Palo Alto Networks announces the third addition to its existing education portfolio, commemorates the launch with a new office opening in Melbourne
Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ: PANW), the global cybersecurity leader, announced today the launch of CyberFit Nation, a free online educational program that addresses the unique cybersecurity learning needs of key stakeholder groups, from board directors to school children, to make each day safer and more secure than the one before.
Education and awareness of our digital safety and well-being have never been more important. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) reported a 13% increase in the number of cybercrime reports it received in the last year, equating to one report of a cyberattack every eight minutes.
The first of its kind in Australia, CyberFit Nation is the third addition to Palo Alto Networks’ comprehensive education portfolio that aims to make cybersecurity education accessible to all.

In just 25 minutes, this rapid-fire virtual session will cover key issues, including app permissions, scams and fakes.
Cybersecurity Fundamentals for SMEs & Startups: Online workshops to help owners, operators and managers implement pragmatic cybersecurity strategies to mitigate risks.
Cyber Safe Kids: A 30-minute interactive online session that provides children aged between five and 10 with the practical skills needed to protect themselves and others, and what it means to be a good digital citizen.
The introduction of CyberFit Nation follows the success of Cyber Security Academy and Cybersecurity Fundamentals.
While the former offers a vendor-neutral curriculum that aligns with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) frameworks for cybersecurity work roles, the latter is an introductory-level course suitable for anyone from high school age and above that breaks down the cybersecurity fundamentals (including cloud and network security) into easily digestible, two-hour modules.
“Everyone has the right to feel safe and be safe online. Yet today, no individual or business is ever truly safe from the threat of a cyberattack,” said Simon Green, president for Asia-Pacific and Japan, Palo Alto Networks.”

Fresh fruits, canned goods, and reusable bags are the marks of any average grocery store, but what if instead that grocery shopping experience came to you?
The Works’ grocery store on wheels, Mobile Grocer, hit the streets in North Memphis for the first time Wednesday.
“I feel like a kid on Christmas, like a 6-year-old, with all of the gifts,” The Works CEO Roshun Austin said. “This is a dream in that way because for a long time… we were trying to find ways for not only our staff members and neighbors to have access [to groceries].”
While the routes are still being finalized, Austin said the truck will definitely serve the Klondike, Frayser, Smokey City, and North Memphis areas. The Works will also partner with hyperlocal organizations to determine the best stops for the truck.

“Everything we do is about a partnership with groups and neighbors, so we’d like the voices of people who live in this place,” Austin said.
The Works is a community development corporation serving the Memphis community by offering affordable housing and social services.
BJ Adams was hired by The Works last year to drive the Mobile Grocer. After supply chain problems delayed the project since 2020, Adams is happy to get on the road to bring fresh foods to neighborhoods without grocery stores.
“We’re just trying to find out exactly what areas we want to target first,” Adams said. “Once we get the routes configured, then we’ll do about two hours in each location… We’re going to hit some senior living facilities, maybe some areas where you don’t really have access to fruits and vegetables, as well.”
The roughly 20-foot trailer is stocked wall-to-wall with every type of grocery item one might need: bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, canned foods, plates, and cups. It also opens from the back to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In 2010, The Works opened the South Memphis Farmers Market to fulfill a pillar of its South Memphis Revitalization Action Plan, which emphasizes healthy living by improving access to healthy foods in the community. The seasonal market with local vendors then expanded to become the brick-and-mortar store The Grocer at 1400 Mississippi Blvd.

Rick James, owner and CEO of Castle Retail Group — the group behind stores including High Point Grocery and South Point Grocery, acts as The Works’ wholesaler. James and Austin have been working together for more than a decade on addressing food deserts in Memphis.
“To see it, you know, see it actually come off of a sheet of paper and sitting in this parking lot is great, but the value of it being able to move throughout the city and get into neighborhoods, especially where access is limited because of transportation problems,” James said. “That’s one of the biggest things for seniors in the city is they rely on somebody else for transportation, or they rely on mass transit, which is very time-consuming, but to be able to have this show up at a parking lot in their building is just really going to be terrific.”

Rodgers sits one out
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t practice Wednesday.
However the reigning MVP still expects to play Sunday after hurting his thumb on an unsuccessful desperation pass attempt that ended their loss to the New York Giants in London.
“The thumb’s all right,” Rodgers said. “It was nice to get a day off today, do a little rehab. But I’ll try and get back out there and practice tomorrow and see how it feels and be fine by Sunday, I’m sure.”

If you’ve got a bunch of Gameboy and Gameboy Advance cartridges lying around and a Steam Deck (I’m jealous), you might be in luck if you’re looking to bring the two together.
Epilogue is a tech company that, back in 2021, released a nifty little gadget called the GB Operator, which when connected to a computer can run any Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance game through their own homebrew emulator.
The really neat thing is that while you can play the game through the emulator, you can also save your progress and have that progress stay on the cartridge meaning that if you decide to go back to an official console, you won’t lose any progress.
The Epilogue GB Operator and Studio can also be used to easily write homebrew games onto physical cartridges too, meaning it’s a good way for indie developers dabbling in demakes and retro-style games to simply make physical copies of them.
This gadget was released in 2021, so why the hell am I talking about it now? WELL! Epilogue themselves posted an update on their Twitter announcing that after much testing, the GB Operator and Operator app are “fully compatible with Steam OS” with Gameboy games able to run “impeccably” on the Steam Deck.

So get this, folks: those little games that you could play as a kid on the go? You can now play them on the go again. But this time? It’s on something bigger and bustier.
While there is something inherently funny about making something that was already portable once again portable but with a different flavour, this is still pretty neat. While still portable like they literally always were, your old Gameboy games can also now be played on a reasonably larger screen thanks to the GB Operator.
The Steam Deck’s emulation capabilities continue to expand here, which is very cool to see. From this to the ability to recreate the experience of playing WiiU and 3DS in probably the most accurate way to date, it’s clear that the Steam Deck is becoming the most flexible console out there.

Mastercard has outlined five key crypto areas it is working on in order to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay.” A Mastercard executive opined: “Someday soon, the ability to own and spend a digital currency could be as seamless as making a contactless card payment.”
Mastercard Focusing on 5 Major Areas Covering Crypto, Metaverse, and NFTs
Mastercard highlighted on Wednesday five different areas it is working on in order to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay.”
Raj Dhamodharan, executive vice president of Digital Asset and Blockchain Products & Digital Partnerships at Mastercard, explained: “Digital assets like cryptocurrencies and central bank digital currencies [CBDCs] have the potential to transform the financial system’s infrastructure.” He added that non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain gaming, and metaverse experiences “could change how consumers shop and communicate.”
The executive opined:
Someday soon, the ability to own and spend a digital currency could be as seamless as making a contactless card payment.
Dhamodharan proceeded to outline five key areas that Mastercard is working on to make this happen. The first area is crypto cards. He detailed that Mastercard already announced dozens of new crypto card programs globally this year. For example, in the U.S., the payments giant worked with Gemini on a credit card that pays rewards in cryptocurrencies. In Argentina, the company launched a prepaid card with Binance. In Europe, Mastercard recently announced the world’s first physical debit card that can be customized to include a customer’s NFT avatar.
The second area is services for crypto. Noting that “Mastercard is a provider of cybersecurity, digital ID, advisory and open banking services to tens of thousands of financial institutions,” Dhamodharan said the company is going to use the same tools “to provide more support to crypto players and issuers.” Mastercard has expanded its consulting work to include a dedicated crypto practice and it completed the purchase of Ciphertrace last year. The company will soon launch a new crypto monitoring product called Crypto Secure.
The third area is payments. “We’ve partnered with a handful of top-tier crypto-focused companies — including Paxos, Circle, Evolve and Uphold — to develop ways for people to quickly convert their crypto to fiat to make payments. This work will support current and future crypto card partnerships,” the executive detailed.
Noting that the fourth area focuses on crypto on the Mastercard networks, Dhamodharan emphasized:
An important way to expand choice for people is to bring certain Mastercard-approved digital assets onto our networks, a plan we announced last year that continues to move forward.
The fifth area concerns the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Mastercard is working to grow its partnerships to support NFTs and the metaverse, Dhamodharan explained. For example, Coinbase users can now pay for NFTs with Mastercard.
In conclusion, the Mastercard executive noted that the payments giant already operates “a trusted global network that enables payments with a single tap or click.” He added, “That’s what the crypto economy needs to support the next million users — or the next billion,” elaborating:
We’re excited to prioritize these core areas to give people more access to the crypto ecosystem and help it keep innovating and growing.

MUMBAI, Oct 14 (Reuters) – The Indian rupee is tipped to strengthen versus the U.S. currency on Friday after the dollar’s rally following higher-than-expected U.S. inflation data proved short lived.
The rupee is expected at around 82.20 in early trading, up from 82.3450 in the previous session.
The dollar index dropped in Asia trading to 112.22 after having reached almost 114 immediately into the data.

U.S headline consumer prices increased more than expected in September fuelling underlying inflation pressures, making it almost certain that the U.S. Federal Reserve will deliver another 75-basis-point rate increase at next month’s policy meeting. read more
Further, the odds of an additional 75 bps rate hike in December climbed to 2-in-3, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. This probability was less than 10% a week back.
More sustained core U.S. services pressure could see the Fed having to contemplate another 75 bps hike in December against our current base case of 50 bps, Morgan Stanley said in a note.
The dollar advanced against its major peers soon after the data, while U.S. equity futures plunged and Treasury yields rose.
However, U.S. equity futures and the dollar witnessed an intraday turnaround while Treasury yield came off highs. Analysts attributed the surprising turnaround to position adjustments and the possibility that decline in U.S. shares was overdone.
The USD/INR 1-month non-deliverable forward jumped to 83 initially, but similar to the dollar index, retreated to near 82.50.
The rupee will open at near its weekly high of around 82.15-82.17 and it “would not be a surprise” if the initial uptick does not sustain, a trader at a Mumbai-based bank said.
The trader pointed to likely dollar buying interest from importers and to oil prices. Brent crude rose more than 2% on Thursday, inching higher in Asia to $94.70. read more

Businesses should rethink the way staff use their time in offices, says the boss of the messaging platform Slack.
With the rise of hybrid working, lots of people now divide their working week between home and going into their workplace.
But being in the office should be an opportunity to do things that cannot be done at home, argues Stewart Butterfield, Slack’s chief executive.
Sitting at a desk with headphones on is not one of them, he says.
Of course the boss of an online messaging platform is not going to go so far as to say staff should leave their laptops at home, but he does say it would “put a strong line in the sand about what the purpose is of getting together”.
Slack has headquarters in the US, Canada, Japan, Australia and India.
Reflecting on its offices before the pandemic, Mr Butterfield says: “The 80% of the floor space that we dedicated to kind of factory-farm, battery-chicken housing for people to use their desks all by themselves and listen to their headphones, and not talk to anyone else… was a bit of a waste.”
A comfortable environment

Ongoing renovations are gearing Slack workspace more towards that of a social club, he says, because he wants people to come to work to collaborate and build relationships face-to-face.
“The best thing we can do is create a comfortable environment for people to come together and actually enjoy themselves,” he says.
He accepts that some people will choose to work full time in the office because they either cannot or do not want to work from home, and also thinks that young people starting their careers generally prefer to be in the office with their peers.
“It’s hard to imagine starting your career fresh out of university, and not going to the office, and not being able to meet all these people in person,” he says.
“But I think the the majority of knowledge workers, over time, will settle into some sort of pattern of regular intervals of getting together.”
‘Should have been an email’
Mr Butterfield is really not a big fan of meetings.
He champions Amazon’s idea, introduced by Jeff Bezos, where each attendee reads a six-page memo at the start of a meeting as a briefing note, rather than sitting through PowerPoint presentations.
“There probably are 20% or 30% (of meetings) that don’t actually have to be meetings, that would be more effective with written communication,” he says, in a nod to the internet meme “this meeting should have been an email”.
He also backs what he calls “asynchronous work” – minimising the need to share information in real time.
“So for example, people going around the room and giving their status update, if you can do that asynchronously, and I can record mine at 08:17, and then listen to yours at 09:53 or whatever – that is itself worth a lot,” he says.
“I think the place for most teams to invest in is how they do asynchronous work, because we’re humans.”

Land and resort sales are booming for Dream Vacations and CruiseOne agencies, up more than 50% this year compared with 2019, the franchisor said.
Dream Vacations and CruiseOne said resort sales are surpassing prepandemic levels, while its land business in general continues to grow. It attributed the growth to marketing programs and support offered to franchisees, including a “land brochure,” social media assets and more.
The franchisor has been putting an increased emphasis on land vacations in recent years and even introduced the Dream Vacations moniker in 2016 partly because of the segment’s growth among agents.
The growth in land and resort sales was announced at the Dream Vacations and CruiseOne Land Summit at the Dreams Onyx in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which was co-hosted by Apple Leisure Group and AMResorts. The four-day training event drew more than 120 advisors.

The Greater Coachella Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce shared the following on their Facebook page regarding Huerta’s award, “Our IMPACTO! Award honoree Dolores Huerta is unable to join us next week but will still be honored. She is healthy and traveling the country continuing her farmworker advocacy and empowering the people. We love this incredible fierce warrior and will continue to support her and the Dolores Huerta Foundation mission.”
In the sports arena, Rosie Casals, U.S. Open Doubles Champion will receive the Pionera Award.
Coach Joel Diaz, world champion boxing trainer from Indio, will receive tonight’s Community Hero award.
Artist and muralist Michael Angelo Hernandez will receive the Kahlo-Rivera Award for his creative contributions to the valley.

Massachusetts has contracted with an equipment testing lab and financial auditing firm to help meet an early 2023 sports betting launch timeline.
Testing lab GLI and financial firm RSM were selected for the contracts, Mass Gaming Commission Executive Director Karen Wells told the commission at its Thursday meeting. She said the contracts are “critical” for meeting the timeline set by the MGC at its meeting on Oct. 7.
Under the timeline, retail sports betting would launch in late January ahead of the Super Bowl. Mobile sports betting would launch in early March.
“It is going to be huge for our implementation timeline,” she told the MGC today. “I know the team is really excited to have this level of help and this level of professionalism.”
GLI, or Gaming Labs International, has been under contract for testing of the commonwealth’s casino equipment for years. Wells suggested the MGC contract with GLI on sports betting testing standards and internal controls soon after the commonwealth’s sports betting law was signed on Aug. 10.
RSM is a multinational accounting firm that assists states across the US. In Massachusetts, Wells said the firm will help with the MGC’s background review of sports betting applications, case management, financial suitability, and more.
Oct. 17 Deadline Looms For Potential Sports Betting Operators
For potential retail and mobile sports betting applicants, the next step on the timeline is turning in a required “scoping study” form on Oct. 17. The survey, released by the MGC on Oct. 7, will give the commission its first look at companies vying for a sport in the Bay State market.
MGC Chair Cathy Judd-Stein reminded potential applicants of next week’s deadline at today’s meeting.
“The scoping survey is part of the application for Category 1, 2, and 3 operator licenses. Prospective operators must meet this deadline. Vendors will eventually be required to fill this survey out as well, but are not subject to the same deadline,” Judd-Stein said.
A draft sports betting operator application approved by the MGC last week has an Oct. 17 deadline for public comment. The ultimate due date for those applications is expected to be sometime in late November.
The MGC suggested today that potential applicants review the draft and begin compiling documents that they will likely need to submit as part of the application process.
According to Judd-Stein, “We recommend that the interested applicants begin to review and pull materials together.”

The other shoe has finally dropped in the mystery of just what the hell the UFC was thinking when they closed the doors of their Apex facility to media and the public for UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Yan earlier this October.
The basic motivations behind the decision became clear on the night of the event itself, when—despite heavy denials in the days prior—Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was spotted sitting cageside as one of a very select few people in attendance. Whether one of the world’s richest men had, in fact, rented out the whole event like a it was a laser-tag birthday party or the UFC had simply decided to gift him with sole occupancy was purely pedantic. Whatever the case, the Endeavor-owned fight promotion had given itself over to one high profile guest.
Now we know why.
The UFC announced on Thursday, October 13th, that they have officially partnered with Zuckerberg’s Meta company to deliver on-demand VR MMA events. In the near future fans will be able to access VR feeds of MMA cards on the Fight Pass platform (h/t MMA Fighting).
“We are excited to offer an unprecedented level of engagement for Fight Pass subscribers and MMA fans around the world by producing a live MMA event in virtual reality,” Crowley Sullivan, Fight Pass vice president and general manager is quoted as saying. “With Meta providing the VR platform and YBVR lending their production expertise, we’re confident this will be a great experience for fight fans.”
The first event to be hosted via this new platform will be LFA 144: Gafurov vs. Silva. Which can be accessed through the Meta Horizon Worlds app. That card takes place this Friday, October 14th, in Sioux Falls, SD. Fans who sign up for the virtual reality feed will apparently get access to a 180 degree panorama view of the fight fight card, and the ability to see and chat with other VR fans live. No word yet on what pricing will look like for future VR events.
The move has apparently been a long-term goal of Dana White’s. As far back as February, the UFC President was teasing his hopes for bringing the UFC to virtual reality sometime in the near future.
“We’re looking to do a fight in the Metaverse,” White enthused. “We’ve been working on it for a while. It’ll be a live fight, an actual fight that takes place inside the metaverse.”
“It’d be kids at home, you put on your (goggles) and you can (get) up and go walk around. We’re still working it out, but yeah, it’ll be soon. We’ll be doing a fight in the metaverse. It’ll be a real fight.”

Batman (1966) holds a strange place in popular culture, remembered (sometimes fondly) for its campy tone, farcical stories, and goofy action. Despite the many iconic elements, phrases, and action shots of the show remaining a staple of pop culture and the subject of many jokes, many people don’t remember that this was the point.
Yes, Batman was silly, but it was never meant to be taken seriously. The show is a comedy disguised as an action superhero series, and no element of the show makes that clearer than the many weird gadgets Adam West and Burt Ward’s Batman and Robin used. From shields, to lasers, to shark-repellent spray, every gadget featured Batman’s signature logo and motif.
10/10 Batman’s Portable Laser Gun Was For All Purposes
Batman’s Laser Gun (one of the few items in his toolkit without a “Bat” prefix) is one of his most useful gadgets. In the pilot episode alone, he uses it no less than three times, from lighting a fuse, to cutting through steel bars on a window, to melting the firing pin of a revolver. The laser gun became the ace up Batman’s sleeve, and its ridiculous usability was indicative of the show’s comedic style.
What’s even more surprising than a 1960s Batman having a portable, lightweight, high-powered laser is the fact that, unlike some of Batman’s older gadgets, the laser gun has remained a staple of Batman’s inventory. Although it isn’t as portrayed as outlandishly, Batman still keeps laser-based tools, especially laser cutters, in his utility belt to this day.
9/10 The Anti-Hypnotic Bat Reflector Is Perfectly In Line With The Show’s Tone
This gadget is pure Silver Age nonsense, and the show takes this ridiculous deus ex machina and runs with it. Why does Batman have a mirror on his person specifically designed to counter the Mad Hatter? Because why not!
Batman’s high-tech mirror demonstrates the show’s angle on the old “prep time” argument. The idea that Batman could defeat anyone with enough prep time remains true here, but instead of a cool, action-packed portrayal, it’s portrayed as silly, even somewhat slapdash, to get laughs.
8/10 Batman Carries A Key To Wayne Manor (Just In Case)
Once again, Batman‘s take on the idea of the always-prepared Batman is played for laughs, rather than showing a dangerous and shadowy vigilante. In the classic episode “Joker’s Provokers,” Joker ties Batman to a giant key duplicator, intending to kill him by running him through the machine.
However, Joker is foiled when Batman throws his spare key into the machine, buying him time to escape. Adam West’s Batman truly is prepared for everything, just like the comics’ Batman, but his preparations also include simply carrying a spare key in case he gets locked out of his mansion. In a series where the absurd is often presented as mundane, the mundane becomes absurd and increases the hilarity.
7/10 The Bat-Turn Lever Made For One Of The Shows Most Iconic Shots
What with Batman and Robin using an atomic-powered car with a rocket engine, a simple emergency break wouldn’t be enough to pull off high-speed turns. That’s where the Emergency-Bat-Turn-Lever comes into play. First, it releases parachutes to help slow the car before braking and allowing for a full 180-degree turn.
While it does, in a way, make sense that West’s sleek and powerful Batmobile would need a special way to turn, Batman ’66 gave it its own unique flavor. The over-the-top execution makes for a combination of a great action scene, and laugh-out-loud ridiculousness.
6/10 Batman Used Bat-Acillin For Headaches And Bullet Wounds
The modern Batman typically fixes his injuries on the fly with futuristic first-aid equipment or endures long enough to make it back to the Batcave, where Alfred can stitch him up. Adam West’s Batman, however, had a much better way to handle any combat injuries: Bat-Acillin
Bat-Acillin makes video game health packs blush, a simple lozenge that allows whoever takes it to instantly recover from any sickness or wound. In the Western-inspired episode “It’s How You Play The Game,” Robin is shot in the heel, and Batman gives him some Bat-Acillin. In the very next scene, Robin is up and about, jumping and clicking his heels as if it never happened. It’s absolutely ludicrous, but 100% fits in Batman‘s world.
5/10 The Bat-Ray Brought Any High-Speed Chase To A Close
Batman ’66 sure did love its car chases, and the Bat-Ray was Batman’s one-stop shop for ending them. Since Batman is strictly a non-lethal hero, he didn’t deploy any Mad Max or Fast and Furious tricks to get the upper hand. Batman used his Bat-Ray, a sort of ion/emp laser beam that disabled the villain’s vehicle.
How does this work without disabling the Batmobile, and why does it shoot out of the headlights of all things? In perfect Batman ’66 fashion, the series never bothers to explain how it works; it just shows off its flashy toy. The fact that its very first use results in an explosive crash really demonstrates the mix of silliness and awesome action that the series is famous for.
4/10 The Batmobile’s Anti-Theft Activator Is Goofy In All The Right Ways
Today, Batman uses everything from biometric scanners to an electric field to protect the Batmobile from theft, but that wasn’t so easy with an open-top Batmobile back in 1966. Instead, in the very first episode, when the Riddler tries to steal the Batmobile, Batman’s theft prevention methods are put on full display.
Robin disguises the anti-theft activator as the ignition, so when Riddler attempts to drive away with his prize, he instead sets off fireworks. Batman’s ingenious theft protection is to set off fireworks to allow anyone to track a stolen Batmobile. It’s ridiculous, but it’s funny in just the right way, and while it may be silly, it was effective, forcing Riddler to abandon his attempts.
3/10 Batman And Robin’s Bat-Shields Defy All Logic
Since Batman doesn’t use guns, he has to take steps to nullify the advantages guns give his opponents. Sometimes, he uses his Batarangs to knock them away, smoke bombs to block enemies’ sights, or (in the Arkham series) he disables them with advanced tech, but in Batman ’66, it got pretty silly, even by the silly standards of the show.
Batman and Robin used portable shields made of bulletproof glass that Batman kept in his utility belt. How, exactly, did Batman break the laws of physics, and not the glass, to store a collapsible shield in his belt? No idea, but watching it makes for a great comedic moment.
2/10 Batman And Robin’s Bat-Poles Were The First Sign Of The Silliness
In the pilot episode, before Batman and Robin even appeared in their costumes, one of the very first signs of the behavior of the Dynamic Duo was the Bat-Poles, and they made it crystal clear just how campy of a show the audience was in for.
The Bat-Poles are, inexplicably and hilariously, clearly labeled as the “Bat-Poles” that lead into the Batcave, and are also marked specifically for Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. So, if anyone (such as Aunt Harriet) happened to somehow accidentally open the secret entrance, there would be no possible deniability of its purpose, and that just makes it funnier. Batman and Robin always leave the poles already changed into their costumes, however that works.
1/10 Batman: The Movie’s Bat-Shark-Repellent Is Iconic
Batman: The Movie is nonsensical even by the standards of the show. But it is admirable that it manages to distill every aspect of the show into a film, utilizing famous villains from the original series like Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman, and famously contains some memorable moments.
Really, what would any discussion of Adam West’s Batman be without Bat-Shark-Repellent? The gadget is the epitome of the show’s hilarious take on the over-prepared Batman, and the fact that the shark then falls back into the ocean and explodes is the perfect encapsulation of the series’ over-the-top comedy.

Rapper-turned-business tycoon Rick Ross has joined Hempacco Co. Inc. to launch his brand of Hemp Hop Smokables.
With the CEO of Rap Snacks Inc. James Lindsay joining him as founder, Rick Ross is entering the $1-trillion hemp industry. Hemp Hop will offer hemp cigarettes, smoking paper and other alternatives to nicotine. The venture could give Hip-Hop’s biggest boss a new theme song to live by, Rich Life Forever.
The Founding of Hemp Hop
Hempacco’s co-founder and chief marketing officer Jorge Olsen announced the partnership at Ross’ Boss Up Conference which took place Sept. 17-19.
“We’re ready to start offering Hemp Hop Hemp Cigarettes to wholesale distributors,” Olson said.
“With Rick Ross and James Lindsay spearheading the sales, distribution and marketing, it will be a wonderful consumer experience for the consumers.”
Ross took to Instagram on Sept. 22 to announce the alliance between the powerhouses of the hemp industry.
“This Hemp Hop right here,” said Ross. “This [is] the combination of the game right here – something [that is] some of the finest, healthiest rollups.”
James Lindsay is also in the mix. Lindsay–the highly-successful CEO of Rap Snacks–has a proven track record of teaming up with the rap industry’s biggest names such as Migos, Cardi B and Lil Boosie. Lindsay is a wholesale distribution veteran who is adding Rick Ross to his resume.
“It’s fantastic to team up with my partner Rick Ross to mentor Black entrepreneurs wanting to scale their business and become mentors to the new generation of your business leaders,” said Lindsay. “Sculpting and participating in the success of others is one of my big passions.”
Hempacco, Hemp Hop Partnership
The Hemp Hop Smokables brand and Hempacco agreed to a 50/50 joint venture. The new line plans to offer a variety of products such as Hemp Hop wraps, CBD smokables and Delta 8 smokes.
Hempacco’s trademark phrase is “Disrupting Tobacco,” and together, they are focused on “developing, manufacturing and marketing an expanding consumer good line of CBD hemp functional cigarettes and hemp wrap rolling papers.”
But Hempacco’s ambition didn’t start–and it’s not ending–with Rick Ross
Hempacco’s Plan to Unveil New Crypto
The San Diego-based cannabis brand has shown it’s serious about accelerating commercial growth.
Until this year, Hempacco’s success didn’t escape the confines of the Southern California region. But that is no longer the case.
Hempacco was commissioned to produce 250,000 packs of 20 CBD hemp cigarettes for the Ace & Axle brand in June 2021. In January 2022, they entered a joint venture with Cheech and Chong’s Cannabis Company.
Hempacco Co. raised $6 million in August 2022 with its Initial Public Offering (IPO) to finance further distribution nationwide. And now this partnership with Wingstop franchise’s biggest boss, Rick Ross.
Next on Hempacco’s to-do list is releasing a cryptocurrency, according to Crypto Coin Opps.
“We will soon accept crypto in our store and might create our own crypto,” said Jorge Olsen. “More as a club style than a currency for trading.”
It’s not confirmed but a company executive said the accepted cryptocurrencies will likely include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Shiba Inu, Solana, LiteCoin and DOGE.
An ICO or IDO launch for a Hempacco cryptocurrency will also occur and it’s to be announced before the year’s end.
“It’s suggested that the launching of a legitimate new cryptocurrency ICO or IDO by Hempacco is one that should be watched for,” according to Crypto Coin Opps. “The investment could see a 10x return in [a] fairly short time as the Hemp products company has all the tools necessary to create brand popularity and use of their own token.”
This isn’t surprising given the rapid decline of tobacco use in the United States–along with the rapid increase of CBD, marijuana and hemp use.
Hempacco is currently traded on the S&P 500 stock market and is one of only two companies in San Diego that successfully launched an IPO in 2022.
In short, it’s like Rick Ross said on Instagram, “It’s about doing something that lasts forever…it’s history.”

WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by Donald Trump’s supporters voted unanimously on Thursday to subpoena the former president, a move that could lead to criminal charges if he does not comply.
The House select committee’s seven Democratic and two Republican members voted 9-0 in favor of issuing a subpoena for Trump to provide documents and testimony under oath in connection with the storming of the Capitol.
“He must be accountable. He is required to answer for his actions. He is required to answer for those police officers who put their lives and bodies on the line to defend our democracy. He is required to answer to those millions of Americans whose votes he wanted to throw out as part of his scheme to remain in power,” the panel’s Democratic chairman, Representative Bennie Thompson, said.

The vote came after the committee spent more than two hours making its case – via statements from members, documents, and recorded testimony – that Trump planned to deny his 2020 election defeat in advance, failed to call off the thousands of supporters who stormed the Capitol, and followed through with his false claims that the election was stolen even as close advisers told him he had lost.
Federal law says that failure to comply with a congressional subpoena is a misdemeanor, punishable by one to 12 months imprisonment. If the select committee’s subpoena is ignored, the full House must vote on whether to make a referral to the Department of Justice, which has the authority to decide whether to bring charges.
LOOMING MID-TERMS
The subpoena is expected within days, and would typically give Trump a date by which he should comply. It was not clear when the full House – which is out of Washington until mid-November – could vote on whether to make a criminal referral.
Trump responded to the vote with angry comments on his social media service Truth Social. “Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country which, by the way, is doing very badly – A laughing stock all over the World?” he wrote.
One former Trump adviser, Steve Bannon, is due to be sentenced next week after a jury found him guilty of contempt of Congress charges for not complying with a committee subpoena. But the Justice Department declined to charge another, Mark Meadows, who the House had also suggested should be prosecuted.
Federal prosecutors are also investigating the former president’s removal of classified documents from the White House at the end of his term, and have warned that they believe they have not yet recovered all the documents taken.
The House select committee has been investigating the attack on the Capitol, which left more than 140 police officers injured and led to several deaths, for more than a year, interviewing over 1,000 witnesses.

Thompson said he recognized that subpoenaing a former president was a serious action, but argued that the stakes were high for the future of U.S. democracy.
Thursday’s meeting followed eight hearings earlier this year and one in July 2021. There were no live witnesses on Thursday, but the panel presented videotaped testimony to build a case that Trump’s efforts to overturn his November 2020 presidential election defeat constituted illegal conduct, far beyond normal politics.
FEARS OF VIOLENCE
The committee presented evidence from Secret Service agents and intelligence officials who said before Jan.6 that they expected violence at the pro-Trump rally and believed there were caches of weapons around Washington.
“Their plan is to literally kill people. Please please take this tip seriously and investigate further,” a Dec. 26 Secret Service email said.
Thursday’s vote could be the committee’s last public action before the Nov. 8 midterm elections that will determine whether President Joe Biden’s fellow Democrats or Trump’s Republicans control Congress.
The committee is also due to release a report on its findings within the coming weeks.
Representative Liz Cheney, the panel’s Republican vice chairperson, said the panel might ultimately decide to make a series of criminal referrals to the Department of Justice.
The hearings held this year may have convinced some Republicans that Trump bears some responsibility for the attack. A two-day Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Wednesday showed two in five Republicans view Trump as at least partly responsible for the attack.
Previous hearings focused on Trump’s inaction before and during the storming of the Capitol, his pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to deny Biden’s victory, militias whose members participated in the attack, and Trump’s interactions with close advisers questioning his false allegations of massive voter fraud.
The one-time reality television star has denied wrongdoing and hinted he will seek the White House again in 2024. He regularly holds rallies where he continues to claim falsely that he lost the election because of widespread fraud.
More than 880 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, with more than 400 guilty pleas so far.

More than 150 University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa students from a variety of majors took advantage of a rare opportunity to meet one-on-one with technology industry professionals from organizations such as Microsoft, Amazon, LinkedIn and Activision Blizzard, to learn about technology career opportunities.
The event on October 11, at Kuykendall Hall began with an introduction of more than 20 professionals, which included software engineers, company founders, business leaders and cybersecurity experts, followed by a one-hour mixer where students were able to chat face-to-face with the speakers.
The event was hosted by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) in UH Mānoa’s Shidler College of Business, Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mānoa, ThriveHI and Builders VC.
Amanda Nitta is a UH Mānoa senior majoring in computer science and data science, and vice president and chief of operations for the Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mānoa. Nitta was one of the event’s student organizers and gained knowledge about how to apply data science and management in a future career.
“This is a great opportunity for these students because of the fact that it gives exposure to what they are able to do, and be able to apply what they learned and see that they are not restricted to one thing such as software engineering,” Nitta said. “They have so many other capabilities within them to do interdisciplinary work and have different mindsets going into the workforce.”
Narrowing the pay gap
Kanaʻi Gooding is a computer science student and president of the Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mānoa. Gooding said many of the tech professionals featured at the event are remote workers for companies based on the continental U.S. He said there is a disparity between salaries offered by those companies and salaries offered by companies based in Hawaiʻi. Gooding’s goal for the event was to begin a dialogue to take steps forward so Hawaiʻi-based companies can match the salaries of their continental U.S.-based counterparts.
“This is just one of the many aspects that we are trying to attack the problem with,” Gooding said. “One of our big asks for the professionals here was, ‘Hey, we’re going to have the students ask you your salary. Please be ok with us asking and you answering.’ Hopefully that spreads loudly across the community.”
Creating a path into tech

Kevin Shin, a senior software engineer at LinkedIn, shared his manaʻo (thoughts and perspectives) with UH Mānoa’s current students. Shin graduated from UH Mānoa 2014 with a degree in mechanical engineering, before pursuing a graduate degree at Stanford University.
His goal for the event was “to let the students know that there is a path to tech and people from Hawaiʻi can make it. There are a bunch out here doing it.”
“Students at the University of Hawaiʻi are just as capable of taking on tech careers, including tech-centered entrepreneurship, as their mainland counterparts. Because of Hawaiʻi’s distance from major technological hubs, however, local students may be learning about these careers from the internet or other secondhand sources,” PACE Executive Director Sandra Fujiyama said. “PACE, along with ThriveHI, ACM@Mānoa and Builders VC, recognized the need to close that gap and connect students directly to people who know what it is to work in tech today.”

It feels like much of society is returning to normal after several challenging years of pandemic life, but the travel experience is markedly different. Sure, most countries have reopened their borders and the testing requirements are getting progressively more relaxed, but the actual act of booking your vacation is definitely not the same.

Here’s why I’m OK with using more credit card points than usual to fit a trip to Vietnam into my limited winter break.
The best value redemption is the one you actually book
With my fiancée set to wrap up a scuba dive master training program in Indonesia at the start of December, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to fly out and meet her in Southeast Asia. We settled on a two-week trip to Vietnam, a destination we’ve both been dreaming of ever since our trip in the fall of 2019 got canceled by a typhoon.
Our home airport of Miami doesn’t have any non-stop flights to Asia, so I knew I was looking at two stops minimum to get to Vietnam; three stops once we decided to start our trip around Da Nang as opposed to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city. But I’m not losing sleep over paying twice what I would’ve liked to for the routing we settled on.
Going straight from a cardiology exam to the airport is going to be stressful enough, and while I miss being on the road, I don’t necessarily miss 40-hour-long travel “days.” With less than two weeks on the ground after accounting for travel time, I wanted a lie-flat seat so I could arrive well-rested and enjoy this vacation as much as possible.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a single saver-level business class award seat on any airline despite hours of searching and getting very creative with the routing options I considered. I knew I was in trouble when I seriously considered paying 180,000 United miles for a one-way, three-stop Polaris business class routing. Here’s what I ended up booking instead:
Miami to Los Angeles in Jet Blue Mint for 72,000 JetBlue points (which I thankfully had lying around from my old Brex Card welcome bonus)
Los Angeles to Tokyo to Hanoi in Japan Airlines business class for ~$3,000, which I paid for with 150,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards® points earned from spending on my Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Freedom Unlimited® and a little over $700 cash (since this is a cash fare I’m crediting it to my American Airlines AAdvantage account, earning 9,700 AA miles in the process)
To get home, I booked my fiancée and myself in EVA Air business class from Hanoi to New York-JFK via Taipei. EVA is one of my all-time favorite airlines, so stay tuned for a full review of the inflight experience coming in January. I paid $5,476 for the two of us, and charged it to my Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card earning 10,952 miles (unfortunately, this fare was only available for booking directly through EVA; if I’d been able to book through Capital One Travel I would’ve earned 5x miles, or 27,380, instead of just 2x).

Fairfax County is converting all of its land use permitting, plan review, inspections and complaint systems to the Planning and Land Use System (PLUS) on Oct. 31. During the transition, all online application and review systems, including PLUS, FIDO, ProjectDox and PAWS will be unavailable beginning Friday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m. until Monday, Oct. 31.
Legacy systems (FIDO, ProjectDox and PAWS) will not return to use after the outage and will be replaced by PLUS beginning Oct. 31. The outage will impact customers conducting business with the agencies below. Each link contains information on what services will be available during the 10-day outage and how to plan ahead:

Northern Virginia leasing numbers soar
Office leasing increased moderately in Northern Virginia during the third quarter of 2023, with net absorption coming in at 55,031 square feet, according to Newmark’s latest office market report — a big jump compared to last year’s 35,731 square feet for the same period, Commercial Observer reported. The leasing numbers were buoyed by the 220,000-square-foot renewal of Hilton at 7930 Jones Branch Drive in Tysons, which represented the second-largest lease since the pandemic began. Right behind Hilton was Boeing’s 118,780-square-foot lease at 12701 Fair Lakes Circle in Fairfax. Some of the notable leases in the Q3 report include Maxar Technologies’ 99,659-square-foot renewal at 2325 Dulles Corner Boulevard in Herndon and General Services Administration’s 92,264-square-foot renewal in Rosslyn in Arlington County, a fellow Northern Virginia Economic Development Alliance jurisdiction. Two projects began construction during the third quarter: Fuse at Mason Square, a 360,000-square-foot development at 3351 Fairfax Drive, that will serve as R&D labs, classrooms and offices for George Mason University; and the 161,000-square-foot 1875 Reston Row Plaza, a mixed-use development in Reston. Stay tuned: Amazon’s HQ2 will bring more than 2 million square feet during the first quarter of 2023, the Newmark report says.

Cox Edge launched a new location in Merrifield, saying the expansion into Fairfax County extends its ability to deliver Edge compute resources to a ‘key tech region’ while also servicing the aerospace, cybersecurity, and healthcare industries in the NoVa area,” Data Center Dynamics reported. Cox Communications launched Cox Edge last year, launching in around a dozen U.S. markets. Cox Edge aims to offer Edge cloud services through a cloud-native stack and orchestration platform.

Ahead of its scheduled launch in December 2022, Rocket Lab delivered its Electron rocket Wednesday to Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, delmarvaNow reported. It will be Rocket Lab’s first lift-off from Virginia Space’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. The mission will deploy satellites for Herndon-based radio frequency geospatial analytics provider HawkEye 360. It will be the first of three Electron launches for HawkEye 360 in a contract that will see Rocket Lab deliver 15 satellites to low Earth orbit between late 2022 and 2024. These missions will grow HawkEye 360’s constellation of radio frequency monitoring satellites, enabling the company to better deliver precise mapping of radio frequency emissions anywhere in the world. The flight facility will continue with its packed schedule as Falls Church area-based Northrop Grumman is targeting liftoff of its Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft no earlier than on Nov. 6, from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. It represents the next commercial resupply services mission to deliver NASA science investigations, supplies, and equipment to the International Space Station. Accelerating communication
Tysons-based SpaceLink was tapped by NASA to conduct a study on the integration of commercial optical ground terminals into the space agency’s Near Space Network architecture to help with the orbital communication system’s commercialization, ExecutiveBiz reported. Under the contract from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, SpaceLink will craft a tracking and data relay satellite system-like capability on medium Earth orbit to ensure safe real-time data transmission. The effort looks to accelerate communication between spacecraft in orbit and ground users. The contract will entail SpaceLink demonstrating an end-to-end multi-source data transport at its gateway in the Mojave Desert to the space agency’s terrestrial network via Amazon Web Services‘ cloud infrastructure.
Readiness against evolving global threats
Reston-based Leidos won a $1.5 billion contract to support the Department of Defense with technology to enhance its Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) missions, Virginia Business reported. “In today’s battlefield, the command who has actionable multi- and cross-domain data fastest is the one with the high ground,” Leidos Defense Group President Gerry Fasano said. “Leidos has finely tuned our portfolio of expertise and developed a dynamic enterprise suite of C5ISR solutions, including Joint All-Domain Command and Control tools, to ensure our warfighters exploit state-of-the-art technology to maintain their decisive advantage and enable joint synergy for operational superiority. We are honored to support this critical mission, providing readiness against evolving global threats.”
Logical acquisition
Reston-based ScienceLogic, an IT management company, acquired Santa Clara, Calif.-based Zebrium, a machine learning analytics firm. Zebrium’s technology helps IT operators figure out the causes of difficult application problems. “We understand that at the end of the day, customers care about a few core things. Among those are making sense of drastically increased amounts of data, maintaining a quick time to resolution, and focusing on customer experience,” said Mike Nappi, chief product officer at ScienceLogic. “Our acquisition of Zebrium has its genesis in those customer mandates.” Potomac Tech Wire carried the release.
Securing telework environments
Reston-based Science Applications International Corp. and Florida-based SecureXperts partnered to build platforms for telework and alternative work environments that meet federal requirements for ensuring the security of the Department of Defense’s classified documents, reported ExecutiveBiz. “Together, SAIC and SecureXperts bring unique skills and expertise that will support the growing demand for services to protect intelligence users that store, process and transmit high risk data from telework and alternative work environments,” Vernon Saunders, senior vice president for the national intelligence community business at SAIC.

NEW YORK — Game 2 of the ALDS matchup between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians has been postponed due to rain and moved to Friday, MLB announced. First pitch was originally scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET Thursday night, though the forecast calls for rain most of the day Thursday and continuing into the early morning hours Friday. Instead, Game 2 will now be played Friday at 1:07 p.m. ET (still airing on TBS).
Here is Thursday’s weather forecast around Game 2’s original scheduled start time (via CBS News New York). The heaviest rain is expected to hit New York right around what would’ve been first pitch.

The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies waited out a three-hour rain delay prior to playing Game 2 on Wednesday, though the Yankees and Guardians do not have a similar playable window coming their way Thursday, so the game was postponed.
Friday was originally an ALDS off-day, so rescheduling Game 2 was a piece of cake. However, the postponement does force the two teams to play Games 2-5 on four consecutive days (if Games 4 and 5 are necessary). Friday was the final scheduled off-day in the series. Here’s how the Game 2 postponement impact each team’s pitching plans.
The Yankees won Game 1 behind Gerrit Cole and Anthony Rizzo. They lead the best-of-five series 1-0. Game 2’s scheduled starters are All-Star lefty Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.44 ERA) and 2020 AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber (13-8, 2.88 ERA).

Phil Avery, 50, won the Hawthorn Amateurs‘ reserves best and fairest in 2022. His son Eammon, 21, won the seniors best and fairest. And it’s not the first son Phil has played with, writes PAUL AMY.
An encouraging wife. A dedication to fitness. “Gadget arms’’. “Cat-like features’’. A rebuilding club. A league medal. A premiership. And sons driving him to play “the long game’’.
They’re all elements of Phil Avery’s many seasons in senior football.
Combined, they form a remarkable journey at a club in the lower reaches of amateur ranks.
In the year he turned 50, his story made for history at Hawthorn Amateurs.
Avery won the best and fairest for the reserves – and his son Eamonn, 21, won the best and fairest for the seniors.
They played together in the senior side during the season.
Last Friday night they stood together as the major trophy winners for the men’s teams.
“It’s unprecedented, I reckon,’’ Hawthorn Amateurs president Sam Waldron says of the prospect of gold-leaf lettering going on the honour board for father and son in the same year.
“I’ve never heard of it happening anywhere. It was a special thing for them to play a couple of senior games together. How cool to play footy with your dad … and then it goes to another level when they both win a B & F.’’
Former president Ed Sill calls it a “remarkable achievement, one of the best things about the 2022 footy season’’.
Avery says he was “speechless’’ when he and Eamonn topped the vote counts. He did it despite playing only nine games in the reserves.
“I still find it hard when people reach out to say congratulations – it’s one of those things you’ll talk about in 10, 20, 30 years,’’ he says. “Very proud.’’
Hawks coach Mark Murray reckons Avery deserves an award just for being able to play senior football at age 50.
“It’s crazy,’’ he says. “I’m 50 years old as well. To think he was able to play in our senior team and hold his own, yeah, crazy.’’
Sill, now president of Box Hill Hawks in the VFL, is enjoying Phil Avery’s long stay in amateur football.
They go back a long way.
Sill was part of the group that brought the club out of recess as Hawthorn Amateurs in 1995; as Hawthorn Citizens, it folded in 1989 due to a lack of numbers.
Avery had been playing at Bulleen United (now Manningham Cobras), but he knew some people involved with rebuilding ‘Citzs’, he lived close to the ground and he decided to make a move to Rathmines Road Reserve in 1996.
Bar the Covid year of 2020, he has not missed a season since.
The club quickly saw it had a good footballer.
In his first year Avery won the best and fairest.
In his third year he claimed the club and competition best and fairests, and played in the senior premiership team.
By 1999 he was captain.
More accolades came to him in future years, notably life membership and selection in the 20-year team, as well as off-field roles, including football director and committee member.
Sill says Avery was an excellent player.
“He had catlike features, Phil,’’ he says. “He could hit, bounce and run. He’s never going to be defined as the best kick to ever pull on a boot – he has his own unique style – but he always had great athleticism.’’
Hawks coach Mark Murray notes the “gadget arms’’ that allow Avery to spoil and then swoop on the ball.
Avery says age is starting to make greater demands on his body. To meet them he continues to run and cycle, figuring he can get through a game of football if he stays “half-fit’’.
“You get a few more hamstrings than when you were younger, but I haven‘t had any of those big injuries, like an ACL,’’ Avery, a manager at the Australian Catholic University, says.
“About 15 years ago I landed on my coccyx – if you’ve never done that before, it bloody hurts – and I’ve lost count of how many breaks I’ve had on my fingers. Overall I’ve been pretty lucky.’’
He hopes his luck holds. He intends to be around for a while; he has another son he wants to play with at Hawthorn Amateurs.

For all his awards, Phil Avery regards playing with two of his four boys as his greatest accomplishment in football.
It happened for the first time in 2016, when he lined up with his eldest lad, Moss, in the reserves, father presenting son with his jumper after selection.
A couple of seasons later he ran out with Eamonn, who, like his father, has developed into a defender.
This year Phil Avery answered the call to play in the seniors when injuries set in and coach Murray needed to bolster his backline.
Murray also promoted his veteran to the top team for his 300th game in the final round of the season.
The selection was based on merit, he says. “He just happened to be the next player in line,’’ Murray says.
Eamonn, 21, was again alongside him (Ed Sill watched on and says Avery, even at age 50, showed he was still a decent Division 3 amateur player).
Avery sees similarities in the way he and Eamonn play.
“We try to get the ball to the ground and run away – hopefully,’’ he says.
“He was always a bit smaller than the other boys. He’s probably 6’3 now and he’s got stronger, filled into his body. He’s turned into a good player.’’
A VAFA Division 3 team-of-the-year player, in fact; that was in 2021, when he slotted in at full back.
“He’s like a more athletic version of his dad,’’ Murray says of Eamonn. “He gets all the big jobs and he does them well. He’s got a lot of good footy in him.’’
There’s another Avery coming through – 14-year-old Magnus – and Phil Avery likes the idea of playing football with him too.
“If I don’t, I’ll never live it down,’’ he says. “I feel like I need to look at the long game and honour that.’’
Avery says his family has been front and centre with his football.
His wife, Nicole, encouraged him to keep playing and their five children grew up watching him. Eamonn was a water boy and a boundary umpire.
“My wife was always big on making sure I had an outlet. And footy was it for me,’’ he says.
“While I wasn’t as raucous as some other guys at the club, going out til all hours, you’d have your moments.’’
Murray says with a laugh: “Phil’s wife might be our greatest asset. When they had their first kid she said he had to have something outside the family and he had to have footy. She needs to speak to every wife in Melbourne. Because that’s not what my wife says!’’

Phil Avery says he loves Hawthorn Amateur Football Club.
It has many good people, he says, and a community focus.
This year, embracing the growth of female football, it fielded a second women’s team.
And for some time it has operated a program called ‘Wings’, raising money to provide mental health services to players, officials and supporters.
It followed the death of two former players and a former player’s father.
Avery says his club has taken the lead on a critical community issue.
“The generation I’m from, mental health was viewed as a weakness when I was growing up. Through the club I’ve gained greater awareness of this sort of stuff,’’ he says.
“It’s helped me understand different situations people go through, and that it’s not a weakness in any way. I’m more conscious of it and I can look out for these things. It’s awesome what the club has done in that space.’’
Waldron says Avery is an exemplary clubman.
Often after a reserves game he’ll serve as goal umpire for the seniors.
He looks out for teammates too, “young and old’’.
“He’s a bit of a father figure for some of the boys, particularly the kids from the country with their parents back home,’’ Waldron says. “He’s a good person to have around.’’
Sill says: “The Avery connection at our footy club is just fantastic. They’re wonderful human beings. They make it a better place.’’

Inflation in Twin Cities, like the nation as a whole, remains uncomfortably hot.
New data released Thursday showed that the year-over-year prices consumers paid for services and goods in September climbed 7.4% in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region. They rose 8.2% in the U.S. as a whole.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean things are cheaper in Minneapolis,” said Paul LaPorte, an economist with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. “It just means that prices may not have moved as fast.”
In fact, prices for groceries, restaurants and gas rose faster over the past year in the Twin Cities compared with the U.S., he said.
Still, it’s the first time since January that inflation for the Twin Cities, as measured by the consumer price index, has dipped below 8%. The metro area rate, which comes out every other month, reached a high of 8.7% in May.
The U.S. rate, which comes out monthly, hit a recent year-over-year high of 9.1% in June and has been slowly coming down since then.
Categories where Twin Cities prices did not rise as quickly as the U.S. over the past year include shelter, apparel, new and used motor vehicles, and recreation, LaPorte said.
Year-over-year inflation has been cooling off a bit as gas prices have fallen in recent months. The price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Minnesota peaked at a record-high of $4.76 in mid-June, according to AAA.
But the price is slowly creeping back up and is now at $3,78 a gallon. It is expected to continue to rise because major oil exporting countries recently decided to cut production.
Akshay Rao, a marketing professor at the University of Minnesota, said food and energy price increases may have a delayed impact on prices in other sectors even after the prices for those particular categories fall.
“Gasoline has an impact on everything in our economy — as does food,” he said. “Everybody eats.”
Rao said the areas that saw sizable price increases in September, such as rent and health care, are in areas where workers might have gotten raises to account for the rising costs of putting food on the table and commuting to work. And companies, which may have raised prices recently because of higher transportation costs, are not likely to drop the prices at the same rate.
“They’re going to hang onto that increased price as long as people pay for it,” Rao said. “We know that prices go up faster than they come down.”
When you strip out energy and food prices, which tend to be more volatile, so-called “core inflation” increased from August to September, said Marcus Bansah, an economics professor at St. Olaf College.
“That shows that inflation is more persistent or entrenched in the U.S. economy,” he said. “That is bad news for the economy because it means the Fed will be more concerned that inflation is more widespread.”
The report will likely strengthen the Federal Reserve’s resolve to continue aggressively raising interest rates to try to rein in inflation by cooling off demand. The central bank has already hiked rates five times this year, raising short-term interest rates by 3 percentage points since March.
It’s expected to increase rates two more times this year, including a three-quarters of a percentage point increase projected for next month.
However, some economists have become concerned that the Fed is slamming on the brakes too fast, raising the chances of throwing the economy into a recession. They note that inflation in the past year has mostly stemmed from supply chain issues — something that the Fed can’t control with interest rates.
Supply chains in some sectors are improving, easing some price pressures, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said at an event earlier this week. But he said he doesn’t yet see a reason for the Fed to slow down on its planned course.
“We have not yet seen much evidence the underlying inflation — the services inflation, the wage inflation, the labor market — that that is yet softening,” he said.
Kashkari, who will have a vote on the interest rate-setting committee next year, said he expects the Fed will raise rates to the range of 4% to 4.5%, and then hold for awhile as the effects work through the economy.
“Then we can assess: Do we need to go higher from there or can we begin to back off if we think inflation is heading well back down to 2%?” he said, referring to the Fed’s inflation target.

“I’m not sure how much you’ve read or seen about us as a group but we are practically one of New Jersey’s best kept secrets,” laughed Danny Vechesky of 52nd Street, the “World’s longest running” Billy Joel tribute. “We’ve been around a long time; 28 years and I started the band back in 1994 after “The River of Dreams” came out.”
Vechesky or “Danny V” as he is known, calls Burlington County, NJ home but as Joel himself has said in his lyrics, “Home can be the Pennsylvania Turnpike” and Danny knows that reference to touring very well as 52nd Street has played nationally for parts of four decades and on October 16 at the Broadway Theatre of Pitmann he will be doing what he does best at a 6 p.m. show right here in South Jersey.
“Yes, Sunday October 16 at The Pitmann Theatre,” he said enthusiastically. “We usually do outdoor summer concerts for different towns as part of their summer concert series and doing this gives an opportunity for people who normally don’t get to see Billy Joel or have seen him in the past to come out and relax in the summertime with family and friends. So, we’ve been focusing on that aspect probably for the last 10 years and had a wonderful time with it; the response from the crowd is great so that’s been primarily our concerts and they vary depending on the town and how big they can have their events and what the budgets are so, it can be anywhere from a couple of hundred people to a couple of thousand; it’s been something we’ve enjoyed so, we are looking forward to this.”
So, what makes one form a tribute band; let alone one that has stayed together for nearly 30 years? According to Danny, it was just a matter of making a decision.

“I’ve been in a number of bands off and on over the years and always wanted to do a Billy Joel tribute but for different reasons, the timing wasn’t right,” he began. “Then “The River of Dreams” came out and it was hitting the charts and I said to my wife at the time; you know what? I’m gonna do it! I’m gonna do it now! Now as far as the history itself; it all started back in 1974. I was a freshman at Albright College out in Reading, PA and I was on the stage crew when Billy Joel was on the “Piano Man” tour and I guess the only thing that I knew about Billy Joel was the song “Captain Jack” because in Philly; I don’t know if you remember WMMR but Ed Sciaky used to play that song a lot and it was huge in Philadelphia. So, that’s how I knew about Billy and then being on stage crew, I was at the concert, I got a chance to talk to him and being a young kid; I’m blown away. I took piano lessons as a kid but there was a guy who rocked on the piano in the spotlight and I felt really connected. So, I said, that’s it, I’m gonna do that and I had a chance to talk with him and that gave me some encouragement. So, over the years, I learned all of his music and all by ear. I took lessons, I knew theory but his music; I sat down listened to records and learned it all by ear and eventually in college I started doing these coffee houses; all Billy Joel and then eventually with different bands that I was in I’d do a bunch of Billy Joel songs and finally in 1994 I realized; you know what? This is the time and so 28 years ago I started it and we’re still going strong today”
OK Danny, “YOU” had this connection to Joel and his music through a personal experience; how did you find musicians who shared your passion and the other six pieces that make up the 52nd Street Band?
“I lived in North Jersey and Bergen County for 16 years and that’s where the band started. I had put out an advertisement in one of the local rock’n’roll periodicals; I think it was in “The Aquarian” or “The EC Rocker” up there in North Jersey and guys answered the ads and I had auditions with different guys and I just felt which ones would make a good fit and that’s how it came together; up in North Jersey. My guitar player who’s the original guitar player; he’s been with me all 28 years and I’m proud of the fact that we’ve been together that long. We were starting out just at the very beginning of tribute mania and at the time, there was maybe a few bands that were doing it; of course, there was B Streets who was doing Bruce for the longest time even before that but we got in at the right time where all of a sudden at all of these town concerts they started having tribute bands. So, we developed our notoriety with our bread and butter and of course now you know what it’s like; I mean, there’s a tribute for just about every band that ever existed and multi-tributes for different artists as well.”
“My philosophy and my first thought for the band was, I want to put together a band that’s going to present the sound that’s what you hear on the radio,” he continued. “You know, the songs that they love by Billy Joel and I wanted to do so practically as much as possible note for note and even from me singing them. So, I immersed myself and I still do actually in listening to the songs. I sing along with them, I try to make sure that my pronunciations and my pitch are exactly like Billy does it and the guys in the band, they do very close to the same thing so that we present what you’re going to hear as Billy Joel’s music and so it sounds like Billy Joel. Mentally, I’ve known these songs for forever, I grew up with him basically as a kid, I learned them all and every song I can relate to the eras of my life basically by when these songs were played. So, it’s easy for me because of my personal history with each one of those songs; I actually almost feel like when I’m performing them that I am feeling those lyrics as well and not just singing and performing and that kind of works for me. I don’t know about the other guys but I just try to live it and perform it as you hear it on the radio”
With a band and a philosophy in place Danny found his niche as an entertainer and like many others, it was the Fab Four’s appearance on a certain TV show that was the impetus for his love of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
“I started taking piano lessons when I was 11 years old and I realized after a short period of time that I wasn’t going to be another Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky but the thing that really sold my soul on rock’n’roll was seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show and for me that was it. So, even though I was taking general lessons my ear was always leaning to learning some of the stuff that I was hearing; all of the pop songs on the radio. I took classical lessons pretty much through high school and then as I said, meeting Billy my freshman year in college; that was it. I was focused totally in that direction.”
Ah but today there is no Ed Sullivan, there is nothing on the radar even remotely close to a second-coming of a band such as The Beatles but he has some thoughts on that and today’s music climate as well.
“Yeah,” he said with some hesitation, “Believe me, guys in our age group, we recognize that because of our own longevity in music. We recognize it and it’s kind of unfortunate but there is some hope. I do see some young guys that try to emulate the classic guys of that era so there are some young artists that look at Eddie Van Halen or Keith Emerson and Yes or anything that’s like a masterpiece of classic rock and they are trying to emulate that which hopefully that’ll be some of the future of rock’n’roll music; we’ll see.”
There are stories of tribute bands being joined on stage by the artists they are paying homage to; has that ever happened to Danny V and the boys of 52nd Street?
“We had a close call; well besides meeting Billy back in ’74 where we had a very close call coming together. We were performing at the food court in the Wachovia Center in Philly when he was performing there; I’m going to say maybe 10 years ago. We were performing before his concert and so my brother, who was managing us at the time was on the phone and I saw him walking around the food court and he was actually trying to get Billy to come down and meet me after his soundcheck. We were in the same building together but that was his last concert, it was press day so he had a lot of interviews going on so we couldn’t come together but that’s as close as it can be; in the same building that same time.”
Doing anything for 28 years can become monotonous but if there is passion, there is a desire to continue and for Danny V, the audiences and the music make it all worthwhile.

“Yeah, it’s a combination of things really. I enjoy the songs and as I said. I grew up with them so I felt attached to learning them and the history of him and of course sharing it with the audience and with the Billy Joel fans is so rewarding. During the shows to see people enjoying it, singing along with us, coming up to me afterwards and telling me that they really enjoyed it and the cool thing about it is telling me their stories. Always at the end of a show, somebody’s going to come up say, oh I knew Billy when he was in high school or when he played at this bar or I saw him at a restaurant somewhere and to me that’s like the icing on the cake because it adds to the history of the band. I have all these little stories that come along the way so yes, absolutely it’s the performance, it’s singing songs and of course enjoying it and the relationships with the audience as well.”
The show in Pitmann may have a slightly different look and feel to it due to it being an indoor venue which is different from their aforementioned regular outside events.
