Truly take a moment to think about it: How do you want to occupy space online? What are your goals? It’s nice when people treat their social media accounts as extensions of themselves, rather than as ads for themselves. The internet should not be a space to spam innocent bystanders with Soundcloud links and promotional blurbs. Instead, it should be a space to really exist inside of, and a place where you can forge connections that organically grow into mutual interest in—and support for—each other. Online friends are just different than your IRL friends. So, do not drop your friends or completely abandon your “old life” when you get a few hundred or thousand followers online.

Even if offices vanished entirely, that would only make room for new urban functions that would probably be more vital, further consolidating the city’s relevance.

It is for this same reason, that I struggle to support funds who’s primary thesis is that of diversity. Too often it serves as a vehicle for high net-worth LP’s — typically fund managers elsewhere — to point to their contribution as their action towards equality, with little structural change to their own fund. And make no mistake, that is what we are witnessing now. This country was built on the backs of Black people — and it has no future without the progression of Black people.

The remarks below started as a first draft and incorporate feedback from half-a-dozen colleagues, mentors, and friends who push my thinking, every day.

There’s a saying, “You aren’t stuck in traffic, you are traffic.” Similarly, the unrest occurring right now isn’t something that is happening to anyone, but a phenomenon that everyone is a part of, even if they haven’t left home or directly participated at all.

This is going to take years to build, and I don’t want to rush it. Second, I’m a believer that if you make your plans public there’s a much greater chance someone will reach out to help you build it vs. someone who’s going to stop everything they’re doing to copy your idea.

Running is the simplest of sports: right foot, left foot, right foot. But the simplicity opens up complexity. I traveled to the Philippines to bury him. In his bedroom, I found a poem I'd written in the second grade about watching him run down the Queensboro Bridge. Perhaps his praise was an attempt to reverse the way his father had treated him. Still, what more can a child ask than that their parents have faith in them? Sometimes I think that everything in life would be easier if I just put my shoes away. But more often I think the opposite. With a stressful job, it's helpful to have just a little bit of time where you force yourself to go outside and breathe. And I've come to believe that discipline in one part of my life makes it easier to have discipline in another part of life.
