FORT MYERS, Fla. — On Wednesday, limited flights started back up again at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) after Hurricane Ian closed its runways.
Families whose homes were robbed by Hurricane Ian, like Maureen and Craig from Fort Myers Beach (FMB), were using the re-opened runways on Wednesday to seek shelter.
“My husband has to get a hip replacement surgery which will not be able to take place now because we have no place to live down here,” said Maureen.
Maureen’s husband Craig said just two days earlier, police told them they had to leave their FMB home.
“The cops actually escorted us back to our condo and said ‘You got to get off,’” said Craig.
Maureen and Craig’s trip back to Connecticut meant leaving behind what’s left of their home.
An emotional time for many Southwest Florida locals from Fort Myers Beach to Sanibel Island.
“Yesterday the Mayor said it’s uninhabitable,” said one traveler who held back tears as she walked to the concourse.
Other travelers at RSW said Hurricane Ian created a vacation nightmare, they are ready to wake up from.
It’s a different story for David and Deb Keller who live in North Fort Myers and were vacationing in Detroit when the storm made landfall.
“It’s just nice to get home.”
David Keller and his wife Deb said they jumped on RSW’s first returning flight since closing down to answer the call they heard, while up north in the motor city.
“You are sitting up north and your neighbors are calling ya and you are wondering okay, what can I do for them, so it’s hard to sit up there and not be able to do anything,” said Keller.
I asked David Keller at RSW how quickly he wanted to get home.
“I can hardly wait to get back and get at it, ya know,” said Keller.
Deb Keller can hardly wait to help rebuild what Hurricane Ian temporarily took from them.
“We wanted to be on this flight, and not be tomorrow or the next day we wanted to get home and start helping others and see what our home is like even,” said Deb Keller.
An idea welcomed by airport staff and shown throughout the airport on signs that read, “Welcome back, we missed you.”

2022 Arizona Election: Dates and Deadlines to Know
The Arizona General Election is fast-approaching, with early ballots set to begin hitting mailboxes a week from today. Whether you’re a vote-by-mail voter or prefer to show up to the polls, here are the key dates and deadlines to know to make sure your ballot counts:
Deadline to register: October 11 at 11:59 PM is the last day for voter registrations. Arizonans can check their registration status or register to vote at my.arizona.vote. Voters in Maricopa County can also check their status through the County Recorder here.
Planning to vote early? Counties will mail early ballots for voters on the Active Early Voting List on October 12. Vote centers for in-person early voting will also open on this day and drop boxes for early ballots will be available. Voters in Maricopa County can find vote center locations and hours of operation at Locations.Maricopa.Vote.
The deadline to request a mail-in ballot and to sign up for the Active Early Voting List (AEVL) is October 28 at 5:00 PM. Arizonans can find more information here. Voters in Maricopa County can sign up for the AEVL or request a one-time early ballot at Request.Maricopa.Vote.
November 1 is the recommended deadline for early voters to mail back their ballots. After this day, voters can drop off their early ballots at their County Recorder’s office or at any drop box or vote center location in the county.
Election Day is November 8 and all ballots must be received by 7:00 PM to be counted. Arizonans voting in person must present a valid government issued ID that includes their name, photo, and address. Examples include an Arizona driver’s license, an Arizona non-operating identification license, or a tribal enrollment card.

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance’s (“TDCI”) Division of Securities is joining the North American Securities Administrators Association (“NASAA”) to share an Informed Investor Advisory cautioning investors to protect themselves from investment scams and frauds offered in the unregulated metaverse, the online virtual “world” that provides users with immersive experiences through virtual or augmented reality technologies.
The metaverse may offer numerous potential investment opportunities, including virtual real estate, nonfungible tokens (“NFT”) and other businesses. But the advisory warns that the lack of regulation in the metaverse, combined with the ability to operate from anywhere in the world, make it easy for fraudsters to hide their financial schemes. In addition, security lapses on some developing platforms and the ability to build fake metaverse experiences can lead to hacks, fraud, or the theft of users’ funds.
“All investments come with some risk, and no one can be guaranteed against loss when it comes to an investment,” said TDCI Commissioner Carter Lawrence. “While the metaverse promises the benefits of new technology, scammers will use it to dress up the same old financial scams and prey on investors in the metaverse. Tennesseans need to be wary of any investment that is promising unrealistic returns with minimal risk.”
The advisory explains the risk of metaverse-focused investment scams and frauds, and how investors can protect themselves if they are considering investing in this emerging realm.
TDCI and NASAA are providing the following tips to help investors identify common telltale signs of possible investment fraud in the metaverse:
Understand the risks and make sure you are comfortable with them, including the possibility that you might lose your entire investment.
Verify that the person or entity offering the investment is registered with one or more securities regulators. Visit TDCI’s Securities division online here.
Avoid discussing investments or sharing personal or account information with avatars, or digital representations of users that can take on any appearance or personal attribute. Fraudsters may try to leverage shared interests, ideas, and goals to build trust and convince investors to invest in phony investment schemes.
Steer clear of metaverse crypto or NFT investment offers and avoid investment advice in the metaverse.
Be wary of misinformation including fake news and online celebrity gossip as scammers write fake online articles and social media posts that create buzz by falsely stating a celebrity or public figure is involved in technology investment.
“Investors should remember that the rules that apply to investments in the physical world also apply to investments in virtual worlds,” said TDCI Assistant Commissioner for Securities Elizabeth Bowling. “When considering any investment, investors should watch for signs of fraud and objectively consider all the information available before making the investment.”

A crackdown by the Taliban has led to a collapse in cryptocurrency use in Afghanistan following a surge last year when the nation was cut off from global banking and international aid, according to a study.
The value of crypto received in the country has fallen to an average of less than $80,000 a month since November, down from a peak of more than $150 million in September last year just after the Taliban swept back to power, according to a report by blockchain research firm Chainalysis.
“The Taliban’s crackdown has had a massive chilling effect on the country’s crypto markets,” according to the report, which added that “crypto dealers are left with three options: flee the country, cease operations, or risk arrest.”
Afghans turned to virtual coins as a lifeline to receive foreign remittances and donations, as well as to shield savings from the Taliban, who were shunned internationally after taking charge in the wake of a chaotic US withdrawal.
In August, the regime imposed a nationwide ban on crypto, calling it “haram” — or sinful business. The Taliban arrested 13 crypto dealers who defied orders to stop trading digital tokens. They were later released on bail pending trial.
Chainalysis said Afghanistan has dropped to the bottom of its crypto adoption index after placing 20th last year.
The Middle East and North Africa crypto market overall is relatively small but among the fastest growing, according to the researcher: Users there received $566 billion in crypto from July 2021 to June 2022, up 48% from a year earlier.

NEW YORK, Oct 5 (Reuters) – The dollar rebounded from recent weakness on Wednesday as investors viewed the U.S. Federal Reserve’s aggressive stance on interest rates as likely unchanged, with the euro and sterling down at least 1% each.
The euro was down 1% at $0.9892, and was set for its biggest daily percentage slide since Sept. 23, after rising 1.7% on Tuesday.
Sterling was down 1.1% at $1.1344 after rising for six straight sessions. Its fall extended slightly as UK Prime Minister Liz Truss pledged to bring down debt as a share of national income, just over a week after the government’s plans to slash taxes and ramp up borrowing spooked markets.

Adding to the pressure on the pound, data showed Britain’s private-sector economy last month suffered the sharpest contraction in activity since a COVID-19 lockdown early last year.
A dollar index measuring the greenback against a basket of currencies was last up about 1%. On Tuesday, it had its biggest daily percentage decline since March 2020.
Recent gains for most major currencies against the dollar have been underpinned by hope among investors and traders that the Fed will raise interest rates by less than previously expected.
“You had a general risk-on where the euro, sterling really traded well and the stock market gained. I kind of think this is just (investors) exploring a trading range,” said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex in New York.
“The bottom line is the bounce in risk assets is not taking place because of a change in Fed views,” he said.
On Wednesday, the ADP National Employment report showed private employment rose by 208,000 in September, above the 200,000 consensus forecast of economists polled by Reuters, while separately the Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) non-manufacturing PMI reading came in slightly above expectations.
Also, U.S. Fed Governor Philip Jefferson reiterated overnight that inflation was the top target for policymakers and that growth would suffer in efforts to bring it down.
San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly took a softer line and said the impact of the dollar, which is up sharply this year, on other currencies and economies was a concern.
From here, investors are likely to focus on Friday’s U.S. jobs report, Bannockburn’s Chandler said, which will be watched for clues on the possible trajectory of the Fed’s monetary policy.
In other currencies, the dollar was up 0.2% against the Japanese yen , while the dollar was up 0.4% at 7.0676 against China’s offshore yuan . Chinese authorities have come out in recent weeks with maneuvers to slow the yuan’s slide.
A fifth consecutive 50-basis-point rate hike from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) on Wednesday reminded investors that inflation remains the main focus of central banks.
The New Zealand dollar was last up 0.1% at $0.5744, having jumped as much as 1.3% earlier in the session. The Aussie dollar was near flat at $0.6502.

Russia has devised yet another way to spread disinformation about its invasion of Ukraine, using digital tricks that allow its war propaganda videos to evade restrictions imposed by governments and tech companies.
Accounts linked to Russian state-controlled media have used the new method to spread dozens of videos in 18 different languages, all without leaving telltale signs that would give away the source, researchers at Nisos, a U.S.-based intelligence firm that tracks disinformation and other cyber threats, said in a report released Wednesday.
The videos push Kremlin conspiracy theories blaming Ukraine for civilian casualties as well as claims that residents of areas forcibly annexed by Russia have welcomed their occupiers.
English-language versions of the Russian propaganda videos are now circulating on Twitter and lesser-known platforms popular with American conservatives, including Gab and Truth Social, created by former President Donald Trump, giving Russia a direct conduit to millions of people.
In an indication of the Kremlin’s ambitions and the sprawling reach of its disinformation operations, versions of the videos were also created in Spanish, Italian, German and more than a dozen other languages.
“The genius of this approach is that the videos can be downloaded directly from Telegram and it erases the trail that researchers try to follow,” Nisos’ senior intelligence analyst Patricia Bailey told The Associated Press. “They are creative and adaptable. And they are analyzing their audience.”
The European Union moved to ban RT and Sputnik, two of Russia’s leading state-run media outlets, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February. Tech companies such as Google’s YouTube and Meta’s Facebook and Instagram also announced they would ban content from the outlets within the 27-nation EU, undermining Russia’s ability to spread its propaganda.
Russian attempts to get around the new rules began almost immediately. New websites were created to host videos that make debunked claims about the war. Russian diplomats took on some of the work.
The latest effort revealed by analysts at Nisos involved uploading propaganda videos to Telegram, a loosely moderated platform that is broadly popular in Eastern Europe and used by many conservatives in the United States. In some cases, watermarks identifying the video as RT’s were removed in a further attempt to disguise their source.
Once on Telegram, the videos were downloaded and reposted on platforms including Twitter without any labels or other indications that the video was produced by Russian state media. Hundreds of accounts that later posted or reposted the videos were linked by Nisos researchers to the Russian military, embassies or state media.
Some of the accounts appeared to use fake profile photos or posted content in strange ways that suggested they were inauthentic.
One example: a Twitter account supposedly run by a woman living in Japan that had a singular interest in Russian propaganda. Instead of posting about a variety of topics such as entertainment, food, travel or family, the account user only posted Russian propaganda videos — and not just in Japanese, but also in Farsi, Polish, Spanish and Russian.
The account also cited or reposted content from Russian embassies hundreds of times, researchers found, showing again the close relationship between Russian diplomats and the country’s propaganda work.
When it comes to Russia’s overall disinformation capabilities, Bailey said, the network is “just one piece of a puzzle that is quite large.”
Twitter labels content that it can identify as coming from Russian state media. Since late February, the company says it’s added labels to more than 900,000 different Tweets that contained links to Russian state outlets like RT. In addition, the platform does not artificially promote content from state media accounts.
“We use labels to make it clear on Twitter when an account is operated by a state actor, such as a state-backed media outlet, and we will not recommend or amplify Tweets from these types of accounts,” a company spokesperson told The AP.
More examples of Russian disinformation campaigns have emerged as the war has dragged on.
Last week, Russia sought to spread a baseless conspiracy theory blaming the U.S. for sabotage to the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.
The same week, Meta announced the discovery of a sprawling Russian disinformation network that created websites designed to look like major European news outlets. Instead of news, the websites carried propaganda intended to drive a wedge between Ukraine and its western allies.
That operation was the largest of its kind to originate in Russia since the war began, researchers concluded.
“The network exhibited an overarching pattern of targeting Europe with anti-Ukraine narratives and expressions of support for Russian interests,” according to a report from the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, which helped identify the network disabled by Meta.

Mitchell Pally, the CEO of the Long Island Builders Institute, has been appointed to the boards of the Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency and the town’s Local Development Corporation.
Pally, who’s led LIBI since Dec. 2010, will be retiring as the organization’s CEO at the end of the year. He previously served as a member of the IDA for 15 years, leaving the agency’s board in 2008.
“It is an honor to be selected by our town board to once again assist in the continuing development and improvement of my local community,” Pally said in a written statement.
Pally has also served as the Suffolk County representative to the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, leaving in 2019 after 14 years. Prior to joining LIBI, Pally was the partner in charge of government relations for the Weber Law Group, and before that was vice president for governmental affairs at the Long Island Association.
“It’s a privilege to welcome Mitch Pally back to our board,” Fred Braun, chairman of both Brookhaven economic development agencies, said in the statement. “We will benefit from his years of experience as our economic development efforts move forward.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued an alert Wednesday over four cough and cold syrups made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals in India, warning they could be linked to the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia.
The UN health agency also cautioned that the contaminated medications may have been distributed outside of the West African country, with global exposure “possible.”
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the four cold and cough syrups in question “have been potentially linked with acute kidney injuries and 66 deaths among children.”
“The loss of these young lives is beyond heartbreaking for their families.”
Tedros said that WHO was also “conducting further investigation with the company and regulatory authorities in India.”
According to the medical product alert issued by WHO Wednesday, the four products are Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup.
“To date, the stated manufacturer has not provided guarantees to WHO on the safety and quality of these products,” the alert said, adding that laboratory analysis of samples of the products “confirms that they contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants.”
Those substances are toxic to humans and can be fatal, it said, adding that the toxic effect “can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death.”
The Gambia’s health ministry asked hospitals last month to stop using a syrup paracetamol, pending the outcome of an investigation, after at least 28 children died of kidney failure.
WHO said that information received from India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation indicated that the manufacturer had only supplied the contaminated medications to The Gambia.
“However, the supply of these products through informal or unregulated markets to other countries in Africa, cannot be ruled out,” the UN agency said in an email.
“In addition, the manufacturer may have used the same contaminated material in other products and distributed them locally or exported,” it warned.
“Global exposure is therefore possible.”
Tedros urged caution, calling on all countries to work to “detect and remove these products from circulation to prevent further harm to patients.”
The Gambian health ministry’s advice on syrup paracetamol was issued on September 9, a month after investigators reported the death of at least 28 children aged five months to four years from acute renal failure.
The investigation had been opened on July 19. No details were given as to when the children died.

(Kitco News) – Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced plans to further promote the use of the Metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) during a public policy speech delivered before Japan’s National Diet.
“We will also promote efforts to expand the use of Web 3.0 services that utilize Metaverse and NFT,” Kishida said during Monday’s speech dedicated to digital transformation and the advancement of digital technology.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the government’s investment in the ongoing digital transformation already includes the issuance of NFTs to local authorities using digital technology to solve jurisdictional disagreements.
Kashida was referring to the “Summer Digi Denkoshien 2022” ceremony held in September, where seven local mayors were awarded NFTs for their utilization of digital technology to solve local challenges.
Web3 development has been highlighted as a point of focus for Kashida, who made it one of his pillars of economic revitalization after coming into office in 2021.
In April, Kishida’s Liberal Democratic Party published an “NFT White Paper” that detailed Japan’s Web3 plans, including policy recommendations for user protection and advancing a national strategy for the Web3 era.
In July, his administration joined forces with the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) to launch a Web3 Policy Promotion Office to integrate Web3-related departments within the ministry. The office collects data from businesses across all sectors of society and incorporates relevant ministries and agencies to develop Web3-related projects.
This recent speech marks the latest advancement in the country’s focus on embracing a digital future by investing and promoting players in the Web3 space.
Increased demand for NFT trademarks
Despite the pullback in NFT prices in 2022 after a blowout year in 2021, interest in the burgeoning sector continues to increase as more people around the world are introduced to the technology.
According to figures compiled by trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis that were pulled from U.S. Patent and Trademark Office data, the number of trademark applications relating to NFTs and other blockchain products that have been filed in 2022, as of the end of September, is 6,366.
For comparison, the total number of trademark registrations in 2021 was 2,142, meaning that 2022 has already seen nearly triple the number of registrations with three months still left in the year. The 2021 total was originally surpassed in March, the most active filing month of 2022, when a total of 1,080 registrations were submitted.
March of 2022 was the hottest month for NFT-related trademark filings, with 1,080 submitted. Every subsequent month in 2022 had lower filings, with a 15% decrease between August and September of this year.

The number of new monthly filings has been on the decline since March, which coincides with the dramatic downturn in the crypto market that was sparked by the implosion of Terra/Luna and its TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin.

My favorite feel-good WEBTOON returned from hiatus last week and kicked off its second season! Yes, I’m talking about StarBite, CRC Payne, Kielamel Sibal, Lan Ma, C.M. Cameron and Camille Cruz‘s Eisner award-nominated Batman: Wayne Family Adventures. For the uninitiated, this is a slice-of-life series starring Bruce Wayne/Batman and the family he’s formed. Regular characters include all five Robins (Dick, Jason, Stephanie, Tim and Damian), Barbara Gordon (as Oracle), Cassandra Cain and Duke Thomas. And, of course, Alfred Pennyworth, the heart of this found family.
While the hero/vigilante aspects of the group are maintained, Batman: Wayne Family Adventures puts its emphasis squarely on the “family” parts of its characterizations. Everyday problems take the forefront. Like, will dad Bruce make it to daughter Cass’s ballet recital? Will big brother Dick recognize little brother Tim misses spending time with him? This is a series where the emotional connections between characters underpin everything else.

Batman: Wayne Family Adventures went on a brief hiatus in August after the first season, which comprised of fifty-one episodes. Season Two, which launched September 28, 2022, has kicked off with Episode 52 and the introduction of a character as-yet-unseen in the WEBTOON – Bluebird. I love all of the regular characters in this series so much. But the “guest stars” are a lot of fun, too. Inspired by Bluebird (a character I’m unfamiliar with) and in celebration of the new season, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite guest-star episodes from season one.

This is also a great example of the way Batman: Wayne Family Adventures humanizes Bruce Wayne (who is not exactly at his most suave and sophisticated here.)

Damian thinks he’s found something blackmail-worthy on Jason when he discovers a copy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice in Jason’s things. Jason (upping his cool quotient considerably for me) sets him straight. Consequently, while Jason calmly cleans his weapons, Damian spends the rest of the night reading Austen. This might be my favorite Batman: Wayne Family Adventure episode.

I don’t know too much about Talia al Ghul, but this episode has me interested in exploring her backstory. How did she and Bruce/Batman get together? What is her relationship with Damian going forward? The heart she shows here, contrasted with what I already know of her as the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul and an assassin, intrigues me.

The Joker doesn’t actually appear here, except in Jason’s memory, but he looms powerfully. And the importance of family ties and friendship in the healing process is beautifully portrayed.

Hoping to capitalize on the rebounding crypto markets, San Francisco-based crypto index fund provider Bitwise has rolled out BWEB, a new Web3 exchange-traded fund (ETF).
ETFs are financial instruments that trade on an exchange like stock, but track a specific market or asset, such as bitcoin (BTC).
“Today, many experts believe we’re on the cusp of a major evolution in the core architecture of the internet,” Matt Hougan, Bitwise’s Chief Investment Officer, said in a statement. “With the Bitwise Web3 ETF, we’re excited to give investors the opportunity to capture one of the fastest-emerging themes in technology through a diverse mix of companies that we believe will lead the charge.”
“More than 85% of the index is comprised of ‘pure-play’ companies directly linked to Web3 themes and business activities,” the statement said.
A factsheet presenting the product states that, as of October 4, the ETF’s top ten holdings included crypto exchange Coinbase, online gaming platform Roblox, data center specialist Equinix, game developer Unity Software, Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms, social media platform Twitter, online retail specialist Shopify, networking and cyber-security business Cloudflare, game developer Electronic Arts, and game publisher Take-Two Interactive.
With more than $1.3 billion in assets under management, the San Francisco-based firm says it is one of the largest crypto asset managers in the market.
BWEB trades on the NYSE Arca, a U.S. securities exchange on which exchange-traded products (ETPs) and equities are listed. The Bank of New York Mellon is the ETF’s custodian and administrator, according to data from Bitwise.

Carrie Lynn Greer, 35, of Fredericktown, MO, formerly of Piedmont, MO, and Phoenix, AZ, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2022, near Annapolis, MO.
Carrie was born October 16, 1986, to parents Vernon and Anita (Cameron) Greer in Phoenix, AZ. Carrie lived her life in service to others; whether it be through her church at Meadow Heights in Fredericktown or her job as an investigative supervisor with the Missouri Children’s Division 42nd circuit. She truly cared for others and had a tremendous heart. She achieved great success in the academic world. Carrie graduated from Clearwater High School in 2005 and from Southeast Missouri State University with three bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice, sociology, and psychology. She recently received her Master of Social Work and was scheduled to walk at Arizona State University commencement in December. Carrie had been active in Tri Sigma sorority and a member of Phi Alpha, an honors society for social workers. After SEMO, she moved to Texas to be nearer to her brothers and became employed at Denton County Mental Health and Suicide Prevention where she served for a few years. Even though she loved Texas, she missed her sister and father in Missouri. Carrie considered herself a gypsy soul, that was forever in search of her next adventure. She considered her heart home Phoenix, AZ. She was truly a desert child. Carrie’s hobbies included going to concerts, Broadway musicals, fishing, hunting, kayaking, camping, playing D&D, float trips, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She was a fan of the Atlanta Braves and Arizona Sun Devils. It was often said that she was overly obsessed with gnomes and nutcrackers. Every year Carrie organized a gift donation during the Christmas season for the foster children of the 42nd circuit, ensuring each child had a present to open at Christmas.
Carrie is survived by her father, Vernon Greer, of Piedmont, MO; sister: Tarina Greer of Springfield, MO; brothers: Vernon “Buddy” Greer and wife Serena of Lewisville, TX, Douglas Greer and wife Michelle of Little Elm, TX; nieces and nephews: Cameron MacGregor, DeeAnna and Shelby Greer, Selena Larsen, Chloe Greer and JoAnn Greer; great nieces and nephews: Hagen Russel J. Galart, Allison Grace Galart, Quinn Raeleigh Galart and Lars Larsen III; God babies: Dakota Bowers and Alexander Bowers; and last but not least her fur baby Jezzebelle, which was her “Ride or Die.”
Carrie was preceded in death by her mother Anita Greer; two sisters: Amanda Greer and Doris Greer.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation was held at 4:00 pm, Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont Chapel. A memorial service followed at 5:00 pm, also in the Piedmont Chapel. Pastor Bryan Mills ministered to the family. Lora Bowles, Pamela Hawkins Henson, Cheryl and Doug Enyart gave a heart felt eulogy and shared memories. RALEIGH, NC – Older North Carolinians, who now outnumber younger ones, love where they live. But a primary concern when it comes to aging, is having the ability to live independently for as long as possible according to a new AARP survey of adults ages 45 and older.
A collaborative effort between AARP and the State of North Carolina called, “Age My Way NC,” asked people how their communities, counties, and rural areas are meeting the needs of the state’s growing population of older adults.
Age My Way NC is an effort to identify and prioritize the needed changes to support what has become the state’s largest population group, older adults. The findings the group released today are based on a statewide survey of 3,209 residents. It was conducted between May 2, through August 26, 2022, and has a margin of error of 1.8 percent.
Governor Roy Cooper, who addressed the Age my Way NC Summit where the survey results are being examined said, “Our aging population strengthens our state and our communities. We’ll continue working to make North Carolina a place where seniors can live long lives of engagement and purpose.”
NC Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Kody H. Kinsley said, “We are committed to improving the health and well-being of everyone living in North Carolina across their lifespan. At NCDHHS, efforts in each of our top priorities — supporting behavioral health and resilience, strengthening child and family well-being, and building a strong and inclusive workforce – work together to ensure older adults can thrive.”
Age My Way NC collaborator Mary Penny Kelley, Executive Director of Hometown Strong, a Governor’s initiative helping react to the needs of rural communities said, “Supporting older adults is matter of common sense and dollars and cents. They account for 40 percent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 40 percent of our jobs.”
Director of the NC Division on Aging and Adult Services Joyce Massey-Smith said, “In just a few short years, there will be more people living in North Carolina over age 65 that under 17. Knowing how we can best support people at the community and state level is vital when it comes to healthy aging in the state.”
Age My Way NC Survey Findings:
While most said they want to stay in the current homes and communities as long as possible, there were several major factors for moving including: homes didn’t allow for independent living, social isolation’s negative impact on health, as well as expenses of needed services to maintain their homes.
Living Independently – Key Findings
99% of survey respondents said that it is important to live independently in their own home as they age.
76% of survey respondents rated their current community as an “excellent, very good or good” place to live as they age.
53% of survey respondents said they are likely to stay in their current home and never move, while 17% said they would relocate within their community and 30% said they would relocate elsewhere.
22% of survey respondents said they feel isolated from others and 31 percent said they have a lack of companionship.
Other significant factors for leaving their home were personal safety and security issues; desiring to live in an area with better health care facilities; relocating to be closer to family; requiring more access to public transportation; needing to live in an area with a lower cost of living; eager to live in a community with more opportunities for interaction.
Healthcare – Key Findings:
38% of respondents said that access to well-trained certified home health care providers was “excellent, very good or good,” and only 28% said that care is affordable. Also ranked low, was the availability of affordable home care services such as personal care and housekeeping.
Living independently also requires services including transportation options, homes designed for senior living, access to public spaces, availability to health care and home health, and being able to be a participant in community activities and not be isolated.
Mobility and access to public transportation – Key Findings:
Only 22% of respondents ranked access to public transportation as “excellent or very good.”
Only 26% ranked public transportation as affordable.
Respondents gave high ranking to easy-to-read traffic signs and low rankings to the availability of separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians.
The Age My Way NC Survey results were released during the Age My Way NC Summit sponsored by the Governor’s Initiative “Hometown Strong,” the NC Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Aging and Adult Service, and AARP North Carolina.
AARP North Carolina President Dr. Catherine Sevier concluded, “Like our partners here today, AARP supports the efforts of neighborhoods, towns, cities and rural areas to be great places for people of all ages. We believe that communities should provide safe, walkable streets; age-friendly housing and transportation options; access to needed services; and opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in community life.”

According to Khan, creating value across the board is a virtuous cycle that build a positive ecosystem as it moves from making a good product to marketing it effectively, attracting more investors and eventually building an even better product.
This is why companies like Mastercard are excited about jumping on new experiences like the ones Atlas Earth — a product made by Atlas Reality — offers in the metaverse. “What marketers and retailers are looking for is basically access to consumers in the channels of their choosing,” according to Chuang. The metaverse does a good job at “extending reach to a segment of the audience that many marketers and retailers prize,” Chuang said.
However, how are marketers investing in this new terrain?
Experimental budgets versus performance marketing
In understanding the principles and considerations that drive marketers’ spending, Khan and Paley offered two perspectives: experimental budgets and performance marketing, respectively.
Khan described the experimental budget as similar to the 70-20-10 rule. “Seventy percent of your budget, you put in things you are sure will work and you barely need to check every day. You put 20% in things you think should work but you have to closely monitor and improve. 10% of the budget, you put in things you’re sure won’t work but you feel you have to do because of FOMO (fear of missing out) — and if it does work, it could be part of the 80%,” he said.
Where investing in a metaverse-powered marketing strategy falls on that spectrum, Khan didn’t say. However, Paley presented a contrasting view that avoids experimental budgeting (and marketing) altogether. “What I want to do is put my money into channels that are going to deliver positive returns on ad-spend.”
For platforms like Atlas Earth, where brands can set up shop and have players purchase items using the in-app currency, Paley noted that the “experiment” is not to test whether the channel will work or not — the real question is whether it will be“good” or “great.”
In today’s marketplace “where customers want things now,” according to Paley, the metaverse might just get more valuable. Speaking on how that works, he said “the metaverse is about bringing disparate parties together for real-time experiences, and anytime there is the opportunity to increase the value of the experience of the person having it in the real world, you’re delivering on something special.”
For enterprise decision-makers like Khan, Chuang and Paley, a healthy metaverse ecosystem seems possible. However, they say it will only happen when stakeholders achieve a balance between generating value for users and getting good (or even great) ROI on their marketing investments. In Khan’s words, “It is our job collectively to think about how we can build a healthy win-win ecosystem as quickly as possible … because the technology will surely evolve and get better, but we cannot wait for that to happen.”

Terra Classic (LUNC) continues to show extreme volatility in the market on a massive amount of trading volume.
The coin – often referred to as Terra Luna Classic – is down 4% over 24hrs but remained in the top 10 by trading volume in the same time period with $440 million of LUNC traded.
Despite its extreme volatility, LUNC remains 7% up in the past seven days at the time of writing and more than 30,000% up from its May low following the de-pegging and collapse of the original Terra Luna coin and UST stablecoin.
Price Prediction – Can LUNC Reach $1 by 2023?
Terra Classic is now a community-led coin with very little real-world utility.
While the voracious community has driven incredible gains over the last six months, the possibility of LUNC reaching $1 appears slim without drastic action and change.
Trillions of new coins were created when the protocol spiraled out of control and the current supply of LUNC stands at more than 6 trillion (6,000,000,000,000) – a mind-boggling number that currently makes it near-impossible for LUNC to ever reach $1 in its current state.
For context, the market cap of the entire crypto space is currently less than $1 trillion and, effectively, to reach $1 every single cent in every single crypto coin would have to be redirected to LUNC – and then multiplied by more than six.
However, there are some reasons for cautious optimism.
Staking has been live for a number of weeks with millions of coins taken off exchanges by the community.
Thanks to community efforts and feedback the world’s largest exchange, Binance, is now burning all trading fees collected from LUNC trading.
The burn started on September 21 and, according to the exchange, nearly 5.6 billion LUNC tokens – equating to approximately $1.8 million – were sent to a burn address.
The burn will be ongoing with a weekly report released every Tuesday and there is hope other exchanges will follow Binance’s lead.
The LUNC community is currently pushing another exchange, KuCoin, to adopt a burn mechanism and asking Coinbase to list the token, given its huge volume.
It was also reported that Lithosphere developers Kaj Labs will burn 2.5 trillion LUNC in their new Finesse series of games and have facilitated $50 to $100 million to facilitate the burn.
If true, that burn would drastically slash the supply of LUNC and drive up its price.
However, the news was met with a mixed reaction by the LUNC community, with one prominent member, LUNCDAO, claiming the press release was “dishonest marketing to get viral engagement”.
Terra Luna Classic reaching $1 still seems a very long way off and from its current price would mean growth of more than 300,000%.
That is not to say that it will not continue to make investors good gains in the short, medium and long terms, but without a significant slashing of the supply soon, it appears unlikely to see that kind of growth in the next 12 months.
Further, LUNC’s lack of utility makes it more open to volatility and attractive to speculative traders – pumps are open to being followed by dumps as investors take profits rather than hold as there is little long-term value in the project.
One alternative project that offers a lot of real-world utility is IMPT, a new green project that wants to help solve the climate crisis by offsetting users’ carbon footprints – $500,000 has been raised in the first 48 hours of the presale.

, /PRNewswire/ — With a focus on the environment and sustainability, Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) is utilizing innovative technology to reduce emissions while supporting efforts by its parent Southern Company, to reach net-zero direct greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Because of that commitment, VNG is focusing on several initiatives to improve natural gas service reliability and sustainability efforts that are reducing greenhouse gas emissions while safely delivering natural gas to customers.
One initiative is the use of cross-compression technology, a process by which natural gas is transferred from one pipeline to another during large construction and repair projects. When a pipeline is being decommissioned, repaired or inspected, natural gas must first be removed from the pressurized pipe. Before advances in cross-compression technology, small amounts of natural gas would be vented or flared into the atmosphere before the repair could be completed.
By using innovative cross-compression technology like Zero Emissions Vacuum and Compressor, or ZEVAC, natural gas is captured during maintenance or inspection and recycled back into the pipeline system for continued use. This results in less gas or methane entering the atmosphere.
“At VNG, our focus is on being good environmental stewards for a more sustainable future,” said Robert Duvall, president of Virginia Natural Gas. “It’s more important than ever to make progress in sustainability efforts while contributing to nationwide and global environmental goals. The ability to capture methane before it is released with cross-compression technology will provide lasting and positive effects on our environment.”
Now, using two ZEVAC machines purchased by the company, natural gas can be evacuated from one pipeline, with up to 99% transferred back into the pipeline system at a different location instead of being released into the atmosphere. A bonus is that the mobile units can fit in a standard truck cargo bed and are easily transported to worksites.
So far in 2022, VNG has saved 42 mcf of natural gas not vented into the atmosphere, the equivalent of recycling 6.9 cubic tons of waste not taken to a landfill.
“The use of cross-compression technology is helping VNG achieve our carbon reduction goals in a cost-effective and efficient way,” added Duvall. “ZEVAC is just one example of how we are using technology as part of our strategy to provide a clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy future for our customers and communities.”
