New Bain & Company Research Finds Global Revenue For Games Could Grow By More Than 50% Over The Next Five Years – Yahoo Finance https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/new-bain-company-research-finds-global-revenue-for-games-could-grow-by-more-than-50-over-the-next-five-years-yahoo-finance/ The report identifies ways publishers and developers can capture market share , /PRNewswire/ — Global revenue for games could grow by more than 50% over the next five years, according to new research by Bain & Company. Research shows that industry growth is being accelerated by heavy engagement of younger gamers (ages 13 to 17) who spend about 40% more time in video game environments than with any other form of media. Yet, the supply of top talent isn’t keeping pace with demand, an imbalance that is set to worsen as gaming studios lose developers to big technology firms. Bain is encouraging game developers and publishers to prioritize certain areas for success as gaming becomes a foundation for both media, and nonmedia, experiences. (PRNewsfoto/Bain & Company) “Though gamers have historically trended younger, our data suggests fewer gamers are aging out,” said Andre James, global head of Bain’s Media and Entertainment practice. “This shift in behavior brings challenges, as well as opportunities, for game developers and publishers who are faced with increasing consumer demands within virtual and nonvirtual environments. Our research shows that there are three trends that are changing the industry, as well as four areas gaming studios should prioritize to ensure success.” Three Trends that are Changing Gaming According to Bain, the gaming industry has obtained more than $240 billion in investments just since 2019. Compared with slightly older gamers (18 to 34 years), younger gamers are more comfortable in virtual environments, and just over half of the ones surveyed by Bain say they prefer hanging out with friends in a game, rather than in person. Bain says there are three industry trends that are contributing to these changes: Technological Advancements: Increased processing power and reduced latency are enabling developers to create larger virtual worlds that run on any device. Advancements in game engines are becoming a key development platform for other entertainment experiences, and improvements in 3-D graphics may transfer to applications beyond just the gaming industry. Metaverse-style Experiences: Consumers are hungry for more immersive virtual environments, giving technology and media companies an opportunity to hold players’ engagement across various experiences. Live virtual events, e-sports, and socializing are already part of the mix. New Monetization Models: At 78% of games’ revenue, the free-to-play model itself has advanced with ad-operated becoming more accepted on mobile, and in-app purchases becoming more differentiated. The economics of free-to-play are likely to further explode as virtual-world games become a foundation for the numerous other monetizable experiences. More games are also using blockchain technology to enable ownership of characters and accessories. Meeting Rising Expectations By Investors and Consumers To make the most of the above trends, Bain is encouraging game developers and publishers to pay close attention to four areas that will differentiate future winners within the industry. These areas include: Scaling: Large, virtual-world games are expensive to build, heading toward a price tag of $1 billion by 2027. To recoup operational costs, game companies can scale by investing in platform technology, or through partnerships. Deal activity in the gaming sector is on the rise, with gaming software and financial investments being the fastest-growing segments. Companies will need to expand their M&A skills. Ensuring Good Franchise Management: It’s more important than ever to develop meaningful and compelling intellectual property (IP). Most gaming companies need to gain experience in strategically managing a franchise across genres, technologies, and regions. Good franchise management puts the fan at the center of decisions. Enhancing Customer Engagement: As the uses of the metaverse expand and reach scale, players will need to be taken on journeys beyond just the game. Customers will expect the ability to move seamlessly between game play, socializing, and commerce, in physical and virtual worlds. Companies need to establish a proactive approach to building community. Investing in Top Talent: Most video game company executives surveyed by Bain cited talent as their No. 1 priority; yet, tech and video game companies are losing developers to big tech firms, whereas big tech companies pay about 20% more. Simply paying talent won’t be enough. Companies will need to develop more thoughtful talent strategies around recruitment, onboarding and training, to attract and retain the right talent. “This is the moment for game companies to bet big and advance to the next level,” said Anders Christofferson, partner within Bain’s Media and Entertainment practice. “Developers and publishers will need to sharpen their focus if they want to continue to thrive in an environment that’s becoming a greater part of our daily lives.” Media Contact: For any questions or to arrange an interview, please contact Amanda Folsom at amanda.folsom@bain.com About Bain & Company Bain & Company is a global consultancy that helps the world’s most ambitious change makers define the future. Letter: To Protect Women’s Rights, Elect Women At All Levels – Walla Walla Union-Bulletin https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/letter-to-protect-womens-rights-elect-women-at-all-levels-walla-walla-union-bulletin/ Respected anthropologist Ashley Montagu published “The Natural Superiority of Women” in 1953. Almost 70 years and many reprints later, we are fortunate to have a very talented group of women running for election or re-election to public office. U.S. Sen. Patty Murray deserves another term. Natasha Hill would represent us correctly in the U.S. Congress. Marjorie Denton Sanborn for Walla Walla County auditor, Jan Corn for state representative, Michelee Morales for prosecuting attorney, and Danielle Garbe Reser for county commissioner. There are men and other forces in power who would deny, circumscribe and reduce the rights of women. One of the best ways to prevent that from happening, and in fact to expand the range of rights available to women to the level where they are equal to the rights of man, as Thomas Paine might have put it, is to vote women into public office. When my mother, a poll worker all her adult life, was born in 1903, women weren’t allowed to vote. The struggle for the vote and women’s rights has come a long way since 1848. Assert your right to vote. Write in Danielle Garbe Reser for county commissioner, clearly the most experienced and qualified candidate. Charles Potts Walla Walla

A Guide To Camping From Gear To Cooking The Washington Post
A Guide To Camping From Gear To Cooking The Washington Post
A Guide To Camping, From Gear To Cooking – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/a-guide-to-camping-from-gear-to-cooking-the-washington-post/ When you need to get away from it all, camping can be the best vacation for the job. Whether you’re going bare-bones backpacking, car camping with an arsenal of amenities or full-on glamping — camping can help us unplug, unwind and appreciate nature. It gives us the chance to learn new skills, get to know our National Parks and see wildlife up close (but not too close). And even if you’re only a few miles from home, there’s something restorative about sleeping in the outdoors, even if it just reminds you of how much you love your bed. Here’s our best advice for planning your adventure, from how to book a campsite to what to pack. For first-timers, keep it simple Return to menu If you’ve never camped before, start with the basics: Pick a campsite based on your needs, borrow some gear and test setting up your tent before you leave. You’ll probably want to start with car camping, which is most approachable. You simply drive to your site, pitch your tent and let nature do the rest. Even though it’s easier to get there, you’ll still reap the benefits of sleeping outdoors. Figure out what to buy, rent and pack Return to menu Once you’ve picked a campsite, you’ll pack according to your adventure. Packing for car camping, for example, looks very different from packing for bike camping where every ounce matters, as Washington Post homepage editor Chris George detailed for us in 2019. Learn what this backpacking cyclist packs on his bike to stay on the road. (Video: Monica Rodman/The Washington Post, Photo: Monica Rodman/The Washington Post) There are also some surprising essentials you might not realize you need until you need them, like scissors or a clothing line. If you’re not sure you want to camp again or are worried about the cost of buying everything you need, consider renting some or all of your gear from companies like Kit Lender or finding used gear on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Poshmark. Return to menu If you’re going on a hardcore trek through the backcountry, you may have to stick with survival basics for food. But if you have the luxury of packing a little more, you can have some amazing meals. Really. All you need is an open fire, maybe a skillet and a game plan. The key to gourmet success is to plan every meal ahead of your camping trip and, for your sanity, stick to a menu that calls for no more than 10 ingredients or 30 minutes to cook. As you plan those meals (and maybe even cocktails), think of ways you can prep them in advance for easier campsite execution. Try camping beyond summer Return to menu Many seasoned campers prefer getting their trips in during the fall versus the busier, hotter summer months. But as temperatures begin to drop, sleeping outside can require different rules and gear. Kevin Long, CEO of the camping app the Dyrt, says fall camping brings the opportunity to appreciate fall foliage up close, and recommends trips in the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevadas, Northeast, Great Lakes region, and New York and Washington states in early October; the Pacific Northwest and Mid-Atlantic in mid-to-late October; and the South and Southwest in late October, early November. Take extra safety steps for solo camping Return to menu As with any kind of solo travel, camping alone comes with its own risks and challenges. If you’re considering, take these precautions from security experts — and words of encouragement. The first step is to pick a campsite where you’ll feel safe; you might not want to go somewhere remote where you won’t have cell service, for example. Before you take off, make sure to tell at least two loved ones where you’re going and your estimated departure and arrival times. Don’t, however, post your plans on social media with your exact whereabouts. If you don’t want to rough it, glamp Return to menu Sleeping on the ground in the woods isn’t for everyone. Glamping takes a lot of the rough out of roughing it while still giving you the experience of being outdoors. You can find glamping pods and yurts, luxurious canvas tents inspired by African safari camps or more budget-friendly options by searching on Glamping.com, Hipcamp and Campspot. Here are more tips on glamping vs. camping.

DMN Charities Fall Campaign Launches To Benefit Local Nonprofits The Dallas Morning News
DMN Charities Fall Campaign Launches To Benefit Local Nonprofits – The Dallas Morning News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/dmn-charities-fall-campaign-launches-to-benefit-local-nonprofits-the-dallas-morning-news/ With the goal of raising $1.2 million for 19 area nonprofits, the 37th annual Dallas Morning News Charities fall campaign launched Wednesday. Every year the campaign raises money for charities that focus on homelessness and hunger. This year, the fundraising will go directly to organizations in North Texas working to keep people and families out of economic crisis as the cost of living inflates. “That’s where our charities can fill in the gap for people in our community who are struggling,” said Camille Grimes, executive director of The Dallas Morning News Charities. Even though many people have regained jobs since the first days of the pandemic, she said, inflation is driving some people to financial insecurity with soaring costs of groceries, utilities, gas and rent. Last year, the fall and winter campaign raised $1.2 million for 23 charities in North Texas, and this year’s goal is to match that fundraising. More than $123,000 has already been raised through donations from DallasNews Corp. employees and other organizations and individuals. “The Dallas Morning News Charities continues to focus our efforts on helping our homeless and hungry citizens throughout North Texas,” Grant Moise, publisher and president of The Dallas Morning News, said. “We continue to be thankful for those of you who trust us to get your generous donations into the right hands who are not only caring for these members of our community, but are also trying to design programs to help these people get back on their feet.” The Dallas Morning News Charities added three new charities this year. Here’s a closer look at the new organizations. The Wilkinson Center volunteer Bennie Gonzalez organizes food items during his volunteer hour at the Wilkinson Center in Dallas on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022. The center serves East, Southeast Dallas, and Pleasant Grove and provides food, financial assistance, adult education classes, and workforce development. (Shafkat Anowar / Staff Photographer) The Wilkinson Center serves Pleasant Grove and East and Southeast Dallas with resources to lift and keep people out of poverty. The organization runs a food bank and educational services, including GED, English language classes, employment programming and computer literacy. “We’re really growing where the community needs us,” said programs director Rachael Berhe. The center has seen an increase during the pandemic in people attending virtual night classes. Additionally, professional case managers now work with food pantry clients to address food insecurity, Berhe said. The food pantry alone served over 3,000 households and more than 8,000 individuals last year. Maria Powers, the food pantry’s director, said the pantry is “more than just giving out food.” She said she is constantly thinking about her clients and their health needs. For example, she tries to have options beyond canned foods, which for some seniors can be too high in sodium. However, some foods, such as canned goods, eggs, milk and meat are harder to get due to ongoing supply chain disruptions. Last week she could only give families one meat item for the whole week. Also focused on both immediate needs and long term solutions, Irving Cares’ three-pronged approach provides food, utility assistance, and job and life coaching. Irving Cares Chief Executive Kyle Taylor described the group as a “basic needs organization.” Taylor said these needs have shifted since the early days of the pandemic. While clients used to need more food assistance, the group has seen a significant increase in demand for rent, utility bills and gasoline assistance. “We know that paychecks have not grown at the rate of inflation,” he said. The group works to help clients with personalized plans, from the short-term, at the food pantry, to the long-term, with rent assistance programs and financial literacy, GED and job skills classes. The organization was founded in 1967 to help residents after a tornado, Taylor said. Every year, Irving Cares’ goal is to lift 50 families in Irving out of poverty. Tracy Ferguson, Chief Development Officer of the Samaritan Inn pets a dog at the center’s dog shelter in McKinney on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022. The Samaritan Inn is a homeless shelter is the only homeless shelter in Collin County and has a space to take care of dogs. (Shafkat Anowar / Staff Photographer) The Samaritan Inn serves as the only homeless shelter in Collin County. Its new facilities in McKinney and staff provide housing, food, social services and childcare to nearly 600 clients a year. “We have a wraparound approach,” CEO Jill Scigliano said. About one third of the shelter’s residents are children, as the group serves both families and single adults. The dramatic rise in the cost of living since the pandemic has pushed people in into Collin County in search of jobs and cheaper living costs, Scigliano said. As a result, the shelter has seen an increase in residents in need of housing. “In McKinney, we do not have public transportation,” she explained. “That’s a huge issue. If an unhoused person gets here, they’re here. They don’t have a lot of options as far as getting out. The group relies on a network of volunteer drivers, bicycles and Uber vouchers for transportation for residents. Its facilities include libraries, children’s play areas and a kennel to house residents’ dogs. The Samaritan Inn also provides veterinary care at no cost to pet owners. Tracey Ferguson, The Samaritan Inn’s chief development officer, said people often won’t go to shelters because they don’t want to give their dogs away. The group pays for all of their residents’ needs from transportation to clothing, and residents work with social workers to take adult education classes and become financially stable. Ferguson said people tend to stay at the shelter for about six months before their lives stabilize. “We have to make sure that all families and individuals that come to us also have their own support network and that they aren’t always relying on us or the system,” Scigliano said. World Sight Day: 5 Yoga Tips For Better Eyesight – Indiatimes.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/world-sight-day-5-yoga-tips-for-better-eyesight-indiatimes-com/ If there are any body parts that we have in this current age of screens and gadgets and of course social media have abused more – It is our poor eyes. Unsplash/Representational Image Let’s be honest: Is eye care really something we actively think about? Especially preventive eye care? We usually attend to our eyes, when something is wrong, by which time, a fair amount of damage is already done. Eye care needs to be a little higher on our list of priorities than it is right now. Think about how much our eyes do for us all day long, from the moment we open them and begin our day, to when we close them at night. Taking care of them is no longer a nice thing to do, It is essential. So on the occasion of World Eyesight Day, here are 5 eye exercises prescribed in Yoga which will help keep your eyes on top of their game: They help relax the eyes, strengthen the muscles around the eyes and enhance the functioning of the optic nerves.  If you are prone to seizures, please consult your doctor before starting these exercises, and also it is helpful to splash your eyes with cold water before doing any of the below exercises Remember to keep the head and your spine straight, shoulders pulled back and the chin parallel to the floor throughout the exercises. BCCL/Representational Image 1. Palming – Preparatory relaxation for the eyes  Sit in any comfortable posture, eyes closed and take a few deep breaths to relax. Inhale and exhale through the nose Rub the palms of your hands until they become warm and gently use your palms to cup your eyelids. Feel the warmth of the palms being transferred onto the eyes and you will feel instantly relaxed Keeping your eyes closed, lower your hands and continue breathing Once again rub the palms and repeat the process at least three times. BCCL/Representational Image 2. Front Focus – Helping strengthen the muscles around the eyes Sit in any comfortable posture, eyes closed and take a few deep breaths to relax. Inhale and exhale through the nose Now, make a fist out of your left fingers and stretch the arm forward and point your thumb upward. Ensure the fist and thumb are at your eye level Open your eyes and focus now on the left thumb for 5 seconds and then gently shift the focus to another point straight ahead beyond the thumb for 5 secs and repeat this pattern 5 times, shifting the focus from the left thumb to a point further, both at your eye level. Keep breathing evenly throughout Repeat the same process with the right thumb. Close your eyes and rest. Unsplash/Representational Image 3. Side Focus – Helping strengthen the muscles around the eyes Sit in any comfortable posture, eyes closed and take a few deep breaths to relax. Inhale and exhale through the nose Now, make a fist out of your left fingers and stretch the arm forward and point your thumb upward. Ensure the fist and thumb are at your eye level Open your eyes and focus now on the left thumb, now slowly move the left thumb to the left on the same eye level, and try to follow the movement of the thumb with your eyes without turning your head. ( do as much as it is comfortable) Bring the thumb very slowly back to the centre, pause for a few seconds and repeat again two times Keep breathing evenly throughout Repeat the same process with the right thumb. Close your eyes and rest. BCCL/Representational Image 4. Blinking Sit up tall in any comfortable position with your eyes open  Take a deep breath and start blinking quickly.  Stop when you have blinked about 10 times.  Close your eyes and relax for about 20 seconds.  Feel your breath while you are relaxing.  Repeat this cycle of blink and rest 5 times in total 5. Southcoast Wonders: Explore Roadside Cemeteries In Greater Fall River Fall River Herald News
Southcoast Wonders: Explore Roadside Cemeteries In Greater Fall River Fall River Herald News
Southcoast Wonders: Explore Roadside Cemeteries In Greater Fall River – Fall River Herald News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/southcoast-wonders-explore-roadside-cemeteries-in-greater-fall-river-fall-river-herald-news/ The past is around every corner in southern New England, often literally. The cities and towns of Greater Fall River still carry signs of history that go back to this country’s founding — gravestones, slate and granite, marking the final resting places of people who led fascinating lives ages ago.   Tiny roadside cemeteries can be found all over the area, dozens of them, often hidden behind centuries-old stone walls in family burying grounds that have been maintained as green space while the modern world has developed around them. While some of these grounds haven’t seen new burials in over a century, a few are surprisingly active.  Visiting these out-of-the-way spots is a great way to touch local history, see something you may never have noticed before — and most importantly these days, set the perfect mood for spooky season. Just remember to leave no trace and be respectful.  Here are 13 hidden spots worth seeking out to find some fall vibes.  A living space: Fall River’s Oak Grove Cemetery is growing, and developing a master plan for its future Borden-Bowen Cemetery, Fall River  Where is it? This small cemetery on Purchase Street is directly next to the Church of the Holy Spirit — but it’s not a churchyard. It’s municipal land, maintained by the city. It was once a family plot on the site of the Bowen farm.  How to visit: Walk along Purchase Street and it’s right there, elevated above street level, surrounded by a granite wall. To actually walk on the grounds, you’ll need to cut through the church’s driveway and slip in the back.  Who’s there? As the name suggests, the cemetery holds members of the Bowen and Borden families through the 1800s (though not those more famous Bordens). The Bowens are among the oldest Fall River families, with patriarch Abraham Bowen Sr. — below the largest headstone — being one of the founders of the Fall River Manufactory, the first cotton mill to be built over the Quequechan River and the city’s first successful textile mill. He was also the city’s first postmaster, and died in 1824.   Fun facts: Remember how Fall River was known as Troy from 1804 to 1833? That was Abraham Bowen Sr.’s idea.   Spookiness factor: 1/10. Despite being a cemetery, it’s not very spooky at all, especially since new streetlights line Purchase Street.  Valentine-Reed Cemetery, Fall River  Where is it? A stone’s throw from the Freetown border in the north end of Fall River, this city-owned plot is tucked between the two entrances to the Four Winds apartment complex.  How to visit: Valentine-Reed sits directly on North Main Street, and is accessible to the public.  Who’s there? As the name suggests, this was originally a family plot for the Valentines and their descendants, who owned substantial acreage in this area in the mid-18th century. Among them buried here are William Valentine, who built the historic house at 5015 N. Main St. In 1767.   Fun facts: Though most of the monuments are from the 1800s and early 1900s, the most recent burial here seems to have been in 1996, Eleanor Winslow Athearn. She was married to Roy C. Athearn, a descendant of the Valentine family; they lived in that historic home.  Spookiness factor: 4/10. It’s just steps away from a main road, and a condo complex next door, but hidden corners make this cemetery worth exploring.  Saving the past: Fall River OK’d the Community Preservation Act 10 years ago. Has it been worth the money? Mother’s Brook Cemetery, Fall River  Where is it? Almost directly across North Main Street from Valentine Cemetery, you’ll find this small burial ground hidden in the woods.  How to visit: Park along North Main Street between the entrances to Four Winds and look for a clearing across the street. You’ll need to climb a small hill.  Who’s there? Many of the gravestones here are for early colonial settlers, with some dating to the 1700s, including that of Capt. Constant Church — son of Col. Benjamin Church, early European colonist and leader of the English forces against Native Americans in King Philip’s War.   Fun facts: Although this cemetery is within Fall River’s borders, technically this space belongs to the town of Freetown, never having been transferred when Fall River became a separate community in 1803.  Spookiness factor: 6/10. The plethora of unmarked stones here gives it an eerie atmosphere.  Fall River Friends Cemetery, Fall River  Where is it? Where Hood Street meets Wiley Street, tucked in between closely packed triple-deckers, is a tiny public cemetery that you might mistake for someone’s backyard if not for the line of gravestones.  How to visit: It’s city property, but you’ll have to cross a private driveway at the end of Hood Street and duck under a locked chain.  Who’s there? As the name suggests, this was once a cemetery for a local group of the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers.   Fun facts: The Fall River Preparative Meeting of Friends, which used this land, was an offshoot of a Swansea Quaker group, and was active from 1818 until 1960.  Spookiness factor: 5/10. The grounds themselves are pleasant and ordinary, but it’s so much like someone’s yard that it may feel like you’re trespassing.  Oak Tree Cemetery, Fall River  Where is it? It’s on Brightman Street, near the railroad bridge, across from North Burial Ground.   How to visit: An open gate on Brightman Street makes this accessible to the public.  Who’s there? Only a few stones are scattered here, some so weather-worn that it’s hard to read the inscriptions. A family plot contains the remains of Caroline Denton and three of her children, the oldest of whom was 12. All died within a two-year span from 1854 to 1856. Fun facts: Around this time, a quarter of infants died before they turned 1, and half of children died before they turned 15. Hmm. That’s not really “fun,” is it? Oh dear. Spookiness factor: 4/10. It’s not a particularly creepy location, although imagining the tragedy that must’ve befallen the Denton family is quite chilling.  Brightman Farm Cemetery, Fall River  Where is it? Willow Street is a short road that connects New Boston Road to Meridian Street. Along the east side is a small burial ground tucked between single-family homes.  How to visit: A short granite staircase leads from the sidewalk to the grounds.  Who’s there? As the name suggests, this was once part of Brightman’s Farm, and was used by descendants of the Brightman family for generations.   Fun facts: Although most roadside cemeteries have long since been abandoned, this one saw a burial in 2009: Patricia A. Brightman, descendant of the Brightman family, with an old-fashioned slate headstone in place.  Spookiness factor: 2/10. It’s a quiet, peaceful place — autumnal but not scary.  Jonathan Slade Cemetery, Somerset  Where is it? A sizable plot of land, this cemetery sits on Riverside Avenue at the end of Slade’s Ferry Avenue.  How to visit: With businesses and a bank right nearby, there’s plenty of parking, and the grounds are accessible via Riverside Avenue.   Who’s there? Generations of Slades are buried here, going back to the 1720s. Its namesake, Jonathan Slade, was a prominent businessman, along with William Lawton Slade, descendants of the owners of the Slade’s Ferry, and ship owners themselves. The cemetery lies near where the ferry — and later the Slade’s Ferry Bridge — would have taken passengers and cargo across the Taunton River.  Fun facts: Branches of the Slade and Brightman families were connected by business interests for generations — they both operated ferries across the river.  Spookiness factor: 9.5/10. Surveying the grounds reveals that the soil above at least one of the plots has sunken dramatically, making it look like either someone tried to dig it up, or someone tried to dig their way out. Neither option seems nice.  John Anthony Cemetery, Somerset  Where is it? Tucked inside the Somerset Park and Ride on Route 103 is a small plot of land holding a handful of gravestones, many of them misplaced or broken.  How to visit: There’s plenty of parking at the park and ride, with the graveyard easily accessible.  Who’s there? Many of the stones here have been toppled and shattered, but the visible ones are members of the Anthony family. According to “The History of the Town of Somerset Massachusetts,” John and Nathan Anthony were ship owners, and Israel Anthony was a Methodist preacher.  Spookiness factor: 7/10. The stones have long shifted from their spots, so as you walk the grounds it’s unclear where anyone’s graves actually are — a creepy thought.  Babcock-Gifford Cemetery, Westport  Where is it? Along the west side of Blossom Road in Westport.  How to visit: The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall and an iron gate that stands ajar.  Who’s there? Along with Babcocks and Giffords, of course, there are members of the Hicks, Hix and Wordell families too, among others. This is also the resting place of Corp. Benjamin Franklin Gerry, a Fall River resident who died in 1913 and fought from 1861 to 1864 in the Civil War as a member of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry, Company A.  Fun facts: One of the residents of this burial ground is William Henry Gifford, who died in 1915. According to “The History of Bristol County, Massachusetts” by D. Hamilton Hurd, Gifford was an industrious farmer who grew to become a major businessman in the area. Gifford had significant real estate holdings, owned part of a whaling ship, and was director of the Barnard Manufacturing Co., which today we know as the Tower Mill on Quarry Street.  Spookiness factor: 2/10. This is a well-kept place with bright white headstones; nothing to fear here.  Blossom Cemetery, Westport  Where is it? Along the eastern side of Blossom Roa...

Here is the latest news from the world of Indian and International Sports brought to you by The Indian Express. “Let’s begin with news from the T20 World Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India won’t be announcing the injured pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement anytime soon. Instead, the board has decided to send Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur to Australia at the earliest. The BCCI has left it to team management to decide on whom they want to take. A source in the BCCI has said that the team management, in particular captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid, will assess these players and then take a call. The Indian team received a series of jolts in the past month with Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Deepak Chahar all being ruled out of the world cup” “Shardul Thakur on Wednesday asked for help when his kit bags went missing at the Mumbai Airport terminal 2. Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh responded quickly for help, but by that time, staff from a different airline had already helped the Team India all-rounder. Shardul tweeted: “@airindiain can you send someone to help me with the luggage belt? Not the first time that my kit bags haven’t arrived and no staff present at the location either !!” Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh was quick to reply, he quoted Shardul’s tweet and wrote: “My dear, we will make sure you get your bag and our staff will be there to assist you.. sorry for the inconvenience. Ex Airindian Bhajji we love you.”” “Umran Malik and Kuldeep Sen, who caught the eye with their express speed during the Indian Premier League, will not go to Australia, despite the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) naming the duo among the net bowlers chosen to assist the team in the lead-up to the ICC T20 World Cup. The reason is: Delay in getting visas for Australia. Malik, from Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh’s Sen, and Chetan Sakariya and Mukesh Chaudhary were the four pacers chosen to accompany the 15-member official squad which travelled from India to Perth to take part in warm-up games. Sakariya and Chaudhary already had their Australia visas as they were part of an exchange programme.” “On to some football news, Mo Salah came off the bench to score the fastest-ever hat trick in Champions League history as Liverpool routed Rangers 7-1 at Ibrox on Wednesday. The Egyptian came on in the second half with Liverpool leading 3-1 and proceeded to fire a stunning treble in just six minutes, and 12 seconds to set a new benchmark in the competition. Bafétimbi Gomis previously held the record from 2011 when he took eight minutes to complete his hat trick. But Salah smashed that time with his stunning feat, walking away with the match ball in Glasgow and putting the seal on a confidence-boosting win for Liverpool, which is in a strong position to advance to the round of 16.” “Barcelona couldn’t get the victory it needed at home against Inter Milan, and for the second season in a row, the Catalan club likely won’t make it to the knockout stage of the Champions League. Robert Lewandowski scored in stoppage time to help Barcelona salvage a 3-3 draw in a thrilling back-and-forth match against Inter on Wednesday, but the result did little to help Barça’s chances of advancing. Lewandowski kept the team alive — for now at least — with a last-gasp header after the visitors had taken a 3-2 lead with a goal from Robin Gosens in the 89th. A loss would have meant certain elimination for Barcelona for a second consecutive season in the group stage.” “Son Heung-min scored twice as Tottenham came from behind and then survived a late scare to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday. Harry Kane also scored to help Tottenham move atop Group D — one point clear of both Marseille and Sporting Lisbon — with two rounds remaining. But the England captain’s penalty miss in stoppage time added to a frantic finale. Spurs manager Antonio Conte said, “We could have scored many goals. Instead, until the end, we suffer. For sure, we have to try to learn about this situation and understand the game has not ended.”” Victory against Sporting in Tottenham’s next match will secure qualification to the round of 16.” “Lastly, in some news from the NRAI. Days before a 24-member Indian team begins its campaign at the 2022 ISSF Pistol/Rifle Shooting World Championships, the National Rifle Association of India released the selection policy for the 2024 Paris Olympics on its website. The federation has introduced Olympic Shooting trials scheduled to be conducted in the first half of 2024 with an eye on selecting the final team for the Games by June, a month before the quadrennial mega event. The policy is a marked change from the Tokyo Olympics criteria, which emphasize a shooter’s four-year cycle leading up to the Games and allowed them to pick their best five scores, the average of which would be considered for selection. “ “You were listening to the Expresso Sports Update by The Indian Express. Konami Wants To Get Into Web3 And Metaverse Development For Some Reason – Gamesradar https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/konami-wants-to-get-into-web3-and-metaverse-development-for-some-reason-gamesradar/ Home Games (Image credit: Konami) Konami is getting into Web3 and Metaverse development, because of course it is. Konami announced earlier today on October 13 in a blog post (opens in new tab) that it would be hiring workers to construct both Web3 and Metaverse services. This, according to the blog post, is all geared up in service of Konami launching a system where users can trade NFTs to each other online. There are currently 13 open positions at the Japanese company for development surrounding Web3 and Metaverse-related projects. Konami hopes this will “strengthen our structure and accelerate our business,” which perfectly aligns with NFTs general goals for global warming and climate change.  Expectation from Konami fans is generally pretty low nowadays, what with the unceremonious torching of Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and anything else remotely promising. Metal Gear has been relegated to pachinko games in recent years in Japan, after all, and who the hell knows what’s going on with Silent Hill at this point, after years of rumor, anticipation, and speculation.  Konami isn’t the only gaming-adjacent company getting into NFTs, unfortunately. Square Enix also has its eyes set on the digital marketplace, telling investors it would be pouring money into both NFTs and the cloud back in May earlier this year. Could we not just have video games please, Konami and Square Enix? You’re actually quite good at making them, funnily enough.   Let’s just hope those reported Silent Hill projects end up being good enough to drag Konami away from the awful NFT/Metaverse space. Since a new Silent Hill game was even rated in Korea just last month, here’s hoping we’re not too far off from a grand revival of the iconic horror franchise.  Konami is still planning on relisting Metal Gear Solid games originally taken down over historical footage.    Hirun Cryer is a freelance reporter and writer with Gamesradar+ based out of U.K. After earning a degree in American History specializing in journalism, cinema, literature, and history, he stepped into the games writing world, with a focus on shooters, indie games, and RPGs, and has since been the recipient of the MCV 30 Under 30 award for 2021. Tineco Toasty One Test: The Toaster Of The Future? Basic Tutorials
Tineco Toasty One Test: The Toaster Of The Future? Basic Tutorials
Tineco Toasty One Test: The Toaster Of The Future? – Basic Tutorials https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/tineco-toasty-one-test-the-toaster-of-the-future-basic-tutorials/ The topic of smart homes has become increasingly important in recent years. It’s not just our vacuum cleaners that now move through the home fully automatically. Things like security systems, lighting and doorbell systems are also increasingly being integrated into the home network. The manufacturer has already proven in the past that Tineco is also an expert in the field of smart homes. The company was particularly convincing with its vacuum wipers such as the Floor One S5 (test) and Floor One S3 (test), which can also be integrated into the WLAN and used with a practical app. Now, however, the US manufacturer is going one step further. With the Tineco Toasty One, a smart toaster has been created without further ado. It doesn’t have WiFi, but it wants to revolutionize toasting bread. Of course, this raises several questions. Do we need it? Who spends so much money on a toaster? We clarify it in the Tineco Toasty One test. Tineco Toasty One test: Why a smart toaster? Before we get down to the nitty-gritty, I’d first like to ask myself how Tineco even came up with the idea of making a toaster smart, of all things. To clarify this, let’s take a look at current standard models in the toaster sector. You can already get these for little money. My current toaster has a dial for the degree of browning as well as two buttons for defrosting and keeping warm. In particular, the adjustable browning level always has a bit of a lottery character in my opinion. After all, every toast behaves differently here and a classic toaster relies solely on the time factor. The shorter the toasting process, the lighter the toast and vice versa. In many cases, the toast does not meet the customer’s expectations. According to Tineco, this is precisely the problem it wants to address with its Toasty One. Thus, one should be able to set a certain degree of browning in a targeted manner. In doing so, one can select different types of bread and also other baked goods to achieve perfect results. The smart toaster also provides information about the duration of the toasting process. Does this also work in practice? We take a closer look and sit down at the breakfast table. Design and workmanship 4-inch RGB display round design combination of black, white and stainless steel Let’s start with the looks first. The Tineco Toasty One is anything but a compact toaster. For this reason, it should have quite a bit going for it in terms of design. Although this is a completely different product category, Tineco stays true to the rest of its design line with its smart toaster. In other words, the colors black and white dominate here. The whole thing is rounded off with shiny stainless steel. The round shapes also ensure that the toaster doesn’t come across as too bulky. Still, I can imagine that it might take up too much space in slightly smaller kitchens. Another parallel to Tineco’s vacuum wipers is the LED display. This measures a whopping 4 inches on the Toasty One and is touch-sensitive. Everything takes place on the control center of the household appliance. Here you not only get the most important information presented, but you can also regulate your individual toasting process. It may sound silly, but the first toast I toasted using the smart toaster felt kind of cool. Finally, Tineco turns what would otherwise be a natural process into a real science. In part, I felt reminded of brewing coffee here. Of course, you can opt for a filter coffee maker for the price of 20 euros. Alternatively, however, there are high-quality and -priced portafilter machines that require more work and patience, but the result justifies it. Does it look the same with the smart toaster from Tineco? The practical test Automatic and manual mode Both toasts can be toasted differently Adjustable degree of browning Now it’s time to set the breakfast table and plug in the Tineco Toasty One. We want to test the smart toaster namely in practice. Once turned on, it reveals two different modes. Besides the Smart mode, you can also select a manual mode. In Smart mode, the sliced toast is prepared completely automatically. Once the toast slices are inserted, you now decide to use the right, left or both sides. Following that, you need to decide on the tanning level. Here, you can also find names for the different shades on Tineco’s website. From light to dark, they go by the names Moon Light, Honeymoon, Sunburnt and Night Sky. The #ToastYourWay makes it clear that Tineco clearly wants to do marketing via social media here. The practical thing about the slider is that you also get a kind of preview of the finished result at the same time. So you know what you can expect. The fact that you can have both slices of toast prepared differently at the same time is definitely a big plus. After all, it’s a matter of taste what degree of browning a toast should have. Once you have decided on everything, you just confirm the input and you are ready to go. The degree of browning of the toast at the current time can be followed on the display the whole time. If you have made up your mind at the last minute and want to revise your previous selection, you can quickly change your mind. To do this, you simply have to cancel at the right time. How does the toast taste? The most important question, of course, is how the end result tastes. The result was perfectly toasted slices of bread that not only tasted good, but also had the desired degree of browning. It didn’t matter whether the toast slices were previously frozen or not. Even though the degree of browning differed significantly between two slices, the final result was exactly the same as the preset. By the way, the keep-warm function is also particularly practical, as it turned out afterwards. If you go to the kitchen in the morning to load the Toasty One with slices of bread, you can still comfortably take a shower afterwards without fearing cold toast. Thanks to the reheat function, even slices that have already been toasted can be reheated without becoming dry. Manual mode for other baked goods Unfortunately, the Smart mode is only suitable for classic toast slices. But that doesn’t mean that other things can’t be toasted with the Toasty One. The manual mode is suitable for this. This also scores with different toasting levels – four in number. On top of that, you can also make other specifications for the “toasted food”. For example, the toaster wants to know whether the baked goods are fresh or frozen. Reheating is also possible here. I tried the whole thing with a croissant and was convinced by the result. The right toast for everyone In the long run, the setting of the desired toast can perhaps annoy one or the other a little. Apparently, Tineco has also thought of this and opened the possibility for presets. So you can save up to eight toast settings. These can then be selected via one of the handy shortcut keys. If you have to be quick, the smart toaster’s automatic shut-off function proved practical in the test. This way, you don’t have to worry about the toaster being on for the entire workday on your way to work. Instead, this turns off automatically after ten minutes of operation. Also practical but now also standard in any classic toaster is the crumb tray. This is where a lot of bread residue collects over time. This could be pulled out in the test exceedingly smoothly from the toaster. Tineco Toasty One Test: Conclusion Of course, the Tineco Toasty One first makes you shake your head at first glance. This may be further strengthened once you consider the high price. But what can I say? I had a lot of fun with the smart toaster during the test days. The device achieved perfect results, especially in the main discipline of toasting. The control via the chic color display is intuitive. Especially when you want different degrees of browning, the Toasty One is a real revolution. Finally, these can be roasted in parallel. Not quite as smart, but rather classic, the Toasty One seems when you want to toast buns or other baked goods. Since this is only possible in manual mode, I then feel reminded of my toaster for 20 euros. Speaking of financial aspects, we have already reached the Achilles’ heel of the smart household helper – the price. With an MSRP 339.00 euros, it is anything but a bargain. However, if you’re a real toast fetishist and are into a high-quality piece of technology, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for here. If you’re willing to spend that kind of money on a smart toaster, the Tineco Toasty One is the perfect device. Supply Chain Snarls Loosen For U.S. Companies, But Plenty Of Problems Remain – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/supply-chain-snarls-loosen-for-u-s-companies-but-plenty-of-problems-remain-reuters/ Shipping containers are seen at a terminal of the Port of Oakland in Oakland, California, U.S., July 22, 2022. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Oct 13 (Reuters) – John Ehresmann loves that the cost of shipping an ocean container from Asia to a U.S. port or buying a load of lumber has fallen back to earth. If only that were true for everything he buys – but it’s not. Some parts of his supply chain have clearly improved, said the vice president of global supply for Graco Inc (GGG.N), the Minneapolis-based maker of fluid handling equipment such as paint sprayers. But the complex nature of global supply chains means that companies like Graco are still struggling, since the shortage of just one part can hobble them. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “Not having that one micro-controller can still stop you in your path,” said Ehresmann, referring to an electronic part common in many of the company’s products that remains scarce. The COVID-19 pandemic set off a crisis in global supply chains, which is showing signs of healing. The cost of shipping a container from Asia to the U.S. West Coast just clicked below $2,500, after peaking late last year at over $10,000, according to booking platform Freightos Group, and big backups at U.S. ports have dwindled. Lumber prices are the lowest they have been in over two years, while the cost of steel and aluminum have moderated. Getting supplies of everything flowing more freely again is key for the U.S. Federal Reserve, which hopes that will help pull down inflation. For now, inflation remains uncomfortably high. On Wednesday, the Labor Department reported that the Producer Price Index – a gauge of what suppliers charge other businesses – rose more than expected in September. This suggests falling prices for some goods and services are still far from working their way fully through the economy. The PPI for final demand rose 8.5% in September from a year ago, though that’s a notch down from the 8.7% annual increase in August and was the smallest annual increase since July 2021. Lower producer prices are needed before consumers can expect much inflation relief. A closely watched report on consumer prices will be released Thursday. Reuters Graphics SHIFTING DEMAND Another gauge of supply chain health – an index compiled by the New York Federal Reserve – showed stress in the global system eased in September to the lowest level since December 2020. The regional bank’s Global Supply Pressure Index tracks data on shipping costs, delivery times, backlogs and other statistics into a single measure compared to historic norms. The September report marked the fifth straight month of declines in the index. “If you talk to an average company, there’s a lot less concern about shortages now than there was six months ago – but it’s not zero,” said Daniel Swan, a supply chain expert with consulting firm McKinsey & Co. This marks a major change from when companies couldn’t fill orders because they couldn’t find components to build goods or the trucks to transport them. The challenge now, said Swan, is that it’s unclear what will happen with demand. “Many producers can get all or most of what they need,” he said. “But the demand outlook is less clear.” This uncertainty is also creating headaches for companies that now find themselves holding too much inventory — the opposite problem they faced not long ago, when consumers stuck at home during the pandemic were spending heavily on goods like furniture and appliances. Arnold Kamler, chief executive of bicycle manufacturer Kent International in Fairfield, New Jersey, said that the price of many of the commodities he needs – like steel, aluminum, and plastic – are coming down. And that should eventually help him. But right now, his two U.S. warehouses are full, and he’s cut back on ordering more goods from the Far East, so he’s not able to benefit as much from lower shipping costs either. “The good news for me is that bicycles aren’t strawberries – they don’t go bad,” he said. Back at Graco, Ehresmann said he can now more easily get plastic resins that were in short supply during the darkest days of the pandemic. But some of the chemicals he needs to add to the resins to produce finished plastic are still scarce. And he has yet to see big overall savings. The price of many items, including carbon steel and aluminum, are down – but those decreases are offset by increases in labor and, until recently, fuel costs. “The inflation flywheel,” he said, “just keeps spinning.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Timothy Aeppel; Editing by Dan Burns and Andrea Ricci Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Amazfit GTS 4 Review: Big Display Packed With Features The Indian Express
Amazfit GTS 4 Review: Big Display Packed With Features The Indian Express
Amazfit GTS 4 Review: Big Display, Packed With Features – The Indian Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/amazfit-gts-4-review-big-display-packed-with-features-the-indian-express/ Just how big should the display of your ‘smartwatch’ be? The answer will naturally depend on user preference. But lately, I’ve noticed that smartwatch displays across price segments are getting bigger. And the latest Amazfit GTS 4 is one such example, given it has a 1.75-inch display. For users, this bigger display has its pros and cons. Sure, the bigger screen means more information is available when you glance at the screen. But for those with slender wrists, some big-screened watches don’t look so good. Nor are they always comfortable to wear. But the Amazfit GTS 4 tries to offer a bigger screen while looking stylish and sporting a lighter weight. Here’s my review. Amazfit GTS 4 review: What’s good? The Amazfit GTS 4 has a 1.75-inch AMOLED display, which is bright and works well no matter the lighting conditions. The GTS 4 comes with a gold-coloured aluminium body and a dedicated rotatable button on the side. The plastic band is white in colour– though more of a beige colour and not stark white. Amazfit GTS 4 comes with lot of features, including bloody oxygen monitoring, heart-rate monitoring, etc. (Image credit: Shruti Dhapola/Indian Express) I liked the look of this smartwatch, which looks premium the moment you take it out of the box. The band itself is comfortable to wear. I say this as someone who wears it tightly. What surprised me about the Amazfit GTS 4 is how light the watch is despite the big display– it weighs 27 grams with the strap. In contrast, my Apple Watch Series 8 is 31.9 grams. The GTS 4 appears to have a good build quality so far. However, I have noticed a few minor scratches on display, so I would suggest you use this carefully. And yes, the display is large for my hands. But I found this a comfortable device to wear, including to sleep, which was surprising. I typically find it impossible to sleep with a smartwatch. The watch supports of sports and exercise modes. (Image credit: Shruti Dhapola/Indian Express) Like other Amazfit watches, the GTS 4 is compatible with both iOS and Android and needs to be used with the Zepp Health app. The watch supports 150 plus sports modes. It also comes with dual-band GPS, as well as the ability to import routes for those on hikes. That latter bit is not something I’ve used, but the fitness aspect of the watch is top-notch. I found the GTS 4 accurate when it came to tracking daily steps and other fitness aspects. I also used this for tracking other workout sessions–such as strength training– and my walk/jogs outside. The data was largely in line with what my Apple Watch Series 8 displayed. This watch also comes with a 5 ATM water resistance rating, which means you can take this for a swim. Unfortunately, I was unable to test this aspect. The watch has dual band GPS as well. (Image credit: Shruti Dhapola/Indian Express) The watch also comes with heart-rate monitoring, and blood oxygen monitoring. The number displayed for the latter was in line with what a medical-grade device showed at the moment. But remember that these numbers are not to be used for a medical diagnosis. Amazfit has also done a good job ensuring the watch comes with several smart features. It also comes with an option to store music on the device, along with support for Alexa. The watch will also display notifications from most apps, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. You can dismiss these from the watch screen itself. It will also warn you when you’ve been sitting for too long, and will encourage you to watch. The sleep tracking on the watch is also accurate, as I could see in the app. It managed to capture accurate sleep and wake times. The results of the blood oxygen monitoring on the Amazfit GTS 4. (Image credit: Shruti Dhapola/Indian Express) The battery life on the GTS 4 is promised as around eight days, though if you are using GPS continuously, this will drop drastically. The watch lasted around 4-5 days for me, given the flood of notifications, exercise tracking, etc. Amazfit has bundled its own charger with the watch, so yes, make sure you keep it safe. The watch takes around two hours to charge. Data from the Zepp app (L to R) Data from an exercises session, followed one from a walk. The last two screenshots show the in-depth sleep data. (Image credit: Shruti Dhapola/Indian Express) Amazfit GTS 4 review: What’s not good? The watch has a speaker, and if your phone is connected via Bluetooth, you can take calls on this easily. But the feature did not work for me. The Zepp app requires you to connect the watch separately to the Bluetooth settings of your device — a second address also shows up in the list of devices available. I followed the steps to pair the watch, but for some reason, it didn’t work for me. I saw a message saying pairing had failed, though my phone’s Bluetooth settings showed the second address was paired correctly. I’m not sure why this issue took place, but it could need a software update to fix this problem. Amazfit GTS 4 review: Should you get it? Yes, if you don’t mind paying a premium for a smartwatch and want a slightly more stylish design. The Amazfit GTS 4 scores on style, design and package. The watch also has several smart features. The only problem is that the brand itself has several cheaper options with similar features, which might be more appealing to some users.

More info Unless a cruise departs from the UK, cruise passengers will often have to start their holiday with a flight. But passengers will need to take care when they book a cruise holiday. One new cruise passenger asked Reddit: “Is it safe to fly into port the morning of the day of departure? “And if so, what time should you plan on arriving?” Cruise passengers can choose to book their flights with the cruise line which may be cheaper. However, if guests want to organise their own flights they will be able to pick the departure time and airport. READ MORE: Selfie horror as tourists kill baby seal – ‘worst thing we’ve seen’ Passengers have been warned not to fly on the day of their cruise (Image: Getty) The majority of passengers warned guests not to fly to the departure city on the day of the cruise. One said: “I have done that once, do not recommend it. Unbelievably stressful, especially when for some reason you can’t get an Uber to the port.” Cruise ports are often a long way from the airport and passengers may struggle to arrange their own transport. In some countries, taxi services such as Uber aren’t readily available or may be very busy at the airport. DON’T MISS Another passenger added: “We missed our embarkation in 2019. Thought we had lots of time. “Our first flight was delayed, causing us to miss our connection, arriving in Montreal with no flights to get us there before the ship left.” A flight delay could mess up a passenger’s journey and cause them to miss their embarkation time. If this happens, passengers will normally need to travel to the next port to catch the ship which will be at their own expense. We always save up to fly in the day before and stay at a nearby hotel. “If you have the budget I highly recommend you do that. It could save you a lot of unnecessary stress.” Staying at a port hotel the night before the cruise leaves will ensure passengers catch the ship. Some cruise lines might be able to offer passengers deals on hotels or guests could spend a few days in the departing city. The largest cruise ports (Image: Express) One passenger who said they had cruised over 25 times said they always fly in the day before the cruise. They advised: “This rule comes from experience at the enormous stress of missing or almost missing a cruise ship. “When you book with a cruise line, you don’t have the benefit of changes unless you pay a fee. “The positive is if you miss the cruise and purchase through the cruise line, they will get you to the next port. Remember, you miss a day or two of your vacation though.”

Highlands And Islands Household Survey Highlights Investment Needs Scottish Business News
Highlands And Islands Household Survey Highlights Investment Needs Scottish Business News
Highlands And Islands Household Survey Highlights Investment Needs – Scottish Business News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/highlands-and-islands-household-survey-highlights-investment-needs-scottish-business-news/ SUSTAINED and flexible investment is required in services, housing, transport and digital connectivity in the Highlands and Islands, to realise economic opportunity and ensure a just transition to net zero. This is according to Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Scotland’s development agency for the region. HIE has today (12 October) published the findings of its My Life in the Highlands and Islands survey, carried out by IPSOS at the start of the year. More than 5,300 people over the age of 16 living in 4,442 households across the region responded to the study. The vast majority (88%) said they take pride in living in their local area, and more than half (55%) take part in local activities. Quality of life was highlighted by more than a third 36%) as one of the main reasons to move into the region, along with to take up a job (26%) and to be close to family (23%). While 73% said they either don’t ever intend to move away (50%) or plan to stay at least another five years (23%), around half (47%) of those aged 16-29 said they do plan to move away within five years. The survey also raised a series of issues facing communities in the region, including access to health services, issues with digital connectivity and an over reliance on fossil fuels and cars. While 95% of households have access in person to a GP within a 20-minute drive (excluding those who don’t know), this reduces to 81% for physiotherapists and dentists and 66% for mental health services. Access is more limited for households in remote rural areas. Of those living in remote rural communities, 37% have to drive at least 20 minutes to the nearest supermarket and 29% for a bank or mobile bank. Access to superfast broadband has increased from 64% in 2016 to 82.8%, though this is still noticeably less than the UK figure of 97.3%. Around a fifth (21%) of households in the region cannot stream a TV programme or film without it buffering, rising to 32% in Caithness and Sutherland and 29% in Shetland. Factors that could adversely affect Scotland’s progress towards the country’s ambitious net zero targets include a heavy reliance on cars for day-to-day living, with 87% owning at least one car and 44% owning two or more. Only 7% of respondents said they had bought an electric vehicle and just 6% said they were planning to do so. The main barriers to making the switch are cost, battery range and perceived lack of charging points. The survey also shows that 71% of households have already made energy efficiency improvements, mainly installing loft insulation or double- or triple-glazing. A further 36% are planning improvements over the next two to three years, most commonly having a smart meter fitted, installing a new boiler or heating system, or draught-proofing. Relatively few are using green technologies to heat their homes (13%) or have plans to switch fuel type (6%). More than a fifth (22%) say they would like a ‘green’ job that helps the environment or helps prevent climate change. Meanwhile more people (46%) believed their current job would be affected by the need to reduce carbon emissions than those who didn’t (42%). Housing was raised as a major issue. While 90% said their home meets their own needs very or fairly well, 76% agreed there aren’t enough affordable houses for rent or to buy locally. Young people, households with children and those in island and remote rural communities are more likely to perceive housing challenges. Two thirds (65%) say they are happy in their current job, while half (49%) are paid at least the real living wage. Of those in work, a fifth (19%) are self-employed, higher than nationally, and a further 12% would like to start their own business. Self-employment is more common in island (24%) and remote rural (26%) communities. Around a third of respondents (34%) working in the public sector reported that they moved to the region to take up a job, which highlights the importance of such roles in supporting population attraction and retention.  HIE has shared the findings with the Convention of the Highlands and Islands and the Regional Economic Partnership. Stuart Black, HIE’s chief executive, said: “We are extremely grateful to everyone who took part in this survey. It’s a fascinating and extremely useful report that provides valuable insight into what it really means to live and work in the Highlands and Islands, where the strengths are and the vulnerabilities. “It quantifies the challenges and inequalities, while clarifying some of the factors that residents really value about the region. “There are many well documented advantages and opportunities, particularly around renewable energy and the just transition to net zero. These qualities will serve communities and the economy, and indeed the country, extremely well if we can tap into them effectively. “What this report makes clear is that sustained and flexible investment will be required in order to make that happen. It will serve as a vital reference across the public sector, informing policy development and investment decisions at local, regional and national levels in line with the National Strategy for Economic Transformation.” Deputy First Minister John Swinney said:  “I am grateful to Highlands and Islands Enterprise for their work on the survey and for sharing its insights with the Regional Economic Partnership, and the Convention of the Highlands and Islands. “The survey shows the importance of supporting people in our communities across Scotland, whilst highlighting the opportunities and challenges often faced. We will carefully consider the findings of the survey and continue to work closely with our partners through the Convention and the Regional Economic Partnership to make the most of the opportunities we have to grow our economy across the Highlands and Islands.”

October 13, 2022 International University of Health and Welfare, Mita Hospital, Tokyo, employs Philips’ augmented reality (AR) surgical navigation solution to treat first patients in Japan, helping to bring the patient benefits of minimally-invasive spine surgery to Japan’s aging population New data published in European Spine Journal on the clinical use of ClarifEye showed a 98% accuracy of pedicle screw placement during minimally invasive procedures, comparable to values reported in literature for other navigation and robotic systems Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced expanded rollout of its augmented reality (AR) surgical navigation solution – ClarifEye – to Japan, highlighting positive results in the first patients treated by the International University of Health and Welfare, Mita Hospital (Tokyo, Japan) using this innovative 3D AR solution. Installed on a Philips interventional X-ray system in a hybrid operating room at Mita Hospital, ClarifEye helped the hospital’s orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ken Ishii to successfully treat patients with spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spaces in the spine) and scoliosis (sideways curvature of the spine) via minimally-invasive image-guided procedures. Due to its aging population, the number of spine surgeries performed each year in Japan continues to increase. Lumbar spinal canal stenosis, the most common spinal disease, is currently found in approximately 10.8% of the country’s 70-79 year olds [1]. In patients with severe symptoms, surgical procedures are typically performed, including excision of the compressed area and fixation of the bone with screws or other fixtures. Traditionally, these fixation devices have been placed through a large incision with direct observation of the affected vertebra. However, they are now increasingly being placed via minimally-invasive procedures performed through small incisions, minimizing bleeding and soft tissue damage, reducing postoperative pain, and making treatment available to patients at risk from the trauma of open surgery. Philips’ augmented reality surgical navigation solution – ClarifEye – combines 2D and 3D visualizations at low X-ray dose with 3D AR navigation into one system. It enables surgeons to define and navigate critical trajectories for precise device placement while avoiding damage to fragile neurological and vascular structures close to the patient’s spine. “The benefit of performing spine surgery in the Hybrid OR includes the ability to acquire 3D CT images at low dose, having a lot of space, and being able to use the large monitor,” said Dr. Ken Ishii, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, International University of Health and Welfare, Mita Hospital. “The addition of a new navigation system helps to create an even safer surgical environment. Compared to existing navigation systems, ClarifEye has no reference frame-related errors, and it’s wonderful that it achieves real time imaging with pedicle segmentation. ClarifEye is a new technology that truly offers minimally invasive surgery for patients and clinical staff.” “Mita Hospital’s positive experience of using ClarifEye to deliver the benefits of minimally-invasive therapy to its spine patients mirrors that of hospitals in Europe and the Middle East who also recently adopted the system,” said Karim Boussebaa, General Manager Image Guided Therapy Systems at Philips. “ClarifEye adds a new dimension in surgical precision for patients. It is a great example of how we are innovating procedures and helping clinicians to deliver on the Quadruple Aim of better health outcomes, improved patient and staff experiences, and lower cost of care.” ClarifEye’s live-video computer vision and AR technology uses non-invasive position markers applied to the patient’s skin to track patient positioning and overlays the resultant live video onto a 3D cone-beam CT of the patient’s spinal column. It enables surgeons to visualize the outside and inside of the patient in the same image, together with the planned and real-time trajectory of a Philips ClarifEye needle, without the need for live X-ray imaging. The system eliminates the cumbersome reference frames used by other systems, giving surgeons unimpeded access to the patient.      New data in European Spine Journal Intra-operative image guidance has been shown to increase clinical accuracy and improve outcomes, with patients subject to fewer revision surgeries compared to the previous standard of care [2,3]. Data published in Scientific Reports demonstrated that in open deformity cases, ClarifEye had a better accuracy than similar surgeries performed by the same surgeon with no help from intra-operative navigation (94% vs 89.6%) [4]. In addition, data published in European Spine Journal on the clinical use of ClarifEye for minimal invasive procedures showed a 98% accuracy of pedicle screw placement, which is comparable to values reported in literature for other navigation and robotic systems [5]. Physicians sharing experiences during expert session at EUROSPINE On 20 October at 12.15-13.15 CET Philips is organizing an expert session (also available online) during the EUROSPINE lunch symposia program. Dr. Peiró, Pediatric spine surgeon at Barcelona Children’s Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and Dr. Scarone, neurosurgeon at Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC) Lugano [6], Switzerland will both share their experience with the hybrid OR and using Philips’ innovative navigation technology for minimally invasive procedures. Here Is The Latest SEC Sports News From The Associated Press – Beckley Register-Herald https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/here-is-the-latest-sec-sports-news-from-the-associated-press-beckley-register-herald/ UNDATED (AP) — Alabama’s Will Anderson and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker and Josh Heupel are some of the Southeastern Conference’s top performers so far this season. Anderson is the unanimous pick as The Associated Press’ top SEC defensive player at the midway point. Hooker was voted as the top offensive player and Heupel was the unanimous choice as top SEC coach of the first half. The midseason awards were voted on by AP reporters covering the SEC. The third-ranked Crimson Tide and sixth-ranked Volunteers play this weekend in Knoxville. UNDATED (AP) — This weekend in college football includes a season-high six games matching teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Three of those games also match unbeaten teams. They include No. 3 Alabama at No. 6 Tennessee; No. 10 Penn State at No. 5 Michigan; and No. 8 Oklahoma State at No. 13 TCU. By Saturday night, the championship picture could be very different. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo calls it a Super Saturday. LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky coach John Calipari says on social media that consensus national player of the year Oscar Tshiebwe will have a “minor” 15-minute procedure to “clean some things up” in his knee. Calipari did not specify in a Twitter post on Tuesday which knee will be treated. The school did not have specifics on how long Tshiebwe will be out. The coach said he sat the 6-foot-9 senior forward for practices on Saturday and Monday but that Tshiebwe pushed to participate in Sunday’s pro day workout before NBA scouts in what Calipari described as “an unbelievable performance.” UNDATED (AP) — It could well be among the marquee quarterback matchups of the season: Alabama’s Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young versus Tennessee’s rising star Hendon Hooker. Young’s sprained right shoulder was being re-evaluated, but coach Nick Saban seemed somewhat optimistic about his status for the Saturday’s game. Hooker and Young are still among the leading Heisman Trophy candidates. Jalen Milroe started for Alabama in a squeaker over Texas A&M. UNDATED (AP) — Ole Miss’ Jonathan Mingo is coming off of the biggest game of his career. He broke the receiving record set by current New York Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore by getting 247 yards against Vanderbilt. It was the most yards of any FBS player in a game this season and vaulted Mingo into the Southeastern Conference lead with 507 yards entering Saturday’s game with Auburn. Mingo has battled injury in his career and been overshadowed by 1,000-yard receivers Moore and Dontario Drummond. Now, he’s among the elites for No. 9 Ole Miss. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. As a content creator and singer, WOLF makes performing easy while also empowering me with the tools I need to pursue a career in the creative economy. With the help of the WOLFStars programme, I have been able to progress commercially but also join a supportive and interactive community of Arabic fans and content creators.”

Crypto News Today: What Are The Top 3 Under-Hyped Crypto Coins Today – Stellar, Shiba Inu, And Moshnake? | – Bitcoinist https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-today-what-are-the-top-3-under-hyped-crypto-coins-today-stellar-shiba-inu-and-moshnake-bitcoinist/ The coin market is similar to other financial markets worldwide. Every experienced trader knows the importance of hype and how it can spur an asset to new heights. As a result, most traders are found purchasing coins with plenty of hype around them. While this may seem like a sound strategy, an interesting thing to note is that occasionally certain coins spring out of nowhere and take over the market space. Many times, these explosive price movements occur when no one is paying attention. If you’re interested in trying another trading strategy, purchasing coins that are not the center of the news and waiting for them to bloom, this piece is for you. You’ll find a list of crypto tokens that are currently underhyped but with the potential for much more. Stellar An interesting thing to note about the coin market is that several innovative digital assets exist. Each of them offers something different. While you’ll find coins that are satisfied with solely being used as a means of payment and transfer of assets, others provide a unique type of utility. Stellar is one of those projects introducing an entirely different set of features to the coin market. This cryptocurrency is designed to support payment systems worldwide. It aims to be the first blockchain-based solution to unite the traditional financial system. Think of the near-limitless potential that traditional financial institutions would enjoy if their transactions could be processed seamlessly without lengthy confirmations. This means that Stellar can be used to process cryptocurrency transactions. Stellar was a decentralized protocol created by the Stellar Development Foundation. XLM is the token that powers this decentralized protocol. Through token burns, the Stellar Development Foundation plans to maintain a high price of its digital asset. These burns will reduce the overall total supply of Stellar. Shiba Inu Shiba Inu was among the most popular meme coins on the coin market. But the hype around it has died down significantly. After Shiba Inu proved it could compete with Dogecoin, many users started flocking to it. They believed that Shiba Inu would be the next top coin in the crypto space. There were some interesting things to note about Shiba Inu. To start with, Shiba Inu adopts a community-driven approach. This means that a community of users will determine its growth and development. Today, there are more than five hundred thousand users on Shiba Inu, and there are still more on the way. This active community of users is referred to as the Shiba Army. Also, Shiba Inu’s developers recognized some of the deficiencies of Dogecoin.
