Julie Grow Denton: Vote For Me For State Supreme Court Justice – Syracuse.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/julie-grow-denton-vote-for-me-for-state-supreme-court-justice-syracuse-com/
Editor’s note: On Nov. 8, eight candidates are competing for four seats on New York state Supreme Court bench in the Fifth Judicial District, comprised of Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga and Oswego Counties. Supreme Court is the state’s highest trial court for civil and criminal matters. The office has a term of 14 years and pays $210,900 a year. To help voters make an educated choice, we invited the candidates to submit a letter to voters explaining why they think they are the best person for the job. Here is the letter by Julie Grow Denton, one of four candidates running on the Republican and Conservative party lines.
Harvard Law School with honors. Confidential law clerk. Private practitioner. Community volunteer. Disney University. These varied experiences have shaped my career in such a way that I know I would love working as your next state Supreme Court justice — and that I can make you proud while doing so.
I hope you will discern much about my work ethic from my Harvard law degree, which was preceded by a degree with honors from Bucknell University. As discussed below, I believe I have employed this same work ethic throughout my 25-year legal career in Central New York, where I was born and raised.
I currently serve as the confidential law clerk to Oneida County Surrogate Gigliotti, who is also an Acting Supreme Court justice. I previously clerked for federal Judges Cardamone (Utica) and Scullin (Syracuse). My responsibilities have included help with reviewing papers, researching the law, identifying insightful questions, and drafting timely and well-reasoned decisions. Each of these judges serves as a great example of a respected jurist.
I practiced law nearly 14 years with my family firm in Rome. This experience helped me understand the perspective of clients who want to tell their stories and be heard, both by their lawyer and the judge handling their case.
Over the past 20 years, I have participated on volunteer boards focusing on healthcare, libraries, education, economic development and the underprivileged, which deepened my connections with our communities. I have been honored to be appointed to two professional committees serving our judicial district.
I worked at Walt Disney World immediately after college. Lessons learned at Disney University improved my awareness of others by treating each guest of the park as the most important person there. Clients want to be made to feel the same way. To them, their case has the highest priority.
The quality of a candidate’s experience matters, and I think I present the kind of experience in which you can take great pride. Others appear to agree. My qualifications have been presented to and vetted by numerous organizations. The CNY Women’s Bar Association rated me “highly qualified” based on such factors as temperament, reputation, diligence, impartiality, legal ability, experience and writing. I am the only Supreme Court candidate to be “commended” by this same association for my attitude toward gender neutrality and for actively contributing to the promotion of gender equality in the practice of law. In addition, the Onondaga and Oneida County Bar Associations rated me “highly qualified,” and the Oswego County Bar Association rated me “recommended as qualified.” I have received the endorsements of the Veterans Party of Onondaga County, the NYS Troopers PBA, the NYS Police Investigators Association, the Onondaga County Deputy Sheriffs’ Police Association and the local Teamsters union.
Summarizing a lifetime in 500 words is challenging. Nevertheless, I hope I have adequately conveyed the nature of my qualifications, experience, love for the law and respect for others. I humbly ask for your vote. It would be an honor to serve our communities as a judge.
