New York Man Faces 25 Years In Prison For Bitcoin Money Laundering And Narcotics Scheme – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/new-york-man-faces-25-years-in-prison-for-bitcoin-money-laundering-and-narcotics-scheme-cryptonews/ Source: Unsplash A New York man is facing 25 years in prison, after being convicted by a federal jury in Brooklyn of money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. The unlicensed business the man was accused of operating was part of a scheme to launder money earned in bitcoin (BTC) from illegal drug trafficking, a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York said. The convicted man was identified as 50-year-old Mustafa Goklu, also known as “Mustangy.” The verdict followed a four-day trial in New York, and Goklu now faces a prison sentence of 25 years. According to Breon Peace, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Goklu’s business offered customers the ability to launder proceeds from various criminal activities, while at the same time remaining anonymous and “conceal where their Bitcoin was coming from […].” “With today’s verdict, Goklu’s illicit business of converting money from one form to another without a required license has been shut down and the defendant has been convicted for his crimes,” Peace said. He went on to thank the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Division for “outstanding investigative work on the case.” Goklu’s arrest came after undercover law enforcement agents first noticed an advertisement posted on the peer-to-peer bitcoin trading platform LocalBitcoins.com where a user named “Mustangy” offered to purchase up to $99,999 worth of BTC. The undercover agents then proceeded to contact “Mustangy,” whose real name was Mustafa Goklu, and later met with him in person to sell bitcoin for cash. Per the press release, the undercover agents reportedly indicated “on multiple occasions” that the source of the bitcoin they were selling was drug trafficking, but Goklu still completed the trade as agreed. In total, Goklu and the undercover agents met on seven occasions over a nine-month period, which ended with Goklu’s arrest in April 2019.

Oregon Coast – Oregon Coast Beach Connection https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/the-lil-cannon-beach-cottage-that-could-whimsical-yet-historic-rental-on-n-oregon-coast-oregon-coast-beach-connection/ The Lil’ Cannon Beach Cottage That Could: Whimsical Yet Historic Rental on N. Oregon Coast Published 10/17/22 at 5:54 PM By Oregon Coast Beach Connection staff (Cannon Beach, Oregon) – Have you ever dreamed of a white picket fence and a historic home-away-from-home on the Oregon coast? Say, in some much-revered coastal burgh as Cannon Beach? Are you hankerin’ for a bit of history? Does a heaping helping of times-gone-by along with sleek, modern conveniences in a quiet spot where you can the waves sound appealing? What about a robustly-shaded yellow door? OK, that’s random. But it works in this scenario, because just this vibe exists in the north Oregon coast town with a little place called Lil Bird Cottage. It’s a diminutive vacation rental that’s big on captivating, and just close enough to the beach to hear the lull of the ocean. Offered up by Beachcomber Vacation Homes in the lovely little town, the wee charming elder statesman on the street sleeps four and gleefully allows your furry friend to join in (for a fee). Cannon Beach (photo copyright Oregon Coast Beach Connection) Historic homes in Cannon Beach are a special breed, enough to create a tour of them each fall. They range from stately and almost sprawling to smaller sweet talkers like this one, whispering intriguing tales of the town’s early days when it was called Ecola (but rather embarrassingly had to change because townfolk’s mail bundles kept going to a little town named Eola near Salem). Or perhaps those walls would tell you tales of back when CB had a natatorim (a heated salt water bath) – or maybe even the chilling tales of Cannon Beach’s Bandage Man. Lil Bird Cottage is rich in time travel vibes at first glance, even slightly whimsical, with the vine-covered white gate. That’s only a brief taste, however, as one of the cottage’s chief attractions is one heckuva of a lush garden. Spring almost springs eternal here, with major blooms when in-season and plenty of greens hanging out the rest of the year. That characteristic and eye-catching weathered wood that typifies this north Oregon coast town stands out quickly – and then there’s the wild, yellow, ebullient door. Spry, bold and definitely a head-turner, it’s a nifty addition and playful contrast to the wood. Spoiler alert: there’s another on the opposite side of the building. There, the backyard is a generous chunk of manicured lawn, a feature which your furbaby will love. Zoomies are even better on the Oregon coast, dogs say (or at least they would, if they could). Lil Bird Cottage sits on a quiet spot on the cusp of midtown and on the edges of downtown, making it close walking distance to the excellent grub found in both areas, as well as Cannon Beach’s bursting-at-the-seams art scene. That puts the cottage not too far from famed Haystack Rock, and only a bit of a distance to the slightly less-trodden sands of the northern edges of town. Inside, the cottage boasts details with a definite old-timey slant but in sleek, modern paint, giving it subtle yet unmistakable historic vibes. You wonder what these walls saw. Sons returning home from World War II? The end of Prohibition? Families around the dinner table arguing over Flower Power in the ’60s? There’s plenty of wi-fi, so you’re firmly grounded in all the modern necessities, like binging the new Interview With A Vampire series or Law & Order in between jaunts to the waves. A gas fireplace graces the living room, and the two bedrooms are packed with plenty of upbeat colors and snazzy stylings. There’s one bathroom with a shower and another with a claw-foot bathtub. Outdoors, a barbecue on the back deck caps off that richly-green lawn. All of these goodies are found through Beachcomber Vacation Homes, 503-436-4500. Six Steps To Create An Effective Community Health Program UrbanMatter
Six Steps To Create An Effective Community Health Program UrbanMatter
Six Steps To Create An Effective Community Health Program – UrbanMatter https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/six-steps-to-create-an-effective-community-health-program-urbanmatter/ In recent years, the number of people suffering from chronic diseases has increased alarmingly. This has led to a growing need for community health programs promoting healthy living and preventing chronic diseases. The global burden of chronic disease is now estimated at 38% of all deaths. More than three-quarters of these occur in low- and middle-income countries. A community health program is an organized effort by a government, non-governmental organization, or group of citizens to improve the health of a defined group of people. An effective community health program strives to address the health needs of its target population through a comprehensive and coordinated approach. It should be based on thorough needs assessment and be informed by the latest evidence on effective interventions. Here are six steps to creating an effective community health program: Conduct a needs assessment The first step in creating an effective community health program is to conduct a needs assessment to identify the health needs of the target population. It can happen through various methods, including surveys, focus groups, and interviews with key informants. The needs assessment should consider health’s social, economic, and environmental determinants. Also, consider the availability of resources, including human and financial resources. In addition, be sure to consult with relevant stakeholders, such as community leaders, healthcare providers, and local officials. Professionals with experience in conducting needs assessments can provide valuable guidance.  Aspiring candidates can enroll in online public health degree programs to learn more about conducting needs assessments. For instance, the DrPH online provides students with the skills and knowledge to assess population health needs effectively.  Set realistic goals and objectives Based on the needs assessment, the next step is to set realistic goals and objectives for the program. The goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. They should also be aligned with the resources available and the capacities of the implementing organization. As you may know, setting unrealistic goals can lead to disappointment and can undermine the program’s credibility. Indeed, it is important to set ambitious yet achievable goals to rally people around the program and generate support for it. However, if the goals are too ambitious, they may not be realistic and could jeopardize the program’s success. Moreover, the goals and objectives should be reviewed and updated regularly to remain relevant. Develop an evidence-based intervention The third step is to develop an evidence-based intervention. To do this, you will need to identify the risk factors for the health problems you are trying to address. Then, select the interventions that are effective in addressing these risk factors. Be sure to consider the target population‘s local context and preferences. In addition, make sure that the interventions are feasible and affordable. And finally, ensure that there is adequate capacity to implement the interventions. However, it is essential to note that evidence-based interventions alone are insufficient. The intervention must also be tailored to the needs of the target population. Another reason an evidence-based approach is necessary is that it helps secure funding for the program. Indeed, donors are more likely to support a program with a sound evidence base. Create a program plan The fourth step is to create a program plan that outlines how the program will be implemented. The program plan should include a detailed description of the activities, timelines, resources, and personnel involved. It should also specify the roles and responsibilities of each individual and organization involved in the program. The program plan should be flexible to allow for adjustments based on the evolving needs of the target population. In addition, the program plan should be reviewed and updated regularly. Also, consult with relevant stakeholders when developing the program plan. However, remember that the program plan is not set in stone and should be adapted as needed. Therefore, be sure to build in flexibility and allow for adjustments. Indeed, the program plan should be viewed as a living document updated as the program evolves. Most importantly, the program plan should be designed to meet the specific needs of the target population. Hence, it is crucial to involve the target population in the planning process. Implement the program The fifth step is to implement the program. You will need to mobilize the necessary resources and personnel to do this. Make sure that everyone involved understands their roles and responsibilities. Also, monitor the program’s progress and assess its impact. Be sure to document the lessons learned during implementation. These lessons can be used to improve the program in the future. In addition, consult with relevant stakeholders during implementation to get their feedback. And finally, make sure to adjust the program as needed. The most important thing is to be flexible and adapt the program based on the needs of the target population. Evaluate the program The final step is to evaluate the program. Evaluation is vital to determine the program’s effectiveness and to improve its future design. There are different types of evaluation, such as impact evaluation, process evaluation, and output evaluation. Be sure to consult with relevant stakeholders and consider the resources and time available when planning the evaluation. And finally, use the results to improve the program. Once you have completed these six steps, you will have created an effective community health program. However, it is essential to note that this is an iterative process. Indeed, you will need to review and update the program regularly to ensure that it remains relevant and practical.  Final Words Creating an effective community health program requires careful planning and execution. By following the steps outlined in this article, you will be on your way to developing a successful program. However, it is vital to note that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to community health. So, be sure to tailor the program to the needs of the target population. Also, consult with relevant stakeholders throughout the planning and implementation process. And finally, use the results of the evaluation to improve the program. By doing so, you will be well on your way to creating an effective community health program.

Yankees Vs. The winner will take on the Houston Astros in the ALCS. The loser goes home. Here’s how you can watch Game 5. Due to rain in New York, however, the start of Game 5 has been delayed. A rescheduled time for first pitch has not yet been announced, and it’s possible the game is postponed until Tuesday. MLB makes all weather-related decisions in the postseason and the league has been meeting every hour or so since 6 p.m. ET. First pitch was originally scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET.  “I think everybody was on the same page when we spoke,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said about MLB’s afternoon calls with the two teams. “As long as we can play the game and not have it look like it’s going to get interrupted and have that force a little bit of an outcome, (we’d) like to play.” Game 2 of the ALDS was postponed due to rain, forcing the Yankees and Guardians to play Games 2-5 on four consecutive days. From CBS News New York: There is rain in the forecast for ALDS Game 5. CBS News New York In the event Game 5 is postponed, it would be played Tuesday, during what is currently a scheduled off-day between the ALDS and ALCS. That could very well be an afternoon game since the winner has to travel to Houston for Game 1 of the ALCS on Wednesday. The Yankees will start righty Jameson Taillon (14-5, 3.91 ERA) in Game 5. The Guardians will counter with righty Aaron Civale (5-6, 4.92 ERA). Both starters are expected to be on a short leash. Here’s how each team’s bullpen is set up for Game 5.

5G Already Paving For Metaverse The Nation Newspaper – The Nation Newspaper https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/5g-already-paving-for-metaverse-the-nation-newspaper-the-nation-newspaper/ As 5G uptake in many parts of the world bridges the milestone from early adopters to mass adoption, major new Ericsson research – the industry’s largest global study of its kind to date – underlines consumers’ growing commitment to 5G and their expectations on next-generation uses cases. Called 5G: The Next Wave, the Ericsson ConsumerLab report addresses the impact 5G has had on early adopter consumers since launching in various countries, as well as gauging the intention of non-5G subscribers to take up the technology – and their related expectations. The report forecasts that at least 30 per cent of smartphone users intend to take up a 5G subscription within the next year. The mix of Ericsson tracking data covering 5G launches since 2019, and the new consumer survey, has enabled Ericsson ConsumerLab to identify six key trends impacting the next wave of 5G adoption. The report covers the behavioral changes triggered by the bundling of digital services into 5G plans by communications service providers – particularly the increased use of enhanced video and augmented reality (AR) apps. The report also addresses the speed of mainstream 5G adoption, whether consumer demands are being met, and 5G-related changes in smartphone behaviour – and their impact on network traffic. More than 49,000 consumers in 37 countries were interviewed in the research – the largest global 5G-related consumer survey in the industry to date and the largest consumer survey conducted by Ericsson on any topic. The survey scope is representative of the opinions of about 1.7 billion consumers worldwide, including 430 million 5G subscribers. Jasmeet Singh Sethi, Head of Ericsson ConsumerLab, said: ”The scale of the research gives us an authentic insight into consumers’ views and attitudes to 5G. The report shows that the next wave of potential 5G users have different expectations from the technology compared to early adopters. Overall, consumers see engaging with 5G as an essential part of their future lifestyles. “It is interesting to note that 5G is emerging as an important enabler for early adopters to embrace metaverse-related services, such as socialising, playing and buying digital items in interactive 3D virtual gaming platforms. The amount of time spent on augmented reality apps by 5G users has also doubled over the past two years, compared to 4G users.” Read Also: 5G technology: Opportunities and challenges The report forecasts that 5G consumers with experience of using extended reality (XR) functionality are likely to be the first to embrace future devices as they are more positive about the potential of mixed-reality glasses. Half of 5G users who already use XR-related services weekly think that AR apps will move from smartphones to XR headsets within the next two years, compared to one-third of 4G consumer who hold this view. 5G – the Next Wave Report: Six key trends 5G adoption to be inflation resilient: At least 510 million consumers across 37 markets are likely to take up 5G in 2023. The demanding next wave of users: The next wave of 5G users have high expectations on 5G performance, especially network coverage, compared to early adopters — who care about new innovative services enabled by 5G. Perceived 5G availability is emerging as the new satisfaction benchmark among consumers. Geographical coverage, indoor/outdoor coverage, and congregation hot-spot coverage are more important to building a user perception than population coverage. 5G is pushing up usage of enhanced video and augmented reality. Over the past two years, time spent on AR apps by 5G users has doubled to two hours per week. 5G monetization models are expected to evolve: Six in 10 consumers expect 5G offerings to move beyond more data volume and speeds to on-demand tailored network capabilities for specific needs. 5G adoption is setting the path to the metaverse. 5G users on average are already spending one hour more per-week in metaverse-related services than 4G users. They also expect two hours of more video content will be consumed weekly on mobile devices, 1.5 hours of which will be on AR/VR glasses by 2025

Cadillac Celestiq First Look: A Super-Luxury $300k Electric Car Built Just For You SlashGear
Cadillac Celestiq First Look: A Super-Luxury $300k Electric Car Built Just For You SlashGear
Cadillac Celestiq First Look: A Super-Luxury $300k Electric Car Built Just For You – SlashGear https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/cadillac-celestiq-first-look-a-super-luxury-300k-electric-car-built-just-for-you-slashgear/ Chris Davies/SlashGear The Cadillac Celestiq has been a long time coming. Not just a nod back to, but a wholesale reclaiming of the automaker’s coachbuilding talents, it’s the pinnacle of profligacy from a car-maker that has been accused of forgetting the reality of true luxury in recent years. Because, while leather, wood, and gadgets may wow by themselves, nothing quite beats exclusivity. Chris Davies/SlashGear Cadillac, like just about every automaker, has flirted with limited editions before now, but the Celestiq — pronounced, incidentally, “Celestick” so as to rhyme with Lyriq — elevates that to new levels. “It’s handcrafted, it’s built here in our technical center in Warren, Michigan,” Rory Harvey, Vice President of Global Cadillac, says of the astonishingly long fastback sedan. Each will be one-of-one. Each will also be — not only in Cadillac terms but car terms more generally — fabulously expensive. Celestiq ownership, if you’re approved to purchase one, will start in the low $300,000’s, according to the automaker. That, though, is for a “blank canvas” car, according to Harvey, and the price is expected to spiral accordingly as potential owners explore the possibilities. The most epic Cadillac ever Chris Davies/SlashGear Mass production has been responsible for a lot of things in transportation, not least bringing car ownership to a level where many can afford it, but the Celestiq takes the exact opposite approach. Cadillac will build fewer than two cars per day, and no more than six being produced at any one time, with total production for each vehicle from order to delivery expected to take months depending on just how much customization is involved. Chris Davies/SlashGear It’s that which Cadillac is hoping will catch on. The automaker would be mightily disappointed if you took home a Celistiq that looks just like this blue example, built to showcase the production version of the original concept. Not because it’s disappointed with how it looks and feels, but because the whole point of the exercise is to make something nobody else has. Indeed, the Celestiq brief was to “develop the most epic Cadillac ever,” according to Brandon Vivian, executive chief engineer at the automaker. Ultium meets 3D printing Chris Davies/SlashGear That has involved combining craftspeople with cutting-edge manufacturing processes, and General Motors’ Ultium electric platform underneath. Celestiq is a full EV, with an estimated 600 horsepower, 640 lb-ft of torque, and — despite its vast dimensions, almost as long as an Escalade SUV — capable of 0-60 mph in an estimated 3.8 seconds. Chris Davies/SlashGear They’re wild numbers, but not as wild as how complex each car will be to build. 115 of the parts use additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, the broadest application in GM so far. The steering wheel, for instance, is entirely 3D printed, and the biggest such metal piece put into production so far. The window switches, grab handles, and other structural pieces are also made in the same way. Mega castings, meanwhile, allow for six vast cast aluminum components for the underbid and the shock towers. Then there’s Flex Fabrication — a sheet-folding process that Cadillac describes as “akin to metallic origami” — with more than 300 such pieces through the EV. Bespoke is the name of the Celestiq game Chris Davies/SlashGear Cadillac has been extreme in avoiding plastic wherever it can, particularly in the interior. All of the metal is real metal; its finish and even its core design can be modified. There’ll be a palette of paint options, but if you want to match your Celestiq to your favorite lipstick or your dog’s eyes, Cadillac will do that too. Chris Davies/SlashGear There’ll be a design hub at GM’s Warren center, with a craft center to showcase some possibilities, but the Cadillac team will be headed out on the road to meet with customers where they are, too. If owners want to come to watch their car being built from time to time, they can; or, they can track the progress via their dedicated concierge. Chris Davies/SlashGear The limitations, really, come down to making sure the car still satisfies safety regulations. Beyond that, you get the sense that Cadillac is really hoping its customers rise to the challenge and test what’s possible. “We’d love you to be extreme,” Michael Simcoe, VP of Global Design, says. 600 horsepower and 300 miles of range Chris Davies/SlashGear For its part, Cadillac hasn’t left the Celestiq wanting when it comes to performance or platform. It’s the same core Ultium architecture as we’ve seen used in the automaker’s own Lyriq electric SUV — though Celestiq’s design actually predates Lyriq — with a bespoke arrangement that repositions the battery cells so as to allow the whole car to be lower. The 5.51-meter-long car is expected to drive more than 300 miles on a charge of its 111 kWh battery, and it’ll support 190 kW DC fast charging for adding around 78 miles of range in 10 minutes. Chris Davies/SlashGear There’s also Active Roll Control — a Cadillac-first — and adaptive air suspension, along with the latest iteration of Magnetic Ride Control 4.0. Active rear steering and 5-link front and rear suspension are standard, too, along with variable ratio front steering. Huge, 23-inch forged aluminum wheels and dual-motor all-wheel drive are also standard. So, too, will be Ultra Cruise, GM’s upcoming iteration on Super Cruise that — eventually — the company says will be able to do door-to-door hands-off semi-autonomous driving in 95% of all situations. The Celestiq will have all the hardware for Ultra Cruise installed, though the functionality will be rolled out as a series of over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Exactly what the EV will be able to do at launch is unclear, though the same feature set of Enhanced Super Cruise right now seems likely. Lashings of tech in a customizable cabin Chris Davies/SlashGear The rest of the Celestiq’s tech is a whole lot more noticeable. There are 5 high-definition displays in the cabin, including a 55-inch pillar-to-pillar screen — in fact two panels under a single sheet of glass — spanning the whole dashboard. Front and rear command centers handle things like comfort and seat settings, along with opening and closing the power doors. Finally, there are two 12.6-inch rear displays for the twin back seats. Despite the scale, Celestiq is resolutely a four-seater experience. Chris Davies/SlashGear The infotainment system is based on Google’s software, with things like the Google Assistant, Maps, and Play store built in. There’s also a 38-speaker AKG audio system with 1,000 watts and next-gen active noise cancellation, plus three exterior speakers for Cadillac’s first exterior sound system. 7mm-thick acoustic laminated glass — with antennas cunningly embedded inside — make sure exterior noise is kept at a distance. Chris Davies/SlashGear So, too, is an advanced HVAC system, with the Gentherm ClimateSense promising 33 unique microclimate devices for each occupant to tailor how their seat heats and cools. That includes neck scarf vents for the front and rear seats, plus heated armrests and pads, and motorized vents. Not only is the end result more precisely controlled, Cadillac says, but it’s actually more efficient than a regular climate control system. Sweating the details, big and small Chris Davies/SlashGear Look up, and you see what Cadillac claims is the largest piece of automotive-grade glass in the world. The Celestiq’s enormous panoramic roof is actually made of smart glass, with four separate quadrants that can individuals be adjusted from under 1% to 20% tint. It has infrared reflective and low-emissivity coatings, to help keep the cabin cool. Chris Davies/SlashGear Impressively, certainly, but it’s some of the detailing which stands out as being a little more charming, somehow. The trio of car silhouettes on the edge of the central console lid, for example, that puts the Celestiq in line with some of its bespoke forebears is a neat touch. Chris Davies/SlashGear Despite the “one of one” pitch, meanwhile, Cadillac insists that Celestiq won’t be entirely separate from the rest of its line-up; or, at least, that the techniques and processes involved won’t be. The team working on the big EV is the same that delivered sedans like the CT6, CT5, and CT4, and will be exploring how elements in Celestiq can be brought to mass production. “We will carry this technology forward,” Vivian promises. Finally, a halo car Cadillac can aspire to Chris Davies/SlashGear All the same, it seems fairly unlikely that any of us will encounter a Celestiq in the wild all that often. Cadillac isn’t intentionally limiting production of the car, counting on its manufacturing capabilities and the general appetite for such an EV to do that instead, and nor will it control allocations for different regions around the world. Interest has already been significant, though, the automaker says, and production is expected to begin in December 2023. Chris Davies/SlashGear It’s not unreasonable to say that Cadillac has felt the pinch in recent years, between established luxury players and new upstarts in the category. While models like the CT5-V Blackwing have certainly not stinted on performance, just whether they’ve also managed to attain the true prestige of an authentic luxury vehicle is questionable. Celestiq won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it certainly leaves no room for doubting where Cadillac sees its priorities. “What all brands need is a halo, you need to have a North Star that defines a brand,” Michael Simcoe, VP of Global Design, says. “In many ways now, Celestiq is Cadillac.”

Crypto Won’t See Bull-Run Anytime Soon, This Expert Explains Why – NewsBTC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-wont-see-bull-run-anytime-soon-this-expert-explains-why-newsbtc/ The crypto market is stuck in a tight range as larger cryptocurrencies are unable to break above key levels of resistance. The sector has been mostly inclined to the downside since September when Ethereum completed “The Merge”. At the time of writing, Bitcoin (BTC) trades at $19,500 with a 2% profit in the last 24 hours while Ethereum records a 3% profit over the same period. Other cryptocurrencies follow a similar trajectory during today’s trading session with XRP and Cardano amongst the worst-performing assets in the sector. BTC’s price moving sideways on the daily chart. Source: BTCUSDT Tradingview Crypto And Global Markets Close To A Bottom, But Far From A Bull The successful completion of “The Merge” left the crypto market without a narrative of its own. Thus, the nascent asset class has been moving in tandem with traditional equities and major indexes. Macroeconomic forces have been dominating the price action in risk-on assets, most of crypto and equities, as the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) rushes to slow down inflation. The financial institution has been hiking interest rates unleashing a bear market that has rippled across the financial world. In this situation, every market participant wants to know when crypto will finally bottom out. In order for this to happen, equities must find a bottom first, and according to Jurrien Timmer, Director of Macro for Fidelity, this might be close to happening. Via his official Twitter handle, Timmer compared the current situation with the 1940 to 1947 inflationary periods in the United States. The North American country was going through a period of high inflation after World War II. Timmer referred to this situation as a fiscal/monetary cocktail, the country was recovering from a major conflict with most of the world in ruins, still hurting from the massive expending and low resources. At that time, the S&P 500 saw a 30% decline. Right now, this index is approaching those lows as it follows a similar trajectory. As seen in the chart below, the S&P 500 proceeded to move sideways for multiple years as inflation peaked at 19.6%. In comparison, today’s inflation stood at 8.9% at its highest month-to-month metric. Timmer said: The 1946-49 bear market had a nominal decline of 30% and a real decline of 46% (amid 20% inflation). It was entirely a driven by valuations. The analog suggests we are near the bottom, but a long way from the next bull. Source: Jurrien Timmer via Twitter Other experts expect a similar scenario for Bitcoin and the crypto market. This might be positive news for long-term holders looking to accumulate at current levels, but not for those betting on a new bull run in 2022 or even 2023.

U.S. FAA Says Some Boeing 737 MAX 7 Submissions Incomplete, Need Review – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-faa-says-some-boeing-737-max-7-submissions-incomplete-need-review-reuters/ WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told Boeing Co (BA.N) that some key documents submitted as part of the agency’s ongoing certification review of the 737 MAX 7 are incomplete and others need a reassessment by the U.S. planemaker. In an Oct. 12 letter to Boeing from FAA official Ian Won seen by Reuters, the agency asked Boeing to reassess some assertions that hazards classified as catastrophic “do not contain human factors assumptions.” The FAA also said it was unable to complete some reviews of Boeing submissions “due to missing and incomplete information regarding human factors assumptions in catastrophic hazard conditions.” The new letter intensifies concerns about the company’s timeline for beginning deliveries of the smaller variant of the best-selling MAX. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Boeing faces a late December deadline for the FAA to certify the MAX 7 and MAX 10 or it must meet new modern cockpit alerting standards that could significantly delay the airplanes unless the company receives a waiver from Congress. The requirements were approved by Congress in late 2020 as part of FAA certification reforms after two fatal 737 MAX crashes killed 346 people and led to the bestselling plane’s 20-month grounding. Reuters first reported on Oct. 3 Boeing does not anticipate winning approval for the MAX 10 before next summer, citing an FAA sent to Congress. Boeing said in a statement Monday it “is focused on meeting all regulatory requirements to certify the 737-7 and safety remains the driving factor in this effort.” Certifications of planes require extensive paperwork submissions and detailed review of safety assessments by the FAA. In a Sept. 19 letter to Boeing, the FAA expressed concerns that the planemaker would not be able to win certification for the MAX 7 this year. Boeing must get approval for the MAX 7 first as the MAX 10 approval is contingent on some MAX 7 documentation, Boeing Chief Executive Dave Calhoun said last month. The planemaker added it will “continue to prioritize being thorough and transparent in our documentation and interactions with the FAA.” Human factors analyses refer to how pilots respond to cockpit emergencies. The FAA letter said Boeing must as part of its review assure the agency “that those safety assessments do not contain human factors assumptions” and if there are others it must identify them and submit them for review. A December 2020 Senate report into the MAX concluded the FAA and Boeing “had established a pre-determined outcome to reaffirm a long-held human factor assumption related to pilot reaction time … It appears, in this instance, FAA and Boeing were attempting to cover up important information that may have contributed to the 737 MAX tragedies.” The Wall Street Journal reported the letter earlier. Elderly Army Veteran Critically Injured By 2 Hit & Run Drivers; Children Plead For Justice – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/elderly-army-veteran-critically-injured-by-2-hit-children-plead-for-justice-nbc-5-dallas-fort-worth/ Lewisville Police need the public’s help to find one of two drivers who critically injured an elderly man in a double hit-and-run crash. It happened last Wednesday night along the 300 Block of Lake Park Road. A neighbor’s home surveillance camera captured the crash. MT Daniels is a Vietnam veteran, a great-grandfather and an avid fisherman who moved to Lewisville to be closer to his kids and the lake. Last week, the 73-year-old’s life was nearly taken by not one, but two hit-and-run drivers. “I’m heartbroken. I’m angry,” said daughter Kiki Purvis about the drivers. “You hit my dad. You went home. You laid down. You got in your bed and you got up the next day and the next day. I don’t know what kind of person you are.” Daniels was walking home from the store at around 10 p.m. on Oct. 12, according to family. Lewisville PD Photograph of hit & run driver still sought by Lewisville Police. He was pushing his wheelchair for stability as he crossed Lake Park Road. Daniels did not use the crosswalk with flashing lights but crossed underneath a lit light post nearby. Local The latest news from around North Texas. As Daniels neared the sidewalk, a dark-colored car slammed into him with such force his wheelchair went rolling away, according to a home surveillance video provided to NBC 5 by a woman who lives nearby. The video shows the driver stop momentarily and then speeding away. The surveillance video shows two cars in both directions stopping to help. But then a second car ran over Daniels before also fleeing the scene. Lewisville PD “They had run him over to where they had to back up and literally go around,” said son Avron Daniels. On Monday, Lewisville police announced they have identified the driver of the second vehicle, blue in color, to hit Daniels. Detectives have spoken with the driver though charges have not been filed, according to LPD spokesman Matt Martucci. Police are still looking for the first driver that hit Daniels. Lewisville Police say detectives have had difficulty confirming the color of the car but believe it may be dark gray. Daniels suffered critical injuries including a broken leg, broken nose, a brain bleed and several cuts and road rash injuries. He is being treated at Medical City McKinney. Purvis says her father has a long road to recovery, including another procedure, and can’t remember the crash. She is expressing gratitude to the drivers who did stop and render aid, especially one man who answered her phone call. “I would like to talk to him, thank him for standing there while my dad laid there unconscious,” she said. The siblings say they will be their father’s voice, ensuring both drivers face justice for not stopping and rendering aid. “We just want justice,” said Daniels. “Anyone who has answers, anything, to come forward. Help us on this.” “Please put yourself in our shoes. I wouldn’t want this on anybody,” added Purvis. Anyone with information on the other vehicle is encouraged to contact Lewisville Police Department Investigator T. Thomas at 972.219.3694 or tthomas@cityoflewisville.com.

Credit Suisse Places U.S. Asset Management Arm For Sale – Source – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/credit-suisse-places-u-s-asset-management-arm-for-sale-source-reuters/ Oct 17 (Reuters) – Credit Suisse Group AG (CSGN.S) recently launched a process that could see its U.S. asset management arm sold, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday, as the troubled Swiss bank seeks to reshape its business after multiple scandals. JSU Receives Grant For Kidney Disease Project – WJTV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/jsu-receives-grant-for-kidney-disease-project-wjtv/ JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson State University College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation has been awarded a $162,230 grant. The grant is for a 20-month partnership with the Mississippi Kidney Foundation, the Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) and the Office of Preventive Health and Health Equity, and the Health Equity Coalition of Mississippi. According to JSU officials, the collaboration will launch the statewide project “Advancing Health Equity in Chronic Kidney Disease: Changing the Narrative to Serve Mississippi’s Most Equitable Populations.” “We want to drive two things, student success and health equity across the state of Mississippi, and that’s what we’ve done here as we partner with the MS Kidney Foundation,” explained James Robinson Ph.D., chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.  Funds will finance travel to nine communities across the state for meetings with schools, health departments, and high school athletic events to promote healthy eating and education for kidney disease prevention. Robinson said this partnership was formed in alignment with the university’s strategic plan JSU Elevate, which includes a goal for JSU to become an R1 institution over the next five years. For the next 20 months, the collaborative efforts will increase awareness about health equity and kidney disease, conduct research and develop long-lasting partnerships with various communities statewide. The MS Kidney Foundation anticipates that the research conducted will accurately depict the number of kidney patients in the state. “That’s one of the things we struggled with finding when we began the research for this project,” said T.J. Mayfield, executive director of the Mississippi Kidney Foundation. “We’re trying to find out how many people who’ve had kidney failure and those on or at risk of dialysis. We haven’t had those numbers in Mississippi for a number of years.”  In addition to research, the project’s goal is also to promote a healthy lifestyle change throughout the state. The grassroots effort will focus on educating Mississippians about the importance of nutritional, physical and mental wellness. According to the Mississippi Kidney Foundation, Mississippi ranks among the top in the nation in incidences of kidney disease.

A New Type Of Religion: What Drives Sports Fandom? – KPBS https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/a-new-type-of-religion-what-drives-sports-fandom-kpbs/ San Diego sports fans were pinching themselves after a magical sports weekend that saw playoff victories for both the San Diego Padres and the San Diego Wave Fútbol Club. With such fanfare, it is hard to ignore the influence sports have in our culture today. “We consume it because it brings us together, it gives us a vessel for community, at a time when people are desperate for such things,” said Michael Serazio, professor of communication at Boston College and author of the book “The Power of Sports: Media and Spectacle in American Culture.” Serazio argues that sports fill a void left, at least in part, by a move away from organized religion in modern life. “At this point, there’s about 70 million Americans who don’t identify with any particular institutionalized religion. And I would argue that sports is filling that vacuum, to some degree,” Serazio said. “Sports gives people the language of religion. You use terms like ‘you gotta believe’ or ‘keep faith’, things like that.” “It provides people with experiences of transcendence,” he added. For Serazio himself, sports has also served as an anchor to his childhood home of San Diego, even as he now lives thousands of miles away on the East Coast. “It becomes this kind of tether to the identity and community that I grew up with,” he said. “Those are really important things to hold onto, especially in our kind of modern, alienating, lonely world. Serazio joined Midday Edition Monday to talk about what makes sports so important in today’s culture.

Ethereum Co-Founder Joe Lubin: Todays Metaverse Is Internet Circa 1994 But The Masses Are Coming Decrypt
Ethereum Co-Founder Joe Lubin: Today’s Metaverse Is Internet Circa 1994, But The Masses Are Coming – Decrypt https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/ethereum-co-founder-joe-lubin-todays-metaverse-is-internet-circa-1994-but-the-masses-are-coming-decrypt/ Joe Lubin, the Ethereum co-founder and CEO of crypto software giant ConsenSys, is confident that the metaverse will one day encompass the full human experience. But he’s equally confident that day is still years away.  “I think [using the metaverse today] is a little bit like logging on to the internet in 1994,” Lubin told Decrypt in an exclusive video interview earlier this month. “Where you would dial the internet, and I used to go get a coffee and breakfast and then I’d come back, and my email would be downloaded.” Though Lubin acknowledges that the user experience currently offered by metaverse projects is comparably clunky, he’s adamant that the metaverse—a future, immersive version of the internet—will become as ubiquitous as email. “The experience of being in web3 isn’t as compelling as it will be pretty soon,” Lubin said. “That’s when the masses will be there.” The ConsenSys CEO’s comments come during a period of unprecedented interest in the metaverse from some of the most powerful companies in the world. Meta, formerly Facebook, has fully reoriented its efforts towards dominating the metaverse; Apple and Disney are quietly exploring the space; even traditional brick-and-mortar brands like WalMart are diving in, head-first.  Despite forays into virtual worlds by mega-corporations and web3-native companies alike, however, the metaverse still has yet to catch on as the accessible, entertaining, and smooth-functioning virtual haven it was initially promised to be. For example, despite going all-in on the metaverse, Meta has only staggering losses in the tens of billions to show for its work. A report surfaced earlier this month that the division responsible for building Meta’s virtual reality platform, Horizon Worlds, has entered a ‘quality lockdown’ until the end of the year, as the platform is so unpopular and difficult to navigate that even Meta’s own employees won’t use it.  Some have attributed these early bumps in the road to the simple fact that technology needs to spend a few years catching up to the ambitions of metaverse builders before immersive online worlds can truly flourish. Lubin’s Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that while he believes the metaverse will one day dominate commerce and culture, he doesn’t believe “any of the existing corporate attempts to intentionally create the metaverse are going anywhere.” Lubin similarly thinks that current understandings of the metaverse, and attempts at building it, may not end up working out the first time around. But that doesn’t mean he’s any less bullish on the promise of platforms that facilitate an immersive online existence.  “Call it the metaverse, we will spend a lot of our time online,” Lubin said. “And our money and our work and our activities will be realized in either augmented reality or virtual reality, or at least with tools that enable us to live rich and hopefully compelling experiences online.” Stay on top of crypto news, get daily updates in your inbox.

More recently, a photo of Ye wearing a “Satoshi Nakamoto” hat made the rounds on social media. The move to purchase Parler comes in the wake of West’s Twitter and Instagram accounts being suspended for what the platforms called “antisemitic comments” earlier this month—something he won’t have to worry about with his own platform.  According to Parler, the agreement is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2022. It will include ongoing technical support from Parler’s parent company, Parlement Technologies. Launched in September 2018, Parler has long touted itself as a free-speech Twitter alternative. Following the January 6 capital riot, Parler was removed from the Google Play and Apple App stores. Parler was also removed from Amazon Web Services (AWS) for what the tech giant called its lack of policing of questionable and violent content. Parler resumed service on February 15, 2021, with added content filters. The app returned to the Apple App Store on May 17, 2021, and Google Play on September 2, 2022. That same month, Parler announced the raise of $16 million in Series B funding. Parler had 1.3 million visitors to its website in August, according to analytics website SimilarWeb. In contrast, there were 9 million monthly visitors on Trump’s Truth Social, 6.8 billion on Twitter, and 18.2 billion to Facebook. In March, Parler launched its NFT marketplace DeepRedSky. The first launch featured a line of digital art, “CryptoTRUMP Club,” featuring Trump’s image. Later collections include the Babylon Bee, Brandon Tatum, and the POTUS TRUMP NFT collection headed by former first lady Melania Trump, Melania Trump made waves of her own after launching a separate series of NFT collections on the Solana blockchain. The Solana foundation quickly distanced itself from the project. “I wanted to inform you, to avoid any confusion, that her choice to use the Solana blockchain was completely organic, and this project is not part of any Solana-led initiative,” a representative told Decrypt. Non-fungible tokens, better known as NFTs, are cryptographically unique tokens linked to digital and physical content or memberships that provide proof of ownership. Parlement Technologies is optimistic about the prospect of West’s ownership. “This deal will change the world, and change the way the world thinks about free speech,” Parlement Technologies CEO George Farmer said in a blog post. “Ye is making a groundbreaking move into the free speech media space and will never have to fear being removed from social media again. “Once again, Ye proves that he is one step ahead of the legacy media narrative,” Farmer continued. “Parlement will be honored to help him achieve his goals.” Representatives for West and Parler have not yet responded to requests for comment from Decrypt. More U.S. Companies Charging Employees For Job Training If They Quit – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/more-u-s-companies-charging-employees-for-job-training-if-they-quit-reuters/ WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) – When a Washington state beauty salon charged Simran Bal $1,900 for training after she quit, she was shocked. Not only was Bal a licensed esthetician with no need for instruction, she argued that the trainings were specific to the shop and low quality. Bal’s story mirrors that of dozens of people and advocates in healthcare, trucking, retail and other industries who complained recently to U.S. regulators that some companies charge employees who quit large sums of money for training. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Nearly 10% of American workers surveyed in 2020 were covered by a training repayment agreement, said the Cornell Survey Research Institute. The practice, which critics call Training Repayment Agreement Provisions, or TRAPs, is drawing scrutiny from U.S. regulators and lawmakers. On Capitol Hill, Senator Sherrod Brown is studying legislative options with an eye toward introducing a bill next year to rein in the practice, a Senate Democratic aide said. At the state level, attorneys general like Minnesota’s Keith Ellison are assessing how prevalent the practice is and could update guidance. Ellison told Reuters he would be inclined to oppose reimbursement demands for job-specific instruction while it “could be different” if an employer wanted reimbursement for training for a certification like a commercial driving license that is widely recognized as valuable. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has begun reviewing the practice, while the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission have received complaints about it. The use of training agreements is growing even though unemployment is low, which presumably gives workers more power, said Jonathan Harris who teaches at the Loyola Law School Los Angeles. “Employers are looking for ways to keep their workers from quitting without raising wages or improving working conditions,” said Harris. The CFPB, which announced in June it was looking into the agreements, has begun to focus on how they may prevent even skilled employees with years of schooling, like nurses, from finding new, better jobs, according to a CFPB official who was not authorized to speak on the record. “We have heard from workers and worker organizations that the products may be restricting worker mobility,” the official said. TRAPs have been around in a small way since the late 1980s primarily in high-wage positions where workers received valuable training. But in recent years the agreements have become more widespread, said Loyola’s Harris. Licensed esthetician Simran Bal, who was taken to court by her former employer to repay $1900 in trainings they required her to attend, poses for a portrait outside the King County District Court in Shoreline, Washington, U.S., October 13, 2022. Bal, whose case was dismissed, says she was already licensed for services the trainings covered. REUTERS/Lindsey Wasson One critic of the CFPB effort was the National Federation of Independent Business, or NFIB, which said the issue was outside the agency’s authority because it was unrelated to consumer financial products and services. “(Some state governments) have authority to regulate employer-driven debt. CFPB should defer to those governments, which are closer to the people of the states than the CFPB,” it added. NURSING AND TRUCKING Bal said she was happy when she was hired by the Oh Sweet salon near Seattle in August 2021. But she soon found that before she could provide services for clients, and earn more, she was required to attend trainings on such things as sugaring to remove unwanted hair and lash and brow maintenance. But, she said, the salon owner was slow to schedule the trainings, which would sometimes be postponed or cancelled. They were also not informative; Bal described them as “introductory level.” While waiting to complete the training, Bal worked at the front desk, which paid less. When she quit in October 2021, Bal received a bill for $1,900 for the instruction she did receive. “She was charging me for training for services that I was already licensed in,” said Bal. Karina Villalta, who runs Oh Sweet LLC, filed a lawsuit in small claims court to recover the money. Court records provided by Bal show the case was dismissed in September by a judge who ruled that Bal did not complete the promised training and owed nothing. Villalta declined requests for comment. In comments to the CFPB, National Nurses United said they did a survey that found that the agreements are “increasingly ubiquitous in the health care sector,” with new nurses often affected. The survey found that 589 of the 1,698 nurses surveyed were required to take training programs and 326 of them were required to pay employers if they left before a certain time. Many nurses said they were not told about the training repayment requirement before beginning work, and that classroom instruction often repeated what they learned in school. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said in comments that training repayment demands were “particularly egregious” in commercial trucking. They said firms like CRST and C.R. England train people for a commercial drivers license but charge more than $6,000 if they leave the company before a certain time. Neither company responded to a request for comment. The American Trucking Associations argues that the license is portable from one employer to another and required by the government. It urged the CFPB to not characterize it as employer-driven debt. Steve Viscelli, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania who spent six months training and then driving truck, said the issue deserved scrutiny. “Anytime we have training contracts for low-skilled workers, we should be asking why,” he said. “If you have a good job, you don’t need a training contract. People are going to want to stay.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Diane Bartz; Editing by Chris Sanders and Lisa Shumaker Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. 10 Of The Most Underrated Vacation Destinations In Africa – The Points Guy https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/10-of-the-most-underrated-vacation-destinations-in-africa-the-points-guy/ Africa has a wealth of underrated destinations spread across its 54 countries, and the continent offers so much more beyond your typical Nile River cruise in Egypt or a safari in South Africa. If you’re in the market for adventure, there’s plenty to do and see, no matter if you want to soak up the sun on the beach, trek through the desert or embark on a safari. Here are some of the most underrated destinations on the continent for your next African vacation. Sign up for our daily newsletter Elephant herd along Shire River in Malawi’s Liwonde National Park. CHRISTOPHE CERISIER/GETTY IMAGES Lake Malawi, Malawi Lake Malawai in Malawi. ROMINA FACCHI/GETTY IMAGES Although Malawi is landlocked, you can still sunbathe on the golden sands of Lake Malawi. The landmark waterhole borders Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique, and it’s home to a unique collection of endemic flora and fauna (especially birds) that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Visitors can snorkel in the clear lake waters to see diverse fish species, lock eyes on the Big Five (lions, leopards, black rhinos, elephants and African buffalo) at nearby spots like Majete Wildlife Reserve or hop on a boat safari along the Shire River through Liwonde National Park. Okavango Delta, Botswana Okavango Delta marshes. KELLY CHENG TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY/GETTY IMAGES Hoping to see endangered species like the black rhinoceros, African lion, white rhinoceros and cheetah? Head to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The UNESCO World Heritage site is an expansive ecosystem of lagoons that visitors can explore on foot, by boat or mokoro (a traditional canoe), in a vehicle or even via balloon or helicopter. Travelers can also enjoy safaris in the Moremi Game Reserve, which sits on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. Just note that this game reserve (along with most others in Botswana) isn’t fenced in and wildlife roams free, so you can’t go wandering around your safari lodge alone at night. SALVADOR-AZNAR/GETTY IMAGES Travelers in search of African winter sun should head to the sands of Saly — just more than an hour’s drive from the bustling music and market scene of Dakar. This area is ideal for those who want to relax, play golf, dine and just enjoy a low-key holiday at an affordable hotel or home rental. If you’re itching for more action, take a daytrip to the nearby Lake Retba, which emits a pinkish hue thanks to special salina algae in its waters. Or, head to the Somone Lagoon, a mangrove and beach area known for its water bird species and blissed-out reggae beach haunts. GUENTERGUNI/GETTY IMAGES Tanzania’s most popular spots, like the famed Serengeti or the exotic sands of Zanzibar, are what usually call international travelers to the country. However, those looking to connect with nature should visit Nyerere National Park, one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in East Africa, which features close to 12,000 square miles of protected space. Besides the 440 bird species in the park, visitors can usually spot elephants, rhinos, lions, buffaloes, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes and hippos during a three-day safari. You’ll feel as if you’re in the Caribbean, lounging on white sands and swimming in sparkling turquoise waters. There’s plenty to see, too, especially underwater — including one of the largest populations of dugongs (a cousin of the manatee) left in the Indian Ocean. Bazaruto Archipelago National Park consists of five islands (three inhabited) amid crystal-clear waters, home to species like sharks, whales, dolphins, manta rays, turtles and hundreds of coral and fish species. It’s a true paradise for divers, and snorkelers can access many of these marine delights at low tide. Namib Desert, Namibia An oryx in the Namib Desert in Namibia. The rolling stretches of sand are best viewed from above via a hot air balloon. Two of the most iconic sites to see are Sossusvlei and Deadvlei — salt and clay pans flanked by sandy, reddish dunes which form part of Namib-Naukluft National Park. If you want to climb the dunes, Big Mama Dune, Big Daddy Dune and Dune 45 are some of the tallest. Note: The slippery, hot sand is tough to manage. Visiting early in the morning means the sand is less scalding and will be easier to climb. ONLY FABRIZIO/GETTY IMAGES With more than 100 islands in the magical paradise of Seychelles, it can be tough to decide exactly which to visit. The three main islands, Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, are each special in their own right. However, Felicite Island, just a few miles east of La Digue, is truly a wonder. Large boulders peek out of dense tropical foliage fringed by white sands and azure waters. The catch? This paradise comes with a price — the only accommodation option is the Six Senses Zil Pasyon, where the opulent, seafront villas can cost more than $2,000 per night. Budget travelers, don’t worry: There are plenty of affordable ($100-$200) spots on the nearby island of La Digue, from which you can boat over to Felicite and spend the day. Related: Miles away: A trip to the Seychelles, Africa’s tropical paradise Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda Gorillas in the wild in Rwanda. VICKI JAURON/GETTY IMAGES There are only a few places in the world to see mountain gorillas in the wild, and the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda are home to one of the largest populations left. Because the gorilla population is nearly extinct, it’s not easy to see these gentle giants — only 80 permits are issued per day in Volcanoes National Park, and permits cost almost $1,500 per person. (Budget travelers take note: Permits cost just more than $680 per person in the neighboring country of Uganda). Volcanoes National Park offers other outdoor activities besides gorilla trekking. Hike a volcano such as the towering Karisimbi, trek to Bisoke’s crater lake or visit the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera. RICK COLLINS/GETTY IMAGES Safaris in Zambia are often overlooked in favor of visits to neighboring countries such as Tanzania or Botswana. However, Zambia safaris are just as magical (and often more affordable) than those in other African destinations. Our top pick is Lower Zambezi National Park, which sits on the fringes of Mana Pools National Park. This particular park is best experienced by canoe or boat, paddling along the Zambezi River, where large elephant herds (more than 100!) hang out along the river’s edge. Once you’re in Zambia, you should also add a stop at the famous Victoria Falls, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world. Related: 9 incredible luxury family safari lodges for the ultimate African adventure Santo Antao, Cape Verde Santo Antao, Cape Verde. ULRICH HOLLMANN/GETTY IMAGES Although Sal and Boa Vista are the most popular Cape Verde islands, those looking for an adventurous hiking vacation should consider Santo Antao — a lush island of undulating fertile peaks and valleys. With charming villages perched on cliffs and vertigo-inducing trails, hikers should head to the northeast of the island for the best treks. The island has no airport, which means you’ll have to arrive by ferry from the island of Sao Vicente. Because the island is so remote (it’s the most westerly of the Cape Verde archipelago), it’s relatively untouched by mass tourism, so it’s the ideal spot for interacting with locals and getting off the beaten path. Bottom line A hippo yawns in the Okavango Delta. BUENA VISTA IMAGES/GETTY IMAGES Africa is a gigantic continent with much to do and see in more than 50 different countries. With destinations to suit every taste and budget, it can be overwhelming to decide where to go. If you’re in the market for an adventure and hoping to experience something a bit different, lesser-known or more out of the way than the most typical or iconic spots, head to one of these locations for a dose of more remote, underrated travel fun. 1.3 Million Americans With Diabetes Rationed Insulin In The Past Year, Study Finds – CNN https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/1-3-million-americans-with-diabetes-rationed-insulin-in-the-past-year-study-finds-cnn/ CNN  —  In December, Stephanie Arceneaux of Utah will have been living with type 1 diabetes for 30 years. She was diagnosed at age 6. “I have seen a lot of changes within how diabetes is cared for,” she said. “I always thought that as I got older, that things would improve, and unfortunately, that has not been the case.” Arceneaux’s husband and young son also both have type 1 diabetes. All three of them depend on insulin to survive. “When I first heard stories about individuals with diabetes rationing their insulin, my initial thought was that is so horrible, because I know what it feels like not to have enough insulin in your body. At the same time, I also had this thought, ‘I’m so lucky that I’ve never had to do that,’ ” she said. “But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I had spent my entire adult life doing that. I’ve been lucky in that it didn’t cause any serious ramifications that I’m aware of, but I made choices in my life so that I would have the insulin that I needed to live.” Arceneaux isn’t alone: According to research published Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, over a million people with diabetes in the US rationed their insulin in the past year. “The main takeaway is that 1.3 million people rationed insulin the United States, one of the richest countries in the world,” Dr. Adam Gaffney, the lead author of the study and a pulmonologist and critical care doctor at Harvard Medical School and Cambridge Health Alliance, told CNN. “This is a lifesaving drug. Rationing insulin can have life-threatening consequences.” Gaffney and his co-authors analyzed the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2021 National Health Interview Survey, which included 982 people with diabetes who use insulin. They looked at how commonly these people rationed insulin because of how much it cost. People were considered to be rationing if they responded positively to questions in the survey about skipping insulin doses, taking less than needed or putting off buying their insulin. “What we found was that nationwide, about 1.3 million Americans with diabetes rationed insulin annually, and that’s about 16.5% of all those people who use insulin,” Gaffney said. Some groups said they did so more frequently, such as those with type 1 diabetes; those without health insurance rationed most frequently of all. Adults under the age of 65 rationed more frequently than those who were 65 and older, with Gaffney noting that almost all of those who were older and rationed less were covered by Medicare. Two other groups who were more likely to ration insulin than their counterparts were middle-income people and Black Americans. “We found high rates of rationing of a life-saving drug, and that should really be something of concern for everyone,” Gaffney said. “We need urgently policy change to ensure that everyone has access to this critical medication without cost barriers,” he said. “And we need to do that today.” Gaffney and his co-authors said in the study that there are several factors underlying their findings, including that insulin prices in the US are far higher than in other places, and that pharmaceutical companies have increased the price “year upon year, even for products that remain unchanged.” “By limiting insulin copays to $35 per month under Medicare, the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act may improve insulin access for seniors, who experienced substantial rationing in our study,” they wrote. “However, a similar cap for the privately insured was removed from the bill, and copay caps do not aid the uninsured. Further reform could improve access to insulin for all Americans.” According to the CDC, more than 37 million adults in the US have diabetes, but 1 in 5 don’t know it. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the country and the No. 1 cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations and adult blindness. The number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled in the past year, the CDC said. Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by an autoimmune reaction that stops the body from making insulin. According to the CDC, 5% to 10% of people with diabetes have this kind. Type 2 diabetes means the body doesn’t use insulin well and can’t keep blood sugar at normal levels. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults. Although there’s no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes, type 2 can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes, including losing weight and being active. The choices Arceneaux found herself making in order to ration included not eating – as insulin is needed to cover carbohydrates that a person eats – and rationing things like test strips needed to test her blood sugar, meaning she was unaware of how much insulin she needed to give herself. She also rationed other care that she needed, she said, and spent a lot of time deciding which medical care was more important for her. She would go to her doctor to get insulin prescriptions, but she wouldn’t do other things that someone with diabetes is supposed to do, such as getting annual eye exams to check for complications like retinopathy. The cost of insulin plays into her decisions “to a huge extent,” she said. “If you don’t the have money to buy it, you don’t have the money to buy it,” she said. “So what I found myself doing was doing everything I possibly could, limiting everything I possibly could, so that I could purchase my insulin so that I would have it available.” When she first moved out on her own, she said, she quickly ran into trouble: She could afford food or insulin but not both. A friend bought groceries to help her through. “I remember telling her, ‘It’s difficult now. I’m young. I’ve just moved out on my own, but I know that it’s going to be better, you know, in five or 10 years, things are going to get better,’ ” she said. “And here I am. That was when I was 20 years old. I’m now 43, almost 44 years old, and it’s worse now. The costs have skyrocketed.” She now has insurance through her husband’s employer, but “the cost of the premiums are so high that that leaves very little left over to afford everything that we need.” They often have to rely on donated insulin from other members of the local diabetes community, she said. The findings of the new study are “so important,” said Dr. Kasia Lipska, an associate professor of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine who sees patients at the Yale Diabetes Center. “The findings are really concerning in terms of access to insulin among Americans,” said Lipska, who was not involved in the research. “We have a serious problem. There are many people with diabetes who are rationing insulin, and there are disparities in terms of access, in terms of age, race, income and insurance status,” she said. “I think that this study points to persistent access issues to insulin in our country.” The findings did not surprise her, she said, but rather back up what she sees in clinical practice. Her own research into a single diabetes center found high rates of insulin rationing. “We see people in the hospital setting who get admitted to the hospital because of high blood sugars, and then when we sort of ask what happened, turned out that they lack insurance or insurance is inadequate and they couldn’t take their insulin,” Lipska said. “In the outpatient setting, there is not a clinic that goes by where we don’t talk about cost of insulin and figuring out how to get the patient the insulin they need without breaking their budget. These are like daily conversations we have in the Yale Diabetes Center.” Insulin is “like oxygen” for people with type 1 diabetes, she said, and those who go without can get very sick within hours or days and end up in the hospital with ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication. It can even be deadly. Those with type 2 diabetes who don’t have adequate insulin can have high blood sugar levels, putting them at risk for complications such as heart disease, blindness and kidney failure. “Diabetes is even more expensive now than it was in my 20s,” Arceneaux said. “I know that studies have been done that say that one in four individuals with diabetes ration their insulin, but my guess is that it’s much more than that. We just may not realize that we’re doing it. “We’re doing what we need to stay alive, and that means getting the insulin that we need,” she said. “So we’re rationing not just our insulin but potentially other things in our life to do that.” Arceneaux, who is the Utah chapter leader for the nonprofit T1 International, said she hears about rationing all the time. T1 International is led by people with type 1 diabetes who support local communities, giving them the tools they need to access insulin and diabetes supplies. “We deserve the same quality of life that everybody else deserves, and we shouldn’t have to sacrifice so much of our lives just to stay alive. That’s what so many of us that have diabetes are doing: We’re making sacrifices every day that others do not, that others don’t even realize,” Arceneaux said. “I think that’s unacceptable, and it needs to change. And it needs to change now. We’re tired of waiting,” she said. “People with diabetes are tired of waiting. We need a true price cap on insulin, and we need that to happen today so that we can have everything we need to live.”

(Photo by Randy Litzinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Icon Sportswire/Getty Images Alex Morgan has made her thoughts on the Brittney Griner situation very clear. The legendary United States women’s national team star, who’s been sensational for San Diego’s NSWL team, as well, went viral for her pregame outfit. It was Brittney Griner-themed. “A statement piece,” Morgan tweeted. Griner, one of the WNBA’s top players, has been sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison. She was arrested at the airport on drug charges.  Fans are loving Morgan’s support. “Sick tee. Anywhere we can buy or is this a personal piece?” one fan wrote. “I want to be Alex level of cool when I grow up. ,” one fan added. “Love,” one fan added. Griner, meanwhile, is celebrating her 32nd birthday on Tuesday. She will be celebrating it in a Russian prison. “Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia eight months ago today. Tomorrow is her 32nd birthday. By all signs, there’s been no significant progress as U.S. officials wait for what they feel is a genuine response to their offer to trade prisoners for Griner and Paul Whelan,” TJ Quinn reports. Hopefully Griner will be brought home soon.

Here’s A Piece Of Metaverse Hype That Is Crazy Like A Fox – Globe St. https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/heres-a-piece-of-metaverse-hype-that-is-crazy-like-a-fox-globe-st/ Someone was trying to get attention for a run of NFT—non-fungible tokens that are supposed to certify authenticity and ownership and which be used to facilitate real estate transactions. But more often they are part of some marketing scheme. In this case, a PR representative said that the company involved was moving from pilot project to production phase, which seems to undercut the concept of an NFT as being scarce and particularly valuable. Which shows why many are wary of hyped concepts, like the metaverse, which is supposed to be a titanic virtual universe in which people from anywhere can interact. Maybe. As Wired put it in April, “To hear tech CEOs like [Meta’s] Mark Zuckerberg or [Microsoft’s] Satya Nadella talk about it, the metaverse is the future of the internet. Or it’s a video game. Or maybe it’s a deeply uncomfortable, worse version of Zoom? It’s hard to say.”

Four Leaf Introduces Innovative Slim Can Cooler Which Is The Perfect Blend Of Durability, Functionality, And Aesthetics To Keep Beverages Cold – Digital Journal https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/four-leaf-introduces-innovative-slim-can-cooler-which-is-the-perfect-blend-of-durability-functionality-and-aesthetics-to-keep-beverages-cold-digital-journal/ The Four Leaf Can Cooler is an innovative addition to the world of home essentials products as it combines durability, functionality, and comfort in a single product In recent years, the demand for drinkware products has risen, especially among women. Due to the rising popularity of hard seltzers and sparkling water, more and more female customers are choosing those drinks over other carbonated beverages. As a result, there has been an increase in the consumption of those beverages. In addition to that, new brands are constantly appearing on the market which makes it difficult for shoppers to choose what brand is reliable and trustworthy. Women want to drink in style but they also want products that are durable and reliable. Among the many home essentials brands in the United States, Four Leaf is one company that is exceptional in its approach towards the manufacturing of drinkware as they make sure their products meet the needs and desires of their customers in every way. Today, the company is excited to announce the launch of its Slim Can Cooler For 12 Oz Slim Cans. Speaking about the new drinkware, a spokesperson for Four Leaf had this to say, “At Four Leaf, we believe that durability, functionality, and comfort should go hand in hand with beautiful design. The result is our instantly recognizable products in bold designs catering to any taste. We are confident our customers will love it, especially the ladies. Our products are designed to be aesthetic and functional. They are an instant conversation starter for any occasion.” The Four Leaf Slim Can Cooler is a standout among can coolers in terms of flexibility. Its holder provides a snug fit for most 12oz cans, making it great for beverages like beer, hard seltzer, or energy drinks. Koozies are loved for their portability and Four Leaf’s Slim Can is not an exception. With Grip-Lock technology, users can easily push their cans in one smooth motion, which also makes it easy to remove. The silicone gasket creates a tight seal that keeps beverages cold for hours. Another noteworthy feature of the Slim Can Cooler is its aesthetic and ergonomic design. Most koozies on the market have the normal vertical, straight design. Unlike them, this product focuses on having an ergonomic shape with a curve design for a much more comfortable experience while holding. This to avoid repetitive strain injuries caused by holding an unnatural position for too long, or by repeating the same motion repeatedly. Four Leaf Slim Can Coolers come in fun designs to express a lady’s unique personality. Whether she’s alone or hanging out with friends, she loves to enjoy moments with her favorite beverage and a product that allows her to keep her drinks chilled from the first sip to the last is a delight. Additionally, with their affinity for drinking in style, these can coolers help ladies to hide the boring drinks logo and instead let them show off their styles through various designs. The product is available in many vibrant designs, and additional options are expected to be added soon. “This slim can cooler surprisingly keeps my hard seltzers colder longer in the crazy heat,” explained Anna Brooks, a user in the United States. “Fits nicely, awesome color, easy to hold and use. I first bought one to begin with and ended up buying some more for my besties. They also love it!” The Four Leaf Slim Can Cooler is an essential piece for any occasion whether it is an outdoor or indoor event.
