditions or disabilities. The implications of such uses, researchers agree, depend on who is using the technology and why. While pooled eDNA samples could help public health researchers determine the incidence of a mutation that causes a disease in a community, that same eDNA sample could equally be used to find and persecute ethnic minorities. “This gives a powerful new tool to authorities,” Dr. Lewis said. “There’s internationally plenty of reason, I think, to be concerned.” Countries like China already conduct extensive and explicit genetic tracking of minority populations, including Tibetans and Uighurs. Tools like eDNA analysis could make it that much easier, she said. How much of an ethical minefield eDNA research will be also depends on the extent to which it’s possible to identify an individual. In some situations, it’s already achievable. The kind of genetic data Dr. Duffy recovered from public places wouldn’t work with the methods law enforcement personnel in the United States currently use to identify individuals, said Robert O’Brien, a forensic biologist at Florida International University and a former crime laboratory DNA analyst. When law enforcement DNA analysts compare a crime scene sample to a suspect, they’re looking at 20 markers spread across the human genome that are tracked by the F.B.I.’s Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS, Mr. O’Brien said. Those markers are only useful if there’s certainty that several of them come from the same person, and because the eDNA fragments Dr. Duffy studied can’t capture more than one marker at a time, a public place like the Florida stream becomes a nightmarish jigsaw puzzle. However, forensic researchers suggest that individual identification from eDNA could already be possible in enclosed spaces where fewer people have been. Last October, a team from the Oslo University Hospital’s forensic research center piloted a new technique to recover human DNA from air samples and was able to construct full CODIS profiles from airborne DNA inside an office. That highlights the possibility that law enforcement officials could use eDNA collected at crime scenes to incriminate people, even though wildlife ecologists who developed the techniques say the science isn’t mature enough for such purposes. Scientists have yet to pin down the fundamentals of eDNA, like how it travels through air or water or how it degrades over time. and nanopore sequencing — the technology that allowed Dr. Duffy’s team to find longer and more informative DNA fragments — still has a much higher error rate than older technologies, meaning an unusual genetic signature that seems like a promising lead could be a red herring. Who gets access when DNA is free for the taking? In the United States, rules vary widely for who is allowed to capture and analyze DNA. University scientists hoping to learn more about human eDNA must justify the scope and privacy concerns of their studies in an imperfect process involving ethics boards at their institutions that can limit or reject experiments. But there are no such guardrails for law enforcement officials trying out a new technology. “There’s an imbalance in almost all systems of the world between what law enforcement is allowed to do, versus publicly funded research, versus private companies,” said Barbara Prainsack, a professor at the University of Vienna who studies the regulation of DNA technology in medicine and forensics. While some countries, like Germany, have an approved green list of technologies and forms of evidence that law enforcement agencies can use, it’s exactly the reverse in the United States. “It’s a total wild west, a free for all,” said Ms. Murphy, the N.Y.U. law professor. “The understanding is police can sort of do whatever they want unless it’s explicitly prohibited.” Often, the public and other branches of government learn that law enforcement officials have adopted a new technique only at a news conference announcing an arrest, Ms. Murphy said. She pointed specifically to the arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo, the Golden State Killer, which the police credited to the use of genetic genealogy — entering crime scene DNA into family history databases and triangulating a criminal’s identity based on distant cousins. In those high-pro...

Online age verification is coming and privacy is on the chopping block
Online age verification is coming and privacy is on the chopping block
Online age verification is coming, and privacy is on the chopping block https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/online-age-verification-is-coming-and-privacy-is-on-the-chopping-block/ A spate of child safety rules might make going online in a few years very different, and not just for kids. In 2022 and 2023, numerous states and countries are exploring age verification requirements for the internet, either as an implicit demand or a formal rule. The laws are positioned as a way to protect children on a dangerous internet. But the price of that protection might be high: nothing less than the privacy of, well, everyone. Government agencies, private companies, and academic researchers have spent years seeking a way to solve the thorny question of how to check internet users’ ages without the risk of revealing intimate information about their online lives. But after all that time, privacy and civil liberties advocates still aren’t convinced the government is ready for the challenge.  “When you have so many proposals floating around, it’s hard to ensure that everything is constitutionally sound and actually effective for kids,” Cody Venzke, a senior policy counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), tells The Verge. “Because it’s so difficult to identify who’s a kid online, it’s going to prevent adults from accessing content online as well.” In the US and abroad, lawmakers want to limit children’s access to two things: social networks and porn sites. Louisiana, Arkansas, and Utah have all passed laws that set rules for underage users on social media. Meanwhile, multiple US federal bills are on the table, and so are laws in other countries, like the UK’s Online Safety Bill. Some of these laws demand specific features from age verification tools. Others simply punish sites for letting anyone underage use them — a more subtle request for verification. Online age verification isn’t a new concept. In the US, laws like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) already apply special rules to people under 13. and almost everyone who has used the internet — including major platforms like YouTube and Facebook — has checked a box to access adult content or entered a birth date to create an account. But there’s also almost nothing to stop them from faking it.  As a result, lawmakers are calling for more stringent verification methods. “From bullying and sex trafficking to addiction and explicit content, social media companies subject children and teens to a wide variety of content that can hurt them, emotionally and physically,” Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), the backer of the Protect Kids Online Act, said. “Just as parents safeguard their kids from threats in the real world, they need the opportunity to protect their children online.” Age verification systems fall into a handful of categories. The most common option is to rely on a third party that knows your identity — by directly validating a credit card or government-issued ID, for instance, or by signing up for a digital intermediary like Allpasstrust, the service Louisianans must use for porn access. More experimentally, there are solutions that estimate a user’s age without an ID. One potential option, which is already used by Facebook and Instagram, would use a camera and facial recognition to guess whether you’re 18. Another, which is highlighted as a potential age verification solution by France’s National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL), would “guess” your age based on your online activity. As pointed out by CNIL’s report on various online age verification options, all these methods have serious flaws. CNIL notes that identifying someone’s age with a credit card would be relatively easy since the security infrastructure is already there for online payments. But some adult users — especially those with lower incomes — may not have a card, which would seriously limit their ability to access online services. The same goes for verification methods using government-issued IDs. Children can also snap up a card that’s lying around the house to verify their age. “As we think about kids’ online safety, we need to do so in a way that doesn’t enshrine and legitimize this very surveillance regime that we’re trying to push back on” Similarly, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) has expressed concerns about online age verification. In a report it updated in March, the US legislature’s in-house research institute found that many kids aged 16 to 19 might not have a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, that they can use to verify their age online. While it says kids could use their student ID instead, it notes that they may be easier to fake than a government-issued ID. The CRS isn’t totally on board with relying on a national digital ID system for online age verification either, as it could “raise privacy and security concerns.” Face-based age detection might seem like a quick fix to these concerns. and unlike a credit card — or full-fledged facial identification tools — it doesn’t necessarily tell a site who you are, just whether it thinks you’re over 18.  But these systems may not accurately identify the age of a person. Yoti, the facial analysis service used by Facebook and Instagram, claims it can estimate the age of people 13 to 17 years old as under 25 with 99.93 percent accuracy while identifying kids that are six to 11 years old as under 13 with 98.35 percent accuracy. This study doesn’t include any data on distinguishing between young teens and older ones, however — a crucial element for many young people. Although Yoti claims its system has no “discernible bias across gender or skin tone,” previous research indicates that facial recognition services are less reliable for people of color, gender-nonconforming people, and people with facial differences or asymmetry. This would, again, unfairly block certain people from accessing the internet.  It also poses a host of privacy risks, as the companies that capture facial recognition data would need to ensure that this biometric data doesn’t get stolen by bad actors. UK civil liberties group Big Brother Watch argues that “face prints’ are as sensitive as fingerprints” and that “collecting biometric data of this scale inherently puts people’s privacy at risk.” CNIL points out that you could mitigate some risks by performing facial recognition locally on a user’s device — but that doesn’t solve the broader problems.  Inferring ages based on browsing history raises even more problems. This kind of inferential system has been implemented on platforms like Facebook and TikTok, both of which use AI to detect whether a user is under the age of 13 based on their activity on the platform. That includes scanning a user’s activity for “happy birthday” messages or comments that indicate they’re too young to have an account. But the system hasn’t been explored on a larger scale — where it could involve having an AI scan your entire browsing history and estimate your age based on your searches and the sites you interact with. That would amount to large-scale digital surveillance, and CNIL outright calls the system “intrusive.” It’s not even clear how well it would work. In France, where lawmakers are working to restrict access to porn sites, CNIL worked with Ecole Polytechnique professor Olivier Blazy to develop a solution that attempts to minimize the amount of user information sent to a website. The proposed method involves using an ephemeral “token” that sends your browser or phone a “challenge” when accessing an age-restricted website. That challenge would then get relayed to a third party that can authenticate your age, like your bank, internet provider, or a digital ID service, which would issue its approval, allowing you to access the website. The system’s goal is to make sure a user is old enough to access a service without revealing any personal details, either to the website they’re using or the companies and governments providing the ID check. The third party “only knows you are doing an age check but not for what,” Blazy explains to The Verge, and the website would not know which service verified your age nor any of the details from that transaction. Blazy hopes this system can prevent very young children from accessing explicit content. But even with this complex solution, he acknowledges that users in France will be able to get around the method by using a virtual private network (VPN) to conceal their location. This is a problem that plagues nearly any location-specific verification system: as long as another government lets people access a site more easily, users can route their traffic through it. The only surefire solution would be draconian crackdowns on privacy tools that would dramatically compromise freedom online. Some governments are trying to offer a variety of options and let users pick between them. A report from the European Parliament Think Tank, an in-house department that helps shape legislation, highlights an EU “browser-based interoperable age verification method” called euCONSENT, which will allow users to verify their identity online by choosing from a network of approved third-party services. Since this would give users the ability to choose the verification they want to use, this means one service might ask a user to upload an official government document, while another might rely on facial recognition.  To privacy and civil liberties advocates, none of these solutions are ideal. Venzke tells The Verge that implementing age verification systems encourages a system that collects our data and could pave the way for more surveillance in the future. “Bills that are trying to establish inferences about how old you are or who you are based on that already existing capitalistic surveillance, are just threatening to legitimize that surveillance,” Venzke says. “As we think about kids’ online safety, we need to do so in a way that doesn’t enshrine and...

U.S.-Made Technology Is Flowing to Sanctioned Russian Airlines
U.S.-Made Technology Is Flowing to Sanctioned Russian Airlines
U.S.-Made Technology Is Flowing to Sanctioned Russian Airlines https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/u-s-made-technology-is-flowing-to-sanctioned-russian-airlines/ Last August, Oleg Patsulya, a Russian citizen living near Miami, emailed a Russian airline that had been cut off from Western technology and materials with a tempting offer. He could help circumvent the global sanctions imposed on Rossiya Airlines after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by shuffling the aircraft parts and electronics that it so desperately needed through a network of companies based in Florida, Turkey and Russia. “In light of the sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation, we have been successfully solving challenges at hand,” Mr. Patsulya wrote, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday with the U.S. District Court in Arizona. Mr. Patsulya and his business partner were arrested Thursday on charges of violating U.S. export controls and international money laundering in a case that illustrates the global networks that are trying to help Russia bypass the most expansive technological controls in history. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United States has acted in partnership with nearly 40 other governments to impose sanctions on Russia, including limits on Moscow’s access to weapons, computer chips, aircraft parts and other products needed to fuel its economy and its war. The sanctions also applied to Russian airlines including Aeroflot, its subsidiary Rossiya and others. But despite these far-reaching sanctions, thousands of shipments of aircraft parts were successfully sent into Russia last year, according to a trove of Russian customs data obtained by The New York Times. The data, which was compiled and analyzed by Import Genius, a U.S.-based trade data aggregator, shows that tens of millions of dollars of aircraft parts were sent to Russian airlines explicitly sanctioned by the Biden administration, including to Rossiya Airlines, Aeroflot, Ural Airlines, S7 Airlines, Utair Aviation and Pobeda Airlines. Those shipments were made possible by illicit networks like Mr. Patsulya’s, which have sprung up to try to bypass the restrictions by shuffling goods through a series of straw buyers, often in the Middle East and Asia. For instance, dozens of shipments of copper wires, bolts, graphite and other parts marked as made in the United States by Boeing slipped into the warehouses of Aeroflot last year. They traversed obscure trading companies, free-trade zones and industrial parks in the United Arab Emirates and China, and then traveled into Russia, to help patch up Aeroflot’s dilapidated fleet. The data captures more than 5,000 individual shipments of aircraft parts into Russia over a period of eight months in 2022, from simple screws to a Honeywell-branded aircraft engine starter valued at $290,000. In all, it shows that $14.4 million of U.S.-made aircraft parts were sent into Russia during the eight months, including $8.9 million of parts that are described as being manufactured or trademarked by the U.S. plane maker Boeing and sold into Russia via third parties. Boeing said it had fully complied with U.S. sanctions and had suspended providing parts, maintenance and technical support for customers in Russia in early 2022. Experts in the aviation supply chain said the parts probably came from a variety of sources, such as existing overseas stocks from airlines and repair facilities or resellers who trade in scrapped parts. Most of the products were routed through countries like the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, China and the Maldives, according to the data. But a handful of shipments — including to Rossiya — were sent directly from the United States or Europe. The shipments also increased over the course of last year as Russia recruited global businesses to help it bypass the sanctions. The trend suggests that “networks for evading sanctions took time to establish during the immediate post-export-control scramble but are now in a position to help Russian airlines source some key parts,” said William George, the director of research at Import Genius. The Russian nationals taken into custody on Thursday began setting up their scheme last May to send aircraft parts from the United States to Russia in violation of export regulations, according to the criminal complaint. The men are accused of fielding requests for parts, including expensive brake systems for a Boeing 737, from at least three Russian airlines, including two that had been strictly barred from purchasing U.S.-made products through a so-called temporary denial order issued by the Commerce Department. F.B.I. agents raided a condo owned by the men’s company in the Trump Towers in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., on Thursday, The Miami Herald reported. Lawyers for the men did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Despite the level of sanctions evasion, airplane shipments into Russia remain significantly lower than before the war. U.S. officials say Russian airlines have been forced to cannibalize planes, breaking them down for spare parts to keep others in operation, as well as turning to Iran for maintenance and parts. Russia’s imports of aircraft and aircraft parts fell from $3.45 billion annually before the invasion to only about $286 million afterward, according to The Observatory of Economic Complexity, a data visualization platform that explores global trade dynamics. According to Silverado Policy Accelerator, a Washington nonprofit, China has been the leading overall exporter of parts for aircraft, spacecraft and drones to Russia since the invasion, accounting for about half of all shipments, followed by India. The number of single-aisle planes in use in Russia fell about 16 percent from the summer of 2021 to the summer of 2022, after the invasion, according to Cirium, an aviation data provider. The number of larger twin-aisle planes, often used on international routes, was down about 40 percent. Aviation experts say it will become more challenging for Russian airlines to continue flying planes without access to Western suppliers and help from Boeing and Airbus. The manufacturers regularly consult with airlines to assess any damage and strictly control access to technical documentation used by mechanics. But for now, Russian airlines have been kept alive with the help of international shipments and the use of hundreds of foreign jets that were stranded there after the war began. Tens of thousands of flights are expected to crisscross Russia this month, according to schedules published by Cirium. More than 21,000 flights — over half of them operated by Russian airlines — are expected to carry passengers to and from countries in Central Asia, as well as Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, China and Thailand. Half a dozen export control lawyers and former government officials consulted by The New York Times said that many of the shipments in the Import Genius data likely violated sanctions, but that plane makers like Boeing or Airbus were not necessarily at fault. The aviation supply chain is complex and global, and the parts could have come from a variety of sources. “There is pretty clearly a violation,” said William Reinsch, a trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies who oversaw export controls during the Clinton administration. “Less clear is the guilty party.” Aircraft parts originating in the European Union, including those marked as being manufactured or trademarked by Airbus, were also shipped into Russia last year, according to the data. Justin Dubon, a spokesman for Airbus, said that the company keeps track of genuine parts and documentation provided to its customers and conducts due diligence on all parties requesting spare parts. Restrictions in the United States and Europe mean that “there is no legal way that genuine aircraft parts, documentation and services can get to Russian carriers,” he said. U.S. restrictions technically allow companies to apply for a special license to continue sending products to Russian carriers for “safety of flight” reasons, but both Boeing and Airbus said that they had neither sought nor received such a license. In addition, Airbus said that E.U. laws prevent it from shipping such goods to Russia, regardless of U.S. licensing. Current and former U.S. officials say that some shipments into Russia are to be expected. Kevin Wolf, a partner at the law firm Akin Gump who oversaw export controls during the Obama administration, said the restrictions “can never block everything,” but that the rules were still significantly degrading Russia’s capabilities. He added that the scope of the new rules still exceed current methods of tracking and enforcement in other allied countries. Until the invasion of Ukraine, trade in aircraft parts was mostly unrestricted by the United States and other countries, except to Iran, Cuba, North Korea and Syria. “It’s improving,” Mr. Wolf said, “but it’s still way, way behind.” Compared with other countries that mostly limit their scrutiny to goods crossing their own borders, the United States is unparalleled in its attempt to police commerce around the world. In the past three years, the United States has imposed new technology restrictions for Russia, China and Iran that apply extraterritorially: Products made in the United States, or in foreign countries with the help of American components or technology, are subject to U.S. rules even when changing hands on the other side of the world. Both the United States and the European Union have been ramping up penalties for companies that violate sanctions, and dispatching officials to countries like Kazakhstan to try to persuade them to clamp down on shipments to Russia through their territory. The U.S. government has nine export control officers stationed in Istanbul, Beijing and other locations to trace shipments of sensitive products, and it is setting up three more offices. But...

M-KOPA snaps up $250M debt equity for its asset financing platform
M-KOPA snaps up $250M debt equity for its asset financing platform
M-KOPA snaps up $250M+ debt, equity for its asset financing platform https://bestfriendshiplamps.com/m-kopa-snaps-up-250m-debt-equity-for-its-asset-financing-platform/ M-KOPA, the asset financing platform that offers underbanked African customers access to “productive assets” and the ability to pay for them via digital micropayments, has secured over $250 million in new funding.  The capital injection includes $55 million in equity and over $200 million in debt, huge sums in both categories that testify to strong fundamentals and solid performance for any growth-stage company in this venture capital’s current contraction. Following the $75 million in equity the Kenyan-based fintech announced last March, M-KOPA has raised $245 million in equity funding since its inception in 2011.  Japanese-based trading house Sumitomo Corporation, which M-KOPA co-founder and CEO Jesse Moore on a call with TechCrunch, described as the type of investor whose long-term visions complement M-KOPA’s aspirations, led the growth equity capital, donating the lion’s share at $36.5 million. “They share with us a conviction that even though there might be wobbles in the economy, there’s an undeniable trend towards progress and an undeniable trend that the technology enablement of financial services and other digital services will only make the continent more successful,” commented the CEO on Sumimoto’s first significant fintech-focused investment on the continent. The firm, known for its infrastructural deals in Africa, in a statement, said, “By leveraging each expertise and resource, we believe this partnership will have a positive impact on both the financial and telecommunications sectors, ultimately enriching the lives of people across the continent.” Meanwhile, Blue Haven Initiative, Lightrock, Broadscale Group and Latitude, the sister fund to Local Globe, participated in the equity round alongside Sumimoto. Underbanked customers in emerging markets face challenges due to low-income, limited credit histories, and lack of collateral. Strong identity and credit scoring infrastructure in developed markets enables various credit options, allowing individuals to make large purchases through post-paid methods. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, where 85% of the population lives on less than $5.50 per day, making major purchases without credit is difficult, while access to credit remains limited. Also, in these markets, individuals have limited pre-existing financial identities and conventional collateral.  M-KOPA’s business revolves around using debt to finance customers’ purchase of products and services it sells, such as smartphones and solar power systems, as well as loans and health insurance across four markets: Kenya, Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria. With its flexible credit model, the business allows individuals to pay a small deposit for the two products above and pay off through micro-installments, helping build their credit history over time. Default rates are little above 10%.  Until now, M-KOPA had received a little over $100 million in working capital financing for this repayment cycle. It has doubled that amount with this new financing. Standard Bank, Africa’s largest bank in terms of assets, provided half of the $200 million+ “sustainability-linked” debt financing. Development financial institutions: the IFC, FMO, and BII and funds managed by Lion’s Head Global Partners, Mirova SunFunder, and Nithio supplied the rest.  Moore noted in a TechCrunch interview that the funding, one of the largest combined debt and equity raises in African tech, will allow M-KOPA to double the size of its now 3-million-strong customer base in existing markets (a metric which already witnessed an 85% CAGR from 2020 to 2022.) The asset financier also intends to: extend its financial services offerings and product sets and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Kenya and Uganda, where its solar product is more prominent. However, what remains a top priority for the company is to continue to drive women’s financial inclusion across its operations (in 2020, when M-KOPA sold smartphones in Kenya, about 30% of its customers were women; two years later, it now stands slightly over 40% but the objective is to reach over 60%, the company’s chief executive noted.) “Across all the markets, one key theme for us, in terms of broader impact, is our ability to close the gender gap of our consumers and I think we’re starting to make a notable impact on that problem. Data shows that women in sub-Saharan Africa are 20% less likely than men to own a smartphone,” said Moore. “There’s work to be done and our sustainability-linked facility is effectively an agreement between the lenders and M-KOPA to continue to try to overachieve on that front, especially as the quality of credit from female customers bests that of men globally so the ability to reach more female consumers with life-enhancing smartphones, and digital financial services is a win-win for us.” In addition, last year, M-KOPA claimed to have provided over $600 million in cumulative credit for its underbanked customers via a network of over 10,000 agents. 52% of these agents are women, Moore disclosed on the call, and the credit figure now touches over $1 billion. Various models, such as agency banking and community-based finance, tackle the financial inclusion problem in Africa. But the pay-as-you-go model employed by M-KOPA, which starts with providing assets on a credit sale basis (as the wedge fintech product) and building on that relationship to cross-sell financial services via partnerships (for instance, it partnered with Turaco to offer health insurance), is unique in itself, and according to Moore, “highly scalable, very commercially sustainable with a huge impact.” Given its success in East and West Africa, where it has sold over a million solar home systems and helped avoid 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, M-KOPA will now set its sights on South Africa, where Moore says the company is ready to open a pilot operation in the next few weeks. Electric mobility is also a category the ten-year-old asset financier, which directly employs nearly 2,000 people across Africa, plans to test out, starting in Nairobi.  “There’s a huge demand for life-enhancing products like smartphones and solar systems, which are difficult to afford, but we’ve made them affordable and accessible to our customers,” said Moore. “Our next category in R&D right now is electric motorcycles. We’re very excited about electric mobility and we’re sure that in the next couple of decades, there will be a big switch in ownership where electric motorbikes will scale when there’s financing to go with them.” Source link The post M-KOPA snaps up $250M+ debt, equity for its asset financing platform appeared first on Best Friendship Lamps.
