In Defense of Degrowth
In Defense of Degrowth
There is a critical need to reassess the focus on continuous growth in the global economic system. The concept of “degrowth” challenges the necessity of perpetual economic expansion for human prosperity, suggesting it contradicts ecological sustainability on a planet with finite resources. Despite some resistance, especially from the business sector, the arguments supporting degrowth underscore the inextricable link between economic growth and environmental degradation, proposing a shift toward more sustainable business practices and a reevaluation of the myths surrounding “sustainable growth,” such as the effectiveness of energy transitions and efficiency improvements, which often overlook significant environmental impacts and dependencies on existing energy infrastructures. The article advocates for a societal movement toward reducing consumption and over-production, while embracing values of care and redistribution, challenging traditional market-first ideologies.

Post-Growth Living
Post-Growth Living
The reality of runaway climate change is inextricably linked with the mass consumerist, capitalist society in which we live. And the cult of endless growth, and endless consumption of cheap disposable commodities isn't only destroying the world, it is damaging ourselves and our way of being. How do we stop the impendin

Live More by Doing Less | The Philosophy of Slow Living
A growing group of people believes that we’re better off slowing down. This slower approach to life is known as ‘slow living.’ As a counter-movement, ‘slow living’ opposes the fast-paced life that aims for many experiences in a short time, as living at high speed means we’re often living hastily, chaotically, superficially, and with a lack of appreciation of the moment. Life in a 'degrowth' economy, and why you might actually enjoy it
What does genuine economic progress look like? The orthodox answer is that a bigger economy is always better, but this idea is increasingly strained by the knowledge that, on a finite planet, the economy…

Degrowth is an idea that critiques the global capitalist system which pursues growth at all costs, causing human exploitation and environmental destruction. The degrowth movement of activists and researchers advocates for societies that prioritize social and ecological well-being instead of corporate profits, over-production and excess consumption. This requires radical redistribution, reduction in the material size of the global economy, and a shift in common values towards care, solidarity and autonomy. Degrowth means transforming societies to ensure environmental justice and a good life for all within planetary boundaries.

“Very serious people often tell us that the word “degrowth” is too negative. People like happy, positive, nice things. Sure, the economy is systematically destroying life on earth. But nobody wants to degrow it. Instead, these critics prefer words like “post-growth,” “a-growth,” “re-growth”, even the mythical “green growth.” They want to create a circular economy, […]
