How to prevent ISP sees what you downloaded and protect your connection - former ISP employer explained - BestLeap
Your Internet Service Provider knows a lot about you. I formerly worked for more than one ISP in the United States. One of my job titles at the nation’s third-largest cable company was Internet Security Liaison. Although some of the job functions were more exciting than others, such as assisting law enforcement in tracking down...

Navigating your transition to GraphQL
Navigating your transition to GraphQL
Last month, Sashko and I presented at the first ever GraphQL Summit, where we gave a talk about our philosophy for GraphQL-First development: a new workflow that we’ve put together after building from scratch with GraphQL ourselves and having hundreds of conversations with developers who are doing the same. Among other benefits, we’ve found this workflow forces the frontend and […]

Making WiFi fast [LWN.net]
Making WiFi fast [LWN.net]
Dave Täht has been working to save the Internet for the last six years (at least). Recently, his focus has been on improving the performance of networking over WiFi — performance that has been disappointing for as long as anybody can remember. The good news, as related in his 2016 Linux Plumbers Conference talk, is that WiFi can be fixed, and the fixes aren't even all that hard to do. Users with the right hardware and a willingness to run experimental software can have fast WiFi now, and it should be available for the rest of us before too long.

In Vermont, solar, batteries key energy revolution
In Vermont, solar, batteries key energy revolution
MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS, Vt. (AP) — Rhonda "Honey" Phillips keeps her own cows and garden at her small, hillside homestead, and now is pushing self-sufficiency in a more high-tech direction. This year, she installed new solar panels just downhill from her modest house and hung a Tesla Powerwall backup battery on her basement wall, to charge up when it's sunny and draw down when it isn't. "My grandfather used to say, 'Whatever you can see is what you should be taking care of,'" said Phillips, 57, whose family has been in Vermont since the 1700s. With shorter winters and hotter temperatures in the summer, Phillips is convinced she's seeing climate change. In her renewable energy project, Phillips got help from the Vermont solar company SunCommon and Vermont's major electric company, Green Mountain Power.

VMware’s Kit Colbert: Is the Cost of Migrating to Containers Really Worth the Effort? - The New Stack
VMware’s Kit Colbert: Is the Cost of Migrating to Containers Really Worth the Effort? - The New Stack
VMware built the foundation of its business on making workload portability viable. But in the last few years, the concept of “workload” has been refined. The part of a virtual machine that behaves as though it were a machine, introduces too much overhead. Without it, a workload may be easier to maintain — assuming we…

How to Train AI to Do Everything in the Digital Universe
To assist a child we must provide him with an environment which will enable him to develop freely. –Maria Montessori There’s a kindergarten I walk past on the way to work, and I can’t help but peek inside everyday. The classroom — packed with toys and puzzles, music and books, flower planters and even an occasional …

New Economics – AVC
I am tired of the classic left/right perspective on society, policy, and politics. I realize that markets are an incredible tool to allocate resources efficiently. And I also realize that markets are subject to failure and we need to protect our society from these market failures. I am not a purist on either side of […]
