Local-first software is an effort to make collaboration software less dependent on cloud services, and Automerge is an open-source library for realising local-first software. In this talk I explain our motivation for creating Automerge, and map out 7 years worth of research projects that are feeding into this project. I think one of the best (and rarest) feelings in the world is knowing you’re doing something that feels right. Forgetting is part of how we cope with the monotony of everyday life and how we look at problems in new ways. ​ …my feeling is that the hardware you physically interact with, the things you touch every day, are worth the extra cost. ​ We think it’s our job to align everyone’s flow state with their personal mission at the company.

How anything worth doing from here on out is necessarily going to be beyond my realm of safety. Discomfort is proof that you care, proof you can love something so much you want it to be better than it is. ​ The most successful people I know are the ones who don’t take discomfort as a deterrent. Instead, they approach it with a childlike curiosity, take it as a signal of interest. ​ I see it this way: hiding your creative work has infinite opportunity cost – it prevents you from getting any feedback (good or bad) that helps you improve; it silences the variety of luminous, expansive, electrified ideas that seek articulation. ​ The interim between feeling ready and doing it despite the discomfort is where the entire world begins.

One of my common pieces of advice is that when doing something or making something, you should separate your planning into two distinct goals: - How good do you need the thing to be? - How good would you like the thing to be?

…but like so much else, the disappearance of the real thing ensured that massive demand for idealized simulations of it would follow. If pure wilderness represents a baseline authenticity, everything humans have done since, from agriculture onward, has added layer upon layer of artifice to our environment.

You write about what happened, but you can never capture the actual event.​ The role of the word may be to commoditise knowledge, but everything feeds into everything else, and by writing things down, no matter how disconnected they are from their source, we can provide the seeds of new things that would not otherwise have existed.
