I have been using Amazon's Kindle for years; I love reading books on mine. But as I've been thinking about ownership, digital content, and the power that Amazon has, I've decided to stop buying (or licensing) Kindle books. I talk about some of the problems Kindle has – the ability to revoke content, edit books after you buy them, and revise their terms of service – and then talk about some concrete steps I'm taking next.

I look at the history of the internet, from ARPANET & NSFNET, through privatization, to Tim-Berners Lee, Yahoo, Netscape, Google, eBay, and Facebook, examining Microsoft's antitrust court case and their battle against Open Source and Free Software, Bill Gate's Open Letter to Hobbyists and the leaked Halloween Documents. Then we take a look at the emergence of Surveillance Capitalism, and how platforms like AirBnb & Uber coopt the idea of the community and lobby politicians. Finally, we take a look at some alternatives.

AT&T Archives: Saul Bass Pitch Video for Bell System Logo Redesign
For more from the AT&T Archives, visit http://techchannel.att.com/archivesSaul Bass' work in logo design and movie title credit sequences spanned the latter half of the 20th century, with prominent work in each field. He worked closely with AT&T, designing not only the 1970 "bell" logo that was ubiquitous for a decade, but also the globe logo unveiled in 1983.One reason for this bell logo's ubiquity? The redesign was the largest corporate re-identity program in the U.S., ever. The redesign covered:135,000 Bell System vehicles22,000 buildings1,250,000 phone booths170,000,000 telephone directoriesThis film was made by Bass' company as a presentation to AT&T executives. It would have extended to be shown to the public, but a number of his ideas in the film were not ultimately adopted, like his phone booth designs, and men's and women's uniforms. But a great many of the design were adopted—including, most memorably, the telephone vans and hardhat designs of the 1970s. Bass designed down to the details, showcasing in this film a myriad of ideas, like Yellow Pages book designs, cufflinks for executives, and flags.Bass' other very recognizable logo designs that persist today include those for Minolta, Girl Scouts of America, Avery International, Geffen Records, Warner Int'l, and many more. And Bass' later, 1983 design for AT&T (the striped/encircled globe) was the foundation for the logo that the company has today, though redesigned in 2005 by Interbrand.Produced by Saul BassFootage courtesy of AT&T Archives and History Center, Warren, NJ

Five Executive Abilities that all people have but ADHD people are deficit/delayed in.
1) Can you stop? Self-restraint. A quote “Everything comes to those who can wait!” Can you delay your behavior so you can do the best action?
2) The Mind’s Eye. Mental Imagery. You will recall the relevant past and use the past to do better behavior in the future. ADHD people can’t do this. You lack hindsight, and without hindsight you can do foresight.
3) The Mind’s Voice. You can’t talk to yourself, internally. Starting at the age of five you can separate what you do with what you think, you now have a “voice in your head “to help control your body so you can do better actions that affect your body and your brain.
4) The Mind’s Heart. The ability to manage your emotions so your body and mind work towards your long term best interest.
5) The Mind’s Playground. The ability to imagine dozens of possible futures and pick the best one with the best perceived results. Since you can’t perceive the future well due to the mind’s eye, and you have a working memory problem it is so hard to use the Mind’s Playground to his best abilities.
Not covered in this video, but in the years since the video Barkley has added another executive function which is a combination and expansion of all the previous executive functions. This 6 executive function is the mind awareness of itself.
http://www.continuingedcourses.net/active/courses/course069.php
The 6th executive function is
6) The Mind’s Awareness of Itself, especially through time and space. Self-Awareness of what is happening to you in the past, the present, and will happen to you in the future. This is actually the first thing toddlers learn, how itself interacts with the environment but it is also the last executive function to fully develop for the perception of time and the future self is still developing even in your late twenties.
Originally number 6 was part of the number 2 (the Mind’s Eye and the ability to do hindsight and foresight) but Barkley eventually thinks it needs its own point, for it is so much more than just visualization. It is your sense of TIME, you get so wrapped in things that you lose track of time, you do not have an objective idea of time, it is so subjective and so often wrong with predicting what the future is going to be.

How The Professional Managerial Class Stand In The Way Of Progress
The Professional Managerial Class or PMCs are liberal white-collar workers who ensure that the status quo remains the same.

So the professional-managerial class today are people who hold higher degrees. often belong to professional organizations like doctors and professors like me. We have professional organizations that are supposed to regulate what we do. Lawyers have the bar association. And within this class we also have striations. Because people go to a state school like the one I teach in which is still, you know, pretty elite. They are different from people who go to the ivy league or different from people who go to the small liberal arts colleges. and today's media and content producers are inordinately dominated by PMC people who have gone to elite universities and elite graduate schools and then come from a very tiny handful of schools. mostly on the east coast. So to give a little historical background there are also white-collar workers right? And I like to define them as people who are not working with their bodies. So in 1900 let's say in America which was mostly agricultural and with a growing industry based. They're only three percent of like white-collar workers or professionals. and today they make up about 25% of the workforce. They were defined by Barbara and John Ehrenreich as a group of vanguardists on the liberal left in 77 who were completely taking over left liberal organizing spaces like the democratic party. and what they saw was this professional manager-class dominance of liberalism at the expense of working-class people and working-class interests. So that's one thing I want to make clear. the other thing that I've noticed online because I sometimes do spend a lot too much time online. is that people have started taking up working class as a kind of purity politics. like I'm working class you're a PMC scumbag. and it's like that's not class analysis. The PMC actually loves to moralize things. and to make things pure. like they're pure. They recycle. Do you know lifestyle maintenance-type things?
