College Football Schedule, Games 2022: What To Watch In Week 5, TV Channels, Saturday Kickoff Times – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/college-football-schedule-games-2022-what-to-watch-in-week-5-tv-channels-saturday-kickoff-times-cbs-sports/ Plenty of intriguing games featuring title contenders headline the Week 5 slate as the calendar turns to October Sep 30, 2022 at 8:00 pm ET • 3 min read USATSI The first Saturday in October is almost here and that means the landscape of college football will be dominated by the developing conference races as we approach the season’s midpoint. Saturday’s Week 5 slate brings us plenty of action with conference title race implications from noon ET through well past midnight, including a showdown in the SEC West where No. 2 Alabama heads to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to take on the 20th-ranked Razorbacks in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week.  Elsewhere in the SEC, No. 14 Ole Miss will host No. 7 Kentucky in a cross-division matchup that will serve as a measuring stick for each of the two upstart contenders. Meanwhile, a much-anticipated battle in the ACC Atlantic takes center stage in primetime as No. 5 Clemson hosts No. 10 NC State.  It’ll be a busy Saturday across the country, so here’s a handy viewer’s guide to help you navigate the action. All times eastern. The best games No. 4 Michigan at Iowa — noon on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): Weird things happen in Iowa City, Iowa, when top-five opponents come to town, and the Wolverines will now step into the madness. Of course, if the Hawkeyes are going to spring the upset, they’ll probably have to score multiple touchdowns. That’s easier said (or written) than done. No. 7 Kentucky at No. 14 Ole Miss — noon on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free): Running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. will be back for the Wildcats, and will be facing a Rebels defense that has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the young season. Meanwhile, the Rebels boast one of the best running back duos in the country with Quinshon Judkins and Zach Evans. If you haven’t watched this rushing attack, get your popcorn ready.  No. 2 Alabama at No. 20 Arkansas — 3:30 p.m. on CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free): The Razorbacks are in desperation mode after falling to Texas A&M last week but will have the chance to get back into the national picture if they can pull the upset on the Crimson Tide. Four of Alabama’s last five true road games have been one-score games, so don’t discount a nail-biter. No. 9 Oklahoma State at No. 16 Baylor — 3:30 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): This rematch of last year’s thrilling Big 12 Championship Game will feature two teams that are unbeaten in conference play and could factor into the College Football Playoff race. The Cowboys were off last week, so they’ve had two weeks to prepare for revenge against Dave Aranda’s Bears. No. 22 Wake Forest at No. 23 Florida State — 3:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): The Demon Deacons can’t afford another conference loss after falling to Clemson last weekend, and the defense will have a challenge on its hands against a Seminoles team that has been tough to match up with this year. This game will serve as a pivot point in the race for the ACC Atlantic title. No. 10 NC State at No. 5 Clemson — 7:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): Clemson gained confidence last weekend when quarterback DJ Uiagalelei lit up Wake Forest’s defense, and now it looks like a complete football team. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack can make a big statement to the college football world if it can spring an upset in Death Valley. Best of the rest No. 18 Oklahoma at TCU — noon on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Purdue at No. 21 Minnesota — noon on ESPN2, fuboTV (Try for free) Texas Tech at No. 25 Kansas State — noon on ESPN+ Georgia State at Army — noon on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App Oregon State at No. 12 Utah — 2 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks, fuboTV (Try for free) Rutgers at No. 3 Ohio State — 3:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Northwestern at No. 11 Penn State — 3:30 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) Fresno State at UConn — 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App No. 17 Texas A&M at Mississippi State — 4 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 1 Georgia at Missouri — 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) San Jose State at Wyoming — 7:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App Georgia Tech at No. 24 Pittsburgh — 8 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Arizona State at No. 6 USC — 10:30 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) Stanford at No. 13 Oregon — 11 p.m. on FS1, fuboTV (Try for free)

I Watched A Metaverse Concert And This Is What It Was Like TODAY
I Watched A Metaverse Concert And This Is What It Was Like TODAY
I Watched A Metaverse Concert And This Is What It Was Like – TODAY https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/i-watched-a-metaverse-concert-and-this-is-what-it-was-like-today/ SINGAPORE — There was a “DJ” on a large, illuminated stage playing a remix of Coldplay’s hit A Sky Full of Stars, and there were dozens of “people” dancing to the beat.  The famed Supertrees from Gardens by the Bay appeared to tower over the venue, and they were pulsating with pink neon lights. The ground, too, was emanating light, and a building that looked like Marina Bay Sands stood in the distance.  This concert would have cost organisers and arm and a leg to host, taking up virtually the entirety of the Gardens by the Bay venue.  But the truth was, the organisers had not spent a single cent on renting out the space, or on any physical props, for that matter.  In fact, “I” was attending this concert, not in my own 28-year-old male self, but in pixels, as a young female avatar wearing hot shorts and a hoodie.  In other words, I was attending a concert in the metaverse.  A metaverse is a three-dimensional virtual world where people socialise, work and play, and in this case, the metaverse was akin to a gaming world, where I had a specific character that could walk around and interact with the 3D environment.  The idea of the metaverse puzzled me, being someone who hardly plays computer games. So, when I heard that telecommunications company M1 was teaming up with Gardens by the Bay and e-gaming firm Electronic Sports Private Limited (ESPL) on Tuesday (Sept 27) to showcase a demo of a metaverse concert, I joined in on the fun. GROWTH IN POPULARITY OF THE METAVERSE It seemed like a concept for the distant future, up till I noticed that just last month, a couple had actually gotten married in the metaverse, which they said was the first marriage of its kind.  In fact, the metaverse has been a buzzword for over a year, ever since Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg renamed his Facebook company to Meta in October last year, signalling its big push into the metaverse.  Since then, various companies, both local and global, have delved into this concept.  For instance, DBS Bank last month collaborated with The Sandbox, a decentralised virtual gaming world, to acquire a unit of virtual real estate in The Sandbox metaverse.  Even governments have been delving into the metaverse. English language daily the Khaleej Times reported last month that the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Economy would have a new headquarters located in the metaverse, where anyone can visit.  Whether the popularity of the metaverse will continue to expand will depend on an “ecosystem” of different stakeholders, said Professor Lim Sun Sun, head of humanities, arts and social sciences at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. For instance, technology such as 5G networks, the accessibility of immersive devices such as virtual reality (VR) headsets, and the variety of metaverse events have to develop at the same pace to sustain the growth of the concept. “It speaks to the broader ecosystem, whether or not the metaverse environments are appealing, whether they are welcoming, whether the hardware becomes more comfortable, whether that sort of physiological experience of interacting with others (in the metaverse) becomes more palatable over time, and so on,” said Prof Lim.  BOTH A LIVE PERFORMANCE AND A VIDEO GAME For the metaverse concert demo, members of the media were invited to Floral Fantasy, an indoor garden at Gardens by the Bay, where we could use several smartphones on display, which was to be our window to the metaverse. This didn’t seem very special at first, as I initially thought that having a VR headset would make for a more immersive experience, by granting users a 360-degree view of the metaverse. However, I understood that not everyone would have a VR headset, so a smartphone could actually be the primary mode the metaverse is accessed in the future.  According to M1 and Gardens by the Bay, having the metaverse experience on a smartphone was a remarkable achievement in itself.  Deputy chief executive officer of Gardens by the Bay Lee Kok Fatt said that it is only with a 5G network that the metaverse can be experienced from the typical mobile devices. “The content (of the metaverse) is very rich and heavy, so before the advent of 5G, it required users to download a very big file to access the user experience,” he said.  He added that Gardens by the Bay, M1 and ESPL will be working together to provide 5G connectivity at Gardens by the Bay’s indoor venues and this will make such metaverse events more accessible there.  What I found special about the metaverse was that it was a mashup between both a live performance and a video game.  The “live performance” came in the form of an actual DJ, Jasmine H Nera, who goes by the stage name DJ Red, playing at this demo event. Her physical self, however, was at another location within Gardens by the Bay, while her avatar was on the metaverse stage that I could see from the phone, behind a DJ console. There was a “live chat” function, where I could type messages or questions to Ms Nera. I typed: “How will the metaverse benefit you?”  Ms Nera’s own physical face popped up on a large screen in the back of the metaverse stage and she was able to reply me, live.  “The convenience is there because it allows me to just stream from wherever I am… that provides me a great way to talk to my fans, especially the international fans, because they are not going to be able to fly in just for my show,” she said.  I found this function particularly distinct from a typical live performance, where performers would scarcely be able to respond to specific fans amid the chorus of screams. It added an intimate touch to the event.  And with the performance being viewed on a smartphone, it was a largely two-dimensional experience, with the sound quality itself the same as when watching a YouTube video. This paled in comparison to being at a live concert, as the feeling of jostling with the crowd and having live music blast out of large speakers could not be replicated.  On the other hand, the entire experience also felt like I was playing a video game, with my avatar’s movements around the metaverse space, from running around to jumping, controlled by me.  This was in theory supposed to give my avatar some degree of freedom in the concert venue. Sure enough, I could just weave between other partygoers and easily find myself at the front of the stage. For now, there was also no way for me to change my avatar from a woman to a man, let alone customise the avatar’s appearance and clothing, but this was an option that will be added in later, the developers told me.  Other burning questions which I had were also addressed, namely, whether there was any safeguard against harassment or abusive behaviour in the metaverse. For instance, could an avatar run on stage and disrupt the show, or hurl vulgarities at other audience members?  Project Chair of ESPL Roland Ong said that while there is nothing to stop users from posting what they want, there is the possibility of having moderators on the platform, to ensure that anyone deemed to be abusive or disruptive to the performance can be booted out of the metaverse.  “Secondly, we can use software to catch words that are undesirable, so that they are censored right away,” he added.  Overall, it was an extremely novel experience, one that I would not mind doing again when the operating system is more refined and updated. It presents an opportunity for me to “attend” a performance without committing a lot of time and money, yet also allows for some degree of interaction that an online video cannot provide.  However, I can safely say that I would not want the metaverse to replace actual live performances, as there is a certain tangibility about them that is difficult to emulate.  THE AIM IS NOT TO REPLACE LIVE PERFORMANCES: M1, GARDENS BY THE BAY My concerns that we were heading for an entirely virtual world bereft of “traditional” live performances were quickly assuaged, because the aim of testing out the metaverse was never to fully replace the real life concert experience.  Mr Ong from ESPL said that the metaverse will allow tourists the chance to “explore” Gardens by the Bay without flying down.  However, the end goal is still to attract people to visit the physical venue itself.  “(Gardens by the Bay’s) status as a global icon, we can use it to host local artists and showcase them to the world, that is another one of our objectives,” Mr Lee said.  Chief corporate sales and solutions officer from M1, Mr Willis Sim, said that other than cutting the costs of renting out large spaces, the metaverse provides concert organisers the opportunity expand their reach, by either holding an event entirely on the metaverse, or have hybrid events, where some of the audience is live, and another group is in attendance online.  “This will increase the revenue for the artists, the concert and the event organiser,” he said.  Members of the public, too, can hold their own metaverse events at Gardens by the Bay.  “If you book a wedding package, you can discuss with us right away, if you want an option to also make it available on the metaverse,” said Mr Ong.

Its Easy To Falsify Photo Geotags On Your IPhone To Keep Real Locations Secret Gadget Hacks
It’s Easy To Falsify Photo Geotags On Your IPhone To Keep Real Locations Secret – Gadget Hacks https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/its-easy-to-falsify-photo-geotags-on-your-iphone-to-keep-real-locations-secret-gadget-hacks/ Without realizing it, you may be giving away the GPS coordinates of your home, workplace, school, and other important or secret locations. Unless you’ve blocked the feature on your iPhone, location data is stored in almost every photo and video you take, and anyone you share the content with can find out where you are or were. But there are a few things you can do to safeguard the information. When you opened up the Camera app for the first time, it asked you if it was OK to use your location when using the app, and you likely approved the request. And that’s perfectly fine. Tagging your photos and videos with location data helps you organize and keep track of important moments in your life, and it helps the Photos app create Memory videos for you, to name just a few benefits. However, you may not remember that each image’s metadata stores the precise or approximate location where it was captured, or that anyone you share the image with can easily look up that information. You could even be sharing the GPS coordinates with hackers and the entire world if you upload content to services like DeviantArt, Flickr, Google Photos, and Unsplash. Don’t Miss: Apple Photos Has 20 New Features for iPhone That Make Your Life Easier Without Location Services disabled for camera apps, your iPhone doesn’t just use GPS networks to find your coordinates — it also uses Bluetooth connections, local Wi-Fi networks, and your cellular network. So even if you don’t have cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, location data could still be invisibly stamped on your images. Jump to a section: Disable Geotagging Altogether Delete Geotags When Sharing Delete Geotags Before Sharing Fake Geotags Before Sharing Option 1: Disable Geotagging Altogether If you never want your iPhone to tag photos and videos with geographical information, you can disable Location Services for Camera and any other camera apps you use. To do so, go to Settings – Privacy (iOS 15) or Privacy & Security (iOS 16) – Location Services, then choose “Camera” or another app from the list. From the app’s settings, you can: Disable “Precise Location” to generalize recorded location data. Change “While Using the App” to “Never” to disable the location access period. Change “While Using the App” to “Ask Next Time Or When I Share.” When you open a new session in your camera app, it will ask you for location access. You can turn off Precise Location and choose “Don’t Allow” (to never let it access your location) or “Allow Once” (to have it ask the same question with every new session). Option 2: Delete Geotags When Sharing Since iOS 13, you can quickly remove the location from any picture or video you share from the Photos app. Once you open the share sheet, tap “Options” at the top, and toggle off the “Location” switch before sharing the content with any person or service. This even works when sharing multiple photos or videos with embedded geotags. If you don’t see the “Location” toggle, the content doesn’t have any location data in its Exif metadata. Option 3: Delete Geotags Before Sharing Since iOS 15, you can delete the geotags in your photos and videos from the Photos app, which comes in handy if you don’t plan on sharing the content just yet but know you probably will. To delete the geotag of one photo or video: Open the content, then swipe it up or tap the info (i) button to reveal the content’s metadata. Tap “Adjust” below the map, then hit “No Location.” Open the content, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the quick actions menu, then hit “No Location.” (This works on iOS 16 and later only.) Open the content on iOS 15, tap the share icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the share sheet, then hit “No Location.” (This works on iOS 15 only.) To delete the geotag of one or more photos or videos: Hit “Select” from the grid view, choose the content, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the quick actions menu, then hit “No Location.” (This works on iOS 16 and later only.) Hit “Select” from the grid view, choose the content, tap the share icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the share sheet, then hit “No Location.” (This works on iOS 15 only.) To revert back to the original location: If you need the actual location back, use the same process above for single photos and videos. Open the content, then swipe it up or tap the info (i) button to reveal the content’s metadata. Tap “Add a location” below the map, then hit “Revert.” Open the content, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the quick actions menu, then hit “Revert.” (This works on iOS 16 and later only.) Open the content on iOS 15, tap the share icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the share sheet, then hit “Revert.” (This works on iOS 15 only.) You cannot revert multiple photos or videos to the original location simultaneously, so you’ll have to do them individually if you have more than one that needs to be changed back. Option 4: Fake Geotags Before Sharing While removing the location data altogether when sharing photos and videos is quick and easy to do, you can also make it look like you were somewhere else. That way, if anyone looks up the content’s metadata, they’ll see a fake location instead of the real one. It could take them on a wild goose chase if they attempt to locate your whereabouts, favorite hangouts, or frequently visited locations. It’s pretty much the same process to change the address for a photo or video in the Photos app as it is to delete it, as seen in Option 3 above, only you choose a specific location instead of “No Location.” To falsify the geotag of one photo or video: Open the content, then swipe it up or tap the info (i) button to reveal the content’s metadata. Tap “Adjust” below the map, then search for and select any location you want. Open the content, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the quick actions menu, then search for and select any location you want. (This works on iOS 16 and later only.) Open the content on iOS 15, tap the share icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the share sheet, then search for and select any location you want. (This works on iOS 15 only.) To Falsify the Geotag of One or More Photos or Videos: Hit “Select” from the grid view, choose the content, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the quick actions menu, then search for and select any location you want. (This works on iOS 16 and later only.) Hit “Select” from the grid view, choose the content, tap the share icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the share sheet, then search for and select any location you want. (This works on iOS 15 only.) To revert back to the original location: If you need the actual location back, use the same process above for single photos and videos. Open the content, then swipe it up or tap the info (i) button to reveal the content’s metadata. Tap “Adjust” below the map, then hit “Revert.” Open the content, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the quick actions menu, then hit “Revert.” (This works on iOS 16 and later only.) Open the content on iOS 15, tap the share icon, choose “Adjust Location” from the share sheet, then hit “Revert.” (This works on iOS 15 only.) Hawaii’s crypto market almost took its last breath after House Bill 2108 was indefinitely deferred in early May. The bill would have established a program for the licensure, regulation and oversight of digital currency companies in the state. Without its passing, the Digital Currency Innovation Lab was scheduled to close for transactions on June 30 for both businesses and consumers. Then on June 2, a two-year extension of the DCIL was announced. The news was a sigh of relief for the cryptocurrency companies participating in the pilot program. They can continue to do business in Hawaii without having to first obtain a state money transmitter license, at least until June 30, 2024. Check out more news from around Hawaii Those that choose to withdraw from the program will have to abide by the terms of the DCIL and wind down procedures starting on July 1 and concluding on Dec. 31.

Joni Ernst: The Ultimate Beneficiary Of … | U.S – Senator Joni Ernst https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/joni-ernst-the-ultimate-beneficiary-of-u-s-senator-joni-ernst/ Published: September 30, 2022 Washington is spending billions of your tax dollars every year to hypothetically achieve technological dominance over Communist China, but the ultimate beneficiary of that effort may just be the CCP. That is the shocking conclusion of a Department of Defense (DoD) review that found China was stealing technology developed in the U.S. by exploiting the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The report explicitly states, “China, not the U.S., is the ultimate beneficiary of DoD and other [U. S. Government] research investments.” This is how it works: American companies receiving taxpayer assistance for technology development from DoD and other agencies are recruited by China to continue their work at institutions associated with China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army. The U.S. company is then dissolved and the research and intellectual property paid for with U.S. tax dollars is transferred to a subsidiary in China. Just like that, American-made ingenuity is shipped overseas to our leading adversary, and we, the American taxpayers, are funding it! This isn’t just another case of intellectual property theft. This ongoing scheme has national and economic security implications according to the Pentagon. A researcher and the co-founders of a now-dissolved company that received four grants to develop technology for spacecraft and drones, for example, were allegedly recruited by the Chinese government and now work for institutions affiliated with the communist regime’s defense agency. Tens of millions of your tax dollars were spent on the development of other technologies, including broadband, biohazard detectors, solar energy, designs for military devices, and pharmaceuticals, that were all transferred to China. In an effort to end this insanity, I gave my September 2022 Squeal Award to all of the government agencies that have allowed these double-crossing companies to take your money and run off to China with the breakthroughs that rightfully belong to the U.S. I also introduced bipartisan legislation, that swiftly passed the Senate unanimously last week and the House just yesterday, that will require government agencies to do background checks on businesses seeking federal support while having ties to foreign countries of concern like China. The bill allows the agencies to take back taxpayer dollars from any business found to be a risk to U.S. national security. And I’m thrilled to report, this bill was signed into law by the president today. No matter how much of your money Washington spends to “win” the global tech race, we will never win by surrendering American-made innovation and subsidizing our adversaries. This cycle will continue until these grant programs are both required and empowered to hold unscrupulous recipients of taxpayer funds accountable for selling out to China. Thankfully, the new law I helped make will put an end to this cycle! Click here or on the image above for an official portrait of Senator Ernst. ###

Intels Self-Driving Technology Mobileye Unit Files For IPO Yahoo Finance
Intel’s Self-Driving Technology Mobileye Unit Files For IPO – Yahoo Finance https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/intels-self-driving-technology-mobileye-unit-files-for-ipo-yahoo-finance/ (Bloomberg) — Intel Corp. has filed for an initial public offering of its self-driving technology business, Mobileye Global Inc., braving the worst market for new US listings since the financial crisis more than a decade ago. Most Read from Bloomberg MacKenzie Scott Files for Divorce From Science Teacher Husband Top Apple Executive Is Leaving After Making Crude Remarks in TikTok Video Meta to Cut Headcount for First Time, Slash Budgets Across Teams Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Husband Files for Divorce After 27 Years Putin Says Annexation Is Forever, Defends Ukraine Land Grab The company didn’t disclose terms of the planned share sale in its filing Friday with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Mobileye will continue to be controlled by Intel after the IPO, according to the filing. Intel expects the IPO to value Mobileye at as much as $30 billion, less than originally hoped, Bloomberg News reported this month. If the listing goes ahead this year, it would be one of the biggest US offerings of 2022. Currently, only two companies have raised $1 billion or more on New York exchanges since Jan. 1, compared with 45 in 2021. This year, the US share of IPOs has shrunk to less then a seventh of the global total from half in 2021. Mobileye would also be following in the tracks of Porsche AG’s market-defying IPO in Frankfurt this week. That €9.4 billion ($9.2 billion) listing is the world’s second biggest this year and the largest since stock markets began their volatility- and inflation-driven downward spiral in January. Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger is trying to capitalize on Jerusalem-based Mobileye, acquired in 2017 for $15 billion, with a partial spinoff of its shares. Mobileye makes chips for cameras and drive-assistance features, and is seen as a prized asset as the car industry races toward fully automated vehicles. EyeQ Shipments Now with about 3,100 employees, Mobileye has collected data from 8.6 billion miles on the road from eight testing sites globally, according to its filing. the company says its technology leads in the race to shift the automotive industry away from human drivers. It’s shipped 117 million units of its EyeQ product. Mobileye has been a particularly bright spot for Intel and has consistently grown faster than its parent. As of July, it had $774 million of cash and cash equivalents. In the 12 months ended Dec. 25, it had a net loss of $75 million on revenue of $1.39 billion. The company said it plans to use proceeds from the IPO to pay down debt and for working capital and general corporate purposes. McCaskill, Huntsman Mobileye said in its filing that its board will include Gelsinger as chairman, and also former US Senator Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, and Jon Huntsman, the former Republican governor of Utah as well as ambassador to China who is now on Ford Motor Co.’s board. In its filing, Mobileye noted that it acquired mobility and transportation business Moovit from Intel this year. Moovit, another Israeli-based business, had been acquired by Intel for $900 million in 2020. A successful Mobileye listing could break the ice for an array of startups that have been waiting for the year’s market tumult to ease before moving ahead with IPOs. More specifically, it could clear a growing logjam of chip-related assets waiting to come to market. SoftBank Group Corp. also is trying to sell shares of semiconductor designer Arm Ltd. by early next year. Summer Struck Back In September The Cross Timbers Gazette
Summer Struck Back In September The Cross Timbers Gazette
Summer Struck Back In September – The Cross Timbers Gazette https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/summer-struck-back-in-september-the-cross-timbers-gazette/ Back in August, when record rains drenched North Texas, some of us were hoping for an early end to the cruel summer of ’22, but “no rest for the weary.” The first couple days of September brought us a little rain and a brief break in the heat but that was “all she wrote.”  (Max allows me two cliches’ per 500 words, so I’ve already hit my limit.) September was exceptionally hot and dry until the last few days of the month. The average high during the month was 92, three degrees hotter than normal. During the last nine days leading up to the cold front on the 25th Denton had 9 days in a row with highs at or above 95, including 99 degrees on the 22nd and 25th. The average low of 66 was just half a degree warmer than the normal average low of 65.5. The coolest overnight lows, (prior to the cold front on the 25th), were 58 degrees on the 10th, 56 on the 12th and 59 on the 15th. Why was the average low nearly on target while the average high was over 3 degrees hotter? Dry air. That brings us to September’s pitifully low rainfall of just 2/10ths of an inch as of the 25th. Even when the cold front struggled south, a couple heavy storms developed just barely south of Denton. What luck. So far this year, Denton Enterprise Airport has recorded only 15.36 inches of rain. No severe weather was reported in Denton County during September, but 1” hail was reported in Haslet in northern Tarrant County on September 4th, and most of North Texas had gusty winds from storms on the 4th and 5th of the month. The hot, dry weather was due to another strong surface high that settled over Texas and much of the South for most of September. The brief break in late August was all too brief. The summertime high pressure bubbles even helped to suppress tropical weather development in the Gulf of Mexico for the first three months of the Hurricane season. Despite its late start, we may see a big finish. All the stored up solar energy in the Gulf of Mexico has pushed water temperatures well into the 80’s. Any storm that develops or tracks into the Gulf will have lots of warm water to work with. The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting October to be warmer and drier than normal as excessive drought and heat tend to perpetuate each other. As they say, “If you don’t like the weather here, just wait five months and it’ll change.” Sooner, we hope.

West Rejects Putins Claim It Sabotaged Baltic Gas Pipelines 69News WFMZ-TV
West Rejects Putins Claim It Sabotaged Baltic Gas Pipelines 69News WFMZ-TV
West Rejects Putin’s Claim It Sabotaged Baltic Gas Pipelines – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/west-rejects-putins-claim-it-sabotaged-baltic-gas-pipelines-69news-wfmz-tv/ COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday accused the West of sabotaging Russia-built natural gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea to Germany, a charge vehemently denied by the United States and its allies. Nordic nations said the undersea blasts that damaged the pipelines this week and have led to huge methane leaks involved several hundred pounds of explosives. The claim by Putin came ahead of an emergency meeting Friday at the U.N. Security Council in New York on the attacks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, and as Norwegian researchers published a map projecting that a huge plume of methane from the damaged pipelines will travel over large swaths of the Nordic region. Speaking Friday in Moscow at a ceremony to annex four regions of Ukraine into Russia, Putin claimed that “Anglo-Saxons” in the West have turned from imposing sanctions on Russia to “terror attacks,” sabotaging the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in what he described as an attempt to “destroy the European energy infrastructure.” He added that “those who profit from it have done it,” without naming a specific country. In Washington, U.S. President Joe Biden dismissed Putin’s pipeline claims as outlandish. “It was a deliberate act of sabotage. And now the Russians are pumping out disinformation and lies. We will work with our allies to get to the bottom (of) precisely what happened,” Biden promised, adding that divers would be sent down to inspect the pipelines. “Just don’t listen to what Putin’s saying. What he’s saying we know is not true.” U.S. officials said the Putin claim was trying to shift attention from his annexation Friday of parts of Ukraine. “We’re not going to let Russia’s disinformation distract us or the world from its transparently fraudulent attempt to annex sovereign Ukrainian territory,” White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said Friday. Moscow says it wants a thorough international probe to assess the damage to the pipelines, which were filled with gas but not supplying it to Europe. Putin’s spokesman has said “it looks like a terror attack, probably conducted on a state level.” European nations, which have been reeling under soaring energy prices caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have noted that it is Russia, not Europe, that benefits from chaos in the energy markets and spiking prices for energy. The U.S. has long opposed to the two pipelines and had repeatedly urged Germany to halt them, saying they increased Europe’s energy dependence on Russia and decreased its security. Since the war in Ukraine began in February, Russia has cut back supplies of natural gas sent to Europe to heat homes, generate electricity and run factories. European leaders have accused Putin of using “energy blackmail” to divide them in their strong support for Ukraine. Russia stopped gas flows through the 1,224-kilometer (760-mile) long Nord Stream 1 earlier this month, blaming technical problems, while the parallel Nord Stream 2 pipeline had never opened. Denmark and Sweden, meanwhile, said Friday that the explosions that rocked the Baltic Sea ahead of the huge methane leaks from the pipelines “probably corresponded to an explosive load of several hundred kilos (pounds).” The leaks occurred in international waters and ”have caused plumes of gas rising to the surface,” the two Scandinavian countries wrote in a letter to the United Nations. NATO has warned it would retaliate for any attacks on the critical infrastructure of its 30 member countries and joined other Western officials in citing sabotage as the likely cause of damage. Denmark is a NATO member, and Sweden is in the process of joining the military alliance. Both say the pipelines were deliberately attacked. At the U.N., Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council while neither Sweden or Denmark will be represented at the meeting Friday as they are not members. The Integrated Carbon Observation System, a European research alliance, said “an enormous amount of methane gas has been released into the atmosphere” from the damaged pipelines, about the amount of a whole year’s methane emissions for a city the size of Paris or a country like Denmark. “We assume the wind on the leak area blew the methane emissions north to the Finnish archipelago, then (the emissions) bend toward Sweden and Norway,” said Stephen Platt, a professor with the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, part of the group. The data was gathered from ground-based observations in Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Experts say these methane levels aren’t dangerous to public health but are a potent source of global warming. The suspected sabotage has produced two methane leaks off Sweden, including a large one above Nord Stream 1 and a smaller one above Nord Stream 2, and two leaks off Denmark. The Nord Stream 2 leak “has diminished, but is still ongoing,” the Swedish coast guard said, increasing its warnings for ships to stay 7 nautical miles (13 kilometers, 8 miles) from the blast areas. Nordic seismologists recorded explosions preceding the leaks. A first explosion was recorded early Monday southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm. A second, stronger blast northeast of the island hit that night and was equivalent to a magnitude-2.3 earthquake. Denmark and Sweden also said they were worried about the blasts’ “possible impact on the maritime life in the Baltic Sea.” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she would travel to London to discuss the gas leaks with British Prime Minister Liz Truss. She then will travel to Brussels to raise the issue with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and European Council President Charles Michel. The attacks on the pipelines have prompted energy companies and European governments to beef up security around energy infrastructure. The fear of further damage to Europe’s energy infrastructure has added pressure on natural gas prices, which are already high and have caused widespread economic pain across the continent. Authorities in Norway, a major oil and gas producer, have reported at least six drone sightings near offshore installations in the North Sea, prompting the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway to “urge increased vigilance.” Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet said a drone was spotted Wednesday near a Danish offshore oil and gas installation in the North Sea. Sweden has also stepped up security around its three nuclear power plants. Movement Has Healed Me.” Tackling The NYC Marathon With Type 1 Diabetes – Beyond Type 1 https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/movement-has-healed-me-tackling-the-nyc-marathon-with-type-1-diabetes-beyond-type-1/ WRITTEN BY: Joanna Mattaliano  2022-09-30 Editor’s Note: Joanna is a member of the Beyond Type Run 2022 team—a team of nearly 50 people living with type 1 diabetes who will run the NYC Marathon on November 6, 2022. They’re on a mission to raise awareness and funds for type 1 diabetes. Cheer Joanna on by making a gift on her fundraising page! Imagine dedicating your career to health and wellness and finishing your sixth half marathon with a PR (personal record), feeling unstoppable. That was me in November 2021. Then everything changed. The list of warning signs was long but I didn’t think anything of it because I was so active. I was teaching indoor cycling three to four times per week and training for a half marathon. What seemed normal at the time was just the beginning of my body shutting down. Constantly being thirsty, tired, losing weight, fatigued, anxious, and experiencing changes in mood. But I was working out a lot. I thought my symptoms made sense. I was scheduled for a routine doctor visit in January 2022. She asked me if I had any concerns. I told her my symptoms and she thought it would be a good idea to get some blood work done. They called me on a Sunday afternoon. “I need you to come in, you have diabetes.” When you dedicate your career to helping others and practicing a healthy lifestyle you never think you will hear those words. Diabetes?! My A1c was off the chart. My doctor didn’t know how I wasn’t in the ER and only one thing came to mind. Movement saved my life. Being so active at that point was a true miracle. It kept my body out of crisis mode and kept me going with enough time to catch the rest of the warning signs.  From that moment, I wondered what would be next. The highs, the lows, the work. I questioned if I would be able to teach anymore or even go on a run. I took a few weeks off but then I got back on the bike and taught my first class. Feeling the movement that kept me here meant more than ever. I stumbled across a post one day from Beyond Type One about their NYC Marathon Team. I read the incredible stories of others fighting the same fight and was inspired by each of their stories. These people were just like me and many lived with type 1 for so much longer. I thought to myself “wow wouldn’t that be amazing to run a whole marathon with type 1.” And so now I am.  This journey has changed my entire outlook on being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. At first, I was angry, sad and it felt unfair. But each run I am reminded of how strong my body is. It brought me here and kept me strong enough to get through pre-diagnosis. Movement can heal your mind, your energy, and your perspective. I now find more gratitude and grace in each step I take. Movement has healed me. This January will be one year of living with type 1 and for me, training for the NYC Marathon has helped me overcome my diagnosis. I am honored to run alongside 49 others living with T1D and to cross the finish line for the millions of others fighting. WRITTEN BY Joanna Mattaliano, POSTED 09/30/22, UPDATED 09/30/22 Joanna Mattaliano lives in Richmond, Virginia, where she is an indoor cycle instructor and social media manager. In addition to turning back toward movement soon after her type 1 diabetes diagnosis, she also started her own small business just a few months later. She was diagnosed right after her 29th birthday in January 2022.

Red Bull Boss Christian Horner Says Team not Aware Of Any F1 Budget Cap Breach During 2021 Season Sky Sports
Red Bull Boss Christian Horner Says Team ‘not Aware’ Of Any F1 Budget Cap Breach During 2021 Season – Sky Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/red-bull-boss-christian-horner-says-team-not-aware-of-any-f1-budget-cap-breach-during-2021-season-sky-sports/ Christian Horner and Toto Wolff have shared differing opinions on speculation over breaches of F1’s budget cap Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says he is “not aware” of the team having breached Formula 1’s budget cap, amid reports they could be penalised for over-spending during the 2021 campaign. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff later described Horner’s comments as “funny”, and said the alleged breaches are a “heavyweight issue” that will have implications on results from the three world championships from 2021-2023. The sport introduced a budget cap last season, and reports claim Red Bull are one of two teams who the FIA will announce went over the $145m (£114m) spending limit, with an official announcement expected on October 5. Potential punishment for the teams found to have breached the regulations could range from financial penalties to points deduction, with the categorisation of the infringement as ‘minor’ or ‘material’ the crucial factor. Sainz leads Ferrari one-two from Leclerc in Singapore practice Sky Sports to remain home of F1 until 2029 with new deal When to watch the Singapore GP on Sky Sports F1 Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after opening practice at the Singapore GP on Friday, Horner responded to a topic that is threatening to overshadow the sport’s first visit to the Marina Bay Street Circuit since 2019. “We are certainly not aware of any (breaches),” Horner said. “The accounts were all submitted way back in March, so it’s been a long process with the FIA going through, and we are in that process as we speak. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Red Bull team principal Horner says that their submission of the budget cap for last season was the below the FIA’s cap Red Bull team principal Horner says that their submission of the budget cap for last season was the below the FIA’s cap “They are rightly following that process and I think mid-next week is when they declare their certificates. “Certainly our submission was below the cap and it’s down to the FIA to follow their process, which they are currently doing.” Horner also described the regulations as “immature”, and said that the interpretation and application of them would be “subjective”. The rules provide a range of sanctions that can be applied based on the amount by which teams have exceeded the cap. These include fines for minor offences, while material offences could result in a deduction of points from the drivers’ and teams’ standings, suspension and exclusion from the championship. The FIA released a statement before Horner spoke to Sky Sports F1 on Friday, insisting any breaches would be “dealt with” according to the regulations. The statement said: “The FIA is currently finalising the assessment of the 2021 financial data submitted by all Formula 1 teams. Alleged breaches of the Financial Regulations, if any, will be dealt with according to the formal process set out in the regulations.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Despite being on the brink of winning the championship in Singapore, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is refusing to get ahead of himself in his quest for a second world title Despite being on the brink of winning the championship in Singapore, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is refusing to get ahead of himself in his quest for a second world title Red Bull driver Max Verstappen pipped Lewis Hamilton to the 2021 drivers’ championship, while Mercedes narrowly won the constructors’ title. Verstappen is all but certain to add his second title this season, while Red Bull are in a similarly dominant position and look set to end Mercedes’ eight-year run of constructors’ titles. Wolff: ‘Heavyweight issue’ must be policed Reacting to Horner’s comments, Wolff told Sky Sports F1 that the breaches were a “heavyweight issue”, and also urged FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem to take a “robust stance” on the matter. “It’s funny that Christian (Horner) has said that because it has been weeks and months that they’ve been being investigated,” said Wolff. “So maybe he doesn’t speak to his CFO (chief financial officer). “All of us have been investigated diligently and, as far as we understand, there is a team is in minor breach, which is more procedural, and another team that is fundamentally massively over and that is still being looked after. That is an open secret in the paddock. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Mercedes team principal Wolff says that Red Bull are being investigated after Horner remained adamant that Red Bull had not gone over the cost cap Mercedes team principal Wolff says that Red Bull are being investigated after Horner remained adamant that Red Bull had not gone over the cost cap “I think there is a governance in place that is very solid that the FIA have set up and you are going to be issued a certificate of compliance and if you are not compliant it goes to the cost cap adjudication panel with independent judges, and they can then choose from these penalties the appropriate one.” The FIA said in a statement on Friday night: “The FIA is currently finalising the assessment of the 2021 financial data submitted by all Formula 1 teams. Alleged breaches of the Financial Regulations, if any, will be dealt with according to the formal process set out in the regulations. “The FIA notes significant and unsubstantiated speculation and conjecture in relation to this matter, and reiterates that the assessment is ongoing and due process will be followed without consideration to any external discussion.” Amid their domination of the 2022 season, there has been speculation in recent weeks that Red Bull have developed a new lightweight chassis, that could further their advantage over their rivals. Speaking ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Verstappen said, perhaps in jest, that he had made a deal with his team that if he won the previous race in Monza (which he did) with their heavier version of the chassis, he would continue to use it at this race. Wolff referenced the rumoured development as he continued his criticism, citing the knock-on effects over-spending in 2021 may have had. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player David Croft and Anthony Davidson takes us through all of the major talking points from Friday practice of the Singapore GP David Croft and Anthony Davidson takes us through all of the major talking points from Friday practice of the Singapore GP He said: “The crucial part is that if you have been over in 2021, then you’ve been over in 2022 and that means you have an advantage into 2023. If it’s true that they formulated a lightweight chassis this year, they may use it the next year, so it’s really a cascade of events that can influential on all of the three championships. “This is heavyweight, it’s massively heavyweight. “We are using used parts, we are not running what we want to run, we are not developing what we could be developing. “We have made more than 40 people redundant that are dearly missed in our organisation and it was a huge, mammoth operation to make the cap. “I don’t know how many tens of millions we had to restructure and reprocess in order to be below the cap and if someone has been not doing that or pushing the boundaries, every million is a massive disadvantage. “Even if it’s the so-called minor breach that can be below five per cent, you can spend seven million more than everybody else, and that means if this is a light penalty, we will all be pushing those five per cent more going forward.” Domenicali: Africa back on F1 calendar soon | Kyalami not only contender Ricciardo: F1 reserve role ‘realistic’ for 2023 | Steiner: Haas not waiting Hamilton ‘feels for fans’ amid Verstappen domination Speaking separately to BBC Sport, Wolf added: “It is of huge importance for a demonstration that these regulations are policed and I have no reason to believe otherwise. “The FIA, particularly Mohammed (Ben Sulayem), has shown a pretty robust stance on enforcing all kinds of regulations. So if we are talking now about something big, he will show the same integrity and leadership that he has done before.” Later, in an interview with PA, Wolff, who spoke directly to Ben Sulayem on Friday night, added: “I don’t know by how much Red Bull have overshot, and where, and what that means as a consequence for last year’s championship, this year’s championship and next year’s championship. “The catalogue of potential penalties is huge. And the independent judges will come to their conclusions. “We have had a massive restructuring process in the organisation to save $50m, and it has been overwhelming, distracting and a development deterrent. If somebody has been challenging that system, it is a major difference between winning and finishing third. “We are 10 kilos overweight at the moment, and that is three tenths of a second. For $2m, we could have taken 10 kilos out, and produced two lighter chassis so we are talking about a second or more in performance. “I have seen Mohammed act on regulations, minor or major, and what I like in the new system, whether it is Ferrari or Mercedes, is that they just follow the regulations. The FIA will do the right thing, and judge what the impact of such a breach was.”

How The Metaverse Is Democratizing The Fashion World – VentureBeat https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-the-metaverse-is-democratizing-the-fashion-world-venturebeat/ September 30, 2022 1:15 PM Fashion tech had a whole section to itself at CES 2017. Image Credit: Dean Takahashi Make room on the runway, Armani, Versace and Ralph Lauren.  Fashion is being democratized — and its future is virtual and moving to the metaverse.  “The world’s next Coco Chanel might be a young, 10-year-old, 8-year-old girl designing clothes in Roblox,” Cathy Hackl, chief metaverse officer and co-founder of innovation and design consulting company Journey said in a discussion at this week’s virtual MetaBeat event.  Fashion and technology are converging in both physical and virtual spaces, she said — and this isn’t only changing who is a fashion designer, but who can say they are one.  “It’s truly amazing to watch fashion and art pushing the limits of what we can do with this technology,” said Hackl. “It’s this moment and this feeling in the tech industry and the fashion industry of coming closer together than ever before.” For instance, Journey helped Walmart build Walmart Land and Walmart’s University of Play, two “new immersive experiences” within Roblox. The retail giant announced the new virtual endeavors this week, describing them as “bringing to life the best of Walmart’s ‘isles’ in a virtual world.”  “Walmart Land will bring the best fashion, style, beauty and entertainment items directly to the global Roblox community of over 52 million daily users,” the company announced in a blog post. “The retailer will continue to bring the fun with Walmart’s Universe of Play — the ultimate virtual toy destination in Roblox, just in time for those oh-so-real holiday wish lists.”  Users can explore a virtual store of merchandise, or “verch” for their avatars, ride Ferris wheels and play games and participate in competitions to earn tokens and badges. There’s also an “Electric Island” music festival with an interactive piano walkway, a dance challenge, a Netflix trivia experience with actor Noah Schnapp and a DJ booth where users can learn to mix different beats. This will host an “Electric Fest” in October, a motion-capture concert featuring artists Madison Beer, Kane Brown and YUNGBLUD. Meanwhile, a “House of Style” will offer products from af94, UOMA by Sharon C., ITK by Brooklyn and Bailey, Lottie London and Bubble, and will feature a virtual dressing room, a strike-a-pose challenge, a cosmetics obstacle course and a roller-skating rink.  This entrance of one of the world’s largest companies into the metaverse is nothing less than a landmark event, said Hackl.  “It’s the Fortune 1, massive retailer entering the space in a way that feels organic and well done,” she said.  Making the impossible, possible Meanwhile, Amsterdam-based digital fashion platform Fabricant Studio debuted its first collection in November; Hackl participated by co-creating the “Godmother of the metaverse gown.” “It was a beautiful moment for me,” she said, as she never dreamed that she could ever design couture.  The metaverse is “making the impossible possible, making the unthinkable completely at your fingertips,” agreed Sasha Wallinger, head of Web3 and metaverse strategy at Journey.  Wallinger described a “fashion language” of thinking several seasons ahead, ‘breaking to build’ and experimenting — much like the evolving metaverse experience.  The metaverse is “a new tool, a new mechanism of taking a risk, but having a really high reward in that risk,” she said. “It’s really truly bringing the fun back to that creative experience, that marketing journey.” No doubt, marketing and sales can often become stale, she said, but the metaverse is reinventing and innovating branding and development. And, while that can be about building “beautiful worlds” of gaming, it can also include building communities and events as Walmart has, Hackl pointed out.  No doubt, the metaverse is still being built itself, and much like the World Wide Web, it’s unclear how it will take shape, morph and evolve.  “Will we call it metaverse in 10 years? I don’t know,” said Hackl. But in any case, “in the metaverse, we are all world builders and now is our time to build.” VentureBeat’s mission is to be a digital town square for technical decision-makers to gain knowledge about transformative enterprise technology and transact. We’ve got you covered. Before we go any further here, we should note that we’re getting a normal episode of the series without a live component. Last week’s polarizing premiere was a one-off experiment. We’re glad they tried something new to drum up attention, but this is one of those shows that is better off taped in advance. Now, let’s go ahead and share the official synopsis before getting into the products: “1402” – First into the Tank are entrepreneurs from Apex, North Carolina, who pitch their step-by-step kit made to teach beginners how to create cuddly and cute animal characters. Entrepreneurs from Bend, Oregon, banana-split their proceeds to support endangered gorillas with their fun Bluetooth-enabled accessory; while entrepreneurs from Canton, Ohio, hope to hook a Shark with their rapid trussing device designed to cook the perfect bird every time. An entrepreneur from Mays Landing, New Jersey, introduces his luxury supply company that provides convenient personal storage for medical necessities on an all-new episode of “Shark Tank” airing FRIDAY, SEPT. 30 (8:00-9:01 p.m. EDT), on ABC. (TV-PG, L) Watch episodes on demand and on Hulu the day following the premiere. Now, let’s dive into all of the products themselves… Turbo Trusser – This is a gadget that you basically attach to your chicken, turkey, or duck prior to cooking to ensure that the bird cooks evenly throughout. It’s less than $15, and to us, it feels like a product perfect for the infomercial world. Stealth Bros & Co. – This is a pretty revolutionary idea that’s all about helping people in need with their medical necessities — while looking and feeling cool at the same time. They sell sharps containers and shuttles that are sleek, cool, and offer a sense of identity. Banana Phone – Is this an investible company? We have no real idea, but it’s hilarious — the whole idea here is a bluetooth “banana” that can be connected to your smartphone and used as its own separate phone. The idea may be a joke, but it also supports gorilla conservation — also, Reese Witherspoon bought one. The Woobles – If there is a slam-dunk product in this episode in terms of an investment, this is it: Crochet kits designed for beginnings that are easy, affordable, and produce some really adorable results. This is something that so many people may want to learn, but they may be concerned about accessibility. Well, be concerned no more! Related – Be sure to get some more news on Shark Tank right now! What do you most want to see on Shark Tank with Banana Phone, The Woobles, Turbo Trusser, & Stealth Bros & Co.? Share now in the comments! Crypto And Decentralization Could Influence Voters In 2022 US Midterm Elections: Report – Cointelegraph https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-and-decentralization-could-influence-voters-in-2022-us-midterm-elections-report-cointelegraph/ “Voters are less likely to support candidates perceived as standing in the way of a decentralized internet,” said Haun Ventures. 162 Total views 11 Total shares A poll of 800 likely midterm voters in four U.S. swing states suggested that the overwhelming majority favored ideas around decentralization, and many were HODLers. According to a Sept. 29 report from venture capital firm Haun Ventures on a survey conducted by business intelligence company Morning Consult, roughly one in five voters polled in New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Pennsylvania said they owned cryptocurrency or nonfungible tokens. In addition, 91% of respondents supported a “community owned, community governed” internet that “gives people greater control over their information.” Poll of 800 swing state voters who own digital assets. Source: Haun Ventures “Significantly, and reflective of how the values that voters associate with Web3 will drive electoral behavior, voters are less likely to support candidates perceived as standing in the way of a decentralized internet,” said Haun Ventures. “In other words, as both parties consider how good Web3 policy will translate into good politics, the values of Web3 are what voters want to see elected officials supporting, not standing in the way of.” Today, we’re sharing a poll commissioned by Haun Ventures and conducted by Morning Consult of likely 2022 midterm voters in four key swing states (OH, PA, NH and NV) that surveyed voters’ views on web3 and how they might impact their vote in November. https://t.co/NhMSviztDJ — Haun Ventures (@HaunVentures) September 29, 2022 The survey noted that the voters polled leaned slightly Democratic, but promoting a decentralized and democratized internet seemed to be a bipartisan issue, with both sides having “limited faith in the government’s ability” to regulate Web3. Haun Ventures reported that 55% of voters surveyed would be less likely to vote for political candidates who opposed internet decentralization policies, while 72% of HODLers in the poll said they owned digital assets “because they want an economic system that is more democratized, fair, and works for more people.” “This poll makes it clear that in these swing states, Web3 Voters now represent a significant cohort of the middle class electorate, and are younger and more diverse than the population as a whole.” Source: Haun Ventures Related: US lawmaker hints at calling for Republican votes in 2022 midterms over crypto policies The poll targeted people planning to vote in the 2022 midterm elections in the United States, to be held in November with candidates taking office in January. Morning Consult conducted the survey from Sept. 15–20. Katie Haun, a Coinbase board member and former board member for OpenSea, raised $1.5 billion to form Haun Ventures in March for investments in Web3.

U.S. Department Of Education’s Office For Civil Rights Announces Resolution Of Racial Harassment Investigation Of Peoria Unified School District In Arizona | U.S – US Department Of Education https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-department-of-educations-office-for-civil-rights-announces-resolution-of-racial-harassment-investigation-of-peoria-unified-school-district-in-arizona-u-s-us-department-of-education/ The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) today announced the resolution of a complaint of racial harassment filed against Peoria Unified School District in Arizona. OCR determined that the district failed to address harassment of students on the basis of race, color, and national origin, in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and its implementing regulations. Peer harassment included race-based slurs, such as targeting the n-word and “ching chong” at students, mocking police killings of Black people, pulling eyes back to mock Asian students, mimicking “Heil Hitler” salutes, drawing Swastikas on photographs of students’ faces on notebooks and in a bathroom, and saying Black people “do not deserve to live” and “should die,” a student’s skin looked like “burnt” food, and that a student should “go back to [their] country” and “eat dog.” Harassment by employees involved repeated touching of and comments exclusively about a Black student’s hair. The persistent, pervasive, and severe harassment and the district’s ineffective response caused significant and enduring academic, social, and emotional harm to the student who was the subject of the OCR complaint. Moreover, OCR found that a schoolwide hostile environment existed because at least a dozen other students of color at the school were likewise harassed based on race, color, or national origin by numerous peers. Although administrators and teachers at the school were aware of widespread harassment, the district repeatedly responded ineffectively, or not at all, to reported harassment, allowing the harassment to continue on a consistent basis and to create a school-level hostile environment. The district also did not offer any supports or remedies to students who were harassed. As a result of these failures, OCR determined that the district permitted students of color to be subjected to a hostile environment based on their race, color, or national origin that was sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it interfered with – or could have reasonably interfered with – their ability to participate in or benefit from the school’s program. The resolution agreement commits the district to take steps to ensure nondiscrimination based on race, color, and national origin in its education programs and activities. “Every student in every school deserves to learn free from discriminatory harassment,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon. “Peoria Unified School District today commits to come into compliance with longstanding federal civil rights requirements, ensuring that district students learn without discrimination based on race or national origin.” The district’s commitments in the voluntary resolution agreement include: Providing supports and remedies, where appropriate, to students who were subjected to peer harassment based on race, color, or national origin at the school. Conducting a climate assessment that examines the prevalence of harassment at the school, the hostile environment created by the widespread harassment, the school’s and district’s handling of reports of harassment, and measures for reducing harassment at the school and for improving the district’s response to reports of harassment. Issuing an anti-harassment statement and issuing a notice to parents about identifying and reporting harassment and about how the district is expected to respond. Reviewing, revising, and disseminating policies, forms, and record-keeping procedures related to harassment based on race, color, and national origin. Training staff about legal requirements under Title VI, reporting and responding to harassment, prohibited retaliation, cultural competency, and implicit bias. And, Providing developmentally appropriate educational programs about how to recognize and report racial harassment for school students. The letter to Peoria Unified School District is available here and the resolution agreement is available here.

Foodie Friday: Graffiti Pasta The Cross Timbers Gazette
Foodie Friday: Graffiti Pasta – The Cross Timbers Gazette https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/foodie-friday-graffiti-pasta-the-cross-timbers-gazette/ At its core, the art of graffiti celebrates the mashing together of different styles, ideas, cultures, and techniques. Which is exactly what restaurant owner, Anthony Morel, hopes to convey with Graffiti Pasta located in Denton Square. Graffiti Pasta combines his traditional Italian family recipes with some of his other loves – color, style, and the craft bar industry – to bring a unique take on Italian food. One of the first things we noticed when walking into Graffiti Pasta (besides all of the incredible color, art, and graffiti on the walls and furniture) were the CHOPSTICKS on the tables….? Who needs chopsticks at an Italian restaurant? So, we asked Anthony about it and he told us that’s one of the “graffiti” ideas included in the restaurant. In college he used to keep a big bowl of cold pasta in his fridge and would use takeout chopsticks to eat it during study breaks, for a late-night snack, etc. So why not bring that unique idea to a restaurant full of other unique ideas? Another one of Anthony’s unique takes is his Mean Green Lasagna which is based off of his grandmother’s chicken lasagna recipe and a green pesto lasagna that he loves from his travels to Italy. Combine that with operating in “Mean Green territory,” and you’ve got the Mean Green Lasagna! Photo courtesy of Graffiti Pasta Facebook Page As we were walking around the restaurant talking to other customers, we met customers who have already become regulars in the 4 short months since Anthony opened as well as customers who, like us, were experiencing Graffiti Pasta for the first time. But all the feedback was the same – this food is delicious! To start, Anthony brought us the Calabrese Caprese made with heirloom cherry tomatoes, smoked mozzarella balls, house made pesto, a balsamic reduction drizzle, and some calabrese chili oil giving it that signature Graffiti differentiator from any other caprese salad you’ve had before. One of Graffiti Pasta’s best sellers is a dish Anthony actually thought would never take off – the Tortellini La Flor. This dish is made with a tri-color cheese tortellini tossed in a bright lemon alfredo sauce and comes garnished with edible flowers, which is the part Anthony was sure no one would go for or appreciate. But people love that he’s incorporated his experience and love of being a bartender and craft cocktails into this pasta dish and the lemon alfredo sauce is so unique and delicious! We also got to try what Anthony says is the dish that started it all – the Rasta Pasta which is a fettuccine tossed with jerk-flavored alfredo sauce, tri-colored bell peppers, and jerk-seasoned pulled chicken. This one was AWESOME. And was a favorite of all of ours. Awesome jerk flavor complimented by the creaminess of the alfredo. But perhaps the most special menu item of all is the cheesecake which is made by Anthony’s mother using their family’s recipe that Anthony grew up getting to enjoy just twice a year, for his birthday and Christmas. Now he’s convinced his mom to quit her job and make cheesecakes for him so that he can enjoy it whenever he wants. Genius! We did mention that most of Anthony’s restaurant experience comes from behind the bar, so it’s no surprise that he also put a lot of thought into what drinks he’d serve at the bar here at Graffiti Pasta. One of Anthony’s favorite Italian cockatils is a Negroni, so he’s incorporated a classic Negroni as well as a few of his own unique creations inspired by family members. This was such a fun adventure for us to get up to Denton Square and check out Graffiti Pasta. We’re so glad we had the opportunity to meet Anthony and experience his vision for bringing lots of different worlds together to share his love for his Italian heritage and culture. There’s so much care and thought that has gone into every aspect of Graffiti Pasta and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself! *Graffiti Pasta is located at 118 W Oak St, Denton TX 76201.

With Travel Prices And Currencies Up And Down This Year, What Are Your Points And Miles Worth? – Morningstar https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/with-travel-prices-and-currencies-up-and-down-this-year-what-are-your-points-and-miles-worth-morningstar/ By Meghan Coyle Here’s a breakdown of their value at several airlines and hotel brands This article is reprinted by permission from NerdWallet. This has been an unusual year for currencies, period. Rising inflation has sent all sorts of costs skyrocketing (including travel prices). Meanwhile, the euro and British pound are falling in value relative to the U.S. dollar, making a European vacation somewhat … affordable? With all of these fluctuating prices, how are the currencies of airline and hotel loyalty programs, better known as points and miles, being affected? To get to the bottom of that question, NerdWallet turned to the data. The results of our annual analysis of the value of airline miles and hotel points is finally here, and it has some interesting stories to tell. To get our estimates, we collect real-world data on thousands of flights and hotel stays and compare cash prices and award prices to determine the baseline value of each loyalty program’s points. Here’s how the value of miles and points compares to last year — and what changes you should make to your travel rewards strategy as a result. See: 1 in 3 people say they overspent on travel to earn a credit cards sign-up bonus Most airline miles are worth more The good news is that almost all points and miles are worth more now than they were last year, possibly due in part to inflation, which has driven up the cash prices of flights and hotel nights. Airline miles are now worth an additional 0.1 cent-0.3 cents in value across the board. For example, United Airlines (UAL) MileagePlus miles were worth about 1 cent each in our last analysis, so 50,000 miles should have been able to get you a free flight worth about $500. If you didn’t use those miles last year, those same 50,000 miles are now worth 1.2 cents each. That means you can likely redeem them for a flight worth about $600 today. Keep in mind though, inflation has driven travel prices much higher. According to the latest set of Consumer Price Index data, airfare prices are up 33% year-over-year in August. Meanwhile, the valuations of airline miles are up only 8.7% on average from last year. So even though your miles are valued higher, you might still have to shell out more miles for a flight than you would have last year because the flight itself is likely more expensive. Also read:Four travel card perks that might not be worth it anymore Hotel points-wise, one brand stands out Hotel points saw a similar increase to airlines exacerbated by inflation. But there is one huge jump that stands out: World of Hyatt (H). Hyatt has long been a favorite of travelers because of its high value redemptions, and it has consistently had higher valuations than other hotel loyalty programs. Its fixed award chart has further cemented its value in this high-inflation year. This year, Hyatt’s valuation jumped almost an entire cent, from 1.9 cents per point in 2021 to 2.8 cents per point now. That means its points are four times as valuable as competitors’ like Marriott Bonvoy (MAR)( 0.7 cent), Hilton (HLT) Honors (0.6 cent) and IHG (IHG.LN) One Rewards. (0.7 cent). This discrepancy is likely due to Hyatt being the only hotel loyalty program with the aforementioned fixed award chart. The award chart specifies a limit for the highest number of points a night can cost at a certain property, even if the cash rate may go much higher. That’s where you’ll find Hyatt sweet spots. Read: ‘Forget about chasing rewards and seek the lowest interest rate possible’: Credit-card rates near peak not seen since 1996 How you might change your points and miles strategy Based on our findings, there are a few key takeaways to remember as you book travel into 2023. Consider flying airlines besides Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways. Last year, JetBlue (JBLU) and Southwest (LUV) had the highest-value airline miles, around 1.5 and 1.4 cents respectively. Now, American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), JetBlue and Southwest miles are all worth the same — around 1.5 cents. If loyalty with American or Delta is more convenient for you, start collecting their miles knowing that you’ll get about the same return. Target high-value transfer partners. If you have a travel credit card that earns transferable points, you might spend less points by transferring to a high-value partner like Hyatt instead of booking a Hyatt hotel through the credit card’s travel portal. Don’t miss: Three common travel disasters and what to do about them Calculate the value of your redemption before you book. NerdWallet’s valuations are a baseline value, meaning you should aim to get that value when you cash in your points for a free flight or hotel stay. But not all redemptions are created equal. Make sure you divide the equivalent cash price of the flight or hotel by the number of points they want to charge you. If that number is lower than NerdWallet’s valuations, you might want to save your points for a better redemption. You can use an airline miles calculator to simplify your calculations. Congress Poised To Leave Healthy Meals For Kids Out Of Stop-Gap Funding Measure – CSPI Newsroom https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/congress-poised-to-leave-healthy-meals-for-kids-out-of-stop-gap-funding-measure-cspi-newsroom/ Statement of CSPI President Dr. Peter G. Lurie While Congress is poised to avert a government shutdown today by passing a short-term funding bill through December, it will fail to include a pathway to free healthy school meals for all students, a key priority of the Biden administration’s recently unveiled National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. It also gave a cold shoulder to efforts to extend government oversight to a host of under-regulated product categories such as dietary supplements and diagnostic tests.  For over two years, schools nationwide have provided free breakfast and lunch to all students as part of the federal COVID-19 response. That policy ended in August and now, in most states, families must meet strict income guidelines (under $36,000 for a family of four) in order to qualify for a free school meal. Children living in poverty at the cusp of eligibility are no longer able to receive a free healthy school meal, and even eligible children may go hungry at school if their families don’t know they now have to apply or if the systems in place to identify eligible children fail. Before the pandemic, students who accrued debt on their school meal accounts were given a cold alternative meal or singled out in other stigmatizing ways until their balance was paid. Without Congressional action, these inhumane practices could resume.    Congress can and must do better by kids, and that starts with what they eat at school. When the short-term funding bill expires at the end of the year, an extension of healthy school meals for all must be included. In the same vein, Congress has the opportunity to pass a Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill to extend this policy permanently.   The funding deal also failed to make changes to how the Food and Drug Administration protects our food, dietary supplements, and healthcare products. Every five years, Congress must re-authorize a set of “user fees” from industry that help fund the agency. Typically, industry uses the occasion of this “must-pass” legislation to insert industry-friendly measures such as expedited paths to market for new branded pharmaceuticals, or various incentives to make drug development more profitable.   This year, the user fee package was different. It included useful provisions designed to help consumers by ensuring access to safe and reliable products. Republicans in Congress now see the virtue of a “clean” user fee bill, stripped of any measures beyond reauthorization itself. We urged Congress to pass legislation that would have ensured that Americans had access to safe dietary supplements, accurate diagnostic tests used in clinical medicine, a safe and reliable supply of infant formula and other essential medical foods, and food packaging free of harmful PFAS chemicals. Instead, Congress will extend FDA user fee programs for the next five years without these important public health measures. Lawmakers must revisit these protections in the next funding package after the short-term extension expires in December.   Dr. Lurie served as associate commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration during the Obama administration.  Contact Info:  Contact: Jeff Cronin, 202-777-8370 or Lisa Flores, 202-777-8368

Source Digital To Introduce Seamless Video/Metaverse Experience In Europe – PR Newswire https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/source-digital-to-introduce-seamless-video-metaverse-experience-in-europe-pr-newswire/ A recently-awarded European patent further solidifies Source as a Web3 Network of Networks. Deploying interactive content within coordinates values across any video and metaverse network. , /PRNewswire/ — Source Digital, Inc. announces the awarding of a European patent that further cements the company’s dominance in interactive video as well as in monetizable aspects of the metaverse. The patent not only covers functionality for activating visual content in video, but at any coordinate in any metaverse Source can enable interactivity for end users, empowering a more personalized, seamless video-metaverse (cross-verse) experience. Source Digital Source Digital already has the technology and IP that is agnostic to audio, video or metaverse – to facilitate personalized SAM’s (Source Activated Moments) designed for user engagement and interactivity around information, socialization, shopping, contextually targeted brands, advertising, and virtually any other extension of interactivity against moments in time. This patent further extends the company’s capability to deploy SAM’s directly correlated to any on-screen visual location in video (2D), metaverse (3D), or augmented reality (3D). Each SAM “coordinate” effectively creates a mapping system allowing end users to touch/click any digital location/object and get an interactive return of information – even buy or share it! Users can also re-experience or cross-link the precise metaverse moment when they originally found it. (Imagine clicking on a shirt and immediately accessing information about the brand, adding it to your cart, and buying or sharing it with a friend; then, jumping right back to the original moment when the item was found.) This patent also provides the ability to match the physical location of an end user (on earth) or digital object (in the metaverse) and identify its real-world coordinates. In all cases, these intersections can trigger additional digital interactive events (similar to the description above). As a bonus feature, the patent also extends the synchronization of metaverse experiences to traditional video. Users can watch a favorite movie and synchronize an in-world experience from that movie. They can also watch a favorite live concert, jumping back and forth from a lean-back physical world to a lean-in immersive virtual world. “We’re thrilled to expand our reach into European markets, with a greater capacity to optimize the user experience for creators, merchants, and advertisers,” shares Source Digital, Inc. Co-Founder/Chief Executive Officer Hank Frecon. “This opportunity enables us to join our advanced technology with the most cutting-edge online capabilities, bringing the metaverse and video alive like never before.” With 9 US patents already secured, Source Digital has established itself as the foremost innovator in the next generation of advertising and e-commerce. In 2022 alone, the visionary tech company pioneered groundbreaking partnerships with both the National Hockey League and key tourism departments across the nation. Implementing its next-generation ad tech solutions, consumers discovered an entirely customized viewer or visitor experience while brands found new ways to expand their audience. The July announcement of Source Digital’s partnership with Metaverse Investments Ltd. further solidified the company’s leadership in the rapidly expanding Web3 industry. Now, the awarding of an 11th patent allows this forward-thinking tech team to provide an even more personalized experience to the European market. (Kitco News) – Legislative activities related to cryptocurrencies in the U.S. are on the rise as the global push to establish a regulatory framework for crypto and launch central bank digital currencies (CBDC) continues to intensify.  In the U.S. Senate, a new bill has been introduced by Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) that proposes the creation of a safe harbor for cryptocurrency exchanges that might otherwise face legal ramifications for listing unregistered securities.  The text of the bill looks to establish a two-year grace period for crypto exchanges that would protect them from enforcement actions by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for listing tokens deemed to be unregistered securities by the regulating body. The beginning of the grace period starts once the commission makes an official determination that a token is considered unregistered security.  The bill also stipulates that exchanges will not be subject to legal action for failure to register as a broker-dealer or national securities exchange during the grace period.  Eventually, though, all exchanges listing tokens determined to be securities will be required to register as broker-dealers or national securities exchanges. In the event that the bill becomes law, the SEC will still be able to label tokens as unregistered securities via rulemakings, statements and enforcement actions, but the Commodity Futures Trading Commission would have the right to object. Exchanges can also sue to appeal any decisions in court, where a judge would then be tasked with making a ruling on the security status.   The bill faces a tough road ahead; however, as a limited amount of time left in the current legislative session decreases the odds of its passage anytime soon.  Cryptos in your 401(k) A separate piece of legislation recently introduced by three congressional Republicans looks to broaden the type of investments that managers of 401(k)s and other defined contribution plans can make, including the ability to invest in digital assets.  Dubbed ‘The Retirement Savings Modernization Act’, the bill would also allow financial advisors to recommend cryptocurrencies, along with other traditional investment vehicles like private equity or hedge funds, without legal liability.  Outgoing Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), and Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) are the sponsors of the bill. Statements given by the congressional members with the bill’s introduction cited inflation and “fiscal uncertainty” as the motivation for expanding retirement investment options. Limitations on 401(k) investments were also criticized as reducing the overall returns compared to traditional pensions despite the fact that far more Americans rely on 401(k)s than traditional pensions for their retirement needs.  “Our legislation will provide the millions of American savers invested in defined contribution plans with the option to enhance their retirement savings through access to the same wide range of alternative assets currently available to savers with defined benefit pension plans,” Senator Toomey said. The fate of this bill, too, remains up in the air; however, as Toomey is not running for reelection and Meijer recently lost his primary election to the Republican challenger Jonh Gibbs. There is still the possibility that the bill could be inserted into a broader end-of-year tax bill, but that remains to be seen.    Disclaimer: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and may not reflect those of Kitco Metals Inc. Tell Us What You Know About Stormwater Runoff! – City Of Spokane https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/tell-us-what-you-know-about-stormwater-runoff-city-of-spokane/ Meghan Havko, Wastewater Management Education Coordinator, No Phone Number Available Friday, September 30, 2022 at 11:01 a.m. What do you know about stormwater management? The City of Spokane’s stormwater drainage system is a large, complex network of conveyances that are designed to take rainfall and direct it away from streets, buildings, and other public and private property. Please complete this short survey by Oct. 31 to help us better educate the community about the importance of stormwater management. This survey was last conducted in 2019 and the goal is to compare results to see how best we can educate and serve our community. Stormwater management areas around the City collect and treat stormwater runoff by temporarily storing runoff and come in many shapes and sizes. They vary from simple swales, to constructed wetlands, to large grassy depressions in the middle of parks that are dry except right after a rain. Although their designs and appearance are slightly different, their functions and maintenance needs are similar. England WU23s, WU19s And WU17s Squads Named For October Internationals – England Football https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/england-wu23s-wu19s-and-wu17s-squads-named-for-october-internationals-england-football/ Published 30 September 2022 4 min read England Youth Teams Written by: Callum Davies There’s EURO qualifiers and international games for three of our England Women’s development teams in October England players across three age groups will be in action during October with the WU23s taking on Norway and Sweden while the WU17s and WU19s will begin qualification for UEFA tournaments next summer. Head of Women’s Technical, Kay Cossington said: “Every new international season is important for our players on the pathway but after the incredible summer for our seniors, we all have an extra spring in our step. We’re seeing real benefits from the reintroduction of our under-23 set-up, not least in providing more international opportunities for those players moving beyond the younger age-groups and the incentive is there following the EURO success. “For our WU17s and WU19s, taking part in official UEFA competitions gives them the chance to build confidence, face new opposition and learn about what’s involved in travelling away. “As much as we want to see progression on the pitch and qualification for final tournaments, we are also grateful for the chance to develop the players’ life experiences and grow their understanding of what it means to represent an England team.” WU23s The WU23s will look to continue their winning run when they return to action again next month with a trip away to Sweden. Mo Marley’s squad will take on their Scandinavian hosts in Falkenberg on Monday 10 October, with kick-off at 6pm local time. The last time an England age-group side met Sweden was at the WU19 EURO this summer when Sweden won 1-0 on 30 June in a group-stage fixture in Czech Republic. The upcoming Sweden fixture comes after the Young Lionesses won 2-1 in Norway earlier this month and the teams will meet again on Thursday 6 October in a behind-closed-doors fixture to be played at St. George’s Park. The WU23 squad have enjoyed some tough tests this year, starting with a double header with France in February, which ended with a 1-1 draw following a 3-2 defeat, followed by a 3-0 victory and a 0-0 draw against the Netherlands in April. England Women’s Under-23 squadGoalkeepers: Fran Bentley (Bristol City), Emily Ramsey (Everton on loan from Manchester United), Kayla Rendell (Southampton) Defenders: Asmita Ale (Tottenham Hotspur), Anouk Denton (University of Louisville), Jorja Fox (Brighton & Hove Albion on loan from Chelsea), Freya Gregory (Aston Villa), Maya Le Tissier (Manchester United), Poppy Pattinson (Brighton & Hove Albion), Mia Ross (Charlton Athletic), Kiera Skeels (Charlton Athletic) Midfielders: Missy Bo Kearns (Liverpool), Laura Blindkilde Brown (Aston Villa), Grace Clinton (Manchester United), Mel Filis (West Ham), Ruby Grant (University of North Carolina), Molly Pike (Leicester City), Charlotte Wardlaw (Liverpool on loan from Chelsea) Forwards: Angela Addison (Charlton Athletic), Ellie Brazil (Tottenham Hotspur), Jess Naz (Tottenham Hotspur), Shannon O’Brien (Leicester City), Katie Robinson (Brighton & Hove Albion) Last season’s WU19s reached the EURO Finals and will be starting out on the new campaign in October WU19s England WU19s will look to emulate last year’s achievement at the same age group when they begin qualifying for the 2023 UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship. The Young Lionesses under the guidance of Emma Coates will report on Sunday ahead of a three-match mini-tournament to be played in a round-robin format in Slovakia. Last season’s WU19s reached the summer finals in Czech Republic, achieving a 4-1 defeat of eventual runners-up Norway in the process. The prize this time around should England finish in the top three in their first qualifying round group and then make it through a second round is a place in the eight-team finals in Belgium next June. The first round of qualifying for the 2023 edition will begin in Group A4 against Slovenia next Wednesday at the Spišská Nová Ves Stadium with a 12pm kick-off local time (11am BST). England will then meet the hosts Slovakia on Saturday 8 October at NTC Poprad, this time with a 5pm kick-off local time (4pm BST). The group action will conclude on Tuesday 11 October against Denmark back at Spišská Nová Ves Stadium with a 2pm kick-off local time (1pm BST). England Women’s Under-19 squadGoalkeepers: Khiara Keating (Manchester City), Natalia Negri (Crystal Palace) Defenders: Katie Dungate (Chelsea), Naomi Layzell (Bristol City), Olivia McLoughlin (Aston Villa), Lucy Parry (Hibernian on loan from Liverpool), Evie Rabjohn (Aston Villa), Hannah Silcock (Liverpool), Jessica Simpson (Burnley – dual contract with Manchester United) Midfielders: Elysia Boddy (Bristol City), Shauna Guyatt (Crystal Palace), Alex Hennessy (West Ham United), Halle Houssein (West Ham United), Grace Palmer (Lewes), Mackenzie Smith (Nottingham Forest – dual contract with Leicester City) Forwards: Keira Barry (Derby County – dual contract with Manchester United), Mia Enderby (Sheffield United), Freya Godfrey (Ipswich Town – dual contract with Arsenal), Freya Jupp (De Paul University), Emma Thompson (Lewes on loan from Chelsea) England WU17s start out on their EURO qualifying campaign in Estonia this month WU17s The WU17s will begin their attempt to qualify for the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Estonia next month. Under the guidance of head coach Natalie Henderson, the Young Lionesses will travel to Tallinn on Tuesday for three first-round matches against Ukraine, the hosts and Denmark. A top-three finish in the group, which will be played on a round-robin basis, would take them through to the second round and keep alive hopes of making it to the summer finals which will also be played in the Baltic nation. Estonia are taking part in qualifying, despite their guaranteed place in the tournament. The hosts will be England’s second opponents on 10 October at Lilleküla Stadium with kick-off at 6pm local time, 4pm BST. The Young Lionesses will start against Ukraine at Kadrioru Stadium on 7 October (kick-off 2.30pm local, 12.30pm BST) and finish their campaign against Denmark in the same venue on 13 October 2022 (2.30pm local, 12.30pm BST) England Women’s Under-17 squad Goalkeepers: Katie Cox (Chelsea), Sophia Poor (Leicester City) Defenders: Daisy Hind (Chelsea), Scarlett Kagalwala (Chelsea), Grace Nascimento (Aston Villa), Lucy Newell (West Bromwich Albion), Katie Reid (Arsenal), Mari Ward (Bristol City) Midfielders: Lola Brown (Chelsea), Maddy Earl (Arsenal), Laila Harbert (Arsenal), Lola Nesbeth (Chelsea), Lexi Potter (Chelsea), Zara Shaw (Liverpool) Forwards: Michelle Agyemang (Arsenal), Ava Baker (Leicester City), Araya Dennis (Arsenal), Vivienne Lia (Arsenal), Ruby Seaby (Arsenal), Ruby-Rae Tucker (Aston Villa) WOMEN’S & GIRLS’ FOOTBALL: FIND OUT MORE

How To Travel More Sustainably Without Harming Destinations Insider
How To Travel More Sustainably Without Harming Destinations Insider
How To Travel More Sustainably Without Harming Destinations – Insider https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-to-travel-more-sustainably-without-harming-destinations-insider/ Traveling sustainably is about making intentional choices to serve your destination and planet well. We asked experts how to make these choices when planning a trip to be as sustainable as possible.  This article is part of “Better Me,” a series about improving your lifestyle and helping society through sustainable efforts and eco-consciousness. Loading Something is loading. Sustainable travel can feel like an oxymoron — as Justin Francis, the cofounder and CEO of Responsible Travel, a UK-based travel company that evaluates trips and vacation providers, told Insider. The travel industry can create jobs, or it can lead to over-tourism that lowers residents’ quality of life. Flights emit harmful emissions, but transport travelers to destinations where they can support local economies and participate in positive, nature-based tourism. Lodging accommodations can boost the local economy, or price residents out of their homes. But Francis believes people can travel “in a way that not only reduces harm but actively maximizes the benefits, for both planet and people.” Five other sustainable travel experts who spoke with Insider agree and say there are actions travelers can take to lower their negative impact, support the destinations they’re visiting, and have an overall better trip. They suggest considering every aspect of your trip — from where you go to how you get there — as you plan to travel more sustainably. Kelley Louise, the executive director and founder of Impact Travel Alliance, a nonprofit centered on informing travelers to help improve the world, told Insider that traveling sustainably takes practice and being an imperfect traveler is better than not trying. As Louise said, “It’s about asking, ‘How can you make little decisions that add up over time and have a positive impact on the world?'” If you’re looking for a place to start, here’s what the experts Insider spoke with recommend. Abbey Lossing for Insider Go off the beaten path Some of the experts Insider spoke with suggest skipping top tourist destinations and opting for under-the-radar spots. “By seeking out the less-visited destinations, you will be helping to spread the economic benefits of tourism more widely and helping to avoid the negative impacts that over-tourism has on local residents,” Georgina Davies — the communications manager for The Travel Foundation, a group that advocates for sustainable tourism — told Insider. Paloma Zapata agrees. The CEO of Sustainable Travel International — an organization that works with local governments, businesses, and nonprofits to provide sustainable travel opportunities — also recommends visiting a hidden gem. If you’re going to Greece, for instance, you could skip Mykonos and head to an island like Anafi or Ios with fewer tourists. Once you’ve picked your destination, Davies encourages travelers to visit the region’s national parks and protected areas. Often these places have entrance fees, which support conservation efforts. Choose a destination that embraces sustainability Jessica Blotter, CEO and cofounder of public benefit corporation Kind Travel, told Insider she looks for destinations with tourism boards that have a dedicated sustainable travel section on their website. She recommends avoiding areas where sustainable transportation and lodging are hard to find, and “where access to nature and the outdoors is limited.” Vacation during shoulder season Tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain without hordes of people around or exploring Niagara Falls in the winter isn’t just beneficial to travelers; experts say it also supports sustainability. Visiting destinations during shoulder seasons “spreads the benefits of tourism locally across the year and lightens the burden of over-tourism in popular destinations,” Francis said. His company, Responsible Travel, has a guide that outlines the best time to visit certain destinations.  Zapata added that you’re also more likely to have a stress-free and special vacation if you’re visiting when there are fewer crowds. “It could be even more enriching,” she said. “When you’re on a beach or on a sailboat and it’s just surrounded by masses of people, maybe that’s not the best experience.” Visit fewer places for longer One way to travel more responsibly is to visit fewer places for longer periods of time. For example, instead of spending a week in four European countries, plan a 10-day trip to one or two. “Fewer but longer trips mean fewer air miles, more money in local hands, and you’ll have a more relaxing trip, too,” Francis said. “If you can, keep shorter trips close to home or travel by land or sea.” He added that these modes of travel can be an adventure in themselves, and allow you to “see so much more of a destination.” If you must travel a long distance, Blotter recommends stretching the trip as much as possible to maximize your experience. “Booking multiple, long-haul trips per year is not sustainable or carbon-friendly,” she said. Abbey Lossing for Insider Evaluate the distance for the most sustainable way to get there The first step in deciding how to responsibly get to your destination is considering the number of people traveling and the distance you’re going. Besides biking and walking, trains are typically one of the most sustainable ways to travel, Zapata said. If your destination is accessible by train, consider that. If you’re debating whether it’s more sustainable to fly or drive, Zapata said it comes down to the distance. “A lot of times trains are going to be more energy and carbon efficient,” she said. “But when it comes to a car, there comes a moment when flying is actually more carbon efficient than driving when you’re talking about very long distances.” Calculators like the ones offered by the International Civil Aviation Organization and Environmental Defense Fund can help travelers map out the least carbon-intensive way to get from A to B. If you need to fly, opt for nonstop routes and travel in economy Flying will likely be the most unsustainable aspect of your trip. Aviation makes up about 2% of global carbon emissions and 80% of a vacation’s carbon footprint comes from the flight, according to National Geographic. Experts suggest thinking about how much you should fly in a year. For example, maybe you take one international flight a year and prioritize having the rest of your trips close to home, Louise said.  But no matter where you jet off to, experts recommend flying nonstop in economy. “When booking long-distance plane travel, always choose a direct flight with no layovers,” Blotter said. “Direct flights use less carbon dioxide than connecting flights.” Additionally, by flying in economy, as some of the experts Insider spoke with pointed out, you maximize the number of people a flight can carry by taking up less space. Ultimately, though, the best thing you can do is reduce your carbon footprint during your trip. Experts like Louise and Gregory Miller, the executive director of the international nonprofit Center for Responsible Travel, agree that carbon offsets act more like a Band-Aid than a solution to sustainable travel. But if they do decide to purchase carbon offsets, which reduce or remove emissions to compensate for those made during a trip, Miller suggests purchasing through a reliable, vetted program. Groups like Zapata’s Sustainable Travel say they invest people’s money into carbon-reducing projects centered on clean energy and biodiversity.  Abbey Lossing for Insider Pack light The simplest advice when it comes to being a sustainable packer is to pack less, Zapata said. “Travel light,” she said. “You don’t need 20 shoes to travel.” Blotter agrees and says that by packing lighter, you’ll reduce carbon emissions. That’s because the lighter the aircraft, train, car, or boat, the less energy is needed.  Louise added that by packing fewer items and using a carry-on, you’ll get through security faster and avoid the hassle of checking a bag. Pack reusable items Francis suggests adding the items you use at home to your packing list. That might include a reusable water bottle, a bag for shopping, and utensils to avoid plastic cutlery.   Louise acknowledges that it might not be feasible for every traveler to carry a reusable water bottle, so she urges travelers to consider what other meaningful swaps they could make. For example, Louise said she swapped liquid shampoo and conditioner for shampoo and conditioner bars a few vacations back. The bars are lighter than liquid soaps, which means they save carbon emissions during transportation. Plus, many are packaged in recyclable paper instead of plastic.   The switch became permanent in Louise’s daily life, she said, adding that it made traveling easier since she didn’t have to worry about leaks or liquids at airport security. “It’s a cool example of how we can look for more sustainable experiences that are also better travel experiences,” she said. “Plus it opens our eyes to new habits that can help us become more conscious consumers as well.” Pack brands you support If you’re doing some pre-vacation shopping, Louise recommends buying from brands that place sustainability at the forefront of their business. “If you’re supporting corporations and brands that are working on sustainability as well, then that’s going to move the needle and create change a lot quicker than we could as individuals,” she said. For tropical getaways, pack reef-safe sunscreen If you’re heading to Aruba or planning a diving trip in Belize, experts say travelers should ensure reef-safe sunscreen is on their packing lists. “Sunscreen can be very damaging to the environment and not everybody knows,” Zapata said.  Ingredients in everyday sunscreen can harm both coral reefs and local w...

The Pandemic Made Me Embrace My Alopecia I Ditched The Wigs After 17 Years Womens Health UK
The Pandemic Made Me Embrace My Alopecia I Ditched The Wigs After 17 Years Womens Health UK
‘The Pandemic Made Me Embrace My Alopecia – I Ditched The Wigs After 17 Years’ – Women’s Health UK https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-pandemic-made-me-embrace-my-alopecia-i-ditched-the-wigs-after-17-years-womens-health-uk/ The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) estimate that 100,000 people in the UK live with alopecia areata, an auto-immune disease in which the body attacks the hair follicles, causing baldness. As Alopecia Awareness Month rolls to a close, we hear from Laura Matthias, 31, who was diagnosed with the condition when she was at secondary school. She is a campaigner with Changing Faces UK and a volunteer with Alopecia UK, but next year she will be taking to the catwalk for London Fashion Week – something that she never thought would be possible when she was a terrified schoolgirl craving answers, and to simply fit in with her peers. Her catwalk booking is made even more impressive as it wasn’t until the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic that she finally found the confidence to leave home without a wig. Laura writes… Ironically, it was my hairdresser who first found a small bald patch at the back of my scalp when I was 13 years old. My mum had only recently gifted me some GHD hair straighteners, and I remember worrying if I had done something wrong when using them. Laura Mathias has finally found the confidence to leave home without a wig (c) Debbie Burrows My hairdresser told me not to worry, it was ‘normal’ to have areas of less hair but suggested to my mum that we go check it out with the doctor. I was young, so it’s hard to remember how I felt that day other than ANXIOUS looking at the faces of that hairdresser and my mum in the mirror, seeing their concern and then their attempt to smile and say it was going to be fine when they saw me watching them. ‘I was waking up to hair all over my pillow and felt all-consumed what was happening to me.’ When I went to the doctor to show him my bald patches, he said it was ‘probably’ an autoimmune condition called alopecia. The doctor told me to ‘try not to worry’, and that stress would make it worse. My parents were going through a messy divorce and I was a teenager at high school; worrying was part of my daily routine! Now, I was worried I was to blame for my hair falling out too. I look back at that diagnosis and wish the doctor had taken a more holistic approach. Why didn’t he consider how telling me, at such a young age, that my hair would ‘probably’ come back if I ‘calmed down’ would have a detrimental impact on my mental and physical health. I was waking up to hair all over my pillow and felt all-consumed what was happening to me. I was so embarrassed as my hair loss progressed that I stopped going to school. In fact, I stopped leaving the house altogether when I couldn’t hide it anymore. I couldn’t face how different I looked and completely withdrew for around six months. Aged 14, at the start of a new academic year, I forced myself back to school. After a week of trying to hide my hair loss with hairbands and sitting at the back of classes, I asked my hairdresser to shave my head and help me style a wig. I wore it every day, even though it aggravated the eczema on my scalp and was far too big for me. This hiding my hair loss went on for over 17 years until, in the pandemic, I decided I’d had enough. I started the journey to embrace my alopecia and share my story on social media (@RelightAlopecia) to build my confidence and in the hope of helping others who felt they have to hide their hair loss from the world. ‘Now, aged 31, I can leave my house without my wig and exist as a happy, healthy, bald woman.’ My confidence isn’t consistent by any means, whose is? I still have days where I want to reach for the wig. But now, aged 31, I can leave my house without it and exist as a happy, healthy, bald woman. That is something I NEVER thought I would be able to do. I haven’t felt confident to rock the bald at a wedding or ‘dress up’ event yet but I think that’s OK. Wigs can be fun, I just want to choose when I wear them, not feel I have to as it’s the only acceptable way to present in public. Bald can be beautiful too! So many people experience hair loss, for many different reasons, but it can be hard to get a formal diagnosis. I think we need to work with brands and publications to shift the shame so we can be honest about the struggle of living with thinning or no hair. ‘I stopped going to school. In fact, I stopped leaving the house altogether.’ I would much rather engage with a brand showcasing inspirational and real people, than ‘aspirational’ content any day. I don’t want anyone else out there to ever feel ashamed of looking different just because society has told us we should look a certain way. The best way to tackle this is for brands to lead the change and show all people, hair or not. People don’t need to be fixed, products are available to elevate and assist us in loving ourselves, not fixing us. Laura wants brands to help women feel their best, not want to look different Debbie Burrows This is my advice for others experiencing alopecia There is no right way to deal with alopecia. If you want to wear wigs, if you want to tattoo your scalp, whatever you want to do – you do you! Take people’s opinions with a pinch of salt! If you choose to confide in friends about your hair loss, you may find they are full of advice and platitudes intended to make you feel better. I’ve lost count of the number of times someone has said to me: ‘It’s just hair, at least you can save money on hairdressers.’ People mean well, but their opinion is often unfounded and unwelcome. How YOU feel about YOU is all that matters. Learn to love yourself – showing yourself, and your body, kindness is still one of the most radical things I think we can do in a world bombarding us with ‘solutions’ to the long list of ‘trouble areas’ on a woman’s body. I make a conscious effort every day to try and be kinder about who I am and how I look.
