Seattle Solidarity Budget on Instagram: "Next month the Seattle City Council will decide if the Seattle Police Department can buy CCTV cameras and a “real-time crime center” (RTCC). RTCCs gather and track massive amounts of surveillance and police data including public and privately-owned surveillance feeds, scans of every license plate to pass in front of a police camera, other police databases, and communication systems into one centralized cloud-based center. RTCC companies claim this technology lets police “anticipate and prevent crimes before they occur.” We all know what that means – more harassment and biased policing of Black, Brown and people of color communities, of sex workers and unhoused folks. This is one of the reasons why Seattle’s Community Surveillance Working Group has recommended against letting SPD buy CCTV and RTCC. Rus’s story is fiction, but this will be our reality if we don’t demand that the Seattle City Council reject these harmful technologies. stopsurvei...
