Duke Special is een Noord-Ierse singer songwriter met een gezonde en originele hang naar het verleden. Nick Cave, Elliott Smith, Tom Waits, Van Morrison en Randy Newman behoren tot zijn voorbeelden. Het werk van schrijver Berthold Brecht en componist Kurt Weil heeft een grote impact op dat van Duke. Niet zo gek dat in een gesprek mer Duke al gauw de naam valt van Gavin Friday, die andere Ier die al in de jaren tachtig het werk van Weil en Brecht aan de man bracht.
Duke Special bracht onlangs een driedubbel cd uit. Maandag 26 april treedt hij op in Paradiso/Bitterzoet in Amsterdam en een dag eerder is Duke Special te zien op het Belgische Dranouter festival in De Panne. Zwartejas sprak begin april al met Duke Special in Amsterdam.
