After the previous post, I was interested to see a short piece over at The New Yorker about basically the same idea—of spotting invasive species in the backgrounds of films and television shows, bu…
Generate passwords on the Linux command line | Opensource.com
Most websites and applications ask users to create accounts with secure passwords so that they can provide tailored user experiences. While this tips the odds in favor of website developers, it certainly doesn't make life easier for users. [OS_EMBEDDED_MENU_RIGHT:]Sometimes the rules for creating passwords are so strict that it's hard to get a good and allowable combination. Open source tools and tips for improving your Linux PC's performance | Opensource.com
This is the third in a series of articles that explain how to improve your Linux personal computer's performance. My first article described how to unleash performance by identifying and resolving bottlenecks. My second article showed how to improve performance by upgrading your PC's hardware.
Last week, I talked about set -e; while it does add a layer of security on many potential Bash errors, it is unfortunately not quite enough by itself. In the next few posts, I'll explore a few other things you can do to improve the safety of your Bash scripting.Note that I am not advocating writing complex Bash scripts. There is a point (around 10 lines, maybe?) where you really need to be asking yourself whether Bash is the right language, and whether you wouldn't be better served by a more modern programming language. Python, Ruby, Haskell (via stack), Clojure (via lein exec) etc. all have facilities to replace Bash scripts by providing both a nice API to run subprocesses and an easy way to turn source files into executables. It's likely your favourite programming language has similar facilities. Still, in some environments Bash remains the best option.

Remember our search algorithm trip to the beach? If not check out the next tweet in this thread. Our trip can be represented as a graph. What's a graph? It's a data structure used by algorithms to do smart things.
The play before time ran out. The last speech of the campaign. The typo on your resume or the spot on your tie. The final decision before the company declared bankruptcy. We focus on the thing that…
