Este año, el Festival de Cine Europeo de Sevilla reconoce con el Giraldillo de Honor a Jim Sheridan, uno de los grandes narradores del cine contemporáneo. Director, guionista y productor, Sheridan ha construido una filmografía profundamente humana donde el conflicto social, la identidad y la familia se entrelazan con una emoción casi poética. Su mirada ha cruzado fronteras sin perder nunca su raíz, Irlanda.    Criarse en el barrio obrero de Sheriff Street en el seno de una familia comprometida con el activismo social fue algo que moldeó su interés por las historias de gente común enfrentada a circunstancias extraordinarias. Su debut en el cine fue arrollador. ‘Mi pie izquierdo’ retrata la vida de Christy Brown, un hombre con parálisis cerebral que logra expresarse a través de la pintura y la escritura. La interpretación de Daniel Day-Lewis le valió el Óscar al mejor actor, y Sheridan fue nominado como director y guionista. “Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts… Cómo pueden ser tan buenos logrando falsificar el alma de esa manera. Los actores tienen que mostrar capacidades y habilidades, pero sobre todo conseguir una expresión verdadera de las emociones. Con Daniel he trabajado en varias ocasiones, y tiene una técnica impresionante. Me fascina Klaus Kinski. Para él la cámara era más que una persona. Más que cualquiera al que conociera”. Con ‘En el nombre del padre’ dio el salto internacional. La historia de los Cuatro de Guildford convirtió la pantalla en el alegato de una búsqueda de redención entre padre e hijo, en la que Daniel Day-Lewis volvió a ofrecer una interpretación icónica. Sheridan fue nominado al Óscar en tres categorías. Se acompañaba también de una interesante banda sonora que incluía temas propios de Bono & Gavin Friday y una canción también escrita por el dúo para Sinead O'Connor. Si digo que Emma Thompson estaba brillante, no descubro nada. “Nos estamos quedando sin caminos en el cine. Cuando pasamos de veinticuatro fotogramas a digital no entendíamos el cambio tan profundo que estaba sucediendo. El público cambió. Quería ver lo increíble, como Spiderman. Pienso que las limitaciones son buenas. Tener “X” rollo para rodar. Una cantidad ilimitada no te permite elegir.” ‘The Boxer’ cerró esa trilogía no oficial sobre Irlanda. Ambientada en el Belfast posconflicto, la película se aleja del discurso ideológico para adentrarse en lo íntimo: la imposibilidad del amor en mitad de la violencia. Dice que intenta buscar cómo socializar el cine de nuevo.     “Las plataformas de streaming le dan a la gente un mando a distancia. Yo no hago una película para que se pause a la mitad. Yo paro muchísimas películas a los quince minutos y luego no las retomo. Nadie va ya al cine ni a la Iglesia. La televisión es ahora el púlpito”.  Una de sus películas, ‘In America’, se basa parcialmente en su propia vida familiar y experiencia de emigración, y fue escrita junto a sus hijas. “En Estados Unidos no interesa la colectividad. Si quieres hacer algo allí, tienes que buscar la individualidad”. Con ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’, la historia sobre el rapero 50 Cent, Sheridan admitió que mucha gente se sorprendió de que él, conocido por dramas sociales irlandeses, dirigiera un biopic de hip-hop. Tuvo que confesar que le gustaba el rap y la cultura musical urbana de Estados Unidos desde los ochenta. Sheridan sigue manteniendo que para él lo más importante al rodar no es tanto la posición de la cámara o los grandes efectos, sino “la verdad emocional”. También el convencimiento de que si no se hubiera afiliado al sindicato de directores, no tendría pensión hoy.  “El sistema de distribución está cada vez más centralizado. ¿Me puede explicar alguien por qué una peli que ha costado trescientos millones y otra que ha supuesto un millón tienen una entrada con el mismo precio? Lo llaman entretenimiento, pero a mí me aburre como a una ostra. Están deshumanizando el sistema, no quieren que haya estrellas”.  Sigue en activo, inmerso en una peli sobre leones marinos y el cambio climático. Esta noche se proyectará también su última película, ‘Re-Creation’, basada en uno de los crímenes sin resolver más mediáticos de Irlanda, el asesinato en 1996 de la cineasta francesa Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Se centra en un jurado que debe decidir si el periodista británico Ian Bailey, sospechoso pero nunca juzgado en Irlanda, es culpable del crimen.
