UK’s Truss Stands By ‘disruption’ Agenda Despite Tory Doubts – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/uks-truss-stands-by-disruption-agenda-despite-tory-doubts-69news-wfmz-tv/
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss pledged Wednesday to ride out the turmoil unleashed by her tax-cutting economic agenda, saying the “disruption” will pay off in a wealthier, more efficient Britain.
Truss said “I am ready to make the hard choices.” Many in her party are not so sure.
Truss closed a tumultuous Conservative conference in the central English city of Birmingham with a speech intended to revive the spirits of delegates. Many are in a glum mood after a four-day gathering that saw policy U-turns from the government, dire opinion polls and open rebellion from lawmakers who fear the party is doomed to lose the next national election under Truss, who took office just a month ago after winning a party leadership vote.
Truss vowed to will stick with her plan to reshape Britain’s economy through tax cuts and deregulation in a bid to end years of sluggish growth. She said cutting taxes was “the right thing to do, morally and economically,” and accused her opponents of being “anti-growth.”
After taking the stage to the strains of the 1990s hit “Moving on Up,” Truss acknowledged that “these are stormy days” for a country still mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II and rocked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Truss shrugged off a brief protest by two Greenpeace activists who unfurled a banner in the hall reading “Who voted for this?” — and were escorted out of the hall to boos from the audience.
“Whenever there is change, there is disruption,” Truss said. “Not everyone will be in favor. But everyone will benefit from the result — a growing economy and a better future. That is what we have a clear plan to deliver.”
That plan already has many critics inside the Conservative Party. Truss’ first big policy, a stimulus package that includes 45 billion pounds ($50 billion) in tax cuts to be paid for by government borrowing, alarmed financial markets when it was announced Sept. 23. The pound plunged to a record low against the dollar, and the Bank of England was forced to intervene to prop up the bond market and stop a wider economic crisis.
Under political and financial pressure, the government on Monday scrapped the most unpopular part of its budget package: a tax cut on earnings above 150,000 pounds ($167,000) a year. That will save about 2 billion pounds, a small share of the government’s 45 billion-pound tax-cutting plan. Most economists say deep public spending cuts will be needed to pay for the rest.
The government says it will publish a fully costed fiscal plan, alongside an economic forecast from the independent Office for Budget Responsibility, on Nov. 23.
Truss defended the chaotic rollout of her economic measures, saying that in extraordinary times, “it would have been wrong not to have proceeded rapidly with our energy and tax plan.”
Truss argues that her policies will bring economic growth, higher wages and eventually more tax revenue for the government to spend. Critics say the plans do little to help millions of people who are struggling right now with a cost-of-living crisis fueled by soaring energy prices.
Truss insists she is committed to supporting the most vulnerable, pointing to a cap on energy prices that took effect Oct. 1. But she has refused to promise that benefits and state pensions will increase in line with inflation, which has been the practice for years.
That has alarmed some Conservative lawmakers, who say it amounts to penalizing the poor while giving tax cuts to the better-off. Several said during the conference that they would not vote for the measure.
Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, from the Labour Party, said cutting benefits would provoke a huge public backlash.
“There will be a national uprising if this goes ahead, because it is nothing to do with making the growth policies of the government work, it is simply making the poor pay the price,” he told the BBC.
In her speech, Truss depicted Britain’s economic challenges as part of the global crisis unleashed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as she vowed to “stand by our Ukrainian friends, however long it takes.”
“The scale of the challenge is immense,” she said. “War in Europe for the first time in a generation. A more uncertain world in the aftermath of COVID. And a global economic crisis. That is why in Britain we need to do things differently.”
In a dig at her critics, Truss said that as a woman and graduate of a public high school — in a party dominated by privately educated men — “I know how it feels to have your potential dismissed by those who think they know better.”
But uniting her party will be a tough task. As delegates met for panel discussions and wine receptions this week inside a cavernous conference hall, the government descended into factional fighting. Home Secretary Suella Braverman, a Truss ally, accused Conservative lawmakers who disagreed with Truss of staging “a coup.”
Amid the Tory turmoil, the opposition Labour Party has taken a commanding lead in opinion polls. A national election does not have to be held until 2024, but many Conservatives fear the party is running out of time to close the gap.
Polling expert John Curtice said “all of the ingredients for electoral defeat are in place” for the Conservatives.
“The question is whether or not in the end they are combined and put into the oven and thereby baked into the memories and perceptions of voters,” he told Sky News.

Binational Health Week stresses prevention, education among population often uninsured and in need of care

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Some 200 El Paso residents got free health screenings, flu and COVID-19 booster shots Tuesday at the Mexican consulate. It was part of Binational Health Week, which for the past 22 years has bridged the gap between local health providers and the immigrant community.
“Basically, what we do here is take their blood pressure, offer different tests so if they have any problems, they can be referred to low-cost clinics or hospitals or we can help them navigate the insurance system,” said Consul General Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de Leon.
Twenty-one El Paso hospitals, nonprofits and insurance companies are partnering with the consulate to promote healthy living. The El Paso Food Bank donated 200 boxes with food staples that were distributed to participants in a Tuesday health fair in the consulate’s parking lot.
Ibarra said talks about cancer, high blood pressure, mental health and others would take place throughout the month in Spanish online and in-person at the consulate. The U.S. Census July 2021 population estimate shows that nearly one in four El Paso County residents were foreign-born, and that 69.8 percent speak a language other than English at home.
Those numbers make the consulate a key player in community health education.
“We need to raise awareness of the importance of having good physical and mental health and that everybody knows they can reach out to a health provider regardless if they have insurance or not,” Ibarra said.
All of Mexico’s 50 consulates in the United States are observing Binational Health Week, though some may have it on a different date.
Maria Estrada (Border Report photo)
Maria Estrada, a Mexican national who says she has lived in El Paso for many years, was among the first in line at the screening tents. “I’m here for the tests, medical insurance information, everything they have here,” she said.
Others came for the flu and COVID-19 shots and the free foodstuffs.
“This is the first time I come to these fairs. I came here for the flu vaccine. I have all the COVID vaccines and all,” said Ana Lilia Perez.

Chelsea vs. AC Milan prediction, best bet
Best Bet: AC Milan moneyline
Odds: +390 (Caesars)
Prediction (Win/Draw): AC Milan
While normally I wouldn’t suggest betting a high-profile match that’s so evenly matched as this, the odds are just too good to pass up. In fact, the odds disparity between these two teams is downright criminal. It’s shocking that Chelsea, who sit bottom of the Champions League group and have looked shaky in the Premier League, are minus-odds favorites in this match against a very strong Italian side. Take advantage of this, as even if it eventually falls, it is well worth the potential upside.— Kyle Bonn

Best Bet: Under 3.5 goals
Odds:-125 (Caesars)
Prediction (Win/Draw):Real Madrid win
Real Madrid are clearly the better team here, but they’ve looked toothless in the absence of Luka Modric; Dani Ceballos just doesn’t present quite the same progressive danger. Shakhtar may have seen their roster depleted of international players by the temporary FIFA ruling on Ukrainian clubs, but it hasn’t shown, having picked up four points in the first two Champions League matches. Expect Real Madrid to control the ball and likely come out on top, but the Ukrainian club will present a stiff challenge. — Kyle Bonn

Kyle predicted Napoli to win big, which they did emphatically to the tune of a 6-1 result over Dutch champions Ajax, earning a big return. He also predicted a Marseille win over Sporting CP, but was also pegged back as the goals total in that match went just a hair over the predicted under.
It was another tough day for Simon as Bayern Munich put five past Viktoria Plzen, but none of the goalscorers were young, in-form superstar Jamal Musiala. He predicted goals in Eintract Frankfurt vs. Tottenham but instead the match ended in a forgettable 0-0 draw, with the two sides failing to score despite putting up a combined 2.46 xG. On another day, that over cashes.

With a market cap of roughly $5.7 billion, Asus is the world’s sixth largest producer of personal computers. As of October 5th, 2022, Asus becomes the latest major company to join the Web3 space after launching an NFT platform. However, Asus’ new NFT marketplace allows only a group of invited artists to list their NFTs at the moment, with plans to launch a secondary market soon.
Asus Unveils ‘Art Black hole’ as it Enters the Metaverse
Asus, a Taiwan-based electronics and hardware maker, announced the launch of its non-fungible token (NFT) platform Tuesday. The move marks the company’s first push into the growing Web3 space, following the footsteps of other Taiwanese manufacturers Foxconn and Ennoconn Corp.
The platform, named ‘Art Black hole‘, was launched under Asus’ new Web3 business Asus Metaverse. The Ethereum-powered NFT platform is currently open only to a select group of artists, the company’s spokesperson said in a statement.
Also, Art Black hole does not support secondary trading at the moment, but the laptop maker plans to launch it soon, according to the official website. Buyers can purchase NFTs in New Taiwan dollars, the spokesperson added.
“Asus pays close attention to the latest developments of emerging industries, and we’re particularly drawn by the potential of the Web3 industry.”

Metaverse Welcomes More Major Players
The launch of the Art Black hole comes with Asus’ new Web3 arm, Asus Metaverse. Asus’ new subsidiary seeks to integrate the company’s cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain capabilities to dive deeper into the metaverse.
Earlier this year, Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, which produces Apple’s iPhones, also forayed into the metaverse by partnering with and investing $100 million in XRSPACE, the maker of virtual reality (VR) devices.
More recently, Facebook owner Meta Platforms has also been focused on bringing NFTs to its two biggest platforms – Facebook and Instagram. As of Sept. 29, Facebook and Instagram users are able to link their wallets and cross-post NFTs to both platforms.
“In order to post a digital collectible, all you need to do is connect your digital wallet to Instagram. As of today, we support connections with third-party wallets including Rainbow, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet and Dapper Wallet coming soon. Supported blockchains at this time include Ethereum, Polygon and Flow.”
Introducing Digital Collectibles to Showcase NFTs on Instagram
The tech giant has rebranded from Facebook to Meta in 2021 to focus on building the metaverse and “the next chapter of social connection.” The company also unveiled a $50 million fund in September 2021 to research and develop the metaverse.

The Best And Worst James Bond Movies: ‘Goldfinger,’ ‘Skyfall,’ More – Insider https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-best-and-worst-james-bond-movies-goldfinger-skyfall-more-insider/
“Goldfinger.”
20th Century Fox
All the James Bond movies are now available on Prime Video.
You have to make sure to watch “Goldfinger,” “A View to a Kill,” and “Skyfall.”
Skip “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” “The World is Not Enough,” and “Spectre.”
Must-see: “Dr. No” (1962)
Sean Connery in “Dr. No.”
United Artists
The classic first movie in the franchise didn’t just introduce us to the dashing spy character based on the Ian Fleming novels, but also to the first 007 in movie history, Sean Connery.
Thanks to his good looks, charming Scottish accent, and action moves, he became the blueprint of a movie hero in the early 1960s.
Tying it all together was the story, which was just damn good. He faces the OG villain in the franchise, Dr. No.
Must-see: “From Russia With Love” (1963)
Sean Connery in “From Russia With Love.”
United Artists
Connery returned to play Bond in the second movie in the franchise. This time, he’s fighting bad guys on the Orient Express and Istanbul. And the gadgets he uses became a hallmark for most of the 007 movies going forward.
Must-see: “Goldfinger” (1964)
Sean Connery in “Goldfinger.”
United Artists
Arguably the greatest Bond movie in the Connery era, here he takes on the villain Auric Goldfinger (“No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die”), drives around in an Aston Martin, and saves Fort Knox from blowing up.
Must-see: “Thunderball” (1965)
Sean Connery in “Thunderball.”
Eon Productions
Connery is at it again, and though this one isn’t as good as “Goldfinger,” it still has top-notch action. Eye-patch villain Emilio Largo is one of the best in the franchise, too.
Also, this is the movie where Bond flies around on a jet pack!
Must-see: “You Only Live Twice” (1967)
(L-R) Sean Connery and Donald Pleasence in “You Only Live Twice.”
Eon Productions
With the story set in Japan, the sights are dazzling. And with the SPECTRE’s Number One Blofeld (played perfectly by Donald Pleasence) as the movie’s villain, things couldn’t get any better with his lair featuring piranhas and battles with ninjas.
Must-see: “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971)
Sean Connery in “Diamonds Are Forever.”
20th Century Fox
After retiring from the Bond role, which only lasted one movie (“On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”), Connery returned and proved he is the true Bond when he breaks up a diamond smuggling ring while also breaking some hearts.
Then he retired from the role. Sort of (more on that at the end).
Must-see: “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977)
(L-R) Roger Moore and Richard Kiel in “The Spy Who Loved Me.”
Eon Productions
For the third movie in the Roger Moore era, he finally hit his stride as Bond.
Teaming with a KGB agent, he has to track down missing submarines that are armed with ballistic missiles. And he also has to run from the clutches of the giant henchman Jaws, named that way thanks to his giant metal teeth.
Jaws, played by Richard Kiel, quickly became a fan favorite.
Must-see: “Moonraker” (1979)
Sean Connery and Lois Chiles in “Moonraker.”
United Artists
Trying to compete with the popularity of “Star Wars,” 007 goes to space in this mission.
It’s cheesy but lots of fun. Moore once again faces off with Jaws, which we can’t get enough of.
Sadly, it’s their final showdown. Not because Bond kills him, but because Jaws finds love by the end of the movie.
Must-see: “A View to a Kill” (1985)
Christopher Walken and Grace Jones in “A View to a Kill.”
Eon Productions
The Moore era closed with perhaps Bond’s most 1980s story.
Christopher Walken plays the villain, who chases Bond in a giant blimp. Grace Jones is the fantastic henchwoman, dressed throughout in amazing outfits. And the movie features the best Bond song of them all, performed by ’80s icons Duran Duran.
Must-see: “The Living Daylights” (1987)
Timothy Dalton in “The Living Daylights.”
United Artists
This movie marks the start of the Timothy Dalton era, and it began with a bang as he fits nicely in the 007 role here.
Like one of Moore’s movies, this one is set around the KGB, but unlike Moore, Dalton gave the character a ferocious edge — which was fitting as the character was headed into the 1990s.
Must-see: “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997)
Pierce Brosnan and Michelle Yeoh in “Tomorrow Never Dies.”
YouTube
Moving to the Pierce Brosnan era (Dalton only stuck around for two movies), Bond is more dashing, the Bond girls are ravishing (hi, Michelle Yeoh!), and the action is hitting Hollywood-blockbuster level with lots of explosions of gun fire.
Must-see: “Die Another Day” (2002)
Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry in “Die Another Day.”
20th Century Fox
This movie marks Bond’s 40th anniversary and arguably the best one in the Brosnan era.
Entering the 2000s, the franchise, like all blockbusters, is using more CGI. But there’s still a grounded action feel in this one as Bond battles it out in North Korea with Halle Berry as the Bond girl.
Must-see: “Casino Royale” (2006)
Daniel Craig in “Casino Royale.”
Sony Pictures Releasing
Four years after “Die Another Day,” the franchise gets a reboot and a new Bond. Daniel Craig joins the party and introduces the most serious 007 yet.
Must-see: “Skyfall” (2012)
Daniel Craig in “Skyfall.”
MGM Studios
Craig finds his groove in this movie, which, for us, is in the top five of the best Bond movies of all time.
Directed by Sam Mendes, starring Javier Bardem in the villain role, and shot beautifully by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, the movie has a real high-stakes feel by the end (if you’ve never seen the movie we won’t give away why).
Must-see: “No Time to Die” (2021)
Daniel Craig in “No Time to Die” ...

Bitcoin (BTC) miners are now selling off fewer of the coins they mine compared to last month, signaling a more optimistic outlook on the future among some of the network’s most important players.
The finding that miners are selling less bitcoin was shared in Glassnode’s latest The Week Onchain report, where the crypto analytics firm said that the 30-day change in miner wallets shows that 50% fewer coins are now being sold by miners compared to in early September.
Source: Glassnode
Digging further into the data, however, Glassnode found that a “great majority” of the selling by miners was linked to miners associated with the major mining pool Poolin.
Poolin was until recently one of the largest Bitcoin mining pools, accounting for 12% of the hashrate at the start of September. However, its hashrate started plummeting shortly after, when the mining pool admitted that it was experiencing “liquidity problems due to recent increasing demands on withdrawals.”
Today, Poolin accounts for only 3.7% of the Bitcoin network’s hashpower, Glassnode’s data showed.
The net position change by miners is seen as a key on-chain metric to watch for Bitcoin investors, given that it gives a clue about the conviction of some of the most heavily invested market participants. However, selling by miners has also been seen as necessary before a new bull run can begin, and many traders have patiently waited for a so-called ‘miner capitulation’ to happen.
“Notably stable” bitcoin price
Commenting on the state of the bitcoin market more broadly, Glassnode said in its report that the price has remained “notably stable” in the face of a challenging macroeconomic environment.
“Such quiet periods are very uncommon for Bitcoin, with semblance to both pre-crash November 2018, but equally to pre-rally March 2019,” the report said.

WASHINGTON, Oct 5 (Reuters) – A group of Democratic lawmakers wants the U.S. Commerce Department to take additional steps to ensure semiconductor companies do not use government subsidies to conduct stock buybacks.
In August, President Joe Biden signed legislation providing $52 billion in government funding to boost semiconductor manufacturing and research and a 25% investment tax credit for chip plants estimated to be worth $24 billion.
“Without strict controls, we are concerned that CHIPS funding may result in a subsidy for additional buybacks, enriching executives and stockholders at taxpayers’ expense while undermining the goals of the legislation,” said the letter signed by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin and Representatives Sean Casten, Jamaal Bowman, Pramila Jayapal

and Bill Foster.
Commerce has said it will “give preference in awards to companies who commit to make future investments that grow the domestic semiconductor industry … and not engage in stock buybacks.”
The letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo notes the largest U.S. semiconductor companies have spent hundreds of billions on stock buybacks in recent years, with Intel (INTC.O) spending over $100 billion on buybacks since 2005.
Commerce hopes to begin seeking applications by February for $39 billion in semiconductor chips subsidies to build new facilities and expand existing U.S. production.
Commerce, which confirmed it received the letter, has said chips companies awards will be “no larger than is necessary to ensure the project happens here in the United States” and will discourage “race-to-the-bottom subsidy competitions between states and localities.”
Chipmaker Micron Technology (MU.O) said Tuesday it planned to invest up to $100 billion over the next 20-plus years to build a computer chip factory complex in upstate New York.
The lawmakers expect Commerce “to announce additional protections and to refine its existing guidance over the coming weeks and months” and ask if Commerce will require companies to attest on applications for chips funding “that they will not engage in buybacks for a set period of time.”

Police Promise To Visit All Home Burglaries Under New National Policy – Chronicle Live https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/police-promise-to-visit-all-home-burglaries-under-new-national-policy-chronicle-live/
Police forces are pledging to send officers to all home burglaries under a new policy.
The National Police Chiefs’ council says chief constables will work to bring in the new approach “as soon as practically possible”.
Both Northumbria Police and Durham Police have some work to do to reach the 100% target.
A Freedom of Information request obtained by the Telegraph earlier this year found Northumbria Police attended just 35% of home burglaries in 2021. Durham Constabulary fared better, at 59.5%, but still some way off 100%.

The best performing force for burglary visits was South Yorkshire Police, at 96%. Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness has pledged to tackle burglary in her ‘Fighting Crime’ plan.
The National Police Chiefs Council said a review by the College of Policing showed victims were much more satisfied and helpful with the investigation and future crime prevention after officers made the effort to visit their home.
The organisation’s chairman, Martin Hewitt, said: “The number of burglaries is at an all-time low – down 51% over the past decade due to increased investment by police and partners in preventing them happening in the first place.
“Wherever you live in England and Wales you can be confident the police will attend if you experience the invasion of a home burglary. This should see more burglaries solved and more offenders prosecuted.”
The NPCC said Home Secretary Suella Braverman had been informed of the new standards on September 30.

PROVIDENCE — When Republican candidate for governor Ashley Kalus describes herself as a “fighter,” she is not over-stating her response to the $15,000 fine that county officials in Florida slapped on one of her companies for violating local vacation rental rules.
The legal fight that Kalus and her husband, Jeffrey Weinzweig, launched in the spring of 2018 went on for more than three-and-a-half years, with Kalus alleging “retaliation” by county officials because she questioned their rules.
The fight began with a February 2018 investigation of an online ad for what, county officials deemed, was an attempt to illegally rent one of her Key West homes.
It ended on Nov. 1, 2021 with a settlement requiring Kalus’ company to pay the county a reduced $5,000 fine, little more than two months before Kalus registered as a Rhode Island voter for the first time, on the way to announcing her GOP bid for R.I. governor.
Why should a Rhode Island voter care about this legal tug of war over a house on Summerland Key, Fla.?
Here’s one possible reason:
The tangled tale shines a light on Kalus’ life before she arrived on the Rhode Island political stage this past spring with a voter registration in Florida, and a tax break reserved for residents on her Illinois home.
Here’s another:
The court file contains allegations that Kalus and her husband Jeffrey Weinzweig knew the county’s vacation rental restrictions when they purchased 885 E. Shore Drive, Summerland Key in 2015 – and flouted them.
Instead of following the rules, the lawyers for Monroe County alleged in a court filing that Kalus “decided to engage in illegal vacation rentals of the subject property with the intention of not getting caught.”
According to the filing, her company – Sirena Key LLC – “filed the action only after choosing to engage in illegal vacation rentals of the subject property and getting caught.”
A Kalus spokesman told The Journal: ‘The allegation is absurd.’
“Ashley and Jeff have always followed the law, and the claim was made by the county in retaliation for Ashley highlighting injustices being perpetrated by the government against working people in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma,” said spokesman Matt Hanrahan.
But the Democratic Governors Association suggests:
“Ashley Kalus’ repeated, blatant disregard for the law shows Rhode Islanders exactly who she is: someone who puts her own self interests ahead of standards and ethics,” said DGA spokeswoman Christina Amestoy.
What was at stake?
“Monroe County faces a critical affordable and workforce housing shortage, and the further conversion of available local housing into vacation rentals will substantially and adversely impact this shortage,” the county argued in a court filing.
Beyond that, “there are a number of problems attendant with vacation rental use including increased noise and traffic impacts, and Monroe County’s zoning and vacation rental use regulations … [mitigate] these impacts,” county officials argued.
Sound familiar?
The concerns raised by Monroe County, Fla. officials echo those raised by locals in Rhode Island.
Providence, in 2019, limited many short-term rentals to owner-occupied units. Newport this year banned short-term rentals in areas zoned residential. Warwick.is the latest city to contemplate banning all but owner-occupied short-term rentals
County fines for violation of rental rules
This Florida story begins in 2015 when county officials came across rental postings for the Weinzweigs’ recently purchased house on Summerland Key on Vrbo and HomeAway.
The property was owned by Sirena Key LLC, which at that time was listed by both Kalus and her husband as principals.
They were not fined that first time, after deleting the advertisements, according to the Code Compliance case file.
In February 2018, county officials conducted another vacation rental inspection.
The upshot: the county fined Sirena Key LLC for violating local vacation rental rules by advertising their house at 855 E. Shore Drive, Summerland Key for rent for fewer than 28 days. The fine: $15,000.
Kalus accused the county officials of “retaliation.”
It went like this, according to comments in the “Code Compliance” file compiled by inspector Francie Boellard, who retired last year.
March 20, 2018: “Ashley called me. Wanted to know more about the case as she is the one [who] placed the advertisement & thought she had removed all her advertisements.”
She “wanted to know when the the case was created. I gave her the date…[and] she said there is a law about retaliation.
“I told her I had no idea what she was referring to. [She] said she called county administrator’s office on 3/15 to find out about vacation rental law in legislature to see if the law changed & property owners can do what they want with their homes.
“Feels since she called the administrators office, I opened a case against her.”
“She asked if there was a way to resolve this without going to a hearing. I discussed a stipulated agreement. She said she would get back to me,”
That same day, “Dr. Weinzweig called to say they can’t come to a hearing. Felt they complied & the case should be closed…”
“I explained the process…He said I am squeezing him to come to a meeting & the case should be closed. Then stated the advertisement was not theirs….[The house still] has $1 million in damages [from Hurricane Irma].
“He called back wanting a copy of the file… Stated that he is a highly skilled plastic surgeon & just can’t fly in for a meeting. Wants the case to be closed as there is no way he can be renting if he sustained a million dollars worth of damage.”
In another call that same March day, “Dr. Weinzweig left message on my [voice] mail stating it was ludicrous I would ask for photos from them with damages from IRMA.”
A special magistrate conducted a hearing on April 26, 2018, rejected the Weinzweigs’ arguments and fined them $15,000.
On Sept. 21, 2018, Sirena Key LLC – the company created by Ashley and Jeffrey Weinzweig, that by this time named Kalus alone as an officer – filed suit in the Circuit Court of the 16th Judicial Circuit for Monroe County.
Among their arguments: State law “pre-empts municipalities and counties from regulating vacation rentals,” with limited exceptions.
And to the extent regulation is allowed, they argued: the county exceeded its authority by imposing “prohibitions against advertising vacation rentals…as opposed to solely and exclusively prohibiting vacation rentals or regulating the frequency or duration of vacation rentals.”
Circuit Court Judge Luis Garcia rejected two of their three arguments for a summary judgment.
A third was in limbo when the two sides reached an agreement on Nov. 1, 2021.
The county agreed to reduce the $15,000 fine to $5,000 and Kalus’ company – Sirena Key LLC – agreed not to rent or advertise the property for rent for less than 28 days, without a special vacation rental permit.
How does Kalus explain what happened?
“She listed the property on a travel website as a draft. Unbeknownst to her, the posting went live, but by that point, Hurricane Irma had hit, and the property was not in a livable condition,” Hanrahan said.
Another problem: “The text of the listing stated that the property could not be rented for less than 28 days, in accordance with county regulations, but due to a glitch on the site, people were able to try to book for less time.”
But “no request for less than 28 days has ever been accepted at the property.”
Retaliation? For what?
“Following Hurricane Irma, Ashley was a very vocal, public critic of the county commissioners because the county was charging permit fees on insurance settlements for hurricane victims,” Hanrahan said.
“Ashley’s concern was that individuals could not afford the county fees for rebuilding as the insurance money could only be used for repairs,” Hanrahan said.
She believed “what the county was doing was immoral, and it hurt working people in trailers the most.”
“Only after she brought concerns to the county did they cite her with a technical violation for the rental – hence it was very clearly retaliation for her making light of the county’s immoral acts,” he said.
How Technology Is Helping Truck Drivers IoT Business News
How Technology Is Helping Truck Drivers – IoT Business News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-technology-is-helping-truck-drivers-iot-business-news/
Introduction
The heavy transportation and trucking industry walk a fine balance to not only maintain client relations but profit. Often this fine line can be tricky at best to navigate successfully, fortunately, the adoption of specific technologies is helping business owners and their employees find success in a stressful industry.
Real-Time Location Tracking
In 2021, there were over 21,000 supply chain disruptions globally which placed a massive amount of stress on logistics companies in general, let alone trucking companies, and sadly resulted in some of them folding. Being able to see potential disruptions then has become a priority for the industry. One overlooked technology that has enabled this is real-time location tracking.
This is done by providing fleet managers the ability to see where each truck is at any given time. This information can then be used to provide customers with real-time updates so all parties involved can make better near-term decisions an asset for any CDL job. For those about to enter a truck driver job, the technology will help plan better routes and driver behaviors that will help them succeed in their new profession.
Predictive Maintenance
With the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) the trucking industry now can better predict when vehicles need maintenance to avoid costly breakdowns. IoT sensors in the vehicle can provide information to fleet managers. The collected data can then be combined with predictive AI algorithms to generate predictive models and set up better maintenance routines.
This can be leveraged to better use a mechanic’s time and with trucking forecasts for 2022 not inspiring confidence and further staffing shortages expected, your staff’s time and how it’s used is more important than ever. It also almost goes without saying that preventing costly breakdowns has an incredibly positive effect on the bottom line.
Driver Safety Monitoring
The current workforce shortages alluded to above, and the forecasts that predict it’s only going to get worse, are a crisis for the trucking industry waiting to happen. Any leveraging of technology to improve personnel safety and work conditions can then be seen as mission critical. Again, IoT sensors can provide important information that can be used to improve driver security and behavior for the better.
Typical information that can be provided to fleet managers comprises instances of harsh braking, taking corners too quickly, and speeding. Curbing these behaviors is not only important for driver safety but also for the load being delivered. Over the years, ignition locks relying on a successful breathalyzer test and an onboard camera to check safety measures like seatbelts are adhered to have all been proven in preventing accidents and more importantly fatal accidents. In the coming years, AI will better refine these technologies.
Conclusion
To overcome both the current and future challenges facing the trucking industry, advanced technologies will need to be adopted. These technologies can be leveraged to improve all facets of the business, from keeping staff and loads safe to the continued efficient use of the fleet. Ultimately, these technologies will keep companies competitive in a crowded market. While technology often requires a significant capital outlay in the three instances listed above, that outlay will provide a return on investment and improve the overall profitability of the company. In this sense, IoT tech and future AI improvements are an investment rather than an expense.
HEALTHY LIVING: How To Improve Bone Health NWAOnline
HEALTHY LIVING: How To Improve Bone Health – NWAOnline https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/healthy-living-how-to-improve-bone-health-nwaonline/
We try to build muscle and cut fat when we work out, but we often don’t think about our bone health. It’s often forgotten that bones, like muscles, can be strengthened with proper diet and exercise.
Typically, bones grow and get stronger until you reach your late 20s. But by 40, bones may start to deteriorate slowly. If bones weaken too quickly, you could develop osteoporosis. According to the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation, 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, and 44 million people have low bone density.
Half of adults 50 and older are at risk for breaking a bone because of falling or something as simple as bumping into their furniture. It’s so common that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men will break a bone in their lifetimes – making it more likely than a heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined for women.
Osteoporosis-caused fractures can be a life-altering event because it affects mobility. Some hip fracture patients are unable to walk unassisted for six months after a fracture, others have had to move to assisted living facilities and about half don’t regain their previous function.
Risk factors
Many factors can weaken bones. Here are things to avoid if you wish to sustain strong bones.
• Alcohol – Daily consumption of two to three ounces of alcohol can make you more prone to bone loss. Alcohol also increases the chance of falling – increasing the risk of fractures.
• Medications – Some medications can contribute to bone loss. Ask your primary care provider what options are best for you. The providers at Siloam Springs Internal Medicine are accepting new patients. To schedule an appointment online, visit NW-Physicians.com today.
• Smoking – Not only is smoking bad for your heart and lungs, but it can also impede your body’s ability to absorb calcium from your diet.
Solutions
Fortunately, there are numerous ways you can keep your bones strong such as:
• Your Diet – Bones need calcium and vitamin D to get and stay strong. Numerous studies have linked low calcium intake with low bone mass, rapid bone loss and high fracture rates. Vitamin D plays a vital role in helping the body absorb calcium. While milk is rich in calcium and vitamin D, you can also get calcium from almonds, cereal, orange juice, bread, yogurt, cheese, egg yolks, liver and saltwater fish. Dark leafy greens like kale, spinach and bok choy are also good sources of these nutrients.
• Weight-Bearing Exercises – Both bones and muscles become stronger with exercise. However, while muscles might grow from low-impact workouts like swimming, biking and elliptical machines, bones benefit from weight-bearing activities such as climbing stairs, jogging, jump rope, walking and weight training.
• Enjoy the Sunshine – Your body can make vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Your body can manufacture all the vitamin D you need if you spend about 30 to 45 minutes each week in the sun. While it’s true that drinking milk is an excellent way to build stronger bones, it’s not the only way to protect yourself from osteoporosis.

Richard Sanders is one of just four permanent residents at the Othona Community
By Laurence Cawley
BBC News, East
At the eastern edge of England, where the River Blackwater meets the North Sea, a small community whose size oscillates with the seasons lives without any connection to the National Grid.
The Othona Community at Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex has just four permanent residents, including wardens Richard Sanders and his wife, Debbie.
Mr Sanders describes the 20-acre (8-hectare) Othona site as a “Christian community that is open to all faiths and none”.
“We have a mixture of people who have been coming since the ’50s or ’60s and people coming along for the first time,” he said.
“The ethos is worship, study and play, and people here get to meet others that they might not normally come across.”
Image caption,
As a location off both the electricity and gas grids, the Othona Community is in a tiny minority
During the busier summer months, the retreat can have up to 60 people living there.
As a location off both the electricity and gas grids, the Othona Community is in a tiny minority.
Figures from the energy regulator Ofgem suggest the number of fully off-grid households across the UK could be between just 500 and 2,000.
So how is Othona powered?

“We’re right on the edge of nowhere,” Mr Sanders said.
“So we’ve just developed from a place with no electricity, to a place with some generators, to a place with a wind turbine and solar panels.
“We’ve always been a place where people have to think about their use of resources. In the earlier days we used to have to tell people not to use two hairdryers at once or it would collapse the system.
“My feeling is that going on the grid would kill this being the sort of place where you think about energy rather than take it for granted.
“Being off-grid is an opportunity for people to think about alternatives and the fact that there are alternatives.”
Image caption,
There remains one hair dryer at the community – a quirky reminder that not long ago two hairdryers in use at the same time would collapse the retreat’s electrical system
The vast, commercial-style kitchen now runs on electricity rather than gas.
Not having to pay the current price of gas is a relief to Mr Sanders.
“I wouldn’t like to be paying the kinds of prices there are for gas now for the amount we use,” he said.
“I mean, we still use the diesel [for the back-up generator] and that’s gone up, but not as much as the gas.
“Even the price of the wood pellets that we use for the boiler have gone up – I suspect because people are using that if they can as an alternative to gas.”
The centre is hoping to add a second wind turbine capable of 25kw in the near future, meaning they can do away with the back-up generator altogether.
And while the centre is connected to the water mains, it also has its own sewage system dating back to the 1980s in which fluid waste is filtered through reed beds and into a pond, which doubles as the centre’s fire hydrant [solid waste is taken away by tanker].
Image caption,
The half-tonne (79-stone) hot water tank at the centre gets heated with wood pellets
The centre also has a small orchard and a group of hens that lays a handful of eggs daily.
“People enjoy what is grown on site – so tomatoes and cucumbers in the summer, and we’ve got a lot of squashes at the moment and a few varieties of potato.
“There was, in the 1970s, an attempt to become fully self-sufficient and they had cows, more chickens and a pig and ploughed the fields, but it turned out people were spending more time looking after animals than looking after people, and primarily we are about looking after people.”
Image caption,
Dr John Packman and his wife Caroline did not originally plan to self-build an eco home
About 90 miles (145km) north of Bradwell-on-Sea, Dr John Packman and his wife Caroline live in their self-built home near Southwold in Suffolk.
The couple did not set out to self-build an eco home. Rather, their hands were forced by circumstance – in this case, buying a house so rotten and damaged it proved to be unsalvageable.
“What I’ve learned from building something new and from scratch is that the fundamentals are so simple, really,” said Dr Packman.
“The key thing is orienting the house with the sun,” he said. “We’ve got a big roof on the south side and it is glazed on the south side with a big overhang which helps keep us cool in the summer, but on a winter’s day, when the sun is low, you can get up to 20C (68F) because of the solar gain.”
Image caption,
Both Dr Packman and Stephen West use a Tesla Powerwall to manage the storage of their solar-powered electricity
On the roof of the Packman home are 20 solar panels which, rather than being placed on top of the roof, were installed instead of tiles. Together they produce 4kw of power and feed into a Tesla battery system which, when it senses a coming storm, can fill up on energy from the grid if needed.
The couple live in an area overseen by UK Power Networks, which covers London, the East and South East. The energy operator said about 150,000 of its household customers (less than 2% of the total) fed electricity back into the grid, primarily from solar panels.
Dr Packman said new builds made it much easier to be more self-sufficient.
The floor of the couple’s timber-framed home has been insulated with specially treated recycled paper and the water is heated using an air source heat pump.
The toilets of their home are flushed using rainwater harvested from the roof.
“Doing stuff with the existing housing stock is difficult,” said Dr Packman. “It is expensive and difficult and needs government initiatives and support.”
Image caption,
Peter Chisnall, a trustee of environmental charity En-form, said people were wasteful when it came to energy
Demand for photovoltaic (PV) panels is rampant, according to Peter Chisnall, a trustee at the Colchester environmental charity En-form.
Suffolk County Council is just one of the local authorities that runs a Solar Together scheme, which buys solar panels in bulk for interested residents.
“They announced the latest round recently and they had about 7,000 people register, which is phenomenal,” Mr Chisnall said. “People are thinking about this now.”
And yet, he said, perhaps the first step towards greater self-sufficiency is not putting up solar panels or harnessing the power of the wind, but simply using less energy in the first place.
Image caption,
Mr Chisnall said although worthwhile, making existing homes more energy efficient could prove costly and disruptive
“The one good thing about the cost of living crisis, perhaps, is that it is making us think about our energy use,” said Mr Chisnall, whose home has a 4kw PV system that has generated about 30,000kwh of energy in the past 10 years. “We are very profligate.
“If you think of your energy bills, 80% of what you pay usually is on heating and the other 20% is your lights, your gadgets and all of those other things.
“If you want to reduce that as much as you can then you want to look at super insulating your house, reducing thermal bridges and making it as airtight as possible.”
An advocate for Passive House standards, which result in ultra-low energy buildings, Mr Chisnall said making existing homes more energy efficient could prove costly and disruptive.
For a typical three bedroom semi-detached home, he said, the cost of adding various energy saving measures could cost £25,000 – £30,000. There are various grants available, however, to help meet those costs.
“Ideally it should be a whole-house retrofit, even if staged over several years,” he said. “But even if some of the measures can be installed it will help.”
Image caption,
Stephen West’s 1980s home in Hethersett, Norfolk, has solar panels but he is still reliant on gas
Stephen West’s 1980s home in Hethersett, Norfolk, is an example of the type of successful retrofit Mr Chisnall mentions.
He installed two sets of solar panels seven years ago and, in 2019, connected the panels to a Tesla Powerwall – a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
“It was about not spending as much money as well as not using as much power from the grid,” he said. “This last year they have paid for themselves, so from now until 2035 it is all profit and that profit increases depending on energy prices.”
He has had low-emission windows installed, super-insulated wherever possible, replaced the gas oven with an electric one and bought an electric car. He had wanted an air source heat pump but was told his radiators were too small to work in his home.
“It is the practicalities of it because the house is just not designed for it,” he said. “I would love to get off gas. There are systems I could use, but I can’t fit them in.”
Image caption,
Mr West can monitor the energy production and use within his home via mobile devices
The solar panels have saved Mr West about £12,500 during the last seven years.
However, he still faces an increase in energy costs. The cost of gas is about to rise from 7p to 10p per kilowatt hour (kWh).
And he continues to pay the electricity standing charge despite the fact that during the brighter months he is not using any electricity from the grid.
“I would love to start again with a Passive House, I would love to do that.”

Crypto News Today The Fastest Growing Crypto Coins On The Market TodayFantom And Big Eyes Coin? NewsWatch
Crypto News Today – The Fastest Growing Crypto Coins On The Market Today,Fantom, And Big Eyes Coin? – NewsWatch https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-today-the-fastest-growing-crypto-coins-on-the-market-todayfantom-and-big-eyes-coin-newswatch/
The coin market is renowned for the various options that it offers to traders. At any point, traders will have access to thousands of crypto coins. Each of these coins has a different architecture and use case. As a result, they’ll behave differently. That’s why you’ll find the price of some rising faster than others. If you’re a trader interested in making plenty of quick gains for himself, you may buy one of the fastest-growing projects on the market. These projects will fill your bags quickly with profits.
So, what are the fastest-growing projects in the coin market? Keep reading to find out. We’ll look at Fantom, and Big Eyes Coin (BIG) for this piece.
This Is No Apparition – Fantom
As an Ethereum killer, Fantom is expected to be in most crypto discussions worldwide. More people are getting on the Fantom project because they believe it has more intriguing features than other decentralized protocols. As a decentralized protocol, Fandom was designed with the capacity to host decentralized applications. It will support these applications with smart contracts.
Because it runs on a proof-of-stake protocol, Fantom can operate flexibly and support transactions seamlessly. Currently, Fantom can support thousands of transactions per second. It can provide seamless transaction finality, and all its transactions are charged at low cost. FTM is the token used to pay transaction fees on this network. All the projects developed on Fantom’s network will enjoy this blockchain’s features.
Fantom can process transactions quickly due to a directed acyclic graph and a leaderless consensus. The acyclic graph stores transaction history and maintains a sequence of events. It ensures that all transactions are processed smoothly – one after the other. Furthermore, the leaderless mechanism is an impressive innovation that ensure the blockchain will keep functioning even if there is a glitch. The platform will therefore keep working even during days when other blockchains may be experiencing difficulty. These features have encouraged traders to keep purchasing Fantom, and if this continues, it will remain a fast-riser with plenty of hype.
Cat Got The Cream – Big Eyes Coin (BIG)
No doubt, Big Eyes has been rising quickly in the coin market. As more attention is given to this meme coin, we can only expect it to keep doing well for itself. While certain experts have referred to Big Eyes as a meme coin that only has hype, the development team for this project strongly begs to differ. They have designed a cryptocurrency that will transfer wealth from the world of cryptocurrencies to users. Early reports indicate that they’re not bluffing.
Big Eyes is designed to adopt a community-first approach. This means that the project will prioritize its users. As it stands, users will also be able to contribute to changes and developments on the cryptocurrency. By selling 90% of its tokens during the presale, Big Eyes has kept to its promise. Biden Says U.S. Willing To Continue Talks With S.Korea On EV Subsidy – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/biden-says-u-s-willing-to-continue-talks-with-s-korea-on-ev-subsidy-reuters/
SEOUL, Oct 5 (Reuters) – President Joe Biden has expressed willingness to continue talks with South Korea over recent U.S. legislation that denies subsidies to most foreign makers of electric vehicles (EVs), an official from Yoon’s office said on Wednesday.
Biden gave the assurance in a letter to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who had asked the U.S. president last month for help to allay Seoul’s concerns that the new U.S. rules would hurt South Korea’s automakers. read more
“We assess that President Biden reaffirmed his understanding of our concerns through a personally signed letter …. it shows Biden’s willingness to be considerate towards South Korean companies in the future,” the official said.
The Inflation Reduction Act, signed by Biden in August, requires EVs assembled in North America to qualify for tax credits in the United States, but excluded Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) and its affiliate Kia Corp (000270.KS) from EV subsidies, as they do not yet make the vehicles there.
As a result, only about 20 EVs qualify for subsidies under the new rules, among them models from Ford Motor Co and BMW (BMWG.DE). read more

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct 5, 2022–
SpineX, Inc., a clinical stage medtech company today announced the groundbreaking results its first in human study in children with cerebral palsy. The study is published in the esteemed medical journal Nature Communications demonstrating unparalleled functional improvements with its proprietary non-surgical treatment SCiP TM ( S pinal C ord I nnovation in P ediatrics) in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). “A pilot study combining noninvasive spinal neuromodulation and activity-based neurorehabilitation therapy in children with cerebral palsy”, led by Dr. Susan Hastings, PT, DPT and Dr. V Reggie Edgerton, PhD is the result of years of work championed by the two stalwarts of their respective fields. This study discusses how delivering non-invasive spinal neuromodulation, using SCiP TM, during Physical Therapy improved voluntary sensorimotor function in 16 out of 16 children over a wide range of ages and severities of CP. SpineX was awarded the Breakthrough Device Designation (BDD) from US FDA for SCiP and the proposed treatment of CP. In addition, SpineX has engaged with FDA to gain alignment on a proposed clinical trial to be conducted in 2023; the results of which are anticipated to lead to FDA clearance of the SCiP TM device for the treatment of CP.

CP is severely debilitating with no current cure. Over 10,000 new cases are diagnosed each year where CP is the result of damage to the developing brain and describes a group of movement disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. To date there are no methods or medications to prevent or treat CP. Often children with CP are left to be treated with invasive surgeries that attempt to decrease spasticity, a common symptom of the disease.
SCiP TM is a non-invasive spinal electrical neuromodulation device which provides transcutaneous spinal cord neuro-stimulation to potentially treat the underlying neurological dysfunction in pediatric patients with CP. SCiP TM aims to be the first medical device in the U.S. to treat CP by transforming the brain and spinal cord dysfunctional connectivity into highly functional systems.
“At just three years old and highly affected by CP, our son has shown such exciting progress since he began usingSCiP,” said Dana, the mother of a young boy diagnosed with CP who was enrolled in a clinical study sponsored by SpineX. “We’re so grateful that our son was included in the clinical study with SCiP TMas it has opened up a world of possibilities for our son, and we hope others will be able to witness it soon.”
Spinal Neuromodulation is being developed as a platform technology by SpineX and SCiP TM represents their second Breakthrough Device Designation following the SCONE TM device which is in clinical trials for the treatment of Neurogenic Bladder.

Hold DCAD directors accountable
I’ve been following the long-term fiasco of the Denton Central Appraisal District’s Board of Directors’ inadequacy, or unwillingness, to deal with the long-overdue firing of former Chief Appraiser McClure for her consistent inability to perform her duties in a timely and professional manner. It took the board three long years of her … denying taxpayers their rights for them to come to grips, resulting in the taxing entities rejecting their budget. Then to add insult to injury, only two weeks later, the Board of Directors replaced her with a deputy chief appraiser who McClure herself hired, without so much as conducting an open search for any other qualified candidates!

Challenges At Inn: Former Owner Favors Assistance For Village Business Evening Observer
‘Challenges’ At Inn: Former Owner Favors Assistance For Village Business – Evening Observer https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/challenges-at-inn-former-owner-favors-assistance-for-village-business-evening-observer/
OBSERVER Photos by Gregory Bacon Developers at the White Inn are aiming for additional assistance.
The former owner of The White Inn believes more should be done by local leaders to make business easier locally.
During the recent Chautauqua County Legislature meeting, a public hearing was held about the county applying for a RESTORE NY grant for The White Inn.
The White Inn has been closed for the last four years and needs about $3.9 million worth of repairs. Local developers Steve St. George and Devin Jones have purchased the facility and are moving ahead with plans to restore it. Chautauqua County is offering assistance through tax incentives through the county Industrial Development Agency and also by applying for a grant on behalf of The White Inn.
One of the requirements of the grant application is a public hearing must take place.
During the public hearing, Robert Contiguglia of Fredonia spoke out. He owned The White Inn for 15 years, selling it in 2008.
Robert Contiguglia owned The White Inn from 1993-2008. He believes county leaders need to help out existing businesses, not just closed ones.
While not outright opposing the application, he questioned the concept of the county applying for a grant on behalf of a private business. “The White Inn is considered the jewel of Fredonia, but it’s really just a private business — a business that competes with other businesses,” he said.
Contiguglia agreed that a renovated White Inn will attract businesses, but he believes it will also take business away from other establishments. “Every re-entrant takes a little piece from the existing businesses,” he said.
Contiguglia said understands the need for competition, but added, “the competition should be on an equal playing field, not a playing field where one business gets a lot of help and other businesses get no help,” he said.
He reviewed the requirements for the grant and noted that 15 years ago when he sold it, he would not have been eligible, even though he needed financial assistance. “The White Inn was not on the verge of falling apart because I spent a lot of money maintaining it. I was not creating jobs; I was merely retaining jobs — jobs that went away after I sold the property, because I was facing financial challenges myself,” he said.
He noted that had he received financial assistance back in 2008, it would have been a lot less than what is needed today. Therein lies the rub. “It’s fine to pay attention to projects that need specific grant criteria, but the county needs to continue to protect and promote all existing businesses, not just those deemed worthy of assistance by the powers that be. If so, then maybe there can be a lot of winners and the playing field can be a little bit more level,” he said.
Legislator Bob Scudder, R-Fredonia, said as someone who has owned multiple businesses he understands Contiguglia’s point, but noted that there’s not grant money for what he’s talking about.
Scudder continued to voice support for grant funds for The White Inn. “The White Inn is known far and wide. … Restoring The White Inn is good for Fredonia, good for SUNY Fredonia, good for Chautauqua County and good for all of Western New York,” he said.
He believes restoring The White Inn may be a catalyst to revitalize the village of Fredonia. “The entire region will be better with a restored and open for business White Inn,” he said.
Legislator Susan Parker, D-Fredonia, agreed. “The White Inn operated continuously for close to 100 years as a hotel and restaurant. … Everyone has a story of the White Inn,” she said.
She noted RESTORE NY is designed for private businesses that help a community. “The program encourages community development and neighborhood growth through the elimination and redevelopment of blighted structures,” she said.
After the meeting, Legislature Chairman Pierre Chagnon said now that the public hearing has taken place, the county IDA will move ahead and apply for the grant.

Chestnut Commons Includes One-Stop Shop Community Center for Recreation, Youth and Adult Education, Workforce Development, Kitchen Incubator and Human Services
Passive House Development with Solar Panels and Rooftop Garden
Largest Public Site Designated through East New York Rezoning Responds to Priorities Identified by the Community
Today New York City Department of Housing Preservation (HPD), Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Department of City Planning (DCP), MHANY Management (MHANY), Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC), and Urban Builders Collaborative opened the doors to 275 permanently affordable homes at Chestnut Commons Apartments. This unique mixed-use development is affordable to households with incomes between 20% and 80% of Area Median Income (AMI), including 55 for formerly homeless New Yorkers. All homes are permanently affordable.
Chestnut Commons includes a mix of studios, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments. On the ground floor, a new Cypress Hills East New York Community center offers rich, multi-layered programming by Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, CUNY Kingsborough Community College, and more. As identified in the East New York Neighborhood Plan, the project also includes affordable retail space for local small businesses.
Chestnut Commons is a model for healthy and sustainable urban living. The project is certified as a Passive House and includes solar panels and a rooftop garden that reduces energy consumption, tenants’ utility costs, and improves resident wellness. MHANY and CHLDC together with Food Print Group have not only prioritized recycling but have spearheaded an organic/composting program throughout the building including the installation of a biodigester that will compost and generate fertilizer right on site for immediate use as well as distribution to local farms and gardens.
“Chestnut Commons combines all the aspects of healthy living – with homes for the lowest-income New Yorkers and those who formerly experienced homelessness, space for the community and small businesses, and sustainability best practices,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “This project delivers on priorities for the community in East New York, including, most importantly, hundreds of affordable homes. I was proud to support this project as borough president with half a million dollars, and I am excited to see it housing our neighbors as the mayor.”
“Congratulations to the entire Chestnut Commons Team for bringing this exemplary project to East New York. Alongside the critically needed housing that will give hundreds of New Yorkers a safe, affordable place to call home, Chestnut Commons offers the programming, amenities and climate conscious features that are the future of live, work communities. The East New York neighborhood plan continues to deliver on its promises as part of our efforts to advance a New York City that allows everyone to thrive in our city,” said Chief Housing Officer Jessica Katz.
“Today marks a significant milestone in fulfilling the commitments we made in the East New York neighborhood plan. The development team, including locally-based non-profit organizations with deep ties to the community, has brought to life a dynamic project with a wide array of community services, culturally-rich programming and hundreds of deeply affordable homes that will benefit local residents for generations,” said HPD Commissioner Adolfo Carrión Jr. “I thank and congratulate MHANY, Cypress Hills, and all of our partners for breathing new life into this previously vacant site and provide lasting affordability for the neighborhood.”
“With 275 permanently affordable and sustainably designed homes, Chestnut Commons will benefit the East New York community for generations,” said HDC President Eric Enderlin. “Residents will also benefit from the dynamic program offerings of the Cypress Hills East New York Community Center, in addition to extensive onsite supportive services. Congratulations and thank you to all our partners and elected officials who made this incredible project possible.”
“New Yorkers need affordable housing and access to higher education to move ahead on the path to upward mobility,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “That’s why I’m proud that this newest mix-use development in Brooklyn will feature a satellite campus for Kingsborough Community College so that residents can take introductory college classes and other training that may be critical to their workplace success. We need more of these types of partnerships and I’m thankful to Mayor Adams and other city leaders involved in making Chestnut Commons a reality for giving New Yorkers the support they need to thrive.”
“Chestnut Commons is a perfect example of how saying yes to good planning and the creation of new housing leads to great results. With hundreds of new affordable homes and affordable retail space made possible by the East New York rezoning – this graceful energy-efficient building shows how equity, economic opportunity, and sustainability work hand in glove to create a bright future for New Yorkers,” said DCP Director Dan Garodnick.
The new 34,000 square-foot Cypress Hills East New York Community Center, operated by CHLDC, features a computer lab, gym and fitness studio, and a commercial kitchen that will serve as an incubator for culinary businesses in the neighborhood. The community center features a range of partners that provides programs for local residents:
Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, operator of the Community Center, provides workforce development, public benefits enrollment, college success and youth and family services. CHLDC will also provide active recreation programs and use the kitchen incubator to provide industrial kitchen facilities and small business technical assistance to help launch and sustain neighborhood-based caterers, home-based food businesses, food manufacturers, and restaurant entrepreneurs.
CUNY Kingsborough Community College is establishing a satellite campus in the center that offers college introductory courses and career track certification training programs. HousingPlus provides community-based housing and comprehensive services to women to support them in overcoming poverty, homelessness, addiction, trauma, and the effects of incarceration and help them build lives of stability for themselves and their families.
Housing Plus will provide services to 55 formerly homeless households at Chestnut Commons while also welcoming the Chestnut Commons community.
Menotti Enterprises, a safety consulting company, offers trainings and certifications for local residents interested in working in the construction industry.
Per Scholas, a non-profit focused on advancing economic equity through tech careers, offers IT workforce trainings.
Brooklyn Conservatory of Music offers music instruction to youth in the neighborhood.
Collective Fare, a Black-owned chef-collaborative, will operate a healthy food café.
Hot Bread Kitchen, a non-profit focused on creating economic opportunity through careers in food, trains women to enter the culinary sector.
Cypress Hills-East New York Coalition will be distributing emergency food to residents.
To activate the Chestnut Dinsmore Corridor and provide additional retail options to residents and the community, there are three commercial spaces on the ground floor of the building, including:
Brooklyn Federal Credit Union: In addition to traditional retail banking services, the credit union will pilot a credit building rent payment program and offer financial education and homeownership workshops.
East Brooklyn Mutual Aid (EBMA): EBMA sources low-cost groceries from predominantly Black distributors and farmers and delivers them to New Yorkers, prioritizing elderly people, disabled folks, and low-income families. EBMA also partners with Collective Fare to support those who need support with meal preparation.
The development team also dedicated significant resources to make local hiring a priority and create jobs for community residents during construction of this project. Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation ran a construction skills training and certification program for local residents, free of charge. 30 trainees were further vetted by Building Skills NY and hired by Lettire Construction and its subcontractors.
“Chestnut Commons Apartments has provided an opportunity for MHANY to positively impact East New York, the neighborhood of our origin. Chestnut Commons Apartments, jointly with CHLDC and Urban Builders Collaborative, is the culmination of a partnership with a creative design team at Dattner; open-minded public partners at HPD and HDC as we negotiated the income levels to target for families specifically in ENY; supportive local elected officials; a skilled supportive service team in Housing Plus; and a willing partner to actualize our dream in construction with Lettire,” said MHANY Management’s Executive Director, Ismene Speliotis. “All of this hard work is gratifying beyond any expectation we may have had as we watch each family walk into their new home. MHANY believes where there is a will based on deep understanding of the community within which we are building and a respect for and towards each other the outcome is not only beneficial to the occupants but a cornerstone and beacon available to and embraced by the entire community.”
“Guided by the vision and aspirations of East New York community residents, we are proud to collaborate with MHANY Management and Urban Builders Collaborative to bring Chestnut Commons to the finish line. We are all proud to provide very deeply and permanently affordable housing and...

Through 40 minutes of action, the rivalry showdown between Dunkirk and Fredonia was deadlocked at one goal apiece.
Then, Fredonia regrouped after a lengthy intermission to honor its nine seniors and righted the ship.
The Hillbillies scored three times in the second half to come away with a 4-1 victory over the Marauders on Tuesday in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West girls soccer game under the lights at SUNY Fredonia.
“Basically, the message was we didn’t have the effort,” said Fredonia head coach Dan Tomaszewski of his speech to the team after the first half. “I think it was a big moment, and we struggled with that a little bit, but we found a way to grind it out.”
One of the key forces in Fredonia’s second-half resurgence was senior captain Annie Gondek, who tallied a goal and an assist in the final 40 minutes of the victory, on her Senior Night, against rival Dunkirk.

“It’s unreal, honestly. As a freshman, I never thought I would be in this place. It’s gone by really fast,” Gondek said after the game.
A night earlier, the same two teams met in Dunkirk for the Marauders’ Senior Night. The contest was a lopsided 6-0 Fredonia victory. Tuesday’s game was far more competitive, as Dunkirk rebounded and gave Fredonia its best shot.
Dunkirk (3-8, 0-7) had the game’s first two notable scoring chances, both around the 10th minute of play. Fredonia’s senior goalkeeper Sarah Davis neutralized the early threat to give her team the chance to take the lead.
“I think we had more chances (than Fredonia) early in the game,” said Dunkirk head coach Chris Piede. “I was super proud of the girls. They brought it today. Honestly, I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Fredonia (8-4, 6-3) pulled ahead 1-0 in the 20th minute of play after a free kick by Gigi Ferro into the box connected with Sophia Gullo in traffic for the game’s first goal.

Still, Dunkirk would not go away and immediately responded with pressure of its own. Within a minute of the Fredonia goal, Dunkirk sent a bouncing ball just wide of the Fredonia net. Then, four minutes after the Fredonia goal, Lauryn McCracken pulled away from the Hillbillies defense and let off a strong shot, but Sarah Davis was there again for a stellar save.
Within the final 10 minutes of the half, Fredonia had more opportunities to score, but Dunkirk’s senior goalkeeper Tayler Skelly kept Fredonia’s lead to only one goal.
“Tayler Skelly made some amazing saves. There was one in the first half that was just riding that line,” said Piede.
As the first half neared its end, McCracken once again pulled away from the Fredonia defense, but this time she delivered. McCracken rifled a shot from distance beyond Davis and into the center of the net to tie the score at 1-1 with just less than two minutes left to play in the first half.
“They know they can play with anyone,” said Piede after the game. “They brought it today.”
But from that point on, it was all Fredonia. The Hillbillies tallied three goals in the second half — first by Ella Koopman to take the lead, next by Gondek to extend the lead to 3-1 with 10:45 left to play, then finally Gullo finished off the night with her second of the game to bookend the five total goals of the contest with two minutes left to play.
“The mentality changed,” said Gondek of the halftime adjustments. “We knew we needed to be better. We picked it up and we won.”
Dunkirk, with only one substitute for the entire contest, looked like an entirely different team in the second half after putting up arguably its best fight of the year in league play.
“We just ran out of gas. When Fredonia is rolling out three to four subs every couple minutes and I have one sub, we just ran out of gas is what I think it came down to,” said Piede. “We’re doing the best with what we’ve got.”
Both coaches credited the other team for their efforts in the rivalry contest, which is as friendly of a rivalry as Dunkirk-Fredonia can be. The two coaches spend time coaching many members of both teams in the offseason.
“It’s a nice group of girls on both sides. We like playing against and with the Dunkirk girls all summer long,” said Tomaszewski. “We’ve got a lot of tight bonds and it’s always fun to play them.”
Those tight bonds were not broken by consecutive Dunkirk defeats at the hands of Fredonia.
“Congrats to all the seniors on both sides. … I coach a lot of (Fredonia’s players) so I was happy to see those faces. I hope they do well the rest of the way,” said Piede.
Dunkirk has four league contests remaining the rest of the regular season as the Marauders look for their first win in league play.
Fredonia, coming off last season as Section VI co-champions, has three more league games to play over the next two weeks to close out the regular season. The Hillbillies play Olean on Thursday.
“This team is pretty special. After last year, it’s hard to follow in those footsteps, but I think we’ll be OK come playoffs,” said Gondek.

By Christina Flores-Chan and Matthew Davison
Long before the metaverse became a common term, Michael Bergmann, an assistant professor at Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) School of Performance and director of research at the Technological Research in Performance Lab had been incorporating it into not only his own storytelling, but also in his teaching.
Throughout the university’s time online during the pandemic, Bergmann said he took the opportunity to explore other mediums of performance besides the program’s usual in-person theatrical shows. He began using virtual reality (VR), a computer-generated experience that immerses users into a simulated environment with a headset, as a virtual stage for his students.
“Taking aspects of scenic design, lighting design and sound design, we’re basically creating that environment originally in VR, then we’re having the actors come into it,” Bergmann said.
For certain projects, actors would perform live using their own headsets and the audience would join in through VR. “The fun aspect of it is you can do things in VR and in the metaverse that you can’t do in real life. So all of a sudden, we can jump between floors, you know?” said Bergmann.
“The actors can change the entire scene and now we’re in a completely different environment. It takes a lot of the magical aspects of theatre and performance and gives us another tool to really make that immersive.”
To some students, the term metaverse may be a foreign concept—a word associated with the neon green coding language from The Matrix or reminiscent of a dystopian future where society exists only online. For others, the word might just have as much significance as the newest name of the technology company Meta, formerly known as Facebook. And as it happens, none of those guesses would be very far off.
“You can do things in VR and in the metaverse that you can’t do in real life”
The “metaverse,” according to Forbes, is an umbrella term for the virtual, online worlds that are accessible through three-dimensional, immersive technologies such as artificial intelligence, VR and augmented reality. Different applications of the metaverse work to simulate and enhance the physical reality in which society currently exists.
For instance, while Bergmann’s virtual stage helped students to maximize their education in the physical world throughout online learning, other spaces aim to simply provide users with a digital alternative to the analog one.
These digital spaces are made possible through blockchain technology, which is defined by the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) as a decentralized database that collects, records and tracks all digital assets and transactions, like the trading of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), that exist across a network.
“If we’re not engaging with the metaverse at this point, then we’re behind”
Through the trading of NFTs, virtual real estate and cryptocurrency, metaverse users can spend and earn capital in the digital space. Brands like Gucci and Nike have already released fashion designs made specifically for digital avatars, while the National Football League partnered with Ticketmaster earlier this year to offer NFT tickets in celebration of the 2022 Super Bowl.
And these spaces are projected to keep growing. A September report by GlobalData valued the metaverse market size at $22.79 billion USD (or $31.1 billion CAD) in 2021 and it is estimated to balloon to $996.42 billion by 2030.
According to another article in Forbes, the metaverse’s eventual goal is to create “an individualized experience for the user,” allowing participants to travel and experience destinations around the world through VR and a headset or communicate with other users in ways that mimic real-life interaction.
For Bergmann, one of the only setbacks of using advanced technology for performance was the challenge of making VR headsets accessible to members of the audience. He thinks, however, that in a few years time, metaverse technology will become more common.
“It’s still kind of a niche market because of the hardware requirements. As soon as the hardware becomes ubiquitous, that’s going to open the floodgates for people creating for this space and for the people engaging with that,” Bergmann said.
He said so far, his students have been excited about the possibilities of performance in the metaverse, especially within education. “If we’re not engaging with the metaverse at this point, then we’re behind.”
Fourth-year marketing management student Sabrina Padilla said she has noticed her Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) classmates taking an interest in the metaverse as well.
“[The metaverse] is a big area of interest for student innovators, especially within the business, finance and tech realms,” Padilla said. “Although I can’t guarantee that it will be successful, it has a lot of potential for growth.”
“Right now, it feels like a spruced-up Poptropica or Club Penguin”
Padilla recalls analyzing furniture brand Ikea’s AI interactive design experience, IKEA Kreativ, in class. The program allows users to visualize what specific products would look like in their own homes by using their phone’s back camera to place furniture virtually in a space.
“When you get the app, you can see the products and visualize it as if it was right in front of you. It creates a more dynamic environment for people,” Padilla said.
Once developed, digitally-focused companies hope the metaverse will become a resource for shopping for both digital and physical products, plus being used for services like education and doctor’s appointments, according to Reader’s Digest.
At the moment though, the virtual space is mostly used for gaming, an activity in which students participate at their leisure. Ben Chandler, a fourth-year sport media student and the captain of TMU’s National Hockey League esports team, believes that gaming in the metaverse still has room for improvement.
“There are definitely some cool parts, but as far as the practicality of competitive gaming goes, being in VR [and] being in the metaverse doesn’t add much to the experience,” Chandler said.
A poll conducted by Globant, a tech company that helps businesses move into the digital sphere, found that 52 per cent of gamers in the United States believe that the metaverse will change the landscape of the industry and 41 per cent believe that it will have a positive impact.
Chandler added that because it’s still so new, most gaming in the metaverse is similar to existing in a virtual meeting room, like Zoom, rather than the immersive experience that video games provide. “Right now, it feels like a spruced-up Poptropica or Club Penguin.”
“You never know how integral it could be [to] the way we live 15 years from now”
One of the main ways gaming is changing is through the continued development of NFTs. According to digital business consulting firm EY, items within games that are purchased or earned, such as weapons or skins, are turning into NFTs. This allows gamers to acquire, create, develop and sell virtual properties.
Chandler said that while he would not invest in NFTs at present, he believes this aspect of the virtual world could explode as gaming within the metaverse continues to grow.
Padilla shared the same opinion as her fellow student on the potential of the metaverse, in all its industries and purposes.
She compared the ever-growing digital sphere to the internet in the 90s:, a new technology that had not yet been explored but would soon be transformational to human life and interaction around the world.
“The one constant about our world is that it’s changing,” she said. “And people should be open to learning more about the metaverse,” Padilla said.

It’s the 60th anniversary of James Bond and the right time for all TikTok to be going crazy for “James Bond chord guy” – Jord, or @jrw21 – who’s got 1.4m views and climbing for his hilarious guitar tutorial on how to play the James Bond Chord, E minor with a major 7th and 9th, first used in the soundtrack for the first Bond film, Dr No, which premiered on 5 October 1962.
The tense, unresolved chord, says Jord, usually follows Bond saying something cool and then Jord himself demonstrates in a surreally broad Sheffield accent: “Oh Mr Goldfinger, yeah. Come in. We’ve got space for you to have a haircut. Come on, sit down here. Fuckin’ jokin, dickhead. I’m not really a barber. I’ m fuckin’ James Bond. Short back and blow your fuckin’ ’ead off? TWAT!” And then that eerie chord ….
Nothing demonstrates the phenomenal survival potency of the canonical 007 movie brand over 60 years, like that viral video. Somehow secret agent Bond, that preposterous dinner-jacketed imperial throwback, has persisted into 21st century popular culture as the exemplar of nonchalant alpha-maleness, evolving in such a way as to absorb and assimilate all the irony and objection that has been thrown his way.
It is the most bulletproof action franchise of all, whose basic unitary identity has carried on for six decades. Like Doctor Who, Bond has survived by regenerating – from Connery to Lazenby to Moore to Dalton to Brosnan to Craig – but Doctor Who doesn’t have the continuity or international recognition (or not quite). Like Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, 007 is an addictive returning persona, but those legendary sleuths, however feted in the cinema, never had 007’s single movie marketplace dominance.

Harry Potter had a staggering run in tandem with the books’ appearance: but Daniel Radcliffe has now grown up. Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible movies and his Top Gun revival are colossal box office hits but even the Cruise can’t last for ever. Yet Bond carries on, apparently endlessly rebooting. But now, after the great apocalyptic ending of No Time to Die, the new Bond has to be finessed or retconned somehow. They must choose a new pope of luxury watch wearing and sexual banter from the various cardinals now assembling in Vatican City of Eon’s offices in London’s Piccadilly: Tom Hardy? Regé-Jean Page? Tom Hiddleston? Idris Elba? We do know that Eon are not looking for someone in their 20s. Gen Z is out. Brooklyn Beckham need not apply.
James Bond’s appearance in the cinema was and continues to be a cash cow for Eon productions (now bought out, with MGM, by Amazon) and a global cultural phenomenon. It was a consolatory declinist fantasy for Britons, essentially the second world war action man of Ian Fleming’s conception in the books whose derring-do is cleverly presented as “secret” in a postwar world where Old England doesn’t count for as much.
And yet, when Dr No was released in cinemas in 1962, Britain still had quite a few imperial possessions, including Hong Kong, Grenada, Kenya, Malawi and Qatar. And Sean Connery’s Bond became the standard bearer for that new detumescent paradox of British prestige: soft power. Bond was a great ambassador for British style, British class. And throughout the Connery-Lazenby-Moore years, international air travel and consumer gadgets were still not commonplace, at least not for the pennypinched, IMF-humiliated Brits who lapped it all up, and so Bond was a delicious Walter Mitty reverie which floated on to the present.

Soft power was the thing. And the irony was that this essentially conservative establishment figure became Britain’s soft power standard-bearer into the 1960s and beyond alongside those long-haired caterwauling non-establishment layabouts that Bond detested: British pop stars. In Goldfinger, Bond declares that drinking Dom Perignon ’53 above the temperature of 38 degrees fahrenheit is as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs. That was a stuffy and pompous thing for Bond to say, but The Beatles really forgave him: Paul McCartney wrote one of the great Bond themes with Live and Let Die and Ringo Starr married Barbara Bach, who was, in the toe-curlingly sexist language of the time, a “Bond girl”.
And so Bond carried on; through the eras of Reagan-Thatcher, the fragile special relationship, 9/11, the “war on terror”, the 2012 London Olympics (in which Daniel Craig’s Bond co-starred with the Queen) and now the Brexit retreat into Fortress Britain, he somehow aligned himself with the exo-skeletal inhumanity of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator and the wised-up ordinariness of Matt Damon’s Bourne, slightly modifying his style to accommodate these eddies in fashion. And in the last Bond movie, No Time to Die, in which the 007 title is given to a new agent, stylishly played by Lashana Lynch, there is even some mockery of Bond’s obsolete attitudes, his ageing and his dodgy knee.

Will the new Bond send himself up? I don’t think so. When Danny Boyle was hired to direct No Time to Die, he reportedly got himself fired from the project because he and writer John Hodge wanted to re-imagine the script and chuck some new ingredients into the Coca-Cola formula. Eon chiefs Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson balked. The point is that the audience and the pundits can do the re-imagining and the ironising but Bond himself plays it straight, with a few teases and quirks.
I have myself been one of those (many) people asking Eon if they might refresh the Bond brand by going back to basics or pre-basics and dramatise the original non-gadget Bond from the 1950s Ian Fleming novels. Well, the movies need the luxury and the glamour so that won’t fly, not even in a streaming TV series. But what about a prequel series imagining the dashing young M’s own adventures at the end of the war and then in rationing-hit London? That would leave the central icon untouched. Either way, Bond’s tux will probably come back from the dry cleaners good as new or thereabouts.

New research from blockchain analytics and crypto compliance firm Elliptic has revealed the extent to which cross-chain bridges and decentralized exchanges (DEXs) have removed barriers for cybercriminals.
In an Oct. 4 report titled “The state of cross-chain crime,” Elliptic researchers Eray Arda Akartuna and Thibaud Madelin took a deep dive into what they described as “the new frontier of crypto laundering.” The report summarized that the free flow of capital between crypto assets is now more unhindered due to the emergence of new technologies such as bridges and DEXs.
Cybercriminals have been using cross-chain bridges, DEXs, and coin swaps to obfuscate at least $4 billion worth of illicit crypto proceeds since the beginning of 2020, it reported.
Around a third of all stolen crypto, or roughly $1.2 billion, from the incidents surveyed, was swapped using decentralized exchanges.
Delving further into the details, the report noted that more than half of the illicit funds it identified were swapped directly through two DEXs — Curve and Uniswap, with the 1inch aggregator protocol coming a close third.
A similar amount (around $1.2 billion) has been laundered using coin swap services which allow users to swap assets within and across different networks without having an account.
“Many are advertised on Russian cybercrime forums and cater almost exclusively to a criminal audience,” it noted.
Sanctioned entities are increasingly turning to such technologies in order to move funds and carry out cyber-attacks, according to Elliptic.
“Wallets connected to groups eventually sanctioned by the United States – including those used by North Korea to perpetrate multi-million-dollar cyberattacks – have laundered more than $1.8 billion through such techniques.”
In a June report on virtual asset risks, global money laundering, and terrorist financing watchdog, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), also fingered cross-chain bridges and “chain hopping” as a high risk.

The Ren bridge was mentioned as a top choice for crypto laundering with the vast majority of illicit assets, or more than $540 million, passing through it.
“Ren has become particularly popular with those seeking to launder the proceeds of theft,” it said.
One potential solution to mitigate crypto theft was proposed by Stanford researchers last month. It involves an opt-in token standard called ERC-20R that provides the option to reverse a transaction within a set time period.

Taiwan Vows To Protect Its Firms’ Interests At U.S.-Led ‘Chip 4’ Group – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/taiwan-vows-to-protect-its-firms-interests-at-u-s-led-chip-4-group-reuters/
TAIPEI, Oct 5 (Reuters) – Taiwan will use the new U.S.-led “Chip 4” group to safeguard the interests of Taiwanese companies and to ensure supply chain resilience, a deputy minister said on Wednesday, though he added that the group had no agenda yet.
A preliminary meeting of the group took place last week with representatives from Taiwan, the United States, South Korea and Japan attending. read more

Taiwan Deputy Economy Minister Chen Chern-chyi told reporters in Taipei that chipmaking required collaboration to ensure a “very resilient supply chain”.
“We will use that platform to strive to safeguard our companies’ interest,” he said, but added that the group not started formal meetings.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has said that the island is committed to ensuring its partners have reliable supplies of semiconductors and has urged allies to boost collaboration amid intensified threats from China.
Beijing claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan’s government rejects China’s sovereignty claims.
The “Chip 4” group’s Asian members are home to the world’s largest contract chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW), South Korean memory chip giants Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS), and key Japanese suppliers of semiconductor materials and equipment.
The establishment of the group also comes on the heels of a new U.S. law passed in August that includes $52 billion in subsidies for companies that make chips or conduct chip research in the United States, as Washington looks to lessen U.S. reliance on Asia for semiconductors.
Asked about the United States wanting to reduce its reliance on manufacturing in Taiwan, Chen said Taiwan’s chip industry has a well integrated supply chain and a very good workforce.
“From the government’s perspective we think Taiwan’s advantage and Taiwan’s edge in developing the most advanced manufacturing technology will always be here in Taiwan.”
But the government is happy to see Taiwanese chip firms investing in like-minded countries, he added.
“We think that will only deepen and strengthen our relations.”

Facebook is shuttering its Bulletin subscription service, ending its attempt to compete with Substack and other newsletter services.
Facebook, which is now part of the parent company Meta, has contacted writers within the program to tell them that the Bulletin platform will be wound down early next year.
“Bulletin has allowed us to learn about the relationship between creators and their audiences and how to better support them in building their community on Facebook,” the company confirmed in a statement Tuesday. “While this off-platform product itself is ending, we remain committed to supporting these and other creators’ success and growth on our platform.”
The program began in June last year, aiming to attract independent writers when more were looking to leave publications and have a direct relationship with their readers and take home all of their own revenue. It was looking to mimic the success that Substack, another newsletter platform, had with enticing writers to build their own newsletter brands.
A note at the time from executives said Bulletin would support writers with a suite of publishing and subscription tools, as well as services like legal resources and design.
“Our unique ability to help talented people find and connect with the audiences and markets they need to flourish gives independent journalism a greater opportunity to thrive,” wrote Campbell Brown, vice president of news partnerships, and Anthea Watson Strong, product manager for news.
Bulletin began with a group of established writers and high-profile names, including Malcolm Gladwell, James Hamblin and Erin Andrews, as well as up-and-coming writers. It also offered support to local news writers through a $5 million commitment.
Some of the deals were in the six figures. The contracts, some of which were for two years and go into 2024, will be paid in full, according to two people with knowledge of the decision. The writers are able to take their content and subscriber lists with them.
Meta had previously specified that it would not take a cut of subscription revenue “until at least 2023.”
There were signs in July that the program would not last much longer. Facebook executives told employees that month that the company was shifting resources away from its news offering and Bulletin and toward projects that focused on the creator economy, as first reported in The Wall Street Journal.
Other newsletter projects have also suffered in recent months. Substack laid off 14% of its staff in June. It had discussed raising more funding last year, but shelved the plan.
