High School Football Rankings: Mater Dei New No. 1 In MaxPreps Top 25 After 17-7 Win Over St. John Bosco – MaxPreps https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/high-school-football-rankings-mater-dei-new-no-1-in-maxpreps-top-25-after-17-7-win-over-st-john-bosco-maxpreps/ Last year’s national champion — Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) — owns the No. 1 spot in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings once again after beating St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) 17-7 Friday night. Junior quarterback Elijah Brown completed 10 of 18 passes for 117 yards to go with a rushing score, helping the Monarchs earn their 24th consecutive victory. After St. John Bosco scored a touchdown to tie it at 7-7 late in the third quarter, Brown led the Monarchs on a long drive that resulted in a 22-yard field goal from Andre Medina. That ended up being the game-winning score. Sophomore running back Jordon Davison put the game on ice with a 38-yard touchdown run with just over a minute remaining. The loss dropped Bosco to No. 4 but the Braves are still national championship contenders. There’s a good chance St. John Bosco and Mater Dei will meet again in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game at the Rose Bowl on Nov. 25. St. Frances is 5-0 with all five wins coming on the road. The Panthers have already traveled over 8,000 miles this season while banking wins over the top-ranked teams in Illinois, South Carolina and Hawaii. The other two wins came against DeSoto, one of the best teams Texas, and defending Florida 8A state champ Venice. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) made a nice jump in the rankings to No. 5. The Gaels played Mater Dei closer than anyone during the Monarchs’ 24-game win streak with a 24-21 loss back in late August. Gorman has won six in a row since that setback, outscoring the opposition 361-24. Junior quarterback Micah Alejado has thrown for 1,974 yards and has 30 touchdown passes without an interception. He is also completing over 76 percent of his passes. The biggest game this week is in Georgia as No. 8 Buford hosts No. 18 Mill Creek (Hoschton) in the lone MaxPreps Top 25 matchup. Both were idle last week and are 6-0 this season. Caleb Downs of Mill Creek and Justice Haynes of Buford have emerged as candidates for the 2022 MaxPreps National Player of the Year award. Both are 2023 Alabama commits. Photo: Paul Rodriguez Elijah Brown celebrates with teammates after leading Mater Dei to its 24th consecutive victory Friday night over then-No. 1 St. John Bosco. 7 Costa Rica Vacations For Every Travel Style The Washington Post
7 Costa Rica Vacations For Every Travel Style The Washington Post
7 Costa Rica Vacations For Every Travel Style – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/7-costa-rica-vacations-for-every-travel-style-the-washington-post/ Petite in size but wealthy in natural wonders, Costa Rica is one of the most versatile vacation spots in the world. Whether you’re into sandy beaches and rolling hillside farms or misty cloud forests and active volcanoes, there are options aplenty for relaxation and adventure. The Central American country was already a popular travel destination before the pandemic, but its array of outdoor attractions and early moves to relax entry requirements drove a surge in interest. “Costa Rica is definitely one of our hottest destinations right now,” says Alisa Cohen, founder of the boutique travel agency Luxe Traveler Club. “It’s easy to get to, there’s amazing hotels, there’s tons for every age — especially if you have kids — to do.” With all of Costa Rica’s potential, where should you go? Most travel experts who book trips to Costa Rica agree: Don’t spend your time in one place. “We always say split it,” says Nicki Wheeler, a British expat who’s lived in Costa Rica since 2004 and owns the travel company Sendero Adventures. Wheeler recommends visitors get away from chain hotels and mainstream sites. With so much nature to explore, she says, they should “be adventurous. Do things maybe that you wouldn’t do at home.” 1 For a wellness retreat: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca Return to menu While many different areas in Costa Rica cater to travelers who want a vacation focused on their health and well-being, Jorge Varela, a private guide for ToursByLocals, recommends renting a house in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in southeast Costa Rica. There you’ll find beautiful rainforest, access to the Caribbean Sea, yoga, mindfulness and meditation workshops and restaurants serving organic food. “Something that I like about this area is they don’t have chain or big hotels,” he says. “They have boutique hotels and bungalows in the middle of the forest.” Alternatively, Sánchez says the Valle del General has a lot of “glamping” and also boasts boutique hotels that focus on wellness. Wheeler is a fan of retreats in Golfo Dulce, a tropical fjord in the Osa Peninsula, her favorite area in Costa Rica. “This is still very rustic, still very local,” she says of the area. As you look for a wellness retreat, or any accommodation, tour and activity in Costa Rica, opt for Costa Rican-owned businesses to best support the local community. “If you go to the international chains, the main percentage of the profit goes out of the country,” says Pabrö Sánchez, a travel guide and chef who takes clients on tailor-made trips for his company Sapoa Adventures. 2 For beaches: Take your pick of Caribbean or Pacific Return to menu With nearly 800 miles of coastline, Costa Rica boasts many distinct beaches. The Pacific side tends to get more attention thanks to its world-class surf spots, but the Caribbean coast dazzles, too. “That’s where you’ll find the most beautiful coastline in Costa Rica,” Varela says of the country’s southern Caribbean region, listing off “Champagne-colored sand, turquoise waters, coral reefs good for snorkeling, colorful schools of fish.” Wheeler says Pacific beaches, “especially in the Guanacaste area” to the north, “are just so beautiful … probably some of the best in the world.” “There’s everything from little touristy towns to completely deserted beaches,” she adds. On the Pacific coast, Varela recommends staying around Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio or Playa Flamingo, known for its pinkish sand and good hotels. If you do pick the Caribbean side, Varela says to go between August and November to catch the best weather, even if that means it’s the rainy season elsewhere. “You have sunny mornings and afternoon rain,” he says. “As long as there’s not a storm, you can be in the hot springs while it’s raining; the contrast feels amazing.” Return to menu While Costa Rica isn’t famous for its gastronomy, Wheeler says recent changes to the food scene include new takes on local ingredients and traditions. “It’s absolutely amazing, especially in San José,” she says. Varela says Barrio Escalante is the best neighborhood for food lovers, where “there are literally seven to 10 blocks with restaurants, pubs, specialty coffee shops.” He says there are also spots for “more refined” cooking as well as sodas, the name for small local restaurants, where you can find “more traditional tapas we call bocas.” Even if you want to spend time eating your way through San José, Sánchez recommends staying outside of the city proper. Areas in the nearby highlands like Alajuela and Heredia have fewer crowds and better views. Sánchez says clients have had life-changing experiences going with him to native Indigenous communities to harvest ingredients together — sometimes even butchering an animal they’ll eat — and cooking it in their homes. “It’s magical,” Sánchez says. “People cry.” 4 For zip-lines and volcano hikes: Corcovado National Park Return to menu Costa Rica is synonymous with adventure tourism. “That’s what we’re good at,” Wheeler says, noting the country’s famous surf, national parks, zip-lining and volcano trekking. Plus, “we have the Pacuare River, which is one of the top 10 rivers in the world for white-water rafting,” she says. At Corcovado National Park, “they do two- or three-night trips where you go live with the park rangers,” she says. “ … It’s very, very remote and it’s definitely one of the places that hosts most of the wildlife species of Costa Rica.” Surfers will want to hit the Pacific coast. For beginners, Sánchez suggests the towns of Nosara, Malpaís or Santa Teresa. The latter is “extremely good,” for different types of breaks, he says. 5 For families: La Fortuna Return to menu Varela and Wheeler say families will find activities for all ages in La Fortuna. “It’s an activity hub,” Wheeler says, listing options like tours of chocolate farms, visiting hot springs and Arenal Volcano National Park. For a beach, Varela sends families to Playa Hermosa because it’s easily accessible from the Liberia Guanacaste Airport (LIR); has calm, swimmable water; and is good for snorkeling. Varela says families can also take boat rides from Playa Hermosa to secluded beaches and islands. Sánchez, who has a 5-year-old daughter, says travelers will find much of Costa Rica to be family-friendly (except for the south Caribbean, where the hiking may be too intense). If he had to narrow it down, Sánchez would send families to the North Pacific region for horseback riding, hiking and tree-climbing. 6 For wildlife: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Return to menu To see wild animals, head to the misty forest of Monteverde, home to hundreds of species of birds, monkeys, bats, reptiles and amphibians, porcupines and sloths. “The hikes in Monteverde Cloud Forest are amazing,” Wheeler says. “Especially you go early in the morning.” Sánchez says travelers should be wary of places that are advertised as animal sanctuaries but are really just zoos built for tourists to take photos with animals. The government has a #StopAnimalSelfies campaign encouraging travelers to avoid animals that have been captured for photo opps. Wheeler says a way to tell the difference between a true sanctuary and a sham is that a genuine place will have a rehabilitation program and records of its releases. “Any certified tour guide here will be completely opposed to any kind of activity involving animal selfies,” Wheeler says. “We have so much wildlife in our tiny country that you will be able to take photos as long as they are not interrupting their natural processes.” 7 For something off the beaten path: The Osa Peninsula Return to menu Costa Rica has plenty of hidden gems, but they’re not simple to reach. For example, there’s the Osa Peninsula at the southernmost tip of the country near the Panama border. Varela suggests splurging on an ecolodge like La Paloma on the peninsula’s Drake Bay, where the nature is pristine. “It’s remote and harder to get to … and a little bit more expensive than more-touristy areas,” he says. That’s on purpose: Those extra barriers for entry help prevent overtourism. For a unique experience, Sánchez says you’ll have to hire a local guide. “We have a four or five places that we do not promote the names of for people to come on their own,” he says. “We’ve tried to keep it kind of hidden — a lot of people really appreciate not seeing other tourists around.”

My Third COVID-19 Infection: Why Reinfection Can Be Anything But Mild Gavi The Vaccine Alliance
My Third COVID-19 Infection: Why Reinfection Can Be Anything But Mild Gavi The Vaccine Alliance
My Third COVID-19 Infection: Why Reinfection Can Be Anything But Mild – Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/my-third-covid-19-infection-why-reinfection-can-be-anything-but-mild-gavi-the-vaccine-alliance/ As the pandemic approaches its third anniversary, most people are well and truly bored with COVID-19. With so many of us having recovered from at least one COVID-19 infection, not to mention being vaccinated and/or boosted, it is seductive to believe that catching it again won’t matter. I’ve been to pubs and parties, packed myself onto public transport without a facemask, and entertained various guests with ‘colds’. But having just experienced COVID for the third time, I am regretting letting my guard down. This is particularly true in the Omicron era, where we’re encouraged to believe that COVID-19 is ‘nothing but a minor sniffle’ and we must ‘learn to live with the virus’. I too have been enjoying largely living life as if the pandemic never happened in recent weeks and months. I’ve been to pubs and parties, packed myself onto public transport without a facemask, and entertained various guests with ‘colds’. But having just experienced COVID for the third time, I am regretting letting my guard down. I am not advocating a return to full or even partial lockdowns; I desperately want my kids to continue attending school, and I don’t think pubs or restaurants need to stop serving customers indoors either. But as evidence mounts that northern hemisphere countries could experience a new wave of COVID-19 infections as winter approaches, combined with the return of influenza and other everyday illnesses, the onus is on everyone to do what they can to keep themselves – and each other – healthy. COVID-19 reinfection This latest bout of COVID-19, was my third in less than three years. The first, in March 2020, was characterised by a persistent cough and chest pains; the second, in June 2021, by fatigue and loss of taste and smell (I still suffer from “parosmia”). Having recovered from these infections, and been vaccinated, and boosted – twice – I had assumed that were I to catch it again, any illness would be negligible. Ever since the rise of Omicron, scientists have talked about its relative mildness – particularly in healthy people who have been vaccinated, like me. But my third experience of COVID-19 has been my worst yet. Part of the problem, I think, is that the medical description of “mild illness” is at odds with the normal perception of “mild”, such as with mild weather or mild cheese. When doctors and scientists talk about “mild COVID-19”, what they mean is “not severe enough to cause breathing difficulties”. This time, I experienced various “cold-like” symptoms – sore throat, sneezing, runny nose – but it was the feverishness and headaches that immobilised me in bed for three days, unable to cook, do anything for my kids, or work. Fortunately, I am gradually starting to feel better, but my experience of “mild COVID” was easily on par with flu – an illness I previously vowed never to catch again. The possibility of going through it all again next year, assuming that’s what ‘living with coronavirus’ means, is already filling me with dread. Waning immunity Whereas at the start of the pandemic, nobody had any immunity to SARS-CoV-2, nearly three years on, everyone’s immune systems are on a slightly different learning curve. Unfortunately, current COVID-19 vaccines still only top-up people’s immune protection for a limited period before their antibody levels begin to drop. They will still be largely protected against severe disease and death, but waning antibodies increase individuals’ susceptibility to reinfection. Although at the extreme end of the spectrum, reinfections tend to be less severe than people’s first brush with SARS-CoV-2, data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics have suggested that the proportion of people reporting symptoms during reinfection varies according to which variants they have been infected with before. When they were infected, relative to their last COVID-19 infection or vaccination, could also influence their symptom severity, because levels of protective antibodies gradually diminish over time. Then there’s how much virus someone is exposed to. According to Ben Krishna, a postdoctoral researcher in immunology and virology at the University of Cambridge, UK, infection with a higher dose of virus (say, if someone with COVID-19 sneezes in your face) could enable higher levels of virus to gain a foothold in the body before the immune system manages to stamp them out, resulting in more severe symptoms. Booster campaign My last COVID-19 booster was in June, so I was surprised to have come down with it again so soon. My experience shows that boosters do not offer total protection from the disease even though they are very effective in preventing severe disease and death. COVID-19 vaccines have had a massive impact on people’s risk of being hospitalised with or dying from the disease, and are the reason many countries have largely been able to return to normal life, without hospitals being overwhelmed.  Unfortunately, current COVID-19 vaccines still only top-up people’s immune protection for a limited period before their antibody levels begin to drop. They will still be largely protected against severe disease and death, but waning antibodies increase individuals’ susceptibility to reinfection. Unlike the COVID-19 waves we experienced during 2020 and 2021, where a single variant, such as Delta, rapidly outcompeted all others and spread across the world, virologists are currently tracking the growth of multiple subvariants The rationale for some countries launching COVID-19 booster campaigns in the coming weeks and months is to temporarily boost antibodies, reducing the risk of a sharp increase in severe cases, precisely when hospitals are likely to be grappling with a spike in influenza admissions. It is therefore important to take up the offer of a booster vaccine, if you are offered one, but it won’t make you invincible. Viral evolution Then there’s the issue of increasingly immune-resistant subvariants. Although the WHO hasn’t assigned any new Greek letters since Omicron, the subvariant that’s making me sick is likely very different to the one that infected my husband in early March, which was itself quite different to the original BA.1 version of Omicron that emerged in November 2021. The number of new, and potentially worrying Omicron subvariants in circulation right now, is unprecedented. Unlike the COVID-19 waves we experienced during 2020 and 2021, where a single variant, such as Delta, rapidly outcompeted all others and spread across the world, virologists are currently tracking the growth of multiple subvariants, each carrying overlapping changes to the spike protein, which SARS-CoV-2 uses to grab onto, and infect human cells. Crucially, these mutations affect the ability of antibodies to recognise the virus and block it from infecting us. If you are unfortunate enough to be reinfected, it is still likely that your infection will be mild. But mild doesn’t necessarily mean trivial. Not everyone has the benefit of sick pay, or a partner who can take over all childcare duties while their other half quarantines in bed. Although vaccination and previous COVID infections have left us with other weapons against the virus, its ongoing evolution and individuals’ waning immunity means that even people who caught COVID-19 in May or June, when the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants took off, could be susceptible to reinfection with the newest crop of subvariants, assuming they continue to spread. Disruptive illness If you are unfortunate enough to be reinfected, it is still likely that your infection will be mild. But mild doesn’t necessarily mean trivial. Not everyone has the benefit of sick pay, or a partner who can take over all childcare duties while their other half quarantines in bed. Even for those lucky enough to have these things, the risk of Long COVID still looms large. COVID-19 isn’t just about individual risk. There are still plenty of people in our communities who risk being hospitalised, or developing lasting disability, if they catch COVID-19 – even if they’ve been vaccinated. This includes people who may look relatively young and healthy. Living life as if there’s no pandemic is risky – for everyone. It is also unsustainable. Widespread absences due to COVID-19, flu, or any other infection, risks there being too few teachers, delivery drivers, healthcare staff and other essential workers to keep society running as normal. Everyone wishes for a return to normal life, but behaving as if there is no COVID-19 will have consequences. Relative normality is another matter. With a few common-sense precautions – such as avoiding mixing with people if you are unwell; wearing a good quality facemask in crowded indoor spaces if local case numbers are high (particularly if you are unwell); taking a COVID-19 test if you can; getting a booster vaccine if you are offered one; and keeping indoor spaces ventilated – we can all help to keep everyone protected.

In Week 4, the Chiefs beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-31. Las Vegas finally got into the win column last week, outlasting the Denver Broncos 32-23. Kansas City is 2-2 against the spread while Las Vegas has a 1-3 ATS mark this year.  Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. ET in Kansas City. Kansas City is listed at -7 in the latest Chiefs vs. Raiders odds at Caesars Sportsbook. The over/under for total points is set at 51.5, down a half point from the opening Monday Night Football line. Before making any Raiders vs. Chiefs picks, be sure to see the NFL predictions from SportsLine’s Larry Harstein. A former lead writer for Covers and The Linemakers, Hartstein combines a vast network of Vegas sources with an analytical approach he honed while working for Pro Football Focus. Entering the 2022 NFL season, he is 427-344 all-time on NFL side picks (plus $3,764 for $100 players), including 394-330 against the spread. Hartstein went 68-50 ATS (58%) and 8-3 on money-line plays last season for a profit of $1,552. He’s also a sizzling 24-10 on his last 34 spread picks involving the Chiefs. Anybody who has been following him is way up. Now, Hartstein has set his sights on Chiefs vs. Raiders and just locked in his picks and MNF predictions. You can head to SportsLine to see his picks. Now, here are several NFL odds and betting lines for Raiders vs. Chiefs Chiefs vs. Raiders spread: Kansas City -7 Chiefs vs. Raiders over/under: 51.5 points Chiefs vs. Raiders money line: Kansas City -345, Las Vegas +270 LV: Under is 5-1 in the Raiders’ last six games following an ATS win KC: Chiefs are 7-1-1 ATS in their last nine Monday games Chiefs vs. Raiders picks: See picks here Featured Game | Kansas City Chiefs vs. Las Vegas Raiders Why the Chiefs can cover Even with Tyreek Hill now in Miami, the Chiefs still have plenty of explosive pass-catchers. Tight end Travis Kelce is a big, athletic weapon for this offense. Kelce has built terrific chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and it’s constantly on display. The Cincinnati product is very fast and fluid in his route running for someone that size (6-foot-5, 250 pounds). Kelce is tied for ninth in the NFL in catches (26), 11th in receiving yards (322) and tied for third in receiving touchdowns (3). Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (questionable, quad/hamstring) came over to Kansas City in the offseason as he looks to implement himself into the offense. Smith-Schuster has outstanding size and hands with the willingness to go over the middle. The USC product owns good field vision and provides YAC ability. He’s second on the team with 19 catches for 224 yards with 11.8 yards per reception.  Why the Raiders can cover Quarterback Derek Carr is a polished and well-rounded passer under center for Las Vegas. Carr has been a high character and smart leader for the locker room. The three-time Pro Bowl selection has the ability to make deep throws with a nice touch on mid-range passes. The Fresno State product is ninth in the league in passing yards (1,038) with six passing touchdowns. In Week 3, he went 26 of 44 for 303 yards with two passing touchdowns. Running back Josh Jacobs has been an explosive and dangerous back for the Raiders. Jacobs brings a special dynamic to the backfield with a combination of power and finesse. The 2020 Pro Bowl selection never settles and will fight his way to gain positive yards. The Alabama product is seventh in the league in carries (70) and fifth in rushing yards (336) with two rushing touchdowns. In his last outing, Jacobs finished 28 carries for 144 yards and two scores.  How to make Chiefs vs. Raiders picks Hartstein has analyzed this matchup and he’s leaning Over on the point total. In addition to it’s portability, the washer is apparently very durable and great at washing out tough stains. “I live in an apartment, and I love this washing machine,” reads one rave review. “So easy to use, and it cleaned chocolate ice cream out of a shirt. I love the fact that I do not have to wait until a machine is free to do my clothes.” No space to dry your delicates? This retractable clothesline is easy and durable and can hold even those heavy-duty items that need to be air-dried. Life just got easier — and the reviews don’t lie. “Like this product a lot and it was very easy to install and being put to great use,” reads one five-star review. “Great quality and holds clothes well. Total game changer! Easy to use, great price and works awesome!” Office This discreet and minimalist cable management box hides cords nicely and cleverly masks as decor. It also features several slots for several types of power cords, outlets, etc. The box is a hit with some 2,100 five-star ratings: “I love these boxes they were the best purchase ever they look great and they do their job and they change the space so much,” reads one rave. “I’ve hated cables chaos and before I wasn’t able to even push my microwave to the back of the wall all the way because of all the cables behind it I think it looks great really organized and it’s practical. I accidentally bought two and I’m so happy about it.” Walls or countertops an eyesore, but can’t afford a full-blown renovation? Fake it ‘til you make it with the latest craze in decor: peel and stick wallpaper. This affordable option features finishes like wood and marble to give your space a sleek finish, and comes highly recommended with a staggering 12,400 five-star ratings. “I bought this to add an accent wall in my spare bedroom,” reads one reviewer on Amazon. “It was so easy to install and the finished product looks great. This is such an easy and affordable way to change the look of any room. I’ll definitely be ordering more for my next home project.” Kitchen The chic crochet fashion trend just made its way to your kitchen with this functional and stylish fruit hammock. The cool netted design works with a variety of aesthetics, and doubles as fruit storage. That’s what we call a win-win, and apparently consumers agree: “I have really minimal counter space so fruit usually takes way too much space….this helps in an attractive way,” reads one review. “They say if you see healthy food you’ll eat it more often…so far that seems to be true.” Composting is great for the environment, but it can also be a messy, smelly business. This chic, retro compost bin solves the problem in on fell swoop. The odorless container is designed for organic and food waste in your home, made with non-smell charcoal filter that blocks and naturally keeps odor at bay in your kitchen. “I am new to composting and find this very easy to use and to dump into the neighborhood compost bin,” states a fan on Amazon. “It’s just the right size for the countertop, the carbon filter keeps it from smelling bad, and the handle makes it easy to carry and dump.” Bathroom Tired of storing your creams, ice globes, and serums in your regular fridge amongst the veggies and condiments? Enter a mini-fridge. The college dorm essential, once used to store beers and instant meals got the chicest makeover. Yes, these days mini fridges are more of a skin care essential, perfect for keeping your prized formulas and tools in great condition and ready to use. “This fridge is amazing to put your toners, serums, face masks, eye creams, and gel/water moisturizers,” writes a happy Amazon customer. “Applying cold eye creams helps de-puff the eyes. Any skin care product with vitamin C and retinol should be stored in a fridge to prevent oxidation, allowing them to last longer and work to its full potential. Anyone looking to boost their skin care routine should invest in a small fridge like this product.” Perfect for towels, bathrobes, blankets, and pajamas, this device will heat up any item within minutes. “This is a great product,” reads one five-star review. “I will never be able to get out of a shower and not have a warm towel waiting! The towel warms to perfection, not too hot and keeps the heat long enough. I like using body oil in the shower and then immediately wrap my self in a warm towel. This keeps my skin soft for the entire day. So happy I bought this product! Also I can fit two large fluffy bath towels in the warmer.” Your relaxing bathtime just got a bit more, um, relaxing. The patented suction technology and design of the SipCaddy allows it to attach to glass, mirror, and glazed tile and hold a range of beverages. Wine glasses, plastic bottles, solo cups — you name it, it’ll hold it while you unwind. And the more than 3,700 five-star ratings can attest to its handiness. “You need this in your life,” reads one Amazon review. “Once installed, it doesn’t budge. The trick is it distributes the weight to pull directly away from the suction cup rather than pulling down. Fits wine glasses, 12oz cans or bottles, and also travel coffee mugs. When not holding drinks, it easily doubles as a shower hook for your poof, pumice or whatever you like to keep hanging nearby!”

Best Utility Tokens In 2022 Cryptonews
Best Utility Tokens In 2022 – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/best-utility-tokens-in-2022-cryptonews/ Disclaimer: The Industry Talk section features insights by crypto industry players and is not a part of the editorial content of Cryptonews.com. Utility tokens refer to crypto projects that offer real-world value, insofar as they grant access to a particular product or service.  An example of this is MANA, which enables holders to buy virtual real estate within the Decentraland metaverse.  In this guide, we offer an in-depth analysis of the best utility tokens to buy right now.  The 11 Best Utility Coins to Buy The list below highlights the 11 best utility tokens that we identified during the research process.  Tamadoge – Overall Best Utility Token to Buy Now Battle Infinity – Low-Cap Crypto That Offers Utility in the Metaverse    Lucky Block – NFT Platform That Offers Access to Competitions and Rewards   DeFi Coin – New DEX That Offers Utility via Staking and Yield Farming  MANA – Native Token of the Decentraland Metaverse World  Ethereum – Utility Token That Backs Thousands of ERC-20 Standard Projects XRP – Provides Utility for the Ripple Interbank Payments Network  BNB – Proprietary Token of the Binance Smart Chain Ecosystem   Basic Attention Token – Incentivization to use the Brave Browser  1inch – DEX Aggregator Offering Traders the Most Favorable Price ApeCoin – In-House Currency in the Otherside Metaverse  As per the list above, the best utility coins come from a variety of crypto niches, from the metaverse and P2E gaming to DeFi yield services.  We discuss each and every utility coin project in more detail in the following sections.  Reviewing the Crypto with the Best Utility  Unlike meme coins – which are largely focused on speculation and hyper, utility tokens have an actual use case.  This means that by holding a utility token, investors can gain exclusive access to the respective project’s products and services.  Ultimately, utility tokens have a much greater chance of surviving the current crypto bear market.  Therefore, we will now take a much closer look at the 11 best utility crypto coins to consider buying right now.  1. Tamadoge – Overall Best Utility Token to Buy Now After completing our comprehensive research process, we concluded that overall, Tamadoge is the best utility token to buy today. This newly launched cryptocurrency ecosystem is building a play-to-earn game. This means that players can win real-world rewards that are paid in TAMA – the utility token that is native to Tamadoge.  This is a perfect example of a utility coin, insofar that players are motivated to engage with the Tamadoge ecosystem. Moreover, those holding TAMA tokens will have access to the Tamaverse – which is the project’s take on the metaverse. Additionally, in order to play the Tamadoge game – which is based on caring, breeding, and battling virtual pets, an NFT must be purchased.  And the only currency that can be used for this goal is TAMA. Another reason why we like Tamadoge as the overall best utility coin is that it recently witnessed one of the best crypto presales of the year. Put simply, the project raised over $19 million from investors, and the TAMA token is now listed on multiple exchanges, including OKX and Uniswap.  Those that opted to buy Tamadoge tokens during the presale have since experienced unprecedented growth. In fact, TAMA has already managed to generate post-ICO gains of 10x, which makes it one of the top trending cryptos in the current bear cycle. Furthermore, according to CoinMarketCap, Tamadoge has a market capitalization of just $44 million as of writing.  As one of the best low-cost cryptos, TAMA potentially offers the most upside potential. Those that missed the presale can also consider buying a Tamadoge NFT, with the collection due to launch in the coming days. Just 21,100 NFTs will ever be sold, and the best price possible is available in the impending launch.  Buy Tamadoge on OKX CEX Buy Tamadoge on OKX DEX 2. Battle Infinity – Low-Cap Crypto That Offers Utility in the Metaverse    Battle Infinity is another low-cap crypto project that recently witnessed one of the best crypto ICOs of 2022. Although Battle Infinity raised a modest $5 million, this represents its hard-cap target. Moreover, the presale was planned for three months, but the campaign sold out in just 24 days. This is even more impressive considering the current bear market.  In terms of its utility, IBAT tokens sit at the heart of the Battle Infinity metaverse – otherwise branded as the ‘multiverse’. This will consist of many play-to-earn games, all of which will take a multiplayer format. The first game to launch in the Battle Infinity multiverse is centered on a conventional fantasy sports league.   Successful players will be rewarded with IBAT tokens. Players can then choose to stake their IBAT for passive income directly on the Battle Infinity platform. Or, players can use the Battle Infinity DEX to swap their IBAT for another token type. IBAT can also be used to buy and sell Battle Infinity NFTs, which offer an enhanced in-game experience.  In terms of its price action, Battle Infinity is trading at $0.003 at the time of writing, which equates to a market capitalization of $10 million. The presale priced IBAT at $0.0015, so this represents growth of 100%. However, IBAT previously touched an all-time high of $0.0055, which translates into growth of over 260% from its presale price.  All in all, IBAT could be one of the best penny cryptocurrencies to add to a utility token portfolio today – especially considering its small market capitalization. Those wishing to learn how to buy Battle Infinity tokens can read our beginner’s guide.  Visit Battle Infinity 3. Lucky Block – NFT Platform That Offers Access to Competitions and Rewards   While Tamadoge and Battle Infinity are the best utility tokens from within the play-to-earn gaming space, Lucky Block is focused on NFT competitions. The concept here is that Lucky Block offers a range of competitions on the blockchain, which can be entered by purchasing and holding a relevant NFT.  For example, a popular competition being run right now offers the chance to win a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT. As of writing, this NFT carries a floor price is over $100,000, albeit, during the most recent crypto bull run, investors were paying over $1 million. Nonetheless, there are 10,000 NFTs attached to this Lucky Block competition.  Once all 10,000 have sold out, the prize draw will be made. In the meantime, after buying an NFT, holders will receive passive income rewards via the LBLOCK token. Moreover, the rewards are paid indefinitely, long after the competition draw. Other notable competitions being run by Lucky Block as of writing include FIFA World Cup tickets and $1 million worth of Bitcoin.  The LBLOCK token itself is also worth considering from an investment perspective. LBLOCK had a hugely successful ICO process earlier in the year. After raising over $5 million in presale funding, LBLOCk became the fastest cryptocurrency to hit a market capitalization of $1 billion. Those buying this top-rated utility coin now will, however, pay 95% below its previous all-time high.  For more information on how to buy LBLOCK tokens, consider reading our beginner’s guide.  Visit Lucky Block 4. DeFi Coin – New DEX That Offers Utility via Staking and Yield Farming       Another low-cap gem that offers a variety of utility benefits is DeFi Coin. This cryptocurrency is also fairly new, with the project being founded in late 2021. DeFi Coin is the native utility token of the DeFi Swap exchange, which is currently in the final stages of development. The DeFi Swap exchange will offer a range of ways to generate passive income. This includes a user-friendly staking tool that eventually, will support the vast majority of cryptocurrencies across many different blockchain networks. Multiple staking options will be provided, from 30 days up to a year. Alternatively, investors might also consider using DeFi Swap to access its yield farming tool.  This will provide liquidity to the DeFi Swap exchange so that investors can buy and sell tokens without needing access to market participants or traditional order books. In return, liquidity providers will earn a share of the revenue generated from DeFi Swap trading commissions. Additional features are being built into the DeFi Swap, which will add further utility for DeFi Coin.  Another major benefit of investing in DeFi Coin is that as of writing, the project has a market capitalization of under $1 million. Considering how big the decentralized finance industry is expected to grow in the coming years, this offers a highly attractive entry point. DeFi Coin can be purchased from PancakeSwap in exchange for BNB.    Visit DeFi Coin Now 5. MANA – Native Token of the Decentraland Metaverse World       Another area that the best utility coins play a major role is in the metaverse. One of the best metaverse coins in this regard is MANA, which backs the Decentraland ecosystem. As we briefly noted earlier, MANA is the native digital currency of the Decentraland metaverse and it is required to access the many products and services on offer.  For example, one of the most popular aspects of Decentraland is that users can purchase virtual real estate within its metaverse, in exchange for MANA. The price of each plot will vary depending on market conditions and the location within the metaverse. For instance, buying land close to Paris Hilton or Snoop Dogg will come at a huge premium.  Nonetheless, as per the current bear market, there are some great deals to be had. MANA is also used to access play-to-earn games within Decentraland, in addition to buying and selling NFTs. More utility is expected as the metaverse concept becomes more mainstream. In the meantime, MANA can be purchased at a huge discount when ...

Analysis | If You Think US Pensions Are Safe, Just Wait – The Washington Post https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/analysis-if-you-think-us-pensions-are-safe-just-wait-the-washington-post/ You never know where the next crisis will arise but last week it came from a particularly unlikely place: defined-benefit pensions. The UK government bond market (gilts) went wild as rates spiked and pension funds failed to meet their margin calls. It created so much turmoil that the Bank of England had to step in. Does this mean that US pensions could create similar turmoil? Not to be coy about it, but yes and no. The good news is US pension funds are not so exposed to rate changes because they hold less fixed-income assets. But that is also the bad news. Interest rates are rising and will stay high for the first time in years. This means anyone exposed to fixed income is due for some disruption. US plans hold less debt than UK pensions because they do less risk hedging, so spiking rates probably won’t cause immediate damage. But that also means they are more exposed to market risk, and as rising rates unearth all sorts of financial vulnerabilities, US plans may eventually find themselves in even worse shape than UK plans were last week. The smaller subset of US corporate defined-benefit plans invest about half of their $3.7 trillion in assets in bonds (similar to the UK plans), according to a report from the Milliman Corporate Pension Funding Study.  It’s worth noting American pensions are not so vulnerable to margin calls because they do Liability Driven Investment the old-fashioned way: by mainly just owning bonds instead of adding in leverage. This means as rates rise their assets and liabilities move together, keeping their funding fairly stable. Corporate plans are in relatively good shape, but they are not the big source of risk. A much bigger worry are state and local government pensions, which have more than $9 trillion in assets, and (as of 2021) only 22% of those assets are in fixed income. A low fixed-income allocation was typically considered nothing to brag about for pensions. But public pension plans have been moving out of fixed income and public equity over the last 20 years because rates dropped so low. Unlike UK and US corporate plans, public plans in the US value their liabilities using the expected rate of return on their assets instead of the market interest rate; a convention that makes financial economists’ heads explode. This way of accounting may mean less direct exposure to interest rates, but it also rewards more risk taking because the higher “expected” return pensions choose, the smaller their liabilities appear to be. As interest rates fell pension plans had an incentive to move into opaque, illiquid and risky assets, like private equity and hedge funds because they could claim a higher rate of return. In addition to high fees this meant more risk. US government plans are also underfunded. In 2019, using comparable accounting methods, the public pensions have only enough assets to cover 50% of their liabilities, compared with UK plans, which went into the pandemic able to cover more than 90% of their liabilities. The UK pension dustup is only the first buried body higher rates uncovered. US plans are less directly exposed to a sudden large rate increase, but over time they have an equally troubling vulnerability: They are underfunded and dependent on risky assets paying off. Now, with falling markets, their assets are shrinking and their expected returns are harder to justify. A higher interest-rate environment is also bad for private equity and may mean fewer profitable exits. This could mean that over the next few years pension funds will learn that the 12% to 15% returns they thought they were getting from their alternative investments were an illusion and they have less money than they thought. Pensions may be just the beginning, as the US economy has become dependent on low rates. And that means the new source of vulnerability may come from parts of the economy once thought of as boring and safe, like mortgages and now pensions. Central banks have painted themselves into a corner. The Bank of England attempted to reduce inflation with higher rates and quantitative tightening. But they discovered that fighting inflation and financial stability may be at odds with each other. More From Other Writers at Bloomberg Opinion: • A European Crisis Is Coming. Stock Market News Live Updates: Stocks Fall To Start The Week As Chip Rout Drags Nasdaq To Two-Year Low – Yahoo Finance https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/stock-market-news-live-updates-stocks-fall-to-start-the-week-as-chip-rout-drags-nasdaq-to-two-year-low-yahoo-finance/ U.S. stocks extended a streak of volatile trading on Monday as Wall Street steered into third-quarter earnings season and braced for a batch of inflation reports. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) sank 1.1% to hit a two-year low as a set of fresh restrictions by the Biden administration on China’s access to American technology sent chip stocks tanking and weighed on the broader tech sector. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) slid 0.7% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell around 100 points, or 0.3%. The measures imposed on Monday to curb China’s access to semiconductors aim to slow the country’s technological and military advances but deal a further blow to an industry already struggling with weaker revenues as demand slows for computers, smartphones, and other electronic devices. Shares of major chipmakers including Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD) fell roughly 4% and 2%, respectively. The CBOE Volatility Index (^VIX), which measures short-term expectations for market turbulence, inched closer to the 33 level. And Treasury yields extended their recent climb higher. Oil retreated after surging 17% last week, the largest jump since Russia invaded Ukraine. The moves come after an erratic week that began with a fierce rally and concluded with a sharp sell-off that erased much of the resulting gains. The latest downslide was spurred by a strong September jobs report that confirmed to investors Federal Reserve officials are unlikely to shift away from restrictive monetary policy any time soon. The benchmark S&P 500 index is down 23.6% year to date as of Friday’s close, but nine single trading days comprise that entire decline of 32 total points, according to Nicholas Colas of DataTrek Research. The greater share of down days occurred around Consumer Price Index (CPI) or Federal Reserve-related events, one was prompted by Russia-Ukraine tensions, and two came on the heels of bad corporate earnings releases, he added. In the week ahead, all of those factors are expected to test the U.S. stock market. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 7, 2022. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid Investors are gearing up for the flurry of bank earnings that typically mark the start to a new earnings reporting period, with results from JPMorgan (JPM), Citi (C), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Morgan Stanley (MS) all due out. Other companies set to report this week included PepsiCo (PEP) and Delta Air Lines (DAL). Analysts are bracing for a painful earnings season as persistent inflation, higher interest rates, and geopolitical headwinds weigh on companies’ bottom lines. “The bear market will not be over until the deteriorating fundamental picture is more fully discounted,” Morgan Stanley’s top equity strategist Mike Wilson said in a note. Also on Wall Street’s plate is September consumer price data, one of the most pivotal reports ahead of the FOMC’s next policy-setting meeting in November. While the headline reading is expected to moderate again, all eyes will be on the “core” component of the report, which strips out the volatile food and energy categories. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg project core CPI rose to 6.5% from 6.3% over the year, per the latest estimates. “Volatility is going to persist in equity and fixed income markets until there’s a clear indication that inflation is under control,” Peter Essele, head of portfolio management at Commonwealth Financial Network, said in a recent note. — Alexandra Semenova is a reporter for Yahoo Finance. Yves G. Denton, 42, was a teacher at Thomas Dale High School, according to Chesterfield Police. The alleged assault happened in December 2021 and was reported to police in February 2022, police said. “Denton was a teacher at Thomas Dale High School [at the time] and the victim was a student at the school,” a Chesterfield Police spokesperson wrote. “The victim had previously been one of Denton’s students but was not his student at the time of the assault. The assault did not occur on school property.” Denton was charged with taking indecent liberties with a child by custodian and assault, police said. He was released from jail on an unsecured bond following a court appearance. Denton taught science and history at the high school, according to online records. Do Prices Of Cruises Go Down As The Departure Date Gets Closer? – GOBankingRates https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/do-prices-of-cruises-go-down-as-the-departure-date-gets-closer-gobankingrates/ Debbie Ann Powell / iStock.com If you’ve ever tried to book an airline flight or a hotel a few days before your trip, you may notice that you’re paying a premium for not planning ahead. Likewise, in spite of the popular belief that you can save money by waiting until the last minute to book a cruise, these companies follow the same philosophy as hotels and airlines. Zelle Facebook Marketplace Scam: How To Recognize and Avoid This Scam See Why: This Credit Score Mistake Could Be Costing Millions of Americans Think about it — if they drop fares just to fill empty rooms or seats, everyone would wait until the last minute to book. That’s why, according to the experts at Cruzely.com, you probably won’t save money by waiting until the last minute to book your cruise. In addition, waiting until the last minute can add undue stress to your vacation, and you may not get the room you desire on the ship you prefer. However, the folks at Royal Caribbean Group note that you may be able to find a deal within 90 days of the ship’s departure, but you probably won’t get the best room. Additionally, there may be deals to be found if you are willing to leave on a Monday or book during an off-season for your cruising location. What is the best way to get a cheap cruise? Cruzely.com recommends booking as far in advance as possible, that way you can get your choice of room. You can start scoping out prices as far as a year or more in advance of your trip and purchase while the price is low, but it’s early enough that your choice of cabin is still available. It’s also smart to use a travel rewards credit card with purchase price protection, such as the Capital One Venture card when you book through the Capital One Travel portal. With Capital One Travel’s price drop protection, if the price of your cruise decreases, you’ll receive a refund of the difference as a statement credit. Another factor affecting cruise prices is the timing of your cruise. Booking in January, February, September, October, or November (up to Thanksgiving weekend) can often yield lower fares because schools are in session. Take Our Poll: Do You Have an Emergency Fund Established? Prices often go up during the summer, as well as during spring break and the winter holidays. As with booking any travel, there is no way to guess whether cruise prices will rise or fall at any given time. Monitoring prices closely before you book, using a travel rewards credit card to defray costs, and making sure your credit card has price drop protection are some ways to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Business News At 05:30 Pm On 10th October 2022 The Financial Express
Business News At 05:30 Pm On 10th October 2022 – The Financial Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/business-news-at-0530-pm-on-10th-october-2022-the-financial-express/ We begin the bulletin with troubling news for rupee trade. Large Indian lenders are reluctant to process direct rupee trade transactions with Russia months after the mechanism was put in place for fear of becoming the target of sanctions by the United States and Europe over the invasion of Ukraine, a Reuters report said on Monday. Two smaller lenders have moved to adopt the system after the Reserve Bank of India said in July that it had set up an arrangement for international trade settlements in Indian rupees with immediate effect. But bigger lenders with more exposure to the international financial system, and in particular the dollar, are worried their businesses could be disrupted if targeted by sanctions. Western sanctions to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine are trying to limit Moscow’s access to foreign exchange, particularly the dollar. India has deep trade ties with Russia, and the rupee mechanism can help bypass the US dollar and the euro for settlements. Moving on. Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended lower on Monday amid a weak trend in global markets. The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 200.18 points or 0.34 per cent to settle at 57,991.11. During the day, it tumbled 825.61 points or 1.41 per cent to 57,365.68. The broader NSE Nifty fell 73.65 points or 0.43 per cent to end at 17,241. Among the 30-share Sensex pack, Asian Paints, ITC, Titan, Reliance Industries, HDFC, Nestle and HDFC Bank were the biggest laggards. On the other hand, Axis Bank, TCS, Maruti, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies were among the gainers. Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Shanghai and Hong Kong ended in the negative territory. Stock exchanges in Europe were also trading mostly lower in mid-session deals. The US markets had ended deep in the red on Friday. Meanwhile, the international oil benchmark Brent crude futures declined 0.80 per cent to USD 97.14 per barrel. Now, a major overseas update. This year’s Nobel Prize in economic sciences has been awarded to the former chair of the US Federal Reserve, Ben S Bernanke, and two U.S.-based economists, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H Dybvig, “for research on banks and financial crises.” The prize was announced Monday by the Nobel panel at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. The committee said their work had shown in their research “why avoiding bank collapses is vital.” Nobel prizes carry a cash award of nearly $900,000 and will be handed out on December 10. Unlike the other prizes, the economics award wasn’t established in Alfred Nobel’s will of 1895 but by the Swedish central bank in his memory. The first winner was selected in 1969. Last year, half of the award went to David Card for his research on how the minimum wage, immigration and education affect the labor market. The other half was shared by Joshua Angrist and Guido Imbens for proposing how to study issues that don’t easily fit traditional scientific methods. Now some Q2 action. Digital payments and financial services company Paytm on Monday reported a 63 per cent year-on-year increase in merchant payment volumes for the quarter ended September 2022 to Rs 3.18 lakh crore from Rs 1.96 lakh crore in Q2 FY22. In its Q2 update on operating metrics, the company noted 7.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth from Rs 2.96 lakh crore for Q1 ended June 2022. GMV at Paytm is defined as the value of total payments made to merchants through transactions on its app, through its payment instruments or through its payment solutions and excludes any consumer-to-consumer payment services such as money transfers. In other news, billionaire Gautam Adani-controlled Adani Group is in advanced talks with debt-laden Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd. to buy its cement unit, people familiar with the matter said. The ports-to-power conglomerate could pay about 50 billion rupees ($606 million) for a cement grinding unit and other smaller assets, one of the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. The acquisition will be made by one of the cement units recently acquired by Asia’s richest person, the people said, adding an announcement was expected as early as this week. While discussions are advanced, they could still be delayed or fall apart, the people said. Indian news channel ET NOW reported the deal earlier without disclosing a value. And at last, we are leaving you with a key update from the auto world. Lung Health: Lifestyle Changes To Improve The Health Of Your Lungs – NDTV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/lung-health-lifestyle-changes-to-improve-the-health-of-your-lungs-ndtv/ Lung Health: Surround yourself with greenery to increase oxygen around you An important respiratory organ, the lungs are situated on each side of the heart, close to the backbone. Their primary job is to discharge carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere and transfer oxygen from the atmosphere into the bloodstream. Lungs never take a break. A healthy individual breathes around 25,000 times each day. You can maintain the health of your lungs in a variety of ways. Your lungs can benefit greatly from simple dietary adjustments, healthy lifestyle improvements, and healthy behaviours. Besides, quitting smoking, eating well, etc. there are various other lifestyle changes that improve your lung health. In this article, we discuss simple life changes you can implement to promote the longevity of your lungs and ensure your lungs stay healthy. These lifestyle changes ensure better health of your lungs and overall body: 1. Engage in vigorous exercise The most crucial thing you can do to improve the condition of your lungs is to exercise regularly. Exercise maintains your lungs in condition, just as it does for your body. The heart beats more quickly and the lungs work even harder when you exercise. To feed your muscles, your body requires extra oxygen. In order to provide that oxygen while also releasing more carbon dioxide, your lungs work harder. 2. Be careful of air pollutants There are a number of additional airborne contaminants that are bad for your lungs and general health. Even synthetic scents used in air fresheners and laundry detergents create dangerous chemicals. Your lungs can be harmed by air pollution, which can also fasten ageing. Your lungs are readily able to resist these pollutants when they are healthy and youthful. But as they age, they lose part of their protection and become more susceptible to illnesses. 3. Add real plants to your space As plants have a built-in ability to eliminate some air pollutants naturally, adding plants to our homes improves the oxygen and air quality in our living spaces. This is particularly crucial in the winter when the weather forces us to spend the majority of our time indoors. 4. Avoid catching infections Your lungs might be particularly vulnerable to infections, especially as you become older. Infections are especially dangerous for those who already have respiratory conditions like COPD. However, if elders aren’t vigilant, pneumonia can quickly strike even healthy elderly. Keeping your hands clean is the most effective strategy to prevent lung infections. Wash often with warm water and soap, and try to keep your hands as far away from your face as possible. 5. Drink ample water For your health, consume a lot of water. Furthermore, the health of your lungs is affected by staying hydrated. You may breathe more freely by drinking water since it thins the mucus secretions that naturally build up in your lungs every day. 6. Practice deep breathing If you’re like most individuals, you only use a tiny section of your lungs when you take short breaths from your chest area. Thorough oxygen exchange is created by deep breathing, which also helps to cleanse the lungs. Deep breathing techniques and exercises also help increase our lung capacity. Finally, you are always encouraged to quit smoking and passive smoking to improve and preserve the health of your lungs and overall body. Massachusetts Aims To Launch Sports Betting In Late January – WBUR News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/massachusetts-aims-to-launch-sports-betting-in-late-january-wbur-news/ A customer holds sheets with betting information at the sports book bar at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI on Jan. 29, 2019. (Photo by Barry Chin/The Boston Globe via Getty Images) The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is planning to launch in-person sports betting in the state in late January, just in time for the Super Bowl. The commission set a timeline at a meeting Friday, aiming to start in-person sports betting in late January at casinos and mobile sports betting in early March. The commissioners couldn’t agree on a timeline at a meeting the day prior, and said on Friday that the target dates may be too aggressive and could still be pushed back. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed a bill in August legalizing betting on professional and collegiate sports, joining more than 30 other states, including several neighbors. Baker said that he supports it because state residents are already traveling to Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York and Connecticut to place legal wagers. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 ruled that banning sports betting was unconstitutional. The gaming commission released a survey Friday that it’s requiring companies applying for a sports wagering operator license and vendors to those potential licensees to complete. The survey seeks specific company information before the full applications are due.

Hyperreal CEO Remington Scott Is Giving The Metaverse A Soul – TheWrap https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/hyperreal-ceo-remington-scott-is-giving-the-metaverse-a-soul-thewrap/ The true innovation of Remington Scott’s company, Hyperreal, is not just that he’s created strikingly lifelike digital versions of stars who are living or dead (or completely fictional). It’s that he’s putting those creations into the hands of the talent themselves, empowering them to drive the innovation. Hyperreal, which is known for its “Hypermodel” digital humans, has in two years created a near-perfect double of pop star Madison Beer (for a performance that won a Webby for Tech Achievement); made Paul McCartney resemble a Beatles-era version of himself; designed a virtual model of the late rapper The Notorious B.I.G.; and, with entertainment mogul Simon Fuller and Verizon, invented an AI-driven alien pop princess named Alta B who appeared with the boy band Now United in their “Jump” video. (With 60 million views, “Jump” is the most-watched video featuring a virtual being.) Signaling confidence in Hyperreal’s continued growth, the Korean giant CJ ENM took a minority stake in Hyperreal in April.  The fact that the digital versions of real, flesh-and-blood humans are owned by their real, flesh-and-blood human selves (or their estate) means that they can one day bring those models into other virtual spaces in the metaverse — a critical component to Web3 and the metaverse.  Commenting on his strategy for sustaining his company’s growth, Scott emphasized the very thing that makes the Hypermodels so lifelike: human individuality. “There’s playbooks, and a lot of people write about how to do business or write about how to make things,” Scott told TheWrap. “It’s great to listen to those things. But none of them replace what makes you unique and how you are driving forward your vision. You have to embrace that and move forward with that.” Scott, a veteran of computer graphic design in the video game world who supervised the motion-capture work of Gollum on “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” declined to share details about Hyperreal’s future work with other A-list stars. But he said the company has expanded to working with corporate clients to develop branded characters and mascots. Hyperreal is also looking to open its services to regular folks.  It’s all in the service embracing the digital future. “In 2022, we’ve seen art and technology and business colliding and offering new opportunities for value and new opportunities for expression. And these may be like fits and starts,” Scott said. “Sometimes they work well and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes you might see something that gets a lot of excitement, but then it kind of burns out. But they’re all going to be helping to build a foundation for how we’re moving forward in the technology space.” Innovators List 2022: Read about all 12 of Hollywood and the media world’s most exciting disrupters

James Bond: The Best Action Scenes From The Franchise Ranked MovieWeb
James Bond: The Best Action Scenes From The Franchise Ranked MovieWeb
James Bond: The Best Action Scenes From The Franchise, Ranked – MovieWeb https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/james-bond-the-best-action-scenes-from-the-franchise-ranked-movieweb/ The James Bond films are known for many things: exotic locales, beautiful women, awesome gadgets, and memorable villains. For a long time, if you wanted a peak spectacle, you went to a James Bond movie. From car chases, ski chases, boat chases, or any kind of chase, the films have provided ample amounts of jaw-dropping action scenes. But which action scenes from the franchise are the best? Which ones have either the best fighting choreography or are shot so wonderfully that we’ll never forget them? Well, here are some of the best ones. 6/6 Bond vs Patrice – Skyfall (2012) Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing This one makes the list solely for Roger Deakins’ mindblowingly fantastic cinematography. Seriously, how the hell did he lose the Oscar for this? The sequence is set in Shanghai, where Bond has tracked the assassin Patrice. After seeing him assassinate a man viewing a painting from a building away, Bond’s cover is blown when Patrice spots his reflection in glass and the fight is on. There’s a few quick cuts, but most of the fight is one continuous shot, with both fighters appearing completely in black, almost impossible to tell who is who. Add some bright blue lights in the background, and you get a fight scene where every frame is a painting. The fight itself isn’t too long, but who cares when it looks this incredible? 5/6 Bond and Paloma Team Up – No Time To Die (2021) Sony No Time To Die has some very big problems, but luckily, its action sequences aren’t one of them. The pre-credits sequence with the Aston Martin is great, and the fight in the Norway forest is wonderfully tense, but there’s a very good reason the one scene in the movie everyone can agree is amazing is Bond and Paloma teaming up to kick some butt in Santiago, Cuba. Bond is trying to capture a scientist named Valdo Obruchev at a Spectre party. However, chaos breaks out, and the nanobots released in the party kill all of Spectre instead of 007. Bond gets a few bad guys here and there, but all the best moments go to Paloma. Whether she’s wielding pistols, machine guns, or kicking people, she looks incredible doing it, and not just because she’s in one of the most beautiful gowns any Bond girl has ever worn. The cherry on top is Bond and Paloma making drinks in the middle of the fight, then going right back to the action. Can’t get more Bond-like than that. 4/6 Midair Fight – Moonraker (1979) Distributed by United Artists It took eighty-eight jumps and almost five weeks to film this sequence. The result? One of the best action scenes in the franchise. This fight happens in the pre-credits, with Bond flying back to England when both pilot and stewardess jump out of the plane, leaving Bond without a parachute. Bond jumps out, catches up with the pilot, steals his parachute, but who comes parachuting after him? Why, Jaws, of course! Bond bests the hulking henchman, who crash lands on top of a circus tent. Admittedly, the ending is a little goofy with Jaws flapping his arms, but everything else about the sequence is phenomenal. It still holds up to this day, too. It truly is one of the most impressive midair fights ever filmed. 3/6 Kobe Docks Chase – You Only Live Twice (1967) Distributed by United Artists Sean Connery’s fifth film takes place entirely in Japan. He and his ally, Aki, travel to Kobe to shadow a tanker named the Ning-Po, which has somehow dropped off cargo between Japan and China despite never docking anywhere along the way. Scores of henchman discover our heroes and the chase is on. There is so much coming together so wonderfully in this sequence, especially John Barry’s score, which times perfectly with gunfire or Bond evading a bad guy. The highlight of the sequence is without a doubt Bond running on the rooftop of a building as henchmen pop out every door trying to chase him down. The camera panning back to show just how big the roof is and how many baddies Bond’s up against, all punctuated by the music of Nancy Sinatra’s wonderful title song, really helps elevate the whole chase. Admittedly, it ends with a henchman knocking Bond out from behind, but that’s really par for the course for him, if we’re being completely honest. 2/6 Train Fight – From Russia With Love (1963) Distributed by United Artists Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy, Goldeneye, Skyfall, Spectre. What do they all have in common? They all had fights on a train. However, not one of those train fights can outdo the very first time Bond duked it out with someone on a train in From Russia With Love. In this case, Bond’s opponent is Red Grant, one of the best henchmen the franchise has ever seen. The train in question is the Orient Express, which as any Agatha Christie fan can tell you, has seen some murder in its day. The fight begins when Grant tries to open Bond’s briefcase, unaware that it releases tear gas when opened like a normal one. That gives Bond the opening he needs to get Grant’s gun away from him. What follows is a very up-close, in-your-face fight. Having it set in a train compartment really limits the space to move around, allowing for a very vicious duel that ends with Bond stabbing Grant in the arm and strangling him with his own garrotte watch. Brutal? Yes. One of the best fight scenes in the franchise? Also yes. 1/6 Parkour Chase – Casino Royale (2006) Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing How do you make a parkour chase look good? Well… it helps when the guy being chased is played by Sebastien Foucan, one of the founding fathers of parkour. The sequence is set in Madagascar, with Bond pursuing a bomb maker through a constriction site, then an embassy. Every second of this chase scene is incredible and honestly, it’s one of the best action scenes ever filmed. Not only that, but we get some character development for Bond in it, too. Our bomb maker moves with the grace of a ballerina as he dodges everything to escape from Bond. Bond literally punches through drywall to get to him, heavily emphasizing the “Bond is blunt instrument” theme the movie is going for. It’s a flawless sequence and truly the best action scene in the entire franchise.

Prosecutors Raid Three Bithumb ‘Affiliates’ As Shareholder Scrutiny Intensifies – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/prosecutors-raid-three-bithumb-affiliates-as-shareholder-scrutiny-intensifies-cryptonews/ Source: Dennizn/Adobe A number of South Korean firms related to the crypto exchange Bithumb – including the firm that owns a controlling share of its stock – have been raided by the prosecution service on embezzlement charges. Per MBC, officers searched the offices of Vidente, a publicly listed video equipment-making company that owns a majority 34% tranche of Bithumb’s shares. They also raided INBIOGEN, a footwear and accessories producer, and Bucket STUDIO, a firm that produces entertainment-related contents. The media outlet added that executives from the firms are being investigated on suspicion of embezzling company funds. While none of these companies appears to have a link with the crypto sector, they are believed to be owned by Kang Jong-hoon, a man widely believed to be the owner and “secret” chairman” of Bithumb. Kang has reportedly been attempting to sell Bithumb for over a year after acquiring the exchange – and the other three companies – back in 2020. Some firms have also enquired about the possibility of buying Vidente, a move that would grant them control over Bithumb. Bithumb trading volumes. (Source: CoinGecko) A leading South Korean media outlet earlier this month published a comprehensive exposé of Kang earlier this month, alleging that he had appointed the older sister of his celebrity girlfriend, the actress Park Min-young, as an INBIOGEN director. Park’ sister has recently stepped down from her role at INBIOGEN, but prosecutors appear to believe that financial wrongdoings may be afoot at the companies. Officers removed “accounting-related” documents and digital data from the three firms. Prosecutors stated that the crypto exchange Bithumb was currently not part of their investigations.   Who Is Bithumb’s Biggest Shareholder? Kang is a somewhat mysterious figure in the South Korean crypto industry – and does not have a background in IT. His business card reportedly refers to him as the Chairman of Vidente, INBIOGEN, Bucket STUDIO, and the Bithumb affiliate Bithumb Live. The exposé’s authors provided testimony from unnamed sources who claimed Kang has links to the underworld – as well as a fleet of luxury cars, all of which are registered in the names of friends or family members. Park’s representatives have confirmed that she was romantically involved with Kang, but have claimed she has since broken off the relationship.

Russian-Speaking Hackers Knock Multiple US Airport Websites Offline. No Impact On Operations Reported – CNN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/russian-speaking-hackers-knock-multiple-us-airport-websites-offline-no-impact-on-operations-reported-cnn/ CNN  —  More than a dozen public-facing airport websites, including those for some of the nation’s largest airports, appeared inaccessible Monday morning, and Russian-speaking hackers claimed responsibility. No immediate signs of impact to actual air travel were reported, suggesting the issue may be an inconvenience for people seeking travel information. The 14 websites include the one for Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. An employee there told CNN there were no operational impacts. The Los Angeles International Airport website was offline earlier but appeared to be restored shortly before 9 a.m. Eastern. A spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment. The hacking group known as Killnet listed multiple US airports as targets. It stepped up activity to target organizations in NATO countries after Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine. The loosely organized “hacktivists” are politically motivated to support the Kremlin but ties to Moscow are unknown. The group claimed responsibility last week for knocking offline US state governments websites. Killnet is blamed for briefly downing a US Congress website in July and for cyberattacks on organizations in Lithuania after the country blocked shipment of goods to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad in June. The type of cyberattack used by Killnet is known as “distributed denial of service” (DDoS), in which hackers flood computer servers with phony web traffic to knock them offline. “DDoS attacks are favored by actors of varying sophistication because they have visible results, but these incidents are usually superficial and short lived,” John Hultquist, a vice president at Google-owned cybersecurity firm Mandiant, told CNN. A Transportation Security Administration spokesperson said officials are looking into the matter.

Depending on the type of ethanol feedstock used, Honeywell (HON) said jet fuel produced from its ethanol-to-jet fuel process can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% on a total lifecycle basis compared to petroleum-based jet fuel. The company said SAF plants using its technology can be modularized offsite enabling lower installed costs and faster, less labor-intensive installation compared to job site construction. “Honeywell’s ethanol- to-jet process, when used as a standalone or when coupled with Honeywell carbon capture technology, is ready now to provide a pathway to lower carbon-intensity SAF,” said Barry Glickman, VP of Honeywell (HON) Sustainable Technology Solutions. Honeywell (HON) “offers investors meaningful income growth potential and decent capital appreciation upside potential,” Valuentum writes in an analysis published on Seeking Alpha.

Vanderburgh County’s Biggest-Selling House For July Topped $2 Million – Courier & Press https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/vanderburgh-countys-biggest-selling-house-for-july-topped-2-million-courier-press/ EVANSVILLE – Think of Secretariat blowing away the field in the 1973 Belmont Stakes, winning the race and the Triple Crown by a whopping 31 lengths. The most expensive house sold in Vanderburgh County in July showed similar dominance over any competitor. A Newburgh Road mansion on Evansville’s East Side pulled more than $2.1 million, according to data provided by the assessor’s office. No other Vanderburgh County home topped a $1 million sale price during July. It was a brisk month overall, with nine Vanderburgh County houses selling for at least $500,000, and 252 sales surpassing $100,000. But the Newburgh Road property stands out. Here are July’s top five sales with data, as always, courtesy of the Vanderburgh County Assessor’s Office. 6213 Newburgh Road, $2.1 million At nearly 10,000 square feet, this big house designed and renovated by Denton Homes “combines wonderful livability with high-end finishes, exceptional flair and a great combination of the past and present,” according to its Zillow.com description. The home with five bedrooms and eight bathrooms sits on 3.5 acres. It has a large covered front porch and spacious foyer, an open dining room featuring a fireplace, built-in cabinets and shelves, surround sound and a sitting area. Zillow describes the kitchen as a “show-stopper” with a massive center island. Other highlights: a sun-filled family room, a home office on the main floor, a theatre room and a large mud room with built-in lockers. Outside, there’s an in-ground pool, hot tub, covered patio, outdoor kitchen and double-sided fireplace. 10700 Old Plantation Drive, $850,000 The sale price of this home seems to be the norm for Plantation Estates, a subdivision near McCutchanville. Homes here typically have about 6,500 square feet and are priced about $877,000. The homeowners association’s monthly fee is about $83. The estate at 10700 Old Plantation Drive sits on two acres and covers 5,600 square feet. With four bedrooms and five bathrooms, it also has three fireplaces and inground pool and large kitchen with breakfast area overlooking the porch and rear patio. Got lots of clothes and shoes? The second-floor master suite has three walk-in closets. There’s also a large bonus room upstairs with its own walk-in closet and bathroom. 10607 Oglesby Road, $799,900 Checking in third for July at a tick less than $800,000 is this Darmstadt area home. It has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and 4,660 square feet. It’s described on Zillow as an ideal place for parties with a picturesque ride from road to door. “The first driveway leads to the entrance of the home and the second takes you around back to the amazing carriage house and outdoor paradise,” according to Zillow. “If you enjoy pool time and outdoor kitchens this home is right up your alley. A tree lined back yard provides plenty of privacy and lots of patio areas would make this the perfect entertaining spot.” 1919 Briar Ridge Road, $665,000 Another property with a charming entry drive, this mansion is in northeast Vanderburgh County near Oak Meadow Country Club on three acres. There’s four bedrooms, three bathrooms and 3,900 square feet. “As you approach the long driveway up to the home you are greeted with Hardie board siding and beautiful original stone accents,” according to Zillow. ” … Pure privacy and an incredibly serene setting make this property a one-of-a-kind.” With a 2.5-car attached garage and a 2.5-car detached garage, this home would appear ideal for somebody who either loves cars or needs a workshop. Zillow also makes note of a beautiful kitchen and living area with “soaring ceilings,” as well as ample family and deck space. 1509 Cheshire Bridge Road, $630,000 In June, a house on this same block in Farmington Place subdivision was among the top-five most expensive sales. This picturesque four-bedroom, three-bathroom home nearby closes out July’s list. The home northwest of Evansville’s city limits covers nearly 3,800 square feet. It’s described by Zillow as offering a little bit of everything: a three-car garage, plus a breakfast nook that “opens to a lovely covered patio with skylights, perfect for summer barbecues and entertaining friends.” According to the F.C. Tucker Emge website, the median list price for a house in Farmington Place is $675,000, with an average 33 days on market.

Staying Healthy In A Schizoid World UCA News
Staying Healthy In A Schizoid World – UCA News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/staying-healthy-in-a-schizoid-world-uca-news/ The ancient Romans put it well: “A healthy mind in a healthy body” (mens sana in corpore sano). This adage accurately sums up the traditional system of education. In this context, academic studies were blended with sports and athletics, as well as with public expression in the arts, like elocution, music, painting and theater. Thus, the human person grew intellectually, physically and emotionally. But modern education, increasingly competitive and focused largely on financial gain, tends to forget this. One reason why the decline of mental health, not just in adults but in adolescents as well, has become one of society’s gravest concerns today. Oct. 10 is World Mental Health Day, a day chosen to increase awareness and education about health issues. What is mental health? What we call “mental health” is perhaps better described as “emotional well-being,” that is, it’s not so much a deterioration of the brain as an atrophy of the heart, of feelings, of relationships. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes mental health as the state of someone who “functions at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment.” Or to put it more descriptively, mental health is “subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence and self-actualization of one’s intellectual and emotional potential, among others.” Mental health issues arise because of a variety of reasons: stress, depression, loneliness, anxiety, deaths in the family, mood disorders and various other mental illnesses. Feelings of deprivation, of financial loss, major health issues, moving to a new place, retirement and several such stressful events can leave a person vulnerable to depression. Many of these are lifestyle ailments, that is, they are caused by the irreversible change of social behavior patterns of modern living. Modern life, whatever benefits it has brought some of us, is also fast-paced, hectic and stressful. It values success, especially financial success, as its main goal. It is also more individualistic and disdains relationships with family and kin, in spite of knowing that it is our relatives who provide the emotional buffer in life’s various tragedies. No wonder the growing incidence of mental illness, or emotional breakdown, expresses itself in depression and violent paranoia. Therapy, counseling, or medication can help overcome these illnesses, but because of the social stigma associated with mental breakdown — “becoming mad” — many patients decline to visit a doctor. With no professional help, such patients often move towards taking extreme steps, like suicide.          Mental health in India According to a WHO report, India is the most depressed country in the world. The report says that between 1990 and 2017, one in seven people in India suffered mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and other severe conditions. India also has a very low number of health professionals to deal with mental health issues. These challenges require the government’s as well as citizens’ immediate attention. As per WHO estimates, nearly 50 million Indians suffer from depression. “That is, an increase of more than 18 percent in cases of depression as compared with the last decade, and account for over two-thirds of global suicides in low- and middle-income countries like ours,” says Mahesh Jayaraman, co-founder of the health platform Sepalika.com. While there are numerous ways to deal with depression, most often people resort to chemical antidepressants and, in some severe cases, electroconvulsive therapy. Alternative strategies Are there safer, alternative strategies to cope with a mental disability? This World Mental Health Day, here are four scientific ways to deal with depression. Eat a balanced diet, rich in high-quality fats: A balanced and nutritious diet helps promote good health and works effectively on the body to fight depression. While good fats are known to enhance mental calm, trans fats and saturated fats are bad and can adversely affect brain health. Conduct thyroid function tests: Abnormal thyroid hormone levels can result in mood swings, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, insomnia and depression. If you are detected with hypothyroidism and depression, then dietary supplements that support thyroid function can come to your rescue. As thyroid function improves, depression goes away naturally. Consume adequate B vitamins: Often, low levels of vitamin B12 and other B vitamins can trigger depression. These vitamins play an important role in producing brain chemicals that affect mood and other brain functions. Practice yoga and meditation: Yoga and meditation are among the most effective ways to fight depression and its symptoms. Yoga and meditation have demonstrated therapeutic effectiveness on many patients dealing with depression, mental and emotional problems. The famous psychologist Carl G. Jung in his classic study Modern Man in Search of a Soul observed that the loss of religion in modern life was responsible for many of its ailments. He declared that finding a “spiritual vision for oneself” was the first step to recovery. Religion, as we know, is a two-edged sword. Many societies across the globe promote a fundamentalist kind of religion, replete with codes and rituals, and suspicious of everything modern. What Jung implied was rather “spirituality,” an orientation of the human spirit to all that is true, good and beautiful, particularly a reverence for life in all its forms in nature. Such spiritual persons then have discovered that the key to healthy living lies in relationships — with others, with oneself, and with that Divine Power beyond us — and that our total well-being consists in bringing these relationships to fruition. *The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official editorial position of UCA News.

But Horford might not want to anyway given Noh sees the Florida product as the ninth-best swingman in the Association, checking ahead of names on the come-up like Scottie Barnes of the Toronto Raptors and Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers. “Horford looked like he might be close to done a few years ago, but he revitalized his career at age 35 with the Celtics,” writes the S/N analyst. “He’s an extremely high-feel defender, and he guards stars like Antetokounmpo as well as anyone else in the league.” Rep. Inside Zuckerberg’s Metaverse Struggles | Technology News – The Indian Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/inside-zuckerbergs-metaverse-struggles-technology-news-the-indian-express/ Last October, when Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, announced that the company would change its name to Meta and become a “metaverse company,” he sketched a vision of a utopian future many years off in which billions of people would inhabit immersive digital environments for hours on end, working, socializing and playing games inside virtual and augmented worlds. In the year since, Meta has spent billions of dollars and assigned thousands of employees to make Zuckerberg’s dream feasible. But Meta’s metaverse efforts have had a rocky start. The company’s flagship virtual-reality game, Horizon Worlds, remains buggy and unpopular, leading Meta to put in place a “quality lockdown” for the rest of the year while it retools the app. Some Meta employees have complained about frequent strategy shifts that seem tied to Zuckerberg’s whims rather than a cohesive plan. And Meta executives have butted heads over the company’s metaverse strategy, with one senior leader complaining that the amount of money the company had spent on unproven projects made him “sick to my stomach.” The company’s struggle to reshape the business was described in interviews with more than a dozen current and former Meta employees and internal communications obtained by The New York Times. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about internal matters. On Tuesday, Meta is expected to unveil a new VR headset at a developer conference, along with other new metaverse features. The stakes are high for the company, which is racing to transform itself to make up for declines in other parts of its business. TikTok is siphoning younger users away from Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s two big moneymakers, and Apple made privacy changes to its mobile operating system that have cost Meta billions of dollars in advertising revenue. The company’s stock price has tumbled nearly 60% in the past year — a reflection not just of broader market turbulence, but of some investors’ skepticism that the metaverse will be highly lucrative anytime soon. In late September, the company announced that it would freeze most hiring, and Zuckerberg has warned employees that layoffs may be coming. “The pressures Meta’s business is facing in 2022 are acute, significant and not metaverse-related,” said Matthew Ball, an investor and metaverse expert whose advice Zuckerberg has sought. “And there is a risk that almost everything Mark has outlined about the metaverse is right, except the timing is farther out than he imagined.” In a statement, Andy Stone, a Meta spokesperson, said the company believed it was still on the right path. “Being a cynic about new and innovative technology is easy,” Stone said. “Actually building it is a lot harder — but that’s what we’re doing because we believe the metaverse is the future of computing.” Zuckerberg successfully overhauled his company a decade ago, getting it to focus on how its products worked on smartphones instead of desktops. He signaled a similar shift last year, saying that investing in the metaverse would allow Meta to make the leap from one technological era to the next. There are some signs that Meta’s bet has put it ahead of competitors. The company’s consumer VR headset, the Quest 2, is the most popular VR headset on the market with more than 15 million sold, according to outside estimates. Its Oculus VR app — which has since been rebranded Meta Quest — has been installed more than 21 million times on iOS and Android devices, according to an estimate by Sensor Tower, an app analytics firm. But Meta’s future success depends on the company’s ability to bring virtual and augmented reality tools to far more people. Meta said in February that its Horizon Worlds game had grown to roughly 300,000 monthly active users — an increase from a few months earlier, but minuscule in comparison with Facebook’s more than 2.9 billion monthly active users. The company declined to provide more up-to-date figures for Horizon Worlds. Adding to Meta’s woes is that U.S. regulators appear determined to prevent the company from acquiring its way to success, as it did by buying Instagram and WhatsApp. In July, the Federal Trade Commission sued Meta to block it from acquiring Within, the maker of a popular VR fitness app. Meta is fighting the agency’s lawsuit, which it has called “wrong on the facts and the law.” Zuckerberg, determined to recast his public image after years in the limelight for unpopular decisions about political speech on Facebook, has surprised some employees by making himself the innovator face of the metaverse push. Demonstrations and mock-ups of Meta’s latest metaverse technologies feature footage of Zuckerberg performing VR versions of his hobbies, including fencing and a surfing-like watersport called hydrofoiling. The CEO recently went on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he told the popular comedian that building an immersive metaverse was his “holy grail.” His involvement has backfired at times. In August, Zuckerberg posted a screenshot of his Horizon Worlds avatar on his Facebook page, along with an announcement that the app was expanding into France and Spain. But the avatar’s flat, cartoonish look was roundly mocked. (One commenter compared it to “a 2002 Nintendo GameCube release.”) After that response, Zuckerberg and other executives directed employees to give priority to improving the appearance of avatars, according to two employees. Stone, the Facebook spokesperson, characterized Zuckerberg’s reaction to the avatar backlash as “frustrated,” but did not provide additional details. A new version of Zuckerberg’s digital appearance was fast-tracked, the two employees said, along with updates to other Horizon Worlds avatars that had been in the works. Four days after Zuckerberg’s original post, he shared that upgraded digital version of himself, conceding that his first avatar was “pretty basic” while the “graphics in Horizon are capable of much more.” One Meta graphic artist claimed in a LinkedIn post, which has since been deleted, that he and his team had designed roughly 40 versions of Zuckerberg’s face over a four-week period before a final version was approved. Zuckerberg’s zeal for the metaverse has been met with skepticism by some Meta employees. This year, he urged teams to hold meetings inside Meta’s Horizon Workrooms app, which allows users to gather in virtual conference rooms. But many employees didn’t own VR headsets or hadn’t set them up yet, and had to scramble to buy and register devices before managers caught on, according to one person with knowledge of the events. In a May poll of 1,000 Meta employees conducted by Blind, an anonymous professional social network, only 58% said they understood the company’s metaverse strategy. Employees have also grumbled about the high turnover and frequent shuffling of employees as Zuckerberg’s priorities change. Inside Meta, two employees said, some workers now jokingly refer to key metaverse projects as MMH, for “make Mark happy.” In September, Vishal Shah, the vice president in charge of Meta’s metaverse division, wrote on an internal message board that he was disappointed in how few Meta employees were using Horizon Worlds, according to a post obtained by The Times. In his post, which was first reported by The Verge, Shah said that managers would begin tracking workers’ use of Horizon Worlds, and said that testing their own technology was essential. “Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time?” Shah asked. “The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?” Shah, who declined to comment to The Times, also said in his post that Horizon would undergo a “quality lockdown” for the rest of the year to “raise the overall craft and delight of our product.” As Meta has struggled to grow its metaverse, some at the company have suggested unconventional ideas for bringing in new users. This summer, three Meta employees proposed marketing VR headsets to Americans who received student debt relief from the Biden administration, believing it could boost sales of headsets by 20%, according to an internal post viewed by The Times. “This is an opportunity for Meta Quest growth, as there is evidence that past Federal Stimulus spurred growth,” the analysis read. It does not appear that the company acted on the advice. One prominent insider who has objected to Zuckerberg’s approach to the metaverse is John Carmack, a well-known game developer and former chief technology officer of Oculus, the VR company Facebook acquired for roughly $2 billion in 2014. He continues to work part time at Meta as an adviser. In a podcast interview in August, Carmack said the scale of Meta’s metaverse bet — last year, it reported a $10 billion loss in the division housing its AR and VR units — made him “sick to my stomach thinking about that much money being spent.” He added that Meta’s development of the metaverse has been hampered by big-company bureaucracy and concerns about issues such as diversity and privacy. Carmack has also spoken out on Workplace, Meta’s internal message board. In posts obtained by The Times, Carmack, who is speaking at the developer conference Tuesday, criticized features of the company’s VR headsets, calling the need to run software updates before using them “extremely bad for user enjoyment.” Carmack did not respond to a request for comment. Carmack’s criticism has put him at odds with executives such as Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, who oversaw VR efforts for years and is a close ally of Zuckerberg’s. Carmack, according to four employees who have worked with him, has urged the company to think about the metaverse primarily ...

Can Vape Carts Go Bad?And If So, Why Do They Expire? – The Island Now https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/can-vape-carts-go-badand-if-so-why-do-they-expire-the-island-now/ As they say, nothing good lasts forever, and marijuana is no exception. Every flower enthusiast knows time begins to run out when they take that good weed bud back to the house from the drug store.  Even keeping it dark and airtight can only slow the passage of time. Your bud is rapidly losing its flavor and strength with each day. The issue of duration and strength, though, is not just relevant to marijuana users.  Many users of vape or oil cartridges have pulled a dubious-looking cartridge from the back of a drawer and questioned whether to attach it to the battery and give it a go. Do vaporizer cartridges ever expire as a result? What could go wrong if you still smoke it when they do?If you’ve ever wondered if you should smoke out of an old cartridge or force it into retirement, we’re here to help you decide. Understanding Vape Carts Let’s first discuss what is inside the vape cartridge before discussing whether or not vape cartridges go bad.  About one gram of cannabis concentrate, an oil-based strain of the cannabis plant, is present inside the glass or plastic cylinder. Along with other terpenes and cannabinoids isolated from the herb, this oil has a high concentration of THC. A steel plate at the bottom of the cylinder vaporizes the oil breathed via the lips. A charger on one side of the vape pen heats the surface. You don’t have to be concerned about some problems that one runs into with marijuana over a period since the oil includes THC concentrate instead of plant debris. Terpenoids won’t dissipate, trichomes won’t flake off the foliage, and they won’t lose strength as it dries up. This does not imply that vape refills are indestructible, though. Over age, vape cartridges might degrade. How Does THC In Vape Cartridges Change Over Time? Complicated networks of phospholipid bilayers and molecules with weaker connections make up oil. While CBD vape oil may stay potent for longer than a gram of marijuana, it will eventually decay like any other oil or concentrate. Those chemical connections will dissolve, particularly given how frequently the battery’s plate heats the oil. Identical to how THC molecules constantly degrade into CBN, regardless of their shape. How fast this THC decomposes in your vape cartridge depends on a few things, but heat is the most important. The degradation of both the oil and the THC will occur more quickly due to long exposure to greater temperatures. Moreover, it may seem contradictory for something whose function is to be heated.  This heat may originate from a hot day, a steamy automobile interior, or even body heat trapped inside a pocket. Direct Light exposure, particularly direct sunlight, is another important element that causes a vape cartridge to degrade.  The light will break those flimsy hydrogen atoms, whether marijuana is a bud, a consumable, or an extract, converting the psychotropic THC to the less-psychoactive (but still useful) CBN. How To Tell If A Vape Cartridge Has Gone Bad? On average, smoking an old THC cartridge, like smoking an old joint, may not pose any severe health risks to you.Although, we still won’t advise you to go with it due to several reasons. You might cough more, feel drowsy or headachey, and your vape cartridge won’t be as powerful, effective, or flavorful if it has gone wrong. Bearing all of this in mind, there are a few indicators to look for to ensure a vape cartridge is fresh before you try smoking it if it is of unknown age. The thickness and purity of the cartridge should be compared to when you originally purchased it. The oil should remain a consistent hue of amber to light yellow. It shouldn’t be too difficult for you to see into it as well. Your vape pen has gone wrong and must be thrown away if the liquid is discolored or has become brown.  The press won’t be worthwhile if the oil within has been sluggish or hardened in any other manner. Get rid of any hazy liquid or crystals developing from the sides.Even though the oil doesn’t appear to have altered, the instant you remove it, you’ll know if it has passed its expiration date. Because the oil is degrading, the vapor will taste harsh or sour, or you’ll sneeze a lot more.  The potency will also have significantly decreased. In conclusion, if the oil cartridge has become black, back off. Keeping A Vape Cart Fresh If you recently purchased a new cartridge, specifically if you spent a lot of money on a high-quality one, you should preserve it in good condition until the very last drop. There are a few easy techniques to lengthen the shelf life of your vape cartridge. The amount of care you take to store your vape cartridge will determine how long it retains its potency, just as with flowers.  The great news is that since it’s a concentration, your cartridge will keep its quality close to the same for much longer than the flower.  Your vape cartridge could last up to one year without significantly changing strength if you take the appropriate precautions and use high-quality materials. When not in use, remove the vape cartridge’s screws from the batteries to prevent it from becoming faulty. There will be some power loss and very slight warming as soon as the metal plate is in touch with the battery, which over time, will harm the oil and cannabinoids.  Along with maintaining your cartridge upright while it’s unbolted, this aids in preventing leakage and damage. If you frequently take your cartridges in your pocket, putting them in a tiny waterproof case is advisable because the human body also operates at temperatures over 70 degrees. Maintain your cartridges away from bright light, particularly the sun. When THC molecules are broken down by excessive light, the oil cartridge might become black or brown and lose strength and flavor. Additional heat from the sun will, as already said, hasten the deterioration of your vape cartridge. Although a container is ideal for keeping your cartridges, any cold, dry cabinet or proper storage space will suffice.  A ledge would be the most undesirable place to put them. Your oil cartridge will quickly go bad as a result of this. Getting The Freshest Vape Experience Another option is to get a cannabis oil needle for refilling cartridges if you frequently carry your carts in your vehicle or wallet and would like to preserve them.  These can be purchased at several dispensaries and let you keep the actual oil until you require it in a cold, dry location. You may always have a new supply of hash oil syringe that is strong by just filling your cartridge with the quantity you need for the upcoming few days. In conclusion, vape kits do degrade over time. Nevertheless, if you store your cartridges cold and in the darkness, they should retain their efficacy for anywhere between six and a year. They’ll start to lose a few of their effectiveness after that. The oil should remain in good condition to vape without sacrificing flavors if maintained properly. So place them in cool and dark places. Types of Vape Cartridges The industry is filled with several varieties of vape carts. Each one has a special type of cannabis extract. You, therefore, get different flavors and active ingredients. Here are some of the best vape cart types: Prefilled Sometimes described as a “consumable dab pen” or a “cannabis oil vape.” As the name implies, you buy a cartridge that has your preferred flavor present in it.  You discard the old tank and acquire a new one when the oil runs out. This cart is intended for cannabis oils with strong THC or CBD content. Refillable Once the cannabis extracts are finished, you replenish the cart. You may fill the 510-thread unfilled cart tank that goes with it with your chosen product. You may personalize your cannabis experience with the help of this affordable cart. Disposable These adaptable delta-8 disposable vape pens are broader, primed, and prepacked for vaping. Similar to the emotions dash pen, it generally has a single cycle and is not suggested for refilling. When the isolate is finished, throw it away for disposal. What Are The Benefits Of Vape Carts? Convenience Search no further than a vape cartridge pen if you’re looking for simplicity. All gadgets are transportable, but the vape pen is the most so. Usually, it can be put straight in your pocket. Furthermore, the gadget is small enough that no one will notice you carrying it. To use a vape cartridge pen, connect it to your charger, and you can begin creating those voluminous clouds. Some gadgets have a cool push-button setup. Some pens don’t need knobs and start responding when you begin breathing in. Consistent Quality You could experience varying levels of quality with each tongue hit while using certain vape mods. If you use a pre-filled vape pen, you should never be concerned about it. Nearly all cartridges are either prefilled with a certain quantity of nicotine or not. You can discover a taste and intensity that meets all of your requirements based on your preferences.  E-liquids for modern vapes come in a wide variety of tastes. Each time you load a fresh cartridge, you may continue to enjoy the same taste after finding a flavor you like. Availability The last ten years have seen a rise in the popularity of vaping goods. You can discover a huge selection of vape cartridges both online and offline. Most reliable sellers will provide thorough product descriptions, including information on flavors, chemicals, and nicotine concentration. When buying cannabis vape cartridges on the internet, please seek actual consumer reviews. What Are Some Of The Downsides Of Vape Carts? While malfunctioning vape cartridges are rare, they do occasionally occur. Sometimes when the device’s electrical properties problems cause the cartridge to malfunction.  After repe...

The growth indicates that the real-world utility of the network is rising. Per data from the crypto analytics firm Santiment, a surge in new addresses created on Ethereum was seen on Saturday, when as many as 135,780 brand new wallet addresses popped up on the network. The firm noted in a tweet published this weekend that the increase was 11.1% larger than what was seen on January 3, which marked the second biggest day for network growth this year. As explained by Santiment, the network growth means that the utility of the network is rising, which it said “commonly foreshadow potential asset breakouts.” The unusually strong network growth was also pointed out by others on Twitter, with one Twitter user predicting that “big moves” are coming: The large growth seen over the weekend also meant that the cumulative number of wallet addresses on Ethereum reached a new all-time high. As of Sunday, a total of 207.4m unique addresses existed on the network, data from Etherscan showed. Source: Etherscan Growth in Ethereum’s utility – and ultimately the ETH price – is something the Ethereum community has wished for following the highly anticipated transition to proof-of-stake (PoS) on September 15, known as the Merge. Among other things, the Merge is expected to bring huge improvements in terms of energy efficiency, with the Ethereum Foundation famously pointing to a potential reduction in the network’s energy use of 99.95%. As previously reported by Cryptonews.com, it is widely believed that this could also lead to large capital inflows from ESG-conscious investors. So far, however, the price has not reacted in the way the community had wished for, with ETH still trading almost 17% lower than it did at the time of the Merge. As of 11:10 UTC on Monday, ETH traded at $1,311. The price is down 0.9% for the past 24 hours, but up 1.1% for the past 7 days.

Strive Launches U.S. Semiconductor ETF (SHOC) Ahead Of Potential China-Taiwan Annexation – Businesswire.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/strive-launches-u-s-semiconductor-etf-shoc-ahead-of-potential-china-taiwan-annexation-businesswire-com/ COLUMBUS, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Strive Asset Management (“Strive”) launches its third index fund today, the Strive U.S. Semiconductor ETF (NYSE: SHOC, expense ratio: 0.40%), offering investors the opportunity to gain broad exposure to the U.S. semiconductor sector amid escalating geopolitical risk in Taiwan, the nation responsible for manufacturing 60% of the world’s foundry semiconductors. Semiconductors are the essential computing hardware for mobile phones, computers, cars, and even refrigerators. Global Semiconductor demand is estimated to grow over 80% by 2030.1 Strive’s ETF launch comes at a time of unprecedented cross-Straits tension. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) appears very likely to select Xi Jinping for a third term as China’s leader, breaking the historical two-term chain of succession and making President Xi the longest-serving Chinese ruler since Mao Zedong. Strive believes this increases the risk that China will attempt to annex Taiwan in the near future, exacerbating global semiconductor supply shortages and increasing the risk of economic calamity in the U.S. and other countries. Strive anticipates that U.S. semiconductor stocks could potentially outperform the market if China were to annex Taiwan. Through SHOC, Strive mandates U.S. semiconductor companies to prepare for this scenario by increasing domestic production capabilities, providing long-term opportunity and potential growth in the industry. At launch, only 12% of the plant, property, and equipment (PPE) of the companies in the Strive U.S. Semiconductor ETF are exposed to China/Taiwan risk. Vivek Ramaswamy, Strive’s executive chairman and co-founder said, “Our global economy is dependent on access to Taiwanese-produced semiconductors, which may effectively go to zero if China escalates its political and military tactics against Taiwan. We think that U.S. semiconductor stocks offer a potential hedge against this risk, especially if U.S. semiconductor companies prepare themselves to fill the supply vacuum created by a potential blockade or invasion of Taiwan. We plan to deliver that message as a shareholder to these companies, unapologetically and without regard to Chinese business interests: unlike many of our larger competitors, Strive does not and will not operate an asset management business in China.” About SHOC: The Strive U.S. Semiconductor ETF (SHOC) seeks to track the total return performance, before fees and expenses, of the Solactive United States Semiconductor 30 Capped Index (the “Index”) composed of U.S.-listed equities in the semiconductor sector. The benchmark does not pursue any environmental, social, governance (ESG) objectives. Investors can learn more at www.strivefunds.com/SHOC. Technology Sector Risk. The Fund will have exposure to companies operating in the technology sector. Technology companies, including information technology companies, may have limited product lines, financial resources and/or personnel. New Fund Risk. The Fund is a recently organized management investment company with limited operating history. There can be no assurance that the Fund will grow to or maintain an economically viable size. Geopolitical/Natural Disaster Risks. Because the Fund is non-diversified, it may be more sensitive to economic, business, political, or other changes affecting individual issuers or investments than a diversified fund, which may result in greater fluctuation in the value of the Fund’s Shares and greater risk of loss. Passive Investment Risk. The Fund is not actively managed, and the Sub-Adviser will not sell any investments due to current or projected underperformance of the securities.
