For most traditional visual artists, the process of making art is a solitary affair. So, it is intriguing to see what happens when one artist suggests to another “let’s make art together.”

Toronto Stories Live: Daphne Odjig
Toronto Stories Live: Daphne Odjig
During World War II, Daphne Odjig was a young assembly line worker who on the weekends taught herself to draw by studying the paintings at the Art Gallery of Toronto and Eaton’s College Street gallery. Decades later, though entirely self-taught, Odjig received two of Canada’s highest civilian honours – the Governor General’s award in Visual Art and the Order of Canada. Artist and Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University associate professor emerita Bonnie Devine delves into the history and work of Daphne Odjig with a special appearance by Elder Dr. Duke Redbird delivering an original poem inspired by Daphne's work. This clip is from our Toronto Stories Live event. This evening of storytelling explored some of the overlooked, unseen, and forgotten stories from Toronto's past. Join featured artist Gary Pearson, whose work is presented in our current exhibition "A Year from Now", for an in-depth talk about his past and current bodies of work. Viewers will get the chance to peek behind-the-scenes as Pearson gives a brief tour of his Okanagan studio space as well as some current works in progress. Pearson works largely in painting and drawing, with a strong graphic sensibility and a stark, spare, linear style. He explores urban spaces and the everyday through a purposefully crude and repetitive style, drawing subjects and themes primarily from things seen and experienced while travelling.

S2E222: "Pocket Desert with Richard E. Prince" As the northern extremity of Mexico's Sonoran Dessert, the pocket desert is a rare habitat in Canada. Here you will find rattlesnakes and scorpions, burrowing owls and sage thrashers, greasewood and mariposa lilies. The desert's dry air and cloudless skies has long been valued for celestial observation. Vancouver sculptor Richard E. Prince is renowned for his elaborate, and sometimes mechanized, artworks that examine natural phenomena. In this episode, Prince presents his “stargazers” work - precision machined viewing devices with which he sites the morning and evening stars of the desert sky.
